"Now that seventeen million in new average per year, money feels like the number. They've been pretty hesitant. Recently, the steelers to do anything longer than three years for older players, Ben, Pouncey Hayden, but I have a feeling. This could be four, maybe even five years so three or four new year's. He said he signs. He's already signed at nine point five, so if the new deal for footwear for four years at seventeen. AP, Wi that would mean that would be seventy seven point five million over the full five years. which would drop his cap figure this year a little? So something like a fifteen million dollar signing bonus another four point five in roster bonus a big roster bonus next March, like twelve million plus a five million base next year, then bases of thirteen fourteen fourteen, so he also said that his cap number if they did the deal as he described, would drop from thirteen point, two to eleven point two with hits from four. New Year's of twenty, million, sixteen, seventeen in seventeen. If. It looks like that I think it gets done. I think the issue is. That twenty million dollar hit. In terms of salary CAP FOR INTERIOR DEFENSIVE LINEMEN Year to? Feels like that. That's tough. That feels like that's tough with been being at forty million next year, and you've got to players accounting for sixty million dollars in cap space. That doesn't feel warm and fuzzy. No. Have, that's one of the things I'm trying to wrap my head around to especially, because how many guys are coming up a T. J. Watt? They're locking in. There's no way they're letting him. Walk away, so there's. That number is going to be astronaut to so and then Minkah Fitzpatrick, after that they they gotta figure out a way to kind of. Maneuver this capital around a little bit maybe. I'm just thinking crazy, crazy numbers, but. backloaded. I Dunno, it's gotta be. It's gotTa be configured in a way to get these young guys in. And like Daniels erotic says. Why can't the steelers just give cam one million deal a million dollar deal in just give him sixteen million secretly the help the CAP. because. That's not legal. You can't do that. I mean I I. I don't think you can do that. Maybe you sell him and sixty million dollars share you give. Billion Dollars share of the steelers, which presumably will be much more than sixty million dollars for the foreseeable future whatever they sell the team, if they if they ever sell the team, but I'm not sure they could pull that deal off. No I I think I think the low number might set off some alarm somewhere. Yes he signing for one. Hey, what? I think the I think the radar would go off. But, when does this deal happen? I think we both think that the deal is going to happen. You know. When does this happened? The steelers have. And in Dave Scofield, the editor of behind a steel curtain dot com remember like the program. Remember to subscribe. I need my six thousand subscribers by the end of Joan. When does this deal happen? The steelers typically don't do deals. We're thinking like that weekend of the first game I thought it was maybe the Friday I think bad was saying that it usually extends into like the first game like right before the first game be at Sunday or Monday night that they don't do any contracts after that win. Does this happen if they do this? I think there's a chance that this might just be an anomaly year just based on everything that's going on. Whenever a salary cap is released for twenty twenty one. If you were to sign a guy for that big number now and you find out the caps actually dropping teams are just going to be completely handcuffed in those contracts are GonNa hurt a lot of a lot of teams I. Think I think from here on out. Those extensions are GonNa just have to wait. Until that numbers released I think it'd be foolish for a team to be signing some long term for a huge number just because they could just completely completely handcuff them for a the number years in the future. Like Jeffrey Benedict says of behind still curtain DOT com. They can't meaning I. Guess the NFL can't let the cap drop much at all the entire. NFL would be screwed and so many star players would be able to get good contracts. There's no way that will happen and I did a show I. Believe it was last week about I think it was on. Yeah, said. It's talking about players kneeling in in in, but I. think part of show was also. They're going to have fans in the stands. The hit. They're going to sacrifice fans health for money. I mean that's just the way it's going to happen. They're going to have fans in stands for all sixteen games. The revenue that teams generate from stadium from stadium revenue is ridiculous, just thinking of the cowboys off the top of my head, sixty five percent of their revenue. Comes from stadium from the stadium. They're not giving that up. You know they're not giving that if they made they made about. This is two thousand eighteen numbers. They made about nine hundred and fifty million in revenue about six, hundred, fifty million. That was stadium revenues. They're not giving that up. You may have to sign a waiver to get to your seats, but they're gonNA. Let you get to your seat so I don't think it's going to be a case of the CAP dropping I. Think fans will be instead week one. And it'll be whatever it will be, but the NFL's not gonNA lose all that money so I. Don't think they'll be. It'll be an issue. in terms of. The salary cap, but I think you're right..

"And that players expected on the next shift to. Yes with three teeth missing, but let's jump back into the main topic. So when we talk about a contract extension one. Do you think he's going to get a contract extension in going back to your article? In terms of a player comparison, if the steelers are GonNa look for a player comparison for his contract. What's the closest player that they could look at in terms of trying to craft his contract? Now I know you had Fletcher Cox you had J.. J. Watt Akeem Hicks Leonard Woo Williams. What's a player that they can use? As a benchmark to create the contract if you think he indeed is going to get a long term contract before the season starts now I think it's GonNa be kind of based off sort of three players. The first Aaron Donald His average value, twenty two point five million dollars here second. Fletcher Cox at Seventeen point three million dollars a year on average. Thirdly steph onto it. It being that team mate just signed this deal, but two years ago, thirteen million dollars a year I think he can hayward's GonNa be more inclined to take more team friendly ish deal especially just with this ties to the city. And how long already been there? His family's is is young. Families grown up there I think he'll take a little bit less, but in terms. that it's closer to Fletcher Cox deal less in comparison to where it Kinda trajectories going. Because, of course we're labeling off myself labeling him. The Second Best Interior Defensive Linemen League would probably rival Aaron Donald but I don't think he's someone who's going to be signing for twenty million dollars a year I think roughly that kinda seventeen and a half million dollar range is probably fair to kind of assume, but it's going to be in that neighborhood If I had a guess he doesn't have those defensive player of the Year award, so I don't think it's going to be pushing twenty, but. He He's do arrays and to. It would be paid more if his deal ran out this year to. Agree with you think he will do a contract extension now if he does consent. Is He steeler moving forward, would they? Do you presume that they would get something done for him next year? Cause I think if he does not sign a contract extension. I don't think he's a steeler moving for I. Don't I don't think. They get something done next year with the with I think if they do not have if they do not have players in the stands, the impact of the salary cap I think it's just tough next year with the uncertainty of whether they're going to have fans of the impact of the cap so I don't think if he if he doesn't sign an extension I don't think he's a steeler. If he does not sign one, will he still be in the black and gold? The salary cap moving in next year. It's going to be such a dicey thing. It's hard to even fathom what the number is going to be like. It should still go up, but it's GonNa be interesting, but if he doesn't sign it this year, and honestly I'm kind of of the belief. That I don't really think anyone's getting another deal sign until teams kind of know what these numbers will be moving forward so I. Think there is still the potential for it to happen, however I'm. It just depends on what happens the CAP. There's no there's no way can drop if it stays stagnant I. Think I think there's a chance he he does sign, but you're going to see a lot of losses in two thousand twenty. In behind the still curtains on Bryant Anthony Date Davis Aka who's. He entered our mark on. With the checkbook, he'll find the cash for the steelers to retain Cam I wish he teach my wife how to manage money. that. I'm until your wife. Listen to this show. Ran, shape you, can't you. CAN'T MRS bed listen to this show? In because bad is being a bad boy. You can't rip the wife on a show. Bad come on, man. You can't do that bad, so mrs bad I'm GonNa. Make sure you turn. I'm GonNa make sure you tune into the program and listen to the shell so bad can be in the bad house of no kidding. The dock so bad. Call the touchdown zone, so I'M NOT GONNA call a Doghouse I'm gonNA. Call it the bad house. I have a feeling. You spent a few nights in the bad house recently. Mr Two am New York. There's a name here on his list in terms of interior. Defensive Line contracts. That jumps out to me that you did not mention okay buckner. Just sign with the colts, his averages are twenty one down twenty, one million per year, which is astronomical for I think for deforest Buckner, but what about name? Grady Jarrett of the Falcons his averages. are at seventeen million I mean. Do you think the Cam Hayward is better than Greg Jarrett see I would say he is like when it comes to the forest buckner. That number almost surprised me I feel like I. Feel like that had to get done in order for that trade to go through. He wasn't accepting anything less but. Greedy Gerald when it comes to that deal I. think that's going. Be Another. One of those cops just because where Cam Hayward is in respective to his pierce, but I still think he's someone who would willing to take a bit less just based on his ties to Pittsburgh. When I'm looking at when I'm looking at these names, I I think he's better than Gino Atkins at this point. Gino's averages, sixteen point three Jj Watt at sixteen point six, which is heritage seventeen. Fletcher Cox's at Seventeen Point one. Then you get the big jump to divorce, buckner and then Aaron. Donald's at twenty two point five. So I think you're right that the number is in that seventeen million range. Let me read to you with Brinda program. In Wet Stone of still city insider dot com when I reached out to him in terms of what he thought the deal with look like and let me read is he said I've been thinking for some time?.

"Some teams because of Pittsburgh offense couldn't put up any points when they got points off. They could just sit on the ball handed off. Run the clock out. You can't really do that when both these guys are on like. When you look back to two thousand eighteen, both these like i. don't even think. Steph on taking that step yet, but they were pretty dominant so Sony Times they're forcing three and outs and chemists. Defense averaged ten points a game possibly just because of. Of how good that front seven is and then you look at the secondary, and it's the it's the best as Vincent's. Troy's lurking the that deep half of the field, so I think this defense is going to be terrifying in two thousand and twenty. If those guys are healthy, they're going to have the game plan. Quick passes, which I think will only help increase those turnover numbers. To your point if they have a healthy both of them. I can envision that this defense will be the equivalent of eight championship defense. It'll be every bit as good because they'll equally be better at the edge linebackers with Wadden to pre than they were with a Woodley and James Harrison. And I think in their defensive line will be absolutely better, and they'll be better as a secondary as well because I think. The collective of their secondary is better than. The collective secondary. You know eight I know people are GonNa kill me for that I. Did a show about that a while back? How I thought that this current? Was the best secondary in Tomlin error with the addition of if it's Patrick, I can't imagine how good this defense will be fully intact with a healthy defensive line. I think it'd be absolutely it'll. It'll be I think it'll be I. WANNA be into hyperbole as I've turning into an old man at fifty I don't want to jump into hyperbole jumping to nostalgia, but. Dare I say if to it and hayward is if to in Hayward play, it'll be curtained esque. Yeah No, I agree, and to your point with that secondary I think two thousand eight lake that one weakness of the defense was at the other corner spot like teams pick on McFadden or towns in her Willa Gay. Whoever was there? That's where they're going with the ball. Because the rest of the defense was pretty locked, you look at the other side of the field. Now Steven Nelson's. He's going to be flirting with being one of those top ten quarters and football, and I honestly believe that because you never hear this guy's name teams look at him. Him I think he's like is even five foot, ten teams or thrown their biggest receivers out there, and they're still trying to throw the ball and he's shutting. Guys like decay metcalf down. He played bigger than he is I. Think this secondary can be outstanding, especially with the amount of pressure that front seven can put up steel curtain. Ask is absolutely they're going to have to throw the ball fast, and these guys are going to be on them tight. This coverage is gonNA. Be Outstanding so I. Think I think there's a good reason to be excited. Now. Let me ask you. It sounds like you're gonNA agree with me. And I don't WanNa get too far off the topic. We'll get back to it, but you talked about the secondary. We talked a little bit about it and. Steven Nelson is better in jail. Eight am I wrong. Has Johann ages I I would say Stephen Nelson's probably their corner. One I think. I think he just plays a smoother game. Joe. When it comes to like those ball skills He's always in the neighborhood, but it seems to be more pass defense interceptions when it comes to Steven. Nelson side the balls just not not even getting there. He's just he's just shutting the wide receivers down. That receivers are almost playing DB. Now Azra Nehemiah said to. It is better than Kiesel. Cam is better than Aaron. TJ Is better than Woodley and the current steeler. cornerbacks are better than I am McFadden I don't disagree. What's your thoughts? You know what not to be an IT Taylor hater, but there there has been some times where as the guy who had blanket the number one. He'd follow them all over the field. He could get burned. There were games that happened and When it comes to all those players, I think it's kind of fair in the sense of that that front three in back in two thousand, eight, Hampton Smith and Kiesel they were just meant to take up space. They did it outstanding their chemistry together they they clogged up that middle, and they let the linebackers just go to work. I think to it in Hayward or guys that are gonNA make plays more so than Smith and Kiesel ever would Lamar Woodley. He kind of eight himself out of the NFL Yeah Hey. But I think that. Would have to be Tijuana James Harrison his G.. What's GonNa? Be Flirting with defensive player of the year again. If you plays a healthy sixteen games in two thousand twenty, it. Would he be better than that? The two thousand eight James Harrison I doubt it, but I think. He? He's GonNa push to break that sixteen sack record that Harrison set that year, so it could be interesting what the biggest challenge might be though the other talent is defense is going to limit people stats, and yes, it's going to hurt someone from absolutely exploding, so I think they have potential to be better than that team was, but I think the stats are just GonNa. Be Spread around so much more that it's going to be hard to kind of compare the two at the end of this season. The one thing I can remember about that defense is that. I had the total faith. It belief that that defense would make a play. Whenever it needed if it needed for instance and I'll give you an example. It was the Shea towns in play late in that game against Dallas, where he got the intersection where I just look, they're gonNA. Make a play. They're going. They're gonNA, make a play, you know they are absolutely gonNa make a play, and I remember that play so much because it was pretty emotional, because my cousin passed away from a football injury that week, and he was a running back for central Catholic Amici Wilson he passed away that weekend, so that was an emotional game. Our family was together watching that game. Game and we were just. We GonNA. Make a play. We GonNA. Make apply everybody just saying just looking at each other. They're gonNA make a play. They are going to make a play. He made an interception. We were like Yes, absolutely, we just knew it. I had complete faith in that defense I'm not there yet with this defense because they haven't done on the big stage. But I'm close to I'm close to it, but before we jump back to the main topic is great talking defensive football before we get back to the main topic of the program of Will Cam Hayward sign a contract extension before the end of the season for the start of the season out, say let me give a big shout out to Jonas. Brother, two, five, zero, zero, five now, Jonas. I WANNA. Give a shout, but we gotTA kick you. You're. A grown man cannot have a grown man's name in his handle. That's a technical foul. Desa technical foul now in the US desa technical foul. Is that a technical foul in Canada? In Canada I think that's just five minute five minute major in the box same thing. I! Get five minutes high, sticking high sticking two minutes, but if you draw blood, it's four so. What do you? What do you need to do to five minutes in hockey? Five minutes would be fighting. Fighting with the street known fighting with the stick that you're getting thrown out game for that. That's a little bit more. boarding if it if it their backs to play, put their head into the boards. That's getting five few other things. Unsportsmanlike stuff like that. It's Kinda rare, but it comes up feels like when I was watching hockey. You could do that and get like two minutes knowing minute if You. Re concussions it. You can give a guy concussion the every period and you still wouldn't get kicked out..

"So basically this question is he wants me to peg who the bills or going to drive look i don't think it'll be tara taylor i think we cross him off the list and i'm hesitant to go with nathan peterman although i think his chances are greater than taira taylor's of all those names that were discussed the one that intrigues me and i credit my colleague louis ridic with this is alex smith because kansas city is gonna look the deal him we know that sean mcdermott worked for andy reid we know that they've had dealings before already reggie raghman was traded from buffalo to kansas city we know that buffalo would like to fill that position we know it's a roster that's good enough to win right now particularly with double once the to picking twenty one and twenty two or twenty two in 2003 so of all those quarterbacks i think that i would bet on alex smith i don't feel good about that that but i think that's an option four the bills and certainly more likely than some of the other options i think right now i would rank him alex smith one nathan peterman to the field 3 now like that finally this one from brad brzezinski at red underscore brzezinski adam everyone knows that you have a history in denver spent quite a few years that's correct bread brad wants to know what's your favorite broncos story from your time covering the team as a great question brett and i will say this i have so many great stories for my time with the team i you know one that jumps out right away is that i always had conversations with the broncos owner pat bowlen and he promised me that if the team ever won the super bowl.

"The the different running back so derek henry had a huge game in the titans win over the chiefs in the wild card round and he was one of the toughest running back to bring down all season averaged a third most yards after contact per rush during the regular season who was second legarrette blunt not surprising who was first in that category patriots running back and dion louisville five eight one hundred ninety five pounds 7 inches shorter fifty pounds lighter than henry but equally as hard to bring down during the regular season sunday our first gave evan is jacksonville at pittsburgh how much of a chance this history tell us that jacksonville has to win in pittsburgh one of my favorite notes of the weekend that since ben roethlisberger was drafted by the steelers in two thousand four they have a losingrecord at home against two teams including the playoffs the patriots and the jaguar pretty unbelievable jacksonville's foreign one in pittsburgh in that time period that includes wins earlier this season were ben roethlisberger threw five interceptions and in the franchises only playoff meetings between the two teams i was back in two thousand seven and our final divisional playoff matchup will be sunday four forty eastern new orleans at minnesota it is not the first time that these two teams have met this season what stands out about what's different now evan sometimes it rematch as can be a little deceiving these teams met in week won the vikings 129 nineteen on monday night football but sunday's game be exactly 125 days since that game but a lot has changed sam bradford started instead of case came a quarterback in that game adrian peterson tied for the saints leading rushing and alan cooke rush for gamehigh 127 yards he was of course loss of the season because of an injury and this will also be the first playoff meeting between these teams since two thousand nine nfc championship which happened to be brett farce final postseason game this is the game i'm most looking forward at this weekend great defense great often i think everyone is and hopefully this game will be as good is that two thousand and nine nfc championship game evan thanks for taking some time thanks repairing some perspective we.

"It's a big thank you to steelers old pro defensive liming cam hayward and now onto our espn nfl stats maven evan capital with a little perspective on this weekend's divisional playoff matchups in evan thanks for joining us one of the first i want to ask you about was the experience inexperience factor with the quarterbacks in each of the match up this weekend nice surround megan ataman and it's really all four match ups experience version experience you'll get tom brady and rothlisberger drew brees matt ryan if combined for 75 playoff starts in their careers look on the other side mark is maury oda lake bortles case kinam nichols if combined for all three playoff starts between those four quarterbacks and the l one stabbed it really puts in perspective that that our great friend vince massey put out tom brady has more super bowl wins than marcus mario oda lake bortles case unom and nick folds have playoff starts that tells you what you need to know going to this weekend doesn't mean gene anything in terms of the results but they really a big disparity in terms of experience russian experience with these quarterbacks a so let's start the first given the weekend and what stands out to you about the falcons coming into philadelphia as the number six seed so the falcons could be the first six to beat a oneseat since two thousand ten when we saw it happened twice the packers beat the falcons went onto win the super bowl the jets beat the patriots and in lost to the steelers and the following but this one comes with a little bit of an asterisk because philadelphia is the first one seed as an underdog in their first playoff game mazen now all that has to do with carson went to nick falsehood mean eagles had a big homefield event thiesen and seven in one at home they've got the best home record in the league over the last two seasons so so certainly won't be an easy task for the falcons going in the saturday night we get titans patriots what stands out to you about what tennessee has to deal with knowing lasted when that game tom brady him marcus mario to will rightfully so good allow the attention but one of the mattress i'm looking for here's between.

"You know it's hard to quantify and just words you know i think sometimes um the level of intensity the less error for mistakes um you know everybody seems to be pretty chris for around this time um because we understand uh the stakes are are raised um you know i think the level focus on turkey during practice the speed are all things that a quake to you know play a football um and then for our guys have been rested you know you wanna get some of that rust off so you know you're gonna push it a little bit more you're gonna push the pace um you know benz pushing the pace in practice or and you know we're run into the ball a little bit harder uh you know to all around effort to get ready for this week what do you remember back jackson jacksonville in the first time you met him earlier this season when they keep dinesh field yeah you know i think babar opportunistic defense um you know that you know gives their offense a lotta breathing room um and then their offense uh you know they're not gonna trick you you know are running football team that's going to continue to run it um i thought we did a decent job not great um but you know we gave up think like three or four plays that really sputtered out of control um but that's the type of team jackson malloy is going methodical and they're gonna keep you know front on the ball and then there's just expecting you to make one or two mistakes momentum going to break away a can't thirty and nine on october eight not many teams that company pittsburgh and we thirty two at night how does that happen it was it was the perfect storm for them um you know obviously we turn the ball over on offense uh from short field but um defense we didn't get off the field enough uh you know i think we gave o two touchdowns night game and uh you know it doesn't matter how we get on the field the defense we gotta get off the field and we need to do that uh book.
