"A letter from is the weekly dispatch, courtesy of our correspondents and contributors from destinations around the world. This week, Thomas Lewis sends us this letter from Miami on how a decade long renovation of the coastal footpath that runs between the city and the sand has reinvigorated its boardwalk. It was a day or two after my birthday last November in Miami, and one night it was around 10 o'clock in the evening, the festivities having well ebbed by then, we opted to go for a gentle stroll through the neighborhood before turning in for the day. Our path took us along the Miami Beach board walk which snakes north for 7 miles from the southern tip of the neighborhood all the way up to 87th street. Its lined by the neighborhood on one side and the sea on the other. And despite it being fairly deep into the evening, the air was warm. The dark sky was clear, and the border walk was full of life. There were couples sharing gelato on the benches that adopted along the route. Teenagers crammed onto scooter rentals whiz by, cyclists passed us too. Dates held hands as they wandered beneath the warm and dim lamp lights that lined the roots and one pair of friends who were walking a dog at the time each had a fresh cocktail in their hands as they strolled along the walkway. Boardwalks were first conceived in the U.S. in the 1870s and they still evoke something pretty specific about beachside towns and cities across the United States. A raised walkway of wooden planks usually lined on one Flank by amusement parks, food and novelty stands and other kitchen attractions of the oceanfront. On the other, the sand and the sea. Miami Beach's boardwalk called beach walk as it's become known to summon the neighborhood, does something different. Well, it isn't made of boards first of all. It's been paved in sections along its length. And the curves of the path are fringed by beach plant life and the route itself gives way to parks, public showering spots, a muscle beach, and offshoot walkways onto the beach itself. It took a decade to overhaul the beach walk, its final stretch was formally completed last summer. But as a whole, it's a refresh of the idea of the border itself, in that it's not simply a walkway through the novelties of the seaside. It's a public space on which life unfolds, as much for those who live in the area, as it is for those just passing through. So the next time you find yourself in South Beach Miami, be sure to take an evening stroll along the boardwalk, down by the sea. For Monaco, I'm Thomas Lewis. Some beaches, you might have gone through earlier and you go back to them and said, where's the beach? The beach is gone. So this is a big problem. Some places are running very slowly. Other places, you know, ten to 15 feet a year. Leatherman pointing to climate change as a cause. 9% of our beaches are running on the average of two feet a year. He says areas that can afford it replenish beach sand via a process called beach nourishment, but it's expensive and not done everywhere. He says one positive development beaches today are not as dirty. The annual beach report card is out from Heal the bay in San Diego County did well for the most part, loop Ginger's repeal the bay. Our most recent report found there were a couple San Diego counting beaches that were among the most polluted last summer. Those are two beaches located near the two on the river mouth. One is right at the river mouth and then another one less than a mile north of there. There were some of the most polluted with fecal pollution, which is no surprise because the Tijuana River drains out. In the south part of the county and carried with it. Sewage pollution from the watershed and the city of Tijuana. Those were the two what we call beach bummers. But we also have what's called the honourable where we highlight beaches that had some of the best water quality year round and three San Diego beaches ended up on our honor roll. Two of them are in the Carlsbad area and the other one in Solana Beach. Let's start with Tijuana that has been obviously an issue for years. What kind of concentration of the matter that you're finding? What is this Presenting to people in terms of health risk? Sewage pollution carries with it a lot of harmful Human pathogens, so that could be harmful bacteria that could be antibiotic resistant bacteria. It can be harmful viruses. It can only take one exposure and you'll get sick within about 38 of being exposed. And depending on your age and your immune system, your symptoms can be mild, or it could be more serious flu like symptoms. There have been studies on how many people exactly that and it tens of thousands every year. In Southern California, and that comes with health care costs in the millions, tens of millions and across the whole country. Approximately 90 million people get a waterborne illness, resulting in about $3 billion in health care costs. It's a big problem, and it's likely under reported because the symptoms are so similar to other things like flu or cold, and because symptoms don't set in until a few days after you've gone swimming, the numbers are likely higher is heal the bay in on conversations with the federal government at all about what is trying to be done. Between the U. S and Mexico to fix the issue. No, we have not been contacted by the U. S. Federal government or the government agencies in Mexico, either. The U. That's why those North County beaches tend to get better grades and also, you have to take into account the Tijuana River. That can impact beaches from the border all the way up to Coronado Sometimes is there anything over there by La Hoya Cove or the Children's pool to show anything from seals and birds? And that's a big issue, too. I can't speak on that. But there are, uh, studies that can be done. You can look at the DNA that's present in the water and see if some of the fecal matter is originating from birds or animals, Other animals and when we're talking about birds, in particular heard fecal matter has been shown to pose a health risk to humans. And when we're talking about human sources, birds could be considered a human source because you have to ask yourself Would these big flocks of birds be here? If the warrant garbage cans or there wasn't a big pier or weren't restaurants? So I think a little more creatively when we're talking about what a human source of Spiegel pollution And then how do we look elsewhere in terms of Ocean Beach? Mission Beach Specific beach by and large and you go county beaches were really good. There were some mission be Beaches that had been seized during the summer. You know, those aren't those aren't great that we'd like to see the problem with Mission Bay is it's kind of an enclosed areas, so some of the pollution can get trapped in there, But most of those beaches got A's Luke Ginger with heal the bay. "We're talking about fifty three's horse because you've got one that that you've been heavily involved in in restoring. Can You? Let us sit back put our feet up and just tell us the story of this particular airplane and Maybe even backtrack a little bit sort of how you how you came across it what was the path that led you to it, and then the airplanes history itself yeah. That'd be more than happy to so just I've been lucky enough to be involved with another organization and warbirds Incisa teenager, and that was the Berlin airlift historical foundation They have this fifty four spirit of freedom. which unfortunately was just written off due to a tornado passed down in North Carolina. But I was I was lucky to be involved with that and be around Douglas Prop liners in big airplanes warbirds since I was a teen about fourteen or fifteen. So I I've been on the airshow circuit and I had been flying with Tim on that airplane and working on it. So I really got a really good hands on experience on working on these things. And I just so happen to be on my way home from Ground School for my airline that I fly for about five years ago. Now, her now I'm sorry, six years ago. And I was driving back to Pittsburgh and just got tired of being on the interstate. So I started taking all these backroads just trying to get lost. and seeing what I could find stumble across and ended up coming through this little town in Ohio called beach. City Ohio. And came around the bend and there's a grass airstrip sitting there and Kinda like flying community. There's houses with hangers attached to the. And then down at the end of the airport where the road parallels the runway there was. About twenty open air hangars that were in deplorable shape with their rotting away underneath of them. And right on the other side of that hanger was this DC three just. Basically, you know it's painted been oxidized and was turned powder, and there was mold growing on it and just windows were laminated didn't fogged over and the fabric honor flight controls were torn and it was just about the saddest thing I think I've ever seen in my life. And knowing that that airplane deserved better and I always joked about me and I'd love to find one of those barns. Fine words. You know it's kind of a dream for some of us out there that maybe one day you'd be Lucky enough to stumble across something like that. And and and here's this DC three that I know nothing about that clearly hasn't flown in ages. And I pulled off to the side of the road and walked over and walked around it and just everything about it just broke my heart and you could tell, and we always talk about these old airplanes having souls but this thing. This thing was crying out for helping and I cure it and I don't know why but right then and there I just kind of looked at the airplane and I said don't worry old girl. I'M GONNA I'm GonNa do something help you And When I left that day I was on a mission to track down the guy who. Owned it or whoever owned it, and I was going to try and see if there was something we could do to save. And that's pretty much how that started. Did you ever think that. You'd you'd actually own something like this I mean this is the spree a significant. Did you ever think you'd actually make it happen? no. I always thought I would own award and and have an organization of some such but My sites were being set on either a bt thirteen or maybe a cheese six. something a little bit more manageable and definitely a lot smaller. But it was just one of those things that I. You know has been working with Tim in the C fifty four for so long and I saw how essentially three or four dedicated people could make a four engined douglas work. And I thought well, if I could get two or three dedicated people, there's no reason we couldn't make a DC three work is half the size. And Tim always said that you know in his words he said anybody can operate a DC three if you have a little bit of knowledge and. He always said there's hope for you to on day. It was a joke. You know what? I he was right, and here we go. So we're going to give us shot so. That's awesome. So so what was the next step? How did you go about tracking down the owner? So I actually went on the FAA's website and just typed in the on number and. and. Sure. Enough. It came up with the gentleman's name is name was Ken Joseph. And So I saw that he lived in the Akron area somewhere. So then I just googled Ken Joseph Akron Ohio. And every Joseph that popped up I just blindly called and asked if they were the individual that on the DC three at the Beach City Airport.
