"And first of all, you're right. Like they love guys from high academic places. And he loves that, you know, look at the end of the day, high school recruiting is kind of a guessing game. He brought up the example of Marcus Mariota who didn't start until his senior year of high school and who the only reason they even knew who he was was Mark Alfred was there in Hawaii recruiting and saw him in a practice or a camp, I forget which one. There was no tape of Marcus Mariota. So they offered him. They had no idea he would turn into a Heisman winner. And I'm sure they have plenty of stories of reverse where the guy didn't work out. What would these college guys eat again? You're right. He's like, it's great. I can call it David cutliffe. He'll tell me exactly what I need to know about this guy. Forget the other example here. There's somebody where somebody else on the staff knew the coach of that. He's like, it's pretty rare. It's not somebody where somebody in our staff has a direct connection. They took these twins from north north Texas. The defensive lineman. They were really productive last year. I think they combined for 15 or 18 sacks and 30 tackles for loss. And I think he looked like a, you know, we're losing a transfer here. He's going to go to Miami. We're going to bring in two players. We know we're really good. We'll help us. By the way, one thing that works in UCLA's advantage actually, they're one of the rare schools of this little more common out here that are on the quarter system. So they can have fit them in at different times. Yeah, so they had like 7 guys who enrolled last week and started class after spring break. Whereas I remember Caleb Williams watch, everybody was like, he doesn't, if he doesn't, if he doesn't enroll somewhere by January, whatever it was, 15th, I don't remember what 20th,.

"Power 5, okay? People that are let's call it Texas tech, Oklahoma state, Missouri. Teams that aren't your upper Echelon team, but they're power 5 schools. They are boosters and their donors are going to have to make a point to say, hey, when east and when you come here, our ability to help facilitate the name image and likeness money can be matched or can be met just like the other schools. And I think then you'll be able to see a guy like Caleb Williams who left Oklahoma, go to and go to USC. Maybe he'll go to school like Missouri or go to school like Texas tech or go to a school like Arizona state, not the operation of the power file conferences, but as you call it Paul the middle class. And I think you're going to see that. And so ultimately, you just got to decide the school, their boosters, everyone has to decide what they want to do. Are you willing to just survive and make money or do you want to win because if you want to win this on a certain way that you're going to be able to play this game now? And the game is called, it's called transfer portal. It's called making the key at our selling the key and not only on your institution, but selling the kid on what you can do for him. And you know what, Paul, it's hard time this happened because for the last 25 years, going all the way to the NCAA mark Yemen and everybody that was that's been involved in up there has made a ton of money on these kids. And so yeah, it may be a little out of whack right now. It may be a little like the wild wild west. But you know what, Paul, I'd rather have it a little like the wild wild west and having what it was for the last 20 years, which is the good old boy network where everybody gets taken care of except the kids. Well said, as always, booger McFarland booger, you'd be well. I look forward to seeing you soon. Thanks so much for coming on. Paul, I'm looking forward to Paul and I can't wait on a barbecue chicken and ribs and sausages this week and can I continue to play? Bugger, you know my eating habits are a little peculiar. So you have any crab grass in your yard. I think I might enjoy that more. And Paul, when you say procure you, you mean very, very limited. You eat less than anyone I know. I've had quite a few meals with you, booger. I always enjoy watching you eat. Well, Paul, there's nothing better than a country boy from Louisiana having some sausage and some chicken wings and some baby bag ribs. I look forward to indulging and I'll think about you while I'm eating, my man. I'm currently fasting for lent, but thanks anyway, booger. Hey, you'd be well. Take care of yourselves. Always one of the greatest joining us talking about college football, very strong comments there about it's about time change has arrived. We'll take a break back after this..

"Bomb show podcast. It is the beginning of March Madness, but a major football story over the weekend, and it was told to us first by Pete Tamil. ESPN. It's always good to see Pete, especially to begin a new week. Let's talk about the story that Pete had Jaden Daniels, who's been a multiyear starter at Arizona state heading to LSU. Pete, great to have you on and this seems to me like this is a very significant development for Brian Kelly. Tell us all about it. Yeah, Paul, I really do think it is. I think it's one of the most intriguing quarterback transfers to come in this last off season. And Jaden Daniels doesn't have the cachet maybe of Caleb Williams, but there aren't many quarterbacks in the country who went in the portal who have just had more production than Jaden Daniels. I believe he had 29 starts. He threw 32 touchdown passes in three seasons at Arizona state. And he's a guy who after his freshman year got projected to be an NFL quarterback. He had 17 touchdown passes in just two interceptions after that 2019 season. Arizona state went 8 and 5 beat Florida state in a bowl game in Jayden Daniels was on the way and since that time, his production has been uneven to be polite. Arizona state had a ragged season in COVID in 2020. And then this past season, he just had ten touchdowns, ten interceptions, obviously that Arizona state program is mid implosion as we speak and certainly he didn't have the same talent around him in 2021 as he did in 2019. So I think the fresh start is going to be fascinating and it's certainly going to make the quarterback race at LSU the most intriguing in the SEC this upcoming season. Yeah, and let's talk about that because it's jam packed and you got miles Brennan coming back for I think it's tenth year. You've got you've got other transfers in there. You've got a hot shot, 5 star, and I know none of us can sort it out yet. But it would seem like Brian Kelly must think a lot of Daniels to make this pitch. Hey.

"This is a guy who as an 18 year old freshman was doing stuff well beyond his years at USC. Got hurt last year, change coaches, losses job going into last year, Keaton was projected as a number three overall pick in this year's NFL Draft class. I think he's a guy who's going to explode next year at Pittsburgh and he's one of those guys who will never broadcast the work he's doing, but he does so much work off the field to get better. And every time I talk to him, I love the guy. I had to give him a shout out. He's my favorite quarterback in college football. Him or Caleb Williams, and I just really, really love Keaton and the work he does behind the scenes. And I think he's someone that does not get the respect he deserved for the work he puts in and the talent he has. Definitely, definitely. I gotta check him. Where does he transfer into 'cause it feels like Pittsburgh? He's gotta be going. Yeah, he's gonna pay you my bad. You just said it. Pittsburgh. Okay, so there's a strong USC to Pittsburgh path line for whatever reason because it wasn't at the same thing that happened with Peter man, was Peter man Pittsburgh or they had somebody. Peterman was Pittsburgh, max Brown went from USC to Pittsburgh. Max Brown. Yeah, that's in the decision making process. It's Pittsburgh was a team that brought back basically their entire offensive line. Their entire offense, other than Kenny Pickett, and they won their conference last year. They're really good football team that just needed a quarterback and you plug in a guy with his skill set. He's a great decision maker. He's really accurate. I just can't wait to see this guy hopefully explode next year in college football and make a name for himself and really get the recognition he deserves. I just really believe in the guy. Oh, yeah, man. There's a ton of guys in college right now that she was like, oh man, it's gonna be interesting to see what they do. I'm interested to see who takes the chat. What's Georgia's quarterback's name was little guy's name. He's like, that's embedded? They try to tell me they tried to tell me he was 5 foot ten or that broadcast. I was like, that's a lie. 5 foot 8. I am 5 foot 8. I know if 5 foot 8 look like. That's 5 foot 8. He is 5 foot 8. But he might put up enough college lovers that somebody's gonna give that a look in the NFL and look, that is gonna be worth your game pass subscription to watch that in pre season because I don't know if you'll ever go and see it in the regular season. But it's better at 5 860 pounds and to think about stats and thinking the best player on the team, man. It has no awareness that he is not. In fact, the best player and athlete at Georgia. So I'm interested to see what happens there. Special rattlers, another interesting what? Because Spencer Rattler is a maniac. And all of you ever seen the QB one season that he was on..

"Big moments. And do you believe in yourself? I thought we saw moments with Patrick Mahomes in the AFC championship game against Cincinnati to end their season. In the second half, we're Patrick Holmes looked like he was his confidence was shaken and his entire decision making paradigm was actually a little off kilter. Cam rising is going to have that problem. Cam rising is very, very stable and steady. And I'm very very excited to watch this guy next year. At Utah. The number 7 quarterback I can't wait to watch next year in college football. Is bow nicks. He has transferred from auburn to now he is in Eugene at the university of Oregon. Here is the story with Bowen nicks. Can he elevate himself to become a top level quarterback and become an NFL quarterback? He's really talented. He can run. He's a big dude. He's got all the physical traits required. And if he has a really great year at Oregon, I think he could skyrocket and just massively jump up the charts. The same way actually Joe burrow did in 2019 with LSU. There's potential here for a really big opportunity where he could just impress a ton of people. And maybe turn himself into a first round pick. So keep your eye on bone nicks. I am very curious if he will reach his goals at Oregon, but I think he needed a change. I think that he's going to play with maybe some better more talented athletes around him and I'm just very, very interested and excited to see how Boeing does this fall at the university of Oregon. Number 8 is Jackson dart. Jackson art another USC quarterback. Dude, USC and Oklahoma had just a glut. I just a crazy amount of talent at the quarterback position last year. He is transferring from USC to the university of what is it? I guess old miss. I don't actually know. Is it university Mississippi? Is it I don't know how I don't actually know the official name of illness other than I call it all miss the rebels. I wish I knew that. I feel weird that I don't know that. Anyway, he did not want to compete with Caleb Williams. I can not blame him. The minute it felt like, hey, Caleb Williams is going to transfer to USC..

"Receiver. I've heard some rumors of a high profile defensive lineman, maybe from the ACC interested in transferring in. Maybe another running back Kirby's not done yet. Caleb Williams at one time who committed to who signed today was reportedly looking pretty seriously at Georgia. What do you know about that? I think he was just leveraging USC for more money. Honestly, I don't think he ever intended on coming to Georgia. I think it was just a matter of leveraging USC. I mean, my goodness, he shocked himself. I mean, look, when I say this, I'm not talking down. This is the way it is now. This is free agency, Paul. These kids are going to do that if they're savvy enough, they're going to shop themselves around. They're going to raise up the price and then they're going to cash in and that's what Caleb Williams did at USC. I mean, I've heard talk of three, $4 million for this kid. I don't know what's true, what's not true? I can't foia it. It's not, you know, you're not able to get that information public at this time, but we're talking millions of dollars now the going rate for a transfer like a Caleb Williams, JT Daniels also in the portal. You know you're here in LSU, you're here in West Virginia. You're here in Notre-Dame, TCU, or you know, all over the map, and you wonder where will JT end up? Will there be an NIL deal? He's got a wait till after spring. He's got a graduate. He didn't get a release from Kirby. Kirby wanted to become back JT said no, seen this act before coach. I'm transferring out. And now we have to wait until JT graduates in the spring before he's eligible as a graduate transfer. So there's a lot of different rules. A lot of different moving parts and a lot of dominoes falling that are going to create the situations for these players to go to different schools. I don't want to come off naive here, but I'm just going just for the sake of the integrity of the game, which I say was a smile and a laugh. You take millions of dollars that he leveraged his ticket to SC for that kind of money, Mike, for those who were a little hard to hearing. Explaining how you do that. Well, I mean, there's NIL deals. Now, technically, schools can not set up and IL deals. The athletic, they can't be officially associated with this. But the booster clubs can. And we've seen it in Miami. I think they set up an LLC if I'm not mistaken. So right now, poets, it's almost a wild west gold rust race for schools to figure out the best vehicle to secure funding to pay players. And even as we speak, I was talking with George athletic director, Josh Brooks, and he said, look, I'd give you a comment, but the rules are changing so fast, man. You know, there's already things changing in the two weeks since I did an interview. So this is a really fluid situation. The NCAA trying to figure out how did they get their arms around these NIL dealings because what's going to happen is they're going to get undercut from outside sources from agents from other marketing groups. And suddenly, donors aren't going to be contributing to old state U, they're going to be contributing to what was once a slush fund, now called an NIL fund to secure players. So right now, everybody trying to create the perfect wheel and figure out how best to maximize the money to put these players into their schools. It's really a crazy time in collegiate athletics. And back to something you said a minute ago about stetson banner. I asked you the question because you can't assume anything right now with the Georgia quarterback room. So give us, first of all, stetson Bennett decision to come back, which surprised a few people. He had the Hollywood ending. So what happened? Why did he come back and where does all that stand? Well, first of all, you have to understand stats in Ben Paul. He's a little different than a lot of other kids out there. He doesn't necessarily want to cash. He doesn't want to be the Rudy of the SEC, okay? He's not ready to be the 30 for 30 or the Netflix special. He wants to play football. And he said after the game that he's playing football somewhere next year wasn't sure if it was going to be George or somewhere else, but stetson Bennett, by gosh, this guy wants to play ball. He knows that he could cash in right now and the story would be perfect. He'd go out on top and ride off into the sunset. And yes, there were people that wanted to push him down that road and get a younger, more talented person in there. But Bennett says, no, man, I've come this far, I've been a scrap, or I've been a fighter. I want to stick it out. I want to be in Georgia bulldog. I want to come back and you get the feeling that Kirby says. All right, man. No promises. You gotta compete just like anybody else. Carson back, year three, former state champion in the state of Florida. Don't forget. Rock band, grand 5 star, look for both trauma. Guess what's that? You gotta beat these guys out. Then it says, you know what? A beat him out before. I'm stuck around 6 years. He's gonna be 25 years old this season. He's ready to battle for that spot and we're gonna see what pad monkey does for one more year and then George is going all in on arch Manning. And that's where that story's going. And I realize we're not allowed to talk about recruits down the road, but we did see Kirby smart at the basketball game the other day..

"You're ready to have confidence and control. This fall, Roman ready. So I feel like this really kicked in with Vernon atoms. We're in an atoms, was at eastern Washington, obviously, was at an FCS. He lit up some pack 12 schools and Oregon took them and he played really well there. Then I thought about this when you set a minute ago max about like the guys who never got recruited and they really embrace it right after Vernon Adams, you got another kid from the same league just his recruiting stock blew up and then all of a sudden he ends up at Oregon. It didn't work out as well. But it was like there was that and then you started even to see, I remembered garrick dieter who tore up the Mac at Bowling Green and then he went to Alabama and he had a nice journey. He's in the NFL now. I'm guessing he probably would have been the NFL. Certainly there's tons of NFL players who came from the Mac. But I think there are guys who are like, hey, I would like to try to go up against elite defensive backs every day. And maybe it'll be better for my development and those things. So I think it's an interesting dynamic. I want to correct I think Stu you had said earlier in the podcast, like Kenneth walker was like a notable. He wasn't really a notable at this time. You know, he was a guy that most people were not talking about leaving Wakefield. No, I was giving you guys a compliment. You knew how good he was. And we didn't even have him high enough on him. Yeah. I didn't know anything. But that was but in truth do that was coming from the Michigan state staff. They, when they saw him, then they were okay, they were big on him. What I wanted to ask max is who are some guys now that you never heard of like December 1st to all of a sudden, you're like, oh, I didn't realize that guy's such a good player. That's a good question. I think that there are some guys you kind of like you saw like Jacob Cowen from Utah is a guy you'd catch on TV a little bit or you'd see, you'd look at the national standings and see he's, you know, top tenant receiving and say, oh, that's interesting. I wonder like, oh, they found a good one there. And then he goes in the portal and has all these offers and stuff. Like the entire Virginia offensive line pretty much went in the transfer portal after brompton and hall quit there. That was interesting to kind of see where all those guys would shake out. You know, you watch them this year and they're hard though. Because Dane brugler has his mock draft today. He has icky from NC state number one. I'd be lying if I said, I knew about icky until I started working on a story talking to ACC defensive coaches a year ago. Like so it's like I don't think we know. At least like you're saying max, like when it comes to TfL stats or different things, you're going to see the names at least. But when it comes to offensive linemen, I think, unless they're on a big school, I think we'd all be lying if we knew. Coaches even with those guys, they're still guessing on them. Res you've written about Bruce the evaluation part of that is super hard and sometimes you're just looking for a guy that's a certain size and has a little bit of experience. I think a good example would be like Wyoming. So I don't know how much you guys watch Wyoming this year. I can't say I watch them a ton. If I watch them, I don't know that I would have been able to identify that, oh, they've got they've got a running back that I'll go to Arizona state and they got a wide receiver that I go to Tennessee and they've got a DB that'll go to Oklahoma and another DB that'll go to UCLA. It's interesting some of those players they go in and both of their quarterbacks also live and that wasn't even the best player on the team. The best player is going to the senior bowl. Like he's going in. Yeah, yeah. So same with Hawaii. Like Hawaii is and certainly they went through their coaching change and this was part of it. Oh, that actually started before the coaching change. For sure. For sure, exactly. But you know they have players going to Oklahoma and UCLA in Cincinnati. It's kind of like you haven't really heard those names unless you really watch them or really intensely a fan of their of that team. But then once they go in the portal, suddenly, everybody wants them and there's kind of this demand and is that just because they have a position on the eater? Is that because they turn on the tape and love it? I don't always totally know, but it does make these guys kinda famous overnight in some cases. Guys, you're describing Wyoming. I mean, I'm listening to you rattle off these names. You would think Wyoming was the reigning mountain west chance. They went 7 and 6 last year. They lost they got shut out by Fresno state. They lost 14 to three to New Mexico. They did close strong with a blowout win over the eventual mountain west champ, Utah state, and they put up 52 on Kent State in the ball game, but I don't know. Did they understand all these big power 5 guys on the team? I don't know. Hey, so number one, Caleb Williams. Yep. I think once Jackson dart entered the portal, we assumed he would be a Trojan by now. So what's your read on why there hasn't been that announcement yet? Yeah, and Bruce, you could probably speak to this a little bit better, but it has been curious. I think we were sort of expecting the Caleb Williams would make that announcement last week and it's easy to kind of look at this and kind of speculate connect the dots here a little bit because it is kind of a big game of musical chairs, especially with the quarterbacks and say, oh, what the guys out there, you would think that Caleb Williams is going to USC and you know old mis really needs one so you'd assume Jackson darts going there, but that's also kind of the fun and intrigue of this stuff is maybe those guys could pull some surprises here. Maybe Jackson dart rather be a you may be Caleb Williams has found a better spot than SE. I would still assume that it's gonna be USC. I'm not quite sure why it's taken an extra week or longer to get that figured out..

"Okay, three, two, one. Oh. My goodness. Good morning, good afternoon. Whatever it is for you, I hope you're having a fan passed a day. My name is Zach shameer. It's a strong opinion sports episode 400 and 43. A lot of stuff to talk about today. Good stuff pretty much all good stuff, actually. A lot of good stuff happening in the sports world. Let's start today with a piece of news that is small granular, but worth acknowledging briefly is that USC quarterback Jackson dart has entered the transfer portal. Now, I kind of feel bad for the guy because he waited until the last moment and now he's got to figure out where to go and who wants him, where could he go? Where can you try to get playing time? It's a hard, hard journey for him ahead because now he's really talented. He's an NFL quarterback, I'd like to see him, frankly, anywhere, like the SEC, somewhere big in the Big Ten. I don't really know. I don't know where he's going to go. I have no idea. Some people suggest BYU. He's from Utah. I think he's actually better, like more talented than a BYU. I think he really is like an NFL quarterback, but we also saw Zach Wilson go to BYU and become the number two overall pick. So that's an interesting thought. Now, Jackson dart aside, he's really, really good. He's a planted Keenan Slovak as his starting quarterback at USC. The thing that I think everybody heard this news and thought was it basically almost guarantees that Caleb William C former Oklahoma quarterback is heading to you as CEO Caleb Williams was there. I saw on his Instagram story he was at a Laker game the other night. He visited USC over the weekend. He played four Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma last year. And Caleb Williams might be look, he is probably the most talented quarterback in all of college football, like he's a future in my opinion number one overall pick he reminds me a lot of Kyler Murray and Jalen hurts maybe combined talent wise like he can run with power, he's got a great arm. He can move. He can do whatever he wants with the football. He's amazing. And him at USC. Sounds fun. Sounds exciting. I'm just kind of waiting for that news to come out, but you know Jackson darts a really good college quarterback. And I think one of the only people that could transfer in and caused Jackson dart to leave is Caleb Williams. So something happened there, and I'm just kind of waiting for that news to pop at some point very, very soon..

"Has to and Bruce, if Matt rule ends up unemployed, is there a college where we think the coaching situation is maybe settled, but maybe it's not settled, looking at unibrows. Would any power 5s cut their coach loose in mid January to replace him with rule? Well, there's one obvious potential thing here, and when we talked about when this question came in, it wasn't, but now I feel like it is. You know, if Jim Harbaugh leaves Michigan, if you're a Michigan, do you sit there and go, oh, Matt rule would probably be a good fit. No brainer. He is, grew up in State College, went to Penn State, Penn State is probably not going to come open anytime soon with James Franklin's new deal. So I would think that would be interesting for him what also is there. Let's say, so he has ten and 22 with one game left. No quarterback in sight, they had mortgaged a lot of capital and money on Sam darnold and that was a dreadful move. He fired Joe Brady, I don't know if he would look at it and say, you know what, I'm gonna get ahead of the posse and maybe try to negotiate my way out of here because I only have one more year left realistically if that. That's if Michigan comes open. I don't know. I mean, you know, we thought a little bit about Nebraska and what that situation's like. I don't know, we've talked so much on this podcast about Nebraska over this year. If money was the $20 million buyout was a prohibitive factor in November, then it still prohibitive factor now. You know, the part that is interesting for me with Nebraska is and I, you know, I've had these conversations with our Nebraska expert Mitch Sherman on this in the last month. But you know, if they are put down a lot of money towards new facility and I just have a hard time thinking if they couldn't turn the corner last year, are they going to really be able to turn the corner this year? And as it relates to Matt rule, if he would look at the Nebraska job. I mean, he chose Baylor in the state. It was in in terms of like it was as down brand wise as could be given they cleaned house after this sexual violence scandal there. He chose Baylor over Oregon, and he did a remarkable job there. If Scott for us can't get it going at Nebraska, I mean, I don't think Matt rule is going to look at any job and go, oh, I couldn't get it going there, right? No, just for a quick refresher. Matt rule went to temple in 2013, went two in ten the first year, and by his fourth year, they were ten and three and won the AAC. For those of us old enough to remember when temple got kicked out of the big east because they were so uncompetitive. The idea they would one day go ten and three and win a conference was amazing. Then he goes to Baylor after the art brial scandal goes one and 11 in the first year. 7 and 6 the second year, 11 and three division title sugar bowl appearance the third year. So I think any college would be interested in him. And you know, if this happens, if he gets fired next week, you know, we've seen how these schools are just in such a rush to hire somebody because of recruiting in December. There's a bunch of schools that you would be like, I mean, nothing against Brent pride, but if I'm Virginia attack, man, I would have been nice to no Matt rule is going to be available. I just picked that one randomly. There's a bunch of schools like that that would probably if he were on the market, I wanted to get him. So that I bring that up in part because this week was the 15th anniversary of the day Nick Saban came to Alabama and people waiting for him at the airport. And it's just crazy. I don't know if that could happen now that malmo or the 80 at the time just waited him out, like the Alabama job was open for a month. Waited him out waited for the end of the NFL season to hire him. I don't know if an AD would do that today, but it certainly worked for them. All right, this one's from John Roberts. Hey guys, I'm not sure what the rules are surrounding college basketball early signing day, but they do sign before the season starts. You've all said that wouldn't work for college football. Why does it work for college basketball, but not college football? I think so many coaching firings happen in systems are way different in college football. I mean, maybe somebody would say, hey, I wouldn't want to play for Tony Bennett because they would want to play in a more uptempo system or whatever. I don't follow college basketball closely enough to make that call right now. But I think in football, I think it is way more dependent on that and a lot of guys if you commit to it to somewhere and they pull the plug, you're getting something very different. And I just think that I just don't think that if it's a binding deal and you couldn't get out of it, I just don't think that that makes a lot of sense to have it in place. I would definitely still like to find a way to I think there's now a strong push to maybe we should have never done an early signing date. The way it's affected the coaching carousel. I still think the idea behind it made sense, there are a lot of guys who know where they want to go to college way before February 4th, why can't they just get it over with and sign? But then are you going to lock them into it? That's the question. So like back in the day that the original plot was you would do it September 1st, and they get it out of the way before they're senior season of high school. And then you don't have to spend months. Before early sign date, you know, coaches would spend December and January going and doing all these home visits of kids who they had already committed because they had to babysit them in case somebody tried to come in and flip them. But to your point, let's say a guy signs with a guy had signed with Oklahoma on September 1st and then Lincoln Riley leaves, and he has no say in the matter. Whoever the next coach has, you've signed a binding letter of intent. Would they be, and if would they be willing to put in and out, but if they did put in and out, then is there any point having it in the first place? That's the question. All right. This has come up a little bit on some shows I've done this week. I've got asked it. I want to get your thoughts on it. With Cincinnati and Michigan, both making maiden voyages to the CFP this year. The question to me was, who would I think would be the next team that could make its first appearance next year? And I want to see if you land on the same place.

"That doesn't seem to be the case. There are basically like three different points of contention and there's no there's no format that everybody agrees on. Every no, actually this is, again, what he said basically, every factor of it that you can think of, should it be 8 teams or 12 teams, should it be automatic qualifiers for the top 6 conferences or should the power 5 conferences have guaranteed? He's like, for everything you can think of, there's been at least one commissioner who has said publicly, I'm not voting for that. So somebody has to change their mind. And I think we all just kind of thought eventually they would, but I mean, you've got two SE to SEC teams playing in the national championship again, you would think there would be an urgency, by the way, the Cincinnati Alabama with lowest rated semifinal to date. There would be some urgency to change your product, but I think it's looking increasingly like they're going to scrap it for now and start thinking about what it's going to look like in 2026. When there is no contract, and you can basically invent it from scratch. And then if you come to that, like they agree to a 12 team play out in 2026, then can you work backwards and say, hey everybody, now that we agreed on this, what do you say we started a couple years early. But the version of it that was proposed in June and that seemed at the time, like it was going to get rubber stamped, has just, I don't want to declare it dead, but it's on life support right now. But didn't they, you know, back in June, it was early June. I don't want to say they anointed it, but they were close to trotting it out, right? Yeah, well, what happened? Nobody bungles PR quite like the BCS slash college football playoff. Yeah, they did. But at the end of the day, that was four of the 11, right? It was sankey, schwarber. But then why go down that road to build the public up if you are going to disappoint them? That is a great question. We should call up our Ari fleischer and ask him. Why did why was your strategy to unveil this? Not like leak it, not, you know, it's not like we secret uncovered it. It was we're gonna hold a press conference, the four people who crafted this are gonna get on a press conference and go in great detail, talk to the media about this idea that this proposal. And only after that, are we actually going to take it to they held that press conference? I remember this. A week before the meeting where they were actually going to present it to their colleagues for the first time. In fact, I remember thinking, I have booked my trip to Dallas quite far in advance thinking this meeting was going to be that that meeting would be when they would tell us kind of where things stand. And when they ended up preempting it, I was like, I don't know if I should still go. It seems like they've already decided. And it turns out no, four people had decided and still needed to sell the other 7. And as we've said on here many times, it did still seem like that's where I was headed until Oklahoma and Texas went to the SEC. And for whatever reason, that became the moment when the ACC Big Ten PAC 12 group of 5 said, way, way, way, way, wait. You just pulled a fast one on us. We need some more time to think about this. I'm sorry. We talked about how they bumble the ranking show and how that is so such a such a disaster every week. If your Bill Hancock, the person you hired to do PR at this point, they should just say, before you come into these meetings, you have to wear a ski mask. Because you are just robbing us blind. So just we're here and where the ski mask so we can just get through this. His name is Ari fleischer, he was the former White House press secretary. He now has a consulting firm that specializes, I think, it specializes in sports and this is, if not his biggest client, one of his biggest clients, and he is, he needs to be involved. He needs a skill mask. Well, I think they should end. I think if this thing fails, they should immediately send him an invoice. We want our money back. You screwed this up royally. Because you and I follow this stuff closely. I'm sure some of our people listening follow. But most of the public just saw a headline last June that said, CFP looking at 12 team playoff and assumed that's what's gonna happen. So if they come out the day of the national championship game in which two SEC teams are playing because remember about ten years ago it was the day after the LSU Alabama game that they started pivoting toward four teams. But this time they say, yeah, we are tabling this till 2026. I mean, look, I want to make it seem like a 100% of college football fans want a bigger playoff. It's definitely not the case, but I would say the majority do..

"Like for instance okay, putting out I out of the side for a second. Back to the national championship game. If you were to judge it solely off, comment sections and Twitter. Nobody's going to watch this George Alabama game because everybody hates it. Everybody hates, you know, I don't want to watch this game again. I don't want to watch two SEC teams. I don't know what the number will be, but the number of people who will watch that game when the Nielsen ratings come out will be astronomically high. It might not be as high as some past games, but it will be very, very high. And so yes, I think I don't think most people who tune into the national championship game every year or to the rose bowl or whatever, even really notice niel. You know, you maybe even don't even realize it's happening. So we're talking about people who follow it, the absolute most closely. And by the way, I'm not just talking about fans. There was a Notre-Dame administrator, like university relations person who got caught up in a bad rumor and tweeted about how NIL is ruining the sport. People that actually work for teams, coaches, sometimes take shots at it. You have to admit, there's definitely a sense you talk to people. You talk to coaches like it's just turning into a big bidding war, you know? And Caleb, my reason we're not is that Kayla Williams now becomes the poster for that. The idea that he can basically just name his price now. If that's what he's truly if it's less about the NFL and getting everything NFL more about just how do I make the most money? Like, when you were clearly went into college with this idea and has had that he's going to try to make the most money possible from his name image and likeness. And I would just respond to that by saying, there are so few players that are that good and that obvious that they're going to be that he could be the number one pick in the draft. If some whoever booster at whatever X school wants to pay $2 million to make sure Caleb Williams place for their school, you might actually, that might actually turn out to be worthwhile. If that's possible, that there aren't a lot of players like that. Let me ask you something because you mentioned the like I'm very excited to watch Georgia Alabama in this game. I think it's clearly two best teams. You know, Ohio State has a huge brand as a viewing power. What I think is interesting is granted last year's game was a blowout, but I forgot this until we started talking about it. I looked it up. That game last year with Ohio State and Alabama. Again, it wasn't not a close game, but the lowest it was like record low. 18 million people watched it. I don't think that's 'cause it was Ohio State, Alabama. You think it's just 'cause it was a blowout. It was a bad game. I think ratings for the sport were down all season last year. It was. It didn't feel like a relief talk about this before. It didn't feel like a real season. Ohio State, how many games have they played going into that? 6, 7 games. It just didn't feel like a real. So people were kind of checked out. Yeah, it's interesting. We could probably do and I don't know if I would listen to it, but we could probably do a separate podcast on what fans actually would get excited about and what they wouldn't. I know they got excited about Joe burrow and LSU and how they played, but I don't think Alabama has been there, and you can talk all you want about Alabama fatigue and everything like this. I think there's plenty of compelling storylines in this game. I think and to that point I think it is more I don't know how you'd measure this. I think it may be less about, oh, watching these teams play, that just played an early December because that happens in every other sport. You know, the Super Bowl could be a rematch. The NCA tournament championship game could be a real, that happens in other sports, but it's Alabama. People are sick of watching Alabama. Interesting thing is they do watch them during the season is a ratings juggernaut, but I don't think some of them might be. They want to see if they're going to lose. I think they're the other stuff like something to be said for that. But no, I'm excited for the game. I just like watching the best teams, the best players. And these two teams, between them, a whole lot of those guys are being playing on Sundays. These are the best teams. There's no way you could have rigged that bracket or put some other team in, where it would have ended up in a different outcome. I don't think Michigan was undeserving of playing in a semifinal by any means. Just weren't as good as Georgia. So, well, that leads us to the last topic I wanted to bring up. And we are going to do emails, send your emails the audible pod to Gmail dot com. So I'm going in the Apple list this weekend. And I have a feeling I'm going to be spending a lot of time as is often in the case of my career waiting outside a closed door meeting for commissioners to emerge. This we think is make or break weekend for playoff expansion, because the commissioners are planning to meet Saturday, then come back and meet again Sunday and then Monday morning is the annual meeting where the commissioners and the presidents on the board of the CFP meet. And one way or the other, I think, I don't want to jinx it. They're going to come out with some sort of pronouncement afterward about what they're going to do. And I don't think the public's going to like the final result. Yeah, there's already been some foreshadowing of this, our friend Ross dellinger had a long story about it this week at SI, and then on Wednesday, John Gonzalo, who works out of Portland as a radio columnist as well. He had George Cleo. The PAC 12 commissioner and asked him about the expansion aspect. This is what George cloud cough said. Candidly, given everything that's been said publicly, looks like we're stuck at four for a while. That's pretty strong for a power 5 commissioner directly involved in the process to go on the record saying a couple of days before this is going to convene. Later in the interview, he said, well, first of all, he was very blunt about because he wants expansion. He wants expansion soon. And he sets a broken system. It's not a real playoff when 3% of your sport plays for the national championship. It's become a self fulfilling thing where the teams that make the play off a bunch then get the best players and keep making the playoffs et cetera, et cetera. Everybody's coming from their own perspective. He's going for the perspective of conference. It hasn't made it in 5 years. So obviously he wants to play off expanded. But I think you also sense a frustration there where you would think reasonable, you know, I think we've all been thinking like, well, at some point, saner has prevailed, they'll reach some sort of compromise, and we'll have some sort of expanded playoff. But.

"You also broke something this week that set the Internet ablaze that sources both around Michigan and in the NFL, say that Jim Harbaugh would be very tempted to go back to the NFL after this coming season particularly if it's to the Raiders. And well, why don't you take it from there? Yeah, so this started coming up early in the week and then after I started hearing about it on the Michigan side as well, I got some calls into people from the NFL who had echoed it and that's one of the lines in the story. They think it's very real that his interest is very real, that the timing is ideal in this. So there's a bunch of layers to this. The first part is, obviously, much has changed in the past year. A year ago, as you well know, Jim Harbaugh just fired Don Brown. I think there were two and four. And he was going to have to take a big pay cut to stay on. An incentive laden deal, well since then, he shook shook up his staff, hired a much younger staff. It worked out really well. They not only beat their archrival. They whipped Ohio State in an arbor, and then they went on to blow out Iowa to win their first Big Ten title in almost 20 years. So Jim Harbaugh, the ultimate competitor had basically slayed the dragon. That was the one thing he had actually on going into last this past year. His record actually was pretty good. He had a bunch of top ten top ten top 15 seasons. It wasn't like it was a disaster. It's just he hadn't been able to beat Ohio stain. And then he did. Nobody's talking that they lost to Michigan state, right? They beat the buckeyes. And they beat him handily. And then they didn't stub their toe against Iowa. They blew them out. So the timing of him being ready to leave, I think, and is there. Because you talk to enough people who are pretty close to Jim Harbaugh, they'll tell you they always thought he was at some point going to go back to the NFL. Then there's the Raiders part of this. That's where he got his coaching start back in 2003 with Al Davis. He was spent a couple of years on the staff. There was a quarterback coach. He still pretty friendly with Mark Davis, the owner. That's what I'm told. And they have a good quarterback. Their car. So a lot of times if you look at an NFL team, it's like, do they have a quarterback or not? Well, this team definitely has one. So there's that. Then there's the bears element where he also it's another place he knows the leadership he knows. They have a young quarterback who's not nowhere near as proven in Justin Fields, but he knows Justin Fields game, obviously because he coached against him and saw him lit up by him when he was at Ohio State. So I think there are some very intriguing opportunities there. And we'll see what happens. All right, playing devil's advocate. If I'm a Michigan fan, they've been hearing rumors like this almost every year since he's been there. They cooled off once they had the bad season last year. But did they hear from us about this two years ago? No, I would say once the program started trending in the wrong direction, that faded, but the first few years when he was having success it seemed like every year he might go the NFL he might go to the NFL. And to the point where they're kind of numb to it and, you know, in many ways, I mean, you know, nobody likes to hear that their coach might leave. And nobody wants to, I think in most cases, people, like with Lincoln Riley, going from Oklahoma USC, that's seen as an insult for Oklahoma fans. Why would he go to that program? Same with Brian Kelly. Bones to the NFL. Usually people understand. But in this case, because he's an alum and has professed his love for Michigan. I think there's a genuine faction who believe we're all making this up and it's just the NFL media stirring up rumors. He would never leave his Alma mater. I don't know about the NFL media part because obviously I'm not the NFL media on that, but other thing is, you know, I glance at my mentioned at one point and somebody's like, yeah, that's the agent stir this up. So I don't even know who Jim Harbaugh is agent is. Like when Jim, I don't even know. When Jim Barba went through the contract situation last year, there wasn't an agent like driving it. There's no like Jimmy Sexton figure involved in Jim Harbaugh's situation. So let's put that aside. I mean, he's trying to get more money out of this than I would say at the press conference last week saying he would do the job for free was not a good leverage. Also with him, you know, with people saying that he earned a lot of money and incentives by going to the playoff win in the Big Ten title and he's donating. He says that money to staffers at Michigan who lost their jobs and took pay cuts in the wake of the pandemic. So there's that part of it. I think one other element to this is Jim Harbaugh has never coached anywhere as long as he's been at Michigan. He was at San Diego for three years. He was at Stanford for four years. He was at the forty-niners for four years. He's now been at Michigan for 7. That's a long time for any coach. It's certainly a long time for Jim Harbaugh. Remember, when he was at Stanford, he took over what was the worst power conference team in the country. And four years later, they were top four and they want to be CS. It was a remarkable job and obviously that program doesn't resemble what it did doesn't look like now, what it did back then, I think what he was able to do this year at Michigan, it looked a lot like it looked very familiar. I don't know, I had somebody asked me this because I've been done a bunch of media and radio and TV shows since this week. And somebody made the case well, they just got blown out by Georgia. Do you think that's the reality? He was like, wow, we can win the Big Ten, but we're just not recruiting at the level of George and Alabama. And that's what it takes to win a national title and I'm out. And I was like, I don't really think he looks at it that way. Because by the way, Ohio State recruits closer to Alabama and Georgia than anybody, and they beat Ohio State pretty handily. It's not to say you're going to beat them that way every year, but I don't think Jim Harbaugh looks at it that way. I don't think Jim Harbaugh looks at things the way like Ari wasserman does. He just has a different perspective, I think, than that. Well, let's be honest, none of us know how Jim Harbaugh thinks. He is the most unpredictable hardest to read, coach in the entire industry, because he just doesn't I mean, I did notice this season. He actually did do a couple very unusual for him. Probably a sign of how we're relaxed to you as this year, like he did a sit down interview with pat 40, he did a pretty extensive thing with ESPN. He actually did talk a little bit more to the media this year, but he's the last person who would talk about career aspirations and that sort of thing. So I just think the people you talk to would know better, what his mindset and thinking might be. But he's going to be completely unpredictable up until the end. The other part of it is, you know, you focused on the Raiders, but you also mentioned the bears..

"On Saturday, November 20th, Michigan state plays at Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. We're going to learn a lot from that game. Now my number four team in the country right now is Oklahoma. They had a couple of close games early on this year. Then they been Spencer Rattler they're putting Caleb Williams at the quarterback position. T elevated this team, things might have been different if Caleb Williams had played all year rather than Spencer rather that Spencer Rattler at times held back Oklahoma's football team on offense, and that's part of why the two lane game is close. The West Virginia game is closest, Spencer out there was some playing very well. So Oklahoma's 9 and O, I think they're better than some of the, again, the box score, some earlier in the year. We're a lot closer than people might be comfortable with. A part of that's because the quarterback position was wrong for them. I want to watch the Oklahoma offense against an SEC football team watching Caleb Williams against Alabama would be really, really fun. Kind of reminds me of the year. We got to see Kyler Murray against Alabama. I want to see that happen. Number 5, I have Michigan state. They're the only undefeated team left in the Big Ten. They still have not played a pen state or Ohio State yet, though, so we'll see what happens there. And then number 6, we have 8 NO Cincinnati for the record. I hope since then he gets into the college football player. I think it'd be fun. But we need to have a nuanced conversation like the strength of schedule matter. Are they truly one of the four best teams in the country Cincinnati? I don't think so. I'm not even sure that Cincinnati is the number 6 best team in the nation. Like I ranked Cincinnati number 6. I think Oregon's probably better, probably. I think organ is better than since 99. So I would put Cincinnati at 6 because I like the story and that does matter to me, but I certainly can't put Cincinnati as one of the top four teams in the country. I feel uncomfortable, putting it in at 6, but it's fun, so why not? I'm really curious. Wake forest, Oregon, Cincinnati, Michigan state right now, is keeping themselves in the hunt. You've got Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, all these teams are just kind of in the nebulous just sitting around waiting and we will see I'm really excited to see what happens in the college football playoff rankings as the year goes on. The national title really does feel like a battle between Alabama and Georgia anyway. So it's like, well, if Georgia loses to Alabama and the SEC title game, then in my opinion, and they both get in and it's a null conversation anyway..

"I don't mind following that. Oklahoma BTC 52 to 31, this is another team in the college football playoff conversation. Now, Spencer Rattler, the Oklahoma quarterback former Oklahoma starting quarterback has now officially been benched because Caleb Williams is the new quarterback starting at Oklahoma. He had 5 total touchdowns for passing one rushing. That one rushing touchdown was a 41 yard run by Caleb Williams. It was very impressive. He was 18 for 23 passing for 295 yards. And those four touchdowns passing that I did mention, Caleb Williams is I'm becoming a really big fan of the guy. I like his demeanor, his teammates seem to like him. He seems like a good leader who is just very positive and I love watching Caleb Williams play quarterback. The way he sits in the pocket is very calm and strong. It's very unique the way he like his feet are very deliberate, very slow, but not slow 'cause he's like slow, slow because they're controlled and it's just a different style, a different temple. You don't often see where he's not bouncing his feet around a lot. He's very calm, very strong, very slow. And watch the way Caleb Williams uses his lower body to generate force with a football. It's really impressive. And I gotta say Caleb Williams reminds me a lot of parts of his game that are taken from two different former Oklahoma quarterbacks. One is he runs a lot like Jalen hurts, powerful, but quick, but man, Caleb Williams can really lower the shoulder and break a tackle, which I love Kyler Murray, he never could do that. But then he throws the ball like kyla Murray's got Kyler Murray's ability to throw the ball. He runs like Jalen hurts, Caleb Williams is fantastic. I love the guy. And it's just, I can not wait to watch him continue to progress and grow. Like he's not perfect. He's a little late on a couple of throws and still figuring it out. But definitely it's undeniable in my opinion that Oklahoma is a much better team with Caleb Williams as their starting quarterback. And it makes me wonder, I look back to some of the ugly wins at Oklahoma earlier in the year with those games have been blowouts if Caleb Williams had played all year. I don't know. I think you had to let the Spencer Rattler thing play out. But certainly Caleb Williams is fantastic. Now, I still worry about Oklahoma's defense. They gave up 31 points to TCU. TCU receiver Quinton Johnson had 7 catches for, listen to this a 185 yards and three touchdowns. That's ridiculous. So in the college football playoff, can Oklahoma stop an SEC team? I doubt it. And it's certainly if they match up with Cincinnati, that's like the dream scenario. Can we get Cincinnati against Oklahoma? 'cause that's a game Cincinnati has a legitimate shot. They probably don't win, but they have a better shot of beating Oklahoma than they do of beating Alabama or Georgia. So keep your eye on that. I'm curious how things all play.

Good god in heaven. Am i glad that spencer rattler was still the starter at oklahoma when we played them does that caleb williams whole lee smokes talk about a football player. That dude is unbelievable. Throws a nice pass and is just incredible running the football So we'll see how badly he carves up kansas Maybe this is a game in which rattler gets to see some time because they get out to a lead early but I'm picking oklahoma obviously So there go. Oklahoma beats kansas easily. The next game on my list is organ number ten oregon at ucla. oregon's five and one. Ucla five and two chip. Kelly has that offense humming. I enjoyed watching their game against Was it california. The other night saturday night it was a good game That offense is really good. An oregon is also really good. No organs who played california. I don't remember who who Ucla just beat but Oregon is good and that tibidow or whatever that guy's name is coming off the edge on their defense is just almost completely unblocked. People think Chase young from okla- from ohio state but a little bit trimmer and a lot quicker. The dude is just unbelievable. It's going to be a fascinating match up to see what kelly does to deal with him and still be able to make that offensive. His run Then my third game is number. Twenty five purdue who's four and two newly ranked. Is you just heard against three and three wisconsin.

"caleb williams" Discussed on Wendell's World & Sports
"But how the fuck you know kayla williams is gonna do kayla williams. If the guy that's going to be turning the thing around kayla williams is going to be. The team is going to be the guy. That's gonna put this team at the level where you expect it to be caleb williams. Have you been the practice. Do you know what's going on. Have you seen any game time. Action of caleb williams so far as being a quarterback for oklahoma makes you say that he the better option than spencer. Rattler do you. Do you really think that you have more knowledge more information about who the better quarterback and fitting the scheming giving oklahoma better chance to win. You guys have more information. You guys have more knowledge. More education on the subject and lincoln riley really. You're going to be doubting what rink lincoln riley is doing with quarterbacks. Really come on man. Come on again. Special rattler has. He lived the heisman expectations. No there's a lot of people who thought that. Yeah guess what. What made you think that he was going to be heisman. Trophy worthy to begin with. Then you guys see the first half of the season then you might count it an argument by saying yeah but did you see the second half of the season now. We'll played down the stretch of those last seven or eight games but still. This was something where. Trevor lawrence was. Coming back with. Justin fields was coming back. Or does shawn watson was coming back or someone of that. Calibre was coming back. There were still some question. Marks concerning spencer rattler in terms of being a high yen heisman trophy favorite type of quarterback. So i'm going to go ahead. And i'm going to trust the lincoln riley in terms of what he thinks is best for the quarterback position to give the sooners the best chance to chance to win an kind of believe that if kayla williams was the guy that can give oklahoma. Better chance to win. I think lincoln riley would put him in but selling like jackasses and cheering on saying we. What caleb we want. Caleb like like come on man come home. i mean. I'm not saying that spencer's go ahead and curl into a ball and cry and say life is not fair but i mean you know. Ignorance rose muck when we started doing that. Bullshit windows world in sports. I'm your host window. Wallace glad that you could be with us. Speaking about what's happening in college football this weekend very quickly. clemson if the end of the dynasty. I'm not gonna you know it's so easy to go. That route is so easy to start saying that because many people think tokyo dabo. Sweeney you just you just want to you. Just just waiting the pounds.
