Vote (If You Want To & Can)

"Let's jump right in and talk a little about the history of the native vote and the history of the suppression of the. Native. Vote. I got to tell you that when trump I got elected I felt. Like. Sick to my stomach I. And I. Spent a good amount of time reflecting on my own personal behavior like thinking to myself did I to enough to. Try to make this, not happen. And and the answer is you know I don't often talk about national politics both through project to on my blog personally, you know because I fi-, I find it incredibly problematic and uncomfortable to talk about because you know we're living in colonial state and the federal government has actively tried to eradicate us, and there's a long history of broken promises and broken treaties. Therefore, it feels very uncomfortable to say to my fellow native people you know. Go vote in the system that's not meant for us that doesn't actually ever do the things that it's said it's going to do but go vote. anyways you know. It feels I, feel like a hypocrite just saying it. Yeah I really feel like we need to talk about it. Right Yeah it is by no means a simple decision for folks in Indian country and I think that's really important to acknowledge and to think about as we. Start to talk about this election and what we need to do. Right and you know there has been a long history of active native vote suppression for the first one, hundred and fifty years. In this country, we weren't even allowed to vote, and then in nineteen twenty four can the Indian Citizenship Act which formally US citizens but states continued to prevent us from voting, right? I. Think Sometimes, there's memes and stuff that gets posted where it's like going through the. Different marginalized groups, and when they finally got the right to vote, and it often says like native Americans nineteen, twenty four. But we know for a fact that that's not true. Because, as you said, most states still had things in place to prevent needed from voting like it wasn't until nineteen forty eight that natives in Arizona got the right to vote and then all of that. Suppression that played into the passage of the voting. Rights, act. So in Nineteen, seventy, five. So the things like literacy tests or poll taxes or all of these suppression techniques that affected other communities of Color Also affected a native folks as well. There's all of these appalling facts that have led to all of these underlying issues and voting cases as to why are people have not shown up to the polls in the same numbers you know I I often get asked. Like whoa when I tell when I'm having this conversations with non native people and say, yeah, like a lot of not a native people that I know are don't Vo are when you look at the numbers, you know you would you might think to yourself like, well, why wouldn't native people be active in this process and just want to acknowledge that it? It's it's very systemic. Done on purpose. Absolutely. Yeah. So we're like giving the dates from like nineteen, twenty, four, nineteen, forty, eight, nineteen, seventy, five but like. In twenty eighteen North Dakota changed their ID laws to say that if you were voting, you had to have an idea that had a street address on it and most native folks in North Dakota, Po Boxes, and don't have street addresses. So it was like an active step to try and suppress native in Dakota because natives have power in voting in north. Dakota and in a lot of states that have high population. So like this is an ongoing thing for native communities and then that actually that actually didn't work out well for. North. Dakota. Because all of these activists came together got really good publicity. There was a lot of grassroots organizations and then was it Ruth Buffalo ended up taking the seat. anyways. So so you know I think that's a really good demonstration of the power of the native vote especially in rural areas of Turtle Island. What I should add to this conversation. Around. You know like the the power of the native vote and the complicity of us. Even, telling each other to vote is that. You know we want to have a relationship with the people that get elected. Even. Biden beats trump's not only going to fix the dislike colonial problem. That we have. Yeah I mean it's hard because there are definitely things we can talk about that are like. Immediate. Undoing of things that the trump administration has done that have been really harmful to you need of communities, but there's also an entire list of things that are not going to happen even under a Biden Administration And there's this. Quote that I saw on the wall of the Harvard Law School Lake. Years and years ago and I think about it often in terms of these ideas of justice or like doing what's right from the federal government I will say it's problematic because it's only attributed as a quote African proverb, which obviously is a really problematic but the the Clo- is corn cannot expect justice from court composed of chickens. And I think about that in terms of. Natives asking for equal treatment or justice from the US. Colonial government is like corn expecting justice from a court may have chickens

Are Banks Safe?

"Month they had several plus members. Share an article with me. That was published in the Atlantic titled Becoming Bank Collapse. The subtitle was the US. Banking System could be on the cusp of calamity this time. We might not be able to save it. Article was written by Frank Partnoy. He's a law professor at UC Berkeley. That's a pretty ominous title. We WanNa look at the article as well as the state of US banks and banks around the world. Should we be worried given the pandemic is the banking system poised to collapse. I was especially interested in the article, because it came out right after I had increased my allocation to stocks and added a preferred stock et after the money for the rest of US plus model portfolios. The particular preferred stock after us by shares has about twenty six percent allocated to banks and banks are on the cusp of this calamity that does not bode well for preferred stocks. In the article, Partnoy is particularly worried about banks exposures to an esoteric security. A collateralized loan, obligation or see Elo. We Discussed Sea Ellos back in episode two six in May twenty eighteen. collateralized loan obligations are asset backed securities issued by special purpose vehicles or s peeves. The S P V purchases leveraged loans which are non investment grade bank loans that have been syndicated. A, bank will make a loan to a Non Investment Grade Company, a higher risk company and then sell that loan into the marketplace. Many of those purchasers are Clo's is over a trillion dollars of leveraged loans outstanding. and. Most are held as part of these collateralized loan obligation structures. The way it works. Is that s? Cells, debt and equity securities that comprise to see yellow. Those securities are backed or collateralized by the leveraged loans. The CEELO has multiple layers tranches that are sold separately. The debt layers are rated by credit quality, so the senior layer is triple A.. There are lower rated debt layers known as mezzanine layers, and then there's an equity layer which is unrated. The payments on the underlying leverage loans, those payments are pooled together and flow in order. The first payments go to the senior AAA layer then to the lower rated layers, and then finally to the equity layer. That is known as they waterfall. The debt tranches are over collateralized debt ACL Oh might have issued five hundred million dollars in debt securities as part of the L O that are backed by six hundred and twenty five Million Dollars Worth of leveraged loans with the Additional One, hundred, twenty, five million in loans funded from selling the equity trunch. Each Cielo about one hundred and fifty to two hundred and twenty-five loans. And because the leverage loans, themselves are floating rate notes. Their interest rates will fluctuate as short term. Interest rates change the debt tranches within a cll are also floating rate, so there's some protection if interest rates rise. Now because of this waterfall structure, the equity tranches takes the first losses, then the lower rated debt tranches, and finally if it gets to that this senior triple, a. rated debt trench suffered losses. That hasn't happened before. The SNP does a global Cielo report looking at default rates. From Nineteen ninety-six to twenty, eight eighteen overall default rates for CEELO's was zero point five percent. The worst vintage year was sea ellos issued in two thousand eight. there. The default rate was one point seven percent. There have been no defaults in CEELO's issued between two thousand, nine and two thousand eighteen. And from that one, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty, two thousand eighteen period, there has never been a default for the triple eight trunch, and only one default for the AA trunch. Now as you know, we are in a pandemic and defaults within the High Yield Bond and leveraged loan space is increasing. Fitch estimates the twelve month default on leveraged loans is four percent, and that more than two hundred billion dollars of leveraged loans will default through year end twenty, twenty one. Adequate to a two year cumulative default rate of fifteen percent. Just because leverage loans are defaulting doesn't mean all the different tranches of a coo is experiencing a default. So a report on the wall, Street Journal from mid May that showed about ten percent of Cielo managers have been diverting cash flow away from equity investors and going to the debt tranches, which means there have been default that are starting to impact that junior equity trunch. What is different from this cycle, though is leveraged, loans are more risky and we discussed that in episode to a six. The covenants on these loans are less restrictive. The credit quality is lower. The financials are weaker and so we should expect defaults to increase. Question is will see a low default and other defaults and other loans impact banks to where we should be worried about our savings or investments that we might have in banks. In banks securities. Including their common stock and their preferred stock.

What We Inherit: Marie Kondo and the Security of Stuff

"Parents are preparing to remodel my childhood home. They want to add a room to the house. So that my mom's mom my paw-paw can stay with them. She's been in and out of the hospital and at ninety three. The family doesn't think she can live on her own anymore. The first and last time we remodeled our house was sixteen years ago. And I'm pretty sure that's the last time or house was D- cluttered at any in-depth way since then. My mom has made several attempts to clean the house. But it's never really worked now that my mom's busy taking care Paul. I thought I should fly home to help. Assess the situation okay. So this is the most this what we're looking at right now. Is the most thing that gives me the most headache when I come home. What are we looking at mom and are standing in the living room looking? Glass Window that spans. The back wall and overlooks an enclosed patio inside there are cardboard boxes plastic bins plants. An old fish tank and a bunch of other stuff large clear plastic sheets cover the boxes and another sheet for some reason is taped to the ceiling. How many would you say that? There's in patio. Oh some of the some empty boxes but how do you? Why did you because I don't have time to go? Charging the go on the cops can so they put it in here? Just get away from my side and it's also kind of an eyesore eyesore. I mean is is so I I would have WANNA clean up a couple of time. I tried to let them know is paper cannot just toss it. I had to look at by details a lot over the sweat a lot. Even when there's a task at hand like cleaning our house my mom always has to multitask. Since I'm only visiting California for short while I thought we would be able to spend the weekend decluttering instead. Mom had other plans money doing. I'm pure and the ginger could make some Sephora Papa and knife family. Whenever anyone sick we make soup. It's something that my papa always does. But since she sick herself it's my mom's job to make and deliver it to her. Which is why I guess. Mini cleaned up pasta sauce jars. That mom's saved over the years are finally coming in handy. Mom is the Middle Child. She's the third five she and three of her siblings emigrated from China to Hong Kong to Sacramento California with Paul when my mom was just eleven when I was growing up. That's all I really knew like a lot of other children of immigrants. I knew a lot about my mom's immigration story while also knowing nothing everything she told us was very matter of fact. Papa sacrificed a lot and worked in sweatshops. So you and your brother have to study hard. Mommy had to take care of her younger siblings. So you and your brother are lucky. You don't have those responsibilities. Are FAMILY HAD LITTLE MONEY. So we had to save everything. And even after my mom escaped the Clutch SA- poverty moved out of Papa's house and started a family of her own. She held tight to this rule. Anything that came into our house rarely left so we did toss something out. I mean not top. We put in a box and then we put it in the uncle Terry and he says garage okay so so you didn't technically throw away anything we when you were modeled. We was in a hurry so he everything that box. We originally remodeled the house. When I was ten I guess I was so young that I never realized what my mom's main cleaning technique was putting things in boxes and shoving them into my aunt and uncle's garaged. Okay what happened to the VOX? After year we moved to think that in so some of the box be opened up. Nba Use it and some of the box. Do in the in the patio thing. Yeah so can you. The patio is filled with boxes from our first remodel. But also things for my dad's parents my union and yeah from when they passed away many years ago aside from the patio. Our House as a whole is just so full of things even before we planned this newer model to add a room for Papa. My Dad and I had been trying desperately to help my mom. Clean her closet. We thought we could start small before tackling the whole house after Marie condos the life. Changing magic of tidying up was released and translated into English in two thousand fourteen. My Dad bought a copy for mom a Christmas present. Murray condos hopeful osophy is that if an object to spark join you. You should get rid of it. I thought that there was no way that all the things in my parents house could possibly spark that much joy. I was hopeful that reading this book with somehow enable both of my parents to turn into something worthy of hgtv show but simply put it. Hasn't okay well. So so dad bought you this book. The Mary Condo Book for Christmas copiers. We use did you. Did you read it? Sure did I did. Did you learn anything from it? You Go Clo- make it nicely and I love this. I kept it and I found out. I love a lot of close i. That's why we did make it like that but the problem is one. I had too many close to the way they set out after two. We have our mess up again. That the purpose of that is you have to keep it up every day. And I don't have time to do that. I don't but I don't have done it before. That's when they don't have like five pair of jeans ten pair you know or they have won. T shirt I had twenty one t shirt male one of my friends too gene. Naturally he could do it I have. I do have to go over my plant pans now. I have pobably thirty pair or more clearly. The MARIKANA book didn't drastically changed my mom's cleaning habits and because I live on the other side of the country for my parents. I can't be there to help clean every step of the way so I thought that having my mom watch Marie condos new Netflix. Show tidying up with. Murray condo would provide her with some tips aerial Bernstein a professor and journalist whose parents fled to Cuba then to the US refugees from Eastern Europe also thought that when she told her mother about the show You know we watched episode or two of the show together and then we went to try to do some of the Actual tightening and it's just really hard for her You know it's just very difficult to to think about getting rid of things You know my mom is living in the US now for for fifty years so it's not necessarily that she's not used to American culture. But I think that I think that just about legacy of having to to give things up almost sixteen when she came to the US. And I think that's for her. They're still idea that giving up something that's very integral unimportant. Throughout my mom childhood anything that could possibly get a second or third or tenth use did but I never really contended with the idea that this history this life of immigration impacted my own childhood as a kid I really resented how're cabinets overflowed with tupperware or how. We had an entire room in our house dedicated to storing stuff that I thought was junk photo albums. My Dad's records and broken record player kitchen gadgets. I was always embarrassed that we couldn't just get rid of things like other families. Why you think it's so hard for you with stuff like everything I buy like it. So that's why why would I taught away the thing that I you know. I like okay. Let's talk about some of the things that you allowed things. You have a lot of your tupperware though. Oh my mom has an obsession with tupperware. It's mildly unhealthy. When I was in elementary school she's to sell Tupperware to friends and coworkers but mostly to herself so she could get rewards points and get even more tupperware. Oh I love tougher billy. I do why because I don't know because I am over my end. Shoo Shoo Shoo introduced me to upper. Because you make a lot of cookie Dune a holiday and she put it inside a separate and she just eat it you know and give it to friend and so I think from there on I found out you know. That's good to use tupperware. This is the first time my mom has mentioned the story to me. Despite knowing tidbits about mom's immigration she never talked about her early life in California and any emotional sense. But it's something I've always wondered about. Leslie Jamison on Jenny Offill's Book 'Weather'

"Leslie Jamison is here in the studio. Her most recent book is make it screen and make it burn essays which was reviewed in the book review last fall all but she's here now to talk about another book. She reviewed this week on our cover. Jennie O. Foles Weather Leslie. Thanks for being here. It's so wonderful to be here so you. Let's first talk about Jenny full. Who she is? Pearl Siegel staff critic for the Times. Were a profile of Jennie O.. Full in this this week's issue of the New York Times magazine but give us a sense of who this writer is. When I think about Daniel's work and why it matters and why I think it's really created aided the sense of excitement around so many readers I think part of it you know she writes about motherhood and marriage and things that can get lumped under the general neural umbrella term domesticity but she brings them to life in these incredibly razor-sharp ways and there shouldn't even be a but conjunction to that sentence right like wire wire those states of being not razor-sharp somehow but but sometimes they can get seen as softer sentimental and she brings both very different form and a very different tone to how how she writes about them and how she does justice to their emotional extremity? Now I'm thinking that we have to make a challenge to ourselves not to use the word but for the rest of this partnership. I think there we go that we're are GONNA fail so we'll just we'll we'll put that aside. This book weather is her third novel her. I was last things and then it took her fifteen years to write. Her neck spoke department of speculation which came out in two thousand fourteen and was one of our ten best books of the year. And I feel like that book really brought her to you. A wider attention perhaps not bestseller list attention but it was hugely critically acclaimed and beloved by readers. Let's start talk a little a bit about that book and why it struck such a chord and I think it's no accident when you said it was like fifteen years until the next book which actually sort of part of the plot of Department of speculation too. It's like there's a writer who is taking a long time to put her second novel. Part of I think you know my understanding from interviews. She's done. The story of that book has that it started as a much more conventionally structured novel and it sort of took her a long time to whittle it down to its really searing form which is a very a fragmented form where you feel like you're getting these absolutely essential bursts of exerience. I think her agent described at once as more like an x Ray than a body which I thought was such such an amazing evocation of how it works and so part of why it caught. Hold I think is that it wasn't it wasn't just very smart about feeling and it had this strong long hard and it's about a infidelity and marriage sort of preparing itself but it also it seemed to find a new language for feeling a new structure for feeling the guy I want to go back to that the fragments Manson the structure for people who've not Reggiani Oval. We should say this. Her books are really short. They're really really short but they are packed and yet they don't feel dense and part of that is due to structure and you use the word fragments. People use the word fragments or fragmentary or cones. Let's talk about a house. She structures these books because it is especially when department speculation came out in two thousand fourteen. It felt very different from what was being written and it felt very very different from the way in which a domestic novel was being written. You know it makes me think a little bit about the way that like Virginia Woolf would describe moments of being you know that somehow we have these moments where it feels like something about experience is intensified or crystallized on. I think Jenny has a real knack for like putting her finger on the pulse of those moment. So maybe it's just an ordinary moment like in this latest novel. where she comes home from the her narrator comes home from feeling this intense panic about climate aamot change and her sons playing minecraft noon? SORTA get like putty off of his fingers. Like it's not in a dramatic sense like it's that's not a huge plot point happening in that moment but she manages manages to find these ways that seemingly insignificant moments if you if you describe them so precisely and locate some kind of feeling what's happening in them quivering inside them. She does justice to it and the way that her books are structured. I don't think there are like us in this weather. There are parts. I can't remember if in Department of Speculation Stephen divided into chapters but it's these single paragraphs are a few paragraphs spaced apart on the page. So not not only. Is it a small book but it actually. I mean you could theoretically sit down and read it in a couple of hours I did. You did theory. You could sit down down and read it very quickly and one of the things that I think people then mistakenly assume is that. Oh you know sort of hastily written you get the cents though once you are reading it that not at all does feel something. That is very much labored over almost like poetry in terms of the precision of the ways in which the things that she's putting into those little sections as you pointed out it's often about the contrast in a given moment between something very granular and domestic and personal and then some larger thought. That's going on or something happening in the greater world. Do you think that was what was is so striking about department of speculation. The fact that she was doing not that she was taking something like a domestic novel. That was you know. Just as you said kind of a story of a Brooklyn Glenn Mother and infidelity and work life balance and these things that so many books are about but infusing in it these larger the issues. I think that's a really good point that so often. What makes these like short bursts? CLO- fuel incandescent our field. Charged is is that they're very granular. But they're also holding some kind of emotional intensity and I think when you're writing about something like infidelity where there's both the danger of somehow telling a story that people feel like they've heard before story that feels intrinsically melodramatic. It can really bring out the humanity of the story to pay attention to the granularity of of like a one scene. That's rising to mind from that novel is like the narrator after a conflict with her husband going to stay at a hotel overnight and and like preying on the carpet of the hotel floor. But it's like it's like that hotel carpeting that holds so much feeling rather than just like the larger obstruction of of infidelity per se. Or something and so I think it is that scale shifting that can happen in a space of a paragraph. Can that happen across the course the whole book. That's also really operative in this latest book. where the skills or even bigger because among other things about climate change is like one of the biggest skills yes yes yeah? Let's talk about weather and let's start start with what it's about even though you know as we think people are probably sensing when you talk about Jenny ovals work. It really isn't about plot. Yeah but what is whether yeah so the narrator of weather is a mother who years ago dropped out of a PhD program and it's working as university librarian and she takes a job job working for her former mentor. Who does a podcast about climate change? where she's answering all the letters that are coming in response to this podcast so there are a few different? There's the kind of plot of her I went to the overhauls narrator to answer my letters to this cast. I'm just kidding. I love answering your letters I would be. I thought you were GonNa even save answer my letters I was like I have a few letters. Live right Yeah I mean you know you have this narrators mother you have her as a wife wife you have her as a a worker and maybe a worker who feels a bit lost in the world. There's also for me. One of the most compelling plot lines in the book is about the narrators relationship with her brother. WHO's a recovering addict? He gets married and then has a a baby and her role in his life and her sort of desperate hope that he can put his life together. Other was a really moving strand among strands for me as well presumably. That's very deliberate. Bringing new life into a world that is in crisis crisis and feels like it's ending and I think that's one of the abiding emotional. Tensions in the book is like the the world is always beginning and ending at once. And maybe maybe there's something about that truism that has felt universal through time but it has a particular acuity now or the world is is it's ending he's send away by these factors that are at work but that dynamic of like yes the world is ending but also you wake up in the morning and you're touching base with your brother overtaxed to make sure he and the baby are doing okay that both of those are real on. Both of those are happening. I think we're seeing a wave of climate fiction and it's taking all of these different forms. Probably a most noticeably post apocalyptic and dystopia although there are also books like Richard powerhouses over story sometimes metaphorical Oracle sometimes very reality based feels different. Though I mean how does this differ from other fiction looking at climate and climate. Change for starters. You don't have that kind of like emotional. Buffer of the post apocalyptic landscape that emotional buffer mailing a strange way to describe a postal puck landscape. But it's like if the apocalypse is happening thing in Brooklyn Public School like that's the stage set for the book it feels more disquieting in certain ways because it's closer to home. It's not like Cormac McCarthy novel where a father and Zahn are like traveling the chart landscape like it's more immediate in that way and I think one of the challenges of writing about climate change is how to take this thing that is essentially on a larger scale than our minds can hold and how to make it a narrative we can hold. There's this moment early on in weather where the narrator is thinking about her son allies elementary school and she says the problem with the school is that it's not a bill on a human scale feels too large for these little children who are going into it and I I think in a way that lays out one of the aesthetic challenges the book right. It's like climate. Change isn't quite on a human scale but narrative is on a human scale. So how do you translate. How does she do it? Part of it has to do with what we're talking about a little bit earlier these questions of sort of scale shifting and simultaneity where you had these big questions of like the end of the world coming up either through the letters that are coming into this podcast or you know this narrator is doing what I think. We all do obsessive googling about lots of things where she's sort. I'm trying to see like how hot is it going to be in New York City and you know when her son is sixty years old or something like that and getting so freaked out by these numbers so you sort of have those larger questions that are always coming up against the interpersonal. TRAUMAS the books. So either it's like the obstruction of like how hot is the World GonNA get comes up up against the body of her actual son. She's imagining at age. Sixty or thinking about like the horsemen of the apocalypse. Coming in comes up against you know coming home ends ends giving the dog. His Lover Frog Toy. You know so the becomes on a human scale because we see a particular human with a particular life a particular brother who's giving bringing new life into the world that all of those abstract questions are hitting all of those granular

"I'm how Brian I'm senior editor here at. EA and Oshkosh Wisconsin. And and I'm one of the hosts of the green dot and sitting here with me on the left it is I'm one of the other host. I'm Chris Henry the EA Aviation Museum Programs Coordinator and somebody snuck snuck into the room with us today. Chrissy sitting across the table and she'd tell us about them absolutely just for the record When he showed up it literally dropped twenty degrees here? So you're about the a cold wave degrees Fahrenheit that's true I think either a thousand or sixty degrees centigrade degrees. Yeah well anybody. WHO's a fan of the TV show? Ice Pilots Will be familiar with Scott Blue. Scott the thank you for joining us today. Thanks for having me Chris. Good Morning. Well thanks for coming and We're GONNA IF ANYBODY WHO's listening to this It'll be after the time so you have missed it but Scott is actually here to take part in the speaker series. Here at the museum happens every third Thursday the month shameless plug there but But Luckily we've recorded. Where did this podcast? So if you could make it you'll have something to listen to and hear about your adventure down here and we should be doing a video of the speaker series as well. That's yes I usually goes up within two or three three weeks or so of the event so absolutely evidence. Great years but You know being being a foreigner her as you are the are. US laws must have might charming to you. We didn't get pulled over on the draft Milwaukee. It was fun. They let me into the country so I'm already winning. Well that's that's good questions. Will they let you out Kennedy not want me back scanning passports sports these days. I'm in trouble. We're always looking for good people. Welcome all right Scott. Well let's let's do. We always liked to do on the show. Let's go back back to the beginning. We were having great conversations right before. Went on about About some of the movies so I say back to the beginning. Well I the earth cool cool dinosaurs game not quite that far back Mike Myers. I'm sorry thank you fellow Canadian eighty at my life. Let's go back to a little bit closer to your beginning. How did you first get into flying? Were you a kid interested in aviation was something year round at all. I always liked airplanes when I was younger and You know even going back when I was a kid. We used to go down to Florida every year and we had a condo down there and I remember one year getting into radio controlled airplanes and magazine Z.. My mom bought forming. We weren't we could see in the store and then it was in a holding pattern until we actually started the drive entertainment for the kids as we go down a little older I get it you know. I can't see the magazine and it'll wait. And then we started driving down and funny enough. I still have this. Old Radio Controlled Model Airplane magazine and on the cover. It is a seal to fifteen. Oh there was an article the guy that made one going in and out of the water One but then the actual picture of it was there and it sort of you know foreshadowed several decades later actually got into that it you know in my career but yeah I always liked airplanes and cars and anything with an engine and You Know I. I went to university after high school. I finished my degree and Happy to say it would be in geography a fee. But it wasn't really leading me into anything so our jingle researching Yo hey I can still become pilots too late as a mid twenties and You know give. The military shot didn't work out because a little tall but Yeah just started. Chipping away at the flight school with North of Toronto. So you mentioned you mentioning just too tall. Aw to fly in the military. So you're seven yet is that right and That still seems sort of I guess I get it but it so seems strange to me like this in the you know whether that was the late twentieth or early twenty first century. That something like that that you know. You're you're smart. You're obviously good pilot. Well it all all these other qualifications. But I'm sorry just physically don't fit in the cockpit. How did it seems amazing to me that we can't well to me? Is that it it because of the L. Red tape in the way that the hiring process goes took several months for that to be established whereas on the very first day I was asking too tall and they'd be like I'm not sure. How is your eyesight and Mike Take my told to do this job? And at every step in the process I kept asking and basically I don't know you know down the line and by the time I got after all the simulator checks in the background checks and the two hour interview where they ask you about some pretty intense stuff being you know you're signing up for the military past all that everything was okay and then I I went from full medical and all your tallet everything else on. Yeah and like we're talking top to bottom everything like x rays. I checked you name it and at the end of it a set down the flight surgeon and he's okay. Well you're too tall. What else is wrong with you? Nothing nothing else is wrong with you. Did you get here. And I'm like nobody nobody would give me a no and so oh I just. He's like okay. Well tell you come back next week and we'll measure you again. What's going to happen that week? I thought they were just GonNa put me in an F.. Eighteen and object back to me over northern Alberta compress lose an inch and the way to go. I didn't happened. showed up the next week. And they it was interesting because they had to hide expert. And and they plotted me out and make really measured everything. And they had a chart green yellow red but the different machines in the Canadian military and read it was no go on that was for helicopters and the F. Eighteen of just wasn't gonNA happen yellow sort of like Oh might work in you know some of the other training planes and some smaller machines but then green. It was wide open for two hooks and the C. Seventeen and and We call them the Aurora. CB One forty rowers but P. threes. And I was like cool. I'll fly that stuff. That sounds great and they said well No. Thank you but if you're not able to do everything everything does work for us so actually coming out. Wow what's it's amazing to me because if you talk to people over the years who have been undetermined to you know to get in the military military do flying and things like that you hear stories of people as you know they were told no upfront and well then they then they fought it or going going back far enough. It's like well you can't do it because of your is well you know. The doctor leaves the room. They memorize the eye chart and get into but those people usually sort of told no at every step but I hate to to indulge the stereotype but maybe maybe this was uniquely Canadian. Because you're not find anybody to actually say they just said you're still quite handsome. I'm afraid it's the it's the height it's really you know it's the rest of us are too short. Sorry it's not you it's us we're GONNA have to the whole program to fit people like you. Subways cars cars are going to make it work. You can pick a little while. Oh that's fascinating to me though you know it it it it it is what it is you. There's nothing I can do about that and it's been some effort to deal with my tire. Career couldn't find fleiss certain airplanes at Buffalo was to offer. DC3's couldn't fly one fifty. Two's for the training. I think I did but hey I'm here now. Gainfully employed as a pilot and I mean it is interesting applying a Dornier two to eight in the winter right now my knees are pretty much chance. Yeah crossings from the Left are interesting to make it work. Well that's something else that I find it especially interesting though. Is that You know if you look at you look on the career that you've you've had so far and you're still young Guy But you flown some amazing things have had these incredible experiences. And who knows how that would've How the career would have played out? Had you gone into into the Canadian Forces and and gone a completely different direction. I'm sorry I would've still been rewarding but but Maybe you would have had a very different in. Dare I say less fulfilling career to this. It's it's tough to say you know it really in a life gives us these past and you go down one and another one disappears and you can think of what all the hypothetical ways go. I mean maybe you know it could have been flying seventeen all over the world you know on CNN. In that regard. I mean the chopper thing was out in. The fighter jets roared. But you know you you never know and you know I'm happy with the path that's ended up and You know wants the one door closed. It's like okay. Well you know time for next one keep moving so but yeah it would have been would have been interesting I think but hey I'm happy how it worked out and you know lots of adventures up north and say the least a few minutes ago. You mentioned your flight training that you're too tall for the for the system of fifty two Key Tell us about your fight training. What did you train in and out of that I'll go sure absolutely I went to flight school. North of Toronto. Oh called Toronto Airways Airport based Button Ville airport which was funded out about a couple of times. Yeah Okay we'll enjoy it because they keep saying it's GonNa Clo that's GonNa close and it's been bought by developers and it's still open. It's just keep delaying. It will eventually close. I'm sure which is yeah. Disappointing community not happy about that in Canada but So I went up there. I started chipping away at it and funding my first and strike flight instructors later heather. And she's about five foot wonder five two so she's putting a phonebook behind her back in the seventy two and crank in the seat forward and up. Meanwhile I'm going down back and trying to kick a hole in the side for some with the Sunroof uh-huh for the but so is Yeah lots of one. Seventy two was the primary playing a trained on and then a twin engined stuff was on a piper seminal and I valley parked in Toronto. Pay For it all the whole time and So that was there are some other vehicles getting in and out of small spaces so adapted with that and Took took took a couple of years. I was more Working to pay for it all and then when I was done the training of wasn't any debt which is rare. You know these days of flight training because it is very expensive Had A lot of fun with that and You know just flew over mostly Ontario a little bit into Quebec and yeah some great great instructors at a wonderful time checked off all the boxes and then it was resume ta I am.

CAMPAIGN 2020: Why Amy Klobuchar is bucking other Democrats on mining

"Amy Klobuchar isn't usually mentioned in the same breath as a top tier twenty twenty Democrat like Biden or Buddha Judger Sanders Warren. But she's poised for a breakout in the nominating contests because after stumbling during the Iowa debate the Minnesota Senator is getting enough good news that voters seeking the most electable people person to challenge. Trump are giving her a second look. She just got the kind of dual. She got a coal endorsement from the New York Times. They endorse both the women in it which is ridiculous. Two weeks out from the first in the Nation Caucus Club Shar was anointed the New York Times Times presidential candidate of choice alongside Warren as we said now. Warren is seventy club shares. Only fifty nine. She also broke double double digits for the first time in a New Hampshire poll. Oh she did it again in Iowa with another Emerson Pool in December. He's peaking at the right time. Sure sure is oh clemente. CLO- Momentum Clemente's it's a thing it's on

Qualcomm is at the center of 5G. Were still, almost, there.

Qualcomm is at the center of 5G. Were still, almost, there.

"When it comes to rolling out five G.. There are a lot of moving parts at the heart hearts of the stories. It's qualcomm the company makes wireless chips for your phone and develops and licenses other technology in the wireless industry and it's been pushing five Gerard like future of the business hard but there are aspects of the five G. Rollout qualcomm can't control like how long it takes infrastructure to make it into you every neighborhood in the country. The company is also the subject of an F. T. C. investigation over whether it abused its monopoly. Position in four G.. Technology to charge too much for licensing. It actually settled a long-running lawsuit with apple over the same thing. Last April Cristiano Amman is the president of QUALCOMM. And we spoke about all of this at in Las Vegas starting with the promise of five G.. Basically as you bring the computational power of the cloud cloud all of the data that exists in the cloud to any device and one of the things we said in the very beginning of this transition in the five era era will develop side by side with five G.. Just because you're connected to Clo- you have a lot of data you can apply machine learning tool the data five days also technology that I think we've I've been waiting for right. We've been talking about the promise for a long time consumers. Being consumers people are getting impatient. At what point do you think people are getting frustrated. Or they're gonNA. I say this is all hype and no reality. I agree those things. Take time for you to have all of those benefits technology you have to have coverage infrastructure instructor needs to be built. There is no free lunch unless you have covers. You Not GonNa get there. We have a couple of things that would dealing with as an industry. I I if you look at United States one of the number one obstacles when you talk to operators its ability to get new sites up and they are working working with municipalities one at a time China for example have identified one million sites for five G. until the end of two thousand twenty. It also sounds like five day deployment is really important to your long term business success. I mean is there any world I can just hear the open source community city saying like listen you could potentially make some of this available for everybody to build on to accelerate the ecosystem. Well that's what we do if you were an automaker or if you're an industrial company and let's say you're Bausch and you're making manufacturing robots and you want to add five g you have to build. Put An engineering capability of a Samsung or apple. To be able to deal with this and what qualcomm offers is will provide you a license. Essence would provide you a chipset would provide a reference design. We provide your software. You can easily add seller to your robots industrial machine to your car and if you we don't have a model that is horizontal in creates eco-system. You actually prevent all of those other industries to get access to sell it. They have to build a cellular or phone company to be able to do it. And that is why we think five G. we're going to see an expansion of the licensing model not the other the other direction. Yeah this is a little bit of a left turn but we've been doing a lot of coverage on climate and how technology in the tech industry can help us adapt be more. Resilient may maybe maintain emergency communications. How do you see welcomes role in sustainability and resilience and climate conversation overall? Look I I feel I feel. It's a IT'S A. It's an interesting I agree with you. It's I didn't expect that question but The way the way we think about is I at the very basic. We're a company that developed technology for a battery powered device like we don't have the luxury extre- in into technology that we do to assume that we're going to be plugged into wall so we're probably being br building a lot of efficiency. That's no no Secret why we've been so successful in automotive because as an industry like any all of the industry really try to address How they can be more efficient consume laugh? You will consume less electricity and I think as a general. I think that's one of the things that we contribute. The other thing is by making everything connected it. There is a significant increase in productivity. Even when you think I'm trying to provide more of a vision but we always said that that every year that goes by you do more of your work and your phone And I think that's going to change over time with everything connected enact productivity people will be able to Damore to work at home. They won't be able to connect with other people without having to be there and I think there's a lot of in direct benefits of basically providing technology that allow everything to be connected. I do as long as we're in our awkward questions phase WanNa talk about licensing Because parts of that business model of come under scrutiny qualcomm Ben in a long legal battle with the Federal Federal Trade Commission over whether some of those this licensing agreements have reached monopoly status. Do Plan to approach five licensing any differently in light of those disputes. Look there's so much I can tell you about. You know the dispute. I think other than the public statements were made. Were very pleased and was the right decision. You know for us to be granted at stay and I. I think we're waiting for the appeal. But we can tell you is we. We actually have a very vibrant Licensed business more though. That equi enables competition competition. We're very pleased that we have many companies that sign a five t license with qualcomm independent of the dispute in even post the ruling and That validation that you know we have a competitive business model and actually won the provides growth in competition industry. All right last question because you first joined qualcomm. Welcome in Nineteen Ninety five when the company was just ten years old. And you've left income back since then but I just. I wonder what that journey has been like in this entire ecosystem system. It's an. It's an incredible company. Actually I was fortunate enough to join before the first. CDMA network was able to see. Every single transition of wireless ARLEDGE LENDS EIGHTY FIVE THIRTY ONE G two G to three G. to four G. Five G. so I've been to all of those it's really fascinating to see how seller changed the society. It's one of those few opportunities dead and I think all of our employees feel that you can work on something that you actually no that changed the society and It's also interesting to see that we. We may bet that everybody. In each one of those bats knowing exception told us that's That's not gonNA work or there's no need for this and And we'll we'll be able to see as we state with their vision to transformation and I don't WanNa go back all the way to CMA. But I'll tell you an example when when when we first talk about four g you know it was fascinating to see. All of the analysts on their blackberrys sending emails to each other saying a WHO needs a hundred megabits per phone. Nobody needs it. I have living I need to have my email I have all of the. DSM is good enough for email and blackberrys now and Ns US and now we see people say hi. Paul needs to be connected with the cloud and you know multiple gigabits of Speed Woolsey. WNBA Final Series Game 5

"Fans we've got a great show for you a lot to talk about Lot to talk about including this amazing Wnba finals series that we're getting right ahead to a game five that's right I haven't heard day five between the Washington mystics in the Connecticut Spun will take place Thursday eight PM. ESPN two series has shifted back to Washington each team has one on each other's home court so that really has it been a factor we'll talk about that we're also going to talk about the drama in La a lot going on there so recent comments by the NBA Players Association I don't know if she CEO President one of those Michelle Roberts has sparked a lot of conversation we'll get into that and I'm yeah whatever else we've talked about well first of all DEB I just want to ask you because we covered allow last podcast you weren't here you didn't even get to number one address your Vegas team that you picked to win the championship and why they're not here you're in all the drama with Liz us you didn't even get to comment on that would you care. Is there anything you want to address from the semi finals the Erica shot like you just totally have been absent I really have let's see I for one I still oh dear dinner for her shot and keeping alive just long enough to make it past y'all teams you tell picked the beginning of the season so at the end of the day really taking her to dinner Garretta when you're in Chicago let me know I got you love the list trash talk that you know it's really exciting really being what would the weight room thing do for us you were on the other team like Oh yeah I it was a I think it was poor timing however I live for stuff like that so I've had I was thoroughly enjoying the comments because I am the Queen's trash talking so I enjoyed it I don't think it was the property the time that that fire DC up to be honest Yeah I I don't think it was the right time for it but I mean I like the trash talking I mean I I'm pretty sure didn't Natasha Clouds Day she guarantees the wind Thursday I'm here for all of his arms well let me just say this real quick like honestly not tweeted this yesterday this is just a little prayer by listening we're going to get into the hardcore seven-minute but this trash talkers the thing has started to get a little bit I tweeted this because I think I heard Jasmine Thomas in what was it Oh yes the game the presser after game four she was like you know people were thinking we're GonNa roll over like basically responding to a question about the get to the championship and I'm like who still saying stuff about Connecticut like I am all for the disrespect campaign because I think it's fueled their players is fire them up uh I'm just speaking of someone who would played on the other team like I'm a little bit over like Courtney Williams saying I get any shot I want to like if I'm your teammate I'm like dude food chill with that because the game three she actually didn't get every shot she wanted to you know what I mean like you gotTa be real careful about the trash-talk stuff because you said you can fire team up I think Connecticut completely fired up about things that people were saying July like please resurrected if that's we do but I don't think anyone has really questioned in being a championship contender in at least the last month and a half now the way they've done it yes I mean did I think La was win again yeah but I just don't know there's just so much I don't know about that now the role player comment that came out was definitely ember that was not in July and when you look at the national coverage if you will about who decidedly was supposed to win aw nobody picked Connecticut I know here espn all of our analysts who decided to make a prediction predicted that it would be Washington so I don't think the deal would that's that's very listen that's still very relevant that people pick Washington because we have a game by like that you have won anything yet you know what I'm saying like I don't know I don't think I picked La to make it. I Don I bic La to make it past Connecticut so but no but they didn't know that Ah I mean I think as a player as a as a player I think that you don't say that out loud you may say it on the court and you may talk to you you know like the teams but saying it you know in the media is always smart 'cause they just give you know like fuel to the other team I think you have to be smart with your trash talking but as a fan I'm enjoying it so much more exciting so I'm I'm here for it I just feel bad that jasmine had to arrest that at this point like they've already won two games in the finals or going to a game five she's still talking about people thinking that they were GonNa roll over like I seen that but I get what you're saying about the role players commentary go which okay that's fine but they've been doing a lot more out here than that it's brilliant it's entertaining I just get worried we're people start doing too much happened because I know what that does the other team you know what I mean like Liz campaigns now knows what that does to the other team like you just need to you need to stay humble because it was dying to Rasi they had to shut Courtney Williams down two years in a row because she got a little bit out of pocket and I love Corny I've covered her since her US days I think she is great for the game I'm loving all the coverage of her and her dad is like dream dad right like he is down he is like supporters aw I'm all here for this to be real careful in this league honey because people never forgets no and you're gonna hear about it later so they better back then yeah you sure will and with that let's talk about let's go into our first quarter so we can talk about something and I'm Connecticut WanNa forget this quarter An- that is game three they wanNA forget that because they latorre L- game three on on Sun a Sunday so just like a quick recap on that so that we can get into what was a phenomenal game for Connecticut Lost Ninety four eighty one on Sunday they look like a very different team I'm just the game before John Clo- Jones had a stellar performance thirty two and eighteen but Sunday came around the MVP returned for one. Washington didn't really look I thought she looked stiff personally didn't think that she moved very well but it Kinda didn't matter she still finished with thirteen points six board she's still played twenty six minutes and whether you've got her for ten percent or one hundred percent you still got a garter you still got to worry about her she's still going to impact Act anybody that is going to have to face her so with that Connecticut was looking at a losing home court or had lost court advantage heading in to gain four they were down in the series two one but last night was a tale of two teams they started the game out firing on cylinders I mean they put together quite a first half performance on they led by as much as eighteen points they were up fifty six to forty at the half and so four we go into the second half of of how that game turned out I'm right after the halftime I'm sorry right before Halftime me Williams actually stopped for a moment to chat with our Holly Rowe and she spoke a little bit about why her team was so energized etiquette game five Thursday Courtney Williams doing her best to make that happen holly according to your defensive commitment is completely different tonight why did you change what did I tell you gotTa Win I you know I was a little bit off last game all back against the wall can't take no plays off you already got more is confidence and guess what she has the game back it up 'cause she doesn't need a screen she don't need anybody step up and do anything for her she could go get shots what she wants them now I thought we were talking about three looks like we're talking about gay four now yeah we're not gonNA spend too much time on game three that's because one we are limited on our time on this podcast right now and number two because Connecticut Connecticut Fan so we're moving fast at eight Dave I'll let you start which you think I thought in game force initially I mean Connecticut had great energy and you clearly saw that this was a deciding game and they do that and that's how they came out and they came out ready and but I also felt like DC they didn't look like themselves in the first half they're known for moving the ball really well in and getting good shots making the right pass and it felt like in the first half they were playing hon of one on one and not moving like they do in making extra passes and it showed because they weren't getting shot and when you're playing a team Connecticut who's great in transition you have to be able to put the ball in the basket and slow them down so I felt like you know Connecticut was able to really do what they wanted to do in the first half but then being a vet- team DC came back out in the second half and just knew what they have to do in turn the tables and we're able to

Can 5G fix America's broadband problem?

"You're tired of dealing with your cable company five jay could let let you cut ties with them for good. The next generation of wireless technology is coming out and it's rolling out across the world but it's already being touted as a possible replacement for traditional home broadband. The real question is will five j hold up to household use and how you gonna pay for it through the noise. That's the most important question now eli you've been playing around with five jay at home as a kind of replacement for johan broadband. What's your verdict it. I've been using an early version of sprints five g. network which isn't officially live in new york but you can find it in certain spots the right guys if they sell the devices all across the country but in certain areas as as they get ready to turn it on they already are testing it so you can hop onto that network in advancing where i live. There happens to be five g. and it works really well as home broadband <hes>. There's still a lot of things that need to be worked out. <hes> had some issues with xbox netflix on certain devices <hes> but <music> speeds were generally between one hundred to two hundred megabits per second which is on par with what a lot of people get at home. It's actually a little bit faster than the national average last year from i louisville's clo test <hes> so as far as playing games on xbox for streaming four k net flicks browsing the web all the things you use the internet for it was was perfectly fine the real question i think is going to be what would your daughter allowance bay. And how quickly are you going to ban through. That daughter allowed because i was reading a story this morning. You had a great faith drop on saint at about it and talking about streaming show info k for example suddenly you're burning through that daughter reasonably quickly and if you don't have the data cap to match shit doesn't matter what you spades are if you're burning through and then you get kind of type it on your spades. That's going to be why people get annoyed because i was watching a sixty

Giannis Antetokounmpo drops 41 points, Bucks surge to sweep of Pistons

"I have great news. It happened. Again. The pistons won the pistons won the pistons. Another first half of the playoff games against the bucks. However as the rules state they did have to also play the second half of the game during a gentleman by the name of Janas attentive PLO kinda to over Janas finish the game with forty one points, nine rebounds and a dominant performance that ended the season of the Detroit Pistons before we get to the pistons Jalen rose, what did you think of Janas dominance in the second half? I appreciate when your best player understands that it's a clo- closeout game. And they know out and have the best game of the series. I like that killer instinct, and this guy's virtually unstoppable as he gets a head of steam going towards the basket if you play off the him he takes up the space. It can do a euro step either way lead in good point goal. Over the top of you and bang out. And he still has the confidence to shoot jump shots, and he actually made a three. So as his office of game continues to evolve he becomes more of an unstoppable force in the league. You really does. I think a lot of people like, oh, it doesn't have a jump shot. Just back off of them say I don't know if you want him to gain that momentum those long strides long arms, you see he just went up against Andre Drummond under Jones seven foot one with long arms. These big he bounced off Drummond, switch to the other hand. And then finished in the air. Like, you do not want those types of problems. Jalen rose. The pistons have some problems now they're season's over. They didn't have Blake for the first two games in this series. I think a huge huge shout to Blake Griffin finishing out this series. He played pretty well. He was obviously hobbled. He had a great season.
