"Unfortunately detects the burke gilman trail. Asya my own feelings on that you shouldn't be on the burke gilman trail with one of those devices. So you're kidding. No no no. Motorized vehicles including ra- rad power. Bike should not be alright extremely dangerous. One way back. I actually agree with you on this but they are allowed. They are allowed. They shouldn't be there dangerous. You sound like me. Because but i've i've actually you sound like me about two years ago i've maybe because i've developed but i will say i am very careful shared by shared scooter. No matter what helmet where i on helmet. Here's the other thing that stood out to me your total cost on the four or five however many scooters you used to get to west seattle was what thirty some thirty five thirty dollars and fourteen dollars and fourteen cents and look at all the pain and crap you had to go through like you had to pay thirty dollars to do that. Like pay the extra you know nineteen dollars and sit in the back and have a nice lovely conversation or do email or listen to music and do it. Whenever it's raining or snowing. I would say that a seven mile scooter. Right is not the norm nor the typical use case that they would have envisioned so i think that thirty dollars a little bit weird because typically you'd be writing you know a fraction of that amount and be paying seven or eight bucks. That's that's the deal so long story short whereas before we had kind of a unorthodox winner in the one wheeled device i don't i can't remember what the call tim's thing but it's it's one way one wheeler yeah net. This time. i feel like this exercise really proved that electric bikes are probably right in the sweet spot. Right now they are the kinds of transportation that is the most efficient. Let you take the quickest route and yet does it without requiring full physical power. Yeah and probably the cheapest too because how many lift rides would you do before you can actually buy one of these electric bikes now. Maybe ten it's true and you're in the market for one. So that's that's good now. Obviously the weather becomes an issue. Now we should say the traditional bicyclists who bike the entire route. Mike lewis our reporter. Who's a fantastic biker. He probably could have won this.

"Avenue. And it was just as it was getting more and more tangled up and the great northern was coming from the north northern Pacific was coming from the south and northern civic wanted to build a huge, railroad depot right on the waterfront, big freight shed. It would have been. Very much. Like what the Alaskan way has done to the waterfront for the last seventy five years being this big barrier between the downtown and the beautiful environs of Elliott bay. And so James j hill who is famously known as the empire builder. The guy behind the great northern railroad. He envisioned this idea of taking all that big mess of railroad. Tracks off the waterfront and putting them under downtown Seattle in a mile long tunnel. And he had help from guiding Burke who was an attorney who one of the guys who the Burke Gilman trail is named after. And what are the city city engineers in those days? It wasn't just all James j Hill's idea, but he very much promoted the fact that you could clean up this mess and get northern Pacific and great northern to cooperate. And they did and they built this tunnel all private dollars. They dug under the city. It's about a mile. Did they dig I mean, how do you dig something like that by hand? Well, you have picks and shovels have pneumatic drills. It wasn't as if they were going through bedrock. My understanding this glacial soil, right? So it's just a took them two years. They built it on time on budget along on. Did Bertha take again was it eleven years. I just think. They had a drill with Bertha within a driller if they had. So I think it was all it was really nice shovels. They did Bertha. Okay. So actually, they headed electric railroad for this old tunnel to move the dirt as they were digging it and then create all this title fill land around the stadiums and stuff that's all dirt dug from under the city. I'm not sure I'm gonna cubic feet. It was it was a lot of material they had to take out and put two tracks under the city it opened back in nineteen. Oh, five and kept the waterfront free and clear. We still had train tracks on the waterfront, so you could get freight off of ships and onto ships the whole notion of moving all that traffic, major traffic north and south through town got away from the waterfront and under the city and the south portal is down there. Not too far from international district a block or two north of there in the north portals over by Virginia street down on the water kind of knew where the Alaska way used to be. And it's something like twelve thousand truckloads worth of material go through it every day twenty four hundred passengers, and it's still one thousand nine hundred technology. It's in perfect shape wasn't affected by the two thousand one earthquake right there. That's remarkable that something that folks Doug, basically about hand. Yeah. It wasn't bothered by the earthquake. It's it's an I know that I don't think that the birth tunnel was a good idea for a number of reasons. But that aside that speaks to just this incredible intelligence. These people have like you with infrastructure. Yeah. For me. It's engineers people who can look at something as oh, here's how to dig under a mountain. That's why get freaked out when the sound transit engineers forgot that water sloshed on the I ninety bridge. They did I got blessing for admitting that they you know, they got the thing plan. And then someone said, hey, how I was looking at the vectors. We got the water going straight up and down. What do you? Mean well pickets law. She's always look at the what? And so, but I do I look at the engine hearing involved in that in that tunnel, and who were these okay? So I could go really deep on this. And I'm sorry for taking a little bit. Of course. But I read about the founders of Seattle kind of con artists like they had the first the first president of the university of Washington didn't even graduate college. Then the design was for Seattle to be west Seattle. But then the guy who founded Seattle left, and they're like, hey, let's build it across the bay. I heard all these stories folks from San Francisco coming up saying, hey, do you sell lumber like, yeah. Exactly. Yeah. We'll have. It has no idea. I get the trees down the U dub is rape. Because the first for the first twenty five years, the university Washington was like a daycare or maybe a high school didn't graduate anybody with a college degree it opened in eighteen sixty one. I think the first college graduate was in the eighteen eighties. Arthur daddy and Daniel Bagley saw the value of getting the state university. Because Walla Walla got the prison Olympic at the state capital. Nobody wanted the university, but Arthur, Danny Daniel bag. We thought let's get the university will Arthur Denny donated some land which were the Olympic hotel is now big beautiful piece of land built this gorgeous building. But it took him a couple of decades to make it real. And it's paid off far more than the capital of the prisons ever gonna pay off for either of those two cities getting the U dub and Seattle was just a feather in the cap of of Danny and Bagley and we owe them so much for pulling off that they hoodwinked the territorial legislature into giving them. What people thought was worthless. Well, I mean, the hoodwinking now, let's get to the hoodwinking in an historical sense. And here's here's why I feel the way I do. Well, it's not the whole reason. But I look at the the the obsess. Session with light rail. And I know people look I listened last night. Aaron Mason was filling in for g Scott known people like it. Okay. I contend that with with the technology. We know is coming. I contend this new railroad grabs a lot like the other one where they railroads got paid per mile of track laid for money so henceforth through the the North Dakota some of the trains zigzagged and made weird loops. And so I mean, they were given land in exchange for building green land grants and sell the land. Yeah, they they did. And then go into this town, and then people would buy stock in that town of build their they short northern Pacific. Totally played Tacoma against us this way, people in CLA hated the northern Pacific eighty nine. Okay. So I just look at people like the railroad people read their history and said man, there's money when you can get the feds paper something. You think that this is completely different? I think. Yeah. I mean, I don't see don't I don't have the issue with sound transit the lot of people. Have it sound transit. I think when you build commuter rail in a city like Seattle that's forty years too late and building or thirty years late and building it it takes at least two generation for it to make a noticeable difference. In terms of settlement patterns traffic patterns, and we have to play the big game. The big long game. We play the short game with Seattle. So you're gonna losing it a screw things up. So this is a long game. We can blame me because we'll all be dead. When it all comes back. The long game would be looking at the by. And they have they have pilotless flying cars Felix launching their. That's the long game. The long game is shoot you train. We should with the flying cars. Excel I was promised to find car. With the Jetsons is the old joke. Be we should be the ones nothing against Dubai or they got a bunch of billionaires over there. But they don't dilemma get to drive in Dubai. I better check my facts on do. I don't know. I mean, I think those technologies exciting.
