He's also a just crazy crazy baseball fan. I wish I had been able to record for you a conversation that he had with Tim Kurkjian, where they just totally geeked out like 28 year olds over baseball cards like just I couldn't believe what I was hearing two adults talking about baseball like they were kid people who were in the baseball cards. They take that very, very no, but I'm saying they were talking like they were kids talking about. Baseball cards. They weren't talking about baseball cards. I misspoke, but thank you, Mike for being on with us, And can you explain to us just how you feel about everything going on with the Chicago White Sox and Tony LaRussa? Sure, Yeah, I mean, look, you all have talked about this. Everybody was a baseball fan knows this. Baseball is a huge problem. The age of the average baseball fan is Increasing every year. We're losing market share to other sports, and I applaud the White Sox because I think they found the perfect answer how to recapture the attention of America's youth, and that's higher 76 year old Tony LaRussa run their baseball team. I don't know. I lost my mind about this. I don't know why I don't care about the White Sox. I'm not a White Sox fan. But I just lost my mind when they did this because Look there. Let's name the problems that potential problems with this number one. He's 76 years old 76 good enough to run the country good enough to run the White Sox Mike bearing up. Yeah, that would put in between the two presidential candidates, I guess in a judge, but he hasn't managed in 10 years. The last year he managed with 2011. He left his job in part because he got to do you Why? He got a second, do you? Why? This year? In fact, the charges were filed the days for the White Sox hired him. They beat the details of that to you Live by the way are incredible. If you haven't read them, your boy, Jeff Passan wrote a piece about it in ESPN. And he was pulled over by a cop. The cops said. Where were you tonight? And he said that he had been having dinner with friends from the California Angels baseball team. They haven't been called the California Angels in 1997 e don't know what and then he can wear and take a Breathalyzer. He said. They cost they were gonna take a Breathalyzer and he was like, I don't trust those things. He blew a 0.9, which is above the legal limit, and he was like, Yeah. I don't trust those things. Sorry. They later did a blood test and Test came out his 0.95. So I guess at that point, maybe he trusted the Breathalyzer. I don't know, but the biggest problem is He Hey, came out in support famously in 2010 of a bill in Arizona that essentially allowed cops in Arizona to pull over Latino and Latina people without cause. Just check their papers. And potentially deport them. He came out in favor of that. And, like seven of the best players on the White Sox are Latino like it's Yoan Moncada and a lawyer, Mendez and Louise, Robert and Jose Brady. You like The entire team is young and Hispanic and now their coaches, a 76 year old guy who thinks that the California Angels they're still in the league and who has openly called for them and their brother in to be deported, so, but other than that, I think it's a great move. I think he's exactly the right guy to run the team. You didn't even mention that they have a black bat flipper on their team. Yeah, that's the other thing. He's a very old school. Play the game the right way. Lift your pinky finger off of the teacup is you sipped delicately from it in the and And observe the unwritten rule is kind of a guy and their most exciting and most fun players. Tim Henderson, who likes flipping is that when he hits home runs, and the fans like it when he does that And I look forward to him suspending Tim Anderson for 11 games after he beats the Yankees and walk off in early April. My God, so I'll remind you they made the playoffs this year without Larisa. Yes, that's the thing that's the other thing. They're incredibly good team. They're really good, and they're young and fun. Need. Lucas. Giulio was one of them was a legit ace, like they're a legitimate contender, and we're already a legitimate contender..

I was gonna help our dodger rider cover the National League championship series between the Phillies and the dodgers before that final out was even recorded Anaheim stadium. I had a phone call from sports editor he suggested that my way to Philadelphia I would be wise to go through Boston. He wanted me to cover game one sixty three between the Red Sox in the eighties. You have to understand head of special interest for Long Beach, California where I work. Bob, lemon was a Long Beach native the set of the man that own pop limits gestation and hid take a Yankees over in midseason and taking them on one of the most oppressive second half rebounds in major league history. Think about this mid July. The eighties are in third place in the American League east fourteen games by the first place Red Sox with limited sharks. The Yankees were fifty three and twenty one the rest of the regular season the Red Sox. Meanwhile, we're struggling and that set up the first American tiebreaker game since India's knocked off you guessed it, the Red Sox nineteen forty eight. So I climbed out of Boston showed up fit way park just in time to store my suitcase in Bob women's office and got to enjoy one of the most dramatic moments in baseball history. The Red Sox rolled into this seventh inning leading behind. Mike, taurus. But with one out in to base up step Bucky dent was over to the strikeout against Torres that after noon and really wasn't much of a hitter. But the they didn't have much choice. They only had one other player left on the bench, Fred Stanley. And he was being held back to hit for the pitcher after taking ball. One did off is left foot. And then with the Red Sox faithful prime to celebrate not just to win but a win against the rival Yankees debt lost it a ball into the netting above the green muster in left field at Fenway park. Ignited the Yankees to a five to four victory that opened the door for them to beat the dodgers for the world championship for the second year in a row never has sold out stadium been so silent. Remember this game was played I less than twenty four hours notice Yankee fans didn't have much of a chance to buy a ticket. Let's let's get to Boston. Still a Steve Palermo was a New England native. Here's a rookie umpire that day. Was hailing third base. He was the one who signal the ball hit by dent to be fair, which was a no brainer. But not to Palermo's father, his mom and dad were both at the game employer. Moore wrote home with him afterwards. Palermo was later recall. My dad didn't say a word for at least, thirty minutes, finally classes at me any editors could have called the foul. I said dad, it wasn't even close. How could I call? It file with the stairs, father explained. It was in Boston. You're from New England. You could've called it fair. It'll there was some angst in New England. The next day Boston Globe. Call in this Ray. Fitzgerald began his column with quote hit me hit me again. I'm a Boston sports fan. I can take. Yeah. Tracy ringer, be good stuff. And I didn't know until recently Tracy was actually at that ballgame member that watching that game and seeing that home run hit by Bucky dent. Thank you Tracy wrinkles. Tuesdays with Tracy. "And you know i didn't make one comment that night but i watched it with the thought in my head that you know for the first time your understanding what are struggle our battle our fight aren't lawsuit you know is about and i will tell you that policy lasted one night the next season lisa saxon came on the scene as a sports reporter with the la daily news though in those days she was writing under her maiden name niyaz the day i arrived to work this was just the telltale sign for me my very first day i arrived to my desk and they had made a sign for me and it said token female that moment inspired lisa to work even harder she meticulously kept track of every single stat and even though her salary was peanuts compared with the guys she put in longer hours than anyone so fast forward to 1982 melissa had moved on to covering other sports and lisa now had the california angels beat the angels manager was gene mock i stock my hand out i said hygiene lease the knee us it's nice to me i'm going to be with the temperature of the season he let my hand to hang in the air he crossed his arms and he said you can come into my locker room but if you come into my office i'm not talking to anyone hit turn on his heels and ran behind second base to watch batting practice at i waved anyone is it hygiene nice to meet you too and jeanmarc made good on his what promise threat if lisa tried to come into his office for post team interviews he wouldn't let anyone in so i used to have to wait outside the manager's office because of protocol after the game his first you talk to the manager than you talked to the players that left me in the locker room alone with the players and that's no small thing even though melissa lucky lawsuit let women reporters inside the lack room it couldn't control what happened once they got there.
