"I think we have enough respect for one another personally to ask ourselves some of the bigger questions. Woman to woman. We are the same age after all, really, just six months between us. And who is the senior? Oh, yeah. Mom. What exactly lies behind the crown's huge success. The British entertainment journalist and broadcaster Emma Bullimore offers her analysis tonight's viewers from Lisbon Tulip as will settle down to watch the next chapter of a familiar story. Told in tantalizing, colorful new detail. Syria's one began in 1947 as a young princess faced up to her royal duty. Now. Syria's four, which begins tonight enters the much talked about Diana years, taking us behind the closed door of her tempestuous marriage with Prince Charles. Netflix is notoriously secretive when it comes to viewing figures, But the show's global success tempted them to boast that a total of 73 million households around the world have watched the Syriza's that eye watering numbers. A big budget drama It's filmed in the UK It's certainly being a godsend for the streaming giant is streams and more than 190 countries, predominantly to a devoted millennial fan base. The crown has helped to secure a much needed older, more mainstream audience, transforming Netflix into something mom wants on her TV as well. What makes it so popular? Trick is creating an intimacy with these unknowable, frosty but world famous characters. Particular Queen Elizabeth, a strong woman with unique responsibility who has seen it all but says very little she's renowned for her reluctance to show emotion. So to sit in her bedroom, sharing her deepest fears. It feels revelator ary. And then there are those wonderful cameos from global icons like the moment JFK and Jackie O come to dinner at Buckingham Palace on the Queen manages to have an enlightening conversation with the president's wife. Growth and one did have someone who hates attention is much as I do, ended up in a goldfish bowl like the White House. I realize is actually a perverse logic to it. Cripplingly shy purse and ending up in this position. I have to explain that one to me. Well shy person will seek out someone strong to protect them. Yes, with you so far, and it's strong characters, often one who enjoys public life. Thrives on it. Then before you know it. The very person you have turned to in order to protect you is the very reason you're exposed. Yes, these moments are dramatized, sometimes completely imagined, and critics have certainly wondered about the accuracy off particular scenes. But there is more than a ring of truth here. These are actors. We trust performances. We want to believe Oscar winner Olivia Kamen leads the current cast alongside her. No Bonham Carter. Peter Morgan, an authority on Elizabeth, the writer of Helen Mirren's Oscar winning film, The Queen Paws all of his expertise into these scripts. Plus, there's the added bonus off the context of our shared history. The titillating chance to revisit events in our living memory. We see prime ministers come and go. John. Let's go. Is Winston Churchill through to Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher. Their meetings with the queen are notoriously private sacrosanct, but the crown gives us an access all areas pass. Aled is intriguing and quintessential about Britain is summed up in the monarchy. And in this story, the burden of tradition lives played out in front of the camera. Stresses of duty but with gorgeous costumes, nostalgia and classy storytelling. As the series goes in global popularity year on year it looks set to enjoy in the same way as the Windsors themselves. The British entertainment journalist and broadcaster Emma Bullimore, reflecting on the global success off the net flick JAMA.

"Sherman's to bolan would love to know that that's what people feel you're weighing in on you on the bull and memories in his legacy on our Facebook pages, while read some of those comments a little later, on to politics now where the president is standing by his comments the other day about possibly accepting dirt on his political rivals from a foreign government. Trump made the controversial remarks, ABC news this week and followed up on them in a Fox News interview earlier today. Anybody would present me with anything bed because they know how much I love this country. Nobody's going to present me with anything. The president said he's actually received a lot of support over those remarks, but some on both sides of the political aisle, see things differently. Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer said Trump's comments were shocking disgraceful. Undemocratic and un-american Republican House, minority leader Kevin McCarthy called Trump's remarks, hypothetical house speaker Nancy Pelosi says no one issue will trigger impeachment proceedings against President Trump paths to seek the truth for the American people and to hold the president accountable. It has nothing to do with politics, speaker Pelosi making those comments at the capitol yesterday. She says his behaviors sometimes ridiculous. She again, accused the president of engaging in quote criminal cover up and said he is ignoring the law and not upholding his oath of office. Former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper and current US, Senator Michael Bennet. I are going to be part of the first presidential primary debate to democrat. "You're listening to Russia's week in review. Hi, welcome back. What I just realized. I did not even intro the show the first hour with it began just jump straight into the stuff. And that's okay. Because you people know who I am. You know, what this is the phone number is? And you know, all that. So it was just. Efficiency just straighten. Presidential medal of freedom. Tiger woods. Just ex gory. Bullimore son has one of the most viciously hateful editorials. I have I have ever. We'll get to that in due course. I want to demonstrate for you here at the top of this hour. What being on the cutting edge of societal evolution mains? It was only yesterday on this program. That I discussed one of the characteristics of Trump derangement system in one of the one of the techniques of the left, and I'm going to let you hear it. I'm not gonna say the whole thing here because let's play it in a moment. But it was the monologue where I encouraged everybody to live in the present. Because that's where your life is. That's we're happiness resides. That's where the pursuit of happiness is. That's where the opportunity. To be all you can be or all you want to be. That's where it is not in the past and not in the future. I pointed out the left has corrupted both. The left looks at the past. All they see is all of this, outrageous, racism, and sexism and bigotry of the United States in the future. Well, that's dead too. Because you're going to die from this or that climate change or what have you? So you are so rounded you are inundated by apocalyptic fatalism. In both the past and the future the past. You can't live again unless you wanna live that way. But the future you can't possibly know. But you can certainly be affected by it. And I urged everybody the present if you're so focused on the past and the future you can't possibly enjoy your life. Your life is in the present. Here is how I said this yesterday has a payoff because you're going to see in the next bite following mind. That exactly what I said was agreed with by a psychiatrist describing Trump derangement system syndrome that here is what I said yesterday. I. Gonna leave. We're going to beat him. But he's not gonna leave all the left has the left cannot allow you to live in the present. In the present. There are million a half more jobs openings than there are jobs in the present. The US economy is doing gangbusters the tax cut. Did it's magic in the present American prosperity is at an all time high. But the left doesn't want you living in the present. And if you don't live in the present, there's no way you can enjoy yourself, folks, there's Louis if you're occupying by all the stuff in the past it happen. You weren't even alive. But you're out wringing your hands Oreo bid. It was horrible. And then you focus on the future where you may not even be able to live when you're sixty five because of climate change because this is going to happen. That's going to happen. This horrid you're not even able to live in the present. The president doesn't even occur to you. Because you're so focused on all the dome and gloom in the future coupled with all the misery of the past, and this is their precise. Zeiss objective. It is a key element to the left's psychological ploy to create constant fear and crisis negativism and pessimism. Oh, yeah. They'll talk about the present. And in negative ways to the last thing, they want anybody doing is enjoying themselves because the present the here and now the things that you're doing in the here. And now those of the things that matter toward your pursuit of happiness, your contentment the last thing they want is you happy not when Donald Trump's in the White House. So let's take you now to the network known as our TV. And that's Russian TV and they had a guest on their last night. Psychotherapist Nancy Collier, talking about Trump and Americans mental health. Listen to this data tells us that those who approve of President Trump's job performance are significantly more likely to experience negative emotions than his supporters disapprovers feel more negative than supporters. Nancy does this validate what Rush Limbaugh and his army of imitators, call Trump derangement syndrome? Does it really does? And anger does not lead to happiness. Anger leads to stress all of the stuff that Trump and this whole administration is fermenting leads to misery. So we don't get happy when we're hating. We don't get happy. When it's us against the other more hate does not make us. Well, and it does not make us happy. And it does. Not make us rich suicide is going up because the hallway that we're living. Not only the economic insecurity. Not only the rage. That's being fomented and worked not only the climate, insecurity. Not only the everywhere, you look somebody is being blown up about some reason for hate, right? But none of this works. So we've got to get back to some sanity. They make my case for me. Every time I opened up and get philosophical about him. Somebody's gonna come along think that they're criticizing me and actually validating. What I'm saying? Can't be happy during the Trump. Here's not permitted. Can't be happy at Nommik insecurity climate change. Can't be happy. Somebody somebody being blown up can't be happy. Don't want you to be happy. Not during the Trump years. That's not gonna work. That's not permissible. This is why I reach around and Pat myself on the back now, and then I don't do it as often as validated. But, but I do let's go to the Tiger Woods story here. Oh, by the way, there's Brian York. I'm looking at things I look for the tiger story. No question there were spying on Trump campaign, but how much this is Byron York thinking well third amount of spying understand. Is there is there spying that we don't know? Now. What did I do what the stupid tighter story? One. Somehow, I've misplace the Baltimore Sun editorial. I'm sorry, folks. I thought I had this all set up in the break and somebody came tampered with my stack Trump awards medal of freedom to Tiger Woods. Fact, we've got the sound bite grab somebody number five and six and seven here is Trump actually presenting the medal of freedom to Tiger Woods yesterday in the rose garden at the White House this evening, we are in the presence of a true legend, and extraordinary athlete who is transformed golf and achieve new levels of dominance. He's also a great person is a great guy tiger introduced countless new people to the sport of golf from every background and from every walk of life. He inspired millions of young Americans with his thrilling wire to wire victories. Tiger Woods is a global symbol of American excellence devotion, and Dr tiger endured. Knee surgery and four excruciating back surgeries. I know that you remember to that's not good. What it ended up good, including a spinal fusion in two thousand seventeen he fell from number one in the world rankings to one thousand one hundred and ninety ninth. I don't believe that even if he had one leg I don't believe that Tigers injuries were so profound that for two years. He could barely swing it club. As Tigar said there was a point in time. I didn't know if I ever do this again if he'd never play again, but Tigar fought through the terrible pain any fought all the way back to the summit of golf and when tiger got up to speak. He was genuinely choked up talking about his parents. I just wanna say this has been an unbelievable experience and to have the support that I've had for all these years. Some of your firm my entire life. And some of you are more than half my life. He's seen the good in the bad the highs and lows, and I would not be in this position with all of your help in ninety seven. Yes. Won the masters in enough hugging. My dad, and my mom, my dad's no longer hair. But my mom's here, I love you. Mom. Thank you. I wanna revisit something about this before we get to the predictable tearing down of Tiger Woods in the drive-by media. When tiger won the master's is fifth green jacket and his fifteenth major. The next day. I made a point of trying to share with you one of the life lessons to be learned here. And I remember how I began that man that monologue. If you. If you have ever been in the prison of being totally paralyzed with fear and fright over what other people think of you. Then remember two words Tiger Woods. They can talk about everything tiger overcame physically, and that's not insignificant, but he had to overcome something in my mind, much, greater, and it is perhaps if you if on the professional level skills are a given that everybody out there has a certain level of professional level skill the differences in the head of the winner. The psychology the mental makeup the mental toughness, the the -bility to focus champions. That's what tiger had overcome Tiger Woods on thanksgiving night back whenever it was. When he ran his car into the fire hydrant his life opened up in ways, you never thought. It would things that he had done that. He thought nobody would ever. Learn all came gushing out every blemish every negative everything that the image makers had tried to cover up. Pretend wasn't have came out in droves and everybody in America became instantly, privy and aware of all of the failings, quote unquote of Tiger Woods, and he knew it. So in addition to suffering injuries and having to make physical recovery's from those which is not insignificant. Tiger woods. Every from the moment. He returned to golf tournament golf first time he shows up at the masters after all of that after going to therapy after going to rehab after he knows that everybody on that golf course is looking at him not as Tiger Woods the golfer. But as Tiger Woods what they've. Just learned about him. None of it flattering. None of character-building. None of it positive. And he knows he knows that everybody is look any knows that many people now want him to fail. He knows that many people think he deserves to fail after being that kind of phony after living this secret life, and he deserves the never win again. Tiger pull the wool over. He knew all of this. He knew what everybody thought of him. And he had to be aware of that. There was a lot of negativism and a lot of people hoping he would fail a lot of people hoping he would never win. Again. A lot of people feeling betrayed who had bought the image made Tiger Woods. And now, they realize it wasn't anything. Specially wasn't anything cut above. He was just like everybody else except it can play golf. He had overcome the prison of what other people think of head to be. Able to faith literally thousands of people standing on the sidelines hoping he failed don't deny this. You know, how people are there, you probably know people who felt at least told you that they felt let down and betrayed and he doesn't deserve to win. I hope he never wins again. And then when he started playing again and failed to make cuts, you know, people who were happy, you probably may have been one of them. He undeserved a winning. I hope he never makes undercut open ever wins. Again. I heard this all over the place. He knew it. He had to face it each and every day, he left his house. It's something he had overcome most people. Never learn how to overcome the fear imprison of trying to be what others think you should what you think people want to be. And the reason is such a prison the prison of worrying about what people think of you is that everybody's raised this way. Everybody's raised to not be offensive and to ensure you're like nobody wants to be hated. Nobody is raised to be disliked. And hated everybody. It's just the exact opposite in the process. Trying to you make a very big mistake. And we all do we assume everybody judging us is perfect that they have their act together. And their judgments are valid if they think we're deficient. They're valid what we don't realize that everybody's as messed up everybody else. And then most everybody is still thinking about whatever really thinks them, not what they think of you. I maintained at having to overcome that aspect of this is as seminal achievement as recovering physically head help recovering physically had doctors had surgeons had the best doctors and surgeons in the best physical therapist and so forth, but the stuff inside his own head. Head. He had to do that all on his own. And he had to do it over the years. It did not happen automatically. He wasn't able to put out of his mind. What he knew everybody thought of had to find a way let it not affect him at a find a way to have it. Not get him down. Not get depressed, not cave in to not give up. It's really really hard. I know we all know people who are obsessed with what people think of them and when something goes wrong, and they think that everybody's down. We've seen how depressed those people get into spawned vague added..

"Let me ask you a question to be Republican. You just have to have our next to your name. That's quite frankly. That's what you have to do. Yes. You have. Do you have to save it, you you you specify unless you pay your independent? Yes. You have to say what what is your political -ffiliated? The doesn't say you have to be conservative. There's an awful lot of Republicans that are not conservative not anymore will unfortunately, there are fewer of them. But that doesn't necessarily mean. So so now, the Republican party should be should be renamed as a conservative party. You just made the claim that Baltimore County has a parasitic relationship with Bullimore city. You said they get a tremendous amount of benefits, and they don't pay any. That's correct. The fault of democratic leadership. Do something about it. Trump for fifty years will the fact of the matter is that you can't do anything about it. Because the only way that can that can be solved would be to merge, Baltimore City and Baltimore County. And there's no way in the in the world that the county is never going to happen. Well, I have a solution. I have it solutions to the illegal immigration problem. Okay. Especially if Mr. Trump chooses to but illegal immigrants into a sanctuary state called Maryland. That's fun. Everybody coming into Baltimore coming into Maryland should be required to read mayor pews books. Listen, I don't want to get into listen. I'm here anymore. Catherine Pugh is at Crookham. There's no great respect for Catherine Pugh. But, but the fact the matter is if if the the this amalgamation thing would occur and they came into Maryland, where do you think that wanna go? They want to go the county. And what do you think the county would do they'd say? Oh, no. We don't want them. They would want to go to your house because you're a democrat in favorable. They they'd come into the right? Breaking their lawbreakers who's a lawbreaker against the law who accept illegal alien without turning them over to the authorities. Well, no, these people no credit. Are protecting that strategy. You brought you've got it all backwards. These people are coming from these these countries coming at the United States and they're turning themselves in because they're seeking asylum. They're not breaking the law. They're actually coming the law, and you were proven wrong about this. You you and I had an argument about the number of weeks ago. I made the point that in its island seeker much stock in the first country. He comes to ask side of the country. He is. Shaping though. Now, the fact of matter is what the fact that the the the law says that anybody who comes they don't doesn't matter where they came from the law says that an individual who comes into the United States has the right to seek asylum. They're not guaranteed, but they have the right to seek asylum. That's what the law says that's in the constitution. Don't allow him in once. They're in. It's already a problem. Well, it's ever heard of of anchor babies rhino anchor babies, but the fact is that America they have a baby. And then they say my child is in American citizens into. No, I understand all that. Well, I appreciate the call Brett. But I think we're you are in favor of that. And you should be your holiday. The fact of matter is what the constitution says all I'm doing is say, I know you don't like to hear it. But that's what the constitution says, which is anyone who was born in the United States, regardless of whatever they are a citizen the United States. So you want to change that change the constitution? But we don't have that right now. Anyway, the lines are open. We want to. Folks think we have to take a break and make some money this. "That curious to see what the number is going to be as far as writing. And look if the game is good. I don't really care. So I know it's not the juiciest national championship match-up. I'm looking forward to it though. Because one senior national championship two teams legitimate chance to win. And you can't argue. This fact, both Texas Tech and Virginia would ultimately can go into this game saying, you know, what we can win we cut down to this. Men Texas Tech about their story as good as they were in the regular season. We'll get I gave an account for installment this way. Always gotta be careful with conference tournaments. Texas Tech lost to West Virginia. Who is under five hundred this year? Not a team rested up. Turned it back on CW tournament and completely different Texas Tech. Basically the first to sixty I would say wins on their first two sixty. Don't expect a whole lot of offense expected tight game. But I'm role with Cavaliers for twenty here on this morning. It's JJ after dark. John jastremski guiding you through the overnight right here on the fan hates seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six. So the Mets lose two out of three to Washington nationals. Zack Wheeler for the second straight start. Not particularly good concern when it comes to tech wills to starts. No big deal. Or is it something to be along the about as we move forward in this regular season big test for the Yankees awaits very good dominant. Over the lowly Bullimore Orioles..

"Headsail. Yes. Oh, so from for help off, they're wonderful, people, you wanna marry a hustle. Same favorite book. Right. Am I mine are five and six in no particular order? I think we're similar my favorite disorder. The Phoenix five. What why is that your favorite because? You know, coming off of goblet fire, which is just incredible thrill ride, especially the last third where the try was tournament starts. And then you have spoiler voldemort coming back in the fight in the graveyard and all that. It's absolutely chilling. And then you get to five and. I'm not sure what your expectations are at that moment. You're thinking, oh, it's really gonna increase in intensity. But JK does something really interesting, which is she makes Harry this really kind of angsty annoying teen, and I just found it one absolutely natural as a piece of character development. And have a prolonged falling out of that book. Right. He's like the thing is about Harry in that book is he's fifteen right? He's like I want to play sports and meet girls. But also I have to like I have to figure out what's going on with the dark Lord beam. We'll get in my mind. And all it's yeah. I have to save the world. I have to go train with snap who I hate. And who hates me. And all I wanna do is like a kiss a girl and go play sports, and this is really pissing me off. And so that just seemed like I get it. Like, I I understand that feeling that seemed really natural to me. And then also the other thing is he just that's a really brave thing for author to do. Like now after the best book in the series goblet fire. I'm gonna make my league character kind of unlikable. And I think that's really a ballsy courageous and earned thing to do. And it really sets up the back half of the. So I didn't read the books in real time. I read them all when seven was about when the last one was about to be released. I've binged them all was I didn't same thing did four like did this. Oh, you did the same thing. So did four in real time. Did it make a leap with four like in popularity and like like, I wonder if because four is obviously the pivot at like, okay? This is now a serious this no serious and speaking of someone so I wasn't reading at that time. But. You knew that vote. Like, I it was enough of a pop culture phenomenon at that point that you knew about it. If even if you didn't know about it. So the fact that Bullimore had come back was so big, and it was in the news people were talking about it. So I do think there was some kind of step up in popularity because you understood that the villain has now arrived on the scene after being hinted at for one to three books release fear a book. On the puck. I don't know. If I have a least I dunno. I think least is a little uncharitable, but chamber of secrets is probably the. Slowest read, but there's so much important stuffing. I like to I think chamber of secrets is underrated. I like I like January of secrets I mean, I I don't like I don't dislike any of them. But I think if there was one I had to put last it'd be chamber. But again, there's so much important setup above old Morton all that in there. I think one is the this one. I like one though one's going to set your setting up seven is sneakily in contention for me sneaky seven is amazing. The back that last ages. Unbelievable like emotionally cathartic and thrilling action. I don't watch the prints the oath the beginning of half blood prince's like when she she writes, the two prime ministers chapter. That's where she really gets a flex their muscles. And be like, oh, look, I can also do this. I can also do this other thing writing style. She's she's really incredible listeners, you know, that getting tickets to sporting events for friends and visitors used to stress me out there were too many sites to check on the secondary market. Am I getting a good deal? Am I getting the best deal? I can get what if there's a better season..

If you remember there was speculation about the possibility that it could have been a spaceship of some kind and before its official name was decided upon the name Rama was put forward, which is a reference to the alien spacecraft discovered under similar circumstances. In Arthur c Clark's nineteen Seventy-three science fiction book rendezvous with Rama. You find that concept kind of bizarre and synchronised. They're calling it Rama. They're making spaceships out of asteroids. Something's the concept is kind of bizarre. But you think that a more and more was that a spaceship or was that an asteroid was that a comet or is it a spaceship? Is Richard HOGAN right is ultimate throughly. I is that a spaceship was bay new spaceship is new horizons looking for spaceships to the shape of rocks. Did that idea for the new Rama project that happened from all that discovery what they're going to do is they're going to send what are called seat craft into space, and they're there to harvest material from space rocks, and then they're gonna use that feedstock to construct propulsion navigation, energy storage and other key systems on site with the three D printing and other technologies, and then they're going to transform. It's an awesome honor to get to speak to you, CLYDE. What a what a joy. Thank you. I absolutely respect. And love listening to the breadth scope of of what you and your team come up with for for things that are going on and putting them in. Various perspectives that it's it's mind blowing very very enjoyable. Thank you, well beyond you, well beyond entertainment. I guess I'd turned to like to to scrape at the idea of scale tonight, you've talked about you, you've traveled the idea the prophecy, and asteroids, and all of the whole of the effect impacts that has humankind. Micro and macro. So, you know, basically to the way that I know you're hearing this you of scale your Turkey, the asteroids and everything either you including the Russian one in the early nineteen hundreds. It's kind of like firecrackers. Driveway. Compared to those do what struck the the Gulf of Mexico? Created the Gulf of Mexico sixty five million years ago, which is truly something cataclysmic. Wiped out the dinosaurs. And we have some evidence for that. So if if that giant of the scale is going on what's going on now is his minor in comparison, certainly notable not not terribly threatening. And yet. Yet. We have we have prophecy. Not only includes a reference if you will to that cataclysmic flood that occurred. Everybody's familiar with that. And and what's going on in? Today's today's world. Everybody has known feels it censors it some even have the temerity to discuss it. Fewing since all coming to an end the last three or four decades. There's just that sense. People talk about it in terms. Few people really have a sense of it. It is it's. Refer to it in scripture so much of what was there? If I understand it from the right perspective. Shadley everybody. Yeah. You're right. If you understand it from the right perspective. It's it's frightening. It's it's it's mind blowing leash huge who. And what humankind us what we have to experience. It said in rightfully so rightfully so ninety nine percent of the prophecies in scripture have come through this to say that the last percent is going to occur. And if if you look even carefully. Listen to a few people who is truly studied this not far away at all. And and it becomes scary. Frightening whatever. But. Whereas in the time of Noah. Outplaying the concept introduced put seventy five dollars aside for the for the cold times. Because we might have a cold snap. Like, we're having is absolutely miniscule. When you think of everything being destroyed, we have the capacity to destroy the planet well in so far as our habitability goes anyway, right nothing. We can do even. We could ring a bell. Maybe. But that's about it. You know, we've got scientists saying please everybody knock it down to about one hundred hundred nuclear weapons because that would be enough to bring about all kinds of horrible terrible things. We've got them and the. But even with all those in I'm running out of time. He was all those one asteroid can make us feel so small one encounter with planet. X can make us feel so small one invasion by aliens would make us feel so small I mean think about that with all those nuclear weapons would be nothing compared to the advancements nothing compared to a major rock hitting this planet putting out of our misery. It's something to think about it. Something like say, it's slim because how big the earth is how we'd be affected by it. But just think about it for a moment and think about that prediction that was made seventeen years ago, and how they changed the odds, but still we have rocks coming close to us all the time. We'll be.

"Marvel studios. Black Panther showed Hollywood changing, it was always much more than just another superhero film. We don't know if it will be nominated at the Academy Awards voting for Oscar nominations opens this week. That was Vincent Dowd. Well, nowadays, it's getting harder to distinguish between the two formats that will be covered by the Golden Globes, TV and film as the best acting, directing and screenwriting talent seems to make no distinction between the big screen and the smaller screen when it comes to taking on work. Well to discuss some of the favorites for tonight's Golden Globes. And why you might be hearing a lot more about them as award season continues right up to next month's Oscars ceremony. We're joined in our London studio by the British entertainment writer, Emma, Bullimore, Emma. Welcome. So let's discuss I how film and TV are beginning to overlap. What's driving that? Well, it's interesting look at the nominees list. Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams. These are film stars there will nominated for TV categories. It's really starting to change. Netflix started this. I think it's made TV cool again and actually at a time where it's very expensive to go to the cinema and your option seemed to be big blockbusters which. Are in front of a green screen or little nashvillehomes that no one is actually going to see is very tempting for these great actors to think if I do something on TV, a it's cool again be there's some cachet, and I actually get to get into some really interesting material. So we're seeing a real shift and as a critic, how do you respond to this change? I think it's really exciting, and it's also really exciting for awards ceremonies because it tends to be the films are films that were released. I mean, some of them haven't even been released here yet and some of them were only released a week ago or something so people don't feel as engage whereas the things up for TV awards bodyguard killing eve, very scandal off things we've been talking about for ages. Let's get to some of the recommendations that you have in that our panel might have let's start with TV. Let's talk about a BBC film last year about a disgraced politician in the nineteen seventies, Jeremy Thorpe, the film is called a very English scandal or the TV program. Let's hear a bit more of the trailer for that before you tell us more about it. Liberal. Norman. Youngest man to lead the party. More than a century. Sure. Very dramatic. This is such an exciting coming together of British talents. You got Russell t Davis is such a fantastic writer and Hugh Grant who versus audience is a fall in love with his Iran Qatar actually getting to show that he can properly act, and this is fantastic performance from him with Ben Wishaw who was so celebrated as well. And I really hope it does. Well, tonight, he Hugh Grant is really doing some of the best stuff of his career. Isn't it? I've got I have to admit I loved him in Paddington to. He was fantastic. He was so willing to take care of himself. It's it's really great. Because he you know, he is a good actor, but he got causing this or four-page card type role. And now, it's really nice to see him blossom. Okay. Well, let's bring our guests in here. We have to bring Candace Allen in particular. You're still a member of the directors guild America. You get the tapes for all the nominated films. What's what's really impressed? You this season? Well, the the diversity not just the diversity in in the films like the big films like black Black Panther and so forth. But the. The the the smaller diversities in you know, the favorite. I mean who would have thought I mean, it's just unbelievable. I don't think it's going to win the Golden Globes because it's a bit too edgy widows, Cold War. I mean, there is just it's it's an interesting time. It's an interesting time when MS talking about in terms of the net the net flicks influence on what's going on in the industry. It's just blasted it open now. And there is there is still a place for going to spend all of that money to go and see certain things on the big screen. I mean, I think Rama for example. It's a net flix film. But to see the beauty of it, you need to be on a big screen, but other things like spider verse you really need to be immersed in it. And so that is a. I think the big screen is like books. There's a point where they think that it's not there. It's you're not going to need them anymore. But they come back because people want that particular experience in getting back to the Golden Globes in terms of film. I suspect that a stars born is going to to it's it's the fourth incarnation of this story people like love it in Hollywood, Bradley Cooper, did a wonderful job. I I was really impressed particularly with a backstage stuff really visceral. But it's fairly conservative. I'm upset that widows didn't get any love whatsoever from people because it's so edgy the favorite. I don't think is going to win. They green book, which again is a very conservative take on on interracial relations that gets a lot of love, you know, the the Golden Globes it's a big party and it's important for. The impetus. But in terms of really critical of evaluation of of what cinema is that's not what you go to the Golden Globes. It's less stuff. Isn't it? It's more of an industry party, and you get Emily blunt nominated for Mary Poppins bohemian rhapsody is there. It's it's allows you if you're not into really criticizing films, and almost pretentious about it. You can have a good time at the Golden Globes people that you recognize will be there. It's film and telly says very accessible in a way that some of the other all ceremonies aren't just just briefly. I wonder are you seeing a net. Flicks. Productions are they getting the same number of awards has the industry has the awards industry really pivoted to to to hand out Oscars and things at the to the same at the same rate to those kinds of productions. Yeah, it took a while. And it was really the crown that saw that that shift. They really wanted. They were very popular. But they wanted that cash. They wanted that gold standard of proper awards Baptist Globes. And now they're starting to get it. But what is interesting is that bodyguard will be there as a Netflix original, even though we know as as a BBC show they into all these car production. So they're taking credit for certain shows. We would not classes Netflix show. So interesting times. Okay, Paul assist and briefly with you. What would what would be your quick pick film? What what's piqued your interest? The one that I would really like to see just at least get noticed is is vice I think, it's such a brilliant idea because Cheney was such a key figure sort of half in the shadows in the Bush presidency. It would really be good to see. See him portrayed up there in this slightly comedy way. Okay. Fantastic. Well, thank you to all of my guests.
