The 'Hollyweed' Sign
"Hollywood sign is as we know. It means a lot of things to a lot of people. The sign itself has gone through a bit of an identity crisis over the years. The hollywood sign was unveiled in nineteen twenty-three as hollywood land changing to the hollywood sign. We all know and love in nineteen forty nine. Gil Beyda (Comcast Ventures) - Always taking risks
"Hello and welcome. I'm Alex Nick and this is moving up a podcast about secrets to success. Struggles along the way and life in general in the pot Gill Beta from comcast ventures on the pod Gill shares what. He thinks the key to all his successes and then we go deep on his pretty awesome journey. Let's get into it Gil. Thanks so much for being on the Alex. Thanks invited me. Looks like we're GonNa have a good time today. Yeah I mean we've already been bantering going back and forth here. It's always like we have such a conversation. I'm like oh now I don't see anything more. Let me let me hit the red button. I wrote to say oh like we said before. And that's usually how it goes. The listeners. Love that so comcast ventures genesis ventures. We'll get into all your venture capital stuff. You got going on today. But like when I ever venture capitalist I haven't met with one and yet that said Oh I knew I wanted to be a VC. When I was a kid do you is I did not I have a technical background so I love Computers Program Computers Earth Way back in high school and college? I studied computer science and Decided that I wanted to program computers and some of the first ten years of my career was all about Being software engineer for a companies large and small I helped develop l. up a part of the UNIX operating system. So something you know you know really down and dirty and then also Develop applications locations financial branch automation. Applications did did the full stack Then I founded my first company which was an ad Tech Company Company and I was the founder CTO Then that company exited founded another company and then after that second company I had an opportunity to go into venture so it was a series of accidents decisions But I've been in venture for eleven years now and and having a great time so let's let's stay in the early days for a few questions at least where. What is this like equation? Technology this entrepreneurship side of you'd that come from your parents your parents entrepreneurs like do you want to work for a big company yourself like what. What is that inside of you? That kind of pushed you that way. My parents were the consummate entrepreneurs alcohol they neither of them had a college legit education. I'm not even sure whether they graduate high school But a so. They started number of businesses in the in the clothing industry Where they would sell clothing They had stores and all and I worked in those stores and saw a You know at age of Eight nine ten eleven working in the store selling women's clothing and They were very entrepreneurial. They grew their business from from one store to many stores And so was always in my blood and all during in high school and College I was starting a bunch of businesses and of course malt. Most of them failed But was always thinking about it about problems that need to be solved about opportunities markets And you know I remember back in my early days. I I used to keep a list of of ideas of companies that I would start at which I which I advise every entrepreneur to do is just can't keep a running list of of ideas and keep right reprioritising them which ones you think are less possible now or more possible. which ones are you more more or less excited about And funny A while back I. I look back at that list. And this list was from from the eighties and Their ideas on it. I actually think are still good ideas today and I challenge some of viewer. Your listeners may be to To do one of these businesses. A one of them was. I don't even was possible. But it's popcorn that POPs in the shape of an animal so like animal crackers for popcorn now so the margins on popcorn or probably nickel Lord. I but wouldn't you pay extra if the popcorn was in the shape of a zebra elephant or a lion or something that was one of my early ones. Some of them are crazy. Some of them not not so crazy and all But I always knew that I was going to to start a business and So I was just waiting for the right idea. I mean I love hearing about this because speaking of business side ideas starting businesses and all requires practice. It's not like you just have some light bulb moment and it's like i. I didn't think any businesses knife out of my very first one and this is going to be the one I'm GonNa go do and it's like it's a muscle that requires like use use. Yeah I I it you put it perfectly Alex that you have to be practicing you have to be an entrepreneur is not just somebody who starts a company it is somebody who is constantly continuously in that process of starting a company and then one of them actually sticks and you end up doing that for many years. It's also so feeling pain points and maybe maybe it's easier to start off if you don't have the list you've never thought of a business. Just to think of problems takes a long time to drives the airport or wait in line at security or whatever it is right down problems on and you can try to think of business solutions to those problems will. Maybe some. Don't have a solution. Maybe maybe some do I think it's a AH. There's a parallel though an opposite universes between entrepreneur and a comedian a comedian goes through life. Making all these observations of of Oh like a while waiting at the airport or whatever and they turned it into a joke or life. Experience and an entrepreneur makes those same mob's rations but instead of trying to make it funny. They actually try to solve that problem. I like that a lot of great one. Okay so you're this entrepreneurial kid growing up starting stuff left and right you go to college rate. Yes where do you go to college. Cal State Northridge California. My Business Partners to oh great from L. A.. I am from La and the clothing store was in La yes what part of La The clothing store was actually in Inglewood. we lived in La Proper and then eventually moved to Beverly Hills. Oh Great We'll talk about that later. Okay so so you you you gotta see sign and and when you're there you're still you do still have this like entrepreneurial passion because I was like you I was starting businesses left and right growing up and then I went to school and I I said I went to Pennsylvania and now it's like everyone's like I want to be an investment banker an accountant or a consultant on my. Oh there's like these prestigious jobs that society is telling me that I should go get I mean that was my path but in hindsight I was like wash continued starting businesses and your own the biggest dirt farm and by now or something but You get caught up kind of like what all your friends are doing. Did that happen to you. I was don't let any of my kids here this but I was not focussed on school at all. School to me was something that I knew I had to do that. I knew would look good on my resume But it's unless it was fun and interesting. I wasn't super engaged so during high school where I founded and one of my first companies called Mind Games which was A video game for the original Apple Computer so I would spend Days and nights and programming The game and maybe showed up for class maybe didn't and so in high school. My grades were marginal may be. I had a C. or a C. plus average I think in college. Maybe I opt it to A. B. or B. minus But I knew that the grades that was not going to be my taken And I have a lot of respect for those folks who are focused on maximizing their the university experience and I think that's that's super important for me adjust didn't click and so even during high school and and in College I was I was starting companies and probably migraine sufferers. It's I mean I think it's a good testimony so you were able to realize that school is not what I want to be focusing on I want to be focusing these other things because like I kind of feel like I was similar to you. I didn't school but did it anyway because they gave all pressure's it's like oh you need to do this and I should have just been. I mean not should've aminals my path until sure so I'm actually kind of envious of you that you had that south awareness to say. Yeah this is not not really focusing. Nobody has ever asked me what my GPA was not unless your like in the top the commodity And nobody asks you what an anybody's I volunteered it. Because I'm mullahs proud that I actually you know did not get as and BS that. I'm actually a C.. Student and was able to do quite well Um mm-hmm and so for all those people out there who maybe are focused on other things or school isn't their Forte They're still lots of opportunity out for those people

And then you're left with whoever's left. There's a reason why plan b if you don't get planning. It's like think about it like when When you. you go into college. Yeah. K-. You have your top schools that you apply to, and you hope you get into let's say Ivy league or whatever you wanna say, and then you have schools like no Cal. Okay. "We'll ask him who's gonna get that UCLA job at Barnes. UCLA Lum continues to join us. You got any idea? Like, it has been a really a state held secret who gets the UCLA. I mean, there's talks there's rumblings about some big names. And you know, I heard. Or Watson did really well in his interview to me if you can't get a historical name that's bigger than the program that could really change things around. I think for once I need to go roots was someone that can get some the alumni back and really build that UCLA pride back up at the school so desperately needs. It is interesting. Like, look I having been in that position before I can tell you that like part of the sale is like, hey, look recruiting is about telling us story. When is your story? It's a lot easier to tell your tell. And then of course, the bringing back guys instead of having to be told. Hey, this guy played here. Then this guy play here. Then I mean, especially with how many guys I mean, we have UCLA group chat. Whether it's about twenty of us from you know, Charles Oban into Toby Bailey to Baron Davis or Watson, all of us are still very well connected. And that's the disconnect with UCLA. There's no connection with the alumni in the former coaches aren't necessarily around. I know that coach hair is now at Cal State Northridge, but one of Charles rushland lie. He doesn't get on that. He doesn't get on that that group. I'm an old school UCLA guy. All All right. right. Matt math Matt Barnes. Let me here's what I think. The Lakers are have you noticed that have you noticed that all the moves the clippers of me Blake Griffin traded? Chris Paul traded to buys hairs truth. Did anyone see those moves from? Did anyone coming poker room poker face? Correct. And that's generally, the wavy NBA works. When quiet letter was moved to the Toronto Raptors rumors of so here's how I related, and you married, you have kids, you know, how this works. There are times dad where you gotta you gotta sneak out early. And when I say sneak out it sounds sneaky. But I'm just saying you gotta get out of the house early. Go get coffee or go to work. And when the kids are sleep. You can't wake them up and some dads. Just don't have the ability to be ninja dad's. You know, they step on every LEGO they stub their toll. They rattle their keys constantly, right? Like, there's a way to pick up your keys where where instead of doing this and wake somebody up grownups grab them, and you grab the key. And then you have in your hand. The Lakers the guy that's random everything on the way. Making the noise. When they get up in the more like everyone sees them coming. Why is that? Out of loose lips sink ships. Yeah. Think it's there to almost a desperation stage were if they have a good movie wanna tell the world because you know, they didn't do a very good job last season..

"All right basketball fans. Well, we promised you that we were going to celebrate black history month along with everyone else to Regan I obviously are very passionate about our black history. And what it means to us and what it's meant to the game of basketball into sport in general. And so we do have to Rockstars on the podcast. And right now, we are getting ready to have a conversation with Ed Nisha curry who is an assistant coach for main men's basketball. Welcome to the show at Nisha. Thank you. Thank you very much. Now, you realize that I said men 's in that way because I was trying to put emphasis on that. Because you aren't making a little bit of history right now, we'll significant history as you are the only woman currently serving as a full time assistant coach in NCAA division ones, MS basketball. Congratulations to you. Thank you very much. Really? Appreciate that. I wish it wasn't such. A big deal. Right. Like, I wish that this was something that happened were often. We actually had a podcast recently with Tara VanDerveer. That's what it was. We were talking about the numbers and the percentages of opportunities available to women in coaching on the women's side. And then women coaching on the men's side at the end of the day. There just aren't enough women and coaching. But tell us about how this opportunity with the Maine's men's basketball team came along for you. Honestly, I you know, it was built upon a relationship that I had currently had had with coach Richard bearing serving as his player development and scout fist in for the main women's basketball program. And when coach Barron took a leave an absence for health, I decided to walk away from women's basketball. It was had been something that was tugging at my heart. Whether I even wanted to continue coaching. College basketball. And I always felt like there was a greater purpose for me to serve. And I didn't quite know what it was. So in my time, you know, I spend a lotta time in prayer and continue to study the game. And that's when I started reaching out to the NBA, and I got into the NBA assistant coaches program. And when I got in the program, I felt at home I felt like my purpose was to be a men's basketball coach, and that's kind of how my journey started. And when coach Barron got hired here at main at congratulated him through a tech. And the next day. He offered me a job. And now here, and so that came along with kind of what you had already been feeling, and I'm curious about that because you have a great history and and with women's basketball. I mean, both as a player you started at Cal State Northridge, then you went on to Oregon you played pro in the WNBA you played pro overseas, so one it went into the decision of thinking that you were just kind of done with the women's side of things. It wasn't. You know, I always try to tell people it's not like about women and men and me coaching women and men I just felt like with my skill set. I wanted to be in a position to impact more people in power more people. And that's what I see this position here at being an assistant coach for the university of Maine. I mean, it's it's been awesome for me. But the best thing about it is only emails the letters that texts that I received from young girls all around the world. Now, telling me, they have the courage because they see me on this platform. And when I think about what I was feeling when I was trying to decide should I just walk away from coaching what part of coaching do. I wanna be in. It's come full circle too. I think that this is where I was supposed to be at the begin. Inning. And I just didn't start here..

"It's I think it's kind of like a keep the machines going. I think if you stop and go elimitate couple months, I think it might be hard to gear back. I wouldn't even know how to me, it's it's like breathing. And this is what I do for you though has tended. Maybe it's different once in a while. But generally, what comes first music or lurks who's who's the famous got Sammy what Sammy Cahn he had an answer to that. It's not the same as my answer someone else Semicon that he goes the check. Like a famous story. The for me, it's sometimes it's title. Sometimes it's sitting at a keyboard, piano, or keyboards or guitar playing a chord progression. It's never lyrics. I know. I wouldn't even know how to write a whole era can do music, totally true. Because I've heard of heard stories that you would be at a restaurant, and here's somebody talking about something and that's spring boarding. Yes. That's title. And that's an idea for. I wouldn't sit and write a whole era and then music to I wouldn't even know how to do. So yet all here's someone say something, and you know, that's that's a song title or someone friends going through really hard time. And I tell him more, you're not even listening. What I'm saying you care about your saw. And I knew I really care about you told me, so what did you feeling? And then when I finished it, what am I from my friend Reza playing like she went through this really horrible break-up. And I was getting ideas for the song. So so she was choosing the room. I played for crying, and I go. Oh, great. It's great that I'm crying Gono the songs working. She was cool. She got. So we've talked about the fact that I guess Ghostbusters last dragon by this point in the mid eighties. You're starting to write songs Pacific -ly for movies and is writing a song for movie different than writing song. Generally. Do you need to see the movie? I you need to know where they want to use your song movie. I could just hear the like I could see the movie I could read the script. I could see I did something recently were or the director was just telling me, I didn't even read the script. He was explaining it so beautifully, and I just got the whole picture of. I wrote a great song from that. From what he told me about it. Here's an interesting thing. When I was at Cal State Northridge. I wasn't really music may almost like a film major because I kept taking all these movie classes, you know, why? To do anything see movies, but you probably through us most I say that I think by sitting in that back from always in the back. So I could like Jutland job things down. I think by osmosis by seeing that I think I really did get an education in film. Yeah. I mean, but so if some of your songs are used in a dramatic point in a movie some of them are end credits when you're working on it. You don't need to know where they want to use it now. I just get inspired. Okay. You hope they use an it, you know. And sometimes they don't these at the end, how often do they specifically tell you how they want to use it like, hey, we we're gonna have I know that certain movies. They'll say like this is going to be after somebody dies specific unless unless I know it's just gonna be the end song or something. But then even then you just hope that will. And I always try talking. Can you get it in there too? So keep putting score to you know, at which does sometimes up like. Yeah. I love that was so subliminal Marcus Miller to really beautiful score with that will. So I would like to take a trip down memory lane. If we can and go through a lot of these hits or and or important songs that came along the way, so it's gonna go chronologically. So I'll setup each one. Let's start with nothing's gonna stop us now for mannequin the movie in nineteen eighty seven performed by Jefferson starship, your first song to reach number one on the billboard US and UK charts and the first of these ten Oscar nominations the song from a movie about a guy fucking. Yes. Oscar nominations start. Compose that one with the movies about right woke sure..

He's not the best be can't be the best player on a team. That's not what you want. And that is it turns out. Maybe that's not the worst thing. Well, I don't know they have done in the white Kansas kicked her asked to start to season two. I mean, I know it ended up being a close game the kind of fought back. But like, I don't know we were in person for that one. It was I was at that game and just like out at Kansas. They looked so outmatch against Kansas. And then it's like both teams have done a complete one eighty since that game yet or two season they peaked too early as they like to say in the business. I think Duke played their best game against Kentucky at that. Kansas will play their best game against Michigan state, and they opened that was the champions classic. So maybe they thought that was the title game. That's what it was a little bit confusion there with other champ to champions is that I mean, I think I think we covered it all I mean, I'm I'm looking around. I I don't see anything else. I gotta say one thing. What do you got sick? Oh, say la- mean Deandra thirty five are boy from Cal State Northridge on. Yeah. They lost in overtime. But I just want to say good for him. What what team does Rick Pitino coach for fuck? I tend to ca- populist rent. That's pretty good. That checks out. That's close. Yeah. Pretty much like if you said that too. All right Patino fan checks enough. Some games to watch. And then we'll get out of here Tate. Saint John's Villanova on Tuesday seventy stern Fox Sports one interesting game. Yes. Very interesting leash yet. Ponds verse quantity Johns. Yes. Saint John's still fighting the process Saint John's still fighting for my attention. I pop in every so often I watched a little bit edgy show. And there are a lot. There's a lot of action going on it could watch the whole Georgetown game. I was watching a little bit of it though. So this would be a huge step in the right direction. If they go to Villanova onto the last three national titles. I know it's not the same Villanova team. But Saint John's goes in there, they win you physically have my attention. Saint john's. That's my problem. I'm gonna watch this game. And if you win you officially have my attention moving forward, also the rivalry. That's not a rivalry Tate. Carolina at NC state, your thoughts very quickly on what's expected this game. NC state favored by two at home. So that's interesting. Just to point out the Vegas knows that NC states probably gonna win this game. And then you get Marco Johnson. And you got torn door and Kyle's original cows guy torn Doorns Beller miles plays football at Carolina torn and his dad played football Carolina's. Well, they know Carolina. They're tough. They press. They do everything that Kentucky does and they are going to be. We all up in the face of Kobe and all those guys. So I would say if I had to guess, I would say NC state wins that game. Because again, we both know Kevin cases a winner. That is true. Kevin cates. I I don't know about Kevin Keats. But I know he's a winner. Yes. Exactly. And he will win. And he knows I think he is probably the the NC state team. If you look at teams, you wanna bet like an outside team that could maybe make a run the turnament NC state in Virginia Tech or two teams where I don't think anybody wants to play those teams because they play hard..

You graduated Cal State Northridge journalism program in two thousand thirteen moved to Bakersfield, you're there on probably a two year contracts three year contract yet to and you leave after a year and a half. Yeah. Give or take to go to Denver NBC affiliate jump big jump Bakersfield to Denver God. I love my Katie was saying Denver if you're ever in Denver will turn on channel nine and they'll take area. But yeah, no, it was it was a good opportunity, and I got lucky, and I learned a lot from a lot of good people there and I talked with Jo Kwon yesterday. And I and I think you're of that same ilk. If you're a storyteller, you're always going to have a job, and you are mazing storyteller. Anybody has a chance to work in somebody? Find your real, by the way. Jay guns reporter, if you Enzi reporter Jay gones report YouTube seriously, amazing storyteller so year and a half in Bakersfield year and a half in Denver. And then you get the call from KABC, and I couldn't resist. Thank you. Todd Macari for giving me this incredible opportunity. And I've been so grateful ever since this was a station. I watched growing up not far from here. Erin, I can see the parking lot where I used to watch the studios old NBC here in Burbank. I grew up here in Burbank, and my parents would take me to Johnny Carson parks have couple blocks from here. And we watch the NBC four chopper at that time back in the nineties. It would take off from the parking lot. And as a kid. That's like the coolest thing ever. Right. See the chopper take off over the years. And and so that was special and so being able to come back not only to to LA, but to Burbank and work from my hometown station, the one I watched growing up something I don't take for granted we talked last segment about book ends what happened to the beginning of the year. What happened at the end of the year? Let's talk some bookings here because your kid watching the helicopter take off from the channel four studios. And then something happened today that when you posted on Instagram, I was I'd. In the comments. I'm not lying when I when I captioned it right commented. I'm not crying. You're crying. I was so we're out this morning doing a positive story where out promoting our help for the hungry event at any rousers food for less location. We're doing this great thing with you know, where people are donating five or ten dollars when they go grocery shopping and all that money goes to food banks in southern California to help feed people who are hungry this holiday season. It's a wonderful event. And we're in Pasadena and in walks in your colleague and Lincoln Harrison, Cal State Northridge Northridge instructor broadcast and TV newsroom. Yep. And his wife works is rife. Riva Hicks worked at NBC LA for years NBC four. And in fact, she was there when I was an intern, and and he walks in with the says, I have a gift for you. And I was like, okay. And then he shows me this little tiny pin, and it's the lapel pin a lapel pen. And it's the NBC four chopper news chopper four from back in the day. And it's like any says, it's for you. Riva wanted you to have this test is in they're gonna cry too. And I was just floor. And he knows the stories. We video of me somewhere when I was a kid watching the chopper take off. And you know, he's like it comes full circle. The best party says I meant to give it two years ago when you started at NBC four, but she was smart enough. Not to give it to me because I thought I lost it. So since she was up the street live up the street, the the he said, he found it this morning and came and gave it to me. And then you run into Chris ancarlo at the at the barbershop essay, I'm gonna get a haircut mid shift and a couple of hours. And I I see Chris today. I see his hat even recognize him. I seem out in the field, and we both, and I notice has had initially ago ebonic gunnison, Colorado. And he goes, hey, I know you. And I'm like, oh, dude. Come and he tells me he's going to be on your show today. Just had another child. Right. So and then Jane wells, we had on last hours says that you were her internet CNBC way back when two thousand when you were in college of the canyons, still, right? Yeah. It was two thousand nine round. My my first internship was at CNBC LA. We were basically Universal City, which we still are. But we were at city walk up of the hot topic. And Jane wells was awesome reporter along with. Julia Boston, and they were just the sweetest people. And they taught me so much, and Jane, and I have stayed in contact over the years. She's the best isn't she the best? She is absolutely the best. Obviously so good at what she's a pro's pro. And and so kind humble and so willing to reach out, and, you know, not judge me for being inexperienced young. But just reach out and just you know, help me out. She's so cool now, I don't know. I think you posted this yesterday not today. But yesterday your lunch. Yes. That got. Oh, yeah. No. What it was yesterday? Because I said, okay, let's get into this tomorrow night being tonight. You're just having lunch with Fritz Coleman like it's nothing. Like, no big deal. Fritz Coleman he'll he'll hate to say that. I I watched him growing up. They all hate to hear that I to hear that. But I did. I mean, we all did we love is the greatest. So the story goes I walk into the commissary with my pal Carol who works at a marketing department, and I see Fritz and I'm like, he's probably eating so healthy. Should eat like him. He's grabbing like a grilled cheese sandwich killed like ham and cheese. He's got Fredo chips. Hey, he's got the greatest. I'm like, what are you doing? And anyway, he stops. And he goes, hey, I got a table you guys with me. God. God. That's so cool. If you're the he's just the best and sure enough, we we sit down and we chat, and he's been so supportive, and you know, he handed out some compliments, and he's just so kind is just a kind human being he he's been on with Tim Conway junior many times and he's been in studio as well. He's he's absolutely amazing. He's the real deal is is there are a lot of people in this business who. Performers. And so the the person there on the air. They're they're not that person off the air not making any judgments. It's just they they perform, and that's that's what they do. Yes. He is who he is on and off camera. Absolutely one hundred ten percent. He's the one of the kindest individuals you'll ever meet. Now, he's been doing the last couple of weeks. He was on with a couple of weeks ago. Talking about these events about feeding the hungry and the news were out there this morning. That's where Lincoln hooked up with you. Yes. So at any food for less and arouse location in southern California. NBC is partnered with with Ralston food for less doing this help for the hungry event. And again, it's so simple. You grab in Uganda. You're going Ralph's. You're gonna your holiday shopping last minute shopping. You just grab a five or ten dollar box. That money goes directly all of it to food banks in and around southern California. And they actually they're able to really stretch that dollar and purchase about twenty meals just for five bucks for a family in need, and we just met so many generous people the events still going. We're trying to reach four hundred thousand dollars keep in mind. We've already exceeded our goal people have been so kind and generous this holiday season, but we're trying to reach four hundred thousand dollars. You can go in any food for lesser Ralph's through Monday, Christmas Eve and still pick up a box. I'm glad you came in now because starting nine o'clock when it's a partial government shutdown. That's all we can talk about. So I'm glad he came in. We have some positivity left to talk about the voice of a legend in the making Jonathan Gonzales right there NBC four you can catch him during the week. What are the days of the week because now that you're anchoring weekends? So you can catch me on today in LA Wednesday Thursday Friday morning, I've been up so two thirty in the morning. Yeah. We're on from four to seven AM had you on at nine thirty punchy. You saw the coffee I just down. And then and then yeah, you'll catch me on the anchoring the weekends every Saturday and Sunday night. A good night's not not weekend today LA. But you're you're actually doing the nights the nights. Oh, man that that transition. That transition from the mornings during the week to the nighttime mighty won't like this. But I like to sleep in on Saturdays since since for sure I need to. Yeah. There's there's actually working this shift with with and I do the drop offs during the week now because that's the twenty minutes that I get to see my girls rather in the week, right? Saturday's my alarm goes off at nine.

"On that later. This is Fritz Coleman with NBC four news right now, it's sixty five in Rancho Santa Margarita. Seventy one in orange at sixty nine in Hollywood and sixty five in Calabasas. We lead local live from the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. I'm Debra Mark. John and Ken show. John kobylt Ken chiampou poets KFI AM, six forty welcome. Everybody. Welcome. Well, we do have some more vagrant stories. Vagrants attack, including one we just became aware of where a homeless woman CD didn't like coffee. Shop was apparently acting really weird and scaring some of the customers, including a little girl apparently happened in Canoga park. Oh spot. Nuts doughnuts. But anyway, the proprietor told her you may be on leave and she threw hot coffee in the woman's face. There's video of this. There is video will play the story from CBS to also coming up, and then a mugshot vagrant to the day is a homeless man apparently was living. It looks like in a storage shed in a park in Santa Ana and had weapons in there. Right. It's only getting worse. A handgun in a six hundred bullets were found inside his tail. We is these keeping tolerant. Yeah. Exactly, right. It's the same thing with the problem of illegal immigration. If you let the numbers multiply the evil doers within them. Those those the ax will rise there'll be more of them because you're tolerant believe being tolerant never lessened a scourge. I would say most homeless people are not going to attack you I'll say that. But if you allow more and more homeless people on the streets and London have mental problems is going to be a tax like this. It's going to be happening more frequently the guy that got shoved in front of the truck. Yeah. Eric leonard. From channel four told us about a report they're doing and twelve and a half percent of all the aggravated assaults in wash Angeles twelve and a half percent or from vagrants. Yep. These are assaults that caused real bodily injury. All right. So there was a real kind of well, I guess some panic to a certain degree at Cal State Northridge the police chiefs name is an P glavin had to hold a late morning news conference today because for the second time in a week. They have found a threat of a mass shooting the week ago. Apparently, it was written on the bathroom wall is really bizarre. And today, it was a note that was left in a classroom in a place called Redwood hall. Both of the notes were threatening violence this one the more current ones said I'm writing this to inform the people of c son that I will kill everyone on the twelfth of December twenty eighteen I'm aware that I will probably be shot and killed. But before that happens, I'm killing as many bleep as I possibly can. Other words for people a bleep, I don't know what the epithet was person who wrote the letter claims that there is a student at Northridge academy high school, which is adjacent to see son who will also carry out a mass shooting and this would be tomorrow. By the way. So says here that the season president put out a message December twelve finals move to alternate exam, formats following new threat on campus. So ever is doing this. Whether it's a student or not. The writer went on to say the teachers and professors spelled with two Fs is spelled wrong. Professors is a tricky word are surely going to bleep die for making students depressed and giving us bleep work that will never service good in life. You bleep are going to bleed to death. That was in the guy can't spell no last Wednesday a shooting threat and a swastika found scrawled in a toilet in a place called Sierra whole mass shooting. Sierra hall, twelve twelve eighteen. Sierra hall is home to the school's psychology department. Well, isn't that appropriate? So we've ever doing this. If it's the same person. I gotta believe it is unless it's a copycat from last week. Clearly, probably that's what people are thinking. They just don't want the final exams to go on they're trying to find a way to pull the plug on. Yes. To know what if this is a real threat, and this is one of the very rare instances where the shooter is being very specific. And what he wants to do. And where and win nearly all the time. They do it without warning. I mean after the fact you notice that they're writing crazy violent things on their social media, but times there were threats on social media, but people don't normally leave vague threats bathroom writing notes, but this one is you know, Sierra hall December twelfth. Yeah. And they want is doing this don't want nobody to be on campus tomorrow when it just happens. That's when the exams are. So where is doing this really wants to? You know, kill the final exam day tomorrow. I'm guessing I I knew somebody whose kid went to a school in L A and one of the kids in the class called in a bomb threat and got the example spawned, but they also tracked down I was going to say today punish them much for that. Or? I don't know. Threats are very they don't fool around with that. Normally, I mean, obviously, if you do it at the airport, it's really going to get real trouble. I don't know what they do with students at schools where they tried to understand. Or I always wondered what happened to kids that do that. And this has got to be more of an adult is this is college when the school well puppets. You know, I don't know what they do in public schools. I mean private schools, they they can toss you out public schools you end up getting transferred to somewhere else where he could. Yeah. Well issue bomb threats. That's the worst had happened to get tossed out. I mean, that's a crime, and you have your juvenile now that goes to this may not be juvenile because it's Cal State Northridge. Now, this wouldn't be if it was the note about the nearby. Cal State Northridge academy high school also said I have kids from NHS that are going to do the same. He's going to give bullies spelled B U L L Y S what they deserve death. Hope y'all are ready to die. Terrible speller this guy. Yes. That's about the third word. He screwed up. And I can see they they put out a copy. It was like written on the memo paper the notebook paper again off. Yeah. They disrespected certain words, I don't know. What those words were whether they were people's names or something like that. But the C son president said this campus will remain open tomorrow and scheduled finals will still take place. Despite the threats. But it sounds like they were gonna move. Maybe I when I read finals moved to alternate exam, formats, whatever that means following new threat. But does that mean new format they're not gonna explain? They don't want this. To another site or another build again. They don't want the crazy person to track them down. So they've found defensive classroom space. Elsewhere. And if it is the same person, we don't even know that we don't we don't know if this is a hoax ter- who's just getting his his laughs doing this. It may not even be a student there. Maybe wandered on campus and thought it'd be funny or no he's gonna make the news. I'll put out a threatening. He's getting a laugh because he's watching the local news, and everyone is very somber faced in serious and causing chaos is enjoying the chaos. I mean, how many will show up tomorrow? I mean, if you got a final exam, I guess it got to show up or else. They're gonna. Yeah. Unless you plead complete panic attack, right? Duress. I think students are given the choice if they don't show up then they can take the final at another time. They don't have to show up tomorrow. Maybe that's what it means. By finals move to alternate exam. Formats. That's probably what that means. What you just said. Yeah, they can find another way to take the final whether they they take it another location or they take another day. I wouldn't show up. You teach. There was an adjunct. Professor. I don't think I would go an adjunct professor is one who doesn't get paid for veganism journalism profession. I did get paid. I wasn't a staff member. Okay. Yeah. That's a good will. Says like you're someone who stood next door perfect. It's called I didn't make up the name and title song. Jason. All right. When we come back when vagrants attack another episode this afternoon. We talked an hour ago about the number of attacks. It appears by the homeless going up in the city of LA, and we have a story out of Canoga park at a Donut. Shop you gotta hear John and Ken show. Debra Mark has a state assemblyman has been arrested on a child abuse charge. Joaquin Aram Bula is a democrat who represents part of Fresno Eve's busted yesterday. A federal judge has ordered corn. "It got very repetitive. But you know, here's the summary because they both just kept repeating themselves over and over. Again, Trump insists here's enough votes to pass the house, but he can't get it in the Senate because that filibuster nonsense and Pelosi saying you'll even going to get it in the house murmur. You don't have the votes for even in the house is this what goes on in private? I mean this. If they meet privately, this is what they sound like or not it's hard to say really did that dinner very early on in Trask presidency. The three of them. And there was all this talk about oh, they agreed to portable funding, and it was a great breakthrough. And I think Trump in Pelosi and Schumer felt embarrassed by some of the word leaked out and just backed away. It was an exchange for those alleged dreamers amnesty. You're right that that was the deal. Well, she said later that she and many other Democrats consider a border wall. Here's the three words immoral ineffective and expensive. Well, they don't they don't care about spending money. So that's ineffective is a total lie ineffective is alive. You talked with border patrol. They'll tell you that any kind of barrier is a help period. The Trump was talking about Israel wherever Israel has a solid border. They have a ninety nine point nine nine percent, effective disarray. And that's what they did in eastern Europe to keep out the Syrian migrants. I think it was hungry. That that put up some kind of fence that blocked off the migrants from getting dogging it works. Absolutely works. When we come back. We'll play. The Senate democrat leader Chuck Schumer jumps into the debates more coming up. This Trump clashing with Pelosi Schumer today on border security really about the fence in an Oval Office meeting. The part the part that she's really fighting for is the immoral part. She finds it morally reprehensible separation of shields. Keeping poor families from coming to a nation of wealth. That's her version of morality, John and Ken KFI. Debra Mark has news. A terror investigation has been opened into a shooting in eastern France that killed four people and hurt at least eight others the shooting in the city of Strasbourg happened near a Christmas market. European parliament member Martina Anderson says she had just left the market when she heard several shots. Look people were shot. Pandemonium? People didn't understand what was happening officials say the shooter has been identified as a person with a criminal record who had been flagged as a suspected extremists some students at Cal State Northridge have started a petition to close the campus tomorrow because of a second threat to shoot up the school is is a very scary time,.

"Campaign. Diane. Shannon. I know this is a heartbreaker. Kathy Lee is out. The today show. People love, Kathy Lee. Seriously. Yes, she was very successful on the program with Regis, and they did pretty well in that ten AM slot where they just drank wine. What a gig what? Yeah. That go to work for an hour, by the way. I don't know if you've seen this yet on on the show, great news on net. Flicks. I have not seen that yet. They make fun of that show. And it's they call it a boy morning wind up. Yeah. W I N E D blind up. Everyone makes fun of that show. But if you can get a gig where are you doing our show where you drink wine of your friends? Make fun of me, all you want J drinking paid for it know, we should turn the last hour of this show into just nothing out drinking at one o'clock. I know you're right. If we if we started the first hour like you could only drink from ten to eleven. Probably how the rest of the day goes in the one o'clock hour, it'd be nap watch our lives, go down the drain. We at the top of the hour. We're going to update you on the C sun situation. The Cal State Northridge they got another threat. But the president of Cal State Northridge spoke just a few minutes ago will actually hear from from her and the police chief about what the plan is for tomorrow. We're talking about the case of Kelsey breath. Twenty nine year old mother of a one year old little baby Afia fiance as well. And police the official line is they're not sure if she ran away or was kidnapped. She has not been seen since she was at a grocery store Thanksgiving Day. Her cell phone has pinged in Idaho where she has family. She did allegedly text her work that she'd need a few days off. But nobody has heard from her. The the weirdest part is what we mentioned just before the break that mom had not heard from her since Thanksgiving Day, basically, but didn't reporter missing until December second, and it was mom that reported her missing, not her fiance. Not the father of her child. So he says he has no idea where she is. And he is at least the claims to have been the last person to see her alive. Yes. And that was when she dropped off their daughter at his home on November twenty second. And then three days later texted him the contents of that text have not been revealed, but the same day her coworkers got that text message from her saying she would not be coming to work the following week. So yesterday, they have a press conference and miles diong the police chief there in woodland park. Colorado is standing alongside Kelsey mother. And Kelsey smother. I played the sound bite for you said she is not like this. She does not disappear. She is very loyal. This is very out of character for her. Who was missing the fiance? Patrick phraseology. And one of the reporters says excuse me. Bob diamond USC television. Chief young. Why is it that fiance? Patrick Frasier is not here at this news conference. Police chief goes. You're gonna have to ask him. So I was at the first press conference after lacy. Peterson went missing. And it was the week after Christmas, and I remember being in that room. And there there were Sharon who is her mom, and she was up there. And it was she was very emotional. And her husband, I believe stood by her or no Lacey's, dad, not her husband. But her Lacey's dad stood there to and the police chief, and I remember seeing Scott Peterson in the room, but he was towards the back and wasn't part of the podium group. Right. I remember thinking that's weird. And I mean, he was watching him walk around, and he was talking to them. But he wasn't one of the guy. He was going to be one of the speakers remember thinking that's weird. Like, if you know you'd think of it. Your husband would be up there pleading. Well, yes, that would seem like the logical thing to do even if you're emotionally distraught. At the thought that something bad has happened to your wife unborn child that you'd want to be up there. But then again, I mean, we saw Chris Watson, Colorado. Also, we saw Chris watts. Come out not that he was at a news conference. I don't think they even. Yeah. I'm for news conference. But he was in front of TV cameras talking about how much he missed his wife and kids and wanted them to come back safely. So I totally agree. But it's not necessarily an indication that anything's wrong. And by the way, we're not saying that Patrick Swayze had anything to do with this. It's just weird. And it's weird the way the police department characterize this. Why isn't the why isn't the fiancee at this news conference, and the police chief goes, I don't know you're gonna have to ask him. And then all why is it that the fiance was not the one who reported her missing? And the police chief says again, I don't know you're going to have to ask him in terms of whether or not the fiance is a suspect all the police chief says is quote at this point. He is the father of Chelsea's daughter. Now when I hear that all I think of is. Oh, yes back. Detectives are watching this guy twenty four hours a day. Police have yet to officially rule her to her disappearance as suspicious they have no evidence they say to indicate anything other than she is a missing person when they searched her home. They found cold cinnamon rolls which had been left out probably too cool. The only thing missing was her purse. You don't leave cinnamon roll, you don't bake cinnamon rolls, and then leave them out to cool and never come back. You don't leave a one year old baby daughter at home never to come back. Now, there is a possibility because we talked about this before she is a flight instructor cinnamon rolls are delicious. She can clearly fly planes. It doesn't take that long to go seven hundred miles. Like, we said her cell paint a few days later in Idaho where she's got relatives. Although relatives are farther away from I think it was Gooding Idaho. Where her her cell phone pinged her relatives are a couple of hundred miles away from there? But maybe you know, maybe she lands and stops for fuel or something like that. If she's in doesn't take any of her luggage. She doesn't take any extra clothes. Give me a break. You think she's some bad happen? Yes. Can I just give a shout out to trader Joe's cinnamon sugar? Muffin recipe. I mean, I didn't make muffins, but I made like, you know, just like the cake form, you don't strike me as Betty Baker. Well, trader Joe's makes it very easy. Just add water in an egg. And then pour it in the thing. But. Delicious. If you're looking for a holiday, treat, trader Joe's cinnamon sugar. Very also make pumpkin cinnamon rolls. Yeah. I've done that too out of a little. Case that goes. Then you throw it in the oven and throw some of that sugar water on top of it. All right. We are going to need your help. When we come back in. Nick was really put off by something that happened to him yesterday on the way home from the dentist. It's this. And I think this is an example of how. How much we doubt humanity? Right. "Obviously you're gonna make plays on once you don't necessarily follow that closely. If you find an opportunity, I mean, I would look tonight at there was the tell south what was loyal. That's a mountain west team. Now, they're you know, they put a lot of points on that board. I think then you just project voile amendments to score more at home. But what happened was the total deflated because they played right here in in the backyard, and they played a low scoring game here in Vegas, but I think at home they're going to score more points. So I think that's a total that that came out too low because it was an over adjustment from the game. That was just played right down the street here. That's an excellent point. I mean, it's such a reactionary market right now because it's inefficient. We're still trying to figure out a lot about these different teams. But just because you have your honoring game at him. Adam. You are I am. So or the odds make everybody's still trying to figure out, you know, and I think you tread lightly in the early stages of this. Yeah. I think so too. But I mean, you know, you get one of those outlier types of finale with a one hundred eleven points. That's not really well, he'll Marymount does. Usually, they usually wind up lighting up. The scoreboard alert Northridge not a very good defensive team. So it makes a whole lot of sense. And you know, again, I think are very important points, and they may be kind of a little bit more general in nature, but they're very important to talk about here of trying to pick off overreactions. And then again that conference or team specialization thing if there's anything our listeners poll out of our early college basketball segments. That's what I want them to take. Because if you try to no two hundred twenty five or two hundred forty teams inside out you're not going to be able to do it. If you try to no twelve teams in the conference twelve teams at another conference in fourteen teams in another. You've got a real decent chance doing that. So I guess probably the most important takeaway here from college basketball standpoint, it let's get some golf here to wrap things up for this segment. And of course, kind of ramping up this portion of the Gulf see. Reason as well. This is the wrap around part of the twenty eighteen nineteen season. The last four points of that here of twenty eighteen you've got tiger versus fill out there in Las Vegas..

"Right, bam, bam, bam, right in a row and a lot of different people think a lot of different things. So what does take Frazier thing? I think Oregon's gonna win, I think, or I think Oregon is the best program in the Pac twelve right now as far as what Dana is doing up there. I really do think they have. I think they have it all kind of figured out and they know who they are. They have an identity than how they wanna play. And I, I mean, how many times can I say it? I'm a big pain Pritchard fan. I just I like I like what he dealt. We love paid. And I think he's going to be great, and now they get bo-bo. Right. That's real. That's happening. So Bulbul the got Louis king. Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm sort of worried about Bulbul. I've all full disclosure. I've never actually watched reason I'm worried about him is because. I'm worried about him in this regard. Like if he's if he's got to be the best player on their team. My fear is that every year with the recruiting rankings, there's always one or two big is in the top fifteen who actually suck. And we find out very quickly that they actually suck. Yeah, and we call them the chase jeeter worry world. Yeah, I'm really words Abobo is going to be that guy. I hope he's not hope he's wrong. I have. I'm basing this off of nothing. I'm just a, I don't know. I've I've, I've seen like the the do guys play, which I guess I guess zion's only they guy, I don't know. I don't know what I'm based off, but I, I'm just I'm just worried that bowl bowl has the potential to to not be great right right away. And I don't want that to happen. I will say this I trust frame for Chila as far as knowing what the hell's going on in these practices with these teams and he's really high on Oregon. So that kinda helps me Philip it better about it. Do you think it's Oregon, or do you think it someone else. I mean, I would agree that like Oregon has the most firepower of pal. UCLA is UCLA's right there with them. Obviously, Chris walks is, is a fan or I'm a huge fan. I think he's, I think he's Pacho. I think he's packing player of the year. Indiana, Mr. basketball, Jalen hands UCLA's is is going to be pretty good. I, you know, I'm absolutely talking myself into them, but I don't know. Dude, like part of me wants to go to Washington because they sent me a Starbucks gift card for twelve dollars. That's right. I totally forever that, and it's all really takes, and it's the real behind zone. You know it, it's the real Syracuse. Yeah, so it makes sense. I, I mean, all in all, I all I really care about as far as west coast. Basketball is at the Martin twins, are both considered for national player of the year as a package deal. I don't want one of them to win it. I won't both them to win it. And I wanted to say Martin twins, and that's that's my best case scenario for west coast basketball because those guys are going to be amazing. They should probably both be in the NBA. But of course the most bus convince him to come back. So I'm excited for that. That's who I think's gonna win the Pac, twelve Nevada. I'm gonna call to say go, yeah, go out on a limb all in on the most bus. Nice. We're very excited. Any other packed while or any other packed while a west coast thoughts in general? Pepperdine. That's all. That's all I gotta say Romar is coming back. You know that we're going to keep an eye on that. Mark. Godfried is out here at Cal State Northridge. He's like hanging out with Jamie FOX at practice. I don't understand what's going on with that, but I'm sure we should probably keep an eye on that. You know, want to go to Cal State Northridge games when I got out to l. absolutely, absolutely. I, I mean, we should. Yeah, anytime I could see Mark, Godfrey, I know try to coach basketball game that that is five star entertainment for me. So yeah, definitely down to do that and ele you..
