"Welcome back. Alright. As I mentioned, we're going back to back to back And our number one. So if you're on hold, you want to stay there have not tough on there is toll free 1 806 368686 as promised. We're joined right now by the U. S men's national team. Head coach. He was named head coach in December. 2018 US defeated Mexico 3 to 2 and That is a huge win for them. Next up Costa Rica and that is tomorrow night. Seven PM He's a good friend of the program. He is Greg Burke Halter. Gregor is so good to have you back. How are you? Hey, Jim. How's it going? Good. Good, Greg. What? A wild night Sunday that game against Mexico, I think had a little bit of everything. You had a red card for a coach. You had multiple shoving matches. You had a penalty scored the 114th minute of penalty saved in the one 24th and so much more before we get into all those details, Greg, I want to ask when you look back on that match one of the moments or maybe the emotions that stick out to you the most Well as you mentioned all the events that happened in the game, and that's what makes sport beautiful. You know, just all these different storylines happening within 120 minute game. You know what stands out to me is is for a young team. Now, This is the younger youngest lineup we've ever played in the final. How poised we remain and how calm we were, You know, no matter what happened. We gave up a goal in the second minute of the game, which which you know doesn't happen. Normally and you know the guys just hung in there and there was resilient and kept working, and we fought our way back into the game. And then there's all the craziness is happening around with the fans and the players and the referee. Ask our guys just stayed really calm. We're able to to get the win. We're talking a great Burkhalter. I certainly want to get into that chaos and craziness that happened and I was going to say to you given the youth of this team has significant it was For a team that young to start and maintenance composure on the final. And you did answer that. You know, from the outside, Greg. It feels like this is a team that really loves each other and will really go to battle for each other. You're obviously much closer to it. Does it feel that way to you? Do you feel that bond within These guys are warriors, and, you know, it's great to be a part of it once when we got in the huddle before overtime for the overtime period. You know it wasn't me that was leading it. It was the players and they just got everyone together and say, Guys, listen, this is it. We're going for it, And that was a great That was a great step when you know the coach can sit back. And be part of it, and the players actually take ownership and what's happening on the field and you know it's again having a really young group. It's impressive to see that type of leadership. We're talking to Greg Burke Halter Greg, The start of the match got off to a pretty challenging kind of a rocky start. When Mark Mackenzie's ball off the back was picked off potato Corona scored inside the first two minutes. What was going through your head in that moment? Well, you have a game plan, and and the game plan doesn't account for that happening. It was right away. We had to kind of change our pressure change how we're going to adapt to the game after two minutes and you know And give Mark McKenzie a ton of credit because he hung in there. He's a young player first time playing in a final act it and after making a mistake like that early in the game, he hung in there and actually had had an excellent game. So You know, it's it's good to see the resiliency of him and the team in general, just how we responded. Greg Burke Halter is joining us and then Greg Mexico appeared to score again to take a two. Nothing lead in the 24th minute, but it was wiped away after V A R ruling, and then three minutes later. Fiorina scored. I want to get into Western McKinney's dominance in the air in a moment, but how impressed were you with the way ran a handle the pressure of that moment in a final against arrival at the age of 18? It's insane to think about it. You know, these guys are all playing at a really high level in Europe. But what I told them coming into camp as these CONCACAF games are nothing like they've experienced in Europe. Um you know, just a different level of urgency, different level of physicality. The game is a lot more chaotic and the games are used to And to see how our younger players handled that particular Geo to step up in a final play that well, you know, it's really impressive. Gregg Berhalter joining us once again and then you lose goalkeeper Zack Steffen injury. Ethan Horvath comes in Mexico Stores scores 62 1 lead and again, you can see where young team maybe might crumble. But McKenney scored just minutes later. How huge was he throughout the game, but especially in the air. He was named best player of the tournament and in his performance in the final was something that was something to behold. You know, he got his head on four corner care, which is extremely rare to happen in one game. Know tons of distance When you talk about amount of ground he covered throughout the game was equally impressive. And you know, it was an example of a guy has taken over again, and Weston had a really strong performance center..

"Like i don't need or want money to find fulfillment. I don't want validation from like a career achievement. I just wanna do. A guy puts them a heart. And when i'm seeing that life come from it in obscene. Bring life to other people. That's what invigorates me. So that's where that that progression has been in. It's always come from accepting some of the men gets put my life in and allowing them to speak into me when i'm transparent into say. Here's here's my struggle. I want to act like. I've got it all together but i really don't and if i can be vulnerable in. That industry helped me and it allows god to use those people to help me pull me ford whenever i project. I know what i'm doing. I got it together because there is that trip of like when you have some success do confidence. Some confidence is good. But then it becomes this cockiness of like what i'm doing. I'm good man. And i want you to think that i'm good. And so then. I won't be real and raw. And that's my. My struggle is a preacher's kid. I've learned you're supposed to appear the right way. Because that's how you are. Because you're the preacher's kid and you gotta look like you've got it together and so being raw and transparent. That's what gives me breakthrough. And that's what's led to some of these leveling up places where i'm like i'm more connected to my purpose and using my gifts. Yeah that's powerful man. That's story a about your your your former co worker in my dad that brought chills throughout my my entire body and it took me to not have one of the one of the guys that runs the the men's group at at the church at itin. "So like when you look at the schedule for next year and all the matches that you're going to have to play, how important was it to have that match last week and spend that time with domestic players? It was huge because we're you know, next year we're gonna have to balance out the roster. We can't use the same players all year. We have nations. They finals were friendlies. We have the Gold Cup and then we have welcome qualifying. So we know we're gonna have to mix up the roster certain stages and it's good to identify those players and start working with them and get them comfortable The way we want to play. Quick. How about this? I mean, like you've got 10 U. S soccer players on Champions League rosters right about now, which is the most ever more specifically when you vent his play Barcelona The two Americans were playing on the biggest stage for the biggest clubs like how special was that moment, and not just for you as the national team coach, But for every American who dreams applying on the biggest stage, and now they see that that is, in fact possible. It was amazing. You know, I've we were watching the game with the team in the mail room We had We had it on and I'm looking across the room and looking at the faces of the players and what I really felt. Woz. There's this belief Belief that they can get their also, and we haven't always had that. So to see two guys playing against each other one guy scorn an amazing goal. You know it was. It's a really big step for American soccer. Like like, how big of a step it's not in your personality to get, you know, too carried away with this, But I'm gonna pose the question like this. You've got four Americans who scored in Champions League matches and again. I don't get too carried away either. But are we talking potentially about maybe Ah, Golden generation or is it too early for something like that? No, I think you know, I think we can say that. I really do. You know, we we've never had this much town before. And when I looked at the roster, it's young talent, You know, So we have players under the age of 23 that You know that are really, really good. And if you project out and you think about, you know, first qualifying for 2022, which would be a big step and then performing well, 2022. But then really thinking about this age is going to be primed in 2026. How do we take advantage of that? With the world with hosting the World Cup in our own countries? It will It could be a great moment for U. S. Soccer. You know, we're talking about 21 players making their debuts in the four national team matches this year. 19 of these players were under the age of 23. So how do you go about supporting these young players as they grow and mature in the game? What's the process for that? You know, we have an amazing staff, whether that's medical sports science or the technical staff, So we support them with, you know, with workouts with getting all the information that to do with the clubs and working together with the clothes to make sure they're developing in all areas. You know, we Azad coaching staff were watching their games at all times. We watch. We provide clips for them of things they can improve on and it's just really understanding that they're still in development period of their career where they need all this support. We're talking soccer. Greg Burkhalter is the U. S. Men's national soccer team head coach. Couple of more moments with him, So you start things off next year and you've got a friendly date in January. By the time summer rolls around, it's gonna get busy with the nation's lead the gold cop, and then you've got a really packed schedule in the fall, and it's an Olympic year. So a lot going on What do you early thoughts for 2021 then? So I think we're going by the end of 2021. We're going to know exactly where we stand. And I expect this group to be able to compete for trophies in the nation's even go cup. Hopefully You know when those events or or the you know, show really well in those events and then and then in walk up qualifying really start to chip away at qualifying. You know, we'll have, um eight games in the fall, 21. And that could make a big dent towards qualifying already good results in those games. So it's gonna be a big year for the group on DSA, certainly excited for what's ahead, So finally let me get to take it. One step back records, The listeners know or many of them know you and I are friends and have been for a number of years, but it's been just over two years since you were named head coach and then came on the show for the first time. What of the last two years been like for you? It's been fun. It's been a process of learning. Learning what you know, international coach what the job is. Really? Um you know you you don't really know how much time you have. And in trying to maximize that time when you're outside of camp And then I think the best part of it. Jim has been the progression that the team has made really seeing improvements in the team and just being, you know, stick into the process, not getting carried away and just chipping away day after day. Just see these improvements. It just seems to me like they're correct me if I'm wrong, But I see moments not only improvement, but it seems like Greg. You can see it's tangible like the confidence The excitement, even the flare. It's not necessarily something. The U. S. Soccer has been known for the past, right. Do you think that's a fair statement? I think we have players that are eager and they're hungry, and they want to show that they're good and they're confident and and that's always a good thing. So yeah, I could definitely see some of that great. Burkhalter is the U. S men's national team head coach. There are 311 on the season. And looking Very, very good, Greg. I really appreciate it Great to hear your voice and great They're here to the family's doing so well all our best from mind to yours and thanks for coming on the show. Thanks, Jim. Say. How'd everyone great talking to you, too, Greg? Thank you very much, much respect. You know, and again if you're kind of late to this party, like Wait, what? Rome. You're talking soccer? Yes. Talking soccer intelligently? Yes. You're talking respectfully. Yes, men. This is not 1994. And if you don't know the background on that very quickly, Greg Burkhalter and I Kids play baseball together. And we lived in the same area a number of years back here in Cali and became friends and we would sit the stands and talk and I always found him to be. You know, obviously an amazing athlete. He was a great great player, national player. But you know, from a standpoint, just like a cerebral standpoint, he I always found him to be fascinating. Very smart, Very analytical. You know, pretty serious like me. But a huge sports fan, huge sports fan and we were just can't chop it up in the stands and talk about the kids and talk about sports, and he gave his takes on lots of things I found to be fascinating and always knew that he was not to be long for it like he he was extremely well thought of in the sport, and I knew that he would be a coach and he would have a lot of opportunities and he did, and he left and he ran with it. And I was just so pumped for him..

"I will say this He did go on this missive about the Magic Kingdom and Disneyworld in the lawsuit as it relates to the Corona virus, which I really didn't see where that fit in. But it was like I wasn't even Corona virus back in 8.9 Aye. Flip through a 10 pages to get to what I was before. I was very confusing. But for I guess making the argument their multi $1,000,000,000 company and they can Ford not to do things like that. But we do know is then Hester Burkhalter is his grandmother was down here with her husband, their daughter that has some sort of a mental disability and two of her Children, and they were staying at Fort Wilderness in a travel trailer. They want to save some money. But he had been there lifelong dream to go to Disney and see the park's so the first day they got here. They went to AB calm down on day two. They got up early one to the Magic Kingdom and were stopped at security as we all are, And they asked her to empty your purse, which all women have to do when you go in through security, and they found a dropper bottle that says CBD Oil, 0% T. H C. They asked her if she knew if there was th CNN, she admitted that she had no clue. I just you know, the bottle says it doesn't so there's body camera footage where the Orange County deputies were working Security, said Quote. If we tested and doesn't test positive for T H C, then she can have it back. They do the field test on it, and another deputy says This does not contain to see a teach C. It's not criminal. It's not criminal to have that. As a prosecutor. How did they arrested? That's where it should have ended. So at this point, they pushed the issue and you've got thousands of people, you know, piling pass. Have you ever been to Magic Kingdom? You know how it is The oil's She's a grandmother, right? She has arthritis she had about legitimate use for its that figures into the lawsuit. So what will cross the line for me? Is they then they decided that they were going to keep searching her purse. They found $1600 in cash in there, so they're radar. Carol Grady is a drug dealer and peddling the stuff in the part. If you went to Disney, and I'm going to age myself here, back in the early eighties, like my mom used to take me and my dad, she carried a large roll of cash inside her broad that she paid for everything with she was not a drug dealer. Back then it would not be classified as one. So it escalates. From there, they decided to do another field test. They say it tested positive the second time for T H C. And then they get this whole conversation that you know this is hashish, oil and all that sort of stuff, which it wasn't They end up arresting her. The arrest was horrendous. According to her, she threw up in the parking lot of the Magic kingdom in front of other people. They try to put her in the squad car with another inmate who was already in there. And then they get her to the geo. And they asked her to consent or they make her consent to a body cavity search. Are you serious? That's what the legend the lawsuit. And so she was in the search area. They gave her the deal uniform and he was not for and she credits one female deputy who took pity on her and said. Yo, Are you sitting here? Ms. Ah, Burkhalter. Your paper Rock has already been processed. Well, the deputy tries to call her husband to come pick her up. The husband's hysterical and basically that he's gonna have a heart attack. So the deputy, like Is there someone else I can call for you to arrange decisions of calling average son in North Carolina to arrange the bail. So the husband was now hysterical can come get her out of jail and mind you there wasn't thrown out of Disney roll altogether and trespass or the parts for the time being so There's a place on Earth for them. Yeah, it was She asking for a couple 1,000,000 bucks right? Didn't see where they a lot times of these lawsuits. They don't actually asked for a specific amount..

"It just feels like yet another blow to veterans and students. In order to help predatory for profit colleges that keep getting caught by the federal and state law enforcement. Breaking the law the way said by email that the schools University of Phoenix produce, Eo Education Corporation, Bellevue University and Temple University, have taken adequate corrective measures that included things like restitution, changes in leadership and cooperation with the reviews. And says it will ensure the school stay in compliance to prevent future violations. But some veterans say that's not enough. We always say in the military, you know you leave no soldier behind. And I definitely feel left behind by my president by our government. Tasha Burkhalter lost all her G I bill money and went into debt at T. T Tech in Indiana. When she graduated, she discovered that her four year degree in criminal justice was worthless, not recognized by employers or other schools. TT went bankrupt in 2016 after the government banned it from federal student aid following years of complaints. A bipartisan bill would have provided debt forgiveness to vets defrauded by schools like tea, but President Trump vetoed it in May. Now, Burkhalter says, she's struggling to feed her family. It definitely is an elephant on your back. You know, I don't have $100,000 to just go pay it off and be done with it. We have four kids, You know, I'm married. Pills. Don't stop. You know things happen. Our faith keeps us We believe in God, and that's kind of just was keeping us afloat.
