Moo-Dunnit: How Beef Replaced Bison on the American Plainsand Plate
"Nearly, all the hamburgers in America today come from cows that spend at least part of their lives on the Great Plains that famous open range in the. American. West. So that is where we will go to start our story today to the American West before it was American before Europeans and their horses started showing up there in the late sixteen hundreds. So before there were cattle and before kind of United States had control of the planes in the. West you had a variety of American Indian policies, groups like the Comanche themselves essentially a very powerful empire across the West and they were hunting bison numbers for that time are kind of hard to come by. But it's estimated that there were about thirty to sixty million bison roaming through the middle of north. America. These are big grazing animals and what they can do is they can turn the abundant grasses of the West into animal flesh which then hunter's. Can Eat and so they become the foundation of the economy whenever I'm in the same spot as a cow I'm always kind of amazed at how big they are. But Bison is a heck of a lot bigger and faster. They can run about thirty five miles an hour faster than most horses, and they can pivot on both front and back hooves and literally turn on a dime. These are terrifying and dangerous creatures. It's not the kind of animal you'd. WanNa meet on foot and other key thing about them is that they're herd animals. So they gather at times massive herds, massive herds that would have represented a very appetizing dinner plus some warm and sturdy buffalo-hide imagine writing towards a herd of kind of terrifyingly huge bison if you're safely on horseback but how did native communities had them before horses very carefully so you could really only do it in the spring or summer when Bison gathered together to mate. You would do it on foot and you could work as a group, but it was difficult. You couldn't really do it fulltime. You could hunt by some kind of part time before the Horse, the planes really belong to the. Bison. But we now think of as plains tribes actually lived on the edges of the planes combining a little small-scale hunting with some farming. But once you had horses than well-coordinated hunters could hunt the animals very efficiently. The horses came with the Spanish. The native communities got a hold of some of those horses and horses quickly caught on they even changed the politics of the region, the communities that had more horsepower like the comanche kind of took over and they. Would kind of dominate everybody else and basically built these very successful empires empires that were built on Bison, hunting them and trading them with European settlers on the east coast. So people like the Comanche Kiowa were very successful from horseback and they may have actually been causing slow population declines in Bison. The story I heard him school is that white people killed off all the Bison and the truth is they did but the bison were already under a little bit of extra pressure. Thanks to the horses that white people brought. But waited until the spread of ranching and Commercial Bison hunting from Euro Americans to really collapse and by one thousand, nine, hundred, there's only maybe three hundred bison left. The West from at least thirty, million bison to just three hundred and about fifty years that by some more systematically wiped out in only a few decades thirty million bison were eventually replaced by thirty million cows de Bison izing roses really got started in the mid eighteen hundreds when people of European descent or beginning to move out west of the plains and start settling there. It was all sorts of people particularly I when it was scale so When what is Texas belong to Mexico you had lots of Mexicans who are setting up ranch's then you've got kind of poor white settlers anglos coming into the region setting things up as the American civil war approaches you got people who are kind of second and third sons of wealthy southern plantation families who can't inherit the family plantation and so they kind of go west to a place like Texas to set up kind of these small scale ranch's. Looked out at the planes and they thought, okay there are huge rangy creatures that live there why not replace them with other huge rangy creatures but why didn't they just stick with the bison that were already living there bison meat is freaking delicious and there is more of it per animal because Beissner. Bigger and bonus bison more already perfectly ecologically suited to the native. Grasslands and climate conditions. That's a really interesting question. I've I've thought about it a lot because in some ways, bison would be a very natural animal to raise. But then when I was reading diaries and things, I found that these people they were kind of disgusted bison they didn't view that as an animal that could be farmed. They saw it as a wild animal. and. So what's interesting about that is on one level people go with what they knew. Euro. Americans know about raising cattle, but another thing gets into their ideas of what is civilized and Dave you. The Bison is not the kind of animal that a civil in their minds a civilized people would raise and so cattle is the way to do it. So

How COVID accelerated a 20-year surge in demand for pets
"The pandemic is driving up demand for pets. There's an expert out there who says there was already a growing demand for pets, particularly dogs You're about to hear from Mark Cushing. He's the CEO of the Animal Policy group. He's the author of a book called Pet Nation. The Love Affair that changed America. And here's what he says is causing all of this is what he told Yahoo News. The truth is covert accelerated, but it just reflects what's been a 20 year, Serge And demand for Pat's particularly dogs. Adam and we have a shortage. I put the shore aged between 1 to 2 million dogs per year, forcing us to go overseas to some pretty rough neighborhoods. The supply needs. Who knew wanted two million shortage a year there were importing so this the extent that we have to go overseas to get them. I mean, we always thought that you're no spaying and neuter and the shelters are full and right. Well, that kind of might be the case. Because we drilled down a little bit deeper right now, and Cushing says that there's a network of animal shelters all across the U. S. And they shared dogs with each other. So when one shelter runs out, another shelter sends more. There are pockets in the deep South, Lower Midwest in southwest for shelters are full of animals. Most shelters air out of dogs. By noon on Saturday, and I'd say in the Greater New York area if you're looking for a dog, you better get there on Thursday or Friday. Shelters supply about 25% of all dogs annually. And so the issue isn't the fact that shelters are chock full when people don't want a shelter, puppy. No, no, The issue is there just aren't enough dogs. Southern shelter. Send dogs to the Northeast East. Tennessee Feeds Buffalo, Alabama, please. New Jersey, Mississippi feeds Minneapolis. Ella feeds Porter Ryan from originally in Seattle. So there's kind of a canine freedom train ad hoc economy here a sufficient But it's reflecting the fact that the shelter's particularly above the Mason Dixon line, and anybody remembers that phrase don't have dogs. So Christina they're moving dogs from shelter to shelter all across America, because some have greater demand than others. And why didn't we get into the pet industry? Why did we not invest in pet supplies? Good. Because you know how many supplies come with a pet? Well, you know, because you're getting a second one. Sure do. We're going to have double the supplies, double beds, the pooper scooper, the whole everything right? But even all the ancillary businesses that have cropped up and popped up because of that there are pet cemeteries. Right. There are people who all they do is take care of pets of wealthy people. That's all they do. There's a travel website that if you want to go stay in a beautiful home in Paris and take care of someone's poodle. You could do that for free. So just all you have to do is take care of the rest. All you have to do is take care of their pets. It's pet sitters like international or something and you go stay for free anywhere and take care of someone's lab. Oh, that's not
New York Jets defense bracing for some Buffalo Bills' trickery
"Looking at the Jets offense, Adam Gates was quoted as saying this week, Greg that he has a little bit of concern in terms of being properly prepared. For this bills defense he mentioned he mentioned quarter's coverage in particular because he said, We really don't see that kind of a look from the Gregg Williams defense in practice. No. What do you so what do you make of that? And how big an issue could that be knowing all of the time on the field that Every team in the NFL is missed through the course of the spring and summer. Well, it's funny. You say that I did last week. I did a deep dive on the bill defense. I was real curious, because you know you get a totally different feel when you watched 300 snaps in a row versus when I want your team with, you know each week, So you know, with this offseason, I was able to do that, and boy they Number one. They're very fundamentally discipline, but they're a little more multiple, and people might think when they blitz. They blitz a lot of different players from a lot of different spots, but they do play cover for quarters. It's a foundational coverage for Sean McDermott. He did that when he was in Carolina, and he's obviously brought it to Buffalo. And yeah, if you don't see it a lot. I mean, it's not a defense. We go. My God, What do we do? But you know there's certain concepts. That you want to run against quarters. Look, every zone has holes and every zone can't cover everything. Otherwise everybody would play the same zone. So you know there are certain route concepts where you wanted, basically flood zones. You want to attack the safety and the corner in quarters and Adam Gates knows how to do that. It's just they don't practice it a lot in their camp, but he knows how to do that. So we'll see. You know, it's obviously you need repetition against it, and I'm sure they're working on. They've worked on it this week. How much does it mean that the Jets defense who was pretty good at times last year particular with CJ Mosley Jamal Adams in the lineup, But you take those two guys out of it. And how many proven players do they have? And what are they going toe? How will that affect their defense? Greg Williams was one of the best in the league. He's been doing this a long time. You guys obviously know he was in Buffalo for Ah little bit, but it's a d coordinator. I think it's just 20 or 21st year doing this. Hey, knows an awful lot of things. He knows NFL offense. He's He's somewhat limited personnel, but he was a year ago is well and they actually played pretty well. If you want to sum up Greg Williams, you'd probably say that he's aggressive, but he also plays a ton of cover, too.

Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James expected to miss 2020 season after knee injury, per reports
"The Los Angeles chargers. Yeah we mentioned. Like the the injuries like Nick, for instance it. Bradley. Chubb is such a mystery right now, there's more mysterious injury situations around the league than I think we know there's less reporting, but Derwin James is injury on Sunday. We know know the extent to it but I know that it's the most caught or I think it's the most costly time injury that there's been since camp started. Because I think he brings out the best in the coaching staff getting to be more creative. This is a bad defense with a lot of talent last year they weren't in the top twenty most efficient defenses. A lot of good players. Yeah. No they didn't have Derwin James, but that's pretty disappointed. He unlocks the cornerbacks you know he he unlocks his tactic partner ratio Jenkins who played really well. I just think he's such a unique special talent losing James is devastating for this defense in it's GonNa put a little more pressure on their offense in tyrod the score some points because I don't think you can count on them being top five upside defense when Derwin James is not on the phone I don't like that term more pressure on tyrod Taylor to Scorpions I know that everyone is fascinated with tyrod Taylor right now it's plain out and it's not fair to him, but it's almost. I think it's like a little bit of the hard knocks after I know. I, mean, it's just that's what happened in Cleveland what a leader what a guy and I think he is, and I think the coaching staff really loves Anthony. Lynn loves tyrod Taylor the person in wants Tim to be functional but the problem is tyrod. Taylor stops being fun about three weeks from now and then you got a rookie quarterback that when. Coaching them. He did he had some moments to be fair when he was in Buffalo In Buffalo yes. Not In Cleveland and I just think that there was I don't know come on. I, mean Austin to me is the centerpiece on that offense I believe in until the end but they're wide receiver right now back he's not but look at their wide receiver position. So what how do you WanNa talk about scaring the defense with a mobile quarterback, but they can't do anything they had said they're gonNA. They're immobilizing how how versatile they can be through the air. I think it's a rough place for Justin. Herbert. To get starts early to I, don't like that at all.

Forever Free: Edmonia Lewis
"Hey Joel Lauren Hey so. You know what I feel like I have been I have I have not done our podcast. Justice. And the reason being is because you know every. So often we do an episode on historical person. And it seems that you do a lot of episodes about like strong influential women. And I do episodes on. Deeply White Dude's. Deeply disturbed man and I was like you know what? I'm going to remedy this today. I'm going to do it right and I had I had known very little about this person until I started doing my research, the more I learned about her the more I was. Like. Impressed about her. Just. Her talents and her very interesting life and everything. So today. I'm going to be doing an episode on Ed Monia Lewis. Yes I don't know who that is. So at Monia Lewis was the first professional and internationally known African American sculptor. Wa Yes so Her work was like well known all over the world during this time period but we'll get into it so. she was she is believed to have been born on July fourth eighteen, forty four that she didn't. She didn't know her her birthdate. Lot of people didn't warn free in Greenbush New York, which is now the city of Rent Rensselaer and her father was Afro Haitian while her mother her her name was Catherine Mike Lewis was of Mississauga, Gibb Way and African American descent. So she was both African American Haitian and native American Great. her mother was known as an excellent weaver in crafts woman while her father was a gentleman servant and her family background inspired Lewis in her later work. So, by the time she reached the age of nine. Both of her parents had died to maternal aunts adopted her and her older half brother whose name was Samuel. He was born in eighteen thirty five to lose his father and his first wife in Haiti and the family came to the United. States, when Samuel was a young child Samuel eventually became a barber at age twelve after his father died because he needed to start making money for the family and so he became a barber I know isn't as seventh grader giving you a haircut that's a nightmare but apparently. We're pulling your teeth both. Apparently. He was very good because eventually he moved out West in became an entrepreneur in a landowner and was very successful. but at the time, the children lived with their aunts near Niagara Falls for about four years and Louis in her aunt sold Agip way baskets and other items such as moccasins, embroidered blouses, tourists, visiting. Niagara. Falls, TORONTO, and Buffalo. So Little Gail. during this time Lewis went by her native American name, which was wildfire while her brother was called sunshine or sunrise, which is like these are just cool. ASS names. Great names may great names man. So in eighteen fifty, two Samuel F. for San Francisco leaving Lewis in the care of captain s mills, and Samuel provided for her board and education. Captain are mills was a an abolitionist. He was a well known abolitionists at the time. So in eighteen, fifty, six, she enrolled at New York, Central College McGraw Hill which was a baptist. School at McGraw Hill. Louis. Met many of the leading activists who would become mentors, patrons and possible subjects for her work as her artistic career developed. So during her summer term there in eighteen fifty-eight, she took classes in the primary department in preparation for college, and she was enrolled in primary courses in order to help advance her reading and writing skills along with other subjects of academia that we're not quite advanced enough for the academic department. So. In a later interview, she said that she left the school after three years having been quote declared to be wild. Oh Wow. Yeah. She said until I was twelve years old I led this wandering fishing and swimming and making moccasins I was then sent to school for three years in McGraw Hill was declared to be wild they could do nothing with me Oh Yeah. So they seem to have expected a lot from. A kid who had been grown up just like doing whatever she could to survive. So. Eight fifty nine when she was about fifteen years old her brother Samuel and abolitionists sent her to win Ohio where she attended the secondary Oberlin Academy Preparatory School for the full three year course before she entered Oberlin College, which was one of the first US higher learning institutions to admit women and people of Color. At the time, she changed her to Mary Monia Lewis and began to study art. So from here on out, she's known as Ed Monia Lewis. She boarded with Reverend John. Keep his wife from nine until she was forced from the college in eighteen sixty three. So I'll tell you about that in a second. But at Oberlin with a student population of one thousand Lewis was one of only thirty students of color. Yeah, Reverend keep was white a member of the board of trustees and avid evolutionist and a spokesperson for Co Education so throughout her life, she was kind of moved from from patron to patient as a young child mostly with abolitionist family Scott.

From Bill's Mafia and the fan base at large after hearing the news about that, so that was great, and we do want to welcome coach in at this time and coach. Obviously we're not the first. But congratulations anyway on the contract extension and My first question to you coach is and the timing may not have lined up right where you were around your players. But was there an announcement made? Probably not by you. Somebody else probably had to do this. Knowing how humble you are. But Did somebody else make the announcement about your contract extension to the players. And if so, what was the reaction? I'm kind of predicting we're envisioning a jubilant locker room, people hopping up and down and going bananas. I know the way that you know, social media works and media over all these days, the players knew about it rather quickly. It's a little bit unique. Timing with, you know the players in the building, you know, usually These things happen sometimes in the off season, all season months when the players are away, and so it's a little bit unique from that standpoint, But, yeah, the players found out pretty quickly and And, Ah, you know, certainly appreciate their their thoughts and their well wishes and everything, and it's going to be great to be able to raise Our kids in western New York for the first year. Your future at least, Yeah, That's one of the things I thought about when it was announced yesterday. Your kid's going. They're going to Buffalo kids, You know that now and I know they weren't born here. But Their formative years. They're gonna be right here in western New York, and I know that you know for me. I was a dad too. And I'm all my kids are western New York. Er zzzz. Well, that's kind of got to give you a sense, particularly in the profession of coaching. Where You know, you pitch a tent here almost like nomads at certain points in your career. Now, have it right now. Have that stability You gotta feel really good about your family having a place where they can really sink some deep roots. Yeah, we've been, you know, very happy with the community. It just it fits us and hopefully we fit the community as well. And people in Buffalo around Buffalo in western New York. Couldn't be nicer. It's been a great experience for us and just becoming part of the community and a lot of ways. Hopefully, we're giving A cz much to the communities were getting from the community in terms of giving back, uh, you know, And so it's it is nice to see our kids to be ableto get their feet firmly planted in the ground and Make their friends that they've made and be ableto Hopefully continue building those friendships in the years to come.

Buffalo Bills’ Tre’Davious White not among 66 NFL opt outs
"Was D day. When it came to NFL players, opting out 66 players around the NFL decided to sit out the season. The deadline was four o'clock eastern time. That was part of a plan. At the NFL and the Players Association approved on July 24th the open training camp as schedule as well as canceling preseason games in Fitzsimmons. One guy decided to let people know exactly what he was thinking about doing. And boy he called Holy. You know what for, and his name, Mr Davis. Why did the Buffalo bills he decided to not opt out after putting on social media that he was considering it. You've known me more than a minute. I'm not in the habit of telling grown folks what to do but hatred, Davis If you're going to opt out, dude, don't put it on social media. If you're going to think about doing anything, just leave social media be. It is not worth it because he caught a bunch of holy. You know what from supposed fans out there? Trying to give him advice about what he should do. And that also leads me to another part of that story, Freddie because today V is white, even going back to his days at L s U. It has always been the ultimate team guy. And when, when bills fans were calling him selfish for opting out, That's one of the dumbest things as a fan of the team or a player that you could do now we all understand that, at least in my opinion. Hey, if not if he isn't the best player on the bills Freddie. He's one of the top two at worst three, but he's probably the best player on that team led the NFL and picks last year. A pro bowler. You know, he is just that you were in 27 buffalo is a is a lock down bad, eh? At corner.
New York - Buffalo Bills' Tre'Davious White Still Deciding If He's Going To Opt Out
"Even amidst the Kobe pandemic. There's also news at one bills drive. As we await cheaply today. The final decision by one for devious white as to whether or not he is opting in, or opting out for the 2020 season in a zoom call interview with the media yesterday, he said he was still undecided, said he was going to talk about it with his wife. Pray on it last night. So we hope to get word on that, knowing the four o'clock deadline is fast approaching for players to submit. Ah, whether they are opting out whether it's voluntarily or with a high risk medical condition.
Wil There Be A 2020 Season For The Dolphins
"The Dolphins just had their first player opt out of the season, the wide receiver Allen Hurns decided believe he's got a baby on the way. And so there's There's reason why players decided not to play this season question is that we're gonna have a year it all well. We're pleased to be joined by a Mondo Salgueiros of Miami Herald columnist covering the Miami Dolphins, the NFL The author of the upcoming book 100 Things Dolphin Fans should know and do Before they die. I will be out on September 8. And you follow him on Twitter at Armando saw Gary Marty Armando. Good morning, Jimmy. How are you, sir? I'm doing pretty well, my friend. I hope one of the things in your new upcoming book 100 things to do before Dolphin fans need to Dubuque and no, before they die is Actually being able to watch a dolphin football game in 2000 and 20. Do you think that'll happen? Well, I believe that there will be ableto watch a game or two or five. You know, at the beginning of the season, I don't think that's the major challenge a cz we've seen with the other sports. The launch is possible and the launch is often successful. I don't know about the landing. And the reason is, obviously you know, no one can for tell what the situation is going to be around the nation in December. In January. We don't know what we don't know. So I think that it's pretty fair to say that the NFL season will we'll get off on time. The Dolphins play the New England Patriots on September 13th. And I'm pretty confident that you know that game will will happen. But if you're gonna ask me well, will they be in Buffalo? Ah for the final game of the season in January. There's no way I can tell you that. You know, it's a tough call right now. I mean, you look at the Marlins and now what happened there and lower matter where they sit around in a circle or something. What were they doing? It's just discernibly. Um, are you allowed out there our mother or the the beat reporters a lot out there or not at this Att. This point during the acclamation period, and that's what they're going through now with strength and conditioning and walk throughs. The teams, or at least the Dolphins have not opened there. "Chris Taylor. On an extension for him. because. They were really happy with the job he did there. They were working. Like I think that there's other coaches there who have either some. I don't know if they're extensions or options. There are working on those like an agent told me that they were working on contracts for some of their H. L. Guys, even some of their NHL guys because they have time then this morning, all of a sudden. They're like it's over like until this morning Jason. Botterill was going at about like he had the job so I would say the. The answer, your question is probably yes. Jeff but I don't know that sure. How would you characterize the last three years? The Buffalo sabres under the bottle I mean I don't I. Don't know that three years really is enough to evaluate a general manager to be honest, but that's all we have. How are you going to look back at what we just saw in these last three years from bottle? I think the answer is incomplete. Again like I said some of the things that they did. Was! Directed at them from ownership, but other things you've got to take the heat for, and honestly we're probably not gonNA. Know for another three years. If bottle did a good job or not, I mean look the. And when you win in this business, that's what happens. But to be honest, I don't look at it and say I really feel we have a full. Fare picture of what he did, do you? Know. I think. I made this point a couple of different times on the podcast this season. This is a team that I would characterize as in reflection. They're trying to figure out what they have in Casey Mental Stat. Can he be a number to center behind Jackal? I? Don't know They're trying to figure out what they have in taste, Thomson, can he be an NHL? Player part of the Rhino. Rally trade we. We don't know we know about Jack Michael. He was there of course previous Jason, botterill but we know that Rosina's. Darlene is going to be an excellent defense for a long time. in the NHL. We suspect think Yoko Harju for new land. Deal could turn out to be really good for them. I think it already has no I. Think we set it at the minute was done. This looks like a win. For the for the Buffalo Sabres but I'll I'll look at Buffalo, and you made this point earlier on this season, and maybe even last season on the podcast as well. What's the first thing that Joel Quenneville always asks before he takes a new head coaching job. WHO's a goalie? and. That's the one thing that buffalo never had. I liked Carter Hutton a lot. I liked Carter. Hutton I like Lena's ullmark. I'm GonNa really like Logan who goaltender of the future there, but they don't have the goalie, and when you're a team that's in reflection. When you're a building team man, a good goaltender can erase a lot of mistakes and extend people's careers to me. This is going to be once again. The lesson of shore up your goal tending I before anything else. Well you know Carter Hutton. It's interesting. He didn't landless Hausky. Did an article recently were hot and talked about I guess some semi surgery had done You know I hope it works out for them because I, like it. I liked Carter Hutton a lot too great story. Great Story, but. I. Don't know it so weird to me because I thought I thought it was going to be another year for him and it just. Like I, want the Sabers Duale because I think their fans deserve it, you're you should be rewarded for being that. Good a fan base once in a while right and if you're sabres fans, you're sitting here today and you're going. Why are we so invested in this and it's not good. What do you think happens with the roster now? Again this is a rookie general manager. We don't know much about how atoms is going to work in this capacity other than it's going to be in conjunction with the pagodas you've talked plenty about managing upwards. more than were, and how important that is for general manager today's NHL. If you're a member of the Buffalo Sabres a player, I mean how you feeling right now. You're thinking you're going again. Now the one thing is I like I think the players like Gruber. I think they do. Jack certainly does Jack Legal certainly does Krueger said today? I'm the coach I think he was wondering. If you know we were all GonNa, 'cause we've talked about how the word was. His influence was growing. And he said. Signed on here as the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres and I'm very proud to continue. There's a lot of emotions attached with the decisions that were made today, but all that matters now is the actions that we take moving forward, and my actions will continue to be as the head coach. Kevin already mentioned it. Our relationship developed extremely organically. But I have to think his opinions going to matter here, so the players probably look at that and say okay, but I think that there's gotta be a certain amount of this again. This again, the story continues. There is no savior coming right now. no one on the horizon that's going to turn the buffalo sabres fortunes around which is why it'll be fascinating to watch the off season whenever that happens to see what Kevin Adams new general manager. The Buffalo Sabres does Taro. Suture Modo. Where are you now for joining us on another edition of thirty one thoughts the podcast?.

"Asap Pay Villa Laino pay. Christian Air Hof pay whomever. The Buffalo. SABRES are open for business I. Think you've gotTA wonder about it. Right again. They were asked as the drive. This is me you don't believe in the draft anymore and teargas own a. we still believe in the draft. That is the cornerstone of the growth of many sports franchise is. Draft well. And develop your young players, and we're still one hundred percent on that track which you have to, but got a lot of CAPRA vailable. They do have a lot of our as but they've got a lot of cap room available. We'll see. All the. They're not gonNA play. For nine months while nine months since they last played, but they're not gonNA play probably until January now they've got time, but whatever the pitch was, they didn't like it. They did not like it and I think it was also. Nation of the pitch and I think you know whatever changes organizationally. They were kind of told to make Kevin Adams. He went on a road trip late. In the regular season. He travel with the team that raised eyebrows. I mean this person has sent me. That quote couldn't have been the only guy aside. People saw the writing on the wall and I think we're just surprised that it came this quickly. Pretty sure that was the DADS trip as well I think so, that Adams remember getting attacks. At that time, saying an interesting development, the reason I. Ask about you know. Is this the buffalo sabres looking to load up in free agency like they did in the early Gula years was Kim Populus quote today, which is, we don't think this is a rebuild. So on the one hand they're tearing things down. You Know Rochester. Bom New General Manager, scouting staff. There's a lot of tearing down, but in their mind. Here's Kimba. Gula, saying, we're not rebuilding here. It sounds to me like this is going to be restock and the restocking now. With general manager, that doesn't have any NHL experience as you pointed out early on. He is very much, and has been in the orbit of the is for ten years or so so he is well known to the team have terrible Gula, saying not only we had too many differences of opinion with Jason Botterill but also saying we felt we weren't being heard this very much sounds to me like. This is going to be pagodas with a couple of hands on the steering wheel here. They will be making the decisions from now on. Thank you very much. Would that be fair? Well, I! Think they always have I think yes, but I think they always have like I remember when Darcy regear took over, or or they took over under Darcy regeer. One of the things that I know revere felt was that there was a lot more interference from ownership then he used to. When he was hired, the sabers were like a model organization, and they said the general manager runs the team, and we trust you to run the team. And sometimes it worked sometimes didn't like most organizations do, but I know. He felt that the pagodas were incredibly involved more so than he was used to, and I think that's different now like back then what? We're organizations worth not what they're worth like now and you better expect interference. Your owner is going to be involved, but I definitely think the pool is are going to have a big say, but the other thing I'm sitting here. I was talking about this today with someone. You've got to add. Like even if you WANNA go to video scouting which they might WanNa. Do you have to have people and you have to have? Just some smart people people that might not want the spotlight like someone said to me today, the two guys that would make a lot of sense for buffalo right now who liked to work and have ties to the organization and don't need attention. Our Guys Lake Rick deadly. And Scott loose now. Both of those guys working for other organizations Dudley works for Carolina and loose works for Vegas. But you know daily, obviously as a huge tie into Buffalo, and Scott Loses Dad obviously is a big tide of buffalo and he's got a tie. They're like these guys that you probably want to bring in because they love to find players, and they do a good job of finding players. In that's what you have to do especially. Draft. Eligible players and I think that you're going to have to add whether you like it or not. You're going to have to add some bodies there because I think asking Ralph Krueger as a coach and Kevin Adams as a GM to do all of this. It's way too much, so you've got to add somebody and I and I hope they're smart about it or else. They're not gonNA. It's not gonNA. GET BETTER! I can understand people wanting to thin down the heard a little bit, but you've got to be reasonable. You know I mean you have to spend money on finding players, especially those hidden gems and I think it's a big mistake. If they just say you know what it hasn't worked, so we're getting it I. Don't get that you know I wonder considering there's a thing called the planes now and we'll see if we get our fingers crossed, the NHL can pull this off and get the game back on ice, but Buffalo Sabres have take two els and turn them into WS. Are we having this exact same conversation? Does this organization go through all of this? If, they're in the plans in the twenty four team universe. It's a great question I mean like like I'll tell you like someone told me that..

"Pushed against them I think that some of those decisions may have been the ones we saw today changes in some of their coaching and scouting staff and their assistant general managers I think he pushed against them, but also I believe that whatever bottles plan wise in terms of pushing forward with the team in the budget. They didn't agree with it either, and that's kind of where we are, and you know the one thing I will say this laudable saying that the goals are losing a fortune, and they're making the changes because they're running out of money or whatever. Look if you look at their stock price, they're getting hammered. There's no question about it. But what someone said to me is everywhere in sports is about to make these changes that owners are getting hammered just like every business owner out there is getting hammered by the Corona Virus says contracts or abode to change an hockey and every sport. There's going to be less term. There's going to be pandemic wording in these contracts and in the states. You'll know more what this is in Canada. You're going to become an at will employee, which is going to make it easier for them to terminate you and also maybe for you to get out of a contract to. The getting hammered for their finances here, this person said to me and this is a different person when I was. referencing earlier more NHL teams that he wouldn't be surprised that New Jersey which is about to do, some hiring also looks at it this way to a leaner staff with more favourable contract, wording the ownership. Okay you started that answer off talking about something happening in the three weeks since Kim Gula said. Bottles are guy were coming back with with Jason Botterill Can I. Put forward suggestion. Sure that something was jackal. And that's something was a quote by Jaco on his exit, saying he's frustrated. And if you read between the lines, you can tell, but he's an elite level player He's watching Connor Magee peer-group same draft Gordon. The playoffs collect individual trophies, etc, and he's going back. Home in the spring was Jack. The something that happened in the three weeks. You know I think it's impossible not to hear what he's saying, but again I think that people have heard Eichel say this before. It's not like it's a secret, you know. The one thing is remember year ago when Edmonds and had another change. You know people said to me Connor mcdavid. Is he ever going to ask for trade? And you know I, said Radio Edmonds and last year that I thought the oilers had two years to sort this out. And, then they had to worry that maybe mcdavid would get fed up. I don't know how much time buffalo has. They're like now year later. Connor mcdavid feels completely different the oilers. Look like a much better team and I'm sure that he's much happier now. Because that's all he wants to do is win. I really think that the sabers do have to be looking at this and wondering. I don't know that I. Don't I'm not saying jackals gone to them and said I wanna be traded, but you have to be worried about the possibility of it. and. The one thing here, too, and you cannot blame a roll like the contract is going to turn out to be a great deal for the Sabers I. Think the skinner one. That's a much bigger question. I don't think Jason. Wanted to give Jack Eichel that contract and ownership said we're doing it and I don't think that Jason. botterill wanted to give jeff skinner. That deal I think what bottle wanted to do was offer big money for a low term Jason from what I heard is not a term guy. He says, too. Many teams get burned by those mistakes and I. Think he was overruled but I think what they're looking at right here is. There's a finite amount of time here before I says I've had enough, and I do think that is on the mind of the sabers organization. So then do we see the Buffalo? Sabres behave as if this is the first few weeks of Terry Pergola buying the Buffalo sabres which is go by me free agents. We need to audition for Jack here we need to. To Show Jack Eichel There were serious and committed to making the playoffs..

"Welcome one the PODCAST, just a quick shift edition hear the news of the day while it began early, and it was the dismissal of Jason Botterill. As general manager of the Buffalo Sabres, Kevin. Adams takes over, but then Elliott. After the press conference with Kim, Gula Terry Pergola and the new general manager, more dominoes fell as we record this podcast six, zero, three eastern on a Tuesday night. What is the very latest well? The very latest is that in addition to what you mentioned they did were Jason Botterill was? Let go and Assistance Randy. Sexton Steve Greeley the let go of Chris Taylor who was the head coach of their. Their American hockey, League team in Rochester team done really well the past couple of years and his staff and also let go was Ryan Jankowski, the director of Amateur Scouting, and what I'm told a good chunk of their scouting department, so I think we're still trying to figure out. Where is all going to land? But this is a massive massive bloodletting of the Buffalo Sabres. Give us some context here for maybe perhaps new hockey fans that haven't seen something like this. This is not just the NHL team. This goes deeper and this goes into different departments How many times if ever have you seen it? Go this deep. The the last one I can really remember where it went like. This was Toronto when they fired Dave known as they took out a chunk of his scouting staff to. That was a big one. There were major changes and eventually it led to. Lula. Morello Kyle Dubious Anderson and Mike Babcock by I. Mean this one today in terms of seismic is it is maybe it's because there's just nothing much going on, but it seems worse. We're going to get to the timing here in a couple of seconds, but this is one at a at a lot of different levels for the Buffalo Sabres. What does this indicate to you given that and we'll get? Get there I swear because it still the news of the day given that they've gone with an inexperienced general manager, and this is Kevin Adams first job. Last year we saw out of the box higher with Ralph Krueger behind the bench What do we expect now we've seen departments gutted ranging cow's head of scouting gone. You mentioned Chris Taylor his staff as well in Rochester. What do we expect now? Boy, that's A. that's a great question I. Don't know if I really know the answer luck, let's go back to the beginning. Let's try to see where we are here, so don't when the pandemic came in buffalo made. They were really ripped for the way they handled the portfolios the way they handled the changes laying people off, and even some people came out of the woodwork Larry Quinn who was the former president. He was very critical of the changes that were made some of them the Knox family that founded. The organization one of the children of the parents, the Seymour northern that founded the team was critical like it was a big deal and Tim Graham from the athletic, didn't interview with Kim Gula, and wrote a story about it, and someone sent me a quote from one of the stories, and it's from Kimbe Dula, and it said we fully admit we put trust and some of the wrong people and made decisions based on information that was given to us by them. It's our fault. We put too much faith in certain people. We allowed them more leeway than clearly they deserved. And someone said to me you watch that quote. They are going to make changes in hockey now. One of the things about the gulags is. They've let go of people with term Tim. Murray was fired a year after getting an extension, and he's on the payroll to the end of June. Rex Ryan on the football side was a guy was fired with term left, and when Jason Botterill got a vote of confidence from Cuba Gula herself to the Associated Press three weeks ago now he had two years left on his deal I thought in most other people thought he'd get another year, but someone again warn me. ME. As the person who sent me that growth that said his leash short. They feel that quote unquote. Keep people have let them down and they are gonNA go outside of typical hockey. People they are eases. You Mark my words. They're going to do it. And Kevin Adams hiring to the business side of the organization was seen as that, and now you look at it. The four top hockey people are Kim and Teri Gula there Ralph Krueger, who certainly is A. A hockey pedigree, but not much in terms of the NHL and Kevin, Adams, who's worked for the family for ten years, although obviously, he was a player and a former first round draft. Pick and Stanley Cup champion and this person texted me this afternoon, and they said Look I. I know you're busy. I'm not going to call you, but this is what this is about that. They feel that the hockey people they've been told about haven't worked and they are going the. The exact opposite direction. Yes, these people may have some pedigree in the sport, but they're not NHL people, and that's what this is a boat from the pagodas he said would I be off base than if I suggested that this is a move that indicates further to the comment that they feel duped by people in and around the NHL, and now they are retreating inside a Gula bubble I think that's very fair like they said today, there was no search. We had Kevin in mind very recently only because we know him over nine years. he has handled very admirably. Any job with given him loyal communicative, and we just feel that it's it's a better place for us to be. With? His GM. Actually just to add to that thing, terry touchdown earlier that the other gems that we. Had hired are was here before. We. We interviewed them. You call around but until you get to the day to day, and sometimes it takes years right to understand a where their ad in in what common ground that you guys that you find together with an you know it's. It's been a long process not I. Mean yes, not in the GM role, but certainly as a person and I think this is why we think that you know this is a little bit different This is change from maybe how we normally are lot of other crops normally higher. GM's this was somebody that has been part of our organizations in multiple roles. And that we've you know we've. Come to to know and respect. I think that that makes a difference this time around. The made their surge? They got their coach last year and they've known Kevin Adams for a long time, and these are the people that are GonNa make their decisions They feel that they know them and they trust them now. The one thing that is unusual here is it's very clear. Something happened in the last three weeks because Kim. Gula when asked about quote, said it was our intent key role, but there were too many differences of opinion and Terry. Padilla said we felt that we were not being heard. Now I understand. There was a review an independent review of the organization Dine over the winter. And whatever those recommendations were I think Jason..

And this was during the famed marv Levy Jim Kelly era people were like people still revere they talk about it like he's a saint mark. Saint Marv also a fun little tidbit during the run of X. FILES. There was a throwaway line from the smoking. Man Who has seemed to have orchestrated everything from the Rodney King. Trial to the miracle on Ice Hockey match to the Oscars. He says quote what I don't want to see is the bills winning the Super Bowl as long as I'm alive that doesn't happen. Which is Great? Like there's like a little kind of through line that he for some reason and is not explained that he hates the buffalo bills. The sabers established in one thousand nine hundred ninety played in the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium Until Nineteen ninety-six when Marine Midland arena. Now key bank center opened the team plays in the Atlantic Division of the NHL and the team has won one presidents trophy and three Prince of Wales Trophies which are conference championships said President's trophies the highest points in a season yeah so that was two thousand six two thousand seven during their like real peak-time. I remember that that was your however. Unlike the bills the sabers do not have a league championship having lost the nineteen seventy five Stanley Cup to the Philadelphia Flyers and the nineteen ninety nine Stanley Cup to the Dallas Stars. I remember the ninety nine. Oh I wasn't alive for the other one but we yeah. The first one that they that they lost in that was right when they had the French connection. So I think those were that was like seventy two to seventy nine That was center as Ewbal Perot and left winger Rick Mark Ten or Rick Martin or Rick Martin. Maybe if your friend she's Martin and then right wing was Rennie rubare. Yes so and the seventies were again the buffalo neans revere it there's like the seventies sabres was a big deal. Yeah that was also Tim. Horton played for the sabres around that time. It wasn't very good no no. He's made a lasting impression. He died tragically and started a line of shots drugs when he ran his car. One single car crash but you know people seem to like as his awfully a Tim. Hortons is big around here just as an FYI. Everybody and every time the roll up the rim to win contests comes through. That's also like Mary Buffalo. How like with the McDonald's stuff they would have like a ups thing off the front of the label or like. Maybe there's a special sticker on the bottom of your cup. Nope this is. You have to finish drinking. You're up and then you take the little paper Rim of the Cup and you work hard to roll it up. It's baby there's a is it. Words is it a code is it. It's words and I've won several cups of coffee from the roll up to the RIM and exhibit. Very weird concept. Oh Yeah if you're not familiar with unrolling your own Paper Cup to win a prize. Yeah as far as I know. They're the only like fast food chain coffee chain. That question does this as like like that. Particular Rolling up the rim and it's always wet. Yes that's what I'm saying it's Weird. It's like you're not gonNA roll it up while you still have a full cup of. Coffee. Yeah so you have to continue drinking your Paper Cup of coffee. Yeah and then you roll up the rim so gross so since two thousand fourteen. Both the bills and the sabres have been owned by Terry PA- Gula who is a key. Investor in Buffalo's revitalization efforts and many buffalo neons including my father revere Pohjola as the only person keeping both franchises in Buffalo. Because every year when this when the season ends and the sabers did terribly or the bills did terribly or failed to win something or whatever. There's always a rumor that goes around. That's like that's it. They're moving the bills to Canada. That's what's happening. There's more money up there. They're going to do it or they're moving day on them. I don't know I don't know if Canada wants them. I mean there's plenty of bills fans in Canada. I mean they'd drive over the border all the time two games so I don't know I don't know how realistic it is. But there was a lot of times you hear people in bars. That are like yeah. They're leaving the next five years. There's no way to keep the bills here. It's a shame. The buffalo bandits were established in one thousand nine hundred and played their home games in Buffalo Memorial Auditorium Until Nineteen ninety-six when they follow the sabers to Marine Midland They have won eight division championships and four league championships. That was in ninety. Two Ninety three ninety six and two thousand eight. My uncle went to abandon its Championship game when they won. I think it was either the two thousand eight or nine hundred sixty one and he said the fans went in Sane. Yeah people were like running all over the city of Buffalo ripping their Finan cars hanging on light posts. Just losing it and he said he remembers watching. These people just celebrate like crazy people and he was like this is for Lacrosse. I can't imagine if the bills when the super bowl the city of buffalo would burned to the ground just in in sheer joy. Because it's been so long so let's talk about the Buffalo Braves. They don't exist anymore okay. the Buffalo Braves played in the NBA from nineteen? Seventy nine hundred. Spaghetti sauce and frank s theresa to do something with them either way. It's deep fried chicken wings tossed in a vinegar based Cayenne pepper hot sauce and melted butter and.

"Most of it is is because during the time when a lot of other rust belt. Cities are cities. In general were tearing down older architecture. Buffalo was so poor. They couldn't afford to do it. So that's why so many like turn of the century architect. Beautiful examples of architecture are still standing. They were abandoned for a long time but now more recently like in the past ten to twenty years there have been like a big. There's been a big movement toward Re like rest store in restoring a bunch of these buildings so it's really cool and there's like a national architecture association and they come to buffalo every year because of so many great. Oh that's buildings that are still around So at the end of the nineteenth century the guarantee building which was constructed by Louis Sullivan. Who was the mentor of our boy? Frank Lloyd Wright He was a prominent. It was a prominent example of an early high rise skyscraper so it was like one of the first skyscrapers. I also when I was an intern at the Darwin. D Martin House which. I'm going to mention in in like one second. I wrote the tour for the guarantee building because they were gonna they had just restored it and they were planning on doing like a like a little historical tour of the building even though it was still like being used for offices and that kind of thing. I don't know if they ever used it they probably. They're like thank you and then they probably threw it away. The Darwin D Martin House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built nineteen o three and nineteen of five. It's considered to be one of the most important projects from Frank. Lloyd Wright's Prairie School era and he referred to it as his magnum opus and he kept the elevation drawing of it above his desk for the rest of his life. That is a cool. If you're ever in buffalo go the Darwin D Martin House. It's actually complex of five buildings and you get a tour of it and it's like back to its original like even the furniture and everything they restored all of the stained glass that was created for it And it's just like a really cool space and also it's in parkside which is a really beautiful neighborhood designed by Frederick Law Olmsted And there's good restaurants around there and things so yeah go to Germany Martin House. Also the Larkin Administration building was Frank Lloyd Wright's First Commercial Commission which was downtown Buffalo. Darwin D Martin actually hired him to create it because he worked for the Larkin Soap Company. But it was demolished in the nineteen sixties So now it's called Larkin Square and it's a kind of community space. They host a lot of food truck. Rodeo type things there. The Twentieth Century saw works such as the art deco style. Buffalo City Hall is mentioned before and Buffalo Central Terminal. I spent abandoned But it's very beautiful electric tower which is very beautiful. The Richardson olmsted complex. So the Richardson H H. Richardson said complex is a complex in north. Just north of the city on elmwood avenue it was built to be a psych ward and it is now a hotel room center. At least part of it is because it's several buildings. I have a terrible story from my mother about the H H. Richardson Alex so I actually called her. They're on their way to Florida and I called her. I was like can I tell the story on the podcast? She was like yes. If you get the the mess it up to get the story straight so when my mother was working in at three east at the hospital she had a patient who was going in for pre up and the patient said to my mom. Now it's in my chart and everything that I cannot be alone okay. You cannot leave me alone. I needed to have someone with me when I come out of the the operation. I need someone to sit with me like I cannot be alone because I have some. I have severe anxiety issues and so my mom was like. Don't worry I'll we'll make sure that someone is with you no matter what if it's not me it's going to be somebody else but can I ask you what's what's wrong. Why do you need that? So apparently about five or six years prior to that. This woman was working on a project for radon testing at the H H. Richardson Complex. And this was when it was abandoned. It wasn't around so she was working with another guy her partner and they were doing radon testing in the basement and he was like all right. I'm going to get going. Do you mind and she was like. Oh Yeah I'm coming to. I'm right behind you. I just need to get whatever this thing. So he goes up the stairs to the top. And apparently there's like a little hang tag thing over the door that says like someone's in here. He forgot to put the hang tag up because he thought she was like literally right behind him. He leaves goes away. The hang tag thing has gone the security guards who were like there to like lock up and everything didn't see the hang tag locker in there and shut off the lights and this is a Friday so she on horses on a Friday so she she said it was so dark. She couldn't see your hand in front of her face. She was in like the full gear. Yeah the protective gear suit. And she said that they used to keep like the especially bad psych patients in the basement they would keep them chained to the wall and they would put on the floor and she said while she was in there she she would just curled up near the door and like banged on the door and screamed and yelled made as much noise as she possibly could. But there's no one around that complex. She was there all weekend. Oh she said she heard the chain scraping along the floor. She heard hey moving. She said she was never the same again. She didn't have no cell. Cell Service was like two thousand five. She didn't have any family. She lives alone. She had no family in the area and she was there all weekend and she said there's something that she was like. I was never somebody who believed in ghosts or anything like that. But after that she was like it changed my life forever so she was locked. It a line abandoned sake word in the basement in the basement for seventy two hours for seventy two hours with no food. No no lights. Nothing is that not the most horrifying thing you've ever heard so I'm telling you the story because I had heard it before. Yeah years ago but I wanted to get the story straight. I'm listening to them on the phone. Almost like she was like that has stayed with me my whole life. It is like that's such a terrible story. Pause my dad goes I believe I don't believe it. That's all I was like. Of course you don't know about you. I'm telling a story on the PODCAST. So now that the H H Richardson Complex is now Hotel Hotel. In which you can voluntarily stay for seventy two hours. You couldn't pay me enough. You couldn't pay anyb- I guarantee like locals. Local Buffalo Indians are like absolutely absolutely not absolutely not because they used to there was like like rogue like Ghost hunters urban explorers and things. That would go in there all the time and take pictures and stuff. Actually there are a lot of really beautiful pictures of it yet. It was abandoned like there are still wheelchairs in the hallway and like beds and sheets on the bed. Yeah pillows and stuff. It's crazy but it's a very beautiful complex Very beautiful super haunted super haunted. So do not stay there anyway. Back up beautiful architecture. Urban Renewal from the fifty s and seventy s gave way to the construction of the brutal style Buffalo City Court building and one Seneca Tower which is formerly the HSBC center. The city's tallest building my work in that when he was a banker. Your Dad was a banker. Oh my dad was a banker in the late seventies banker before he was a firefighter. Yeah Yeah I can't picture your get wanted to be on purpose. Oh I know he wanted to be a CPA. He went to school to be a CPA. This is brand new and I know that's why he does all their taxes anyway. Yeah he was a banker free chesapeake but it didn't pay well enough and then mom and dad got married and then mom got pregnant with me and he had to make more money so he went to the Nafta Niagara Frontier Transit Authority. Just way all right. Let's talk about the snow. Let's I mean time about the snow. Yeah if okay flu people that deliver New York State. I didn't live in New York for many years and then when I moved to Rochester for my job. I didn't know anything about Rochester other than its nose a lot and I was right. Yup and I remember reading about the Golden Stonewall a word Yep Golden Snowball Award and so basically like my whole impression of of Buffalo Rochester. Syracuse was just. It's knows a lot. Yeah so you're not wrong. Buffalo has a reputation. For being the snowy right but Rochester's consistently the snow your city in the US from winter to winter with Syracuse. Not far behind. It's really obnoxious. I didn't know that stat. Oh yeah well I'll tell you why in a second so however when the circumstances are right which happens every so often. Buffalo gets absolutely so yeah socked in a major way and it's called Lake effect which is a phrase that strikes fear in the hearts of western New Yorkers all over the country effect so what happens is lake effect just as an. Fyi Cold Air comes down from Canada and it rushes across the lakes and what happens is if the lake is not frozen the cold air picks up all of this moisture from the lake and then dumps it boom right as close to wherever it is possible once it gets like full of moisture so if the circumstances are right where the air is dry enough and the way the lake is warm enough it will pick up a lot of moisture dump it boom immediately right on the shore which is Buffalo. There was It was probably about three or four years ago right before Thanksgiving That like people you know could tweet about it and stuff. They were taking pictures from skyscrapers in Buffalo of the impending snow up like that was called November. Yeah and I have a whole out. I didn't mean to jump at no. No please. We'll talk about it. So the reason why Rochester and Syracuse. Get more snow than buffalo is because different. Lake different lakes so the air comes across. Lake Erie is at the West and Lake Ontario the north so they're like the New York state that that like L. Part of New York state is like between those two lakes so when the cold air rushes across it picks up not only from Lake Erie but also Lake Ontario and it dumps it at the meeting point of that which tends to be Rochester Syracuse. It's it's like when they founded this place they must have came in May. Oh yeah they were like. This is a beautiful Liz. It's beautiful never leaving and then I don't know what happened later. But Yep exactly so. That is what happens most often. But you will hear. This is a phrase that you will only here in.

Show would escort you back to back on a boat so in eighteen sixty many railway companies in lines cross through and terminated in Buffalo in major ones were the Buffalo Bradford and Pittsburgh Railroad Buffalo in Erie Railroad and the New York Central Railroad and during time buffalo neons controlled a quarter of all shipping traffic on Lake Erie and shipbuilding was a thriving industry for the city At The dawn of the twentieth century. Local mills were among the first to benefit from hydro electric power generated by the Niagara River which made buffalo the first American city to have widespread electric lighting allow yielding it the nickname the city of light. Which is also the title of a book by Lauren Belfer About Buffalo during the early twentieth century. It's very good. I highly recommend and it was also part of the automobile revolution hosting the brass era car. Builder Pierce Arrow early in the twentieth century. Electricity was used to dramatic effect at the Pan American Exposition in nineteen o one which buffalo however that particular expo was best known for being the site of President William McKinley assassination on September sixth. He was shot twice in the belly. An anarchist Leon jogos at the Temple of Music on September sixth. The president died eight days later on September fourteenth from gangrene caused by the bullet wounds a rough way to go. What's even worse is the newly developed x Ray Machine was displayed at the fair but doctors were reluctant to use it on McKinley to search for the bullets because they did not know what side effects it might have on him. Also the operating room. The exposition's emergency hospital did not have any electric lighting. Even though the exteriors of many of the buildings were covered with thousands of light bulbs. And if that's not a metaphor for the city I don't know what it is and also like the best doctor in the city wasn't there like Niagara Falls or something. Yeah exactly. Doctors used a pan to reflect sunlight onto the operating table as they treated mckinlay's wounds. That's how the whole thing like you're like a Roman. Yeah like like. It's the Dark Ages for heaven's sake. So when McKinley died Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in at the Wilcox Mansion on September Fourteenth. Which is now the. Theodore Roosevelt inaugural national historic site and Museum. Which is a great museum about the Panamerican Expo and the assassination slash inauguration so yeah Theodore Roosevelt became one of the few presidents to be sworn in outside of Washington. Dc let's move onto the Great Depression shall we the Great Depression as with many other cities in the US saw severe unemployment especially among working class. Men The new deal relief programs operated in full force in Buffalo and the city became a stronghold of labor unions and the Democratic Party Buffalo City Hall in our Deco masterpiece was dedicated on July. First Nineteen thirty two. It's a very beautiful building. A very iconic piece of the Buffalo Skyline during World War Two buffalo saw the return of prosperity and full employment due to its position as manufacturing center as one of the most populous cities of the nineteen fifties buffalo's economy revolved almost entirely on. Its manufacturing base and major companies such as republic steel in Lackawanna Steel employed tens of thousands of Buffalo neons however. The city's importance declined in the later. Half the twentieth century for several reasons perhaps the most devastating being the opening of the Saint Lawrence seaway in nineteen fifty seven goods which had previously passed through buffalo could now bypass it using a series of canals and locks reaching the ocean via the Saint Lawrence River and another major toll was suburban migration which was a national trend at the time. People are moving out of the city into the suburbs Race riots rocked the city in nineteen sixty seven and the city which boasted over half a million people at its peak had seen its population declined by some fifty percent as industries. Shut down and people left the rust belt for the employment opportunities of the South and West and Erie County has lost population in every census year. Since one thousand nine hundred seventy yeah. It's good yeah. She's buffalo is truly a rust belt city. So let's.

The haudenosaunee territories are all across western New York Eastern Canada and throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio There is a large Tuscaroras. Haudenosaunee Seneca Cayuga all. There's still a very vibrant cultural representation in this area. The Seneca people own the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls There are quite a few Seneca people in the Rochester area They're gone again in the Rochester area. Which is a historical museum and also they have like a fully built longhouse in the language that just opened recently. And it's a very beautiful museum. So as far as Europeans go. County was by the French at the mouth of Buffalo Creek in seventeen fifty eight. It's buildings were destroyed. A year later by the evacuating French. It's it's a common landscape that coming up the sky yeah freeway. I laughed because you said you know when the burden like a year later like everything seems to be like if they did this and it was great and then broken down and then the bridge came in and they burned everything down and then the Canadians came in and they burned everything down. Yeah so this Is kind of a through line in history of Buffalo? Oh we'll get to that. As the Anti Slavery Movement grew in the US buffalo emerged as a gathering place for abolitionists and in eighteen.
