CA Reparations Panel Approves up to $1.2M to Every Black Resident

"I'll be very honest with you. At this point, we got to stop the Democrats. What they want to do to America and what they are doing to America must be stopped. I'm going to repeat that. What they want to do to America and what they are doing to America must be stopped. Hope you saw the news out of California. The reparations board 1.2 mil to every qualified black Californian, $500 billion doled out by every non black resident to black residents who qualify for reparations. What the Democrats are doing to this country must be stopped. You want to live in California, you knock yourself out. You want to live in New York, be my guest. Jeremy Carl Details the Evolving Political Landscape of Montana

"Cut 38. This is happening in Montana. Montana's more liberal than people realize. I want to talk, you know, Jeremy, because it involves the Senate race. People don't get it. And I said Missoula, I met Helena, but Missoula is more left wing than Stalingrad. That place is out of control. You got university of Montana there. Boseman is not too far behind it with Montana state university. Play cut 38 please. Let's post it. Literally holding them hostage. And again, this is such a this is such an exhausted way of commentating on radio and television, but I have to do it. Could you imagine if those people were wearing maga hats and a bunch of cowboys? Could you imagine how the media would respond? It's actually an appropriate thing to keep on saying. It just kind of gets a little tired because no one really cares. But Jeremy, tell us about Montana. I'm worried about Montana. You know, you're letting a lot of Californians into your state. It's not as right wing as people think. Now is it maybe I'm wrong because I heard one interesting point from somebody I trust they said, but Charlie it's mostly Republicans moving into the state is that true? I do think that post COVID it's been a much more Republican movement. And that's good to hear. Keep going. Yeah. And I've actually done some very micro analysis of the Senate like county by county district from the census. And what you see is people moving into conservative and rural counties. You have the most conservative in the last year, metro in Montana, which is callous bell the flat head up near glacier national park growing twice as fast as Boseman, which is more liberal to kind of near where I live. But still a mixed district and I have to say, I know tons of conservatives who have moved here just in the last few years. We are quite a ways from boulder. It's not an accident that the Montana GOP got its first super majority in the legislatures in the last century just this last cycle.

Reparations for Black Californians could top $800 billion

"It could cost California more than $800 billion in reparations to compensate black residents, according to economists, advising the state. Those potential reparations for harm caused by policing and housing discrimination are more than 2.5 times California's annual budget. The state reparations task force will review the numbers at a meeting today. California governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation creating the panel in 2020. It has until July 1st to submit recommendations on how the state can atone for its role in perpetuating damage done by slavery. Ultimately, it's up to lawmakers to decide which if any reparations to approve, opponents say California taxpayers are not responsible for slavery. I'm Julie Walker

Californians eager for sunnier days after relentless winter

"After years of drought, it was too much rain in snow for California. It was a strange stormy and cold winter for the Golden State. This week's atmospheric river was the 12th such storm in the states since late December. Californians initially welcomed the precip in chilly temperatures after a record hot summer and many years of drought, but the relentless storms busted the drought in two thirds of the state and broke precip records along the way. The national weather service says San Diego has already recorded 5 more inches of rain than normal and Los Angeles had the wettest beginning of the year since 2005. I'm Shelley Adler.

California gets a break from drenching rains

"California is expected to get a few days break from the weather. Powerful rainstorms of drenched parts of the state flooding roadways, causing landslides toppling trees and flooding hundreds of acres of strawberries, national weather service forecaster bob orwig says the state is getting a break. California's weather is much calmer than it has been. We do have some generally light rain potential coming up for part of the weekend mostly on Sunday. But or vex says next week could bring some issues. It looks like we may have a more significant storm affect California Tuesday and Wednesday with the potential for some additional heavy snows throughout this year. And some heavy rains at the lower elevation. So we could end up with some flooding issues as we go into the beginning to middle part of next week. So Californians will get a chance to clean up before the next round of winter arrives. I'm Donna water

Think about think about the effect of this on white California and struggling to make a living, you take $300,000 per person. And now, this is a crazy scheme, and we don't at this stage after get into the merits of it reparations doesn't work on so many levels intellectually, but see the Newsom doesn't care. And the task force doesn't care, because this is a matter of trying to implement racial politics. The idea is let's try to buy off the black vote and then we'll turn to the Latino vote, and this is how Democrats operate. It's not based upon is this something that's meritorious as a deserve. Can you really show that these descendants of slavery would be? I mean, when you normally make a case for reparations, you have to show that but for the offense. Does anyone out there believe that a government that lies to the people and hides from the people taxes, the truth about the origins and vaccines for COVID-19, the Russian collusion collusion hoax? And intimidates the people and controls free speech on social media that that government is not totally willing and capable of election rigging, cheating and fixing. Is there anybody out there that believes that? It's a great question. Secondly, you were just talking about Californian pollution and environmental whatever. "I'm sitting right in front of the capitol building in Sacramento and I see about 30 different tents representing pro life organizations that work up and down the state of California. There's youth groups here. There's pregnancy centers. There's educational groups. There's activist groups. In fact, just down the street, there were about a hundred people that just walked down the street to a nearby abortion facility and they're praying there now. And we expect hundreds if not thousands of Californians to be gathered here on the Plaza in front of the capitol in just a couple of hours from now. And you know, California has been facing a real, real bad situation with abortion. You know, they passed this proposition one back in the midterms. They got abortion enshrined in their constitution, but these people here in California are not slowing down. They're not being deterred. They know that they can save lives every day and they know that nothing is permanent when it comes to American public policy. "The Moral and Cultural Case for Teaching the Great American Story"

"I'm talking to Timothy gay line who has written an important book toward a more perfect union. The moral and cultural case for teaching the great American story. So Tim, you know, when we teach the great American story, this doesn't mean that we avoid the ugly parts. But of course, when you're talking to younger kids, it might not be the time to get into that because it's confusing. But of course, we all understand that when you're putting forth a narrative, you're going to leave some things in, you're going to, you know, but what I've noticed and have written about and spoken about a lot, which is why I get so excited about your book toward a more perfect union, is that we have amazing stories to tell. The stories of George Washington's heroism and courage and sacrifice. The stories of Paul Revere, story after story after story that generations of Americans were told, were taught and they themselves passed on that made us the nation who we are to overcome things. I always think of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow writing Paul Revere's ride on the cusp of the Civil War to call us back to who we were as a people to make sure that we understood that we fight these battles again and again in the Civil War of course a dramatic example of that. So what do you cover in your book toward a more perfect union? Well, I must say, I want to solidify Eric, what you have said so eloquently, because in the first part of Torah Moore perfect union, I jumped into pools and pools of empirical data. And I began to look at where and what was the cause of the historic and cultural illiteracy that has become a plague in our nation. You know, until about 1968, you could go to the public schools in places like New York and Chicago and Los Angeles and get a very good education. I have no doubt at all, not from my opinion, but from the data that Americans in those times graduating with a high school diploma knew the American story. They knew significant figures in western civilization. There never would have been any doubt if you, for instance, for a Californian that you knew who father Sarah was, the founder of California, of course he's been totally and completely erased in California.

"Curious your constituents there in California, which everyone thinks, oh, well, all of California's liberal. That is not the case. And I'm curious to know if you're getting response from people there about your decision to stand up and fight alongside these female swimmers and female athletes. Well, we're getting a very positive response from, I mean, every district is going to have a few crazies in it, such that think this is a great idea. And obviously I don't represent something like San Francisco or the east bay or LA or something like that. We're just sort of thinking, but there's a whole bunch of California in looking at look at the map, it'd be probably two thirds of the state, let's say, inland from the coast, 20 miles, 30 miles, it's not as crazy as what. The perception is, right? We're not all the Disneyland. We're not all surfboards. We have a lot of normal people inland that are farmers and ranchers and loggers and miners and drive pickups and they like hunting and they think they should be able to own guns and defend themselves and they think men and women are women and that's how it should be. So there's this really no room for this nonsense. No matter where you are because it's a distraction from what has made our country strong by having people at each other's throats over this crazy Ness. And the bottom line is that the people that are undergoing these sex changes, I've seen stats that the incidence of suicide is like, I believe, 18 times higher than what would be average. I know how fatigued you all are. Governor Gavin Newsom. Just maintain a little more vigilance. The storm began hitting California in late December, causing power outages flooding mudslides and wars. Sadly, 19 people have died. State of emergency director Nancy ward. The ground is saturated. It is extremely, extremely dangerous, especially in these high vulnerable areas. And that water can continue to rise well after these storms have passed. So our message is clear. Please know your surroundings. Newsom says we'll get through this. "Use less water. That is a direct order to some people in the Los Angeles area, starting this week. Reporter Aaron stone joins us now from KPCC to explain more. Welcome Aaron. Hey Elsa. Hey. Okay, so I live in Los Angeles. I just got the email myself this week. Tell us what can I do and not do with water? So every resident in the city of LA will be affected by this. And basically what it comes down to is you can water twice a week for 8 minutes at a time outside. Right, okay, so I'm setting my timer, but can you just tell me because I've only lived in LA for two years? How unusual are these water restrictions for California? Yeah, these are some of the strictest rules we've ever had. Multiple water officials have told me that the severity of this drought has really taken them by surprise. And LA gets most of its water from Northern California, and the reservoir is up there at some of their lowest levels in history. Okay, so what happens if someone violates these rules? What happens to them? So water agencies are being really clear that fines are going to be a last resort. They really want to educate the public before finding anyone for not abiding by the rules. So you could, you know, after multiple warnings, education, you could receive fines of up to $600 if you violate the rules multiple times. And what kind of reaction are you hearing from other LA residents about these new rules? You know, angelenos are pretty used to this. It feels like we're always in a drought. I know. There's a bit of drought fatigue, but I do hear from people that they're willing to sacrifice. They really want to do their part. The question is, how long and how much stricter can rules get? Right, and what's the sense of the long-term here? Like, is this the new normal? Do we expect the rules to get more and more restrictive going forward? Yeah, so long term the climate crisis is expected to continue to make droughts, drier, and longer, and many of our traditional sources of water won't be as plentiful in the future. But angelenos have internalized a lot of water saving habits already, short showers, turning off the water when you brush your teeth, and many people have even invested in water saving technology at their homes. That said, if enough water isn't saved, we could face a total ban of outdoor watering by fall. Wow. All right, that is KPCC's Aaron stone. You heard it from her. Thank you so much, Erin. Thanks, Elsa. I'm Gregory Warner, hosted the podcast rough translation on our new season. We're telling stories about the cultures of work. The 9 to 5. It's a myth and rest around the world. We're talking about a doctor or lawyer instead of someone with hundreds of millions of dollars if not billions of dollars. That's what we mean by rich. Okay so let me go back who she's describing are the very puppet masters that put her in that position hints my cry of foul hypocrisy. Has she cleared that speech by daddy. Soro's because i'm daddy soros. And i put her in that position. Do i want the government to take more of my money right. Well see. that's the whole thing guys like soros and the other super-rich they don't they don't get taxed the way other people do because they know how to hide their frigging money. The boxy is palpable Anyway i mean how much you gonna tax them when you're proposing again a nine point three trillion dollar infrastructure bill and putting that out there to pass Do you know if you taxed all the billionaires like if you took all the money from all the billionaires and just put it like that is going to fund the the budget for what three months i mean. That's the whole deal if you took all their money like you tax them. One hundred percent took all the billionaires money the bill gates to mark zuckerberg's whoever's you took all their money it would fund the government for three months so you know that's that in and of itself is stupid but the hypocrisy there is you were put in place by the rich. Your proposals which again could be written up by a seventh grader have been pushed through by the rich. The rich that are in control. She doesn't mean you. Know the george soros is. She doesn't mean them know what she means. Is she exactly means the doctors and the lawyers and people who are who at a higher income bracket you're not talking about the guys at only islands you know. Where's obama is. It was obama chipping in. I mean like you can pay all the taxes you want to pay like..

"Let's talk about what everybody wants to know. And that is my opinion on. Aol going to this met gala pop up that dress that she was wearing their she had on the white dress in it on the back said tax the rich she shows you sorta looks like a chick-fil-a bag doesn't she. I wish she was closed on sundays. Like if we have one day where we didn't have to hear from afc now afc is but let me just give you my opinion here. And i think i'm right. Afc is is interesting political puzzle right there now. We all know her history right. She's the bartender who runs in the bronx. You know very small district right there. She gets elected. She's you know nobody knows where she comes from in terms of her experience. She doesn't have any and she's in washington dc national knows powerful voices in washington. Dc this is what. I mean chris when i start talking about the puppet masters of politics out there. They love to basically create celebrity politicians and those are the people who is the is the squeaky wheel gets the grease. They're the ones who are out there. Screeching out there getting the attention and make sure the media focuses on them and they become a media darling and then all of a sudden they're voice is the one who is being hurt the most so you remember whenever the green new deal was proposed. Afc was kind of at the helm of this weird and wacky thing everything from trains to hawaii to get rid of airplanes. Getting rid of cars. Everything had to be you know. Get rid of the farting cows. Everything was going to be green energy. It was going to be like what a ninety trillion dollar Overhaul of everything and it was outrageous. And then all of a sudden people started giving credence to it. So now you even have the president of the united states wacky joe biden president. Sippy cup himself. Who is actually doing this stuff with his mind. Point three trillion dollar infrastructure. Bill much of which actually lends credence and gives funding for green new deal ideas. So you see where this came in. You had nobody who was a bartender. She becomes a congresswoman. They continue to give her attention. They she comes out with a wacky est of ideas now you think. She came up with his ideas. Absolutely not but you got people who get behind it. You got the money of silicon valley and then all of a sudden it becomes normalized in washington. Dc so i mean the green new deal was like okay. Who wrote this shit with crayon like this is something eighth grader. Could draw up and now we're actually funding this nine point three.

"Alright so larry elder god bless him running against gavin newsom and the recall election. California didn't work. And i know everybody they wanna come in there and they want to say. The election was fraudulent. It was stolen blah blah. Okay let me just stop you right there. Not everything's rigged okay. Just because the election doesn't come out the way you want it. Not everything is rigged california's already crooked as we already know that okay. They didn't have to rig that election. There was no reason to rig that election california if my memory serves had about six million people turn out to vote for trump in twenty twenty only three million turned out for this recall election so the fault is on the lack of turnout on the part of republicans there and let me also say that basically one third of the voters and i could be wrong. But i'm pretty sure. If i remember right there's about one. Third of the voters in california are foreign born right so a huge number. Maybe it's like twenty five percent but anyway they're foreign born so you have a lot of asians. You have a lot of hispanics but you also have a. The black community is well not foreign born. Obviously but the about you know sixty percent. Seventy percent of that community is going to vote democrat the same way with asian population. Same way with the hispanic population so california's screwed just putting nails in her coffin They've reelected satan so Or made sure that he stays in office in Talk a little bit more about that but Play the a little clip of the larry elder speech. "He beat me senseless with facts January twenty sixteen. I was off by a couple of weeks. Okay that's fine And my life changed at that moment. I know that you've all seen that clip but my life absolutely changed in that moment. I was already struggling with so much of the rhetoric of the left and thinking that everyone was racist and everyone was a homophobic all of the nonsense. The identity politics stuff it was all like it was all just like slamming me at once and i was waking up right and you've all been through this. I have no doubt that everyone watching this one way or another whether you've been a conservative for twenty years whether you're a liberal waking up now whether these terms mean nothing anymore and you're just some human trying to piece together something that makes sense. We all have our wakeup moments right and that moment with lower. Let's throw it back again. We're gonna show you the same clip again while i'm talking but it was just the you've all seen it. I know you've seen it. It's been seen thirty. Probably million times across all the different youtube and everywhere else and and he beat me with facts but did it with grace and decency and when the show ended. I know many of you know the story but we shook hands. We said we'll do the show again. I think he realized that he was sitting across from somebody that was willing to learn and willing to listen. And you know it was my best and worst career moment at the exact same time at the exact same time. Because i went into what turned into a debate. And i wasn't ready. I thought well if you just say. Systemic racism exists does. Because that's what the left does with everything. There should be fifteen dollars minimum wage because we think there should be. We should do this. America's evil because of their sixteen hundred parts of true. Because we say it's true. This is what the left does with absolutely everything. Larry had facts. Well this is what police shootings are. This is what affirmative action has done. This is what the ever expanding state has has done. to black and brown communities etcetera etcetera wasn't not that whole interview was just about that stuff but i went back into that control room and there were a bunch of producers there when we were in order. Tv we had a bigger staff at the time and that interview do not air live. We taped it live and then it was gonna hear the next day and everybody. Everyone in that room said dave. Don't worry we're gonna cut that part. We're going to cut that part. And i don't know where it came from within me but i said no we're not gonna if i'm an interview or if anything that i do is true and real. Well i get it. I get it. I don't look so great right there but we have to air that as and that's what we did and you know the next day or two or three as the video started getting copied and then it was like know black conservative destroys lib tarred and like all the other versions of that that cut across youtube and i started seeing millions of us and i was like. Oh you know this is not my best moment. But i started looking in the comments and people were going boy. Dave seems like he listened..

"That's just the truth. It got emboldened and board only does what all of that garbage stuff does when it's emboldened probably some bad stuff but what sits next to that for me is that i feel like i. I personally did. What i felt was right. And there's value in that so it's not you don't win all the time you don't and especially in politics you don't win and you know i say to you guys all the time that one of the biggest problems that we have in america right now is that people have traded religion or belief just any sort of traditional set of beliefs for politics right. And i think there's a particularly pernicious version of this with people on the left because they've so accepted the purely secular world view that they feel like because they don't believe in something else they believe that they have the duty or the responsibility or the divine right even though they usually don't believe in the divine to organize the world as they see fit and in many ways. That's really what this election was about. Like a guy like avenue some who thinks he should wield power over people and if you just gave him enough money and power he could figure out how more people could live or should live and versus the ideas. That larryelder was bringing to the table. The things that i talked about. Which are the government's really not that good at a lot of stuff and it shouldn't take from a lot of people. It shouldn't do that much. There's some basic stuff that you do and that's it but those ideas didn't work this time around and yes maybe there was some fraud and we all know that if you i mean blake masters who's running for senate in arizona who i think is really good guy who i'm going to have on the show in a couple of weeks he. He tweeted out an image. Where if you just take a basic iphone Flashlight to a ballot. You can automatically see the yes. And the boat. For larry i. We checked it no matter which way you folded the envelope. Even though i voted in person it on on our mail about it no matter which way you folded it either you can see the yes or you could see larry. I'm not saying there was fraud. I'm actually not even though i think the system here is deeply corrupt. Like i don't i. I'm not saying there's fraud and i have no evidence. There was but i know that the system here is just broken. It is a one party system and lord only knows what these people do. But i'm not. I'm not going down that rabbit hole But what i'm saying. Is that if a certain amount of people don't have faith in the system. And that's what i'm hearing from a lot of people you know. I went to a election night party last night at pineapple. Hill saloon. You may remember pineapple hill. There was the incredible viral video from the height of the lockdowns. Where the woman who owns it. Angelo's great great lady She was there last. Night obviously She had taken some video where she built this outdoor area for people to come and sit so that she could keep the restaurant open at the height of lockdowns and they locked her down but then they had a huge outdoor eating area for a hollywood shoot or literally steps away right next door that video got millions and millions and millions of time so we thought that that would be the place to do our little election situation last night and you know about one hundred people showed up. Maybe more and it was these. Were all good people. I didn't meet any racists or right wing maniacs. i didn't meet any bad people you know like by the way i'm not even sure..

I don't feel like doing any other current events We've got a little video that we're going to throw to as i'm talking But there's going to be a little different today because obviously today is not a great day if you're a californian and it's not a great day if you're an american and it's not a great day if you're just a decent freedom loving person right. It's just not a great day so that's number one so i'm not going to sit here and pretend that like the greatest mood ever or that. I think everything's great. And i'm not going to promise you that things will get better because i can't promise you that like i just can't However i i wanna say something just about my experience in this whole recall election. And what's happened to this country and the state and the last year and a half and everything else you know. I woke up this morning. And although i sorta like at first i was just like what am i going to do on the show. What am i gonna do. I gotta tell you that in the four five hours. I got up at about seven. Am the four or five hours. That i've been awake. I'm actually feeling quite proud today. Like i really do feel that in the last year and a half. I have fought for what i believe in at the highest possible level. I have done everything that i could possibly do to make. This recall happen To get rid of a guy that i think is really terrible governor who is destroying the state and. I don't have to repeat all the reasons why i think he is. You guys all know that But more importantly than that when when larryelder got involved in this thing and there were rumblings you know there were rumblings that maybe dennis prager was going to get involved There were rumblings at adam..

"And so we're really working hard to make that case and we've joined in coalition with neva california. Which is a national independent venues association. That is a new organization that kind of came together in this last year of independent venues both for profit and non profits mom and pop shops. Who have been shut down for fourteen months without an ability to earn revenue and the california association of museums and the three of our organizations with california arts advocates have been promoting a billion dollar budget. Ask and within that. There's money for all three aspects of the organizations and people that we represent and we're now real excited because we have five legislative champions pushing this through and bringing this to the attention of leadership we've directly met with the governor's office and we're talking about why this is so critical and we're getting really great. Response june fifteenth when the budget has to be passed here in the state of california. The governor announced it in his may revise some specific things for the arts. He talked about the arts in his budget. Speech which was fantastic to be heard and recognized in that way but we still feel like there's more that needs to be addressed in terms of what was not in that budget so we continue to push for that more hopeful and we ask people who are supportive of the investment to recover the sector and to bill back sustainability and to build equity into this sector to support us in our billion dollar ass. So that's the budget as you mentioned in the end if you want me to quickly talk about a couple pieces of specific legislation and policy that we're working on please do. I mean i noticed. for example on newsome's bump up in may he bumped up the artis core for example the california creative core pilot program was something that the governor introduced in his january budget and it was about fifteen million dollars now in his may revise he has bumped that up to sixty million an expanded the scope of the services that artists would be hired to do so it would be arts in utilizing artists.

"Your host. This episode is part of our series exploring covid nineteen impact on nonprofits and small businesses in the san francisco bay area back in april of twenty twenty when we decided to create this ongoing series on covid nineteen impact i or nonprofits and then on small businesses in the san francisco bay area. We like you had no idea how long the pandemic would go on. And what. The health and economic impact would be in our community with vaccinations increasing in nineteen cases and deaths decreasing. We're now moving into the summer of twenty twenty one with the reopening of the economy and all of the uncertainty of ever changing indoor and outdoor vaccinated and unvaccinated protocols and politics. That will drive how we all come back together as a unified or fractured community. We will continue to shine a spotlight on the nonprofits and small businesses that make up the fabric of our community along with the founders and staff who are struggling to deal with the impact of the covid nineteen pandemic on their operations services is sustainability until we can all get to the other side of the pandemic along the way we will also share with you all the amazing solutions that are nonprofits. Small businesses foundations and government leaders are working on to help us all get to the other side of the pandemic and come together to rebuild our communities with more economic social and environmental quality. Get some surveys. That really helped to build our case making the impact of what kobe did. We release that with otis report that they do annually on that creative economy and one of the things that showed was that many people were considering leaving the industry and we ended up getting quoted in the new york times. About how if we do not address this potential deficit in this pipeline of creation of new workers. We could be facing a cultural depression in california. And that's part of where i think. Things like the california creative workforce act and this level of investment is so critical for us to really emerge and be that state of creativity. This is the executive director of californians for the arts. Julie baker julia shirts with us. How the covid. Nineteen pandemic is impacting our creative economy and its workforce as well as how californians for the arts is working with arts organizations and the state government to support the recovery of the creative konami. I'm joined remotely by the executive director of californians for the arts julie baker. Thanks for being here julie. Thanks george it's a pleasure to be here. So i think it would be really helpful for the audience if you could provide an overview of what is californians for the arts. And what are your programs my pleasure. So californians through the arts is the statewide our culture and creative industries advocacy organization. And so we worked to increase awareness of the impact of this industry.
