Global Cruise Trips Return With Some Mandating Fully-Vaccinated Passengers

"Chips are on the move in Europe, as we hear from Elizabeth Palmer in England. When the Iona sailed into Southampton two weeks ago, she made quite the splash. 5000 passengers will board later this summer for her maiden cruise to Scotland with captain Wesley Dunlop in command. How lucky am I to be at the helm for it? I cannot wait. Challenging that optimism are the floating nightmares from last spring. Remember the San damn turned away from country after country with a deadly covert outbreak on board? Or the 2.5 1000 people who spent their dream vacation in quarantine on the diamond Princess in Japan. Simon Calder is a travel writer. It's a huge PR challenge the people who are most acceptable to covet 19. Older travelers are the absolute prime demographic for the cruise industry. Is Krejci Still a Viable Player for the Bruins?

"Krejci is still going to be David krejci this year. He's still going to have to change plan. A forty Fifty Point Pace over a full season still be good. Still dragged along, whoever whatever Wing is he's got, but you have Charlie Coyle. Who's getting paid like a top-six guy, would you expect him to make that jump up? You expect Jackson eager to really crack through and, you know, people who thought he was going to be up like The Calder or what-have-you or at the very least, be a guy that was going to flash a lot of practice that you could see him getting a full-time job. Next year, obviously that has not panned out either a guide for both coil and Sydney, so I think you look at this team and it's subject. Forecast years from now, what to expect from his team. But you look at the way they're playing right now and the piece that they have in place. It's not out of their own possibility to think that if you co-sign crazy and and Hall again and get a lot of these pieces back, you could run it back with the same group for another year or, or to even and still be a pretty viable Contender just the way they're playing off. So I think that's the only option that brings really have at this point is bringing back David krejci. Now granted

"Back to I untraveled. It's 43 minutes after the hour. Peter Greenberg here with us Ion travel continues from my bunker in New York. But we're gonna go across the pond because what a crazy couple of weeks it's been trying to figure out The United Kingdom. And travel there and what people can do or not do. Quarantine rules keep changing new strains of the virus being reported and a lockdown. In the UK has so many other ramifications in terms of global travel. Who better to report on that than our good pal from the independent in London? Simon Calder. How are you, sir? Peter. I'm as confused as you are about pretty much everything, but I'll do my best to help you through this extraordinary sequence of events that we've been going through here while you've been going through some pretty extraordinary things there as well. Yes. Uh, But, you know, when Boris Johnson announces another lock down the economic impact of that, not to mention what it means in terms of the number of cases that you're having. I mean it Z getting well, scary. It certainly is. I mean, the good news is that the UK is ahead of or it began vaccinating people ahead of the rest of the world. Whether or not that is going to start feeding through at last to some kind of economic recovery, and Recovery for the travel industry. It's a bit early to tell. But as you say, cases going through the roof, a lot of clamor here as they're has beans, actually since last March for there to be better controls on people coming into the UK because it's um Quite wait. We're quite out of step with lots of other countries. There is no pre testing when you get here. You're just told Peter. Okay, go and sit in the hotel for two weeks on. But when I did I got I gotta ask you something. For people listening to our show right now, if I got on a plane tonight. Flew to London landed Heathrow. Would have to go and sit in a hotel and not leave that room for two weeks. Effectively. Yes, I mean, Cody. There's hardly anybody flying between the U. S and the UK at the moment, but that would be the basic plan. However, it has a fatal floor, which a number of people have pointed out. Which is it? When you go to somewhere like Australia or New Zealand, where they really serious about quarantine, and indeed some of the Asian countries, they will actually put you put a guard on your door effectively to stop you strain whereas in the UK there, sir. Nothing other than well after five days. If you take a test for Corona virus, then you will be able to leave your self isolation for five days. But there's certainly no no testing or anything except that finally, finally, a couple of days ago, we got to hear that there would be mandatory covert 19 testing. It's as though they've got this cunning plan, but they just haven't worked out what it is yet. So I said, What was it going to start even a range of possibilities? What of the penalties if an airline is not going to Can't carry somebody who they shouldn't carry. What happens to all these people returning Brits who test positive what? What's gonna happen to them and they're just gonna be left behind on It really does. Look, the phrase we have here is like making a chapel as they go along. Well, here's my question. We're talking about the UK, but now it's defined the UK other rules the same in Ireland on the same in Scotland of the salmon. You know, I don't know. Tell me. No, they're not on. That's that's all part of the problem is well. These decisions are made by the four U. K nations. That's England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They're different from the rules in the Republic of Ireland, but Over on the island of Ireland. There's no actual physical border between Northern Ireland and the republic. So given that you could also traveled between England, Wales and Scotland. The fact that the the rules don't match makes it Very difficult for people to know what's happening. And my the only silver lining in this dreadful, dreadful business. Peter is that so few people are traveling that it doesn't really affect that many people. The fact that It is utter utter disarray, but it doesn't doesn't bode well for when we hopefully get that much needed recovery. So if I okay, I understand now by fly to London tonight. This is what I'm gonna have to do at this moment. Of course of the change. But if I take a test five days later, Good look. Good news, Aiken. Gonna walk out of my hotel? What happens tomorrow? What happens in Ireland? Okay, Well, I was hoping you wouldn't ask me that because they've got a similar thing and forgive me. I haven't fully researched what happens there because one reason is in my defense. We're in this lockdown where I'm not even I. There's a very, very few reasons I can't even leave my home. That one is to go on exercise. So, basically unrestricted too, As far as I can walk or cycle for my Roman, hold onto that thought for a second. We're gonna take a quick break. We come back, We'll try to navigate.

"You are am thanks chuck. Simon bobby newman to jose. Santos junior really appreciate all of them taking some time to give their thoughts and memories about calder gulfstream park west as it comes to its final. Week my buddy gave pruitt. I believe is going to be called. The last few days gave did a double header on On sunday at do the the gulfstream park west papua double header but pete showed up and And bailed him out a little bit gave him a couple race break. That's lottery says to call it a day. I know i i. I realized that it's not like a hard job in the sense of like difficulty in Labor and stuff like that man. I'd be exhausted after day. Called twenty raises. I do sixteen louisiana once but it was quarter horses. So they're only out there for fifteen seconds like you don't have that two minute adrenaline rush and then crash and the two minutes adrenaline rushes crash in sixteen times but i really appreciate them Got a lot of good emails and messages on twitter with people sharing their memories of the track and And as i said i wrote a blog actually wrote it a couple of days ago. But i didn't want to publish it till we are getting close to doing this particular. Show just kinda my memories of gulfstream park west and i've talked about it a fair bit on the show and so i won't go into as much detail here As as i did in the piece but just it really became a special place for me for a lot of reasons. A lot of them. Not racing related just you know. Kind of personal journey Life related. But you know i you know i. I live about as far in the continental. Us from miami. As you can get in fact. I would guess probably is about as farming seattle miami literally polar opposite sides of the country and on their forget making that dr peter yellow call i as i wrote the blog piece. You know he message me on twitter and asked if i was interested in it was still like two months before i actually would have had to go down there. He was trying to get his vacation schedule sorted out and i just i had that whole summer of two thousand eighteen. I had been practicing the mantra of. I gotta say yes. I gotta say yes to things. I gotta go do things. Because i was doing more things and i was feeling better. I mean my anxiety was still there but it was like it was just so empowering to go back and do things again because i had spent so many years running for my anxiety just hiding at home and i remember i went down to vegas and i interviewed inside the pylons i to him prior to that and he had you know had said. Hey what you come on my show for an interview and he said you know what we're gonna do it. Let's let's do it. We'll do it in person will do it a couple of days you know you can do. And so we did the the two interviews that you can still hear over america and i went to dinner with him dink and the beast and then the next morning i drove out like bright and early in drove through arizona. New mexico stopped in god. When i stop somewhere north texas on the panhandle. Amarillo think it was amarillo. Is that up on the panhandle And then drove jackson mississippi. The second daddy. And i didn't tell me people like i told my mom and my girlfriend You know travis and frank and maybe one or two other people but really. I kind of kept quiet. Because i'll be honest with yet. I had had so many years of of flaking out because of my anxiety issues. That i didn't i didn't wanna like be proud and tell everybody. Hey i'm going to do this. Cool thing because i think in the back of my mind i was still worried. Like what if i crap out until do it and then i get there and it's so.

"She was the dam of songbird. A few years later after after racing calder On the male side big drama ran that called her before anything of course. He won the breeders cup. Sprint smile was based at called her. He won the breeders cup smith. Holy bowl random called or a whole bunch enforce multiple grade one winner. I got the call lost in the who was a brilliant sprinter mainly out on the west coast but he but he took his show on the road. Chris s rooney began her career at called her. She of course wanna breeders cup. Spend a buck ran. I think three or four times at called her To start his career and mutual macho man actually was trained by bill white at called her for the first two three starts of his career. I remember there was a little chunk of time. They are wear like a two year. Old would run it. Because i know i've heard it's not as much anymore where it used to be kind of a deep tiring track and a lot of traitors would look for good two year olds there because they figured if they would run well a call that they could really run well somewhere else. I remember jerry hall. Indoor for claimed or privately purchased a bunch of them like that he did. I think he'd be blind luck. Yeah walk and and we kind of the good and the bad of it was as much as we were. Fans of the horses called her. We knew if there was a two year old that was super impressive in their first or second started their career There was a very good chance that we would not see them at called her anymore. Because the fact of the matter was the person california new york and and places like that were bigger and the races were a little more prestigious and the folks would big money would come in especially if these horses were dominant in these two year. Old races are called or had a had a big ragavan sheet number. Let's say and they go for you know hundreds of thousands of dollars and we'd see them showing up Other parts of the country and running very very well when you. When you went there phil saltzman was was still the announcer. There was kind of known that you would replace him when he eventually did retire. Or did you take the analyst job strictly to be the analyst and you know the cards eventually fell. how did i think it was both. I took the analyst job in nineteen ninety nine because hot shrub was the analyst. Yeah and he was hired. He was hired away by tv g. Who was just starting up at the time. So i was hired to be the analyst with the theory that you know whenever it is phil solving decides to retire and there was no set time limit. that they knew that i would be there and plus at least they'd have as a backup. If bill ever needed a day off he'd been sick or something like that. Phil ended up calling for another six years. After i got there and then he decided to retire and unfortunately just passed away a few years ago. But they'll fill was as much a part of calder. Is anybody else who was last time. You went out to to call her. I went out there at the end of last meet when they had The gulfstream west. I try to go once or twice. Each of these gulfstream west meet. I have not been out this meat because to be honest father the pandemic bell. You can't i mean you know. I certainly know the right people that i probably get out there once if i really wanted to i don't want to cause any problems and As much as i love going there so much different now and it's really been so much different these last four or five years and that's not that's not saying anything negative about you know one side or the other. It's just you know that the deal that they have to run their now and ending. This meat is something that i don't think either side really wants to have and it's just that's the way it was and one side needs to run there in order to keep their casino going year round and the other side needs to run their to fulfill an agreement that they signed back in two thousand fourteen so It's sad that that it's going to go. But i understand why it has to have them. I was saying earlier. That i like i feel like i never got to experience called her. I only got to experience through park west. Because i don't think they're the same thing no and you being an announcer would really appreciate this. The announcer's booth at calder. The actual one that was in the grandstand called her up on the sixth floor was v. Best announcers booth. I've been in in of any of them. And i've been in. You know twenty five dollars. An ounce for not only was a cute where i could have a big tv and two or three small. Tv's and a computer in there to do anything i needed to do. And every different angle of whatever but if it was it was also far enough. It was right on the finish line which you can't say about announcer coupes and it was far enough away from the racetrack. Me on the apron that you didn't really have to lean over to see anything you can just stand there and it was a beautiful panoramic view with you right on the finish line. You just couldn't get a better view at calder. Yeah gp w gotta like hanging yourself out the window. Top of stretch. And i told pete i said the first couple of days i had a sore back because you literally have to convince tort yourself because and plus they're coming right at us so there's no depth of field. I i get a sense. It was maybe a little bit of an easier task. Pack than all you folks were watching the racists from gulfstream west on tv now really detach to take with a grain of salt. You can tell with the with the camera angle because the camera also the the camera shots are not very good because you first of all. You're much lower than you should be both the announcer and the cameraman much lower. Don't have a very good view It it's it's really not the best place for announcer supply their trade so If it's more of just getting through those races i think than than trying to be really really good. How's things unfairly. Has things over the horse racing radio network. They're great buddy really nice people. They're really enjoyed working there. loved the radioside Get to cover. Races live racing three days a week. Wednesday thursday friday. With a guy named anthony beale and then when it's not a pandemic year Get to go all over the country and cover these big races live as they happen whether it's the derby the preakness belmont racing at saratoga. The maryland million of the queen's played You name it we cover it. It's really just a lot of fun. The virginia derby last year. Maybe repeating twenty twenty one while we were planning to do with this year. In fact you know there were. There was a chance at one point where it was looking like. I was going to be going to the to the virginia derby and then sprayed after that headed to churchill downs To cover these derby. The first saturday in september and It went away all of it kind of went away right around the same time but I have never been to colonial..

"It gets to be like thirteen degrees and windy. And it's like okay. I enough jill. Let's go backwards. Warm so check the final weekend of racing in miami gardens. You're still tied to the scene down there. Is there much talk about Dpw's final weekend. Or i know. I know some people still call caller or is it just kind of been so long in the making that folks really doing much about it. You know it kind of been on death row for a long time and. I think that there'd be a lot more to stall and a lot more talk about it if people were actually able to go and then it. It's just a shell of itself. I mean this year without any any fans and and discouraging everyone's going which honestly there's nothing there it's like when you were left there. At least there was some ten some owner hospitality tent and a couple of big tents and they had people going around taking debts. The had a food truck but right. Now there's nothing it's just nothing it's it's sad and it's kind of a bizarre scene and it's it's just It's funny it's going out with such a whimper It's really it kind of doesn't I i guess like again. Because it's it's been kind of on. Death's door for a while and wants to grandstand. Came down then. That was kind of finality to. It's like this is not coming back into it's kind of You know i. It's hard to believe. I mean honestly it's really hard to believe. I was thinking about this yesterday. You know. I really gotta get back over there again. I was over there a couple of weeks ago and just A final remembrance been colder for us. Guys that were on the new york kentucky south florida circuit was kind of a one month. Deal for the most part And we would come down and in december and and When i was working for allen jerkins. I remember you know alan. I worked for him. He was in his early seventies. And i mean amazingly well Kept for a person You know in the seventies that didn't exactly You know like a health nut or anything but We would go down there and you know he used to run like he was a little paranoid like that. He wouldn't be around two months from now so so we just called her and never year invariably we put some horse in the office. Huge favourite in one of those optional claiming races. And i swear every time we got beat and it was always by the horse who was in for tech. It was never another allowance tours. And every time he'd go nuts and then we'd run the horseback at gulfstream and they'd have that race over that coal to track which was really deepak then into it was always a big A big improvement but I remember the first time i was down here. Nineteen eighty nine ninety ninety ninety nine. I can't remember exactly what year but christmas at called her. They used to run it hard on christmas day. And the place was paco. Tact and paddock was too deep. You know the the walking ring and it was a giant crowd. And i mean there's a lot of people down here that are that are jewish or they're they have the day off for on in chinese. Food is a big big thing on christmas day for the people. That aren't aren't catholics. And it was always kind of a. It was always kind of a fun for us coming down because we we didn't run much. I mean what we did once in a while and we'd see all the people we hadn't seen in a while and it was kind of a of a really low key meet you know you've over their shorts and flip flops and a t shirt and you didn't have to get dressed up and and the racing was always good. Always a lot of good two year olds coming out of there and Just with with a nice little track to in that they had. They used to have a barbershop. That had shoeshine guy that had a couple of restaurants and they had the box seats. That were You know was always pretty hot there but it just was a nice little kind of self contained little track tracking. The backside was was always in in in in really immaculate shape and barnes were you go down the row and it was just kind of a little gem and it's just sad to see that You know they go by the wayside because it was a nice track and You know just as a You know it was had. It's own unique characteristics. I think that and you know what were you had so much two year old emphasis And i really believe that that The lack of that has kinda hurt. The florida breeding program. Little bit too in the breeding program in the state of florida is not nearly the size of scope or quality of what it was Even twenty years ago. I mean there's been a lot of freely really good. Florida breads and the program has really shrunk a lot. And i think part of that has to do with the demise of colder and Gulfstream still does run a lot of two euro rate. But but just just a different kind of program than than they used their over there. Talking about the The backside last thing. I'll ask what is how do you think this will affect just kind of the logistics because there's obviously stalls there. There's a lot of people that still train there. And of course there's the two months that they run their. What do you think. South florida racing. How will it affect it. I mean even though it's obviously not a a massive change. It's still a change. Well there's about four hundred stalls there and and they're pretty much full mostly it it. It's hard knocking claiming pike courses over. That are stabled over there. There's not a lot of fancy outfits Mostly guys that run which which is which is important to in those. Are the you know the people that could fill the cards especially the the wednesday thursday crowded undercard races and some of them will rely lee. Locate the gulfstream I think there'd be consideration tamp- the tampa palmetto for building Some barnes up there so by me by next summer that they should be ready. And i it. It's hard to say exactly how they're going to fit this schedule in. They have a plan Of reducing it seems like a the numbers about twenty days off of what the important right. Now listen we're only running forty days five days a week there.

"It's november the twenty four th and. It was one year ago today. That i called my final race at gulfstream park west which we're gonna talk all about gulfstream park west more about called her on this show a little bit of a calder tribute as it's a real. It's the final week of racing there. As far as i know sometimes with the stuff i mean good. Lord how long did we did. We say goodbye to suffolk downs. In fact i remember being at suffolk. I went there. I was there for closing weekend at suffolk. The last two days they ever raced. I was there and i remember i. I'm very good friends with jessica cat who who was kind of the i mean basically ran the joint at that point and i remember like hanging out with her throughout those couple of days and she was busy working but every few braces that we'd run into each other and talk and i remember she would get she was getting barraged with. Are you sure this is the last time like people were like. She was like yes. She was even saying that like with the marketing materials. Like you know yes. We know we've said this is it. It's like the rolling stones right like they're always on their final going away to her but Sounds like that is the case for for calder. Race course and gulfstream park west. We should maybe we should just call the race track in miami gardens and we'll talk with a trainer. Check simon who worked down. There he worked for allan jerkins who race down there. Some gets memories from him. We'll talk to the longtime track announcer. Bobby newman he was there for eleven. Years is the race collar and obviously worked there. A few years is the analyst before that we'll get some Calder memories from him. And then jose santos junior gonna join us. Of course the son of the jockey. Jose santos current jocky agent. Who's killing it out there all throughout the midwest and we'll talk with him because he grew going there and i always. I mentioned this to jose. I i always feel like you know the tracks that we we grow up going to. At least this has been my experience. those ones are a lot harder to say goodbye to because it's like your youth and it's your childhood and it's all those memories and it's win. The sport like seemed the biggest. It seem to you. You know you're going to you're going to be three foot tall looking up at at these massive creatures with little tiny guys on them who are about the same size issue and like just staring at wonder as they speed by you and you know for me long acres. Is that way like i drive by there and i just not in the pit of my stomach and you know when portland closed. I was sad. Because i had so many years. Invested there so many memories. Good and bad there and you know when when hollywood park closes. it's for me. It's sad and it sucks but there's not that emotional connection and so i'm curious to talk to jose and you can get the sense of of what calder meant to him and in his growing up and now his current and future time in the sport really curious to to hear about that So we will be pretty calder centric. I would love to hear your guys as memories if you are a south florida player. I've got a few emails throughout the week of people talking about You know their memories of growing up at going there. So i just i love getting here. Those kind of things Just a quick you know not history thing and a lot of this is just looking through wikipedia and other stuff but called her. I never knew this until i year or two ago. The the guy who started it was named calder. Stephen called her And he wanted. Summertime horse racing in florida and You know they eventually passed a bill allowing it and so they started racing there in nineteen seventy-one may sixth of nineteen seventy-one so almost fifty years ago forty nine years ago. I racing started their William mcknight eventually bought the track of course the stakes race named and is was run there. For for years and years and years churchill eventually bought it and You know they had the festival of the south there. Florida millions the summit of speed kind of became the The premier event their horses that ran at Cajun beat orientate. Lost in the fog. Ran there in the At the summit of speed. Emma bovery who was an emerald downs horse That was got really really good and one the madison at keeneland. And then the went down in one the the princess rooney stakes. I remember everybody at emerald was so excited to see that because it was like. Hey we're we're taking on the girls and Winning if you remember called june fourth two thousand five eighty. Castro set the north american record for most wins in a day nine races. He won on a single card. I got to call. Joe crispin writing seven winners. I think that's the most i've ever gotten to call Yeah i mean just a a lot of memories for. I think a lot of people. A lot of people got their start there of course. Todd rep was Know i don't want to say gotta start but certainly was that prominent there right before going to tv. Gee we'll talk with bobby a little bit about that. Cayton radar work. There ron nicoletti and of course. Now all the crew. That's that's down there in south florida. Doing a great job but a lot of jockeys to and we'll talk with jose about that. Who you know really went on to make huge huge names in the world of racing either started at calder or spent significant time there and one crazy story that i saw the wikipedia page was in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight. A jockey. Nicotine navarro nick. Navarro was killed by a direct lightning strike after the second race at calder. That day It was They're getting john roberts's quoted as saying it caller. I had jockey. Nick navarra work for me. He was one of the good guys He wouldn't hold horses them. You know basically since the great thing about him very skilled Data today he goes on one day in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven. But i think it was seventy eight I walked up to him after we finished. He put his hand up to wave. There was a powerful explosion aboard. Lightning came out of the sky and hit him and then they canceled the rest of the car. But i mean that's an insane story and It's one of the things with race. Tracks is good bad sadder different. They all have their stories and the stories. Don't die with the race track when it gets shut down and You know the stories live on the memories live on. They obviously fade the further. We get away from them but I i like to. I was the reason i wanted to do. The show was to talk about. You know what. I think was pretty cool. Track into have some folks on here who had special to and i'll talk about my personal attachments to it a little bit later on but because my attachments are gulfstream park west and in and i published a blog on my website. Jcp dot com About that and i'll talk a little bit more about that in case you don't want to go read it. You can hear me talk about it. We'll do that after we talked to the guests but You know. I think people have their memories of these places and you know where where people who are fans of the game. We work in the game where horse players and all that kind of stuff. And you know these are places that mean things to to a lot of us And obviously like you said for folks who've never been there never live down there probably not as much as for people who grew up going to it but I i like to share those. Because you know the the physical being that has called her and gulfstream park west is you know is not long for the world and as a race track with parimutuel racing. It comes to an end this weekend so We will talk more about it Check simon going to join us. I than bobby newman. Jose santos junior. And then i'll talk a little bit more. The end of the show are our tributes to call her and gp w here. The speed horse racing podcasts. More coming up.

"And they opted for Congressman Roger. Marshall who represents basically the Western two thirds of the state. He beat out Chris Co Bach you might remember that name Kovac is an immigration hard. Liner, who helped advise president trump, Kobuk lost a governor's race two years ago and Republicans were worried that if he were the Republican nominee for the Senate seat that that might be in jeopardy and as the map is expanding and beginning to favor Democrats more and more the idea of putting another seat in in competition is not something that Republicans wanted to do. So they got their candidate, their preferred candidate Roger Marshall beating a close. And trump in Chris back in Missouri voters opted to expand Medicaid by a narrow margin but they voted for it anyway and in a fascinating congressional district out in Saint Louis, a black lives matter activist named Corey Bush beat in a sitting Congressman William Lacy Clay Lacy Clay and his father have represented his district for about half a century and the idea that now that a progressive activist has come and beat him is a real surprise. It's on par with Alexandria. K Zero Cortez, beating Joe Crowley a couple of years ago, and some of the other progressive challenges we've seen. Be Successful this year. So a couple of pretty fascinating results right there, and then in my home state of Washington No terribly huge surprises. But Congressman Denny Heck I. Think this is a bit notable is a rising star in Congress a member of the Intelligence Committee. He decided to retire this year and he is running instead for Lieutenant Governor which is a race that a lot of people don't pay a lot of attention to, but it's not lost on anybody that if Joe Biden becomes President Jay Inslee the governor of Washington may be asked to take on a prominent role on climate change his signature issue in a Biden administration and then maybe Denny Heck becomes governor I've got to check in on my home state of Michigan we see there So in Michigan, the biggest raises were it not terribly competitive there's GonNa be a Senate race in November neither Republican nor the democratic nominees faced any real opposition. The one notable race came in in Detroit itself where Connor Rashida, she's a member of the squad as they call that group of Young Progressive Women activists who are members of Congress now she. Won Her primary by very, fairly comfortable margin over Brenda Jones who was a longtime city official that was a rematch of two years ago when to barely held off Brenda Jones this time around it was a pretty convincing result what about the pandemic and its impact on voting? We heard some real horror stories this primary season how successful was the rollout yesterday? So things look like they went relatively smooth yesterday I will say there have been some reports about people in Michigan specifically, not getting their absentee ballots or absentee about applications on time that raises more questions about whether or not. The Postal Service is equipped to handle what we're going to see in in terms of a massive surge of interest in in mail in voting one statistic just to sort of shine a light on how likely we are to see that surge. To four years ago in Minnesota about just to statistics couple of minutes ago about twenty five, thousand people requested absentee ballots in their primary in two thousand eighteen. Thousand requested ballots in their primary and this year ten days before the primary more than five hundred, fifty, thousand people have already requested absentee ballots, ten times the previous records that tells you that more and more people are turning to vote by mail just to avoid this virus. Well, speaking of the virus understand you're currently in Washington state, but just seen a huge surge cases in the last few weeks. Tell us what's going on there. So I'm in a small area called Okinawan county basically, the north cascades, the heart of Apple Picking, Territory Apples Cherries peaches. And the the wine of course that Washington state is known for, and there's this really stark dichotomy here between a small towns like twist and Winthrop, which are basically vacation home vacation places where people from Seattle and the west side of the mountains. There are very, very few cases in these small communities where people from Seattle flock every weekend. There are very wealthy, very white, and we're just not seeing a lot of cases here just on the other side of the county in a small town called brewster. We've seen a huge surge in cases. There were four hundred or so in the last week, that's effectively one percent of the entire county that has tested positive for this virus in just the last week brewster is a an apple picking area and the virus is spreading pretty rapidly among migrant workers. So that's a real challenge that's state officials are having to deal with how do you deal with workers who are in very tightly packed dorms? How do you keep them safe? We're catching up with read Wilson National Correspondent for the hill I'm Jen white while hear more from you and read in a moment..

Chicago Blackhawks’ Dominik Kubalik named Calder Trophy finalist

"A record the podcast this week. We've seen some of the awards. Come down the pike. Including today's news that the calder trophy and Jack Adams award finalists are Quinn Hughes. Kelman, car and Dominic Kwalik for the caller and John Tortorella Bruce Cassidy and Elaine. For the Jack? Adams. Mike sold without a Jack Adams finalist. Kinda weird. He must not be nice to those broadcasters that given the time of day after skates something. A little, gruff or something, because honestly the thing about it. Is that like I? Don't know who kick out. For that. I'm really happy. Happy. Jesus I'm really happy. Cassidy made it I'm really happy. Cassidy made it because I feel like this award overlooks guys. That coach really good teams a lot. Yeah I think he's deserving of it, but I mean like. Tortorella did a great job in Wien. Yo You could point to and say there are tangible improvements. The flyers made under his watch I guess it might be. Even you know the guy you kick out for Sullivan, but I just I don't know Sullivan a really good job. This year I just wish I could have gotten into the top three.

Exploring Hungary

Exploring Hungary

"Let's start out today's travel. With Rick Steves with a little old world charm in Hungary when travelling in Europe. You just have to include the great cities on your itinerary. Hungry elegant capital of Budapest is certainly impressive. But there's another side that you should explore as well and that's the country's smaller towns and cities historic Acre is an easy and popular sidetrip northeast of Budapest. It's been attracting travelers from Eastern Europe. As a place to catch your breath surrounded by the opulent architecture of Hungary to introduce us to the scene. And we're joined by Hungarian tour guides. Monica Poche and George. Farkas thank you. Did I get that right in Budapest? If you're looking for a little break you head up to egger very much. So yes how far away is it and what it would take about. Maybe an hour and ten minutes done in a highway and then on the secondary roads. And then you find yourself in gear Third Drain Connection. There is yes you will have to switch. That's one of the reasons why is not as cosmopolitan as it should be? Because when the train tracks were planned they didn't make a direct connection initially so That's a little bit of a of a downside of it but there's a great bus connection as well so Monica when you were growing up in Budapest. Did your family ever go to Edgar together? Yes actually not just with our family but I remember that During school trips during the communist era we were taken to Edgar Edgar was the seat of the archbishop pre so it has fantastic beautiful churches by the way would like to tell you during the communist era because of the nine hundred fifty six revolution aft-r in Hungary all of the churches are considered to be museums. Saw it ever also well capped? That's even during the communists. They are as squid children. We were taken to the Churches Museums. But not as living places of worship. The church survived physically. But it's a historic place Museum rather than a place of worship joining a community standard harmonised. Okay well it was very much controlled control. Why let's just turn around a little bit and say why Edgar would be the number one destination for Hungarians visit because it's part of the curriculum because that's where biggest victory happened. Hi this is Turkey Turkish time because they talk about. That was the last place to be taken in by the Turks of they go all the way thirteen. Nine thousand Turks are coming over and two thousand Gillian's actually locked themselves up. In the castle women children as early and they go and defeat the Turks. So that's the victory talk about. That's why all children are taken and they are taught. We don't talk about the fact that the send away the defeated Turks. A couple of months later turned around and came back into the town. But that's something we talk about. Obviously that's that's not really something won your battle fifteen fifty two so nearly five hundred years ago. The castle is still there and you can visit the Castle Castle. You even as a tourist. You get a sense. This is really important to the Hungarian much so very much. And my memory of Egor is a minaret and it must be the most northern minaret from the Ottoman Empire sticking up right there in the middle of this city yet. It's like a spaceship. There cannot send has no contracts they just sitting there is under go in a major restoration and so rather interesting Just recently they Reinstated the culpa. Praia a month later. They put it on their huge reconstruction was built for the the man who sings the calder calling. For prayer he actually climb up. The spirit is what about two hundred steps all the way to the top right and then he would get that acoustical benefit of being a top of everybody and to this day while they might not climb up there five times a day. Tourist can climb up there. Yes it's a tight little climb. Yes but it's a good view from there and also the reason it's important to mention because although Hungary was under the Turkish Ottoman invasion in a fifteenth century. They majorly converted existing buildings into minarets or they converted the Roman Catholic churches into mosques. They didn't be too many things. They've built these mirrors that we have. I think maybe two or three in our whole country for the minaret would just decorate a pre existing building that became a mosque. Is that what you're only by? They will buy. It's very rare to see anything from the Fifteenth Century Turkish Ottoman era. But that minaret is one of a kind of it. Gary Tour Guides. George Farkas said Monica Poche telling US why the town of Edgar Northern Hungary is one of the country's most popular getaways right now on travel with Rick. Steves something I remember from Edgar is. The market is just a wonderful market. George can you take us on a little walk? If you have some American friends with you and you want to introduce the culture. What would you find in the market at Egger? That gives us an insight into the salt of their Hungarian cuisine. And it's a great experience. Actually it's a a living market and you still see the ones that actually just went out in the morning and they went to see what's there to sell and they come onto their tunnel is stalls and then they sell day or individual small quantity backyard. I remember that it's like my little card table. And there's a hardscrabble old farmer husband and wife and they've got their turnips potatoes and they kind of looked like their produce very much so yeah so you can get that type of thing and then and then you continue on and then you start to see. The beautifully presented larger stalls with Grapes and Peaches and plums and veggies. And all that beautiful presented. The key is to have that relationship with the vendor. So you go and blink and then they know that they know us so you get the nice stuff From the front. I'm you know to really presentable one. And you're not regular year. You have to be aware you might not get what you see. Are you likely to find some of this famous Hungary and Moonshine for sale very much so Pelinka Pelinka because that's fundamentally something It's like GRAPPA? It's very legal. I would say it starts from eighty proof upwards and its shots That's how in the old days those that work out in the field started. They with just to get some energy my hunches. There's these flat little flasks. That people have definitely I I do have one with me. At that moment Hungarians would never leave the country without a Lilla flat flesh of Polanco. We also call it medicine if you have a heartache if you have a little bit of stomach problem because you're abrode no you are not taking. Bapti obese more something as but you immediately get delillo. Hungarian piling cars sanitizer society. Strong believe it or not but there are still destination centers in the country when you have some fruit trees in Hungary. Let's say plum or apricot or whatever you can take your own fruit to these destinations centers. You know it's bio and then Not filled with chemicals and then they make it for you. This bio moonshine exactly. There's actually a reconsidered approach today because In the old days when you went to house of Hungarian Oh you start to the dinner at the venue they will offer you pulling her and now modern culinary understanding. Is that if you offer Pelinka before the meal. You should be assured that the meal is not going to be good because what they say that if you have your Pelinka sort of so strong it kills your taste at your ability to ten. Then you don't taste the food so now pulling Kush should actually be digested. I suppose to Pera tiff. So if you are a host and you respect what you've cooked you want people to appreciate it you're not gonNA hide it by giving then you offered as before

Who's the Champ?

"Bobby? A halt of the New York hot list is our first guest of two thousand twenty here on the gate now. The horse that won the Breeders Cup dirt bile beating Omaha beach is spun to run and he will be facing Omaha beach again in the Pegasus World Cup. The first major race of two thousand thousand twenty but maximum security will not be there and code of honor will not be there. Maximum security is waiting for Saudi Arabia. The world's richest race the Saudi Cup in February. It's very tempting to make this a political discussion. I'll only do it to the extent of saying with what's going on in the Middle East right now. How do you think that is going to impact whether trainers bring their horses over for the Saudi Cup and or the Dubai World Cup in March or maybe they take a look at that Pegasus again and say maybe we ought to just stay here that that's a very hard question to answer? Ah It's hard to understand how people feel I will say this. I am confident in saying that the people especially in Dubai. We're ruler of the country behind that I think they're going to bend over backwards to provide security and take care of the park I I would hope the same thing's going to happen in Saudi Arabia race and then just not become a outer tech or anyone but that is a question question that you just can't answer. I think it's very hard. It's an individual decision to a Lotta funny. I understand when people go play a lot of people who have no dog in the adviser to come up with answers of morally questions. And what they're gonNA do when not to you. Gary West was all set to run his voice Independence when it was nine nine billion dollar I. He was happy to take the fourbillion winter. Share the person. Just go to the Middle East but when you cut the first out of nowhere to three billion winter I'll get one point five billion something like that and you have just wants to you know once in a lifetime could easily win ten million dollars and probably turn around that month and win a twelve million dollar right I. It's hard because this is an expensive sport and as much as these people arrested of of money that goes into this so You understand it as of now. I haven't heard anyone saying they're going to change their mind about going. I'm sure people are a little bit nervous but I mean let's be frank. I think anytime you over. There is probably reason to be nervous. So it's just an individual decision and I wouldn't chastize anyone. Whatever they they decide because it feels like them? That's their call. It's not it. I make my own decision on my life. You make your own decision on your own life and I think that's the way it goes. Oh by the way. I think you're under selling the Saudi Cup. I believe the purses twenty million dollars. Well it's ten million the whip you get ten billion but it's it's one that that that's what I'm saying he gary West is looking at it. I will get sent. Don't get out of the home and billion dollars if I say in that term so you can when you look at it now. You basically have to win the Pakistan that in line with at one point I for share of the first compares to the ten million that he will win. Take home for winning the Saudi Cup where he will be the favorite and a one term mounting great definitely. I Dunno betting Saudi Arabia. But I know American pools. He's GonNa behavior and you running for stabbing tons of money. That's a pretty compelling nonetheless in the Pegasus World Cup you do have. Some horses is with some credentials including higher power. The Pacific Classic winner. We mentioned Omaha Beach. roadster for Bob Baffert is aiming toward the Pegasus. And you will be there. How do you see this first? Major race of the year shaping up that force right now in training maximum very doubt after that case to be made then Omaha Aubenas bunch of wrong especially violent eight might be the second and third bout with McKinsey right there with them so when you get fun to run and Omaha Beach I think he got a pretty darn good race. I mean it's interesting possibilities. Are the horses doing nominated at the box He's done. I'm very well. This is of course. A lot of people east might have remembered with Chad Brown Barrasso. And you know he was good you know. He got coming up. In the minor spot that West to John Adler Verona's ray thing all of a sudden. He's winning all these steaks and eat it. You can't east to Churchill even lost or any blocks. We'll see if he's going to be the ones that they decided to send into the race. It'd be a good one back wizar- people know this story. That fifteen thousand dollars who ran against maximum security and the world's most famous Amos. Sixteen Thousand Dollars Eight lamer and it'll be in there. I think it'll be a big competitive fourth. It doesn't I think have the superstar. One runner arrogate powerpoint chrome Omaha beaches in that category But it's interesting. It's good to get back into talking about racing and Bobby Hall. Nobody better to do it with so. Thank you so much barry. Thank you always chat that with you so when we come back here on the gate. The site of the world's first million dollar horse race is short on dollars and short on time time to secure them. Welcome back to win the gate in July of two two thousand. Nearly twenty years ago Churchill. Downs home of the Kentucky Derby purchased Arlington Park in Chicago for nearly seventy one million dollars. Arlington's owner Dick Duchossois had closed the track in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight and nine hundred ninety nine saying that he could not compete with other gambling businesses. The opened again in May may of two thousand presumably with the knowledge that a sale was coming at the time. Churchill was in something of an arms race against the stronach group. When it came to buying up tracts the idea was to create networks of tracks for simulcasting and cross promotion of races and Events in nineteen ninety nine Churchill bought calder race course in Miami and Hollywood Park in California and then bought fairgrounds in New Orleans in two thousand and four? This was meant to counter the STRANA group which began its buying spree in nineteen ninety eight with Santa Anita then they added Gulfstream Park in Florida. Both major Maryland tracks Laurel and PIMLICO as well as golden gate fields and Portland Meadows and Oregon stronach versus Churchill. Wasn't exactly the Cold War. But the battle lines had been drawn it it seemed that Churchill was the first to blink Churchill dumped Hollywood park like a hot potato in two thousand five just six years after buying it. Churchill said at the time that California has forsaken racing and its needs reports came from fairgrounds in two thousand thirteen that the turf course was too dangerous juris to race and that the track had been poorly maintained ever since the churchill purchase at the same time Churchill was trying any maneuvering possible to get out of its obligation obligation to operate racing at calder. Eventually the STRANA coned Gulfstream Park worked out a lease agreement to run the calder meet in October and November this year. Two Thousand Twenty is the final year of Churchill's obligation to lease the meat after which it may convert the track into a shipping logistics center. Or something like that.

"Since then with an upper body injury I had it up until that point twenty eight points in twenty nine games if you're worried about Kelman cars run for the Calder trophy do not worry about it because even now they're all of saying kid I say kid because he's active I shouldn't say that because he was drafted like twenty fourteen buddies just now getting to the NHL I Victor Olson for buffalo I statistically he's kind of the leading guy and we know rookies of the year awards basically go to ever as the best stats well the difference between he and kill my car is basically the time that my car's been out so I expected as long as my car can kinda get back going in start producing like you did before he went down he should re claim that top spot in the Calder trophy race here before too long and also allows everyone in a D. core to kind of get back realign there's just this weird thing right now Bednar going back and forth between Ryan graves in the key does the door off and getting back home a car just kind of slots everyone in quite nicely so good to have him back and this is how the could be something could be nothing realm of possible friend solos will star in goal I could be something because this is the first time since group hours being healthy that friend sos has gotten back to back starts couple that the V. eight national TV game at home division rival arguably your biggest rival in Minnesota could all add up to be mean something about where the two goaltenders are or could be be nothing we'll just trying to wait and see I think it's a little bit of something because as I've been talking about this week since group hours come back friend says it's been the better goalie and in hockey you go with the hot hand and I think that's what your band ours doing tonight but kill my car is back and possible friend sos will be in goal for the avs are covered from out to to to radio begins here in six and a half minutes and then of course the main event of the evening eight fifteen kick off on E. S. P. N. friend of the program Ryan leaf will be on the call he just said announced that needs a couple days ago happy for Ryan to get a call that gain in Air Force washing and stay in that she's a bowl been talking a little bit about that game today but it's played out tonight chance for Air Force to close out the season on the highest of notes of course I will be act old Chicago academy in Austin bluffs that is where the Fishel Air Force watch party is many of you who are here for fans know that that is the place to congregate and tonight is no different I'll be hanging out there are friends from ninety one K. can't fan will be there and a whole bunch of falcon fans will be there so be a lot of fun tonight come out join us and if you can't don't worry Jim Arthur Jesse Kurds will have the call over on our sister station seven forty K. V. O. R. now gets are in action tomorrow Broncos Sunday so yeah from a local perspective those are the two events of the evening unless your a USC fan in Iowa fan because they play later tonight Oklahoma state is plaintext Sanam right now in a bowl game in the Texas bowl so there are some other things going on but we'll be watching as followed by the Air Force falcons our Brady has some thoughts on that for the airforce came just hope Air Force shows up and can't get behind early that I agree with that it's been kind of a a running joke about how Troy Calhoun always differs in how Air Force opponents always seem to drive right down the field and score I'd be interested to see if you deviate from that normal course because it's Washington state but that's been the case many times this year almost every time Air Force wins the toss they differ in their opponent goes right hunt in score hits now overall it hasn't hurt them many but tonight might be a little bit different so I agree can't fall behind by a couple scores against Washington state that's just living to dangerously and of course for a lot of fans B. ball match up with cal if you years ago is still fresh in your mind or it gets brought up when you see that airforce is playing another pac twelve team that wasn't a good game that wasn't fun now I would say that Jared Goff is a better quarterback than Anthony Gordon is so perhaps that means that Air Force will be more in the game but I think that's the base on give us a good game we don't want to see Air Force get blown out because I know that will look since we've been talking today about what a macro view of the Broncos season will be macro view at the Air Force season the blowout loss to Washington state will be kind of a a footnote because we will as you Martha said last hour look at beating see you beating C. U. N. C. S. U. beating army getting ten wins for the first time in three years the season will be remembered for that stuff and I said it when they beat CEO that no matter what happened this season will be remember for beating see you so I agree with that but why not add it to how special this season is banned by knocking off Washington state Grady as national TV ads in trouble too I don't know that they have quite the reputation like the nuggets do but I do remember a few more than a few occasions where ads have played on national TV and and not played well but they're getting back my car they have the better goaltender at least right now in that cell.

"Does that count towards your total? The total at the end of it was seventy five wins. Elizabeth three. Yeah. Not good. She contested that we were framing that incorrectly. But I still alive. Count as my losses. No. She has her own category. Wins. I don't get the losses rights. I accept that. So we will be playing the college of pop culture knowledge coming up today at ten thirty, and then the millennial X games will come up today at eleven thirty which they do every Wednesday, but we couldn't do Elizabeth against each other because we're kind of sort of the same generation. Oh, that's, that's yeah. Yeah. Okay. We'll get ready to lose in the millennial X games for sure. Today, bringing back a little bit of that jersey. A little bit of a bitter that. Sas rask's. Yep. Yep. Yep. Okay. When we come back here on the show. I want to hear this wanna hear the, the meteorologist, I've heard the headline. I haven't heard the audio this meteorologist, I'm on the same page as this guy who just lost his mind, and let viewers of the bachelorette have it because they were complaining when they had to do cut ins for tornado warnings. And apparently, he said the heck with it. I'm just going to lay into them. So we get to hear that audio as he puts viewers of the bachelorette in time out that is coming up next on my talk, one of seven one Lori and Julia. It was really cute Charlotte yelled allow when she saw the creek, Prince William Calder.

Jay Beagle talks about being first player in history to win Kelly Cup, Calder Cup and Stanley Cup

"Feed. With a new career? Goals. See the season pitching. Jani beg scarred. Across there. With more. Seconds. Are you kidding? May actually have the man himself. Jay beagle. The newest member of the Vancouver Canucks. Joining us right now fresh off signing a four year contract. With Parker straddling cutting off the left Vigo Deeks. Assure for TV. I is and Vancouver counseling. Friedman. There's only one player in the history of the game was won the Kelly was on the caller and the Stanley. Is our guest Jean Vigo Juno that might away not for you wear. This was not aware that until until you went last year, Washington capital. That's exactly it. And they said I think game three of the of the finals, and it was something that I never even thought of it. So it's pretty cool. That is great to be answer of good trivia question. A useless. That one is a good answer. And it's a piece of history and first of all welcome the podcast. Thanks so much for having me. It is unique piece of history. And you know, we're seeing more and more Alex Barros real touchstone for this as well. The other players have done it once upon a time, the H L was okay. I'm just gonna put off growing up for a few more years and play hockey and pick up a couple of bucks. But now, more and more. We're seeing players starting at the level up the American League and into the NHL more consistently. I know you're only there briefly. But was your e c h l experience like there was awesome. You know, it really was you know, went to Boise. And I thought it was the NHL really I treated it that way I always have every every league I've gone into. It's my NHL. It's the highest that I've ever played I was playing professional hockey, and obviously a blessing to be there. I was so excited and and didn't take one day for granted. I just remember getting there and seeing that first game as I write I think. Arrived at like six o'clock that night, and we played it seven and I didn't play that game. And I think there's a bench clearing brawl and. It was just an insane game to watch against a rival. It was just really cool to be there. And then to get you know to get in to have that experience in a winner Kelly Cup with them experience. All never forget. And and it's a huge, you know, stepping stone for why I got to play in the NHL. There's probably a ton of Z H L players. Now who watched you win the Stanley Cup last year and became aware of that stat that are sitting there and saying I can do that. Like, I'm going to be that guy. That's my dream. And I'm curious when you were on that path where most of your family and friends supportive of you. Or was there anybody who said Jay, you know, maybe it's time to find something else to do. Yeah. I know they've always been supportive. Yeah. It was always supportive always positive. You know, I never was drafted in any league. So it was one of those things where I just kept playing because I love to play. I really did. I just I love the play hockey. And where was the next place I could play so from college. I I got the opportunity to go to Boise, and it was. It was something that you know, everyone was real positive excited for me. They they, you know, I never looked too far in the future. I always was just, you know, living in the moment. And so no one was ever. Okay. It's not gonna work out for you. You're not that good. So yeah, no, it was always very experienced morbid curiosity because people have asked me if if you hadn't made in media, what would you do? And I always answer. I'd be a lawyer. And I'd be miserable. If you hadn't if you hadn't made in hockey. What would you be doing electronic? Yeah. One of my best friend's father was an electrical. Yeah. Yeah.

"Because it's it's it's Marty Calder C L L any are is very interesting fun entertaining page. Okay. So it's all it's meant to be is Embiid people entertain people in a minute. I treat that like I treat everything else. Okay. To me. Explain this to my son the other day, I said, there's no small things everything matters. I don't care, and I tell people I lecture to you never know who's watching in who's going to see it who's going to hear it, everything matters everything I love it. You know, something that has been a influence that coach Carroll has had on me is there's a phrase that he uses which is everything counts. And there's been a guiding principle like when he and I. Collided in so many ways, you know, as I dunno one, plus one feels like it's eleven not to is that there's been a guiding principle for me prior to that which is that. There's no such thing as a big moment. There's no such thing as a big game a big quarter. There's no such thing as a big play every play has equal value. And when you can figure out how to create a life experience that this moment, the one we're having matters as much as the moment when somebody's on stage in your filming them that there in lies some of the preconditions for mastery and also freedom, right? Because there's a torture on the other side that I'm going to be better on going to be different. I'm going to be something extraordinary. When the lights are on forget about it. You gotta be that now and you have to have for them. Yeah. Okay. I mean, that's without that, you really can't truly express who you what you are who you really are. You know, I'm really loved peach hero percenting all that. I agree. One hundred percent with him that you know, they're all they all count. So here's here's a phrase that I've used a longtime. I'd love for you to respond to it before we get to your other two gems that you're talking about my takeaways is that the way you do. Small things is the way you do. All things love it. Love it because I'm borrow that. Yeah. You can have. Yeah. Mom, things the way. Right. I'm surprised because your advice mom gave you early which was game. Changing you bucked against by the way, you bucked up against a lot of different powerhouses in your profession. So that contrarian inner fight way about yourself seems like different now. Yeah. Now now, I like to soak it in and now, I'm gonna point in my life. I can be selective. So I hear that. And I can so I was going to be part of my nomenclature. That's great saying. Yeah. Isn't that? Right. Yes. You so then it gives us raises our attention to the importance of the small things, and you said it earlier this to me is as important shooting. Mick jagger. It really is in this moment. I will take that as a compliment. Beautiful okay to takeaways that people listening, the maybe you can enhance the quality of their life their wellbeing and potentially even their performance in the craft. What would those takeaways big? I think I've articulated them so far, but just to re-express him. One never give up. Okay. Never give up and these are cliches, but they're all true. If someone knocks you down get up and you'll be better for it. Just keep going always remember that remember that every moment counts. And that if you fail it's because you failed to recognize that every moment counts. Gotta love it mardi. Thank you for welcoming me into your home, pleasure to have you see your worldview, and and hope on well. Yeah. Now beautiful. Thank you, very, much pleasure..
