This is <Speech_Male> not new technology. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Can you elaborate <Speech_Male> on <Speech_Male> that? And perhaps <Speech_Male> enlighten us as to <Speech_Male> what is new <Speech_Male> in today's world <Speech_Male> usher, sure <Speech_Male> so cat <Speech_Male> and our uncut <Speech_Male> dealers <Speech_Male> all been involved in CHP. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Eisenstein <Speech_Male> sixties, one, thousand, nine, hundred, <Speech_Male> sixty. I think to be exact. <Speech_Male> Dealers <Speech_Male> have supplied CHP <Speech_Male> packages, <Speech_Male> using power modules, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> gas, engine, <Speech_Male> chillers, <Speech_Male> and Ciller <Speech_Male> equipment <Speech_Male> and of course <Silence> switchgear. It's my favorite. <Speech_Male> All <Speech_Male> for some time now <Speech_Male> one of the <Speech_Male> things that new has gotta <Speech_Male> pillars high-density <Speech_Male> high-efficiency <Silence> gas engine. <Speech_Male> has <Speech_Male> also been a <Speech_Male> good loosening <Silence> of regulations <Speech_Male> on gas <Speech_Male> and emergency power <Speech_Male> supply, <Speech_Male> due to some <Speech_Male> of the more recent natural <Speech_Male> disasters <Speech_Male> we've had <Speech_Male> such as Hurricane, Sandy, <Speech_Male> where <Speech_Male> gas was <Speech_Male> readily available, <Speech_Male> but <Speech_Male> the diesel storage tanks <Speech_Male> had flooded <Speech_Male> so now <Speech_Male> people are starting <Speech_Male> to look the requirements <Speech_Male> for backup power. <Speech_Male> Having <Speech_Male> had standalone <Speech_Male> fuel. <Speech_Male> Then, of course <Speech_Male> there's also the <Speech_Male> environmental push <Speech_Male> as you mentioned <Speech_Male> in your opening for <Silence> a clean burning fuel. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> But one more <Speech_Male> is that we've <Speech_Male> also developed <Speech_Male> a master control <Speech_Male> panel. <Speech_Male> That provides <Speech_Male> centralized <Silence> process control. <Speech_Male> Generated, <Speech_Male> control <Speech_Male> an operator <SpeakerChange> interface <Silence> into a single cabinet. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> On this panel, <Speech_Male> it's automatic <Speech_Male> response to process <Silence> sensors. <Speech_Male> And Control <Speech_Male> System components <Speech_Male> that I mentioned earlier. <Speech_Male> This is <Speech_Male> to balance the customer <Speech_Male> demand <Speech_Male> for engine, protection <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> alarm response for <Speech_Male> both thermal <Speech_Male> and electric circuits. <Speech_Male> Do you <Speech_Male> think that any facility <Speech_Male> could <Speech_Male> use and benefit <Speech_Male> from CHP? <Speech_Male> Absolutely <Speech_Male> Lou <hes> <Speech_Male> just about any <Speech_Male> facility can think <Speech_Male> nowadays, but <Speech_Male> some specifics. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> In the industries <Speech_Male> you know oil and gas of <Speech_Male> course, but <Speech_Male> we engage in with some. CHP, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> also district heating, <Speech_Male> awesome municipalities <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> are starting to use this <Speech_Male> for against some of that <Speech_Male> capturing <Speech_Male> that heat and hot <Speech_Male> water use <Speech_Male> greenhouses. <Speech_Male> There's been a definite <Speech_Male> uptick <Speech_Male> in greenhouse applications, <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> wherever you're seeing <Speech_Male> renewable energies <Speech_Male> so energy storage <Speech_Male> peavy sites <Speech_Male> are also <Speech_Male> incorporating a <Speech_Male> gas CHP <Speech_Male> engine or <Speech_Male> skids <Speech_Male> fascinating, <Speech_Male> so it really sounds <Speech_Male> like <Speech_Male> users can <Speech_Male> take advantage <Speech_Male> of this from any <Speech_Male> number of ways. <Speech_Male> Let me see if I can <Speech_Male> summarize three <Speech_Male> first <Speech_Male> lowering <Speech_Male> energy use, <Speech_Male> and hence the cost, <Speech_Male> the overall cost <Speech_Male> of energy <Speech_Male> to <Speech_Male> by avoiding <Speech_Male> peak demands. <Speech_Male> I also <Speech_Male> eliminate demand <Speech_Male> charges, which could be <Speech_Male> significant. <Speech_Male> And by moving <Speech_Male> from diesel, <Speech_Male> the natural gas <Speech_Male> we're lowering a users <Speech_Male> carbon footprint, <Speech_Male> thus making them <Speech_Male> more green would <Speech_Male> agree with those <Speech_Male> absolutely <Speech_Male> lou say <Speech_Male> one of the other big ones <Speech_Male> is with those <Speech_Male> efficiencies you mentioned. <Speech_Male> They're actually getting <Speech_Male> more out of that <Speech_Male> fuel. "Along with all the associated components for each of the circuits so. Some of these are the engine of course three way valves, pumps, temperature sensors, heat exchangers radiators. So as an example, the jacket water heat recovery is using the hot water from the engine cooling for process hotline like steam. The after -chool circuit, it's also producing hot water, but quite hot enough for steam application, but it can still be used for facilities hot water supply. Each of these processes are using heat exchangers, basically transferring heat from one medium to another typically going from. Hot Exhaust, gas or glycol to typically water and components here three wave valves, radiators pump's variable frequency drives or VFAT's I h knows blakey roles in these processes so managing the flow of water through that engines get. So My, what can facility owners expect to gain from using this type of CHP system? So yeah, that's a great question, probably the best one to answer all of this so as an example a recent project. We had a customer using roughly twenty one million kilowatts at twelve cents a kilowatt hour, so those roughly about two and a half million dollars in their. Cost. And then once we installed the CHP system remember to reduce that amount of energy that they needed to import from the ability. In drop that demand George Down to sixteen million kilowatts at four cents a kilowatt hour. In only had to pay for five thousand kilowatts at twelve cents per kilowatt hour because they're revolting the peak charges. With the maintenance costs in addition for gas and gas for the Gen set. And their energy costs was now about one point eight two million dollars. So that's about a seven hundred thousand dollar reduction. Plus the heat side of the CHP package will be providing them roughly fifty percent of their needed hot water,.

"Twenty years of experience switchgear generator, paralleling controls. He's part of caterpillars power integration team, as we finally called the pit crew, and we all call on Mike Steam quite often to help us through some of these more complex projects. Mike. Thank you for joining us today. Thanks for having me Lou. Appreciate it. Let's start at the beginning. What is combined heat and power or see HP as is often called in the industry? So CHP, it's also known as cogeneration, so it's basically the production of electric power through the Gen set, and then utilize that wasted heat associated with creating that electric power, which typically through the radiators, this creates more efficiencies through steam, hot water cooling applications with that. He threw the capture and utilization of that engines wasted heat the efficiency. The plant can reach. Let's say ninety percent or more as compared to a pure electric power application. Where the Gen sets, actually only using maybe forty two percent of the available system efficiency from the fuel. So, as an example in a typical non HP GEN set. Natural gas is used to power the engine generator set generating electricity. That generate electricity is used to power the facility, lewd or exported out to the utility grid. So the efficiency of that configurations approximately. Forty two percent, which is gonNA, leave you with near fifty eight percent of that fuel energy wasted so again as I mentioned. That's usually wasted out through the Raider, but when you adding CHP components in controls, increases the overall efficiency out to forty, two, forty, forty two. And this is accomplished by recovering the heat from the engine's exhaust, jacket water, and after cooler circuits and I'll talk a little bit more about that later. Then recovered he can produce steam, hot and or cold water, and it's depending on the heat exchangers used. Thanks Mike now before we dive into far, can you take us through maybe the key components of CHP installation and the role that they play. Sure, sure, so again as I mentioned before just production of and or cold water pins a lot on the heat exchangers. But one of the main things that we're looking for before we even start is a piping and instrumentation diagram or a Peon ID. This is basically a mechanical equivalent of a one line for us so from this week and identified exhausts jacket water after cooler..

No, it's it's really if you've got wordpress on your website, which most most people do the plug in the forms plug in there are a couple that are that are really good, really easy, but the one that I use called Ninja forms. K. and there's kind of like. What in the world of wordpress in website building? There's a world of like plug ins within plug INS, so you get the Ninja forms plug in but then you have to get the add on for the file upload, capability. All that does is say does is when you make a form. There's a big plus that says what kind of field do you want? Do you want a name? Do you WANNA email you phone number? Do you want a message box? But then one of those plus Fields. Is You know file upload? And what kind of mild do you want this person to upload and? so drag that over drag and drop, and then save your form and the cool thing. Is that because all of this is? Done by a bigger company, you don't have to code all of this yourself a works like on your phone, so you go on your your your cell phone and when you click the file upload button. You can actually it when you click that? It actually says do you? WanNa take a photo with your phone camera, or do you want to upload a farmer gallery? Yeah yeah from the gallery so. It automatically works. With your cell phone so. it's very straightforward once you get those kind of plug ins. Plug, ins going the other the other one if you are if you do any wordpress. If you do any website, stuff is the other. The other is called gravity forms, and they have the same the same features as Ninja forms. So what? What should I expect to have to pay for this one time fee recurring fee? What's what's I expect It's a one time fee to get it, but then now the these plug ins all have kind of annual updates that if you want the latest version, you gotta pay for the annual license, but you don't you're not required to. I think the annual license for mine informs. I have..

"Like what are you doing whereas and usually they get an answer and it's an immediate answer for one of the beings saying we are helping you and then I will say. Would you like to know how old they are helping you? And they do want to know that they ask and the being will say we are examining to see which of your organs is functioning well and which might not be functioning well and by the way you have a problem with your liver which you apparently have not known about and we suggest you go to your doctor back on earth and get him to check that or they will say you have a problem with such and such an organ and we are healing it so there are many many cases in which a person is really healed of something pretty serious something good about this and also that they feel like it's pretty good experience however isn't it also true this can be a very traumatic experience in their life. "Someone who's growing but when you're primarily treating older teens and adults. It's a lot more straightforward. It's a lot faster. And that's what she said. I had to get one in somewhere. You were bound to get one in there. That's what she said. Okay so you know. Those are some few things we had from doctors also. They just thought it couldn't be done. I had so many people say oh. You can't do it you can't do it can't do it. I'm like well. Here's a picture where I did it. You know it can be done. So let's let's expand on that for a little bit. How did you get into this rick? Go back in time your journey to becoming mister power. Approx Dr Power Prox- Well My dance danced and actually. He was a C. Junkie. And even while I was in dental school he took me to a lot of CE courses. I was fortunate enough to go to John. King ca course and go to a beacon of course for Rancho all. I was in dental school. One of the courses I went to was I think. Three quarters of an Ortho Continuum by Dr John wit six. I was very interested in all types of dentistry but I kind of really started to get interested in. Ortho I started to do. My first. Orthodontic case was actually started one month after I graduated from dental school so I started doing my first cases and they were more traditional comprehensive orthodontic cases and actually what the turning point the revelation for me was was I was also at the time. places like L. V. I pack live. Were really big. There were a lot of these veneer. Institutes everyone was talking about cosmetic Dentistry Formosan years. All that kind of thing and I had to patients come in the same week. Both were class division. Two's okay class to inclusion sentras way back laterals poking out a bit the Female patients she wanted veneers and the male patient wanted braces. I told the female patient. Yeah we can do veneers. Here you know went through. The whole process will be done in you know within a month. We'll be all done and she went ahead and actually did them and the The male patient who wanted braces. I'm like well yeah. We can straighten these teeth. But we have to fix the way these all these back teeth bite together. We have to do all these other things. It's GonNa take about eighteen to twenty four months and he just kept pointing to his one. Lateral incisors go. I just don't like this. I don't like this to straighten this tooth and I was like well. You can't do that then fast. Forward to veneer seat day on the on a lady patient. I'm checking The biton everything biting on their tickling paper and I realized the collusion on her teeth was basically the same exact inclusion on the guy. I told we had changed. The only difference was I. Put some porcelain on this girl and kept her. You know poster reclusion exactly the same but essentially refused to do it on the guy and then I kinda got to thinking well. Why can't you do that? And then I started to do some research in some old orthodontic books and articles and whatnot in found that they've actually done some kinds of treatments like this in the seventies but they did it is pre prosthetic so as to lineup some teeth before back then it was. I think decor crowns and things like that APPs. But I've actually done it have you so but it's like why can't you do it as a standalone cosmetic treatment and then? I kinda started to get into it and doing it that way. So that's kind of how the light bulb went on for me and that would have been some time in the mid to late nineties so I think there's a essential point there that and I remember when the light bulb went off in my head that back at that lunch that we're not addressing the patients post inclusion. If we're doing a bunch of veneers we don't care about it. We're basically putting porcelain on on their front teeth and whatever's happening in the posterior. That's what you said We don't really care and no one dies and you know there are certainly a percentage of patients were veneers are the appropriate thing to do. And that's great and I think there's probably a higher percentage of people that could benefit from worth. Oh and personally this is just a personal thing. I like the way natural teeth. Look versus You know a veneer case that you can as a dentist. You can spot from a mile away. Now appreciate the art and the beauty of all of the porcelain person and all that sort of stuff. But a patient's natural teeth to me are awesome. So let's GonNa flip it over now to Zach and Mac. What if you're what has been your training North or non training and Ortho and what are some of your hurdles in getting involved with Orthodontics in your practice Zach. You can go first so we did have to Wire up in band and arch in dental school. It was like you teamed up with another student in and you went through in that process Through the a graduate program at Um KC. And I gotTa tell you. I mean it's it sucked. I didn't I didn't I didn't like doing that. That much. Avenue all we face was because I didn't know what it was doing. It was brackets popping off everywhere in the case came out man and I don't know so I didn't have very good like start with it and then immediately when I joined my dad I didn't even think about Ortho for the first five years. But then when I started seeing some of Rick's staff and Ryan stuff I started to think. Well maybe this is something. I'd want joy. I WANNA get into some of this Ortho stuff. It seems like it'd be it'd be cool and he just was like now. I don't really think you got to do that. And I don't think that that doesn't sound right sound good and I gotta be honest the after that I can just just left it alone. I haven't really thought about it again until I started hearing about what you've done in airing with a lot of the influencers online or talking about within the liners and all that so now. I'm kind of repeat my interest. And how about you Max? So kind of a certain similar story there. I mean frankly I would say Ortho illiterate Our dental program at UNC was very focused on teaching us how to WHO in win to refer to an orthodontist The concepts of extra Tooth Movement. Our kind of ignored entity one case The one I inherited was from another dental student who was not able to finish it then. I did not finish it and whatever happened to it but nobody ever explained the concept behind while we were doing what we're doing it was literally just me coming in just moving brackets around Part of the professor there and Basically you know just Kinda was never that interested in it. More of an immediate result type guy where I wanNA. I WANNA walk Walkout have something done in approved But she kinda peaked. My interest a few weeks ago. We were talking about this and talking about that concept of of using a patient's natural teeth for veneers and I mean all the time I have adults you know point to that one little spot the rick mention you know. What can I do about this in APP? Just been illiterate to the point that I really know how affecting everything else and just help. Patients Honest and let's see what they say and they don't go or they go and they don't WanNa be embraces for two years doing a comprehensive case This just sounded like something. Maybe maybe we could add our practice pretty easily so so record. You have any responses to. Yeah well actually The fact that you know You were just kind of changing arch wires and doing things not knowing really why you were doing it where the end goal was to me. That's just a failure. You have to know where you're starting in where you WANNA go in visualize how you're going to get to the end and that's something that I focused heavily on. There's no sense knowing how to do something if you don't know why you're doing it. I pride myself on teaching you both of those things you know how to actually get it done but while you're doing it in the first place because then you can think your way through various clinical situations. You know very very very easily. You're beginning with the end in mind visualizing visualizing that end goal and. I'm showing you how to get from the beginning to that angle in a in a pretty straightforward step by step back so I wanna I WANNA say a couple of things here that back in that time when I first met you rick I was doing. What t-bone would say? Donald School Dentistry has doing fillings crowns and extractions and pretty much. That was it And I am going to say that. Yes you know Rick. You're my friend. I've said I've said this to you before though you are a great teacher you're a great You have a great ability to break down the this subject in particular and make it easy for the student to understand but not only that you're online forum. You're always available to answer questions and all that sort of stuff. But I would put myself in the Zack and Max camp out of dental school. I had no virtually no orthodontic training. It note was going on. I didn't know how to move it to this. I didn't know why they moved. Or are all that sort of stuff but Taking your class and watching a lot of the online modules as a refresher it all becomes a lot clearer and I I do think it enhances your ability to look at a cosmetic case with sort of to me. I've I've said this to you before it was like the blinders were lifted From from cosmetic evaluation of patients So we have about seven five seven minutes. Can you talk to us about where you're teaching now and how that's all happening now? I'm sure Well this year. This is the first year that we have decided to take a year off from from live teaching and focus on our online learning platform on that platform. We have you know Tons and tons of videos which you just mentioned a bit we have. I think it's twenty four hours of Learning material various levels from beginner all the way up to super advanced and a lot of doctors who've joined never seen me live there and are on that case support for him a lot if gone from zero percent. Ortho to fifty to seventy five percent earth though and I've never even met in person all over the world but you get food from them off. Naturally I do I gotTa Casado Gate just about a month or so ago from a guy from Jerusalem and I get candy from either the UK or Australia. A fair amount. So yeah I actually still do get from. I'm not ashamed. Asked for food is Kevin. Well knows but she had the online learning for a platform. That's spent actually most of my time now is helping With case the poor That's you know online learning platform you get all the seminars in the case support that you want so. The beauty of the online videos are being. Let's say you have a patient that you need to rotate a canine or something like that. Or you need to figure out how to shift their mid line and you saw that in class or you saw that on the online module there. It's broken down to you can just watch that part and refresh yourself a on how to accomplish those things. Know it's it's really slick And they're really well done Videos thanks appreciate it. Yeah so.

"So that's something I can change us. That's an easy change for me. I would like if you could post like a prep for a tiny chip so we can be okay. You know what we've been talking about that if you don't I'll tell you another help- helpful thing. I think it was Dr Melissa Zeitler years ago when I was talking about these said you need to prep it so that the composite is like a Taco. Yeah I remember. You talked about that long time ago and it was implying that like there needed to be a thick kind of a thicker layer. We're all the meat and Shell is kind of a area where the ship is and then there needs to be enough like. Shell on either side. Both buckle ailing will grab on so that it holds it and that that's also like prep designs also been kind of a a change for me as well on it but again like those. Those things work I feel like a micro hybrid is just. I feel like you gotTa have it. I don't I really just don't think any of these nanos are as strong as those classic Z. To fifties or. I'm sure Mike. I'm sure cosmetics is very dense and strong as well so I had two points. I thought of here. In one of the reasons we decided to do this was the whole podcast was kind of mentor younger. Dentist and kind of the board for them so never want when you have a patient that comes in one of these chips. First thing you should do is ask them how it broke. People Chew Fingernails Chew in Paris. Yeah Mail route and if they say well you know Biden fishing. Line the other day and it chipped just out front style right there and just say I could fill that hole. But you're going to break this again and especially Gills this tools That's what a Bob mortices lines. She juuled since tools to their jewels. Not Tools you continue to use them as tools. You're going to break this and you're gonNA break it somewhere else to so just for the viewer listeners. At home just remember Mac can fill your whole you know. That's that's that's you heard it here. I quit go ahead with way to keep it number two. Is You know wash. Get past that you look at the bite. I am sure you guys have dealt with this. Mike comes in with a chip. Maybe just fixed six months ago. The comeback chipped again their end in. I mean that's just a recipe for disaster in. How do you guys handle? Groom End Inpatient. You GotTa groom that Lower Interior. It's happen I I'm all for Manicuring that's what I call it. The lower interior scalp to to get them smoothed up. Sometimes it still happens How about do you guys have these lingle's of the lower incisors chip off embracing all? I'm not batting very well. With those either and that has to be a crossover a have to be doing something. Protruding past their AMAC's Larry incisors to get even get contact in that area. So you've got to ask those patients to do some really weird stuff with their with their teeth. Like we're we're sitting here looking at each other's like moving my mouth around and audio listeners. Don't get that but I mean they. They ended up doing some weird things like like slide forward like no way out in like grind way to the big. They're doing some weird stuff again. Most people say get a car. Yes a even on those lower interior once. I feel like you have to almost like maybe groom the inside the the lingual of the upper incisors or something. That's that's hitting against. That would be the facial orifice Suri Arda. You can't do much I don't know I can't do much with us. You got to get a lot of composite in there as much as much as you possibly can if you just if you replace only what they chipped. You're probably going to you. Know you're probably GONNA end up redoing it again for sure you it's like you gotta you gotTa make that thing bigger. You've gotTa have enough thickness composite. What are the Bio Claire? Guys tell you need like two millimeters like Max For Max Strength of the composite is that right Magnolia. I think is to mow meters over. Dentin you want okay. Okay all right. I thought it was all right. I misunderstood that I thought was they. They wanted you to to meet him leader of the composite for it to truly get the like advertised so I one of the things I'll to the little cluele pot holes which some people tie back into sleep apnea child like on lower first molar. You get that little pitting although they are really big fans of you actually reducing. That didn't down to get a little thicker over the composite over the dinner. Self a nail your good having pretty thin. Yeah if if the person is a nail biter you look down and some of them will admit but you gotta look at those Neal's but you almost before he asked the question because as soon as you ask if it's a nail biter they'll show hi those little. They'll hide those nails. You know they will. I've seen it happen too many times if there are a nail biter. I mean you know you gotta call him out on it because if you don't call them out on it there's I mean there's definitely no chance to win that that battle that's for sure Look at those nails on every on all that stuff. When they're all the where the nil I have. I've had a horrible time with nail biters An interior crowns filling all of it. You know they they can really tear that stuff up for ice tours press pretty bad too though mostly on you know back teeth more so than frontlines but still you're right. Ice Chewers Nail biters. Those ones are. Those are tough to tough to get a win on. Let's see where else to go with this? We pretty much went over our techniques all simultaneously so Kevin. Quick talking to Michael Probably order it. Tomorrow I gotta try something different. I've been banging my head against the wall doing the same thing over again. Something has to change. Here's the thing. I only have two shades. I have a one in eighth three Italian that Mike Riber. That's that's all by something light and something not as light and you can. You can always overlaid if it's really aesthetically conscious person for sure okay Where does a how big is a break to be before the composites over and it's time to start talking crown on the tooth? How how what's the? Let's get your guys breaking point so actually had one this morning on a gentleman and I think I have placed at six or seven years ago basically just completely d bonded. No recurrent decay or anything which was awesome. I would have had a pretty big went on the other side of the tooth on the digital. This is on the meal. Doesn't mill restoration rate? You know as I told him he said we're GONNA crown. That aren't we and I said you know what a Mac and easily do a crown I said what little to structure you have holding this thing up. I'M GONNA remove probably half of that to crown. So yes you may break this feeling again in six or seven years but have to their crown it in unveils. You're going to have a tooth and you will have a route. They're going to implant. That's Kinda my my tipping point is is a crown actually going to help the twos and if I can accomplish aesthetically what the patient wants directly. I'm going to do that all day every day. I I I'm kind of with you on that. Not only do I sometimes think like well. How much are they GONNA have left? But also I. I guess maybe 'cause I do a lot of bonding. I can match a single tooth with composite a little bit easier than I can. Match a single to the crown like. That's that's a tougher. Ask for me so I I'm more than willing to do it. Big Ass class four In the in the interest of aesthetics. Unless I'm going to be doing you know multiple units or something. Kevin how about you? Where's your where's your tipping point in this? I'm right with you guys. I mean there's a Lotta Times I'd much rather just do the large class floor. Because if you look at what you're GonNa have left is not going to be much however like this patient today. When we didn't November she said to me. Should we do a crown here and if you guys saw at? It's not a tooth that any any of US would think about crowning. Xm choosing like keep coming back for the so. I told her if sprague's again that's what we're GONNA do. And she was fine with. That wouldn't have been one that I need to do a full crown on. I could do a three quarter crown or you know basically a veneer or something like that but just the matching one too. That they don't have other stuff. The asset especially this was tooth number eight. If you saw to number nine the weird shape that had has trying to mirror image that it's not going to be easy at all and much easier to a disk away in in sort of make it symmetrical in composite. So it it. It's a dilemma but overall I'm probably as conservative on those guys are. I'm not quick to jump to a crown and anterior tooth especially early on where I made that mistake in patient walks in with the crown snapped off in their hand and the worst. What do you do? Yeah especially especially mid nineties or yeah. That was just bad so that changes your thinking a little bit. Do you guys have a different polishing protocol for these like bigger class fours than you would for like Like the class threes. That we talked about. Do you have any special disk or disk polishing systems that use? I know saw flexes very popular. What you guys do. So if I'm doing a class for like I said I'm real big onto the micro. Hybrid microbial layer restoration. At confidant makes these cash flexi disc on their specially made their micro Phil Sanders four grit sizes in the end There's this little polishing paste called NAM allies. There's little felt issues. Use that as stuff off. That's like the most fun thing I do in. My job is Polish Inez. It's like you get down about two or three grits and you're just like how this thing shot anymore and it's like you hit it with an analyze and it just takes it to a whole another level stuff and Mack Matt. Mack hits dental climax. Right there these magic mix on those those disks and they name-wise get the shadow so they do all that stuff. I'm doing a bio clear restoration and using the Phil Tech absolutely going to do the magic mix and then follow that up with a little jazz polisher. Do those flexi discs have a metal man's role in the middle or analog? The design is fairly ports. A square design is not round like the soft Lexus. So they really are. Kind of a pain asked Poplar off so we basically just order of manuals and when we were doing restorations have. This isn't squint. Setup all grits writer and I'll take out about you going off flex desks Like doing the bio clear Magic Mix and I did get some rockstar polishers. So those two so So I had soft lex for a while and I really hated that metal Manziel in the middle of I wanted to use like the whole surface of the disc. Almost if I was like doing. Yeah he's like an orbital wax on my car or something like that so shofu makes these Points called the super snap discs interesting same for Ford Grit System as anyone else except for. It's a little piece that fits onto like Fits onto a manual where there's not the not the metal piece in the middle. So you get you do get us that whole surface and and Polish on. I really like that you. Yes yes you do So I I really liked that. Super snapping super snap extreme. That's actually what I am using. Oh you are. You're a superstar user. Okay all right. Well then you know how that does a good job. So super snap system works well and the Estelita Sigma quick is polishes probably not quite as well as your microfilm. But you know it's damn close. It looks really nice when it gets done and I I use a Polish paced At the end on those they usually a nice. I shine and I agree. It is satisfying to get to finish polishing. Oh a well polishing composite. Get a good. Yuck Nice Finish on. It is satisfying. I'm with Mac. Never watched the videos with Jihan Kim user disc yes I have I learn more about how to use a disc just from watching her..

"Prepare to be clinically hacked. Hey Complex listeners. What is up? Welcome back for another episode of the clinical hacks and the gang is all here. We've got them. All we've got from Cleveland Ohio. Who Got Kevin Hair Fryer Kevin? What'S UP YO? Yo Yo how you guys doing. So Kevin and all the way from North Carolina. We've got Mac Dr Jones. What's up what's happening? Clinical Heck's world. We're here for another round table. We hope you enjoyed our bike guard discussion for last week or at least all the shade Mac through by guards and this week Kevin's got shade to throw on class. Four composites so we're gonNA talk about those class fours those chips those broken teeth and how we do it or don't do it. Wind do a crown when not to all that kind of good stuff here so Kevin. I feel like you've got a lot of Internal rage built up over the years from The thinly chipped teeth alternative like the hulk disguise. Yes tell us. tells what's gone tells what's gone right or wrong for you with the chipped. Teeth in class deposits. I think one of the I don't think the highest failure rate of any restorative practices those small little chips on a an insider It seems like the easiest fix in the world. You got plenty of Enamel. I know. The inclusion is part of the problem. Even if you saw that for at least for me I still get those things breaking off. It happened today. There was one I did in November that I just read today and it's been a a constant problem for years so I you know the binding protocol is the same as any other tooth in the in the arch. But they don't break like they do in the anterior. So I'm doing something. Wrong guys Kevin I guess telesis us with with a class. Four SM either small or large D use any kinda different Composite Material or. Are you going with your? I know you've used caloric in the past. You're currently using a filter. Universal is that just your go-to composite. What use what you use for a class for as well as a three hour to overuse never used anything different. I know don't think it's the composite that's the problem I think. It's the bonding ages. That's the problem but it's not a problem anywhere else in the arts so I don't know I don't know what my problem is. They're using Russian bond for those two Kevin now. I've used total at for those. Okay yeah I would never work so when you total at. What's your bonding agent? Kevin Still Rushland pro bond from okay. Spry which could be the problem are us? Sandra laster Kevin. No okay when you have a larger type class for Kevin. Do you have any like a layering protocol or anything like that? Are you kinda Amano Shade Shade Guy For the larger ones? I have greater success. So that's good. I guess I used to be a layer but I'm kind of switching over to being bio clear guy on those so and those look nicer we'll see how they hold up over time because it really started doing that recently. Mac tell us about a class four from a small chip to a monster. Break in in your office. What do you do anything different than you would for a classroom class three episode any thing different for the Ford as you would? The three depends on the situation. Anna certainly through peers of career ahead. Very high failure rates with these Had No failures ever write like hypothetical failure? Pathetically you heard about it. She didn't respect the bites. They always a lack of respect for the. Yes no but I feel like I had more in the past. And for starters. I was using Bonnie age of that much thicker film thickness early in my career. sort off the bonds. Solo plus Transition over choice. Npa which. I'm pretty sure like clones of each other. Pretty thick and I feel like I have those chip off left. And right using that bonding agent Switched over surpass Seven or eight years ago and then switched over to your Kuan recently whether those are fairly hills and very thin thin just minimizing that interface. They're getting that really thin. Also a big fan of either using a Micra Phil or micro In these areas I think there's something about having more uniform particle size in your composite that helps seems like the nano composites. That was used them for years with those just ship. Nothing So I can't really say whether the microphone or the microwave works better but I see a higher success rate than the Nano with A. Are you a sandblasted? Know what's bio blasts for the same as the Sam? I'm sorry I don't know Bicarbonate Kevin Yeah something like that What's not like the aluminum to stop and civil? It's not aluminum oxide. Not actually changing the enamel surface. You're just removing to bofill have used. That probably helps. But it's just too much too big a mess. I do think that there is something to that. So on today's Redo I disclosed and I just use to ultra sonic and pumice to get everything off that. I know that if I hadn't done that there's no way I would have seen all the crap that was on there so I have changed that recently. Who knows if that's going to matter or not but If you even after a babbling and all that sorta stuff The the amount of biofilm. That's there once you disclose it as I opening Kevin when you did when we talked class. Threes used a metal matrix. Like you would for like a class to last three composites for a class. Four where you don't have that you know that Incisa Edge are you shifting? You just mentioned you're doing like a thing. Obviously that's new to you. Where you using mylar strips or teflon tape before made this recent switch so back. In the day it would have been a mylar strip or teflon tape depending on the size of the repair and a bunch of factors that Jason Tooth and all that sort of thing but yet that's how I did it. How about you Mac? What's what's a matrix you would use. Are you bio clear on these so for like a really large class? Four and a half two ways. I'll go with this one. Being by clear and Dave Clark will talk a lot about having that monitored block of composite in really thinking more of like a syrup block that you're basically going out Israel early. I think there definitely is something to that Yet really don't see the chipping on the insides. Alleges Big Class Method on the other thing I will do is pray Putty stint in the core of that back mountain. And I'll put like a palatal layer. Excuse me polite to layer here. You go micro hybrid. They're impressed that to the palatial make little palatial. Shell and I actually a lot of times. Use like the little metal trio matrix which I think is what Kevin was using Use that kind of make that embraer shaped Embraer and usually lay over that with Microfilm Phil Good Really Nice Polish on the facial surface are you using cosmonauts micro hybrid and Microfilm for both of those thing. Yes yeah I think there are still some other Mike robbers in the market? But I that's the only microfilmed no of yeah boy brandon. I've seen at least the most advertised. It's definitely the most advocacy for aesthetic purposes. Helium molar still an active micro phil but it it looks terrible for interior work I'm pretty sure that Oh Gosh what's Kerr's product like Durham Why would they name something helium molar? The anterior it's not. It's not a micro Habra. It on helium molar is definitely not a micro hybrid is definitely microbial bad. I know for sure. And it doesn't doesn't have terrible about though. Microsoft is Hercules. The original hectoliters definitely micro hybrid. There's there's another. There's another micro. But there they are few and far between and that's for sure Mac Total etch on a class four for usually selective edge with Kulwant Interesting that Amel sure. Okay does bio clear? Have you doing a pretty massive bebel absolutely and I found effort? Adopting the bipolar method. That that I found a much bigger. Beverly even if I'm not using it. Yeah I found that to I would say I like big bubbles and I cannot live on the but definitely I just a increased surface area of some cut enamel definitely helps but is also the problem on the smaller chips. I WanNa take half the tooth away for a tiny little nothing. The Best of those actually is if you can just moved off and yes that avoiding is sometimes the best policy there but sometimes it looks like show and I. Yeah there you go. Maybe if we made them a night guard they don't have an icon. They'll go ahead and where down flat to mack? How do you? How do you deal with the the tiny chips? Where you're not GONNA do all that. Larry. I mean there's like there's so little little Gandhi just turn a small chip into a bigger class four to make it a winner or what's yours. What's your strategy there? Topa if we're talking about just like nestle edge corner off told patient. I'm like a corner. Let's talk about like not at the edge where you just smooth it off. I'm talking like you've you've got enough corner. That looks bad. Yeah I gotTa do somethin' pills situation but I've gotten pretty big on the micro habit even those not quite as aesthetic an older patient which probably be your patient is going to have that little chip there. Maybe like they had a little class three and they've chip that little bit of an ailing. They're going in with that because I mean they. They don't actually want something. That looks awesome. They just want something. That's GONNA stay. It's not going break. Mac is cosmic since micro hybrid. Would you say that is a very opaque or translucent material? Say He's probably in between. I mean it's not it's really not as uglies what people think of as as a micro. Habur but compare the Microfilm. Microfiche polishes absolutely amazing. You put a pretty small layer of that on the facial just to have that Polish there but I really liked the bulk of it to be that micro habit okay. So I used to hate the small chips just like Kevin and it was. It was my most failed restoration for sure. I'm getting this vision of tiny chips wearing tiny mom jeans. That is they might. They might do. It is it's mostly women. It seems like the chip those things at least call in Boreham so they maybe they do wear mom jeans good point there. So here's here's what I have done to make the class four a like heavily failed thing where it's like God. I hope this last like you know a year for him to like. Hey you know what I think. I think I'm actually going to get some time out of this one. I feel like turning the smaller class for into a larger class for really did DID HELP. Kinda I kinda I shift my mindset away from Lenka. I'm taking away more. Amel in to to. I need to get something that just works here. That's that needs to be the main the main goal Almost like the way we deal with crack teeth by drilling a bunch more to put a crown on it. I think as you know as you know I just needed you. Send the work's not not really worried about the enamel as much that was one of them to the biggest change. Macaroni legit micro hybrid. I we have been sold a bill goods in my opinion on these nanno hybrids trying to be the perfect combination of awesome. Polish and high strength and the micro hybrid. They they just chip last. I think they worked better So I I use E to fifty which is three. M's micro hybrid on most of my Class ships on the lower interior. Ones that chip. That's the whole restoration is in the fifty on the upper anterior. It's so translucent that especially the optical wanted is going to be really bad so a layer the front of it with my as slide signal quick. That's kind of like my micro fill even though it's technically not a micro fill at still got that universal particle size. You're talking about Mac So I'll do that to make like optically look better in Polish better But that has been huge sandblasting committing to sandblasting them. has been also. I feel like a winner for me. I think it was. Ray said that if you sandblast something the bond string doubles compared to a conventional etch So I've just stuck with that I they all get sandblasted So the Danville make writers. Do I have a Danville micro at your and I. I only had one. Like one of my three ops. I just was like all right. These are all getting richer so that it's not even an issue. So they all get sandblasted. They all get total etched. They all get a thin film. Thickness bonding agent. I'm using the same stuff as Mac and They all get some micro hybrid as at least most or or all of the The build on them and they all get massive massive bubbles And some usual like a sometimes a little retention groove Alec drilling for drilling like some little retention areas and I feel pretty good about the the small to medium medium class force. Now I don't I don't know how the breakage don't have to call backs And I think the biggest thing was for me to decide that a tiny chip that repairing it with a tiny amount of composite. Especially if not very strong composite was that was just wasn't GonNa work so that M- that mindset shift converted failure into a mostly successful restoration for me again. I'M NOT PERFECT. Donham not batting a thousand but like my batting average. You know skyrocket after after a few those changes that I mentioned so I have the availability to use the macaroni and every op..

In It for the Long Haul

"Your hustle and all the other radio topiary shows are producing episodes on a trucking related theme. The long haul and this is ours. You know what night over the road kind of reminds me of us. Everyone knew about prison but they didn't know what life was really like. Oh that's true. And we all see those trucks on the highway. But God knows what daily life entails. Wait a minute get it. I'm sorry but it's a Little Cup your coochie and then it has a little spout in the up through it but if you really bad the pressure would just go all over the place. And so I actually don't even use it. It's for when you have a really low stream you WanNa just take your time is slowly but can you. Can you use it while you're driving or you have to pull over? You'd have to pull over. Yeah there there you just get. Pow's yeah but no. I I never have a problem all right enough of that. Eric told us she's been driving for about three years and she drives. What's called a day cab? So there's no sleeping compartment and she doesn't do long hauls like Paul and that's not because she's on parole in can't cross state lines no. She's not on parole at all. The reason she doesn't do long-haul is because she has cats and bring a lot a lot of it as she doesn't want to leave him alone for too long right. Erika Toda set aside from the fact that it takes her away from her cats. She loves almost everything else about the job. There's the freedom. The fact that driving a truck takes all of her energy and focus. She likes it. There's a Lotta multitasking. Although sometimes she says she sees people doing a questionable types of multi tasking. I saw one guy looking through the pages of a Playboy magazine. Once that was weird I was going to take a picture and when he saw that I was looking at him. I had to pretend like I was like while he was driving. His Dome Light was on and he was traveling right next to me and he was just flipping through pictures of naked girls. And I'm like wow. There is one thing she really does not like about. The job is not the job exactly is some of the other truckers male truckers would. I don't like this very insulting is when other truck drivers. See me coming out of the cab and they asked me. If I'm driving an automatic. Why would it be automatic? Why do you think I can't shift think I I can't float my gears? That's weird and you might have guessed. Eric doesn't look like a stereotypical truckdriver. Look like I realized. I'm becky myself into a corner and you know what I am. Definitely someone who needs to listen to over the road because is actually going to inform me moonwalking. So what I'm going to say is that to my present mind. She doesn't look like a stereotypical truckdriver she superfit. She's pretty and she pays a lot of attention to look Erica. She's a bee's she's not to be fucked with me. Spent twenty years in the Peon and actually back before she got in trouble with the law. She wanted to beat a law. That's right she wanted to be a cop a constable on patrol now while she's out driving it's like she's part of the highway patrol. I'm on the phone to the cops all the time. I see crazy shit. What do you mean? You're the cops all the time? There's crazy stuff going on the freeway all the time like Ali driving and then there's a ladder I call the cops on like I am number two lane Northbound eight eighty. There is a ladder and and I don't know who dropped it and then a few minutes later I'll call back like didn't you just call me. I said Yeah. But there's a mattress on the freeway. Now I didn't know that people called that's that's all day long. What number do you cautious when one or the regular CHP number CHP is the acronym for California Highway Patrol? I didn't know that's how they got if I call nine one one and and it doesn't connect me to see hp than the the operator disconnects me see HP. I've only stopped one time. But that's because there was somebody in the in the fast lane trying to make people stop and they were waving their arms and they were standing in the Fast Lane. They got into an accident in their car was up against the side Wall Medium. Call Nine one one and I rolled the window down and I started screaming at the person. Getting your car getting your car. Now get off the freeway and then the person who is waving heard it was my voice and she was a teenager and she had been drinking and her face was split open and she was trying to get people on the freeway to stop in the Fast Lane. And so I'm looking at this girl bitch. You're about to die. She didn't die because Erica. Was there on the phone with the. Chp Erica told. She sees a lot of scary shit out there while she's driving around and she also had a few close calls borough one day. She was getting off the freeway and her brakes failed. I felt like I just had to do what the hell do. Keep from killing anybody. I was Coming Downhill on Airport Boulevard in Stockton and I lost my breaks all the way to the floor. It was just absolutely nothing. I couldn't change gears because my RPM's for just so high. I my my gear. Shift was locked in. I was just driving right into the intersection and my light turned red and their light turned green and nobody could see that. I was having a problem and the cars started going in the car right in front of me. It was just enough to where I made a left in a whipped around him may like a C- like ch and then and then I jack knifed to stop and I destroyed a trailer because I was carrying doubles and there were tomatoes and and I completely demolished the light signal box. But I couldn't stop.

"Have a mack. How about you lie to Kane on the for PAT palacials usually set the game saying because yeah we'll give a maybe a quarter car fuel in Iran a great deal on the buffalo for the infiltration? Okay all right it. I think I'M GONNA I don't think we need to talk about Maximo pre molars are incisors. There's not much to say with. Do you guys want to talk about those at all or not not really okay for those of you heads just kidding. When there's a failure failure to numb on a upper upper molar where do what are you guys? What's the sequence of troubleshooting for upper? Uh upper don't do this ever happened. Kevin rare time that has ever happened. I've actually gone more musial easy oil like I just think of like a field of anesthesia. So I'M GONNA go more museum and maybe go more. Just wait a little bit of time. And they're probably not after that it just possible that someone has some weird anatomy that you just didn't block that nerve but it's such a rarity in the opt out of course it's going to happen to us all tomorrow but It's it's a rarity I I so I guess I'm the one who sucks. I've had my fair share of upper second molar. That haven't done that. I'm sure again. I'm sure it's a moral failure on on my end but It seems like my solution is is to do like almost a PSA ESA type of type of shot really back in and get that block in and then that's that's generally the solution to the problem so as that's been my troubleshooting for and that's why I get harp. Seals like one is over the ceremony. Ones over the museum buckle route that whatever weird anatomy that might be back there. It's all it's done. We're just moving on. Are you given that same. carpools if you're doing like a eight or nine though no that's difference Gennifer for molars okay. All right. That's cool and I I should probably adopt the same damn thing. I mean sounds good all right. Let's get down to the lower because that's where we're a more of the problems happen. I assume all of us are a block blockers. Is that right Kevin back back Max tell them now is that you. Mac is at an So Kevin the are you a double double block. Yeah so I have the same theory of the field of anesthesia so What I'll do is is all I'll give the first block in sort of the traditional spot like which would sort of be right in the middle of the Ramos or whatever Yep the second one's GonNa go higher than that and then half of it and then half of it's going to go lower than that and then we're going to wait ten minutes and probably get rock and after that you know not eighty five ninety percent of the time that's good enough But if I won buckled long buckler hardly ever give that unless I'm packing coordinator feeling it I'll I'll give it done uh-huh Mac what's your what's your block Block so You know it comes two blocks. I think a lot of it has to do technique and taught about some different options. This before with buffering and all that stuff into me there's a lot of solutions to problems that don't exist or don't exist but what it boils down to his anatomy and they're not doing their anatomy or not respecting it and If I'm doing a block back there I'm having a finger along that Lingua on that Ramos Amos and I'll just pal that up and try to go about ten millimeters above the third molar which is usually not there so you kind of have to visualize generally generally that area and That needle in and I wanted to pretty much go to death in contact book. If I don't hit bone I know about in the right spot in if I hit boone tim millimeters Not In the right spot and we'll try to Kinda change angle or change direction from there But I generally do just one one injection election there Just depending on what I find if if I do go deep and don't get bone you know might inject a little bit there to get some deeper anesthesia for when I go back in there But another big fear is if I go in two or three times that I'm not getting the sweet spot. I'm taking that needle off. Get a fresh needle because they they will dole like hill if you contact boom. They're in the wrong spot. But fresh needle Kinda glad back into place made much more comfortable for the patient not only them but after the procedure when it wakes up But generally just doing the one corporal. There I'm big on doing a main dealer. Infiltration the buckle was separate gain for any crown. Prep I do. I'm doing that into doing that. maybe your average class one. I'm not but maybe class to might just kind of like what Kevin talked about Casting a wide net in just I wanna hit it from a couple of different angles atom have stop and do it again. Let's just maybe I don't need that. Corporal CEPA KANE on the buckle goal but damn sure not gonNA hurt so I I do want to clarify. I'm using two separate syringes. So there's two separate needles BE TO MAX x point. I don't WanNa be re-injecting especially when with thirty gauge your discontinuing rip through tissue. And I know I'm going to get a call in a day and and a half or two days later so amusing to separate bridges. That's that is interesting. I I'm I'm kind of like Mack. I I need to finger the lingua but more like That's I like that Makhaya need to. I need to get more into that But I. I will walk with the White Cane and end unless it's just an operative procedure I'm probably GonNa get along buckle and it's probably with with Especially I'm I'M GONNA clamp. I'm usually GONNA rubber dam. The things things are gonNA clamp it's especially if it's indoor crown prep. I know I'm going to be packing court and whatnot. I'm that long. Buckles almost always always happening. I think the only only downside along buckles I think you can get some false lip numbness if That you don't you don't get to find out that she missed your Mr Block so that that's the only that's the only down I will say. Sometimes if I if I'm in doubt on my block I'll just walk out. Just give it a few minutes Come back three or four minutes later and see if they're getting that lip anesthesia. Do that Buffalo Infiltraton if they're not getting it obviously back into it other block if you're banned Anesthesia fails on you. What is your next are you gonNA reblock. Are you gonNA start doing a four corner PD l.. What's your next? which your next move Kevin? So I think you have to have a flow flow flow chart in your head of what's what's happening. So if they have lip sign an tongue sign and sometimes I'll poke him with an explorer in around the canine area. And they're they're not flinching to that but the tooth's they're obviously feeling your crown prep or whatever I will The the first thing I'll do is probably give them another. I will give them an infiltration if it's tooth number one thousand nine. Let's first molar. Yup I'll give them an infiltration right there. You're if the with up to gain if that doesn't work then I'm GonNa do appeal and ninety nine percent of the time. That's it's good enough for me. I will say this when I was a younger dentist that used to frustrate the heck Outta me and it showed like the patient starting to get anxious. I'm starting to get anxious and you get into the spiral of thing. It's not good for anyone now. I just you know very logical about it. I'm going to give you the invitation here. You're good let's get going. You're still not let me give you the PD l.. You're probably GONNA be not after that. Let's let's rock after that about you. Mac what you're I mean. If I know you haven't actually had blocked failed but if you were to or if someone you knew how to figure what would you tell theoretically would i. Would you know I mean of course it happens. Let's do a crown. Prep on number nineteen. I'm going to go ahead and have that buffalo infiltration on board from the get-go saying pretty much of limiting met with short I'm tip. We're going to go back and do another block. And what are typically find is that frame is usually gonna be a little bit higher. The what you expect Go in that direction again. Makes Contact Boone at the right depth. give that a few minutes Some patients have like a super prominent lingua in issue. You can't get around it sometimes. It seems and in those patients. If I've already gone four or five different places and I've done a couple of blocks Still not getting anesthesia may jump right up to a PD L. injection in that situation One Important Thing to Mitch Surfing Own. All this is that I think the clinician attitude can play a big part in this in particular with the crown I'm using electric ham pieces. and Ed. You can get little bits and pieces fly off might hit the patient's cheek they flinch. I felt that well. There's not hopeful in if you freak out as a clinician addition screeching halt. Oh my God what's going on. Are you feeling that they since your apprehension about it. They're going to start feeling every little thing Never to return to agree you gotTa Roll with things just say Oh you know well okay. Let's see how the spot feels over here. You know just kind of keep rolling with it and if they're not no you're going to know it and you got to do something about that but I I think so. Many times we put that thought in the patient's hit because we freak out and experience to the NFL So let's let's talk about maybe some operative procedures on the lower on the front the front ten are you blocking for a filling on a premolar or canine nine or a or an incised. Knit heaven now. Those will all be local. Local infiltrations was going to gain the maximum again creation subjugation. On now. How about if if it's if crown prep on a promoter will will you block that or or infiltration alday on even on the Primorsky? How about you can't infiltrate you'll infiltrate how do you get the lingual gum number? I'm for your core. Most the time it's now if not I'll just slide some in there from the lingual same thing it like. It's a palatal. I'll just put some pressure there and pop it and move on. You guys had that not work and then have to go back and give that block after all rarely I mean not not not not very often I agree And that's the best that that's my favorite thing about Septa. Can I think is the ability to all of a sudden now work on these you know incisors without without that happened to give that huge blocks so may I think a I think we covered anesthesia about as good as we needed needed to. We didn't talk about post op complications. That might be a something for different shirts in a final tips. Tricks are anything to add short the needles into your anatomy. There you go. Kevin hit bone on that block. That's if not you don't know where you're.

in a great mood today if so you might WanNa choose one of our different episodes Are you feeling depressed and would you like to deepen your depression this is the episode for you because we are going to talk about failures on how we deal with them now first of all be preempted by saying that Mack Jones is in your thirteen of clinical practices that right right mack thirteen fourteen off with fourteen years the teen years or July okay well fort here's an actually he's he's still not experienced failure yet so that's that's raising so he's going to talk about the theory of failure I suspect listen to you guys go right about now Kevin Tonight though we're not as good because we we have experienced a little bit of failure here and there so let's just let's just get this out of the way what's like your most epic fail aw Kevin do you have like an epic fail in mind yeah I was thinking about this over the past couple of days I had a patient that I think I did an this is like fifteen years ago I did an m o on him and it was deep and it ended up needed a rookie how so I brought him back in did the root canal or started to do the recount I think I perfect send them to the end and the teeth needed to extract did I mean of course he was through with me at that point so Y- hopefully as an implant out there in You know this well before any Google reviews are yelp reviews but Bat one was tough a number of of screw ups did you guys remember the show Er yes yes there was an episode where someone came in like with a cold or some minor ailment like first aid sort of thing but the they fell off the Gurney in his head and another thing happened in other thing happened and they ended up dead that's how I felt over that investigation sided to go to dental school. yeah okay so I have to on par with each other first of all I was doing an endo on my dad onto thirty I did not have a bite block in he kind of bit down on me but I I can't blame it on him he was Nitrous Stop Snape file off my dad that tooth is now an implant so that was a professional low moment when you AK- file off in Your Own Dad also dentist by the way in case you haven't did that so that sucked the other one was around house bridge and and I hate to talk about the fact that I felt like the lab kind of bone me on this because it's on me at the end but they had a weird designed for this round house where it was like in three parts like they had like a key way for the three parts of thing never do not do that not to that because that went badly on me within about five years of it being done and that was me having to replace the whole thing thing at my cost time that cost me I mean you you guys know what the lab bill would be on like twelve hundred thing and how much time it takes to cut one off temporizing do another dog owners days of days of working for for nothing so that was his That was a big that was a big fail they cost me a lot of money and I learned a lot of lessons on in terms of stand up for yourself with your labs and stuff like that so that was my now Mac I know while you haven't personally experienced probably heard people's failures so maybe you could just tell us about one and you've you've heard about or maybe you rescued dentist who had a failure shockingly I'm not one hundred percent perfect but what what won't stored emission and I will say that it's early enough in my career and I was ignorant enough to that I'm not actually going to count this as a failure I was probably it may be a month or two hundred associates ship in we had this old retired doctor who still dropped by cases going on the scowl so old school you come in smoking a cigarette like in the office you would smell them before the sea of covent and he walks in one day he's like junior he's like give me back here I've got this toothache number fifteen and I said well you know I don't really do Mola root canals with let's Let's get sure there was no rubber damage ball I don't know that we've had a rubber dam in that office but you drill and drill drill calcified to hell and fun so you know get a file on their x ray it's out the digital your mom on the plus side I was so bad that day so ignorant I was still like an enamel where the perf was there actually saved tooth on who does it still they are moved on shortly thereafter but I would say that was an epic failure but yours had a happy ending now that's that's a nice story about the happy endings is yes he is have I want to know if failures have maybe shaped your is practice anyway like if there are there are procedures that you might have done or consider doing that you've kind of gotten rid of because you're just like I I can't take this this is isn't for me it it it doesn't it doesn't go my way any any particular any particular things that come to mind that you were a failure as his call as you to either rethink what you're doing or do it completely different or whatever just speak to that Mac I've got sore two examples that kind of skew off in different direction awesome number will be dentures and I don't do a lot of dentures anymore in district one of the things that you know failures such a gray area on that That is a procedure that just never felt I had a lot of control over you would do things the way I thought was the right way in the end of the day when the final delivery comes in the patient may hate it come back to the point about it so app just kind of gravitated away from doing a lot of dentures that's kind of shaped my practice good bit but in a positive way gave the example about the Rica now perf yeah I didn't feel like it was very good at Endo and we talked about this another podcast made a commitment to get better and learn more about it and drastically shaped my my practice do a ton of Indo now what my patients out because you know our access to thirty five miles away so tremendous help to the patients and failures can it can be good or bad thanks so you took one failure decided I don't want any part of this you take another failure decided that you do something about it you gotta get a bigger part of your off skip how about how about you can how failures shaped your procedure offerings one thing comes to mind have you guys ever extracted a number fifteen or sixteen in half the appropriate comes away and you got an expose sinus and for the whole Tuber the whole tuber acidy never happened to me all right have you ever had that happen have you ever extracted that twos two days before Christmas than be in your office on Christmas Day because the pain patients in a lot of pain and you feel really bad and so tough at that patient in that incident comes to mind a lot when I do have to extract another number fifteen or number two or whatever it is so it's just caused me to go slower section the tooth if I need to you know if it's appropriate I still get a little lightening of the center on those and the interesting thing is you know went along for years without that happening and then Bennett habit all it takes is one time of something at and then it's always on your on your mind so that's a good thing in a bad thing so I think that that one thing it it does make me think it also makes me refer some of those out if I think bones role Denson it's going to be a problem you know so I haven't had that particular exact problem with like a fifteen or sixteen extractions in general have kind of been my I had such a failure of a myriad failures have been school and so I graduated thinking that like guy that's just not something I'm GonNa do unless it's a slam slam dunk scenario it it has taken me you know over over ten years of practice to develop enough confidence in them that I'm starting to feel feel pretty good about doing them so it watch one I didn't WanNa do one I'd want to read about or think about 'em so that really you know failures at the school level shaped me on on that and then I think dentures another when kind of like WHAT MAC was talking about if a couple bad ones where it just goes really south can make just say all right forget it and woodrow quick That I I'm okay doing them right now but I also took the education I wanted to turn that around to feel like I was at least competent he I don't really care for him very much so those are some ways you know villiers shaped me for sure we're going to go through a couple failures common or semi common failure scenarios I WanNa see just what you guys would do if this happened to you at your office so failure scenario one is our is kind of a classic one failure to diagnose I think we've all had this scenario where we we missed a missed a class two cavity and you know an entire year goes by before you get that next bite wing maybe two who knows betting on insurances and whatnot and now you've got a problem now what what you could have done as a class two composite is now you know a d an endo certainly possible internally you know I'm not perfect sometimes you miss stuff there's a lot of stuff going on the day and I I like to think that I'm getting the majority of everything but stuff happens and sometimes things slip through the cracks.

"The name of friendship or trying to empathetic to somebody but also so it's easier to not get involved. You know what I mean. It's just a little problem so for them as young girls but as we see the handmaid's tale getting too close to another woman's quote unquote disgrace in Gilead can really be actually threatening to your own livelihood and laugh I mean it's not as if they can back up some other women who says something was done to her and defended her without consequences instances for themselves true. There's so it just seems to me like the the teaching of girls that like you stay out of each other's business because who knows how that I'll look for you to start. Just starts like really young grooming them. I guess that's kind of how passionate yeah other people's problems the other women's problems yeah. I guess that's sort of when I read it. I thought wow they internalize that. Really young can't so sad bond or sympathizer sympathizer anything like that. I mean I think it makes sense in terms of like men wanting to oppress women of course you wouldn't want up to like bond together or for anyone. That's like a a key role of war. Is You separate and turn against one another. You're yeah yeah that's what Lydia says. She's going to do to the on such a divide and conquer to make in her favor yeah which she started to to do at the end of Lydia's last section because one of the ONS came to her and was like hey this is happening. I think this other aunt is trying to get up on you yeah yeah. I think she's doing doing it to make it look worse than it is or more like your idolatry like the the The statue and then Lydia's like ooh. I never thought she would come up to be used to hate my guts but now this you know when you're like. Oh God there's definitely that playing with power and I guess that's kind of. I don't think that Agnes no necessarily playing with power when she says Oh. I'm not going to be involved with second because I don't want her to rub off on me right but I do think she's understanding the dynamics of what happens when you you have some like you said somebody who's GonNa. Bring you down by association and that could be catastrophic. It's not just like a these. Three girls at school. Don't like me anymore. It's like you can no longer Mary a nice person and then Becca slashes her wrist. Yeah Becca Sasha's her west with a second tours which I assume are scissors. It's interesting. The ants response to that which is that girl is immature. You know like like everyone. One isn't seeing what's happening yeah. Everyone knows what's going on. Everyone knows that she's terrified and she's been abused and she doesn't want to do anything involving a man and you know it's just it's terrible and she goes further to to divide the girls on. Mike you guys right all snug Nice. I mean I want to say that. I was surprised about any of that but I was kind of like. Oh yeah that happened to me. I was like I mean and honestly if anything and Gilead I'm shocked. It doesn't happen often like they must have done a really good job taking away all opportunities yeah. You'd have to be really creative to try to pull that off and I guess that's the idea so then I mean chapter. Thirteen is named again sectors. That's the next thing that we're reading. Oh that's the title of the next section which is a little scary Hi but I always have to mentally prepare myself for the book and the show and how it's GonNa make me feel feelings so this is nothing a new and it looks up. It looks like next section. We're opening up with Lydia again is like like it so interesting. She's definitely still the character I look forward to hearing from the most yeah yeah still a surprise to me. I would have thought more individual girls who were hearing about as witness. Testimony would've been more interesting yeah. I would learn a lot more but I feel like I'm just so caught up in their lake young personal things yeah. I'm getting a lot less out of it. I feel like agnes prime to have a much more interesting in story coming up because she doesn't want to get married. She's not seeing she's seen Becca for the real person and how issues having and she seems the most like she could turn to being radical against her what she's which is currently facing or as daisy. I feel like even if if it's not like daisies gonNA turn into somebody who believes in the Gilliat beliefs you know she's GonNa her. Paths Celsius set like whatever she does. It's going to be because mayday told her to think unless she just wanted makes a mistake to using media would ever have her like murder herself. I mean she is quite a symbol on both sides. Oh my gosh I thought about that when they first mentioned sending her back yeah yeah the mention of going back seems like martyring or yes but and I guess it doesn't necessarily have to be you know there are lots of theoretically lots of people who survive working for mayday in Gilead I don't know how their lives really turnover but clearly there are operatives working within Gilly. I guess yes. I don't know the whole thing felt kind of rushed like yeah. I don't know sketchy. Not well thought out yeah anytime. You're sending a teenager in to your your person going into you know the battlefield. It's probably not super. Well thought out or or like concern for that. person's well being is not the number one incineration yeah well. I think you know a lot like we see in the show. Half of her existence is being symbol. Only half of her existence is really like her life and maybe I'm sorry she's not that developed of a character because Atwood didn't want the reader to get too attached possible. She doesn't make it. I think Tusla's it seems like a long lead in to let somebody not developed so that you don't get attached. I guess but still I don't know I'm thinking about this now but made any sort of treating daisy or Nicole kind of like like you said like a symbol. She's not like a real person much like about the same. Gilead is treating their women. There's like a interesting parallel of like you're doing something for the good of people but they're still that common common thread between like using somebody to to sacrifice cut to further your because just like the handmaid's who had the baby and died and wasn't help like. Nicole is not choosing this. She said we'll maybe I'll think about it and they're like you're doing it and she knows Oh. She's I mean whatever it is they they're having do. She's risking her life so she is also upon for for May Day. which is I don't know why I find it really interesting that you're trying these lines because of how often you've said they hurt really reminds you so much of way novels about young women because in every way way novel about young women that I can think of in recent times they have definitely gone through this period where they're like but my own people are treating only a simple to they just want me to do you want me to do because it furthers their cause mocking Jason Yeah? It's I mean it's a common thread in at least current white levels focusing on girls else. That's an interesting. I couldn't say that about all. Ryan you know historically way focusing girls but that seems very interesting to me that would be a read Waie with female characters. Maybe eventually they rebel the big breakthrough in there the hero so maybe that'll happen with on their own terms on their terms wants to discover who they are as a person so we have to wait for Nicole to figure. You're out like a field he needed now. You're sure Liam. I wished I had to go back to be like you know what Send Me Send Me Man mm-hmm similar to other books too though I volunteer as tribute but I do. I want to go back and reread though I know I don't want to forget to mention. You guys wanted to talk a little bit about the cover of this book. Yes thank you for the reminder yeah okay. Let me hear it out a little bit due at so the cover it for this book is so genius for readers who are reading it in in kindle format or getting on audiobook. I'm sorry you probably don't get to see that cover and are not getting the full effect if you if you have not really thought about this before and you you have a print edition in front of you full that cover out so that you see the spine and the front and the back all at the same time and really look at the small spaces so so the use of negative spaces here is so interesting to me to tie these girls together we know from going through the chapters that these are representative of Agnes in Daisy they each get assemble at the beginning of their chapter. It's a pen when it's Libya. It's a Lake Nick hooded clearly mayday figure for Agnes and for daisy. It's like typical teenager girl look with a ponytail and an earring but if you look at what would be white spaces they're blue in this case the negative spaces of the cloak over daisy. It's a young girl with a ponytail reaching teaching up and if you look at the negative space behind a daisies head between her head and her ponytail. It's a cloaked figure. This makes me so happy. It's such a nice little thing that is not nodded to anywhere else to make sure that you notice it. It's just if you you have the physical book in front of you spend any amount of time looking at it. You will definitely notice at least the front. I don't know that everybody would notice the back. I didn't notice it until oh I suck it up on my window. Sill just could get out of the way of my kids so my bets and I was like there's a woman there. Hannah happinesses coke doc but I did not notice the other one that you just mentioned until back yeah yeah. This is really good. Use of negative space minimalism awesome especially with the limited color Palette Color Palette is John Point to the Matt Navy like almost midnight night blue hue with a very very very shiny lime green and bright white is kind of arresting look out which I think is highly appropriate for this book yeah so I think you know we got a lot of good back story about what the Revolution Look Blake which was fascinating and sorely-needed. I hope we get even more yeah. I'm I'm just never I will never cease to be interested in how that went from lots of different perspectives vol in we got we still got you know a fair amount amount of boring stuff but you know it's important to fly to propel it along so subtle forward. Who is the source. That's I don't know and I WANNA know if daisy can or will succeed in this operation shoes or will the good note yeah not just well she yeah because Kimchi I'm wondering if we'll see aunt Lydia get back at the commander because she made that vow yeah back at them and I'm wondering what's going to happen to Agnes and Beca because Agnes seems pretty distraught and Becca clearly is distraught and I wanna know how their stories are wrap up. Yeah I will be really interested to see if we keep hearing about Becca after Agnes. Gets married is basically entering into a new storyline wave I recall she ended up as an aunt and like you predictions retrieve. I don't know if I think that would be cool. I was kind of freaked picked out by that when I I thought that based on I don't know on that random sentence. Is that worse than being wife I don't no no it's all pretty terrible it is there are no good options in that scenario. You don't get raped every month as an aunt but then you have to do terrible things to other people to well. She had blanks in her gun but I get what you're saying yes. She didn't know that I know would you shoot on to know isn't it. I get it but then I'll be relieved have to know how yeah so lots of hopes and expectations for next time in our next hundred pages I can't wait to yeah can't wait to see you guys back here later. I.

"In the last the last time we talked it was just this person that came by the shop essentially really yeah and had dealings with her mom or she's hooked the. She took the donate a clothes. They weren't intending to site couldn't remember. I can't remember if daisy knew where they were going roughly or if she just thought like I mean it was clear that she's thought like violated doesn't look like she would be taken things charity but the she gave it any thought whatsoever and now it is a very important part of his life the rival yeah for the second time she's saving because we learn but later she was a part of the a part of that baby smuggling operation and when I took her through the woods of Vermont be smuggling operation in term terms right now baby step but now once again just taking her post explosion and then they they take her to a place. I don't know how to pronounce it. The Car Nora von Yeah that means Castle I found out oh Welsh for castle fun so this is revealed to her that Melania Neil or not her parents and she doesn't seem upset enough. I remember yeah she did see him in shock and upset but like I was like is that it felt really care about them at all. It's just felt like she she. She moved past it so quickly she was like. Oh Yeah. I'm super sad about that so anyway and I get that a lot is happening so she doesn't have a ton of time to dwell but at the same time don't you get get the sense that whenever she talks about her parents even before they had died like in the narrative here that she was like yeah they're fine yeah oh exist totally didn't and I'm noah any teenage girl who has a feeling about their parents as a teenage girl very strong in one direction in her. Nothing both pretty strong right. I was going to say one way. You need your own just like mine and then the other day you love them and they know everything and then the next day you hate ate them and they know nothing or even yes but it's rarely like are not as believable yeah but I also makes me wonder wonder about like parental wrench honest or or maybe Melania Neil treated her more like a project been like a child they deeply loved like maybe they were assigned signed to care for Nicole and and that would make sense and so they were basically just like we will keep you safe and alive and out of photographs and away from public events and so maybe they kind of treated her with like a courteous detachment as well but also makes me wonder how old she is when she's recording this testimony testimony because if she's freshly traumatized and maybe this is whatever happens happens but now this then she records it right after the fact like maybe maybe she's sort of still shell shocked and like looking back and just like well. They weren't really my parents and judging book yeah. I feel like she can't be recording it right right. After ray a lot more is going to happen a lot yeah but we don't know what that's when she could still be prize and and shock no matter how detached Stewart from your parents or no matter how I don't know no matter how whatever your upbringing was like a Chore Job to Melanie in Paul our meal. Don't you think just the massive people of any type of stability because if nothing our is higher reality is fake yeah well yeah if nothing else maybe there was it was a super loving between the three of them or anything like that but certainly it was stable and it was safe yeah. It does seem to me like she moved on to well. They never really talked about their past or anything with me either so he's that makes sense and I was like five minutes ago. Are you sure she downshifted pretty fast yeah. I don't think this character is not really developed as I wanted to be an and then and then on top of that she's also just shifts into daisy has to be the fun to go back to Gilead and save everything right and so then you're like what how did we turn around that far quickly rather Chelsea. That's from not trusting eight at all too trusting her a whole lot very quickly. That's a good point. I wonder about that too because she also realizes is is pretty quickly that she doesn't have anybody else like if she is this baby. Nicole and they've sort of taken care of her identity as far as making sure. The school doesn't follow her and the school understands. She doesn't really have a choice where she going to go. She wasn't allowed to have any passions like to go like she did some sports in high school. She had some friends cut off but she said she really didn't have really close friends either. She never attached so I don't know yeah I agree that her character and as we develop more it's not I just wonder if if thirteen out what is trying to say what else does she supposed to do much like lydia sort of had this no feeling of no choice they gave me the rope and what was I supposed to. Lydia wasn't a shell all of a person beginning. That's true that's giving on that journey yeah. She had to lake shed that former self yeah that's true a degree and then like even not per back into her history st figure out like okay. How do I deal with this. It's the same way I dealt with my oppressive family. yeah you know. I I feel like Liz. Journey has a lot to do with her past life yeah so then you're wondering like why wouldn't daisy reaction either i. I guess I'm trying to justify atwood because I like her but that's not rhyme so highly enjoying the book right yeah but this does like it. I feel like it. It just takes me out of the story a little bit sometimes where I'm just like. Oh yeah that's right. I don't actually know much about her feelings to. I know this felt very like young adult again. daisies character feels like oh you're destined to save the planet and you know you have a fight scene montage and you're off and you're like try to have this weird bouncing back and forth stay or is it yeah. There's one part where she's like. Oh well. I don't like that and then either Elijah or eight hours like socks. Anyway and you're like oh come on. I'm totally answer. Give a teenager. I play on the glove but yeah so I would say that. Although it's it's intriguing daisy is my least favorite care. Oh yes same and I definitely felt this way. Less talk to as well yeah. It was just the least interesting to me sure which definitely would not have guessed going into this book with these three individuals that the person that we know the least about historically would be the one that I found the least interesting yeah. You think there'd be more I I thought it would enjoy getting to know her a lot more than I actually am. I do think her her tattoos sounds terrible like the scarifying scarification guard vacation yeah arrays wondering how they're not raised forever. They're only raised forever permanently. If you take real good care of a tattoo but okay okay so how does that even work. It's just depends on how how it's done okay. There's lots of different ways that could turn out so have. We exhausted daisy already yeah. I don't know Kinda Daisy. Let's move on back. Wow that was super fast now. We don't after that I I don't think is the problem and just like happening to her. She's not yeah yeah. It does seem very not master of her destiny by any stretch of the imagination which is actually very believable mature interesting yeah but I'm just saying in the section of a fifteen year old. I think that's pretty true like things Kinda. What happened to to some of them. Instead of yeah unless you really truly exceptional maturity lake a really a really exceptionally gifted and motivated fifteen year old I had the world just happens to them for the most part which actually is a good transition to agnes because has here she is being dressed up for marriage and they're telling her stand up and as she really a woman and is that padding and and she's you know she's really is getting even commander. Highlands L. is like is she old enough like you. Finally I know you're worth a mention all the other times you may as well have not been there but but at this point you are worthy mentioned command Kyle. I did have one random note that I made very early. In what I I start hearing from Agnes again where in the first paragraph she says due to the twist my life took I was able to observe the marriage process from both sides of the bride being prepared and that of the ONS responsible for preparing to she become an aunt later wha- yeah that's where my mind immediately went yes she did ask the leader. How does one become an like not. It was just like yes. Theoretically yes theoretically yeah. I was like wait a minute backup today miss some cues here. is she going to be an aunt later an issue going to be like the one nice on it that way okay one more thing about daisy that I have to say and then we'll move part of sorry but but she has a crush on garth or whatever I'm like. Come on me it. Just it felt a little way. I'm sorry back good. I don't understand I'm hoping that our frustration with Z. Will Resolve itself yeah. It will be like Oh yeah. We're that some sort of growth. That will make it pay off. She needs to grow. She needs to change right now. She's really one dimensional so agnes. She's only thirteen yeah by the way imagining in my head that she was a little bit older than that fifteen or so yeah yeah and I just you know expected her to sound super young because it's Gilead in the don't educate girls really but yeah it was kind of just heartening to hear that she is thirteen and they're like well. You got your period. You're in in her dad. Coming defended her which was unexpected unexpected. Yeah it even says she had like ceased at that point to think of him and her father which isn't because they stole her but added go like a stranger in the house yeah. He's never really had any real meaningful interaction with her. It seems sure so anyway. I thought that was very interesting. That commander Mander Kyle did seem to show an iota of carrying for a moment anyway and also found it super fascinating that the aunt says don't worry. You're going to have a choice of three candidates. I was like really seems like a lot of power. Give the young girl in the a situation like our choice. Yeah no way well were entirely for only for like upper class. Commanders Children Children. You know not not for like every young girl being like it's Kinda like when your parents are like. Do you want to go on this thing that thing on this week really. They are picking one already but you would have some. We're going to go on go on a trip to are you so excited. You wouldn't do this in the car. Dr This in the car right and I think they're doing this availed and either way. You're getting in the car for the trip at that. I did enjoy the fact that she embroidered a small skull and to the where and was like ha ha. They're gonna I totally get away with this but actually it means that we're all GonNa die. Someday and I want you die. Hi Paula an interesting tie in to all of the schools. That daisy was wearing in her chosen hand off clothing. It was all about that. That's very nice. I saw that so I think we should address the part where Bekker's first of all freaking out understandably Ya. I felt like we already know that this yeah yeah like like we already know that her dad probably the dentist probably did some horrible things to her but she'll other girls yeah yeah but like she's freaking out here in this situation because like everything about men a man touching her or is disgusting her and she is forced to accept this proposal because it's the only one she's. GonNa get her the only again she'll disgrace him and then it says I remember how upset she'd been about the story of the concubine cut into twelve pieces but I didn't Wanna ask her. Girls' disgrace could rub off on you. If you got too close close to it which I thought was sort of. I don't know just an interesting thing to say. I think she's talked before about how the how her status goes up and down according to her family and I think in her thirteen year old mind that still something that's important even though she recognizes Nice's that it's not the only thing but you know in her on her hand handmade got pregnant like her status rose at school now and she knows completely out of control clearly affects her life right and she may just I think she says she has so many roles in her life because she's in Gilead and she's still still figuring figuring out which ones are worth breaking are going or you know yeah doing in.

"I like and Whitney's back. This is small group. It's intimate. It's going to be thoughtful. Fingers crossed also more beer cheese. goodness yeah backup wine nine in case. We are on the way like it yeah so so this week. We're going to jump into the same format as last week. we'll talk about characters throughout our reading today we read through chapter twelve so it was roughly another hundred pages with about two hundred left to go in the book doc so let's kick it off with 'cause she's the first one we hear from in stadium so this gives us a little bit more information about the turnover which I'm very excited about out. I was kind of eating up every word. Lydia was once again this week my favorite agree. I feel like she might be my favorite throughout the whole book. She's so interesting hanging. She has so much to say and right now. She's doling out so much information. I know I know and it's fast and there's still stuff hidden that we don't know and so you're like beginning all of this. Thank you still have so many questions. Yeah I feel like she's being coy about releasing her information to her. Maybe someday mystery reader which is interesting and exactly clearly something linear would do. Yes I agree. I was totally eating all of that intro into what happened after they got captured. What was it like at at the stadium. I was happy to see that like my assumption. That stadium would be like something lake. What we have experienced stadiums previously was kind of right on sure. Only it's during the part that we have so many questions about right and I I don't know a ton about the Holocaust but it reminded me a a little bit of like sort of the ghettos situation where it's like remove people from their home in their profession and their belongings and put them in this mall crowded group together incur incurred humanized then what we do with native Americans and I'm sure like in Menlo genocide is similar type of situations and then like reduce them to the animals like what she said where like they couldn't take care of any of their like hygenical. Let's be frank there were there was like a couple of very small shared bathrooms that were already pretty aggressive. Start on then. They didn't let anybody have any kind of menstrual fairness or would you know working sinks or toilet paper. I mean it was it's pretty awful yeah and so at one point she says just animals to kind of take away their dignity and all of that and and again it's kind of out of the genocide oppression handbook. I mean like not that you know what I mean though it seems to follow some patterns if you've looked into historical all of events of of groups of people being broken down into either killed or being oppressed or whatever Russillo really interesting to read about how Lia processed all of this because she seems very aware of it now so analytical granted. We're looking back on it too so that's different because when you're in in it you're just like feeling different things but she's looking back on it going. This is what I experienced and this is how horrible it was and she talks about the breakdown like her humanity. Go to some degree so it does seem like she at least remembers it fairly accurately. Sean even though you know with greater hindsight I was I was going to say that the fact that they they also heightened psychological torture by having the women come out and shooting them in front of the other women in that how Lydia responsive saying now why are they. Why are they doing that. IF THEY'RE GONNA kill US anyway. What's the big deal like she kind of? I think she's interest. She's interested in waiting to see how things shake out before she makes a plan or anything which is true to lady. Oh I like how that's laid out in the book and in the show that she she sits and waits and watches and says what can I how can I get out of this as much as possible diabolical and smart right I right yeah. I was really struck early. On in in the stadium chapter before we get further onto Lydia's more indepth description of the horrors that she and other other women were subjected to in the beginning during the stadium chapter. It sounded so orderly. which really sounds very different than the very brief introductions we had in the show you how you know younger fertile women were treated then like they were forcibly separated from their families. An existing children and Lydia definitely references like being herded like cattle. I don't get the impression that it was in such brutal manner are that it was more of a slow psychological breakdown for these women palm who were highly educated professional class. I'm and largely beyond childbearing age this seemed much more orderly and planned psychological whereas what was happening to a younger child bearing women in the show at least not in the book because we learn so much less than the book felt much more trying to prevent action like trying to prevent them from escaping lake. It was more physically harsh stuff like that. I don't know did that track. Am I the only one thing I do think. It seem more like you were. They were not hurting cattle but like you like this is a commodity that they want to or like herding cattle but but when you want to tame a horse or something you're kind of like we know that this animal is wild and could be potentially dangerous because they've had so much power as a judge on. Dr Are very very smart and I think they recognize that and that's why they're pulling these women out. As why else would they pull them by their categories so there has to be that breakdown whereas their mindset mindset. Gilead for women of childbearing age is oh. They're just women and like all they're good for is make Abbas so they see maybe a difference of like this is like us versus versus the you know something to really break them down a mayor or one of yeah interesting. That's kind of what I thought so I think so earlier on in the Stadium Stadium Chapter comes still there. It says there's been a coup on page one sixteen. There's been a coup here in the United States just isn't times past and so many other countries and that line line is really really because I think sometimes we like to think of the US as impregnable yes yeah. I was thinking similar things and so when that when I read that line I thought Margaret Atwood put that line in there on purpose yes Americans are like no we've always been America and this is how we are but really America's not not that old molly. I was thinking a lot during this these these passes here at the stadium about what it felt felt like directly after nine eleven how it was so shocking and it just took the whole country a bit to get over the fact that this happened here right honor ourselves and it's not it's not it's no longer thing that is only imaginable far away we had had terrorism in the United States before but it was all L. Homegrown and didn't seem so well organized and massive it also of course didn't have the death will then nine eleven date and this felt really really similar in the lake shock and awe and then trying to assess lake. How do we go forward now and this new reality was it's really weird to relive while reading a book of Fiction Yeah Yeah it just yeah. It felt very purposeful. I mean it made me remember I'm going to butcher the historical information about the genocide in Cambodia and how they also took the old elderly people and the well educated because they wanted to go back to you this agricultural based society and they didn't want Western influences and it reminded me of that because they are taking away these higher thinking thinking people and then saying we need educated. The of the United States are in the world. This is like the biblical way you know they're. They're referencing this older time but the same thing in in Cambodia they were like well. We don't want the Western influence. Let's go back hundreds of years ray and get rid of all of that and I was like that's frightening to think about because you think inc as an American that happens in other countries out here right now and you you get used to that and for her to say you pride yourself on being released so face the facts you know I think it's a wake up call offer some people who might have questions about what's going on in the United States and feeling like no that wouldn't happen here. It's like yeah you might need to consider that as a possibility yeah yeah much more so than in the original handmaid's tale. This seems to point directly at don't be complacent right. These things can happen here anywhere. At civilized have fallen yes and the handmaid's hell was that but it was a time when even fewer people or shaking yeah right so yeah. I've find that really interesting and also you just can't like remove Margaret Atwood and her personality way of thinking from from this book sure this is not a book that you can read and not get a sense of her like what is really directly in her mind so this is great always fun on for me since I really like her yeah however if you don't actually agree at all with agree a lot with Margaret Atwood this would be a real tough read for you I think yeah. I don't know that those people are reading this. They are not I mean I feel like I definitely have heard from a fair number of people who read the original book and still feel like I could never have any apps over like. I don't know why you're twisting it this way. This is not about current events level and I'm like I see how the lead up is relatively and you know different perspectives but they feel like this one is much more interface about being clear like this could happen here. This is is how it starts. It's little things right. It's you know a tackling connect the dots with from the like in hindsight but at the same time we can start noticing. Yes Red Red flags and kind of going dot com dot eventually. It's red smudge. It's going to be a line there. yeah definitely and I think a lot of the referencing again back to you the thing that we learned early on that it was posed as a terror attack. Oh yeah they gained control jer. I think is very pertinent because that is absolutely something that almost almost happened here could definitely happen again even in today's climate with some people being much more aware and alert win. You Know Oh non domestic terrorism happens in the United States..
