"Now we have a Virginia education official Just a few months ago November 2021 a few months ago Her name is said to be Maria Burgos Maria Burgos Then she essentially admits using a Marxist framework in the schools Now it's a little hard to hear will make it louder you're going to need to make it louder too But when we're done I will read through the transcript It's relatively short Go ahead I get that impression I've been doing this for 20 years I've been here It's inclusion for everyone Okay everyone You're implementing a monster Framework and you understand that how easy to educate and psychology sociology Not all of it So you're admitting that it is Part of it is what parts are used So this is a Virginia education official Very good I've implemented in the 20 years that I've been here is inclusion for everyone The woman says but you're implementing a Marxist framework Burgos well understand the Marxist framework and you don't understand and you'll understand how it's used in education psychology sociology today Not all of it Woman says so you're admitting it Your meaning it is used Then you hear the gentleman with a great voice say not all of it but that would imply that they're used So what parts are used Says look it up Read it yourself Sociology education and psychology

"Families and friends take place Doctor's appointments take place is where we get our news. I'm you would just go on and on like this is. The virtual world is no longer a vacation home. It is the primary residence for a lot of what we do. And yet We spend surprisingly little time and effort preparing our kids to thrive in this space. Where so much of their life is now going to take place so it's really interesting because i totally agree with that. It's interesting how that kind of lines up with. What would you would army life network for military spouses because we're all about empowerment instead of the deprivation and i feel like in the digital world for kids and even ourselves were all about the no. No no don't don't don't instead of the twos so shifting from that deprivation empowerment. What would you say we can do to take a more positive approach when shaping the next generation and even this current generation into being good digital citizens. Oh yes that is. That is such a great topic that we should spend so much more time thinking about because look the thing is when you and there's lots and lots of education research to show this when you focus on the things not to focus on the bad in trying to avoid the bad You actually are less effective at avoiding it than if you focus on the good things you want people to do and the example that i often give so so i have four kids They keep us very busy. But our kids all play the piano piano lessons and You can't learn to play the piano by being told what not what not to hit. You have to practice doing the right thing and the danger when we say of. Don't don't do this. Don't do that and don't do this. Is you Practice not doing something so we have to be able to flip and say what do we want. These skills of being a member of a digital world are complex and they take practice and we have to do it so to get to your question. What are some of the things that we need to be doing right. How can we help. Flip at approach. One of the things. I think is really important is to start to say How can we teach what it looks like to be. What are the what are the characteristics qualities of people in digital worlds. That means how do they stand up for somebody who is Being disrespected virtual space means how they recognize Useful information amidst all the noise it means. How do they make sure they are finding good. Balance between their different digital activities and All of the other physical and digital activities that they want to do and that not one activity is taking all of their their time. And finally i think it means also making sure that they are engaging in their local and family communities through technology in that the technology is helping. Draw them closer into their communities and not farther away from one thing that made me. I don't know if chuckle during your book. Other than you have a great sense of humor. And i did. I did l. times reading your book. Which i appreciate the the serious topic but you approach it so candidly and so intentionally. There was really empowering for me to read. I kind of laughed a few times a year sharing the content of your book as like. Yeah this is good for our children. But i can think about myself included a lot of people that was like grown-ups need to read this book and implement these things for themselves just because the last two plus years the online digital space has become bless of like a retreat in a vacation home and sometimes dare i say even prison like we get sucked in the drama or the hate or the things people say that they would never in a thousand years. Say face to face. And so i feel like those skills that you're mentioning Are super applicable not only to this next generation but the present digital generation. Oh it is so true. I mean my expertise is in working with families and kids around good use of technology. So that's where i where. I focused The book but absolutely if you look at the skills that that we talk about their how to be good that humans in burgos bases they totally apply to all of us You know slightly older members of the digital world. As well i love. I love your thoughts and your series on this but honestly like when it comes to technology use. A lot of older kids and teenagers are probably pretty set in their ways. So would you say that. It's possible to change their digital habits especially after this last year when most things were done virtually and maybe what advice would you give to uh parents or adults or educators to help them change these habits so the answer is absolutely yes you can always change a digital culture of family and and the saddest thing that i hear when i talk to parents is a feeling that it's too late right It's whatever. I wish. I'd done this earlier. I didn't i just i just started giving up. And and and yes. It's easier to some strategies that sharing this book. If you can start right off the bat ballooning at that is true but you can always always reevaluate and shift your your family's digital culture. The tip i would give is if you are doing that. If you've older kids maybe in high school is make sure you're involving them in the process and you can do that with younger kids too but it's particularly important when you have kids that are older that have already been using technology in certain ways. Don't come in and say okay. Here's what we're going to do today. Now here's the new rules of the road right. It's to come in and say as a family. What are some things that we care about when it comes to how we're gonna use technology. What type of digital citizens do we want to be. And then let's describe how we're gonna do that together now as parents. There's oh we can always say. I'd lots of times where kids don't really want to Help out around the house and say up. I realize you don't. But i need this help and we're going to do it right so it doesn't mean that we that parents don't have the ability to say no. This is something that we're going to do but do that. As a joint conversation. And i think you'll be surprised. How much involvement. How willing many kids are willing to have in coming up with the rules of the road. If they feel like they are involved in those conversations it takes away kind of fat that power struggle and instead of being parents versus kids. It's definitely more of a collaborative. What's the best battle rhythm for your screen. Time online experience your digital experience for our family and your.

"Certainly closer to the front. There's a lot of luck involved. Rutledge which narrowly missed the crashes. Well he was a fair way back. But you know i. It just reminded me of tau. Geoghegan heart said a week or so into the torture franz about any three leader strategy at the twitter impossible to protect three guys And yates came into this as as one of any these notional leaders and he's already lost. How many seconds steady you listed. Every twenty eight seconds thirty one seconds on the strategy and the strategy by all the games. Yesterday's well he wrote he wrote so al. Ese relative to the other g writers and on all those gains wiped. Today i mean was it a surprise that he was on his own when the crime then also afterwards. I mean you know there wasn't You had it been bernal. Say woods woods Would wanna the puccio or even a civic over somebody. I've gone back or narvaez or somebody t to to wait for him or to try and help him about because he seemed to be on his own afterwards. There was a lot of time and is pretty frantic at that moment in the race. Yeah and it's difficult to judge having not seen him throughout those lost four kilometers to to see whether there was indeed a teammate. How all all they can actually do doesn't look like it from the results. It doesn't there are no teammates around him in the results So i think he simply right. That's lost four point two kilometers on his try to limit losses as best. He could but coffee and yates weren't the only haters big. Hit us to lose time yesterday where we talked about that. Bahrain victorious leadership hierarchy. Didn't we and we haven't spoken to jack. Hey seem pretty clear to us. The lander as sole leader least at the moment. Hey himself lost a bit of time. He got caught behind the crash as well Almost forty seconds and more pattern a lot of people thought it was gonna be the breakout star or the giant killer of this What i find your he he underperforming. I would say yesterday in the time trial on february today. Game thirty eight second well. Daniel is slightly more relaxed. Feel to well tell the late starts the the sunshine the heat juices language rights on the place up one hundred heart rates. Yeah we're all very relax here. And the bunch. Sprints perhaps aren't as chaotic confronted can crash riddled as they are at the geo and the tour and i don't know it just it just doesn't feel like there's as much as taking the tour. The intensity is part of the reason for the crashes. The the fear writers are writing under here the different atmosphere. We tend to see as less daunting prospect. Certainly for inexperienced riders neo primaries. We tend to see near price level to which isn't necessarily the case that the are sunday not the case at the top of the franc's very often and there were a lot you pointed out. Didn't yesterday rich. The number of sub on the twenty two year olds here. It wasn't it was seven or eight seven twenty one year olds and to twenty year olds. Extraordinary really. I'm taking my lead from that richard. "Don't think so. I don't think it's opportunity for me. I'm there to help phoenix for the juicy and at it's my goal and my tossed with tomorrow. You're looking more the small climbs at the end of stages the two and three kilns declines at the end of stages is not the case i will see maybe throw ably or one of the days in the rockaway i will. I would just get into the race and make a plan later. Well that was mac shock. Mun Who came off prey badly in the crash. And i get. He was the biggest name. Actually we actually foul. I think but others were others. Lost time as well. You'd be studying. The piece came very broadly really the gym shock himself shock attack. He came down a little bit of grozny he was bleeding. The finish up was pretty pretty unfazed. Certainly as far as his own injuries were concerned. But the same could be said of. Patrick gamper his austrian teammate. And you'll be may use as well the belgian sprinter. I think we're supposed to sprint board today. But he also came down and they finish those guys but didn't look particularly happy when they did or particular goodwill way we'll we keep fingers crossed that they they're able to start tomorrow gum per looked at one point he was holding his shoulder and he feared they will broken color. Abundant you brother. Writers caught up in the cross. Ubs the was was just behind the crash when a happening tonight she goes down but he did have to pick his way through it. You carthy was even further back and that was just an attent- wasn't four and a half to go if you're here to try and finish on the podium you really have to be further up the bunch well particularly you know. We talked yesterday about hugh coffee. Having lost time quite significant time yesterday in the first days this being an issue that he's had i don't think he sees it as a problem with certain disbelieves he's had would have liked him to ride a bit close to the front of the on in the past. He's become kind of notorious. Either are a handful of riders. Even gce riders. Who have the style of me around the on. Not moving around the pets on staying the back. Most of the time. And yates i i mean he was. He was a middle toback of the peleton. He didn't have a teammate. Right next in right in front of him as i say. Some guys prefer that way of writing rod than fighting for positions as they go into the final three kilometers karpaz but now with certainly closer to the front. There's a lot of luck involved. Rutledge which narrowly missed the crashes. Well he was a fair way back. But you know i. It just reminded me of tau. "Do it skirted to be interesting to see how phillips and melania reconcile rose or cohabit in the future isn't it because well we were with A belgian colleague earlier today given lunberg and he he was talking to us about how philipson was a little bit put out when malaysia was inserted into the torture farms team. That wasn't originally the plan. He was gonna do the chair. I bet he's really climb the ladder of world sprint and this year. Hasn't he malaria. And it's it's pretty much top tier. He's he's among the five or six guys who who i think. Everyone considers the fastest in the world. So going forward. They're gonna have some tough decisions to make and the tour. It was some days for me. Some days for philips and a little bit like track of trucks during the past with max pederson and yes but even and others But yeah the will be some tough calls. Probably to make in the coming months and years did i mentioned that that vander pool special is for friends with the podcast. And if you want to sign up a friend podcast go to the site. Can podcast dot com. And you'll find that among lots of other episodes there it's It's a great story and the story was yacob's said i mean not not to as he told us Last night would have been a fairytale. Had he had he won. They still got lots more chances in walter. M is is great to see him. Certainly am sprinting at very high level again and he said last night he's not he's not scared of these bunch sprints he's overcome any fear he might have had he he doesn't want to crash clearly by 'em it's quite a feat also not just to get back to his old level physically bu to be able to contest because we have seen in the past bunch sprint says are you know they are doing what they do depends so much on on on bravery courage almost blocking out the fear that must be there and he's done incredibly well within a year to come back and just be able to contest these these finishes again i would suggest as well the welter is the best of the grand tour is the best place to do it to reacquaint himself without feeling because usually roads The roads into the town even straighter bit less road furniture than we see. The total franson the geo. The weather's tends to be more consistent and they're on as many big sprint. Trains is usually today's today's crush notwithstanding bit cleaner running and he has a speech today as as we heard his interview. He had the slightly longer lane to the finish. Having to go ryan mathews and philipson of the slightly shorter lineup up insight after the perfectly type. I'm theo trenton. Both of them. So you know the speed is there and he was coming. Pray fast at the end. So i'm sure he's got what it takes to win. A stage here still couldn't get the better of hormone volunteer flying. How do you think he's gonna stick. No how on pritchett last night we we gave us a big buildup didn't we we went to restaurants hopefully model and haman la hamadeh Which as we talked about probably ad nauseam yesterday is run was run. Set up by a gentleman who finished second or third. We weren't quite sure and some of them and you cook. I mean it was after. Say off the call call four days. I read a fantastic review from the observer by jane rayner of a fancy new place in london. I recommend anybody to go. Read this thing the dorchester hotel and he absolutely salon this place. I'm going to do quite the same. Bob was a huge disappointment. I would say because we were there at lunchtime. There are of staff all uniform. Well presented the uniform laws. Stop buzzing around the foot communication. Look good. I'd high hopes for last night i was served. Daniel was a bit of fatty stake in a role and very future should caveat this by telling listeners that your review tonight is a gentleman who when he first tasted gus baccio. Many days ago. "Crush notwithstanding a bit of a cleaner running and he has a speech today as as we heard his interview. He had the slightly longer lane to the finish. Having to go ryan mathews and philipson of the slightly shorter lineup up insight after the perfectly type. I'm theo trenton. Both of them. So you know the speed is there and he was coming fast at the end. Read this thing the dorchester hotel. He absolutely salon this place. I'm going to do quite the same. Bob was a huge disappointment. I would say because we were there at lunchtime. There are of staff all uniform. Well presented the uniform laws. Stop buzzing around the foot communication. Look good. I'd high hopes for last night i was served. Daniel was a bit of fatty stake in a role and very future. I should caveat this by telling listeners that your review tonight is a gentleman who when he first tasted gus baccio. Many days ago. In idaho kirkcaldy is. He's from kqed. Fm anyone complain that it was cold by to the kitchen bass that was in two thousand eight an an a cafe on the kings road in london and it was a buffet. And i i. I served myself some soup from the buffet. Went to my table on when embarking complained bill. Amount of that gastronomique shot to try this place. Last night was on your recommendation. Sierra responsibility i you know. I trust your judgment on these things and your judgment last night. Where richard final plus final of epicure in content this evening i promise this feature in a pinch pinch authors pinchas being this kind of top us that they have in northern spain on tactics pinchot does being punctures also injections alarmingly but it can also be a cova job. So there's going to be some kind of mention of something vaguely related to one of those teams everyday. Today was going to be pinchas. Because i read about. These pinschers booed goss's semi famous for and where we were this afternoon. The suburb of gamonal has got a lot of bars. Seventies v not yours and the pinchers whether picchu israeli a climbs. What else is the anchovies. All leaves with a cocktail stick stuck through them and marinated in vinegar addressing. And we were. We were closed. Some famous places to get these does the finished but it's sunday and everywhere photograph was gone and it was the place aamodt was closed. Which i'm very disappointed. Any one reason. I was keen to go to this place evening. Richard present company taken into consideration. I'm traveling with the scotsman. And i read a review of this ball which raves about. How cheap it was. "Yeah so i. I had to bring back to the wheel of. I think it wasn't milano immense us. But i didn't see the images And then i had to launch again for the final spring. Then yeah metrics at the boss think milano so i had to go right right and it was just maybe a split second where i loose speed but Like i said phillips on the left he was fast than Yeah i guess. He's a well-deserved winner. Today like they say pressure makes diamonds and today was barely over almost a diamond. So we're going to try and keep going for sure. There is a win so well daniel. We open their with fabric jacobson. We heard from last night's episode. Of course they bunch sprint makes diamonds. What a quote does it though. Pressure and heat and today there was pressure and the becoming the los our It's patient of huggies. Diamond than what's what's your name comes from the name for diamond specialist. It's a spec. I'll i will look at the olive wikipedia site. Whatever the name is. I'm not quite there yet Well it was. It was an eye catching or you're catching quote. Wasn't it from the atkinson. And i guess it was. A one of the stories of this world would be can jakobsen return to the top and win stages here. He's one sages wealth of before. He is still recovering of course from his horrific crash tour of poland boss year and he went very close today. Didn't he it was. I mean we were watching. The finish with dot and belgian colleagues weren't on one was shoving. Yaacob said niller one which i think philipson on it was a very close when was side of the u. e. lee. I am and it was hard to hard to tell. As across the line who'd one would have been a great story how jakobsen one of course About it's less than a year since his crushing poland isn't it was just over a year just over year Would have been a fantastic story. But it's a good story anyway because yeah yes. Philipson came very close. Couple of times in the tour de france and today completed his teams. Clean sweep of the first bunch sprints in every gruntal this year and was story is a move. We'll talk about later on because they're a team who start the year. People who've said was one dramatic vander pool and but they have more than proven their worth and proven that they deserve to at the and the vuelta as well people questioned that too that you know that they perhaps for taking the place of local teams of of teams belonging to those countries. But they've they've more than deserved the cost to celebrate full philipson today because he's also quiet. Nickname hormone volunteer. The flying ham. Of course he's sangu not short volante simon. In the entire couple of years ago the flying black pudding are in burgos which is famous for. Its more theon with the blood sausage black pudding of this area which we've talked about quite a lot the last couple of days and today we were reminded that philipson is from a place in. Belgium could ham h. a. m. how mon in spanish and brought rather out. Because he does he does very well. So when i'm lost adam years to be the flying more thea no he could be wasn't flying today. We love with not be correct yeah. I'm more theo volunteer. He wasn't flying today. no one. We'll talk about that later. On and we arguments crossover to lionel bernie and not want moment to get the the story of what happens in they do not buddha as well not bernie and not not burgas. Wins us coming up. Daniel had a policy of only twenty one year old. So we'll hear from them. I view michel corelli's the sports rights. How phoenix we're going to hear from. Mike chapman who came off in that crash as well which has become a kind of tradition of the fuss oatmeal stages of granddaughters. Big crash this woman about four and a half kilometers to go and it said costs some writers sometime further. Ado should we cross over. Burning is lonzo. Benny are duke of wellington. Gigolo wedding team was so driven out of l. same eighteen twelve by the french. i think over to lie. No that was stage. Two which started south of the city of bogas and looped one hundred sixty six point seven kilometers through the sunbaked countryside finishing back in the city with the anticipated bunch sprint given the cost profile and particularly with an uphill. finish tomorrow. Perhaps it was not surprise that it was a carefully controlled day although it could been very different if the wind had blown as wars conditioned with fairly calm and so we had to sort of paint-by-numbers early grand tour sprint stage. I must admit. I did have something of a late afternoon. Siesta the events of about one hundred kilometers to go to seventy five kilometers to go a bit of a mystery to me. But i got an not an awful lot happened when i woke up the same three reuters. We're away. Three riders from spanish wildcard teams. Who got away very early on. They were diego rubio riding very much. The home team bogo speech and to well to wtn associated roma martine corral and zombie mikhail aspirin of euskaltel and. They lied to almost four minutes very early on and then was gradually back in and held a minute and a half or two minutes. And then when i wake up from my siesta it was down to about a minute and at that point the pelivan actually eased up. Allowed the gap to open up again because no one wanted to catch the break too soon. It stayed more or less like that until thirty one and a half kilometers to go when rubio pushed on without the other two and then he was cool with twenty kilometers to go by the peleton. Which at that point was being led by astana. Now they were trying to lead out. Alex ambu for the intermediate sprint. And i'm had that fantastic time-trial yesterday wearing the green jersey on loan from primoz rocketship course and he wanted to take some points in the intermediate sprint to give himself a chance of wearing the jersey by tomorrow and he did not finishing second to fabio jakobsen then it was all down to the finish and the inevitable crashes so often happens it was a strange one. This with around four point two columbus toco. It seemed to be on a fatty straightforward stretcher slightly uphill road but it was a touch of wheels in the middle. Quite near the front of the bunch. Quite a few. Riders went down a couple of four hundred square rogers on the floor for a while german. Champion max chapman was certainly it up and crucially outshine to three kilometer tomorrow. Which meant that..

"Concerned indeed I'm here for a few days aren't we. We're kind of in the same hotel for four nights before we move on on tuesday so we'll get to know quite well over the next days and daniel kind of go without hearing from joel dombrowski. I mean Joe dombrowski view is is is expected by people in the podcast. He's writing here. He knows the chiro at one stage generally crashed after few days. Same crashes me of course was done. I me- ended his hero as well. so spoke to joe the finish. I was king to find his contract situation because the contract to end the year. It doesn't currently have anything agreed yet for next year quite hard. Faa how are you. Yeah okay. I mean okay right now. I'm not okay. But i'm okay generally. Yeah i mean yeah tough tough tougher isn't it is said a few guys coming through here paying for it. You got to got to really dig deep in the short distance. Yeah it's like you know also before these grand tours most guys really taper quite a bit so you're super fashion when you really and you do a part after stinks. Have hit and also. It's so hot. it's obviously august now so most guys are pretty well adapted. But we're having a bit of a heat wave too so it's even warmer than enormous so we We lost so you. The jiro show. We lost sodium even racing physicians. I the form. How are you feeling going into this. Rates compared to how you are jiro. Yeah i think To be honest going into the jere. I felt like i was really going good. It was kind of a slow build all spring and then Just in training. In the couple of weeks before i seen good numbers and obviously started really well and i wasn't there more than five days but i wouldn't say i feel quite as confident going into the vuelta I didn't actually know. I was doing the vuelta until a couple of weeks ago. But we'll see. I mean you can really surprise yourself sometimes anyway. So he's not a racist. Be you know the the claims. The wealth survey different. The yeah you know. i'm not an explosive rider. And i'm i'm suited to more of the high alpine climbing stages whereas here you know we have a couple of stages with some climbing. But for the most part it's traditional vuelta like big fast roads in an explosive. Finish so for me. It's quite tough actually. Because if you want to do something from the group it's gonna be really explosive because you might only have three k. finishing climate fifteen percent. And then if you want be in the breakaway. It's not simple because you know here. In spain we tend to race on big roads. Speeds are very high in the jerome tour. You see more small technical roads. And if you're smart about your efforts you can find the breakaway more easily whereas if rana highway at sixty cases per hour it's a bit of a lottery you know and a good example many times in the ryder. Remmy cavani in the break. Because he's able to go so many times on the flat for someone like me. It's a bit more difficult job but never mind. Yeah no i know what you mean. I mean the team What was her team. Do you have here ambitious team. Because obviously you come off. The team does that. Take some pressure off everybody else on the team. I would say to some extent but you know it's like okay for the guys that did the tour. Yes but we also have guys. That didn't do the tour. Jiro and then if you don't have much to show for yourself so far this season it's kind of like the welton can be the last chance saloon. You know it's like maybe for whatever reason be it. Crashes or poor form or sickness. You didn't get what you wanted out of the first part of the season and now you have one more three week race to kind of show something and what about you and your contract situation. We were a bit. But jiro any movement since then what. You'll be doing that actually. I'm not sure yet. I haven't signed quite yet and it's still a little bit up in the arts. I think moving in the right direction. But it's been a little bit slower than i expected but i hope in the next couple of weeks that it's all sorted and then reveal give us an exclusive on the podcast. Perhaps we'll i was joe dombrowski and hopefully his vuelta lasts longer than his jira. Another writer really suffering after the time trial with the The effort of dot short. I'm not sure quite difficult course. I must say down you over. Another grind through tradition is stacey snyder's mucks cups and competent cappuccino set on july bowls and once again. They all sold very quickly today. Thanks everyone who bought one. All proceeds to phoenix bikes Charity close to stacy's and closer to home as well so she knows it. Well and We're delighted to be able to help. Phoenix next bikes and thanks to everyone. Who bought one hockey aficionado. Richard more will probably be more more fiamma blood saw will probably you will but we're also visiting place again. I mentioned last week on the podcast. That in two thousand fifteen very famously..

"Was coach. Who integration and were not coming to a netflix series near you because we know that's not going to be a third series last of npr mental spins this year. No it's going to be really interesting to observe him over the next few days on to observe tomorrow stage in general. Because as i said earlier there is talk across but movie star had this. I mentioned the netflix series and there was a lot of heat after you spoke by the during the tour de franz jose. Luis addy atholl. Who was the number one. The has been for a number of years. Particularly the vuelta. He's not here this as being replaced by paci villa who came on board lost year and was given a watching brief as we see in the second series of the bottle and he is supplanted idea of the world to this year will francois sportsburry. I thought the turn. The movie star series netflix series had really Not gone down well with our time self and you know. He came out of it badly and his reputation was certainly harmed by. I think the team's reputation was probably harmed harm bein away. Even though by opening themselves up in the way they did that she endeared themselves to find this. But i think the way that that certain people came across didn't probably do them any any favors being one of them talking dr explicit strategizing. I'm gonna drool this our next three three or four days. Because we're buddha goes for three four days in and around bogus which is about el-sayed l. save elsayed elsayed was famous military.

"He can earn for himself. I mean not thirty nine seconds. Linda lost today roach gain over the next few days or the next week and botas seconds. Well lost jae took the red jersey. Straightway at the end of the first stage lost her kara pas of the six stages in any way back and forth a little bit and as you know he was it seemed to be fading towards the end the previous year so the first of his wealth victories. He took the the red judge after ten. Stay just i think. I think you have to. You have to really talk about third week and really have faith in the fact that he is going gonna fight because he's done. He's done every time in every one of these tools he's contested that he's one or nearly one including the jira The sort of franz famously. In twenty twenty. I think that's what you do. And you know you look at the last week with the two big mountain stages in covadonga also on the penultimate day of the racist stage in galicia which is up and down days. It's like a mini maxi. Liaise passed on the as in terms of the climbs Two hundred kilometers on a day when general classification could change quite law. I you have to be patient. Yeah that's a very hard season. isn't it Donyell You another team. That always comes well with great ambition and pressure an expectation even today in burgos every time there was a movie star. Right are the course. The cheers were lighter. Is spanish national team isn't it. And but there's one non-spaniard has more than one non by the team is one notable non-spaniard on the team. Who you've tipped for tomorrow stage. Well no tipped him. I think you ha- eighteen mentioned him. I mentioned last week and the puck off last week. I said he was a curious selection. "Lead up at plans and see in fact. I said jack cake mountain precisely that when he finished. Should we hit from jack. Fifteen seconds from adam boudou as punchy sprint is about what kinda cool. Yeah definitely i think in the on maybe like maybe michael matthews these kind of like punch. You guys could really do. Well i think it was. Maybe a horn of africa. Quite steve out of the kind of effort. And he's guys do really well. Go off you guys. Penultimate right at trenton losses london earlier. What should we read into. Even i think Landed wounded dinner. Eli's quite on spanish for spanish person but no. I wouldn't read too much into it early and i traffic has the best chance of oeste win the stage and it's definitely cooling off now so that'll help a lot and between all you guys caruso you padron was to sort of stay guys you second relievers or norris come here. Obviously lane is going perfectly. Well we sold out in a bogus. Maybe level was super high. But he's a great writer so armee to give him a opportunities as possible. He's proven he can do it before and grind to us are becoming here and try to do the best for him. And if anything falters we've got so many guys here is back opposite. We don't need to select a second. Jc roger i think finally jack harry mummers tomorrow could be a bit of a up with a win What what have you heard about why this is day. Three and boggles me day. One was windy super windy. Day to roy loss forty k. Nordic breath win. The super fast would be nice dress sprint. Finish sorry maybe a fifty fifty percent chance as some wind. it'll be much hotter than the standards. I h. we won't win you. Do i personally would love to see a bunch. Sprint noise stress coming to stage three. See what happens. But i'm sorry for the fans win. It'd be the best. The effervescent jack haig. They're always very upbeat. Isn't a curious to see what he does this. What am i. What about feary about. Because linda started Whether that was linked to the time he wanted to have dinner. I mean i think starting early was very wise. Move if you could because as we saw with a few of the writers originally this it might look like nothing on on paper. Two time trump. They were going deep. And then this hot dry air they were really hurting their lungs and some of them will be coughing for a good couple of hours. I would suggest after this will take them a while to wayne. Nine o'clock now writer like rug lynch might be whining about ragas maybe a bad example because he phase everything in his stride 'em but yeah i mean the the you know having the thanks to recovery timing lonzo base at an extra two hours recovery muslims. Today an which can only help. I would have thought but yeah i mean yeah. Very late. rarely ever struck by rog lynch again. How relaxed he seemed he wanted into the little warm highest before the start. Unsuspected the unthreatening his Fellow slovenian he. He looked incredibly relaxed. Smiling aims chuck thing You know he's going for his third protected win here. The walter isn't paid very well pressure on him. In a way we're used to that was with raw goat's staffer. The favourite here sat. Goose could be a very useful lieutenant from any clearly in great form. What are you thinking about landa. Fourteen thousand nine seconds paul under-par overcome probably par. But it could be worse. I mean it's quite a long time. Isn't it really when you look at how grand tears that decided often these days. The recent franz apar- 'em it's seconds isn't that so that could be significant. Who knows We were talking on a completely different daniel earlier on by the fresh writer and race. Twenty one years old. You asked whether he was the youngest race truck by this. We know that the vuelta is a race. Where young talents are blooded but with the number of exceptionally alright. Is there to twenty year olds and racing. Carlos canal put simmons. There are one to several Seven twenty one year olds you know. There are fifteen youngest right on the races. Twenty two year old. Simon car is quite extraordinary and is continuing trend. That we're seeing trends. We saw today was writers writing on the road. Bikes rather than time is quite a few to presumably. Try and go up. The claim fastest. It didn't seem to work for them. All.

"Either play by the bells from burgos cathedral there daniel. I'm in the closing stages. All the time trout tonight. Mass has just finished premature. Glitch is is he rogue defying everybody not to extend the we pops expected any fat rich. I'm quite surprised interview but agreed with this. How small the time got sabine. I guess it's this tells us what happens when you have such technical course with a decent climb in the first half burned all those is losing a little bit of time quite a long time of the writers. It's an old question isn't much catch. The form is this. We swamped by this. The jiro as well even a short effort like this. Do you can hear their swimming. Burn alchemy across the line there. But how much how. Much of an indication a guide is to form thing. I i think it's a i think it is you've seen i mean they're small smoothens but you have seen. The summarizes are an excellent foam for example raymond day. Who's who in the past is now has not been renowned as the greatest time and he lost drop until a few minutes ago. Well i think still eleven seconds down on at bhutto Your comes role glitched on you. Well what do we expect here. We expect him to where we expected him to smash everyone tonight. And if he does take the red jersey. It's going to be my belly narrow margin spectral a couple of riders and they said this was the spring t- punchy writers like attleboro and brokerage six seconds of a very narrow win for him and by his standards. Yeah a lot of guys really lump together at the top there you not much to separate them but burnell has lost time there and and you know i i just wonder you can sort of see right is piggy hanging or no time borough. It's being in the hot seat for a long time. Not very comfortable looking halsey waving and smiling. He knew it was coming. Didn't they are. I'm sure he's suspected it was coming from raw raw goat's go bike and his golden helmet. I i think as olympic time trial champion. And he's done it he. The defending champion is in the right jersey. Grisly to go the results rich at buda. Six seconds down. Young trump nick Eight seconds down scully. Tan and matthews. I had him down as my second pay. He was fourteen seconds sound and but he's a bit of a motley assortment of riders in that top ten. I didn't think blast would particularly well. Today he is will ten fourteen seconds down one of the better g c riders in off road. Mitch you'd have to save blossoms. Had the best day remember. I son had another. But did you have lost soft job. It was going to join a repeat listeners. While using the star hosting the stunning counting. Honestly go to three. I went three. Two one floss off. Daniel laughed at that time just turned off in droves. He did a very good ride. And the ac very good ride. He was brought the early pacesetter. Even as i said earlier mekelle landa didn't share the amount of expected so it's pretty much I wouldn't say it's algae were but we. I don't think we've learned apart from the face. Light subtle hints about form in terms of time gaps. No one is really on the back for today. I wouldn't say even the seppuku was amazing performance from him. He's obviously going well Jack cake you know big questions about. His fitness here is really in a bad way off the turtle franz and this is his first race since then he crushed. I've of course and bought again either. Signs are are pretty good for him. Superman and how to remember his trial at the start in the general here blown off the course. Let's lay on either the race by twenty first today. That's that's decent for him isn't it. It is he suddenly old coutanche all before. But i've been few between masters. It's an old question isn't much cash. The form is we swamped by this. The jiro as well even a short effort like this. Do you can hear their swimming. Berdahl coming across the line there but how much how much of an indication a guide is to form i. I think it's a i think it is. You've seen i mean small smoothens but you have seen. Science Movie Club: 'Twister'

"Alley. Burgos still remembers the first time she saw it. I mean we all do as about in fourth grade. It was maybe around midnight. Probably not that late because my parents probably wouldn't let me step that lay but Curtains drawn. I was knitting and I happened to come across admitted I happened to come across this movie on. Tv is just flipping channels. You know and I saw a tornado so I started watching it and I was just mesmerized. I remember my dad coming down and like yelling at me to go to bed. I was like just just wait. One more minute like I need to keep watching this Which she did and she saw the defining weather film of Nineteen Ninety. Six a movie. I love to hate twister starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt in the movie chase down tornadoes trying to find a way to study them up close and personal and eventually they end up finding each other like it is such a good kind of bad movie. Yeah absolutely it's one of those things that you just watch like. Oh it's so good but so bad at the same time. So today. Our first shortwave. Movie Club we're talking one of my personal favorites twister with Alli Burgos meteorologist in analyst for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. I- Madison via shortwave. The daily science podcast from NPR. Alright here's the plan. I'm GonNa talk about some scenes in the movie alleys going to tell us about the science. Here we go in pretty much any scene with a tornado. It makes the sound. It's so ridiculous because tornadoes don't sound like roaring lion. I'm pretty darn sure. I think when I was reading a little bit about the movie they really want to make the Tornados. Seem like you know. A person are like this thing with like character and soul and generally tornadoes actually sound more like this constant low rumble sound or more like a rushing train. All right all right next up something. They got Kinda right the whole movie. Scientists are trying to get this instrument called Dorothy into the path of a tornado. We put her up inside a tornado. So they don't get sucked up in send out readings from the inside radio back information about the internal structure wind velocities flow a symmetry. We learn more than thirty six and they have in the past thirty years profile. The tornado for the first time the cool thing is is that these instruments are real. Scientists actually tried a version of this in the eighties sprite. Yeah so they modeled Dorothy after a real instrument called toto from wizard of Oz. The little dog toto. That's why they named it. And so the basic idea was to put that in the path of a tornado and had I could measure temperature and pressure and winds because what they really needed was to be able to get measurements real time so they only had things from radar doppler. So that's all from faraway measuring all those things and they tried it a couple of times in. It's really dangerous. As as the movie shows of trying to put something into our tornadoes half but now they actually have a new program that Noah is starting to fund called Torres and this is taking really small weather balloons and putting instruments on that and flying them up in Tornado. Okay so the balloon kind of takes that instrument package with it versus having to put a big clunky metal thing right in the power. So we've come a long way from like dropping something off a pickup truck into the center of the Tornado so cool so so the instrumentation while it wasn't like trying to measure exactly the same things was actually based off of a real experiment yet. They exact concept behind it was was the same so the last big scene of the movie is perhaps in. This is saying the. Let's be honest. It's the best season so the main characters are trying to get as close to an f five tornado. Great idea as they possibly can. And they deliver this device into the tornado and they kind of like get stuck on this farm. They're trying to run away from the Tornado at the same time report. You couldn't do in real life. Okay okay this is good because this is going to ask you about. But they basically find their way into this tiny shed Phil. Paxton is like it's fine. We're going to tether ourselves to this pipe. That goes really deep in the ground. Do with these two leather straps and then f five tornado rolls over the shed. Horrifically over the rips. The shed out of the ground. They're like being pulled up into the center of the tornadoes. One it is the most fun scene of the movie. You feel like you're inside of that Tornado with them. You see lightning bolts going on. There are multiple mini tornadoes within the big tornado. Within the tornado passes and they're totally fine her fine. Yes the biggest issue with that scene. Is that if you did have supposedly an F five tornado which you wouldn't be able to tell just looking at it is that all of the debris flying on around them would most likely kill them an f five tornado has wins upwards of three hundred miles an hour so even if you have a small small screwdriver for example of rats flying at that speed hits you you're gone and if you saw in that scene there is a shed and it's like full of like farming equipment ause and they would probably get hit by something like that but it certainly makes it a fun scene so tell me when you're saying you can't tell just by looking at because they're like this is an f. five right yeah so you can actually determine the scale or the intensity of a tornado just by looking at it what scientists have to do is do a damage survey afterwards and see all of the damage that the tornado caused and then from that they can determine the intensity walked has now moved on to the northeast. I've just got Mordovia. That even stronger Hornet is now starting to form twenty five miles from one you know so at at no point. Can you predict that a tornado is going to be at five before it happened? Correct to do the damage report. And you say okay based on this system this right and they were just going by you. Know bigger means stronger more violent. And that's not always the case you can actually have tornadoes that are look pretty small but that are very very violent. Okay all right so we have hated on twister a little bit by now but I feel like a lot of times in science movies. Scientists seem like pretty buttoned up lay definitely predominantly male. Which they still are in this movie. But you know. The lead researcher in this movie is woman. She's got a personal stake in her science. She's really passionate about helping people in that kind of stuck with me for sure. Yeah I think that stuck with a lot of people and I think a lot of people don't realize that there are tons and tons of researchers out in the field and so it's really cool just seeing people like down getting their hands dirty and really putting their heart and soul especially into something that is so important to help people and you told me that. This movie played a big role in your life to. Oh definitely I was one of those weird kids that watch the weather channel. Every morning waking up from school normal kid and so- twister definitely kind of showed me that there's another side of science besides just being a TV broadcasting like you can go out and research these things and going to college to study meteorology. My parents actually bought me that movie as a parting gift on DVD. It's fair to say that this movie inspired you in some way to go into your. Oh definitely and I think it inspired a lot of people to I know all of my meteorology friends speak very fondly of this movie when they were kids.

But we'll drivers cash in on the stock to from American public media. This is marketplace tech demystifying the digital economy. I'm Molly would. Uber is going public tomorrow listing its shares on the new York Stock Exchange some employees of the company stand to make millions even billions of dollars and Uber is giving drivers with more than twenty five hundred rides on the platform. Cash bonuses that they can use to buy stock at the initial public offering price the amounts ranged from one hundred bucks two maybe up to forty thousand dollars depending on how many rides at driver has. But how much of a benefit is that two drivers who are already unhappy with their pay Shaly Ramirez, drives for Uber. She's eligible for the stock. But says I don't think it's enough. I think they're China throw crumbs at us at the end of the day. What we need is something that is guaranteed on a weekly basis on a daily basis on a yearly basis. On Wednesday in New York City Ramirez and other drivers protested outside Uber's headquarters calling for higher wages from Uber, and lift and better treatment, they were similar protests all over the country Ramirez drivers simply need to make more money. That stock is not going to stop us from becoming homeless that stock is not going to have that help pay our rent and care for our children. So they need to come up with something a little bit better than that. One academic says the ideal scenario would be for companies to give drivers equity before the company goes public as if they were engineers or product managers designers. A Cinderella Zhang is an NYU professor who wrote a book on gig employment and how it's changing the economy. He says securities law hasn't really caught up with the gig economy. The challenge for the privately held company is that it's extremely complicated to have hundreds of even thousands of people who don't have sort of a strong relationship or an employment relationship or onto credited investors to own sort of small numbers of shares in a private company, but he says he thinks the law will involve to allow private companies to give equity to their part time workers that would be a nice outcome. It would be sort of reflective of the fact that the made important. Tribulations to lake you know, the evolution and success of the company. Now, of course, having stock in a company doesn't mean you'll actually make money when it goes public lift also led drivers by shares when it went public, but its stock price has fallen since its public debut. Some drivers like J crater who also writes about the rideshare industry are pragmatic. You know, I think if you have the right mindset, it's it's not a problem. I mean, this is the relationship we have I am an expense. And they're gonna try and do everything they can to pay me as little as possible when Burgos public this week. It says it will reserve five point four million shares about three percent of its offering for drivers to buy with their cash. Bonuses, anything they don't buy. We'll be returned to the public market. Related links lift reported its first earnings as a public company on Tuesday. And although it gave a generally encouraging report it also held back some information that it used to give investors like the number of total rides and bookings. It had in the previous quarter, which is obviously fairly useful indicator of whether the service is growing, and I mean lift also lost over a billion dollars last quarter, which is more than it lost an all twenty eighteen, but okay, investors were mostly worried about the lack of data lift shares closed at an all time low on Wednesday, but lift did in partnership with Waymo the self driving car company owned by alphabet, which investors do like because they don't wanna see the company get put out of business by someone else's army of self driving cars, although obviously long-term that's not great news for drivers either. Because if the cars drive themselves who needs a human. I'm Ali would. And that's marketplace. Tech. This is a PM. Hi, I'm Zach and I listened to marketplace in Arlington Virginia.
