And what we found was that some of the most elite coaches athletic programs and sports agents seemed to look the other way. Even as evidence mounted that Aaron Hernandez life was spiralling out of control. Instead they did what it took to keep a great player on the field. Repeats twenty. Ironed Hernandez stood six foot two and weighed two hundred forty pounds. He had lightning-quick speed for his size. Incredible coordination. I thought he was exceptional that he had completely rare abilities, tremendous hands. That's Greg Bavard, a former Boston Globe football writer. He's now the owner and columnist at Boston, sports journal dot com. He was basically a blend of a running back wide receiver and tight end all in one player. That's how versatile he was, and his skill set you just saw him and it didn't take very long to say disguise going to be a star in this league Hernandez excelled. At every level we all knew all the friends knew that Aaron was going to make it big. And then as a college player at the top ranked university of Florida, he's the best tight end. This played here is almost like he. He was like a meteor that came through here was really. Good left tragedy in his way. And then in the NFL his quickness has catching ability. His ability to start stop, said, change as a tight end, be able to run routes from the outside, like an outside receiver run inside receivers, like a slot receiver, stretched the field, the play with some of the best wide receiving. I've seen in my NFL career. It was spectacular. He was drafted by the patriots in two thousand ten in quickly became a star in his second season. He in tight end rob gronkowski became the most productive tight and tandem in NFL history, Hernandez alone gained almost a thousand yards as a receiver and running back Boston. Globe sportswriter. Ben Volen remembers those days, Aaron Hernandez, rob gronkowski where the preeminent duo in the league, and they're kinda revolutionizing NFL offenses with to tighten. Ends and no one in the league really knew how to stop those two guys. So for a little while it worked perfectly. A season. It's been for the patriots Cousy and her. But life in the NFL was far from easy, like most of his peers Hernandez played through pain. He took medication to cope with injuries. He did what it took to keep playing in the first round of the two thousand eleven playoffs to patriots, faced the Broncos early in the fourth quarter Hernandez got the ball in charged headfirst towards the end zone. But was stopped cold by Broncos player and went down hard. After a few seconds, he was back up and trotted off the field. Shot the patriots classified ad injury is minor and quickly cleared him to play. He helped them win their next postseason game, and then they were headed to the Super Bowl. These teams play. They just simply have no answer form warrior, and now going to try and jam at the line of scrimmage, second and do over the middle, getting three.

"Hi, it's Laura Beale the host and reporter of Dr death. I'm here with a fellow reporter Bob Haller. Bob is a longtime sports reporter for the Boston Globe. And for the past few months, he's been assigned to their storied investigative spotlight team. He and his colleagues at spotlight have just completed an investigative series called gladiator about the life crimes and death of the football player. Aaron Hernandez. The six part series premieres from Wendy and the Boston Globe today with the first two episodes available. Now, like Dr death gladiator is a deep dive into the story of a very troubling individual. In this case, a famous football player who was convicted of murder and assist him around him. That in a lot of moments chose to look the other way rather than addressed the red flags. We're going to hear a bit of the first episode in a few minutes, but I'm excited to talk with. Hi, Bob, thanks for talking with me today, Laura. Thanks so much for having me on. Can you first tell me some about the series to give me the overview and what it covers while you know most people know the globe spotlight team for exposing the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests and the Oscar winning movie about it. But the spotlight team has a history of breaking new ground on on the stories of notorious figures like the Boston gangster Whitey Bulger. In this case, there were a lot of unanswered questions about Aaron Hernandez, who, as you know as a star of the New England Patriots. We wanted to know how he went from being a kid, a youth football player who everyone's seemed. Everyone said, seemed happy on the outside to a killer and then a suicide victim. One of the things in in the store that I looked out with in my mind, it revealed just as much about the medical system as it did about Christopher Dench. Can you tell me some things about the world of. Football that your story revealed that maybe the rest of who does watch the game? Don't know. Well, I mean, a your story. The medical board is tasked with protecting the health and lives of patients in very high stakes stuff. You know, in in football, we choose to watch it and it's, you know, it's an entertainment business, a huge entertainment business, and we we all as a culture buy into that. And so we all have a sort of a sense of a stake in all of this. And and so the whenever the football culture promotes exploits players and sort of discards them like, you know, exposing disposable chips. I mean, that's all that's something all of us should be aware of and concerned about an, especially when we're learning more and more about the toll that this game is taking on on men who play it. Do you have any recordings of Aaron Hernandez? Spotlight team has obtained hundreds of recordings of Aaron Hernandez himself talking about his life, and that's going to be fascinating. For people to to hear. Thanks for talking with me today. Thanks so much, Laura. It's been a pleasure. And now here's a bit of the first episode of the new series gladiator, Aaron, Hernandez, and football Inc.
