"On the ESPN F 50% of that is correct. The 50% part is Peter Burns is hosting today. Alyssa Lang playing the role of Katie George, who is doing the Lord's work there. In the Bermuda Triangle as she is, um it has been. I must follow on instagram. Like every time she sends something, I just tweet out going. I hate you like handstands. So jealous as you I'm jealous of you. Alyssa Lang is you've got your your scarf it down some waffle house this morning. Uh, what did you pay like $97 to get it delivered to our studios there in Charlotte or what quarantine and this last year and a half of really, really messed me up. When it comes to food delivery services PB. There's a high window that I'm willing to pay. To get a Waffle House All Star special delivered to the office as I do radio, and I think that threshold today was about $22. So, um, I'm going to enjoy everybody much. Well, well spent well spent. Hopefully, the first hours well spent. We talked breakdancing Coco Melon Paw Patrol. Uh, dressage Aaron Rodgers. Three home runs in a game. I think we've touched all the bases. Here for that first hour, But I kind of want to get into a little bit more right now with the Olympics and this was again What we saw Caleb Dressel do last night was nothing short of fantastic setting their Olympic record in the 50 minute free, Uh, wins. What now what He's had five gold medals, three individual gold medals, two of the relay races. He's won gold as well. And when you go back and look at it, you think of the names felt spits. And now you'll say, Dressel, right? And I'm not sure how many of you driving on a Sunday morning or like I'm all in on on on swimming and diving 365 days a year throughout my life, Yet the Olympics comes around, You see historic performances. Katie Ledecky being one And now, Caleb Dressel. Which Alyssa You're telling me. You knew this story like you were the early adopter of the Caleb Dressel. Um, storyline whenever you were in in Jacksonville back in the day. Yeah, I mean solely because of where I was living and where I was working. I told the story earlier in the show, but I moved and took a job in Jacksonville, Florida. About two weeks before the 2016 Rio Games started, and I worked for an NBC affiliate. So you know, it's just every minute. Pretty much of your coverage outside of breaking local news is Olympic based. And I remember them kind of given me the brief, you know here, the local kids that were covering and being in Jacksonville. You know, Florida University of Florida was very close. We covered the Gators a lot. And I remember them saying one of the first names Caleb Dressel. You can't say Caleb Dressel name enough in our newscast. It was a name that I had heard before. But I didn't know a lot about to your point. I wasn't watching swimming and diving year round. Certainly outside of the Olympics, the more people I talked to around Jacksonville, the more I went down to U F and talked about Who is this kid? What makes them tick? What makes them Someone that you all think is going to be so successful. I mean, it was unbelievable the support and then in Rio, he really burst onto the scene there and then this year, obviously continuing his Olympic career. Is just as impressive, but I also want to make sure we get this in PB. Did you see the the video that the Lions tweeted yesterday as David Blough was watching his wife? So so blouse wife, Melissa Gonzalez missiles. Gonzalez, representing Colombia was in the hurdles If I'm not mistaken, and you know we did some great coverage over NFL training camp, we're going to get into a ton of those storylines here in a couple of moments, but I thought that might have been literally the best week ever was just seeing the video and just seeing the crowd reactions from all of the families, But to see that in the lions all all of the coaching staff and players, um you know, helping him like just I can't even imagine to think you know, actually, probably even more your five years of training just to get to that point and then to live up to its got to be out of control. It's unbelievable. And like you and I talked the other day about how I think I think you and I were talking about this. About how much it stinks that you can't have fans in the stands, and obviously you're used to hearing those roars when a gymnastics a landing or you win a four by 100 M swimming event. That's the one kind of silver lining for me is being able to watch the double boxes of the families gathering in the parties and the watch parties in these small towns and the Lions quarterbacks room sitting there watching Melissa Gonzalez compete and David Blough sitting there screaming at the team like I actually welled up and got a little emotional just because it was so cool and I was like, I can't imagine Watching your spouse on that stage, not being able to be there but watching him or her competing That way. We've seen Caleb Dressel wife in the same situation and videos just being so overcome with emotion. It's just so cool, and that's what makes these two weeks so much fun. Um in and we saw, Um, if I'm not mistaken Pat forties wife about 40. He does some great work over at Yahoo sports, one of our colleagues around covering college football. His daughter is there Participating and how? How cool it was for Brooke believe they won a silver medal in in her event, and so the fact of like he's one of the few people that got a chance to go over to Tokyo and actually See their kids perform because of everything that's going on. And I think about this year in the amount of pressure, it must be. Because Alyssa, you you ran college track. Correct? Uh, not in college, but he wasn't quite good enough. But you competed on on on a level I played collegian golf and listen. We had, like nine different people and watching this play college tournaments, right? It wasn't It wasn't a huge thing. But I think people fail to realize the amount of pressure when there are no fans like fans in a certain way, almost give you that comfort because there's always that buzz. There's always that. Hey, you're on your your there. It's no different than when you and I are doing television on SCC Network or ESPN. When you tape something, it feels really weird. Right when you tape something, it's always a lot more pressure than whenever you're doing something live. That's why a lot of people. You know the film? Yes, Bill O Reilly. We'll just do it live like That that clip is because when you're on television or radio, you prefer to do it live because there is that excitement and I think the same way of even training camp opening up with fans. Is that people? People thrive on that, and I can't amount. Imagine the pressure that was on Simone Biles of our any of these gym this to perform, but normally you're performing in front of a crowd. It almost is like Don't have to really think about myself doing this in a vacuum, But then you exacerbate that. Of what happened with files and all these other athletes not having fans there. That's got to be absolutely, just like harrowing on so many different levels. Yes, it's nuts to me. I mean, you talk about that mindset, and certainly for us. That's a great example of live versus not live because when you're not live, you always have that in the back of your head knowing, okay, if I mess up we can do this over again. And then you end up doing it eight times because you know you can mess up But when you're live You're locked in..

Ledecky Not Retiring: 'I'm at Least Going to 2024, Maybe 2028'

"My last word is going to start with Katie Ledecky, who won another gold medal this time and the women's 800 M freestyle, So she's got four total from this year's Olympics. Two golds, two silvers, and she did a postgame post swim interview. Where she told us that she is not done yet. That's not her Last swim, she says. She's going to go to 2024. Then maybe 2028. Which is just absolutely miraculous. And why wouldn't you at this point when she absolutely dominated in the 800 m relay, like I mean, this is certainly not the last race that we're going to see her in. But getting ready for Paris in 2024. I'm very excited to see what Katie Ledecky can can bring to the pool, and she's been phenomenal Storyline her Caleb Dressel Dressler, like You know, Olympic Swimming has been such a fun event. I think because The let down in a lot of sense, with Simone Biles and and the stuff that she's dealing with with in in what that's done to the overall landscape of women's gymnastics, like swimming is very much been, like, all right, We're right here like we're going to take the viewers for that, and we are going to become like what the center stage event is, at least for the time being before track and field starts and all of that, But Shout out to Katie Ledecky. I mean, she's been an absolute monster. And I'm thrilled that she thinks that she's planning at least to go for sure to 2024 in Paris and then maybe consider 2028. I mean, she will certainly be quite a bit older at that point, And as we know, age plays a big factor and what you can do in the pool and up till a certain point, But I wanted to get into Simone

"That child from alone. Those are bigger concerns for me that even covid not that I'm not concerned with covid sure, my biggest concern is keeping those Children safe and around water. Hey, ratty while we've got John, we'd love to swim. Gears and ask you some questions about the summer games in Tokyo crossing fingers that the games do do go on. But you're the chief fundraiser for USA Swimming. How do you think we stack up against the rest of the competition? Globally, We're gonna have some grapes from us. The United States has been number one in the world of swimming for 65 straight years. That's not going to change this summer, and you have a A local in your area named Missy Franklin, who is a very famous swimmer, one of the most famous in history, And even though she's retired, and Michael Phelps is retired, that won't change this summer. We will have a great team Katie Ledecky. Was the greatest female swimmer will still be swimming Caleb Dressel, who might just be on track to win six or seven gold medals this summer. So we're going to have a great swim team and I really feel like the Olympics in Tokyo, which I will call my eight Olympic Games this summer for NBC will be the greatest Olympics in history will look back on this Olympics. Is the greatest in history. That's my opinion. I don't know any fact talk about cautious optimism, cautiously optimistic that it's going to take place and take place safely and securely. I was going to ask you that because there is some talk that they're going through 1/4 wave in Japan and it's interesting because we're talking about the safety protocols and water and covid and the like. But you as an Olympic athlete when you're in and around the village. Would you be nervous as an athlete to be in that environment because of Covid? No, absolutely not. That's me. Personally. If I have been vaccinated, I can't think of any national teamer out there that has not been vaccinated. I think most of the world's athletes Coming into this This village will be vaccinated. But the most important thing to remember I worked for a Japanese company for eight years. I know the Japanese people very well and they will do everything in their power to keep this Village. These athletes safe and secure. There is no doubt in my mind. They spent over $30 billion to make this happen. They're not going to Have any expenses, Um, go by the wayside and keeping our athletes safe and secure. That's an interesting perspective. Before we wrap up with you. I was reading that swimmers are used to doing their final races in the evening. But because of the international TV schedule, they have to do them in the morning instead. I think this happened about 13 years ago in another Olympics in Beijing, But how big of a deal is that for swimmers? Do you think to try to get their mind around that different timeline? I only get the big deal at all. Everybody's in the same boat. Yeah. I mean, it would be different if you know someone something in the morning somewhere that night, but Everybody swimming in the morning. So you're all together in this situation, and it didn't matter in Beijing in a weight, and I don't think it will matter in Tokyo. The great thing is, it's live in prime time in the United States, so you'll be able to watch everything alive, at least on the swimming side of things. Right here in the United States has the year Delay made it tough for swimmers because your creatures of habit versus having it last year when I was supposed to be versus having it this year. It has no doubt about it. I think you know, in the beginning, especially a lot of summers in have pools to swim it. Katie Ledecky is the greatest female summer in history, and she she was swimming in a backyard pool for like, three months, so It has definitely happened to regular folks who couldn't swim and it's happened to the best swimmers in the in the world. We've all been put put through this together. Those guys and I think we're all going to come out of it just lying because we're going to do this together, and we're going to understand that everybody is in this together. I think we're well on our way to beat the thing..

"I c three AI software enables organizations to use artificial intelligence at Enterprise scale solving previously unsolvable problems. C three A. I. This is Enterprise AI. This is all things considered from NPR news. I'm Ailsa Chang and I'm Ari Shapiro. The origin of the Covid 19 pandemic is still unknown was the global outbreak sparked by a spillover of the coronavirus from animals to humans? Or did the virus escaped from a lab in China? As the other leading theory suggests, as NPR's will stone reports, the international effort to answer those questions has stalled. Science may ultimately settle the question of where the coronavirus emerged. But the holdup right now is diplomacy. China wants the next step of the international probe to focus on other countries as the possible source. The US disagrees and the World Health Organization is left in a tricky place. The U. N agency arranged an investigation inside China earlier this year but doesn't have a lot of other options at the moment. Dr Mike Ryan, head of emergencies for the W. H O recently told reporters. W H O doesn't have the power to compel anyone in this regard. The W. H O acknowledges the earlier investigation was highly restricted by China and reach no firm conclusions. But Ryan maintains the agency is still pushing. We worked through consensus. And that has worked for us and for our member states for 70 years, except some who know the W. H O well, and the China U. S relationship are skeptical. We're at an impasse. That's Lawrence Gostin, an expert on public health law at Georgetown University. China is implacably opposed to continue to investigation and certainly opposed to one that fully transparent, Gostin says. China has dragged its feet on this origins question all along. So why would that change now, especially since speculation over whether the virus leaked from a lab in the Chinese city of Wuhan has gone mainstream. China will dig its heels in even more given the public criticism because it sees this in stark political terms. The W. H O does plan to hold talks in the fall to consider an international pandemic treaty, and Gostin says countries could try to expand the chose powers on the coronavirus investigation, a move that China would likely oppose Yang June Wang is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. I think China has not shot at the dog, it has left flexibility. But Huang says this also depends on the Biden administration, toning down the rhetoric instead of pop. Lately, accusing China covering quite diplomacy and what the a more constructive approach But it could be too late for that President Biden has publicly ordered U. S intelligence agencies to double down on their review of the likely origin of the virus. Juliette Kayyem was a homeland security official under President Obama, who is now at Harvard. I think in the end, the administration's review is likely to be inconclusive and satisfied, No 100%. But KM hopes the Biden administration's effort will at least underscore how did took China's word far too often early in the outbreak. For instance, repeating that the virus did not spread human to human and waiting till March to declare a pandemic. We're not going to war with China over this, but what it can do is put pressure on the W H O about how it conducts itself in these kinds of investigations and how China is not to be believed anymore. In a rare move the head of the W H O called out China in the spring. For not being more transparent during the investigation there. But even if China does let a team of scientists back into the country, what would it find? Dr. Daniel Lucey is an expert on infectious disease outbreaks and teaches at Georgetown. He says he assumes China has already followed the obvious leads like tracking down the supply chain of animals to the Wuhan market. It's just not plausible to me at all. Trying to get in already do that They do that. And Lucy says when it comes to the lab leak theory, I just don't see any reason China would never allow forensic lab investigation even then, if you want to hide something, you can hide it. Which is why he thinks the only way to get China on board is to back off the lab League theory gather a new team of scientists. And see what new evidence China is willing to share. No questions asked. Will Stone NPR news? Despite the continued uncertainty surrounding this summer's Tokyo Olympics due to Covid, there are signs that the games will begin next month. One of the strongest indications US athletes are taking part in the Olympic and Paralympic trials for the right to compete in Tokyo. NPR's sports correspondent Tom Goldman joins us now with an update. Hey, Tom. Hi. Hi. Okay. So trials and some sports wrapped up over the weekend and I want to start with those USA Swimming finished up in Omaha, Nebraska last night, and I understand that there was a pretty dramatic moment involving one of the stars of the 2016 games. There sure was. Also five years ago, Simone Manual became the first African American woman to win an individual swimming gold medal. She won 100 M freestyle. Now she failed to qualify in the 100 in Omaha's very tough loss for her, and she revealed she had been dealing with something called Overtraining syndrome. She had physical symptoms and dealt with in insomnia and depression. She said the pandemic might have contributed. Remember when the games were postponed last year, it added 1/5 Year of training to what's usually a four year cycle, so she had one more chance last night to make the Olympic team the 50 M freestyle, and she won that all out Sprint by 1/100 of a second and she was incredibly emotional in the pool after winning in a press conference. She explained to reaction. It kind of was just a mix of a lot of emotions and what I've been through, really? In my entire swimming career. It's not just the last couple of weeks, but just from, you know, being a young bar girl and not knowing if the sport is swimming was for me and continuing on this path. It's just a part of my faith walk part of her faith walk that is so moving to hear Well, the U. S. Usually does do really well in swimming at the Olympics. Can you just tell us about some of the other athletes we may be hearing about in Tokyo? Well, you will be hearing about the amazing Katie Ledecky, Of course, a veteran but still only 24. She's expected to add to her five Olympic gold medals. She won four events in Omaha, another Katie, Katie Grimes, 11. Teenagers made this team and Grimes was the youngest at 15. She finished second to Ledecky in the 800 M freestyle. She's going to Tokyo and then on the men's side. This is the first trials and will be the first Olympic Games. Since 2000 When Michael Phelps wasn't in the pool, Caleb Dressel is being touted as the one to start filling the enormous Phelps void. Dressel won three races in Omaha and and could compete in at least six events in Tokyo individual races and realize all right that is swimming. Meanwhile, the track and field trials are going on in Eugene, Oregon, which I didn't know has been nicknamed track down, you would say to what's been happening there. Lot, including nine time Olympic medal winning runner Allyson Felix. Qualifying for her fifth Olympics. Garrett scandal Ng one, the 10 event decathlon. That's a cool event that determines the best overall athlete. They run. They jump. They throw and speaking, speaking of throwing shot put her Ryan Krauser, the defending Olympic gold medal winner. Looks very good again. He broke the world record in the shot the first night of the trials, and we should note that the delayed Paralympics will get underway in late August, and there was a big trials event this past weekend, right? Yeah, there was Elson. It was notable that for the first time NBC covered what's called the super trials combining Paralympic swimming, track and field and cycling. It happened in Minneapolis and the coverage. Some of it in primetime is an indication the Paralympics are becoming a respected competition of their own. That is NPR's Tom Goldman. Thank you, Tom. You're welcome. You're listening to.

"From NPR news. US disagrees and the World Health Organization is left in a tricky place. The U. N agency arranged an investigation inside China earlier this year but doesn't have a lot of other options at the moment. Dr Mike Ryan, head of emergencies for the W. H O recently told reporters. Rachel doesn't have the power to compel anyone in this regard. The W. H O acknowledges the earlier investigation was highly restricted by China and reach no firm conclusions. But Ryan maintains the agency is still pushing. We worked through consensus, and that has worked for us and for our member states for 70 years, except some who know the W. H O well, and the China U. S relationship are skeptical. We're at an impasse. That's Lawrence Gostin, an expert on public health law at Georgetown University. China is implacably opposed to continue to investigation and certainly opposed to one that fully transparent. Austin says China has dragged its feet on this origins question all along. So why would that change now, especially since speculation over whether the virus leaked from a lab in the Chinese city of Wuhan has gone mainstream? China will dig its heels in even more given the public criticism because it sees this In stark political terms. The W. H O does plan to hold talks in the fall to consider an international pandemic treaty, and Gostin says countries could try to expand the Wh Ose powers on the coronavirus investigation, a move that China would likely oppose in June. Wang is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. I think China has not shot at the dog, it has left flexibility, but Huang says this also depends on the Biden administration. Toning down the rhetoric instead of publicly accusing China covering quiet diplomacy and what they are more constructive approach, But it could be too late for that. President Biden has publicly ordered U. For instance, repeating that the virus did not spread human to human and waiting till March to declare a pandemic and we're not going to war with China over this, but what it can do is put pressure on the W H O about how it conducts itself in these kinds of investigations and how China is not to be believed anymore. It's just not plausible and to me at all, Trying to get in already do that They do that. And Lucy says when it comes to the lab league theory, I just don't see any reason China would never allow forensic lab investigation even then, if you want to hide something, you can hide it. Hey, Tom. Hi. Hi. Okay, so trials in some sports wrapped up over the weekend, and I want to start with those USA Swimming finished up in Omaha, Nebraska last night, and I understand that there was a pretty dramatic moment involving one of the stars of the 2016 games. There sure was. Also five years ago, Simone Manual became the first African American woman to win an individual swimming gold medal. She won 100 M freestyle. Now she failed to qualify in the 100 in Omaha's a very tough loss for her, and she revealed she had been dealing with something called overtraining syndrome. She had physical symptoms and dealt with insomnia and depression. Meanwhile, the track and field trials are going on in Eugene, Oregon, which I didn't know has been nicknamed Track Down USA to what's been happening there. Yeah, there was else. And it was notable that for the first time NBC covered what's called the super trials combining Paralympic swimming, track and field and cycling. It happened in Minneapolis and the coverage. Some of it in primetime is an indication the Paralympics are becoming a respected competition of their own. That is NPR's Tom Goldman. Thank you, Tom. You're.
