"The application might not be what's best for getting information about who's sick, where they going and what interventions could be possibly due to reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality in our society. So yes, I think a validation study is incredibly important. We are in the process of trying to figure out the best way to do something like that. But I think that there is this larger issue of what incentives do these companies ever have to actually share this data back to provide it in a format that's useful to do any of this extra work when that isn't in any way regulated or that it isn't in any way something that they're required to do. Tomorrow, every single provider that we work with could easily pull up the stakes, take all this information away. And there's not really any recourse for us as investigators to get to that data again. Yeah, it's a little kind of scary in a way that a service could disappear that might be contributing to smart public health decisions, but at the same time I know people still have Cambridge Analytica in their mind, sort of like the negative case. Do you have to fight that experience or do you think the public is becoming conscious of the importance of this data for public research and things along these lines? It's one story out of probably a few hundred of things that have happened of access that shouldn't have occurred. As a user of a lot of these services and then as a researcher who looks at the back end and tries to see what we can actually learn from this, there is still that sort of large nebulous space where all of these data are already being used for commercial purposes. I think people would point at something like hybrid Analytica and say, this is terrible and I would certainly agree. But I wonder how they would feel about their data being used to target more advertisements to them. Or do any of these other hundred things that are being done with their data already, that is not for any sort of public or for social good. I think we've matured a lot since Cambridge Analytica, access to these data sources and the layers of privacy that are built on top of them are increasing quite a bit. And in fact, one of the pieces of research that we've been conducting recently deals with differential privacy. So basically, we are trying to look and determine and say, okay, so we have this dataset of mobility data coming in. What if we implemented a layer on top of differential privacy, which provides us a statistically defensible mechanism through which we can guarantee a certain level of anonymity for an individual in our dataset. And so if we apply that layer on top and we tweak how much noise we're adding to the dataset, because at the end of the day, that is a lot of a differential privacy it does. It adds noise so that it becomes really difficult to say that this is the one person or this is the one type of trip or this is an individual that we can target. You can't really add more information to that to be able to identify some individual in your dataset. We tune how much of that noise we're adding. And then on the other end, we use those datasets with noise added in a simulation model and determine how long it takes, how much noise we have to add before we start biasing our results quite heavily. So for example, the result of a model might be this is our expectation of synchronicity between epidemics and different regions in New York State if an epidemic started in New York City or it might be this is the overall end size of the epidemic. So the number of individuals that are infected or the number of individuals that we would expect to be hospitalized, or any of these other values that we're interested in as a model. And as we tune this noise parameter, how much do those N values change from the quote unquote truth, which is no noise added. And what we're finding is this is, again, a very reasonable and very defensible way to add noise and protect anonymity. But you can add a quite a large amount of noise and still have very little bias in your end result. If what you're interested in is these large level population models. So this large level sort of how are people moving between regions and how does this affect the overall transmission dynamics of a given epidemic? And so this would be, for example, a really great framework that could be applied on top of almost all of these different types of data that we're talking about. The question is, what incentive do these providers have to actually do that and then to make this data a bit more available? And we'll continue to do this research to try to elucidate what this pathway looks like. But there's always going to be, I think, this more philosophical or governance question of what is the incentive for any of these providers to share the data, is there a duty to share, especially when there's a disaster when there's an emergency and what sort of funding structures or what sort of incentive exists now to allow the research to build that pipeline. And unfortunately, there might not be a purely commercial solution to all of this. Work and listeners learn more about crisis ready. So you can check out WWW dot crisis ready dot IO..

"Do get in touch comments and opinions always welcome at Bonn on Twitter or email vikin and Bloomberg .NET Last week you may remember we spoke with Helen Thompson author of disorder hard times in the 21st century The world economy is facing some pretty serious energy constraints at any point when there's any significant growth the world economy is now running into high energy prices This thesis that fossil fuel economics are a significant contributor to crises and political change is something David fickling has been writing about in relation to Pakistan in recent weeks He joins from Sydney Australia David Pakistan isn't crisis again It's finances are severely strained inflation is running above 13% and the rupee has lost a 5th of its value against the U.S. dollar in the last 12 months For these and definitely many other reasons prime minister Imran Khan was ousted a month ago and fresh IMF talks are necessary for Pakistan can extend yet another emergency loan program How did Pakistan arrive here again Absolutely I mean this is a fascinating example of the way energy economics plays into politics And this is not the first instance that we've seen In fact really through 50 years old of Pakistan's history We've seen essentially the same thing which is that every time the economy starts to grow quite rapidly growing economy needs more energy and Pakistan is energy poor It needs to import a lot of this energy particularly obviously petroleum And as that import demand goes up you end up with a balance of payments crisis and Pakistan goes to the IMF and it's heading to the IS again That underpins the removal of Imran Khan from office The next bailout will be I think the 19th since the early 70s So energy is an absolute constraint on Pakistan's growth rate and for years now Pakistan has recognized this and has been trying to find ways to get around it If you go back to the early 2010s when Nawaz Sharif was prime minister the tactic at that point was to build a lot of nuclear power plants and lignite coal plants That would provide a domestic power supply Pakistan historically its grid was powered largely by hydroelectricity from the Indus Valley and up in the Himalayas And then very substantially by fuel oil and natural gas which has increasingly been imported There has been a small amount of local natural gas but that's dwindling Imran Khan then came along and canceled some of those coal plants and focused very heavily on boosting hydroelectric output even further But it's clearly still not working because I think one of the fundamental problems here is that you have a growing household sector the household sector still wants to use a lot of this natural gas and oil for transport and domestic cooking and heating and that sort of thing And so the problem doesn't really go away and we're having yet another energy related balance of payments crisis The one thing that's not happening here that I think should be happening is to look at the new renewables that we're seeing everywhere else in the world This is a domestic source of energy It's a very cheap source of energy If you look just across the border from Pakistan province in Gujarat that area of India you see a lot of wind and solar expansion But Pakistan's only looking to target about sort of 10% of wind and solar in the grid by 2030 which by that point is really far too low And this is the cheapest source of energy to Pakistan But for reasons that aren't really very clear it's still not making its way into the grid Now to be clear these were obviously problems evident in Pakistan and other countries before the war but Russia's war on Ukraine has exacerbated the situation Tell us how where does Pakistan import its energy from Well it's largely as far as the oil and gas is concerned This is coming from the gulf from OPEC Of course if you look at on the map Pakistan is directly across from there But yes the importance of the Russia situation here is that that pushes up the global cost of petroleum And so even though Pakistan is not importing anything from Russia of any great scale the cost of its imports go up Volume doesn't go up but the cost goes up and that means that the pain itself in the current account and that ultimately leads into the balance of payments and that causes pressure on the currency and a visit to the IMF And of course we're seeing this in so many different countries at the moment are they all experiencing the same thing for the same reasons So for example Sri Lanka another country experiencing runaway inflation it's also getting relief soon it hopes from the IMF We have Nigeria's national energy grid collapsing We have protests in Peru partially because of energy and inflation are the same reasons underpinning all of these political crises I think of a bit more diverse than that because of course you have a range of different economies in relation to energy of course Nigeria you mentioned is a substantial exporter of energy one of the world's bigger oil exporters The issues of Nigeria is greater and much more to do with the general sort of dysfunction of Nigerian government there But of course energy is a global market Food is a global market and food is related to the energy market of course producing food requires a lot of fertilizer fertilizer is likely made from natural gas and just producing fertilizer in general is an energy intensive process So these are sort of cascading situations that ultimately come back to the fact that the world's demand for energy is rising faster than the world's supply of energy And that's being felt very intensely in the bit of the energy complex which is most easy to flex and adjust which is the fuel market the fuel market can move energy globally If I have a wind farm here in Australia I can not sell that electricity to the U.S. But if I have an oil field in Australia I can sell that oil to the earth So the fuel market has traditionally been the way that the world's energy system balances out And that's where we're feeling the pressure right now So David how realistic is Pakistan's plan to lower imported energy It's trying to increase hydroelectric power to 50% of the mix as opposed to a third of the mix by 2030 Would that entail even more investment from China which obviously carries its own risks Everything that's driven the past decade of Pakistan's energy policy has related a lot to the fact that Pakistan is the biggest recipient of Chinese belt and road funding And from a Nauru Sharif air when it was building a lot of this lignite coal plants to the Imran Khan era which is focused more on major down building project It's a lot of Chinese capital and Chinese expertise that is driving that I would argue that the dependence on hydroelectricity is too great for a large country in Pakistan you need diverse sources of energy We see this in the examples of China and Brazil actually in the past year They've both had problems of drought that has reduced the supply of hydroelectricity as the supply of hydroxy goes down You need to go to other sources of energy We know that the problem of course with Pakistan is that it can't afford all this imported energy that it's dependent on If that becomes contingent on drought on the state of the monsoon on the state of the snow melt.

Calif. Assemblyman Kevin Kiley Is Valiantly Fighting to Kill AB 2223
"Let's get to someone who is a fighter for what is good and beautiful in California because there's still a lot of great people in California and the fight is necessary to assemblyman Kevin kiley, who's also a candidate for California's third congressional district, Kevin. Welcome to the Charlie kirchhoff. Thanks, Charlie. It's great to be with you. So Kevin, let's get into the latest news. I was kind of tracking this through some of our amazing pastors yesterday, pastor Jurgen, pastor Jack hibbs, rob McCoy, James Cadiz. We're kind of all in a text together of people that were tracking the legislative movement behind AB two two two three, otherwise known as the infanticide Bill. Walk us through what this bill actually contains no hyperbole or exaggeration because some people are blowing it out of proportion, not on our side. The other side, what does it actually say and where does it stand in legislative process? Sure, well, where it stands is it passed its second committee yesterday, which is horrifying. It's one of the worst bills that's ever been introduced here, which is really saying a lot, considering the sort of bills that get introduced in past in California. And the idea is, you know, Gavin Newsom has proclaimed California and abortion sanctuary state. He wants this to be the state where people from other states can come to to have abortions and this bill two two two three purportedly creates a kind of liability shield for acts that would violate the laws of other state and some places of limits on what sorts of things can be investigated. And so all of that is bad enough in its own right, but there is this term in the Bill perinatal, which by, you know, there was a practicing o-b-gyn at the hearing yesterday who said that that can encompass up to about a month after birth. And so it creates sort of a liability shield for an infant death that is post birth and what's more, it actually would give individuals the ability to sue prosecutors who wanted to come in and bring charges of these cases. So it's truly a horrifying

"Your business today by visiting QuickBooks dot com. Okay, California rules meant to protect outdoor workers from the dangers of wildfire smoke or almost never enforced. That's the finding of an investigation by KQED and the California newsroom collaborative. Farida farida, job the farida job Romero reports apologies. Breathing wildfire smoke can lead to serious health problems like worsening asthma and heart failure. So when there's unhealthy levels of wildfire smoke, California employers are required to reduce exposure, such as by moving workers and doors or providing N95 masks. But in Fresno, the state's top producing agricultural county, many farmworkers I spoke with, say, they've continued to work in heavy smoke with no protections. In a field by the highway, a man pulls dried grapevines from the soil. He's worked in U.S. agriculture for 15 years. I hand him a wrapped N95 mask and ask if his boss ever offered him one. No, at work they haven't given us masks at all, he says. We're not using his name because he says he fears retaliation from his employer. And like more than 40% of the state's ag workers, he's undocumented. An estimated 4 million people work outdoors in California. Over the last two years, the rules went in place, the state has faced the worst wildfire seasons on record, but the agency tasked with protecting workers safety, cited employers for violating the smoke rules just 11 times. The official who was in charge of enforcement at kalos, and just got a bigger job as had a federal osha. Senators will each have 5 minutes for a round of questions. Doing his Senate confirmation hearing this spring, Doug Parker told lawmakers a top priority is to enforce work safety laws. We also have to be able to deliver the goods once those workers have the trust in us to come forward. He declined to speak with KQED and director us to damn lucido who's now the acting chief of kalos Shah. We are a leader in providing worker protection, including against smoke. Do you really believe that there's only 11 violations of this law over two years? So first of all, we can only respond to complaints that are issued. And in all of the cases where we responded and found evidence of a violation, we issued a citation. Back in the field in Fresno, the worker says, he didn't know about the rule. So he couldn't complain about not getting the required protections. His employer never told him how to stay safe on smoky days, he says. And that's something the rules as employers must also do in a language workers understand. Can to act management employs workers in this field. We already sent over your email to our attorney. So he is the one that's going to be responding to it. Angie Garcia works at kentuck management. I contacted her after sending a request for comment. We provide everything necessary for them to use while they're working later the attorney told KQED the company is in compliance with the smoke safety rules. But the client to provide any evidence. What's really needed, advocates and state lawmakers say, are strike teams of Carlos and specters in the fields on smoky days. But a bill to do just that, died in the state legislature earlier this year, after governor Gavin Newsom's administration opposed it. For NPR news, I'm farida jabal Al Romero in Fresno..

Whatever call in earlier Lied to get on air and then just completely distorted some facts. So hopefully you guys will go in find john and ken. Sean is that on. Kfi john and ken kfi did an interview And i forget the Alexandra dot dot org. They did an interview with her. This is the woman. They claim that Larry elder put a wave. The are aimed gone editor in. And i mean just complete an utter complete and utter fabrication So that was take she was. She was made to look like a fool. Mona john and and ken show on. Kf eye in los angeles so anyway you guys can go search for that She was taking part in the interview. So just complete and utter hack job This was a lady that wanted to ride. Larry elder's hotel's apparently didn't work out well for her and so she decided to smear them in even took a little Money from what. I understand from political so this is a this is the atmosphere that we're in. This is that we can expect. We can expect caller seminar. Callers like the guy that called in earlier. He didn't want solutions to the problem. He just wanted to bash. He just wanted to bashar conservative. That's that's all. He was concerned about. But for those you want solutions. It's the lake. Dell dot com elect elder dot com elect elder Dot com but california is trying to rig. Do their best to rig This this election Hat tip forgotten man As a california governor recall election takes off efforts to sabotage the elder candidate candidacy in those who voted for the recall are in full force. There are already reports of efforts to steal the california governor election for gavin newsom. No one likes newsom. He was horrible. Over the past year. And instituting a draconian or instituting konia measures to inhibit freedom during the coby crisis. He is hated so the democrats have to cheat some more because these obviously hated by democrats. He's hated by independence. You guys know that. Over two million people signed the The the recall waivers or petitions And ultimately i believe it was one point seven that were validated But here's a couple of examples in the first example republican candidate. Larry elder is noticeably impacted. By the way the ballot was created and folds and added to the ballot This is basically a low tech attack of a ballot when folds run through Candidate boats space that either does not scan and forces and adjudication or outright. Missa lines in auto councils the vote the design of the ballot ballot they believe will negatively impact elder. Here's what i'm going to tell you to do if you have a caught supervisor of elections out here in florida. I'm assuming it's the same or similar in california. I know they want to try to keep things. Shut down. you know kovic hysteria. So that they make things easier for gavin newsom. But i would ask you to take the extra effort if you can to drive your ballot to a location where you can assure it's going to be county. I don't know if there's a system that exists in california where you can confirm that your vote has been counted that exist in the state of florida. They done a lot of things to tighten up our elections. If not that is something that you guys will want to work on with. The fixed california thing that rick grenell or has going on out there but that is this is something they're they're they're trying to do. The second hack effort mentioned by this article By gateway pundit is referred to as the postman. Hack this simple. Low level hack perpetrated on boaters is one of many ways. Vote can be stolen. This is just one of them. Think about it if if if ten thousand of these votes were stolen This is sometimes the narrower thin margin of nefarious you know actors or this is the margin that nefarious actors needs to win. The democrats will continue to cheat as long as they get away with it so it is time for americans in california's to stand up for freedom and justice and free and fair elections. So this is stuff. And i'm sure. Larry elder will be making the case and He needs to be vocal. You guys need to be vocal and not be discouraged. The way that you're gonna win still overwhelmed. The system in california they. They can't see you. I mean it's got to be so many you gotta flood the zone and to the best of your ability if you can get to a place where you can drop off that ballot safely insecurity i would do. I would do just that another opportunity that you have is ballot harvesting okay. The left invented fat. And and quite frankly you guys have a relatively efficient malines system you guys get. Everything counted on time for the most part in november But obviously these people are going to go for the gusto. Because i really do believe elder will win this race unless they get away with cheating. So it's up to you to overwhelm the system for the sake of freedom for the sake of justice for the sake of fair election so you can do another thing. Is larry elder. This hat tip national review is larry elder the latest victim of a high tech media.
