Harvard, MIT sue to block ICE rule on international students that would prevent many from staying in the US

"Government being sued by Harvard and M I T so far over the ice policy. It's a new policy from ice foreign students here in America on education visas. Well, those visa's no longer valid if the school they're attending is going online this fall. Under current rules, international students aren't allowed to take online courses. But those rules were lifted for spring and summer of this year, the result of the Corona virus, so I could have chosen to continue extending that same policy through to the fall semester, Ehrenreich and Melnick with the American immigration counsel, some students would be allowed to remain if they took what they're calling a hybrid model here of online and in person classes. Universities himself hasn't haven't all decided what they're going to do this fall. Any foreign students pay a premium to attend Southern California universities like USC

Thoughts on Dealing With COVID-19 from Doug Petrick Upper St Clair HS track & XC coach

"Welcome back to another episode of the moving to live podcast and also the fit lad. Pge podcast listeners. Know if you've listened to us before sometimes we cross pollinate or interview. Somebody who makes a great guests for both fit lab? Pga In moving to live. Both of our podcasts. Have Ethos movement is a lifestyle not just an activity fill out. Pittsburgh tries to highlight people who do great movement things in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area moving to live tries to break down knowledge silos. And I think today's guest is well suited for both podcasts. Were in the middle of starting week. Five about halfway through week. Five of the Pittsburgh area. Essentially being in social distancing schools are not in session other than virtually and people across the world probably are very aware. It's very similar in various places. Today's guest is Doug Patrick. He is a cross country track and field coach. Upper Saint Clair high school which is a suburb of Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania is also a physics professor. I think from what I've seen is probably the person that I have seen. Who Uses twitter to the best effect of anybody else? As soon as we're done with this I need to find out more twitter. Twitter twitter tips from him. But I think if anybody can talk about the effect that it's had on a career on athletes these coaching and also he somebody who organizes a yearly cross country conference for high school coaches across Pennsylvania and in some cases in other states that he's been I won't say forced but he's had the opportunity over the past couple of weeks to realize this is not going to happen face to face. This is actually going to happen on zoom so doug thanks for taking time to talk to a fit lab. Pittsburgh in moving to live all. Thank some real excited. Kinda talk in connecting share a little bit about what we do like the first thing. That's very interesting to go over because I find it fascinating. I actually have a podcast that came out today where recording today with the physician who is in Italy who has been in quarantine for over four weeks. When did you first find out that your job is a physics teacher and as a cross country coach at Upper Saint Clair that you weren't going to be going into work early morning every day So I WANNA say probably March eleventh was when all this like hit in terms of at the high school and I know earlier that week At students asking. Hey what's going on or we heard. Were not going to be here next week. But I believe the date might the eleventh and our administration had hit said you know the following week we would not in school and I think at that point. It was just sort of a suspension through the middle of April So that being said you know. Uh Sports deathly weren't going to be happening During the suspension academics weren't GonNa be happening and like I wanna tip my hat to the administration at Upper Saint Clair School. Because they were very proactive about like thinking in having a plan in place in not rushing to hurry up and do something to fill time In I had a feeling that we weren't going to go back to distance learning illness after the last three weeks But until we got the official word It are like department meeting which was virtual that you know. We're not going back into the building and you know the state for athletics and activities. Said we're we're down without as well. I don't Wanna Seattle's in disbelief but I just didn't process it. It didn't seem that real so until I think it was like last Thursday That's when we got the official word and you and I were chatting prior to starting recording. I think I mentioned to you that I I started to take it seriously. Maybe four or five days before that and March tenth or eleventh was what I shut everything down to. I'm fortunate in that my real job is I teach online for California University of Pennsylvania so my job per se hasn't changed that much but I'm curious prior to that March eleven. Say a week before that or two weeks before that where was the thought process or was there a thought process about Cova nineteen in the upper Saint Clair School district as far as you as a teacher also as a track coach where you're traveling all over western Pennsylvania. Yeah so I guess we go back to the end of February. We're still in our indoor track and field season. So we're actually Penn state. We had ugly. Three athletes go to the state in so it was the NFL. Or wasn't I don't want to say it wasn't hitting United States but it was something wasn't in the public train were in any of the media and it. Maybe I was naive but I didn't know how it would impact us or if it was going to impact us so I can only speak for myself just in terms of when it. I hate you know that week of the eleventh before the eleven at the beginning of March I would see things come up on on the news. You're in my twitter feed and really. I didn't know the magnitude of what it was in Seoul. The fallen wake you know we weren't school in All the information that kept coming for Nats I just I didn't have a lot of information about the beginning so I didn't anticipate the magnitude. It was GonNa have on everything in everyone's like how long after they March eleventh again just for people who are listening and I know it differs from state to state. Were you aware that the track season was not going to continue score to cease to exist from that point forward. Yes we two leaks in. That was in the sacking leak and the way and the WPA out kind of like two weeks mention of nothing ends. You know on the way home when I got home. Phone's blowing up and local coaches on texting on their taxi. May and I guess different districts were handling it differently summer just doing exactly what the POW said. Some were doing more than what they had said. by I don't WanNA say wasn disbelief but it's sort of as more time went on initially thought we would go back. Maybe we'll just have a district championship or they would modify St Ann's probably about a week and a half ago. I just thought my mocked. It seems like this is just not going to happen. part of that. Is You know a lot. The kids that we have the in college I mean their seasons were cancelled at the beginning of March in. I was thinking you know if college is GONNA CANCEL NOT SEASON. It would make sense to me that a high school. Oscar Cheese Whiz go on. I'm curious I know you have a number of athletes. Go on and run in college. What effect do you think that? This is going to have on high school seniors now as far as getting recruited or getting if they're good enough getting scholarship money to go to college is the fact that they are not going to be able to run their senior year. Run Times they're potentially or PR's right no. It's it's going to impact a lot of kids. I would almost even say kids. That are juniors in terms of if they're track athletes usually their junior year weather guy or girl those the Times that the colleges used the rhythm their junior in spring track. So yeah there are GonNa be at a disadvantage. I'm some seniors. We have that are. GonNa run in college. They were in the process of sort of on being proactive prior to that of visiting schools reaching out schools figuring out if know running is GonNa work in their future with academic so seniors are missing their senior season But I almost want to say maybe juniors. They're going to be track athletes. They're you know they're they will have no times at all. Naturally with colleges. College coaches look at in terms of recruiting.

Morey J. Kolber PT PhD CSCS- Covid-19 as a Physical Therapist

"So maury. I know that you've had a big change in your main job right now. Which is teaching physical therapy students at Nova southeastern and I'm curious before all this came down. How much teaching of physical therapy students Nova southeastern was done in the online environment versus what we think of as the typical face to face environment of education all our program at Nova Southeastern University in Fort. Lauderdale campus is traditional teaching. So it is a face to face program. An each faculty sort of had a different way of approaching their courses. Some faculty had a mix of online prerecorded lectures in class laboratory. Others were one hundred percent in class. I I think it was somewhat variable but prior to all of this era traditional program. We have lecture class as we have lab classes. We have testing so the landscape of what we do. Moving forward is already changed. And it's GonNa continue to change and I know we were talking a little bit before I started recording. And you said that you had some impetus essentially a month ago that there may be some changes or to be prepared for some changes. And what was your initial thoughts when you heard that? Potentially you might be teaching courses in physical therapy program entirely online. I mean my initial reaction was panic because everything I do everything I've had setup is face to face that's the part of my job that I enjoy the most I think for some people. They probably saw a great thing for me. It certainly wasn't but there were some initial panic. Probably the first thing I did is stopped. All clinical visits adapt might have for various reasons one being the the threat obviously of Kobe. But the other was knowing that I needed to begin dedicating some hard time into creating modules and a change in my course which is currently ongoing. And I know you've been teaching for a number of years although courses changes knowledge changes and you try new things. How much of an increase in workload did you see or how difficult was to take some of these classes that until a month ago you were seeing students two or three times a week and now suddenly you're like okay? This all has to be delivered online in a synchronous or a synchronous manner right. It seems that something that would take five minutes in the classroom setting. We'll take fifteen minutes on his accession. Astrom said I'm sorry and I'm curious with the students that you've communicated with so far health familiar with most Zoom in online education versus panicked similar. To what you had a couple of weeks ago I mean fortunately for us in what it seems. Our students are probably a little bit more savvy than than some of us in terms of online learning. When I went to Undergrad we didn't have online learning. I imagine most of them did to some degree. Fortunately for us our program director had began pushing us into into exam. Soft which is a means of testing getting rid of paper and it wasn't because of this. This was last semester. So fortunately we transitioned into that software program to deliver our tests so we ready to go with that. Had We had to learn that at the same time it would have been a challenge in with that and the switch to online education with the students. What is the reaction of the students that you've talked with been so far? They've been excited about it. Just happy that they continue it or kind of a little bit of panic. Because it's something new. I think there's a little bit of panic with regard to testing because now they're they're being tested in an environment that they have to create that his private secure. There's a camera watching them. So that's changed. The ability to review exams is obviously changed due to security. You don't want exposure questions whereas when you have a setting where student comes your office you hand them a written exam they take a look at it. There's no exposure of that exam so now there's different considerations that didn't exist before you know. I'm always reluctant to to approach students. Say Hey how did you like the lecture? I just did on zoom because I think when you do that you know your you know your responses are going to say why I really liked it. I don't know that it's appropriate. I'm not big on just walking up approaching the students say hey. How did you like what I just did? Because students are generally kind been. We'll we'll say they liked it but that doesn't necessarily mean they did. I feel like our students have an expectation to in classroom teaching and laboratory sessions Expectations GonNA possibly need to change. Perhaps through the whole summer and I know I've been teaching for a number years at California University of Pennsylvania. Not In a physical therapy program but in exercise science program in our classes are a synchronous in other words we do narrated lectures and things like that where the students have a time period where they have to complete it with Sudan. Switch that you've had with your teaching. Are you doing this in a synchronous manner or their specific classroom times where students that you saw month ago in the classroom you our meeting with them on Zoom? So plan is moving forward to have both a synchronous synchronous so the plan will be for the summer. We were just wrapping up our semester. So there wasn't a lot of content but it was mix tasing fairness and synchronous moving forward into the summer. The students will be given a certain amount of time to do a review of a lecture. That's a synchronous. And then when they complete that then there will be a zoom session. Which will be synchronous where it'll be more focusing on cases questions and reviewing the content that they did earlier we have a media platform called counter. And that's what we use for our courses to prerecord certain lectures and I think from an efficiency perspective for them and us that's going to be strategy provide these cal- Torah lectures for the heart lecturing. Because if you think about it these students are going to be sitting in a zoom session. Three hours in the morning three hours at the end of the day it is going to wear on providing a synchronous cultural lecture. That's prerecorded and following up with a review. Overview zoom is going to be the way to go and I'm also interested in learning As physical therapy program. I know the American Physical Therapy Association has certain requirements. That students must meet. How communicated have been with you and with your program as far as recognizing that okay. This is something that really hasn't been done before we haven't had a pandemic and almost one hundred years so this is a significant change. What is their communication been with? You will our director and share. Have sort of been on the front line in terms of communicating with captain which is our accreditation body and at first there was this fear in debt. Changing our curriculum is a substantial change. It's GONNA require an application forms paperwork but Kathy did come down with some some documents stating that. There would be some flexibility based on this situation and with both changing models of classroom teaching as well as clinical hours and I suspect the most important thing about that is that when students finish their work at Nova southeastern. They'll have the ability to sit for the certification

"For this California legislators voted to require schools in the state to allow their athletes to earn endorsement money setting up a collision with the NC a a which bands compensation for college athletes beyond a scholarship in a modest stipend they're threatening to ban California athletes from all competitions the California State Senate nearing the end of the legislative session in Sacramento passed a bill by a vote of thirty nine nothing that allows college athletes to earn money from their name image or likeness to sponsorship or endorsement deals starting in twenty twenty three okay that's all well and good but it gets worse it also bans schools from preventing athletes from getting compensation or retaining agents. so I'm gonna be playing football for Berkeley I'm only playing football for S. "Work with and go to school with madrid rubric you know what i'm saying like yeah confess me again it so we have a millennial job interview we want to play for a just a moment okay we want to to get to that so stick around because it's it's it's going to be the best two and a half minutes of your day or maybe the worst i don't know how would you look at this sherry producer the program best or worst because he cut it it's it's hilarious yeah you'll you'll be entertained for sir okay and there's a lot of truth there okay we'll get to that just what we are also talking about colleges a college it in my estimation of college education is sometimes overrated for certain people you don't even need college but what really disappoints me is that only thirty percent of the ninth graders in the state of california will gradually college only thirty percent and then we'll really gets me is the fact that in this state where one of three states that only requires two years of math were one of two states john requires three years of english we have a tremendous problem it comes to english math those are necessary requirements to be eligible to get into a california public university of school for cobb are most kids still qualify to get into those schools so what's the problem here what's the problem we had a caller in the last ira well a lot of it has parental involvement i get that i totally get that jerry you're very evolved with your couch and their expectations and you're going to make sure they do the thing but what about the family where the parents don't care or there really are there really know adults minding the children so to speak you don't have sanya veterans that those kids read a disadvantage if they're not being heard then pushed in that direction a might not succeed so then it goes to what denzel washington had to say of course you know he's the guy just great actor he's got a new film coming out he's being interviewed about the new film and he says listen if a father is not in the home the boy will find a father in the streets if the streets raise you than the judge because your mother and prison becomes your home it starts with how your way to your children if young man doesn't have.
