That's your money now. I'm Jim chesko, northwest news radio. Teen say nice things about other teens isn't a regular occurrence in today's social media. But as northwest news radio's Brian Calvert tells us, there is one app that is trying to change that. And to fully understand it, you have to understand the lingo. 11th grade student, Mitch, Kate goldenthal, first defines what it means to gas someone in this context. It means gassing your friend up, which is basically just a term which is giving a person a compliment or making them feel good or boosting them up. That's helpful to know when talking about the newest teenage water cooler. Gas is a new, very popular social media app that uses a network of high school students from around where you're living. This app is basically a version of a poll. It's based on giving compliments to people and getting compliments from people who are in your high school. The gas app works on several levels, but it's true strength is fulfilling one of the basic needs of most teenagers. We just have such a need for validation because of our training with social media. The student says the atta boys keep him coming back. It's starting to just not be satisfied anymore by Instagram and SnapChat and stuff. And so just this opera is just you scrolling and just getting validation, even if it's just so fake and ungenuine, it's just something that is so alluring. But there's another side to gas, some argue a darker side. And that's being said because the app caters to fulfilling a teenager's need for validation, saying it actually praise on these kids. You see downloading the app and even participating is free, but the moment you want to find out exactly who gave you the compliment and what team would not want to know this, it is now pay for play. And it's not cheap. It's paying 8, 99 a week. It tells CBC radio. He fell for it. Yeah, yeah, I think a lot of people feel very, very lured into it. As word gets out about the price, many teens tire of gas and move on. But even our 11th grader is savvy enough to know that if this app figured out how to tap into the insecurities and needs of those requiring daily validation, this battle is far from over. And the more we see these social media apps pop up, the more they're going to perfect how to get high schoolers hooked. Brian Calvert, northwest news radio. The state of Washington will try to settle past injustices when it issues its next round of licenses for new cannabis stores. Northwest news radio's Brian Calvert explains. The process for obtaining a license here in Washington isn't easy and holding on to it can be even tougher. To date nearly four dozen licenses have been forfeited, surrendered two or confiscated by the liquor and cannabis control board for a variety of reasons, and by law they must be offered again under a very different lens. The social equity applicant must qualify based upon where they, one of the criteria is where do they live, right? So it's like, you know, there's a disproportionate impact area map. A DIA map. And that determines, did you reside in a location that was negatively impacted by the war on drugs? Luanda Knox is CEO of make green grow, the technical assistance firm is partnering with the to help potential licensees navigate the social equity requirements for the licenses now up for grabs. What information the applicant needed to know in advance what they will need to do when the window opens and then what it will look like once the application window closes and how they will select the applicant. There are four courses this week and you can sign up through the liquor and cannabis board website We've done a very detailed course on for the film because there's so many steps. We broke it down into 6 categories. But there's so many nuances and things to cover, they really need to take the they really need to take the course. Which is free and accessible. Knock stresses you can't just put new pot shops anywhere. Qualifying for a social equity cannabis store license means just that. You qualify, but placement of an actual brick and mortar store is up to each city and county like it is for any other license, meaning you're not going to have too many stores focused in areas that city leaders believe will cause harm. Knox says this program actually causes more good, allowing business owners like a young man in Oakland to grow his own business success and even employ members of his family and community. And so it can be done. It has been done, he's not the only one. There's other stories like this. But it does require a lot of perseverance, perseverance, just not giving up. Washington apple growers are expecting a pretty good year domestically, but they're going to have their challenges when it comes to exports. The northwest horticultural council tells the Columbia basin Herald that the main problem is retaliatory tariffs on apples. "Despite the overwhelming support in 2016 and 2020, evangelical leaders seem to be breaking from former president Donald Trump shifting to other potential 2024 candidates such as Ron DeSantis or Mike Pence. Hannah Knowles has been covering this for The Washington Post and spoke with northwest news radio's Jeff pojo. It seems that there are some cracks in former president Donald Trump's Christian armor there. Yeah, and we really saw that this past week, when his former vice president Mike Pence, he had held an event with a prominent pastor a long time evangelical ally of Trump Robert jeffress. And pence's weighing a 2024 run and he's on this tour of mega churches and really trying to speak to this Christian right community that he helped kind of bring on to bring on board with Trump when people were skeptical of him. And so I think we see a lot of people competing for that group now and they know this will have options in 2024 and they're interested to hear them out. It always seemed kind of odd to me that president Trump, who is by all outward appearances, not very religious at all, had this deep loyalty from the Christian right. Yeah, no, it was, it was really striking the disconnect too in 2016 between, you know, some evangelical leaders who were really divided over his candidacy and felt like some cases he was immoral or, you know, they didn't trust him on social issues. And the divide between that and evangelical voters, specifically right leaning and especially white evangelicals because they really came out very strongly for Trump and liked what he was talking about. So I think you saw a little bit of kind of the leadership being led a bit by the voters, but there were a few prominent pastors and names that came out for Trump. You mentioned Mike Pence, obviously that was a pretty smart political move on Donald Trump in 2016 to pick him as the running mate. Yeah, and you saw, for example, some anti abortion groups who had said, you know, during the primary pleas, pick anyone but Trump as the GOP nominee, they ended up coming around to the ticket and they said at the time, part of this is because we trust Pence on this issue and we know he has deep connections in this community. But over time, as I think evangelical leaders, Catholic leaders saw what Trump was able to accomplish for them in office by reshaping the Supreme Court, they really became pretty enamored of the administration, but now people are doubting if Trump can win again. You know, governor desantis is looking pretty good to a lot of GOP voters and if there's, you know, there could be more than a dozen people throwing their hat in the ring. So there's just more people to choose from now. The ten anoles of The Washington Post talking with Jeff poggio. They say the victim was found in the parking lot when they tried to save him. This comes after a very violent day in King County. Police are now linking one suspect who has been arrested to all three of the earlier shootings we reported on Thursday. The first two happened in Renton just about a mile apart from each other. One where a man was shot several times near a Kia dealership, the other near rainier avenue south where rent and police say a man was shot while inside his car. And in seatac a man shot several times before he was taken to the hospital with the help of witnesses and C tac police. They were able to track the suspect down near Tacoma now all three victims from the earlier shooting on Thursday are recovering in the hospital, auburn police tell us they are trying to again learn some details as to what led up to the deadly shooting here at this apartment complex, but they do say that they do not have reason to believe that this one is connected to those other three, but they will continue that investigation. While there are no known plans for a change, the Seattle city council will allow a local landmark to be transformed as northwest news radio's Brian Calvert reports, it could even become a high rise. On one condition, the building in question is something many drive by regularly on Denny way, a former mid 20th century bank building now home to a Walgreens, the huge parcel even has a couple of parking lots. It's surrounded by towers, which is why this week's action by the city council is thought to be preemptive, while there are no known plans to change the building, the council has voted that in the future, the designated landmark could be altered as long as the outer facade is saved. It's a technique you see a lot in other parts of the city. Specifically, a specifically about Roman history, there's a parallel that is made every so often about the decline of Rome, porous borders, destroyed currency, greedy politicians, some would say sexual perversion and kind of comparing that to America. Do you think those parallels are helpful or appropriate as we kind of try to look to see if a superpower has ever been on the course of what America is on right now? Yeah, I think there are some definite parallels and a lot of it has to do with the fact that we are a free society and particularly in the Roman Republic. I mean, that was a free society as well. And whenever you have a free society, you have the freedom of citizens to be what they will. And as a Christian, of course, I understand that at least part of that is to act out on their fallenness. But there's also positive that can be found in that. Now, the Roman Empire, I think, suffered from a number of things. First of all, it's paganism was very much running against it. The second was the fact that it was magnificently successful. And so they had a huge amount of wealth and a huge amount of luxury. And you put all those things together and you do have a recipe for disaster.

Dr. Khalil Habib on John Locke and the Concept of Natural Rights

"Habib, I want to ask about social contract theory and why Locke was different. I'm going to try to tie this to current events very quickly. People talk all the time. I have a right to this. I have a right to that. I have a right to housing. I've read the healthcare. I have a right to be happy every right to an iPhone. I write to TikTok. I write to all this. But Locke's view was different. Locke's view is that rights were given by a creator or from God, this idea of natural rights. Why is it important that we understand natural rights? Before we even begin to hear the complaints of somebody saying I have a right to all these different material things. Yeah, that's good. I mean, for Locke, he distinguishes liberty from license early on when he first introduces the notion of rights. The idea that a right is anything you want to do would be too permissive for Locke, even associates that would license. For him, liberty is working within what he calls the law of nature. And not law of nature is known through reason and it's given to us by God and by nature. And so it's really a right to self govern. And that when one on the one hand means a form of government, you want a government in which the citizens get to self govern or at least represented fairly, but it also means the self govern your appetites. So if you define a right as just the indulging of one's license, Locke would not consider that a form of liberty. For liberty for him means self rule and moral virtue is the command of reason over the appetites. If you can't self govern your with respect to your appetites, then it's highly unlikely that you can be self governing in a form of government. So before he moves us in the direction of forming a civil state that will protect the rights that we have, yes, the first explain what a free human being is. And a

"At hillsdale college. I thought it'd be fun to kind of get a series of experts from hillsdale college so you could get an idea of why am I always bragging on hillsdale college. Well, just the couple of awesome people we have doctor Khalil Habib, we did a whole series with him. I want to get back to that. I missed that. And so we're working on getting that back. He's really special. We had him on to talk about Nietzsche and many other things, and it's doctor Habib joins us right now. Doctor Habib, welcome back to the program. Charlie, it's good to see you a long time. Yes, it has been long, and we have to do it more often. So I understand you're teaching a course on montesquieu, Locke and many other things. So my montesquieu is, let's just say, not as sharp as it should be, at least I did remember he wrote a book called spirit of the laws when Kyle mentioned it. Why is it important for us to know montesquieu or understand montesquieu to properly understand the American founding and tell us who montesquieu is? So montesquiou was an aristocrat from France and he had published the spirit of the laws in around 1750. And many of our early founders had actually read it in French. And it was quickly translated into English, and he's one of the second or third most quoted authority among the early American founders when it came to debating what exactly is the purpose and role of government. Now, to be sure, Locke is central to that debate and where the founders take locks understanding of natural rights, very seriously and Locke's idea that consent of the governed is the only legitimate form of government, but where montesquieu comes in is log has a very early version of the separation of powers. So he separates the executive and the legislative branch. And it's a bit of a mystery where he puts the judicial branch. It's somewhat shared by the executive and the legislative. For law with respect to domestic issues, the legislative branch does have some control over the judiciary, whereas when it comes to international relations, the executive. Now, when montesquieu writes the spirit of the laws, he's very reluctant to go down that path. What he wants is a far stricter. That's a word. Separation. And so he identifies three powers that any government has, whether it's a tyranny or whether it's a republic, there's three powers. The question is, how would they organize and assemble? Who has control over them? The executive, the legislative and the judicial.

Masks or No Masks? Many Businesses Err on the Side of Caution

"But it's co most Brian Calvert found out There's at least one industry still requiring face coverings, no matter what. It seems like a no brainer to this woman. Our industry. It's still Highly recommended. She owns a salon hair, Manny's and Pettis. It's a very intimate close contact service, right? We have no way of social distancing and some appointments run longer than three hours. She's requiring masks for everyone. Other businesses are choosing to do the same and customers. If you go inside any large store around here, the majority of customers are still wearing masks. Even though we know many of them are vaccinated. Every single life is somebody somebody right and I include myself in there that my grandmother died of Covid meet Crystal Monday. She's still big on wearing a mask. Even though she's vaccinated. She knows others feel the same way for several reasons. They don't really know. Which places they can go to safely. They don't know the vaccination status of people. He's even created a website revealing what businesses in her Vancouver BC neighborhood still require masks, she tells CTV. The website went up this past weekend. By Wednesday, she had to pull the sites comment section because just as there is a vocal group still supportive of wearing a mask. There's a very vocal group that feels otherwise. And I had to pull that because people were going in and making false entries. And then, of course, putting harmful content or, you know, calling people sheep, telling them not to wear a mask. Our salon owner realizes some people are ready to ditch the face covering. She's just not comfortable taking any chances yet. I know that there will be a few people that are quite upset about it. It won't be forever. If you still feel strongly either pro or anti mask an important consideration. Perhaps everyone can agree on right now, as we make a transition is good, old fashioned capitalism. Customers can choose where they feel the most comfortable shopping and at this point there appears to be stores that cater to both sides of this ongoing conversation. Brian Calvert. "That's experienced thousands of infections and more than 150. Covert deaths is still waiting for the vaccine. The New York Times reports. Washington's among the states were postal workers don't get qualified. They're out on the job every day, a job that's become harder with an onslaught of online shopping, but you'll likely be surprised to hear that in most states, the majority of postal workers and carriers are still not eligible for the covert vaccine, even though the CDC is listed postal workers among those deemed essential. Mark Diamond Steen, the president of the American Postal Workers Union, noted that numerous states have not followed this recommendation. And I've chosen to place postal workers further down in order of those with early access to the vaccine and Washington maybe one of these states unless the postal worker is 50 and fits into a couple of risk categories. They're out of luck around here. Is Wednesday, when the state loosens the vaccine qualifier list to include many workers deemed essential grocery workers, transit workers, They're all clearly identified. Postal workers and others who deliver boxes to your front porch are not Ryan Calvert. Come ONI use more than

Washington expanding COVID-19 vaccine eligibility on March 17

"Following just before President Biden told the country last night. He wants all adults to be able to get the covert vaccine. By May 1st Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced frontline workers will be eligible sooner than expected couples. Brian Calvert has the update. Several people told us the president's decree is offering a lot of hope, because only one state is open of vaccinations to everyone so far from the last Scott. So both of us Vaccinated and I'm only 22 Governor Inslee announced yesterday. Frontline workers and now eligible for the vaccine March 17. It does give me hope for sure People can't get vaccinated fast enough as more doses are headed our way. Seattle's first mass vaccination side of Blumenfield will open its doors tomorrow. And even though the state confirm 949 new covert cases just yesterday. The governor wants to open the doors for business is even more, he says. Over 2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in Washington

"Carlos Brian Calvert has the latest now on the number of Washingtonians being vaccinated. 455 new cases of covert 19 were reported in the last day and there were 22 additional deaths. The numbers are getting lower, and it could be in part because the number of those being vaccinated just eclipsed two million to be exact. As of earlier this week. 2,065,000 plus doses of the vaccine have been putting people's arms or 80% of the vaccine supply held by the state of Washington. The majority of these are first doses, but even more promising, the governor's goal of 45,000 vaccinations in one day has actually been achieved. The numbers are growing because there are more places you can actually get the covert vaccine matter Of fact, Seattle's to city run sites in South and West Seattle are for everyone over the age of 65 starting this week, Even though we've been told sometime mid month there is still no official opening date yet for Seattle's first mass vaccination site at Blumenfield. Seattle's UW Medicine faces vaccine shortage, stops scheduling first dose appointments

"New Covert related deaths have been reported across Washington and now is call most Brian Calvert reports. Ah major vaccine provider is Forced to hit Pause. The city of Seattle is getting excited about its first major vaccination sided Blumenfield. Fire chief Harold Scoggins hopes it will build on the momentum of the thousands of vaccines they administered this past weekend taking those doses. Two people that's really important for us. That's not done without partnerships with University of Washington except that partner has now run dry. A shortage of doses has forced the University of Washington and the vaccine sites It works with to temporarily suspend appointments for first doses. This will not impact those with a previously scheduled second appointment. Shortage may be a sign of a larger distribution problem that state health officials already seemed to be addressing. For example, after Clark County complained it was discovered they were getting far fewer vaccines, and now their supply has tripled. What come county Also previously underserved is now getting more vaccine in coming days. Ryan
