"You ever heard of Dave Matthews? At this point in his career, 35 year old parnelli was ready to get into some more off road adventures and launched several business endeavors with longtime friend and businessman. They started vel's parnelli Jones Ford, a firestone tire distributor ship that open stores in 14 different states. Prunelli also cofounded American racing wheels. With friend art hail senior. The company now known as U.S. mags, custom wheels is one of the longest running producers of custom race car wheels for both vintage and modern cars in the United States. Owned by wheel pros. They own hinnigan. They own method wheels. Interesting. The biggest endeavor that Jones in militant started together was those parnelli Jones racing, founded in 1969 nice, the team was financially backed by firestone, like Nolan just set the team was considered to be a three car super team consisting of Al Unser senior. Joe Leonard and Mario Andretti, who I have seen in front of them. Similar to Parnell's own racing journey, the victories came quickly. Alan sir won two consecutive Indianapolis 500 for the team in 70 and 71, driving two Johnny lightning PJ colt slash Ford racers to victory. Unser also walked away with the 1970 USAC championship. Joe Leonard followed suit by winning the USAC championship in both 1971 and 72. The team would race and dominate many different racing series, including NHRA drag racing USAC championship dirt cars and off road racing. VPG racing also did something that parnelli Jones himself never attempted. They dominated the world of F one. In 1974, the team ambitiously built three bespoke Formula One cars. One of those cars was the VP J four chassis four slash zero zero two and was driven by Mario Andretti who have seen in his undermine. The team recruited the town of Formula One designer Maurice Philippe and engineer John Baldwin to assist in the initial mock up of the car. The Finnish car impressed the racing world, including lotus founder, Colin Chapman, who called it the car he wished he could have built. Man, Colin is just jocking this dude. That's the tallest airbox, I think I've ever seen on a Formula One car. This is something that Richard scarry would drive. What the hell is that? That's what I'm saying, dude. It's like a periscope. In 1975, Mario Andretti and the VP J four did well in several races, including fourth place at the ander strip Scandinavia raceway in the Swedish Grand Prix and 5th at the circuit Paul Ricard in the French Grand Prix. Andretti also led ten laps at the Spanish Grand Prix before ultimately placing beyond the podium in fourth. Throughout the 1970s, vel's parnelli Jones racing teams would also have an impact at Indy and made a strong run in the formula 5000 road racing series USAC championship dirt racing and NHRA funny car and top fuel drag racing. The name could use a little bit of work. It doesn't really roll off your tongue. Vel's parnelli Jones racing. I don't know. Seems kind of like a Ruth's Chris. Is it Ruth or does Chris belong to it's Ruth's Chris steakhouse? 'cause everyone's got a different steakhouse. Chris steakhouse. Is Chris a style of steak? Chris steakhouse was the original one and it burnt down. And then the wife started Ruth. Oh, Chris steakhouse. I like that. It's confusing. But it's endearing. Parnelli Jones has received numerous honors for his fantastic run as a race car driver and is a member of more than 20 racing halls of fame. I thought there was like three of them. These honors include the Indianapolis motor speedway Hall of Fame. The international motor sports Hall of Fame, the motor sports Hall of Fame of America. The national midget auto racing Hall of Fame, the national sprint car Hall of Fame. The West Coast car Hall of Fame, and the off road motor sports Hall of Fame. That's a lot of halls. Even after he retired, parnelli never steered too far from the track. In 1993, at 60 years old, parnelli found himself behind the wheel once again when he participated in a televised racing event called fast master. Starring Jeremy Clarkson. The ESPN series featured 50 retired drivers competing in races over the course of 6 weeks. Alongside parnelli were a number of NASCAR legends, including Bobby and Donnie Allison. Buddy baker. Harry Gant. Benny Parsons. David Pearson, who we need to talk about. And dick trickle. Parnelli did well in the three races he took part in and walked away with one first place win. "There's a lot of people out there who haven't won a Daytona 500. I never want to extend any chance. I never want to track championship. He must be pretty damn good. Fair point. And I think you're right. I think nepotism obviously comes into play when it comes to racing and guys getting rides, but the genetics have to come into play to actually do well eventually. I mean, Richard Petty gets a ride because he sleep petty's son, but that's not gonna be one of the 7 championships. Yeah, buddy baker. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. I mean, it's a long list. It's a very, very long list. So Austin Dillon steps up to win this race Jeff. But he wasn't the only guy who was outside the playoffs, came into this race and even went and stepped up. Eric Jones led 22 laps. We saw Justin Haley at the front. It was a gamble by the team, but he kept it up there for 8 laps afterward. He took a shot, Michael McDowell, Bubba Wallace, Chris busher, they all led laps, Harrison Burton, was also at the front. It was a good to see, I guess, when everything was on the line that it matters for these guys that they do step up. Yeah, I love to see step up moment. So if you go back and you look at one way I like to look at races and determine who ran well as you look at stage finishes. And if you look at the average finishes of the stages, you had a lot of guys that had step up moments and they brought, in my opinion, their best. On that day, and Eric Jones, he was out there driving his ass off and he had his hands full. And you could see he had his hands full, but he's like, I got it. You know, and he was just committed to doing whatever he had to do. I thought you just mentioned it nepotism. I thought Harrison Harrison, he had a really good day. He was in there mixing it up all day long, made a lot of aggressive moves to get himself there, came from the back a couple to three times, came from the back. He had a strong day, Justin Haley, you mentioned him. He got up there and he stayed up there. So I thought a lot of drivers that were in difficult situations, they brought their best, and that's great experience with them. Now, it's not as good of experience as it was for Austin Dillon. But it's great experience for them. And I think it's something that their teams can look at and say, okay, we collectively came into this event with the deck with the deck stacked against us with a tremendous amount of line and we put ourselves in position. I think that's, I think that's empowering for teams that didn't make the playoffs that because this week, when you go to Darlington, and it's Martin Truex ever experienced this. It's been 8 years. It's been 8 years since he's been out of the playoffs. It's going to be forgotten. We're not talking about you anymore. Sorry. And there's no other way to say this, but I mean Gibbs is going to shift resources. They have to. They have to, if they're going to be the smart about it, they got to take anything that they can do pit crews, that kind of stuff. Anything they can do. If there's something that they learned, and they don't have time to implement it on every car, it's going on those three. And by the way, if somebody doesn't make it through the first round, they get pushed aside too. That's just how it is. Right. And I don't blame a team for the smart play. There's millions at risk. When I was a driver and I got in that situation, one way or the other, I completely understood. When I could, I'm sitting there saying, I need this, I expect this. And then when it was the other way around and they came to me and said, hey, you got to give this? Hey, man. Got it. You got to do what you got to do. And we should have made a playoffs. It happens every day. It happens every day in every shop. The team that runs the best gets the most help, because that's when a decision has to be made. What allocation of resources are we going to put toward whatever it is. They don't have endless amount of money. And when you put resources to a Kevin Harvick and a Rodney Childers. And they deliver results. Where are the resources going? And then it puts pressure on the other team to say, hey, we can do this for these guys and they deliver how do you all got to find a way to do it? Happens every day. There's a decisions get made every single day in every shop across all areas. And not just not just cup raising it. Every race and it has teammates. Yeah, and like you said, those guys who came to Daytona and took their shot that showed the team. They've got something to work for maybe in that vein in the future. So as I mentioned, two critical moves by Austin Dillon, two critical calls for NASCAR. We'll start with the good one. I want to give them credit. They waited out this delay as we mentioned after the race got postponed from Saturday night. The race ended, I thought, as it should, though the winner remained the same. It did impact the grid. Truex would have gotten in if they call it on lap one 39 as opposed to Blaney. So I thought the competitive integrity was done at service here by ensuring that the race finished. 100%. And I think that, listen, if that race will have started at Sunday Night at 4 o'clock and we race for an hour and a half and then

"Please say yes to you. And radio. James, and of course those are the cadillacs. Yeah, my girlfriend, that's two words, by the way, girl, and friend on the label, if you're trying to look it up, and what a wonderful song it was. And of course, that too on Josie. 1957, and I got all western Navarro got co writer on that too. I mentioned that she got, she got writer's credit, a Gloria, and that's true, but the reality is that it was Leon Renee who wrote Gloria and I've never been entirely certain why there was any action on that. You remember Leon Rene, he wrote when the swallows come back to have astronaut. And all sorts of other wonderful things too, and had exclusive a record label. And in fact, the very first release of Gloria was 1946 on exclusive. And it was a pop song. I think buddy baker was a musical director with bob Hayward doing the vocal and it had violins and it did nothing, died. And Leon Rene was obviously not going to let that go. And so what they did was they created a promotion in 1946. He got together with a jock from KFW to be in Los Angeles. This is much pre rock and roll. Again, 46. And sponsored a contest to search for a girl who typified Gloria and it was heavily public relation gimmicky. And no one ever heard about the winner, at least not that not that I know. And meantime, Johnny Moore's three blazers released on exclusive, again. And then Charles Brown. Yeah, released it, which some say is the definitive version of the Leon Rene treatment of it. The mills brothers did it, and ray Anthony did it. And on buddy Clark, you remember buddy Clark, backed by the modern eras, I'll have you know. And Tommy Dorsey and ray Anthony's version actually got a lot of airplane. And the mills brothers had a hit with it. Well, in 54, here come the cadillacs. And here comes ester Navarro, who initially on the release, there's no writer's credit at all, because I guess she wasn't that bold at that point. She kind of dumbed it down and made sure after a while that she became the writer. And it was a Cadillac's first release on jubilee. And their version, though, has become the de facto standard for everybody who sung it after of it. In fact, it's probably true that all the doo wop groups that sang it never heard any of the earlier versions with the correct lyrics from the 40s, but they certainly heard the cadillacs and, of course, in 1959, it was on the crazy cadillacs LP. All right, so enough of that history. Let's talk to Scotty in east Chicago who requested it. Thanks, Scotty. Yeah, router. That was the sound of every new web group got their start on. Yes. Absolutely. And I bet you none of them knew that it was the song from 1946. No, we sure did. We just started with Esther Navarro some. Yeah. Grab it. You should say she written speedo. That was the one to make the money. I did. She did she got the writer's credit, and she did. I missed her. Well, he did. But he's not credited. Esther. Well, you know, everybody was doing that back in the day. Of course they were. I don't know. I wanted to ask you, how old was Adam weave that when he died? I think he was like 78, 79. No, well, I know he was, he was born in the third. I don't know what he was in his 80s. I thought he was about 84, so I remember him. I think he was born in 35, and I guess that would make you in your 80s now. I'm getting older than I realized. So I think he was born. And I thought he was lower than me. I wasn't sure. Well, he would be because he was born in 35. So I guess. I guess that would make him, oh my God, 87. Yeah, now you're talking more like it. Oh no, that's not even possible, is it? It just doesn't care. You take your chip that they're policemen. They say he probably going to be pale ass on the waist down. And he better get. He just had a birthday. He just turned 32. Yesterday, one day this week. And he was on the forest 5 or 6 years. Oh, sad. But he's trying to break up the fight between he should have just went to sad and called back up. But he was off duty, you know, he wasn't on duty. No, and unfortunately, as soon as anyone knew he was a cop, I agree with detective chuck that both sides. Yeah, somebody, somebody shot him, you know, came out the car and shot them all in the back and all. That's so sad. And yeah, and that young kid at the highland park parade is going to be paralyzed for like, he's getting worse if they say. It's just horrible what's going on. It is. Oh, I want to ask you one thing. Okay, you take the check what you're about to balance Valentine's. The valentinos, not the valleys, okay. Right? Yes, and Cecil and everybody else. Who sees a marriage? I know Mary Sam Cooke's wife. Mary wells. I couldn't think of anything. You know what you're about to call X two. They were one of the best dancing groups you ever want to see. Absolutely. They were choreographed. Yes. Oh man, I mean, they would come out with some damn with tuxes on. I mean, they could dance all over the stage. Yes. We've just made that. And we were really good. And just so underrated. 'cause he's still living, he dad, didn't he? Oh God, Bobby, I'm trying to, I think that he does. I know, you know, he looked at me when he got Barbara. Sam cliff's wife. Exactly. I think he died in 2014, and he was in tarzana in California in the valley. He was talented, but he was kind of cocky, cute. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he would step on his chef. He thought he was he thought he was Jackie Wilson or somebody, you know. He thought he was answering what he wasn't. Yeah, he believed it so much. He was a terrible kid top player now. Yeah, and you know he had hitch into the 80s. Right, he did that that crossing a 110th street. Right. And if you think about it, I mean, he did a lot of it. Yes, I agree. Yes, do we have to get about you? And you name it. He acquired a few. Yeah, like I said, if you think you're lonely now, I was like that. But actually, I was married well, I've been trying to beat my head against the wall. I knew one of them was marriage to a singer, but I couldn't think who it was. Yes, he's the one that can marry wells. And she was married to a singer, a musician before him, a guy who worked for Barry Gordy, and that was Herman Griffith of the rayber voices, so I don't remember that. Well, you know, she was the queen of Motown. At the time. And I don't know what it was about. Now, when she some kind of Jack Wilson, I don't say they were cousins. Mary wells?

"The French announcer was so crazy about Ava Gardner that a guy that everybody thinks has it all together or had it all together. Tried to commit suicide twice over her. Once with pills and once with turning up the gas in his oven and leaving his head in the oven and as a result it really did a number on his vocal cords and he couldn't sing for a while. I mean, Frank would fire bullets into the pillows in his room to make believe he was killing himself. So Ava Gardner would come by and take care of him. Crazy. And in a book I read about Ava Gardner. She said that they had the best search life. But as soon as the sex ended and Frank was wandering to the bathroom, they would have often the most magnificent fights. And that would ruin the night. But as she got older and she go to a restaurant owned by Frank's partner, jilly Rizzo, there was a big cardboard cut out of Frank at the door. And every time she came in, she'd walk in and scratch the face of Frank on the cardboard and say, I miss my guy. So as much as they thought, it was some real love there. Let's get back to Mickey, the coxswain Rooney. Because that's why this Betty Jane baker, that was the second wife. She's from Alabama. She was 17, she came on the miss Alabama pageant. And she went on to represent a state in the Miss America competition. That same year she beats Mickey. They get married. They have two children Mickey Rooney junior and Timmy Rooney, then they split up in 1949. And Betty Jane wasn't single long, was 8, 8 days after her divorce became final. She went to songwriter and the film composer buddy baker, and the two of them were together until 1958. By that time, you know, she changed her name to Betty Jane baker in Shenzhen. She enjoyed a successful career in music as a session singer. And she did background vocals for French. And Elvis Presley Sam Cooke, Bobby Darren, and Phil Spector. Her third and final marriage in 1961 was to the jazz guitarist Barney castle. And she dies in 2002. Okay, that doesn't seem like a big deal..

"Going to go back to two cases. If I go back to Richard Petty, Bobby and Donnie Allison buddy baker, kale Yarborough, David Pearson. Let me throw Daryl Waltrip in there. They hated Daryl. Hated Daryl because Daryl was the newcomer. He comes in with a new team with that Dai guard team. And his second or third year, whatever. And he starts winning races and running door to door with him and running his mouth. This is where jobs came from. And but you're not supposed to do that. Yeah, yeah. You're not supposed to do that, okay? Fast forward to a kid named Jeff Gordon, who jumps out in the middle of Earnhardt and rusty and all those guests? No, you're not supposed to do that. Fans didn't appreciate that. Fans did not appreciate Jeff Gordon. The established fans didn't appreciate that. And some of the established drivers didn't appreciate that. You know what I mean? So I think you've had these scenarios at different times. I think the car is part of that process this time. It is kind of sped that process up. You know what I mean? Last year we went and I had this process, this problem with Ross Chastain. Because they don't believe that he would have been up there running with these guys like this. But this car, all of a sudden, boom. He's right in the mix. He's in the middle of him. So I think it's timing, listen, we talk about this sport and it does this. It's just cyclical. You know what I mean? What happened in 64 was going to happen again in 78 and this is going to happen again in 95. I mean, it's just, that's the way it goes. You know? And I think we're just in that phase where, yeah, the established guys, and the establishment, doesn't like he's got two marks against him, kind of like Daryl. New team, new driver. You know what I mean? He shouldn't be running with Gibbs. He shouldn't be running with Hendrick. He shouldn't be running with Penske. What's he doing up there? Somebody needs a knocking back to the back. And he just keeps hammering and keeps going. And listen, and his teammate, Daniel Suarez has done the same stuff. He's layered racism run up front. They've had some terrible luck, but here's two teams that are going to be a factor. We can't wake out. Yeah, I mean, that's why this is a wrinkle with this car, because as you say, track house has really emerged, I think you could say probably a first to your team this year. Yeah. And that's the wrinkle that makes different from when Logano came on the scene in the mid 2010s and then becomes the championship. Winner in 2018 and at that point, it was like true X and other guys were kind of pushing back on Logano because they didn't like the fact that he was doing well. But they were still doing well. Now it's like, hey, this new guy, not only is he doing well, he's outrunning us and that is like another. And they're the different together. And you've got to look at Truex and you've got to look at Kevin and you got to look at those guys. It's just a fact, and I know people hate it when I say it. And listen, if you're 40 plus, you're on the backside. Used to it was when you got to 50, you were on the backside, you know what I mean? But in this day and time, when 40 plus, you're looking at the end. And you're looking at kids, this is, I hate to say it, but if you want to see how it turns out, it's kind of like cars three. We're the next gen and the young ones end up winning in the old group retire. Sorry, that's the way it is. So just it's animated. If you want to watch it in animation, I love it. So kind of threw me with the piston cup reference there. Let me gather my thoughts. Well, first, let's just touch on Truex really quick, because you mentioned it. He was asked, I believe by bob poker, this past weekend, if he's decided on next year, because he's in a contract year and it sounds like, as he told bob, he's really wrestling with this. You mentioned 40 plus the Truex just crossed that threshold and is now in his 40s. And it sounds like he's really, really conflicted about whether he wants to keep racing. What do you think? I mean, do you have any thoughts on that? No, no. No insight. But I'll say this. And I've said this to you and I've said this a million times. I hate when drivers retire. Or forced to retire. I hate it. Because Truex, it's all everyone to be. You don't want to be a clam fisherman. You know what I mean? He wanted to be a race car driver. Right. Now we have a 40 plus year old boy. Because that dream of driving a race car is still that little boy straight. Childhood dream. Yeah. That's your child. And you get to do it for 40 years. Think about it. You get to do it until you're in your early 40s, mid 40s. And you get to that point where you say, I'm just going to put that dream in a box. You know, I don't get to do that anymore. You know? And you're very blessed because you got the race for that long. But at the same time, that's a part of who Martin Truex is. That is a part of, just like his DNA is to be a nice guy. But having a race car. So but I will say this also. That once you start thinking, you better start getting. It's almost too late. At that point, it's time to get out. You know what I mean? If it crosses your mind, it's time because you just got beat. You just got beat, because you're out there riding around, and you're getting passed by Ross Chastain, and you're thinking, I don't have to put up with this. Yeah. I could get out. I don't have to. I've got my championship. That's right. And when that starts clicking in your head, no matter no matter what you do. You know, I said it when I quit. And it's always you've seen it. Gaz retire and then come back for two more races or come back and don't come back dude. Don't come back. You know what I mean? Because you've already made up your mind. And you've already stepped the game. This is not driving a cup car. It's not a part time job. It's a full-time job. And that means 360 five, 24/7 to be focused and dedicated when something else enters that. I think it's done. That's just my problem. You can't just reboot not compared to spirit and juices and say, I don't think you can..

"Then. Anyway, Seagrave's team would start the rear engine using compressed air to get it to turn over. Then a mechanical friction clutch would roar the front motor to life and a dog clutch would link them together in preparation of flying down the beach. Wow, so they used the clutch from the front from the rear engine to start the front engine. That's it. It was like a push start. That's pretty cool. The four ton beast managed two runs before calling it a day. The first run was clocked at 200.608 mph and 207.015 mph on the second. And that's the end of the show. Thanks for listening. Seagrave then decided that driving on land was too easy. So he commissioned a highly customized racing boat to be built and broke the 100 mph barrier on the water. And that felt like a. As impressive as these accomplishments were. In many ways, they were the easy button of making it into the history books. I don't think it was that easy though. Yeah, it seems really hard. You got to build a whole big car. To go beyond custom built vehicles and into mass production was an undertaking of an entirely different scale, which may be why it took decades longer for the first car to be built on an assembly line to crack 200 mph. Breaking 200 mph is not a cakewalk, no matter what anyone tells you. Don't believe them, okay? There's a reason why Seagrave chose Daytona Beach. It was flat and firm. And there wasn't anything to crash into besides the oat chin or a whale. Or a bikini. Or volleyball net. Things get a little more complicated on a race track, especially an oval one. Now since the early days of NASCAR speeds crept north of a 100 mph, then one 50 for decades, this car tech improved, race cars, well, they got faster. Better cams better heads, better flow, meant better horsepower and better speeds, but it wasn't until 1970 that a burly NASCAR beast was able to break the 200 mph barrier. Buddy baker behind the wheel of a very customized and later band 1969 charger Daytona brought the stock car to 200 mph, a Talladega super speedway. The bright blue Billy badass beast featured a 575 horsepower four 26 Hemi under the hood with a Holly dominator carburetor and a full aero package that resulted in a .29 drag coefficient. That's really good for the time. Well, NASCAR's used to be actual stock cars by 1969. They were far from their factory made counterparts. Dude, I bet this guy sold a lot of Holly carbs. No one, is this your dream car? Yeah, that's definitely top three dream car. Yeah. You know, I'm partial to the Weber carbs, so. Well, it's your dynasty. It's my dynasty carbs and grills. Carbs and grills. That's your new side channel. Where you smoke cigars and drink bourbon and talk about watches. I mean, Gavin Newsom. "And neither one of us knew one to nascar. Said twenty-seven really frigging cool baby. I wanna daytona steve tone. It was it was it was There's a lot of stress there was there was a lot of speed rate. Oh steve was awesome feeling. Because you know the biggest thing was was. You wanna want a cup race what you wanted to do. But yeah the the the. There's no describing the trenton when you win unless you did it. You know whether it's orange county whether it's martinsville whether it's thompson connecticut. Man just feels good because you warn and that's what you did. He just wanted to win now today. It's still not quite as exciting to those drivers. But i don't think they appreciate it. I remember mark martin always saying you never know when you're gonna win again it'd be your last one and mark right martin. Good good guy. Good memory from markets. Seeing some stuff like that you go talladega few weeks later. And you've got bill elliott. Rub behind you teammate. Was bill a teammate. At that point. Bill is a good teammate wreck or was he just somebody else that you had to beat to the line in that race. All i put some dirty moves on the win blocked him. Bill was very good. At speedway and talladega is different. You could drive talladega lot. You could drive a freer car at talladega than you could daytona daytona. You had a hand a little bit better talladega. You could drive in and just use more of the race track card actually run faster but even at the lifting told a wide open and which would naturally take its course up track but yeah i had to do a little cut here old him off got second i think he got third or fourth of daytona. I don't even remember but i I want to pretty bad. It was you know you saw is still see a lot of the guys. I will tell you this alert from two of the best buddy baker told me if you see a seghal follow it and bobby allison told me that the key to daytona kita tolliday is never lift off the throttle but dry keep driving the car and we went down there.

It and i never been in the time when i was a proctor and and we did quite a bit of nice to have to handle the catering. at at the nascar we proctor and gamble. We had As many as three cars one time yeah. We had the folger's machine with tim richmond. We had there a waltrip with the tide. A car and And so my gosh In the the car buddy baker in the crisco car and I know i'm pulling out. You know some classic names But you know we used to go We used to go to any number of the particularly the big tracks. The you know we were based based in charlotte but it was tremendous fun and Had i guess the i guess the biggest the best old school track. I got to go to was darlington off the southern five hundred which was unbelievable. That was a that was an experience. The kind of a concrete bowl of In the country The track too tough to tame. Though it'll be we'll i'll tune in. We'll watch check it out. I i always like a. It's kind of like a grateful dead concert but they got cars instead of me as everywhere telling their wares and you know So it's all good enjoy. Have a great weekend. Everybody and good luck. Everybody up in canada. In fact if i wasn't here i'd probably be up at woodbine this weekend but Enjoy the rate because we get closer to the scout and we'll start narrowing down on those horses to watch for the first part of ember hammer. Thanks rick camberley everybody. Thanks for the The boost and the hell that Kentucky downs it was a just a wonderful kind of cap to the end of the summer. I really enjoyed it. Mccamley everybody away. They go on your twitter machine. We've got about forty five minutes to fill out and we're going to hear from scully now and then day. Granny and nicole russo. Before we wrap today in the coal. Give us a opening week. I four sessions report from keeneland and a talk to james. I get some get some scully action. And i don't think with james there. No i'm here who you are. They're quite good morning. Thanks for having me on. I want to Just i saw just congratulate they. Congratulations for the jim mckay award. That was well deserved and I was very happy to see you win. It could be at the breeders cup at del mar. Which could be there for the dinner but happy to see you Were recognized for all your work. You do a great job. James thank you thank you really appreciate it and yeah i've i'm just get right in with some handicapping opinions this weekend. i'll call start right at churchill. Got the downs after dark program. Five stay grades his. I'll jump around in a couple of spots. But i will start with the open mind which is the first of the stakes and said -sconsin and belts the one or both going to take a lot of money on their. I've i've been impressed by eight. No elmer's last two races and To starts back at churchill's ran a really big race or she dot dictated terms from the start. One going away got one hundred percent speedy permits last time in that honorable myth. I thought that was a good third that day. She really fought hard for the wire. Finishing behind dolts the one in lake avenue came back to run second in the bowery now so Obviously monday call could potentially foil my plans but one thing about this monday call is in her. Last three starts to. Racism lasted six furlong. She hasn't been on the lead. She's been getting e pace ratings in the eighties Eight noel mercy been running a lot quicker and start. She gets up there and clear. She's got a chance to feel their rates wire-to-wire. Ooh that's that's that's a dangle on it and And then i'll move on. You know they got back to back. Maiden races I've got an opinion in the second one race number bob. I like the one horse surfer to from dallas durr now. This curling colt Break from the rail and his debut on august third at colonial downs. show goodspeed. that day held well to be a clear second This is the second star salt dale stewart saratoga win with a major maiden Second time out there This is a son of business who a grade one. Winning sprinter. A sister to bulletin. Who won the breeders cup. Juvenile turf sprint wada. Speed in that female family sir do show goodspeed debut. I like them. Wire-to-wire from the rail with corey winery. He's six to one to one in the fifth grade. Nice i am. I'm anxious to to dig into this There's some interesting pedigrees in off. And i'll just you know that that's a really good I mean there's a lot of work gonna take Money in that field even raise four really I mean you've gotta amos source that full of search results You got a star lineman. Who's a full of bonnie south You know so. You've got a couple of really well bred horses in that race. She got this general strike who Who dan i fall from the dam and chief with champ sister to champion two year old filly. Jay walk so Really good back toback maiden races on the car. Good made racist today as well as church announced. Let's get into the stakes sequence okay and then in in the You know in the third society. I think it's going to be tough to beat. Bango i mean. Obviously he's six winston churchill undefeated. I mean five wins at the distance. i do think that if if anybody is going to beat i'm intrigued by the derby day Another type that appears to be like really moving forward for farm and check this son. I like pipes that are getting good and Stepping up in class and Might not be good enough to beat Bango but derby dates and kind of all include multi tickets steve. I'm in pocahontas. I thought that was really. You know an on on some pick four. Pick pop tickets. I'm just gonna push the whole button in that race. I thought it was most competitive rate..

"When hendrick motorsports called to give him a ride in nineteen eighty seven. Jimmy hung up on buddy. I'm like to have seen buddies face when that happened. And jimmy said yeah right if your buddy baker. I'm the president of the united states. Now there is a thought for you. President jamie spencer. That one is out of my magic. That would make for one heck of a movie buddy called back and jimmy had his first cup ride and he had some halfway decent runs and he is on his way in west cup now. Just a few races lighter. The bush series heads to louisville kentucky. He and robert pressley get together in the next thing jimmy knows. He's penalized a couple of laps by nascar and according to jimmy rather than serve the penalty he just parked himself. He's got a cup race. The next day in michigan for buddy baker. So he's going to go ahead and get early start. North by beshir. Didn't change his attitude. Did it no. And he ain't happy. And he unleashes the mother of all tirade and according to legend. He's out on pit road flipping off tower with both and from what jamie said brian. France was calling the race nascar. Okay all right. Jimmy denies flipping the bird. That's what he told us. I wasn't there. I don't know. But anytime i've ever heard about this incident. The bird story is told. So the fact is though jimmy spencer was spun out and half turned over. Well i liked the vision up jimmy spencer flipping off brian france. Now ricky knows loves. I do that over the last few years. There are a lot of competitors who like to flip pride friends. "Because i feel like that. I don't want that to come off like an insult but but right you. You've just done a great job reinventing yourself. What about these roles and this chapter of your life and doing tv in these projects. Why does it work for you. Why has all of this panned out well for you. You know. I think for two reasons number one. I have to credit mom. Mom was very inquisitive person. And i say this all the time she just constantly wanted to learn and she constantly wanted us to be learning about myself and my three sisters and like we would go to michigan and early seventies. After they opened the racetrack. We would drive to michigan. An old station wagon. My dad would be at the race track practice in and we will go to the henry ford museum. We spend two days at the henry ford museum just walking around and seeing things and learning things so i think that desire to learn and that desire to ask questions and to try to find out and to move. That needle was instilled with me from my mom. I think the other thing that has helped me is. I'm a fan of the sport. I'm a i've been a fan since i was a little boy man and like i said when we started this just to be back in the garage it just to hear a race car run to smell that gasoline. You know what i mean to the sights. The sounds the fans debt. I mean that's just part of you know. And that's part of what i wanna be around so when i was a little boy in an nf. Said told the story many times. When i would go to sleep. When i was five six seven years old i dreamed about setina racecar hanging onto a steering wheel and beaten richard petty beaten david pearson and beaten buddy baker and kelly. Auburn those gas. I didn't dream about doing commercials for coca cola. I didn't dream about setina at a table and signing autographs. I didn't dream about being interviewed on..

Would you throw it back to the beast Arcane have it's will with i'd throw it back to the east and let whoever arcane is his will because i keep project so far beyond recommend these first six issues because the best part of these first six issues was issued five and it wasn't even about animal Was issues in. That was a wasted issue. That was my least favorite comic book again because she was the biggest issue. And my god. I remember reading that like candidates flipping through the pages because as we already know about buddy baker in who he is as a man. We don't need this exposition through a movie. That is watching an iphone because like literally the first three issues was talking about that..

Old daughter maxine. You win his fortune. When his four year old daughter maxine suddenly starts exhibiting her own disturbing powers but he begins an odyssey that will lead him to the root of his and maxine powers into the heart of the red. The journey will shake buddy to the core. Is it calls into question. All he has ever known about himself actual origin of his powers and his true destiny now before we get too far into the shenanigans of animal. Man it's that time again guys. I'm gonna throw it on over to the comic wiz for his comic quiz takeover. J. b. j. jv so It's interesting because last week. We did. Sean and mike one on one montesano in this week. Doing tom and josh means next week. The winners have to go at dead. Doing like a round robin now. It's funny. I tried to make it a little more diverse. Speak to so. I'm really looking forward to how you go about this case to see what you're gonna pull out. Yeah we're gonna start with a true false so you've got a fifty fifty chance here like this into so hit. The license plate number of ellen's yellow car is t- four him for in two or false at the hard false. I'm going to say. I really don't know so i'm just gonna say true okay so it looks like by a wide lead. We're taking tom. I really yeah this. No license plate number. They don't even have it on the which issue which issue i think it's when she's driving to the gas station st issue with their car. Josh yeah no. I'm looking at one right now. And there's definitely no license plate. On that i will pull up the page for user shit. I'm callin shenanigans on this quiz. You're fired john. I can't wait the his image up and send it to you right so we're off to a gracious leader in a sore loser right now with the losing. Wanna see where. This license plate is confused with that country in this first six issues for door. I found it. You're right same issue. Okay this that's how inconsistent. This shit is same issue like four pages later after there was no license plate number. There's random license plate number. Save it for the ring you to question number two is just a straight answer for. What is the adorable nickname. The buddy sa- lovingly gives to maxine squirt. Little win out buddy. Oh shit he said buddy. And i thought cliff is on. Is clifton buddy. You think i pay attention names dude. That's one of the hardest things for me too. I was calling a ellen. Mo for the longest time like my notes all call her obviously answer the wrong thing and then earned the right thing from josh. So we'll get one either way and now. This one took a little creativity to find a good answer in the book but it can mimic the abilities of any animal by mystical access to the more for genetic filled created by all living creatures known as the red what creatures has fingerprints so indistinguishable from humans that they have an occasion been confused at crime scene. Holy shit what the issue is that. We had to like break. That dan we're following along with comic was question. Number three is always the one. That's bad shit crazy..

I've broken Buddy Baker Watch to the garage. Richard Petty wins the Daytona 500. The first man I ever wanted. Four times a 2nd 1974 NASCAR Grand National Championship stock car races history. The winner of the 16th annual Daytona 500 is Richard Petty. He drove the whole running away in his red and blue STP special. Cale Yarborough did it in 1983 and 84. They come to strike. It will be Cale Yarborough. The Winter Bill Elliott will finish second horrible pulling away. Here comes the charge from Turn four. Can anybody do anything? Kale is gone. He'll win the day. 500 with the battle is for second right now, As Earnhardt squeezes past Darrell Waltrip in Sterling Marlin accomplished the feat in 1994 and 95. Sterling's got a car length and a half trying to put a dream behind him. He will win his first Winston Cup race. He tried since 1976 and Sterling Marlin has won the Daytona 500 his first Winston Cup victory. Earnhardt, two car lengths behind here They come to the checkered flag late Daytona 500 Sterling Marlin in command. Sterling Marlin will take the middle groove right through the trial. Will Earnhardt is not close enough to make a move. Sterling Marlin is a repeat winner of the Daytona 500. But in 2021 Denny Hamlin has the opportunity to put himself in a class of his own. Win the Daytona 500 for the third year in a row and become the first driver in NASCAR history to do so. Hamlet's chances are strong the last two seasons. He's proven he still got what it takes to win. Scoring six wins in 2019 and seven in 2020 win would also give him his fourth Daytona 500 victory. In total, He would tie Cale Yarborough with that number and would trail only Richard Petty, who won the Great American race a record seven times. I'm the odd man out there. I don't belong I don't belong with any of those guys names those air Legends of our sport, obviously, Hall of Famers and they just lose the guys that you learn from. I'm just a student. Those guys the teachers, whether they root for card number 11 or not. NASCAR fans will be waiting to see if Denny Hamlin can accomplish something No one else has with a third consecutive Daytona 500 victories. Marines Kurt Becker, and he's right. "buddy baker" Discussed on Racing Virginia Podcast

"Guy other than daytona and talladega can't just hit the set up and run up front with the big boys like he used to because such little show many many things as little little mall things that caused the hell out of money but last year in twenty twenty okay you know if you did it on purpose or or whether happened virality butt lift social media by hand. Lean a snake every and it was like every cup guy Driver was talking about you. Every team was talking about you. The media was talking about you. Think nascar even put a A deal where where would ward burton stack up with. Today's drivers may or damn. Y'all need to get a history last night. Didn't know all you're pretty popular for that one. That initial snake video. What what what you put that on put on twitter just just thought it would be cool and didn't know how how people would react to it. Well so i probably got one sponsor hats on that support. Their conservation or jab. Jason crossroad apart. That's one and all of that started but to. Hey dad you can get you can get people that show taught us some exposure if you do social media so i don't know how to post it out now like i guess yes but man my when i was a kid you know stating out. No there was nothing else to do. I mean what cell phone. No there wasn't twenty two while cartoon network so by early morning. I was in ridge and you know. Nobody would taught me to be scared of snakes when i would about seven. I had a pet six foot. Black snake caught ninety. Where you know. I could find him about every time up onto the house and I took him in the house. And we'll show mom and everybody scattered all right. What the rams are like what that would my first impression. That people petrified. There's little critter. Don't have legs so i don't know you know i've done it a couple of town when i run across see snakes and i'm trying to hold a cell phone your show on snakes and what kind of snake it is and then eight my it. It hit my finger on your course that makes me laugh but hey man i'm getting right Go the everglades some and Learn about these species that's actually destroying the ecosystem and some of that is pythons and and the crown or so i'll get in the middle of that There's some just promise me that you'll you'll put a photo or video of one of those on on your twitter account and we will. We will support that wholeheartedly. Our be some of my we. We've learned a lot about you today. We're going to ask you a couple of our racing. Virginia rapid fire questions. And you just say the first thing that comes into your mind or the best option of the to ward. What is your favorite food. Ohio may what is your favorite non racing sport roy dogs or we know this one already outside or inside And we already know this to. What is your favorite race. Track in. All of virginia martinsville barnes. Alright we like we like martinsville here too and What in this doesn't have to be one you race. It could be one predator say wrecks. We're matters all. Yeah that's all right. I hear you might be able to redeem yourself here What your favorite race of all time. Now this could have been one that you watched raced in or or otherwise competed him. My dad used to take us to rock in a little camper and sale and watch Ero- bobby allison buddy baker day with shenault. Racial got a lot of fun memories hanging. We'll family and watching all the watching the right fan Party like you know course at a wiki. Well i got one more question before we let you go with jeb into the colleague racing number ten nutrient solutions chevrolet camaro. What is your thought on how his season will go. What's your prediction. Well i think the biggest thing is you know. Jeff has been working so hard for all these years shad fine partner in china sign car. I know still doing that right now today. We see jeb. Got to get some of that. Stress offered them and concentrate on one thing when he gets track. And that's obviously taken carrier partners but focus on the racetrack I think jeb would be great. I think is quicker. Jim and get and winter circle and get that monkey off the back because he's come so close particularly last year three or four times that wash at this stage Russian a year. So you know hoping that that will come on pretty quick but Jabber do great You know. I think he's still a little bit disadvantage because there's a lot of rights tracks that the others. The competitors have ran many times and right now today you can't practice so i mean if you could just go out and run channel apps. I mean whether it's a vegas or california rock and keep on name and all that would make a huge difference. So he's he's gotta be To really more to can figure out what he's got honoring figure out the lines and that'll come. Quick to but it is at a distinct disadvantage. I'm not gonna crack that. I stayed in each need to raise at new tracks. He's going to he just needs to Hank agree or don't put a lot of pressure on yourself race nod rush what we know. You're proud of jab. We're proud of him. In fact we have the same feeling you do. He is one of the hardest workers. You'll never find like you said. When he got the opportunity you never find a young driver like him that will work as hard as he does to go out and get a sponsor and to go out and try to satisfy them and also make the the race teams happy so we promote him left and right here we loved you have jeb is a friend of the show. We had him on a couple of times and just phenomenal stuff and today as well we we are to have you on the show. You are race in virginia. Royalty and i would say welcome to the race in virginia family. But you probably should be saying that St as absolutely well thank you all and thank you for your time or particularly what jeff. I'm most.
