All right, well, today we'll be talking with the legend, the voice of the show, bookshop is going to join us and mentioned it ward out, who has some observations about it up and coming slugger in the Cardinals organization and an important but murky injury situation for the defending champions and we'll be talking with Alan Gonzalez, who's in Arizona, will digest the bad injury news that have hammered that his hammered the nationally west teams in the last couple of days. Let's start with this, a bleacher tweet from Andrew stout who says people who love sports like the pitch clock. He puts sports and quotation marks. People who love baseball hate the pitch clock, here I stand, I can do no other Andrew. Are you telling me then? That Paul goldsmith hates baseball because he likes the pitch clock. Buck showalter, you telling me he hates baseball because he likes the pitch clock Theo Epstein. You think he hates baseball? No, a lot of people in the game really love the pitch clock. I'm gonna ask boog chambi the percentage of people he's spoken with and how much they, you know, who like the pitch clock. I think it's fairly apparent early in the preseason tell it a lot of people like the pitch clock. Positive reviews all around. You really just roasted Andrew. I'm so sorry that he had to experience that, that brutal beating you just gave him. And I have so much respect for Andrew. You know, he said this is a great bleacher tweets all the time, but in this case, I just disagree. Well, as we tape the show yesterday morning, we got confirmation from a source, the Gavin Lux had suffered a terrible injury, a bad injury in the exhibition game earlier this week, the Dodgers announced yesterday that he suffered a torn ACL. He's out for the year and an emotional Lux who was going to be the Dodgers shortstop spoke of the porters yesterday. I think every baseball player's dream is to play shortstop for the Los Angeles. Los Angeles Dodgers, so yeah, I think that's one of the hardest parts. Gavin,

"For the Bloomberg sports update brought to you by tri state out of your John stache hour. All right, Nathan, quite a win for the Devils. They look to be headed into overtime in Columbus Ryan graves scored with one second left in regulation, the Devils won three to two. It's their 35th win of the year. Their 20th on the road, the islanders lost three two. That was in a shootout at home against Ottawa rangers go for a 6th grade win tonight they're in Vancouver. It's the Knicks final game before the all star break tonight in Atlantic. College hoops, saint Johns needed double overtime, but got to win at depaul won the second overtime 9 zero. Lowly Georgetown and then the Big Ten Rutgers lost the home games in Nebraska. All NFL teams now have a head coach to last to hire where Indianapolis and Arizona and they both hired, Philadelphia coordinator Shane steichen just coached the eagles offense. Now he takes over the colts, Jonathan gannon was the eagles defensive for their and he'll now leave the Cardinals as expected Derek Carr, the Raiders quarterback to pass 9 seasons, is now a free agent since he was released. He becomes eligible to sign right away. In Port St. Lucie, mets pitchers and catchers officially report today manager buck showalter starting his second year on the job. It all starts on even level playing field. Nobody cares about any of that stuff. Between the lines, trust me. It's am I better than you and are you better than me? And let's see where we're at the end of the year and let's get a chance to roll the dice in October. Last October didn't go well for the mets who have a big change on their pitching staff Justin Verlander and Jacob de Grom out. Tiger Woods is first turning over a year. The genesis and Riviera in LA is going to play tomorrow with Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas. John stash, that were Bloomberg sports, Nathan. All right, John, thanks, Bloomberg

"Michael. 6 34 on Wall Street. Time now for the sports report brought to you by tri state Audi, here's John stash hour. All right, Amy, it'll be a different metro in 2023, Justin Verlander and Jacob degrom, now Taiwan walker, both out, walker just signed with the Phillies, still not known about Chris Bassett. He's also a free agent at the winner meetings in San Diego mitts manager buck showalter asks for the first time his reaction to de gram's departure to Texas. He's moving to a good situation and contrary to what a lot of people try to. And it wasn't something that he had preordained. Something that kind of played itself out and you know, it's one of those offers he couldn't afford to pass up. You know, we wish him well. Yankees with a free agent signing, bringing back reliever Tommy Keene Lee's had some injuries, Jason tsion, who led the Yankees and wins last season to sign with the cubs four years 68 million the cubs also signed Cody ballinger who was the 2019 MVP with the Dodgers. Nixon nets both home tonight next against Atlanta. Let's take on Charlotte, the rangers are in Vegas. Last night, devil shut out Chicago three now through the Devils have 43 points. That's the most in the NHL. Islanders cut a 5 one deficit to 5 four but they lost at home to St. Louis 7 four they've dropped three of the last four. "Brad Siegel. The mets have really dominated the Phillies all year. On Saturday, the mets had a chance to get two games on the Phillies instead. They would only get one. They won the opening game of the double header final score 8 to two, the nightcap though was pretty much all Philadelphia as Bailey falter through 6 innings of two hit ball Kyle schwarber had a triple and a double final score in the night cap four to one. So it's a double header split for the mets. They will close the series on Sunday. Taiwan walker will not be their starter. He's got some back problems, so buck showalter is going to pull him for that game. The Yankees just continue to struggle and stumble around here after the all star break. They lose to Toronto final score 5 to two Saturday and the frustrations starting to catch up to the Yankees Aaron Boone Garrett Cole both kind of losing their tempers at various points. Cole is now 9 and 6 and the Yankees are now watching that lead over Toronto shrink to just 7 games back on July 8th. It was 15 and a half games. Let's move on to the WNBA, the liberty trying to win back to back games in Chicago. It did not happen Saturday. The Chicago sky thumped them 100 to 62. It's a best of three series, split at one a piece. They will be coming to New York for game three. Don't know when that game is yet, but the winner is advancing in the WNBA playoffs. Pre season football is on for the Giants tonight, they will host Cincinnati. That game kicks off at 7. Then the jets, they are in prime time on Monday against the falcons

"I'm Christa raggio. The Yankees post all star break freefall continued on Saturday. They lost at Yankee Stadium to the Blue Jays of all teams final score 5 to two. Yanks have now lost 15 of their last 19 games and the Blue Jays have now pushed to 7 games behind the Yankees in the American League east at one point. The Yankees were up 15 and a half games. That was an early July, but things have certainly changed. Garrett Cole is now 9 and 6 and the Yankees are very emotional and not playing very good baseball right now. They will lose the series regardless of what happens in the wrap up game on Sunday. The mets, well, they split their double header against the Phillies. They lost the night cap four to one, but they took the opening game 8 to two, Taiwan walker scratched from his start on Sunday due to a back injury buck showalter did not announce who will replace him in the lineup for the mets. WNBA basketball, big time loss for the New York liberty in Chicago, the sky put the hammer down and then some 100 to 62 that evens the series at one win apiece, it forces a decisive game three, the WNBA has not yet decided when that game will be, but it will be in New York, the winner of that game three is moving on in the postseason. NFL preseason football continuing for the jets and the Giants, the Giants will play Sunday Night 7 o'clock kick at home against the Bengals and then on Monday night, the jets go prime time. They will kick off against the Atlanta Falcons. That will be an 8 o'clock start as again the jets and giants playing late in the weekend in this NFL postseason. That's your Bloomberg sports update. I have his name already. How could you get rid of Trey Mancini? That was like, this team, well, all right. So let's just, let's just lose all the non die hard fans right now. I'm gonna go on a two minute Orioles rant. And then we're gonna move on. Buck showalter, look how good he's doing with the mets right now, and he was like the heart and soul of that team. I watched I'm all in on baseball now, by the way. I've been watching a lot of baseball. My wife thinks there's something wrong with me. And watching, I'm watching Manny Machado the other day. Play for the Padres. Like that whole team was just that the feel and the vibe of that whole team was so awesome. And then, you know, Trey Mancini was what was left of that, I feel like it was like our remaining sort of connection to maybe not necessarily that year, but just that vibe of being an Orioles fan. And now he's gone. So, you know, I don't know. Being a baseball fan, I feel like it's way harder than being a football fan because it's a 162 games. And they are much less, I don't know, tanking and not tanking. That's not really a sacred thing in baseball, right? So they're just doing it. They don't care. And it doesn't really matter to them. So that to me is harder to accept. Back to reality. And this book showalter, I miss Manny Machado. I miss Trey Mancini. And let's talk about the saints. And I'm as Jorge Lopez. His name is Jorge Lopez. And I apologize for missing twice on that. Jeez. Rough spot for the Lopez family. It's not good. Rough spot for me.

"CBS sports radio. We can make this pretty simple I would imagine, But we do have to address this. I I do not view that viral video. Of Jacob the Graham as any sort of evidence or gotcha matter of fact, that's actually And Repulses probably too strong for word, but it's it is, it is reflective of society. I just think that Too many people. Um oh, almost Are resistant. To such a level of greatness. That they are inclined or they want to challenge the authenticity of the achievement. Because somewhere It's that that that that is derived from jealousy like I interesting. You know what I mean? Like, I don't I don't think you saw the video. Yeah. I mean, for those who missed that I'll give you He went through his belt for a second. It looked like he was pulling his pants up because he's pretty. He's got skin like me. I've got the Irish body. I always joke. I've got no behind, right. I've got broad shoulders and a little belly right, so, but my shorts are always falling. Yes, saw on the golf course I'm always walking around pulling my shorts up or even my jeans. Right? So I get it. I get it, and I don't think it really fills out the back of his uniform because he seems to be pretty. Slightly built back there, you know, Um I think that it is really unfair and really dangerous to now, try to apply that less than two seconds of mannerism. And now try to discredit somebody who has been on a run as good as anybody in the history of baseball. Yeah, I mean, I get what people are trying to do this, though, because They feel like it's it's ripe, you know, for the for the taking. It's just an easy conversation. But the challenges other than that, right other than Jacob deGrom, you know, fiddling around on this belt for the second quarter. Maybe it's not like he's stuff found exactly where the spot is. Let me get this stick and put in my glove and then rub it with something else in there. Who knows what he's doing. There has never been any indication that he is doing anything like this. Not that you could find. You know, evidence or proof of this. Never had any complaints. You know, hearing people talk about a spin rates suddenly increasing all these, you know, ancillary points. That point that indicate that the guy maybe cheating. You've never heard that And so he just It's the wrong place at the wrong time, and it's creating a narrative about him. That I think is unfair. Now, here's the thing, though. I think it dies pretty quickly. With Jacob deGrom. He's been too good for too many years. Um, for two to stick, so to speak, Not to not to be, you know, no pun intended there, but I think I think this one dies quicker than any of these other ones that we've had doubt about. Well, I I agree, maybe even quicker than the Garrett Coal because this is not coming from a player. By the way, Josh Donaldson got some revenge. Last night, he hit a two run bomb the tie things up yet an awful lost by the Yankees. Chapman with a with a blown save game when they have a five game five lead. Five run lead at one point. And, uh, what was I was certainly was 53 when Donaldson hit the home run, and then Cruz hit, though. Yeah, Five, I guess was five to what I mean. I was watching most of the hoops, but yeah, that was ugly, but anyway The point about the grum is that I do. I think you're right. I do think it will kind of blend into the white noise file very fast. Unless What happens now? I don't expect this because I never expect this when he pitches. What happens if you get smoked tonight? Yeah. Now the play the Padres. That should be a hell of a game. By the way, so he's pitching against the Padres, who have mashers up and down the line up really good baseball team. Some speed as well can create havoc on the basis. What if As you know, Buck Showalter once said. If an ace makes 32 starts 33 starts, he's going to go to the mound about 23 times with his best 20 times with his best stuff, seven or eight times with his B plus a minus stuff and a handful of times where he's really searching and reaching. What if this is one of the handful of starts where Would have the grip on the ball. This body doesn't feel right. What? It didn't sleep. Well, last night, kid kept them up. I don't know. What if Jacob, the ground does not pitch well tonight, then the circumstances, the timing. Oh, well, you know, that video was circulated, Maybe Jacob the Graham stop grabbing the sticky stuff. Yeah, but here's this unfair. Here's the thing. All these guys do this to some extent, you know, we don't know if the ground does it. I don't know. I don't know if he does either, but I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm just gonna assume that he does because everybody does right. But I don't think it's necessarily to cheat. I think like it's the it's because their hands are wet. You know this BT you're sweating. It's whatever is going on with your physiology of your body in producing sweat and sweat glands, and so your hands are getting slippery and so They're putting it somewhere. So next time it won't be in his belt. You know what I mean? Next time it will be somewhere else. I don't know, underneath his glove or inside his wrist or who knows who knows where it could be. But I think a lot of guys are doing this and I don't know why it's become such an issue because it seems nobody could hit anymore. That's why, Yeah, but and the games got very ugly and very skilled. But But is it because of the substances? I don't know on the ball? I don't think so. BT I think it's because of It's it's launch angles. It's it's It's a shift the shift. Um it's I don't know. Okay with striking out exactly guys are okay with, you know, there's no pride anymore and not not striking out. Pitchers can throw 100 at this point. You know what I mean?.

"Because Alonzo mention that for baseball pitchers, it is about control and have and this is the other problem. Baseball. You go through these unwritten rules. How many times we've been down this road? The although this one's written, these rules are written there, just being chosen not to enforced. I meant as far as plunking batters go right and sell the message. The point being, how many times we know what guys been hit on purpose? Why? Because pitchers have such great control. And then you're really the ball slipping is not something you see that often anymore. When you watch a nine inning baseball game bogus, So to that point, as technology decreases and pictures, arm strength could continues to increase, and these guys are coming in for one inning throwing 100 miles an hour. A lot was right. You don't want that drilling you you want them to have control Now It's up to you to up your Annie. And figure out how to hit that. And if that's the way hitters are going that I think to me, we have no problem here. I really honestly think we have no problem here and I will crush. You don't want to see a guy cheating and going with, you know all the spider Tech, but I mean There is basically clay form. That story didn't in the athletic and what Delaware, where teams are shipping in the right clay to rub down baseball for grip. So what? Because this is a substance we've never seen before. That now, suddenly that is the problem. I mean, the sunscreen everything. So where do we cross the line of me For years? It may not too much and you go to a baseball game there literally allowed to have a rosin bag behind behind the pitcher's mound. Major league Baseball now isn't profiting on Spider tech stocks. So that becomes an issue and folks will let you finish. Shame on Mike. Shit. Also, shame on Mike Shit. The man you pro who the skeletal you can talk baseball nationally, the manager of the Cardinals, who was the one who brought this to light about all the pictures. Cheating was so frustrated by it a couple weeks ago that has led us down this domino effect. Shell. Can you keep your mouth shut and listen to your players. I mean, obviously, that we have hitters all over the place. Now, Some are complaining, like Donaldson, but but for the most part, the players seem to be going down This avenue. I don't want to get drilled by this. It's finally have grip and the picture is loving it and Mike Schmidt, Mike Shelters made baseball looked so idiotic here and fans point. Frankly, I think a chicken tired about hearing about cheating scandals, and she'll did this. Yeah. I mean, this is, um There's like 1000 different things to unpack here, which is part of this problem. It's not a simple conversation. There's multiple layers. One of them is clearly the hypocrisy of baseball like they let this happen, so why now? Do they get to be on their high horse trying to fix this? It's very much an N C. Double a thing. It's true of all of these leagues. Like they don't do anything about things they should be doing. Then they get called on it. And then it's like, Oh, here we come to the rescue. We can fix it. Even though the problem began with you turning a blind out of something, So there is certainly that I also and I could be completely wrong here. But to me like I get, I've taken a ball fresh out of a box. And it is there's like a sheen to it. It's slippery. So I have no problem with teams Robin Clay on a ball before hand rubbing the ball before it gets put into play like you should do that arose a bag I get that guys are sweating. It's a bazillion degrees outside. That's an easy way to dry your hand like I'm okay with that, Whether it's a towel or rosin bag that's cool, even the natural unavoidable mix. As C. J. Nitkowski said yesterday of that rosin bag and sunscreen because you've got to have sunscreen on like even that I can make room for my head. But if you are now putting something on your hand That you don't need for any other reason. Just to be better at pitching like that, to me is an easy line to draw and punish guys who go past it because Alonso's point is true in that I want guys to have control. But part of the problem with a lack of control these days is because guys are trained to just throw it as hard as they can. It's not necessarily to directly kind of give away control of it. But that is the after effect of just maxing out your arms, so maybe don't throw one. Oh, one throw 96 with control. And everybody wins here. So I'd like to me This is a problem that does need to be fixed. I don't think that we should just go and everybody is okay with it. Let's move on because there are guys throwing doing things to balls that should not be having balls going in direction. They shouldn't be going in. Great They shouldn't be going in. And if we're tired of Team's batting to 20 collectively and no action and no run scored. Then we should absolutely make sure the pictures are not going too far to make sure that they have control of these baseballs. Which then if you do that major league baseball games become 10 8. Guess what? They're four hours long again. We go back to pace of freaking play, So nobody's ever going to be happy with this stupid sport, which drives me nuts. There'll be more on this next with sound check an interesting quote for Buck Showalter that made me think twice and go. Maybe you have a point. I know bucket sometimes look like he's in the rocking chair out front. He's crazy, but I think book shall alter might be onto something. We have sound check next. It's bogus. It's more as it's the D a show. Let's go on this Thursday. Everybody. Uh, ma'am, you can't.

"It's the mic broom head show. We've got just a few minutes left before we close it out. Sad story yesterday in a lot of people very familiar with this name in Arizona in the sports world, Pedro Gomez made while he made national news for covering very bonds in his in his run. But he also did a lot of work with the Diamondbacks and was kind of a staple in the baseball industry here, died suddenly yesterday. And I mean, suddenly, this was something that was shocking people on one of the people that knew him very well was Jeff Mon, jefe. You worked. Did you work with Paige ordered you? How Well did you know him? I fairly well I had worked with him during my time at the Diamondbacks. We stayed close and touch over the years after I left. Uh, there is, you know, you say this a lot when somebody you know passes, But this is I mean, this in the most sincere way possible. You never met a nicer, kinder man and somebody who Hey, just e Think John Feinstein, The author put it best today on Twitter. He said he never got caught up in the hole. I worked at ESPN kind of thing. Well, that's interesting is that I I didn't know him. Well, I'd met him on one or two occasions. I have a short conversation with him, but Everybody that knew him to a person. You kept hearing. What a kind hearted What a good man he was, and they did ah little piece on him yesterday about his family and going back to Cuba. And and and what? What an interesting story. Yeah, he and we talked, and I talked a number of times about his his strong emotional attachment to his home country. He and I had talked in a couple of occasions about Some of the theories behind why the regime was still in power and how hurtful it was to a lot of people who live here in the United States that are from Cuba and can't go back home. That's that's their home. Hey was it was so much more to him than just baseball or sports devoted family man. His son is ah Minor league baseball pitcher and the Red Sox organization, but just you and I'll say this, too, and I should mention this is well. One of the most creative, courageous writers I ever encountered. If he wrote something critical when he was working here. If he wrote something critical about the D backs, you could book it. He would be in the club house that night. So that whoever he criticized could confront him talked to him and Pedro would stand his ground. But he'd be there and that's rare. Mike that's really rare. You know, we we work in a very ego driven business at times and for so many people that knew him to talk about him. Being that opposite person to be is courageous as he was and as good as his job with that kind of Um, ego that it would take to be able to do that. But to not show that, in his interpersonal react about you know, in his inner personal interactions with people is pretty amazing combination never held grudges. The piece of writing that people are talking about today and I had forgotten about it. On the day of Game seven of the old one world serious, he wrote a column that basically told us all about Curt Schilling way in advance of the rest of the world finding out about he wasn't that great a guy. Uh, not that great A teammate And the story is is that when that the day that ran the day of Game seven, there were players in the clubhouse that went up and thanked Pedro for writing it. First of all you think about the timing Game seven of the world. Syriza's That's you know, that's a really difficult time to write a column like that, But that's that's who he was. He was he. Like I said, the word is courage. It's tough to write columns like that at certain times. But he had no hesitation And to do that on about the co m V P. We're talking about a player on the team. You're talking about the co m V P of that world. Syria? Yeah, and that I mean, that just takes a certain amount of guts, and he was willing to do it. He also in 1999 was the guy that basically Was the first to write that there were problems in the D'backs clubhouse with their manager Buck Showalter, that he was basically losing the veterans in the clubhouse. And that was to me. That was the first real sign that okay, we're Big League Baseball town. Now, when we got a guy writing a column like this, I had great admiration for Pedro, and it's just There's there's no way to sum up. How sad the story is. It's I I'm glad I know what last minute I asked you to come and talk about this because I knew you would know him better than anybody else. And so I appreciate you doing that. I know it's gotta it Strike you more personally than the rest of us. So thanks for doing it does And I appreciate you giving me the chance. Talk about it. Thanks, Jeff. And it's Ah. In the reason why I bring this up is because, you know, we get caught up and we do when we should. We're going to be very critical and we're gonna we're gonna have impressions of how people are based on the small snapshot in which we see them. But it was. It was a sad day for a lot of people. And I was, um, pleasantly surprised at the impact that that story made when you know it wasn't just a scroll at the bottom of the of the ESPN or on CBS before the broadcast yesterday. That it really impacted the sports world because with the person that he was, it's just a very good reminder that what we do pales in comparison to who we are. Because in the end, people are gonna remember who you are. And I hope that I hope that we all could be mindful of that. But it's a great reminder for someone who does what I do for a living that I really don't want to be known for what I do as much for who I am. And it really want makes me want to put myself.
