"It's the idea that Bill watts is talking to Dave Meltzer. That just doesn't that feels weird to me. I don't imagine the cowboy being like, let's call up the dirt cheap guys. That's just hard for me to imagine. Yeah, I think melcher was the aggressor in that the owner of cowboy had a point to make. He could always get older Meltzer. That's true. And so I know that some of the guys became uneasy when they found out that cowboy was talking to the observer. As much as he apparently was, I don't know how much that would be. I don't know, but a lot of the talents were uneasy that that was occurring. Well, some of the tale and apparently are uneasy with what's going on here, too, in particular doctor death and Terry Gordy, they're going to drop the tag titles to Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham here at center stage. They go 20 minutes in a pretty good match here, but there's been a big push for Doc and Gordy and now drop the belts. Kind of out of nowhere it seems. When they ready to go back to Japan, have they had enough of this American experiment? Yeah, they wanted less work and they got big money for going to Japan. They were supremely over, but it was a disappointment. You know, I always thought that they were one of the best tag teams I ever saw. I still believe that all these years later. And I was salivating over the prospects of matches with Doc and Gordy versus the steiners, for example, doom, you know, there are a lot of teams that Doc and Gordon could have worked with and had a great matches. So as disappointing that they were leaving. But it wasn't a total surprise. I mean, I think Japan was still their first home after all those years. They made great money. They changed their lifestyle thanks to mister bob and Nokia's money because they worked for both companies at one time. Different times, but they were for both companies. So it was disappointed that they lived, because we lost, like I said. To me, it was like, we're losing the best tag team in the business. They're durable, they're strong, they can be heels, they could be maybe paces. They have great chemistry and it made the product better. The more dock and Gordy we had on television, I think the better our television was. So we talked about Barry wind and winning a tag title here, but he's also, according to the observer, gonna be working as an assistant Booker to dusty, dusty is gonna be spending more time monitoring the house shows, so Barry is gonna work as his support in a way where maybe JJ Dillon did that once upon a time. But Barry Windham has a creative mind is not something I've ever heard much about. What'd you think of this? Well, I was willing to give it a try if it made dusty more efficient and more effective and it taught somebody like Barry a young guy who's been the Venice all his life, son of black Jack, et cetera, et cetera, then I'm all for it. As I was all for it, if it dusty better, it does it gets to find that magic again that sprinkle up magic dust on his creative and I thought it was fine. But look, I love very Windham at one time, was probably one of the top four or 5 workers in the entire world. But golly, he just he went JJ. J chase roll with the horsemen, and trying to hurt the chickens in a Crockett era. There's nothing short of extraordinary. Be honest with you. So J says that was a very, very valuable asset. So I was hoping that would work, Connie. I really did, but, you know, very had never been in that role before. So as I'll wait and see. Bruno sammartino is going to pop up, do a little bit of color commentary with Tony schiavone and also do an empty arena interview with Tony schiavone that Meltzer was really high on and said it was one of the best babyface promos, but it's kind of interesting to see Bruno, a WWF guy here in WCW. On the hotline, you're going to be hinting that Paulie might be brought back to manage pillman and Austin as a tag team. And maybe Austin wanted to get a push as a Ric Flair clone. Meltzer had this to say, big mistake because Steve Austin is in no way shape or form Ric Flair. Flair's still an active wrestler, so at best it looked like a cheap copycat, but he doesn't have a buddy landale personality, where he can get the right kind of heat for being a copycat of a successful main event. I don't think anybody has ever written that ever since. That Steve Austin doesn't have a buddy Landau personality. My goodness. Ash crazy. There are two different people. Yeah. And all of a sudden we're going to become one of the biggest stars of the biggest star and wrestling ever ever. You know, I always had high hopes for Steve, but not as a Ric Flair clone. The clone thing in wrestling or promoters, the example was we talked earlier about Butch Reed. Well, we could fix this JYD leaving very easily. This is how another muscular black guy put him in that cast him in our book him, whatever, in that role, and everything's going to be okay. And that's just silly. It's just silly. We tried George wells. We tried brick house brown. And among others, I can't even think of off top of my head, but none of them worked. And again, the answer was right there under our nose and hacksaw Butch Reed. So. The cloning thing, I remember when Jimmy snuka left WWWF, I think they brought a guy named cephei. Another island guy. And he looked a lot like a snooker, which I didn't think it was a plus. Colored by casi was happening or just trying to play snooker with a snooker lookalike. And a fans are smart, man. Especially today. You know, sometimes I read things that are, I think are somewhat ridiculous. And I understand too, that people make these comments, and that moxie thing, I got all this negative feedback, and they made sure I was tagged in. So I could make sure I saw some of the shit. But I could promise you I didn't spend one minute of my life researching it. It's how I felt. It was an opinion, and I think I have to explain my opinion, so my Twitter, or here on the show. In wheeling west virginia on the thirteenth two shows one in oxford alabama. But that's really a continental show just Flare taken it on brad armstrong but we have jcp show at the field house in williamson. West virginia on the fourteenth were in columbus georgia. And then we're doing. Tv again on the fifteenth in atlanta Later that night on the fifteenth there are three shows. of course. we're going to have a matinee squeezed in there but college park. Georgia is gonna see ron garvin and black bart on top Norfolk virginia is going to see dusty. Magnum sam houston taken on totally only and orange once again a bunk house match. And in pensacola florida. A jcp promoted show with the rock and roll versus the midnights on that same card magnum on that same card with telly. Even the road. Warriors working with the russians the main event as flare versus dusty. And pensacola show is loaded for bear but strangely there's only two thousand folks there do you think. The pensacola market was softening. Is september a bad month in that era. Was there not adequate promotion. Why do you think that show would only have two thousand folks there with that loaded of a card. Wow what was the. What was the middle show So you had three shows that they on the fifteenth one in college. Park georgia one. In norfolk virginia But then the big show to me is pensacola florida it's buddy landale over sam. Houston manny fernandez. Over crusher khrushchev brad. Steve armstrong over a aren't and only the cue jimmy value in there with the barbarian. The rock and roll's are going to beat the midnight express. Tommy rich is going to defeat. They just relied on the cable One thing i tell you something that is a very real thing and people may use it as a cop out. But i know it's real 'cause i've been around forty years school. Starting yep was made a difference in our business. September notoriously was not a good matz for wrestling. Let me pile on their arm. Because i feel like sometimes people think all that's an excuse because brutal sometimes say well. The gas station opened. But you gotta appreciate. This is a socio economically. Depressed area The median income household income is not exactly what you might imagine and when kids go back to school. It's not just a matter of oh they can't get down there now. The can't afford to take the kids. Because you've got all these new fees you gotta pay for the kids football helmet. You gotta pay for him. Some new books. You gotta pay for him. Some new shoes you got to pay from new clothes and if you've got a whole litter of those little rugrats got all that going plus you got lunch money etc etc so there's a lot of newfound expenses whenever kids will go back to school and you know maybe that ten dollars on wrestling just didn't quite check all the boxes that you needed to that month. Well that and the fact that Jim crockett promotions was a hot commodity. That time we were. We're we're flaming up right. Shaw betcha the ticket prices were very high. That's another negative plus the fact that all those years prior to that continental had ran pensacola every single sunday so it had been ran a lot prior to getting there so it probably feels like well. I'll just see them next week. Yeah i mean all these guys. We can't afford to pay those. Jim crockett promotions. But our guys who were familiar with anyway. We'll be back next sunday so we'll just go to that show. They could all be reasons that two thousand people. That's that's not not much and i bet you. The rent on that. Civic center was not cheap fable. North carolina is where you're at the very next day on september sixteenth. Think about that. You're going from pensacola to fayetteville one. Day later once again going to be a bunk house match dusty magnum and sam on one side totally aren't on the other on the eighteenth. You're gonna be wrestling the rock and roll express along with your partner only to draw at the dorton arena On the twentieth. You're going to be in singles action against terry taylor. What are you. Remember your first impressions being of a young terry taylor here. A lot of people thinking this era. He was trying to for lack of a better word. Do his best ric flair impression and he will no way to dispute that but he did it from a perspective. I think idolize mayor it wasn't trying to be a cheap copy. He he analyzed wreck and he copied. Rick he just took it to an extent of everything from the robe. You know to a little bit of the And all you know some of the things he did during his match figures it was to pay tribute to rick. But terry was when terry was being terry. He was a very good upper middle baby face. That had good skills was a handsome guy. You know Gear always looked top-shelf tan. And all those things that you can do to to make yourself look like a bigger star and he had really good baby face skills so he was a guy that you figured you wanted on his own your card to be that upper middle guy that could put your top guys over and It would benefit both guys if it was competitive match and terry at a pretty good career as far as wrestling your lasted for. I don't know how many years has had a pretty good run. I think this is one of the first singles matches you guys would have had wrestled each other in tag matches but it feels like the promotion had to be pretty high on him here because not only..

"Let's go to the ring you know. Every now and again we We have opportunities to be pitched something for sale. And they'll say well. Here's your bronze level. And here's your silver level and here's your gold level. I feel like we kind of heard that the promo version sam houston doing his best. Try to spit it out. A new guy but she could hear You can almost hear the wheels industies. Starting hang on industies. Enthusiasm is infectious. It almost wasn't even about what dusty was saying. Dusty was excited and his excitement. Just comes through the screen. Does it not when you say dusty. Rhodes what's the first thing. Everybody says charisma. Yeah unparalleled and that that is bigger than anyone promo. That is something that you have every time you run into somebody and you're having a one on one conversation or you're talking to ten thousand people are talking to tv audience. It comes across. And that's what he had email. Sam that the simple story of this angle was dusty. Said at some point. I'm sure early on this kid. Sam houston is a new edition. Jim crockett promotions scott. A lot of talent he scattered bright future. We like the fact that you know. He's young and inexperienced but he's he's in their learning and he. That's all dusty. Would've had to give it a rub. Not that he overplayed it or overdid it. So we looked at that him being a protege of dusty that's another way of of striking a blow at dusty break his proteges arm and as easy for dusty to step in and pick up that promo and now you put a cast on sam's arm we go around. We do some six man's and the rub for sam is unbelievable. Can you imagine being partners. Were those two guys. No i mean. I can't even imagine it. It's a whole different realm and it's a rub that you keep your entire career people. You know still talk about that. I'm sure so man just everybody one on this deal. Everybody and only when he starts talking man. It would mesmerized me because articulate intelligent. Got right to the point and he didn't scream holler he. Just there's nothing more frightening than a guy that's in your ear and very quietly telling you how he's gonna cut your head off and stick it on a post schist is just terrified. You're not booked on the show. But i just wanted to get your perspective of at this point. Did you feel like someone working in the business. It's all hands on deck. Against vince mcmahon in the world wrestling federation and just felt like to me that the promoters are getting together and see in the huge success that vance was having and started circle the wagons. You know maybe we should have some conversations and you would always swap out like an individual talent like a in a one match maybe would go to work for a big city and a big show for another promoter coast. Nwea basically all those promoters had an agreement they would work together and you know do all the right things where each other was concerned. But i think awa was pretty much a stand alone you know company and so for them to do a co op. Show with jim crockett promotions. You know it it. Let everybody out there know that. Hey maybe we better start working together a little closely. The promotions cost. You know he was continuing to go around and take the top talent from every territory so in a sense. Jim crockett to combat that. You know he had flare six months or so. Before you know the rock and roll express arrived in the midnight express and the buddy landale and the arn anderson's and all these guys that came along and eighty five for jim. Crockett he was. He was assembling an all star team as well and it was just who could get the dallat because there were no contracts in those days it was a handshake deal and it was your word and and all that but it was a race to gobble up all the talent in pretty much. I'm sorry june seventeenth so right before what we're looking at was only in your opinion taking little vailed shots at tag teams quote unquote up north. Well you know it could've no-one only he could have been getting dig and to the baby faces on with. Wwf at the time he could have been pointing towards you know some guys from making headlines iraqi roll express. Who knows exactly who he was. Yeah maybe it is the rock else. 'cause they're gonna come in and maybe at the next. Tv's so that's probably you're probably own something there you know. maybe it was just. Yeah yeah absolutely so you know. That's two hundred fifty miles or whatever it is. You don't get muchly up the next day you go. Gm very early coach. You had to be at the stadium allow stadium shows. You had to be there early and this was a huge show. A lot of things were happening. That was that was our angle off. Tbs and on off the syndicated shows that was you know the true test of olien. I defended. I'm sure the national tag tag. I don't A lot of things were happening. I'd also being given the word that even though i've been shopped around and booked around went to these other places. I was told that okay. When you come back for the stadium show you will be on the charlotte crew. It's exclusively which meant a lot to me. Because i mean. I was booked around shopped around book. Different places and setup north and all that stuff which was fine. Whatever they wanted to do was fine with me but now told i could come back. Get a place in that. I would not be leaving anymore which meant a lot Customers going to give me some state stability plus the crockett crew. That was just staying in the carolinas. Since i got there mar in march You know they were starting to get that turned around and we were going to be not going now. Only and i would be spending more time in the carolinas. And the the paychecks. Immediately the very next week were much better than they had been going to say grand rapids and some of those towns and skipping around down and some of the georgia towns and all this was this was what was going to be the kick ass crew was going to be the charlotte crew. Well and what did they. It was We're gonna play a little bit of audio from the end of that match. It's great american bash ninety-five again. It's the major pay per view before pay per view was really thing becomes a video released but twenty seven thousand fans are. There aren't an earlier national champs and buzz sawyer and dick slater going to be challenging Let's let's take a listen and the champions. Tv essence. sunday nights By and large it was it was. It wasn't a national presence and that's a lot of young guys wanted. He wanted to build a brand so. I think it was just time. But i don't remember ever being any animosity you know. It was discussed. Terry knew what his schedule was. He knew what he was they were looking at doing and he was excited about going back to the mid atlantic and just on that train moving pretty fast. Let's mention that he's gonna defeat black bart for the national title and hold it until stark eighty-five when all fo- buddy landale would defeat him for it. this is. It feels as if terry taylor is poised for a bigger ruin here. Did you believe at this point. Terry taylor was eventually going to become the world champion. Did you see that in him or not so much. I saw that possibility being real tears personality and kissed perceived arrogates in the eyes of a decision. Makers never did him. But when he mashes taylor They had good chemistry. They're really good solid matches and it was sort of like a philosophy one zero one. You had the chicken shit. He'll head achieve your gaining unfair advantage. And you had the baby face who could out wrestle. The bad guy until the bad guy cheated to gain that advantage so as classics losses. I think is the phrase that they would use but my question i guess is what does that look like on tv day. I've been led to believe that. Sometimes it's like you guys were quote unquote booking the enhancement. Talent they just show up looking for work. And you know what you got when you get there. Do you have any communication with those guys ahead of time on. Tom's sometimes it would just be. The referee would care them the initiative. You know there was nothing really to talk about. It was if there was any conversation it would just simply be. Hey you know. This is the time we've got a go ahead and tell you in advance. We need to look strong or working with slater and and You know less sawyer so you know just to let you know upfront not be an a dick here but i need to get my shit in and sometimes you would not say that you would just be implied in the guys that were. They were smart enough to know they were there to enhance us and that was their goal for the day. That was their job description of the day and very seldom. Would you have anyone that that wanted to push the envelope and let's just say try. It's a fascinating time to be a wrestling fan. I can only imagine what it must be like to be in the business. The two days later on june thirtieth nineteen eighty-five cody rhodes is born. And knowing what's going on now in twenty twenty one with a w. and that you guys are back together and of course all the tangled webs that the roads and the andersons would leave as part of that four horsemen story. I can't look at that and not smile and think about boy if we only knew back then if we were to go back and talk to mardi lundy here on june thirtieth nineteen ninety-five say see that baby dusty has gotten that picture right there. You know and dusty and magnum there were like like father inside you know i. It was a close knit group in those days. And jim crockett promotions as a whole because this thing was getting ready to pop and it was starting to be you know catching luxury to call it on fire and all these you know more talent was coming in at these times of fresh in everything up and it was just one of those deals. You felt this thing is percolating and inspection pop and just one of the things that was going on. All the wives were having babies all the all. The guys were buying houses and that would be start to come within the next year in business were yet on fire but you know it just was a family setting and you were achieving all these things together and you could feel it and it was a family atmosphere and you were drawing money together your lives were intertwined and it was just a it was a different feel of course now you know guys that worked for an individual company whether it's wwe or a w they all live all over the country.

There's a whole other group of guys working in marion. Ohio at the county fairgrounds coliseum. Guys like dusty rhodes where there dick slater and here when you're in pittsburgh working really long match. The other crew is in columbia south carolina. The mate of over there is magnum. Ta and buddy landale the main event on your show here in pittsburgh is ron garvin and tully blanchard at the time there the national heavyweight champion and the television champion. Did you ever preference which card you'd rather be on. I mean conventional wisdom would say well the one that pays the most duh but in terms of working in front of columbia south carolina fans working in front of pittsburgh fans have a preference fans have nothing to do with it but that ninety miles from charlotte bego had everything to do with your shopping. Ucar our twenty minutes. You were sitton in the doorway in columbia. That's the kind of stuff where you're in this for the long haul and you've been to some places already that had horrible. You know travel schedules. Which bid south and then you had pensacola. Which was a piece of cake. You knew the difference where you saw your booking. Even if pittsburgh did you know really good business for that time still you had to get onto planes. You had to go through to rent a car lines. You had to find building all that stuff probably had the first flight out the next morning there was just a lot more involved and i'm not complaining. That's what i signed up for. You know it wasn't a matter if our had three connections to even get you there on a plane it would've been outstanding because i'm living the dream and it's all kicking the in about that time figured out you know. Hey we're we're going all these major cities and you're the good position certainly don't bitch about the travel and it went. There's a big difference when you're twenty six and when you're forty six talk to me a little bit about you know your attitude towards wrestling in how maybe it changed because we've talked a little bit about big guys or time talents. Who probably could have performed on a bigger stage. A guy like bullet. Bob comes to mind. I mean he could have been a much bigger national star but he wanted to be close to home. And you're all pow mr stubb's he sort of felt the same way based on your testimony but you eventually have to make a decision. Do you know what i mean. Do you want to be a local guy. Do okay or do you really want to swing for the fences and try to see how far you can take this thing is that really. What motivates you to make that trip to pittsburgh scooting over to columbia if you didn't want to be in the main event and the biggest company in the world or the second biggest company in the world or as you're making your way to the biggest company in the world whichever one you happen to be working for if you don't want to be on last you don't wanna be figured in the event and if you don't want to have a bearing on the success of the company and you probably ought to find something else to do now keep in mind bob. Armstrong and the fuller's jimmy golden jerry. Stubbs all those guys had decided in their mind. You know i ach can make plus they had you know. Here's the key thing. Kyra had points set for jerry. Jim crockett promotions finds themselves with one of if not the biggest television opportunity in all of wrestling with this. Wcbs feed and man. You wanna talk about timing. You're you're coming right into the promotion right. Is there going national for lack of a better word. That you're timing could not have been any better. I feel like you're a hundred percent right because there was a group of talent and i wish i had the exact dates in front of me but i can remember the guy's now jim crockett all those things that you mentioned had been in the past a very successful company at had went through a dip around this time in business Business was down a little bit because it was a rejuvenating as far as the guys were bringing any in a dusty taken over the book and he was starting to have flair and the the people that he was fine and the people that dusty wanted to bring in. It felt like to me. You could just tell that. There was a line drawn in the sand between the wwf in jim. Crockett promotions and Jim crockett acquiring that television. It felt like okay. We're fixing to go to war. And now like i said i wished i had this the exact dates. But you're talking about of a sudden you had the midnight. Express the rock and roll express. Yet arn anderson buddy landale The garbage came aboard during that period. And you had and. I'm sure i'm missing some some guys but you had a pretty good chunk of talent and a couple a month period. Go to work for jim. Crockett and you could just feel it. Insensitive in the woods new to blood and and you just knew things were lining up and fiction interesting. How about this manny. Fernandez is going to defeat arn anderson by q. Around the seven minute and fifteen seconds mark. When only anderson helps aren't double team fernandez on the floor during the bout oli who joined the commentary team for the bout said he and arn were brothers. The story at the time was their cousins. Anyway after.

You and i ran through march of eighty five. But you're gonna start. April eighty five on april second in spartanburg south carolina at the memorial auditorium. It's a tv taping for worldwide and they ran a little promotion there where the first five hundred fans in attendance received a free t shirt new probably needed one of those. Because you're working double duty here. You're gonna team with buddy landale to take on same houston danny brown. Of course you guys are on the a side of that one. But then there's a dark match with you and manny fernandez and man you and manny our heating up in a hurry and you know the thing about that. Dark match served a lot of purposes you could announce it to the public as something that they could be sure they were gonna get in those days they got it and it would be considered a main event and you know may just getting there getting put in that spot it from a positioning. It made you look like oh okay. They are going to go with sky. And you know man. I clicked pretty pretty quickly and that became a thing for for a while. Yeah for a while indeed. The next day you're in raleigh at dorton arena and once again working with manny. You pick up the win there. The following day. You're off a rare off-day but on april fifth. You're once again. Working with manny fernandez. This time to a no contest in columbia south carolina. You're at township auditorium. We've spoken a little bit about dorton arena and how much i love the arena. In how cool it looks. But tony shirvani just said it was hot and it was a dump and it was measurable Did you have any favorite buildings in the crockett territory. A building in particular. Where you just knew. I like the town i like the arena. I like the people like the accommodations. Any of that. stick out. Well they usually go to were the ones that were close. You know charlotte obviously grange borough. All those that were close. Columbia was one that that i favored because of the way it was built. You know it was one of those arenas that you know it was like built almost straight up lack. The seats in the upper deck. Were like almost over the rain and that was a cool environment. Loved richmond because you know that was a big arena here for big shows and held a lot of people. Lot of lot of great buildings Acoustics were always a good thing if you were an arena. That had some really good acoustics and everything sounded loud and you know because the noise go straight up there was. There was a slight delay so when it was a full it was just a funky atmosphere. But you know some of the crock in those days especially when we first got their business was not the best yet so they would opt to go to smaller arenas especially for television and for me. I like to sweat anyway sweater. I'm one of those guys. That loves to sweat. When i wanna sweat but i can't stand it when i don't obey. You're one of those guys. Oh yeah so you know being on that. Tv and having a good sweat going it was just conducive. And and you know i think the fans even you know for those towns once they gotta sweat and they looked around and realized they were soaked. Dan hey what are you going to do about it. Let's go ahead and have a good time so it made for great atmosphere wanna mention Tv the next day april sixth year at the wcbs studios and It's interesting because this is the very first episode that is promoted by jim. Crockett promotions so as a reminder wrestling has been on. Tbs for a long time but april six thousand nine hundred five. This.

Tv you against keith. Larson and aren't obviously landau. Immediately compared to flare. But lando has. Jj dillon with him. What did you think of. Buddy landau here. I think buddy was a guy that that had unlimited talent. He had unlimited charisma. His deal with from the very beginning was he was a flare knockoff. And he knew it. The fans knew it but the fact that he stuck with it and was a lesser version of rick is what really got him seat. You know and buddy was a very polished performer. He really was He was one of those guys that that just got it And as you can see he's gonna make it competitive and fun to watch baga that should not be slamming buddy put that somewhere in the match where you figured it was just going to be an enhancement matching. Buddy just suddenly did the smart thing. He went well. Maybe this is not gonna end up the way. I thought it was and that in those days if you could do that with a guy that had talent but was there to enhance you but you suddenly gave him a little more than what he should have gotten say leader the fans there with it. That would have been very boring. If it would have just been straight buddy landale eight. Let me ask you here. Aren't you think it made sense to have to nature boys at the same time. Well it did. Because if they would've ever gotten to the angle paul and got to the deal. Buddy would have had incredible heat in the match with rick. You know the fact that he was an imposter never would admit it. But did everything exactly correct from coleman his hair you know to have an ahead full of good blonde hair you know and the ability to make matches competitive and make them fun to watch but still being very good at what he does his offense being effective they just the sad part is paul they never quite got to the angle but he just you know had his demons and buddy had his issues and he could not overcome them.
