And it bears pointing out that as great as mahomes was in last night's Super Bowl, the best player on the field was Jalen hurts. He had the most rushing touchdowns in Super Bowl history and accounted for all, but 43 affiliates 417 yards of offense, Patrick. From start to finish, he had a great football game, and I threw the ball in some tight windows, he threw the ball deep. He ran the ball when his team needed him to run the football. And obviously the Russian touchdowns. I mean, he played almost perfect football game. And so it took everything that we had to win that football game, and he's going to be a guy that I'm going to play against so a lot of times the rest of my career. He's always being these big games. Speaking of big games, mahomes offensive coordinator Eric B enemy has been in plenty of them. The Washington commanders reportedly trying to nail down an interview with him and Greg Roman, the former offensive coordinator of the ravens. You have a preference Dimitri? I'd love to see Eric the enemy here. I'm just wondering he isn't his goal head coach somewhere. First of all, he should have been a head coach probably like 5 years ago. But I would say Greg Roman is a better fit, even though I think Vietnamese is a better coach. I think Greg Roman might be a better fit for Ron Rivera said he wants to run the ball like a two to one margin definitely that fits the bill based on what we've seen from the ravens in the last four years. I'm sorry to say that the pessimist won that round but it wasn't a slam dunk. Actually the mid's were over halfway to their goal by halftime or at least halfway to the goal i'd set out there for them by halftime but houston made the necessary adjustments to keep them just under two hundred yards and by the way that was only because manner got sacked on third down in that last series at the mid ted altogether. There are thirty five of you. Who correctly figured the offense would come up short and they were eight optimus out there including me who figured they could get the job done but maybe they'll have better success running the ball against central florida this weekend. Texas like is a one hundred percent of women's issue but i think it's important for men to speak up because it does affect them in a way you know like i very much this weird come to jesus moment where like it was kind of up in the air whether or not we were going to have an abortion and i came to a level of acceptance where whereas was like okay. I'm i'll be a dad. Like i i can like. I felt this like tom. And then you know. She said we're not going to have. And i said oh okay and you know it. Kinda something shifted me you know and i i do think i you know i see you as a father and i'm like that is the coolest thing in the world and especially you know like looking at at your age and everything you've accomplished gone through you know like you didn't have kids young. You've had jovan bucknell older and you have so much more to give them in your years that you've been on earth rather than you would have if you were younger and you know i i would like to have kids and a family one. I'm fully prepared. And i would argue that within the decade no line. Maybe it won't happen maybe it will. We've already talked about it. And she definitely doesn't want to have kids until you know. She's kind of indoor thirties. A bit and not for me is is a sigh of relief. Because you know again in my past relationship it was. I want this by this time. This the clock is ticking. And i'm like. Oh god you watch you know and fuck that yeah that sucks taking clogging angle got suckling. This that kind of pressure so fucked w you should never have a kid unless you like really wanna kid like that. That's when your kid this thing of like bringing a kid into the world when you're when that's not what you put a tie on it you you started painting yourself into a corner. Where if i don't ever everything done by then you know the last thing i want to do is to not be able to dedicate myself entirely to my family and i know right now. I can't do that. You know and i know that i have a lot of things i want to accomplish and at the same time i wanna be able to take care of my family monetarily. In right now i can. I'm fortunate i'm a in a position where i can very well take care of myself but i don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars that i'll have to put towards my child in their education and everything like that. Now you need. it's fucking expensive. Have it gets his fucking expensive. And i like i don't care like like i. You have to cross this abyss. It's truly in like sometimes it magical circles. They talk about this thing crossing the abyss and there's a lot of different definitions but one of the abyss is you have to cross is the abyss of the of just selfishness. And you might not want to admit your people might not want to admit they're fucking selfish but when you have a kid you it's like you see like us. The selfishness becomes like as clear as is like mud on a spotlight. And that you just see. It's like vivid I don't know if i'll ever get rid of my lung and selfishness but the but the crossing the abyss part is like you have to start letting go of all the self-centeredness that you can like like you have to just really figure out a way to jettison that shit or you're going to be waking up at night. Gradient teeth feeling regret. You know like god you know. If i didn't have fucking kids. I could be on the couch blowing rails academy and playing god a war on like which is not in the. It's this weird collision of worlds of like letting go and acceptance at the same time and the balance between the two. You know and i i'd you know last night we ordered soup dumplings and watched capturing the friedman's and it's like i don't know if i if i had a kid you know no no you can't. That's the thing like you like you are. you're like we. We've gone out to eat this week. We're not twice. The first time we went out to eat ended up in the emergency room because forest has allergies and my and like i ended up like making. I got an ice cream maker. Made a big vat of ice cream but didn't cook the eggs enough. He's allergic to egg whites. And so like right before we leave to eat. I'm like have some ice cream eats ice cream. he's fine. It's no but when you have with allergies it's like it's not. The emergency room becomes a little less intense. They're used to it. But you basically like. We've only had to do it twice in two years. But you have to epi pen they could and then no matter. What if you do that. You have to take him to the hospital. Okay fine totally fine. Thank you for asking. Because of graham. One neil off you go home and you think about the quarterfinal. That's the only thing we can say. Jaakko what was worse chelsea through the first hour of the match. A solution that is good for contact center. Now, we're also studying to provide the solution channels and to provide also on me across channels solutions. Across. Messaging Chats websites in-app in many other channels, swell. Rhonda's this because eventually customers today expect to get the best service across the channels to get it also to be consistent and fluent. so you're talking. On about trade-offs, contacts and trade offs, and how you kind of you develop the plow foam to try and counteract some of the. Can you elaborate a little bit on what kind of trade offs? You UTAH. Yeah, sure. So S I mentioned. I. Think Sense. There is such thing as customer service. There is always a trade off between. You know. The company's you know our clients at one to provide. Good. Customer experience, but Dan their cost. For providing customer experience and especially. When there is a your scaly. So as no telecommunication companies and banks as A. Growth in a number of customers, a number of agents, it becomes more and more challenging to keep the level of customer experiences still keep the cost same. Venture. Customers what we experienced when we are calling. Is. Experienced long waiting times. We experienced sometimes inexperienced agents or you know all short agents, we know maybe limited access to internal systems or. Out Maybe. So So. Then on the other hand when companies try to solve skill ability issues and use technologies like. Then again, they get. They throw their customers into amaze rights with the that is not great. Awesome experience, and then sometimes they try to. Come these using. Trying to divert customers the other channels that they're more scalable like email and chat, and so on. That eventually, still customers are still calling and again receipts during co-lead more and more again because if you want something and you now. You still need to call. So it's not one or the other, he needed to provide great customer experience across channels and I think that if chat was where like a trim two or three years ago. Now, it's clear that the voice is as important as jet and you need to provide again a solution across channels and. Make sure that you don't need voice s like. Sumptuous is. Completed to. Jets. It's interesting that you mentioned or what you mentioned earlier makes me think about how a lot of times customer service can actually be a differentiator. Sorts can be a competitive advantage for starting companies. In. The US you've got a handful of companies that are just like really known for good customer service like jet blue, a trader Joe's. Maybe, there is something that you as well. Cain any companies that Spring to mind. You're like, okay. I. Don't mind calling them. I think John Lewis Typically tend to have a pretty good customer service, but another one from the US is Tom's shoes. Of you've had this dog is where some very agents have spent like twenty thirty minutes on the call was among and something. I think any complaints they ended up just giving you a new pair of shoes in insulin, and then there's another one about flower. Flower. Company where? They, they missed delivery to someone's There was an important delivery wasn't birthday with something else and the Mr Delivery, the person foreign open ended up giving them free flowers not announced just free flowers everyone. Constantly after that. For Making one mistake. So it just shows how important is to have customer service because people like me who have nothing to do with it tells stories about. That's going to be really expensive if you're going to be willing to stay on the phone for hours with the human. So I guess Vocal Da da driven customer service help companies close that gap a little bit when it comes to that customer service advantage. I don't think they relate to that. you. You mentioned several companies that could. A similar experience. No. Before costs and for civil ones. Not just automated, but I will make sure that. The customer experience comes first. This is Thomas Kinman in environmental economist at Bucknell University. He's as town dumps were closing but bigger. Regional landfills were taking their place but people didn't see that and so the recycling Arrow was born. That's why we recycled to this day. Who knows where we'd be without that barge? After five months a judge ordered Lowell Harrelson's garbage to go back to where it came from New York to be burned what a legacy <hes> forever will be known as that dummy who sailed the garbage barge. You are basically the reason why we recycle yeah. It has an impact on my tombstone. I would like them to say this. Unsung Economists: Sadie Alexander
"In nineteen twenty one. But because of a race nobody would hire her as an economist. So a few years later, she got her LA degree and went on to have a lustrous career as a civil rights lawyer Bucknell university professor Nina banks has been researching the career in life of Sadie Alexander for almost two decades. And she's working on a pair of books about Sadie Alexander. But economists have not been really focused on her work because of the I think the the belief that when she wasn't able to practice economics that she really stopped focusing much on ecconomic issues, but I really found that that wasn't the case that for forty years, at least she was giving speeches around the country and all of those speeches dealt with issues that that dealt with the status of African Americans. So we don't have recordings of those speeches. But we do have the transcripts and in those speeches Sadie Alexander had fascinating things to say not just about issues that were relevant during her time. But about issues that still matter now, this is the indicator from planet money. I'm Stacey Vanik Smith. I'm caught of Garcia today on the show. Our first episode of series in which we shine a new light on an economist from the past an economist contributions. We think deserve another look I up Sadie Alexander. Support also comes from ADT, America's trusted home security company can help protect you against the break ins fires and carbon monoxide twenty four seven emergency response when you needed most more at ADT dot com, Bucknell university, economists, Nina banks, recently, analyzed the speech that CD Alexander gave in nineteen forty five at Florida agricultural and mechanical university, and in the speech Sadie Alexander spoke to the audience about the persistence of racial discrimination and the status of black workers as marginal workers and other words workers who were the last to be hired and the first to be fired when. Businesses were letting workers go the year before that speech. President Franklin D Roosevelt had given a famous speech of his own in which the president had argued for a second Bill of rights and one of those rights would be the right to employment for anyone who is willing and able to get a job. In other words that the economy should propential- be at full employment where anyone who wants to work can find work. This would alleviate the economic insecurity of those marginal workers constantly wondering if they were about to be unemployed. Now, it was already understood at the time that win the economy is at full employment workers get paid more. Because when everyone who wants a job can get one then companies have to compete with each other to attract and hire workers and also to keep their own workers from leaving them for another job and the companies compete with each other by offering better wages and working conditions to workers city Alexander's early. Distinct contribution economics was her argument that full employment was also absolutely necessary. For achieving racial equality. So Sadie Alexander believed that having a fully employed labor force would increase workers pay and they're purchasing power. But of course, this could not occur. If whites continued to exclude black workers from having the right to work, so Sadie Alexander said that full employment was quote, the only solution to the economic subjugation of the negro and of the great masses of white labor. Obviously Sadie Alexander was speaking during a time in which segregation was both legally and informally embedded across American society, American institutions, and that segregation extended to the labor market in which many white workers viewed block workers as rivals as competitors for jobs. CD Alexander made the argument that in order to get rid of economic, insecurity, the whole working class people from all racial and ethnic backgrounds were in it together that they would all benefit from an economy at full employment, and that full employment could not be defined as just. Full employment for white workers. It had to include everyone because let's say that white workers were full employment. But black workers were not then not only with the black workers experienced the hardships of unemployment, but also white workers might continue to see unemployed black workers as threat to their jobs. So if everyone who wanted a job had a job there might be less suspicion between workers of different races, which would make it more likely that the white working class and the black working class would work together to bargain for better, wages and working conditions. Another part of CD Alexander's argument win the economy is not at full employment and therefore businesses don't have to pay higher wages than the owners of businesses can keep more of the profits for themselves at least in the short term. But need a Bank says Sadie Alexandra argued that this eventually leads to rising inequality and will become a big problem for the whole economy because if you exclude a big class of workers from having jobs, it means there are fewer people earning the money to buy the goods that were made by those businesses in the first place. Which again eventually could lead to an economic downturn. But you could prevent that outcome by increasing the earnings power of all workers. And again, that's what happens when the economy is at full employment. And then finally Sadie Alexander argued that full employment would free people from material want from deprivation or starvation or from a lack of basic needs. And so they would then also be free to pursue higher goals to realize their potential professionally and personally, and that would make it less likely that workers would become disillusioned with the government itself or with democracy, and like president Roosevelt Sadie Alexander feared that economic insecurity would result in quote, men and women who have lost hope demanding a dictator to take over the reins of government Sadie. Alexander was not a socialist. She believed in regulated capitalism says Nida banks, but she did also believe that the government had an active role to play in a cheerful employment for the economy when the private sector couldn't do that by itself. She. Envisioned a public work programme that addressed pressing needs that would enhance people's well-being she focused on improving housing conditions in urban slums or providing electricity to every form she talked about reducing illiteracy, reducing hunger and making sure that people were properly clothed. That's typically not what we think about today when we focus on public works as part of this goal of cheating full employment for the economy Sadie. Alexander also argued that the government should guarantee a job to people who would want one and professor banks believes that Sadie Alexander might even have been the first economist to make that case. In fact, a national jobs guarantee is a policy idea that is being hotly debated right now something else that communists are debating right now is the question of whether the economy is in fact at full employment, and there is obviously no way to know for sure how Sadie Alexander would answer that question. But here's what we can say the labor market has improved. A lot in recent years and the unemployment rate for black or African Americans has mostly been falling during that time. But at six point eight percent, it is almost twice as high as the unemployment rate for white Americans, which is only three point five percent. And according to the Economic Policy Institute, a think tank, a black worker with the same education as a white worker is only getting paid roughly eighty percent as much as the white worker, and that applies at every educational level, and that wage gap is bigger now than it was back in the year two thousand it. Of course, it isn't just in the economy where there still exist big racial disparities. Another place is in the very disciplined that Sadie Alexander tried to enter nearly a hundred years ago economics to see this. You just have to look at the numbers numbers that Anna Gifty Poku Osman senior at the university of Maryland knows really well, so basically in between two fifteen to sixteen five out of one thousand one hundred and fifty eight doctoral degrees and economics where worth of black women.
