"You get that close to pruno? I was going to float tomorrow. Yesterday. When he asked a question, he had to get his face in the cup. How has the cap final for you, Jan? I'm rebranding myself with a new sexy voice. I was a great final. Now, I think it was an interesting final. I think that in the first 30 minutes, Newcastle were on it, and they had a great, great chance in the 31st minute of time. Maximum and then two minutes later, unnecessary free kick. And then it was in. But what I find impressive with this man's united team is when we saw the celebration after the games you have champion league winners, you have World Cup winners and greatly enjoy this win at Wembley. And I think that's shows you that something is going on that Manchester's united at a moment. This could be a start for something more. That was a point we picked up. I wasn't saying they celebrations. You know, the likes of Iran, Casimir, Martinez, who won it all. Yet celebrating this is like almost their first trophy. Yeah, and didn't play it the best today as a team, and yet defended resolutely. And you know, a bit of an N host joke about Martinez with Stevie in one or two of those, but you look at his defending and his partnership with Iran. You look at the first half of the ball come in Fabian share his favorite to win it Martinez got his head and they did enough, they had a little clash of heads, but he put himself in the possession second half Callum Wilson goes for one at the near post with a high whose head's coming in to clear it away, Martinez. So these guys really want to defend and that sounds a bit strange where the defenders should. But some of these defenders these days, they just want to be the ball playing sent a half's. But they have two players in Martinez in particular. Probably less aggressive of the two, but Martinez wants to put his head in and defend is a good partnership with veran, the full backs are playing well and of course in front of them. They've got arguably the best holding midfielder that's playing the game at the moment. Shaki, you've got your angel of the north time, which is the first time we've been Newcastle. Disappointing. It was, especially given how well the Newcastle started to give my thought they were by far the better the two teams in the first half an hour.

"He's such a creative 9. A la carin Denzel, he can make him tick without scoring goals. He doesn't just contribute with his goals, even though he's a goal scorer. What about sokka? How do you see him matching up against the American defense? It's just a such a scary player. Yeah. He can hurt you in so many different ways one we want combining. He's young. He's naive in that way that he's not trying to things. Not scared of things. He's being so young. He's already got experience in major tournaments. The attention and everything that comes with being a team like arsenal, being a team like England. European champion European champion. At this point. And coming up two goals, he's certainly going to be confident. If it's probably Callum Wilson, there's obviously a huge Muslim to good player. Who had one assist. He had an assist in the minutes that he came out. One ball touched and this is. So pick your poison, look, the U.S. mints national team. We'll worry about Kane. And we'll try to occupy king that can't be solely focused on Kane because there's so many different players in the English national team that can hurt you. Either starting or coming off the bench, it's pick your poison. There are a team that's ridiculously fast in one V one situations. A team that can break on you and turn the game on its head at any given notice. And a team that has some of the best players in the world. And certainly right now, a tournament favorite. Yeah. One more bit of news about England Harry Maguire also training today. Remember, he came off great news in the game against Iran. It was obviously talking to look at you. What? Those sarcastic. No, that's great. Great news for who. For both. It'd be great news for you. It's going to want him available. And I'm sure the U.S. spends now seems going to want him available as well. He's a center back that's more technical than he is physical. And you could probably exploit in transition. All right, one quick note, of course, you heard from Cameron Carter Vickers there. He was born and raised in England. So maybe he gets some minutes against his native land. How

"Walking through the mix zone with a strapping, he's had a scan. I think the scan for now is fairly clear in their fairly hopeful that he'll be able to continue playing the rest of the tournament. This though really is a nightmare situation for England that if he were to get into I think we spoke about it when we did the video of the England squad announcement that they are so reliant on Kane that they can not risk anything happening to him and it wouldn't be surprised if they were to beat the U.S. where the cane maybe gets arrested in the group stages to save him for the rest of the games because in terms of the squad dynamic that you've got Callum Wilson who's barely played international football since 2019 and Marcus Rashford who really likes to play out wide. So they need to keep fit. He is key really to English chances of doing well at this World Cup. Yeah, I agree. I think if there's any doubt surely they'll play it safe with Kane against the U.S.. He's the absolute focal point at the team. They brought the likes of Colin Wilson, he got Marcus Rashford as rob said. These guys are there for a reason. And not let's make up the numbers. So if soundscape picks Cain and he is injured. And then it gets worse. That's not good squad management. Yeah. I agree. And England had the squad to do it. To me, it's all about how he utilizes his formations, right? Maybe a four four two will have to see about that very quickly, Tom and then rob jump in England, you know, let's say that Cain something happens fully. Would you, I guess the question is, would you, you know, even if let's say it's 50%, right? Let's say it's 50% for this game. I would sit in completely for the group stages hoping hoping that the talent is enough to take us out of that group. What do you think? Yeah, I think so. I think they'd have to. If there's any doubt, then you can't play him, because as we said, the squad depth has got to be such that they can cope with any one player missing a couple of games. Harry Kane is so important to this team. That they have to, they have to protect him. But you know what? If he comes through, if they say the scans are fine, then he has to start everything. Right. Listen, rob Dawson, I want to ask you about the center and now the once again, because Portugal are playing. Soon as well. We had Fernando Santos doing his press conference, focused fully on the squad burner Fernández as well, just I'm also reading obviously that from your reporting and what Manchester United are putting out there that all that payment that was obviously due to another as well. And that's not going to be the case. That's a massive thing for Manchester United to certainly say, so a, there's that. How did that work out? And B, where do you see him now in January? Yeah, I mean, I think united really have got what they wanted with this. First and foremost, they wanted it resolved after the interview came out. They wanted this resolve very, very quickly, which they have done. I know it's taken a matter of days and they didn't want to get into a sort of a drawn out legal battle, which would have taken months and possibly years. But secondly, the Cristiano Ronaldo is going to leave and leave behind the best part of sort of 60 million pounds worth of wages, which is a massive win for united. I think that they made it very, very clear that this threat to sue him for breach of contract was not just a bluff, and it was genuine that if he decided to fight this, that united would prepare to take this legal action and I think once Ronaldo and his representatives realized what a strong case the United had for that, that they decided that it was best for everyone just to agree a mutual termination and both go their separate ways. In terms of where he goes, ultimately that is going to be down to Cristiano. He's got two choices in my eyes. He either he wants to get paid, he wants his money from the last few years of his contract and he goes to someone like Saudi Arabia or he tries to get his 500,000 pound a week at a PSG or a Chelsea or somewhere, or he says, you know what? I'm going to do it for the love of football. I want to go somewhere and try and win as much as I can. And he goes to someone like other Napoli and takes a paper or he goes back to sporting Lisbon, obviously they can't afford 500,000 pounds a week, but they kind of thought something. And he goes back and it's a nice romantic end to his career. So ultimately now the thing about Cristiano is this decision is now it's nothing to do with the united is nothing to do with another club demanding or keeping him out of the hands of other clubs. It's up to him and you will find out exactly what he wants out of these final years of his contract by the choice that he makes with his next club, either he wants to cash in as much as he can make as much money until he's 40 and go, or he wants to keep winning things. He wants to score Champions League goals. He wants to go somewhere in it and end on a really high note and we'll see that when he makes his decision. Possibly very, very soon, I imagine. Yeah, 100%. It's definitely up to him, but if history tells us anything, Ronaldo's biggest priority is Ronaldo. So we'll have to see what happens there. Hey, Tom, is there a world where Portugal win this whole thing, a World Cup? And then Ronaldo just says, I'm done. I'm retiring. No, I don't think so. I don't think he's quite yet ready to go off and play chess with Messi. I think I just think that, you know, this whole thing over the last 6 months and rob was followed this lock closer than I have, but it seems to be a hymn sort of trying to halt the tide, you know, prevent the dying of the light as he perhaps comes to terms with his own sort of footballing mortality. You know how his body's changing is not as quick as he once was, et cetera.

"That might have been his second choice press conference narrative. Okay, Tottenham one Newcastle United two Tottenham get tuned by or pift by Eddie house boys who emerged from this match, the superior low block fast break team Callum Wilson opened the scoring after half an hour. He and spurs keep a Hugo loris had an awkward coming together outside the box like two people trying unsuccessful to avoid each other in a narrow hallway. Laurice was left stranded. Wilson lobbed it home ten minutes later, Miguel almiron double Newcastle's lead dancing through the Tottenham defense at speed. His 5th goal in 5 games, Harry Kane, pulled one back from the corner in the second half, but Newcastle held on for a win that moved them up to fourth place only two points behind Tottenham in third, next thing you know, Newcastle gonna be coming for spurs NFL games to roger. God, it's suddenly a narrative of Dartmouth for them, a slew of injuries, including Hubert and Romero now in addition to richarlison and Kool-Aid rattled in the changes. I think they're playing in a 43 day spell playing 13 games. And got a credit them from the off. I thought they were, they were sprightly both sides had chances, Pope, denying Sonny and Kane, spurs traded defend, play on the break, but to succeed with that for Conte football, the defending has to be perfect. And this spurs, they were so sabotaging first, disaster for Laurie Shaw, clipped a speculative ball in behind the French goalkeeper came out, tried to control with his thighs, Devo. And he and Callum Wilson Clyde it. I don't know what you were here, but to me, it was as if Laurie expected that the protect the goalkeeper mentality would immediately draw out. Yeah, it just doesn't extend that far outside the area, roger. I think that you sort of have to be within the penalty area to get protected. He'd come so far and I think it was, I think it was fair enough. I don't think he was going to get protected on that. Absolutely. The way he felt defied physics Wilson God love you playing to the whistle, collected the ball, collected his mind, and with a goalkeeper floundering like a French salted cod executed a poem of a chip over Eric dyer and laurice rightly punished. It would get worse for Tottenham and laurice, who attempted to clip the ball out the back, miggy Elmer on pounced, session on tried to bring him down, failed biggie charged on, blue plas longley, then summoned an incredible finish to flummox the goalkeeper, really a simply sensational moment of football from a player who is feeling it. He's been charged by Eddie Howe who's really resurrected him. Go forward at will. You know, this is miggy, who was buried and mocked by Jack bloody Grealish, just randomly. I don't know if you remember that just when city was celebrating their title, just suddenly compared a terrible performance to Miguel. This was his Michael Jordan. I took that personally moment. They were 5 in 5 games, 6 overall for Mickey. To me, he's what the MLS should be. Like the Belgian and Dutch league, really a staging ground for talent for South American and central American talent to be sold on. Yeah, and look, there has been an arc with him since he arrived at Newcastle. You know, I think he started incredibly brightly. Lots and lots and lots of potential. But then lots of question marks about him in terms of what his genuine contribution was to the side. You're right, Eddie Howe has found the player we always knew he was and he's just playing with such guile such amazing feats such speed such smarts. Just he's one of the players in the Premier League right now that you just can't take your eyes off of his superb. And all mighty downpour ensued as if even the gods were angry with Tottenham. But spurs found a way to get into it. Harry Kay, battling Trippier off a set piece. So what should a defensive tackle grapple with an offensive lineman and just end in with an Aaron Donald swim move to nod it in on the line at Ariel said Dave how Harry Kane in the pass rush is unstoppable. Yeah, I mean, this was when that goal went in, I thought, wow, that was a very world cuppy goal. That's just kind of goal we expect Harry Kane to score in Qatar at the World Cup. Come on, Harry. But yeah, it was, he's always find a way to get on the score sheet. He's quietly stealthily having a very, very good season. Yes, and the goal was a mood changer even the lightning stops spurs ratcheted up the pressure, but Newcastle suddenly have the best defensive record in the league, kept things congested at the back and for spurs, a gutting loss. They started this season, so buoyantly, but in this one, the goals were self inflicted. Well, they did take the initiative in the second half. They honestly created little. And that's what makes the fans take. And I did appreciate Jack Pitt Brooks, who covers Tottenham for the athletic, his analysis. He said, in the first set of games, I thought spurs performances would correct as an improve in the direction of their results, but the reality of the last few weeks lost three of the last 5 is that their results have corrected in the direction of their performances and Newcastle, they vote into the top four, making the case that we are now living in the era of the big 7 question mark. How high might Newcastle the S blood money and all? How high might their ceiling be? Well, I mean, it could be infinitely high. Right, because they've certainly got the money to compete, you know, less cynical view is they have a young manager who seems to be getting the best out of the players that he has. You know, they haven't spent a ridiculous amount in the transfer market. They haven't, they haven't really had to yet. And they are, but I think the purchases they have made have been superb. So yeah, it's interesting. I think Newcastle definitely could emerge into and turn the big 6 into the big 7. They've now drawn we're both Manchester clubs delivered that signature win away at Tottenham, top four rhythm. They are off to Saudi Arabia of all places. Who would have thought for a warm weather training camp? Why would they choose? Why would they choose Saudi Arabia? Well, funny enough Eddie Howe was asked that question and he said it gives me and it gives me no pleasure. I do need to remind you, I don't like to say this, but it does bear keeping being repeated. This is a nation which hacks journalists apart with bone saws, but Eddie Howe made it clear the decision to go there was made from quote a purely footballing backdrop. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, the football we backdrop is that Saudi Arabia owned your football team. I think that's a footballing backdrop. That seems reasonable. Yeah, they'll travel to Riyadh in December during the Premier League break. They'll play hilal. Why not? In a friendly, we've made a football decision said that we've looked at a World Cup break. What's the best thing for the team? We've made it

"We have a lot to get through, but we will start in the Premier League where both North London clubs were in action today. We'll start with Tottenham Hotspur who lost out to want a new castle controversial opening goal for the magpies, Callum Wilson, putting his side ahead, clashing with ugo loris in the process. Miguel almeron followed up with a second for his 6th goal of the season, and Harry Kane pulled one back in the second half, but it wasn't enough. It makes it four wins in 5 for Newcastle, back to back defeat for spurs. Newcastle moving into the top four of the Premier League leapfrogging Chelsea and united in the table. Let's now welcome in Stevie Nicole. What went wrong for spurs today, Stevie? Well, I guess if you're a sports fan, you're thinking about the two shanties, the missed early on. Young men's song had one on one with Pope. Harry Kan had a great strike with his left peg that pops in with his legs. And so from there on, really, it was about Newcastle. And the game, particularly in the first half, was really open, and spots don't want to play an open game, as far as play an open game than a given chance he's aware. And that's why they lost two goals, you know, Newcastle with better decision making and bad policies in the final third could have had more than the two goals they got. Second half was a little bit laborious from both sides. Can did score as you saw? But I think in the end, Newcastle deserved the victory after the early chance he disposed miss. So really for spa, they'll be thinking if they take the chances, then they can just play the type of game they want and keep it tight and just frustrate it but now I ended up being an open game and sponsoring an open game are just not a quote for it. Yeah, I thought in the castle, I thought they looked like a side that I've got an outside chance of the top four at the end of the season. I know it's a chance. They're also messing Alexander isaacs and send maximum to a key players for them. One big saying. I thought the person was great. They're always a threat. They kept possession well. And what really impressed me about no castle as well was when they lost the ball, they got numbers behind it really quick. I mean, they really worked hard to get back into a defensive position when they lost them. There's a real unity about their team at the moment. I mean, getting the best out of Al miran getting the best out of Joel lenten, you're well look, Sean longstaff. These are not huge names Dan bong. These are not big superstars. Yet the play that's kind of football against a laborious Tottenham say that. And what of spurs against the biggest sides then? The manager is a broken record whenever they play the bigger sides. Talking about squads and transfer

"Like him when I've seen playing for real societal, but this is pretty big step up into the Premier League. I think my hunch is he's going to work okay for them. I think he's a nice player. It's a big money move. They believe in it. And most of the things they've done so far in the market with the new money and seem to have come off. Is that the Callum Wilson anointed himself as the mine that's going to be on the plane to Qatar with England? The right measure that quote from a similarly very confident young man off the back of his goal against Manchester City. I'll tell you nothing against international players. Again, we saw him play last week. We've seen him play before. He's okay. He's okay. I don't think he's ever going to be a superstar. But it might be a decent player, but oh my God. The Premier League is now should be called, you've won. You've won a watch league. You've won the lottery. The big banana league, this is now no wonder everybody wants to come to the Premier League, whether you're already in England, whether you're Scottish Irish whales are from South America or continental Europe, they are just thrown about, you only have to be mister average and you're in there bang 40 50 million, hundred grand a week, one a watch, but it doesn't work out. You sort of somewhere else. Nothing, not because we're talking about the young man from social diet. That's a generalization. Across the board. It's no wonder when people say, oh, everybody wants to come to the Premier League. Of course they do. They go, oh, when it comes, because got a bundle last year. Both in the Norwich is going to travel in a Bournemouth. All these sort of games. They're not going to come for that. They want to come for the money. And when you see the money it has been dashed out, how long can this last? I know what I've been talking about for a few years, but how long can this last before this crashes and bonds because the only thing I keep is keeping it going is Middle East, Saudi Arabia, partly America, and other things, but eventually there's crazy crazy world of the Premier League money hostages be capped off somewhere. But Isaac, of course, coming in as a big signing for Newcastle and like it or not. And like it or not, native, that sort of price tag can weigh heavy on a player. Yeah, it certainly can. I think he's coming across the Premier League just look into just get a feel for it. You know, it could be in for a big shock if he's arriving in Newcastle because it's going to be a big expectation upon him. If anybody leads a line there, you know, you have to buy into the city by into the quarter by into the history. As you walk towards the stadium, seeing statues while insurance and stuff like that. So even though you're not going to be able to share it, they almost kind of want you to have that sort of impact and want you to buy into the feeling the true passion of being a majority as such. But at the end of the day, the fee itself is not what it's not the figure that he put on himself is the fear that Newcastle decided to agree with with his other clubs. So it's going to be a tough spot to be and there's going to be lots of expectation, especially given the fact that for them, they do feel that they are progressing and they are getting better. So is he going to be another piece to this in terms of their quest for success? I think the funds will believe so. I think Newcastle will believe so as well. So for somebody who's essentially still potentially not hitting quite yet, you're going to have to go, he's going to have to buy in so he's going to have to work hard and realize that the Premier League is at times very, very different to La Liga, but with the attributes that he has. And if they've got the right infrastructure in the right manager in play, there's no reason to see why it can't be successful. What is the same for Newcastle going forward this season, Shaq? I think Newcastle will have to have to be able to finish the top 6 and gets into one of those European places. Even if it's the Europa League or Europe or conference league, give them some of their struggles over recent years, I think that it will be a wonderful achievement. Given the second half to last season that they had on the Eddie hole, the silence they made both in January and again this summer. I think that's what the fans are hoping for. "More, I would say they're paying too much for him. Seems that way, Craig, you know, when we sat in our sociality, he's not a player that's kind of stood out particularly. The weekend against Barcelona it was distant and obviously David silver, broadened from he got that goal, which was lucky when it was a big deflection off Eric Garcia, but you take a lot when you can get it. Is rob was said, you'll run illustrator's defenses, that's something that, you know, the same Chris Wood, they got Callum Wilson. Wilson will run around, but is it will run directly on behind. The one thing is young. So in terms of potential, it's there. Every day I come in, I just think the game has got more nuts. It's just tires. I mean, there's no, there's no rationale now to transfers. I mean, previously, and I don't want to harp about years. I'm only going to go back maybe two or three years. You really had to be in the top Echelon to be in and over 50 million. You really had to be now it seems your blogs, all those other ones. So we can't rationalize transfers anymore. We just can't. And unfortunately, that's the way the game's gone and some clubs are benefit from it. And other clubs are just shelling out for fun. I have nothing against the lad themselves with a decent player. It's an international footballer. And it's a great opportunity for them. And he's not the only one who's coming in under these huge transfer fees at Newcastle and around Europe. But let's be Frank. In terms of money laid out on category of players know, the game is just bonkers, it's gone. But there's no rationale anymore. And it seems there's no rationale in the thinking of certain football clubs either. But I suppose Shaq does it really matter. Newcastle owners have got bottomless pit of money. So who cares if it's 60, 70 million? Well, the feeling all along with Newcastle is that they weren't going to just spend silly money. Though, I have to say, I thought the price tag for izak was a little bit excessive for who he is and what he brings. I'm not sure he's the kind of player you smash your transfer record to bring in regardless of who you are and that's when you castle did. But for Eddie Ho while it's tough to question

"Reminder of pernicious wealth underwriting football the match was a live wire from the start city opening the scoring inside 5 minutes after Bernardo Silva found gundan in the box with a cross but Newcastle fought back through the superb and electric Allan San maxima who escaped double coverage in the 28th minute to curling across for Miguel maron to belly flop at home ten minutes later it was ASM again driving through the middle to feed Callum Wilson, fantastic goal and on the other side of halftime Newcastle extended their lead to three one a curling Trippier free kick. Wow, imagine if he was American, beating Edison all ends up. It was cities turned to come from behind Harlan for sweeping home eventually from a short corner, Bernardo Silva, then getting on the end of wow, a sublime KDB reverse pass to level the scoring. It ended three three city, dropped though, their first points of the season. This is modern football where the Premier League is really just reduced to a golf state proxy battle Saudi Arabia, hosting Abu Dhabi. Biggest Darby in Middle East history, David. Yeah, probably. Taking place only the day after a heavyweight fight in Jeddah, el, two states, owning football teams so that we can talk breathlessly about games like this, KDB passes that are transcendent and Callum Wilson finishes. And not, you know, the lead student Selma Al shahabi was sentenced last week to 34 years in a Saudi jail for supporting activists on Twitter. That is the context. And the game itself delivered soft power glory to both MBM and Sheik Mansour galore. It was a fantastic game of football. Mostly because Eddie Howe, a gentleman who'd lost ten straight times against Pep Guardiola, summoned the cliched Einstein definition of madness, which is to do the same thing expecting a different result and almost got one. Even though city did what city do, they appear to start the demolition early, gundalian opening the scoring. But before they could do the early and often bit, Newcastle simply snapped up back to life like the undertaker and started to find so much room down the flanks due Linton working so hard Alma run running around with his bullish enthusiasm. ASM just charging at anybody and everybody like a French Jonathan Taylor, he's an incredible footballer to watch David. Yeah, frustrating, I'm sure for Newcastle fans, because when he's in this kind of a mood, he's just unplayable. Really unplayable by the best team arguably in the world. And then other weeks he can just look entirely absent and just not into it. But he was unbelievable in this game. Pep called him a difficult weapon and by the way, pep called me a difficult weapon. That would just become my bio on every book ever, right? It would just say roger Bennett is a difficult weapon. And he seemed to take particular delight Alan from charging at a panic John stones. Just warning shot after warning shot, full Manchester City, which they couldn't fend off for what was remarkable. How staggeringly had the ability to instill his belief out, despite losing game after game after game, against Pep Guardiola and confidence and aggression to his players and it showed first Al muran scored a virus assisted finish that must have felt magical because, well, at the end of last season, that if you remember Jack Grealish, randomly oddly in the moment of fur trophy presentation while drunk mocked the former MLS player joking that Riyad Mahrez had played as badly as almiron and Mickey went Michael Jordan took that person like so happy to see XML S blokes like him and Jack Harrison scoring this weekend. Then saint maxim man told the defense apart fede charging, Callum Wilson, slaloming between like 12 defenders, Callum Wilson's touch delicious is finish outside of the right boot world class. And then that moment David, what do you see? Was it like cities, weakness, so few teams have the temerity to charge right up their gut. What was that to you? Was it a glint of a glass duel? You know, I don't I don't quite get what happened to either Chelsea or city this week when you just look at how dominant and how well they can play football and city even more than Chelsea is hard to explain. I thought cities come back from it is certainly makes them look like the much better team than Chelsea that they are. But look, I think it's tough. I think in professional sport, I equate it to men's tennis, where the top 20 player in the world, a 20th ranked player in the world, can take on and hurt the player who's ranked number one, two, three, or four, all the time. It's very hard to win points. It's very hard to beat people. It's very hard to keep that intensity going the whole time. So many of these teams possess great players. They possess the ASMs. They possess Kieran Trippier with that world class ability to make that free kick. And so it's just difficult. Week in week out through an entire Premier League season, we're going to see teams make mental lapses, even if they are superior. Second half, it was incredible. There was one moment when ha land wrapped a shot against the post and even while they were shown the replay on the broadcast same maximum storm forward. If I remember if you plan on playing with some maximum, I'm not saying stay there, I'm going to get you the ball as much as I can and just keep giving him the ball and taking him on and he give Carl walker and John stones a nightmare at an elite level. We've seen him tear Burnley a part in teams down in the bottom end of the Premier League apart. This was elite level and elite performers. He was sensational. All right, I'm going to ask you as a fan and as an analyst at the next pro. What's Newcastle's ceiling? Because when I look at this, we mentioned some of the good players. Callum Wilson's fit and healthy, I think it can be very good. Why didn't I look at that big field? And I know Joel Linton's been reinvented as a midfielder. But you've got Bruno MRI show very good. He's with Joe Linton and Joe Willock. Yeah. So we're like a guy who when he was 18 or 19, we were super excited. I hadn't quite made the great could he be one of those guys who kind of mid career. You know, kind of reaches the potential that have been laid out for him. I don't know. I'm Joe Linton reinvented as a midfielder. It's a different skill playing field. Absolutely. To what he's already done all his life. Is this good enough? It's good enough an alcoholic. When I saw a long staff, come on, I'm also like, wait, is there somebody in the bench who's at one forgetting? It's really good. It's good enough for now because you can't just, you can't just turn around and go, oh, I'll tell you what, we need what we want Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne. You can't get these players now. So what you do as a coach, you make your players better. And when I heard Eddie Howell was going to turn Joe Linton into a central midfield player, I was like, there's not a chance. I've spent 7 years in central midfielder number ten. It's not happening. It's not going to work. And then you sit there and you watch it and you go, it's only worked. Like that's the power and that's the charm and that's the quality of Eddie Howe, to turn that player who couldn't score off the left hand side of his number 9 into a midfield player. Unbelievable gap. So the city I'm watching Newcastle now and you go, actually, that three compliment each other really well. You've got the physicality of Joe Linton, Joe Willock as box to box, gets in the box scores, goals gets to sit. You've got the brilliance of gimmer esh. I mean, I love him, he's a cult hero already. So you go for now, which it's good enough for when Newcastle want to try and be, which I think is top ten in a good cop run. And there's better place to come. So that is if they finish top ten and they go in a cup run and pass seems to get better as a team, perfect. You're happy with that. All Newcastle fans all got. Newcastle fans get painted of being unrealistic. That's not when you castle fans are about. They want hope. They've got owners and charge and manager in charge of players that perform and care and they want to know that every single week. Newcastle fans will tell you gab. They want to be known as an entertainment side, a hard work inside, you know, recycled bear. They pay the money they want to watch good football. And you want to have the hope that you can beat anyone in the Premier League. And that told me yesterday that Newcastle will not challenge man city in Liverpool and Chelsea's forget about it. The way you're talking, you're not going to challenge well, that's another story. I'm telling you now, Newcastle fans now would snap your hands off for 8th or 9th and go deep into a cop run. All right, Newcastle fans. We don't have to talk about you, but we did today. Do you agree? 8th or 9th and a good cup run. This was satisfying. This particular Newcastle fan, how about you? "Fans dreams. David, can we all agree? Did we not see with our own eyes? Can we not agree? It was U.S. international Brendan Anthony who scored the winner on his Premier League debut? Yes, in the NBA in college basketball and the WNBA. You credit the nearest offensive player rod when a player puts it into his own bucket. This was, I think, calling that an own goal is positively un American. That was a goal. That was an American goal. That was for Brendan aronson. It came off my shin somewhere in there. He said, peace somewhere in there. This kid and his confidence at camp three 30 tweeted us the first 2024 presidential election debate needs to open and close with the question did Brendan aaronson score in the opener, not content though, just with the two one win, Jesse marsh. What happened at the final whistle David with wolves coach Bruno large that the large bargee? Yeah, it was an interesting one. I mean, we don't know the full details or I certainly don't know the full details. You may have done some deep investigative undercover work to figure it out. It sort of looked to me and we've all seen this done that Jesse marsh in attempting to attempting to quotation marks. Prevent a fight managed to instigate a fight or prolong a fight at the same time. We've all been there. We've all done it. That sort of moment where you try to stop it. Now let's no, no, no, as you push somebody a little bit too hard and you get in the middle of it. It looked like it was a classic fight accelerant when he was acting like he was trying to sort of make it all go away. Jesse marsh said afterwards that it was nothing. It was just nothing. Told the media that he was very displeased with the way Jesse marsh talked to his players, Huang. In particular, but Jesse marsh don't care. He do not care like to believe that my lip reading was right that he lent him to Bruno's here and just whispered you lose. Now you have to call it soccer from here on in and Jessie marsh. By the way, give zero craps about what anybody thinks about him, but I did love watching him march up to the lead's faithful in the Jackie Charlton stand. Orchestrate in their post match joy with armed punches and slightly hilarious finger wiggles. It was like some kind of version of badger state clop, a tradition I would like to see repeat itself, please God over and over this season. A signature win to kick off, let's be clear. Play a challenge in that squad in the post Kelvin Phillips and rafina era that were spells in both halves when the defense was split wide open, chaotically wolves just couldn't take advantage of the situation, other teams will Southampton up next, then Chelsea, let's really start celebrating after that. But David, Lee United States of America against full America in October, I mean, is that not bigger than the Super Bowl. It's definitely the biggest MLS game of all time, right? Yeah, that's pretty big. I would counsel roger, I should say, Jesse marsh, I know he doesn't give a crap, but I would counsel him not to become a lightning rod for opposition managers and fans early in his Premier League career. When he hasn't won a lot yet, he might sort of want to sort of tap down that sort of energy. He's a brilliant manager. He's clearly getting everything out of his place. I don't think it's in his or the American states United's interest at this point. Can you if you can, Jesse tampered up? Well that's exactly what he was trying to do in that fight, rod, he was trying to tamp it up. I will say the fight did make me feel a certain sense of relief that Sean dyche is not the Premier League anymore. He might not live to tell the tale. Rod, you're going to talk more about this game with none other than Tyler Adams, you're taping with him later today for episode four of Tyler Adams wrote to the cut pad by Volkswagen. It drops next Tuesday right here on this very pod feed now to Newcastle two Nottingham Forest nil the tune get their first win of the Premier League season over new boys Nottingham Forest after a scoreless first half, Fabian Cher sent a Swiss thunderbolt into the forest net in the 58th minute and then just 20 minutes later Callum Wilson in a tribute to tune support of Phil Mickelson produced a piece of short game wizardry with a deft flick for the second. They're often running in the northeast slash Middle East Russia. Massive day for both of these clubs, Newcastle, effervescent on the opening day of the first full season under Saudi owners, their fans raising a banner, which proclaimed it's a new dawn. It's a new day. It's a new life for any UFC and we're feeling good. Oh, forest sleeping giant they more back in the big time first time in 23 years after a worse than their first championship season. We'd say emerge from the playoffs and the young manager, bringing sexy back, Steve Cooper. They were gay. They were nervy, their squad filled with new players still a work in progress, but they were organized enough to keep Newcastle at the back, tempting to exert unique competitive advantage with some truly bonkers corner routines where they have no one in the area until the last second and every single player just charges into the box like some kind of NFL onside kick drill. Look at it. It's on our Instagram. It didn't work. Q global laughter, but I'll say the very first time it does for ball may never be the same again. Ultimately, two moments of finishing class the second Callum Wilson finished so tasty, enough to see off forest, give them a lot to think about and the way Alan saint maximum and gema carved up the midfield these two are going to make Newcastle and Saudi Arabia look very, very good this season. Leicester two brantford two the foxes campaign got off to a flying start after Timothy castagna turned in a 33rd minute James Madison corner 12 minutes later, kin and drew spree hall caught hold of a Jamie Vardy layoff and sent a grass trimmer beyond the Brentford goalkeeper, but Leicester is as Leicester does second half lapse, allowed Ivan Toney to pull one back for the bees and it was Josh de Silva's curling effort just before stoppage time, which secured a draw for the bees. The post Casper Schmeichel era begins for broad, whose team played with a clenched fist and a glass duel. I actually believe if one of these two clubs could be pulled into the relegation battle this season, they depleted Leicester with Pereira coolly out for 6 months. "Like if Newcastle wind up not being as good as they were. Like I'm buying it, what we saw to end last season from January 1 on, I'm buying it. I think they were that good. But if they aren't, then he becomes a victim of his own success. We all saw that and we thought, oh, wow, they're actually good. And if they're not, this ownership group, we don't know yet if this is like an Abramovich model that they're just gonna go through managers because they've got the money and they don't care about paying guys out. So that would worry me that they just don't have the stomach for it. So that's why I list him. But ultimately, I think they're going to be good. I believe what I saw a year ago. I'm in. They finished 11th, so this question is, who's going to make the biggest jump in the table from where they were a year ago? I acknowledge that it's going to be hard for them to make that big of a jump to shoot up from 11th. But they finished with under 50 points last year, 49. So I think you have to look at points as opposed to where they were on the table. I think it's realistic for them to set their sights on somewhere and like, what do you think? Like the 58 to 60 point range, which would be a nice jump for them. We got a glimpse of what Bruno grams can do. They're superstar potential there, undoubtedly. Got a glimpse of what Kieran Trippier was and his return to the Premier League. It was a huge success until he got hurt. Dan burns emergence was a huge success. And here's why I think Newcastle makes the leap. Those guys I mentioned there, JJ, gamari, started 11 games, only played 17 total. Trippier started 5 games, only played in 6. Dan burn started just 16 games. By the way, Callum Wilson, who wasn't new, but one of their best scorers for them. He was hurt for most last season, started just 16 games, appeared in 18. That right there is a lot of Newcastle's core that didn't play in half of their games last year. And in some cases, not even close to half of their games. And by the way, the signing of Sven botman from Lille may keep Dan burn out of the starting 11 altogether. So they've got depth there now. From Christmas to the end of the season, JJ, they were fourth in the league. So like I said, I'm buying it. And I'm also factoring in this the idea that the transfer window is still open. And I think they will still be heard from. We've seen rumors of James Madison, but the asking price is a lot right now. They may not be willing to go to that 60 million number that it looks like Lester are asking for. But I think they're still moves that are going to be made from that club. I'm in. I'm in on Newcastle. Yeah, I don't think I'd use the phraseology that I'm in on Newcastle, but I agree with you that I couldn't pick anyone else on this. I do think that if the PIF can take their mind off, the live golf tournament and handing out 138 million to fill Nicholson. I mean, you see the Newcastle chairman more regularly with Donald Trump at bedminister than you see him at Saint James's Park right now. And they need to get some signings in. It's interesting to me that this coincides this huge investment in golf from the Saudi owners of Newcastle United also coincides with them as we said last week on the podcast getting a credit line from HSBC. So it seems as if they want the ready cash they're going to pump into the gulf and the money down the line that's going to come from their TV rights and et cetera, et cetera. They're going to sell that to HSBC for a credit line. So it's interesting to me. I expect them to be very active. But they're clearly don't want to pay the new castle tax. I mean, Brendan Rodgers has said that the 40 million that they offered for Madison would only would only cover one of his legs or something clever like that, he said. So clearly there is the Newcastle tax at work. But they need to come back from New Jersey in the gulf and focus on poor already. Did you see what Liv golf offered Tiger Woods reportedly? Between 708 100 million. Just imagine JJ, how wealthy you have to be to say, to be offered that sum of money. Nearly a $1 billion. To play golf and say, nah. Pass like, yeah. I applaud him. Yeah. I actually applaud him. Considering where the money is coming from. So yeah, yeah, it has been jarring, though. You know, like I wasn't joking. I was like, I see a picture of the former president on his golf course, and I see the guy beside him, and I'm like, hang on. I know you. You're a football man. Allegedly. So yeah, interesting to see what happens there. They've got to get active though. I do think if they want to keep that momentum going Andrew, they need to get active. "In some ornithological spice and name it after a provincial British highway, and that is a proper English sports rivalry. This M 23 tussle saw Brighton dominate the first half, but despite that dominance, this Patrick Vieira palace team is tough as nails. They eventually broke the deadlock with a wonderful team gold cap by who else Conor Gallagher and 87th minute own gold did, however, level things up and it ends on us even. The unlikely rivalry was drama film must watch, despite the fact so many players from both sides were Afghan tons of our drama in the first half penalties awarded penalties missed. Goals this allowed all for Brighton and then Palestinian lead against the run of play who else, Conor Gallagher, the best son from shameless, deathly finishing off a 22 pass move that began with the goalkeeper. And the finish could only be described from a Chelsea POV as front Lampard esque, incredibly ensuring palace's fourth successive shot on target at the AmEx, incredibly ensuring that palace's fourth successive shot on target the AmEx ended up as it go all of that stopped right now. Did what brain do? Screwing late to tie things up here with an own goal of Anderson their 7th goal in the last ten minutes for game this season. David, do you watch Conor Gallagher? And think how we might fit into two calls blunt Chelsea attack. What do you think, stay where you are at big scraggly head fish? In a smaller palace pond. Yeah, I won Conor Gallagher. Stay at palace. Maybe even for another season and get even better. Right now I don't know where he'd fit into school system. Because I think he plays better in a central role. But we'll have to see Vieira's getting the most out of him. A poor palace so much drama this season, another game that I just can not believe they didn't win. I'm sure I think we know exactly where tu cool would play and we play him at wing battle. It's very likely. Wolves three Southampton one Bruno laja team get their third win in four over the middle of saints a rau Jimenez stutter step special from the spot Khan a Cody getting his no nonsense knocking on a rebound, and then their dama trouser a barnstormer cancel out an otherworldly free kick from that son of a barrister James ward prowse walls rod are just 6 points off fourth place West Ham and they have two games in hand. Connor Cody first ever go for wolves? He's like the male Becky sauerbrunn. I loved watching the wolves team go mad when the player who's at heart and soul popped his gold cherry, even the goalkeeper ran the whole pitch to celebrate that goal, even more surprising perhaps a dollar or race good his first goal of the season in the knife first minute to wrap up wool's third win in four Premier League games, and he celebrated beautifully who ripped off his gloves to show he had another pair of gloves on underneath, pulling them to his face. They formed a black power fest. It was really beautiful to watch David his first goal since May 2021. Newcastle won Watford won the canonization of Sam maxima continues as the French artist emphatic strike had the tune headed for what would have been their second win of the season, but in the 87th minute zhao Pedro absolutely big boy jamala sells and headed home the equalizer a massive goal in the context of the season as it keeps the orns out of the relegation zone by just one point Newcastle, meanwhile, drop into 19th place. Newcastle unveiled new signing Chris Wood who they took to weaken Burnley get the goals they need to replace the injured Callum Wilson or while allowing themselves to drop the pun in their signing tweet tunes got wood 5th, they're definitely just in it for the crack and wood started, but as long as he kept quite but what for their new signing, Brazilian Samir, so is down to Alan saint maximum. Sorry as that guy Tyler calls him his full name is actually Josh Allen, say maximum. Just a man who creates danger whether it's absolutely no danger at all scurrying into and gaki are working the ball free charging and hell bent on creating terror as he glided past multiple Watford defenders before drilling the ball home. Newcastle fans love players who give their all and no one gives more repeatedly than Alan and it all felt so good too out of the bottom three true joy within touching distance until three minutes to go. Oh, Newcastle of 21 points away from winning positions. And yet again, their joy turned to ashes in their mouth Pedro headed home, a run of 7 straight defeats ended for Ranieri's team though, pith castle David and the Saudi hell, ten games, one win, four drawers, 5 owls. Okay, rod, we've got to do it. "Returned after 13 years in LA, and to see her. In triumph, looking up at the crowd with tears in her eyes as that final buzzer sounded, having brought a championship trophy back to the basketball fans at that beautiful city for the first time since 1998 was to feel the power and and the true beauty of sport. The first thing Parker said, while running over to hugger daughter in the aftermath of the victory, she said, look at the city, man. They all showed up. And here's the Candice Parker to her legacy now securely in place. And here's to all the fans are raised my bud fan blood pump to them. Those have always shown up and those who are just discovering these women as they now become household names across the nation, may we all continue to show up. Good for Candace Parker also a great broadcaster. To the football, though now Newcastle to Tottenham three a game played out in front of a party like atmosphere. There's two fans welcomed Newcastle's new Saudi Arabian based ownership Saudi Arabian based to Saint James's Park, those owners attended Steve Bruce's 1000th game as a football manager with the glee of sadistic lawyers as an anniversary party armed with a divorce papers. The already buoyant tune fans had even more reason to cheer when Callum Wilson headed them in front on two minutes fantastic goal, but the tyneside faithful, then received a stark reality check with spurs reeling off three straight first half goals, including Harry Kane's first, Premier League goal of the season, Eric dyer, turned one into his own net late in the game, but spurs, hung on to win an affair in which the football seemed almost secondary to what's happening in the Newcastle owner's box. Where to begin with this surreal carnival scenes of street celebration and what The Guardian called Arab cosplay as Newcastle fans turn up en masse to ring in a new era. This was new new castle David. That should Renee it, right? New Newcastle. Yeah. New news. New nouveau chateau. Newcastle. But the pith with a fan singing Manchester City, we're richer than you. I mean, those scenes before kick-off David, they were almost like an orwellian fever dream. We knew the routine, the rhythm that felt so normal that a football game was about to take place, but a nation had just brought one of the teams a nation with a, I don't know how else to put it, it gruesome human rights record. Hence, you had a van, pulling a protest poster with Jamal Khashoggi's face on it. Around the ground amazing through countless fans, many of them wearing kaffirs and brandishing Saudi flags. I don't know why they were carrying Saudi flags, they were Saudi Arabia's nothing to do with this. It's pith. Nothing. I don't know. Yeah. Yeah, totally dead. She carried the pith flat. You know, I know Qatar owned PSG. I know Abu Dhabi and Manchester City. But the Khashoggi murder still front and center, this moment. This what they call in England, sports washing, you know, a nation buying a club to try and transform its image globally. It's really next level room. You sort of feel Newcastle fans and also supporters of the Saudi pit, which of course has nothing to do with Saudi Arabia. Jumping through more and more mental hoops to justify this and make it not seem like sport washing also, there's nothing to wash or though it's completely fine. We didn't even use money. We use site credit. And look, I accept that the Saudi geopolitical situation is complex for, you know, foreign governments, foreign leagues, owners, and even the Saudi ruling family themselves. But this is this is bizarre, news today breaking that Premier League owners are just the other 19 Premier League owners are just in uproar about the whole situation because they were kept in the dark until the last minute. The whole scene, it was really a collision of local match day routine and geopolitics, Premier League football and human rights, and you had a fan base's dreams of a long held return to grandeur. Future of a nation's desire to transform its global image to sports. I tweeted, it was hard watching football stare into the abyss just a blurring of the emotional and the rational a place where moral and the immoral Clyde normally. I mean, we'll see what plays out. It's almost always the emotional. It is always football ultimately. We do, and that's why we're having a bloody World Cup in Qatar, which is abhorrent, but at the end of the day, hey, it's a World Cup. That always wins out that was actually watching a Newcastle fantasy. I feel for them having to wrestle with this. There's one incredible pretty much intervene by rob Harris of the AP you can see on this Twitter. He interviewed a fan wearing a kaffir. It was slurping a Newcastle Brown ale. I'd imagine I don't know this is a factor that imagine it wasn't his first. It was before the game. And the interviewer asked him if the Saudi human rights record troubled them. And while wearing a kefir, he said, no, no, I'm just here for the football. Just there for the football. Just a trick. We can laugh, but it is a true turmoil of emotion for the fans. They have, they have suffered 14 years of Mike Ashley slumlord ownership. They feel a surging potent future again is possible or beer and the Saudi. Ownerships of all the human rights concerns that brings, but we should make it clear. I mean, I think it is very clear to many American fans, but for those who aren't, it's important to note that Newcastle not unlike Liverpool where I grew up has been downtrodden for decades by the British government.
