Jon Hansen in four Bob Surat on this Wednesday morning, the penultimate day of 2020 and the width of the New Year with the post holiday season. Of course, there's someone trying to make a buck off you and here to stop that. Steve Burn us from the better business Bureau, Steve It's been a while since we chatted. It's good to hear from you again. Could hear from you, John as well. How are you doing really? Well, doing really well. Hope you're ready for a happy new year. And ah lot of people, of course, getting gift cards for the holiday season, some things to watch out for them. You would give cars. People try to unload them and what happens there's a marketplace for them and there's organizations out there who will take your car and sell it for you, But we have some concerns with some companies, and we have one out of Texas actually just racked up 2000 complaints about 100 in our area. Basically, the consumers are alleging that they're not getting the money that was promised after they sold the card, or they bought a car from this company didn't get them. There was no money on the card as well. So the better business Bureau strongly suggest you try to sell the gift cards yourself if you want to use them to sell to your friends and family members instead of going to a third party site. Then there's some scams out there because they have to verify the account before they buy it from you so that you have to give him all the numbers and guess what if they have all the numbers John is, you know they can catch the car pretty quickly Don't need the physical cards will be very careful. If you got one for Christmas. Make sure you use it. Don't put it in the drawer because about 6% of gift cards and that never use and that's really a high number. Yeah, So do you. You might have just mentioned this Sari is. Does your website ELISA list like which sites you trust for doing gift card online, Or do you not trust any of them Now we do have some companies that are good, So you have to check with the better business. We're doing any business with them, especially the bad ones, So they have an F rating so that we have those reports listed and for consumers to read ahead of time. Now I live for the instagram like a lot of folks these days. I do it for the Graham. I do it for the likes is the kids say, like farming. What is that? Like families. The new thing is coming up there, really? And you know for people that don't understand it. It's basically where the scammer tries to, you know, make you put some words and encouragement and some pictures that you like the item that you like to post and all of a sudden that that change the the like, are the content rather Something that is different. So, basically, they're just trying to get you know, like the post and they guarantee you or they promise you that you could win $500. You know, you know, media giveaway promoting, you know, fifth Facebook or Instagram. And basically what happens is that you like it because you want to win this prize, but there's no prize to win and they get you to like it and then basic. What happens? They switched the content later to something nefarious where you know they can get people that click on because a lot of 10,000 people liked. It must be great. Right. So if anybody problems used to like something to offer terms of a payment or winning something Don't do it. Yeah, I was just gonna say the likes add an air of legitimacy to what they're doing Exactly if you have 20,000 lights, something like a really good offer. Like when a $5 gift card People don't like it and post a comment on it. And guess what? You know when we get 30,000 like they changed the content. The 20 thing they want And there's the one about 20,000. People click this link or like that is gonna be good. So that's how this camera gets away with it. So be careful. Is anybody promising you something in return for liking something fake compromised accounts on the rise. It's increasing and just started right before the holidays with fake Amazon. You know, emails. They're not coming from Amazon in these companies are basically saying that they lacked your account. Answer suspicious activity and you need to do something quickly about it, or you're gonna be liable for it. And they kind of put the fear and you that you've got to do something quickly. You're not thinking and we call these companies up or, you know the number they provide or you click on the link. And guess what? That the scammer on the other end, Who's trying to ask you for your account number? Asking for information. They shouldn't be giving them. Amazon's not going to call you or email. You tell your counsel act, but we need your account number to get into your account. It just doesn't happen. But unfortunately, John, you know, most people don't realize that cholera deacon be spoofed a swell so you might get an email and you might get Ah, you know, call from allegedly Amazon when it's not Amazon. But there's other organizations that are doing this. The scammers are really touting on so Be very careful if you get in that somebody saying that your comments locked because that's usually not the case, Seabourn Ists, president and CEO of the better Business bureau, BBB dot organs, where you can get all these articles and find out more information. 'False alarm' between T-Mobile and Verizon shows how competitive 5G battle is
"Hour always on culture now depends on a working grid not just of electricity but of telecommunications and an Internet that not only never goes down but constantly speeds up efficiency is our subconscious mantra and that may be a big reason behind the hot water. All three major wireless carriers are in Verizon at and T. and T. mobile have all been promoting their new five G. wireless services heard about that each wants you to believe that their service is the fastest the most reliable hands down the best. Here's one of Reisen ads from last year at Verizon building the most powerful five G. Experience for America. That's why the NFL. Chose Verizon because they need their massive capacity of five G. With Ultra wideband, we're streaming streaming posting fans inexperienced five. Thirteen trouble in most cases, those claims can't be proved, and so the courts have banned each of these rivals from boasting about their prowess and from implying that the others are the lightweights of the wireless world witness verizon the ad I just shared with you was set in Gillette Stadium, home of the new Patriots, the company stopped running that ad last November. But that didn't stop at and T. from challenging verizon's use of the phrase most powerful to the division, the Better Business Bureau that rules on deceptive advertising cases. Why did not call the phrase into question essentially because the carriers have hardly rolled five g. out anywhere yet so it's impossible to prove one carriers mostly non existent five G. implementation is better than others. There were also questions about whether the ad was implying that the rollout was far more widespread and available to the average consumer than it was in May. The Review Board called the national advertising. Division were in a D agreed with a t and t and told verizon to using the term verizon appealed early this month they lost the said essentially consumers have no idea what most powerful means in this context the claim could not be substantiated. One it comes to making false claims don't assume that verizon is the worst offender. nope. The Empty Braggadocio is a game played by the entire industry. Go back through years in you'll see that at and T. got trouble claiming that its current four G. Network was by virtue of being fast virtually identical to five G. It even used the phrase five G. EVOLUTION TO DESCRIBE ITS FOUR G service a consumer looking for the fastest cell service could hardly be blamed for assuming that meant, they'd be using a five G. Network. Three years later, most of US still use four g networks the told at and T. to stop using the deceptive evolution phrase. At and Later agreed, and then there's t mobile, which isn't exactly honest either in late August, the NASD toll, t mobile to stop claiming that it's five G. services more reliable than the others verizon had challenged that claim t mobile said, it will appeal that decision but the Advertising Review Board also recommended that t mobile needed to stop running ads in which science guy bill nye claim that verizon's five G. coverage was barely broader than the average bus stop bench that according to industry publication fierce wireless. With a widespread deployment of five G. still some time off in the future. Why would every major wireless carrier use such inflated claims in a Word Mindshare? They want to attract and retain you as a customer. Are you more likely to stay with your current mobile carrier? If you feel pretty sure that the company will soon offer blazing fast five g service. Well maybe it's all about perception perception of what's here today and better yet perception about a speedy powerful future. That's almost hear these kinds of empty claims have a long long history in the advertising world from Telco Tonics beauty items to baby products. Advertisers repeatedly tried to stake out the territory of a- best. And rivals almost always challenge those fluffy bordering on dishonest claims. So next time you see a company claiming to be the strongest most powerful fastest or the best ask yourself. Where's the evidence chances are? There isn't any.
Coronavirus scams: the science of how to spot and deal with nuisance callers
"State officials and federal agencies warn of a new phone scam Callers pose as CO Vered 19 contact tracers. To try to get your personal information with us now via Skype to discuss this is reporter Julie Appleby of Kaiser Health News. Welcome. Thank you. So what does it sound like when you get a call from a fake contact Racer, you know, scammers air Very creative. So officials are kind of telling me that there's various scenarios, but one of them goes something like this. Your phone rings. And the person on the other end says they're calling you from your local health department to let you know that you've been in contact with someone who has Cove in 19. And the person might say, Hey, you need a covert test. So sounds legit. So far, right? But then they move in for the real objective, which is getting your credit card number or other payment information. You know, they might say something like, Hey, we need that to Bill you for sending you a test, for example. Basically, don't fall for that. Some scams also come in by text, and they ask you to click on a link. Do not click on the link. You know, I'm thinking about how most scams play on people's greed of their gullibility. This is especially offensive, I think, because it plays on people's fear in the pandemic or plays even on their public spiritedness. People want to do the right thing, and they're being taken advantage of right. That's exactly right and legitimate contact. Tracing is very important. It's It's one of the key things along with No masking and social distancing that the public health experts are hoping will slow the spread of the virus. So this is this is particularly insidious. How widespread is this? You know, we're hearing it from states across the country from Hawaii to Florida to Pennsylvania. There's a national warning out from the Federal Trade Commission and another from the better business Bureau. Some local neighborhood listservs I've seen and Facebook pages air also circulating a warning. So I'm thinking about the fact that I might really get a really call from a really contact Tracer. How can I tell the difference between the real person in the thick? Okay, so a legitimate contact Tracer does not ask for payment or seek any other financial information. So that's one way you could tell. Real tracers. Do not ask for your Social security number. They will not provide the name of the patient with whom you had contact and text from these contact. Tracers. Simply let you know to expect a phone call right? They don't contain a link. So if you do, get a phone call, do a little homework, asked for the person's name and their return phone number and say you will call them back. Then check with your local health department to confirm that this person is indeed doing contact tracing. That would be one way you could kind of counter that. And if you do get a call, don't be surprised. If a real contact tracer asks you to confirm your address or date of birth. They need this information because they don't want to give sensitive health information to the wrong person. So they're trying to confirm your identity. Real tracers air going also ask you for information on where you've been and who you've been in contact with during the days surrounding your diagnosis or exposure, And that's because they need that information. Track it and warn others of potential exposure. So a real contact racers should be somebody I could find whose identity I can confirm who may ask me for personal information, but if they start trying to get money out of me, that's that's the obvious signs. That's correct or any kind of financial information. That is an obvious sign.

Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration says it has received more than 1700 complaints about calls supposedly from IRS agents who claim they can speed up stimulus payments of scammers asked for personal information, saying that it will be used to expedite those payments. closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if "A little bit of background the Better Business Bureau. This is a Cording to their Wikipedia page. The Better Business Bureau founded in nineteen twelve is a private nonprofit organization whose self described mission is to focus on vanishing marketplace trust, it consists of one hundred six independently or incorporated, local BBB organizations in the United States and Canada coordinated under the council of Better Business Bureau 's in Arlington Virginia. They're not affiliated with any government agency. That's something you need to understand exactly too many. People think we are. And we're not I often say when I give talks to groups p people will say, well, I didn't get my money back, or you didn't get my complaint resolve because they use the business that wasn't very coming in all their complaint, where my tax dollars going, and I say, well, when you figure that out, please let us know because it's not going to so there are a lot of people who think that it's a myth that goes around, but we dispel that quickly the whole thing about the Better Business Bureau, is that it's a the businesses that qualify and get accepted to the Better Business Bureau. Meet our sandards. It's a voluntary thing and our whole our whole mission is to promote advertising, truth and advertising and to help consumers and businesses get problems resolved. If there are any on a voluntary basis without having. Ving to us court systems, right, government intervention. Now, if those things have to come into play later, great, but many types, that we have a very high complete resolution percentage with is in the eighty percent range, and so that's, that's a really good. That's a really good thing for people to know because it doesn't cost you anything the businesses that belong to the Better Business Bureau. They haven't investment fee that allows them to advertise our marks and to use our services, and we connect them with customers. And we try to keep the money in our communities to say strong, and not lose them to con artists that are out there every day. That's good thing. Devoid bias that BBV's policy is to refrain from recommending or endorsing any specific business, so you're not in the business of endorsing other businesses, we will state that we recommend you use BBB credited businesses, simply because they have met our standards. They have agreed to uphold ethical business practices. Resolve customer, complaints, if they can't or make a good faith effort to do that. But we do rate businesses whether or not, they belong to the BBB on the same scale, everybody gets letter grade ratings using the same standards, weather or not. They belong that way, it starts out with a level playing field, although we.

"Better Business Bureau, if you'd like to find out more about joining the team, we certainly encourage you to check out the website oak, harvest, F, G dot com. Stands for financial group oak harvest f G dot com. So be talking a little bit of an assortment of items. We're gonna talk a little market volatility. We're gonna talk about interest rates and inflation, they kind of seem to be tied together. And there were to talk about maybe some tax planning strategies that coming up at this time of the year, kind of individual tax planning strategies or to get into all of that today on the program before we do. Troy, welcome. How are you doing great? Got a great show here. I'm really excited for the tax strategies part of the show today. People are saving tens of thousands of dollars with this new tax law. So you wanna make sure you're taking income from the right accounts to maximize what this legislation can do for your retirement. So that's a really exciting portion you're on the retirement income show today. Lots going on in the market. We've got another pullback people are panicking. Some people are scared. Some people are writing it out. A lot of information to discuss on on this week's retirement income show choice sharp is a certified financial planner. And of course, a local family owned firm is oh Carver's financial group offices throughout the Houston area. And you can find out more about those on that website. I gave you oh, carved F G dot com. So let's talk about Margaret volatility. Troy could you guarantee us that every year? We'll be like twenty seventeen on Wall Street if you could do that. I would put all my money in Wall Street this year, though, that's not exactly been like twenty seventeen the truth is this year is a much more typical year in the markets. Then 2017, of course, 2017 was an anomaly, that's. Once in a hundred years type event and oftentimes we see investors clients really short term memories when it comes to the market. We've remember what happened in two thousand seventeen and we forget what happened in two thousand sixteen or twenty fifteen and we're just seeing normal volatility returned to the equity markets, so historically the stock market gives us to really good buying opportunities throughout the course of the year. So we've seen that this year. We had a big sell off the end of January and February where the S P dipped about ten percent. And then now we've seen this again over the past few weeks here where another great buying opportunity his happen. But this is normal volatility. The market does not traditionally go in a straight arrow up like it did in two thousand seventeen. So a lot of times we get shortsighted. We have short term memory. And we think it's supposed to be all good the market just keeps going up and up. But the no the truth is that the market goes down. And sometimes that. Fall is quick and it's fast. And it's painful if you're over extended into any one industry like right now, if you're over extended into oil and gas stocks energies getting hammered down seven percent one day earlier in the week and energies downtrend it's in a twenty percent correction right now. So this is why having a guide with you in retirement. If the do Sherry is so important to help build a diversified investment portfolio that takes care of not only your growth opportunities. But you're you're stable more secure opportunities inside the portfolio to get you a nice well-rounded, balancing and one of the things we're doing for people right now with this recent correction in the market is two things. We're doing a hidden fee analysis of your your mutual funds. If you have hidden fees inside, your mutual funds, and most of you do we're going to show you what those fees are. We're gonna add them up. We're gonna quantify them for you. And then also a risk analysis. What we're seeing from from people who are coming in to meet with us for the first time is they have a tremendous amount of risk concentrated in technology stocks inside their mutual funds or an oil and gas stocks. We're seeing a lot of portfolios that haven't been managed properly with the the growth that we've seen in the energy industry this year and also the technology industry over the past few years. So a lot of mutual funds heavy concentration, so we're doing these risk analyses and really helping people understand where they're most exposed where they're most vulnerable in their portfolio. So if you'd like to get either of those analyses, your hidden fee analysis or your your risk analysis. Give us a call at one eight hundred eighty two to sixty four thirty four one eight hundred eighty two to sixty four thirty four and let's look and see where you may be overexposed. If your portfolio is down five ten twelve percent. You might have a bit too much risk inside those accounts. So we're going to give you this analysis free of charge. One eight hundred eighty two to sixty four thirty four choice sharp is the CEO of Okara financial group is also a certified financial planner. I'm Mark Elliott glider with us today for the retirement income show. We're talking about retirement and we're talking about market volatility. And you talk about people coming in for the first time Troy, and they're taking on a lot more risk than they realize. And that really makes sense though, because we're in the 4._0._1._K retirement world. Now, we're all of that is invested in Wall Street, and if we have not done anything since two thousand and nine well, we're probably not as balanced as as well as we should be because the markets did so well through that nine year period, and they're still doing very very well. But there's more bumps along the way now. But if you haven't done anything to your portfolio as you're talking about Troy where you guys have different groups looking at it and making adjustments as you go it's easy to be really unbalancing. Maybe have too much in the stocks are in certain stocks. I don't know how do you look at that? What we're saying is too much exposure into certain industries. So a lotta times, especially with self directors. Who by certain mutual funds, and they manage those mutual funds themselves. It's very common for us to see an investor come in and have maybe ten different mutual funds. But six of those mutual funds their biggest positions are are are Amazon and apple in net flicks and Microsoft, so they're not really diversified. Because they're heavy in technology. Even though they have several funds. These funds are all individually invested real heavy in these gross stocks that we've seen really exploded over the past few years, but lead the the recession here down the recession, but lead the market decline. Over the past few weeks. So that's what we're seeing is is even when people think they're diversified. And they have maybe several mutual funds. Those mutual funds are heavily concentrated into these positions. And it's important to to have an understanding of the differences the nuances between the accumulation phase when you're working in building a nest egg and the retirement phase once we cross over into retirement, or we're we're getting closer to that two three four five years out. We really want to start to look at strategies that are gonna protect our principal that are going to secure our gains still going to grow. But we want to grow with a bit more conservative touch on things, and we want to start planning for income and taking advantage of the tax law and doing things that are going to position us best and our family for retirement. So to sit down and have a consultation about your retirement to look at your portfolio and see if you're doing the right things to position you for retirement to make sure you're paying less tax if possible make sure you're managing risk in an appropriate manner. Give us a call at one eight hundred eighty two to sixty four thirty four one eight hundred eighty two to sixty four thirty four you're gonna leave your. Formation on our messaging service here we're going to give you a callback Monday. And just started discussion about retirement, what's important to you. It's important to your family. What is the purpose of your money in retirement? Let's make sure that you have a nice balance portfolio income plan, you're paying less tax if possible, and you have a strategy that's gonna take you through this next phase of your life, one eight hundred eight two to sixty four thirty four choice sharp is the CEO of Okada's financial group. I'm Mark LA glider with us today for the retirement income show. We're talking about market volatility right now, we're gonna get into interest rates and inflation all of those kind of challenges, and then we're going to wrap this show up today with some end of year strategies for tax planning. So we've got a lot on the docket today. And as you said, Troy, if you have any questions, you can always sit down with Troy, and it's really just a visit. If you will just Troy finding out more about you you being able to ask Troy questions about where you are. And specifically to your situation because everybody's situation is different eight hundred eighty two two six four three four. So with mortgage volatility in it. It's really. You know, it's not uncommon. I think people sometimes get confused with especially maybe get lulled to sleep 2017 that we were talking about. But it's not that long ago two thousand eight when people, you know, the 4._0._1._K's we're becoming tool one case, it's really about fear and greed. You know in the markets are doing, well, we get greedy, we want to stay there. And we see the markets dropping we want to get out and those kind of things also can lead to little market runs. Can't they if people are jumping in like crazy buying markets by go up. But if they drop out they get scared, then you can see the market go the wrong direction. Yeah. Absolutely. Especially with the mutual fund industry today, and how much money is passively managed through vanguard and fidelity index funds and exchange traded funds. So here's what the media isn't telling you about this recent sell off in the market. What's partly contributed to it is we just rack wrapped up taxed harvesting season for all the big mutual funds. So this is where if you run a mutual fund, and you invest tens of billions of dollars. Dollars the accountants for those those mutual fund companies they need a couple of months to get the taxes done to get everything prepped for the year end, so mutual funds that go through this tax harvesting process, and we just wrap that up. So a lot of the selling that we seen was in this period where it was leading up. It was a quiet period in the market where it was leading up to third quarter earnings being reported. Now a lot going on in the markets. Things were real quiet. The Federal Reserve had recently said they're going to continue to raise interest rates steady pace. There wasn't any additional Federal Reserve announcement upcoming. So we were in this quiet period. And during this quiet, period. Mutual funds were selling millions and millions and millions of shares to harvest tax losses to sell their gainers and sell their losers to offset the best they can and that was a ton of selling during this quiet, period. So that an fears about what's going on with China. Fears about earnings corporate earnings slowing down in two thousand nineteen decelerating and into twenty twenty. So we had those fears out there from a macro perspective. But on a much smaller level here. We had tons of selling over the past few few weeks here because mutual funds were were selling shares during this tax harvesting, period. Now, it doesn't mean we don't have challenges economically and also from a corporate earnings standpoint. But this is why having a well diversified portfolio is so important in retirement and having a guide to guide you through this period. And when you see the markets are down three four five percent. And you don't really know why?.

It's for me the principal. Okay. No. That that one's pretty easy. All right. So with the credit bureau, you dispute the item being on your report that triggers a thirty day countdown and during that thirty day period you contact the collector, and you do so in writing not by phone. And you send them a letter send it certified and say that you dispute the validity of this debt. There is no such debt. And if they fail to remove it that you will sue them in small claims court. They don't want it. They wanna use court to be eating people up with judgments. They don't want it to be the other way around. They realize you're serious, they'll remove that item. You've probably noticed is that one item even though it's for relatively small amount of money is messing you up credit wise. The other thing is is this a cable company or a phone company? Phone. Okay. So you can find out where a pretty easily where the phone company is based. And then file a complaint about them with the Better Business Bureau where they're based. And they will probably pull the item back from collection. To not have a unresolved complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Okay. So resolve it with the credit once you're doing all three at the same time, sir. And it's impossible to know, which one of those three steps will get this item removed. Right. But I can guarantee you that if you try all three you have a near one hundred percent chance that you will have this collection item.
