"You're coming as a subject of the empire at this point one thing that's undeniable is we come in. This was very much true in terms of the ant. Nine when you're going from after the death of trajan starting with hadrian you're getting these bearded figures as emperor on coinage or public statuary. Hadrian is very much responsible for that. Look undoubtedly being influenced by what you so. So cleverly described as his greek fetish. Lehto has a beard. Aristotle has a beard critise has a beard though when it comes to the perception publicly. It's not implausible because they have these statues all over the place of these bearded figures on top of that coinage which is still in circulation. Especially if you're talking about marcus. Aurelius marcus aurelius was very highly regarded in his time. And after there was no trying to erase him from history. What else is interesting though. He also frames himself and this is kind of bizarre as the brother of comedies. Now this does seem rather odd on. Its face doesn't it. You had like just trying to work his way in that he is an on top of that. You really want to take on all the baggage. That comes calmness. I mean goodness to have lived through. is bizarre but he twisted a very specific way first off. He emphasizes far more. That he's the adopted. Son of marcus aurelius than he does. Being the brother of communist. But you can't throw out the baby with the bath water in this case you can't have just one and ignore the other embrace it which is to say that. Even though in the case of communist he gets a damnation memorial which basically is just a very huge public decree of giving this dead figure the finger and just singing about how awful one of the ways that he takes the entirety of the baggage. Is he actually goes back and he has commodores proclaimed divine which you have to do obviously gonna take it all in and so. It's very interesting. That severance makes this play because if you are in the highest lawns of roman politics you know this is absolutely absurd. It's absolutely absurd and politicians from the beginning of time and certainly true in modern history have not made claims of being the rightful successor of some very celebrated prior leader. That happens all the time. There are plenty of people that try to ride on a great figures coattails for their own aggrandizement and their own ambitions prophet and fun. In this case. it's rather absurd is not implausible like. I said if you're a member of the roman public but it's still there and so he's trying to start his new dynasty on the back of the anti nine dynasty which as far as dynasties go and certainly the roman conceptions of it ain't a bad place to be to say they were celebrated in total even though there are clear exceptions in some of their actions during that time and they're very much associated with stability and prosperity as being good emperors. We talked about in what we missed about antoninus pious. If you're asking me to be honest with you even though he had certain flaws in certain policy areas which is one of the reasons why we went back and talked about him a bit and what we messed. He still could deserve his own episode. That's how incredibly was. He was really the medical of the good emperor which is to say good. Humored selfless talented administrator. Very much working towards what he thought was the public good and not for his own personal benefits or the people close to him or those who are helping. Keep him in power. That was kind of the reality of it but so he's trying to build a back.

"That is a big deal. So for the most part with the exception of the praetorian guard. You're not really supposed to have the military on the italian peninsula or in rome so going back to julius caesar the whole idea of crossing the rubicon which today is just a phrase. We use for a decision which there's no turning back. The has incredible importance. The die is cast if you will. You're not really supposed to have that sort of thing going on but in this case avarice marches on roman. He was pretty close by. He was stationed somewhere on the danube at that point and he takes us troops any march on rome. Which is where yuliana us is and so naturally. He has the muscle when he gets to rome and when he gets. Rome manages to get the senate to declare yuliana as an enemy of the people and promises to part in any roman for their role in the murder of pert necks. And this is particularly important when you're talking about the senators who were involved in all of that just something that's always so shocking and is one of these things where you compare it to modern society and one of the issues. We don't compare it to modern surti. It just how associated senators are with murdering people like oh like the background planning but the actual acting out the murder itself like if today's standards imagining like the senators the house of the senate on your employees members of parliament of mayan poor. I should he killing people like mad but we shouldn't be comparing history to us today. But when you do it just shocks me. How how mud happy. The actual senators themselves were in rome. It's interesting when you're making those kind of comparisons. Obviously because they're so difficult to make the one thing that we can say for sure is that we you and i in particular live in systems where you generally don't have politicians plotting to murder other politicians. Jeff that's something that is thankfully very foreign to our own domestic experience and hopefully it will remain as such yet. Yeah that's something. I'm always been very thankful for when it comes to politicians versus politicians in particular politicians in particular not other people so he makes this promise to the roman people because at this point one of the big ways he is messaging himself as a leader. One of his big guiding points of light is that he is the avenger of pert necks. That the idea that yuliana was behind the praetorian guard. Murdering him in cold blood.

"Everything had a price tag on this period of roman history. Yeah yuliana was and very high stakes negotiation in that case but as we mentioned previously and our last episode of what we missed it was not a good image was not a good image. Say the least so. This is not really a good barometer. To tell the ambitions or the or the aptitude. Where in the past and future. You put consuls there even in a more ceremonial role because they are largely capable at the very least really well connected and capable. You get the kind of idea we're talking about here. And then of course comes. The year of the five emperors would start with the rule of pert necks after communist was finally successfully. Assassinated by narcissist is his wrestling coach and partner by strangulation. And as you so wittily. Quipped at the time communist was killed by his narcissism. That was a wonderful. When i look at that that that's classic patrick foot. Who's wondering and so pert next comes to power. And he has a pretty decent relationship with severance and in the case of pertinent had he not been assassinated he was going to be a look at initially a real reformer because he was looking to bring the senate more into the equation and getting away from the excesses of communists things of that nature. Something that in total. We don't have the time here to get into. It was much more republican. Inform which is really very interesting unfortunately gins up getting assassinated by everybody's favorite mechanism for succession power. The ultimate kingmakers. In rome of this period the praetorian guard. How many times have we heard this story patrick. How many times. You know what. I would competitive pretoria god to delete all button. Unlike anything is okay. This is gonna mess. Let's just let's just wipe it and start again like you could just beckoned of honda. Let's knock this guy out and just try again. They'll do delete button over. I'm absolutely and so when person acts is assassinated. This really starts the merry go round and the case of He does move on the situation quite expeditiously so pert necks is murdered in march of one ninety three and then by early april that is when severances troops claim him as emperor and something that he does obviously embrace at that point when yuliana ends up making a claim very shortly thereafter several just flat out ignored flat out ignores it. His claim not yuli honest. Believe me he will deal with yuliana us to say the least and he has a couple of other potential foes as well. One of this is for tickets. Niger with one of his other main rivals and in that case he was in syria at the time and then claudius albany's who at the time was governor of roman britain and so he needed to begin narrowing down the number of fronts. He had to confront in order to consolidate his claim onto power for the roman empire and one of the first thing he does is actually not military. It is political and in a sense diplomatic. As well which is of albany's he ends up making a concession to albany's which is he gives. Albany albany's the title of caesar. This is interesting so at this point in time. The title of caesar actually goes to the current emperor's era parent whether that be a son who was there waiting in the wings or an adopted son. It was a situation. I think in all likelihood that both men knew was not a long-term arrangement but albany very least seem contented to go along with it at that point in time and more importantly it buys severance time to deal with him later he kind of sidesteps some and it looks on the outside like a power sharing agreement but realpolitik. It was just buying time and of course at that point. He also couldn't deal niger because he was too far away. He wasn't yet the person you had to deal with. But in the case of uley honest he basically did something..

"It's just interesting. Roman society new structure of it could have a video onto the video clinton how to cuss into suppose. Oh totally absolutely. There's a lot there to come from and coming from the modern perspective. Of course were a lot more whether it mentioned earlier. We're a lot more conscious of class to be sure. And how we define it and the nature and the rules around mobile eighty largely zone. I live in countries where you can come from impoverished positions in life and rise to a a greater status. These things do happen but in the case of rome they're very very finicky when you start getting up towards the top and they have issues to say the least with such a situation so he was also very ambitious guy though. His career took some odd detours and certainly he was not just a flash in the pan a long career that saw periods of almost stagnation away. But he eventually ended up harkening out to make a name for himself and his family on the italian peninsula and he wanted to become a member of the senate and interestingly enough in this will become more and more relevant further down the line. We get here today in the segment but his initial work actually caught the attention of one. Marcus aurelius he identified him as somebody. That was talented. That was trustworthy that he's somebody that would want to be part of the inner cogs of how rome operated in the future so he benefited from his patronage. And marcus aurelius actually made on his personal imprimature. The severance as a member of the senate oddly enough for almost twenty years his career somewhat stagnated for a number reasons after initially joining the senate and the kind of appointments that he ended up getting were two areas. Where like if you're governor for say getting sent to places like hispania or.

That was a nice so that time straight, I back set trying to run downhill. Where is it? The three stay with the run play. This is not gonna work. I tried to go over left tackle and had no chance from the beginning as Brad Rickshaw carried the ball and was absolutely stopped cold may have lost a yard or so on the plate, led by Roberts. The woman's in Delaware. Every Roberts another transfer, we said how money they've got up here. He played in Nebraska's a freshman. So it's third and goal for California. They do not want to settle for a field goal at this part of the field. Trying to pound the rock down here, packing the box, getting everybody inside. Obviously, part of their goal line game plan has been to run that ball inside my third and goal of the three. They stay with the run play, trying to get their down to the two. They're not going to get in the end zone and the ball is loose. Oregon State may have it. Oregon State comes up with it. The question is, was the runner down? I think he was probably down. I'm pretty sure he was down just over makes the stop gets the ball. But the play was over. So the bears get a break, and now they get a chance to go for it. And now we get a time out signal. What's the Largest Lake in the World?

"Siberia's Lake Cal is not your average. Lake. At forty, nine miles wide by three hundred and ninety, five miles long that seventy, nine by six, hundred and thirty, five kilometers. It's the world's largest freshwater lake and with history that dates back twenty, five, million years it's also Earth's oldest. But size and age aren't the only things that make this. Lake. Special. Lake by cow is also home to more than three thousand, seven, hundred different species, many of which are only found in the Baikal region. That's why by cows often considered the Galapagos of Russia. No in case it's bio-diversity doesn't dazzle you here's another but Julia fact. Lake by cow has its own version of the Loch ness monster. Its name translates to water dragon master and it's described as a giant sturgeon with a prominent stout, an armored plating along the back. The monsters history goes back centuries with ancient carvings depicting this terrifying creature. Interest peaked we thought. So here's a starter guide to this ancient beautiful and mysterious late, which is by the way a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Baikal is located in southern Russia near the border of Mongolia, its depth of five thousand, three, hundred feet about one thousand, six, hundred meters makes it the world's deepest lake about five hundred feet or two hundred meters it's also famous for its clarity of water and ice. When the lake is frozen, you can see dozens of meters or hundreds of feet down. And as we said at the top, it's also the world's largest lake that size twelve, thousand, two, hundred, square miles, or thirty one, thousand, six, hundred square kilometers makes it comparable in volume to the entire Amazon Basin? A first scale? It reportedly takes about three hundred and thirty years for single water molecule to flow from inlet to inlet. So. How did like by cow get so massive About twenty, five, million ago lake by CAL formed through fractures and shifting within Earth's crust. It wasn't Lake Baikal as we know it. Now, though experts believe it was a series of lakes similar to the Great Lakes in the United States while scientists aren't positive how lake by CAL went for many lakes to the behemoth. It is today they do have theories. It could have been sinking earth erosion earthquakes or increased water from melting glaciers although it's likely a mix of these factors and more. That unifying change took place in the pleasing epoch about five point three to two point five million years ago. But this lake isn't finished growing. It's expanding at a rate of about point seven inches to centimeters every year at the same speed at which Africa in South America are drifting apart. At this speed, some scientists believe lake by Baikal is actually an ocean in the making. The lake boasts twenty-seven islands, the largest of which spans two, hundred, eighty square miles or seven, hundred, twenty, five square kilometers and has its own lake mountains and the population of fifteen hundred residents. The locals connected to power van underwater cable in two, thousand and five, and we're connected to the Internet shortly after. Some Call Lake by Cao, the Galapagos of Russia not only because it has an impressive array of those nearly four thousand species but also because eighty percent of those animals are found nowhere else. One reason for this unique biodiversity is the lakes. Array of hydrothermal vents which are commonly found in oceans but lake by cow is the only freshwater lake known to have them. Cold water from the lake enters cracks in the Earth's crust through these hydrothermal vents. When the water reaches magma, it heats up, then returns resurfacing with minerals and heat. These rich minerals are probably the reason some of the lakes most unusual species were able to develop including several unique fish and the nerpa seal species, which is the only exclusively freshwater seal species in the world and its evolution is mysterious and some scientists believe it arrived by a prehistoric river from the Arctic But beyond seals fish other common animals found in the forests and mountains surrounding Lake Baikal include. Elk. Reindeer links wild-boar, and of course, the lakes frequently reported water dragon master. And this ancient lake has another air of mystery about it. UFO sightings. Many locals have reported strange lights and alien spacecraft throughout the years and several Soviet era documents mention ufo instance in sightings around Earth's largest lake. However for all of its natural wonder, amazing wildlife end stranger sides for lake cows one hundred, thousand permanent residents it's simply home. Made, occupations are forestry agriculture, fisheries, hunting, and tourism though that's currently on hold due to covid nineteen. Here's hoping they opened back up soon.

"And the kick us off today we got Cao Cao welcome thank you for taking my call listen I'm much calling about some metal railing on my porch and I've heard you speak to aluminum in the past but the two supports on either side of the awning it's a very decorative kind of great mind thing which the older I get it's less about sentencing design and more solution but listen other than just a thorough thing in being it would there be a process in between before the pain comes on back with give me a a better longevity what are you doing when you sand you just do a good metal primer and a good a good pain on top of that yeah well I tell you this is the set my mind when I came into the home of over twenty years ago my dad that was a little younger each of the project on himself but basically I just wanted to know you know just basically sand and and get the proper paint yeah for the most part that's the that's the way it is normally done there's another way and also talk about that so you know you say and you remove all the rust if you have removed all the rust you use a gray metal primer if it's still slight surface rust you would use a red oxide primer a damp read primer which is for Hary coat rust and then you know either house paint on top of that some of the really new acrylic house paint will do good some of the trimming animals Rispoli install those could be applied that's option option one and that's probably what the ninety five percent of the people do other thing that you can do in is it heavily rusted tower just slightly wrong you know that the water runs down the support you know I really don't have rust on them basically it's more the railings and I'll be honest with you over all these years it's not a lot of rust but it's it's starting to to wear a bit to and expose but it's not a lot of rust but ID it definitely it's going to be needed to be Sanders and a lot of places I think I can get by with the with the decorative that's more up and down opposed to you know sign guys but so all right do you know what kind of paint which is under less I I do not okay I I just know I know things have changed and yeah they've changed a lot really so right right one of the there's a product out called rust reformer or rust neutralizer it's under a couple of brands it's mainly used for surface rust in non flaky rust in it helps you eliminate the step of removing all the rust okay so what it is it's not a pain it's actually a chemical that creates a chemical reaction with the rust in turns the rust black in seals the rust into the metal then as a primer okay okay C. N. I'm well Herty sure the two that I mentioned have to be coated with an oil based paint it'll tell you on the label but I also believe there's a couple out there now that you can use acrylic paints on top of that the reason is there's a chemical reaction so there some warmth from the chemical reaction it can actually stain through acrylic paints so just read on the label you know what you what you need to cope that with at that point but it functions as a primer turns a black perfections it as a primer which might be nice if specially if you have you know surface rust on the ornamental park which is going to be a more difficult part to remove the rust right well listen I certainly appreciate your time and you have a nice day you do same cal thanks take care bye bye bye bye and there are some different paints out there also I know master Kim has a pain up there it actually has half I'm not mistaken like Amazon all base and there's actually glass fibers in it read challenging to put on in a nice spreadable thing code but very very hard and it too has the strength to stand up to some of the rust seals it to a point where there's not a lot of rust underneath it George welcome hi dear good morning morning I thank you for taking my call and thank you for the work using the service you do to provide answers to our questions are really appreciated thanks George so do not get your questions were about a woodworking project during refinishing some would that I first finished about seven years ago in our urethane okay the two questions the first question is is there a problem with mixing of water based and oil based polyurethane you're going to hear a which which which one I use for the first initial do you will so you want to put the water based on top of the existing well I've tried that I'm not happy with it right what happened but even well first of all they deserve this will involve the second question which is about the the preparing the word so do I need to remove all have Bob catches walking by my my bass right now he's I'm in coral valley okay I'm I'm near mid valley actually very easily yeah wow who I will so do I need to completely remove the old finish before eight do you finish if you're going to do a water based urethane and you're got an existing poly urethane I think I would maybe not only for the reason of more cosmetics because of poly urethane is going to continue to amber and that that water be sure thing stays crystal clear so I think I would I mean you can take like a six hundred wet dry sandpaper and seen that surface down in give a.

During Shutdown, Farmers And Others Lack Critical USDA Reports

"Support for NPR and the following message. Come from HBO while everyone is talking and no one is listening. Bill. Maher is ready to get real watch. The all new season of real time with Bill Maher Fridays at ten pm only on HBO it'll be cheaper than therapy. Or at farmers have been hit by the government shutdown in a different way. They are struggling to get information. The US department of agriculture usually publishes, the price sales numbers and inventory for many agricultural products. But now some of those reports are not happening. I will public radio's Amy mayor explains why this matters. Here's an example of why reports matter the government launched some of its crop and livestock reports as a response to the Soviet Union's huge purchase of US grain in the nineteen. Seventies commodities. Economist Arlen superman says the quiet purchase worth about a billion dollars at the time came as a shock then when it became known. We suddenly realized that much of our known inventory was. Sean in the markets reacted very violently commodity prices soared with that in the back of his mind Sudirman says he's now thinking about whether China could pull off a similar trick during this lag in public reporting while not likely it is possible. Superman's company relies mainly on proprietary research. But he says they use USDA figures to fact check their own. He's concerned there could be some surprises when the government reports resume particularly of wants a report start we find that. There is information that we missed that the market needs to adjust for and that's the greatest risk more immediately. Farmers. Don't have all the information. They count on in Dallas county, Iowa Marvin Shirley has been farming since the nineteen sixties and uses USDA reports to guide his decision making so Cao's sometime January, but were those give pro. Projections on ideals and the mount of cattle around without them. He may put off that sale at this time of year his family's also thinking about the amount of corn and soybean plant in the coming season. But they don't have the information. They need to make any adjustments. Shirley, says the shutdown and last year's tariffs on many US products. Create new problems for struggling farmers pros little. Pros little creating the problem is they're using taxpayer money or some other Mames to solve the problem. He created them. It just. Of very unsettling. Tar to these sure some Trump supporters in farm country don't feel unduly burdened by the shutdown. One cattle feed lot owner in Iowa said he could get by without the reports for some time and was embracing the politics of the moment saying he's quote tickled to death with what's happening. I was state university livestock. Economists leash Scholtz says the missing data means he can't put out his January reports, and he's already hearing chatter from worried farmers the longer. This goes some of that added uncertainty in the market, you know, may cause producers to not make decisions they normally would have daily price reports are still being published but January is a big month for other data a world supply and demand estimate last year's totals for US crop production and the number of cattle in the country. A USDA spokeswoman says the agency's intent is to publish them all once the government reopens. But by then staff and farmers will be playing a game of catch up for NPR news. I'm Amy mayor in Moines. "There are countries out there were people, speak English. But not like us. We have our own languages hidden in our carry on luggage in our cause medic bags only ever using English when we travel, and then only in foreign countries to foreign people, it's hard to imagine. But English as their real language oftentimes, they're only language. They don't have anything to fall back on to turn to and moments of doubt. How lost they must feel in the world. Where all instructions all the lyrics of all the stupidest possible songs all the menus all the excruciating pamphlets, and brochures, even the buttons. And the elevator are in their private language. They may be understood by anyone at any moment whenever they open their mouths. They must have to write things down on special codes wherever they are people have unlimited access to them. They are accessible to everyone and everything I heard there are plans in the works to get them. Some little language of their own one of those dead ones. No one else is using anyway, just so that for once they can have something just for themselves. So that yeah. Go ahead. So so the book consist from such a small texts some of them.
