Bumble Goes Public & Bans Body-Shamers

"Past year between the presidential election social unrest caused by racism and discrimination. A lot of companies have had the chance to come forward and make their missions and values known. But there's one company that's been forthright about their stand on social issues from the beginning and it may surprise you but that's the dating app. Bumble unlike other dating apps bumble allows only female identifying users and heterosexual matches to make the first move or send the first message as it were the app which launched in two thousand fourteen seeks to empower women. Looking for love and make up of the company itself is full of women in power its founders female and seventy percent of its board members are women that's basically unheard of in the corporate world. Bumble hasn't been shy about taking a stand before in two thousand eighteen in the wake of the deadly school shooting in parkland florida the band users from sharing images of guns or other weapons at the time. Ceo and founder. Whitney wolf told time magazine quote we will always put our values above our bottom line unquote well. The company recently had a chance to once again. Put that promise into practice. In late january bumble told it's now forty two million monthly users that it was explicitly banning any form of body shaming on the app in a statement they defined body shaming as quote forcing. Your opinion of a good body onto others unquote. They said they would prohibit users from sending messages critiquing. Someone's body or sharing that a certain body type was unacceptable or undesirable in their user bios and they explicitly said language that could be deemed fat. Phobic ablest racist colorist. Homophobic transphobic had no place in their app and algorithm will flag such language bumble will give rule breakers a warning and repeat incidents can cause a user to be banned from the app entirely anyone who feels like they're the victim body shaming meanwhile. Ken report a user through the app. The move came just a few weeks before bumble went public which made ceo and founder heard the youngest female founder to take a us company public and the youngest self made female billionaire bumble sold fifty million shares in its initial offering reports. Cnbc heard is no stranger to dating apps she cofounded competitor tender and twenty twelve. She left tender two years later and soon after filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the company the parties eventually reached a settlement tender has community guidelines that discourage users from harassing and mistreating other users and relies on its estimated fifty million users to report violations of these rules last year the company began using a new machine learning to the help flag offensive messages according to wired but it's diverged from bumble and other ways following fumbles move to ban images of guns attender spokesperson told mashal that quote. We're not banning guns. We don't have a blanket ban of guns unquote tenders owned by match group which also owns dating apps hinge match and okay Prior to going public bumble said it acknowledges its competition but that online dating is not a quote winner takes all market reported. Cnbc that's because the company said most people have an average of two different dating apps on their phones and with this move bumble is hoping that if you were tired of body shaming and other offensive comments that can play the online dating world. "The dating app. Fumbles wiped right on. Its ipo last week. Making it ceo whitney wolfe heard the youngest female ceo take a public. Not only that. But eight of the company's eleven board members also identify as women and that has more than just symbolic power bumble has styled itself as a women first dating app. The platform encourages them to send the first message. It also moderates the photos that are on profiles and the ones sent through direct messages so users won't get any revealing content. They didn't ask for sarah. Kunst is the managing director of cleo capital and she advised about on its venture capital arm. I asked her if all that translates into more women on the app then men. No you know it's funny. They're more men. Because it turns out that when you empower women and when you give people dignity and equity in the relationships that it helps everybody. It's not just women. And how much of that do you think is because of the type of content moderation. It does not allowing photos of shirtless men are worse. I think that's a huge part of it right when you think. Oh maybe maybe. I'll go meet the love of my life today on a dating app and instead you see something that you really did not want to see. It's disappointing and and it makes you less excited to do it and so bumble hs done a ton of work in making sure that you know people are who they say. They are with things like photo verification to that. They're not doing creepy mean rude things and if they do than than the the companies taking a really firm stance that it's really kind of one strike and you're out with everything from people who want to body shame to people who are sending lewd images that's not okay and certainly the legislation that they've been able to work on and push through in the state of texas to make sending a picture that exposes yourself illegal. It makes so much sense. Those are the kinds of things that are so obvious. In retrospect but but nobody in the dating app world and the online dating world had taken that stand yet. And i think it's pretty clear from the market debut. There's a lot of success in helping people. Just treat each other better given that success. Do you think you'll see more companies kind of taking that same path of moderation. I mean i think this is happening right. I really kinda everywhere right now in our world online when you look at everything from twitter's tussles with the last president to the facebook review board. They're starting to be this understanding that you can't be the wild west right you build roads in the real world but then you put up speed limit. I think we're seeing that happen. A lot. Right now in the digital world and i think companies like bumble. That had the vision that had the real kind of character to stand up and say. This isn't okay. we're not doing it. I think that really really matters. And so that. I think is something that we're going to see more of less of and it certainly hasn't escaped my notice that it seems like women led companies in particular are really leaning that way. Now this good news for bumble comes on the heels of what looks like bad news. For other women lead tech companies with so many facets of life the pandemic seems to have exacerbated inequities including with venture funding the share venture capital dollars for companies founded by women declined last year to point three percent according to crunch base. So what happened. And what do you think needs to happen at change. That i mean the good news is it is a frustrating problem with very simple solution. The solution is now fund more women and fund more more women. Because you either fundamentally believe that somehow men are just so much naturally better at running companies and raising money that they take ninety percent plus of all venture funding. Or you think that there is some inequity and there's a problem to be solved there and you know the reason to solve. It isn't the the social mission. It's because if you are leaving that much money on the table by not funding women. Then you're not gonna make as much money as you should and you know it is your job as a investor as a venture capital investor to make money and so by only looking at a sliver of the population. You know that's a lot of money you're not making and that's not good. So that's the solution. Why is it a problem. I mean the reason for this problem is always the same. The reasons never change. it's always. it's always sexism. It's always biased. It's always you know the concept of hama awfully of sane. Every human is generally drawn to people who remind them of themselves. And when you don't have enough diversity on the investing side of the table. You're very unlikely to see that diversity take place on the founder side you know. Bumble obviously had a really successful. Ipo do you think that will make a difference. You know in all of the stuff that you're talking about you know the success of stumbles ipo. And and being the youngest woman take a company. Public reminds me of this excessive katrina lake in such fix a few years back. And it's it is certainly helping to move that needle right if if you can't be what you can't see shortly after fumbles. Ipo came to marquette allison from from the ceo of our modern help. You know a company. That recently became a a unicorn. You have said openly that that she looks at that is is a real inspiration to think about you. Know how do we. How do we get an even younger woman to show her company next now. They're looking at that. I think that that deeply matter is built on the founder side and on the investor side. Because when you start to see that it becomes a lot easier of the next time a woman walks in your office building a company that you might not one hundred percent understand because it's not fixing a personal pain point for you and say well i mean if there's been all this success in the market and this person seems interesting incredible. Why wouldn't they be next. And so i think it's incredibly incredibly important.

Love in the Time of COVID: Why Dating Apps are Thriving

"In the time of Cove it it's out there as covert infections rose worldwide. So did the use of dating APS Match Group, which owns a majority of the dating APP market. It's on nearly 50% more installs last year compared to 2019. So today with Valentine's Day, just around the corner, you're going to meet some folks making the pandemic work for their love lives. Coronavirus be damned. Here's Kcrw's Daniel. She require The last thing on Brits mind before the pandemic was settling down. An attorney by day break moonlighted as the life of the party going out to bars, thinking out with girlfriends and meeting you guys. So when the covert lockdown started, it really only took three weeks to get back onto the dating scene. Once I realized that this was like a permanent state of being it was like, OK, my life may stop, but my libido can not like I need to continue trying to find a partner. Absolute hinge and bumble became a social life preserver for the 36 year old divorce, eh? And then forced Britt to get creative When finding Cove. It's safe date spots. After a few facetime dates, she made guys at the beach and at the park drive in movie theaters, even her own apartment. Although that one did lead to a few awkward encounters. It's like you getting back to your house and they get their dicks out there. Go. It must be dick out time. No, it's not Dick out time. We're just in my house. First swiping on hot singles was fun until the duration of the pandemic began to really sink in for Brit. Things have gotten so serious. It's like there's this this cloud of uncertainty all the time and going out and having fun and getting to know people just to get to know him. We're just dating somebody because you think you're their interesting You don't have that leeway anymore. It's just it's not available. Normally you're waiting to date the like boring, perfect guy when you're ready to get married because you still want to go out and have fun and, like hashtag whole life. And there is no hashtag her life right now, like you at the beginning of the pandemic, Britt met a fellow attorney who she thought if there's a little boring, maybe a bit too stable. But these days, he's starting to look more attractive by the minute. Hope it has really brought a lot of things home for me. You have. You know, I've had a lot of time to like, Sit at home and think And you know how many like premieres the guy would go to and what kind of places he could get me into. Like what kind of clubs he had. That he went to that kind of stuff used to matter like, how fun is it going to be to hang out with this guy That's on is important now because there's nowhere to go, so it's really just more about stability now looking for somebody that Like, Basically, if you're stable enough to make it through a pandemic, you're stable enough to father my baby that Z. If you still have a job at the end of this pandemic ur daddy cereal here. I mean, well, the pandemic has led to life changing family planning revelations for Britt. For others. The turmoil has also provided time for introspection, Visa VI online dating and Pandemic situation ships Like for 27 year old Drew Gregory. Drew had a big break up back in 2019. Then she started casually dating two years after coming out as Trans. She was just trying to figure it all out, including herself. On 80 s and not clear for us. And for the first time in like dating as a woman for the first time, the pandemic, forced her social and dating life online and then lead to new revelations on how she connects with others. You know if there's a person who in a non pandemic situation, we would have gone on like three dates and had sex once or twice like, and instead we went on three dates and did not. Does that make it so now like when I think about How well I got to know that person. Is it less? Is it because of that? I don't know, because maybe having a four hour zoom call. We're literally all you're doing is staring at each other's faces, like intimate in a different way. Like brim, the allure of stability sank in, Drew realized she might even be ready for another serious relationship that like feels like a vulnerable thing for me to say, and to admit that like I do, I do want that. It feels like it's much cooler toe like not want that, and then you stumble upon it. But the fact is, Is that like I do want that? And well, folks

Project Car of the Week: 1969 Dodge Dart

"This week's projet carve. The week was the nineteen sixty nine. Dodge dart posted on the moped hunter. Facebook page on tuesday january fifth at nine a. m. let's read the ad nine thousand nine hundred sixty nine dodge dart sixteen thousand five hundred dollars. Nineteen sixty nine. Dodge dart very well built four forty. Tci seven twenty seven dana sixty with four fifty six in spool fiberglass front rear deck lead from bumper. Just put down the direct floor. Liner front end has been completely rebuilt. Everything has been changed including the torsion bars retires or hoosiers that don't have fifty miles on them. Amnesty distributors six. Al box brand new holly xp carb too much to list completely rewired with ron. Francis wiring also have the box with the extra wiring for other applications plus instructions also frontiers new and converted over to kelsey hayes. Four piston calipers shocks in front or new shocks rear. Our new drag shocks car is very fast. Title status is clean. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking here he goes again with another dart drag car. And you're right. I can't help that. I love dodge darts and i can't help that. I love drag car projects. They're just cool. I really do enjoy them. I think they're awesome. And i think that great project cars and this car just happens to be another dart. The reason why. I like this one so much is because it's pretty much ready to go to me. It looks like it just needs a few finishing touches and you're off to the races. I should say that like with any race car project. You'd go through this thing from top to bottom. But just based on what i see. I think it's a great candidate for a drag car project especially at under twenty grand. I mean this thing sitting sixteen five. I think there might be a little bit of room but you know just looking at the car and comparing it to other things that i've seen out there for maybe half the price the seems like a good bye. I will say this though. It may be kind of a handful on the street. And that's only because of the spool and the rear end ratio for those of you. That don't know a spool is a fully locked rear diff unlike locking diff the school locked at all times. So when you're turning you're gonna feel the rear end grabbing and gripping the road because the wheels will be unnaturally turning at the same rate of speed so it's kind of impractical parking taking turns and stuff. It might feel a little bit weird almost like if you're a four wheel drive on the street you know and you crank the wheel all the way and you try to turn. You're gonna feel that rear end like skipping almost The other issue that i saw was the four fifty six years. I think it would be really fun. Obviously light to light on the street. But i'd imagine if you're on the freeway a lot of could be an issue but that said you know a lot of people run these gears all the time even on the street so i guess it just depends on the type of driving. You'll be doing and if you're willing to put up with it it might be okay if you only take the car out occasionally on the streets but at sixteen thousand five hundred you have a great headstart to a fun strip car. That can possibly be driven on the street. It's a big lakhdar with some bigs and littles also has what looks to be centerline. Auto drags on it. So that's that's a plus in my book. I love those wheels. So big and little auto drags cool in my book. It's gotta side exit exhaust aluminum radiator. It's got a nice racing shift in it. Some cheap racing seats grant steering wheel. You know this things got some potential you know does it have its flaws sher- but we can work around those and we can take this platform as you get it and then make it your own. You know there's still room to improve and you know that's sure to tickle anymore. Part theseus fancy especially mind the thing even has really bars too so if you did drive it on the street the only addition to make it even more intimidating would probably be a parachute but discards cool has a ton of potential and it sure to turn heads on both the track and the street got nice orange paint a black bumble bee stripe. It's got a giant hood scoop on the front like the old school. I don't know what you call it like a pro street hood scoop. I guess I think that's the word i'm looking for. I think that's the description i can give. But it's not the typical hood that i would like to see on a mo- par but i guess it works. I like hemi hood scoops or six. Pack hood scoops. I think those are cool But it's got four. It's got the fiber last trunk so it's got four pins on that to hold it down Like i said it's got the whealy bars so cut that bad ass aesthetic to

"Mr mayor is new. Show from rubber karla faye and features a lot of fantastic people and the featuring of a lot of fantastic people is reason to watch it. It's ted danson as the new mayor of los angeles and this is just another one where we're timing is so bad really You know if you are in los angeles you are well aware of what having a somewhat. Bumbling somewhat ineffectual mayor or even having let's just say a mayor whose track record is mixed. Let's just say that. Let's say. Garcetti did some things that the beginning of the pandemic that seemed to be good and then not so much lately. That's an it is it. I'm trying to be tempered. We've definitely had a lot of evidence of what happens in a major city if the mayor is not perfect and so i found myself really kind of unable to laugh at a show where it's like. Ha ha ha. The mayor of los angeles is job is to go to mall. Openings and celery appearances your results on that one may vary as los angelino or at least a los angelino transplant. I also kind of got the feeling that tina fey and rubber karloff. Not so much with the knowing. Anything about los angeles and twenty twenty. The jokes are all really really lazy. Really really facile jokes about california. That in some cases are are two decades old our colleague. Ingo king reviewed it for us and she notes that one of the funniest jokes involves the other candidates who run for mayor against ten danson's character and you stop and realize that the joke that's being made about the other candidates including gary coleman's ghost and a libertarian. Porn star all relate to a recall election. That was fifteen years ago. I mean that is just not finger on the pulse and so all of these things if the show were funnier. It'd be funnier but let's not forget that. Mr mayor was originally conceived as thirty rock spin off that was going to be set in new york featuring alec baldwin reprising his role and baldwin was negotiating for the better part of a year per sources and when he backed out producers went out to ted danson. Ted danson lives in los angeles and did not want to relocate to new york so they moved the show to los an- to being set in los angeles and removed any traces of of its ties to thirty rock. So there's that in the back of your mind

I mean i think it's whenever you can play. You know it's a good thing. And i think the tennis world Has done a pretty good job of trying to play and keep the players safe I think the us open the catalyst. And i think or probably appreciating more. Now what the. Us open did seeing how difficult it has been with the australian open. So i think i think the. Us open really started. Everything engage some confidence players. and then You know and then you know what's happening with. The australian open is is pretty incredible minutes many every day. Something new You're at the mercy of the government and You know players have concerns like they should And there's some pretty strict quarantine common in australia. I mean some of those That's pretty tough. I mean and you know way different than the. Us open the us open really created a bumble. A look like the players were like going to camp. You know they're playing cards and having fun and and stuff. And i don't see that way you're in australia. So what are you gonna the takeaways from all this is the it's trillion government doesn't mess around. What what. What are you telling your players. But i imagine they're calling frequently for updates telling them be ready keep training keep working You know in every day. It's something new. We're trying to keep everybody updated in real time And that's players coaches parents. Lot of anxiety. I you thought your company. You had to get ready really quick because the i was you thought you were going to need to leave on december fourteenth and that was eating up people didn't know when do i take my vacation. Especially the guys that were playing late on now all of a sudden you're not rushing. It's it's even later so you know. Tennis players are creatures of habit. I mean they have you know so this has been very a lot of anxiety for the players.

Ryan Cabrera and WWE Star Alexa Bliss Are Engaged

"I think that social media is a reality in this world In the world that we live in in the world of sports entertainment. And i think that we have to learn how to live with it and i think we can actually use it as a tool for example recording this on sunday and today yesterday at the time this podcast comes out. It was everywhere. Alexa bliss announces that she's engaged A lot of alexa bliss fans are so happy for her lot of alexa. Bliss fans are very sad. Because i guess they thought that alexa bliss was going to marry them until she got engaged. It was so you're saying there's a chance. I saw on the not sam wrestling discord room. Where all are not. Sam shells that are signed up to patriot. Dot com slash. Sam wrestling. That we all get to chat There were a couple of them. That were upset. That alexa was engaged because they thought that that was going to be them. Unfortunately it's not but don't worry you still got the patriot community. You still got us. Not sam shells that are there for you. it's not. it's not all bad news but it was everywhere. She posted this video of of ryan. Cabrera popstar cabrera who she's been very publicly dating Proposing tour beautiful thing. You love is a wonderful thing and seeing join in holy matrimony and become even happier is wonderful. It's one of the happiest things if you are with the right person. The day the night the evening the afternoon that you get engaged one of the happiest times ever just such an expression of joy. It's beautiful. I love it but everybody's talking about it. I mean alexa. Bliss is a huge star. You know you've got. Wwe tweeting about it. And i probably should be. It's it's a little bit absurd to ignore it. You know not only is one of the biggest stars really realistically alexa. Bliss is one of the biggest stars in. wwe male or female. She's one of the most famous people in. Wwe so you know. And this is big. Wwe is big time. Now you got sasha banks over here on the mandalorian which you see. Sasha banks one of the big another one of the biggest stars in wwe and probably the biggest tv show. that's on the air right now. You see that happening which weird. The wwe isn't making a bigger deal out of that. Like if i were. Www shouting it from the rooftops. But you've got that going on at the same time you got to cherry public engagement. You know i mean. I feel like we should let's angle for a reality show. Let's get on the phone. I was watching total balas over the weekend. And i was like you know what i miss. When they would go to wrestlemainia. I was just sitting there waiting for them to go to wrestling. Like oh wait. There is no more wrestling. And that's when. I realized that i was watching total bells for the wrestling parts. They still got daniel bryan on the show. Obviously no more john cena. They're not going to wrestling shows anymore. So it's like oh. I like the balanced. But i'm still you know living in brima to seven but they're not gonna wrestling shows anymore so yes so let's get alexa. Bliss rang cabrera. Let's get blissfully something or other. You know you got bliss already in there you you got it. But here's what. I think needs to happen now that we've acknowledged. Wwe is acknowledged it's all over wwe social media platforms. I think that you gotta lean into it. And i think that you should use it. I think that this can be a lot of fun. Especially because ryan cabrera is also a public person. Here's the way. I think this needs to go. You had this segment on raw last week. Where nikki cross is talking to alexa. And there's this acknowledgement that they used to be friends. Which i think is great. We're not pretending that the election nikki partnership never happened is a big part of. Wwe at the time you know. We're still acknowledging it and alexis doing that. Weird phony friendly like almost like i'm in a trance. Peewee herman thing and nikki cross tells her alexa you gotta pick mere the fiend and alexa. As if it doesn't bother it all goes. Oh okay. I pick him. And walks away and nikki crosses befuddled by the whole thing befuddled. I love this. I think we need to keep this going. You know i look. This is the type of stuff. I want for alexa bliss and the this is why i say. Keep the fiend away from the universal championship. Keep the fiend away from the wwe championship because these are the types of stories. You can tell you know. I think that we should go back and look at who are friends. Were in annex t the start telling those stories and have somebody come out. Go like lexi. What are you doing things. You're you're not the same person what what's happening. I pick him and you know over. The course of a couple of weeks have her abandoning oliver. All friends and then finally ryan cabrera comes out on raw and it's like real life now it's like is this alexa. Bliss is this. What's her name lexi kaufman in real life. I don't know. I only know people by their wrestling names. But is this the real alexa. Bliss from real life. is the character alexa bliss now. We're mixing everything up. Which is what we should all be doing. That's the way wrestling is at. Its best mix everything up. And you've ryan cabrera out on raw and he's like alexa. I love you and she's like i love you. Do you know like yeah. Of course it you love me. I love you. We're we're doing great and he's like well. You're not the same person i thought. When we got engaged it would shake you out of this transfer inches. I'm not in a trance. I'm just seeing things for what they are for. The first time ryan cabrera goes lexi. I need you need you to pick you. Pick me or the fiend. She's kind of taken aback. She's like i didn't realize he felt that way. Ryan that's how i feel and she's like well net case i pick him. He's like what and then you hear bumble bumble bumble and the lights go out. Eat whatever those sounds are and tom phillips going. Oh no not here that's alexa. Bliss fiance pop sensation ryan cabrera and the red lights come on and the fiend is behind ryan cabrera and ryan cabrera's looking around and he's looking at alexa bliss. I what are you doing here. Like this is our real life and then he realized he gets his goosebumps. You realize the fiend is right behind him so he turns around and the phoenix cox's head and sticks his tongue out of his mask grabs ryan cabrera vice skull dips him over gives him a kiss on the forehead and he sister abigail ryan cabrera. Alexa bliss is real life. Fiance get sister abigail an alexa bliss just standing over him smiling. I love it man. I mean i i think that why not why not. I feel like it would be good for everybody involved. Like let's let's blur the lines here guys. Let's not pretend there's two separate entities as it's happening eventually we can tell the story of how like. Oh this is so wild in my personal and blah blah blah but while it's happening muster blending these lines with blurred altogether be like. That's a real fiancee right. Yup like the best is when you're trying to explain to a non wrestling fan. What storyline and what's not storyline. And they get confused because you're a little bit confused because you're not one hundred percent sure where the lines are and who's getting worked by what maybe. wwe tweeting about this was part of the storyline. All along are they even really engaged. I don't even know anymore. I don't know anything anymore. I guess i'm just going to sit here and watch monday night. Ron finds out. Find out what happens next. Because that's the way we should be watching anyway. Just let it play out and see what happens. I would love that if that happened. I would love it if that happened. Socket in our discord room. Says i love that. Sam has cabrera taking bumps like the fiend doesn't use the middle claw. He hit the mandible claw. After maybe alexa bliss puts the mandible claw him or something like that but is taking sister abigail. I mean we are laying out ryan cabrera. 'cause i want e. news. I want entertainment tonight. I want whatever extra whatever. Entertainment shows are left on television. I want people magazine. People dot com. I want everybody posting videos of being like popstar ryan cabrera. Remember him. Well i remember. I remember will now. He's getting laid out by the fiend on monday night raw. Because here's what happens. If you have a pop star that you grew up idolizing and he's getting laid out. Here's the way that works. You get the people who don't watch wrestling to not only get a glimpse of monday night raw but they get a glimpse of the theme. The is one the most unique properties the wwe has. The fiend is the type of visual. That went a non wrestling fan watches. They go what the hell is that. I'm going to have to tune in and see what that's all about. That's one of the strengths of the fiend. And if you got footage of ryan cabrera eating a sister. Abigail and his real life fiance alexa. Bliss is looking on happily in that weird fien state. You got money bro. you got money. I hope they're already thinking in that direction. If not. i'm in text. Bruce richard because somebody has to tell them get ryan cabrera on that show and lay that out. I think it'd be great. I think it'd be great. Congratulations to the two of them. But i have to believe that ryan cabrera. Whatever time of his life. I know i would if my fiance was a wrestler and she was like hey would you mind coming to raw and having the fiend. Give you sister abigail. I'd be like number one. That's awesome number two. After the show me. I get a picture of him in full gimmick. I really wish i could do that. I really wish i mean. I wish. I wish that. I could have one of the shows that i was at the fiend was at too. I wish i could just go like hey bro. Can we take a picture with you. Still in your gimmick and not. Be a weirdo. That doesn't deserve to be backstage. Because man do. I want that picture a really really. Do

"Good morning yeah. Hope you're doing well. Can you hear me so good. Good thank you right. today I want to talk about practices. You know quite often again we We may answer in analogy or in Entendre this is the expression of practice. Firstly the preface to the assemble first case sixty six of the book of equanimity case. First 'murder hornet' nest in U.S. destroyed with the use of technology

"Tiny technology is being used to track a huge problem. Yes, the Asian murder hornets and his 2020. We have to be worried about murder Hornets. Well, honey Kim Commandos show special Carline. We have Vikram I wre He's a PhD student at the University of Washington. And in July, he made the headlines and I actually watched the news report with him because he puts these low power lightweight, Ah wireless camera systems and he attached to the back of a live beetle to understand how to deploy a wireless vision in very small robots. Well, let me tell you about murder Hornets. They're about two inches long. I looked it up two inches long. How fast do you think these things go? Neuron to go 25 MPH these little murder awareness. So big room. Thank you so much for joining us. And let's talk about These little trackers that you're putting on these Hornets. How small, are they? Yes. So these these little trackers are about? Ah, a late six by 10 millimetres, they weigh a little more than a toothpick. Wow. So how exactly do they work? I mean, how do you attach it to the insect? Yeah. So we've actually tried a couple of different approaches for for attaching these little these all radio transmitters to the insects, But first a little note about how they work. Basically these things. They're sending out a radio signal periodically, for example, a couple times a second and the ideas that Buy, you know, listening to how strong that radio signals you can figure out how close you are to toothy. In fact, on the the goal was to be able to try to follow these things back to back to the nest. Now it's actually attach them on there. One of the purchase that I've used for working with some other insects before like beetles. Bumble bees a little drop of glue. Actually, super glue just works pretty well. For that. We found that in our in our first attempt when we're trying to tag one of these Hornets, they're actually a lot more active and some of the other animals I've worked with. And And you're doing this out in the field gets kind of tricky. And when they're moving around on, we put them on ice, Teo, you know to call them down. Make sure they don't. It'll move as much, but we still under getting a little bit of glue on one of one of the Hornets wings. So the other thing that we tried doing was just a little piece of dental floss, actually, um, we made a little news. Yeah. Yeah, it actually works really? Well, the you know, these animals have a There's three segments of their body, the head, the thorax and the abdomen and kind of joint between the lower too. There's uh, kind of skin your part where you could slip a little noose around and we were able to attach the tractor that way. Well, so, So how's the tracking going? I mean, so you put the transmitter on And it's doing my radio. Are you tracking them by like then by drone, or how exactly does that work? Yeah. So what we did was in the the hacking attempts that we've done. We've actually had a couple of people on the ground walking around with these tennis looking for, uh, basically looking for that signal, the same sort of approach that Uh, that has been used for, you know other types of wild by cracking applications. That's certainly something that I thought about mounting the same sort of thing on a grown really The only reason we didn't try. That was Just, you know, trying to get all this working in a short amount of time, but certainly doable, But basically we, uh you know, we attached the tag to the insect and released it to let it fly. And then we walk around and followed it back to back to its nest. And then So how long does the battery last cause it's gonna be teeny, tiny as well. Yeah, So that's actually one of the biggest calendars building anything. This small is you need some kind of power source and the battery and being one of the heaviest part of the whole thing. So the and you know exactly how long have battery lasts depends on a few different factors like, for example, how fast or how often it's transmitting. Um So, for example, the Ah The first, the first tracker that we used one of the ones that I built in the lab lasted about 12 hours when broadcasting appoints a second. Um, and so you know what? That's a long time. That's fact. That's fantastic. I mean, yeah, yeah, just a little little tiny thing. So So how is the tracking going so far? I mean, have you You were able to identify the nest and And have you have you had any other observations? Yeah. So on our second life tracking attempt So we found an excellent nest and that was eradicated this past weekend. I believe, um My expertise is more on the tech side, and I've been you know, through this whole effort. I've been working with folks at the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Um, a team of entomologists there, and so they went out and actually destroyed the hive.

Heather Holm on Bee- Friendly Gardens

"It dawned on me that as much as I know and as many experts as spoken to over the years about pollinator plants and pollinator gardens. I. Don't know as much at all about how a B.'s life history really works and what is it? What's a BS I view of my place other than the flowers and I wondered if you could kind of. Introduced us a little bit I know there's many different species of native bees but sort of generally speaking clue into how A. B. C.'s a place like our gardens. Sure. Yeah. As you said, the big the big take home messages just be diversity, right? So thirty thirty, seven, hundred species approximately in the US and each has. Basically, each overwintering in a different life stage than another So it really makes it challenging and our gardens before trying to supply supple supplemental nesting sites. For example, I always get the question well when the bees leave and and it always goes back to well, it depends on the kind of be and the thing to for people to remember is. You, know of those thirty seven hundred species about ninety percent have a solitary lifestyle. So they really have this narrow window of time during the growing season that they're active as adults. So we have you know it or the first base to come out in the spring in our active for four weeks maybe in. April or May depending on where you live But then on the other hand, we have a social be such as our bump native bumblebees and they will be active throughout the growing season and have very different strategies for overwintering. So I can see continue. BUMBLEBEES. Bumblebees I think is a good a good group or whatever to kind of start with them and give us examples of you know there. What are they looking for a? What are they see as a good place you know, etc.. And again beyond the flowers right I, mean, right long long beyond the flowers, the flowers particularly for bumblebees the fall blooming plants or critical because what's happening in the fall is the new queens produced in a bumble bee colony or coming out and they're practicing forging, and while they're visiting flowers to consume nectar, they're they're building up fat stores which will help them for their winter hibernation. So, most people are aware that bumblebees our annual colonies and unlike the European. Honeybee. which you know can survive the winner in the colony can be perennial at the end of the growing season. No matter where you live the bumblebees will perish except for those those new queens that are preparing to hibernate. So they're they're hibernating as adults and they go off and disperse from where they grew up in the nest where their mothers raised them and they're looking for. A, really nice insulated place to spend the winter. So that can be a number of different situations in a garden it. It could be that they tuck themselves into abandoned rodent hole. They may find a a most nest often they they're attracted to mouse nests in I live in the upper midwest we have very cold winters. So they're really looking for you know an insulated place but if you're further south, they may talk themselves just under a heavy pile of leaf litter. some hibernating Queens will people will find in their in their compost piles. Or at the key is you know a place that's

Tinder, Bumble...LinkedIn? Users Report Unwanted Advances On Networking Site

"Love. Well, let's see. There's tinder Bumble eHarmony linked in one of these is not like the other. The community guidelines for the professional networking website prohibit romantic advances, but it turns out quite a few people have used it for just that. Reporter Ben Bergman wrote about it for the tech side dot Ella and he joins us now. Welcome. Thanks. Good to be here. So Lincoln as a love site, you right? That women in particular have been receiving unwanted advances through linked in what kind of stories were they telling you? Well, you know, this is a pretty common thing for a lot of women, guys who say Hey, you're really beautiful. Do you wanna have coffee? And that's sometimes the most innocuous things that Khun B messages that are a lot more graphic than that Sometimes Why might it be a place where someone would look for a date? Well, there's too many dating app to choose from. I think a lot of people would say, but there's still a bit of a stigma for at least some people. Maybe people who are CEOs are a little bit more prominent in their field who don't want to be seen on a dating app. So they are perhaps on LinkedIn and not on dating apps and people will use it as a way to Connect on there instead of overtly being on a dating app. So obviously in the age of me to which has really exposed how women have been subjected to unwanted sexual advances in the workplace, you know, this is a place that is meant to be a networking site. So what kind of action has Lincoln taken. The company says it is taking action. It will follow up with users who have reported inappropriate messages, and it will also tell users who are blocked exactly why they were removed, which apparently it has not done up until now. It also says it's using a eye to detect possible problematic messages. And so it will. Flagged those messages and give you the opportunity to block them. The company also says, though, that users need to do more. It says users should be keeping a tighter network. And if you don't know someone if you don't think they should be in your network Then don't accept their friend request. On the other hand, you did speak to a dating coach from the harmony who said it's not inappropriate to ask for a date on linked in. What did she say? This was kind of surprising because I actually talked to a number of dating coaches and yes, that is a real job, apparently, And they say that there's a sense of authenticity there. You actually know where someone worked and went to school and the information there is much more real than other sites and that there's a lot of professionals just like you know, you may ask someone out at a professional networking event. You could do the same thing on linked in and they've met a lot of people and some of them themselves have met their significant others on lengthen. Has this been an issue for Lincoln users for awhile? Or is there something that has created an uptick? It's certainly nothing brand new. It's gotten a little bit worse over the years. But during the pandemic, I've seen anecdotally a lot more of this happening because what happens now is a lot of women will receive these messages, and then they will post them on Twitter and say linked in is not a dating site. Look at what happened. But during the pandemic, there's not really ways to meet people in person in the office or at bars or at parties. So it's all online and so linked in his one way to do that.

"She's incredible wow she was also so eager to go after what she wanted in dating and i'd be like wet you can't do that like i was guilty of being one of those people that brought her to this concept of women making the first move on bumble <hes> and and so since bumble started. I think it's been this incredible gift that i've been given as <hes> you know. I think that brands are representative of the people who built them and i knew early on that. If i didn't live my life empowered in every aspect of it then i was the whole thing would be alive li- like living the fumbles not not actually living the values that we're preaching to women than there's something inherently wrong with that and so it's been in one of the biggest the past four and a half years for me have been an incredible journey <hes> because i i challenge myself every day. Almost i sucked myself i was i was actually talking at lunch earlier about how i analyze everything in relation to just relationship dynamics and gender dynamics accent and probably to fault and in my own personal life but it's because all of this is <hes> you know trying to gain as much access to information that we can give give to women to actually make them feel empowered in their choices and their relationships and to get out of toxic ones. It's like opening people's eyes to the societal constructs that we've ball believed forever to be true and just saying like hey the doors right. They're open and walk out and you can live your life where you don't hurt anybody in the process and be kind respectful woah. What was the beginning like. I'm curious as to like what the response from the males on the app was like and i'm curious just the response in general too challenging the status quo and kind of like larger picture challenging. You know this misogynistic society. You know so like what what was that. Was there anything that we didn't see you know in the public that was happening. I'll tell you what was so interesting about it so when we first launched bumble and we re telling telling people about it. I'll never forget i was then i had been two of my access. One said to me. This is a cute little gig that you're doing another. Another one said a which is something that people always do took women. I feel like when they're starting businesses and then another said to me. Aren't you embarrassed to be a part of something. That's like a dating app as that's just so sleazy like don't you aren't you worried about your reputation and i remember thinking in my head..

"All right. So you know, it's also very exciting. Alex Williamson is on the show today, I know algebra Hamson is beyond cool. She is the chief brand officer of bumble, and I absolutely adore her. And I'm excited to zero smart hang out with her because what you're gonna learn now that you're having a baby is that you have to meet new people. Yeah, you're lucky because you have a friend, who's having a baby about the same time, which is awesome. Yes, I have a few people that I can actually, as the none that are local to me. So I don't really have people that I can say, hey, do you want to go to the park, or hey, do you want to do this, or get a class or anything like that? So, so bumble has this new thing called bumble bee F F? I don't know how new it is. But I think I love the idea of it. So whether you're a new mom or you move to a new city or your, you know, just need a friend who likes to, you know. Play ping pong or whatever it is similar, like minded people. So instead of because, you know, sometimes it's hard when you go to a class, either with a kid or you go to your ballet class. And, you know, you have no idea to do. They might be busy. They have enough friends, they're not interested. So it's nice to be able to go to a space where, you know, everyone's looking for has a rang. Exactly. It's cool. It's very cool. And they have other cool features too. So stay tuned. I can't wait to hear all about this. Alex Williamson from bumble coming up next, varicose and spider veins..

"Alive Deal the pain A baby All this, in misery A couple of calls and then Then You wanted something. Fun I wanted. Something fun for me Well. It'll be fun for your audience that's what I was thinking is going. To, be fun for everybody else yeah that's we're having the most fun. Is. When you're not, having fun right like for yesterday that was not. Fun, for me at all right well for makes you feel better from the. Conversation I had with off air I. Don't think she's having fun either that doesn't. Make me feel good at all it makes. Me feel the opposite of good. We've got a hammer this out I mean it's just best it's. It's it's out in the open Know things we need some closure here so yes okay so a week ago I was I brought to the airwaves and I realized, there are people, who couldn't give two. Craps about my personal. Life and I'm sorry you're more than welcome listen to something else some people seem to care about it and. I don't couch it in terms of a great dude or anything I'm just a guy like a lot of. Other guys, in this world. Trying to, make sense of it all I don't feel comfortable in a relationship I'm not good in relationships I suck at them But as I. Get, older I I see the value in exchanging feelings with people specifically lots of them well I mentioned a week ago that I deleted bumble because I met a girl off of bumble who seemed to embody everything that I was looking for from. Girl from, bumble not that I was ready to be in a relationship because I'm not but I I deleted bubble because I don't think I could find a grow on bumble who's better than, this girl that I met. Any stop looking elsewhere pretty. Much to whatever the other options wherever else you would. Look I never really looked elsewhere just opportunities would. Present themselves and I'd take girls out it's, the closest to a monogamous situation, you've been and even if it was just a week I know you hate. That word but it is a little bit the. Closest you've been to at. Least right and so That all fell apart yesterday because I went on the. Air and talked about how is. Retiring from dating I spent a lot of retired over the. Past couple of weeks and I didn't mean to say I wasn't going to, go? Out with anybody anymore I just spent I wasn't going to go out with a lot of people anymore but but I wanted to, focus on being a dad, because, that's all I did all weekend was the first weekend a long time. That, I hadn't gone out at all it was just with my son and as a result I ended up taking him to some really fun things and I realized what I'd be missing out on so my intention to say that I was going. To focus, more on being a dad came off to the girl that I was seeing gen as I was breaking up with her only I didn't mean it to sound like I was breaking, up with her I'll just. Preface it with this just. Putting myself in her mind frame for a second Friday. We had a extended conversation about ghosting and you. Defended the ghosting was okay right so that, could have been in her head, to like she was just thinking you were gone at this point could. Be. Could be We've. Never really had a, talk about what I say on the radio and how, much of it is real and any of that. Stuff I don't know what's real exactly for a long time I don't know what's real people will tell you here another show they'll say no that wasn't real that was real we don't. Really ever no Nope nor should you so you didn't get a chance. To to be here yesterday and. But you did hear the cut of the day I started. My day with it it was it was it was great and what was, your? What was your takeaway well I don't think she should have come from a radio perspective she should have called, right from a radio The greatest thing ever for just honing in on your relationship. I it's not a relationship well not anymore Yeah with the kind of feelings you guys have each other it's a. Relationship but you know I just felt like she was. Somewhat playing the victim and I said. That earlier so I'll say it, while, she's on..

"The need became more apparent and so that's how i shifted from this concept of mercy into what is now bumble which was very much similar concept if you think about it you know creating a brand in kindness a product rooted in good behavior and really putting women in charge of that creating the female internet and that was really the the beginning of bumble what was was the first name of a bundler where democracy moxie yes was i really wanted to be moxie so you know for anyone that's familiar with that word at insinuates that someone has gall our guts and is brave and because bumble was going to be this platform turning society on its head where women were going to make the first move which according to society that's not something women should do definitely not dating right i mean it's a old of time men do that men need to go first or so society said and says and so mark sue is going to be the name i couldn't trade market nutrit morgan there's somebody else had totally trademarked every corner of it's actually a soda somewhere and then there's some big pr firm or some consulting agency that's trademarked the heck out of it and i couldn't do it so i had to loan bumble them actually hated the name bumble at first i thought bumble how do you i did not think of the name bumble actually someone on our early team did and she had actually called her husband bumbling idiot and she's got this british accent who's like you know what about fumble because we'd all been searching the internet we literally putting random letters together to come up with words mean anything what were the other contenders okay i've come leap yeah because women were going to take the leap and make the first move and actually leap year is a very interesting story so in leap year folklore says that women would propose to men during leap gear and so we thought leap and then we.
