Is Tom Brady now the greatest team sport athlete ever?

"Who is the greatest athlete of all time to debate. That i saw again and again on social media today after tom brady won another super bowl. Mvp super bowl ring. He does again at the age of forty three and this might be as most impressive super bowl victory yet. And i don't even know how you have. That discussion in the big picture to be honest is like where. What are you basing it on is the number of championships is it. The number of mvp's is it. How levick you are It could be you know you can dismiss some guys because they're part of a team sport versus individual where it's one hundred percent of that person that drives a success like that's probably a i mean. It's an apples and oranges thing as well different sports. I don't even know how ya how you could ever come up with that. certainly james. Tom brady is very much in that discussion. Now here's the. Here's the issue. Stevie with tom brady being you know the certainly certainly the greatest quarterback of all time okay. Let's go with that all right. Let's go hands down greatest guy to play that position seven championships multiple. Mvp's multiple wins games. All that stuff. So i think he's the greatest quarterback but but if you if you were on that same team with tom say prior to the tampa and you're on the six superbowls and you know another player on that team another quarterback of course but so so. Where does that leave you. You know if you're if you're a middle linebacker going or gronkowski on. Hey i want six. There is that what is that. What the qualifiers. To be the greatest of all times. I was there. I wouldn't six so the the football kind of funny for me to pick to pick a player that has a completely different position in hockey. For example everyone you know you got a bunch of forwards bunch of skaters know and they award them bill norris trophy for defense and all that stuff and so hockey. I think you can figure out who. Who's greatest of all time because you're comparing apples to apples there. So that that's a bit of an issue for me to single dot saying you're the greatest of all time again again because there'd be other guys who played on that team who won super bowl championships you know it's just an interesting position to because everything goes to the quarterback it's such a unique position your guiding the ship. You're the leader of the team on and off the field. It's such a unique position that in team sports is not really another comparison in my opinion the other sport that i could compare that to where where i think. You're singling out a position player. So i don't think you can call them the greatest football player of all time. It's quarterback baseball right. You can get an you. Get an ace pitcher. Okay on a on team of course and if you said okay well he's he's the greatest baseball player of all time. And you're going to wait. Wait a minute wait a minute. I'm i'm sammy sosa over here. Okay right what do you mean. I'm where i'm pete rose there. I'm i guess pizza name wouldn't be in there anymore. You know what i mean. So bad is gonna wait. Wait a minute here. Learning How to Lead with Ryan Hawk

"Ryan hawk on dose of leadership man. I'm excited that you're here. Welcome the show my friend. I appreciate it. Thanks for having me rich You know we've been connected the lincoln and obviously had known about your show for a long time so similar past but always wanted to have you on this show talked. Nfl leadership junkie so man. I'm glad you're here. Like i said thanks for having me it I was read about. Your story is pretty wild especially with everything. Going on as a pilot and september eleventh man. I was I was like wow. This is going to be interesting. Yeah no it's it's it's been a journey but it so i'm curious i i would bet that are past. They're similar in the sense. That if i understand correctly football was kind your dream as you were growing up and then going through college and then you played somewhat professionally as well right and then. How did that in. I don't quite know the story how that ended. Why did the football come to an end. Eventually they tell you you're not gonna Like most guys they re. The sport retires you tire from. And so i played after college. I played for a few years in the arena. Football league briefly went up to canada. And cfl you know handful of workouts in the nfl and then they they say Yeah you're you're you're okay. But not good enough to To make it to the upper echelon of the sport and the nfl where you can actually earn a living and the really gripe played. It's essentially like playing minor league baseball right. You do you do it for the opportunity to keep playing into potentially catch. Someone's eye so that you could maybe have the story like kurt warner right. Kerr played in the arena. League gets gets a workout. He impresses he gets a job. The starter gets hurt and all the rest is history is now in the hall of fame. So i think that's why you do it you you and that's why i did it for a few years and I love those great experience. I mean you. Don't you can only do that when you're still in the prime of your athletic life and and so i'm glad i did it even though it delayed a little bit of my professional career but I i definitely don't regret. Yeah with so when you found it came to an end was it. Was it something you kind of always knew is going to happen you prepared for you said you know what i'm going to play ride this out as long as i can and then i'm going to start some sort of professional career and business or something that always in the back of your mind or was it like with me. I always thought. I was going to be a pilot and west when nine eleven happened and i got thrust in the corporate arena was a little bit of panic. Initially but How was it for you. Well i you know. I think kids. Are i talk with high school and college kids now. They're just so much smarter and better intentions than i did. When i was in college I didn't even really think about not playing football right And and so That could you know. I had friends who were really good about Building relationships creating connections setting themselves up for for life after college. I just wasn't one of those people. I i was immature like a lot of twenty two year olds and so i didn't have any thought of not playing I just happened to get really lucky. I am a family friend. Decided to take a chance on me and hire me into a sales job and And then just said hey just kind of use the same type of work ethic you learn as a player but now do this year for this job and if you do I have a hunch that things will go well. his name's rex. Goswell still a great friend to this day and just i'm just lucky. I had a person who is willing to take a shot. And then i as i try to do. I like to prove people right When they believe in fortunately it kind of my career went from there man. What a blessing to have that person kind of in your corner to kind of steer you. They saw something in you right. Which i think is an obligation of all this leaders right. Great leaders kinda see something that we don't even seen ourselves ripe and they help extract that out of you. That's great and then as i suppose you started working and that's when it was a lexus nexus nexus right and so you're in this sales position in this professional role like with me that's when it became. I started getting these moments of clarity of like. Oh where i came from. In my case it was the marine corps and flying planes in my mindset was limited. When i first started in thinking all i know how to do sleigh airplanes and but then as i got into the corporate arena i started saying oh i did learn a lot more than just flying airplanes. I'm assuming the probably same happen you with your football experience in in the great coaches and mentors you surrounded yourself around most of your life. I learned i learned how to develop a work ethic. I learned resilience. I learned preparation. I learned being coach -able. I learned how to collaborate with others. i got to college. I was on a much more diverse team people from wide variety of backgrounds. And i played a in the arena league down in birmingham so completely different from where. I'm from here in ohio and so i would say i think i learned about people. I learned a lot about myself. Learn about how to work. I learned how to do extra. I learned all that from my coaches from playing sports. And so i. I just tried to take that into the professional world and i liked the profession of selling because the people who were landing at the top of the stack rankings. The people who were making the most money the people who are getting promoted. They were the ones who were working the hardest. I don't have any experience. But i do think i could work And so i i. I was willing and still. I'm willing to to to work really hard at it. And then Eventually led to me. You know having some success in doing well exceeding the goals accompany set for me and then that led to promotions and more opportunities. And so i think that's that i direct all of that back to a combination of two things. One my family. My parents my brothers as well as My coaches who really taught me how to out of work once. I want for my eighth grade to ninth grade year.

Spring League football tourney to play in bubble

"That. I was reading an interesting story. This just hit There's gonna be a Spring league in football. A 16 football tournament in Las Vegas. They will start in October. And they'll use a bubble concept very similar to what we're witnessing now in the NHL and N BA, the teams will be stocked mostly with players that have been released by NFL teams. And also 20 to 30 college players from FBS power five schools that either decided to opt out in 2020 or had their season's cancelled. Interesting. They'll be 228 players 38 players per team. The law be housed in the same hotel will practice and play at the same facility. And they'll be quarantined within the air quote bubble. Would the woods? That would be Brian Woods? Who is the Spring League? That's what they're calling it. The Spring League CEO. Said that Events will be funded internally. With the possibility of recouping some money from a broadcast agreement at a later date. Interesting boy. Somebody very opportunistic and I don't know. You put something together that big that quick on how they're going to play in October. But how could college players being the bubble? When are they going to school dropped out guys that would be done their job. They're not going to play it all right if college football's going to cancel the season So they're not going to go back. There's going to be some players ago. Okay? I guess I'm done done going back this spring League. That's what it's called Conduction annual monthlong Siri's of practices and games. A showcase talent to the NFL and CFL scouts. It also hosts several other smaller and more frequent player showcases, most recently, a four day event in Denver last month. I didn't even know about this. The spring leagues bubble schedule this fall calls for 10 days of practice starting October 7th. Followed by nine games between October 17th of October 28th. During games the league will ban huddles. And limit each team to 19 players, three coaches and three medical staffers on the field or on the sideline. The remaining 19 players and all their staffers will be stationed either in the end zone tunnel. Or off the field entirely, and will be called when needed. Disinfect intense we placed on both sidelines. Three game officials will be assigned to clean the game ball. Some player equipment after every single play, and all protocols will be overseen by Dr Paul Auerbach. A professor at the Stanford

"Rhenium Brozi is the fourteenth and current commissioner of the Canadian Football League during the off season you may have interacted with him on his Randy's road trip tour of the country. Well this off season has been different and the road trips in the future might be different. He's not at training camps right now. Interacting with fans, he is hoping to make sure that the league can come back for the fans experience as A. A player and as an administrator, and as part of the PA, and now as part of the League office has not really helped him. Get ready for this challenge, nor I assume has is education from the University of Manitoba. Randy this has been an education for all of us. What have you learned through this period as you're trying to usher the league into a spot where it can survive in maybe potentially thrive. Oh my gosh, the. I think there's a long list of things that We're all learning. You know I think one of the things that strikes me ever day is that you have to learn to separate speculation from fact, because obviously we have a lot of unanswered questions, and and the instinct is to glue together two or three ideas and treat them as though that is fact than evidence to support an argument. And some part of the exercise again, maybe a second lesson learned. is to really step back from it all and ask the question of whether or not that is, in fact a fact or just what we're speculating, so you know there I think there are good lessons to be learned from this where all feeling a little disempowered compared to a normal operating environment, but there probably will be some good that comes from the amongst all of the suffering and tragedy. There will be some good that comes from it. Maybe we'll become better at what we do. Randy as we talk to you today. Where is the CFL's viability regarding playing in twenty, twenty or playing in early twenty twenty one? Well, it's a great question. And I think over the last couple of weeks in particular. Have really been focusing, not just on. You know what it would take to get us to play in twenty, but really a chance to really reframe. The way, we think about the League and looking at twenty one and beyond. I saw yesterday report that suggests that there could be upwards of three hundred million jobs displaced as a result worldwide as a result of the virus, and obviously there is going to be some economic. Follow till we won't see an economic recovery, an immediate economic recovery when the virus crisis passes, so we're GonNa have to think about the business environment in the economic environment that will be operating again when this is done. And again lesson learned than this. Is that a crisis doesn't eliminate your problems that actually just amplifies them, and so the idea is as we look at all of the options to play in twenty twenty. We have to be mindful about twenty one and beyond and I think it's a chance to reset. It's to look at our operating model. Look at our cost structures. Look at how we organize ourselves opportunities to share resources, so you know before we ask our teams to swallow a bitter pill and spend money and lose money much more than they would lose an normal season I want to be able to show them something on the other side. I WANNA. WanNa be able to say that. If in fact, we go ahead and do anything in twenty, it has to be leading us to a better place into the future, and you know frankly. I'm optimistic that we can do that. I think we've got a great stakeholders I. Think everyone in and around our game loves the CFL love what it stands for like we still got a lot of momentum on our two point Oh strategy, but personally I think it's time for CFL. Three point zero, which will be just a better version of ourselves in in a better operating model at through that, Lens. I think we can survive the crisis and and look forward to a great future. So the most recent decisions in the news around the league were one to move the Grey Cup in terms of awarding Saskatchewan Twenty twenty, two, keeping Hamilton as the host for twenty twenty one and going to a model of a win it. Then you hosted model. The game is played in in twenty twenty end to to allow players back into facilities if their jurisdictions locally. Say That's okay. Can you walk us through the mindset and the decision making in terms of how you came to both of those decisions, so the Twenty Twenty Grey Cup obviously was planned for. Scotch, when and it's very clear now that under no circumstances. Will we hand up having what we call a normal grey cup experience of bringing large numbers of our fans, and and you know what it's like grey. Cup is an amazing event in part, because it's so fantastically social the festival as big part of Grey Cup as the game itself is, and so the decision not to go with a normal grey cup was an easy one to make, because even the most optimistic amongst us had to acknowledge that Grey Cup would be very challenged through that lens of what we would describe as a traditional Greek experience, so that part was easy. Be The winning host I. Think which just a really good interesting innovation, actually taking a page out of the. If you look at MLS for an example and obviously hockey You know well documented you know. As the as teams continued to play through the playoffs. They you know they get the play their games at home. And ultimately we just felt that for what is clearly going to be a nearly bizarre year that all of us will remember for the rest of our lives. This was the one time to look at Great Cup differently, and we made the decision that the win and host would be the best way to operate in these unique circumstances. As it relates to reopening facilities again just simply taking guidance from healthcare authorities and officials as they roll out there phased in. Restart. It's a nice thing to think about. Being able to welcome the players who are in the local community back to the facilities, obviously in order to do that. We need to do it safely, but it's a step towards feeling. We're closer to a more normal environment. And the message from the Office of the teams as provided they can. Operate their facilities in mind with public health requirements. As long as we do everything, we can to follow the rules and make sure that our players and staff remain healthy than it's good, healthy and a positive step towards getting us closer to where we all WanNa be in that is playing football at some point down the road or any. Could you characterize where things stand now regarding discussions between the CFL and the Canadian government. Those conversations are ongoing. They have asked us to look at existing programs..

"This was supposed to be week one in the NFL. The Edmonton Eskimos were supposed to be hosting the BC lions to kick off the twenty twenty season. But. covid nineteen pandemic has four CFL to have a delay of game. The CFL asks the Federal Government for one hundred fifty million dollars to help whether the Tobin one thousand nine hundred break now there are more question surrounding the league. At this very moment, CFL has very little momentum when it comes to return to play scenario, but they're optimistic. Nate Bihar is a wide receiver for the Ottawa read blacks and Randy Ambrosi is the commissioner of the NFL. They join us on this edition of the sports on Pause podcast. Richardo educate you a little bit as the American in Canada, but what the NFL means to many Canadians. It's literally the fabric of many communities outside of the city that we live in Toronto. It is their team. In that's why Ambrosius such a hit we'll see fell fans. Because when he came on board, a former player former leader of the PA, he dreamt big. He thought that the Great Cup could be an institution where Canadians celebrated like candidate over again, but dreaming big and having a strategy to go. Even international doesn't really happen in a global pandemic, some really interested to see how he's going. Curtail some of those big visions to make sure they're profitable in the long term. Those answers and more. Why don't we talk to the commission itself Random Rosen?.

Race for No. 1 pick in 2020 NFL Draft: Joe Burrow to the Bengals becomes the trendy pick

"I just don't think that Joe burrow necessarily says the things that he said being a little wishy washy about committed the bangles before this and that all goes away because of the scouting combine his want to throw gasoline on the fire eight maybe he again maybe he wants to challenge we had Carson Palmer on the show radio row Superbowl week he said I was gonna get drafted number one overall people told me don't go to the bangles there losing organization I said I've got I'm good enough to change it there he said look looking back there was a youthful arrogance about me I thought I could change it I realized I learned I could not so perhaps Joe burrows in the same boat but perhaps Schober also is getting other information or other direction from his father his dad played professional football his dad played football in the CFL his dad has been a football dad it's distinctly possible is dad knowing the ins and out of an NFL career or a pro football career says you know what you don't want to go to the bangles and let's get you somewhere else which is exactly what Archie manning did so this is no slam against Bengals fans of this city of Cincinnati you know they're no worse or better this is no worse or better than many other cities in the NFL this is simply about can you trust the ownership namely Mike brown to support you to build a winner Joe burrow is the best quarterback in this draft by a long shot he's the best player because the numbers he put up last year he's also the best back because of two ways injury Joe burrow in a quarterback league is the best quarterback in this year's draft so you know he's got some leverage there and does he have faith that Mike brown who is renowned in the NFL as a cheapskate does he have the faith that Michael brown will do enough that we had to go on the show late last week and he absolutely was adamant that the idea the narrative that the Bengals don't wanna win is silly just look at the playoff berths that they made the playoffs seven times under Marvin Lewis and that if you make the playoffs that many times and you draft as well as they do which they do draft very well then you shouldn't be criticized for not trying to

The State of 'The Black Quarterback': A Conversation with Donovan McNabb

"Over a decade ago my Business Partner Hall of Fame Quarterback Warren Moon. I sat down to discuss. How can we stop? The labeling of black quarterbacks are dream was for some day they're not to be that description at all. I was blessed to sit down with Donovan. Mcnabb one of his men teas and proteges to discuss the status and progression of black quarterbacks in the NFL. This is entrepreneurs. The playbook hey I wanted to have a conversation about black quarterbacks and as you know it's been a big part of my career has warned being a client and then a partner of mine are dream. Ten years ago was that nobody would ever say black quarterback right but I think you know to this day that they don't use it as much but I see a hangover when I look at you not be in the hall of fame or the way that Warren's marketed because they don't want that story told about six years in Canada right right and then there's just an under Tony it's unintentional. It's like even with the metoo movement. Things go on aren't intentional. It's social development social. How can we help? Expediter accelerate people understanding the equality. That exists I you have to appreciate I don't think we're at a point where we appreciate the level of evolution. That's going on and I say that because he wanted to mention. Hey you know you were kind of guy that passed the torch in them like no. The torch was already late for Marlin Bristow Gilliam and dumb and James James Harris and those particular guys. It was then but it wasn't one that was accepted and then. I think when you mentioned the warnings and the Randall Donovan. Before I thought it was a warm place you played when you played but it was. It was kind of a it. Wasn't it wasn't appreciate and when? I say that you know it was the yard that Warren Password worn was Dan Marino. We'll be talking about how radio because his numbers are comparable today without the six years in candidate. But I I think what we're seeing now is. We're seeing people start to understand the level of talent ability. How cerebral these kids are. They can play from the pocket and their leaves. These are all things that when they mentioned about. You'll see that in in the list now and says it has it's literally presidential but but the thing is you have to be able to take a step back and say you know what these kids can play the quarterback position. And when you look at the collegiate ranks then more black quarterbacks in the collegiate good ones so again it goes back to happen understand. What the level we go through and give it to appreciate what we're seeing you know. I do allow entrepreneurs and I talked about patients who and the need to be offended or or resentful. And it's so interesting with all those guys that you talk to your mom. Briscoe someone that in California. We do a ton of work with for years trying to get that movie made by the way you know. It's a really good movie and a really good story but nobody's really resentful and angry or offended. How do you have the patience to wait for the reality to come about that? All the top quarterbacks are going to be evaluated by their talent. Well here we have old. School mentality shouts and tell you them telling evaluators who still have that. Well he's black quarterback what are we just evaluated his ability. How intelligent he is. The family background would become as he comes out. It's nothing else that you need to focus on focus on his color. You only public hair. You have to focus on how he wants. You know the the focus needs to be more of the position and that's what we're seeing we have. We have been after the American insult that people are afraid to talk about now. He will say well. We don't need talking about though. He's the third every America's worries. They play of great ones. The greatest african-american quarterback did win. The might. I've worked with before because the caregiver Steve but this could be an opportunity for a guy who people love is ability. Yeah and then. They want to question the thing about his character. What are you looking at? Are you looking more deep into trying to fight the negative or how good this really with? Doug flutie yeah who has a lot of similarities to a lot of running quarterback and I said if you were an African American would have been your chances even to play in the CFL for how old he is. He said there won't be a chance ever but stories like that people boss. Yeah well that's what I wanted in talking to people over and and it's important for us to focus on that because it's not gonNA stop. I mean we're looking at. We've looked at five afterward quarterback just in the playoffs alone. Yeah headed had a chance to have to play it in title game and then it's GonNa continue to grow where mean who's to say feels doesn't get drafted in the next year or two from Ohio state. Then I was talking about him. It's exciting right now. You've been one of those guys. They continue to grind the path. I'm on your team. As far as I'm Jay Hall of Famer right here. More people need to be aware of the issues that we're facing and this guy needs to be in the hall of fame and many others because we're building a pipeline hall of famers. It's a shame that Warren Moon American and I appreciate the respect. I love warranty. That's right I n there. I appreciate your insight and honesty thanksgiving.

How does hockey reckon with an abusive power structure?

"By the time you finish listening to this podcast. It's likely there will be more stories out there about abusive hockey coaches right now as we are recording this and as you're listening to it. The sport is facing a reckoning. It began with the toppling of one of the biggest domino's in the game. Mike Babcock out as coach of the Toronto Maple leafs tonight. Every mounting losses position became more and more tenuous and tonight his reign lean over. leafs nation is over. Mike Babcock was fired by the Toronto. Maple leafs for the same reason. Tons of hockey coaches have been fired before him. His team was underachieving. He might have been a bigger name than those other coaches but still not unusual then. The story started during the two thousand sixteen seventeen season. Mitch Moore had a private meeting with Mike Babcock and the coach asked then rookie to list the players on the team from Best Work Catholic to worst martyr complied not realizing that that talk within show his list to some of the players ranked the lowest and not long after that it became clear. The stories weren't just about Mike Babcock. Major allegations made against Calgary flames head coach. Bill Peters a former. NHL Her Chemo Lou. who spend spend some time with the flames in the early part of this decade calling for his alleged use of racial slurs while they were both part of the Chicago Blackhawks Organization now players ears are saying publicly things that used to be kept behind closed doors at all cost and the NHL in almost every league below it is realizing that it has a problem problem or more accurately that it has had a problem for quite some time? Now the question is what happens next. What did they do about it? What changes changes in the leafs? They've been playing a lot better since they fired the guy who humiliated one of their best players who thought I'm Jordan Heath Rawlings. This is the big story. Jeff Blair is a senior writer at sports net dot CA. He is the CO host of writer's block on Sports Net. Five ninety fan every day. He has covered a lot of dressing rooms ends and locker rooms throughout his career. Hey Jeff how you doing short. I'm doing well you've You've covered a lot of dressing rooms and locker rooms over the years I was. I was thinking about this the other day when the stuff happened with the Chemo. Lou and Bill Peters out of thinking to myself. I ever seen a locker room. I thought something nothing really poisonous and happen. And I think because unbalanced I spent more time around baseball clubhouses than anything else and initially when I started reporting Winnipeg CFL locker rooms is kind of a little different than hockey. I mean baseball. There have been African American players. There've there've been Latino players in baseball has its issues but it's nothing to go on a clubhouse now and see that the white players are in the minority I mean that's just the way it is and the NFL. When I covered it's the same thing and I don't remember any relationship with a manager or coach or a team I thought was particularly toxic? I mean they're examples of tone deafness. But what I think happens more often than not in a lot of these situations is just the manager coach. Whatever you WANNA call it becomes tone-deaf two things? Well why don't you start then by explaining how we got here where it started with Mike. Babcock in the leafs. Yeah there's a couple of things first of all. I'm a little concerned that people are sort word of mixing. Mike Babcock not you but people in general people were kind of going all Mike Babcock and then Bill Peters. Because here's the thing Mike Babcock seems to have tried cried some Caveman Sports Psychology on Mitch. Martyr So tell us about that. Mitch Monitor the first year. The story is now now that everybody's confirmed Mike. Babcock wanted him to work harder. So Mike Babcock called them into his office and said list your teammates in terms of hardest working to least hardworking. And tell me where you'd put Yourself Yourself Mitch. Marna with coach wants to do this so he goes ahead and does that and Somehow and I I don't know when it came out but somehow Mike Babcock doc essentially went to some of the guys that were below martyring. Say Mitch thanks. She works harder than you. You know this guy's dog in it right now and he thinks that works harder than you and the best line out of the Whole Story and God love Mitch. Martin but the best line of the whole story's Mitch Marnie just kind of shrugging and going nobody took it seriously right. You know it's like that's just that's just babs so I mean their stories. You know you can go. God stories about would coaches used to do for motivating players or trying to catch players airs. I Never Scotty Bowman Scotty. Bowman got tired of his team's missing curfew. So Scotty Bowman would go down. And I can't remember which city this went down to the front desk of the hotel and I think curfew was midnight. Went Down to the front desk of the Hotel at eleven thirty gave a stick to the dorm and said do me a favor when the guys come in get them to sign the stick and we'll we're going to auction off to charity so the next day Scott he goes into the locker eight. These are all the guys that showed up after midnight. Their names are on the stick so I mean stuff like that is you know. That's all part of an old school. Coaching you mentality. Whatever you think of it? Yeah it's and I mean at the heart of the the coach player relationship and this and this is why we'll talk specifically about. Bill Peterson Chemo. Lucas IT'S A. It's a point I think people are missing. I mean at the heart of a coach player relationship. It's a power relationship. I'm the coach. I control the most important part of your career. I control your time I control. How many starts you're gonNA make I control? Will how many at bats you're going to get I control if you're going to be coming in the ninth inning. I control if you're going to start back to back games like Then I control. You're earning power. This is sort of at the route. That's the traditional relations traditional relationship. Is that changing it is in the NHL. I find this fascinating because the four major sports in North America all right now if you look at sort of the players relationship to to power in the game the NBA players leak. It just is players are getting lots of money They make a a lot of money from shoe deals so they're comfortable financially outside of what they're earning contract like Shaquille O'Neal didn't spend any money he made playing basketball. He invested all all he lived off. His shoe deals coaches have no power over anybody in the NBA the NFL's you know you're disposable piece of meat. There's no such thing as guaranteed contract. Baseball's always had a very very strong players association. It's Kinda splintered now and I think we're kind of in an every man for himself air but what's happened in hockey is there has been an an influx of really talented really young players and because of the way the NHL 's collective bargaining agreement is setup. You Essentially Ashley. Now have a bunch of guys who were twenty two twenty three or twenty four making eight million dollars a year under contract for five six or seven years and that's the biggest difference to me. Is that players always used to make more than the coach and this is specifically the NHL players always used to make more than the coach. But they've got more term So if you're Mike Babcock and you've got three years left on your contract you've got Mitch Monitor. He's got six years left. He's making ten and a half million dollars a year. How do you? How do you motivate that? How do you manage them? It would take us. Ice Type. Doesn't matter to him take two minutes ice time away from me. I'm getting ten million dollars a year and by the way I got a job here for years down the road and you say that so hockey ocoee more than any other sport I think is is going through. This and hockey is going to half the data and and and the coaches are going to have to. The players aren't going to have to adapt. The coaches are going to have to debt. And this this gets the Bill Peter Situation and and why I think this is particularly vile you know first of all. I mean there's no statute of limitations and racism so I've heard people will make the case. Well he said this ten years ago three organizations ago he wasn't even with the flames. You have somebody claiming that he. He used the N.. Word that he used a racial epithet. You have that player's teammates backing you up. You have subsequent you have players coming out. Who played for Bill? Peterson Peterson Carolina. Saying hey he physically abused me. You have players coming out and saying yeah not only did he. Physically abused Rod brindamour. Not only did he did. He physically abused guys. But you've got player saying oh by the way we spoke. The Ron Francis who was general manager the team at the time and he didn't do anything wrong. There was something but the Akeem loose. The situation is really. I find it really bothersome. Because what was he supposed to do. You know these guys are playing in the American Hockey League They're not making a lot of money. Bill Peters when he was coaching that team the Rockford ice hawks. He held the future in his hands. so if you're a guy like a chemo Lou and you're trying to establish yourself or you're trying to get your career going going to your general manager and writing out your head. Coaches racist is probably not not a good career. Move and I think more than anything else. What this says is that at that time? Ten years ago that organization Chicago Blackhawks. There wasn't a structure in place. I mean I'm not gonNA say that guys don't yell things at each other in the locker room or on the ice and we we know they do. We know that racial epithets unfortunately are still a part of the sort of the on Ice Onfield Dialogue and sports. I don't think this happens now though like if we were rewinding this Chemo Lou had been Ah. I don't think that happens. 'cause he reports to somebody or he goes on social media then and it's taken care of but it bothers me that people are saying that some people are saying well you know ten years ago and nobody else stood up. It's people have to understand Dan that again. This gets to that that power relationship between the player and the coach. There's no way the player could you know what are you GonNa do. You're going to sacrifice your long term financial future because of this. I mean I'm not. I'm not saying that means. Bill Peters is right but hockey I think more than any other more than any other sport just by the the nature of how players are developed. Kids leave home. Kids go to town cities. They're billeted with people dependent on the structure. They are dependent on on the power structure there absolutely dependent on the power structure. And I think maybe that's what has created this culture around hockey the the NHL is really really trying. I think to find a way and I mean the NHL in general teams coaches are trying to find a way to deal with this the new age the players the the ultimate lesson the lesson from hopefully for this whole thing with Bill Peters is that there has to be every organization has to look at itself often say do we have the structures in

"I mean, TJ I know it's too, but the main thing he has to do is don't listen to outside world and pay attention to his coaching staff call, pick up the phone call, Matt liner. And you mean you got you know cars poem, or you got us over so many guys, you know, then you can call and get vice from and just don't worry about the social media in all those focus on what you need to do is binding and winning your teammates, pushing your teammates to play the best they can be, you know, that's what he has to do right now. Don't worry about what everybody else talking about. Just lean on the mental and the people you have went through that university and is used that and you should coaching staff, and I really feel like you'll be okay. I know it's tough. I know it's tough, but at the same time you got people around, you can help you get through that situation. Last time we saw you play vents, you're in. CFL plan for the rough riders, have you given up on playing professional football. Definitely shot out to the schedule. Appreciate. Appreciate. There's a rat right now. Here's a wrap. So I'm enjoying being a flag football coach for my son, and then also just helping out being on campus at UT sitting in a meeting room or doing private workouts for a lot of young quarterbacks that's going to be coming up and Jalen hurts down in Alabama, man, proud of you, man keep fighting through the. What do you think of Johnny Manziel going to the CFL? Do you think that's the right path for him to get back into the NFL? Yeah. I mean, I, I'm proud of Johnny minis going through a light went to a lot man, and he really loves the game as you can tell as you can see. So I'm glad he played in spring lead and I'm glad he's trying to further his career. I mean, a lot of things happen, you know, a lot of mature things happen in his life, so I'm just happy that he's growing and continuing to fight and not listen to everybody telling you just give up on what you love doing every day. So I'm proud of you. Never let nobody tell you what to do. Man, just keep working and keep fighting if no happen release you tried. So I'm happy trying at least. Yeah, Vince you're a great player. For this question. We saw Lamar Jackson, go out there and week one NFL. Used in multiple positions. You know that position, you know how you can affect the game various ways. You think that they're utilizing him affectively and will it work. Yeah. I mean, the game is changing. Man. The game is changing and you know, I hate to say this. The defense is getting good and they fast they moving around. So you know, the biggest thing is I want Lamar to do is what I told him and get which deficient coordinator man and ask them questions, what would you do to me if you was playing me, you know, take the time I was sick, which defends online course in Witcher linebackers coach of sit which DB coach, you know, do these things behind the scene when you have time. 'cause one is getting when they give you the keys. So that starting position job, you have to be ready. But I do like what they're doing with them. They prepared to play. They using the talented he has and everything else is gonna fall in to play of, you know, making those right reason NFL because it's not easy when you get that priests read that bogging your hand, they might show you one thing and there's a whole total different thing. So it's a fast game, but I really feel like the hard work that he's putting in. He's going to catch onto it and more reps at practice in game situation. He gonna continue to get better and better..

"We talked about that in this podcast, we had clipped Kingsbury talking about, you know, rolling with the different punches they had to even at AM. So this is that next step and today is wild for him. Obviously traveling having to move press conferences, whatever. But when we talked to him later this week, you expect him to really be as excited to play for Montreal and and Mike Sherman as he was when he signed with Hamilton and CFL in the first place. Right. Oh, no. And we, we talked about it yesterday. I know you spoke with, well, he's fired up and you know he's ready to go now. Now at the same time. Right. I, I don't wanna temporary expectations, but I'm the one that's going well. We'll like, okay, great. We're excited about the. I think it was a win win because obviously, you know, they gave up so much for the Johnny could be the starting quarterback and that necessarily wasn't the case Hamilton who did not give anything up to get into. They owned his negotiation and they had their starting quarterback. So you know. So for me, it's about book pumps eventful bit, like getting here and be patient and really just learn so that you can be the best you can be win that time terms that you will help the hit the field. So that's something I'd be. We're all gonna have to work together in Montreal because look Janis competitor. He's gonna wanna play tomorrow. That's just who he is. But at the same time we gotta do what's right for the team. I, you know, and make sure you have some time to actually learn and get some timing with these guys. I mean, I think they play in like four or five days and you know, that would just be ridiculous. And then I think they play Amilton the week after that only a few days later. So I just wanna make sure you know he. You need some time to play quarterback in there and actually know what you're doing. It's not fair to anybody to go into a game and say, okay, we're gonna read, eighteen plays today on the pro level. I don't care if it's CFL NFL. These guys are too good than I have an open playbook and have all the bullets at your disposal. So I think it's going to take a little bit of time, but we've got time for Johnny this about doing what he loved and being around the guy and he's fired up and ready to roll. Yeah. Every time I've talked to him including yesterday about this. It's all about just taking that next step to becoming the football player. He knows he can be. This is just another kind of thrown path a little bit. But at the same time he is a competitor. So I think the, he'll hit this in full stride. It'll be interesting to hear his perspective of it later this week because I can only imagine the conversations with him and Mike Sherman. Now it's like coming full circle for who knows how long. But with all the stuff that went down when they were recruiting Johnny AM and he was committed to Oregon all it's up. It'll be very interesting to get that inside just I mean, it feels like it was like ten years ago, but I guess it wasn't. I'm getting old. Eric, I feel like everything was like ten years ago. New me both. I think it was. I mean, I, it's wasn't all seven, eight. Something like that. I mean those cases it does go quick..

"Do you NFL training camps rolling out this week. In earnest we had a terrible, story yesterday, Minnesota Vikings offensive, line coach Tony Sporanos died unexpectedly at the age of. Fifty six the team made a shocking announcement. Yesterday afternoon Sparrow had complained about chest pains and went to the hospital. On Thursday a source, tells ESPN's Chris Mortensen Speranza underwent tests and was released. On Friday the source. Said Sperone his wife found him unconscious yesterday morning as they prepared to leave for church but could not. Revive him he was the assistant and assistant with the Minnesota Vikings for the past. Two seasons he worked for nine NFL teams over nineteen years with head coaching stints in Miami and on an interim basis with Oakland Raiders in two. Thousand fourteen he also held positions with the Browns with, Washington Jacksonville Dallas San Francisco and the New. York Jets and you may remember one of the better single season coaching jobs in, recent memory two, thousand eight the. Miami Dolphins remember they got Chad Pennington who was basically Discarded after the jets got Debretts farve there was this obviously the, the, the, New England Patriots have been a dynasty in the. AFC and have owned the AFC, east the, Miami Dolphins in, two thousand eight with Chad Pennington lost their first two. Games and then won eleven of their next. Fourteen coming off a year where they went one in fifteen that eleven. And five season for, the Miami Dolphins in two thousand eight is the only. Year in the last. Fifteen that the patriots didn't win the division and that eleven and five season is the only time in. The history of the National Football League that a coach led his team to the. Playoffs after his team won one game or less the previous year did a fantastic job with that Miami team in reading number of the tributes from. Players who played for him not just in Minnesota but, also Miami and other spots a devoted family. Man his daughter apparently just got married two weeks ago four grandchildren and so the, NFL world mourning, the loss of. A longtime assistant and head coach Tony spurlock Meanwhile in Canada Johnny Manziel has been traded can't play for the Hamilton tiger cats can't get on the field so they have traded him to the Montreal Alouette according to a TSN and reunites him with a familiar face Mike Sherman coach Manzella Texas a. and m. during his redshirt freshman season of two thousand eleven that was sherman's final season coaching the aggies I don't follow a ton of CFL football but the Alouette severity tried three different quarterbacks they have the worst offense in the l. so maybe Menzel is actually going to get a chance to, play that chance did, not exist with the Hamilton tiger, cats Johnny Manziel is. In Montreal and you're hearing time and again about, you know. What are the big issues between players and owners in the NFL is players one, guaranteed, money Owners aren't willing to give, it to them But they can look no further than the second pick in this year's draft saquon Barkley the New York Giants according to NFL media's Ian Rapoport are. Set to sign Barclay to his. Rookie deal that'll pay him thirty one point two million. Dollars guaranteed a four year deal fully guaranteed now rookies obviously have a lot less wiggle. Room than they did pre two thousand eleven the new CBA basically dictates with these guys are going to get the deal comes with, signing bonus of just over twenty million dollars and there's apparently, offset language that will keep Barclay from quote double dipping in the event of the giants. Cut him before the end of the contract and also it's worth pointing out that New York holds, the fifth an option for a fifth year which, is the case for all first round picks but it goes to show an Zeki l. fully. Guaranteed deal from the Dallas Cowboys didn't. Payments much money didn't go. As early in the draft. Is partly did there's a sticking point there Players and. Owners players want more guaranteed money owners don't want to give it to him but anecdotally they can Kirk cousins free agent Minnesota fully,.

"No and king or your wife did yeah we were sitting around trying to think of a name. For like about three weeks after I signed with NBC and every name somebody. Hated we've thought of two hundred names and one day and. King says hey isn't the Sunday night In called football night in America why don't you call your, column, football morning in America And I said. To myself Sam flood is going to like that name We're going to get some agreement on that one right. There I think king deserves a little cut of the KYW due, to I think she gets a little cut All right the topic. Right now in the NFL was what Oh look out We got a spill and I'll six-year. Bill the, topic I, mean I guess unfortunately is Terrel Owens or. Levy on Bill let me start. With, Sarah head Do we know what his gripe is I assume I mean look I I'm assuming that it's the I got into my third year and the way I look at that basically is. That two thirds of the three hundred and some odd people who were? In. The pro football hall of fame got in after? Their first year of eligibility does? That, make Harry Carson and Ron Yeary and Lynn Swann and, Fran tarkenton does that make them less hall of, fame deserving does that make their bus. Different no it's just the silliest controversy in hall of. Fame history, but it's, a controversy so we must address it but. Also this is what he wants I mean Yeah if he went there and, just said thank, you ungrateful and it's great to. Join these these fellow hall. Of famers You know there's there's no I was out in, Tahoe last week that golf tournament. Aaron Rodgers out there but was out, having a drink with a bunch of older guys like people of? Peter king's, generation and one of them said to me does he have any idea. How for the, rest of his life I mean, he's going to be able to make money off the hall of fame now if he this is, the hall of fame is he going. To be able to make money off the hall of fame and this was a this. Was a, very well respected person and so you know the? Hall? Of fame sort. Of shuffles, business hall of famers ways I mean are they, going to do that with Tarallo wins now I don't know it's I that's, not the. Biggest reason or the biggest anything but it just strikes? Me, that he's cutting off his nose despite, his face but, whatever should he have been a. First ballot hall of Famer I mean I've supported him all along I didn't think it was some, grave injustice because I do think there were some things against him Nobody. Wants to hear this but he was a third of a teammate that's all there is to it And he dropped the ball a lot particularly later in his career. I in my. Opinion though without any question he deserves to be in the pro football hall of fame I, supported him I'm glad he's in and I could? Care less whether he's in canton or not in Kim, do we view Randy moss differently than we do. And I think we do because Randy moss. To me I look at Randy moss is a singular, player I don't look at Tarallo Enzi singular player I think Randy. Moss was such an incredible, deep thread so incredibly great stretching the field and dominating games with his speed And his hands deep downfield. He had great hands I I mean I. Look at Randy moss is being fifteen percent better player, whatever the number save and tear allowance also he's grown up yeah Yeah he has Randy moss who's really has yeah yeah he's shirt. And now Tara loans wants to still make a comeback in the CFL I read I just read that this morning on my way up here in teaches own if he wants to do it I will say, this few years, ago when, I. Was running the QB we had CFL week and I went up to two games in the NFL and I met like three. Or four, coaches had long conversation John health, Nagel remember him yeah he was a either a coach or, GM of the stampede IRS state Penn State. Guy anyway as the. Former giants quarterback coach. But anyway they all all these coaches say all these guys come up from. The US and they say..

"Event than triggers or some you know great cabin i think it was just just the sheer arithmetic about of the laws is what weighed them down and that was it but i mean you know and again there's a whole bunch of stories connected with it are williams fate is expansion pf fee in full of course he was apoplectic when he found out but nobody else did so i'm pretty sure he ends up suing the league to try and get some of it back is just turns out to be schloss but in dive kind of quietly and without like a lawn fewer you in think when it companies something you know fairly fairly significant story in canadian sports and just kinda well here they go again and and they were gone and they were gone seemingly as and quickly as it has appeared do you think the nfl ever feared or or fear maybe a strong word but what was concerned about the the cfl because i do think there is there a bunch of folks who think that and of course this is not the cause because you just mentioned that it wasn't sort of one real thing but when when the nfl in late ninety five announced that the cleveland browns we're going to move to baltimore at almost seem like if there was any life in the cfl that might be going forward st you know striking dagger in the heart of the fledgling baltimore don't call them or maybe don't call them colts franchise stallions was basically a delta deathknell by by the nfl moving back into to baltimore.

"Twelve thousand fifteen thousand eleven thousand so they couldn't make a go of it which is unfortunate because you know what you know williams seem to want to make you know legitimate effort to to build a franchise they're memphis unfortunately you know again they go out they hire as the bell guy in sorry blanking on the name i'll come back to the minute the damon allen another very big cfl quarterback they bring pepper rodgers in you know big name in nc double a coaching and it just doesn't work in fact like memphis is more famous for than stadium they played in than anything they did on the field it just yes it just by by by now any momentum that had been generated by the little bit of the generated by sacramento and my baltimore had dissipated well you had to you had mentioned earlier and i think these are the two franchises in particular right you and you hinted that it with birmingham right this is these are two quintessential shall we say southern football markets that college football and on fridays frankly highschool ball seems to dominate the landscape and it looks like both of these franchises argued to the cfl management that they as the season dragged on that they should play their games on sunday afternoons to avoid competing with those saturday college football and friday night high school football but of course you know that it also belies the fact that that sunday's are when last we checked nfl football days right so it doesn't seem like there's a win win there at any any way shape or form but you also hint at memphis right so and maybe this is the best example sorry sort of maybe blue this line earlier but one of the stadium what of the liberty bowl because as i said earlier right some compromises many compromises seem to have been need with just about every one of these american franchises around the integrity of the cfl markings and field size but it.

"Be johnny to create that's what the nfl's about you got a quarterback that run around and make things happen you're going to be successful so i couldn't be more excited for him to see him on tv watching be johnny but to see a young man that has grown up a young man that realizes his mistakes in wants to rectify them so i hope he gets another shot in the nfl i don't think he will but i i really don't i just i just don't it's so hard in the nfl there's always a new batch of guys coming in manziel is such a niche in what he does it's just it's just tough you know maybe you will and i'm not saying he won't i just don't i don't see it happening i hope he is unbelievably successful cfl career and hopefully a reality tv show someday i think if he has a marginally successful cfl season i think somebody in the nfl gives him a shot like if he and hamilton good place for him to it's not one of the more populated canadian cities i've obviously never been there i don't it's proximity to toronto probably an hour i'm guessing but it's probably the right place for him but i think that because of his athleticism and his bill i think at some point i think if he stays out of trouble which i believe he will and he's marginally successful first off he's got to take the job from jeremiah mazzola so if he is able to do that and be moderately successful i bet you i have a feeling he'll get a shot somewhere and and there was interest when i talked to scouts at the pro day they said there's a lot of interest in an even a scout that i know personally and.

"Will not be silenced there you go oh yeah yeah yeah you have your canadian positions in american positions so explain that i was gonna say i have never heard anything about this you gotta tell me a little bit more craig okay so so here's the deal with the so what the cfl you'll have you have to have a certain amount of canadian on the field at any time and so they'll be typically you know and and you know because the canadian fans like seeing canadians out there if it were if there wasn't this will it would be all us guys basically because there's just such a surplus of talent right from the us and you know you might get a few canadian guys but you know really few and far between and up in canada hockey king up here and so they're really starting to develop their football talent a little bit more but still it's it's the population wise instance size of california they're really trying to compete with the whole united states and and so to keep the canadian you know influence i guess on the team they have you know about the read positions though on defense and then on offense to put canadian so typically it'll be like a defensive tackle or safety or a full back you know and or a wide receiver typically you'll have those sorts of you know offense of liming usually have like guards to because those are a little bit easier to find and you know if you have a horrible person that guard you can get a little bit a little bit of help well i'm usually licking my chops if i'm going against the canadian guy up in the cfl and so but there are few good you know there's a few good guys up here and they get they get paid a little bit better than the good us guys because you know the supply and demand.

"But there's also something to the idea of over saturation in an overkill the cfl doesn't get nearly as much attention as the nfl even though their seasons are not the same time will the xfl and the what is it called again the af it makes me want to do the aarp which it does features of older retired nfl guys that's not really fair the af and soon the xfl after that will football fans feel teague coming off of the super bowl launching right into a brand new football league and we had a caller make a valid point what about the talent level it's hard for nfl teams to keep a fifty three man roster that's talented that's deep and a lot of that has to do with the salary cap but it also has to do with injuries you're certainly not gonna get nfl players unless they've been cut from their own teams or can't find a free agent til they're not going to be allowed to participate nor would they want to more than likely even if they didn't make the super bowl because the pounding over the course of the season is so great that you need that time off so when you think about going from the super bowl right into another football season is that the ugly red headed stepchild of the nfl and people aren't gonna pay attention or they might tune in but at the competitions.
