"They did play in week ten back in 2020, the dolphins won that game 29 21. And when you look at this draft class in its totality, beyond just the two that will be on full display between tua and Justin Herbert on Sunday Night, obviously tremendous years being put forth by Joe burrow and Jalen hurts, and I'll be honest, didn't see this coming from Jalen hurts in any capacity. When you try and assess the dolphins off and streak of four straight games scoring 30 plus points snapped, they do average 6.3 yards per play. Second in the NFL to a turned over three times in the loss of the forty-niners. He had three total turnovers in the previous 9 games. Finish with a completion percentage of 55% or shade under I should say in a sub 80 rating. Miami not quite a 100% offensively. We want to monitor the injury reports to figure out what that offensive line will look like. Jaylen waddle should be out there, but was a shell of himself in the second half. Against the forty-niners last week. But pain right now, this is a charger's defense taking on water. Asante Samuel junior had no answers for devonta Adams, the Chargers weren't able to generate a pass rush against the Raiders. You'd have to think that there is an ample path of four success if Miami is going to get back on the right side of the ledger and try and hang 30 points on their opponent with their second straight game on the West Coast. So there's two matchups for me that will really dictate this game. I think the more glaring one I'll get to first here. And it's actually Justin Herbert's ability to attack the dolphins weak point. You have to be able to throw on Miami. And if you can give your quarterback enough time to do that, there's going to be plenty to be had against the dolphins second there. I mean, just kind of look through things, whether it's injury wise, whether it's metrically, Byron Jones is still out. Brandon Jones out with the ACL. Nick Needham out with the Achilles Xavier Howard, who we've talked about is being a little bit overrated because he's just a highlight real ball hawk, but currently cornerback 84 out of a 128 qualifiers and coverage great. But to do what you need to do against Miami's vulnerability, you have to be able to protect and that's something to your point that the Chargers weren't able to do last week. And I think when I was looking at some of the numbers, Herbert was pressured on 43% of his drop backs against the Raiders. Now, you look at what the dolphins are doing. Bradley Chubb now that he's acclimated to the dolphin scheme. Last three games, Miami's pressure rate on opposing quarterbacks is just soaring 42%. The one thing that we're going to have to monitor here is the injury report for starting right tackle Trey pipkins and starting center Corey linsley who both missed last week against the Raiders, but both are considered day to day. If those two miss, that means the Chargers are down both tackles, their center, not good. But I think there's some optimism that both are going to play. The other part of Miami's past defense sets a mess for what feels like a decade now, is they can't defend tight ends or running backs. Gerald effort is coming off his best game of the season last week. Miami's allowed the second most receptions per game to tight ends for the most touchdowns, Miami's also bottom ten in the league defending running back passes. So that's where you can get Austin Eckler involved. I think there's at least an offensive path where if you can get two guys healthy on your own line and create some level of protection for Justin Herbert. There's going to be some opportunities down the field. There's going to be some opportunities forever and at color as well. The second matchup advantage is actually on the other side of the ball.

"And then you think about some of the injuries you mentioned, Eliza Mitchell's heard again, CMC was seen on the sidelines dealing with a knee injury, didn't look completely healthy. Debo has been in and out of the lineup as he deals with this quad injury and Jimmy G took a weird hit. On his knee and kind of hobbled around late in that game. For me. But the one thing that's interesting about that. Forty-niners were pretty quick to point that out. So I do wonder if he wore a brace during the portion of practice that the media didn't have access to. On a Wednesday, he's thrown in boxer shorts, basically. Everybody looks good throwing in short, but I'm sorry. For me, the path here is you want to attack Miami through there. And it wouldn't shock me in the least that Kyle Shanahan smartly just says, hey, I'm going to come out here. And I'm going to throw the ball. And that's where Miami's been vulnerable. Injuries have hit the secondary Byron Jones hasn't returned Brandon Jones has the ACL, Nick Needham towards Achilles, xavien Howard isn't the guy mainstream media portrays him to be in terms of true coverage skills. Certainly a ball hawk. He's a magnet for the ball. We saw this past week where the ball just found him and he walked it into an end zone after a fumble. But all told the dolphins are 25th in schedule adjusted past defense. And where they really struggle and have for what feels like a decade now is defending tight ends. This has to be a George kittle game. We can't just make him an inline blocker, even though he's great doing that. We gotta target George kittle in this game. Miami's bottom three in the league in terms of receptions and touchdowns allowed to the tight end position 31st and catches aloud to tight ends per game. You want to throw it on Miami. Here's another thing that's kind of interesting to me. It's possibly not the best thing for the forty-niners, right? We saw last week stylistically against the saints. That the best approach is you want to play man coverage against the forty-niners. And I think that will sound crazy to some when you think about the weapons right debo, why you kiddo. But if you really break down the tape and you talk to all the guys that do and mesh it with the data, depot and IU aren't the best creating separation against man coverage. And Jimmy G is far better finding holes against zone. If you look at Jimmy G's EPA against zone and two ice shell, he's a top three quarterback. Against man coverage, Jimmy's EPA dips slightly to average below average. The dolphins play ridiculous amount of man. So that's something to consider here as well. This game for me were a lot of off the cuff random thoughts and you and I have talked about this total and it's one of the more fun games of the week. From what I've seen and heard, even though we've seen a slight tick back downwards once it appeared toron Armstead may try to battle this thing out for the dolphins at left tackle. What I've seen in her is the forty-niners are the side. Let's see where the market heads. The total is just a ball of confusion from this perspective. I think the casual better or even the guy who fancies himself semi sharp. She's the dolphins and forty-niners and thinks about the offensive minds that Shanahan and mcdaniel are and it's below the key of 47. Over. Can't wait. And then you start to think about everything we just talked about, Todd, right? Dolphins offensive line beat up. Dolphins offense, playing a good defense for the first time since the jets, even the Steelers held them in check without TJ watt and the dolphins are probably unlikely to run. You're having these short quick passes and Mike McDaniels knows the forty-niners run game inside and out and the forty-niners weapons are a little bit dinged up and Jimmy G's worse against me and coverage. All of these things make for a quiet contrarian under here. And then you factor in potentially some of the weather. But boy, I'm a little nervous that this could turn into a past funnel game. With neither team able to run, and that's what's kept me off the under to this point. If I know what you know, but you know that I know that you know, you know, what does that mean? Are we all end up in a stalemate in a prisoner's dilemma? And I think those are the kind of things that we love to watch as football fans and when let's look, let's be honest. The NFL hasn't offered that much in the way of intriguing games on paper, leading up to it. We've had plenty of close finishes. We highlighted that on the Monday show, the entertainment value of this league brings. But I think leading up to a game, there's not one that's been more anticipated for you and I over the last couple of weeks than what we're going to see in San Francisco. Knowing that, hey, if things were to break the right way, maybe it is a Super Bowl preview as well. Should Miami be able to navigate through a much more rugged NFC than the road to forty-niners could encounter in the NFC. Speaking of Super Bowl previews, a game that decided the AFC champion last year will be on full display Sunday afternoon with the Kansas City Chiefs. Change in venue, they'll head into Cincinnati to take on the Bengals. You're looking at Kansas City, a modest one and a half point favorite in some shops.

"Life easy for Bailey's app. And they just didn't do it. And this is what you get from an offense. That's led by a former defensive coordinator that wasn't even good doing that. Even if you don't throw on first down and this is revisionist history, they had a successful run on first down. It was second in your immediate. You should have the whole playbook at your disposal to your point if it becomes four down territory or even factors in the equation. Second down, you have the packers in a bit of conflict. They don't know if it's run or pass. You would like to run right into the line and third down intermediate, you know it runs not coming, but we were kind of joking over text. They go, the hell with it. And third down, maybe you run it again, set up fourth and one with a willingness to go. Right. If you're two or three yards away, figuring that if I give Aaron Rodgers and his packers offense, another chance and overtime, the math tells me that it's probably going to be an uphill battle and you saw Rogers convert on not one, but two third downs in that dry before the mason Crosby chip shot field go for the win. That had to be the drive. That was the one. Everything that you did defensively was good enough. Everything you did offensively was just good enough and there you are at the 50 yard line, you need about another 20 yards to get into field goal range. Obviously that's not your goal is to have a 47 yarder. You could have done more with it, but that's perfectly said because once you do run it on second down and you're sitting with third and 5, we don't have to drop back in a standard fashion and hope that it's potentially incomplete and then punt it and pin. That's the point where hell, you could have said, hey, this is going to be four ounce. We can do whatever on this one as well. We can run a screen pass. We can actually run the ball. We can make this a four down game and just nothing was good there in that series. And it was just a lack of balls candidly. That is putting it mildly. Anything else, ugly that you wanted to highlight. I did see you took a shot at your favorite NFL head coach on Thursday at football Zack Taylor. Yeah, he wasn't good. But the situation ended up unfolding pretty nicely where I think anyone could have understood that we know Byron Jones is out. He's on the pup and then when xavien Howard, who we told you was a shell of himself dealing with a groin and hamstring injury finally went out of the game. It was like, hey, maybe Higgins and Jamar chase can dominate cornerback three and four. And I should throw the ball a little bit more rather than hand it off the P right on second and long. And once that lightbulb came on 57 minutes into the game. The Cincinnati Bengals were able to score some points. It provided a novel concept. I wasn't sure where Tyler Boyd was. Maybe he was in witsec for the first half of that game rather than the Bengals trying to exploit the middle of the field. They of course find a little bit of separation, get a win and we'll see the bangles in Sunday Night football again that will preview right here in a massive divisional showdown for the AFC north. Against the Baltimore Ravens. You can follow pain on Twitter that's at pain insider. I'm Todd Furman. You can follow me there as well. Most importantly, as always, follow all things bet the board at bet the board pod and if you haven't already done so, we tweeted it out last week. You go to our website, subscribe to the bet the board newsletter, a friendly reminder of all the great things we're doing throughout the course of football season, articles, additional prop bets, the stay green podcast, everything you've come to expect from the board family. All right, my friend, let's go to look ahead numbers and we can bounce through these pretty quickly. New Orleans Saints. They were a 6 point favorite on a look ahead number. They of course stubbed their toe in England losing 28 25 to the Minnesota Vikings. The Seattle Seahawks get a big win that we talked about at the top outlasting Detroit Lions 48 45. Injuries mounting for New Orleans will have to monitor throughout the course of the week, but 6 down to four across secondary numbers. I think most of its injury, some of its travel situation, but we just have to keep our eyes peeled on some of the injury reports. Is it Michael Thomas? Is he going to be up? Is it Jameis Winston? I thought Andy Dalton played pretty well yesterday, especially against a zone defense. And him and a lava looked like they were on the same page throughout the game. You got the run game going. So I think this is a spot where New Orleans can have some offensive success when you look at some of the guys offensively, you're thinking to yourself anyone who returns is a little bit of a bonus, right? Alvin Kamara was close. So if he gets upgraded, that's a nice boost. Michael Thomas, I don't think was overly close. I don't know if he's going to play or not, but ultimately I think when you look at this game, New Orleans not in a terrible position with what they have offensively when you factor in the opponent here with the Seattle Seahawks defense who just it's one of the worst defenses in the Lake. It's long way to go to get back to legion of boom tech category. That's for sure. Yes, and I mean, again, Detroit went up and down the field yesterday without it's two most dynamic weapons offensively and Omar on saint Brown and swift. Titans, road favorites, game was a pick them for their trip to the nation's capital, take on the commanders. Now we're looking at three. Albeit a soft three at most of the prominent shops. I mean, we thought Titan stock hit rock bottom. We know they were taking a little bit of money against them in their game against the colts, but I guess the commanders were just that much worse that here we are with Mike vrabel's bunch laying a full field goal on the road.

"I mean that bad. Oslo warranted the rare success stories for free he was he was he was he is. The is the jones by we paid. We paid so much for john. Yes you byron jones. Yes here we go second half You know there's lots of cliches. The wheels came off the bus. There you know The train caught on fire in the second half garbage can whatever. The second half was a complete fiasco. Okay i mean it was from giving up a touchdown right there. Eight play seventy five yards. Total dominance and then the rest of the time basically they just cruised. We lost the ball down. So you know again a couple of times. Yeah we can't we went for. We went for it on fourth down three times in this game for thrilled every time. Our offense is an achilles heel. I mean we're we're averaging under nine points a game and the arkell run on fourth and two brown made me want to throw up for two reasons one. I hate the call to begin with to. Isn't brown's kind of tagged or identified as our power back by our coach so he got off tackle And had one person to beat for yards a defensive back and he got if you are a power back. Aren't you running through that guy for at least three yards for a first down there. What else touched him. Only number twenty the defensive back. But i think touched him. I think brought him right down scott right after that that that is not a power back but after that happened later on the game i saw braun run authority really strong and he finally got. What is it didn't matter but the point is maybe somebody says you know what buddy. We didn't bring you here to to be tackled by by some hundred and eighty pound defensive back we brought you in here to be a power back and break through that and he started running like the real men..

"Yes okay. thirty first in pass defense last. I checked they've only thirty two teams. Now maybe they added a t while the sleep last night. Jd we didn't get the memo. But i if i'm not mistaken there still only thirty two teams and the cowboys impasse. Deep is the twenty seven in total defense again. There's only thirty two teams so that tells me there's only five teams worse than them. So you're the bottom of the barrel in pass defense and total defense. But somehow you gotten better. What are they mccarthy. Has he done anything to make you think that he a better coach. The great coach. No that lay great. You know it normally when you make mistakes what he made at the end of the game it gets should be still or fired true so for me. No i don't see it like they've done a great job of taking the ball away and the thing about taking away touchdowns there were a couple of seasons. I had ten touchdowns double double figure touchdown season and it was never like three or four games in a row. Where i got one down. I would have like to two or three games while would have five but i would have a low when i didn't get any and then i'll get three in the next thing you know it's like hey they're bunches and so what they're doing cadillac last year. At the end of the year skip. They got none for such a long time now. All of sudden they started getting some late last year. The saint byron. Joe the play the terry days. May's byron jones knocks the ball down. Trayvon digs interception. Thank you balls on the ground..

"Up muck it up for us. So i have i have the i have the browns instead of the ravens and move the division win. I have the chargers as well. And then i have the dolphins making it over the Yeah right let's do this. Yeah i have a lot. I just have a lot of faith. In what the dolphins are putting together. I do think the pages are gonna turn around. I think they're gonna bounce back quickly. I and i do think that mack jones is a pro. I think these are sort of guy that can step in and be successful exiting offense early. He's that sort of rookie I believe it was nor you had the piece where they talked about. How they're not giving them the full playbook and they're going to bring him in and everything like that. And i just think that that that all that there's going to be great but you can only get a rookie steady so far. You only get him so steady. And i do that. You're going to be inviting some of that ups and downs with jones that i think should be able to indoor in iron out of his game a little better because he did get the starting experience last year which was a large part of why they kind of push to get him out. There is because you want to start to see it and you wanna have a sea legs under him. So i think they're building a really good offense under two. I love what i've seen In terms of what they're doing schematic and the preseason. I do like their collaborative approach. It's a little bit unorthodox. And i think it could go left easily because it's hard to assign blame. But they seem to building out a really nice offense for to a skill set. Obviously kevin when you mean. Stephen had the pot and we all were just like hey that to a preseason game like that's what it's supposed to look like like it is noticeable. What they're doing. Throwing the fact that i think that defense is a thrashing machine. I i think the patriots defense can be and should be as well but the dolphins showed us it last year and then mostly retains talent added a couple of spots as well brooke. Jalen phillips comes along on the edge to me. they're they're deepen their study at all levels. And so i have the dolphins as double digit win. Team There were very close to the wildcard last year. They just need a couple. More wins early in the season to get there and i think they do. How do you think their defense changes that. They don't just how they're even spares changes that they don't have the type of interception look that they had. Because i think they're always going to be defense. That gets a number of picks. It's just that that's not the most stable thing. And i worry that if they hadn't been i in the league in that last year we might think okay. This is a good. This is an emerging defense. I dunno Would have quite the same idea of these guys. Shut people down no one hundred percent right and that that turnovers lie released because they often swing records as one fight very high plays in that way i think that they're not getting again pass breakups. That's sort of player that that xavien howard is on the and byron jones. The opposite sides is the sort of player who discourages targets. They have a really nice synergy. When we talked about the howard extension we talked about how howard calls himself the best corner on the dolphins inappropriately so because of the numbers but also a byron's fits like a glove because byron doesn't let you throw to that receiver. Now got a final targets. For so i do think yeah interception numbers go down but david has always been a play on the ball corner and so i think he's. He's he's proven consistent ball production. Even if it's not ten. I t's defense player of the year level and whatnot and i do think also there is going to get better emmanuel. I will play nicely last year and that was that was a good sign. I think he'll keep doing that do in that in that way but they wanted a lot of kyle no i didn't get it this year that jill philips philips is the fulcrum He's he's he's kind of the key for that defense. The x factor and his stock fell such that they draft him because of some medical concerns and how he handled himself in college but he has had a pro ready body for years and has had a property game for years. so he's got his head on straight. And that's what brian floors does well my opinion To me he's eight saka your rookie. And that's exactly what that means need so phillips is important player for them. Do the cam cam. Newton mack jones thing. Matter at all on your prediction is i. I wouldn't say too much as we talked about after that that That is seen as i wrote about. That decision was made to me like both played well and both could have gone out there and busy successful we this in the green room. A little bit nora. I view the patriots as a team. That's going to beat. The bad teams is gonna have some good game plans. Good teams generally struggled to stay with the top offenses and that would have been true with camera with mac us to me. They're you know they're. I have them as attend win team. I have the dolphins with eleven. So there's one win album. I could easily go another way. If the dolphins drop one against the bills are dropping against patriots. Or whatever. But to me i give the dolphins the slight edge just because i do think they have a little bit more offensive..

"News jazz. Here's the real question. Is the bears offense bad. Or is the miami dolphins defense really booking that good you gotta think about it josh. Chicago didn't record a first down until they were thirty. Seconds left in the first half yeah. That's that's impressive. jake. And i mean. I think it's a little bit of both here again. They're getting some of the kinks out with the bears offense. You know andy. Dalton's andy dalton for being completely honest and my defense i mean. I don't know how you felt jake. But i mean the run defense. Look better we without exhibiting howard. I'm byron jones out there. Nick needham. I mean he played awesome had to pass breakups. I think he was actually a number one. Great player for the dallas sticking at ninety point three. Sorry might get sick. He was a dolphins number one rated player from pro football focus. Nickname was a ninety. So i mean this guy was out there a ball now and defensive player everyone offensive player and you have written here chicane griffin. I mean i posted that playmate and that was so incredible. Seem explode through the line. Almost get to the quarterback get to fields air and then chased him down from behind. Force that ball out so again. That wasn't the first team defense. I think that's what you're asking here. But i do think jake. The dolphins defense is a little bit better than what we expected to see this early on. Yeah josh i. I think i have to agree with you. There christian wilkins. I saw him kind of off the page with a an error early. It just seemed like he missed a tackle but then he made up with it with a blow up. Near the line of scrimmage run play and then he defended pass so that was pretty cool to see our aircrew lockdown at that was also my justed coleman kind of made connect with goofy when he tried to hurdle for some reason. That's certainly what you wanna do. The preseason but yeah just. I think miami's defense good. There's a lot of depth than they're going to be part of more questions so let's keep on keep on keeping on here. That is the big. That is the big thing there. Jake you did say depth. And i mean i think that was what was obviously most impressive to me was just whether it's a defensive. Line linebackers the secondary. I mean depth steps. Step is what this unit has. I'm gonna take number three. I want to read this off. Because i failed the first one so i mean again. Complete tailspin on monday morning Jake number three. Is it time we accept the fact that you wrote this. I don't want to take care of the is it time we accept the fact that it's at least possible that age. Twenty eight and sixth year to keen grants. Best season may becoming. How much does it have to jane. Waddell being in the picture. So jake i mean you mentioned here. We're seeing this all season. Hearing that you grant. I mean for lack of a better word seems like a little bit of a different player. You know he looked explosive out there. I mean that punt that he returned after waddles. I mean water looked explosive man. I mean we're all on the receipt. We were all excited watching him. You know change direction. I we were goosebumps and then he came back and almost did the same thing. I kind of joked are the dolphins gonna run a to punt return system like to kick richard system. I don't know what they're gonna do back there. It's it's definitely a nice problem to have and it was nice to see you know kim grant again. Elevate his game a little bit because you could just see him out. There looked like he was playing a little bit harder after he obviously saw jalen waddell takeoff that big return but as far as receiver. Jake i don't know if this is the year that we see each take off in this receiving core because again it's loaded loaded loaded but every day. A new injury seems to pop up. So your guesses goes my man. What do you think. I think the best opportunity for grant would be if he gets mismatched. Mass you know what. The third or fourth cornerback. Somehow the linebackers on him. That'd be fun to see. It was back down to one thing. Josh matt is his ability to catch the ball. He can do that. I think he will pretty much locked himself up in a spot and the thing i think is so interesting. Here is the competition. And i'm not trying to say you know kim granted at work before. Joe walsh showed up. We saw the videos on instagram. We saw the videos on twitter about how often he's working during the off season but maybe having some out there who can do what jalen model did on that twenty four yard punt return just unlock set a little bit of extra sauce. That might be needed for him to really prove to boras end company that He really deserves a this roster. Despite so many receivers jalen waddell was asked about the offense overall performance today and he thought it was smooth. He said we got our flow going. It was good to compete really. It was good to compete against someone else other than our guys. I think it was a good day and obviously Was trying to say. Thank god against xavi. How buyer jets data island. Yeah it's much easier. You're not going against the dolphins secondary. But jake i think maybe i. I'm not gonna speak for you but i do think you know as hard as i've been on the second that he's cut or you know picked up or traded. I do think you know that could be what it takes to push him. Elevate him to that next level. I mean people joking. What if he ends up with in kansas city with patrick mahomes again. I mean then. I'll probably draft interesting right and my fantasy team. That's probably what will happen in that situation. Moving on jake. You mentioned the offense a lot of the offense success. This season is going to be surrounding the offensive line. And you know we talked about a little bit on the pre. Show some of the concerns. We had But that was more focused on the right side line. Now we're sitting here talking. Oh shit you know. This is the left side that we might need to be concerned about. So jake planet simple. Should we worry about austin jackson. As the teams left tackle. Without a lot of depth behind him you have written Five pressures panky and jackson allowed the second. Most pressures among tackles in week one. I think he was rated a thirty point. Five or one or something insane by pro football focus and again. We don't take those that's not gospel. You know those are not one hundred percent set in stone but to get a thirty. I mean i think jake you and i could probably went out. There may put up a thirty s coverage that might be pushing a little bit but he did having the pressures on eighteen snaps bit concerning civil like austin jackson. And it's just of music thing about the fact that you know despite us expecting all these guys to take that step. The dolphins don't have that depth on the offensive line especially after losing glucose. So i'm not ready to complete smash the panic button about objects did i mean. I think this dashboard drinking beer for about a year at the is the second year in the league But you do wish. There's a little bit adapt a little bit of. Let's say that let's set a line. Josh is really started. All part we think about kinley. I could burke fighting over there. I just seems like it's very shaky ground entity cool to see someone like learn coleman the teams seven round pick. He played at umass a little bit of a smaller school to say the least But he has the physical traits becoming offensive lineman. So i'm hoping maybe throughout the preseason regency start to slut by that second tackle spot and really start to kind of give the dolphins a little bit adapt at that might kind of sure with offensive line is really missing. Probably not but we can hope yet. And i hate that. We're so down on these second-year player so soon you know because again we talked about. Chicago's defense defensive. Front is pretty damn good so even if that was you know. Some of their backups. And things like that. I mean get sick to get sacked context. Yeah and again. i don't know man. I think you know we definitely have a reason to be concerned because again if if offensive line can't block and can't take that next step. I don't think this offense can't either jake. But with austin jackson young player against second season..

But you weren't here eagleton. An eve has put you on the hot seat given your most recent vacation apesse work hard play hard type of guy so no it has nothing. It has nothing to do with vacation. But i did understand. I wanted to know more about like where the team is coming from. And what they had offered him after seeing more of that i was a little bit more on his side and then seeing how we handled it and how they all were of all time. Hey no what. I'll i'll give it to him. After like it's finished like he went to practice. He was still participating. He did did everything right and they were civil and they figured oh to deal so it. It works forever. They haven't disclosed the terms yet right. He got yet he got a. I think he's making a little bit more than byron. Now he had he cared about he has a bunch of incentives which i was fine with the whole way. Like if it's anything based on your play then sure you should be paid more There is a little more guaranteed money which is also fine with and he also wants to restructure. After next year in case he plays better in wants more money gutter. Okay and you're happy with this. Yep he's like one of the best corners in the league. You can't really be upset about it. It's a win win for everyone. Okay you think he texted by maxwell like byron your shitty byrom no had and he was dog she's Texted him l. well. I mean like he. A reporter asked byron jones like at a press conference. Nita said like i get x. Wants to make his money. Like i don't want anything to do with this. But like i get where he's coming from those the extend that we kind of heard from it. I like byron. Jones wasn't gonna come out and be like you know what dolphins cut my paycheck. Like he doesn't care he's getting paid. We're all getting paid. The only people get paid out here. Apparently us Eagleson lamar and lamar eagleton. How was your trip. It was solid noticed the week out there in the bush. Kinda it was. It was nice. The why excuse where you guys. Don't say that you say you lived. You lived in a piece of shrubbery knowledge. That's the thing people like if you go out like not until like the forest but like camping or something like that. i'll say you're in the bush of cool with that that's wild that's like the wilderness. Yeah the wilderness the bush. You wouldn't you say we rank camping or you didn't go camping. It wasn't actually camping to things. Like i'm not gonna say that out in the bush and that has not feel like you should say the bush is. You could say that. I guess you wouldn't though buzz. Another jet what did you have anything else for us. Dolphins hockey trip light. Yeah i mean. Cfl's back on you guys need to come through canada's opening their snap back. "When exhibited howard and his double digit interception year when he led the league in such as two years ago. I could promise you it was not in zone defense so i really don't understand where that's coming from josh. What make saving howard so special. And i still can't understand it to this. Day is his ability to turn his head. One thing that my dad is always yelled at me. Since i started watching football with is quarterback. Turn your turn your head. The ball's coming and instead they failed our arms. Put them over the wide receiver. There's the penalty gave over the dolphins. Lose exe- vian however. Has this incredible timing of knowing exactly when the attorneys on top of that exactly what. It turned his head and catch the ball. That is man defense. This is a big time baller and that is straight of disrespect. I mean i don't wanna get too into these things because we could sit here and pick these breaks apart like you are right now. I mean. I guess their biggest thing would be if they made his own rating of fifty. You know saving howard and mad and he'd be frigging running towards the goal line. You know run in the opposite direction. Away from the play he'd be completely broken but to your point you know. His changed directions in eighty seven. His pursuit is an eighty three and then his play recognitions and ninety five. So i mean this is a guy who you know hopefully goes out there and plays in madden and again if you're into that sort of thing as you would expect on on the field but i'm jay. I don't know if you're surprised by this. But byron jones is eighty overall. So he's right behind avian howard. Last year. byron jones was gifted the x. factor. I don't know if again if you play madden recently. That basically means disturbs overpowered. I think exactly how is going to get it this year. But one and two on the miami dolphins examing howard and byron jones ninety one in eighty eight overall. Are you surprised by that at all. Not at all. I mean when you look at what. This team is founded on. brian floors. Vision is it's about having to physical quarterbacks on the outside and the dolphins at least right now is the time recording. The show seems to have that and they have probably the best hand in the nfl. Yeah no doubt about that. But again i mean if it trade happens you know latest roster update they're going to have exceeding however another team in as soon as he gets traded. I mean i joke but that ninety one overall will definitely go up a little bit. You know that man coverage will definitely go up a little bit. He'll probably be the ninety nine club sooner or later and jake. I hate how big that is like. I don't want to sound old and complain about you. do a made. It seems like there's like six or seven who are ninety nine overall ninety nine overall in general should not happen. I don't care if you're aaron. Donald is the way the statistics. The way everything's formulated. That's what ruined bed. In is the fact that so many ninety nine the fact the parody that exists in the nfl does not exist a madman. It's because we gotta make sure like a couple years ago. Moore's ninety nine which still kind of blows my mind. This day yeah. I'm so glad that we're doing this together. And i'm not just no whispering to myself because you're getting pretty heated and you know it's funny. We're sitting here talking about. There's too many ninety nine. Because i was going to make the claim that this next guy jason sanders. You know the third rate a player on the miami dolphins. Yeah he's a navy five overall again. Shame on me. I'm thinking he's probably the second or third highest rated kicker in this game. But i mean that's way too low. He has to kick power which is ninety four. Kick accuracy ninety three. So i'm you know again for how well he was. You know he was straight money. We were gonna change that s his name to a money sign. So that's a little bit of a low rating to me. He was definitely one of my snubs. I guess the thing about acres. And i'm going to be fair about it includes you know how athletic these guarino how fast they can run. And some of these deeper kickers that might even include statistics for throwing the ball with with the fake punts and field another field goals zone holding so never mind. Don't listen to me about that. But i understand where you're looking at speed and things like that where sanders should go down but that is kind of a kind of a bad situation to be. If you're bad it should be based on ninety three ninety four odd because as eighty five. It's not doing j. money. And he just not an all again. I mean i would wish we would've put a disclaimer at the beginning of this because none of this ship matters. You know these ratings. Don't matter and if the dolphins go out there and play as well as we expect you know these ratings should hopefully go up immediately but again you know abuse in the eye of holder and the fact that you know jason centers eighty-five some of these other guys are lower than we might expect. Maybe they'll continue to be snubbed by but to round out the top. Five jake i got. We got mica sickie eighty-five overall you know. Top eight tight end. I believe madden kind of where you'd expect then willful eighty five again that speedy wider series number one wide receiver on the miami dolphins roster devante. Parker is right behind him but again. We're not getting too too much of this any issues with those. Do you feel that. Maybe we'll full should have been a little lower you know may when these other guys i mean to me. It seems like ea at least has the top five players on the dolphins roster as far as talent when they're healthy. I think they did a pretty good job with that as far as i'm concerned. Yeah i mean we could get nit picky about that. But i think you know in madison. I have to say. I'm either surprised about how good a player is was. It was the right tackle. The dolphins scott from the falcons tyson kogo joined the dolphins in twenty thousand thirteen and he was a ninety nine overall her high nineties. Use the highest rated tackle and he came in at. He was not too great that. Let's just say that's when everyone started posting the attorneys thousand. Airports saying it's the miami dolphins. Starting offense fly. Thanks to t mobile for supporting this episode and for keeping baseball fans around.

"Nba fired coach deserves. Well probably the respected. I'm getting but nonetheless. I want to be treated with more respect. This is the donlevatar show with stu. Gods of cody. I wanted to get your thoughts here on something that has been on the docket for about five days that we have not gotten to. Which is that exhibit. Howard the quarterback for the miami dolphins who has more interceptions than anyone in the league over the last three years. He's been exceptional for the miami dolphins and for some reason brian flora's continues to run on the wrong side of some of his best players. You can make the argument that xavien howard has been the most productive dolphin over the last couple of seasons of any kind and he wrote on instagram. the following. I've given my heart and soul to the miami dolphins franchise since they draft in two thousand sixteen and wanna make it clear that i love my teammates. They're my family. But what i've learned is that the business side of the nfl proves organizations don't always have a player's best interests at heart. My experience with the dolphins the past few years has taught me that in two thousand eighteen. I signed an extension that. I'll admit i didn't completely understand or feel comfortable with. I played on that deal for two seasons in complain. But everyone knows i've significantly outperformed that deal. I'm one of the best quarterbacks in the nfl and the tape back up that claim the assignments. I'm giving shattering the opposition's best player with little help proves my value my worth yet. I'm the second highest paid cornerback on my o team and it's not even close. I want to clear up a few misconceptions about my situation. My agent david canter. And i have never once asked for completely new contract. Wanted things to work out with the dolphins and brought solutions to the table guarantee more money we felt were win wins for both sides there. Were these were proposals of adjustments. That wouldn't just make me feel more respected but would also be kept friendly but the dolphins refused everything propose. That is why. I don't feel like the organization is dealt with in good faith. I don't feel valued or respected by the dolphins. Just like they can take a business. I approach so can i. That's why i wanna make it clear. I'm not happy and have requested or trade until that trade happens. I'm just here so i don't get fined and we'll handle myself like professionals. Do greg cody. You're consistently pro management anti-labour. You are consistently a homer on behalf of the miami dolphins. What are your thoughts here. I wrote a column late last week. That exhibiting howard is one hundred percent right here. The dolphins tomato mess that they need to fix. And i think that they've had sixteen months to see this coming. And you know the level of frustration that happened in private in the background for it to come to that instagram posts where he's requesting a trade and being very specific about his frustrations sixteen months ago in free agency. They signed byron jones to a contract. Appreciably better than existing howard's contract byron jones who who had two interceptions last season to howard's ten exhibiting howard's the best player in the league at an essential position arguably the most valuable position other than quarterback and the dolphins need to make this right It it's not going to set a terrible precedent. You don't renegotiate everyone's contract you treat players differently. You keep happy the best players on your team. If it's a lousy guy a backup requesting a reworked contract then you take a hard line xavien howard and you're and he's not even the best paid cornerback on your team. You gotta make that right. Not everyone is using just interceptions as a stat so many people will look and say that exhibiting howard is a top five. Cornerback not the best quarterback but regardless he is somebody however you're doing the measurements. That is one of your best players if not. You're single most productive players. The thing that jumped out to me that i have not normally seen in these situations is him saying in his trade request. My brother my fellow. Cornerback that i'm in all these meanings with it's one thing for you to say great for him to put his name on. I'm underpaid compared to this guy and it's not even close saying that boldly. I'm better than this guy and deserve more money. You don't see that very often no it again for it to come to that point publicly. You know that The frustration that was building up and building up and building up over the past sixteen months. Not just this training camp fi. May i actually agree with what greg is saying. But i'm gonna wear the fan hat right now for a second and do the spoiled athlete thing. You didn't understand the deal that made you at the time. The highest paid cornerback in the league. I understand how that can happen. But the fact is you set the high water mark and since then people looked at that contract and that's how the nfl works for every position. Joe flacco has a ridiculous contract. Matt stafford as more ridiculous contract and we keep building up and we keep complaining about. When does it end. This was two thousand nineteen when he signed this deal at a certain point. You got to kind of honor. That no i would say that the frustration that they have as collectively bargained partners is you've got to honor that right up until the contracts are one in the teams can rip them up whenever they want. Their objection is actually to their own management to their own players union to their own structure that they agreed to their railing. And this is why. I thought you mentioned don van nada homeless or gaylord. Perry is we like to call man. It's easy to mix them up. Don van not wrote a story explaining to you. Hey the players union has done some unsealing things here. Damore smith has been an ally to the owners in a way that has allowed these guys to get railroaded in ways that they don't even understand. And here's the and howard saying. I'm in a bad system. Most people would agree with what you're saying. He has been objectively better than anybody who is playing the position on his team. And he's looking across. Imagine if that was happening in this workspace here or in yours. Greg where someone is putting their name on. I'm not paid correctly. According to our structure. I should be paid better than this guy. Who's my teammate. Who's in these meetings. I was surprised to see that sentence in there. It's different for you to say it. Greg them for him to say it. I totally agree it. It's not surprising that he would think it but to put that in in words publicly was surprising and it expresses exactly his his anger in his frustration at the whole situation and that the dolphins. Let's get to this. I think the most natural thing in the world is to compare your salary versus other people salary particularly people you work with and you know. It's one thing if the quarterbacks getting paid more than you because that's a positional thing but for another cornerback. Who you know. you're better than getting a better deal than than you have I can i totally get that frustrates. You realize though that basically what he said the in social media form this is why. I'm finding it to be so interesting. When do you ever hear. I'm better than byron joan. Because it's what he just said. I'm this dude that i'm in a meeting room with with my teammate. And a team sport the ultimate team sport. I've just put my name on. Hey you guys all know that. I'm better than this dude right. It's just not something you see. Very often donlevatar. Let's go to Eighty wow i think billy at eight instead of a b five day ball high guts never corner on the lines easy. Dcc donlevatar show with.

"We've talked about with the dolphins for the past couple of years. He's a homegrown superstar When a contract signed five years seventy two million dollars He is the number five. Paid cornerback in the nfl was will point number one Cap pits after this year of two million in one million Yearly cash is twelve twelve and twelve going through twenty twenty four You know this is for guys. A second round pick who showed out Obviously signed byron jones opposite him last year to sort of accentuate the the rebuild their I think i think the dolphins need to do everything they can to to keep him. Because this this would reset the timetable. I understand by the way byron jones. Fourteen million dollars this year right. But i understand the need to I they will get offers. They will get legitimate office especially even if they have to the team they get some has to renegotiate. You still want one of the best quarterbacks in football. Yeah but i feel like the dolphins. I know this is going to sound crazy because we're all with a long game here the nfl show. I don't think you can get. You're not going get fair value. You're going to get the two first round. Picks thing that everybody else gets for superstars in this league or one. I shot picking a bunch of twos or whatever but the dolphins. I expect a lot out of the dolphins fisher and xavi howard needs to be a part of that and i don't i understand like you know if we're going by the ballot check value thing here and he wouldn't deal saving howard yet deals avian howard two years from now and so. I would do everything i can to Put a band aid on this and just gets avian howard to to not have a trade request and just get him happy. Yeah i mean so. Saving howard has more at the pinnacle of his career at this point. Then stefan gilmore vitus into similar defenses. There's there's a slightly similar situation going on and one thing that i found myself thinking about is okay. Yes bill bell. Jack for example. And that's someone who. Brian florez learned from to a degree doesn't like to sort of capitulate to antics. Whatever not saying that. That's that's what david howard's actions amount to also note saying that that's what gilmore's actions amount to it's a fallacy that that's not sort of. That's just a blanket. Application even in these very sort of results oriented no-nonsense locker rooms. It matters who you are matters. The star power of the player and particularly matters how much the team can sort of compensate for your absence right. And so a in that defense. Particularly a shutdown like incredible man coroner basically unlocks what the rest of the defenses is trying to do. It's really really really hard to do that. If you're not getting high level play there in a way that in that system bacon scheme pressure they don't need you know world-beater defensive they can figure that out. It's not that they wouldn't like to have them but they can figure that stuff out right now. The way that those defenses are playing is predicated on really really good secondary play and particularly having one of the better quarterbacks and football at least one so i see a little bit of a correlation where yes obviously neither one of those teams in the business of doing stupid stuff but you do have to recognize who the player is not just in terms of where they fall in as best in their position. Top five whatever but what that role means to the defense team as a whole and i think that gives both of those players you know just a little extra shot a leverage because things would look really really different without them i i. It's funny because it's both those things because you know in some in some teams all. We really need an athletic linebacker They can you know unlock when we're nickel right but it's pretty obvious that all thirty teams would want saving our Ten interceptions last year. I burst antonio commodity to do that. This next gen stats since two thousand..

"You know you don't get a panini because you're not practicing and we're just allowing you to be here like do you put out like hold out food for him in the lobby. And he asked to eat like the he s to eat like the wet bread jersey. Mike sub trae like and then everybody else gets the nutritional food you know like i don't know i it's there's just a lot of mechanics here. Wow remind me. Never to get into a contract dispute with connor the The thing with our dear regardless of of what they end up feeding him and what his bathroom access ends of. It's just sort of an interesting dynamic because you know he got his contract a couple years ago. It is a bit of an outdated contracts. It's especially now dated contract in miami. When they paid byron jones this huge deal and i think maybe a year ago you could argue. Maybe even footing even jones. A little bit better than howard. I don't think that argument is is. It doesn't hold water anymore. It yelich saving. Howard outperformed byron jones in the same system last year and howard is probably more deserving but it is that sort of dynamic where it's like and i think anyone at any workplace in the world can relate to this. Is you end up. Dipping into the free agency pool and maybe overpaying someone to bring them in and then you sort of forget like oh yeah oh that the the people who are here probably not probably not thrilled about looking at that salary compared to that too. There's at this point. Yeah unsure what that's like. But i'm i'm guessing it's probably very frustrating For those on on that end of the Those on that end of the of the table. But yeah no i the business end of this is entirely perpetually fascinating to me and it's a wonder that thirty two teams make it to the first week without people just like screaming and like t- burning the facility down like all the office the.

"But josh i have to stay enjoying doing list. I mean it's work but i'm having so much fun just kind of talking. You mentioned how helping the twitter communities bid despite some beat riot. Writers apparently have some sort of group chat with a talk down to fans. I mean that truly sounds productive. But i mean it's a very dime to kind of sit here and scroll through twitter so i kinda wanna get your feeling. Has any big opinions changed for you after the first few days a camp because i wanted to say that albert wilson is trending in the direction. I wanna stay. He's going towards being the guy that can really ignite this offense to another level. And i don't want to make that silica he'll turn. This is something that really is coming out of nowhere. Especially when you mentioned the fact that wilson was working with two in the offseason. If you think back in two thousand. Nineteen when wilson finally looked healthy in the last two games. He looked like the of old. That was hi fi. Takim grant so josh. I mean this. There hasn't been a lot of doom and gloom but this receiving court is really going to be interesting. Because when you see guys like albert wilson showing outback holland's actually had a couple of good days. There's some receivers that are going to be really hard to keep on this roster. And i think that's kind of been one of my biggest ways so far. I think that again is kind of why the dolphins might be strategically trying to store some of these guys on public and try to figure out a way to buy some timing of some of these younger players some but i think the biggest takeaway for me. It has to be no. We're sitting here. And i kept hearing back and forth. I was only teeter totter. You know going up and down trying to figure out which side of the field. I was the only thing saving howard and while we continue to talk about awesome. Is you know part of me is rubbed a little bit wrong by not only that announcement that he made but now again the reports earlier today so i guess that's my biggest takeaway then on top of that. We talked about it. You know who stepping into that role. I mean no eggnog. And he should be the guy. But i think that video macon's i think he might have been the corner. That got beat on that touchdown. Because i saw people joking that getting beat by collins you know. Of course there's some type of doom and gloom out there but to me jake when you lose a guy like he's aiming howard and again we're we're just assuming that maybe he gets traded to me. I wanna know who's gonna fill roles gonna be nick. Needham is going to be again no monogamy. Are they ready because again a lot of people were down. How byron jones play last year Byron jones look pretty damn awesome Opposite of one of those guys you know he was brought in here to be that shutdown guy and without excellent side. We could be in for a long year. So i guess those two positions how wide receivers fill out and just how that defensive backroom plays out with the minor injury in the trade rumors. Those to would be the biggest concerns. I guess but overall. I'm just superstock to be talking about football and again you know we always talk about. The offense is so far behind the defense and yes. A lot of these touchdowns are probably coming red zone work. But i mean i don't remember in years past here so many explosive plays and again. Maybe it's just you know. Maybe it's just you know. Wingfield is generally a positive person. He's trying to bring good into the dolphins in this fan base. You know so. Maybe we're missing some of the negative. I didn't see omer tweeted all today. So i i don't know but i'm just so glad that we're seeing y'all fence going out there and doing good things at least in day three camp ask so i think a couple of notes. We have is knowing banana. Good knees look jack. I don't like having the weight conversations because if you're having wait. Conversations so-and-so player gained weight so and so player lost weight so looks red. You're not talking about what they're doing on the field so we. I think we still need to see it from him. And that number nine. He's raring sticks out like a sore thumb. I guess byron jones headstrong strong plays and you mentioned someone nick. Needham i mean this is a guy who doesn't take any stance for granted read. This is a guy who wasn't drafted. He had to work his way into the nfl and these are opportunities. He instantly could see last night any day so he's actually been someone who's been sticking out a lot too. I don't wanna say that need them kind of like a summer player option like a training camp guy but but he really shows up during these practices during this time so hopefully he can kind of return to twenty nineteen where he was pretty. Strong last year. Limited time i know was playing muslim. Struggled a little bit. And also i think one thing. I think we're gonna have the hardest time adjusting to is the amount of usa team. Has you know we talked about the idea that. Dj fluker is debt. Jessie davis is dan. You have three different guys. Three young guys possibly four starting on that offensive line right on the other side of the you know josh. The one guy you bring up so much. I mentioned the smiling ear to year. I've never seen a bigger smile..

"By mercedes benz the best or nothing. So okay so i hear you. You think the randall. Cobb things okay but i had to exacts that said. He's all these an expensive. He can't play it's washed. He was approachable seven years ago. He's a know he's diminishing player and to me. It feels like this is why players are players executives or executive in coaches or coaches. You just drafted a slot kid. Who's who's calms randall. Cobb be cautioned. Nothing he was a third round player. And i'm looking at the packers. And i'm like this is not a team up against when you pay a quarterback thirty six million a year. You're up against the cap. You can't be spending seven eight nine million dollars on randall cobb. Look i don't like it at all but you're okay with it but don't look at rental cop in terms of what he's going to add to the team. Look at randall cobb. In terms of what it did for arrivers coming back at a camp. That's what this is about wasn't that they look at this and said hey we gotta go get him back because he's the difference between us winning the championship game and not this was this was up throw in a concession for for aaron rodgers and the guy who won this whole air reiver's green bay Discussion or debate or conflict is randall. Cobb got the best situation of anybody in this. He gets go play with aaron rodgers and he gets his contract is is is taking care of it. It's great it's fantastic for him. Yeah for randall. cobb. It's wonderful you the best course. I don't think he wanted. Yeah so when you look at the whole. The resolution with aaron rodgers the new contract what was your takeaway on it might take added is if if it comes out that he still under contract for next year than this is a small w for aaron rodgers because as long as the green bay packers still have control over his rights next year then then they win they they win they get him back into cap he plays all year they guarantee what his twelve main salary who who cares using to get that no matter what and now they still have control over him next season throwing little randall cobb as a concession and the packers absolutely came out on top and this is more of a face saving thing for for aaron than anything else he's in no different spot they should make this the second last dance so this this move. I'm surprised it's not getting more publicity. I think avian howard. There's an argument to be made the best corner in the nfl. He led the nfl. Had ten picks that is and by the way that's a lot of picks a division where new england and the jets quarterback situation was unsettled. It you know it's like those teams would prefer running the football. I think he's a generational talent. He's fifteen million bucks. I if i was a general manager. Who doesn't need another top corner. I mean even if you had jerry alexandra for green bay what do you do. If you're miami and a player this good and i would imagine you think. He's this good wants out they can't do. They can't move. They absolutely cannot move. This organization is in a totally different spot than they have been the last couple of years. They gotta win and this is. This is their best player. The problem is when you got byron. Jones setting the bar in terms of salary and he's in the same film room watching the same plays over and over and byron jones giving up a hundred eight quarterback rating on on throws against some seventeen almost eighteen yards per reception and has four career interceptions. In six years i understand. Why is matt. I get that. And it's it's insult to injury when you're in the room and watching it and i promise you there's a lot of things he seen that we haven't seen on tape. Which prime makes them that much angrier about his current situation. Now that being said i don't know if they're going to come to a resolution that he's absolutely happy with but in terms of guaranteeing some more money form or trying to do something from abandoned perspective. I think miami has has to do that because they can't trade him. They can't do it at this point in this administration otherwise the administrations. I can be around that much longer. So mike sando comes out. He interviews executives quarterbacks coaches. it's very thorough. He puts four tiers of quarterbacks. An interesting part of this is to a with. Miami is like middle to bottom of tier four and the comments from executives are. I don't see it. He's not dynamic. When the pa pocket gets muddy he he diminishes quickly listen. They're gonna ride and die with an issue. There's no getting around that. But what do you make of to. How long can miami be patient. I i won't say i'm not saying that. He is tom brady but what i am saying. Is that tom brady. His rookie year was not very good and he developed a tremendous amount from year one to year two and then even near to when had an opportunity to play. We scored three offensive touchdowns in the playoff. Run the super bowl so it wasn't just tom brady. Who led the team to championship and he continued to improve your on your own. So if you look at this player or any player say after one year your rookie year at the hardest this league at a team that you could say was good. Offensively had some good things offensively but but no by no means. Was ron dominant talent. That he can't continue to prove. I think that i think that's wrong. And if there is any feeling the organization that that is the case that they blew it and they didn't try to rectify this year when they had such such high draft capital. Then that's that's an even bigger mistake. They just compounded but we got to give them a chess now. It's interesting though. Brady did not grow up generational. The game has changed to ahead ten thousand snaps. By the time he was nine years old tool was in camps quarterback. Coaching brady did not grow up in that environment. Drew bledsoe jokes. he's like. I had like eighteen highschool games. Now there's summer quarterback coaching so. My theory is been judged quarterbacks differently today than ten to fifteen years ago. My demands are if you're sixteen games in and i don't see it. I'm not going to give you the second third fourth year. And and and i disagreed with bill polling on this. The world's changed the quarterback coaching better. If you get the thanksgiving and you just don't see it. don't you have to like. That's when meeting like daniel jones same thing. He grew up in this generation of quarterback camps great. Coaching thirty thousand throws with the time. He's thirteen years old. Does that not. Can't we quantify some of it. That way i tuned degree and low to a plane at alabama. Which was the the all star team. It's hard to judge any quarterback that that plays that system because they're more talented than than some nfl teams than. They're almost always more talented than than everybody. They place you've got you've got a little bit of an asterix air in terms of pro football versus college football. It's a very different game. And it's very different than high school football too you're seeing multiples of multiples of a blitzes. Combination coverages defensive packages. You're asked to do that. Many more things and guys build reps at different paces. You wish that every guy came in and picked up things instantly and we're good at things instantly but there's different learning curves and the demand is so much higher in the nfl than college football. You gotta give him the benefit of the doubt at least in my mind two years.

"But josh there is obviously a a little bit of room for improvement especially when you look at that bills game and how everything kind of Fell apart the one interesting. No i have about the second air here when you look at the oldest guys being byron jones and eric rowe at twenty eight before bring according to his twenty three. There's a really unique gap in terms of the miami. Dolphins secondary You have someone like Exhibit howard is twenty seven and the next closest guy to in howard. If we're talking about younger players is brandon jones at twenty three. There's nobody from. Twenty six to twenty eight in the dolphins secondary. And and i think the where do you see every kind of fitting in i. Do you see any been of concern that. There's a little bit of a gap between the older guys who know what they're doing. These rookies for trip. Still trying to figure out the issue. I had last year. I mean he was behind to absolute stuns at cornerback and he wasn't going to get any chance on the field unless one of them got her. He saw that plane time to vote. He got some plays at benico. Cornerback but i mean for us to sit here and justify eggnog. Knee is a first round. Pick and you know some people strings enough have already calling a bus but for a first round pick trajectory. I mean first year second year. You see that massive jump. Does he make a push for boundary spot. Is he making a push with coleman With like nick needham. Four that cornerbacks job. Yeah and i think. That's what brian floors jailed. Alexandra been touched on wednesday. He was working more inside. You know now they learned the preliminary starting to some of that stuff on inside at nickel. You know run support and things like that so You know. I hope to see eggnog. Any kind of take that next step and try to forge his role at nickel corner. Because that would be awesome to see. And then even have that versatility to play on the perimeter But jake tear to your point you know. Do i believe there's a huge drop off between exciting howard and byron jones. Those young guys absolutely and we saw front and center in that buffalo game early on we saw you know stefan continue talking about that cross or you know we see how the defense looks when those guys are out of the lineup. And it's just not a good feeling and it makes you wonder why fans would even want to entertain an idea to train exhibit howard when you think about it you know. Then you're throwing no egg menagian there then you don't have anyone else. You don't have security blanket. So i definitely think there's concern there but i also think it goes back to what the coach said you know. Last year even byron jones took some time to get this system down. He's in there taking notes. He's trying to get better. I think those younger guys are seeing that. And i think you know. Maybe it's a good thing that got those two elite corners and i say elite because up until last year byron jones name was up there maybe obvious the consistency but he was when he was good. He was good. He was aiming howard again. I don't think would at ten receptions if it wasn't for him but you know maybe it's just me i'm giddy thinking about it because i think we just tapped into something here. You know the dolphins at two of the best corners in the nfl. And i think that they can sit here and take some these younger guys under their wing and get the best out of them. I mean that's pretty cool to see. So i don't know what's gonna ultimately happened here but i think you know. Exerting howard byron jones and then if you can get no eggnog in there that to me is one hell of a starting three and then you know you just figure out the rest of that and again. I'm not. i'm not too sure. The dolphins don't think they can plug and play at all these different positions because we've seen it in the past Bobby mccain the one guy who is returning in the secondary. He played ninety eight percent or more of snaps in nine games for the miami dolphins defense last year Over fifty percent every game. He played hundred percent of snaps and six straight games. I mean the dude was was the definition of a workhorse for the miami dolphins and then you have someone like brennan jones up. I've been one to kinda talk. Highly of him this year. about his growth. I thought he had a pretty solid rookie season. But but i saw an interesting trend where he started a he played in fifty percent of snaps in five or more games but he really dropped off near the end of the season. Twenty five percent week sixteen And twenty percent in week seventeen there were just other safeties. Getting more steps than him But when you look at this group. Josh i remember thinking pre-draft what would it be crazy. Pick for the miami dolphins to take early because you know the projections we we create. They're not always going to be one hundred percent. Things are going to have to be expected. I thought safety would be one of those picks. So i guess this whole kind of exercise here has been me working up to the question you know. Spend a third round pick on british jones. Who again was decent simple. We saw him kind of Moose's role a bit near the end of the year. I don't know if that's just kind of Based on the different personnel on the opposing side line. Or what but you have him as a third round pick of ink monogamy as the first round pick and you have holland. Here's early second round pick. I mean there's with that much capital spent in the secondary. This team has to really push the guys again. Like i said. I don't think byron jones and sabin howard are going to boozer starting jobs. I looked to see them. Start sixteen games but in order for these high top tier picks to really justify their value. I mean these guys have to be on the field. And i don't know if i necessarily see defense where all these guys are really being. Impact players with with air grow and exhibiting howard in byron jones being at a different level than than this group. A younger guys. Yeah that's a good point. I mean you can sure code all you want but let's go to what your timelines cetera with a little rundown says and you straight up you and for we're talking about this before the draft. He mentioned safety. You mentioned tight end. So you know both you because those were positions at the dolphin fan base and you know many outsiders thought were pretty much set but jake goes back to the nfl and as cliche as it sounds. It's just moving to that. Pass i league know you say here. You've got byron jones with the big contract you got examine. How are the big contract at some point. You're going to have to get rid of one of those guys and you're going to have to try to pay some your own so i don't know that we're going to have the luxury of having these two elite corners like we do right now but i'm interested to see the way it all shapes up because again if no aid monogamy can even become half the corner that the dolphins thought he was when they drafted him. You know they'll be in pretty damn good shape and it won't be so bad lose guys like a mccain or one of those other guys enter ramp up this conversation here about the secondary i wrote a story on this for the finsider and it actually some pretty good numbers. So if you'd like you get some reading whether you have a a couple of free minutes or otherwise. Go check that out. I'm not trying to say this is like a bad thing at any ways a. I'm just thinking a year or two down the road. We have to kind of decide where these good draft picks are not. i mean. The dolphins secondary is going to have to look a lot different for us to really be happy with all these picks and think. The dolphins really made the right decisions moving forward again. I'm not doubting it. But i just think it's a really interesting transition. Obviously teams changing evolve every year and the miami dolphins secondary despite bringing back know for the five quote unquote. Starters is going to be no different than that. I'll let you have been to a quick break here. And i'm other side we're gonna talk about the biggest biggest Question of the week. I really have are we myles. Gaskin guys now is a mouse gaskin. Podcast will jump into that right after this break. Substitute support for this episode comes from locker room the app. That's changing the way we talk. Sports locker room sports fans dream. "Here on CBS Sports Radio Switching to the agency for a second, You got the playoff picture. It's pretty packed over there. Miami and Baltimore Cleveland, Indianapolis. Over something to play is there one of those teams that you think is, uh less live that that you just would? You know, if you could leave one of those teams out which of those teams would you leave out? Um I mean, I guess you might have to say Miami just because the offense doesn't have you know quite as much juice as the other ones, especially when they have to, uh, under center at as opposed to this Patrick, at least in terms of the way they play, but I love watching that even because the defense Unbelievable looks like the Patriots defense. From last year. They're just chicken, egg savior Howard and Byron Jones on the receivers on the outside and getting so creative with everything else they do. It's a lot of fun to watch. But I don't know. I would rather see a lot of points and Dolphins games don't tend to have that to untouchable. Oh, well where you have with him. I mean, he hasn't turned the ball over much, but you know they had to replace him in the last game because he also isn't putting the ball down the field. He's a rookie. So that clearly you know, there's plenty of room for growth. But what you're, you know, got read assessment on both him that now in his future It's really tough to say I mean, I think they have to take, you know a long look at you know, do they think, too, is really the guy or do they want to use this Texans draft pick that's going to be in the top five and might be number three. One of the quarterbacks coming out in the dress to a has been Fine and Most of the time. That's that's fine for rookie quarterback. Most rookie quarterbacks are bad. But Joe Burrow was quite good. And Justin Herbert in quite good and two. It hasn't really been on the level of those guys. And you got the quarterback draft class. That looks unbelievable again. It's worth a look. I don't know what that necessarily means. They should do it. They could also trade down, get a whole lot more pics surround to it with the kind of infrastructure where it doesn't matter if he is an extremely low risk quarterback, and he's like Alex, Miss of the Southeast. Oh, you know all of the different ways they could go are worth considering. But he's certainly not a guy yet where you would say, you know, you can't consider taking somebody else. You just He hasn't shown the kind of feeling to say he's definitely going to be the starter for 10 years or so. Yeah, I've always said about Ryan Fitzpatrick. He's almost his own class of quarterback. Where if your quarterback is worse than Fitzpatrick, you're in bad shape. If your quarterbacks better than Fitzpatrick, you're in good shape. And if your quarterback is Fitzpatrick, he's you know, eventually gonna be replaced, Um, you know, and it's Patrick, you know, as a kind of clearly looked like the guy that gives the Dolphins more juice. Offensively, which is not a you know, a great indicator for two hours, But you always know, you know you don't want to rush the judgment either in or in a rookie season. It's just I guess the learning curve is been accelerated so much by how often we see guys have success. You know, early nowadays we get thrown into the fire early nowadays. Yeah, definitely. And I mean, I think you know you're right under Patrick. He's certainly shown a higher ceiling. But he's also got you know such a low floor because he's so willing to put the ball in danger and turn it over, and that's the one thing that has really had going for him. Is. He just won't put the ball at risk of being turned over for the most part, And that's something when your defense is as good as Miami's is, that's that's something comforting to have out there where you just know. You're going to move the ball. You're not going to give it to the other team on. They're never gonna have short fields against your defense. You can. You can win two games that way. There she was, If you actually get down, and then you know you don't have somebody was pushing the ball downfield is very tough to come back. One of the team. I won't ask you about quickly. Really not. You know, It's not not about this weekend so much, But we're talking about the contenders and the bills and the Packers. Come up. Where you with Seattle. Right now, like this was a team that was putting up points. But you know, the defense was looking bad. Now I look at their their recent games. Now the schedule plays a lot into this. They're playing the Giants Jets. You know, the Eagles Washington But it's since let's say that Rams game that they lost 23 to 16. They've allowed 16 21 17 12 3 15. Nine points. Do you think the Seahawks are a legitimate threat to win that conference? I mean, they've got, you know, one of the small handful of best quarterbacks. In the NFL, so they're definitely a legitimate threat their defense You know, the competition has been easier, but it's definitely been playing better, too. They're just getting quarterback more often than they were early in the season. Obviously having Carlos Dunlap now helps that a lot. Jamal Adams has been playing well. He came back. Of his injury, But where I'm at with them is mostly just angry. Pete Carroll and Brian Schottenheimer like It's clear they never actually wanted to let us cook and they took the first opportunity they could to stop letting him cook, and it just makes me really match. You just want to see Russell Wilson fully unleashed..

Cowboys may use both tags on Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper

"The final year specifies that each of the NFL's thirty two teams can use both the franchise and transition tags this particular offseason that historic guarantee. If you don't know what that is you know franchise in transition tags in general I mean we. We have all sorts of information if you really want to understand the depths of them but in general the franchise and transition tag are ways that NFL teams can protect players that are set to be free agents. If you don't WanNA player to hit free agency you don't want me hit the open market. Bam you slapped a franchise or transition tag on them and typically generally only one is available to each NFL team so you have to pick which player you want to place a franchise tag on right or transition. Whatever the movie and so the fact that all. Nfl teams would be able to utilize both of them. This offseason really served as an incredible asset for the cowboys wrote about this last year. We wrote about this in March. Nineteen how we talked about then. Hey next offseason. The cowboys could have this really awesome tidbit in the that was the title of the article. That could really help them. Because of the cowboys find themselves in a position and we we kind of forecast this year ago where they have three big players that new contract extensions that are set to be true free agents Dak Prescott Amari Cooper and Byron Jones. You knew that and so while you can shake combination however you want in all likelihood the Dallas cowboys were going to Franchise Tag Prescott because it seems incredibly unlikely that deal done before that happens. Before the franchise tag deadline and then they were going to place the transition tag on either Amari Cooper or Byron Jones. Whoever you believe more likely personally I believe it was Amari Cooper but that would prevent both of those players from hitting the open market. Which means the cowboys could protect them. That's a big deal in. It seems like in this again. My personal opinion and and other people it'd be to share these thoughts and certainly a lot of our readers and commenters and listeners but a lot of people had kind of sort of made the assumption that the cowboys have accepted that they're going to lose Byron Jones. And you know what I think. I think I speak for all of us. That are listening. Here we're all gathered around the campfire. You know what if the cowboys is Byron? Jones not ideal but at least they have Dakhil these they have. They can figure this out. Maybe they spend their first round. Pick on cornerback. Whatever not trying to get to far into those weeds but the ability to keep both deck and Amari was and is a gigantic advantage. That the cowboys have going for them. How ever if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached in so far again at the time of this recording. We have the half that the owners have to comply with if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached it will essentially rendered the ability for teams to use both tags moot and they will revert to normal circumstances where there can only place one tag on one player. Now if you have not out by now you need to know that this hypothetical world which is I would say somewhat imminent in somewhat inevitable based on the rates that the collective bargaining agreement is happening and again as we sit on Thursday night. There's so many players kind of tweeting that they don't like the new. Cba proposal and whatnot so there could be some back and forth but if this is finalized before free agency and there's still a couple of weeks and those are going to be very important weeks then. Dak Prescott has all of the leverage in the world and all of the leverage in the world and we touched on this at the end of Thursday's episode because if that's the case and you and I were representing Dak Prescott. Then guess. What our point in our proposal to Jerry Jones Stephen Jones in the cowboys organization? Hey Dude if you don't if you don't get a deal done with us if you don't give deck all the money's basically you're going to have to tag them we all know that and if you tag back guess what you cannot tag anybody else if you tag back. Guess what. Amari Cooper and Byron Jones are going to be true free agents. You're going to be competing with the market for them. That is not ideal and other cowboys went from a world where they were probably going to lose one of the two. Probably going to be Byron Jones right to now that could potentially lose both of them which which would be a complete and utter disaster. And you know you can. You can play hindsight's twenty twenty but if the cowboys had just up to their contract offer to Dak Prescott Uruguay. I mean. We're talking thirty. Three thirty four million dollars per year. Everybody freaked out about that last year. That would look like such a bargain out. That's what happens with these deals. We've talked about that Matt Ryan to use thirty million dollars annually. Everybody freaked out now. That looks super cheap. And if the cowboys had done that they would have the ability to use the franchise tag on either Amari Cooper or Byron Jones win this ultimate sort of hypothetical becomes a reality and they would theoretically only lose one. Maybe not even either. So now the cowboys win till the eleventh hour is going to cost them in a literal financial sense where they're gonNA have to pay Dak Prescott more money and it could cost them in the capacity that they are now going to lose Byron Jones. And maybe even Amari Cooper now I should say that there is a a ray of hope. I suppose because you know look you may think this and I don't mean new but I mean I mean other person the other person here my think Jerry Jones is just. You know the cowboys. They don't know what they're doing. They're messing up. But there is a possibility. Because Jerry Jones is typically a big proponent for things like this the specialty. Nfl adding another wildcard round and round and other wildcard teams. A seventeenth game that is upping the value for every NFL owner. Jerry Jones is obviously very involved when I was on. Espn San Antonio on Thursday. We head John Maclean from the Houston Chronicle legendary. Nfl reporter one of the best. Ever do it and I John. I said look you know. Is it possible? The Jerry Jones kind of knew that this was coming that he was going to lose his ability to use both tags and somewhat prepared. Here's John Maclean said on. Espn Antonio John. You mentioned the The franchise transition tag loophole. That may be filled up and unavailable to the cowboys. Now maybe I'm giving Jerry Jones and co a little bit too much of the benefit of the doubt here. But in your estimation do you think that they you know Jerry Jones at least and we don't know the way the votes win but that he would seemingly be at the very least somewhat in support of this which would negate the ability to tag to players if he did not have a plan in place to at the very least keep one or two of these. You know high price three free agents. They have Adak Amari. I'm Byron Jones before the Franchise. Tag deadline that that's a great point. Jerry Jones. One of the movers and shakers in driving this agreement and even though it could hurt him. But I think Jerry all along you can't keep everybody I expect them to Cape Prescott and probably Cooper if Byron Jones those on the market. He's got a chance to be is defensive defensive back in yesterday I think teams are going to line up to give him a record-breaking deal. I don't think they would do that. With the Mario Cooper. There's too many good receivers. It's a great year for receivers coming out the draft. It's a good year for corners. If you don't mean Horn and the top after the first round so say they let Burne Jones go say the replacing with a cheaper free agent or they go after a corner in the draft and they can even train them they might have their pick of all of them no big deal John Maclean said it was a great point no big deal deal no big deal but anyway I think that if you're looking again if you're trying to be positive trying to be optimistic. I think there are two things to note one is that this is not probably not a surprise to cut the cowboys. Brass right like they had to have known that the collective bargaining agreement could be You know a a new one could be struck and therefore the ability that they were potentially leaning on to utilize both tags would be rendered moods and so they had to potentially be prepared for that. Maybe they all prepared for that. Maybe the preparedness is the preparedness to lose both Byron Jones in Amari Cooper. Who knows the other thing is that Adam schefter head tweet about this where he said Some something to the effect of if there's a new CBA expect a flurry of roster moves. And it's possible that you know we. We've heard so much about how different players in different guys and especially quarterbacks are awaiting the new CBA strike new contracts because they want a piece of whatever. The new percentages that players are going to get and whatnot and so we'll see so it also is possible that maybe the deal lanes right after the new. Cba struck because maybe DAX team is waiting for a new CBA to all to make their move. So who knows? But that's the positive side of things if you're trying to be positive so it is what it
