"But we're not paying attention to sometimes when you might see envy, let's say, the car. And I'm not a fancy car guy, but I like the idea that I could have enough money that would be an option. You know what I mean? So we failed to look at, well, how did they get there? And would you be willing to do what they did? And when I hear of, you know, I'll use that example. Do I do I when I think back to it, do I look at any successful entrepreneur like will go back to her Moses since he's very high profile? Have I dreamt ever about doing what he does? It's like, no. I've never dreamed about owning a gym. I've never dreamed a lot of teaching people how to sell gym memberships. I've never dreamt about being on the phone, banging it all the time, trying to sell gym memberships. Even if I was selling them at a high clip. I've never dreamt about those things. So why do I care about? Not that I care, but his outcomes will never match my me because that's not what I dream about doing. And so I think about when I was in that state, I was thinking back to like, man, there's really only two entrepreneurs. I really, I think look up to. Let me guess. Base camp guy? No, no. It's actually, because I don't program software. Yeah. Okay, I'm more like you looked up to him because of how he built companies and remotely and all that. But okay. Yeah. Well, I really look up to Matt violas, who owns lost enterprises. And I look up to Jay Carpenter, who is the founder of Burton snowboards. He's since passed away. But a documentary, I want to recommend people is dear writer. It's about Jay Carpenter. It was on HBO Max and this guy was basically his goal wasn't the money. His goal literally his goal was to snowboard 200 days a year. That was his goal. And along the way, I mean, he was also a very good businessman. It was interesting. I found out about Burton snowboards because they bought Channel Islands, which at the time was like the biggest surfboard brand because they sponsored Kelly slater. And I was like, how does he have enough money to buy this? You know what I mean? And so I started reading about him. And even though I never was in the snowboarding or anything like that, I just love the idea that he dedicated his life to chasing that thing. Because he's got whatever. He has got more money than people can probably ever dream of having.

"Said that you'd notice a lack of playfulness in the industry when you entered. And you were coming in with a very different perspective. Now, that was ten years ago. Fast forward to today, do you still feel there's a lack of playfulness? No way. I mean, it's amazing now. I have to comment on all the amazing makeup artists that when I did get into makeup at the beginning were very inspiring, like Alex box. Pat McGrath. She's my parents, Alex. Oh, she's so great. She was a huge inspiration to me because she really was doing a lot of really amazing kind of colorful painting, interesting work, bal Garland, obviously, Peter Phillips, topolino, there's like loads of people, you know, so to say people was doing were doing boring stuff is not fair because they really were. But I think maybe in hindsight we're talking like ten years ago, maybe what I brought to it was just a kind of a bit more of an uneducated approach, a kind of an outsider approach where I was sort of tackling the face, not as a face to take the makeup, but make up to take a face. So I was trying to abstract the face all the time. I was kind of putting paint and almost not even using the face in the way it kind of maybe should have been. And I think that just was a slightly different perspective. And it was really young. I was like, I was 20. And I think they were, you know, just that sort of playful attitude. Maybe came through. Yeah. You mentioned that shoot where you were like, the clay cleaner and painter. And there was the proper makeup artist. Was that like a breaking moment where you decided to make the switch or did you have a big break where like ID then booked you as the face painter, not the body painter? Like, what was your big break? Well, after that, I got booked by designer called Christopher Shannon in British designer, he did menswear. And I and I did face painting in his shows, and I drew the I painted these kind of landscapes on the model's faces as they were going down the runway, like sunsets and stuff. And backstage I met and I make a part is called Adam de Cruz, and he was like, what is this girl doing? Like, I've never seen this kind of thing before. And he was like, look, do you want to do you want to join me on set for a day? You can see how I work and you can show me some of your techniques. So we kind of did that and I went and he showed me how to conceal and do a little bit of kind of basic stuff. And then I showed him some of my blending and doing other things, whatever in the body painting style. And then I just kind of, I don't even know really what came next. I think I just was in a circle where there were photographers and people around me who were testing and working for free and doing shoots and it was amazing like creative time in London where everybody was just working for free and testing all the time. And I just kind of, yeah, linked up with some people and brought my very small kit. To certain stuff and just kind of went from there, really. Is your kit still small? No, my kids. My kids like, oh like 70 a like 90 kilos or something, 80 kilo. Oh wow. In multiple roles, how do you travel? Yeah, I carry it and these like Burton snowboard, suitcases, my friend and mother makeup artist, so she loves those bags. Oh, they're the best, yeah. So yeah, sometimes snowboard bag. Who are some of the other people at this time in London that you're collaborating with at this point, you've collaborated art, musicians, other makeup artists. What are some that feel really personal to you? I mean, I think some of the post like all kind of testing and whatever. Some of my sort of biggest breaks I think were the beginning with ID magazine. And I did some great shoots with Daniel sandwood. Where we did and Simon foxton the stylist where we were kind of, I got to, I got to do a lot of really cool painting stuff I like tattooed, all these funny sort of characters all over a boy, and then I did this prosthetic lizard face for another shoot for interview magazine and interview magazine also I did quite a lot of fun stuff for and it really was like every time I got booked, there was something really like full on colorful, crazy. And that was really nice. And then shows as well. I remember Aggie and Sam. I did these LEGO masks where I was like, the whole thing was inspired by kind of kids, and so I was like, how would kids approach your face? Well, they probably just chuck something at it, wouldn't they? And just see what lands. So that's kind of what I did. I chucked LEGO at face and just stuck it where it kind of landed and so it was all just about kind of exploring interesting ways of approaching the face, I guess. So now you're talking about your vibe is so different than really any other makeup artist that we've certainly interviewed. And we've contributed a ton of makeup artists. You have a really singular vision, you know, no one else is talking about shocking Legos at a face. For fashion show, you know? But you're talking about in the beginning, like you're working these very editorial gigs and now you've worked with so many massive corporate designers and corporate fashion houses that are.

"I want to be a skier. In fact, I want to be a snowboarder. Here's another movie for you guys. Dear writer on Netflix, it's a documentary about the creator of Burton snowboards. It's so good. But I just fell in love this family's skiing and it's like their family history through videos and photos for like 30 years while skiing or snowboarding. And I was like, I want to be that family. So that was my vision, but I don't know. I think you grow up skiing or you don't. And my boyfriend is European, so he skis. And like fancy skiing, like oh, we spend every new year's Switzerland and blah blah blah. He has a much prettier accent than that. But he skis. And so it was like, oh, let's do something fun for the big guy for his birthday. So we're gonna go skiing. And I don't know what I'm doing, but I did get a pair of those like ski pant overall things that they're not very excited. They're just black. They're not like, I wish they were like a bright color or something fun. But pretty excited to wear overalls in the snow and you know try and go down a mountain. I'm taking lessons. So I'm taking lessons with my kids, so that should be hilarious. And that's, you know, we'll see, guys. The point is we're gonna go have an adventure. And maybe I'm gonna become a skier. It would really work out well because my big goal for 2022 is to stop being such a weenie. But after New Year's Day, I took a walk with my love and we're looking out at the ocean and we're talking about our goals for the year and I was like, I just want to stop being a weenie. I am such a weenie about cold about anything that feels scary or any situation where I feel like I'm gonna be physically hurt, which is basically everything. Like I'm so bright. You all get on stage and talk to 20,000 people for 5 hours. Zero problem, not nervous at all. In fact, I was talking to my team today we're working on we're working on a little tour guys, so get excited more details later. But working on tour we're talking about different cities blah blah blah. And we were mapping out what it would be and how long it would be and they were like, oh, you know, do you think you can like three hours like that? That's a lot. And I was like, oh my gosh, at three hours? Oh, three hours of hilarity and comedy and joy and talking to women and peeing our pants because we're laughing so no, this is rise conference is three days. Three hours, easy peasy lemon squeezy. So I'm not scared of stuff like that. I'm not I'll go take a meeting with anybody and I won't be intimidated, but I am terrified of the idea of putting like a blade on my foot and running over ice. I'm just gonna put, oh, you want me to like glue these sticks to my feet and then slide down the side of an icy mountain? That sounds terrifying. But the goal is that we're not going to be such a weenie. Hashtag don't be a weenie. That's my personal hashtag for this year. So I'll keep you guys posted. I'll let you know what happens. We're a 70 year old trade organization that supports the winter industry with a mission to help the winter industry thrive. So that's about SIA. I'm a native vermonter. I'm from a little town just north of Stowe. Morrisville Vermont. Born and raised there, and I live in Park City, Utah now. My third time living here in my almost 30 years in the winter sport business. I can't believe I'm saying that, but it's been a fun ride. And I've started in the winter competitive racing side. Working and living in Europe with the focus on World Cup skiing. And then I moved back to the U.S. and started working for Solomon when they were owned by Adidas, which was really fun. Experience and ride in the big world of team sports and sportswear and then winter sport. And from there, I went to Burton snowboards where I worked for about 12 years. Running the new business department. And licensing, partnerships, global marketing. And that landed me here at SIA where I've been for 5 and a half years, almost 6. And it's been a nice transition coming from snowboarding from Alpine from team sport all the way to where I am today. We're helping the industry thrive. We're creating research products, data points, we own a consumer show called snowball, which we'll talk about in a little bit. We have a climate platform, called the united climate united and we're just launched a climate lab this week in anticipation of outdoor retailer next week. And so we're really focused on consumer climate inclusion and researching data just to keep it very simple and pure. Can you talk to me a little bit about what exactly SIA does? I know you gave me like the quick, this is what it is. But what does this do? And I guess most people's relationship with snow sports industry of America is on the retail side, or at least from my perspective. So what does as I do one for the retailers and overall? Right. So most people in historically no SIA as the trade show. Right. And ironically, SIA created the whole trade show world. And if you can imagine 70 years ago, there were no trade shows. So essay created the environment where they retailer can see the product first from a wholesaler. Make an order, have that order delivered to the retail store, the following fall and so on and so forth, then the consumer gets access to it. Right..

I don't talk a lot about my snowboarding chapter but so in the nineties. When snowboarding was on this kind of meteoric rise was just going to the olympics. I i was sponsored snowboarder. Professional snowboarder came If you ever use the bathroom in my office you'll see my one and only signature model Give my name and used that bathroom. Yes i'm to have to pay a visit to the cunanan unload yup drink a bunch of water. You'll have an excuse. So when i got done snowboarding and it was great like snowboarding paid for college. Snowboarding helped set me up to be able to take that next step alive. And i didn't plan to work in snowboarding. It just worked out that way. I got recruited by burton snowboards. And i was waiting to join state department. I was going to go become. Take the civil service exam and go become a state department operative. And that was what i thought i wanted to go. Travel the world and go to exotic places made carry firearm. I don't know. And i had this notion of that. And then you know. Because i'd been in snowboarding for so long. I met a lot of folks and i got recruited by burton and the job was quite literally to move to california. Moved to nita's california and work with a young snowboarder named sean whiten and so they hired me and i packed up my truck and i drove to density us and i met the white. What year was that. That was in two thousand and two no way so he was a teenager. I was like making them do his homework. After half pipe practice to send back to carlsbad high school. And then we'd go to the next practice and we'd go riding together. We would fly all over all over creation together as he's sixteen years old. So how long were you with him for our about that..

"Black kids were swimming to burn their skin them never to show up at these places again and that happened all over this country for years the history of the sierra club even is is is messy when you go back to its roots and people if you have that in your history right if you have that cultural in your history and your family you're in it's passed down. You don't go to these places or these spaces. Bad shit might happen to you. Of course you're going to learn to become learn to think that. Yeah maybe that's not for me or that is quote unquote in white activity. Or why would you be doing that white thing etc. That's one of the beautiful things about racism. Is it a few as a system if you teach long enough. And if it operates long enough the people who are subjected to it actually start to believe it. And that's what i would like to vessel some that. I wanna be a part of breaking. And i also implore people who have power in those spaces to understand that like yeah i as a black man who's visible in these spaces can can say things and get people's attention but it's people it's the people with real power the people who have real access. They can do ten billion times more than i can buy affecting their circles in having these conversations and figuring out ways to expand landscape and provide more access just with the things that they have in their toolbox. They don't have to go and join some special thing or formulated. Some big club organization. It's just like okay. What do i have access to that. I can help to change this even a little bit. Do you see any change at all. In the wake of the george floyd murder or any other trigger that the power players in the outdoor industry which i assume are like the patagonia 's north face and the all the ski company's right like i assume at a business level those companies would obviously play a huge role in this. Who do things doing a good job. He's doing a good job better job now or any job i think. Pentagon patagonia has taken some great steps. I've seen the way they have given platforms so there are lots one thing i can say is is. There are a lot of people of color. Indigenous people black people that have formulated groups to advocate for themselves. And do outreach. And what is cool. That i'm seeing are the brands who are locating the people that are doing it right and giving them a chance to have their voices amplified and to use their platforms to engage. More had been doing a great job with it. They have this podcast. They're doing called the trail ahead with an outdoor trail runner from from portland and A black woman and it's just so cool. The conversations that are being had and that these conversations are being amplified on the planet patagonia platform for people who normally wouldn't get to listen in and learn how various types of people engage in these spaces. I think the denigrate job. I mean i full disclosure. I sit on the board now burton snowboards. They invited me onto the board in november prior to that had never been a black person person of color. Who sat on that board. Would i have gotten that. Call up if it wasn't. George floyd i don't think so and i'm honored and humbled that never use thought would happen especially in the wake of jake burton's passing so i am so grateful to be able to get to to see their enthusiasm in wanting to build anti-racism and build inclusion more importantly into the culture of the brand in being an inclusive brand and that takes time to lab to build that into the dna of your brand. But they are looking to do. So i'm the scandalous Of america say they just they put a person of color on on their board recently. And i think people are learning like okay. The only way that we're going to be able to learn about these things is if we actually have the perspectives invoices of from within the bypass community. Helping us actually make decisions acting in a way that holds a mirror to us to show us like if you don't know you're blind spots putting the same people in the room that all have the same blind blind spots and saying like okay. Let's all this problem. Let's have a diversity initiative great. I've seen people posting like videos of like. Here's the diversity initiative and i'm looking around the pictures of mike. Is this like onion post. 'cause there's this you know so it's it's welcoming in those voices being okay with giving up a little bit of that power but as i tell people or brands that i consult like stop thinking about it from a place of giving up power and start thinking of it from a place of sharing power tree. An intern by sharing power. Creating more power. Giving yourself more fuel the opportunity to be a better brand in and in the end the more profitable brand. Because i tell people all the time You might want to look at the numbers of the demographics of this country and Where we're going to be in five ten fifteen years. You could continue to put your head in the sand and pretend like it's not a thing but Es numbers do not lie and these landscapes are going to need to be expanded for you to continue to function as a brand for your thing to be. Viable was just going to leave without you. Like i say we have lots of friends. We've met once. I haven't fallen you for a minute. You become the voice of my young you know shredding angsty teenage ripper self. You are a musician. You producer you host. You're going to act act as a stretch. I i make cameos from time to time. Count instead car county and it's feels like you really have just come into your power. I mean really feels like you're organized. What are you besides stoked and we will have all the links to that. Because if you're listening to this and wanna change support this organization. What are you fired up about right now. Sort of in the in the near future. That's feeding yourself because you are really sort of have that problem you can do so many things so well thank you for recognising the problem part of it because my management and agent would be like thank you see. "Was a paper boy. Nice for about six or seven years. Did the morning paper single-use a week. The older review. I guess i started when i was around ten and i did it. I probably did it for about four or five years now. There was the had to have it done by six thirty in the morning. And then i would go to school after that so it was a little you know one of the that was my first job and then I worked up north in my dad's mining camps actually as a teenager and spent a lot of summers even as young as grade one was a northern scotch. Ruin exploring for uranium back in the seventies nineteen. Seventy eight was my first Mining camp experience as little guy. And then i started working in these caps when i was seventeen eighteen and that's Right around when. I started taking snowboarding seriously than i. I was hired on as a coach after that to coach summer camps for greg kelly and his summer camp set black com- whistler blackcomb. How old were you when you won the gold. So how are even how. When did you start making money in snowboarding to the point where you thought. This could be a career so when i was fifteen. I started snowboarding when i was sixteen. I was sponsored Three or four different companies burton snowboards. At you know. I already had ski racing. I wasn't getting any frequent. We were paying for everything. And then as soon as i started because i ski race until i was fifteen and then i i found snowboarding and gave up ski racing much to my dad's chagrin and Gave it up and started. Snowboarding and then by the next year was sponsored. Competing was sponsored by burton. Snowboards oakley sunglasses and Almost another so as your cross concert and getting some money in and then right up until the olympics in after the olympics. Did you work at anything else. Or is it strictly in snowboarding or you know in winter sports yay i was able to just Actually know what what i did when i was nineteen.

The pretty university basketball team was forced to board a second flight on Monday night after their first charter plane to the Tuesday game in Maryland had to make an emergency landing in Indianapolis. What sort of emergency landing Well, it doesn't go into intimate detail, but the team was heading from West Lafayette, the Baltimore when the plane experienced mechanical issue, like, See if they were on a bus that could just put Over to the side of the road and said second bus come get us and carrying us away. Well, they did exactly that. It sounds like in an airplane, right? Yeah. What if they hadn't been able to make the emergency landing? They did for now. You know what? You should do what you should get on. Take talk. No, no. There is a pair of their twin pilots and they fly together. The women pilots, airmen mail pile. Well, I'm out. But their whole account is set up for people exactly like you who have all kinds of phobias about flying. And so they go through like the common things that people are most afraid of, and they tell them here is why you don't need to be afraid has been really helpful for me because I don't love flying. I mean, I'll do it. Obviously, I'm not as fearful as you are, but I don't like it and there's a lot of things that scare me to death. And so they calm me down.
