Austin City Council today makes final decisions on the new budget for the police officer being a cadenas will. The Police Association believes the council is writing a political wave as they're set to make deep cuts into the department? Activists are calling for 50% cuts. Cadenas demands something else. I've had council members who have called me and who have told me quiet that they support the police department. However, they cannot do so publicly because it'll be political suicide. Well, I'm sorry. Nobody dragged you out of your house for you to become a City council member. The leader, he says, change is inevitable. But counsel should take their time with these police changes rather than make the cuts today. And then experiment. "Us We talked very Congressman Billy long about a variety of the issues of the day, including something that probably is true and mostly congressional districts in the country. A piece of infrastructure that is really rather dangerous. In your case. We're talking about a bridge on the bull creek in the in your district and ah, again our infrastructure. This is the one example of infrastructure problems all over this country. Jim, and in this particular case that steal the farmland of farmer had the river cutting 13 had both Creek cutting fame and he goes to the Army. Corbin Engineers say I want to build up Low water bridge, and they approved his plan. He built the bridge. They did not come back to inspect that he built a one foot or his contractor did that There's debate on how it got this big That is one foot taller than are supposed to be 18 feet wider than it was supposed to be. This is a little creek. And it's inevitable Creek. When it's a flood stage. A lot of people enjoyed canoeing and kayaking down. Uh, most recent fatality was a few weeks ago, and ah, 64 year old Rita Farrell to work in the post office there. Right outside of Springfield was tragically life ended last year, 13 months ago to other individuals they backed, thank spot. So when he built this low water crossings, supposedly low water crossing and the Army Corps of Engineers did not come back inspected, which they said they're in there, right, they said. All we have to do is look at the water quality. Water Act and make sure that it doesn't pollute stream. So I'm trying to work on legislation to get that chain back bridges. Fortunately, it's coming out. They're going to blast it out of there and go back and try and build a complying one that doesn't create a vortex or sucks down and The ground's kayakers. Jim's if you've got just a second that I did get one thing tied into this Corona virus thing, Dolly Parton. Did a poem on YouTube and her lime in there is if the virus don't kill us staying in Will and Andy Bar very, very good friend of mine, human breath gas or both Kentucky probably to my closest friends in Congress. Probably two of the nicest have not the nicest guys in Congress and Andy found his wife, deceased. Recently 39 years old, and she had had a heart condition. Seven year old nine year old little girls, Carol Barr, just the sweetest gal you ever met in your life and two young girls at home, and he found her deceased had a heart issue. She'd been to the doctor in March and the doctor's notes that Andy got today. He'd written echo after virus issues resolved. Because the governor of Kentucky, like a lot of these governors, Andy Bashir barred elective surgeries back in March. So a lot of you know, like one report on sauce is 65,000 people a month. Have deceased from being, you know, not allowed to have elective surgeries. And so there's a lot more deaths going on with cohle within. Just hold on. I think we need to take that in consideration, but to think that Cheryl Bars for Seeger was delayed until the virus inside. Well, she didn't live long enough to see the virus subsided. Now I am being widowed with Two Beautiful little girls 79 years old, So I just wanted I had obtained to break bread with Andy to saving after votes and just wanted, Teo. Let folks know there are things like that going on out. There is a tragic circumstance. You're working on the Broadband access in rural portions of America is more and more school systems are opting to send school to homeschooling, essentially online schooling. A lot of people don't have the access, do they? Now they don't jam and that that's the thing about the rule on urban divide that I've worked on ever since I came to Congress and we've got two or three different bills were working on in that regard and one thing that we did do on energy and commerce. This forest self help. We've got some of that past before this virus broke out, and it's been a godsend. And I don't think the tele how's going anywhere but telehealth on do any good if he don't have broadband access and camp. Talk to your doctor over the Internet, So, yeah, You're exactly right. We've got several bills dressy map, and I'm gonna position on energy and commerce where I can be pretty effective on that. Have a call from Bobby in Port ST Lucie, Florida for Missouri Congressman Billy Long. Hello, Bobby. Thank you, Jim. And you always seem to bring up something I was thinking about. You know, I'm cutting my court on cable and the Internet and I'm going with like Sam's on fire stuff. Which one thing today and and all of this, But you know you're saying what you need. You can get the Internet out in the country. Well, there are some places it varies from place to place, Bobby. No, I understand. But if you try to get it anywhere, we're Comcast or 18 teamwork. If you punch in your zip code, he usually says not available. I think wife, I'll be floating all over this country. For that point, But the other thing that I just brought that up because you mentioned it to him. He only pros I see with the school shutting down and Washington like you guessed it. They had to do Ah. Zoom, chat bribing. I like that. I wish all our representatives would stay away from K Street put Washington DC out in the middle of Nebraska. And Abby had. Why can't our representatives do thing online from our city hall? Our city Council chambers? Well, I don't know that you could make everything virtual in that regard. But with about a minute to go here, Billy your thoughts about Ah, well, I guess how Congress can work virtually and about broadband in rural areas. I think working virtually is fine when you when it's mandatory necessary, But, uh, this remote voting proxy voting that by foot just the rule, it wasn't loaded on. It was just the room Democrats by fourth where they could stay home and it's interesting when you watch on C span. People voting remotely. They're They're from New Jersey. They're from Virginia. You know, people are not coming in to Washington, D C or I'm taking two flights. Get out here and to fly to get home and a lot of other folks traveling a lot further than I do So some things can't be done remotely. But these zoom zoom committee is not like sitting there looking the witness in the face. And communicating directly with them. So some remote voting I think, if if you really have we had a two situations this year what Congressman had Children that were severely injured. They need to stay home. Stay private, little with him, and I think they should have been able to vote remotely. But now anybody can just by saying I I want to go out boating. Fair enough. All right. Thank you. Much Billie Appreciate it to Missouri Congressman Billy Long from Marie Seventh District, and we'll be back in just a moment. News, weather traffic and business every day here on NewsRadio. "From. Thanks so much. Larry gatlin, a dear friend of the fifteenth club on kale BJ. Welcome back at plummets at Scotty stares along with Brad and Ben Bucknell. Let's get you up to date on the NFL scores. NFL scoreboard. Brought to you by the great folks at Adele golf. Don't look now. But the Texans have taken the lead in Denver Houston leads the Broncos by a score of nineteen seventeen. Six forty four to play in that game chargers over the Seahawks. Twenty five to ten and the Rams are making a game of saints lead. The Rams thirty five twenty seven there at the end of the third quarter. And of course, the big Sunday night game tonight Packers and patriots. It's going to be Tom Brady against Aaron Rodgers Packers. Only three three and one patriots six and two. But anytime you get these two guys on the field. Scotty, it is gonna be a great great great thing to watch. The patriots at home are going to be. I think that's too tough for the Packers to handle. I'll take the patriots patriots favorite only by five and a half points. Yeah. Take him given the point. Let's start. Let's talk lines with Nestle golf course. Yeah. It's time for a state media report brought to you by the depicted cabaret where we would have been today, except they got a little boisterous over there with the games watching the Texans and such. Oh, yeah. Don't blame him at all. And also our friends at modest Tex-Mex right down the street from lines meeting. Got a mention a couple of things. There's a reason I play Houston at that bumper there is because in Houston, the Gus worth municipal course has been revitalized and their stories up on the internet encourage everybody to go look at that. That is a model for other cities to follow. Right. And I'm so disappointed right now in the way that our city council. They're fragmented. You know, it seems like everybody's got their own district. And they don't seem to care about saving a golf course in the center of the city, which is we desperately need to save sixty five thousand rounds ago every year more tournaments there than any other place in Austin eight has school teams have that as their practice facility juniors seniors. Hispanics, African Americans. Everybody plays there. It's very blue collar and the city has a chance to save it. They need to step up and do it. Now, they did have a. They did have a little resolution this week. To try to delay the negotiations at UT in the city on November twenty sixth. It'd be six months out from when the lease expires have to give each other notice on what their intentions are. And the city wants to say, well, let's push that back until the end of February before we sent these letters back and forth. Right. In the meantime, we will negotiate on what happens with the golf course. Right. There are plenty of things that you t wants from our city that our city could exchange with them for fair value and get that Greenspace save it for future generations. They need to step up and do it really. Appreciate it. If they do that course has got to be saved in. There is a group of included. And we'll go out and help them raise money to do the renovation. So the tax payers of Austin don't have to pay for the renovation, which of course, could use spiffing up bit better practice facilities enhanced clubhouse facilities and such. And and make it a facility, but it is for the whole city. Only twelve percent of the rounds are actually west Austin rounds. Right. It's the only golf course in the center of the city Hancocks only nine holes as we know. And then you've got you've got gray rock, and you got cazar and Jimmy clay Morris Williams for other parts of the city, but the players still come to me any because of the history it is a history. And of course, the history with the first African Americans play on that golf course you've got to think about that. Because it's got the struggle marker after historical marker and also the Greenspace Scotty because we're losing Greenspace in this town. At an unbelievable fashion. We've got Tzilker park. We've got Muny. We've got noise part peace park, north west park. So the grain spaces are going left and right in this town. Yeah. Waterloo park downtown. You know, they've spent a bunch of money on on that and the and the crate down there. The great cities in this country. Save their grains is great cities have great great space that that's a fact and Lance municipal was just voted. The favourite municipal golf course. In Austin, Ryan, the Austin chronicle reader's poll, and one of the thing I want to mention we're not gonna get political on this show. If we did believe that to you and Jeff. But on our ballot this week on Tuesday. Propositions see is parks and recreation bond issue, I certainly didn't vote. Yes. On all the propositions. Didn't they were couple of did? But this is a bond measure that's on the ballot. Where the city will set aside one hundred forty nine million dollars in bonds for the planning construction and renovation of parks and recreation centers in Austin as well as a crying land to build them. Again recreation is an important part of our social life in Austin green spaces important part. So we've got to support our parks depart. Yes. You know, they're they're they're struggling with money. All the time. I agree. And you know, you look at the university of Texas, and they do own by the Breckenridge track where the marriage student housing is they own the land. If you don't know where who they own that were hula it is and that area down by Mozart's that's the university of Texas own too. And I think they just have to do the right thing in it wears me out to hear that. Oh, UT needs the money. Are you kidding me? They don't need the money because they're one of the wealthiest universities in the country saying that I know that the board of regents have for these Sherry Rousselot spots ability to Texas Xs and the state of Texas to do the right thing. But the thing the right thing to do is not put a bed bath and beyond concrete that hundred twenty five acre track that would be unbelievable not only the people who live in that area who go to school in that area, and the people who travel from downtown Austin in the Westlake the infrastructure problems would be cataclysm. Smick for the city of Austin, if they do they do put thirty thousand people on that on that piece. You our last council had a chance to buy the property where the grove is going to be over at forty fifth and bull creek that could have bought that property for twenty seven million dollars for the appraised value for years ago. "By that. I want to talk about this focus group thing because it's just infecting American politics politics, and it's infecting Republican policies, and if it affects their ability to win elections. Focus groups in and of themselves. They're not a bad thing. They do help companies. Learn what their customers what? And in some fields. It's probably critical. I would think for example in the grocery store business. Finding out what your customers wish were in the store, and they're not in there. If you don't know that'd be a good thing to don't want. So it's not a totally useless kind of thing. But I've been around him is everybody, you know, back in my early days in radio what I was on the ascendancy at management of a very successful regional broadcasting company. We're doing the focus groups in the whole thing. I just never liked the concept in my opinion is always bad. If I need the audience to tell me what I ought to be doing on the radio. I shouldn't be involved in working in radio if the audience do better to do radio that I did the audience should be working radio. Here's a consulting groups that good for excuse me. Focus groups good for the good for. Paul all nervous in here. Do I sound like an insane democrat right now insanity is what you've got to give them back at response to their own insanity. You don't focus groups are good for you should be able to figure this out. What types of people alive for focus groups good for. People who don't know what they're doing a lot of people don't know what they do it in the fields that they're in solicited of customers telling you what they ought to do probably helps you, but if you're already good at what you do you shouldn't be listening to a focus group because you would know more than the for example, if I got in three hundred people who are listed as the by program and asked all three hundred what I should do other radio. And I listened to them. I'd be an idiot. Because if they all do how to do my show better than me. They should be doing my show. This is not to say that you can run around and never do anything. The your audience wants I provide a product that the audience likes. I think they like the fact that I present stories that they aren't gonna get in the newspaper on local television that I cover things and let them know what's going on in the community that I passionately argue a conservative point of view, or at least my point of view, which usually lines up with that. I do a show. I think they like all of those things, but I'm not gonna focus group my way out into doing it. So here's your focus group as you bring it all these people and you put them behind. You see a two way mirror. What way beer, whatever. The what is where the audience doesn't know that you're looking at it. They're seeing a mirror you're seeing them. And you ask a bunch of questions and you're bringing an eight or nine different groups. You get all of this stuff to try to come up with input as to what you ought to be doing in the field that you're doing. And it's just a thing that I understand why Democrats do it because Democrats and their politics is always catered toward giving people what they want. That's all Democrats are and who does it what welfare who doesn't want free. This who does it want free that? So the Democrats are going gonna run away for get on Medicare for all free health care for all who wouldn't want that Republicans can't ever match that. And they don't believe in it. They don't believe that we can simply spend ourselves into the ground. They don't believe that we can keep taking from the successful and giving to the unsuccessful in subsidizing everyone's life different philosophy. So for the Democrats have all your if you're all you're focused on is giving people all the crap that they say that they want and not. Worrying about how you would ever pay for it. Sure. You listen to the focus group said if you're a Republican you can't do that. For one thing. Many Republican issues are issues that people are shy about saying allowed because they've been told their entire lives for thinking that way, you're a bigot or racist, or this that or another thing how many people that are focused group right now, if you're willing to say, I think we ought to build the wall how many people that are focused group would be willing to get up there and say I got a real concern about in. Then, you know, some protected class of individuals or talk tough on immigration or any number of things that are out there. People don't want to say these things they don't even want to say that to a pollster much on the phone anonymously much less than a room with other people that are out there. The Republican candidate has to be somebody who has a vision of where people are and where to take you their community or their country. And if you don't have that these focus groups that are going to tell the consultants that tell you things in which you are going to lose, you know, who was the focus group type Republican Bob Dole in the campaign that he ran against Clinton in one thousand nine hundred ninety six was a focus group driven campaign. If Bob Dole had run a different kind of campaign. I'm not sure he would have won in the nineties. The economy was going pretty good. Maybe Clinton was always going to get himself but get himself reelected. But running a vapid issue this campaign based on nothing in which the things that really motivated frustrated American conservative voters and just leaving those things off the table is prescription to lose. Most almost all people who are in the center or to the right are horrified of the notion of Nancy Pelosi being the speaker of the United States. How would the world can you not run on that? Most people who are in the center and to the right thing that Maxine Waters is a Lou how can you not run on, you know, they're gonna make her a committee chairman, and I guarantee you they'll make maker a committee chairman, she'll scream break, if the Democrats get this thing back they don't make her chairman she'll scream races. And you know, they'll cave into her. You've got to be willing to run out of these things who will be called racist. No kidding. No kidding. In the same way that my career would have gone nowhere. If I would have done with all the focus groups were telling me to do don't talk about this don't like about that. If I did all the things that everyone else is being told they'd be doing the same show that everybody else is doing. I'd be as boring as the mayor bull creek over there. I would be. He doesn't know what he's doing. So probably they have a consultant who tells them what to do what he goes out and puts on the boring little crap that he puts out of the radio. Well, if I listened to everybody else tell me what it was that. I was supposed to do. I'd just be as boring as the people who are no good at my job. The same thing is true with regard to winning elections. You don't Trump says the theories right Iran against seventeen Republicans, and they were the brightest people in my party, and I beat them. All maybe I know what I'm doing. Now, maybe if you'd only gets two or three of them could have been marginalized in one of what? The fact is he get wet, and he gets very strong candidates. And he kind of knew what he was doing. Because he didn't listen to anybody who was telling him. You can't say this. You can't say that you can't do this. You can't do that at eleven thirty w I said, hey, Joe, how's your fantasy winning team? Doing awesome this week. I'm playing my guys from cornerstone community Bank data Quincy who can see the field and is on fire. Rick Nevada, any who's not afraid to call an audible to get the deal done faster and Chris service, who's really starting to light up the scoreboard, man. You put together a great team. With those cornerstone guys, I drafted a winner from a big Bank is he slow. I think he's from the Canadian league. One of my other wonders is hamstrung by an out of state won't committee out of state loan committee. My team calls its own place, and when crunch time hits is very efficient with clock management model. Make a trade not.
