"That's the one that I don't know how you change it, I don't know how you fix it. I don't think you can like put it on VOD and then everything works out and it plays well. You know, it's not going to be that kind of a thing. But that's the movie that it satisfies older audiences because of its source material. It satisfies younger audiences because it is a younger story. It's got an incredibly diverse cast, a lot of fresh faces. It features an old and older performer who's been recognized by the academy and Rita Moreno. It's got all of these like pieces to the puzzle. That we think of when we think of a best picture. It's not my favorite movie. I know it's one of your favorites from last year. I thought it was like a top 20 movie for me from last year. But it feels like a worthy candidate for what the Oscars typically selects. Yeah, I think you're right, and I really liked it, but also what a dire situation to be and where we're arguing for a little scene remake of a movie that already won best picture to win best picture and save the Oscars. That's bad. Things are things are bad out there. Things are bad out there. You know, they're not bad. Where? In the comment brothers universe. The monography of the Coen brothers. What a segue. Of Joel and Ethan. Let's just as a 20 minute hark. So I need you to just accept. No, I know. Well, here's my heart. Suit, you have done this several times in public. You can find Sean's original list on the ringer. Yeah, so I did it in 2018 when the ballad of buster scruggs was released and at the time it was self parody. At the time, I was like, how stupid to try to rank these movies? And could you imagine if the Coen brothers sat down and looked at some dweeb on the Internet's ranking of their movies? They have literally been making movies mocking, though those kinds of exercises for a long, long time. And yet, I'm compelled, you know? I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really loved their movies. I really wear. I have watched their movies so so many times over and over and over again. I think there is something very here's what it is. It's tone. They have a master of their own tone that is uniquely theirs, and it is informed, of course, by Preston Sturges movies, which are also movies that I really care about. It's informed by great westerns and noir thrillers and all kinds of classic genre exercises. They're also informed by Shakespeare and the Bible and this very kind of hermetic Bob Dylan influenced 1960s Minnesota upbringing. You know, they're dorks, and they're really like, they're like mean cool dorks. And that's my crew. Those are my people. And so I've always had such an affinity for them ever since I saw Fargo. Fargo was the first movie of theirs that I saw. And Fargo just completely changed my perception of not just what movies could be, but what quote unquote important movies could be. Fargo, winning best picture. Much like seeing throne of blood around the same time, I was like, oh wow..

"I asked all of you to pick five of your most reliable movies even as I'm here now. I'm thinking of other movies that I would have put on my list to Adam do you want to kick us off with one of yours absolutely? My number five is more of a movie. Batman begins and for me. That's because it has a four x structure James Unconventional. It basically created the modern superhero movie. It was the one that I think we all wanted and they finally figured out how to make it. And there's really no downtime. There's a little bit once once. The Second Act ends Bruce's coming back from being a Ninja. There's a little bit of time but even then it just keeps going well. I think that's part of it too. It feels like the movies constantly restarting like. It doesn't lose the momentum that you got from the last thing. But if almost feels like buster scruggs like it's like and now a news story in this world you love except that it it still builds on the stakes of the previous one. So yeah you have the beginning and you have what you have him going going here. It's Ninja Studies. But then flashback of him as a kid. Yeah and then but then it goes then it goes all right now. He's back in Gothenburg. There's more to this than just him being Ninja. It's him in Gotha somewhere between forty five minutes. An hour between forty five minutes in an hour until he becomes Batman Which is the that is. The best way of doing every other version has been high and Michael Keaton. I'll be Batman today. I hope you enjoy the film kids and then it just there. It's interesting that you liked that because I feel like mostly my gripe with a lot of Origin movies is. Oh you're it's the wait to get to that point and you're like just have them be it already. I think is Batman begins it so well and it had not been done before other than you got taste of like in the animated series and. I think it was like fracturing. This is on the tip of everyone's talking about if you if you just did a few things man and then they'd knocked it out of the park and it was. It's so damn good. I think that that's like probably the one Batman movie other than the dark night but dark knight even a watch. Jerry the Was He the joker parts. But like Batman begins. I love from beginning to end. See I know. I've definitely seen dark knight more than I've Seen Batman begins. I saw dark knight three times in the theater rich but I understand the news. Twelve years ago cheaper. I understand the difference that you're expanding because they think dark knight is one coherent story. That is just snowballing. Whereas Batman begins is like like you know these restarts again and again and it's way easier to be like I'm just GonNa Throw Him Batman begins and watch it. Yeah and infielder and tear to your point at least taking awhile. I think probably because audiences were ready for this. It's more satisfying when you get to Batman instead of just getting right away like you learned to appreciate it like you go. Oh this journey because remember. There's a guy who worked at the time he's like why has Bam Entry Ninjas stupid as a 'cause he trains jerk compelling to watch as well a lot Lindsey one of the movies on your list. I actually knew this was one. Eight year your. He's talked about buying definitely easy to put a Christmas movie on like a Rewatch ables list of because you have the opportunity every year to have those feelings and this is my number one holiday. Christmas rewatch -able movie. I watch it every year. I made you guys all watch it and put it. I bought it on Amazon Prime. Tell me lousy with the movie watcher itself. Oh thank you you never said the movement. Sorry I have eyeballs. Oh a lot of lead up and then you're GONNA build fit. I thought it was building to James. Caan you're a big fan of and the actor who played the kid overall favorite movies. Now I love it so much. Because it's it's that feel-good movie I mean it's a holiday movie so that's like Bilton but it's just really funny Yeah Yeah it's a great holiday comedy. I I remember walking away from this movie and being like I like the two thirds of it and it's charming guy. That's and that's why we're lucky that we have a will. Ferrell holiday movie. That isn't Daddy's home. Two good that we have this they were GONNA call that. Daddy's homer Yeah L. Flake. I think you hit the nail on the head with Chris Movies They. They need to be engineered for that. Yeah because that's the sign of a good lasting. Chris movie like home alone. I've seen more times than I can say to. The it's Christmas story marathon. I was GONNA say as long as it's better than a Christmas story and kids have to grow up watching that anymore. Oh God yeah. So here's the I think the interesting thing about a Christmas movie is that it should be about more than just. Christmas is like hard about Christmas. But it's about way more than just Christmas. Yeah like family. You kinda reunited so it's it's a from a different time when you could. You could mock little people. Yeah well That man went on to be tearing Lancaster. And what have you done with your life me not a lot not a lot. James. You hit the nail on the head with twenty years. I've seen this movie a billion fucking times gladiator. Yeah Wow yeah well. It's because there are lots of obviously we could see the movie. Certain people were putting in and stuff like that but I was like. I was like well action movies. Sometimes there's an action movie that you can watch and of course there's dumb ones like you can put any dumb silly action. Movie that's digestible on there. But gladiators like an epic and I couldn't imagine watching an epic scale movie historical epic type movie like this over and over again but gladiator. I have like I remember. I was in a Latin class in high school and the teacher didn't care at all about teaching and would be like We're GONNA watch gladiator. Nice it's like we're gonNA teach you about gladiator classes and long enough to watch all gladiator. Come back the next time says. When do we stop and then you go? I think it was what he was fighting the goals. Which is like the first fifteen minutes of the movie go? Okay you'd start there wouldn't finish and then you'd you'd end up watching gladiator again and again. I watch gladiator in two different classes in high school. That's pretty good But yeah it's just like I just think it's so digestible when you think about some of the other movies in this genre it's like exodus gods and kings and like like these big scale historical drama pieces and stuff just didn't none of them. None of them are is fun is gladiator is in my opinion. It's a dense movie. It's also covers a lot of ground here. there's not a lot of misunderstandings two and half hours pilates two and a half hours but like kind of like we're saying about some of those other movies it like has several start. It's like okay. Well there's the beginning part of the movie Where he's he's soldier but then there's the part where he's training and then there's the part where he's leaving rebellion and like it so there's all these like restarts and stuff. Yeah I honest I still think this is one of walking penises best performances and I feel like it's a role that you would never see him again. Oh Yeah Russell. Crowe no keep Russell Crowe. I'll never liked this ever again. Heartthrob Sexy Action Lead Caesar Cut. I've never seen this movie. It's real good yeah. He didn't joy in a lot is like I'm going to say that a lot about some of the films early. It's okay I mean if you ever wondered we're doomed got his mask from. You should watch glad I will watch a lot of these movies. I'm sure but yeah no. I Love Gladiator. It's pretty it's weird because it was one of one best picture and like people in hindsight were like really gladiator. And I'm like yeah because it's just because it's like a popcorn action movie doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the acclaim. It

"Didn't would i. I knew the seamless knee. But I had no idea they were father and son Barest clearly to you. Well sure we've even talked about this before. Maybe my memory is horrible. That's probably what it is. I've probably family learn this like seven times in forgotten it every but yeah I I totally new that I saw you too. I think it's great. They're both so great. I love them on his amazing acting. Attorney okay so that's it for me for fun facts. I don't know who is If you found anything any tidbits that were worth mentioning. No I didn't find any fun. Facts either. The only thing was how the Coen brothers others were skeptical about releasing it on net flicks. I because it had like a very short released relief in theaters. Nick it was only Elliott New York and probably just tuning terrified for the Oscars awards where it had like a theatrical release if I think it was just those two cities and then it was mainly released on net flicks and these seem to have like there were a couple of interviews but I was reading that they had done and they were initially really skeptical about releasing it on Netflix because they kind of belong to that group. That's that's snobby group of filmmakers who think that net flicks is not viable. Enough is not sort of important enough but seems to be an ongoing debate. Now with filmmakers They said that they kind of had to get over that stumbling block well. I was surprised because the COEN brothers. I would not have guessed that they would release a movie on Netflix. Good for them. I think you know from a filmmakers perspective. When you're releasing something on net flicks you're going to reach a much larger audience? Obviously I'm sure this movie has gotten a lot more attention on net afflicts than it would have if it had only had a theatrical release. I totally agree so I think from that perspective. I think it certainly certainly benefits filmmakers. Because if you're making a film I mean you want to reach an audience. You want people to see. It is strange. Yeah okay so the moving onto the ratings the ratings for this this movie on. IMDB the critic ratings were seventy nine percent from forty eight reviews and then on rotten tomatoes. It got a ninety one percent. Yeah I did very well critically. Yeah I mean seventy-nine is great and already but ninety one that's surprise me. That felt too high. Hi I didn't hate this movie or anything but compared to maybe just compared to the aspects that I like in other Coen brothers movies movies this was lacking all of the joy. I guess so. Yeah but the COEN brothers. They tend to be critical darling constrain. Well sure yeah. That's not surprising to me. Means they're always critic fluff their work. Yeah I guess so. So maybe that's what it is. Maybe they reached a point where like a critic doesn't WanNa Pan Coen brothers movie who actually. I'm just curious Janet. Would you recommend this movie to anybody. I would recommend it to someone who I thought would enjoy this type of film or are you know. Obviously if you're a fan of the Cohen Brothers obviously you're probably going to enjoy it or you're probably leask linked to take the time to watch it. I don't know that it would necessarily be something that I would be like. Hey you have to watch this but I guess you know if you like this type of Sean if you enjoy films though the old West Yeah sure I'd recommend it. Okay all right well. Best original song. And they'll be performing it on the Academy Awards show that you could find that in the Balata BUSTER Scruggs, I believe is the name of that movie. I think it's on Netflix. See Oscar nominees online this weekend

"For six bucks this weekend. You can catch up with Oscar nominated films like stars born bohemian rhapsody and green book on TV the online streaming services. It's the pre-oscar addition of talking tech, I'm Jefferson Graham with USA, basically, every movie that you might wanna see that's nominated for best picture is online you'll have to pay, but it is online. But I you will have to dive into an odd variety of different video formats and device rules, and you better watch past. If you're not familiar with watching video on demand, you pay around six dollars in you, only get forty eight hours to start the movie and finish it. So if you're the type who likes to stretch out that viewing you are out of luck. Most of the movies are available on demand via YouTube Amazon prime video Buddhu fandango now and Google play. Now, the Oscar ceremony will air Sunday on ABC beginning at eight p m e. T five PM, and it's also available on the ABC app or cable alternative services, like YouTube, TV direct TV now and sling TV, let's look at what's available on the major services net. Flicks has four of the Oscar nominated films available to members without paying an additional fee. Roma. Black Panther, the ballot of BUSTER Scruggs and the incredible to Amazon video which is the chief streaming rival to Netflix has none of the twenty nineteen Academy Award contenders. Available for streaming to members of its one hundred and nineteen dollars a year. Prime service yet Cold War, which is up for best. Foreign film will be on the service beginning March twenty second. Amazon does however have many of the top nominated films for it fee. The going rate is six bucks for many the contenders. But some are even more expensive Amazon charges twenty dollars to watch animation nominee. Ralph breaks the internet, but has. First reformed, which is with Ethan Hawke, and it's up for best original screenplay, and you can see it for just ninety nine cents. Look out for really weird rules Baheen rhapsody, for instance, is available in HD on YouTube. However, if you'd like to see the story of the rock band, Queen and four K ultra high definition, you don't have a lot of choices you'll need to be watching on recent Sony or Samsung, four K TV's or you will need to spring for Google's under the radar seventy dollars chrome cast ultra streaming device and watch it that way the ultra connects to the TV and asks you to watch the smartphone app to cast the movie wirelessly to the TV voodoo the service on by WalMart offers films in HD HD X, which is slightly higher resolution and ultra high definition for K. But I'm voodoo a star is born is available in just HD X while bohemian rhapsody streams in HD HD X in USD offer six dollars. Fandango? Now the service from the company that sells online tickets does offer a star is born in four K as does apple. But only if you own the apple TV for K hundred eighty dollars setup box the model that cost thirty dollars more than the entry level, apple TV. If you watch the film on your iphone, ipad, ten eighty p HD finally on Amazon, which has tons of movies of able for video on demand stars burns not there. However, it does offer Oscar-nominated films at various prices are BG the documentary about supreme court Justice, Ruth, Bader Ginsburg is three dollars the wife with best actress nominee, Glenn Close is five bucks and best picture nominee the favourite fifteen dollars. Now, I don't mind paying to watch the films, especially when the fees are so much more reasonable than what's being charged at the theaters. But these uses rules are right for changing. How about one rule on all the services? Do you think that'd be kinda cool? Happy viewing good luck. Oscar winners, a special treat for talking tech fans. Check out my at Jefferson Graham YouTube channel I did a video this week about Wittig grape photos in classic Hollywood locations from LA La Land singing in the rain to the dark. Knight rises. I think you'll get a kick out of it these watch. And let me know what you think you can leave a comment on my YouTube channel, you could find me on Twitter where I'm at Jefferson Graham, don't forget to subscribe, the talking tech wherever you listen to online audio police favorite us on Stitcher, which helps more people find the show and his always. Thanks, everyone for listening.

Oscar nominations 2019 predictions: From A Star is Born to Roma

"Eight. I saw green book most recently, which I thought was great that may end up being my pick to to win the best picture. You've seen all best picture movies except for Roma. So you've got Black Panther black klansman bohemian rhapsody, by the way, Adam Lambert and Queen are going to perform Sunday, that'd be cool. That'll be really lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper performing. Which will also be cool. You really cool the favorite green book Romo rumour, aroma. Tony Romo model a star is born and vice. And who you picking unpicking green book to win because I think it made you feel the best and it was well done a period piece based on a true story, Rome. I think is getting a lot of a lot of buzz too. But maybe the director Affonso who also I think one best picture for gravity in our best director in two thousand thirteen for gravity Black Panther, which I know dragon scene for sure is definitely the best of all the marvel movies ever made. And it's interesting because it was such a big deal about their cast being all black the director and writer Ryan Kugler African American and so I'm surprised that he wasn't nominated for best director as well, Spike, Lee. This is his fifth nomination for best director. He's never one. But I'm picking green book to win that wouldn't be surprised if Roma does I loved bohemian rhapsody. But you remember when it came out, and we talked about they took some liberties with the story joke that Freddie Mercury doesn't die of aids in the movie because I remember making that joke. They changed a bunch of stuff around in that movie. Why did you read the bio and Freddie Mercury? I talked to friends that have seen it the no a lot more about Queen and the timetable with how the movie plays out and how he got in the band and stuff, but it's an entertaining movie. What's the best movie you've seen this year because I'm picking green book to win? I haven't seen any of them, by the way. So I got nothing. Oh. Yeah. Set a best picture you haven't seen Black Panther either. No. But are you a superhero movie guy? No, not at all. No. I I haven't seen any of those. I'm gonna say that I I like bohemian rhapsody a lot and I'm not a huge Queen fan. But I really liked it. But I'm gonna go with the stars four stars born it was it was really really I think the biggest reason reasonable win. Cathy, is that it's already been this is the fourth. They've done this story. I know that they've tweaked it. I didn't lady Gaga is gonna pull the upset for best actress, I hope so I you know, it really really made me like lady Gaga put her in a total different category fro. Yes. She's fantastic. A great singer. But you know, I I like her music, but I never put her like on this pedestal you've tried to act not try you weren't actor try. That's a bit of a stretch. But yeah, but the point is imagine the first real you ever play you get nominated for an Oscar, and I get that she's playing a struggling musician, and she can easily identify with that and go back to what it took to get discovered and all of that. And and you know, toiling in nothing jobs hoping for that break, but to execute that onscreen, and she was she was the best part of the movie by far Bradley Cooper is really good. But I hope she wins. Even though Glenn Close, it's seven nation. She's never one. So she could be a lifetime achievement kind of winner. If you will she's phenomenally talented, she s I don't know. But I liked Ramey. Malik as I think he's going to go. I mean, he did a great impersonation. So let's go actor in a leading role, you got Christian bale? Vice Bradley Cooper, a star is born Willem Defoe at eternity gate. Remmy Romney Malik bohemian rhapsody Vigo Mortenson green book, jussie smollet for the Chicago hope. Very funny. Avi next next year. He'll get one for that bright. Yeah. Like when Golden Globes. Yeah. So that it plus you're combining acting and singing did he really singing. Oh, okay. So we he was acting like a cigarette. Huber really saying. Yeah, he did having Adam Lambert seeing at the goal K, so okay. And at the Oscars, maybe Bradley Cooper, then because he's singing and acting and this is any directed it. This is Bradley Cooper's forced nomination as an actor, and he's never won Christian bale. One once Willem Dafoe. This is his fifth nomination. He's never won. And I don't I know Vigo Mortenson hasn't won. And certainly Rami Malik first nomination. Still picking me Malik to win. I thought he was great. Actress in a leading role you have low LIZA appereciation from Roma. You have Glenn Close. Everybody knows here from the wife Livia Coleman from the favorite lady. Gaga stars born Melissa McCarthy, can you ever forgive him in a more serious turn not a not a comedic role. She's awesome. The best lady Gaga for that. I think it's upset Glenn Close as the heavy favorite. But I'm I'm pulling a lady Gaga upset as my pick feel like Glenn Close because she's been around. So long performance is great. And then maybe it's like her turn kind of thing. Maybe and, but they did it lady Gaga's gonna keep acting and have another shot seems far-fetched at this point. Right. So is leader thirty. So, but how come Bradley Cooper, gene, get a directing because he did for American sniper? So that's about those are the biggies right there. Yeah. Supporting actor and actress, Marcia Lee who is in green book, I bet you. He wins a second. You don't want to talk about making hairstyling best animated feature. Incredible to come on. I don't know about best editing. The spider verse hairstyling best song song about best picture. Or did. We did that already songs. Best. The song. Okay. What are your choices? I don't see all the stars Black Panther. I'll fight RV g the place where lost things go. Mary. Poppins returns. Shallow. A star is born when a cowboy change Spurs for wings, the ballot BUSTER Scruggs, and that's different from original score original scores of music throughout the movie right songs. I think it'll be almost impossible. For lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper not to win. I think they win. Okay. We're we're out of time. I'll watch part of it. Yeah. It's like a four hour show. Four hours. It's hard to it gets here. It's one of my favorite my favorite nights of the year. I used to always do with my mom. That guy picks. I'm that guy. I have a couple of friends getting together to watch the show. I get it. I mean, if you watch I haven't seen all the movies. I wait to watch him on the Denver Broncos play. But Lewis was like that's Adam Lambert. Because I knew I just didn't know where he was. And you know, what I like about you and your better half other half the other part of your Mary, Louis, Louis Louis, he you, and he do so much together, you watch all this talk about is very cool anyway, so the bohemian rhapsody movie and all of that stuff and all the awards bohemian rhapsody up for five Oscars. Wow. Best picture sound editing sound mixing and film editing from me Malik nominated for best actor performance as Freddie. Mercury kademi did not elaborate on how it planned to feature the Queen performance. But there've been some rumors earlier in the month about the group. Whether or not they could come to the show, and they were okay. They said after an open the show or are they okay? Well, there's no Oscar there's no big opening act. So kind of makes sense any good way to get attention. Yeah ceremony. Also, featuring guy guy, Bradley Cooper, doing shallow from stars born either original song nominee performances, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings doing when a cowboy trades is I for wings from the ballot of BUSTER Scruggs, Jennifer Hudson sing Al fight from the RPG documentary Bette midler singing, the place where lost things go from Mary Poppins. Disney about to take all that stuff off net flex and they're going to ramble a FOX's stuff as well, which that means that they'll they'll be able to keep things like stalls foams exclusively on that platform on your moving into a world where instead of the old thing where you pay your cable company, or the UK paid sky or something and you everything through that. You're now going to have lots and lots of little means of the lots and lots of different streaming service. Yeah. Well, we're going to see which big fish eats, the bigger fish. I mean, it is actually it's been mooted that apple will eventually by net flicks. Which I think is very interesting, which you're probably the loose change in its pocket. Well, quite possibly, but what a big pocket, but when you say, oh, the cable and cable gave us everything. I want to see. No, it didn't it gave us what they wanted us to see we have a lot more choice. Now granted it's quite silo because we have to go. I mean, if you I'm jumping around between right now, I'm jumping around between Amazon prime and Netflix about what I want. But there is still. And this is the reason why we still have privacy. There are still things that we wanna see that it aren't available anywhere. So we have to go and bit towards which still are still running. And we wanna see I'm going to just to grumpy old man arguments against against this. What I'm saying, Don Netflix, so reliable on the one hand is a such a thing as too much choice. I can spend an hour and halls scrolling through net flakes looking for the thing. I oh that. Oh, no. But that looks even better on then it's too late start watching anything. Anyway. Yes. Yes. I'm county. What television has shown in the way, it's reacted. Is that people won't shed experiences? They want to come together much. So it's big event shows talent shows Dan shows will begin sports events that still draw in Voss numbers of people people do want to share an experience in a way that you come see me on social media. Well, I suppose, but also people there is that sense. Isn't there sing together? And watching something talking about it the next day. Did you see that thing? Water cooler moments. Yeah. Of course, of course, there is that. And this is why you have social media. Why you have critics like me you will. This is really good like BUSTER Scruggs if you haven't seen it in a Netflix. But Netflix you do run out. I have run out of films to see. And I and I don't wanna binge and all these Ted Bundy I watched sort of in one sitting. So I think it's going to open things up people are still going to want to go to the cinema. They're still gonna wanna watch things at the fringe. They're still gonna want to talk about things at work. But now we've got. More of it. And also people will be more discerning. But there isn't argument against too much choice. And I'm sure that criterion will not release everything at once not it out. I say that, you know, the some of Oman argument I have a net flicks. "You got spider verse, which is total superhero moving it is you have all these different kinds of movies in there. And then Ralph breaks internet, which I did not see I didn't see any good. I mean, I I like the first record off moving. Yeah. No. I think that's a weird category. It's almost like it's also like kind of unfair to compare all those movies just because they're animated they're movies. They're all different kinds of movies. That's weird. And then BUSTER Scruggs got a few nam really got nominated for screenplay. And then I think what Tim Blake Nelson got nominated for that song. Just kinda fun the one from the beginning. Yeah. Yeah. And then one more I can't remember the other one. I'm just bombed. My main gripe is that first reformed only God. I think original screenplay by Paul Schrader. Ethan Hawke should have totally been nominated that one kind of didn't really make a big splash. Like, I I remember seeing something about it a long time ago. Like, I think it was a trailer before like an art movie. Like, I kind of a smaller. Indie theater, and I never really heard much about. And I kind of forgot about it. And then you mentioned, oh, I remember thinking interested once again, it didn't get the big marketing. Plus, right. Yeah. Because it's dark dark af everyone I need to see. I don't want to hear anything about it. I'm very intrigued. I'm not going to say, it's light. Okay. Cool. I'm gonna you're totally confused now. All right. Good saw glass yesterday or two days ago to not care for it. I Reggie thing. Yeah. Yeah. You felt like does it does it feel maybe like that movie split with successful? And that he just kinda shove this one out to kind of like put a bow on the whole trilogy that maybe it certainly like if I'm thinking of unbreakable, which I did like in split, which was okay and bringing those worlds together, which I think is a pretty cool idea. It should have been way better than this. And just what happened literally what happened in the movie, it should have been better. Yeah. This is my mini review. I just I don't know man, it just reeks of like producer meddling in like someone being like, you gotta push this out and success of the split was kind of a sleeper hit. And I think it, you know, people started like believing an m night again because he's had a couple of good ones. You know after so many bad ones. That was like after he just kind of wanted to like, let's keep my name out of a little. It's the twist Lewis. Yep. The twist went. When. Let me tell you about Pete who loved hockey and always wanted to play in the NHL Pete play since he was three and begged his mom to let him stay on the ice. "It wasn't meant like one of those things where there's like four or five different chapters with I think there is some sort of dug lime indirect that movie. Let's Saryu you talk and we'll we'll Google. No. I don't know. I mean, it's it's an interesting it it does feel as go even a little bit. I'm sorry about us for that. Go on sorry. I mean, I guess if feels like a movie to be because it's clearly all of these movies all these short. Homes are coined by their short films in their their unified by like, the the Derek to'real sensibilities the dialogue, which is just gorgeous. I just love the writing of I always have even when I was like, you know, a teenager the Hudsucker proxy was one of my favorites. Just the way people talk the superman. You know, the the John Mahoney is like the gruff newspaper editor and was as Jennifer Jason Leigh is just like, you know, she's the fast talking reporter. And she's just rattling off words, you know, half of which I didn't understand what I was thirteen. But I've just like who've rights like this. And it's like the music is great. And I think there there really is a compositional nudity to the whole thing. And so it doesn't feel like six it. It doesn't feel like an adult g of six short films that are just like Baid by six different directors that happened to share a theme active link. It's it feels like it. It all is sixty. Takes on almost the same femur. But I'm don't ask me to articulate exactly what that theme is. We still got a ways to go this podcast. So if we were to love actually BUSTER Scruggs, and if we were to think, okay, we're uncomfortable with the fact that this movie is vignettes and doesn't have everybody at the end meet each other, right? There's a lot of common themes throughout the different segments. And a lot of details that show up between the common segments. But but let's hypothesize that at the end in the stagecoach. It's you've got the stage. Coach you've got the the trapper the sort of old wilderness guy who seems to have not been part of society at all. And he's been kind of out in the wilderness. Right. You've got the sophisticated woman, but not particularly necessarily wealthy women who is part of the was Gitonga movement. The whole sort of like, American intellectual religious kind of lecture circuit kind of pre Ted talk. Thing. And she talks about the way that people ought to live. And then you've got the flamboyant guy who talks about how you shouldn't play a hand of cards. That's four another man. It's not hard to imagine that scene play out with Tom waits Zoe Kazan and bust, and I just say BUSTER Scruggs because he still inhabited the character was that actor's name here. Tim Blake Nelson Nelson, by the Yeah. way. The way and like one of the movies, most obvious sort of repetitions Tim Blake Nelson. He sits down at the at the poker table, and the the rest of the guys say that he can play only if he plays somebody else's hand. And it turns out to be the deadman's handwrite. It's the famous hand that Billy the kid was playing which is what like Ason and eat refuses to play. And they say yes to play. It's and he's like, no you can't literally. It's exactly what the Frenchman is saying at the end that nobody could compel anybody to play another man's hand. So yeah, exactly it, absolutely. Could be BUSTER Scruggs as well. They'll hook Hitchcock believe say love, actually. Well, actually, but yeah. But but they don't do that..

And the star is born those are the two that are. Yeah. They're on the Interscope label both of them and people are perceiving it as a favoritism toward one record company. Although the two films are from different studios decision likely comes down to their massive popularity dwarfing the rest of the field. But if that's what it's going to be it's massive popularity versus then we're back to having the Oscar for the most popular movie, which they talked about having and then. We have we just. It's such a thank you guys for farting around with us out there in podcast. That's right beans, everyone. All right. We're going to start off this week mister knoll with. Well. Here's what we do. I've asked everyone in social studies and go ahead and queue up the social studies Q there, Mr. Ramsey. Social. All right. We're ready for social studies asked everyone. Hey, I'd love to hear any movie related things happen over the holidays. And I said anything really from seeing a great film to a weird awesome movie experience in the theater to forcing your parents to watch a movie that they hated or fell asleep too. That's always fun over the holidays this mom. You gotta see it. I've been doing well with my mom and making her watch movies. She always fights me on it up front. Yeah. 'cause he's not really a movie person. But I usually pick something that I really think she's going to connect with in some way, usually write. I love it. No. She really loved BUSTER Scruggs, and that made me so happy because I enjoyed it so much too. And it's nice to bond with my mom because sometimes we you know, we have we were at odds at times. Well, that's called having a parent. Indeed, everyone is at odds with their parents at some point or another, right? Very true. All right. We're going to start this one off with Daryl Murphy, and he says my wife was away from just after Christmas two just after new year. And my kids are adults now doing their own thing, usually so I went to see spider verse on my own the island front of me young couple came in with a daughter who looked about ten. She was in a wheelchair. Dad, pick your up put her into theater seat and mom tucked a blanket over her legs. And then he went and got the mall snacks about two hours later. The little girl is vibrating with joy and bliss and had so many things to tell her mom and dad about what she'd seen that is wonderful very very sweet story. I want to see that movie know, everyone says spiders is great. Great great. Oh, yeah. It's fantastic. You saw love it. Love it. Yes. With my girlfriend and the kiddo and everyone loved it for different reasons. There's something in it for everyone because it's. Got it mixes and matches animation styles in this really frenetic incredible way. We're it'll be like an edit and like you'll see it flash from like anime style to like CGI to hand-drawn and then back it's really like psychedelic in that way. And it's also the story is super Triggs. It's all about like multi verse with different Spiderman in different universes all kind of coming together. It's the story that on paper just seem like what the fuck. How did you even pitch this? How did you come up with this? But it works, and it's got heart. And it's funny. Like, John Mullany does the voice of spider pig. Oh, really? It's so good. It's so good. And I can't wait. A I didn't even know much about it. And then when it came out, I was like, okay. But every like people say, it's the best Spiderman movie, it just it's because of that heart. Yeah. And it it just kind of like it retreads the Spiderman origin story, and it's very self aware. So it kind of keeps doing it and doubling back on itself, and it's very meta in like a really clever way and not like. Over heavy-handed kind of knowing way out. God, it's good Chuck. You'd like it a lot. I'm all in everyone..

"Where they're gonna go. You have no idea what they're going do with inside the last one. It's almost gothic though that carriage ride as creepy and feels like something that Edgar Allan Poe could read. So I kind of felt like the the first chapter felt like the end of a movie whereas the last chapter felt like the beginning of one oh, two different movies. And they play a lot with like circle imagery, not just in this movie. But in a lot of their movies. This is a Netflix, and it's called the ballot of BUSTER Scruggs, that's my recommendation this week where if you got anything for us. Oh. Come back to me. Well, you gave us the song. How about you? Yeah. I finally feel like I have something to, you know, something theatrical to actually provide to the segment I watched movie it is in the newest movie came cannot in two thousand sixteen. I'm sure Griffey side arrival with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Whitaker. I liked it. I didn't love it. But I did like it. I thought the plot was good. I definitely I felt like you could really relate to the whole idea of aliens coming down, and they show their their method of of communication, and then it just goes viral. You know, I see like internet means of circle things I talking to my girlfriend, and this is what she replies. No one understands something like that. No. I just kind of felt like if this were to happen something like that. I enjoyed it though. I thought that was so clever. I mean, how would we talked aliens if they came here, they take say take us to your leader? And then you had the musical sort of language that you had for me and close encounters of the third kind would be, you know, light or music, which is kind of universal. But this language, I forget what they called it. But I just thought it was so fascinating. And it's kind of an aspect that no one's ever gone down with scifi movies of you know, what will we do when aliens get here and just assume that everyone talks the same, you know, something no one ever really went into it, very different territory. Also like one of our texters for recommending Kanye west next child wild west nice. I like that a lot or maybe in the middle name wild wild wild west. You put it in my head. And I'm extremely partial to BUSTER Scruggs, Wes. Arrival. I remember came out like the week of or the week after the election. And.

It's very rivaling. I didn't mean for it to this way. But apparently all I did was watch Buchan comic book movies this year. So. A set aside from the comic book movies favorite movies. I saw this year. Won't you be my neighbor? The Fred Rogers documentary. Also, I really enjoyed Chappaquiddick. I love blockers. I thought John CENA was absolutely fantastic end. The dude has very committee chops I loved I Tanya, I love the ballot of BUSTER Scruggs it immediately became man. Here's the deal would about a bus or scripts is that like over the Dow is my favorite Coen brothers movie. An like the Bosque has always been number two. But like the more I watched Balata BUSTER Scruggs, it might be about to take over both of them manage fucking so good. If you haven't watched it, please give net flicks. Check at the ballot. A BUSTER Scruggs humble, brag our buddy T-Bone as he does. With all the Coen brothers movies. Did the music for that. Which is another reason. That's fantastic. Robin Williams, come inside my mind. I absolutely loved that movie. Also enjoyed that's not a superhero movie game night. I thought game night. Was the prize comedy of the year? It's not that. I thought it would be bad at the cast is Jason Bateman. Rachel mcadams. I can't off the top of my head. I can't remember anybody else right now. But like I thought well, this'll be serviceable it'll be fine. It was fucking hilarious. It's one of my favorite comedies that. I've seen game. Not is fantastic. Here's here's the real. Here's the real movies that the show enjoyed this year. Black Panthers Spiderman homecoming Infinity war incredible to wreck it Ralph to a solo ant man in the wasp dead poll too. And the reason I actually went to see this tonight because I knew it'd be talking about my favorite movies of two thousand eighteen and I had this feeling that this was going to end up being my favorite one. And I was correct Spiderman into the spider Vars is unlike anything I have ever seen before in my life. I cannot suggested enough. I don't wanna say anything about it because I'm afraid that I'll just get too giddy and I'll give shit away. It's unbelievable. I was going to say that it's like the citizen Kane of superhero movies. But honestly for me, it might just be citizen. Kane it's unbelievable as the best movie of two thousand eighteen and you should fucking go say, those are my favorite movies, and here, we're. Gonna do my favorite albums just off the top of my head John career forgiveness. Unbelievable Casey must graves last album TI's last album, American aquarium thinks change J. "We'll probably see some stuff pretty soon for triple frontier. And then like Perry mentioned, maybe just whatever movie comes out around this time next year could be the Irish some just so easy for a high concept leg bird box to take catch on like wildfire that kind of vibe where you're talking about it. And you're telling everybody about it. It's like even though BUSTER Scruggs had that top spot for however long. It did. Thus described his great I love almost every single segment in that. But there is no way that's going to have kind of the spreading like the creatures in the movie. It's it's like that. It's not going to catch on quite the same way. I have that flexibly. Like, I said I like when I say it did nothing you're like, oh, you just hung out. I literally did nothing like not even watch art. So if you guys are telling me, hey, Mark, you got we're gonna give you two hours. So you can either watch bird box or you can watch fan or snatch the whack near episode, which one am I doing fan of obviously, Sandra Bullock thought the bird box trailers really impressive. I'm big black mirror fan too. So which way am I going? I think he'd I think you should probably watch bender snatch. I because I don't want any of its spoiled for you. Yeah. You don't want any of that spoiled, but I did like bird box. I gave it a positive review. And I think the best way I would say whether to recommend it or not is if the premise intrigues you, and if you like the trailer, you should probably watch it are you going to be active on social media. That's what I would say. You mean like during the two right afterwards. Oh, right afterwards. Because then maybe because I would say Bander snatches the choice if you're going to be active on social media 'cause everybody's talking about worked or didn't. Okay. Choose your own adventure. There's a novelty to that a unique novelty to that that would be fun to watch for the first. So that's what I would recommend because you can always watch. This you've seen post apocalyptic movies before was like banner Sanders, essentially, choose your own adventure type show. This is fantastic for people who remember clue having like five different endings, depending on the theater, you went to kind of has that same kind of vibe. Just the room or have chat certain theatres had different endings to the movie than other theaters. Yeah. Of course. Yeah. Did you think bender snatch worked? Yes. But against all my impulses. I thought it worked. I I was I was like this. Eventually I was like. Oh, okay. All right. Cool. All right. Good. You got me. So yeah. I would definitely recommend that very good. Well, Twitter's and let us know which one you're going to check out at the end of this episode. We're going to save some time for your Twitter questions. You can tweet.

"Hey, listen. Not with me nerds this toy from talk nerdy to me bringing you all the nerdy news that is fit to know on this Thursday, September, thirteenth. I'll kick right off with ugly dolls on remember those those fitting name. They were very, very ugly dolls, real popular back in early two, thousands, they are getting their own TV share are actually they're getting their own movie that will be followed by TV series. The movies have Wanda Sykes and gave her a glaciologist is to the main voice actors. They're also have Kelly, Clarkson, Nick, Jonas impeccable. So the voice town on this thing is just crazy. So many popular voice actors. I shouldn't say it was a popular people to be the voices on these things. Ugly dolls is supposed to come out daters on may tenth of twenty nineteen. I know I will say any date for the series TV series says it's in production. There are two kids animated series. So here we go going to be on the premium streaming service who. Lou. By Hasbro has rose getting into supporting other toys through movies and TV series. So you'll get to hear Wanda Sykes. Gabriel glaciologist being voices on ugly dolls. The Coen brothers. If you're big fan of Cohen, brothers and I, I am. They have a new project out their ballot. BUSTER Scruggs is kinda stranger is going to be out in theaters, but it's also on the member sixteenth. It's also going to be on Netflix streaming services. Same time in the break it down into six different. Short stories. I guess the whole thing is a little over an hour, our little two hours long. I think two hours twelve minutes to be exact. So you got some big name actors in this also talking about James Franco burning Gleason, Liam Niessen, Clancy Brown, Stephen root. These are some really good actors and the Coen brothers. I love their stuff is their movies are always really Corky with interesting characters. So. November sixteenth will build new, select theaters or on Netflix. I think most people in the world probably have a Netflix account or they're using their friends account by this time. So everybody should be able to see this new Cohen, brothers project, the ballot of BUSTER Scruggs. All right. Warner Brothers tried to break the internet yesterday by. Teasing that can recap will might be out as superman. It was really cryptic. The stuff they posted even Henry Cavill was kind of cryptic in his post. He made a post with wearing the crypto Nghien lifting team shirt. Didn't say whether or not he was in or out his rep. Henry Cavill rep is saying, hey, the Cape is stillness closet. Take deaf or whatever you want it to mean doesn't defend, say one way or the other. If he is still going to be superman. So we will see, hopefully sometime today they're gonna. Let us know is he end is the out and if he's out, are they going to start replacing the other Justice league characters? I, I would. I would imagine Gail does probably end up for the long haul, but we will find Henry Cavill. All he said was today was exciting with the hashtag superman. So we may see a new superman. We may not. We don't know. They have not have not told us one way or the other yet they're just leaving. I don't know if they're doing this to gain interest in superman, or if they're just shy test the waters to see people care one way or the other Warner Brothers. Stop leaving us on the line. Let us know one way or the other. Okay. I've been telling you guys about these streaming services, the DC universe streaming app. It went live a few few days early. And I'm looking at some of the, you know what people have said about overall, it's they. They've been pretty happy with from what I can tell. It's going to be seven, nine nine a month. They all their movies, cartoons and stuff like that is on there. It looks like they're still working on the comic book side. They have a lot of the complex up there, not all of them, but you know, they did launch a few days early. Maybe they're still working on that.

‘The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs’ Trailer: James Franco Hangs Out In Coen Bros’ Netflix Western Anthology

"New trailer on YouTube came out for a net flicks and follow g. movie written and directed by the Coen brothers. And it has a fucking great name. The ballot of BUSTER Scruggs just Elliott. I mean for pod that loves the name Busta for BUSTER. Scruggs is pretty close. That's great. What do you think about this when it's a six part in film. Tim, Blake, Nelson, Liam, and James. Franco's Zoe Kazan there. Tom waits in it. A lot of random people in it again and follow film. There's six different chapters are saying, now this is a Netflix movie. I'm excited for it premiered in Venice to Venice film festival, actually don't know how it did. I gotta pull it up, but what did you think about the trailer? Yeah. Anything the Cohen, brothers do. I'm immediately excited for. I don't even have to watch the trailer, although I don't think my film criticism is to the point where I can properly judge the Coen brothers in the same way. A lot of people do with a lot of nuance and and good take on it. I will say BUSTER Scruggs is the perfect Cohen, brothers name for that. You know, evoke ation of Americana net that Cohen, brothers type role. So yeah, anthologies, they're big right now. Aren't they like rhyme Irvy's been doing a lot of anthologies. On the on the FX channel. What would some of his projects? And they're having a moment. Maybe the Coen brothers will take it into high gear.
