"What are we excited? We're excited for Panthers, Sabres on Tuesday, we're excited for flames, jets on Wednesday. Oh man, this week is so good. It's gonna be really good. This week is so good. That Wednesday game, I'm like hyped, like I can't wait. Now I'm doing like I'm doing some like a show meeting here, even though we're on air. So I'm curious for the scheduling. Do you know yet? Like the season ends on there's a makeup game and it's next Friday, right? Even though most teams wind up finishing by Thursday. Sure. I'm hoping that they're not going to start the playoffs on the weekend, right? Like they're going to start them on something. I think it's the 17th, which is like the sorry, I need to pull up. It's not going to start on the weekend, right? No, no, no. That would be a disaster. For me personally, 'cause I want to get some show previews out. The month of the week. Okay, that's good. I'm expecting the Monday. Yeah. Okay. I like it. Well, I'm looking forward to that. Anything else you're looking forward to before we sign off here? I think I'm excited to watch the crack in tomorrow. Yeah. I think I'm going to I think I'm going to jump on and cover some cracking games in the playoffs, which I'm excited for too. Well, you and I are going regardless of you covering them. We've decided, right? We're going to go, we're going to try to get a Mariners game in as well. We're going to watch a crack and we're going to watch it, 'cause I've yet to watch a game in that building. I've heard only great things. It's incredible. And you know what? One thing that I think is like an under told story of the kraken success, because sort of the inverse of the Calgary flames, they've been like one of the most opportunistic finishing teams, and when you look at the composition of that roster and look at what they prioritized adding over the course of the last 12 months in particular, I mean, McCann was already there, but burakovsky, raw shooting talent. Björk strand, raw shooting talent, and then waivers Eli tolvan, and then also Daniel sprung, right? I mean, they've really built this like one shot scoring machine that sort of offsets the fact that, you know, until veneers levels up, which is gonna happen, it just hasn't quite yet. They don't really have like an elite offensive engine instead they have all this finishing depth talent. I think it's made them a really unique matchup. And a really tough one for teams to handle all season long. It's been fun to watch and it'll be fun to watch them in the class. I'm looking forward to it. All right, Tom. I'm also looking forward to Vince Dunn and Adam Larson. I want to see them live. They didn't really good. Fantastic. I'm Vince Dunn's getting slept on as like a Norris dark horse. I do think having Larson with him though I was helped a lot after he bounced around with partners last year. For sure. But yeah, no, you're right. I still think he's the driver on that pair, though. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm with you on that. Let's listeners know where they can check you out. "His ability to like those are kind of broken place, especially in the neutral zone. You're going to see that in this series because like we just said, the rangers take those and flip the ice for a scoring chance, as well as anyone. And so his ability to sometimes take those when it's not a clean exit and still get it down the ice and retain possession and then set up a sequence is going to be massive. I haven't seen enough of him in New Jersey to have a really good answer for this because you know how laser focused I am on the Pacific. I've watched more Timo Meyer on the sharks this season than I have since he got traded. And I thought he was really unfocused. I'm focused. In San Jose. And I don't blame him. Like that's not something I hold against him. But there were some really ugly body language moments from him in San Jose has that been completely fixed. Yeah, completely fixed. He's had a couple of not ideal penalties he's taken. Part of that is like his playing style and also I think just like a bit of like overzealousness, new team like yourself all that. I'm not worried about I don't think that's like a sign of like being on Disney. And you just take that with good players like him. I wouldn't worry about that. I think that's like entirely situationally dependent and just speaks to what a disaster the sharks have been this season doesn't have anything to do with I think Meyer moving forward. So I wouldn't worry about that at all. I mean, think about him, right? Like he comes, he starts his NHL career on the shark team that has this like long playoff run where they're making the postseason every year and at least like some level of contender, right? And then

"It's like, yeah, okay. Yeah, no, definitely. I think she'll start against like athleticism, especially in this matchup, where the Devils create so many of these circumstances so special. It's very useful for them. But with this rangers team, the other thing to consider is there are two acquisitions Kane has a 42.7. On ice expected gold trip one 5 terrace ankle just under 42. But the thing for them is and this is what I keep going back to. For them to be effective and come out as an air positive, they can afford to get smashed in a lot of these categories if they're going to maximize their efficiency with terrace ankle shot as we saw him like go down the wing and beat Darcy Kemper with a wrist area yesterday. As we've seen Kane with his passing. But at some point you do like you take on enough water where it doesn't really matter if you're doing that. And once you're hovering around the 40s, that's where it becomes kind of like perilous. Well, this was my concern when they made those deals was do they have enough two way talent up front. It remains like, so I watched the kings two this week, and I saw the flames in the kings, both at Rogers arena and I'm watching this king's team that has no feel in the lineup, no Gabe villardi in the lineup and no Mikey Anderson. And corpus holo was great. And I'll leave that for woodley. Biggest fan? But especially with Mikey Anderson out of the lineup. Yeah. He feels a huge role for them. Like that is something they were so desperate for. And I'm watching this and you know, I know you were hoping that they would go bigger, but I'm sort of thinking like, I don't know that anyone did a better job. Yeah, the two for one was it worked out well. You can't tell me you can't tell me that the leafs wouldn't be better off if they'd made that trade. For example, just as like another team that could have benefited from making that deal. That to me is the team that may be upgraded themselves the most. The rangers and their deadline additions, it almost feels like retro rangers, where it's like, they got the big names, but maybe the impact of those guys isn't quite as big as it looks on the marquee anymore. Now, are you confirm or deny the rumors that you were there scouting, getting ready for covering them full time next season? No, I wasn't. It was at least it was at least partly in my stuff like 5 million in cash space. I'll start worrying about gavrikov when they trade like two guys. Yeah. You know? a bit because I think there's this kind of like idea that I've seen that it's a bit disappointing, right? He's got 6 goals, three assists in 16 games, hasn't I'd like the wow factor yet for an extended period of time. In this game in particular though, I thought you saw exactly why I was so excited about this for them because in a game where the checking became a bit tighter where the rangers are trying to be physical with them. Like Myers showed his unique ability to just put his head down and take the puck to the net and be like, just a bull and incredibly aggressive. And that's going to be awesome.

"And that would be a concern for me in that series where if the Devils get a bit carried away or a bit ahead of themselves and get too deep, the rangers regardless of what the shock clock says and how much they're getting like out chance and everything. Their ability to take that and all of a sudden just get a two on one out of nowhere is going to be something that's going to loom large I think in this series. And that's what's so fascinating because they want to beat you an entirely different ways. Is Luke Hughes going to be replacing Kevin ball? Well, can we all have been good for them? He has, but like, Luke Hughes is the best defenseman outside the NHL right now. And after the frozen four games, what, this weekend. Yeah. I mean, they might be getting another impact defenseman into that lineup. That's another X Factor that I don't think we can ignore. There's a chance that they're adding a super talented third pair guy. Yeah, like that time when they have just dropped kill my car into their playoff lineup and it's the flames. And everyone was like, oh my God. And it was like an atom bomb. Yeah. Yeah. They did it with goudreau too, a few years back, right? So no, I mean, I think there's a lot going on in that series, tactically, and I think you're right. I just really struggle with this rangers team because I'm curious to know how far I think their best two way forward is Barkley gaudreau. And he's gonna play on the fourth one. Wait, wait. No. Who is then? It's the Benjamin. Come on. I'm just saying, that's one thing in the regular season. Yeah. It's a different thing when you're talking ajo and he sure and well, you know, that level of competition in my mind anyway. Barkov maybe.

"Subscribe and download the show on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, we are back here in the hockey PDO cast. On this Monday afternoon, Thomas drench in studio with us, Tom, we talked about the flames and the Panthers. At the top, let's talk about two actually good teams. The Devils in the rangers, 'cause I'm really, you know, it seems like we've been headed for this collision course in round one between these two teams for a while there it looked like the Devils might actually steal the one seed and the metro from the hurricanes, but now the canes are up three points with a game in hand. With only a handful of games left it feels like we are going to get devil's rangers. They played last week and it was like a really fun I think informative experience I saw a lot of what I was really curious to see from both teams there. But you know they both made big moves a bit big acquisitions for forwards of the deadline and let's start this from the devil's perspective because they've had a bit of a tale of three seasons, right? They start out of the gate really hot like all of their underlying numbers were just preposterously good. They had a bit of a swoon even though they kept winning games through the middle of the year, Jack Hughes got hurt. And then now the past 2025 games, they've rebounded all of their numbers, look as good as they did at the start of the year. They're not scoring as much and they're goaltending, dipped a little bit, but they're looking dominant again from a possession perspective and underlying metrics perspective. So what do you want to talk about with this with this devil's team? What kind of interest to you the most with them? As we look ahead to their first real test of this magnitude in round one against a rangers team that made a run last year. So.

"And he was still right on Saturday. He's phenomenal. He's been awesome. Yeah. But what I'm saying is you're technically committed with this win now team, but if you looked at the market, how desirable would to fully with one year at 4.25 where everyone can squeeze that in at lindholm under 5 million at the time of under 5 million. But you're not selling for the sake of selling, you could conceivably get significant assets that you could then shift into different era of calorie claims hockey. But you do that. I think that stuff you can do like you're so pot committed with the deals that would be hard to move. You're saying you just wait till the deadline worst case? See what you got. Yeah. Especially if you've got it like, especially if it's a new GM who comes in. It's not like the value of those guys is going to diminish at mid season. They're actually even less expensive for anyone. Anyone can take them on. It's less expensive for you to eat half. Like you can significantly redesign this team in midstream if that's what you want to do or they're good and you decide what pieces you want to keep and what you're willing to jettison next off season. Especially because some of these guys like obviously Elias lindholm's going to be super expensive on his next deal. Yeah. But I don't think Chris tanev is necessarily. I don't think Mikhail baklan is worth more than a flame than anyone else. Yeah, for sure. And like backlin probably ends up getting a pay cut. I mean, some of these guys will be more pricey. Hannah Hannah is a very rare piece, right? But for the most part, I think you'll have some flex to, you know, not necessarily keep the group together, but certainly keep some of it together. Make some smart choices in terms of moving forward. For me, this is a very clear run it back team. Yeah, and they've also got what they wind up signing coronado, they got Jerry, they start incorporating peltier, Dustin wolf down the road. Yeah, not nearly enough. But it seems like when you're thinking of who's in a coach this team, right? I think you that should also factor in as well of like someone maybe who could better incorporate and divvy up ice time to these guys to let them succeed as opposed to it, being a constant sort of struggle and learning and having to tough love it on your first, yeah, you're in the lead. Hubert O's best games have come with palate, right? Like that combo has been, you know, I'd love to see them roll with Hubert on the right side. Lindholm at center and pelletier at left wing and like maybe that's not a line that plays tufts, but that's what you've got backlink for. That's what you've got kadri for, right? I mean, one of the reasons I thought this team was going to be so good is I thought they had three matchup caliber center men. You know, I thought they had a defensive core that was the best blue line in the league. The goaltending I think has hidden just how smothering this team can be defensively, but. Why I can not for the life of me figure out why a team that struggles this much to score. Hasn't tried to carve out a offensive energizer bunny line. You know, it's like almost like a third line, especially given the struggles of Hubert O and sort of tamped down on their competition and just tried to have like one line that can really drive goal differential while everyone else drives play. Like to me that doesn't that seems like such an obvious fit and we just haven't even seen them try it for any length of time all season.

It seems odd that anyway, I just can't escape. How off the vibes are with the Calgary flames. Yeah. I was stunned by what I was seeing in so many respects. Now, there without Chris tanev and he's really like a glue key guy for everything. He brings everything together. But, you know, I'm watching them and technically they play brilliant hockey. Right. I think. Wow. I mean, from like a possession perspective. Yes. In terms of like the way they're deactivate. Yeah. And the way they control the puck and their positional game, I feel like it's excellent.

"That was a pretty cheap play by prawn. The 5 grand, not enough. No. In my mind. All right, game four, flames, oilers. Just a wild hockey game. It started bizarre and it pretty much ended in a similar fashion, right? It starts with Jacob marks from just whiffing on the puck, and there's nugent Hopkins with the empty net to open the scoring. The oilers roll out to the three zero lead. And then you fast forward and there's the comeback by the Calgary flames. And then I'll give I'll give Mike Smith credit postgame. Now it's easier to dive on the sword when you've won the hockey game and joke about it after the fact, but he openly admitted that he just didn't see the puck. And I think that was abundantly obvious when you saw a Rasmus Anderson fired in from a 130 plus feet, but talk about what could have been an absolute series changer, right? If Calgary finds a way to feed off the momentum of that time goal Anderson from way out there, I mean, it could be serious changing. I mean, that's how dramatic that was. I mean, stunning to watch, you know, pockets the back of the net. So I'm in the states, I'm watching on ESPN and Brian Boucher's doing the game. He's the analyst. And from a goalie perspective, he said, I could guarantee you that puck got up over the height of the boards and he lost it in the crowd. Yeah. Because what else would you be coming with any speed above the boards? Never. And then if you look at the video, like two oilers kind of skate through the picture. Yeah. And so sitting in the net on his knees can't see a thing. He must have just been a total panic and then to hear it hit the net. It would have made you want to throw up in your mask. He has three action was unbelievable. He was obviously pissed off and, you know, he didn't see the puck, but it looked like he was looking for somebody to blame. You know, like he's like kind of shake it his way with his arms and got a bark in the I think it was just, you know, culmination of emotions that bubble to the surface when he realized the puck was in the net. But the other part to that is once that thing goes in and of course, then it's, you know, who knows what's going to happen. There has been a growth since the coaching change in the oilers. In the way that they can play. They went through a long stretch of the season where they didn't score a lot. They just checked really well. And they got good goaltending. You know, they had that 15 game stretch or whatever it was. The cost of tip at his job. Right. But they got off to a great start, and now here they are one win away from the conference final..

We look at this as an acquisition for a player that fits the need and he's got term. This isn't somebody that's walking out the door in three months. But yeah, we'll still keep watching and see, see how we play and, you know, I feel comfortable right now. We've got some depth not only on our team, but our American League teams playing real well. "You're right. And because you made the comparison and it's an appropriate one to block best in the Canucks. Why don't we just shift over there as we start our Canadian tour? Man, endless speculation. You live in that market. I do a segment with Blake and Matt on saint carrison price. Every Wednesday, we're chewing on Barack besser. We're chewing on JT Miller. Conor Garland's name is out there. You know, look, I had a conversation with Jimmy Rutherford earlier this week about it. And typical of Rutherford, he's just not in any rush, or at least he's unwilling to acknowledge that there's any sense of urgency in dealing with it. The reason I'm laughing is Jimmy's famous for moving early. I know, I know. When you say he's not in a rush, except every year, trade deadline, he's one of her strikers, right? Well, look, there's the old analogy, right? He's like a duck, you know? He's nice and calm above the water, and then the feet are going like crazy underneath. You know, look, the conversation we had was more specific about GT Miller. And J team Miller has been very productive, as you know, in Vancouver. And that gets the attention of teams around the league. And so, he's a good player. People in Toronto are looking at the second line and they're not seeing enough photo to virus and nylander and Alex kerfoot. And of course, you can look at JT Miller or if Travis connect me wherever available, I don't know why he would be on a Philly, but if he were, you know, you can conjure up how those players would be a good fit on that second line. But if your Vancouver, you've got JT Miller under contract for another season. You know, what's the rush unless somebody blows your doors off, man. There are other players that Jimmy and Patrick galvin are probably looking closer at on the trade front. Well, one of the things that Rutherford said when he took over is that he wants to build cap flexibility, roster flexibility and speed. And those were kind of like his three points when he took over. And so, you know, the salary out without a lot of salary in is clearly a goal because he said that. He wants cat flexibility. They don't have any. The worst place to be in the NHL is when you're at the cap and your team is not very good. Right? And teams end up there all the time. And you're like, okay, so now I've got to change my team, but I've got no cap room. And I've got no flexibility. When you hear that dollar in dollar out, oh my gosh, that is like purgatory. Tough. How are you going to improve? So I think they will be busy. I think they'll try to be busy. And the names you mentioned all carry a price tag to them..

"So james i have to. I was a little caught off guard last week when nhl ruled out the playoffs schedule. I was like week. The games are starting this weekend. What's the thinking behind the nhl jumping into the playoffs. So quickly here well. They're trying to move as fast as they possibly can. Because they've got some deadlines on the other end. The nhl had a number of shutdowns with the pandemic due to covid absences for different teams and that of structure schedule a longer than they wanted it to. And there's time pressure because nbc is obviously the rights holder in the us. They've got the olympics this summer. They really wanna get the nhl playoffs astounding out of the way before the olympic start. So there's this window where they got to cram as many games as they can so they didn't waste any time getting started. Well one of the outcomes of this relatively quick playoff start is at the vancouver canucks who had a bad covert outbreak earlier. This year are still playing regular season games even though the playoffs have already started their in what appears to be a completely meaningless. Three-game series against the calgary flames. So are you or is anyone planning to watch those games. I don't think the ratings will be very good. No it's this never happened before in. Nhl history one hundred and three years of history for the league and they never had anything like this happened before they have tv rights agreements. That are a lot of money advertising agreements that are a lot of money and they didn't want to get new situation where they were shortchanging those media partners. And we're going to have to pay some money back because sure you know it's been a tough situation for the league revenue wise. They're down three and a half billion dollars from where they normally would be as as an entity as a league. They're trying to make sure that they can play out the season. And we've had headlines on our site that are you know things like oh connects are still playing for some reason or like you know here. Here's an article about the game. If you still care you know it's it's you know to be fair to the nhl in a normal season. There's a lot of teams that are eliminated with month or two months left in the season and they're playing a lot of meaningless game so it just doesn't quite look this meaningless at the place already started. They're still going

"Let's take a quick look around the NHL to see who was hot who was cold while it's early But the Montreal Canadians in Toronto police and the all Canadian Division North Division on overtime game where Toronto able to get the victory at home So they pick up the two points and their first game of the season and that is gonna be a really intriguing division. As is all of them are but the Canadian Division that's going to be an interesting one. Some good rivalry should develop over that, and that's good. I think this this'll eat needs a A number of good rivalries. But some of those teams are going to be playing because they're one short seven teams and there's a holding call coming up here at the Tampa so the Blackhawks with five away to go, We'll get a power play opportunity. A simple, Julie told power play. But it'll be interesting to see what happens in these divisions. When you consider that the Edmondson Oilers in the Calgary Flames already don't like each other, and that I think Calgary and Edmonton play each other 10 Times, 10 times because of the odd number that you're gonna play a couple extra games against. Gonna play nine games against everybody and 10. Against a team or two, huh? Which, when you have the chocks, Brady and Matthew in there, and you've got Vancouver on the rise, Ronald got tougher control at adjust. Anderson. Yeah. It's gonna be interesting to tell you that the Hatfields and McCoys have nothing on Edmondson and Calgary that rivalry. Boils over which it's been known to do from time to time hawks in a sicko feeling good power play. Shaw had the puck in the far circle lost it. So rarely took it away for Tampa, and he'll clear it all the way down again. Just a real pressure by Tampa right off the face off there. Finding handy shot with a bouncing pocket. Assumes you see that they're jumping all over. Get it down. The ice came through center ice with the puck. Got it. The Strom of the Lightning line left wing. He sends it over to the right wing corner. Brink. It slaps it behind the lightning net, hoping to find somebody around along the left boards. He did not taken away by Coleman and he'll clear down. Wanna wait left on the Hawks third Citgo, fueling good power play. There's Bo quiz, dropping the puck between the circles hot zone to cane cane to give and go past two to bring it back to cane over the lightning line. Who Strom along the left wing boards, lost the puck to the line kept in by both twisted cane along the right boards. The boat Qu'est, a one timer from the high slot, the blockers save made by vast Celeski. Shot takes the puck back. Left point. Tobe Oquist deep slot to the brink. It top of the left circle. He fired a shot. It was blocked. And now Hedman poke checks it away. But Cain took the puck back behind the Lightning net. Strom in the left wing corner 28 seconds on the power play Strom top of the left circle, now guns, a shot on goal, and I think that hit van Celeski in the mask and ricocheted away. Have to see the replay on that one. And now they scar somehow this one pinballed off of Dylan Strome state from behind the Tampa net. He was about 4 ft. Below the goal line. And the puck deflected off of vessel s key skate on ugly looking gold, But it'll count and the Hawks are on the board, trailing 5 to 1 sicko, fueling good power play it Play from behind the goal line by Andrew Shaw to hit Dylan Strome behind the net. The puck was basically raid against the stick and the boards behind the net and it just springboard it off the stick of Dylan Strome completely by accident. And it went off the skate of the defenseman turn AC through the legs of Vasilevskiy and into the back of the net that that's not how you drop the power play. But it's gonna look good. Black ox get their first power play goal of the season there on the board. It's 5 to 1 Tampa with just over three minutes to go, Dylan strong with his first of the season, first on the power play as well. Hawks one for three and the Sitko fueling good power play. Three minutes left in regulation turnover at the Hawks line. Keep up checks it ahead intended for Kubelik, but the lightning all recover in time to squelch that rush here now the other way, Brayden point to center ice dumped the puck through the air off the end boards..

The Big Story
How does hockey reckon with an abusive power structure?
"By the time you finish listening to this podcast. It's likely there will be more stories out there about abusive hockey coaches right now as we are recording this and as you're listening to it. The sport is facing a reckoning. It began with the toppling of one of the biggest domino's in the game. Mike Babcock out as coach of the Toronto Maple leafs tonight. Every mounting losses position became more and more tenuous and tonight his reign lean over. leafs nation is over. Mike Babcock was fired by the Toronto. Maple leafs for the same reason. Tons of hockey coaches have been fired before him. His team was underachieving. He might have been a bigger name than those other coaches but still not unusual then. The story started during the two thousand sixteen seventeen season. Mitch Moore had a private meeting with Mike Babcock and the coach asked then rookie to list the players on the team from Best Work Catholic to worst martyr complied not realizing that that talk within show his list to some of the players ranked the lowest and not long after that it became clear. The stories weren't just about Mike Babcock. Major allegations made against Calgary flames head coach. Bill Peters a former. NHL Her Chemo Lou. who spend spend some time with the flames in the early part of this decade calling for his alleged use of racial slurs while they were both part of the Chicago Blackhawks Organization now players ears are saying publicly things that used to be kept behind closed doors at all cost and the NHL in almost every league below it is realizing that it has a problem problem or more accurately that it has had a problem for quite some time? Now the question is what happens next. What did they do about it? What changes changes in the leafs? They've been playing a lot better since they fired the guy who humiliated one of their best players who thought I'm Jordan Heath Rawlings. This is the big story. Jeff Blair is a senior writer at sports net dot CA. He is the CO host of writer's block on Sports Net. Five ninety fan every day. He has covered a lot of dressing rooms ends and locker rooms throughout his career. Hey Jeff how you doing short. I'm doing well you've You've covered a lot of dressing rooms and locker rooms over the years I was. I was thinking about this the other day when the stuff happened with the Chemo. Lou and Bill Peters out of thinking to myself. I ever seen a locker room. I thought something nothing really poisonous and happen. And I think because unbalanced I spent more time around baseball clubhouses than anything else and initially when I started reporting Winnipeg CFL locker rooms is kind of a little different than hockey. I mean baseball. There have been African American players. There've there've been Latino players in baseball has its issues but it's nothing to go on a clubhouse now and see that the white players are in the minority I mean that's just the way it is and the NFL. When I covered it's the same thing and I don't remember any relationship with a manager or coach or a team I thought was particularly toxic? I mean they're examples of tone deafness. But what I think happens more often than not in a lot of these situations is just the manager coach. Whatever you WANNA call it becomes tone-deaf two things? Well why don't you start then by explaining how we got here where it started with Mike. Babcock in the leafs. Yeah there's a couple of things first of all. I'm a little concerned that people are sort word of mixing. Mike Babcock not you but people in general people were kind of going all Mike Babcock and then Bill Peters. Because here's the thing Mike Babcock seems to have tried cried some Caveman Sports Psychology on Mitch. Martyr So tell us about that. Mitch Monitor the first year. The story is now now that everybody's confirmed Mike. Babcock wanted him to work harder. So Mike Babcock called them into his office and said list your teammates in terms of hardest working to least hardworking. And tell me where you'd put Yourself Yourself Mitch. Marna with coach wants to do this so he goes ahead and does that and Somehow and I I don't know when it came out but somehow Mike Babcock doc essentially went to some of the guys that were below martyring. Say Mitch thanks. She works harder than you. You know this guy's dog in it right now and he thinks that works harder than you and the best line out of the Whole Story and God love Mitch. Martin but the best line of the whole story's Mitch Marnie just kind of shrugging and going nobody took it seriously right. You know it's like that's just that's just babs so I mean their stories. You know you can go. God stories about would coaches used to do for motivating players or trying to catch players airs. I Never Scotty Bowman Scotty. Bowman got tired of his team's missing curfew. So Scotty Bowman would go down. And I can't remember which city this went down to the front desk of the hotel and I think curfew was midnight. Went Down to the front desk of the Hotel at eleven thirty gave a stick to the dorm and said do me a favor when the guys come in get them to sign the stick and we'll we're going to auction off to charity so the next day Scott he goes into the locker eight. These are all the guys that showed up after midnight. Their names are on the stick so I mean stuff like that is you know. That's all part of an old school. Coaching you mentality. Whatever you think of it? Yeah it's and I mean at the heart of the the coach player relationship and this and this is why we'll talk specifically about. Bill Peterson Chemo. Lucas IT'S A. It's a point I think people are missing. I mean at the heart of a coach player relationship. It's a power relationship. I'm the coach. I control the most important part of your career. I control your time I control. How many starts you're gonNA make I control? Will how many at bats you're going to get I control if you're going to be coming in the ninth inning. I control if you're going to start back to back games like Then I control. You're earning power. This is sort of at the route. That's the traditional relations traditional relationship. Is that changing it is in the NHL. I find this fascinating because the four major sports in North America all right now if you look at sort of the players relationship to to power in the game the NBA players leak. It just is players are getting lots of money They make a a lot of money from shoe deals so they're comfortable financially outside of what they're earning contract like Shaquille O'Neal didn't spend any money he made playing basketball. He invested all all he lived off. His shoe deals coaches have no power over anybody in the NBA the NFL's you know you're disposable piece of meat. There's no such thing as guaranteed contract. Baseball's always had a very very strong players association. It's Kinda splintered now and I think we're kind of in an every man for himself air but what's happened in hockey is there has been an an influx of really talented really young players and because of the way the NHL 's collective bargaining agreement is setup. You Essentially Ashley. Now have a bunch of guys who were twenty two twenty three or twenty four making eight million dollars a year under contract for five six or seven years and that's the biggest difference to me. Is that players always used to make more than the coach and this is specifically the NHL players always used to make more than the coach. But they've got more term So if you're Mike Babcock and you've got three years left on your contract you've got Mitch Monitor. He's got six years left. He's making ten and a half million dollars a year. How do you? How do you motivate that? How do you manage them? It would take us. Ice Type. Doesn't matter to him take two minutes ice time away from me. I'm getting ten million dollars a year and by the way I got a job here for years down the road and you say that so hockey ocoee more than any other sport I think is is going through. This and hockey is going to half the data and and and the coaches are going to have to. The players aren't going to have to adapt. The coaches are going to have to debt. And this this gets the Bill Peter Situation and and why I think this is particularly vile you know first of all. I mean there's no statute of limitations and racism so I've heard people will make the case. Well he said this ten years ago three organizations ago he wasn't even with the flames. You have somebody claiming that he. He used the N.. Word that he used a racial epithet. You have that player's teammates backing you up. You have subsequent you have players coming out. Who played for Bill? Peterson Peterson Carolina. Saying hey he physically abused me. You have players coming out and saying yeah not only did he. Physically abused Rod brindamour. Not only did he did. He physically abused guys. But you've got player saying oh by the way we spoke. The Ron Francis who was general manager the team at the time and he didn't do anything wrong. There was something but the Akeem loose. The situation is really. I find it really bothersome. Because what was he supposed to do. You know these guys are playing in the American Hockey League They're not making a lot of money. Bill Peters when he was coaching that team the Rockford ice hawks. He held the future in his hands. so if you're a guy like a chemo Lou and you're trying to establish yourself or you're trying to get your career going going to your general manager and writing out your head. Coaches racist is probably not not a good career. Move and I think more than anything else. What this says is that at that time? Ten years ago that organization Chicago Blackhawks. There wasn't a structure in place. I mean I'm not gonNA say that guys don't yell things at each other in the locker room or on the ice and we we know they do. We know that racial epithets unfortunately are still a part of the sort of the on Ice Onfield Dialogue and sports. I don't think this happens now though like if we were rewinding this Chemo Lou had been Ah. I don't think that happens. 'cause he reports to somebody or he goes on social media then and it's taken care of but it bothers me that people are saying that some people are saying well you know ten years ago and nobody else stood up. It's people have to understand Dan that again. This gets to that that power relationship between the player and the coach. There's no way the player could you know what are you GonNa do. You're going to sacrifice your long term financial future because of this. I mean I'm not. I'm not saying that means. Bill Peters is right but hockey I think more than any other more than any other sport just by the the nature of how players are developed. Kids leave home. Kids go to town cities. They're billeted with people dependent on the structure. They are dependent on on the power structure there absolutely dependent on the power structure. And I think maybe that's what has created this culture around hockey the the NHL is really really trying. I think to find a way and I mean the NHL in general teams coaches are trying to find a way to deal with this the new age the players the the ultimate lesson the lesson from hopefully for this whole thing with Bill Peters is that there has to be every organization has to look at itself often say do we have the structures in

Top-seed Flames join Lightning as 1st-round flops
"Five to one last night Calgary Flames loss to the Colorado. I should reverse out the Colorado Avalanche Evelyn thinking in France avalanche defense Calgary Flames. And it seemed who had such a great year. It seems like having his regular seasons. Become a curse in the playoffs. Yes. We should say that the Vallone beat the flame. What they would call them in Quebec head. They beat the phlegm as games to one to win their opening round series. Now Cal as you mentioned. Yes, Calgary was the top seed in the Western Conference earlier this week. Tampa Bay the top seed in the east was swept out of the playoffs. Four games to number Columbus. So this is the first time that both conference top seeds. Lost first round playoff series. And this gives life to the old playoff adage that the postseason new season. Everyone has a chance, of course, some teams have nerve chance and others. But in this case, those shiny number one seatings didn't matter and as a result. There's now a lot more hope and belief among the team still

31 Thoughts: The Podcast
Former NHL player Andrew Ference explains his new position
"And we reserve this when we have special guests, namely someone who is make sure that the business card right here working for the NHL doing social impact, growth and legislative affairs. You may know him better as the former NHL defenseman with Calgary, Pittsburgh, Boston and the Edmonton. Oilers, welcome Andrew farance to the thirty one thoughts podcast is fantastic here, and I'm surrounded by Bruins memorabilia, tastic thank you still come to all. Two thousand eleven we're going to get a lot of those Boston Bruins. But I got the business card, right, social impact, growth, and legislative affairs. And my kids look at me with like complete confusion when I say that I I only have my BA. So explain what that means. So it's a new department that the Commissioner put together with my boss, Kim Davis who came in in January, I came in March, and it really does cover everything that said there, we do everything from hockey fights cancer to divert diversity inclusion hockey's for everyone programs all the way to government work in auto on DC. A lot of the stuff that I do is built on infrastructure infrastructure support for places that are games played and not just like pro arenas, but community rinks and all the way down to street hockey. So if you knew when you were playing that you'd be doing this post career, would you have done anything differently. Where does this seem like a natural progression? A man I think this is kind of what I wanted to do. Yeah. I mean, I always had stuff going on outside the game. Some of it was directly related to hockey. I mean did a lot with any green and the environment to work. So I had counterparts at the NHL that I knew well had different connections through union work. You know, whether that was through CBS negotiations went not but made relationships with the NHL through through that. So I was had a bit of an eye on the NHL and my last two years when I was playing an Emerson I actually finished up some school through through Harvard extension through corporate sustainability innovation so put some meat on the bones around somebody environmental work. And you know, I thought the Commissioner would like that too. If I if I was trying to twist his arm about giving me a job at the league. So I always knew I was going to do something. And I I never liked travelling on buses and and putting on the miles on the road. So I was pretty sure that scouting or coaching down in the minors or junior was not not in the cards for me. So steam in the game in somewhere and other, you know, you're you're somewhat limited after that. And businesses the way to go. So you're a member of the Calgary Flames team that went to the Stanley Cup final against Tampa in two thousand and four and one of the players on that team told me that you, and I think it was he mentioned again LA in the late Steve monitor us. To have some pretty epic conversations about things that would not normally be discussed in dressing rooms are on planes. Like, he said, and I hope I have the people, right? Who would be involved in these conversations? But there would be things like the Middle East peace process or stuff like that. People.
