The welcome sound to bullpen sessions at the Peoria sports complex. Catcher Cal Raleigh endeared himself to faithful Mariner fans with a home run sending his club into the 2022 American League wild card. Cal's mission is to help the Mariners reach that level and more this season. Hope this team win day in day out. Whatever my role might be, that's what I want to do. You know, the first things first is leading the pitching staff. And I think I definitely took a step forward last year. Seattle's pitching staff is a clear strength. The place I think it shows up most for us is in our bullpen and year after year, the job that this group has done in helping transition players like Paul see you all Andres munoz and now Matt brash. So many impact arms that we've been able to develop in our bullpen and that's been such a key part of our last two seasons. "Finding a way to navigate through this season, you know, make 28 starts coming off a year where you pitched double what you've ever pitched in a professional season before. I think will be big. You know, if he makes 28 starts, that's a really good player. Like with George, I just think it's, hey, you know, be out there for it all. And can you make 28 starts, and can you do those things? And this is a guy that learned how to throw a two seam fastball. Middle of the year and saw Robbie ray do it and say, hey, let me try that. And picked it up and within three weeks was throwing at 97 miles an hour at the front hit up of a left handed hitter and having it dive back onto the plate. And just leaving guys shaking their head like, well, what the hell is this all about? So, I mean, I think that's, you know, a guy that's like, where do you go? You just kind of refine it. You just get a little bit better. Avoid one of the, you know, you're always going to have bad outings, but find ways to maybe work your way out of trouble at times. Say, they don't have all your best stuff or whatever. Can you find your way to get out of it and give the team a productive start? And they're going to still watch his innings and his workload. You know, if he goes out and throws a hundred pitches, one star, the 90 7, you know, the next one might only be 80 or 85, because they want him to monitor that. But I think for him, it's healthy, you know, having a way to combat lefties with that two seamer. I don't know that he'll ever have a great change up, but then again, you never know. Maybe it was just like Robbie ray and Logan Gilbert each fooling around with split finger fastballs, maybe George, Kirby picks up a baseball one day and says, well, I think I'll try a split finger and comes out and it's going to be a plus pitch because like Robbie ray was saying today, that kid is that talented. He can manipulate a baseball so naturally compared to the other guys, like they have to work at it. He just grips it, finds a way he says, what do I want this to do? And then throws it and it does it. I wanted to ask about Gilbert because he obviously had a great season last year. It took a step forward from his rookie campaign. What is the next move for him? What can he do to improve on a three two ERA and a three four 6 5th? Yeah, I mean, I guess Logan does give up some hard contact, you know? He will give up the bomb. I think that's the big thing is maybe just kind of being able to some of the hard contact numbers. His off speed stuff is improving, you know, the extension he gets on his fastball. Otherwise it's kind of straight at times, but I think that's just the big thing is finding ways to limit hard contact is this new split finger that he's toying with and I saw a video of it and looked like a wiffle ball. Does that help do that? Especially against lefties. Lefties lefties find ways, like if they can find ways to stay off the slider or the breaking ball early in counts and just kind of load up on that fastball and cheat it a little bit. They hit them and they hit them hard. Does the split finger off set that? I mean, I think that's the biggest step for him is limiting the hard contact and being able to do that. Because he's a really good pitcher in the moment. You saw what he did late in the season, you know, the game where they clinched against the a's, he was outstanding now. That wasn't the toughest lineup in the world, but he's really good. And I think he's, he's the type of person that will analyze data analyze results, all this kind of stuff. And get better every time out. Now, if you talk to his best friend Cal Raleigh, who's his harshest critic, Cal would be like, oh, he's never good ever, you know, but Cal, that's kind of the whole roommates thing as well. But I think I've been like, we're sitting there talking about what Logan and George could be and they're coming off years that are really good. For me, this group for success is just about being on the field. If they're on the field and they're on the mountain pitching, consistently, and not battling any kind of lingering arm issues or anything like that, then they're a pretty good group altogether. The weakest projected position for the Mariners is left field. And I guess also DH some of the same guys on the depth charts at each of those positions. But it comes back to the Jared Kellen question, right? So what is the outlook for Cal Nick as if that is ever an easy question to answer? And how do you expect the playing time to pan out with Cal Nick and Pollock and other players in that mix? As far as I know, I mean, it's going to be a strait of a platoon as possible and left field. You know, with Pollock starting the games in left when there is a lefty on the mound, you know, and Jared will be out there in the right hand of days and, you know, I would think you'll see Jared as a defensive replacement late in games. And I think if you can do that, if you can just limit Jared to face and righties for right now, and I don't think he has a bad approach or a bad swing against lefties. It's just like a lot of the left he was facing for a while, or just really, really good. What does to it did to him late in the season was kind of borderline cruelty. But yeah, I think we're talking about this today and we were having lunch. And I expect him to be a competent big league player, now is he going to match the hype that he was before? No, I don't see that. You know, even as bad as he was and how often he swung and miss, if you look at the collected of two seasons two abbreviated seasons, I think it's about 500 plate appearances that are still 21 homers and I think 20 doubles. And think about that. He was not put in a situation to succeed at times. He was really, you know, that he faced a lot of lefties early. They played him when he was struggling anybody else in 21. And so I think, you know, if the Mariners do a better job of controlling the scenarios where he's playing, I think he'll find some moderate to decent success and then can build on that. I think the talent is there. You look at everything that he does, he is God all the tools, but it's just the ability to kind of relax himself and play. And understanding the moment, not trying to hit a Grand Slam, when there's nobody on base. You know, how do you handle all that stuff? And then the failure that comes with it, it was like

The January 6th committee is likely to issue its formal subpoena for former president Donald Trump some time this week, but what happens next is still up in the air. ABC's J O'Brien is on the northwest news line and Jay, I understand that Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney is talking about this decision about the subpoena today. Yeah, well, she kind of unpacked a lot of it yesterday in a speech to Harvard's institute of politics. And firstly, on the timeline, she said that they would get to that quote shortly, meaning that they would issue the form of subpoena shortly. So what happened at the end of last week's what is likely the last January 6th committee hearing, as you know, is the committee formally voted to subpoena former president Trump, but they still have to formally issue that subpoena. That again likely to come sometime this week, at least in the near future. Cheney in her remarks said also that the committee members, which was a surprise because there was reporting to the contrary at some point, we're all in agreement about the need to subpoena Trump, same the American people deserve to hear from him. And then she went on to almost on her own without being asked about it. Opine on what the committee would do if the former president chose not to adhere to the subpoena chose to ignore it. She said that we will take whatever necessary steps would happen next. Her exact quote is take the steps we need to take after that end quote. So it's Vegas to what the committee would do how they would react if he again chose to ignore the subpoena, but certainly it's something that Cheney and apparently other committee members have considered. And of course, Trump did issue a statement over the weekend, but the one thing that he didn't say was whether or not he plans to fight it. Yeah, we know that aides to the former president have told ABC News that he's open to the idea of testifying. But if he will go forward, that is an open question, whether he would do so sit in front of the committee under oath, and testify, which is what the subpoena would likely call for. That's obviously an open question. The other thing is that this subpoena Cheney said yesterday, would also request documents as every subpoena most subpoenas that the committees issued has. They say come testify under oath and also produce these documents that we're asking for. So does that become a sticking point with the former president? We know that was a sticking point with Steve Bannon, who said at least publicly said he would testify, but wouldn't produce the documents, et cetera, et cetera. So that's a lot of stuff we're following. Yeah, and speaking of Bannon, I mean, there are a lot of people who have declined subpoenas from the January 6th committee. Are they going to try to force anyone else to testify? Well, we don't know who else they want to publicly subpoena, right? We do know that they still want to carry out the force of the subpoena with Steve Bannon with Peter Navarro, et cetera, et cetera. So Steve Bannon, for instance, obviously was convicted of not adhering to the congressional subpoena. He will be sent in soon. Peter Navarro, that case is ongoing. And we heard it last week's hearing the committee say, look, we will pursue both of those cases because they defied the subpoena and there were criminal referrals from that onwards. Now, what they would do in the case of a former president defying the subpoena, that's anybody's guess. It would have to go to Congress who would vote to hold that person in contempt and then that would refer the case to the Department of Justice. And if Congress voted that way, how the DoJ would respond as somewhat the common phrase today, open question. So we'll have to see. And we'll all be watching ABC's J O'Brien on the northwest news line. The U.S. Supreme Court being asked to block president Joe Biden student debt relief program, a taxpayers group in Wisconsin directed their request to justice Amy Coney Barrett, who is responsible for that region. Another reminder about the importance of sleep. People aged 50 or older who sleep less than 5 hours a night are at a greater risk of chronic health issues. "Just heard big dumper on the broadcast so many times. You know, I just kept talking about big. Just totally normalized. Yeah, and I was like, we've decided that? Yeah. Yeah, we have. But here's what I'll say, you know, speaking of meth, but is now made totally real by virtue of me being a Mariners fan. Do you know what Cal Raleigh's postseason line has been? No. Would you like to? Sure. He's sitting 505 56, 1000 years old, three 42 to be our C plus. I think that's pretty good, you know? Like as these things go, you know, Cal if I could give you a note, like maybe cut down on the case a little bit, but otherwise I think it's pretty please keep doing what you're doing. Yeah. This was the anniversary of ALDS game 5 from 95, right? October 8th, whatever that means. Nice fitting. I guess this has been serious. Yeah, right? Just get it all out right now. Imagine this is probably the second most memorable moment of your Mariners fan lifetime or just like any Mariners fans lifetime potentially. I think that that is true in terms of a collective achievement, which isn't a fair way to characterize it. It's not fair for me to say that Felix is perfect game was an individual achievement because perfect games are always a result of the picture, but also his friends, but yeah, I would say that absent stuff like that, you know, where it's like Felix throwing the perfect game or yeah, Felix during the perfect game. You know, it's definitely it's definitely up there. I don't really have any, I was trying to think about the 2001 postseason. And I don't really have a lot of distinct memories from that, you know? I mean, I remember it happening and I remember watching it, but I don't have like a where were you? And I think that's because sometimes our brains shield us from stuff that sucks, you know? It's fine. You don't have to keep that one tight. You're going to remember awful moments from middle school at 3 a.m., but the really deep trauma we're going to show you from. Right. Boy. Yeah, Tim mesa, not having the greatest past month or so, because he was part of that and then he gave up a big guaranteed home run. So you have to be time to turn the page for him. Yeah, the decision to bring him in and turn Santana around is better side was for sure. Yes, that was curious. That was the, that was strange, you know? That was a weird decision that they made, but it was one that they made. Sure was. And for sure, it sure did backfire on them. Sure did. Real quick, you know? It wasn't great for them. It was great for me. It was great for you, yeah. Congrats. I feel like I haven't done justice to my own experience of this game. I just feel pretty giddy as uptight as you sounded in anticipation of the west time? Let me tell you, I'm so uptight on the day. It was really bad. I was just like, this is the worst thing I've ever seen. This is devastating. They're not gonna win tomorrow. It's all over. Why isn't Logan Gilbert pitching today? They have a perfectly good George Harvey. And then it was fine. And then I was like, oh my God, I have to keep working today. I have to edit stuff because little behind the scenes like Jake filed his guardians raised gamer. We're going to use this as a segue to that guy just decided. And I had edited it once through and then shenanigans started and then I got distracted for like an hour and a half and I was like, oh, I still have to do my job. Sorry, Jake. And Jake, who is a Mariners fan, was like, it's fine. Yeah. That's okay. It's okay. I sent him an all caps like, sorry, I will get back to this now, but was distracted and I think that Jake understood. And thankfully, I think our readers were pretty forgiving of it. It was not Jake's fault, though, in case anyone was like, why didn't that gamer take so long? Totally a Meg problem, not a Jake problem, Jake's the best. Congrats to the voters, can go and sit to the J's glad that the Mariners get to play home games. Potentially, with the two in attendance, is that yeah, maybe? It could be? Well, I wish them continued success. I suppose. Sorry, Blue Jays fed. Sorry it had to be you. I mean, but the thing I'll say to the Blue Jays fans, if they've been annoyed with me, I fully expect that my sad little human heart is gonna get crushed under the shoe of Justin for winter, so yeah. It might be short lived, but even if it is, at least it was intense. Yeah, it was dramatic, so yeah. Yeah. You had the authentic playoff experience. Oh my God. Which is miserable. Yeah, just go back to the drought. Just make it 23 24 years. You don't need to be dramatic. That's my job in this podcast today. Okay. Guardians and race. Speaking of great pitching. Yeah, another sweep here. This went Cleveland's way and I feel like we kind of nailed this in a sense too. We nailed the Shane Bieber is good and José Ramírez is good. Pretty sure we said those things don't know where else you're going to get that kind of analysis and that immediately was borne out by the results in game one, but just generally I think we were not high on the offenses of either of these teams. And it's kind of a chicken in the egg thing, right? It's like, was it the pitching or was it the hitting? Obviously it's always some combination of both. But it's kind of like the unstoppable force met the very movable object. In this case, because you had the great pitching of Bieber and Mackenzie and then on the other side, mcclanahan and glass now and then just the amazing bullpens of both of those teams where you can play 15 innings and whoever is pitching at the end of it will still be throwing a hundred somehow. It's just like an inexhaustible supply of unheard of all dominance bullpen guys and that's after your dominant starters. So you put that together with October weather and everything like you would not have expected these to be high score in games, but I think one reason why we said hey it's good to be able to bop one in October why you want to have a short sequence offense so you don't have to string together a bunch of hits it's because that's really hard to do sometimes really hard to do. That was extremely hard to do in this series and therefore all the runs were scored on home runs, not the Cleveland hits a lot of those, but they hit just enough. And we got one really fast game that was over in two hours and 17 minutes. Just like in the blink of an eye, lickety split. And then the next game took more than twice as small. Oh my God. I really did think that it might be going on by the time that Mariners Blue Jays had concluded. I really did. I was like, I don't know. Rob Manfred's nightmare.

"The Mariners knocking on the door to a playoff appearance for the first time since 2001. Here's the stretch. The three two pitch swing and a drive deep to right field. Stay fair. Holy smokes he did it. Off the headed air cafe. Cal rally with a one off home run. How sweet it is. The Mariners and the 20 year drought. And a walk off home run by Cal Raleigh. They win the ball game two to one and the Mariners are going to the playoffs. All right, well, I haven't update for you to end this episode, which is that the postseason bracket is set, all of the matchup uncertainty is resolved. Atlanta won its game, so the NL east race is over. We also have wildcard clarity. So, our match ups are raised versus guardians, Mariners versus Blue Jays, winner of raisin guardians plays the Yankees, winner of Mariners and Blue Jays, plays the Astros, and then on the NL side, we have Phillies versus cardinals, Padres versus Metz, winner of Philly's cardinals, plays the braves and winner of Padres Metz plays the Dodgers, the excitement starts on Friday. Actually, the excitement has already started, but the playoffs start on Friday. One other quick follow-up, I read the other day, a joking suggestion from someone who wrote in in response to our scenario in episode 1885, about the lowering mound, the descending mound that would slowly plunge the pitcher into the earth if they exceed their allotted time per the pitch clock, and we got a suggestion that maybe the slowly descending mound could quickly drop to protect pitchers from come backers. And there was some physics and some calculations about how quickly the pitcher would drop. Well, that response generated many responses, fact checking some of the math in that joking email. So I'll read a couple one was from Erin, Patreon supporter who said, I'm sure somebody has pointed this out already, but just in case, the guy at the end of episode 1910 who suggested lowering the mound very quickly, so pitchers could avoid come backers forgot to account for inertia, a pitcher freely standing on top of the mound, that is not strapped to the ground, would only be able to file at the rate of gravity on earth, roughly 9.8 m/s squared. If the mound fell faster, he would experience airtime as his body fell to slower pace than the quickly lowering mount. Thus mitigating the effect. This happens on drop towers at amusement parks. When they fall faster than gravity, the riders are thrown up into their restraints because their body is not accelerating downward as fast as the ride. I'm sure you had multiple people right into port this out, we did, and I'm well aware his response was a ridiculous joke, but I figured I would write in anyway, as did Alana Patreon supporter who writes in episode 1910 y'all discussed dropping the mound into a pit to protect pictures from come backers as a former physics one O one TA, I won't check all the math, but I'll point out that the fastest the pitcher could descend standing on a platform would be one G as any faster would see him free falling above a platform pulled out from beneath him, this means the pitcher could potentially drop ten feet in the .8 seconds between pitch release and return as comebacker, but just 2.5 feet in the .4 seconds from that impact to ball returned, since the pitcher would be going almost 20 mph at the end of his ten foot fall and would need to be slowed down. I think we've arrived at our most logical destination, a, the prestige style switcheroo, where the pitchers man vanishes completely and drops him while a designated Fielder pops up simultaneously ready to aid the team's defense. Since this operation would be happening hundreds of times per game, it probably makes more sense to have a pillow underneath instead of a water tank if only to preserve the pitcher's grip on the ball. Good point, Alana, that would be a real slobber ball after repeated plunges. And I deeply appreciate everyone who wrote in to say, I know that was just a joke, but oh, that reminds me in that same outro episode 1910, I believe that was right after Shohei Ohtani's no hit bid. I mentioned that there couldn't have been that many people rooting against Shohei Ohtani that maybe even a's fans had been pulling for him to do it because he's so easy to root for and what did the a's really have at stake? Well, I heard from some Bayes fans, including Brandon, who wrote in to say, in episode 1910, you mentioned that even a's fans might have been rooting for the ohtani no hitter because what else do we have to lose? Well, as an ace fan, I just wanted to let you know that we were definitely not rooting for the Otani hitter. The a's have the longest current streak for not being no hit, dating back to July 13th, 1991. The a's have literally never been no hit in my lifetime. That's what's at stake. Please, this is all we have. I'm sorry, Brandon. And I'm sorry other ace fans that that is all you have. And for misrepresenting your hypothetical views, I suppose that is an acceptable reason to root against Shohei Ohtani, not that I would ever suggest such a thing. If there was ever a team that was almost asking to be no hit, it was the 2022 a's. But it didn't happen. Actually, it just goes to show how random the distribution of no hitters is that we've only had three this whole season. Two of them combined, whereas last season we had a record breaking 9, two of them combined. The league batting average isn't any higher this year. In fact, it's a point lower than it was last year, but not many no nos. Partially as we discussed recently because so many pitchers get pulled from no hit attempts these days, most recently, Louise severino. Anyway, thanks for all the emails. I always learn a lot.
