Should the Bruins Be Concerned About Their Current Third Line?
"Fairly obvious one has to be that third line, right? I mean, that's the line that where you've got your top six clicking very well right. Now, you got them drawing a lot of these matchups, Ideally you would think that a third line where you have coil in the middle that you guys that were top six guys prior to this that have a top-six talent and Nick rejected price. You saw them further down the line up against easier matchups. You'd imagine the goals would come right or you would at least get more consistent production where they're afforded those those easier looks and so far that really hasn't happened now granted this been they've had some chances right? I think the rules in seven shots on goal during Tuesday's win over Buffalo, especially last week. They had a couple of really good grade eight looks and just did not pan out. So there's been chances but it also it's been kind of choice between right. They're getting a whole ton of offensive zone time and not having much to show for it in terms of tangible production. So that's the line. I think you definitely need to get wrong. I mean we've we've talked about this for years now right of you know, how good this lineup can be when you've got that third line really clicking as you saw on the 2019 postseason, so they have to wear may be shuffling those guys up or just sticking with and hoping they break through they gotta correct that and then the other one I'd say just fixing on top power-play unit which

Taylor Hall Shows Flashes in his First Game With the Bruins
"Did you think of Taylor Hall? Yeah, I think if you're a few of the problems you have to be encouraged as what you saw home. It's kind of interesting after the game. He saw a few like National people kind of reactive like I guess I forget who was if someone up in Canada that was like, well you saw from a game the Bruins have the works out for them with Kayla Hall like guys not confident really going to build his confidence back up which I mean he's he's admitted that but he needs to build his game back up, but I don't know how he saw anything from it off. They give you like a red flag of like all this guy's really fighting the puck. I mean, it's his first game with the new team hasn't played in ten days. People forget about the guy was literally was on the it was held out of games wage earning a new system. So, you know, I don't know people are expecting him to to score a hat-trick in his first game, but you know, I think he started off a little slow. I think he had to kind of adjust the new life mate said like kind of a bad turn over that kind of that spin around pass it went to a sabre instead of a brewing so like yes a little tentative at at this. But I think it's a game went on he got more comfortable. I think where you really kind of noticed him especially was transition wise very very kind of assertive and smooth to the neutral zone. Got a lot of an easy. Everybody was able to manufacture a lot of pretty clean Zone entries, which is usually been an issue for this team terms of kind of getting that momentum back. So I think especially moving phone number Against maybe more physical teams like the Islanders or the capitals where they really trying to, you know, have you in your Zone? Haven't got like Hall who can't support a guy like McAvoy or a Grizzly look and get the puck-moving. I think it'd be a big a big difference maker in terms of helping out that group. So I think if you're the Bruins as the the first step I think of to be encouraged it wasn't, you know, I don't get the month of drawbacks and people saying that you know, he he look like he was you know out of it or or anything like that like he was shooting off the rust seemed like he was fitting pretty well with Craig Smith and Dave G granted like Craig Smith might be scoring on a newline you put them on right now you guys just on fire so which is good news for the Bruins, right that gives them an actual finish on that line, but I think it's be encouraging. I think maybe that one thing people were concerned about, you know, there's the The Narrative about until hell not playing winning lucky or being a dog because he was on some bootleg teams, but I think his attention to details as the game went on we're pretty good. I mean That could that checking effort to really break up that last chance Buffalo hat and over time, you know, he was engaged on the other end of the ice or the thing is encouraging. So I think for a first step really know how you have to be discouraged by what you saw because the chances were there, right? He wasn't burying them. He supposed to work on a little bit but as a first kind of audition seemed like he did pretty well in that second line.

COVID-19 outbreak pauses Vancouver Canucks' season
"Elliott firstly before we do anything on this podcast. Let's just all send our best to everyone in the vancouver canucks organization. Everybody around the nhl feels awful at what the vancouver canucks are going through right now and elliott as we tape this podcast record this podcast On a sunday evening. What is the very latest with this ongoing situation. Well look the covert list expanded again. On sunday night sixteen players listed on it. And you know we should mention that just because you're on it doesn't mean you have it but one of the things that the nhl has basically assumed here is that it's going to go through everyone and even if it doesn't and you hope it doesn't you automatically assume it does and that's the way they look at it when it was going through dallas. That's the way they looked at it. When was going through buffalo. And you know there's been some debate about white symptoms. That players did or didn't have. I'm not getting into that. I think that's crazy. I think that what we have here is that we know it's the variant The brazilian variant. We know there's a player jas horlock who had covert originally last march and now has it again. So there's a lot of things to be concerned about here. We know that not everybody had symptoms. We know that some had symptoms more severe than others and that the ones who did have the severe symptoms. Unfortunately they went through an awful lot. Like basically what i've heard. Is that the roughest outbreak in terms. Of what the players went through generally considered to be buffalo's i think for those players who did have symptoms. This one has been considered rougher than that

In an incredibly short time, the carcass was skinned the meat distributed among the Indians and the head and the robe packed away for presentation. And so the buffalo were moved north by rail to Edmonton. Then to wainwright southeast to the Albert capital. That original seven, hundred odd head grew exponentially. This time the public wasn't prepared to stomach Buffalo Management Program. Polite language for a massive slaughter. Heard it onto cattle cars, and sent north via Edmonton to a place called waterways. They're the buffalo were detained and crammed onto barges and hauled up the ATHABASCA and slave rivers. Marion Lynn Herron pick up the story. And when Ned they brought the prairie buffalo in, and this is when grandma was. I remember she used to talk about it and she'd be so upset about how they brought these animals in the. Barge and how they were just rubbing their rumps. You know would be she said, there was no hair left on their rumps to his right down the bearskin from the heat and she said. Lack of water on the barges were maybe they. Didn't realize that the how much water they needed. That would have been possible and she said as soon as they were loaded and she said, that's the first thing they hit for was a water. No once they got there drank they were gone in the Bush and this is how the Prairie Buffalo's ended up in this. Would Buffalo Park? "WILL CORONA VIRUS? I don't know what what will discuss about that. But Yeah, plan. Buffalo Bills to one the Las Vegas Raiders are and. The. New. England. Post. Game podcast. I'll say it again. Gunman these two games. I'm not getting emotional just go tickle. Got To win one these next two games. What it is buffalo home. Kansas City on the road. Because, you don't want to go from two to three, and then you're sitting at the by going. Okay. What are we? What are those two Yuen's or you know? Can we hang with the big boys? Because that's what the NFL seasons about hanging with the big boys. This is no more. Let's go from seven, four, twelve to seven and nine B. s no. This get to the playoffs. This is have five first round picks in the last two years. This is spending more money and really ever having the last couple years of free agency. This is getting. Over the Hump. So. This is about being a big boy and these are two big boy games. Against two big. Offences including the biggest boy offense I mean Kansas, city my goodness. Daniel Jeremiah yesterday. Say that you know only defenses that can have a constant four-man rush can hang with Kansas. City at least try to hang. That's why the charges have. You don't compete against him. Orders less two weeks to get a four man rush. I'd like to see a consistent one man i. So again. Well, the season be over at two and three now. But It's not great especially after start it's Kinda like. When you're six and four. and. Then use five of the last six. Seven nine really that's something to feel good about no, it's not. So. I remember the raiders have a tough schedule I eleven games. And it eases up a lot. Waiting? The. season. So. If you start to know, I, want to be three into these winds. Obviously. Try to get them both. But yeah, I mean there you go. You do that. bad injury news today Damon. Are Net possibly. Out For about six weeks weaver aggravation of a thumb fracture. Wasn't playing great but you want your number nineteen overall pick on the field. And you want him to grow and you know he has a chance to be great. So, now, we never lost an applauded be starting. Give, Isaiah Johnson a try. I know you don't have room for Meek Robertson right now because he's a slot guy but I'd like to see him active mon was graded goodbye PF this week. I'm not a guy I take if if grades with a grain of salt and that's no disrespect i. I just. I just look at each grade will individually. And the more. I like they're broken tackle. Rates for running back because that's obvious. That's. Not a subjective. So I'm not saying, Molin, had a bad game I'm just saying I. You know I don't live and die by. PF grades maybe because I'm older maybe it's because I remember the golden age of football I don't know. But. Yeah. Our Nets bit worry. Groom said yesterday he's worried about rugs and Edwards. Both have leg injuries. Hoping that. Brow. Nick will be back. And to see you know I mean the rarest banged up but I want to hear excuses because. A lot of teams are banged up look as Cisco Look Denver and the chargers charges every chirs five defensive starters out. So yeah, it sucks. But it's sucks other places to go out and win try to win. So I don't want to spend too much time on this. But it's in the news and this what we do this podcast. Darren Waller had a fundraiser in the Las Vegas area. Monday. And there's pitchers and things a lot of raiders. Couldn't car couldn't Renfro. I couldn't tell if Witton had a massive ruin nobody really did. Moreau anyways. When I saw these visuals Monday night I'm Mike My one of these and get dinged and sure enough restoring the Las Vegas. Paper. Owner Mark? Davis. Isn't happy about it. the NFL may look into the paper said the possible finder suspensions. I know the NFL is taking this serious and I know what's going on Tennessee Minnesota this week. So they're not gonna be happy to see. A group of. Players and I don't know why am coughing all of a sudden. Grouper. NFL players. Kind of. Breaking the mask rules. Because NFL had guidelines. Can they expect these guys to live that way? You know off the field. So we'll see we'll see I. don't know if it's GONNA be a big deal with that I would probably say no but it's something right it's something. And it's always something it's always opie. I go to work every day. Saying, I, know today's going to be busy because it is. It's always stuff. It's great. You C. Calhoun for her third round pick of the raiders. Make to play against him that you see. On field last night second round pick for playing for. The. Ravens see all these foreigner high picks. Actually from like the Ridge era. And they're playing. Elsewhere And pointing good teams. MAKES YOU WONDER ABOUT COACHING? More. So within these guys more so about del Rio. Because I think when Gruden got with these, you know. Most of the del Rio guys he was here. He had his mindset that he's moving on. And that's why he could be an obedient workout elsewhere either. But just makes you wonder. You know the guys getting enough coaching. South thing you know like Derek Carr needs to be perfect. Every nieces conditions to be perfect. For him to succeed conditions meaning. Blocking and healthy receivers and all that. And you know maybe he was compared to Alex Smith you know that Hey, he's going to complete a lot of passes. Knocking throughout interceptions, but it's not gonNA GONNA leave a lot of yards on the field as well because not gonNA, take chances. I don't know maybe. I'm always. You know that's what happens when you lose everybody's great about Derek Carr to two games not so much after law. So it's only jerk you know my. My opinion. Stands. That if he does a good job in total this year, he'll be the quarterback next year in Vegas if not, he won't be. and. It's been mostly good after three games. But you know that's what people do they. Make. Proclamations early. Monitoring Harper undrafted free agent cornerback. On the practice squad. Signed by the New York giants so He's no longer a raider. Earl Thomas is still out there. He's not going to Houston. It looks like. I don't know I. I still know he's the answer ever we don't. The Vegas Area I don't know stay with local but allegiance stadium is going to be able to be up ten. percent. Capacity. So that means that events. Sixty five hundred people couldn't attend. At summit fell stadiums they're doing that but the paper reported don't expect Mark Davis because said all or nothing he doesn't want a small crowd there. So Michigan always change his mind. But I don't know I wouldn't expect it. But you know who knows looks like he's going to try to play there this fall with fans. Are The raiders have been better against tight end. This year small small-size sample size. Really. Haven't played A. Great tight end. Jerry Cook against he's okay. Good. That tests will we'll see how it Travis Kelsey maybe little plane. Good. You know in coverage he hasn't been good. Overall Collins hasn't been good overall Jon Gruden. Say He talked gave Him Pep Talk to Colin gestured and he will be better. We has to be all these guys on defense the better. Farrell even makes crosby Mexico's me has to have Saxon three games, which is great. Balance Even more consistent. You know to see he beat him be more consistent, but he's good. Don't get me wrong. But I want to see more plays once more little tin. I WANNA see more plays by Joyner WANNA see more plays from everybody. You know. Apron have a great game against especially in the run he had interception, but he made some bad ingles and he was a little over aggressive not worried about that. It's a coaching lesson. It's learning lesson. He's only played four freaking games. That we forget about that. For. So he's GonNa. I think he's going to be a really good player. He had a tough game. But that doesn't mean that he's going to be a bad run stopper. I don't necessarily believe that at all. I, really don't. You know we talked about free agents. Trent Brown Terrell Williams. Joyner. Littleton? Collins. By forgetting a few people. These guys are really Landed it up or.

"Chris Taylor. On an extension for him. because. They were really happy with the job he did there. They were working. Like I think that there's other coaches there who have either some. I don't know if they're extensions or options. There are working on those like an agent told me that they were working on contracts for some of their H. L. Guys, even some of their NHL guys because they have time then this morning, all of a sudden. They're like it's over like until this morning Jason. Botterill was going at about like he had the job so I would say the. The answer, your question is probably yes. Jeff but I don't know that sure. How would you characterize the last three years? The Buffalo sabres under the bottle I mean I don't I. Don't know that three years really is enough to evaluate a general manager to be honest, but that's all we have. How are you going to look back at what we just saw in these last three years from bottle? I think the answer is incomplete. Again like I said some of the things that they did. Was! Directed at them from ownership, but other things you've got to take the heat for, and honestly we're probably not gonNA. Know for another three years. If bottle did a good job or not, I mean look the. And when you win in this business, that's what happens. But to be honest, I don't look at it and say I really feel we have a full. Fare picture of what he did, do you? Know. I think. I made this point a couple of different times on the podcast this season. This is a team that I would characterize as in reflection. They're trying to figure out what they have in Casey Mental Stat. Can he be a number to center behind Jackal? I? Don't know They're trying to figure out what they have in taste, Thomson, can he be an NHL? Player part of the Rhino. Rally trade we. We don't know we know about Jack Michael. He was there of course previous Jason, botterill but we know that Rosina's. Darlene is going to be an excellent defense for a long time. in the NHL. We suspect think Yoko Harju for new land. Deal could turn out to be really good for them. I think it already has no I. Think we set it at the minute was done. This looks like a win. For the for the Buffalo Sabres but I'll I'll look at Buffalo, and you made this point earlier on this season, and maybe even last season on the podcast as well. What's the first thing that Joel Quenneville always asks before he takes a new head coaching job. WHO's a goalie? and. That's the one thing that buffalo never had. I liked Carter Hutton a lot. I liked Carter. Hutton I like Lena's ullmark. I'm GonNa really like Logan who goaltender of the future there, but they don't have the goalie, and when you're a team that's in reflection. When you're a building team man, a good goaltender can erase a lot of mistakes and extend people's careers to me. This is going to be once again. The lesson of shore up your goal tending I before anything else. Well you know Carter Hutton. It's interesting. He didn't landless Hausky. Did an article recently were hot and talked about I guess some semi surgery had done You know I hope it works out for them because I, like it. I liked Carter Hutton a lot too great story. Great Story, but. I. Don't know it so weird to me because I thought I thought it was going to be another year for him and it just. Like I, want the Sabers Duale because I think their fans deserve it, you're you should be rewarded for being that. Good a fan base once in a while right and if you're sabres fans, you're sitting here today and you're going. Why are we so invested in this and it's not good. What do you think happens with the roster now? Again this is a rookie general manager. We don't know much about how atoms is going to work in this capacity other than it's going to be in conjunction with the pagodas you've talked plenty about managing upwards. more than were, and how important that is for general manager today's NHL. If you're a member of the Buffalo Sabres a player, I mean how you feeling right now. You're thinking you're going again. Now the one thing is I like I think the players like Gruber. I think they do. Jack certainly does Jack Legal certainly does Krueger said today? I'm the coach I think he was wondering. If you know we were all GonNa, 'cause we've talked about how the word was. His influence was growing. And he said. Signed on here as the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres and I'm very proud to continue. There's a lot of emotions attached with the decisions that were made today, but all that matters now is the actions that we take moving forward, and my actions will continue to be as the head coach. Kevin already mentioned it. Our relationship developed extremely organically. But I have to think his opinions going to matter here, so the players probably look at that and say okay, but I think that there's gotta be a certain amount of this again. This again, the story continues. There is no savior coming right now. no one on the horizon that's going to turn the buffalo sabres fortunes around which is why it'll be fascinating to watch the off season whenever that happens to see what Kevin Adams new general manager. The Buffalo Sabres does Taro. Suture Modo. Where are you now for joining us on another edition of thirty one thoughts the podcast?.

"Pushed against them I think that some of those decisions may have been the ones we saw today changes in some of their coaching and scouting staff and their assistant general managers I think he pushed against them, but also I believe that whatever bottles plan wise in terms of pushing forward with the team in the budget. They didn't agree with it either, and that's kind of where we are, and you know the one thing I will say this laudable saying that the goals are losing a fortune, and they're making the changes because they're running out of money or whatever. Look if you look at their stock price, they're getting hammered. There's no question about it. But what someone said to me is everywhere in sports is about to make these changes that owners are getting hammered just like every business owner out there is getting hammered by the Corona Virus says contracts or abode to change an hockey and every sport. There's going to be less term. There's going to be pandemic wording in these contracts and in the states. You'll know more what this is in Canada. You're going to become an at will employee, which is going to make it easier for them to terminate you and also maybe for you to get out of a contract to. The getting hammered for their finances here, this person said to me and this is a different person when I was. referencing earlier more NHL teams that he wouldn't be surprised that New Jersey which is about to do, some hiring also looks at it this way to a leaner staff with more favourable contract, wording the ownership. Okay you started that answer off talking about something happening in the three weeks since Kim Gula said. Bottles are guy were coming back with with Jason Botterill Can I. Put forward suggestion. Sure that something was jackal. And that's something was a quote by Jaco on his exit, saying he's frustrated. And if you read between the lines, you can tell, but he's an elite level player He's watching Connor Magee peer-group same draft Gordon. The playoffs collect individual trophies, etc, and he's going back. Home in the spring was Jack. The something that happened in the three weeks. You know I think it's impossible not to hear what he's saying, but again I think that people have heard Eichel say this before. It's not like it's a secret, you know. The one thing is remember year ago when Edmonds and had another change. You know people said to me Connor mcdavid. Is he ever going to ask for trade? And you know I, said Radio Edmonds and last year that I thought the oilers had two years to sort this out. And, then they had to worry that maybe mcdavid would get fed up. I don't know how much time buffalo has. They're like now year later. Connor mcdavid feels completely different the oilers. Look like a much better team and I'm sure that he's much happier now. Because that's all he wants to do is win. I really think that the sabers do have to be looking at this and wondering. I don't know that I. Don't I'm not saying jackals gone to them and said I wanna be traded, but you have to be worried about the possibility of it. and. The one thing here, too, and you cannot blame a roll like the contract is going to turn out to be a great deal for the Sabers I. Think the skinner one. That's a much bigger question. I don't think Jason. Wanted to give Jack Eichel that contract and ownership said we're doing it and I don't think that Jason. botterill wanted to give jeff skinner. That deal I think what bottle wanted to do was offer big money for a low term Jason from what I heard is not a term guy. He says, too. Many teams get burned by those mistakes and I. Think he was overruled but I think what they're looking at right here is. There's a finite amount of time here before I says I've had enough, and I do think that is on the mind of the sabers organization. So then do we see the Buffalo? Sabres behave as if this is the first few weeks of Terry Pergola buying the Buffalo sabres which is go by me free agents. We need to audition for Jack here we need to. To Show Jack Eichel There were serious and committed to making the playoffs..

"Welcome one the PODCAST, just a quick shift edition hear the news of the day while it began early, and it was the dismissal of Jason Botterill. As general manager of the Buffalo Sabres, Kevin. Adams takes over, but then Elliott. After the press conference with Kim, Gula Terry Pergola and the new general manager, more dominoes fell as we record this podcast six, zero, three eastern on a Tuesday night. What is the very latest well? The very latest is that in addition to what you mentioned they did were Jason Botterill was? Let go and Assistance Randy. Sexton Steve Greeley the let go of Chris Taylor who was the head coach of their. Their American hockey, League team in Rochester team done really well the past couple of years and his staff and also let go was Ryan Jankowski, the director of Amateur Scouting, and what I'm told a good chunk of their scouting department, so I think we're still trying to figure out. Where is all going to land? But this is a massive massive bloodletting of the Buffalo Sabres. Give us some context here for maybe perhaps new hockey fans that haven't seen something like this. This is not just the NHL team. This goes deeper and this goes into different departments How many times if ever have you seen it? Go this deep. The the last one I can really remember where it went like. This was Toronto when they fired Dave known as they took out a chunk of his scouting staff to. That was a big one. There were major changes and eventually it led to. Lula. Morello Kyle Dubious Anderson and Mike Babcock by I. Mean this one today in terms of seismic is it is maybe it's because there's just nothing much going on, but it seems worse. We're going to get to the timing here in a couple of seconds, but this is one at a at a lot of different levels for the Buffalo Sabres. What does this indicate to you given that and we'll get? Get there I swear because it still the news of the day given that they've gone with an inexperienced general manager, and this is Kevin Adams first job. Last year we saw out of the box higher with Ralph Krueger behind the bench What do we expect now we've seen departments gutted ranging cow's head of scouting gone. You mentioned Chris Taylor his staff as well in Rochester. What do we expect now? Boy, that's A. that's a great question I. Don't know if I really know the answer luck, let's go back to the beginning. Let's try to see where we are here, so don't when the pandemic came in buffalo made. They were really ripped for the way they handled the portfolios the way they handled the changes laying people off, and even some people came out of the woodwork Larry Quinn who was the former president. He was very critical of the changes that were made some of them the Knox family that founded. The organization one of the children of the parents, the Seymour northern that founded the team was critical like it was a big deal and Tim Graham from the athletic, didn't interview with Kim Gula, and wrote a story about it, and someone sent me a quote from one of the stories, and it's from Kimbe Dula, and it said we fully admit we put trust and some of the wrong people and made decisions based on information that was given to us by them. It's our fault. We put too much faith in certain people. We allowed them more leeway than clearly they deserved. And someone said to me you watch that quote. They are going to make changes in hockey now. One of the things about the gulags is. They've let go of people with term Tim. Murray was fired a year after getting an extension, and he's on the payroll to the end of June. Rex Ryan on the football side was a guy was fired with term left, and when Jason Botterill got a vote of confidence from Cuba Gula herself to the Associated Press three weeks ago now he had two years left on his deal I thought in most other people thought he'd get another year, but someone again warn me. ME. As the person who sent me that growth that said his leash short. They feel that quote unquote. Keep people have let them down and they are gonNA go outside of typical hockey. People they are eases. You Mark my words. They're going to do it. And Kevin Adams hiring to the business side of the organization was seen as that, and now you look at it. The four top hockey people are Kim and Teri Gula there Ralph Krueger, who certainly is A. A hockey pedigree, but not much in terms of the NHL and Kevin, Adams, who's worked for the family for ten years, although obviously, he was a player and a former first round draft. Pick and Stanley Cup champion and this person texted me this afternoon, and they said Look I. I know you're busy. I'm not going to call you, but this is what this is about that. They feel that the hockey people they've been told about haven't worked and they are going the. The exact opposite direction. Yes, these people may have some pedigree in the sport, but they're not NHL people, and that's what this is a boat from the pagodas he said would I be off base than if I suggested that this is a move that indicates further to the comment that they feel duped by people in and around the NHL, and now they are retreating inside a Gula bubble I think that's very fair like they said today, there was no search. We had Kevin in mind very recently only because we know him over nine years. he has handled very admirably. Any job with given him loyal communicative, and we just feel that it's it's a better place for us to be. With? His GM. Actually just to add to that thing, terry touchdown earlier that the other gems that we. Had hired are was here before. We. We interviewed them. You call around but until you get to the day to day, and sometimes it takes years right to understand a where their ad in in what common ground that you guys that you find together with an you know it's. It's been a long process not I. Mean yes, not in the GM role, but certainly as a person and I think this is why we think that you know this is a little bit different This is change from maybe how we normally are lot of other crops normally higher. GM's this was somebody that has been part of our organizations in multiple roles. And that we've you know we've. Come to to know and respect. I think that that makes a difference this time around. The made their surge? They got their coach last year and they've known Kevin Adams for a long time, and these are the people that are GonNa make their decisions They feel that they know them and they trust them now. The one thing that is unusual here is it's very clear. Something happened in the last three weeks because Kim. Gula when asked about quote, said it was our intent key role, but there were too many differences of opinion and Terry. Padilla said we felt that we were not being heard. Now I understand. There was a review an independent review of the organization Dine over the winter. And whatever those recommendations were I think Jason..

"In for Law Super Bowls Super Bowl twenty five super bowl. Twenty six twenty seven and twenty eight to date. They have the record for the most consecutive Super Bowl appearances. And this was during the famed marv Levy Jim Kelly era people were like people still revere they talk about it like he's a saint mark. Saint Marv also a fun little tidbit during the run of X. FILES. There was a throwaway line from the smoking. Man Who has seemed to have orchestrated everything from the Rodney King. Trial to the miracle on Ice Hockey match to the Oscars. He says quote what I don't want to see is the bills winning the Super Bowl as long as I'm alive that doesn't happen. Which is Great? Like there's like a little kind of through line that he for some reason and is not explained that he hates the buffalo bills. The sabers established in one thousand nine hundred ninety played in the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium Until Nineteen ninety-six when Marine Midland arena. Now key bank center opened the team plays in the Atlantic Division of the NHL and the team has won one presidents trophy and three Prince of Wales Trophies which are conference championships said President's trophies the highest points in a season yeah so that was two thousand six two thousand seven during their like real peak-time. I remember that that was your however. Unlike the bills the sabers do not have a league championship having lost the nineteen seventy five Stanley Cup to the Philadelphia Flyers and the nineteen ninety nine Stanley Cup to the Dallas Stars. I remember the ninety nine. Oh I wasn't alive for the other one but we yeah. The first one that they that they lost in that was right when they had the French connection. So I think those were that was like seventy two to seventy nine That was center as Ewbal Perot and left winger Rick Mark Ten or Rick Martin or Rick Martin. Maybe if your friend she's Martin and then right wing was Rennie rubare. Yes so and the seventies were again the buffalo neans revere it there's like the seventies sabres was a big deal. Yeah that was also Tim. Horton played for the sabres around that time. It wasn't very good no no. He's made a lasting impression. He died tragically and started a line of shots drugs when he ran his car. One single car crash but you know people seem to like as his awfully a Tim. Hortons is big around here just as an FYI. Everybody and every time the roll up the rim to win contests comes through. That's also like Mary Buffalo. So very strange to people who are unfamiliar with with such a concept With the roll up the RIM folks. Yeah Oh yeah play get you get your paper. Coffee Cup. Yes and you know. How like with the McDonald's stuff they would have like a ups thing off the front of the label or like. Maybe there's a special sticker on the bottom of your cup. Nope this is. You have to finish drinking. You're up and then you take the little paper Rim of the Cup and you work hard to roll it up. It's baby there's a is it. Words is it a code is it. It's words and I've won several cups of coffee from the roll up to the RIM and exhibit. Very weird concept. Oh Yeah if you're not familiar with unrolling your own Paper Cup to win a prize. Yeah as far as I know. They're the only like fast food chain coffee chain. That question does this as like like that. Particular Rolling up the rim and it's always wet. Yes that's what I'm saying it's Weird. It's like you're not gonNA roll it up while you still have a full cup of. Coffee. Yeah so you have to continue drinking your Paper Cup of coffee. Yeah and then you roll up the rim so gross so since two thousand fourteen. Both the bills and the sabres have been owned by Terry PA- Gula who is a key. Investor in Buffalo's revitalization efforts and many buffalo neons including my father revere Pohjola as the only person keeping both franchises in Buffalo. Because every year when this when the season ends and the sabers did terribly or the bills did terribly or failed to win something or whatever. There's always a rumor that goes around. That's like that's it. They're moving the bills to Canada. That's what's happening. There's more money up there. They're going to do it or they're moving day on them. I don't know I don't know if Canada wants them. I mean there's plenty of bills fans in Canada. I mean they'd drive over the border all the time two games so I don't know I don't know how realistic it is. But there was a lot of times you hear people in bars. That are like yeah. They're leaving the next five years. There's no way to keep the bills here. It's a shame. The buffalo bandits were established in one thousand nine hundred and played their home games in Buffalo Memorial Auditorium Until Nineteen ninety-six when they follow the sabers to Marine Midland They have won eight division championships and four league championships. That was in ninety. Two Ninety three ninety six and two thousand eight. My uncle went to abandon its Championship game when they won. I think it was either the two thousand eight or nine hundred sixty one and he said the fans went in Sane. Yeah people were like running all over the city of Buffalo ripping their Finan cars hanging on light posts. Just losing it and he said he remembers watching. These people just celebrate like crazy people and he was like this is for Lacrosse. I can't imagine if the bills when the super bowl the city of buffalo would burned to the ground just in in sheer joy. Because it's been so long so let's talk about the Buffalo Braves. They don't exist anymore okay. the Buffalo Braves played in the NBA from nineteen? Seventy nine hundred. Seventy eight with their home games held at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium and after the team struggled financially it relocated to California and became the San Diego Clippers. You can still get like a like a vintage brave shirt in some hipster boutiques on elmwood avenue which is also known as the. It's extremely healthy. Were very healthy group of people for you know. Even though we're mostly Polish Italian it's just a lot of key and Woah. Yeah yeah let a week grass. Yeah Wheat Grass. No glowing the chicken wing. It was invented in nineteen sixty four the anchor bar in Buffalo by Teresa Zemo who co owned the bar with her husband. Frank Frank Police amount. There are several versions of the story of how the CAN wingless created one. Involves there some Sun? Dominic arriving late at night with a bunch of his friends and she tossed the dish together since that was the only thing around also another involves dominic asking his mom to make it one night as a treat for Catholic patrons who had been drinking in the bar all night since they were able to eat meat at midnight Still another involves a miss delivery of wings instead of chicken backs next for the restaurant. Spaghetti sauce and frank s theresa to do something with them either way. It's deep fried chicken wings tossed in a vinegar based Cayenne pepper hot sauce and melted butter and.

The winter comes people freeze baby freeze. Meaning the lakes freeze lakes freeze. Come on baby. Freeze AND LAKE. Erie freezes completely solid more often than Lake Ontario because Lake Ontario is deeper exactly so so many times. I've seen on social media people taking pictures of the lake and being like freeze baby freeze. We don't want we need to get to work tomorrow. You know that kind of thing. So many buffalo new and people living in the southern Ontario region. Remember the blizzard of seventy seven which hit the region from January twentieth to February first of that year daily peak wind gusts ranged from forty six to sixty nine miles per hour which is seventy four to one hundred and eleven kilometers per hour and that was recorded by the National Weather Service in Buffalo with snowfall as high as one hundred inches or two hundred fifty four centimeters recorded in areas and the high winds blew this into drifts of to forty feet or nine to twelve meters. That doesn't seem possible right. There were twenty three total storm related deaths in western with five more in northern New York. Dave Tech worked for Marine Midland Bank. At the time he had to spend the night at the office. Mom was home so quote. It wasn't a big deal there. You have it. Yeah there you have it The Blizzard of seventy seven was such a big deal that Jimmy Buffett referenced. It in a song called Montana. Two books have been written about. It called the blizzard by Robert Bear and white death the blizzard of seventy seven by air no Rossi. That's a little. I mean people died aboard board game called the Blizzard of seventy seven. Travel game was created after the storm in the players. Drive around the board trying to collect goods such as groceries. They go to the bank drugstore and hardware with to save spots of home and the gas station before the storm hits once. The storm hits. The boards flipped over to the blizzard side and the players must continue in blizzard conditions. One game a more recent storm from November thirteenth. Many were stuck in their cars. On the ninety downtown people had to leave their cars and people were like like walking in and like bringing supplies like blankets and food and water and that kind of thing for for days eight months after the storm. The snow's remnants still remained in Buffalo. That's July that's July of two thousand fifteen. There was still snow out of control. Okay let's move onto sports dad. You can meet this part. I'm not going to be mad. Buffalo in the surrounding region is home to three major leagues professional sports teams the NHL Buffalo Sabres and the national across league's buffalo bandits. "Most of it is is because during the time when a lot of other rust belt. Cities are cities. In general were tearing down older architecture. Buffalo was so poor. They couldn't afford to do it. So that's why so many like turn of the century architect. Beautiful examples of architecture are still standing. They were abandoned for a long time but now more recently like in the past ten to twenty years there have been like a big. There's been a big movement toward Re like rest store in restoring a bunch of these buildings so it's really cool and there's like a national architecture association and they come to buffalo every year because of so many great. Oh that's buildings that are still around So at the end of the nineteenth century the guarantee building which was constructed by Louis Sullivan. Who was the mentor of our boy? Frank Lloyd Wright He was a prominent. It was a prominent example of an early high rise skyscraper so it was like one of the first skyscrapers. I also when I was an intern at the Darwin. D Martin House which. I'm going to mention in in like one second. I wrote the tour for the guarantee building because they were gonna they had just restored it and they were planning on doing like a like a little historical tour of the building even though it was still like being used for offices and that kind of thing. I don't know if they ever used it they probably. They're like thank you and then they probably threw it away. The Darwin D Martin House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built nineteen o three and nineteen of five. It's considered to be one of the most important projects from Frank. Lloyd Wright's Prairie School era and he referred to it as his magnum opus and he kept the elevation drawing of it above his desk for the rest of his life. That is a cool. If you're ever in buffalo go the Darwin D Martin House. It's actually complex of five buildings and you get a tour of it and it's like back to its original like even the furniture and everything they restored all of the stained glass that was created for it And it's just like a really cool space and also it's in parkside which is a really beautiful neighborhood designed by Frederick Law Olmsted And there's good restaurants around there and things so yeah go to Germany Martin House. Also the Larkin Administration building was Frank Lloyd Wright's First Commercial Commission which was downtown Buffalo. Darwin D Martin actually hired him to create it because he worked for the Larkin Soap Company. But it was demolished in the nineteen sixties So now it's called Larkin Square and it's a kind of community space. They host a lot of food truck. Rodeo type things there. The Twentieth Century saw works such as the art deco style. Buffalo City Hall is mentioned before and Buffalo Central Terminal. I spent abandoned But it's very beautiful electric tower which is very beautiful. The Richardson olmsted complex. So the Richardson H H. Richardson said complex is a complex in north. Just north of the city on elmwood avenue it was built to be a psych ward and it is now a hotel room center. At least part of it is because it's several buildings. I have a terrible story from my mother about the H H. Richardson Alex so I actually called her. They're on their way to Florida and I called her. I was like can I tell the story on the podcast? She was like yes. If you get the the mess it up to get the story straight so when my mother was working in at three east at the hospital she had a patient who was going in for pre up and the patient said to my mom. Now it's in my chart and everything that I cannot be alone okay. You cannot leave me alone. I needed to have someone with me when I come out of the the operation. I need someone to sit with me like I cannot be alone because I have some. I have severe anxiety issues and so my mom was like. Don't worry I'll we'll make sure that someone is with you no matter what if it's not me it's going to be somebody else but can I ask you what's what's wrong. Why do you need that? So apparently about five or six years prior to that. This woman was working on a project for radon testing at the H H. Richardson Complex. And this was when it was abandoned. It wasn't around so she was working with another guy her partner and they were doing radon testing in the basement and he was like all right. I'm going to get going. Do you mind and she was like. Oh Yeah I'm coming to. I'm right behind you. I just need to get whatever this thing. So he goes up the stairs to the top. And apparently there's like a little hang tag thing over the door that says like someone's in here. He forgot to put the hang tag up because he thought she was like literally right behind him. He leaves goes away. The hang tag thing has gone the security guards who were like there to like lock up and everything didn't see the hang tag locker in there and shut off the lights and this is a Friday so she on horses on a Friday so she she said it was so dark. She couldn't see your hand in front of her face. She was in like the full gear. Yeah the protective gear suit. And she said that they used to keep like the especially bad psych patients in the basement they would keep them chained to the wall and they would put on the floor and she said while she was in there she she would just curled up near the door and like banged on the door and screamed and yelled made as much noise as she possibly could. But there's no one around that complex. She was there all weekend. Oh she said she heard the chain scraping along the floor. She heard hey moving. She said she was never the same again. No no lights. Nothing is that not the most horrifying thing you've ever heard so I'm telling you the story because I had heard it before. Yeah years ago but I wanted to get the story straight. I'm listening to them on the phone. Almost like she was like that has stayed with me my whole life. It is like that's such a terrible story. Pause my dad goes I believe I don't believe it. That's all I was like. Of course you don't know about you. I'm telling a story on the PODCAST. So now that the H H Richardson Complex is now Hotel Hotel. That would go in there all the time and take pictures and stuff. Actually there are a lot of really beautiful pictures of it yet. It was abandoned like there are still wheelchairs in the hallway and like beds and sheets on the bed. Yeah pillows and stuff. It's crazy but it's a very beautiful complex Very beautiful super haunted super haunted. So do not stay there anyway. Back up beautiful architecture. Just way all right. Let's talk about the snow. Let's I mean time about the snow. Yeah if okay flu people that deliver New York State. I didn't live in New York for many years and then when I moved to Rochester for my job. I didn't know anything about Rochester other than its nose a lot and I was right. Yup and I remember reading about the Golden Stonewall a word Yep Golden Snowball Award and so basically like my whole impression of of Buffalo Rochester. Syracuse was just. It's knows a lot. Yeah so you're not wrong. Buffalo has a reputation. For being the snowy right but Rochester's consistently the snow your city in the US from winter to winter with Syracuse. Not far behind. It's really obnoxious. I didn't know that stat. Oh yeah well I'll tell you why in a second so however when the circumstances are right which happens every so often. Buffalo gets absolutely so yeah socked in a major way and it's called Lake effect which is a phrase that strikes fear in the hearts of western New Yorkers all over the country effect so what happens is lake effect just as an. Fyi Cold Air comes down from Canada and it rushes across the lakes and what happens is if the lake is not frozen the cold air picks up all of this moisture from the lake and then dumps it boom right as close to wherever it is possible once it gets like full of moisture so if the circumstances are right where the air is dry enough and the way the lake is warm enough it will pick up a lot of moisture dump it boom immediately right on the shore which is Buffalo. There was It was probably about three or four years ago right before Thanksgiving That like people you know could tweet about it and stuff. They were taking pictures from skyscrapers in Buffalo of the impending snow up like that was called November. Yeah and I have a whole out. I didn't mean to jump at no. No please. We'll talk about it. So the reason why Rochester and Syracuse. Get more snow than buffalo is because different. Lake different lakes so the air comes across. Lake Erie is at the West and Lake Ontario the north so they're like the New York state that that like L. Part of New York state is like between those two lakes so when the cold air rushes across it picks up not only from Lake Erie but also Lake Ontario and it dumps it at the meeting point of that which tends to be Rochester Syracuse. It's it's like when they founded this place they must have came in May. Oh yeah they were like. This is a beautiful Liz. It's beautiful never leaving and then I don't know what happened later. But Yep exactly so. That is what happens most often. But you will hear. This is a phrase that you will only here in.
