"He's not going to win the championship. I can tell you that. We said, Truex won't do anything because he's a nice guy. It's not in his DNA. Yeah. It's not in his DNA. Ross Chastain did this. One wins races, just like Joey Logano. They're different people, man. They're nice. They're the greatest guys in the world. When they put a helmet on, they've got one job, one job, and you were this way. Listen, you know you were this way, 'cause you could, I was never as good as these guys, but you put a helmet on and your job is to win a race. And when you get up the next morning and shave, you see that reflection of that trophy behind you, and you really don't care. You know what I mean? Because you're the guy. You're the guy. You win the race. And Ross Chastain has that. Joey Logano has that Kyle Busch has that. There's a number of guests and there's guys that don't have that. And true X doesn't have that. Because it's just not in his DNA. And you can't change it. Ross Chastain is who he is, and you got to appreciate that. I'm also one more thing that I sent sometimes as I'm watching these races and see these things unfold and transpire and then the things that happened and the things that people say, I wonder, I think back to more our era and even before that, but what would these drivers have done having to race against Cale Yarborough, Delaware and Hart senior and your dad who was aggressive when he needed to be and you didn't mess around. David pierce was a lot to say as much as the silver fox of that. He was much that. What would they have done against those guys because that was on a weekly thing because you were running short tracks all the time. And how would that handle that? And here's the thing, okay? Well, listen, and even I honestly believe, even if we had Twitter and Instagram and Facebook that you wouldn't see kale Yarborough Richard Petty or Earnhardt on it, you know what I mean? They would never have said that. That was my fault. But no, because here's what they because that for them was a sign of weakness. Right. That was a sign of weakness. And you listen, these guys got in and drove cars with broke necks and broke arms and beat up so that you set that out of the car and you thought, holy crap. You know, Bobby Allison used to come by you and it'd be 600° and he'd have his arm up on the window. How's he doing that? How's he laughing me with his arm in the window? You know what I mean? The thing is that those guys fixed it when it happened. You know what I mean? They just fixed it when it happened. If it was North Wilkesboro, you could count on pulling in that garage. Stand there at your truck or somebody's coming. Somebody's coming. And you'd have a conversation. Now that what in a million cameras and TV everywhere and all that stuff. So it was different. But yeah, it's just a different time, man. It's a different, it's a different. It's the age of participation ribbons. You know that. Look, Mike Tyson warned us. He said a lot of people forgot once I get punched in the mouth and that dude on the airplane found out. But apparently it's not trickle back over. We want to hear from you, make sure you pick up the phone call in one 8 four four NASCAR NBC. Can you dial that many numbers? Okay. But I think everybody else's will. We're going to go to the phones. I have not heard this voice in a while. It's time for our bunny NASCAR. Glad to be talking about getting the gang back together, good to be talking to you. You guys, why do we keep doing this? This is the NASCAR Cup series. You guys said it if you drive like this, just be ready to take it back. That's how it goes. This is racing. It's not going to stop. So let's cut the crap. That's how it is. He didn't do nothing wrong. But DJ and KP. Now, what do you do mentally though? I have to have the film out of you. And you have to drive every week when you're getting that carbon. How does that go for it? Mentally now, knowing that it's going to come in any moment. How do you separate that store to your job, but yet no, what's coming on the horizon? Yeah. Good question. I'll say this about Ross and some things that I read and heard that he said he was talking to himself after each of these incidents and he couldn't even get past the next lap. When they went back to green. So Ross is going to have a tough time getting to that point. If you think that he's going to slow down and not be aggressive anymore, I think you're wrong because he can't even listen to him. And I get it. But he's saying was honest. How do you get back to their, I think there is, there's more to just in trying to become a champion and a race winner, which he has done very well, but there's more to become a champion than just being able to drive the hell out of a race car which he can do and does it very well, but you got to think through some of these things. And so I don't know. Listen, but I will say this. I'll say about this.

"They have been really good of at least corralling the two people and putting them together in a truck. Between races. Between races. Yeah. And they need to be doing it here. Now, are they? I don't know. You know what I mean? That's above my pay grade. You know what I mean? But before they go on the racetrack at Sonoma or whatever the wherever we go from here or racetrack where they think there is retribution, then I think you gotta, I think the sanctioning body that's part of being a sanctioning body is to get these people together because they've done it in the past and it's fort and they need to do it again. So forgive me for taking 30 minutes to get to the fantastic finish that we had, but let's talk about the fantastic finish between Joey Logano and Kyle Busch. You referenced it already Kyle that much different from what we saw at Darlington earlier this year where Joey felt that William Byron had unfairly passed him and he just knocked Byron aside at Darlington to get that win. In this case, we saw I thought some really impressive back and forth, slide jobs, crossovers, and Joey Logano emerges as the winner. And I had forgotten. I had to Google to remember the Logano Kyle Busch history here. Vegas 2017 was where Kyle Busch took a swing at Joey. Yeah. And 5 years later, it's cool that they seem to have reached this point of having this newfound respect for each other. And Logano said after the race that Kyle and I have raced each other for a long time now and yeah, I even think back to when we raced the Xfinity cars and before I moved up the cup, we were racing each other for wins a lot earlier in my career and to still do that today. It's pretty cool, right? Kyle's one of the best in the sport and I knew it was going to be a slugfest right there to the end and to be able to have Blaney behind me. He gave me the push. That was what I needed. To be able to have position down in the one, he knew the slide job was coming. He knows me. Pretty well. And he crossed me back and then I kind of figured it was coming back at me after if I'm willing to do it, he's going to be willing to do it. And so I just kind of saw it coming across the back. It was able to clear my two three car lengths off of four to take the white flag and that was kind of the deciding factor. If we came off that corner side by side, still I don't know what the finish would have looked like, but once I was able to clear them two, three car lights, I felt like, okay, just normal lap here, and I'll be all right. When I think of the history here, I'm a little bit surprised that we're here based on, I mean, I guess Kyle Busch has a history with everybody. I guess Joey Logano then it does too. But they clearly have reached some common ground here where they can race like this for the win on the final lap and not have it go awry the way it does with other guys. I think they both, it's a funny thing. And I read some of joy's joy stuff that Dustin sent out. Yeah. About you have a book on that guy. Right, right. You know what I mean? And we talk about that a lot. Having a book, understanding how someone races, understanding what to expect when you look in the mirror and you see that car. And I think it's fascinating that joy acknowledges that their book goes way back, way back. It's not just a cup book. It's a truck. It's an Xfinity. It goes way back. But I think what you get is the same thing that we've seen and I will put it this way to you. The same way we've seen and prior decades of what a real rivalry is. Is they might not like each other, but they respect each other. And I think we saw that on the racetrack yesterday with those two guys, they respected each other, they gave each other space. I mean, Kyle, Kyle didn't have to race that way. Joey didn't have to race that way. We know they're both willing to lane. They're both willing to push the limits. But they gave each other room. I mean, they actually gave each other room to get sideways and catch it and come back and I slipped, you catch up, you slip, I catch up one of those things. And that was if we go back, that's more reminiscent of me for me. Of some of Earnhardt and rusty. Earnhardt and Daryl, Richard Petty, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, whoever you want to of some of our greatest drivers in the history of the sport. Racing and racing. Racing. And rubbing 8 racing, it's racing, okay? You know what I mean? No matter what you say. So I think for me, that was, it was a classic finish. On a racetrack that people really had looked at and talked about and said, what kind of race are we going to have here? Can we pass with these cars? And I think in those last two or three laps, a lot of questions were answered about the car, but how people would race. And you know what? I got to give credit to the 12 of Blaney and the 45 of Kurt Busch. There were opportunities they might could have stuck it up in there. And it might have changed the game a little bit. But they were on edge too. And they slipped just enough that it separated and let those two. But in those first couple of laps, I mean, they could have been a factor also, but it was a good, good thing. Is a classic NASCAR finish. Very classic. And it was a nice way to put a period on a day, again, like as you said, had some optics that weren't quite as good for NASCAR to have two champions show, hey, this is the way you race it out at the end of a race. And also interesting Kyle that the top two finishers at gateway have a lot of history in inaugural races. Kyle Busch won the inaugural at Kentucky 2011, Joey Logano won the first Bristol dirt race. He won the coliseum at the clash earlier this year, and now he wins gateway. And Pagano was asked about it, he said. Sports, he won Bristol dirt, he won the coliseum. He went here. What is it with you and first time cup races at tracks? Beats me. I don't know. Like I said earlier, I think he's just kind of being able to adapt quickly as a race team. I don't think it's just me. You know, I think all of us as a race team, we were able to call the right strategies, adapt to restarts quickly, understand what lanes are going to move, where the tracks go and how to adjust on the car, all those things are new. And I don't know, I enjoy the challenge. It's fun. But honestly, this weekend, we were just fast. And we unloaded fast. Like I said, for not having much data, we unloaded quick and just karma fast this week. So any thoughts on that any reason why I think Joey's so good and Kyle too, but Joey, especially has been so good at racetracks that are new. They're exceptional drivers. They are just excited. They are exceptional drivers. Listen, I think if you Joey Logano just turned out 30, 37, 37. I think if you look, if you take Joey's 30, 31, if you take Kyle Busch up to 31 and lay his record, cup record, and Joey Logano's and Kyle Busch is the same. They're going to be pretty close. They're going to be pretty close in winds are going to be pretty close in top 5. They're going to be pretty close and top down. That Joey's not off running trucks and Xfinity races, Timmy in towns. But just take those cup races. I think the thing is, those two guys thrive on just throw me in the parking lot and let you run a race. And I'll beat you. You know what I mean? I mean, they do. They take pride in that. Kyle Busch won an outro, I said it before. Kyle Busch won the first race in the car tomorrow. That's right. And the CO2 when we had it at risk..

"Lillard carrying the once again that straight ahead. SportsCenter all night, ESPN radio that ESPN app Sirius XM Channel 80. Keselowski's in Life turns him food Team Penske Cars crash. Kozlowski is up in a ball of flame up into the outside wall. He'll take Kyle Busch with him. Everybody now racing off the quarter in a horrific crash on the final lap of the Daytona five. Brand. The winner off the 63rd running of the Daytona 500 is indeed Michael McDowell. They can go ahead and celebrate. Now it will be a victory by mere inches. Mick Doubt wins the Daytona 500 would sounded on the motor racing network. Michael McDowell now has 13 top 10 finishes in his career four top fives. And he increases his number of wins to one. His first victory in 358 career starts and joining me now on the Goodyear Hotline, Right. McGee, ESPN senior writer, of course, the co host of Marty and Maggie Ryan, Michael McDonald takes the checkered Seems like we're always talking about the big one. There were a couple during this race 1 15 laps in and then that fiery crash on the final lap in the final corner as they raced for the finish line, Right. How did you digest that finish as they raised to the checkered It's just what this race is. Now, you know the way you think about the greatest finish in the history of NASCAR was at this racetrack in 1976, and it was David Pearson the Richard Petty and direct off of Turn four, and we're sliding across the finish line one in the grass. And everybody was like, you know, that's incredible. It'll never happen again. Not happens every year. Just when we hit the last laugh. I mean, I think about when Austin Dillon wanted just a few years ago last year, people forget this about Ryan Newman's big crash. He was leading the race. When he was fun just short of the finish line. So this is just what this race is to the point that Joey Logano, who was in the lead and obviously was not in the league for is over with. I was literally just in Victor Lang with Michael McDowell. Interviewing Michael McDowell for SportsCenter and Joe with a gun who came into victory Lane and hugged out. It was like no hard feelings, and I understand bright kids lost. He doesn't feel that way. Some of the other guys don't but the guy who had the lead Came to see the guy who won the race and congratulate him. And so I think people just know the driver. Certainly. No, This is just what the Daytona 500 is now, and it's been like this for 10 years, so it shouldn't surprise anyone and you talked about hard racing. And I mean the classic finishes like Like what you mentioned, You know, that's just great stuff to watch. Because I was going to say Is this good for NASCAR bad for NASCAR, But when you look back on history Clearly from what you're saying. This is good. Wow, It's entertaining. Um, you know, I think that it's old school fans. My not dig it so much. But, you know, the younger crowd does in the video game crowd does and this is just listen. Oh, all sports fans want is to not know who's gonna win the game until right at the end. And that's certainly with this race has become, and as a result, they're gonna be years when a Michael McDowell who for years and years and years was scraping the absolute bottom of this sport, just to stay in the sport, And as you mentioned 358 starts Without a win until tonight, And now he's one of the biggest race that there is my favorite part of the interview. We just did for SportsCenter without so what do you say Michael went down to people who are home right now. Going who in the world was Michael McDowell? He said. I agree with him. Oh, just been one of those nights. A lot of people heading to Google after the Daytona 500 SportsCenter all night ESPN radio. He's Ryan McGee. I'm J. Reynolds should point out that you know, we lot of the fans enjoy the racing at the end, and it's It's good that we're at a point, especially with all the discussion we're gonna have this week about 20 years ago, when Dale Earnhardt that we're at the point this week that The drivers can walk away from these types of Rex and I know we'll be talking about that a lot more this week, But you mentioned Richard Petty, you know, seven wins the Daytona Cale Yarborough's got four. Jeff Gordon among the group at three. Denny Hamlin has three. He was going for a third straight. He finished fifth. I believe correct how it's dad. He was in that last scramble, that's for sure. And it's not easy to win three. How hard is that? This was the 63rd Daytona 500. And no one has ever won three in a row on blast year again standing in Victory Lane. I was talking to Denny Hamlin, and he grew up like a loving the history of the sport like I did. And Danny, who I've known for a long time. He looked at me and he goes. What's the group? And I was like the back to back Daytona 500 winners, he said. Yeah, I go well, I said. Now It's Sterling Marlin, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and you and he just started laughing. And he said How many of 13 and Ross It's nine. And the answer to that question is still knowing that's how difficult it is. Richard Petty had a chance to tell you, Barbara had a chance some of the greatest names in the history of sport. I've had a chance. No, no, I've done it and and Denny Hamlin got bitten by a little bit of pit strategy. Tonight He was the dominant car let more than half the laps in the race won the first two stages of the race. And unfortunately, the Toyota's got outnumbered at the end, and he didn't have enough help to get to the front. We also had a high profile debut at Daytona Ryan this week, but bubble Wallace and the number 23 Car co owned by Michael Jordan. Yes, that Michael Jordan for those who don't know We've had. We've had high profile owners before. What makes it different this time. Well, it's Michael. I mean, that's the different pit bulls here to pit bull was was Grand marshal race because he's now coming out of it Seems we have pitbull on Michael Jordan at the Daytona 500. I've been around doing this. This is my 26. It's almost three weeks. So I've been to a lot of press conferences where a lot of really famous people have announced they were investing in race teams. I mean, everybody from Brett Farve to Roger Stall back to the Wayans brothers, and it never sticks. But with Michael I get the feeling that he's gonna make it stick and listen. He grew up a NASCAR fan a lot. People don't realize that he grew up in Eastern North Carolina like idea going to Rockingham in Darlington in Charlotte, he came down with his father, James. Jordan was a huge NASCAR fan. And so he was excited to be here. And I can tell you this Him walking around the racetrack today. In fact, all week long, it's been. I think I saw Michael Bygones. I think it's all Michael to golf course. I think it's all Michael at dinner, and he absolutely was on most of the golf courses this week, came.

"Just have you know Melissa and all the kids here is just great Joe and his whole family. Everything they've done for my career and bring them back to victory. Lane again is just amazing. Hamlin became the fourth driver in NASCAR history to score consecutive Daytona 500 victories. Richard Petty was the first to do so. With back to back wins and 1973 and 74. I've broken Buddy Baker Watch to the garage. Richard Petty wins the Daytona 500. The first man I ever wanted. Four times a 2nd 1974 NASCAR Grand National Championship stock car races history. The winner of the 16th annual Daytona 500 is Richard Petty. He drove the whole running away in his red and blue STP special. Cale Yarborough did it in 1983 and 84. They come to strike. It will be Cale Yarborough. The Winter Bill Elliott will finish second horrible pulling away. Here comes the charge from Turn four. Can anybody do anything? Kale is gone. He'll win the day. 500 with the battle is for second right now, As Earnhardt squeezes past Darrell Waltrip in Sterling Marlin accomplished the feat in 1994 and 95. Sterling's got a car length and a half trying to put a dream behind him. He will win his first Winston Cup race. He tried since 1976 and Sterling Marlin has won the Daytona 500 his first Winston Cup victory. Earnhardt, two car lengths behind here They come to the checkered flag late Daytona 500 Sterling Marlin in command. Sterling Marlin will take the middle groove right through the trial. Will Earnhardt is not close enough to make a move. Sterling Marlin is a repeat winner of the Daytona 500. But in 2021 Denny Hamlin has the opportunity to put himself in a class of his own. Win the Daytona 500 for the third year in a row and become the first driver in NASCAR history to do so. Hamlet's chances are strong the last two seasons. He's proven he still got what it takes to win. Scoring six wins in 2019 and seven in 2020 win would also give him his fourth Daytona 500 victory. In total, He would tie Cale Yarborough with that number and would trail only Richard Petty, who won the Great American race a record seven times. I'm the odd man out there. I don't belong I don't belong with any of those guys names those air Legends of our sport, obviously, Hall of Famers and they just lose the guys that you learn from. I'm just a student. Those guys the teachers, whether they root for card number 11 or not. NASCAR fans will be waiting to see if Denny Hamlin can accomplish something No one else has with a third consecutive Daytona 500 victories. Marines Kurt Becker, and he's right. Whether you liked any or not. Everybody is going to be watching today to see if he can get that victory. It's not every day a driver has the opportunity to do something that no one has ever done before in the sport, and Denny is the on Lee driver in the last six tries to win the Daytona 500 After leading the most laps he did it last year. And back in 2016, all right. When we return, we'll go down to the starting grid and hear from some of your favorite drivers and later Rusty Wallace's keys to the race. But first let's pause 10 seconds now for station identification on the motor racing network. Tom Tolbert, Steve Kerr Friends for Life dubs forever. "Of sports from Bloomberg Radio. Well, thank you so much for joining us. We're here each and every week for you. At the same time, Talk to the biggest names in sports of Jason Kelly. Along with Mike Lynch and Michael Barr, a revved up Michael Bar. I should say, Let's continue our conversation with NASCAR President Steve Phelps. So, Steve, you know we've talked about A little bit about fans of guess where to talk a little bit more about that later on, But I also want to talk to you about sponsors and sort of the conversations with them over the course of 2020 and getting into 2021. It's a different product in some ways. And yet it's not so different. So so one of those conversations about Our approach from a sponsor standpoint, Jason was we wanted to make sure that we were flexible as we could. So we want to make sure that Have a sponsor felt that they got full value that we would ask for them for the full amount of the sponsorship if they felt because they couldn't do hospitality, or They were compromised in some way with what the delivery Woz because of the covert restrictions. And we would have conversations with him about that, too. We did the same thing on the fan side. We want to make sure that the fans are sponsors. Everyone feels good about how they were treated by NASCAR. So when opens up again, and we're able to have full grandstands and hospitality and different things that We had before garage access pit road access, and they're excited about where things are. What I would say is because we had such a fantastic year. Our ratings were better, frankly than any other major sport. The 1970 Daytona 500. That's the one that Pete Hamilton one and I'm like. Oh, my God. Look at these cars. They're going ABC back then didn't do flag, the flag coverage. They they went in live and then came back out. It wasn't until 1979 when CBS went flag, the flag coverage and that turned the entire sport around because they had the Finnish upon finishes with Cale Yarborough and Donny Allison and Richard Petty wound up winning the race. Bring this up because how has the sport evolved since that moment when NASCAR was changed on the map forever? Yeah, that's all. He was an important part in the history of this sport. Michael, that you bring up you know, he had a massive snowstorm of the East Coast North East. Specifically, you had your first Ever flag the flag coverage. He had a big wreck in a fight that breaks out. It was great drama that kind of propelled the sport to a different place. You fast forward to where we are Now, things look much different, right Broadcast television looks a lot different than it did that And you have all these different other options streaming and cable and All these services that are there because that's where people want to be right. So Consumers consume sports differently than they did in 1979. And we need to make sure that we are doing the same right. We want to make sure that we meet that fan whether it's an avid fan or casual fan or a potential fan where they are On Ben. The promise that we are making to our fans is that we're going to give you great racing. Seed. In addition to covert 19 last year, you had a number of other hurdles she had to deal with Social justice. Awareness of black lives matter in the Confederate flag issue. Do you see a smoother path this year? With those issues, having gone through it and learned a little bit in the off season. Good news for us is that we had a stage in early to mid June. You know, after the death of George Floyd And we need you to do something. We thought it was important for our sport and frankly for the country to do something, And so that moment we had the drivers had done a video, which was fantastic. Really talking about listening and learning and educating, and I did a thing over the P a to our industry and end to the Fox audience that talked about listening, learning doing better. Shortly thereafter, we ban the Confederate flag at all of our facilities, NASCAR racetracks not just the ones that we own, but any track that we raised no Confederate flags. And then we had the Internet with bubble Wallace and Talladega with the news. That was an important part in the history of NASCAR. And I think it showed a lot of people that we are different than you think we are. So those that are in this sport know who we are right that we're not a bunch of Racists. Go to the racetrack. That's that's not who we are. We are a community that is welcoming and inclusive. We had to show the nation that that's who we were, and that's what we did. And so for us not just early June, but what we have done the rest of the year in the areas of social justice and also in diversity equity inclusion. We're a sport of action, and we're going to continue down the path of being more welcoming, inclusive, and that's exactly what we're doing. Says we head into 2021 with Michael Jordan is as an owner and pitbull as an owner. And million's frankly of new fans, younger, more diverse fans. That's who we are, but we need to keep the action that we promised that we were going to do so One of the things we had said we're going to do is that we're gonna train in the tire industry. In sensitivity and unconscious bias training, which is exactly what we did so every person that is going to be working This weekend at the Daytona 500 has been trained in sensitivity and unconscious bias. That's important for our sport. We have to make sure that we are a sport of action in this space were and continue this conversation with NASCAR President Steve Felt so stay tuned. Straight ahead on Bloomberg Business of Sports. In the meantime, I'm Jason Kelly, finally on Twitter at Jason Kelly News,.
