A corporate management team is supposed to make a lot of money. They're supposed to get ninety five million dollars for creating a business that has performed well for a period of time. That has generated you know for ninety, five, million bucks. You'd better be generating you know at least a billion or more couple of billion hopefully in free cash flow over a period of time consistently, right a real sustainable business for that kind of reward. You don't get paid that kind of money just for getting a loan to be in a business that you were in for six years out of your one, hundred, thirty, one year history and sucked at. Okay that's not the way this is supposed to work. This is the ranking crony capitalism, the EST crony capitalism. And crony capitalism is when you get paid for no in people, right it starts looking suspicious back in May when they're moving seventy million bucks from China to the US, it looks like they already knew they were going to do something and then Oh, two days later trump invokes this this executive order appropriating these loans for this kind of stuff and then up six days. Later, we start granting ourselves options at prices that suggests we know the stock is GonNa take off like a rocket ship. Then we do it again on July twenty seven just to show you how utterly stupid we are. This is not the way it's supposed to work they basically what they did here was. They just took money from well, you know this government money. So you could say they took taxpayer money and they said how can we get way too much of this money in our own pockets? Oh, I know let's grant ourselves a bunch of options. Okay, your stand. Now, I don't have a problem with option grants in general I. Realize people need to be incentivized. It's just the way. Things are nowadays right to to attract good management. You gotta pay them. What looks like way too much money a lot of the time, but this is not that. This is a management team taking money from taxpayers and really taken ultimately from shareholders as well. They're given themselves equity for free that the shareholders have to buy in the market. This isn't the only episode of this. You'RE GONNA see there was a smaller episode that I I kinda filed this way I didn't think I was going to mention it but there was a guy. David? This resilience edition on these episodes were talking with entrepreneurs and business leaders about how they're adapting to these difficult economic times and today show we're going to hear from Brian Chess the CEO and Co founder of Airbnb back in twenty sixteen, we spoke with Brian's Co founder Joe Gebbie at, and he told the amazing story of how they founded and built the company, and if you haven't heard it, be sure to check it out. Now, of course, we are in a very different time and a few months ago Brian wrote a letter to the entire staff. AIRBNB letting them know that twenty five percent of the company was going to be laid off. This has been by far for us. The most difficult thing that we've experienced since we started the company a dozen years ago and I think join us to talk about how starting airbnb basically this idea that like strange who live each other live with each other like that was the hardest thing we were ever GonNa do it was like pushing a rock hill and it turned out that trying to run a company that does travel preparing to go public in the middle of pandemic is about as hard. I think that what people want right now just more fundamentally is connection is like the thing that we've always wanted we want connection to each other and now you have to fight for it. You know you have to make a conscious effort for it get on the one hand I'm closer to some people I've ever been in my life probably closer to my life co-founders donate we talk all the time and when you're going through crazy periods of time, it has a way of bringing you closer together but also has a way of making your bubble a little bit smaller and that's probably what's happened for me. Yeah. You you wrote a letter to your employees that is posted publicly that letter is was remarkable. It was so transparent. You had to lay off a quarter of your employees in May and you could see how painful it was for you to write that letter it was extremely transparent. You described the process for how you had to make the hard decision But also you know that every employee would receive fourteen weeks of of pay plus Severinsen insurance for a year and they keep their laptops and there were resources to help the employees Kind of walk me through how you how you came to to write that letter and How you kind of dealt with that just emotionally. Yeah there is no playbook. To lay people off in that's the kind of thing that if there was a playbook, you should never use it because the thing that people want more than anything. They want humanity they want compassion and that means that you need to treat people like like people like individually not robotically you know when the crisis happened, we felt in mid March it was pretty serious. We spent twelve years building airbnb in the we lost eighty percent of business in eight weeks. You know we're one of the success stories right and then suddenly eight weeks there's. All sorts of concerns articles willer survive never thought. I'd read an article like that. And we made a lot of hard decisions. We I cut enormous cost. We cut over a billion dollars plan marketing spend. We quickly raised two billion dollars. It's not easy to raise two billion dollars. It's more difficult to raise two billion dollars from your travel company. It's a pandemic and you've lost eighty percent business eight weeks. The people get nervous thankfully we had some great investors step up but we had to do that deal that was like over the course of seventy two hours still like get the deal done it was the. Fastest deal thing from have ever done and they've ever done. So before that layup even happened, I wrote a couple principals and I said, we have a hunt handful of stakeholders we have to I. Make sure that we act quickly in with all stakeholders. Remind we're going to be remembered probably for how he handled this crisis Andy Grove this famous entrepreneur said bad comes destroyed by crisis good company survive crisis in great companies thrive or are defined by crisis I said, we're not going to be the kind of company will be destroyed by this. We're GONNA try to take each of our stack holders and when we got to the employees, we basically had exhausted options having raised two billion dollars. We came to the conclusion that we would have to lay off when we confronted to hard truth the hard truth number one was this that we did not know when trouble would return nobody did and the second thing we knew is that when travel would return, it would look fundamentally different than the travel before the pandemic and so our business would have to look different and we'd have. To change the shape of our business that we focused on, and so then we just realized that we had to approach this with a sense of humanity said we should be as generous as we possibly could be in not less generous than that. Why would you do that until we came up with a handful of things that we did to try to help people in this very difficult time We did a fourteen sevens puts a week pre or service we felt like well, this is a health crisis people need health insurance, and so we made sure that everyone had at least one year of health insurance even after ever getting laid off one of the things that I'm most proud of that our team came up with Joe in the team came to me and they said, you know what? We have a recruiting team maybe we dedicate a percentage of the recruiting team to outplacement for the people

We tell depot wallgreens. So data for good is an extension of the vision of. Using data to improve people's lives that we launched during the coronavirus. During this crisis and we we started by giving away some of our data to scientists to academics researchers. Some. Not for profits to help government agencies with policy making and it was Kinda shocking to me that government entities how much they fly blind. They don't have the information on how their towns cities. Counties are doing. Early and I was like well, their sales tax I mean why? Why wouldn't they get that quickly but apparently, even sales tax information takes a couple of months for a for them to get information. So data data for good was first about helping government policymakers by giving them the information they need to navigate their own decisions, but then it quickly expanded on to provide businesses visibility they need themselves to navigate this crisis and so. you know insights on. What customers are doing outside of businesses own four walls. That's been our mantra for for a long time that's always been important. But it's become absolutely critical during Cova. This sort of outside in view of consumer behavior has become essential especially now because you know during particularly in the march, April. But even even now, you know where there's been a hole punched in their own data that the businesses were looking at you know the purchases in their own stores. On. Their own websites because people just stop coming in coming in a lot less. So businesses have been flying completely blind kind of like A. analogy is like a fighter pilot flying between two Kanye walls that instrumentation So right now, we're delivering through partnerships with companies like Deloitte, accenture and bane and McKinsey weekly updates to businesses to help them navigate. We're also providing the press in our website affinity solutions, dot COM and weekly updates on what's happening in the economy to call it a business recovery scorecard. which looks at bellwether categories like. Grocery and and home delivery and. You know as people come out of their homes So it'll be interesting. You know that data, which is for the good of not for profit scientists. Robo Global. Half of adults age twenty five and older have virtually visited a healthcare provider over the last few painful months. The firm says music to the ears of anyone who runs a telehealth company more than half of those patients were brand new to telemedicine can handle one more statistic well, nine out of ten of those patients told Robo. that. They'd be happy to see Dr Virtual again most likely that include you. So why am I telling you all this or because at least two companies are making big hey from this socially distanced phenomenon last week telemedicine leader Tele Doc announced it's buying Digital Health, coaching? Company. Forget this eighteen and a half billion dollars. It's rare to see those kinds of numbers. Even in Silicon Valley acquisitions, although there are many privately owned telemedicine companies, Tele Doc which was founded in two thousand and two is the only publicly traded one because of the pandemic business is booming in early March, the company was conducting about ten thousand remote medical appointments a day just a month. Later, that number had doubled. The company told The Wall Street Journal. Tele Doc is purchasing a company called the von. Go using Technology Levin go remotely monitors and coaches patients with chronic illnesses. CEO Glenn Tolman founded the company after his young son was diagnosed with type one diabetes. The Condition Levin go is best known for the publicly traded company later expanded to help care for people suffering from chronic problems like high blood, pressure, anxiety, and depression. According to CNBC Tele Doc had long planned to add services for remotely managing chronic conditions and La. bongos leaders had been thinking about moving into telehealth. The two companies quote were either on a path of convergence or collision Tele Doc CEO Jason Gora Vic told. CNBC. Industry publication healthcare dive calls the do the country's first digital health megamerger and by far the largest consider this Google is working on an acquisition a fitbit for what now looks like a meager two billion dollars the trade publication points out. The TALLADEGA deal is set to close by the end of the year proved it'll create an entity worth thirty, seven, billion dollars expected revenues in its first year with top a billion dollars or almost double the two companies sales this year sound promising well, not so fast Wall Street dinged both company's stock prices saying the price was inflated and that telehealth might be an covert bubble. which wants the pandemic finally, Wayne's could pop furthermore there are plenty of challenges on both sides. Tell dot faces a host of telemedicine rivals such as privately held doctor on demand but perhaps the bigger issue is that the eye-popping size of the deal could create copycats other big healthcare companies both virtual and traditional have probably already started shopping for their own remote chronic care management acquisitions. The stock price of Levine go rival Barrio health, which also manages chronic illnesses spiked almost thirty percent following the news. But let's get real. What could all this mean for most of us? One Stop Virtual healthcare management that's at least part of the answer, your blood pressure spikes you'll see it on your digital sensor and maybe through that same device, your virtual doctor will be contacted automatically if it gets bad enough, it's a future that could be more convenient, less personal, not very private and very lucrative for digital health entrepreneurs. So tell me a little bit about yourself I within we've been chatting for half an hour and I don't think I know how you got into the care end of things. Absolutely and Like like you I am a caregiver I was thrust into it. With the the typical call right? We all get the call that says. I know your life was on a path. But it's now going to go in a completely different direction and you may or may not recover on that path but here's what's happening the way it happened for me. I'm actually has a good ending to it. So I'll I'll give you the the end of the book as I give you the beginning of the book and my father I was driving down the road with my mother he was in his mid seventies and. Started to drive radically in his turned out my mother who is much smarter than medically anyway than she should be said, doesn't look right and drove my father to the hospital where they found out he had an advanced brain tumor. and. Everything was fine until it wasn't right and so he had a brain surgery. And a hundred percent recovery from the brain surgery except for one little problem. Is paralyzed from the neck down. And Yeah didn't expect that to happen either they stocked her said there's no reason it should happen but here we were planning. Just, a normal Tuesday afternoon we were planning on a normal Tuesday we're going to do whatever. We really do the rest of the week and working and see each other and that will get time and now. Instead my mother and my brother and I were trying to figure out. What do you do with somebody who is paralyzed from the neck down who can't speak WHO's basically in a coma and they don't know what the prognosis is. Now fortunately for us I told you the story ends well. My father. After about nine months of having to learn how to speak again and walk again and all that stuff. About Ninety eight percent. None of the only thing that he had as a residual was he had what they call it drop foot right? His his right foot doesn't pick up all the way and so he ends up wearing a brace on to help him keep his foot up because otherwise he'd have the second biggest problem, which is what most older folks have, which they trip and fall and hurt themselves right But. He was really fortunate because he had a long term care insurance policy. So. When I talk about caregiving. One of the first things I say to people is we were incredibly fortunate were incredibly fortunate that the outcome was positive as I said, he's now my father turned eighty five in May and he is. As cantankerous Z. was. For my whole life, and so he's everything he should be and we didn't have to worry at no point. Did we have to worry like most caregivers do on how to pay for things? He had a long term care insurance policy. So money wasn't the issue it was just a matter of emergency care and what to do and so. I broke into this industry twenty five years ago in the insurance business. And came to genuine. To. Help them build out a portfolio of products and services around caregiving and the financing of aging in so. It's something that's near and dear to my heart is near and dear to most of the folks including our CEO. And all of our senior leaders were all caregivers in one way or another, and so we bring to the idea in the solution, not just the technical or academic end. But we're all We bring the empathy of people who provide care on an ongoing basis to, and so we think we we kinda understand what the average caregiver GOSTA.

Thank you offer for sharing that so. I think to start. This is a really big question, but obviously, the civil rights movement that's happening right now has been. Very prominent in the news in the last month, it's obviously never not existed but it suddenly. You know the fifteen percent pledge. Protest every single day. Brands are really saying I. WanNa make a difference they're publicly. Saying I'm going to do all these things to be more diverse, etc, etc. Now, a lot of their ex employees or or. You know. Consumers are calling them out for not practicing what what they are are pre chain and I'm curious to know from you all your all veterans in this industry you've you've witnessed this the systemic racism that is particular to fashion. What what do you think? The biggest issue is Ashen and that we can start working on or You know people are already working on but what is the? Biggest point that we need to tackle in order to start fixing all the little problems that have come out of this. Don't know if one of you wants to start. I'll. Brand half. Start I think on what Sandrine Lindsay is doing is asking with the Black Fashion Council asking brands to actually put a quantitative solution in place it's the same thing that Aurora Jane tasked with a fifteen percent pledge i. think the brands have to fully commit and the way that they can fully commit being you know here's exactly what we're going to do. So when you say I want my sales to get better you don't say go out to your. Team and say, you know what we want better cells next year what you do is you say WanNa ten percent increase we want to fifteen percent increase you know right so you create very clear goals so that you know if you're successful in meeting those goals or not successful meeting notes and if you're not successful, there are things you put in place to make sure you overcome that in me that all it's the same thing with this rain so I think. The first thing that Branston do is say, what is our commitment? What is our our firm commitment? Let's start with a very clear commitment and work our way back because my fear is that if we just start having conversations in conversation is a really key piece to this in having with lack people in non black people ruling to have honest dialogue. And then you work backwards from the air and doing what you have to do to to meet that goal. I one hundred percent agree into because of that I think about what the solutions, all the problem. I always come back to equity. And that's ultimately I think about risk driving for and I think what makes this time so ready Angry special in many ways, is that the asking leadership to support us with? Of. Traditional tax. Supporting. Mental. Internships I think already doing now is we're actually asking our structures like quite literally reopen is themselves to include us and then from where all collectively dying today. There's no way you can teach someone to unlearn something that was you know systematically in place for all of this time. So it's essential for us to not only educate work alongside people who are really willing and ready to make those changes. "Congressman John Robert Louis was born in Troy Alabama on February twenty first nineteen, forty, two sharecroppers, Willie Mae, and Eddie Lewis. He is known for telling the story of preaching chickens at the boy from troy as he was nicknamed went on to become revered world leader and fearless advocate for voting rights organizing sit ins in. Nashville in nineteen sixty and becoming one of the original freedom writers Mr Lewis joined the Movement for civil rights and never looked back. As the chairman of snake he served as the youngest speaker at the march on Washington in nineteen, sixty three. In nineteen, sixty, five alongside reverend hosea, Williams Congressman Lewis led a march for voting rights across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma Alabama where he endured violent attacks by state troopers and vigilantes. Mr. Lewis fell to the ground with a fractured skull and five months later, president Lyndon B, Johnson signed the voting rights act of nineteen, sixty five until now. On the other side of that bridge Mr Lewis marched on into a life in career of activism and public service. He lost his first attempt at running for Congress in nineteen seventy seven was appointed the same year by President Jimmy Carter to the Director of action a Federal Agency for volunteerism. He then won a seat on the Atlantic City Council in nineteen eighty one and five years later ran for Congress in one. So much of the conversation about congressman, John. Lewis has been about his activism, but he stood on so many legislative accomplishments including sponsoring or co sponsoring more than eleven hundred bills. One of the most notable bills gave us the National Museum of African American History and culture in two thousand three. He served as a subcommittee chair for oversight for the prestigious ways and means. Committee, and after the retirement of Congressman John Conyers. became the dean of the Congressional. Black Caucus in twenty nineteen, he presided over the House floor as Congress passed hr four. Since his passing the bill was renamed the John Lewis Voting Rights Act which was adopted by unanimous consent. Before being admitted to the hospital, MR? Lewis stood in the heart of Black Lives Matter Plaza. He took his last breath on July seventeenth twenty twenty. But his legacy lives on in all of us. We begin this John Lewis. Tribu. where he also began with civil rights joining me for this very important conversation are Vanita Gupta President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on civil and Human Rights Derek Johnson, president and CEO of the of Lacey Pe-. Reverend, Michael Pfleger the senior pastor of the faith community of Saint. SAVINA. I believe the year before you got to DOJ. The the case, the decision that gutted the voting rights act shelby versus holder, and so I wanna hear from you on some of the things that you experienced working with Mr Lewis on the other side of that because we know that right after that, all of the advocacy picked up to reinstate section five to get the voting rights on provision where they needed to be in Congress. And so just talk a little bit about some of your work with Mr Lewis on those issues. Shore. Is Truly an honor to be here with my. Warrior colleagues and friends and loved ones in the movement. Especially on today Angela. I think probably all of us were in tears watching Mr Lewis Funeral you know twenty thirteen is you mentioned that United States Supreme Court gutted the heart of the voting rights act in a devastating decision the shelby county versus holder decision. That really took away the longstanding tool of one of the most effective pieces of federal legislation in our nation's history in the voting rights act. That quired states with long histories of racial discrimination in voting to pre clear with the United States Justice Department changes made at the local level for election practices that had racially discriminatory impact. And the removal of that tool within hours of that decision coming down for the United. States. Court states like, North Carolina Texas enacted, Monster? Voter. Laws doing everything from. Putting forth restrictive voting laws cutting back early voting same day registration. And it took years to litigate and to hamlet the Justice Department did working with advocates and activists in all states. Where so years for federal courts in a place like North Carolina finally say that the State legislators North Carolina had enacted there. Monster Voter Suppression Law would such surgical precision to disenfranchise African Americans and meanwhile countless elections had taken place but Mr Lewis of legacy was that in the face of this overwhelmingly bad decision for voting rights he immediately. Went to action, which is always his way was never in a would not allow despair to hold him back inside we need to do everything we can restore it in went to work with legislative partners in the Congressional Black Caucus to put forth a bill immediately to restore it on every prior reauthorization of the voting. Rights. Act angelides always been done under. The Watch of Republican president and at least one house of Congress being Republican the unfortunate thing is after this decision, the really has not been bipartisan support and but Mr Lewis Year after year would stand at the podium introduced the law in say or in it for the long haul I've been there before I almost lost my life fighting for this law. In one, thousand, nine, sixty five, and we will persevere to us and we've got to keep our eye on the prize and we're not gonNA. Let go until the day that the bill becomes law. So in this moment. On where we're seeing a lot of performance morning by Senate Republicans who obstructed day after day everything that he has stood for and fought for with his life. It is time not only for us to restore the voting rights act passed the voting rights advancement act but to do everything else that we can to ensure open voting and go beyond it as President Obama said today won't be enough to rest and return to the status quo. It is time for this country to unregarded into make our democracy work for all of us in Gulf Far Beyon- restoration of the voting rights act in this moment.
