Actor Dean Cain Describes Meeting and Dating Brook Shields
"When you were in college, you were still really into sports, you weren't athlete, you mentioned even after college, how you played for the Buffalo Bills. How did you get connected with Brooke Shields in college? How did you ask her out? I heard you guys dated. So did you kind of see her and think, you know what? I think I'm gonna go chat with her or did you kind of already know you're both a Hollywood or LA connection? No, I don't think that was part of it. For me, just having that knowing that world, it wasn't something that was unfamiliar to me. But she was a year ahead of me. And we ended up having a class together. My sophomore year, religion, two 11. Malcolm diamond, the professor, and I remember I just was waiting for class. It's like, you know, wait for a class to get out. and we were in this big hallway. Staircase kind of going up. And I looked up and she looked at me at the same time, I looked at her and kind of just saw each other, it's mild. That was it. And then we just started chatting here and there. And I really, there's a lot of baggage that would go with dating someone that famous. Even at Princeton, even though Princeton, a lot of the kids were like, oh, we're so cool. We're going to pretend like we don't care that she is who she is. Oh, who cares? And then there was a lot of that stuff kind of going on, but I didn't think twice. I was an athlete and just doing my thing. And then we sort of met. And after we dated a little of my sophomore year, I literally said there's no way. I'm going to ever date this woman. It's just too much stuff. What a pain in the tail. No possible way. And then, of course, my junior year in senior year was still dating there. But that happens. Things change. Things change, yeah. Yeah. Well, I saw that reason. So that's how I developed a really normal boy meets girl girl meets boy in the hallway outside of class.

Dean Cain on His Journey From Trailer Park to Princeton to Hollywood
"So dean, your life has been so fascinating. So I wanted to ask you a little bit about just kind of your journey before we talk about more of the news stuff. I saw that you spent some of your childhood in Michigan and then in California. And in high school, when you were in Santa Monica, you were excelling in sports, and you even played some baseball with Charlie Sheen and Rob Lowe. Is that correct? And what was that like? It's mostly correct. I grew up, so I grew up in I was born in Michigan, but I moved to California when I was three. My mom up and took off with her two kids. Her first husband was my biological father. It was not an ideal husband, was philandering and so she left and came out to LA to be an actress with two kids to the Asian kids. And we looked more on my given name as Tanaka. So she came out here with us too, and met and fell in love with my dad. Who she married a year later. And then through a really terrible story actually, a woman was raped and I believe killed in an apartment next to us or right near us. And then the next day myself and a couple other guys, my brother and another couple kids were out playing cops and robbers as they used to back in the day. And I was the youngest and so I wasn't able to have I didn't get to a gun. So I went looking for something and I found the real gun and it was apparently the weapon that was used and that day my dad borrowed, I don't ten, $12,000 from his parents in South Dakota and moved us to a trailer park in Malibu. And I grew up in a trailer park in Malibu, which sounds, you know, like trailer park. Yeah, but it was in Malibu. So we'd spend our days outside all day long on the beach, running around, and I grew up with kids like Sean Penn, Chris Penn Rob Lowe, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, all those kids were just, we were all just part of this one little Malibu group. I guess all our parents were involved in the business, not all of them, but in some way or another. And so through this weird happenstance, those kids all ended up being actors. Now I played baseball Charlie for a long time. Rob, rob was never the great athlete. Rob even back in the elementary school was just all the girls loved him and he's so pretty. And he loved the girls back. So that was the that was the skinny and rob, so to speak. Charlie very good baseball player. Played on teams with him forever. And then went to high school, Santa Monica high school. And I was a good athlete student. It worked out real well for me. A lot of the kids are madly when they got to Santa Monica worked able to compete at that level, unfortunately. So a lot of the kids stopped playing sports, Charlie continued to play for a while. I don't even know what he did to seeing it if he played a scene here or not. And then I was lucky enough to with my grades and thank you to get the president of the university, had a wonderful career at Princeton. Grew up a lot turned into him and went from a boy to a man there and played very well. I played football. I mean, football ran track and I played volleyball. And then I got a chance to play for the Buffalo Bills afterward, which was great. And got hurt right away. And then it's been acting and directing and filmmaking ever since.

Connecting 'The Silence of the Lambs' to the Modern Liberal

I think the league is stepping up its efforts to figure out exactly how it's going to handle the postseason. And I think we start with the fact that nobody expects that that Bengals bills game from Monday night will be resumed and rescheduled as one person said to me this week. The game has bad mojo. It's time to move forward. It's time not to play it, which leaves us in the question of what does the league then do? Matthew Hasselbeck proposed one idea that was very interesting in which basically the number one seed and it would be based on winning percentages, the number one C would have the choice to choose from either a first round buy or home field advantage through the playoffs and then number two seed based on one 8 percentage would get to choose the other. Now, I think the league is discussed derivations of that particular formula, but the one that I think has gained the most traction is where the league would base it on win percentage and that if there were a conference championship game that involved either the chiefs if they were able to secure the number one seed, Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders in a game on ABC or the bills and Bengals who were involved on Monday night and will wind up playing one fewer game than everybody else that the championship game in the AFC could be played on a neutral site. And that seems to be the plan right now that's got some momentum. But before that plan were to be enacted, the owners of 32 teams would have to vote on it. And we don't know whether they would approve it or not. If they were to approve it, then that might be the logical course of action. Now here's a wild card that I don't think would happen, but one NFC team executive this morning said that the magnanimous magnanimous gesture here would be for the Kansas City Chiefs who have hosted the conference championship game the last four years to say to the Buffalo Bills or the Cincinnati Bengals, we're going to seed home field advantage to you being that you both beat us head to head and no matter what happens here.

"Wake up as the rest of his body was healing. And last night he was able to emerge and follow commands and even ask who had won the game. I can clarify, he did not speak. He was able to communicate in writing when he asked, did we win? The answer is, yes, demar you won. You've won the game of life. And that just goes to show you just exactly where demar Hamlin's mind has been at this at this time. He is, he's thinking about his team. He's thinking about his teammates. And when I actually asked the question that was about how much he's understanding of all of this right now, how much the doctors can tell that they said that it does seem clear that not only not only are the lights on with him, but it's clear that somebody's home. It's clear that he is thinking that he is understanding. They also said that he expressed some level of shock when they told him that he missed the game, essentially, that here we are a couple of days later as he's as he's coming awake. I also want to add quickly that we're starting to see this tribute that we've seen about a block away from where we're standing. We're starting to see it grow a little bit with poster boards and messages and candles. And there's a group that's handing out some stickers and flyers that have a 5 one three. The 5 one three is the area code to Cincinnati the 5 is in the Bengals letters, the Bengals colors I should say with the stripes, the three is in the red and blue and white of the Buffalo Bills, so the people here in Cincinnati continue to think about the people in Buffalo as well as demar Hamlin. Certainly has been an amazing outpouring of support and colleague great coverage all week. We so appreciate all of your insight from Cincinnati. Was that out to buffalo now where Diana rossini is standing by then and what's the latest from buffalo? Field, it's been a wave of relief here at Orchard park in quite a different story than we've seen over the last few days, even as early as this morning where it was really just a sliver of normalcy. Communication with the bills seemed very minimal as they were trying to figure out what they wanted to do next, but this afternoon once good news was spread, things started to change. And it seems that this bill's team is getting ready, preparing for this New England Patriots game on Sunday. They had a full speed practice this afternoon. And we're going to hear from bill's head coach, Sean McDermott, along with other bills, players for the first time since Hamlin's injury on Monday night. We're going to have that live shot that Diana was just referencing at four 30. And thank you, Diana, for that coverage there. We've got our two players on the show today. Marcus spears and keyshawn Johnson and swag you have a lot of positive news here in the past 24 hours. We're all so grateful for that. And you heard Diana use the word a sliver of normalcy in Buffalo today with a practice.

"PDO cast with our guest cam shirt on today. We are we've adopted the buffalo Sabres and we're deep diving them today. Cam, so we talked so far about the identity of this team, the way they play the combination of tej Thompson and Alex talk, Rasmus Dali's return of form. What else in the buffalo saber is really interesting? Well, I guess we should probably talk a little bit about their defense. Are they lost? I thought with Rosenstein, we kind of covered that. Yeah, but I kind of want to, you know, they have more players. Like you're a big fan of Owen power. We've talked about him before on this show. Yes. But you want to talk about Elliot bush. And I know I can see it in your eyes. I'm a big ilia bushin guy. Well, he's going to get out. He's going to get a chance here next to erasmus valley. Yeah, so it'll be good to note that we saw him into his sandals and go down with it. It's not good to know. But Matthias Samuelson went down with a bad knee injury in Vancouver. It looked like he looks like he's going to be out for some time, even though even if it's not as serious. They've already lost Doki hare you puck in the face. So they're kind of having to already play some players up in the lineup. Yeah, we're going to look at a chance for Ilya bushkin and his brand of physical hockey. To play alongside Rasmus delian, give it a really interesting give it a really interesting mix. That bad at moving the puck. He obviously has a reputation of defensive defenseman, a little bit more physical. But I do like his ability to shut down the cycle. He's actually quite good at retrieving pucks as well. I don't think that teams are going to really be able to take advantage of him on dumpings and that's going to be half the entries against that you face. And I've always had some time for Jacob Bryson. I'm excited to see him in a top four role. Well, the thing that I liked about their previous construction before these injuries where they had rossmann style in on one pair. One power and other than Jacob brayson on the third. And that gave them at least one guy out on the ice at all times whose first instinct is, let's get this puck up the ice as quickly as we can. Yeah, and that feeds into what you're talking about in terms of the new identity of this team and the way they've been playing. And so part of the issues with having injuries all of a sudden is not only does it force players into bigger roles, but it kind of takes away some of that sort of spread throughout the lineup of having that skill. And I think I'd be a bit more upset about losing that dynamic if they didn't have Lawrence peel it. To come out from the AHL and makes us try and return. I don't know, probably a PDO cast favorite.

"And they're not doing that. They convincingly crushed the flames. Yeah. Yeah, they did. And I think the manner in which you're doing it in terms of just watching the way they're playing. So far this season, which is kind of a carry over from how they ended last year as well. Is very encouraging to me. Now, basically, unfortunately, all we have in terms of the public data to gauge what I like to call pace. Is combining shot attempts for and against because that's all we have. I understand the flaws in it, especially like a bad team. Let's say Columbus, for example, that's getting rock defensively. Is going to show up as playing a quote unquote fast pace when in reality they're just buried in their own zone giving up a litany of shot attempts against. And it doesn't necessarily mean they're playing fast it just means that they're conceding a lot. At the same time, though, this sabers team last year. Was 32nd in terms of 5 one 5 shot attempts for and against combined. Which reflected a pretty snail's pace they were playing at this year so far. They're up to third with only Vegas and Pittsburgh ahead of them. And behind them is New Jersey and Carolina. And I'd say that's a pretty accurate reflection of teams that play generally high event hockey that are trading shots born against and moving up and down the ice and not necessarily just trying to kind of keep the puck pinned against the wall for a long period of time. And the reason why I bring that up is because, you know, you mentioned that sort of talks a culture and how negative the vibes were towards the end of that Ralph Kruger era with Jack eichel still there and playing heard and then clearly not wanting to be there anymore. It was maddening watching that group of the buffalo sabers. Try to grind out these sort of slow offensive zone cycle sequences when, yeah, they were a flawed team, but they had a bunch of pretty good skaters who theoretically should be able to at least get up and down the ice quickly, and they just showed no interest in actually catering to that or playing that way. And what I love about John Granado right now and what the Sabres team is doing is I think they've recognized all right, we have a lot of young fresh legs and guys who move up and down the ice pretty quickly. Let's try to kind of shine a light on that and let them actually succeed as opposed to forcing them to play some sort of random hockey doesn't necessarily conducive to their skill set. And it's interesting that you mentioned that Carolina as well as high event teams for a lot of shots for and against because you tend to think of like, well, what kind of like what does grinding it do in 2023 or 2022, 2023? This is a very fast game. Offense is king. Speed is king, scoring off the Russia's king. You have, you have ten or 12 players in your lineup every night that can score off the rush that can beat goalies from distance. That can beat defenders one on one.

One of the most restrictive gun legislation cities in the entire country. New York City, you have to have a special permit, a special permission to carry a firearm in New York City. And we're two of the most violent cities, not just in America, but in the world. Chicago and New York City. Yep. And politicians coming here to buffalo and that's another thing that really bothered me is in the hours after the shooting, how many politicians were climbing over one another. To basically appear at press conferences, appear at podiums, and yet the victims literally were just gunned down. Right. I mean, even the president of the United States, making a visit to buffalo and speaking of Joe Biden. He has been all over the map. And if that suspect confesses to a crime, during a police beating, because it was a hot topic with Rodney King, they should still throw the book of the criminal being beaten by cops. And again, this was in the 1990s. There would be assuming somebody had committed a murder if the police beat the confession out of him, and he did commit the murder. He did commit the murder. And confessed to it, and that's what convicted him. Now, I would want that guy.

"And if this manifesto is belonging to this scumbag, this anti semitic racist, then if you actually read it, and if these are his words, if these are his feelings, the other words of a madman. There are the words of someone who was clearly mentally ill, who and if you do want to have that discussion on politics, labeled himself as a communist, you can actually make the argument based on this scumbags manifesto if it is his, that he's more on the left side of the political spectrum. But that being said, there's no one to blame for the horrific acts of this racist anti semitic scumbag, then that mentally ill individual himself. And yeah, I mean, hearts are breaking all across buffalo. You know, my wife is a social worker and actually does regular shopping at that store for her clients. And I can't imagine that a loved one of anyone who just basically goes shopping. Someone who's going shopping on a Saturday afternoon goes food shopping for their family and they're killed by a mentally ill, horrific scumbag. And buffalo was hurting. We are all hurting in this community based on the actions of this madman. And I think it's important that we heal. And yes, when it's the appropriate time that we do have a discussion about what drove this individual, why he did it. And at the end of the day, I think if there is a fair investigation, a rational one, when people are thinking clearly and not still having the raw emotions of the shooting taking place, you're going to see that this scumbag is mentally ill, that there were warning signs the Internet, warning signs on social media. For years, by the way. Not like one. That his family ignored law enforcement ignored in schools ignored and had action been taken before this could have been prevented..

"Going to talk through some really tough stuff that happened in our area. As you all have probably seen in her very sad, horrific event right in our backyard here this weekend in Buffalo. First off from the financial guys from Staphon for myself, our thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives were taken far too early from us. And for their family and friends who are now in mourning, we also want to have the first responders in our prayers because it was a very tough day for them to see what happened at that local supermarket and to see the families and friends there. A disgusting vile human being who was now part of our city of good neighbors drove hours away to commit an unspeakable act and tragedy in our community. We will not use this person's name throughout the episode because he's a piece of garbage and we do not want to give him any further attention. He drove from an area near Binghamton to our city in open fire at a local tops friendly markets in a predominant predominantly African American area of buffalo. He murdered ten of our great community and injured another three. This individual, though, had a prior record of threats involving members of his own high school on his own community. Threats involved using a firearm to injure and kill people. He also made a history of horrific comments and thoughts on many online platforms. How this individual was able to purchase a firearm and especially one of this nature is beyond us. We have laws like the safe back to prevent these things from happening, especially with someone with a prior history like this individual. At some point as a nation, we need to come together and put politics aside. These acts of hatred and evil in the last few years have come from people of all backgrounds, all races, all ethnicities, different backgrounds, and political affiliations. There have more than 200 already this year, mass shootings in the United States, not to mention the hundreds and the thousands of other shootings in many cities and neighborhoods across the United States..

"It's a few decades in which the city's economy and the region's economy has been very much on a downbound train until recently and recently there's real signs that population and the economy are picking up. But all through the troubled times of buffalo's recent history over the last 50 to 60 years, the Buffalo Bills have been central to bringing the community together and giving the community something to root for. It's a very unique relationship between a town and team that's really only like one other in the NFL and that's the Green Bay Packers. Most other NFL cities are much bigger than buffalo. The metro areas that they serve are much bigger. But the bills for the longest time have been just a central part of our identity in western New York. This is breaking news from news 8. Good afternoon, breaking news on this Monday, a hefty price tag for a new Buffalo Bill stadium. Governor Kathy hochul confirming the state and Erie county taxpayers will be asked to contribute $850 million in public funds for the construction of a new bill stadium. If the state legislature approves it, the Buffalo Bills will likely be set in Buffalo for the next three decades. And there's a sense of security to that that would be very important to the community. This is a city that did lose an NBA franchise that lost industrial power after industrial power over the years. There is, of course, another side to this story. There are significant numbers of people in Buffalo and in other parts of New York State that look at this as too much public money going to a business entity. That is the Buffalo Bills owned by a billionaire. So there's a debate in Buffalo just as there is another parts of the state. However, the current stadium will soon be 50 years old. Orchard park, the new stadium, the new home of the Buffalo Bills. More than 600 men in machines labor to complete the new facility in time for the 73 Buffalo Bills football season. It is in very rough shape and would need an awful lot of work, and even with a lot of work, it would not meet the modern day NFL standards. So the presumption has been that if the bills could not get a new stadium, there would be the grave danger that the bills could end up leaving town sometime in the next few years because the lease is up only in a couple of years. So is that how this deal came about? It was just sort of proactive. Do we have any idea? Well, the bills made clear that they need a new stadium. Ron recue was asked if a stadium deal was not reached. Would the bills continue to play at high Mark stadium? No. We absolutely will not. The NFL made clear that the bills need a new stadium. I do believe that a stadium long term is going to be needed in that marketplace. I love Ralph Wilson stadium, but it's got to compete against a lot of these new stadiums that have a lot of very important features that stadium doesn't have. So basically, this was bound to happen. Whomever was governor, be it Andrew Cuomo or Kathy hochul would be at this point in time, looking to come up with some sort of a deal with Erie county and with Kim and Terry pegula, the owner of the bills, to build a new stadium. Clearly, as soon as governor hochul took office in August, people started asking questions. So I come with the buffalo question. We know you have a study underway. What we're wondering about is, what is your timeline for a deal? Are you hoping to see a deal by the end of the year? And we have heard over the last few weeks that there was going to be a deal. There's going to be a deal. My desire is I'm a Buffalo Bills fan. Let's lock this down. Let's get it done. So we are very intently focused on keeping the bills here. What's your parks their first choice? They're only choice. It's Orchard park, and we'll make it all happen. It was only announced a week ago, which some people clearly don't like because it was very late in the state budget process. The state budget was doing on April 1st, which is now late. And it did take place in secret. The negotiations did take place in secret, but all business negotiations take place in secret. There is concern among some that the deal came so close to the budget deadline that it couldn't be properly vetted that there couldn't be, say, legislature hearings on it. And that is a much more legitimate concern than the idea that this thing would be negotiated publicly because it feels like this are never negotiated publicly. So the state of New York pays the line share. Yes. And it's a record breaking sum of money. Well, it depends on how one looks at it. The public contribution, according to our analysis of the buffalo news, is less than the 73% public contribution to stadium deals in smaller NFL markets over the past two decades. Things are different in a place like Los Angeles or Las Vegas. We are so ready for major league sports in this town. But there have been very major subsidies there as well. So for example, there was a public subsidy to the new stadium in the Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Raiders. There are the state paid 750 million to build a $1.9 billion stadium. It's the biggest dollar amount, but it's not the biggest share ever. And I have a feeling that part of the reason there is some blowback is that the peculiars are billionaires. And not only are they billionaires, but they're fracking billionaires. And this is a state which would rejected fracking years ago, and that a lot of public figures have spoken out against that form of natural gas drilling. And here we have a fracking billionaire getting a lot of state money to build the stadium. Okay, the fact that the pergolas are getting a single dime of public funds is kind of a shocker. I thought those days were long gone, especially when you're cutting funds for schools. You know, regular people has responded to that particular criticism yet? No. And she has some personal ties to the team, yeah. There are personal ties in that number one. Kathy hochul is a big Buffalo Bills fan. Because I'm a Buffalo Bills fan. But more importantly than that, her husband is the general counsel where Delaware north companies. I have the coolest job in the world. I have the coolest job in the world. I have the coolest job in the world. I have the coolest job in the world. I have the coolest job in the world. I have the coolest job in the world because I work for Delaware, north companies. Delaware north companies is one of the largest concession air companies in the entire nation. Ha. Currently, Delaware north handles the concessions at high Mark stadium, the bill stadium today. And so the company that Kathy hochul's husband works for benefits whenever a Buffalo Bills fan buys a beer at the current stadium. There's a lot of questioning of that. However, that contract for the concessions doesn't carry over to a new stadium. Okay, but there's a lot of reasons for people to think this is suspicious or at least sticky or maybe a little clumsy. I mean, the governor herself has a direct tie to the business operations of the stadium through her husband. She's financing a stadium for a team that's owned by a fracking billionaire while she's running for reelection and this is a huge giveaway of public funds to the NFL to the Buffalo Bills. Is there a chance that while she's running for reelection, this sort of goes south on her? It is certainly possible looking at the race for governor here in June. Neither of her two opponents have really caught.

I what the bells used to travel over the border for one game in season and then there was one actual season game to succeeded where the buffalo bills didn't there. They actually successfully integrated american fans that live in the city of buffalo to be in blue jays fans where the bills could never really get that whole thing and never felt like a home game during any of those. I've been to a couple of the weirdest like pilgrimage every nfl jersey. There i remember going to one of those games. And i think there was only two teams. I didn't see represented.
