More Memorial Day travel expected, despite high gas prices

"The big question on Memorial Day weekend is to drive or not to drive with gas prices painfully high triple-A says about 39 million people plan to travel over the long weekend Andrew gross says 88% of them plan to drive We've never had a Memorial Day travel period where so many people are going to be going by car At the same time you have these high gas prices Dan Johnson and Pennsylvania has a family graduation to attend I didn't have a choice and we just tucked it up and you know whatever the gas price is we have unfortunately we have to pay for Gross says the pandemic is part of the reason people just want to get out and go Oil market researcher Jim burkhart at S&P Global expects no relief from high gas prices through the summer Especially if Americans drive in great numbers which is what's expected to happen And there was little relief for flyers Prices for airline tickets are up to I'm Ed

Leadership Lessons from a US Army General Maj Gen John Gronski (retd) - burst 11

"A gunnery. Sergeant michael burkhart was the who was the explosive ordinance disposal team leader went down to that site with two young marines and they were going to conduct a post blast analysis to determine a tactics techniques procedures insurgents. Were using so we could try to prevent these attacks from happening again in the future and when gunny burkhardt got down there with two young rains was chaotic. The soldiers were cisterna. Seen the ad that a chaos there were two reporters from the omaha world herald newspaper there there were embedded reporter so anyway going burkhard gets down. There sees the destroyed up. Armored humvee sees a crater near that up armored humvee bow four feet in diameter a couple of feet deep makes an assumption that that's for that roadside bomb that destroyed that humvee was placed jumps down into crater. Take a closer look as soon as he did that. He realized he made a mistake because he could see in the dirt in front of him to artillery shells. Red detonation cord running in the nose was a roadside bomb. That an insurgent have placed their so. He took his k bar knife. Cut the red debt. Detonation cord to neutralize that roadside bomb. He didn't see a third artillery shell into dirt behind him in that crater. An insurgent was off in the distance. Hit a button. On a that nation device that artillery shell exploded not going burkhardt about fifteen feet into the air lands on the dirt road unconscious pants soaked with blood. Our soldiers call a medevac helicopter. Ride away go up tomb start. Cut his pants off. Start tending to his boons after few minutes burkhart regains consciousness. The soldiers couldn't believe that and and he's laying there and he asked the soldiers if he has both of his legs because they had no no sensation from the waist down. They sure to me had both of his legs. They continue to work on 'em couple minutes later. He gets a tingling sensation in his legs. He tells the soldiers he wants to stand up. Soldiers couldn't believe that this guy had just gotten blown up and so we struggles to his feet. He standing there to soldiers around him. The medevac helicopter comes in lands on the ground behind them. The soldiers point to the stretcher On the ground in front of the misogony. We've got you know. Gotta put you on a stretcher and carry you to that helicopter. He looks at the soldiers and he says i'm not going to have you carry me that helicopter on a stretcher. I'm going to walk there under my own power. Because i don't want the insurgents of the pleasure of seeing me being carried that helicopter and easy. He says that he raises his hand into the air and gives the insurgents which i will call a one finger salute reporter reported from the omaha world heritage takes a picture of him standing there Groin protector. you know. In in front of his private area there. No pants on finger thrown up into the air soldiers around him. You'd say the helicopter the background. That picture became an iconic picture of the iraq war but what is deleted Point of the story. And the reason i tell this story and the reason. I think it's important. The leadership point of this story is member told you. He had two young marines with them that day. He knew he was going to have to recover from his wounds. He knew what all the roadside bomb attacks were getting that those two young marines were going to have to be out there probably later on that day routes realizing roadside bombs. The reason he wanted to walk to that helicopter instead of being carried there had nothing at all to do with what he thought and surgeons for thinking. He wanted to walk to that helicopter so we would not shatter the confidence of those too young marines. Pseudo leadership point is even after getting blown up ten minutes earlier. His main concern was not with his own wounds. His bank concern was with those two young marines. Who he was leading an isn't that what leadership is all about. And we talked about that looking out for the welfare of those you lead rather than your own welfare and that's exactly what gandhi burkhardt exemplified that day. And that's why. I like to tell that story that i read read that story. I had to read it again. Because i was laughing because i could just see i. I have friends who are marines right by the way. There's no such thing as an ex marine okay. the just doesn't exist. I've been told that countless times by my friend there's just no such thing they they may be quote unquote have retired at the end of their name. But they're still all. And and and i just thinking about them go. That's exactly what jimmy would. That's exactly what he would have done. That's what bob would have done. He would have done the same thing. I i can. Just see it. I just great story but it was truly the surprise in that lesson was not. I thought it was going to be resiliency. It is but the point is that he cared so much about making sure that those other two young marines were their that their mental emotional state was not shaken. Yeah and you know jay that think about this as leaders we face adversity almost every day in whatever organization were leading the some degree and and sometimes things get tough honest and the point is as a leader. You can't be thinking. I'm an figuratively. I'll use this. You know you can't be thinking. I'm cold i i'm hungry. You know i. I'm shivering right. No you you've got to show those you're leading that you know what i've got the resiliency to overcome this. And because i do you have the resiliency to overcome. They might be called. I might be hungry. I might be weak. But i'm going to take care of you before i take care of myself. And that's the essence of leadership. We underestimate the modeling of behavior. Don't we when it comes to leadership absolutely. Yeah and you know what the other thing i learned in my forty years of leading soldiers also leading teams in the business sector. Is the people you lead are always watching you practice. You know you could. You could put down in writing. What your leadership philosophy is or you could verbally give some guidance about behaviors. You're looking for but those you lead are going to be watching to see you. Know how do you adhere your own guidance. Behaviors that you're looking for you. Exemplify those behaviors and your followers are always watching and your actions speak so much larger than larger louder than your words. Do

"Jose with Brad Burkhart reporting it from San Francisco and I was Bernie Sanders being a Bernie Sanders and saying exactly the right thing this is bigger than politics is he you know this is bigger than are you staying in the race although like you just reported brush and I I was getting myself Tulsi Gabbard dropped out and I'm sure many people are like she was still in the land yeah she's a Dorothy Joe Biden which you know I I think that's also the right movie looks like it's going to be the nominee but a politicking right now for campaign campaigning for president it's there's no report there's really no real we will see what you do as you handle this crisis to decide whether we want you to be our leader this is Donald trump's moment to shine or to prove his failure and he's already faced a valid criticism for him disbanding of that pandemic task force back in twenty eighteen even though he does not think he is responsible for that you know he's going to face criticism for turning away the W. H. O. tasks the CDC said they were gonna make their own no one seemed to believe or think it was comprehensible that the CDC tests would be flawed but it was an output is behind valuable weeks in testing but now we're wrapping up and it's moving forward how we handle this what economic moves we make which we hope to learn about more we're waiting for that press conference so that the press conference from the White House task force all the corona virus to begin we will carry that for you live here on KGO we're also going to have executive director Peter Lee from covered California on I know a lot of people are wondering you know I have a job I get my health insurance through my job if I get laid off what happens to my health and earns I might not get the coronavirus when if I break my arm what if I come down with the flu what if some other accident happens in life still goes on I do but I do think you know unless you have little kids like me that like to slide on floors and socked feet the your risk of accidents decreases when out on the roads car accidents things like that but things happen and and do you have health care still if you're laid off well I went in you heard from mark Nieto saying yet yeah there's not a lot of traffic out there but that almost makes it more dangerous because the crash has become more spectacular and right you be amazed at how many speeders I've been seeing on my commute in and out of the city it's just it's like people are taking free range just Florida it's yeah I mean it was when I started this new show three weeks ago I go I leave the work before four o'clock in the morning and it's amazing I'm going a little over the speed limit and people are just zipping by because there's not that many people on the roads I can only imagine what they're doing now and it's just there was a great picture I forget who posted it it might have been my producer John Daly I'm not quite sure but it was a picture of the bay bridge and there was one car driving on it and it was wow yeah I saw wow it's just so it was just a sight to see and I just it really puts into perspective I hope you know Jake tapper inside J. Gupta with CNN a look at those pictures and understanding how few people are actually out on the streets of San Francisco yeah we play that that sound clip of Bernie Sanders at the top of the show and he's taking it seriously because politicians obviously come in contact with all kinds of people with all those people exposed during the C. pac conference well senator Ted Cruz also was under quarantine and he was speaking to reporters after he just got out of his own quarantine listen I feel great I feel strong at ten days and self quarantine was at home was in my living room working at home and so on the phone on email and phone internet but it's good to be back in the Senate well yeah it's good to be back at work although you know there's gonna be questions as we learn more about this virus of how long you should stay home they are starting to see it spread through Congress I mean we have you talk August ma'am Ben McAdams saying he tested positive for covert nineteen Florida congressman has tested positive for covert nineteen congressman Mario D. az Balart tested positive for covert nineteen so those are it keeps hitting every corner of the United States yeah it doesn't seem like much of a hoax now does it it's amazing how people's perspective changes when it just smacks you in the face with the reality attackers also gave some insight on what it's like to be in quarantine nice leverage slept alone Heidi slept.

"Can't be Burkhart sporting goods the box point is Jack Wagner on WTMJ well this is a think Patrick's day like no other effectively at least around here St Patrick's day has largely been canceled out let me back into this topic last week if you looked at some of the beaches down in Florida like the beaches Miami beach in fort Lauderdale they were packed with people you know we've been being told you know social distancing keep your distance people were were out in droves and as a result what happened is that the mayors with account executives and some of the communities down in South Florida they announced they would close the beaches because that was the only way that they could stop people from coming out and congregating well just yesterday if you look at some of the pictures Tampa on the Gulf side the end people flocking to the beaches and again you know people on top of each other spring break is coming up so there there's this issue about you know how do you keep people particularly young people who aren't necessarily worried about getting the corona virus despite the fact that they might be in carriers to bring it back and give it to others you know how how do you force them into knots not going out with large groups of people because if you just ask them till at least if we look at what happened Florida over the weekend just asking people to do that does not work all right Saint Patrick's day one of the big days of celebration right I mean parties all over if you run a bar in general an Irish bar in particular means St Patrick's day is it's sort of like you know the Christmas season for retailers it's one of those times work everybody's Irish everybody comes out everybody has a a good time all right so the concern that people had is how are we going to stop hundreds and hundreds of people from cramming into some of the small bars in the area and in doing what they typically do on St Patrick's day well you will recall over the course of the last week the initial instructions were okay people shouldn't gather in groups larger than five hundred and then that changed over the weekend the instructions were people should not gather in groups larger than fifty which led to the order issued by governor Tony Evers yesterday about how bars and restaurants we're going to be limited to fifty people so you could set yourself up for Kerry out but as far as dining in or going into the bars he'd be limited to fifty people and I actually know a couple bar owners and restaurant owners who were trying to wrestle with us how are we going to be able to do this eccentric cetera then yesterday afternoon president trump had a news conference and for the first time that fifty person number went down to ten you should not gather in groups larger than ten and effectively that if you're going to follow that instruction it really means that for is any sort of eat in dining in a bar in a restaurant at off the books if you're gonna really limited to ten people that that's just not practical anymore and in the wake of that last evening you had to the Milwaukee county executive Chris ably and the mayor of Milwaukee hi Tom Barrett who came out and issued an order to bars and restaurants that was effective at twelve oh one this morning sensor on the eve of Saint Patrick's day and that order effectively closed all bars and all restaurants for everything except carry out delivery and curbside service and this was in an effort they said we're just going to close down these places where people go and interact and we're closing down for the foreseeable future by our order with the idea that we're going to try to do everything we can to stop the spread because I think the concern is if we trusted people to social distance themselves some would but others would and those people who didn't they would then become carriers so in Milwaukee county affected Philly restaurants and bars have been shut down except for Kerry out delivery and curbside service that order only applies to Milwaukee the city of in Milwaukee county so in our surround in counties you've got the governor's order which says limited to no more than fifty people but as a practical matter I know a lot of businesses are saying it's just not worth it for us to try to stay open with that limitation our number is eight five five six one six one six twenty the second mortgage talking text light okay here here is my Goldilocks question all right in Milwaukee county we have now said bars and restaurants closed down for the foreseeable future except carry out delivery and curbside service no eating in if your typical St Patrick's day regimen was going down sitting at the bar getting yourself a corned beef sandwich and having a couple glasses of Guinness you are not able to do that and as a result of that like I say a lot of bars are just saying you know we're it doesn't make any sense for us to just try to stay open for the occasional carry out thing so we're closing down this is my question was this too extreme to order all bars and restaurants closed down or alternatively should should this be the norm across the state because like I say "Show Monday morning at six AM right and you know her Prester John Daly and Bret Burkhart every and and sherry simply eat eat and they are all excited and we are to be listening I'll be out of course I'll be sitting around in my underwear which always makes people Starbucks nervous anyway so what happened this week on Wall Street yes thirty five hundred point selloff I'm you know what I'm gonna say this I it was an historically bad week for the market and they saw a little bit of everything but you know I did what they didn't see it in my opinion is panic it said that most people talk about they say the market trading volumes about where would be in a situation like that I mean you could have to panic you got you have twenty five thousand points and it went down from like you know twenty twenty nine to down to like what is it right to it today that is above the curb stay above twenty five I think a drop below twenty five actually did drop below twenty five one point and then I I don't I can back up anyway you know what the selling was aggressive he didn't seem like it was panic that's that's what my you know so I I was hesitant to call you know my guy UBS and but I did I call them today I was kind of curious but the one stock we cap which is an energy stock that went down on Wednesday and Thursday and but came up today and I was just talking to me said now people weren't panicking I think you know the large big money stand in there because people you know if if you're like you know I mean I did call you know the our our our company investing I put that into you know I took that out of the market and put it into bonds and CDS you know safer stuff I thought and I you know I I just don't I don't think it's a panic situation you know I think that it's gonna it will come back here's the key again if next week it takes it below twenty twenty percent of the time it's about ten percent is a correction right a ten percent drop the correction twenty percent it's a bear market drops twenty percent next week over the high then it's probably gonna take like six months to come back just the worst news yeah for the president and to that end you have trump commenting today and he says he you know he's saying stuff that no president used to say but he's out he's saying he hopes the fed will get involved soon it took combat market sell off and again when the fed lowers the interest rate what that means is it's a lower interest rate for the money that banks land other banks so banks can't lend money they don't half right so they have to borrow money and they did they could borrow from the fed but the fed wants in the bar from each other so that's the interest rate so that that that ends up to be a a number that affects you if you're a buyer we talk about with you know Kevin Lyons thank finding the guy endorse you if whatever interest rate you're paying on your home I was on I mean to do a commercial for him but he's in the business of helping people get so you know I mean the people like that I thought after that six year old guy that called me that said that you know he was thinking about selling and he stayed in and he's out he's not working you know but there you know the probably will get back up in the next year at the very least back UP to near twenty nine level because you know the the economy still looks out of.
