I mean, we can go down a list. You know, Colin Kaepernick sucked even though that's the person that they beloved. And there are so many other great quarterbacks that have played. And we talk about college football. I mean, there's a plethora of great quarterbacks that play in college football. The kid who just won the husband trophy. I think he's biracial. Caleb Williams, that kid is that kid is literally the only other person other than Patrick Mahomes that can gun that thing like that. But with the funny thing is in the spirit of saying we need black quarterbacks and black quarter we can do this. We kind of crap on the white quarterbacks that can actually run.

"Cam Newton released, was this a surprise to you, Greg. You know, we knew this was a quarterback competition the whole time. Everybody's assumption was cam's gonna start and Mack will get in there eventually. And that's not the case. Cam Newton cut, this is Mac Jones team. Yeah, I think the mildly surprising thing was Cam Newton was released. I thought that he had earned the number two spot on this team and would have been helpful this season with Mac Jones being a rookie, not exactly the most NFL ready body in the world. He's already dealing with something with his left knee. I thought that if the worst should happen, then Cam Newton was the better option over Brian Hoyer, who's also released I assume that's just a procedure remove and he'll be he's probably back in the building tonight. But I still think that Cam Newton was the best option, at least in the short term. I'm hoping that the Patriots go are looking for a better backup option. I'm sure Jerry Stidham is still on the radar he was put on he was put on he's on the public. So he could be back off the publicist after week 6. So I assume looking at all the tea leaves that it's going to be Mac Jones Hoyer and Stidham at some point in time, but mild surprise that cam was given his outright release as far as I've been able to tell and my reporting. This was not a mutual agreement that he would be released. It was more the Patriots saying we're going with Mac, we appreciate what you've done, but we're going in a different direction with the QB room. Yeah. And I guess you can make a case the distraction if Mac Jones were to struggle and you have someone of Cam Newton's caliber in the waiting in the wings that could be that could create a situation where people start wondering. Maybe maybe they should have kept cam. Nobody's going to be clamoring for Brian Hoyer to take the reins of max stumbles a little bit out of the gate. So I understand it from that perspective. Also, maybe out of deference to cam, which is to say, you want to be a starting quarterback. You think you're one of the best 32. Here's an opportunity to go out and see if you can. If I'm cam, I kind of assume he's not gonna take a backup role somewhere. He might wait to see if a starting job opens up somewhere and maybe bide his time. I wouldn't be stun if we don't see him start an NFL game ever again, but, you know, I guess that remains to be seen. "Football sets, there is a strategic difference to the team, whether or not a player is vaccinated. Cam Newton not practicing for the next three days is not because of some BS NFL rule. He knew the rule, the team knew the rule. Cam Newton not practicing for the next three days is because he is not vaccinated. Yeah, that's exactly what it is. And when you look at the COVID protocols, which we all looked at when they came out a few months ago and now I feel like we're looking at them again today just to refresh our memories on all these types of things. And you look at the COVID protocols and you see what vaccinated players are allowed to do and allowed to get away with versus what unvaccinated players are going to go through this year. And I've talked to several patriots players who have all said to me, off the record that the Patriots as an organization have not pressured any individual player to get vaccinated, but the issue is, is that there are so many hurdles to overcome as a vaccinated player that is difficult to be on the team as a vaccinated player. It's difficult to be on the team as an unvaccinated player this season. So not only do you have all this COVID protocol stuff and reentry processes and all these types of things that you could run into, negative tests and what that could lead you down if you get that happen to you as an unvaccinated player. There's also rules within the club facility, right? That everybody has to be mad that you can't be in certain meeting rooms and you can't be in certain cafeteria areas or weight room areas and all these different types of things. So what the NFL has done is, and this is the NFL. This is not the Patriots. The NFL has done is they have forced the hand of the players to basically say everybody's going to get vaccinated one way or another, whether you agree with it or not, but we're going to make your life pretty much miserable and very difficult to be on an NFL team as an unvaccinated player..

"But at some point in time whenever Mac Jones is ready, he is going to be able to operate the full facilities of the Patriots offense, which Cam Newton was never able to do last year, I don't care what was around him. Mac Jones is one of the most advanced. I didn't get a chance to ask Bill. This question in the press conference. I wanted to But Mac Jones is probably the most advanced college quarterback in terms of pre-snap checks reads, all this stuff. All the mental song that goes on at the line of scrimmage I have not seen or heard of a quarterback as advanced at Mac Jones in terms of what his level of experience is. And I think that it's just citing to me. It's probably exciting to Josh McDaniels. It's probably exciting to the Patriots that eventually at some point in time. Mac Jones is going to be able to do a lot of the stuff at the line Shack on. Brady could do. I'm not saying everything. I'm not saying that he is Tom Brady, but just to be able to say, all right, we see this defense, we're going to check out of this, this guy is Advanced Beyond almost all college quarterbacks you. You talk to people around the Alabama program, and they talk about how smart he is. They talk about how he's been teaching the Alabama offense, to Bill, O'Brien wage, Down there, so right? Just in terms of all that, that's a great basis and it's something that the Patriots lacked, whether it was Cam Newton or Jerry students. Did them coming from the Baylor offense home and the Auburn offense, Mac Jones can do everything that the Patriots need to have done at the line of scrimmage and that is a huge key component in this offense and they got a guy who can do that.

It's false and I wrote a column this weekend for Boston Sports Journal, that basically laid out and I'm talking to different people both around the team and also around the league about where Cam is and there's three things that need to go on Nick and it needs to go on now and it needs to go on every day off of the day until the season kicks off and number one. It's cam has to lose weight. He can't he can't play a 250 anymore. He's not a young buck. We saw dead. You know, I thought this but it was confirmed by a couple of NFL people that I I talked to and I trust they said that cams legs got heavier as the season went on and off and run as much he wasn't as a as Elusive and the big thing is not only that but your legs are everything when you throw the ball, if you don't have your legs which you did earlier in the season, they threw the ball a little bit better. If you don't have your legs then you have nothing as far as power and things like that and also just accuracy if you don't have your legs then you have to compensate upper body and things just get all out of whack and that's what happened. When cam last year. So in cam I will give him credit on the I am athlete podcast. He did say, I think he was trying to lose ten pounds. I'd go less. I think he needs to get to 3235. I think that gives them a better chance to be sustainable. He doesn't he doesn't need to be 2:50 to run over linebackers anymore. There aren't that many linebackers that are 2:50 a.m. Should be in a business and his age are going to be 32 a plow on those guys over. So there's that there is he has to get into he he has a he has to get with her own coach. I hope he's working with one but he better be working on one that works on his mechanics all the time every day. Get back to where he was at the beginning of last season get it out of her system because he needs to learn how to just be able to flick the ball. Ten yards instead of making a whole body convulsion just to get the ball out in the last thing is the biggest thing Nick and we've talked about it. I thought is he needs he needs Express 24-hour premium tutoring on the Patriots Playbook and what goes on as far as all right. If the defense does this then I can change to this and what's my audible what's my check because I know everybody's all excited about Johnny Smith and Hunter Henry and you know, we you can also factor in The athletic fullbacks that they've wanted to have for two years. Dan Vitality is coming back supposedly and also they dropped adult and Keen to play that position because there's a choice that they want to be more like the 49ers with use checked. And so it's all nice and dandy that they have two tight ends and athletic fullback and people are absolutely right to say that benefit of that is you get match up issues where all right, if it's safety then we're just going to run over them if their linebackers then we're just going to run past them. We're going to throw the ball. That is great and all but it doesn't mean Jack if you don't have a quarterback who can't see the defense see what's going on check to the right play and take advantage of the defense and last year cam wasn't even close to that. So unless all those things happen and he's not there at this point. He is not ready to be the starting quarterback for the for the Patriots. Do I think he can get there and be better? Yeah, but we'll have to see.

"Talk about the Patriots. The the Patriots grabbed everybody's attention by making move after move after move after move. Like we're watching it over agency going off. How many people are going to bring in its kind of unbelievable how many starters they've added? And so I count they added ten players that I think are very very significant to their team next year. In fact, I would say pretty clearly the Patriots are back and a lot of people saw this coming, you know, but they are going to be a force in the NFL next year here is my list my nerdy list of the ten players the top players. They added that are very significant to their roster next year. The first two are massive. It will reshape the entire Patriots offense. They added two tight ends Johnny Smith and Ed Hunter Henry. To Johnny Smith signed from Tennessee. He signed a four year deal worth up to fifty million dollars. That's Thirty one point two five million dollars guaranteed and he's only twenty-four years old. So that's Monday. That's a really gigantic Marquis franchise player. He cited the reason why it came to New England is cuz he loves Bill Belichick. He's got great respect for him. And I want to point out of all the everybody I'm about to talk about these shows to be in New England Bill Belichick got his kind of guys who sought out New England wanted to be there and wanted to work hard and win a Superbowl. I think it matters. It's very very exciting. These are not with Josh Gordon's or what's the other example Phillip Dorsett who they made a move for and they're not really like that. You think they fit they don't work out know. These are guys who all chose to be in New England who wanted to win a Superbowl. I really want to win a Superbowl. These guys went out of their way to be New England now the other tight and they brought in With twenty-six-year-old tight end Hunter Henry from the LA Chargers got a three-year deal twenty-five million dollars guaranteed. It's worth up to thirty seven point five million dollars total if he meets all those incentives. They also added two wide receivers the Patriots brought in Nelson agholor to a you got a two year twenty six million dollar contract East twelve years old. Now a lot of people do not like this move and I I get it Nelson agholor is not the most flashy player in the NFL but I think if it's very well with Cam Newton, he's good at he's not going up and getting the ball. He's got good hands did some stuff of the Raiders that I think deserves your attention go watch what he did with the Raiders and I just I'm like, huh a lot of good plays. Okay. I understand. I see the potential Bill Belichick and the Patriots would see and Nelson agholor go will give the guy a good contract, especially considering the Patriots have like our desolate at wide receiver. They need help. They got home. Who is awesome but he can't do everything by himself from the slot. They have n'keal Harry who n'keal Harry. I I think he's going to pop. I think he's going to progress and keep getting better. But she's not a number one right now. So on top of the page where it's also added Kendrick Bourne guy from my local area actually went to Eastern Washington University 25 years old. He's coming from the San Francisco 49ers. He got a three year deal worth twenty two point five million dollars. Now another thing the Patriots did they also added they signed Center Ted carriages and they traded for tackle Trent Brown. So this is the new Patriots offense right now. They've receivers Nelson agholor, Julian Edelman Kendrick born and kill hair is its own nuclear Aguilera. I'm doing my best. It's a hard game to say. They also have Sony Michelle running backs for any receivers Sony Michelle at running back and improved offensive line. Cam Newton at quarterback who I get why people doubt Cam? He's a former NFL MVP and with when you put cams Talent with a lot of weapons including two outstanding tight ends Hunter Henry Smith, right man. I'll tell you what I look at the Patriots offense and think two things immediately number one. Everything is going to run through their brand new Titans. Their entire offense now is probably going to drive down the seams of the field right up the middle. They're going to use our tents heavily lot of play-action again. I am scheme wise things will look a lot like the page words did back in the day when they had drunk and Aaron Hernandez together to start tight ends. Now number two. I feel very very confident with Cam Newton as the Patriots quarterback and it surprised me but I want to remind you that two years ago. Tom Brady was the page word starting quarterback and did basically nothing and the reason was there were no weapons there. He kept running into the same brick wall. His receivers weren't good enough. So, how can I think you and I would both agree. I like Cam Newton Tom Brady's a better quarterback than Cam Newton. So my point is if Tom Brady couldn't make it work with New England's roster. How was Cam Newton supposed to succeed? He was set up to fail will now Cam Newton's being given weapons is being set up to do. Well, I'm excited man. He's a former NFL MVP, he's hungry. I I personally believe Cam Newton's going to have an awesome year and it really is going to make extended one-year deal with like it was like three and a half million dollars with a bunch of incentives. I honestly think we're gonna look back at his contract at the end of next year and go. Can you believe the deal they got on Camden he played so well for no money. I really think he's he's a guy who can didn't play well enough wage. Last year to earn a new gigantic contract. So he's going to have to show what he can do this year and maybe earn more money next year but I think cam is poised to do very very well and make a lot of money and win a lot of games in New England

Free Agency 2021: Biggest Winners and Losers From Day One
"Who's the biggest winner from day. One the biggest winner from day one already told you it was. It was a my intro. You're listening great question. Jonnu smith out. It's cam newton. Well that depends kenyans a starter for sixteen games. That's right that's true. It's yeah okay. Potentially find jonah smith. Donald smith big contract with the patriots They invest heavily in him. You like this for him i do. I think you know Obviously the quarterback is the concern. But this is the scenario especially with the move that they made that we look for in fantasy as tight end could be the leader of the pack in terms of targets and opportunities and so look cam was not good in twenty twenty. If cam does start sixteen games in two thousand twenty. One greg olsen. During a five year stretch was pretty awesome of the top tier tight ends of the guys that we did. We talk about what he was in the next group you know. And so from twenty two thousand twenty sixteen. Greg olsen averaged a hundred eighteen targets a season seventy seven catches Decide one thousand yards and five times. Johnny could do that. One season estimate put them right around a top five tight end. Greg olsen was great and not only was he great but we also saw from cam newton in that stretch that he could give you greg olsen. Who could finish as a top eight tight in five straight seasons and give you a number to wide receiver in four of those five seasons three or four of those five seasons whether it was. Steve smith or kelvin. Benjamin and even ted ginn one year. So that's interesting. It's soom jameis winston as the starter. I still go. i think it'd be messy. You know. I can't situation we're taking those not blaming So i was hoping james would go someplace else and tastes hill. Would still be the guy with maybe a rookie or somebody. Young that they could groom continued. Just gonna to get you know too much of the mill package of james as the starter and if as milton starter. Davis is gonna play very much so it just feels like it be messy situation oil. Who do you like better. Corey davis with the jets nelson agholor with the patriots. I think adler is going to be bad. I don't trust the situation. You know i mean he. He had so many big. Plays for the raiders last year and he was so good for derek carr but he did that on eighty two targets. I don't think he gets eighty two targets with the patriots. He's going to do the same thing. So with what cam does running the ball with what jonah smith brings to the table with. What the rest of the receiving corps will look like if julian edelman on the team if he's healthy Nagla is going to be A guy that's not on many fantasy rosters middle of the season whereas corey davis could be the best receiver for the jets. I don't know if that's going to be the case. But i would take davis by far over niagara.

Cam Newton Re-Signing With Boston's Patriots: Making Sense Of The Move
"I do wanna move to the quarterback news today tony because bill ballot check and cam. Newton have apparently decided to run it back next season with the patriots agreeing to terms with newton on a one year. Deal with up to fourteen million dollars. Newton did struggle down the stretch famously. Last season tony. So does this move makes sense to you. It's so charitable that you'd say he struggled down the stretch. He struggled from the moment he got in there. He had twelve rushing touchdowns which is wonderful but he had eight passing touchdowns and ten interceptions. I want to get the stats right. Here he was. I mean he couldn't throw downfield. He was twenty eighth in passing rating and he was deadliest in yards per game. And so you asked me. Does it make sense. And i'm going to tell you declarative in affirmatively. It does make sense because he's a professional quarterback right and he took responsible. He was terrible last year. He couldn't throw it but he took responsibility after every loss. He said this is my fault. He was a leader. The other players revered him as a leader. The coaching staff loved him as leader. Belichick him. Personally the worst that can happen problem is that he becomes a backup. And would you trust your team to the backup cam newton after all these years. Yes you would. It does feel like the contract. You give to maybe charitably again. A high end. Backup tony because look the deal as it is six billion dollars again or wrapped up in incentives and honors and playoff achievement. So a lot of this really does hinge on how we actually plays in real time but the other thing about this. That clear is that this is just mr right now for bill belichick. This is not mr right. They're going to go and look around. And there is a phrase that i think of another piece of wisdom from someone else that by the way describes nothing about my own personal life or philosophies but you are as faithful as your options. What some wise men believe bill. Belichick is faithful to cam newton right now because there aren't options otherwise at that price but is it going to look at the draft and say. Can we get another quarterback absolutely. Oh he'll look at the draft. And maybe mack jones will be there and maybe trade lance will be there and he'll maybe everybody talks about him requiring jimmy garoppolo very when he's not having broken bones but he has broken bones a lot you. It is at the moment to marriage of convenience. But i will say three things. One cam had no training camp last year none too. He actually had toronto virus himself and might have been in a depleted physical condition. And three m. it's it's just hard for me to believe that he would be this bad again. I you know. I got to be a little bit better but again again. My point would be if you were stuck with cam. Newton that's like being stuck with twenty five other backups. The news was today and Greg correct me if I'm wrong the news was today because over this weekend phone calls are being made deals are getting closer in the Patriots needed somebody in that room that they could sell to the perspective free agent. That's why the deal was today. That's what you know, this deal could have happened three months from now think about it. Think about what the timeline tells us. They needed somebody in that room before Monday and out of all the options that they had him whether you like them or not. He was the best option at this point. So that's why it's announced today because they want to get this it's getting the ducks in a row and it's it's about friendships obj for example, Greg how many times have we talked to Thursday? Bacca Beckham loves Camp. So it's not about you know, it's not about how I feel about cam or Greg feels about cam or how you feel about cam. If Odell Beckham loves himself a Cam Newton in Belichick wants to bring in obj then bringing cam in again makes it much easier to bring obj in that's what it's about Pac-Man Curtis Samuel same thing. Like it's about relationships those guys believe in Cam and so the Patriots know that and so they're trying to get ready for what's about to happen next. I don't know four or five days. "Always but even yeah, yeah and you know, and I said it last year look they are at a contract stalemate which is where they've been basically for a year as far an extension for Robinson. And if you're the Bears, they're going to have to tag him, you know to at least do something like if he doesn't, you know, you tap it gives you more time. Maybe you come to a contract extension if you don't that gives you the ability to trade him. I just think that there's very little chance that the Patriots get involved in this. Yes. They have cap space but look Allen Robinson has been using a contract extension for the better part of a year. Let's just say for the sake of argument that he's cut loose at some point in time, whether it's they don't tag them or they tag them and take the Tag Away at some point thousand restricted free agent. And you know, the Bears might do that to sort of punish him because all the cap space would be gone say this happened in like May or something or cascais is gone. He screwed, you know, maybe later Allen Robinson wants to make a deal. He wants to he wants life-changing money. If you think the Patriots are given that to a receiver. You know, good luck. It's I just do not see it happening. They have to address the quarterback issue first, you know, we'll see on that but there will be plenty of other suitors willing to overpay them Allen Robinson, then the Patriots if he even gets their Market which I would put at about 5% So again, this is kind of where I think and again anybody looking at this offseason as a Patriots fan is is sold by this bill of goods. It's it's a team that's aggressive by all accounts and you've said this as well. I'm John zanis filling in and the story du jour or do week or whatever you want to say here appears to be a Cam Newton wage. His name is resurfacing and the Patriots quarterback starch and Greg. I can't I can't think of Anything worse to happen right now if you're a Patriots fan right now and and all you want is New Hope. Okay. This is a new hope the possibilities are endless blank canvas money draft picks Capital. Theoretically the Patriots could do a lot of different things some of which could be very exciting and interesting and I can't think of one thing that would just throw a wet blanket all over over all over that any more than bringing back Cam Newton. Yeah John, it's it's weird. I I started hearing the chatter on all the Sports Talk radio station a week and I'm like what the hell is going on? Like it's basically like Cam Newton's become it's similar to some of the debates that you hear in politics like where they just like Stoke fear in people to generate interest in their shows and things like that. It's like, ooh now Cam Newton's the boogeyman that like who they might be bringing Cam Newton back just to get people to react like people people need to settle down and this is why you suck. Had to be SJ this why you listen to this podcast because you know things like how last offseason when everybody was going nuts about Saddam was a guy in Cherry stem is going to be this and Jerry system is going to be that and he's going to be the next guy. You know, what did I tell you from January of last year over a year ago. I told you that he was not be the starter that there was going to be some sort of Veteran competition. So, you know, welcome to coming here where you where you get well informed you don't have to worry about the hysteria. You just get straight facts and and what's going on. So here's where we are. We Cam Newton and this is something that I've been talking about since the end of his Patriots season, which is it's always been a possibly that Cam Newton could come back here. It all depends on what happens with the market and who they end up with the quarterback and this and that but for anyone to suggest the Cam Newton month Is going to be re-signed being the definite number one. That's what we want starter here next year. That's not going to happen. It just it just isn't in and here's why. We've also sort of touched on this but just to sort of reinforce the point. I think what happened this past season is the Patriots realized and and look we've talked about it that there wasn't really a plan back to check understood that there weren't enough chairs for the quarterbacks and somebody was going to be left could have been Jameis Winston could have been Cam Newton could have been Andy Dalton could have been anybody. It happened to be Cam Newton and they said they'd make it work. It did not work and what I think John what happened was and actually I know this happened the Patriots realized after the Cam Newton experiment that not every quarterback can work in the system and that's not to say Cam Newton still not capable of playing good football. I think that he is do I think it could be better with a better Supporting Cast absolutely I do and do I think God Part of the problem last year. Yes, but at its basis in this scheme, you need a quarterback who sees the totality of what's going on in the field. You need someone who's going to win before the snap. You need somebody who's going to see something on the defense say that's this is about to be a bad play here. We're checking to this and Cam Newton outside of you know, he might he might have alerted a few plays here and there but not even close to what we've seen in and look I'm not going to compare him to Tom Brady. Nobody's going to be Tom Brady, but The Baseline Jimmy Garoppolo would have been a lot better. Jarrett Stidham probably would have been a lot better in terms of what he could even when Jarrett Stidham got in John. We saw things like Palm Coast him would change things that the line that's the Baseline in this offense. And that's where it starts. The number one tenant in this offense is don't run any bad place when the quarterback is incapable of doing that for whatever reason that's that's strike. Number one strike. Number two is understanding after the snap. What's going to happen? What is the defense going to do? What is that going to mean in in reaction time? Like if I see the if I see the free safety all of a sudden rotate from too deep to single single life safety. I should know like that who's going to be open, but great. Let me ask you real quick. Cuz everything you're saying makes perfect sense, but did you need a year of did the Patriots need a year of Cam Newton to know that he wasn't that guy? Is it did you think he was that guy walking through the door? Is there anybody really smart Personnel people out there who thought? Oh can't might be able to adapt to this Patriots dial offense. It didn't seem sensible fit. Anyway. This is a guy who's always had accuracy problems who who plays a totally different style of ball. I mean, I don't know why you would have brought him in the first place. If your idea was to offer a patriot style offense
