"Steve thompson. Eric Nelson at target field today setting the scene for what should be a magical night. The retirement of Joe Mauer's number seven. He's going to go into that illustrious club, along with Tom Kelly, Burt bly Levin, Kirby Puckett can herbeck, Tony Leyva rod Karoo, Harmon Killebrew. And of course, Jackie Robinson, whose number forty two retired at every MLB ballpark pre-game at five thirty and then they first pitch scheduled for six ten but I'm guessing it'll be probably be more around six thirty because there'll be a, a, a lot of pomp and circumstance for this one Stevie T. Yeah, no, no doubt, Joe Mauer day and the gates were really busy long lines before they opened at four o'clock as the twins kind of come out of the club house and get their pre-game work in well before the start of this game. And you're right. You know, they'll will be downtime for both clubs before the game. But I think a lot of fans are here for Joe Mauer, and I think a lot of fans are here for this team and seeing Jake older Rusi, trion keep that a. A under two and win game number ten tonight is is the twins. Just try and keep the pedal to the metal so to speak while add up, you know, sure they have a big game in the division. But the attitudes gotta be, you know, one game at a time and let's go out and win tonight window, seriously, no reason to let up. I mean when you think about it they, they played sixty eight games so they still have ninety plus games left. Now, the lead is eleven over Cleveland twelve over the Chicago White Sox. And it's a big cushion. But you know, you never know in sports and I think the minute you let up or assume anything that's when trouble starts. So I think the Minnesota Twins need to keep attacking keeping aggressive. I think the front office as Charlie Walters of the pioneer press just told us, they're gonna make moves. They're going to add some pieces to the puzzle. A lot of us may have falsely assumed okay, no kimbrel no kaikal. They're done. No. That's not the case. At all. There will be plenty of sellers here soon as. We get close to the all star break. And then the trading deadline in late July. There will be team saying you know what we can't win. Now we're gonna make a move and try to get prospects. Or get rid of a big contract or whatever and the Minnesota Twins and it's been a long time since we've said it Stevie T, but they're in buyer mode. They are looking to acquire something that can help them not only down the stretch of the season. But as you get to October now and as brought it up with shooter, Charlie Walters. From the pioneer press joined us. He's covered Johm our for a long time. And as has been around the family for a long time and knows the mall is really well. He he brought up something that I wanted to expand on a little bit. And that's up and down this roster. There's so many good moves. They brought in veteran guys year ago and and those didn't pay off. They brought in more veteran guys this year in it's paid dividends. Look around the infield CJ, krone taking over for Joe Mauer at first base has been rock solid over their defense. Pensively hit the ball over the fence. I mean you couldn't ask for more out of C J crew marijuana. Gonzalez guy who can play anywhere. Really steadied the ship early at third base when Miguel snow'll isn't available due to that he'll injury from hell that just wouldn't heal up for him. So he did note standing job down there, Jonathan scope didn't have a great year. In twenty eighteen they took a chance on scope. He's come in and played well. And then, of course, the those poor young guys that they had resigned in Buxton and Kepler Polanco. They've all contributed and played well and then Mitch Garber hero from last night..

"Sports Saturday from target field. We're down the right field line between first base and the foul pole Stevie T Eric Nelson with you. Glad you're along for the ride it literally is the calm before the storm in about two and a half hours. This place will be jam packed with fans and other sell out, Joe Mauer retirement ceremonies will take place. His number seven we'll go up there next to t k Burt bly Levin, Kirby Puckett can herbeck Tony leave rod Karoo, Harmon Killebrew, and, of course Jackie Robinson. So it's gonna be a, a magical night for jobs, DVD. There's no doubt about it. This, this was a hot ticket as soon as the date was announced, and I think a lot of people when they get into the ballpark. And by the way, there are big lines waiting getting gates open at four o'clock today, and they're lined up to get in here early and get settled in and they've got red number seven scattered around the ballpark. It'll be a hot souvenirs for the fans. And there's a big red number seven on the field outside that third base dugout here at target field is really kind of a cool shot. I going to send a tweet in a moment or two about that. But I think a lot of people are gonna remember Johm hours final game and how that turned out here at target field at the end of the twenty eighteen season, Eric, I it was an amazing day for everyone that heard that game on the radio or saw it on television or had a chance to be in the ballpark when, when Joe Mauer put the catcher's gear on one more time. I mean you can't make that up. No. And I think at that moment in time, Joe probably knew that was it, and he wanted to go out as a catcher. The we came in and certainly the early part of his career as a guy behind the backstop. Not only great defensively, but outstanding offensively as well talked about, as one of the, the greatest catchers, we've seen in major league baseball in recent history. So it is going to be a lot of fun tonight. And I'll tell you what, there are so many sevens here, and this is what you wanna see if you go to the casino, a bunch of seven because that's what we've got at target field. They're everywhere and fans will get to take those home. There's Joe Mauer cap giveaways. We've talked about the prince jerseys last night, the purple jerseys. Those were a big hit the weekend sold.

"One timber wolves play here. Newstalk eight three O W C C O. Swore tunnel. It is cold. It is windy. We have blizzard conditions in many parts of Minnesota. That's what I'm wondering Burt bly Levin because I know he feels their pain feels for us down there and four five you guys got stranded in Grand Forks this year. Didn't ya? Yeah. We got a little snow blizzard heading out of might not work Grand Forks. I got experience it a little bit. But not here for fire, Florida. What do you do for you to work with the pictures early and camping in what do you look for when you're looking at young pitchers while big first of all I think the twins for vital thing for a couple of weeks by laughs day as Wednesday, but had the opportunity to watch a lot of the job gets pitch at some of the veterans, and to me like a lot of it is just experience a lot of these kids just have to go out and experience a light hitter. It's a little different throwing on the side. But mine is more. You know, I always told myself three things about stay back. Stay tall workout threat. And you know, some guys I had a tendency to Russia a little bit. But it's how you come back from say a bad pitch at all or along Javadi you want as far as your alarm extension all those things and throwing the ball over the play trusting your stuff don't be afraid to tell Hebert gave Mona here you've been working with some of the younger pitchers. Probably guys. A lot of our listeners. Never been heard of anybody stand. Anybody who looked answered I like this kid. Well, I think there's a lot of good arms. You know here at camp. It's just a matter of the developing to say one guy is it's over he'll against another one. I I was back yesterday here while the team was down at sir soda watching. Michael pineda? Throwing you know, he's a guy that's coming off the Tommy John surgery, and he's had a couple two or three outings on the side facing live hitters where he's got really good. Stop Armfield Scud right now. And it could be a nice surprise. The twins are going to start with him at a rotation. But you know, when you have real or visit Gibson three guys pitch two hundred innings this year. Stay healthy. They're looking for that fourth and fifth starter guys. I call store and guys like that have that opportunity maybe to make an impression Toronto ball deli and a staff here, it's trading like Berea style. He took that step last year was an all-star still got a long way to go to maybe he just ceiling. When you see him. What should I between him and him being a complete picture? I think his shirt is just getting stronger and stronger, I think he's already a complete pitcher. He works as tail end up. If you follow him on Twitter or Facebook or Twitter. But if you follow him is his regiment what he does. He's a good kid. Good family, man and works hardy come to the ballpark every day when he does have a side piece. You know, he's working on something especially the fastball. And that's kind of what I pray. Just control of the fastball all sides of the plate your secondary pitches. A bonus as long as you get an account with your fastball. Good location both sides of the plate. Bourdier impressions of less. Johnson comes on the college ranks and a lot of interest around baseball in what's being called an interesting experiment at this stage. What are you early thoughts on Welsh? Well, you know, you just it's just a matter of time. He's gotta get his feet. Wet has got to get you know, just he's got to get to that comfort zone where you trust this stuff. And they'll weather whatever situation is put into just a bit aggressive. Bert when you came up you you moved at warp speed through the minor leagues to the big leagues. Did you have any idea along the way that you had big league stuff when you're in the minor leagues or just go out and pitch, and you had no idea how far along you were. I really had no idea. You know, I was lucky by first year. I got invited to spread trading at eighteen years old. And I got an opportunity to watch. Jim Carey Jim Kaat Louis t on day Boswell prevent staff at that time. No, I got sent down to AAA. I had no idea. All I knew was I attacked us strikes on I got the ball over the plate. Sometimes I get that ball back. But you know, that's part of the game. And just how you always say don't be afraid to fail. You guys like that start at the plate. They fall behind a little things like that are keys. I think for young kids to realize that, you know, a lot of times I used to go out early in watch batting practice and see how difficult it is to hit the ball round ball with around bat. So we're out of amount on ninety miles an hour. Maybe a good breaking ball or changeups it's tough to hit. And sometimes we as pitchers forget that get that all over the place. You could hang pitch at L pop. It up. Are you gonna make good pitcher naked hit a long way? That's just part of the game. Berta baseball changed so much offensively. Number seven eight nine hitters hitting twenty five home runs a year. Nobody thinks anything of it. You think you're a little bit of a pioneer in that day giving up home run not being such a big deal anymore. Wow. That that my record will never be broken. Mike. Come on. They don't allow that anymore. But no everybody has that uppercut swing. They're trying to hit the long ball. I like the big key for the twins. This year is two guys against box. You know, they have to stay healthy they have to play at least one hundred forty eight hundred fifty games. Great addition of Elsa crows. Lucas Duda us here. CJ crow. They got some popping at lineup bucks and hit a grand slam last night's ball game. So yeah, there's a lot of good things along co and Kepler signing they the five year contracts. I think is a good thing for the organization. So I think a lot of good things are happening. Rocco? Ball deli talked to him this morning about his experience. You don't managing for the first time. And he said it was different. Is also now he's got a you know, three or four hitters they head or knitting ahead. As far as pitching changes. That's the interesting part Burt last question, you looked at the bullpen a little bit here as you work with these pictures, no closure is going to be determined today or anything, but you like in general the numbers they got into potential. They have a closer. There's guys I think that can do it. You know, of course, Taylor Rogers who's coming back. Right. Streaky had last year. He might be a guy with a three in the ninth inning are left handed hitters if you have used yet. Trevor may has outstanding stuff. So there are some guys here Addison Reed house of age experience as far as closer it might be closer by committee at the beginning. And that kinda also it's frame trading. I guess the last couple of weeks pitching coach, Wes Johnson. I'll have a better idea of who to put an situation and say how they do. Bird. Appreciate it very much. We're going to have said Cindy Marie steak. Certificate. This time not the state itself. People have Murray's a great. Appreciate you very much, sir. You're walking, Mike. They take care. All right, Gruber. Thanks. Good shot the end. All right. We can talk a little more twins baseball next right after this Donald said, David, Mike. Live.

"That'd be the call mentioned all the Gold Gloves increase. Yep. Dave Carter, Tony. Yeah. I got a double take a staff. I'm gonna say no say, no, okay. Dave partner know, you saw these guys play a couple of these guys. I'm thirty nine seventy five missed somebody's got primes. So I know you're a little older you've seen these guys. That's why math. You have a good opinion on it. Yes. Yeah. Okay. How about imagine? All right. How about growth? Ooh. Yeah. That's a that's going back aways. Good ball player. Now. Now think about it. It's like, no. I I agree with you. You know, it's funny for years campaigning for Burt bly leave and he finally got it. I was very happy about Burt bly getting it. I thought he deserved it. Right. Jack morris. I deserved. He finally getting I'm no go on. Yeah. Me too. I didn't I didn't think when I heard how really insane. See to me hall of Famer is is you know, I you in the same category as Willie Mays your same category of Bob Gibson. I use that good. And a lot of these guys are not. I agree with you like Parker for drove in one hundred runs four times. Ninety a bunch of times. Lifetime to ninety. Good. But he just to me is just not not, you know, is he better than you know, mantle is better than than roofing is he in the same category said, no. And you're thinking like, Tony, I agree with you. You're talking about a lot of the no brainers Ted Williams mantle as Babe Ruth Gibson, those guys there are no brainers. So you actually have a more like, you know. Yeah, I guess you could say, yeah. Tony, I kind of agree with that. But once they started letting somebody's borderline guys, then it really opens up the conversation towards these other places. Tony can I ask you about Kirby Puckett? He's it. He's very similar to Mattingly. And it was a great ball player to World Series. Help them. Do you think Puckett deserves it? Yeah. It was funny. I was writing down their stats between and Puckett was solid all the way through. It's just like humanity had the cutoff point where he he just didn't, you know, the numbers drop because of his back, and it was it was too bad because he was on his way to being there. But one of the things about being all the famous it's great to do it for five years. But can you do it for ten? Can you do for fifteen? We'll come back with.

"Example alongside Burt bly eleven Steven Gonzalez is here to now as we. Yeah. Yeah. Let's give her a round of applause here. So we're here at target field for twins fast. And we have an auction coming up here at four thirty with my my steam colleague, Dave Lee. And if you wanna get in on that auction, you registered back there or just your back there, and they were gonna have the auction right here at four thirty. So make sure you're doing that too. It's been great. It's been a great afternoon. We've had we had while we had great storytelling with Jim Kaat. Kitty, kitty kitty. We had the Scott Erickson kind of shake things up here a little bit. Now, we have another lefty. You can have another left Stephen Gonzalez, Vince, Stephen, I'm enjoying it. It's been a great weekend. So far, you know, we not got tomorrow. So you know, hope hopefully, we're to get to turn out tomorrow. Stephen have you been on a caravan yet have you gone out? Yeah. You know, I just did it two weeks ago over Sioux Falls. That's where we started kinda yanked in headed eastern, set your first one, this is my first one hundred words, you think about I loved it. You know, you kind of realize how big twins territory is come from San Diego. You think you have a big market team. But you'll forty five minutes north, and you have LA here. You got South Dakota, North Dakota Iowa twins. Territories huge, and Wisconsin. And wisconsin. Does western Wisconsin. Yeah. I overheard. You guys talking some fishing, right? I mean, you out in California catch some crappy out there is that it. Yeah. We got a little bigger crappy got tuna Dorado. Yeah. Yeah. But that's a that's a hobby. Right. A passion for you. Yeah. I do I do some spear fishing, but I come from long of a commercial fisherman. My father grandfather all the way back to my ancestors from Portugal. In spring training. You were saying you stay up. Ceo were a lot of the players stay in spring training. And there's a couple of good ponds out. There has got a loaded bass pond. So you can find a couple of six pounders in there. If you got the right leg all catch-and-release, I'll catch and release. And you know, sometimes there's a gator there. You know? Telling the story when I think of ninety three when I was trying to come back from my shoulder surgery. I stayed in a complex like that had a lake outside through my poll and Eric day after day, nurses, darn gator that was there everyday like in the middle. I guess you got enough goal. I caught something and sure enough. He's coming right toward me. And I'm real real slow because I know this he's he's gonna get me or or the fish. So I got it to shore. And I kind of dangled it a little bit like this and he came in. And I dropped my Paul and random. You got the fish the right thing. Well, Steven it's been fun to watch your career to throughout the miners. Any put up great numbers. Every single step of the way. What's been the biggest challenge at every level? And now being here with the twins at the majors. Yeah. You know, kinda got rocked around that I start in. Trevor make have come to me and saying you're going to have a moment where you realize where you you're going to be able to hang and become a pitcher. But you gotta be able to trust yourself. And you know, just throw it over the plate. And that's what I didn't do. Just kind of to pick the corners. And that's when you get hurt. So I had a moment in Kansas City. I gave up a leadoff triple to marry field. Fall by another walk in. The second and third. No one out. I got three pop ups in a row kept her under there. That was the moment. I knew I'm able to battle. I'll be able to hang good things will have happen. What's the biggest adjustment? You found from AAA to the big lakes. I think everyone has a talent. Once he gets AAA. But I think that mental toughness guys go about their business a certain certain way, they all have the routines. They're much more professional. And it's just a matter of trust. And who you are as person in today's age everybody looks at that gun. You know, you gotta throw ninety seven ninety eight you're not that type of pitcher rely on movement. You rely on hitting your spots. How did that come about? Yeah. You know, I heart door I kinda peaked in high school freshman euros dole ninety but. I've ever since then I've kind of relied on spots and getting ground balls getting those soft pop ups with my change up. You know, you gotta realize that baseball is a game. You can chestnuts. You know, you can you can find ways find weaknesses, and how are you going to be able to pop those out going into spring training? You got a chance to come out of spring training is maybe as one of the five starters, you gotta be excited about that. Are you physically and mentally ready for spring training right now? Yeah, I believe so you know, it's gonna be a fun competitive spring, especially with us young guys Romero, coal Zaka young. You know, we got a ton of young guys that are fighting for that fifth spot. It's gonna be fun. You know, we've been the rotation. Blow a AA AAA, you know, that's been our rotation. So we have little matches here and there and. Okay. You went through. How many starts did you make last year? Five. Okay. Some of those were a couple as a. Open the open in the opener. You were the primary way this, right? It's a new era. You weren't to starter. You're a primary how did you adjust to that? I know we're on a caravan recall Stewart, and he talked about a little bit not something that he liked doing. But you know, what they got the ball on your hand. How did you make the adjustment from your routine usually? Starters. We have routines to get ready for that first hitter. How did you find that? Did you find it difficult when you had to start the second or third any we started it in AAA? It was a little difficult to start. But I think all you gotta do start your team just ten minutes later. I'll do my long toss. Right after the anthem, boys. Already getting ready in the pen. You know, whoever opening for me that day. But you just go about your business. You gotta stay focused. You don't go over the plan with your catcher and you'll only be in their ten minutes later. So as long as you're staying hot and moving around, I think it's going to go to the plan. Let me ask you, and I'm going to be honest. Are they basically convincing you that? You can't face a lineup for the third time. I mean is that something that you're mentally or there? Instilling in in these. Primary pitchers because I wouldn't stand for it. But. It is. I know you have you. Say anything. I can. I always looked at it. If I face say, Dan gladden by face, Dan, gladden who I love facing. Anyway. You want? Why face Dan, gladden, first and second time and say, he you know, I would watch what he did against me. Third time up a better idea. How to pitch them? And I'm sure he has a better idea how to attack me, but there's that game within the game right there. And I just feel sometimes that's being taken away from you young kids that wanna be future right now, Jose, Barea or Gibson or Rizzi. Yeah. You don't have to answer. You don't want to. I know. I I grew up watching Greg Maddux. And so what he would always say is after that first step at he goes, I got you for that third and fourth I got him set up. And so that's kind of how I've always approached the game. Right. You're looking at their tendencies early. So I look at you as a smart pitcher. Okay. You have an idea what you're doing out there. Appreciate that. You look for their tendencies early and. And they say the first inning is the highest yard. And so as a competitor. I obviously think of that, you know, I can get it out. And I want to be that bulldog from the start, but also we're trying to win. So if they think that's the best way of winning, then let's do it. And you know, who wants everyone wants to get to the World Series. You had mentioned too about the competition for this fourth and fifth starter spots in that real a number of names, you know, within this twins organization. And you said, you know, it's it's fun. Is it fun like is it fun competing against somebody else on your own team. But I mean, ultimately you want to beat that person out? Yeah. I mean, obviously, we're going to try, and you know, better one another. But that's where the that's how the team's going to get better. We're gonna have guys, you know, obviously, we'll probably be sliding up and down throughout the year. But the end game is to get to the playoffs and to get that World Series. And by then we'll probably all be up here. Rooting for one another coming out of the pen, weather, whatever we're doing, but it will be fun. I've been with Kohl Stewart since our junior year of high school we did all American game together. You know, it's just that get a little rise out of each other. I think it makes us all better. It's a competition and makes you better because you want to beat that guy. You know, even knows your teammate. But you wanna be like you said you wanted to get to the World Series you want both of you to be there. There's always a competition of wanting to be the number one guy over the number three or four. But then you could still be buddies though, because we're all trying to win like Coors light. See some champagne get pop balls. What? What was that moment that did you ever look in like your first couple of starts are appearances. Did you ever look and say like oh now I've arrived like he saw somebody in the on-deck circle. Or who was that first guy that you saw? Yeah. You know, it was actually a Adrian bell trae down in Texas. The guy that coach me when I was younger. Carlos flipped us. Coach me from ten to fifteen. He was actually his roommate in rookie ball. So I got to know bell trae couple of times. And that was the moment in the on-deck.

"We're gonna hear from Burt bly Levin, a hall of fame pitcher. One of just nine guys to have his number retired by the Minnesota Twins. The most recent of course, number seven Joe Mauer they had that ceremony at Cretin Durham hall in Saint Paul on Tuesday. Joe was surprised the twins. Did a good job of keeping it undercover. And if you can hide a scoop from our next guest you've really done a good job. Charlie Walters from the Saint Paul pioneer press joins us and Charlie. I know you're all over that sportsbeat, including the capital city of Saint Paul. You're happy for Joe, aren't you? Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Are actually they didn't hide it from me. I do by the week. You sat on it. Oh, yeah. I had to they asked me to of the school asked me to. And so that was fine. I was out of town you and I had lunch with some guys in. Mentioned that I was out of town. So I'm sorry that I could make it I did Texaco and got a nice reply back room. And. As you were saying that her day. I texted him to say that. I was sorry. I couldn't be there. But as you, and I were saying Notre Dame or talking about him, and it might forty three years in the newspaper business that there's nobody classier that's the classiest guy I've ever covered much of since high school and and really happy for him. And he's going to get a lot more honors than his retirement and the big one and becoming I'm guessing in Nevada age thirty seven thirty eight twenty when he finally gets elected to the hall of fame in Cooperstown. Yeah. That would be the coup gras. I know what the event on Tuesday. Charlie Burt bly Levin read a letter from rod Karoo and rod mentioned that he and Tonio Leyva used to marvel at the way Joe could hit any pitch to any part of the field. And and I I just started thinking to myself if Karuna leave are giving you platitudes as a hitter, you're pretty good. Yeah. Yeah. That's right. I remember one of the great things about. Attending twins game. And if I were not in this newspaper business, I'd go just to watch yet. I'm serious just to watch them swing. That was a highlight of of the games when I when I've gone to towards games that he's played as it. Just watch them. Swing the bed. It's such a great sway when I was in spring training. I used to go under the battery cage and watch him take take batting cage. And of course, take Betty practice. And of course, the pitchy mounted sixty six inches, but I'd watch him in the batting cage. When he dial it up to about ninety miles an hour, and he put up he'd actually move up Eric about ten feet at that speed in the battery cages and just hit rockets up from fifty feet away. So it's the kid's got. I don't know. There's been some great players in the game. But nobody's had a better swing. I don't think that it's fun to watch just watching swing. Yeah. And Saint Paul is the capital city. But it's also a hall of fame city is, you know, shooter with Paul Molitor, Dave Winfield Jack Morris now in the hall, maybe someday Joe Mauer, the only other city really of comparable size to do. Better would be mobile Alabama. What are we got out of mobile? We've got McCovey. Oh, yeah. I believe Ozzie Smith. Willie mays. We're going to look up all the number. I think it's five though. So Saint Paul is chasing mobile. Yeah. But aired yet. Remember, these guys if Jogos in which I suspect you will not only from the city, they're probably just save neighborhood. Which is which is pretty amazing. Isn't it? Well, it's incredible. And then you throw in the fact that rumor has it it's nose here. This is the tundra. Right. And and you don't think about baseball in Minnesota. Here's exactly right. It's it's an incredible story. And then not to do. I try to be objective about that school or Molly and modern enjoy our game from that creating high school think of all the guys that they produce out of that school. I mean from from Joel the number one pick in the draft. Matt Burke, six time pro ballplayer player and Chris Wendy Heisman Trophy winner. They had a couple of major league umpires, Mark Wagner, and that Tim cheetah who's a became a crew chief I mean, and then all the top college kids. I mean, of course. Yeah. Quarterback Steve Walsh? Steve Walsh eleven year NFL quarterback. And I remember I used to. One time. I've watched as well. My lot one day and the guy came by. I didn't know it was on the corner and his morning, and he pulled over and he said, how come you always writing about treating Durham all I said, well have not always right on. But when I do here's the reason, I realized about the same things that you and I talked about. And he drove away. There's those kids are just high achievers and there, and it's nudity. Jelly walters. Our guest here on a c sports Saturday. You can catch his column tomorrow. This Sunday super shooter in a Jlo's gonna give us the mobile hall of famers, by the way, Charlie. Yeah. This is the list of mobile mobile residents and natives for the hall of fame Willie McCovey Hank Aaron Ozzie Smith satchel page and Billy Williams. That is terrific. But I want to know if they were from a two mile radius as these guys from Saint baller, the I don't think they're in front of two mile radius. I think four from within the city in and Billy Williams was from. I'm sorry. Yeah. Billy Williams Williams's from a suburb so same same metro area. Yeah, you're right. And Eric mentioned they get a little bit more opportunity with the weather down there to play a little bit longer. I remember also Washington senators in spring training. Ted Williams is our manager. And I remember one day came over to me. And I I'm around me. He said you're going to get along their luck for me because you're from Minnesota. Florida. Arizona. California where these guys have been playing all their lights the kids up here. You get you get about half the opportunity in terms of experience to learn the play that those other states do the southern states just like got Anderson air, you know, take what he's achieved with the with the university of Minnesota baseball team. You know being for Minnesota. He doesn't have the opportunity to play. As long as the Texas employer, James, California, and that sort of thing in college baseball, it's quite a feat. It is and I can remember growing up in Kelly as a youngster I'd finish high school football. And we'd be out hitting baseballs outside two weeks later, that's kind of weather advantage. You have. But I do think up here as you said with John and other coaches, the attention to detail and fundamentals because you have a lot of indoor work and you're in field houses or bubbles or domes or whatever it forces you to focus on the little things. Yeah. Plus, they just thought work everybody to that's a that's the bottom line to it is the little things, of course, in Dixie data gone before John, but yeah, it's the little things, and and they all work everybody. Our work our worked everybody. Montreal worked. Everybody morris. Winfield just a pretty good. Pretty good show. Now, Charlie what do you think is going to happen tomorrow in downtown Motown Minnesota Detroit huge NFL game for the Vikings. Well, I don't see how the Vikings can lose that. If they if they were to lose that then there'd be they'll be careers at stake. In that game. But he tries out of it. They're five nine they. They're you know, they're playing I don't know what they're playing for their also hurt Viking sack of ten Stafford six ten times seven weeks ago. I think it could be another sack sack fast tomorrow, Eric I don't see how any any way I'd say it's thirty to seven or something like that thirty two three biking's win. Vikings have everything staked everything to play for they need to win. And so the focus in my mind is next week in Minneapolis against the bears and what they're gonna do. Get arrested one that division. We're not they're gonna arrest. Those guys playing a game. They got a lot of stick to win the division. They gotta get ready for playoffs cannot afford to get anybody hurt. So that'll be kind of an intriguing question going forward. But I haven't assuming that it's a slam dunk for the for the biking tomorrow against the lines on the other hand, it's the NFL. You never know. I would bet nickel on the Game Boy sector biking's to win that game will be over by halftime. Yeah. And I'm wondering if what we saw Miami. That's the new blueprint run at forty times rely on a on a pass rush that absolutely disorients the opposing offense, and you know, ground and pound all that good stuff and shooter Kirk cousins goes back home. He's a Michigan state guy. So you know, he wants this thing. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I think addict Eric what you said is is absolutely accurate. They'll do the same book print. They did against Miami tomorrow in Detroit what why not just the same. It's a lesser team than than Miami. And. No problem doing the same thing. Run run run at work. How exciting is it for you? Charlie to see Saint Paul become a serious part of the Minnesota professional sports scene. You've got Dolly ons field who opened up in April against New York City football club. Minnesota united. Minnesota wild have been around for a long time. Now, Saint Paul saints have certainly carved out a niche Saint Paul is a big part of the sports saturation in the twin cities. Yesterday. I I can't remember Eric you never walk by. Yes back. Yeah. We chatted to call them. And and he was a big part of the city. You know, he was the political after behind that. Charleston when he was governor for Saint Paul to get that Xcel energy center, and look what that's done for for the, you know, the NHL it's a big league operation now in Saint Paul. I'll AM spills unbelievable looks like a you know, they were testing let few weeks, and there was that. Some people told me Chris right told me that people get win by their at three died in on highway ninety four at three two or three or four AM flying saucer landing because it's south around and Latin but it's a two hundred. Thank the two hundred and forty eight million dollar operation, so far or something like that. And it's a bite the other day looking from the weather still building a thing. It looks looks terrific. They got a good owner Bill McGuire. And you know, what they're gonna they're going to sell that up for. They got a waiting list of Martin thirty five hundred season tickets to figure that out soccer in Saint Paul and Beck, and those guys are nuts about the you know, the way to market the say so that every game there's a sell out. It's about oh, seven seventy five hundred a game with the same. So. Yeah, it is really neat middle. Saint Paul are our our our niche there that that that there are major league sports in many ways, and it's fun to be around. Yeah. Allience feel the the beacon of the Saint Paul midway right between the downtowns. I find ninety four you're exactly right shooter. You can't miss it. When I was driving to the sharks wild game. The other night they were testing some lights to and you talk about distracted driving. I could barely focus on the interstate. Yeah. I thought the aliens from Mars. Forlani? Blue.

"Eric. Hello Rossini, quite a day here at Crete and Durham hall in Saint Paul very fun hearing it Joe live after his number was retired the energy in that space. I bet is pretty electric. Yeah. Absolutely. And a few things that touch on. I know that CTO carried part of the event live, but governor Dayton did give a video address. And he announced the proclamation that today is Joe Mauer day. So that's big unto itself. Joe Mauer day here in the state of Minnesota. And then as you heard later in the program, Joe Mauer's number seven has been retired by the Minnesota Twins. They will have a ceremony later this coming season during the twenty one thousand nine campaign, but to give you some perspective on what it means to retire a number. Remember the Minnesota Twins were born in nineteen sixty one. This is only the ninth time in franchise history. They've retired a number. The others are Harmon Killebrew Tony Leyva who was here today. Rod Karoo who could not make it. He's out in southern California. But did send a letter that was read by Burt bly Levin, whose number is also retired Tom Kelly the two time. World Series champion manager of the twins and eighty seven and ninety one Kirby Puckett number thirty four can't herbeck who was here as well. And Jackie Robinson, whose number forty two has been retired by every major league baseball team. So Johm our joins that galaxy of stars it. It's really a huge honor Eric Nelson. It's certainly is. And will you put it in that kind of historical perspective? It makes you just I got chills when you said that because he really is going down with all of these heroes and this special special honor. And I think that really gives us a great perspective, and to have some of those people either there live or through a letter or just in spirit in the case of Kirby Puckett that in itself is another special layer to this day or. Yeah. For sure and we heard Burt bly Levin talk about Joe Mauer. We also heard can't her back and the letter from rod Karoo saying that he Antonio a marveled at the way Joe Mauer could get up to the plate and hit any pitch. And these two guys were absolutely amazing when they played and joining me now is the owner of the twins, Jim Paulette, and Jim first of all quite a day here at Durham hall, high isn't it? Yeah. I mean, it's exciting. I hope is exciting for the students. I mean, they're probably thinking what the heck's going on here? But I mean, I think that they get the impact of it. And that's important. I'm Don Joe wanted that for them. When did you know that the twins were going to retire, the number seventy because this is pretty soon after he called it quits. Well, I'm not gonna say that I didn't assume and encourage that we would one day retire is number for sure, are you and your question. How quickly you wanna do that? Once a person retires is there's no question about what y'all and I think that the organization felt that this summer would be. Appropriate and this would be appropriate occasion to tell Joe about it in a long eighteen year career. It's hard to believe we're talking about Joe in the past tense in the sense that hey, his numbers already retired. It's not hard for me. I'm sixty five years old. I get all this time passing stuff and suddenly everything's in the past tense. What has Joe meant to this franchise? We know about the MVP multiple gold glove awards as a catcher won a few batting titles. But what's he met beyond that? I mean, you saw those there was other role models up for what a person what an individual choir means or franchise, but to have a hometown person like Kent back. And now, I mean, it's just doesn't happen very much in. Maybe it'll never happen again for the twins. So we don't underestimate in any way the importance and significance of that continuity is the ball club announced a date when they're going to have the retirement ceremony downplay Dave announced that no I'm pretty sure they I suspect they know the date, but I I don't know. For sure what is and before. I let you go the winter meetings just concluded out in Las Vegas. We're heading toward the new year pretty soon. It's spring training time. Any message for the fans out there in twins territory about trying to rebound from last season. Well, I mean, I I would like to convey the same excitement to the fans that I have. I.

"I I would not want to comment on them. I do not know that name, you know, the thing with a chance for me. It's going to be convinced players you come here for a rebuild. That mode. But to our star players are so called star players starting to play better said, no Buxton and up the sort those type of players until they played better. A Minnesota just out a tractive landing split for free agent players. Yeah. And I think that's a fair analysis. Al, but this could turn quickly. If Buxton becomes the five tool player everybody thinks he's going to be an Miguel sano regains his all star form of two thousand seventeen. That's a big if but certainly a lot hinges on those two doesn't it? Oh, most definitely, you know. I hate to go back in the day. But. Prospect. I don't know how long the prospect status last until you suspect and for me, and I've not seen around the lake, but for me, it's been three years. What's been three years? We've been waiting for these guys developed, and I say if not worse this definitely a situation where are they going to show their wares or else, you're gotta have a tough season. You played on some teams eighty seven ninety one World Series championship ball clubs, great leadership. You had the puck Kirby Puckett. You had can't her back. You guys like that Burt bly Levin now, what would players like that have have told youngsters like Buxton and sano would they have helped them, you know, prop up so to speak. Well, you know, the first guys come into my mind when you talk about the core group that we add here doing that five year period. Yeah. Last Chuck, blah, blah. The ninety one World Series. They had guys can go to. And that's what that was the bus in the snow, and that type of player we're supposed to be providing of today. And now we're still talking about those guys trying to become established major league players. So I think what tuck it myself. And even though I was not a star player. Dan, gladden included. He was a star player as far as gladden Puckett herbeck. Those guys just made them feel comfortable where they didn't do like the load was on their back. No reserve. Kepler all these guys have tried to carry the load. Unfortunately, they did not add the theory. The trio that I mentioned before we're talking baseball here on a sports Saturday on your flagship poem for Minnesota Twins baseball without Newman the two time World Series champ. Al one thing about feel like you're going through the World Series parade again. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. I came out to the Carter sake. And fortunately opened the door and the alarm went off. So I am not established in that regard. I love technology in two thousand eighteen but okay, Brian dosier. I always thought he was the team leader in the room. He's been gone since late July who's the leader now on this ballclub who who's the guy that can rally the troops. So to speak or do what needs to be done because it can't always be the manager. No, not at all. And and unfortunately for the twins territory. You have a new manager coming in. If that had to happen. I would have said Paul Molitor the transition will be a lot easier. Molly was still here. But that's days gone by those days come by right now Mr. Kepler is coming into a situation where nine turn to establish himself as a rookie manager in the major leagues..

"Let me tell all your listeners out there. The key to driving fast is years ago, like in Chicago. When I played there, I would keep like, you know, baseball's there in case I got. Convenient. But a lot of these cops these days don't remember the play. So I have like I have Kris Bryant ball. I have any better Bill Murray's in my car. You give them an autograph. I know. I know I can imagine that look for my registration. You missed you buddy. You'd be back. You came up with the dodgers right? I did. Yeah. Okay. But did you pitch for the dodgers? Are you just in the organization? Okay. No, I came up and seventy. Six. I got called up from AA. September got injured and seventy. Seven got back at the end of seventy eight and then seventy nine. I was there eighty eighty one. I was with the club eighty one during that strike season with. They went on to win the World Series. I wasn't on that postseason roster. I rearranged Lasorda's office is you remember? And I ended up getting traded to Cleveland about a week later. Yeah. What was the build up to that when you go in and you get so upset with Tom into sort of that you just tear everything apart? Well, I I was told that I was going to get to start one more game and the second half of the season. It didn't matter. And Tommy started saying that the opportunity presented itself one thing to another and I just started rearranging you know his office a little bit. He didn't care for that. But a career really lifesaving moment was I was gonna throw his role in tear through the big Frank Sinatra wall. You've been, you saw all the pictures and albums all over the world to Tommy left Frank. And as I started to throw it, dusty Baker had come into the office and he grabbed a chair and he laughed, and he told me he said kid, he said, you're in enough trouble. You don't need Frank pissed off. So that's probably the number one reason I'm able to be with you today. He'll yeah, but if you didn't do that, what would have it? What would have happened with your career? If you didn't go crazy in Terre Tommy ill-assorted office, you know that that's a great question because I went to Cleveland and ran into a guy named Burt bly Levin and the first week of camp. He said, hey, come on the running with me, and he used to go run for like six to eight miles three or four times a week. Well, I couldn't. I couldn't keep up halfway with him and dancers the next thing you know at the end of camp, I'm running with it. I mean, I'm not fast in them, but I'm running with him. You and like a month into the season. Dave Garcia gave me an opportunity to get into the rotation as he handed me the baseball. He said, don't let anybody take it away from you. And that was eighty two. I was lucky to win that year eight Thailand eighty two. I was an. All starting eighty three eighty four course. You know, Chicago was was a lot of fun. A lot of that had to do with with seriously running into Burt bly Levin and Dave see a believe in. Let me start with the baseball last night. The cubs are out is the cubs dynasty over here go? No, no, no, no, no, not even close to being over. I will say that I, I would imagine THEO is gonna make some changes what they are. I don't know. You know, there were some guys that had off years. There were some free agent signings that that didn't work. There were a lot of things that that that didn't go well. But yet when you look at it, I mean they still won ninety five games..

"Radio network on the call our play of the day. Max Scherzer reaches three hundred. It's I know that's a difficult number to reach. I don't know why. I just assumed he had done it before eleven years in the league to eighty four was the highest he'd ever done three times a Cy Young award winner. You look at MLB record. How about this? He tied a major league baseball record for two hundred and fifty strikeouts in five consecutive seasons. He is tied for the major league baseball record for strikeouts in a nine in the game. He is pitched two no hitters twice at et. Al strikeout leader three times a wins leader, I told you about the Cy Young award as well six times in all star. But oddly enough just a hundred and fifty nine wins. We'll get to that in just a second. Max Scherzer what it meant to get that three hundred. Yeah, it was undermined with enough enough. Guys, talking about know understand what the milestone is definitely want to do it here at home. Defense. Unbelievable support. I mean when they're going crazy. He gives you an extra journal and boost, and I just want to go out there and accomplish that. And it was amazing feeling the fans behind you in the respect that they give so respect love it two thousand four hundred forty nine strikeouts. I think on his career right now. So he'll he'll probably assuming that he has twenty five hundred. So we need two more seasons to fifty should be able to do that. He's gonna end up with probably thirty if he stays healthy. Between thirty three and thirty six hundred strikeouts. If he stays healthy should end up in the vicinity of. Let's add one fifty nine two hundred maybe one hundred more winds now never seen any. Gentlemen back there in Culver city Garrett. Brett, you're my baseball guys. First ballot hall of Famer, right? Like, I know that his his Windsor a little bit low as of now with one fifty nine but first ballot hall of Famer right you, and I've talked about this before the the era of the three hundred pitcher is dead. Yup. I think two hundred is the new three hundred. Okay. So yes, I ballot. And so my theory on this always is it works the best with baseball. I think because of all the different positions was there. A period of like five years that you were one of the two or three best players at your position. Like clearly the best player at your position for a period of at least five years, and that's like undeniable that actually you can go six years right for six years. Max Scherzer has been one of the five best pitchers in baseball is that fair, and that's my exact criteria for hall of fame. Okay. Like, I say I say between five and ten if you're the best top five year position for five to ten years. Yes. And next has been you're correct. He's so good. Am. I I want to see if I have the right numbers updated on his on his career wins really fast. Pulling this up yet is one fifty nine. So that was updated hundred fifty nine wins twenty four two thousand four hundred forty nine strikeouts and a three point two two career era era. So. Where we project forward for strikeouts for him. What do you do you think if he pitches five more years right and between two hundred and two fifty per year? That's another thousand ends up around thirty five hundred that would put him in the vicinity of he'd be ahead of Greg. Greg Maddux is three thousand three hundred seventy one and he would be somewhere between Walter Johnson. Gaylord Perry, Don Sutton, and Tom Seaver. I think he pushes four thousand. I think to fifty five years not out of the question for him. I guess that's true. Like, even if he's not pitching great. He's still striking people out, right? So if he gets five more years of two fifty I'm terrible at math. That's five hundred fifteen hundred I don't know fifteen hundred. No five times four would be two thousand twelve fifty. Wasn't it? I I don't know. Do we have calculator anybody ever calculator? This is terrible really good radio going on right now. So to twelve is twelve fifty times five would be twelve fifty to fifty times two is five hundred double that thousand and then add another two fifty that were if he did that he would end up with three thousand six hundred ninety nine he would be to strike outs shy of tying Burt bly Levin at number five all time. Yeah. Yeah. Numbers are great. And I feel like you almost gets lost in the shuffle. I do I don't I don't know. A lot of like non diehard baseball fans that when they think of baseball think of sherzer, I think they think of Kershaw if the thinking of a pitcher..

"Radio network on the call our play of the day. Max Scherzer reaches three hundred. It's I know that's a difficult number to reach. I don't know why. I just assumed he had done it before eleven years in the league to eighty four was the highest he'd ever done three times a Cy Young award winner. You look at MLB record of this. He tied a major league baseball record for two hundred and fifty strikeouts in five consecutive seasons. He is tied for the major league baseball record for strikeouts in a nine in the game. He pitched two no hitters twice at L strikeout leader three times a wins leader, I told you about the Cy Young award as well six times in all star. But oddly enough just a hundred and fifty nine wins. We'll get to that in just a second. Max Scherzer, and what it meant to get that three hundred. Yeah. It was on my mind with enough enough guys talking about understanding what the milestone is definitely want to do it here at home. Defense. Unbelievable support. I mean when they're going crazy it gives you an extra drilling boost. And you just wanna go out there and accomplished add? And it was amazing feeling that the fans behind you in the respect that they give. So respect love it two thousand four hundred forty nine strikeouts. I think on his career right now. So he'll he'll probably assuming that he. That's twenty five hundred. So we need to more seasons or two fifty should be able to do that. He's gonna end up with probably thirty if he stays healthy. Between thirty three and thirty six hundred strikeouts. If he stays healthy should end up in the vicinity of. Let's add one fifty nine two hundred maybe one hundred more winds now, never Cindy. Gentlemen back there in Culver city Garrett. Brett, you're my baseball guys. First ballot hall of Famer, right? Like, I know that his his Windsor a little bit low as of now with one fifty nine but first ballot hall of fame. Right. You and I've talked about this before the the air of the three hundred pitcher is dead. Yup. I think two hundred is the new three hundred. Okay. So yes, I felt and so my theory on this always is and it works the best with baseball. I think because of all the different positions was there. A period of like five years that you were one of the two or three best players at your position. Like clearly the best player at your position for a period of at least five years, and that's like undeniable that actually you can go six years right for six years. Max Scherzer has been one of the five best pitchers in baseball. Is that fair? Yeah. And that's my exact criteria for hall of fame. Okay. I say I say between five and ten if you're the best top five your position for five to ten years. Yes. And it has been you're correct. He's so good. Am. I I want to see if I have the right numbers updated on his on his career wins really fast. Pulling this up yet is one fifty nine. So that was updated one hundred fifty nine wins twenty four two thousand four hundred forty nine strikeouts and a three point two two career era ERA so. Where we project forward I Reich out for him. What do you do you think if he pitches five more years right and between two hundred and two fifty per year? That's another thousand so we ended up thirty five hundred that would put him in the vicinity of he'd be ahead of Greg. Greg Maddux's three thousand three hundred seventy one and he would be somewhere between Walter Johnson. Gaylord Perry, Don Sutton, and Tom Seaver. I think he pushes four thousand. I think to fifty for five years not out of the question for him. I guess that's true. Like, even if he's not pitching great. He's still striking people out, right? So if he gets five more years of two fifty I'm terrible at math. That's twenty five hundred right now fifteen hundred fifteen hundred. No five times four would be two thousand twelve fifty. Wasn't it? I don't know. Do we have calculator? Anybody have a calculator. This is terrible. Really good radio going on right now. So too is twelve fifty times five would be twelve fifty to fifty times two is five hundred double that one thousand and then add another two fifty that. If he did that he would end up with three thousand six hundred ninety nine he would be to strike outs shy of tying Burt bly Levin at number five all time. Yeah. Yeah. Numbers are great. And I feel like you almost gets lost in the shuffle. I do I don't I don't know. A lot of like non diehard baseball fans that when they think of baseball think of sherzer, I think they think of Kershaw if the thinking of a pitcher. I think he's the most dominant right-hander in the last ten years. Yeah. I I can't name them. Name a more dominant right hander can't anyway. There. It is low max Scherzer love will do some NFL one return. Mike Jones USA today joins us NFL columnist calling the shots. Either as Ari NBC sports radio NBC, sports radio dot com. "Great example, I was when I was pitching my best pitch curveball. Okay. On the days that might cripple wasn't there, you're right. I would try to go to the throw more changeups you throw more than. These things, but the promise that's not where I can try. But it's I'm pro if my probably having a pretty lousy that is, that is true. That is true. And if you're leaving ten men, stranded. Team is having a very, very bad reading here. Just just because you're having a bad day doesn't mean you are still trying to find out what you wear absolutely are. But my point is not just that you can't do. It's difficult to even attempt to go and something away from what you've trained over and over. I know Broncos wasn't trained to throw as many times. He did against the New England Patriots, but he did, and it should. So you're right under pitcher was Spicer the me when I was growing up key. I don't know if you remember this doing ULC you're, you're, you're in your thirties. You remember when I was on when I was growing up a curse, I think think of it numbers on a clock on curb while when I was growing up with two, two, two, eight if you're right, right. Yeah. Or a sinker was from twelve to six, but not calling the six pitches curveballs. Sink different forever. There's different. There's the twelve six, which is the straight down. But when the you're talk sliders more three, two, nine, yeah. It happened to those the names of those, they just have different. They just call there. Nobody looks at the clock. Indoor ball goes from twelve to six, doesn't curb it sinks. It's also Irving, Linda. All right. It's killing an sinking screwball anymore. Kurt Fernando's out of the league? No, no, no. The other guy in straight pitch that's unnecessary, throw scruple. Not often if he does for Nando through screw. From bubble castio. Yeah, right. Yeah. So you so you had a good curb. Did you like Burt bly Levin? I had a good one. Curved. It may just run away from them, Ron, right. From the about the better. What was what was your hardest pitch? Like even a ninety s? No, I was in the high eighties, Greg Matic's that's yeah. Well, a lot of junk. Why did you make because I threw eighty eight seven miles an hour. Mejias can you go to? Everybody? Can't make an NBA draft. NFL. Hey, Mike Piazza was the sixty seventh round pick? I was. I was zero around pin pit. Nope, I didn't get picked. Let's grab The one more. village and Alex, Alex, you're on the morning show what's going on. What's the village? Alex valley village. Oh, valley Bill. All right. Got it. Yet. Dodgers didn't lose the World Series last year because of pitching or because of you Darvish they lost because they failed to convert with runners on in game two in game five in game seven. They had opportunities to score run and they couldn't do it. Were they down in those games when they were down or when they were up in game five win. They went to extra innings. They plenty of chances to take bigger lead instead of just tie the game or just take a one run lead, and then Astros came back and hit a few runs and tied the game. Again in again, kept going. They dodgers lost that game five because Clinton Kershaw couldn't hold onto a four run lead in the three run. That's why they lost. He gave him yams up quick. Yeah, yes. Door later in the game, they failed to pretty produced ones, but they had a fit of three, nothing lead. And and Clayton Kershaw gave both of those back and they. More opportunities to score runs and they couldn't hit singles, no, no. If you give Clayton Kershaw a forward, lean the three run leash Now out you're your hurt shown. Gerson. Any is starting pitchers. Give four zero. Four lead to. Yes, especially shot. Yeah. Talking about those kind of switch hitters your Khalil Mack nearly Phiri Aram that according to Rams COO Kevin demo off, didn't have a good enough offer. We'll get into it next mornings.
