Street Photography in New York City, with Gerard Exupery

"Back to another episode of this week and photo. I'm your host frederik van johnson today on the show got gerard exupery. He's a veteran new york city based street photographer. That knows more about street photography than than or has forgotten more about it than i probably will ever know about street photography. We're gonna dive into that a little bit as well as what. It's like shooting in and around new york city now and before pandemic all that stuff going to talk about gear all this stuff so gerard. Welcome to the show man. How's it going very well. Glad to be here. Yeah it is good to hear man. I'm excited to chat. So we've got you know. The the john mara of photography. And then this genre of let's call it of photojournalism or that that world of shooting. What's the difference. What's the difference between street photography. And that i think that in journey with photo journalism you tend to think in terms of projects. Not just one image. You know a a series of images that tell a complete story and i think with straight photography. is generally just one image. Okay okay has got to tell the story one at a time. So let let's rewind back to the time to. Let's let's do origin story thing so cue. The flashback so the origin story of girard. Where what was that moment where you knew that. Okay i feel like. I need to be taking pictures of this. This amazing city. I live in well on my planet. We didn't really have photography. And when i came to earth. And i'm sorry all right more and you know it's funny. It's the only thing i've ever wanted to do since As far back as i can remember one of my earliest memories of my father staying his role affleck's in my hand. While i took the first picture took and which was a ship underneath the verrazano bridge and it just stuck in my mind. He passed away about a year after that. And you know. I it just all these feelings about photography and loss. Let's say i don't know all came together. And i just knew that this is the direction i wanted to go. Yeah yeah and it's a good direction. It's the world photography from my standpoint on of you agree with this but it's it's equal parts. Geeky ray is we like the technology and all that stuff and then it psychology you when you're dealing with the public and trying to get the right shot or get the shot or permission to do the shot and the you know the all of this stuff in between psychology science physics wrapped up into the time machine that we call a camera to fast forward to now the president or the recent the recent present. Let's call it like this last this past five five or so years me decade your adventures in and around new york city. The i can't imagine being a street photographer. There for just an extended period of time when i'm there is overload. It's just like what. Do i take pictures of two months. It's too much going on you get analysis paralysis. What would have been some of the standout experiences you've had in city over the past decade or so that you like okay. I got to tell this bar story. Wow pick were got to pick one. I think defining Well this is. It's further back than ten years but sure for for the finding event was i was involved in a robbery and a camera store. And it's a long story but rather traumatic thing. Somebody was killed and and i got roughed up a little bit and it was it was. It wasn't pleasant. But it was. After that i i realized well putting yourself out there making yourself vulnerable and taking pictures strangers asking or you know. I don't think covertly taking pictures of people is for me. It's just not right so if you're going to ask or you're just going to be obvious bat it you've got to put yourself out and up until that point I didn't know what i was expecting to happen but After that i figured well. What's the worst that can happen. I already found out what the worst that can happen. And it really It helped me in. Maybe be taught me to be very aware of my surroundings almost in a comfortable way though. So that okay. Let's not ever forget. I've gone into situations where drug dealers on a corner. And i was taking a picture of this house that was closed and abandoned actually in patterson not beard city paterson new jersey which is really exciting. We've got a water tower waterfall. There you go and a crappy movie was made by. Jim jarmusch bad it. It lasts two years ago and any case so i am standing there taking pictures and You know. I hear this guy walking up to me and it was interesting because there were like three. Get two or three guys on each corner but not the corner i was on the house was and i'm i'm taking pictures and i hit. This guy comes up behind the camera up to my eye. And i can hear him. I'm aware of him and he said. Hey what are you doing. I told them flat out. I'm taking pictures of buildings that have been foreclosed on You know and properties that have been abandoned families that have gone kicked out. And what have you. And he goes off and you know then he goes How much do you think they want that house i should. Oh i don't know but whatever it is going to be pretty cheap

Mike needs to go back but he doesn't have enough air and there's not enough time to go out in the mind for another tank. What can they do. Just an mike spots a welding torch where there's a torch there's oxygen tank has the same valve as regulator. What luck but mike need some tools to complete the rig now. He needs to go back down underwater To retrieve a toolbox he does and hooks up his regulator and carries the o. Two tank with them as he heads back breathing welding oxygen. Mike reaches the air pocket and finds the second minor limp. But not dead. He gives him the regulator and the minor starts to revive. He tells. Mikey sorry that he was scared. Mike says that's okay. You just didn't have enough oxygen this time. Mike says that things went a lot better than they made it out. We never did get the name of that panic minor nor did we ever find out what might charge mr graham for those of us of a certain age or watch a lot of old time television. You might recognize bill henderson. That's hank patterson who played fragile. Arnold the pigs. One thing seems pretty clear here in many parts of New York City will be six more weeks of shoveling. Snow really has piled up. The issue, of course, is always where do we stack the snow on these busy streets of New York City like hearing 30th Avenue in a story? That's where young entrepreneurs come in, like These 3 17 year olds I caught up with this morning. Great combination of shovels, snowblowers and desire to make some cash. I was watching you out here. Butterflies Are Secret Monsters

"On today's show butterflies. That seemed to be sucking on eyeballs. We had about it at wanted to tell you all about it. This all started the other day when i hopped on the phone with chandra maitra. She's an assistant professor of biology at north central college in illinois and. John told me that she'd seen these pictures where it looked like butterflies were feeding on the eyes of the animals. Animals like turtles. You usually see them sort of like mobbing turtles head. And it's like poor turtle looking at right now 'cause it's really getting mobbed by the butterflies. Those pictures as wow. This is incredible. And i was like why. Why are they going to be is well. We think it's the tears right. Coming from the is wait. So they're like sucking the tears from the turtle. Uh-huh studies have found that butterflies want to all these tears for one main reason. They're full of salt and butterflies. Need that salt help in nerves and muscles work on applies also slip up salt for mud puddles which is why he's known as paddling. It's called puzzling because quite often. If you're out on a hike you'll see butterflies landed around water bodies around puddles and they seem to be drinking something in the mud so butterflies on actually sucking on eyeballs slapping up tears to get salt but this mystery and has another twist when you take a close look at who shows up around the watering hall. It's kind of a sausage fest it's mostly the blokes doing all these paddling. And chandra on did why. Why are the males. Mostly scrounging around the salt. She figured that maybe this is about butterfly. Bunking it's all for the nookie detest this. She got a bunch of male butterflies specifically pipeline swallow tales. This absolutely gorgeous blue and black butterfly with these beautiful tales. They look dull when you see them in the shade but then they move into the sun and suddenly they flash. These crazy bright colors. She took these sexy pot vines. Swallowtail dudes and use them to find out if she was right it having salt up the game so she some mail butterflies salts and gave up his just wash up in a cage that some females and then watched with it with a nurse patterson exactly for awhile. My twitter handle was a voyeur. After watching more than one hundred butterfly bunking sessions. She ran the numbers and what we found was had sold actually made more frequently than males who were given water so it looks like salt was affecting They're they're how lucky baker yes exactly and what's particularly call isn't shandra even noticed that the male butterflies seemed to be showing off the fact that they had salt through the way that they flooded so in this species the the courtroom is really beautiful so the male flies around the female he basically making these vertical swoops around the female. If you're a human female walking and does a male sort of running in circles around you look beautiful. I am locale beautiful. Scrubbing through video. Recordings of these butterflies circles. Shandra that the salty fellas had the fancy footwork. Oh wing work. These little magic. Mike's took longer and more showy swoops. It was like in butterfly language. They were saying look. I have sold. Because i can fly in this way out of the researchers found that after all these dancing during the old rump. Bumpy the male injects the female a little package of salt and spam which she can then pass on to her future. Babies perhaps helping them survive so next time a photo swarms around the internet of a butterfly seeming to suck and able out of a turtle. You'll know that they're doing it for a pretty good cause to make more butterfly babies and by the way some butterflies will go to even more desperate measures to get this salt. They'll suck it. Who or dead animals. I know that there is one species of butterflies. That i that i've read about. That will drink a blood. There they're weird weird little creatures we imagine them with like rainbows and unicorns together. The butterflies are drinking tears and blood and poop that signs fasces will be back with regular episodes in much. And you wanna see what we're up to. In the meantime you can follow us on instagram. Where it science underscore. Vs on twitter at science. B s this episode was produced by nick dell rose with help from the scientists as tame. Peter leonard is out sound engineer. How worried should we be about the two Sydney mystery cases?

"I've not suddenly those cases in new south wales again so we heard yesterday. That man who works at the sydney airport has tested positive coronavirus. And this is someone who shuttles drives the shuttle bus that takes aircrews from international flights to and from the airport and he got caught. And it's good but it's not a massive surprise but then a really big surprises that have popped out of the blue to people from sydney's northern beaches have also tested positive for covid and it doesn't seem to be any links to nine cases so far which is a lot more of a worry. So how worried should we be that. There's been circulating under the right eye in sydney for some time. Well if indeed. That's the case. I mean it's possible that it's been there. Circulating popped up. Let's start with the driver. Apparently he's been very cooperative and the the owners of the company who are who do the transportation of these aircrews been cooperative as well. Apparently there's been mask wearing but it's not entirely clear by the way we when we were talking about this on this episode of the krona. We don't have all the information. So more information may marriage by the time you listen to this corona cast. But certainly it's unclear. And i think that what's going on there. Is that the minister brad. Hazzard in his press conference yesterday alluded to this that. Probably the rules for aircrews are not as tight as they are for people arriving from overseas strange returning coming from overseas into weeks of hotel quarantine and maybe the testing of people come in contact with them is not as regular as it should be. I suspect that there's the there's a chink in the armor when it comes to us because we had that lady a couple of weeks ago who got infected almost certainly from aircrew. That's at least what the genomics of the virus tells you so there is a problem there. Wales is taking more than its fair share of the burden of people commute from overseas so your stress system but nonetheless that needs to be tightened up. Now you've got these. Two people are older people in the who apparently have close contact with each other in the northern beaches of sydney. And it's not clear who they've had contact with. It's just a little bit of coincidence. So the guy who's driving the boss apparently got symptoms on saturday. So that's a few days before he got tested and he can be infectious for a few days before that who knows what social networks that patterson was in. I wouldn't be surprised if the contact tracers find that there is a circuitous connection between these two cases. But you know you never know you. You've got no idea what's going on here and it could be just a surprise. There's been virus under the surface and it's popped up. It's just a bit of a coincidence that it's in the same week that this happens with these mystery cases. Norman how worried should we. Do you think it's going to turn out that. They just linked. I think we should be worried. We should be worried that there's a chink in the armor with overseas aircrews and we should be worried that these cases pop up very worried. But i'm sure that the contact tracers new south wales right onto it and really trying to track this down in the low ready doing to try and find out how to actually wear. These viruses came from and has been some innovations in australia genomics. Where in fact they can short circuit that you know makes wait two or three days. So let's see what happens there. So it's not huge panic yet but if you start to get other cases popping up when they do mass testing in the northern beaches then you start to get worried. Hopefully they can track this down

Is it safe to put kids back in classrooms? Washington DC Auditor issues report

"Is still working to bring Mork kids back to the classroom. And now there's a new report focusing on whether the science supports doing that. The report from the office of the D C auditor looked at closing classrooms as a pandemic mitigator so that our council members can be as well informed as possible. Kathleen Patterson is the district's auditor. And, she says, because school shutdowns coincided with other shutdowns in the spring, it's hard to come up with the defense. Of answer. What is possible is to weigh the benefits and risks of what is known about the impacts of school closure policies to assess what risks a community is willing to undertake, the report says. Those assessments need to be guided by what drives community transmission. Other mitigating factors put in place in the weighing of the risks and benefits of in person schooling. John Doman w T. "And i didn't you know couldn't tweet couldn't talk mean vinson i'll we would all would avoid the subject loan. Just tell stories. Some of those told today just sad. That won't have anymore. But i'm thankful grateful for for the years that i i gotta spend and be with him into anybody. That's a fan of this business. You'll never know the contributions that man made this business over the last fifty years And fifty years from now when somebody says a grab a quick one. That's patterson quick one somebody else says apple case as patterson when you're talking about the hundredth royal rumble wouldn't be if that one patterson and we talk about or the grace workers grace minds of this business. You're still going to be talking about pat patterson and the single best finish man in the business. That's pat patterson touched so many people's lives. You don't even know it and that's all that is it's a tweet couldn't i couldn't find the words could and wanna call to say just because i had to get it out and i in my way of dealing in there so much more fuck we. We haven't even done a deep dive now and we will. I mean i think we made the right 'cau- i'm i'm so proud to be a part of the show and to pay ona's to your great friend and it's it's weird because there's so many tentacles to all of this. I think sometimes we fans just think it's yeah it happens when we turn the tv on and then we turn the tv off. It's over but of course i'm friends with your wife. Stephanie on facebook. When all this happened she posted a lot of family. Candid photos through the years of you. Guys and the kids in patent louis and for the first time i texas you a couple of days ago said i just watched path hall of fame speech for the very first time i never saw and obviously the company was in a different place back then but to just see pat be so proud to receive that award and you could see the affection he had prevents when he thanked me nine for what he had done for wrestling and he said in whatever your was in the mid nineties can you imagine wrestling being any bigger than this but he's gonna find a way. Thank you for that but mostly thank you for being my friend and you see the smile. Come across vince face. And you know think that's fences mom seated to his left. This is a family thing. And it's so wild the see that and then at the end again. This is the mid nineties a different time. He said i'm going to do this for the very first time. I wanna thank a very special god my life a very dear friend and a companion and he thanked louis that he was gonna share this award with him. What a fucking touching moment man. Because you know this sounds silly. Now in the context of twenty twenty but back then that was a big deal and he was such an innovator in a trail blazer so brave and so such a creative genius and so giving and yeah. It's it's immeasurable. The impact he had not only on the wf not only professional wrestling but the world people and we lost a great one. And there's no way that we can do a show like this and really tell that story in a couple of hours so we're going to do another deep dive on on pat some other time as a set of forty six pages of notes. I'm rip roar and ready to go. But bruce just wanted today. You know give you a chance to not talk about what he did but to talk about how we made you feel. Because that's really the memory for the people who knew him the most. It's not the inventor of the royal rumble. It's not the first intercontinental champion. It's you know hanging a noose with hulk hogan and he and all around the car and game making up the steak sauce and taking the time with a a young brash. Cocky thinks he's got figured out office guy and saying. Hey now let me teach you about life. He was all of that to everyone and to hear it from your perspective. I don't think we could've done anymore. Justice today so thank you for being open and honest and vulnerable and real and at paterson will be sorely missed spa lot of people he will and thank you all for listening giving a shit enough to lists and is is the guy that so many ways just made it all happen and for me personally kept my happiest together and God speed love you bat and you are missed. We'll be back next week with another episode of something wrestle. He's at british. Richard i am. Hey it's conrad and none of that matters. That patterson seventy nine get that shit. I'm pretty good. Been say about that. Well so good. Arash lack out wrestling wrestling to wrestle with bruce pritchard. As conrad thompson. And you're listening to something to wrestle with. Bruce prichard bruce. What's going on man. How are you will county Got a question for you did you. know who was talking about you the other day I don't know Charlotte no body was talking about you the other day. So pat patterson he'd get you with least once or twice month course celebrating the life of pat patterson We lost him tragically earlier this week. In we're recording on saturday december fifth on the heels of a very special smackdown that pay no more is the pat and I know inex- t was was. Technically the i w show after paths passing but last night was your first wrestling show with the company without paterson on the earth here with us and i know you guys were best friends for so long. I mean jim cornet jokes on his podcast that you guys were tasked with hip so much that it became one name of burson. Pap wasn't wasn't bruce. Richard and pat patterson it was person pat. And you know these days. Of course he'd gotten a little older passed away earlier this week at the age of seventy nine and it was slowing down a little bit and he wasn't running as wide open as maybe schedule. You keep these days and while that may have changed The love you guys shared for each other had not and When i got the news. And i called you. I could tell just by the way you answer the phone that you already knew pretty tough week this week. Yeah it was Yeah yeah ensures that was. It was a little crazy. I got a call bright and early in the morning whatever day that was and just pretty much facts type thing but it was Shock shocking you can prepare for those things All you want. But it's still when it hits you and the reality of it comes in the you. I don't know i just i. I pretty much sat silenced. Longest time and you try to rationalize it you dream in and try to rationalize it's not true but It was a fact. And we lost one of my best friends and mentors of my entire life that Last three three years did out me so much. Just unselfishly talk me into the time with me. And and along the way just we had had a shitload of fund as well so it was a it was a little rough. Well let's Spend right the top that normally we may do a deep dive bio on a talent like this we would come with A lotta facts on a lot of details about their whole life and we're still going to do that some day. I'm pat patterson But that day won't be today today. We're just gonna let bruce tell some stories and sort of speak from the heart. I forty six pages notes ready to go. I'm pat patterson when we do the full profile show. But i thought today on the heels of all of this news being so fresh maybe what would be best would be if we just sorta let you tell your story so tell us about the first time you got to meet pat patterson well the first time that i met pat officially was in one thousand nine hundred. Eighty seven shortly after wrestlemainia. The office in houston. Paul bashes wrestling office which was partially owned by bill watson. Midsouth time we had watts had sold his territory. The wf to Jim crockett promotions and paul boston. Wannabe be any of that. Paul didn't didn't like jim. Crockett and our say didn't like him. Didn't know jim crockett. But are that way. Didn't know jim crockett but knew enough about him. That he knew he did not wish to do business with him. Paul who's willing to open up and try but his his phone calls and attempts to get a hold of crockett when unanswered. So calzone friend. Jim barnett meeting was arranged for pat. Thence jim barnett. Jump on a plane to come to houston to meet with paul. That was the first time On that day that i actually ever met pat shook his hand and talk to him for a few seconds but You know through the years you hear an awful lot of things about people. I remember the first time that ever saw pat in that was in What amarillo is no paso. Texas seen him on tv and pat do character. Lord patrick patterson. Ken's past english wasn't good so pat would cut these promos from a lawn chairs of. Hey all you farmers out there in texas and he would just do it through his thick french canadian accent trying to be british and it was the drizzling fucking shits but god damn man would pat got in the ring and turned it on. No one could touch. his work. Saw pat. I is a very you know. Young kid Watching wrestling just being a fan of wrestling then he came and Think he did one or two shots. Maybe in houston for paul. Bosch with ray. Stevens is his partner and holy shit. They were just explain it because their work was just that good. You knew it. You knew it when you watch them. This was something special that these guys are the best there was ray. Stevens has been noted by ric flair as being his favorite wrestler growing up. And i think a lot of our younger listeners may not realize that before. Pat patterson was the first intercontinental champion from that prestigious tournament. Down rio de janeiro he was arguably one half of the greatest tag team of all time and not a ton of footage out there of that tag team but folks who actually got to live it and see it said it was unlike anything else and.

"Because i want someone to learn something in the business to learn something about the business. He'll you i watch. I watched many of your matches. You had a mean streak many heels And i got a chance through your book. I always remember lord alfred hayes from doing commentary on wwf. I didn't know that that guy even worked. So i got on youtube and he was a nasty hill and he made you mad because he cheated and then when it came time to get heat on you he was a mean prick. Yeah explain the importance of mainstream bat because to me. It's so simple me as far as being mean yes. You don't just go through the motions this with no you gotta take pleasure passionate fucking jackley when you throw a punch your facial expression you mean it. You just don't do it for fun right when you grab that leg and you twist it. Yeah you got to show me that you know. That's the whole thing. The facial expression is so important. So you're working with silvio samson montreal. How long are we there before you would end up going down to tony. Santos in boston right montreal. I wrestled with the kid bit and then from there. I add a chance to go about. The promoter from boston would come in sometime to montreal and looking for talent you know so i go to him and said you do promote that you Me go boston. Goldman gives me his car late. You try to tell me out. You know what i mean but i kept that card for five six months later. That's what my dad. Throw me out of the house and my sister. She gave me twenty bucks in those days. It was a lot of money. I took a reality bus went to boston. You gotta go through immigration. I had that thing in those days. I guess you didn't need a passport. I said me go to boston wrestle. No no no. I was at the border. Six to seven hours the business. Start it calling to promote her. Finally promoter answer or you got a kid hairy that wrestling for you. Yeah yeah yeah so. I went to boston. They went to boston deadly. And you started your wrestling careers. Pat patterson because as a shoot you appear clermont. Yeah so you already pat. Patterson and waiting for you over in boston i i. I changed my name in montreal. Okay oh yeah pierre claremont. Can you imagine a name. Champion the star pierre claremont. Give me a break. Have a religion assay quad to it if i will Tell me how you came up with. The pat patterson because in the book. Okay you know what that was a two local guys. There were lumberjack. One was sh the paul smitten and the other one was back smith to lumberjack. And i liked the name pat smith you know not even named pat so i think a dictionary toback page of the dictionary. They have the What do you call it be. At and now surnamed. I what is it a surname surname. So fat i like pants. And now i didn't know what to call the last one that i took the dictionary and i told my eyes and i opened the first name i saw. Was patterson patterson that was it guttering to it. Been my name for years. What change when you went to boston because you are in boston. What two years about two years. And you know i learned that learned to wrestle to travel all these little towns with different guys. They were the old timers they like to play with you and trying to stretch you but after a while they liked to work with you. Am i taking good bunk right. You know what. I mean they help you know and that was there for two years. I had a blast. Oh my god. I was young. I didn't know i didn't make any money. I was living in an apartment at ten dollars. Ten dollars a week so at this point your life and later on. We're going to get to this. You always feel comfortable when you when you really start understanding the business whether you're working. The healer baby fish yours preferred to lead the match. But i'm imagining when you get to boston. And while you're still in montreal samson's kid maybe you were called on the match. But i'm imagining you're still following at this point correct and learning. Oh yeah. But i learned from them. There were telling me what to do that. Eventually nasa wait a minute my time. I'm gonna teach these guys what to do. you know. I came to that level where they started believing in me. You know what. I mean those days i just wanted to lead and some of these guys are just looking at you. Come on you know. It just felt that way. I bet you the same way to a web. Because i don't hear very good. I was legendary. You know if. I'll never forget working with lawler in memphis. He was a guy that let's start talking before you've been locked up alive. It'd be trying to call the first spot. And i'd be a lot. Well the crowd would call hotspot. Tillerson was ridiculous. i. We're working. Hiller baby once i got a hold of it. That's when i started liking to lead the match. And that's where i felt comfortable worth funny about leading match. You know and that's one thing i had to do. Come on i just. I couldn't let a guy go ahead. Go ahead you lead you going to do something you're gonna kick my ass do something you know. I'm waiting for something now. I'm only the match. I'll tell you what to do. What rocket johnson. I worked with him so many times man. I used to give him shit every night in the ring you lazy bastards. Get your bucket ass up. You know what i mean. That's scream at him because if we have a badge matt because about not because of him. It's this fall. I don't wanna have a bad match right going going back to the those formative years man. I can't imagine there was a lot of high spots. It was a lot of holes working for holds healing and then one or two spots. But it wasn't a spot fast yet. You're right now. Put a hole and make mid the guy suffer you know. Make them tap out years ago. Not too many guys with that. They didn't want to tap out get pinned. It's okay back to that day. Just just of two guys grappling just was an attraction in another self because you know it was it was still that time of course wrestling been around in the states for since before. The tv was around outside. Television comes out. It's it's national tv but and that day that style just captivated people. Oh yeah combatants trying arousal or win a championship belt right and so all these years later the business has evolved so much. Yeah and you. you're right years ago. You grab a hold of the wrestler for twenty minutes. Get out of there and when he does look out. You're right it's true but today you grab over twenty minutes. Yeah hey in boston. And you're out on the town and you meet louis your life partner. Yeah forty years and so you guys become an item and this is back in the day when a business was protected and so y'all protected the business you protected your relationship. Yeah louis and all about. It's a long story. And the way. Because i met him in boston and i would see him on the weekend because he lived outside of boston and he had a motorcycle to come and spend a weekend with me and go. You know a good friend you know. But then in the meantime mad dog is in oregon. He's a star and oregon. And i don't know how he got still don't know today how he got my address in boston. He sends me a letter yearbook in two weeks in oregon. You'd better be here mad. Dogs wants me to oregon. Had no idea where oregon is then. I go to the promoter in boston. I tell them about one or go to oregon. It takes a map. I've never seen him back. That big is going from coast to coast to me. What's going around the world. And he says you could starve to that. That scared me. I didn't go about three weeks later. I got a letter from my dog up walking over here on my god. Now i have to go. I borrowed money from louis. Flew to portland. Get a little apartment. I stayed a hotel mad. Dog was there through a couple of weeks later. I miss my friend. Louise and louis flies in thinking. Hey man when you said goodbye to louis you're just gonna and he was going to go do his thing..

And here's the thing as you know because you've been around for so many years and so many different territories in new york specifically guy comes in with the different agents. You know i was kind of a blackjack lanza guy exactly. I was gonna say that. Yeah he was a guy that kind of handled my match in the book where we're sitting there talking about pets new book. It's called accepted. I read the sing from cover to cover and shit. Let me just backtrack pat. The book is mesmerizing. Live such a hell of a fun live. It had its ups and downs those spots. But it's a very fun book to read. I thought what we try to our conversation given short prep time. I had four sit there and go chapter by chapter and take you through the boat but that would be giving the book away so i just want to pick your brain shoot the shit and just talk about the business and coming up. Well i'll you. What when you first came. I remember that i remember. It was somewhere in san diego or la somewhere and you're not stone cold. You were three master their ringmaster you went out of your mind and i remember you screaming at somebody and all that stuff. I don't know what's gonna happen. You hated that fucking name did you. Do they call me up. Vince call me. And i was in atlanta. Just gotten let go out of busted arm and he had been working for issue w thank- thankfully all heyman call me. And i got a chance to learn how to do a promo or start the learning process. So when vince the ringmaster. I'm thinking to myself. This is dumb shit a world but it's my foot in the door because bad we'll go over this conversation two times. Vince had talked to me. But i knew he only wanted to bring me in as a mechanic this time. He was at least pitching me. A gimmick it was a bad gimmick. Right it was a foot in the door and the promoter wanted me. It wasn't me wanting to go. Because i had to which was a case but as you know you don't have to make that phone call these days so no. I didn't like that giving it all because want to go to war you with all due respect to ted diaz. Who was my manager. And i go on youtube. But i'll watch an old match with you. Work with ted tremendous. You know as good as ted was. I just learned to start talking so he was. He was a henry inch. And i say that with respect because he's one of the greatest workers that i ever sell. I see that was a dead end points out the whole time that i was here in w microwave. You help me out many many times. But i wasn't in your click. You you were rocks guy you. You're everybody's guy well okay on your different main guys. I remember a few times which you know and first of all talk about. Don't go boston austin. You had a character that was strong as it could be. And you're a pro. And i remember a lot of times what you were the card. You are watching backstage watching the matches you wanna see who is doing what you know because you don't want to do the same thing and occasionally sometime when you knew what you had to match and you would say that but of fucking shit. Is that guy. Got dammit enough steve. I'm down maybe you can come up with something better utilize and why would we would come up with something you know so this way. It's easier than come back this way or that way. Well damn that sounds much better. You know what i mean and after that you're easy to play with you know but we all had to wear all the way we have a new character it. Something is not working. You know what i mean and then somebody some zoo. What about this way. Oh okay you know but did you get this sense that i had a bad attitude. No don't because someone's going to hear dealings on myself. I was a little artery. But i mean i was so hungry. I've been fucked around for seven and a half years. You're paranoid show my shoulder yet. You paranoid about that. Then all of a sudden you hear something and you get really upset. Is anybody that anybody else. Go to you and says well you know. Come down cow. now i'm gonna go sandwich the Catering and you've been hour from now. We'll sit down and talk. You know some guys get mad and they don't wanna do this okay. Give me some ideas of. I love that i love that. Sean michael these guys. I just love to help somebody that because we all get stuck. We all need to be produce. That's what you say over and over and the book and go. Let's let's go back to when you were a kid growing up and montreal and do there was an eleven family members in your house was a condo and apartment. It was an apartment. It was an apartment with two bedrooms. Do better people and no running water running water cold water no water because you had to heat it up in kitchen on the stove. Yeah then would have the bath houses down the street. Yeah and you end up in the house. Two bedroom kitchen but there was one toilet. Yeah no bathroom. No shower yet. The way the line to go to the bathroom and then when you took a shower or your mom would give you a sliver of soap and you go down to the public bath house and then she would ask you for the sliver soap when you got back. Oh yeah you have to so nothing was ever handed to you. Know pat as a kid and reading a book. you're always looking for an audience. Yes why was that. I mean i don't know you don't one of my brothers. He was about two years younger than the e was good at playing hockey. It wasn't me. I don't know what it is and i was a kid i was an altar boy am would decrease..

We just got to come out. Keep fighting. Like I say, offense. We're not playing good enough. You know, everybody see it, everybody, No offense. We just got to do better, You know? "Well commuting while jamie stayed trapped underneath his bed. The liquor store owner opens up the application and gives me some details. Els patterson included on his resume pederson wrote. I'm an honest and hardworking guy not much work experience but i show up to work and i'm a quick learner that statement calling himself honest in a hardworking guy doesn't add up because on his resume patterson lies. He writes that he was in marine boot camp from from april to december two thousand seventeen. We've already confirmed that he was kicked out of the marines. After five weeks. In paterson writes that he worked at a wisconsin concrete company through november knbr twenty eighteen but we already know he was unemployed at the time of the murders and kidnapping in october in fact after we post this update online a manager at the concrete company calls us to say patterson never worked there at all he just filled out an application <hes> <music> when you find out someone is accused of committing an act of pure evil you almost expect to find there were warning signs like torturing animals are sent mm-hmm childhood abuse the kinds of things you read about in here about but with jake paterson. We can't find any of those things patterson's peers. Tell us he he was. Just a normal kid in high school didn't really care for class and in fact he's quoted in the yearbook saying i'm finally done with school. His yearbook shows he was on the quiz bowl team but he didn't play any sports and didn't appear to be active in any other activities he graduated class of thirty four and was voted as the most quiet boy in the class of two thousand fifteen fifteen pederson grew up in the home where he kept jamie. He has an older brother and sister. His parents divorced in two thousand seven. Maybe it'd it'd be easier to wrap our minds around everything. If everyone always suspected jake paterson was a monster but we find none of that in his ordinariness creates an unsettling feeling of its own when i heard the news i was extremely shocked to hear that jake would do something like that because he's just seems like your average eighteen you know growing up there was nothing different than him than any other child and the neighborhood on the next eight days as they have not indicated how patterson will plead when the arraignment happens on march twenty seven in upcoming plea amid fears the case will drag on so what are the the odds that he rolls in there in pleads guilty all comes to an in my opinion zero but then patterson writes a letter that letter arrived at care eleven for our blue goose this warning from the polk county jail inmate jake patterson and the letter's contents shake up the case this this is eight hundred eight days the jamie class story a care eleven original podcast in association with volt studios checkout eight days podcast dot com for more information on jamie class case eight days has written and produced by me lou reduce in l._a. "Steve is on his second and last day of work at suppo- cheese patterson says he bought a black face mask from walmart to hide his identity when he executed his plan pederson says has he stopped halfway between baron and gordon install license plates off a vehicle parked in someone's yard to put on his own car when he carried out the crimes to help disguise his identity eh he disconnected the dome light so he could enter and exit his vehicle and darkness and he also removed the trunk light and the glow in the dark emergency release in the trunk with patterson refers to as the kidnapping cord so no one could open the trunk once inside before leaving his house. Patterson says he took took his father's twelve gauge mossberg pump shotgun with six slugs now if you're not familiar with guns a slug is much bigger than a bullet that a rifle would fire and even though it's not as accurate from far away a slug does a lot more damage patterson tells investigators he knew that and also that he researched in learn that the mossberg osberg branch shotgun was one of the most heavily manufactured in could be harder to trace in order to make sure he would leave no fingerprints or dna patterson says he put on gloves in wipe down the shotgun and six shells before loading it he shaved his face and all the hair off his head and showered before leaving his house so we wouldn't leave any d._n._a. The anna or hair at the crime scene pederson says he drove to the class home twice before october fifteenth in hopes of taking the girl he saw getting on the bus. The first came a week and a half earlier but when he got there he says there are all kinds of cars in the driveway and it scared him off a day or two later. Pederson says he tried again and but he had second thoughts when he saw the lights were on and people were walking around the house on october. Fifteenth patterson says he coasted into the end of the class driveway with his headlights off and parked he quietly got out of the car wearing a black face mask and jacket bluejeans brown steel toe work boots and two pairs have gloves as he walked up the sidewalk to the front door of the class home. Pederson says he noticed gym class standing in the large picture window to the left of the front door shining a flashlight outside patterson says he hollered for jim to get on the ground but jim kept shining the flashlight and looking outside patterson says he opened the glass storm door pounded on the wooden front door. Jim look through the small glass window on the door and said show me your badge. Apparently thinking patterson was the police patterson then says he raised his shotgun and shot him in the head through the window on the door and he heard him collapsed to the ground after trying to break down the door. Patterson says he fired a second shot this time at the doorknob and he was able to get inside. He says he saw jim was dead and and stepped over his body. After quickly scanning the house. Patterson approached the closed door the bathroom it was locked locked and barricaded patterson says he hit the door with his shoulder ten to fifteen times before it burst open. Patterson says he ripped off the shower curtain. In in the bathtub found denise close with her arms wrapped around jamie in a bear hug patterson pulled out black duct tape and told denise to put it over jamie's as mouth patterson tells investigators denise was struggling to do it so he set the shotgun on the bathroom. Sink took the tape from denise in rapid around around jamie's mouth and completely around her head then stood jamie up and taped her wrists and ankles and pulled out of the bathtub with jamie standing bound next to him in the bathroom. Patterson says he picked up the shotgun aimed for denise his head and pulled the trigger as he started to turn away from there patterson says he dragged jamie out of the house nearly slipping on jim's blood that had pulled on the floor. He dragged her across the yard to his car. Pop the trunk open and put her inside. Pederson.

"What's up guys I'm C. Patterson into my left while while international television sensation broadcasting but he met Ryan perpetual D. J. by the way just to show you how in his own feelings Ryan is right now I just got a call during the break and I picked it up as Ryan Mar jock she said Hey I have you guys ever talked about that since Steve appeared on live with Kelly and Ryan Ryan Seacrest has been doing his hair more like Steve's as I discussed it anyway that Ryan Perpich doesn't know what's happening on that phone call and I said well you know of course is my best friend in the world a blood brother blah blah blah and then I continue on you these are acting more likely to those above and this one saying all the settings and Ryan is just signed sealed delivered it's a phone call about me my best friend so I had to you know presumably is talk about me is so the call must have been confused sure shot gotcha I could talk I Hey are you guys ready for another little mermaid can I just say that the little mermaid news is now at the point we have jumped the shark I feel that it's very confusing there's a lot of projects right there's a live action little mermaid coming television but it's another yeah so this is a little bit trickier The Hollywood Reporter says that a Louis krav all hell also known as the voice of Moana will play area on a live concert production aware on A. B. C. November fifth to join the queen the teeth as Ursula and shaggy as Sebastian but this is different than the Leah Machel little mermaid now which is like a is a how is another stage production but this is like a live TV production that fox has done some of NBC has done some of a now ABC will dip their toe into it I am seeing a picture of the set so looks great so we have TV and we have stage right now and then we also have a movie okay but wait yup there's more there's gonna be a live concert yes so this is the one which shaggy and Queen Latifah man there Milken S. aren't okay no no no that's the one that I just said that is the same thing that's the ABC one so that's a concert that's not alive it's a live concert it's not a is it a like a lot like like NBC did gone with the wind with Carrie Underwood I think it's like that that could be this is this is what it says on in it in addition to the live action remake they're also doing a live concert on A. B. C. that's going to incorporate songs from both the original movie and the Broadway version we'll we'll be voiced by I don't even think I should attempt to pronounce the dollars and poly krav all great shot he just said that and I didn't realize that how you spell it who again is Mauna Queen Latifah like you said as Ursula and then shaggy on now while it's just a live performance Lima shell came out at the Grammys I think it was or no meat is American idol I forget where but she came out and she is the voice of Ariel in some other stage production meanwhile there's also a movie that is currently in the works a live action live animated remake and highly Bailey not bury that's right playing area Melissa McCarthy in talks to play Ursula tax rate okay Jacob Tremblay inclined to avoid flounder and Aquafina set to voice scuttle cute she was destined for that in the article read this will mark ABC's first foray into the live musical genre NBC pioneered the modern format with its popular sun music special back in twenty thirteen continuing with success like hairspray the ways Jesus Christ Superstar among other so it will be essentially a Broadway performance live okay on it makes sense on I've never seen it any of it I haven't either start to finish so really yeah yeah I got to the door of all to play under the sea real quick you've never seen it either right not start to finish now all right chop chop let's get some under the seat I don't know what it's about I don't know anything about and freeze chop shop owner with that means was second yeah maybe that's not wow what a good correct okay stop deflecting from the.
