"Like, he couldn't have looked any worse, put it that way. I had a bad experience and embarrassing one at the Lakers game. I'm walking around. I think I'm a big deal at SportsCenter. I'm walking around right before the game, all the celebrities. And then I see Justin Timberlake's there. Brad Pitt's there. I go up to Brad Pitt. I said, hey, Brad, I'm Dan Patrick SportsCenter. He has no idea who I am. Well, I go back and sit down and rich eisen's wife was there next to me. And she goes, hey, you got a booger in your nose. And I go, what? I do. She goes, yeah. I said, oh my God, I just walked by Brett. So Brad Pitt's sitting down, looking straight up my nose. And he's got to be thinking, that guy had a booger in his nose, man. Yeah. No matter what. He's not reaching out and shaking your head. No, no. He's not nice to meet you. He's only thinking about one thing at that point. Who has more to gain from winning a championship? Staffer LeBron. You know, I think it's Steph Curry because I think pretty much everyone in the world, the basketball had stamped LeBron as the best or the second best. And the jury's still out. Not for me, I think Steph Curry's all time great. How does he top ten? Yeah. Top 5? He might be top 5. He might be. Like, if you don't, like if you can get past like, he's not gonna dunk on you. He's not gonna do that, but he's in assassin out there. He's a killer. He's a step above Larry Bird. Yeah, 'cause the longevity is gonna get me in trouble. If Larry would have played, you know, like if he would have kept on going, late and I mean, yeah, Larry Bird would be better, but like, longevity does matter. It's like, it's the reason why LeBron is numbers are gonna be off the charts. So, and I know Steph Curry resting those deprivation tanks and he's got body work people and all that, you know, back in the day, they drank a 6 pack and smoked a cigarette. Like that was their recovery. So I get all that, but you can't look at body of work when you're talking about the all time greats and not factor in. Like the longevity of it. Well, that's why what LeBron has done, he's got the greatest resume in NBA history. No question, right? He does. He might not be the greatest player, could Steph Curry move past LeBron in your opinion. Yeah, with the championship, this championship, you would put him ahead of LeBron on the all time low. I don't know about that. That'd be really, but Steph's story, if they win again this year Dan, this story's not over. Oh, I know, and then he would say, look, I want another title without Durant. Because we were like, oh, well, Durant came in. You won a couple of titles. I mean, anybody that you did that as an argument for LeBron LeBron joined D wade. If you have a problem with the super team, you can't pick and choose what super team you have a problem with. You can't just say, like, I'm okay with what LeBron did, but I'm not okay with what step did. Like you can't do that.

"I think he was complimenting me by calling me that. Say, I'm going to call myself this, but I figured if Kobe co signed on this or signed off on it, then literally then I was pretty good. But you faced all of these guys, didn't you? Yeah, I mean, Kobe was hit his shot making ability was off the charts. You know, I think it's very similar to what we're seeing right now with the skill level of the player. It was an anomaly back then for a guy go right, go left, step back, right, step back, left, finish right finish, left, like most guys had tendencies to do 5 things. I went, I had a matchup with Kobe one day, so I wanted to watch film, you know? So we have something called synergy. You can get his last hundred clips. He took 98 different types of shots, then I asked for another hundred clips, and there was like 74 different types of shots. I went into the game like, but what was the scouting report on Kobe? There is none. I mean, portion. There had to be. Yeah, yeah. You were more dialed in to where your help was coming from. Don't let him get to the middle of the floor because we're not going to help you there. You're going to have somebody on the baseline. It's more like that. I'm telling you, I can tell you Tracy mcgrady and the hesitation. Vince Carter, Paul Pierce. They all had about 5 or 7 things they did. What about LeBron? What did you try to get him to do? Yeah, so LeBron at the back in the day, hesitation right or when he goes left, he steps back. So you kind of want him not to get to his right hand. You know, what made LeBron great back then was his passing, right? And this is all pre championship LeBron.

"Going to be able to put the best stuff together. I'm not sure if it's the best thing for college sports or college basketball and coaches. Many mid level coaches are going to get fired because their best players are leaving. And then they have a struggle year and another struggle and they're gone. I mean, it's not great for the profession. I don't think it's great for the kids. I'll leave you with this, have you recruited LeBron's son? Well, he was out west and I can't mention all that. LeBron's a friend, but his son did get scholarship papers when he was born. So I sent scholarship papers a minute. He was, I said himself. But to the hospital. LeBron's a great friend and I'm not allowed to talk about it. He's a recruitable athlete. Oh. You'll get me in trouble. I know socks. Hold on, socks. What kind of socks do you have on today? Adidas. Don't tell me. Do you have socks on today? Yeah, Adidas. Okay, do you remember the flower we want you had the last time? Yeah. Yeah. What? Yeah, what about it? I'm in your head. You remember before the game you go on to court and shoot. Yeah, and I put on a damn display when I did. No. Now the dating stuff didn't come through. No, no, no. The fire department came over that day. And they said, oh my God, we got to put that guy's arm out. It's on fire. I call, okay? You know it's a true story when you were up at UMass and I was putting on an aerial display and a shooting in a shooting performance there. With flowered socks on. Yeah, and that's what the great ones do. Pitino offered me, just letting you know. I like it when you have nothing to say. It's great. It's great. It doesn't happen very often, but I do not. Not really. Hey, good luck. Next year. And I appreciate your time as always. That's coach John calipari. He gets tickets to the Knicks games. Got him all fired up there. Not allowed to talk about LeBron's son, getting him in trouble. All right, well, take a break. Brian scalabrine. The Celtics broadcaster will join us coming up. We'll get phone calls as well. "Every player that comes here thinks he's one of them. I know, but not all one and done. No. And I tell them, don't come here thinking you're staying for one year. Talk about two and three years. And after one, if you're able to go, I'll be the first one. Right now, I'm dealing with when the season is in season. It's all about team. I'm not worried about individuals at that point. But when the year ends, it's always about the individual player what's best. That now, not only MBA, it's thrown into transfer portal. So like with Oscar, he was in my office yesterday. And I'm talking to NBA teams. I talked to one owner about Oscar because he's going to do some more workouts. And my thing right now is to do everything I can to help Oscar get in that league because I believe they'll stay. Oscar. I just want to let people know who you're talking about. Oscar shibe, who's going to be a lottery. Who no one who won't be a lot of respect. But no one knows. It was. No one knew who he was, he comes to Kentucky all of a sudden, this could explode. And I'm telling you, the greatest kid. Do I want to coach Oscar another year? Yes. What am I stupid? Stupid? Yes. I want to coach him another year. But if I'm doing right by him, I got to give him every opportunity to run this out and see exactly where he is. And so, but I've also had to have kids walk in and say, coach, I think it's better that I leave. I was with CJ Frederick and walked him through that situation and tried to help him and told him I'm disappointed you're leaving, but I understand. And let me help you. And you walk through it that way.

"He'll join us after what he saw last night, Celtics dominated the 76ers, Joel embiid came back, wasn't at full strength and here's his head coach Doc Rivers talking about the MVPs performance. You know, early on, I thought he got a rhythm a couple of times and I thought we were out of rhythm as well. But we expected that. We knew there was going to have to be some kind of growing pains. Bringing them back and so I'm glad we got it out of the way today. Well, you got him back, got maybe his legs underneath him a little bit. He was wearing a brace, and wasn't really a factor, but then nobody was really a factor for Philadelphia. They got what they wanted. They got the split. I wouldn't have had embiid, go to Boston and play in the game. I would have had him wait, a couple more days, and then maybe you get him to be 100% healthy, or as close to that as possible. But you got the split. That's what you needed. That's what you wanted now. You go back home. The Lakers, they want more than a split at Golden State, game two coming up tonight. The Golden State is favored by 6 in that game. And in case you're wondering, for entertainment purposes, only the over under for Anthony Davis, 26 and a half. LeBron 25 and a half, Steph Curry over under his 30 and a half. Stat of the day brought to you by panini America, the official trading cards of the Dan Patrick show. It's a big game for the Lakers. It's a big game for Golden State as well. But if you win both games in San Francisco and then you come back home, now you got them because maybe Golden State can take one of two there. And now it's three one and trying to overcome that, you're not the same team you were last year. And I do think the Lakers are a better all around team than Golden State. But that's with Anthony Davis playing at a very high level. And that's always the challenge. Back to back games for him and the over under 26 and a half. It feels like they're just begging you to take the under. Like there's no way he's going to put together back to back great games. But he did this against Memphis, where it'd be a really good game and then an average game. But this is a game he's going against the front line that's not imposing at all. But getting him in rhythm early, LeBron talked about that that getting him shots early and then getting him in the flow of things and then he is great at both ends of the floor. Blocking a lot of shots there. But the Lakers tonight, Ed Golden State, there's 6 point underdogs. Age 7, 7, 3D show email address DP at Dan Patrick dot com. Twitter handle at DP show. Kentucky takes big lead, downs No. 10 Tennessee 66-54

"Kentucky sweeps the season series offsetting tenth ranked Tennessee 66 54. Oscar she weigh paced four wildcats in double figures with 16 points. Chris Livingston had his first career double double with 12 points and ten rebounds for a Kentucky team that jumped out early, taking a 20 point lead into the half head coach John calipari. What I liked was how we defended and how we rebounded. We out rebounded them by 8. You understand in the country. They're like the best. There are plus 8 rebounding. And we ended up being plus 8 in the first half. Santiago vescovi tallied a game high 17 for the volunteers who upset top ranked Alabama earlier this week. I'm Denny Capp.

"So anyway, and that aspect is really going to be good. But what else on the tournament? Okay, so here's another one. Here's another one we haven't talked about this. You and Gary might have a couple of weeks ago when it happened. But how do you evaluate John calipari now at Kentucky? Because they had a great regular season coming off a horrible regular season last year. Due to COVID to some degree, they were great and the regular season, everybody was happy. This is a team that's got a chance. I picked them to go to the final four and they lose in the first round. Two at least the team that wasn't a one and done. At least Saint Peter has made him look a little bit better by going all the way to the elite 8. But again, if you're a Kentucky fan and they're split right now, there's a lot of Kentucky fans hit me up saying, you know what? I want them out. And I'm saying, be careful what you wish for. Be careful what you wish for because it could get a lot worse in the Billy Clyde Gillespie a couple of years. They ran to be out and tubby's numbers were almost identical in the last 7 years as John calipari is his last 7 years. So they ran him out because he couldn't get good enough talent. They would run out California Perry if they were going to run him out for having too much talent and not doing enough with it, not winning enough national time. I mean, this year is just, I mean, you got to get past the first round, right? So how do you, how do you feel about John Kelly Perry that Kentucky going forward? I think I want to give him a little more coming out of chance. You know, I think he's a sound over and above the recruiting thing. I think he's a sound coach. I was always believed that but you're right. I understand it's a different evaluation process down there. You're held to a different standard that the whole big blue nation thing takes itself very seriously. I think it's safe to say. It's a different kind of job, even I don't know if you're closer to the collegiate scene than I would now. Another thing, I mean, the nature of what the program is all about or what it is made it into. But with Kentucky is just different. There's even with Kansas having, by the way, just passed them all time. Now by two games, right? They now have one two more games all time to Kentucky. But it's just the nature of their fandom, the fanaticism of the whole way, and it's been the single most unifying force in this Commonwealth of Kentucky, really, to the extent that the jayhawks is an important as they are. Aren't quite that in the state of Kansas, there's no Alabama football, Kentucky basketball to me are very similar..

"He could be eligible for the draft. I think that he's probably eligible for the draft. We don't have an answer on that, though, the NBA has not ruled that he will be eligible. He has to first declare for the draft and everyone at Kentucky seems like he is coming back to school. Anyone that you ask with sharp's family seems to say that the plan as of right now is to return to Kentucky for the 2022 23 season. But there's this thing hanging out there where he could enter this 2022 NBA draft cycle and almost certainly go in the top ten. I'd be stunned if he fell out of the top ten at the very least. Could very well go in the top three if things really broke right for him in the pre draft process. So I ask you this. If shade and sharp was to enter the draft. Yeah. Where would you rank him on your personal board? And I don't like getting into, look, all of the statements publicly have been shade and sharp is a 2023 NBA draft prospect. They have been, they've opened the door a little bit, I think. And by John calipari saying that shade and sharp is not going to play this year. I will say, I think that that is exactly what shade and sharp should do if he is going to enter. This draft, but that is not a confirmation that he is going to enter this draft. It's just a statement that I think keeps his options more open at this point to potentially enter this draft if he decides to. Look, I'm not ranking shade and sharp on my board right now. And I still haven't asked you a question at this point. It's all right. I've gotten there. Like, ridiculous situation that we're in on some level. Where would you rank shaven sharp? Let's just start there. It's so hard. I would say what the weaker perceptually draft, I don't seem falling outside the top ten. I think I have like 7 or 8 or so right now. And if he doesn't play, you're judging off high school tape, you're judging off grassroots tape. And you're going to judge off of individual workouts, which he's going to look insane because he is a runway. He's going to be an incredible testing, looking athlete, his shots improved, shot over 40% on the Nike UBL his last summer. I don't know where he goes. I don't know what he does. I'll just say this 2023 is loaded and I know it shifts. I know it changes, but 2023 draft 51 by Yama and scoot Henderson. Derek lively and drink Whitehead. That can all figure its way out. It's a lot easier to slide in right now..

"Within this game and in terms of like what his impact will be as a freshman college basketball player this year, like he'll be one of the 15 best freshmen in college basketball this year. It's just that next level leap where, you know, when you're trying to bully severe Wheeler and tie tie Washington, it's a little bit different than one you have to go out there and try to bully Jimmy Butler every night. Right? It's different. It's probably not gonna work as well. There's not 5 foot 8 5 foot 980 pounds. Yeah. And like I said, like, Trevor kills deserves all the flowers. He was fantastic tonight. And by the way, again, another guy, I thought his defense was phenomenal. He was a monster on ball defender. He is a significant reason why Tai Tai Washington went three of 14 from the field and generally just struggled to go anywhere. And I think that that's the next place that we go here. I mean, I think I was probably a little bit higher on ty Thai than what the general consensus is. In terms of draft prospects, did this game change much for me? I mean a little bit, I would have liked to have seen him not take, you know, ten mid range jumpers. That's less enthusiastic, exciting to me. When I look to from three, I thought that when he played a bit more unselfishly, I thought he had some really good passing looks. And some of them Kentucky just didn't make, but I thought that, for instance, that little wrap around to I believe it was Oscar in the final two minutes. That was really an impressive drive, bring the big toward you, wrap around pass using your length to hit Oscar, like right in the chest and Oscar goes up and right? It felt like in John calipari mentioned this at the halftime interview that he was asking Thai Thai to be aggressive and try to do too much. When I tie tie, I like him more as like a connective piece guy that can also be a great playmaker. I don't want him to be the crazy over aggressive guy, unless he really has it going and then by all means do it. But like, I don't need him taking like 8 or 9 shots in the first half, just to prove a point because you're trying to be the guy. I like him best when, you know, he's running a secondary ball screen and getting into the middle of the court and the defense is collapsing around him and he knows where to hit like hit reads, right?.

"And you add in some of these other things that are going on right now. And I just, you know, again, I think it's the honor of Williams retired. Mentally, you always get this phenomenon, because he's not the first, but it's happening or the kids skip into senior year in high school. They were even before they had an image in like this thing. This was a possibility. Now it's going to be who knows. By the way, bob, before we go, congratulations. To one John calipari, who, by the way, they had a thing that you mass this past weekend as well. I think he was at the Hall of Fame, but they had a statue of what can be called Perry, but Cal Perry's had a good week. He gets a statue unveiled in Amherst. He also got his first number one player to commit and a decade. A decade, bob, how crazy, like when I say that, doesn't that for you? Yeah, that's surprised. Okay, we're from the kid with the kids hating sharp from Canada. I love this kid. Next year, Kentucky is going to be kind of back to the way they recruited. And I was actually on a walk with my wife, walking the dog this morning and I told her that and I was trying to explain to her why. And she actually had a great partner. One of the things I told her was, well, I think cows kind of on a mission now. They were so bad last year and they haven't gotten a number one player since New Orleans Noel a decade ago. And she made a great point. You said, well, yeah, but how about the fact also that coach K is leaving? Roy Williams left. Didn't it open things up for Cal? And I said, you absolutely right. Absolutely. Now not to not to name drop, but doctor Jay told me about the statues that they just put up at neighborhood. She's got one too. He does. Yes, we can't forget doctor J calipari can be, and who is the fourth? Exactly. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So now I have to go up there and check that the statues out. But so anyway, well, listen, get back to your book on the Lake. We appreciate you taking 45 minutes out of your very, very busy schedule. Yeah, I know. It's a very, you know. It was really hard to carve out the time. You look, you look even more relaxed than usual. I have to say, but you got to get back to reality soon, bob, because NBA is starting up. October 19th. Are we going to are we going to try to figure out a way to maybe make a preseason appearance? We should try to find a way to either go to if it's allowed to train in camp or preseason game. Yes, I think that would be advisable. Yeah, I'd like to do that. We're working on we're working on email, don't go. I was texting with him the other day. He wants to be on the pod. We got to try to find a way when he'll come on. Okay, fine. All right. All right, enjoy your time in Maine and have a lobster roll for me, bob Ryan. We'll see you next week..

"News radio. Wait, 40 wh s back at it. Hearing it on Franklin Auto Countdown to tip off shows the cats get to set to take on the Tennessee balls. And for more of his thoughts on imagine once again the UK coach and Tom Late last year, Cal Fulkerson had been 27 in the game appear 16 down in Knoxville. What's the key for your big guys in defending him? Well, um he's going to get points because of how he plays and what they'll do. They'll go at him, and he's probably confident walking into this game. Um, Nick wasn't the physical guy. He cannot, You know, he kind of got into Nick's legs. Um, but we'll see. We're going to play him and Have a game plan on where he's trying to catch the ball. What he's trying to do, and Here's how we're gonna play it. And But at the end of the day, this is a game. Man. Oh, man. Oh, You better be able to get open. Well, he's denying. We'll work harder to get open and he is to deny you the ball. Trying to post up Well, he's going to try to keep you from catching it. There be work harder. When I deliver the path Well, he's kind of in my lane well, work harder to be able to deliver the path. On a rebound. It's gonna be a scrum bodies. You're going to be hitting the floor. It's how they play. You want that? We got guys on the team and I keep coming back to you want to build your confidence? Do something that's really hard for you, over and over and over and over, But we got a lot of guys on this team that when it gets physical and rough, it's very hard for them. So I said, This is one of those games that you work on. You've got to play before you catch the ball. You gotta rebound before the ball. It's the rim. You gotta fight for position. You can't be standing straight like you get blown out. So you know all stuff we're talking about, But look, it's another hard game, but it's a great opportunity for us to ranking. We got to get this going at some point. Why not? Now? That's what I told him to that. I'm going to crack through it sometime. Why not cracked through now? One more segment with Coach John Calipari. When we come right back. This is the UK SportsNet won the game clock is winding down, and so is that plate of piping hot steak nachos. Your eyes are on the last play, but they're also on that last chip.

"Second half of the UK health care John Calipari show We are leading into coverage of UK women's basketball. They are playing at Ole Miss tonight, down in Oxford top of the hour with Darin Headrick on the coal as they go up belief with their third straight win. Onboard trying Tolo solidify their spot for the SEC tournament. Chris in Jacksonville. You're next up with Coach Cal on the Clarks pumping shop phone line, Chris what you have Hi, Coach. I'm a big fan down here in Florida. And you won the most important game for me because I was at the game and games old, So I appreciate that, Um, one of the things that I would think would kind of help. Address some of that fan frustration. That phrase that comes up of you win or you learn. Well, we've had more learning opportunities this year. I guess you could say than we'd like, What are some things that you think you and the staff and players have learned from this season. Thank you, Chris. That's that's really It's good and again, some of it They'll be an evaluation at the end when we're totally done and we can look back at the full body of The season. But I would tell you, um The summer in building our culture and what we do in the fall. We always knew it was important. But we didn't know it was this important. We didn't know that getting attitudes and non negotiables in order before we come back in. Fall was always done in the summer. The habits The new habits that were created. Um, Now we understand the importance of it. And then the other thing is throughout all this stuff. Um, you know, when you look that every team I've had is different and I get that Every team needs something different from me. A zit head coach in our staff, and I get that Um But more importantly, You know now shooting is even a bigger Bigger deal than it's been. And it's not just it's everywhere. I mean, you got to be able to make shots. Because you can run great stuff. You guys be wide open, and the guy goes one for eight. He goes one for seven. He goes two for 12. And you look and say, tenable more wide open. Well. That's the game is changing, and I think again shooting there's a premium. Um you know it and then How much defense you willing to give up. You have more shooters, maybe have three shooters of four on the court. Um, you know, I'm still not sure I want this season toe wind down and come up with that, but Um, you know, and then let me the last thing you start learning about yourself. And what exactly You know you can take and what you know, like this is it's been hard on the staff has been hard on me. In and people said no one's feeling Sorry and I've said it before. I've been so blessed. I can't feel sorry for myself. But Losing and the way we're losing. Has really been hard pill to swallow. Because we want to help more. You want to do more. You want to do something to help them get over the hump. And we haven't been able to do it yet, but I'm not done just not done. Today. They'll tell you the whole practice Woz the last four minutes. And lowering these turnovers. Being tougher with the ball. Um, you know the spacing on on on post stuff, Because if we are gonna post it People gonna be trapping. And then when they did you saw Olivier, throw the ball to Isaiah, who dumped it. Um But, you know, we just got to keep going and knowing that when you're in these situations you can blame. You take responsibility and keep working to change it. Gal since we last talked on this format where we have a little more space tow talk. I know you probably would like to say something about a a friend that you lost in Coach Chaney. Yeah, I was. You know, Coach Chaney. Um, I was a young coach 29 30 years old. Um, in the late eighties. Temple was number one in the country. I get to U mass job, 89. Think was 87 88. There were number one in the country. And When I took over the job. Question I had was Well, they're number one in the country and we're in the same league. Why can't we ever get to that people laughed at me. In the same league. He also had to go and look Say they're selling all kind of shoes out of their shoe store. And that's that. You mess. We're not telling any shoes. What are they doing? They played anybody anywhere at any time. And, you know, we way started doing the same. Um, When I played and coached against Temple, I realized You can't always dictate the tempo of the game. Sometimes it's going to be the other team. Are you ready to play if it's a grind it out game? And I learned that playing against him. How about zone offense at a young age? If we were to compete with Temple, we better have an offense against his own. That's well thought out. He made me a better coach, his competitive spirit. Brought out That competitiveness in me. And we had it was funny when You know, he came in and busted in the way. We have beaten them a few times in a row and You know it was. It was so charged the game. It was one of the great rivalries of that time. Um, you know, the North Carolina and Duke and all that we were right there when it was temple in new mess. And I said to him, you know, probably about five years ago. I said, You know, if you got to me, I probably would have thrown he said I would have kicked yours, You know, and, um and we laughed, but he and I talked. I talked to him about five months ago. We spent about 30 minutes on the phone. And talking about the game, and you know how he thinks it's playing a hitch. It's just that he's a guy that I like John Compton. You never thought would die. You know, it's just We're gonna live there forever and I've been I've been blessed to be able to Um Be in the company of greatness like him. And let me let me just say one thing really hard on his guys. But they loved him and teaching life lessons and doing things away from the court. Um, you know, there's a lot of things that I learned through and from him. That I do today to try to make sure that we're taking care of kids. Yeah, it's a lot of comments from his former players, and you could tell what playing for him had meant to them. We're gonna get to break We'll come back Couple more segments with Cal tweet us A question. Put it on the Kentucky basketball Facebook page or call us with Clark's pumping shop phone line, and we'll be right back here on the UK Sports network. "It on Franklin Auto Countdown to Tip off shows we get you set for the Cats. And the Missouri Tigers and for his next thoughts on the match up one more time. Here's UK coach John Calipari and Tom Leach. Let's talk about the match up with the Missouri and start with the Tillman got 6 10 to 60. Uh, talk to us about the defensive challenge that he presents you. What they do, and They do a great job. He just flies at the rim in transition. They get it in on a Mr Make and up the floor as well as anybody will play and their first look is to him. Just throw it to him. Need the most. And what happens is he puts his body on you. And it's mud wrestling. The good news is As much as the tires you out of tires him out. Which is why he'll get in foul trouble. They played picking roll with him different ways. Sometimes they'll just believe them back. And then other times still have him show hard it that that's affecting them. But you know, you've got to go with him to now. And they are you know they're they're good. They're good at what they do. Multiple pick and rolls. Again, toe free him up. We may shoot balls, but we're doing pick and rolls so that this big help Wolf wrote anybody to try to post that ball. They do a good job of it. Threes of over the course of the whole season, and I've been a big part of their attack. It seems, but lately they've made a good number of them. Right. That's typical as we walk in the gym, you know, on the luck meter. We're not real high right now. Oh, yeah. If you watch TCU, the reason they won the game is they make three three's within the last 2.5 minutes. They were down 9 11. And they made three trees. Bang, Bang, bang and You see, you did a little bit of ours. They had to dagger shots. They say they hooked left. Like wide open jumper wide open layup, Mr Both Bang Bang! Bang down, the other end becomes a little bit of a free throw thing and all the sudden TCU loses. So, um, yeah, they they've been baking them, Um Like I said, this is this is a great challenge for us. We need to keep praying against teams that air power ranked and rain. And now we're just We're just looking for a breakthrough in the last four minutes. We worked hard. Last two days. On last four minutes winning winning time. Work toward on late clock shots. This is what we're just trying to create more clarity. And you know, telenovela. Just paint our own picture. Let's just finish. Let's have everybody continue to watch us. Amen. I hope we're not getting them late in the year can use the word daggers that were Big in the Missouri TCU game used that phrase in that word in your news conference yesterday for your guy's toe, somebody toe embrace that role. What's it take for a guy to embrace the role of warning toe take and make those shots. Don't be afraid to miss him. Hold it. Can't be afraid to miss him and we'll finish up our chat with Coach Cal in just a moment here on the UK SportsNet The game clock is winding down. And so is that late of piping hot steak nachos. Your eyes are on the last play, but they're also on that last chip piled high with succulent steak, lending its deep flavor toe all the fixings. Justus, you reach in sodas, you buddy game on. Beef. "You can talk about the seven that we won, but the two that haunt me or the two that we lost. And don't don't ask me why it's that way. I have a lot of pride in performance and want to try to do the best I possibly can a Zico church to have the best program that creates by you for the players. I'm talking about value in terms of personal development, academics and graduating and developing careers off the field. Career development and and his football players. I mean, and I think that's one thing that people overlook about the program is we really do try to create by you for players, and I think that's why we get a lot of good players. That's Dave pointed out to me right there. If you noticed Devante Smith when he's up there at the end. Is where that patch on his jersey That's a graduate. So next Dave and put his money where his mouth is being like. Yeah, we're about championships. But on I think a lot of times we look at these coaches who we talk about sitting in the living rooms of these players and promising their parents that they're going to take care of him. And oftentimes it's it's Yeah, until I get a better offer to jump on to a better school. Only next table's going anywhere. Right? I think maybe that's one thing to that. This is these elite programs. I don't know if Davos when he's got that NFL aspirations, right. Some of these coaches get to college and they're using it as a stepping stone or they want to get back to the NFL. I don't know that that's happening. With some of these guys, some of these elite coaches, they get to the league or to the status of their at excuse me in college football, and these players show up knowing that they're not gonna go anywhere, knowing that I can come commit to this school into this coach because he's gonna be here because he told me he was gonna be here. I was thinking about when John Calipari was in Memphis memory by the way anywhere. John Calipari is getting sanctioned. He's out before he gets before he gets punished for right. So it happened in at U Mass. Right with Marcus Camby years ago, they gave sanction. He's like, Yeah, I'm going to the league and go to that to the New Jersey Nets. He's a bad room with the Nets. He comes back to college. He goes to Memphis. Thing on the final for the good of the national championship against Kansas, right with Derrick Rose, Mario Chalmers. It's a big three to beat Memphis in the national championship that following off season, that's when when all this stuff started coming out about Derrick Rose that maybe he wasn't in class. Was he not taken his s A T s. They hand down all these sanctions against the AA does to Memphis and John Calipari is like I'm out. I'm cruising to to Kentucky. Kentucky offered me a contract. I'm going, you know who was committed? To Memphis when, when John Calipari dips out John Wall DaMarcus cousins, Eric Bledsoe, three guys currently in the lead right now, who then move on to Kentucky. Ridiculous for Memphis. They follow Calipari to Kentucky. They go to a final four, and the rest is history. But you talked about and I know in college basketball. It's maybe even a little bit different. But college football the same thing. If you're a 17 year old kid, and you commit to this code, you want to know that he's gonna be there that you're going to get the playing time that you're a part of his plans. Beyond just this fall, right? So let's get to some Ryan Day sound here. They lose the national championship Friday, is rumored as a potential candidate for the Jacksonville Jaguars job. Right. So who knows what happens with him of urban Meyer doesn't take it or that's something he's not interested in. Maybe it's Ryan Day anyway. Ryan Day They asked him about losing this game and how covert was a factor. He basically said Look that we have made excuses all year. We're not gonna do it now. Some games being canceled, not being canceled. It just that's what it was. And you know what I tried not to do and what we tried not to do is focus on those things and have built in excuses. We just kept pushing forward, you know, not having guys available. And then, like you said, get into a rhythm. I thought going into the semifinal game against Clemson. We hadn't played our best game yet. And you know, we needed to play our best game tonight against Alabama. And and then we didn't and one of the honest statements he made here afterwards. I like this next comment here, and this will wrap it up for a postgame. National championship sound was Ryan Day, basically saying the mental fatigue is real right now. Hey, said these air, young men and they've been away from their families. The mental fatigue is real in 2020. And now 2021 Ryan basis. These guys, they just really need a break Right now. They really, really need a break. We need a break. We need to get away. Kids are the guys on his team need to see their families. We all just need a break. And, you know, we've already started to put together the the schedule for the spring, but but we all need to get away for a while. This has been a long long road. Guys, Mr Families and on they deserve time to be with them. And so we'll unwind. For what little while having opportunity to reflect on what this season's been and then get back into it, But I mean, you can't just go back to work here. There needs some time to rest and reflect again and I need some time to go interview with it with Jackson is like you guys take a break. I'm gonna get on a plane to go down to Jacksonville. Actually, they were already in Florida, right? Maybe just hops in the car because it figures that thing out anyway, that wraps up our post game stuff for the national championship. Just back to accommodate made earlier in the 504 checked in about the World Series trophy, and I was riffing on the trophy just saying yeah, as much as we didn't like the BCS. I always thought that trophy was way cooler than the C. F. P trophy, And then I was riffing on the Majorly the world seriously, bro. Physical. Tell all these flags man can we get you know a baseball this this texture of the 504 said. You know, you gotta make it about the game, he says. Yeah, make it about the game of baseball making a baseball trophy anyway. Oh, that he's talking about. Also, sometimes, he said, I must have woken up on second base, he said. Sometimes first thing in the morning is the easiest time to get on like that did sometimes sometimes first inning. You got to see a pitcher's Let him find the strike zone. Right? You can work yourself a walk, so Anyway. Thank you, David on the other side back into a little bit more of the NFL lot of the coaches yesterday do there Monday morning or Monday afternoon media sessions. It’s the same old story for North Carolina basketball in loss to the Wolfpack

"On sunday. We spent several minutes discussing a disappointing blueblood with the hall of fame coach kentucky led by john calipari today. We'll spend another few minutes on another disappointing blueblood with another hall of fame coach this time it's north carolina and roy williams the tar heels fell at nc state on tuesday. Seventy nine seventy six so now. Five and three. The other losses are texas in iowa best win over stanford ladder you and i both had north carolina projected as the third best team in the acc in the preseason. Are we still confident. Unc is a top three in the acc. No did i really have them third. I looked double checks man. it's not ideal right now. we both had it. We both had it. Virginia duke north carolina in that order. Well i didn't have carrots. So here's where. I differed in the preseason with some of the projections yours and and others. I did not have carolina ranked in the top twenty five portion of my one two three fifty seven. I i put carolina twenty eight. And i remember before like settling on an ultimate order like my first initial like. Let me throw everything at the wall. I think i'd carolina like thirty six or thirty seven and the reason was they were so poor last year. I mean historically bad. It was one of the five or six worst seasons in school history. Statistically that i was just. I wasn't totally sold on them. Going from fourteen and nineteen a season ago to being if your top. Three team in the acc You know that's probably a four seat at worst. And i wasn't all in on him there. I thought okay. Maybe they can get along the lines of a five or six seed and that was really what wound me wind up with me. Booting them up a little bit. But at this point you know. I watched the majority of that. Nc state game. I would argue. It wasn't even a three point game. Nc state truly beat them by six or seven points now five and three losses the losses all respectable so. It's an interesting situation with unc. Here lost texas in a really really good game championship. Which was obviously nashville. Then they lose at iowa but it wasn't that competitive ninety three eighty. Now they take the road loss against nc state. The win against kentucky and cbs sports classic has almost no value. The win over stanford is solid but otherwise charleston. Unlv north carolina central their next game at georgia tech a week from one. We're talking here. On december thirtieth so i think there is still the chance and with all due respect as always to leaky black here. And he's actually. I think he's. He's been good in spots but they're not as good as they should be. I still really love. The frontline is still think. This could be one of the courts in america but it should be noted fourteen thousand nine hundred last season. Now it's five three. And i'm not gonna guarantee you that this team is heading to the instability tournament and in the preseason. Unc got by on its jersey name. I don't know i. I was always a little hesitant there and some of that has come to the surface. This is clearly clearly not a top twenty five team right now. In north carolina as you mentioned the go fourteen and nineteen last season and the reason that i had them in the preseason top twenty five and one thought that they would have a really nice bounceback season because they in elite recruiting class featuring three five star freshman. The way they're supposed to go from fourteen and nineteen to really good is that three five-star freshmen are great. And they're all fine. I guess but none of them are playing like freshman of the year candidates like against nc state day. Ron sharpe had six points. Fourteen minutes walker kessler had three points and twelve minutes. Caleb love had eleven point four assists two turnovers in twenty eight minutes. Like if you're five star freshman aren't gonna perform like five star freshman consistently well. Then you're not going to go from from bad to to really good. You can go from bad to good from bad to respectable from bad to an ncaa tournament team. But you're not going to be elite unless you five star freshman perform at an elite level. They are not doing that right now.

How Jamie Dixon-to-UCLA died, and what the Bruins will do next in their coaching search

"Go to UCLA the LA times reporting barring an eleventh hour resolution, it appears that Jamie Dixon's candidacy to become UCLA's next men's basketball coaches, ended Dixon's eight million dollar buyout from TCU has become an insurmountable sticking point for both sides, so UCLA no coach still under support. But didn't he he looks like, you know, Steve Laven, you know, the hair. He looks sounds like been Jalan. It's like the same kind of thing. I don't know what Jamie Dixon's going to bring the UCLA. It's not now not now. Now you. He's a California guy. But I think you know, you now you go to the backup options, and obviously the one in north Hollywood north Hollywood guy. Yeah. But you know, coming here. He's got a. It just felt you need more. Yeah. You know, what I mean like that job is a great job anymore. You know what? I mean. He's out his great as it used to be. But you still just because of that you need to make a splash. Right. Well, that's why I was in on them trying to lure Calipari. But clearly Kalahari was going to go out there. It right. And then he did easier to recruit a Kentucky. Oh, no doubt. But if he would've brought that to LA would've been great if you would have brought the one and done to LA on my let me ask you, do you just go and just say, I Rick Patino. Let's do it even with all the stuff that's around him. No, no, no, not yet. You gotta get some point where you just flat out, desperate. Yeah. And and I don't think they're at that point yet. Okay. And Tim temptations a little different now are Lewis. Yeah. Who boy a whole lot different? Yeah. Here in LA. But we do know he can coach and build the basketball team. No doubt about it. Is that we not saying anything about us coaching. Right.

Calipari seals lifetime deal to finish career at UK

"To the men's side Kentucky was bounced from its. Tournament this past weekend with the loss to Auburn. But John Calipari isn't going anywhere. He agrees to a contract extension at Kentucky deal that will see him finish his career there. Had been in contact with UCLA about its opening. The Bruins looking to replace Steve Alford who was fired New Year's Eve had been offered. Forty eight million over six years. He'll stay with Kentucky and Monday on his show on the UK sports network. They'd been talking to me for a while. Dwayne tonight sat down a couple of different times. And he says don't you want to finish your career? Why don't we just do something and you finish it here? And and so it had nothing to do with all the other stuff every year. Then I'm here. Something at the end of the year happens someone's trying to call or talker. And so, you know, it's. This is again, I mean, you think of this job that I have. You think of what we built the culture that we built here we've done it all kinds of different ways. The kids are we get good kids. The academics. That that were allowed to give lifetime scholarships that were allowed to bring these kids back that we we ensure these kids that this is a situation in a culture that's taken time to build and. You know, where else would I want to coach now people to call at the end of every year? They're there, you know, you get calls and. But the reality of it is this has been in the works for a while. And they presented it to me. And I appreciate it. I mean, I I appreciate the administration Mitch and Dwayne and Dr Kapela, oh, and you know, they're they're they want me to be here till I'm done coaching. And and it's funny. Somebody said a lifetime scholarship. I don't know what that means immed- could be two years. No, no, tell me what it is about. I wanna go get my jeans checked or whatever they do. But you know, it's the faith. They've shown in me. I appreciate it. I've let them know that and. In our fans. I mean, yeah, we have some crazies. They don't bother me. I mean this thing is about being up at bat every year with a chance to win. This is a unique place. I appreciate the opportunities. I've had here. And and you know, it's it's it's one of those places that you know, you have to want this to really be here, you can't shy from any of the stuff that goes on around his current deal Kentucky runs through twenty twenty four. Dez Bryant lands one-year contract with surging New Orleans Saints

"I don't obviously. But if I did because who cares? We don't care about the money because it's not our money. Well, let's make it your money guys. Would you spend three hundred and fifty million dollars? If feel competent about it on Bryce Harper. No, I wouldn't. But I do want to say thanks to listen to you make a lot of arguments there in the make a lot of sense. But you can't throw the he's never wanna playoff series, Adam. Because you're the one that's been a spa espousing for the golden bat thing there are many times where he doesn't even get a chance to win those playoffs. Series everything else in that sense rival, thank you drag. Well, that's the let's take that have ninety percent of what I say all the time makes sense. Listen. Traits usually fifties ninety. I mean, that's that's pretty good. But that's the problem dry. Problem with baseball. You're going to pay a guy standing Gundy said this yesterday, you're going to pay three hundred and fifty million dollars who comes up four to five times a game. It's ridiculous. And when he comes off you bats to forty eight it's absurd absurd. Absurd. I listen. I agree with you. And yet he's going to get it from somebody. As is Scott Boris, his agent says Harper's bazaar is now open. Okay. We'll see where that goes. All right. Let's go to college. Let's start in basketball for Zion. Williamson RJ Barrick camera Duke. Did it Kentucky? I have said Stuart's gonna make people pay attention to college basketball before we normally do which is after the Super Bowl. Yeah. It made us. I mean, listen, we've never talked about college basketball so early in the season ever in the history of our show, and we were talking about it yesterday because Duke stole the show they stole the sports worlds. I am Williamson. The thing about Zion. Williamson guys he was a YouTube sensation before this. So everyone knew about this. But to see play out against Kentucky article and to see that he's just not a dunker. He's the guy who has actual game. He has range. He has touched. He could distribute the ball. It is it is absolutely breathtaking. It was amazing to watch. And. Yeah, we're all going to tune into watch. These freshmen bly and watched it fifteen play at see if maybe if they can go undefeated. Maybe it'll be the best team ever, which is saying something when you consider the school. We're talking about it was amazing. It was fun to watch. They had made college basketball interesting in a way that it hasn't been the regular season for college basketball in a way that it hasn't been since maybe the fab five I don't know what the last time we were interested in a college basketball team. Yeah. Your rights. Do we we had this note today dukes go to one hundred and eighteen points in that debut? There were twenty NBA teams in action last night and they play eight minutes longer. None of them got one hundred. Yeah. Utah Utah was a crisis. They got one hundred seven Stu, and by the way, they did it against Kentucky, by the way. Kentucky. Jank John Calipari was sitting there with his laws look on his face. And I can't believe that coach K is now doing what I've been doing for years because coach guys going to do it better than I've been doing the thirty four point loss for Calipari. His worst ever as a college or NBA coach going to college football the first two weeks of the rankings. We have pretty much pick who they were going to be where do you see the possibility of a shakeup happening going in the next few weeks? Well, Mike, this is interesting. Right. And I have a question for you guys are related to college football. But this is interesting. So let's say Georgia beats Alabama in the SEC championship game. There's no scenario which Alabama is not getting it. But what happens there? So does Michigan get bounced out? Once Notre Dame get bounced out, Mike, I would ask you this because they put this committee together to have some sort of vision. Where does this not the four undefeated teams make it to the final four, Mike? Michigan played Notre Dame right now the debt are they neutral field who do you think would win that game? Who was the better to there is no way. Saying michigan. Everybody's saying Michigan would blow out Notre Dame Michigan has gotten better. So is Notre Dame? You realize Notre Dame did since that first game. They have a quarterback who leads the nation in completion percentage. Okay. So yeah, he's heard he's going to miss this game. We'll be back next week. So to say that all of a sudden Michigan with blowout. Notre Dame to me is ridiculous has Michigan gotten better. Absolutely. They've gotten better. But you asked me I've already said if Georgia beats Alabama they're both in Clemson wins out there in and if Notre Dame wins out there in and Michigan is going to get left out. Now, Paul finebaum went the other way. He thinks Michigan may get in over. Notre an undefeated Notre Dame team. I don't think that would happen. But then again, I'm not one of the thirteen that are that are picking that are deciding this.

NCAA's new proposed rules blindside NBA, USA Basketball officials

"And the folks at USA basketball likely did. Some. Version of a spit take at lunch ESPN's Adrian will ask you reporting top officials with the NBA in USA basketball caught off guard when the NC double a. mentioned it's changes and the announcement that had made a future rules around in pro basketball prospects among the policies adopted by the NC double a. include assigning responsibility to USA basketball for something new organization that already told the NCW didn't want to do which is. Bearing the responsibility for selecting elite highschool prosper Factual be allowed to sign with registered agents Let's take. A step back Kentucky head coach John Calipari none of this goes into effect until the NBA, and the players association come up with something and I'm hearing. It won't be until two thousand twenty two so we're probably wasting our breath. Dealing with the ins. And outs of this I'll give an example I'm here. In the Bahamas and the CEO of USA, basketball gym is. Here and he's like saying wait a minute what we deal with one of the. One percenters we don't deal with foreign players we're not USA basketball in a position to try to. Say who gets an agent and who's not and, he and he's. Willing to do summer stuff but. Not himself he wants to be with others he wants to collaborate with the NBA with, the NCAA with. The players association USA together but USA basket so there's a lot. Of stuff that needs. To be worked out I'll give you one they're saying a player can leave put his name in, the draft and if he doesn't get drafted I, wish if he was in the second round he Could go back to college but if they want it to. Be that he can go back to college after he's not drafted my question. Is what if they're. No scholarships at that school because they gave the scholarships. Away because they thought he was leaving what, does it do. Now does he go to another school does he have to sit out sit out. He was trying to leave I just hope as we go through.
