"Have a guy who he's a right handed hitter who can't hit left handed pitching. He can't play first base, can't play second base, can't play the outfield, is really only a DH, but the DH option that you have and had by and large were left handed hitters, so you see what I'm saying. It's like he's a puzzle piece that doesn't fit in any of those scenarios. And you know, he granted he did very well against right handed pitching. He has the power to change games. He has the kind of the flair for the dramatic at times. But you can really only put him out in the field in very limited, very limited opportunities because the ball seems to find him and he just he's not he's not good. It just does not work. Give him credit. You know, he tried first base, tried left field, you know, at least he wasn't saying, hey, I'm just not even going to try, so he was being a team guy, but this was a guy who came fast through the system on the strength of his bat, and after that great rookie year that he had, you know, like pretty much like Yelich, the pandemic year, everything just kind of blew up and hasn't been able to get back on track. So he changed his setup in the off season last year, and I think that helped him a little bit as far as consistency still does strike out at a high rate as you noted. But if you can do damage, the times that you are making contact, the teams will live with that. And I think the brews are in that same boat. So this is going to be what I would call a make or break spring for him. They have a bunch of guys in camp right now who are better defensively can play multiple positions defensively. Like the Owen millers of the world, the Abraham Toros of the world, Mike brasso is still around. You know, you've got a guy like Bryce terrain who is going to be called up at some point. So in keston here is out of options. So there's not a lot of wiggle room for the brewers. They're going to have to figure out one way or the other. If he's worth keeping around and if not, maybe he's a guy who, you know, toward the end of camp, he started shopping around and you got to think that some teams, you know, somebody would maybe want to take another crack at him and if they have an opening at DH or whatever the case may be, he may be a prime change of scenery Canada. So when your rotation starts with burns and Woodruff and Peralta and Lauer, that's a pretty solid start. I guess the question is who's the 5th guy and who's beyond that? Is it just wade Miley has a lock on the 5th starter spot? I know Aaron ashby was just shut down with shoulder issues, so what's the depth situation? Yeah, I would have looked at it as a kind of a three man battle between ashby weighed Miley and Adrian Hauser, but now that ashby has been knocked out of that competition for the time being with his shoulder issue. I think it's kind of a toss up right now between wade Miley and Adrian Hauser and truth be told if you look at where they are in their careers and the money that they spent to bring wade Miley and as a free agent, also the fact that he's left handed, I would tend to give ten to the tip the scales a little bit toward wade Miley heading into opening day as that number 5 guy. Adrian Hauser had a really poor year last year, maybe some of the residual from losing his arbitration case. I don't know, but he also battled some injuries. But he's also a guy who before he became a staple in the rotation, did have success in the bullpen, and did really well. He's a heavy ground ball guy, sinker guy, and was somebody who could come in and pitch in and pitch to an eggs and get four or 5 ground ball outs and do his job on a consistent basis. So I think that while he may not be happy in that role necessarily, I think the brewers would feel good about having him in the bullpen and having him also as insurance as we saw last year, the brewers had ton of injury problems in their in their rotation and when air and ashby didn't pan out the way they thought, then when you're relying on 11 starch from Jason Alexander, you're in trouble. So, you know, they also went out and got Janssen junk in the off season, Bryce Wilson. So they have other guys in camp and in the organization as well who are kind of right on the cusp there and will be stretched out and spring and guys that can step in and kind of fill the breach and do a better job and keep the brewers more competitive than the starts last year when they didn't have their big horses starting. I feel like we have to spend a little bit of time at least a little bit of time on the bullpen and particularly Devin Williams, although I don't know what more you can say about Devin Williams at this point other than he's pretty superlative. So I imagine that especially with haters departure, he'll just be firmly implanted in that closer role. What should we expect from him this year? I think it's going to be interesting. This will be the first year that he comes in as the anointed closer, you know, from day one. It's a role that he has sought his whole career and I think it's one that he's definitely going to relish. He started his off season a little bit earlier because he's going to be pitching for Team USA in the world baseball classic. And as a result, once he gets back from that, I think the brewers are going to taper him off a little bit, give him a little bit of rest going into the season. But, you know, he's a guy who he's a two pitch guy as we all know, he's got that incredible change up the Airbender and he's got a fastball that plays very well. Those two pieces hitters just have not been able to figure them out. It's amazing. His change up is one of the best we've seen in a long, long time, and even though hitters know it's coming more often than not, he's still able to get guys out with that, so he's a little bit, I think he struggled last year, not so much with closing games per se, but the trade of Josh hater, who's a good friend of his and that one two punch at the back of games was just incredible. And having filled that role as a setup guy, regular set up guy for several years behind hater. I think it took a little bit for him to kind of get comfortable in that closer's role. But now that he's had the latter part of 2022 and now this whole off season kind of wrap his brain around it. I think he's definitely looking forward to stepping into that role and stepping into the spotlight and I certainly would expect another really good year out of him. It's going to be fun to watch and see how many saves he could put up if he can actually better his numbers last year, which over the course of an entire season were the best of his career. You mentioned terrain as someone who's likely to debut this year, but I wonder among their other guys particularly in the high miners if there are other prospects who either because they're just sort of set to debut or because they'll be the first ones called upon in the event of injury that brewers fans might expect to see this year.

"There and all the taste there, but it was the first time that I've gone there. I've always wanted to go and it was absolutely great. What did you guys do during a Christmas breaks? I mean, I just laid low in Nebraska, had some lovely runs us, and just really lived it up here. We can't talk about what I did. I didn't did nothing. I need your opinion on this buster. Sarah's caused some consternation on the college game day podcast by sharing the Nebraska delicacy of chili and cinnamon rolls, which her family had for their Christmas dinner. And as an east coaster, a northeaster, that is an interesting combination to me. I was wondering what your take is buster. See, that would be okay. In the last ten years, I definitely ventured away from the turkey standard on Christmas Day. Of course, I think that's gone away and had some steak. I'm very open to sort of venturing out to Sarah. I fully back you. I don't know if that chili on Christmas Day would necessarily be my first choice. But you know what? Thanksgiving has become the turkey day, right? And I think in Christmas anything goes. So I'm backing you up on that one, Sarah. Well, I think you're cute. And also I would like to preface that the cinnamon rolls do not have frosting on them. Okay, they are the Miller and paint cinnamon rolls that have no frosting. So basically, if you eat cornbread and chili and you're rolling your eyes at this, how dare you is how I'm going to respectfully say that. Okay, I don't have a problem with anything you said right up until the moment where you said your cinnamon rolls don't have frosting on them. What's the point of heading cinnamon rolls? If you don't have frosting on them. Okay, but the frosting and the chili, that's a little much. I will say the cinnamon roll with frosting and chili. That's a bit far, but with no frosting, it's totally fine. It's a classic. Taylor? This is problematic. I'm having a hard time moving on. It's been a couple weeks since Sarah revealed this to me, so. I guess we'll have to talk some baseball try and wash my palate clean. Right. And we're going to be talking a lot of baseball today. We got Sierra Lang's coming up, we got Paul and bikinis coming up. And Yankees gentle manager Brian cashman to talk about the Aaron judge negotiations and how they played out and what more the Yankees might do before we get to spring training, which guys is only about now what? 5, 6 weeks away. It's right around the corner. Some huge deals have happened in the interim since the last time we had a podcast. Rafael Devers and the Red Sox. Finalizing an 11 year $331 million deal, the Red Sox totally waved a white flag. They had to sign him. We'll talk about that on the pod coming up. Carlos Correa's deal is still unsigned, there was a tweet out last night that he's been in contact with another team. I just don't think he's going to get the $300 million plus deal given the concerns that have popped up in a couple of his physical examinations. The Red Sox signed Corey Kluber to a one year deal, the reds release Mike Moustakas, who he has another year left on his contract to $22 million in 2023. The Diamondback signed all star third baseman Evan Longoria to a one year deal. Taylor, how about the Orioles? Making big moves, they traded for Ryan or her and then they DF 8 and two days later. What did they doing? I don't know, I don't know. I thought it was funny that someone would pay money for Tyler Nevin personally because I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he is just a below average baseball player. So a lot of small deals that the red section or the oils are making. I thought the word significant was going to be involved here, Taylor. I keep on waiting for significant because that's what we heard they were going to do during this season. This off season and they haven't been doing that at all. The Yankees named Omar mania, former mets general managers, senior adviser and their baseball operations to go along with Brian sabian, who left the San Francisco Giants to join the Yankees front office reportedly and will ask Brian about this to better balance the old school and the new school as they move forward. Wade Miley, veteran left hander agreed to a one year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers $4.5 million. Zack's Davies went back to the Diamondbacks one year, $5 million. Eric Hosmer is signing with the Chicago Cubs for minimum wage effectively in baseball terms because he has three years and $39 million left on the contract. He signed with the Padres back in 2018. Hosmer is still a good defensive first baseman as we talked about in the pod last time with David Ross for the cubs, the quickest path into relevance is through defense and pitching and Hosmer will help out with that. The brewers also acquired pitcher Bryce Wilson from the pirates for cash. You mentioned that the tigers paid the Orioles for Tyler Nevin. It was an interesting story over the break, the ten Major League Baseball umpires retiring the most since 1999 among those, respected crew chiefs, Ted Barrett, Greg Gibson, Tom hall, and Sam Holbrooke, Jerry meals, Jim Reynolds, Bill welke. So a lot of umpire faces will change for 2023. Nathan Navalny agreed to a two year deal with the Texas Rangers. They loaded up on their rotation. This off season, including the addition of Jacob de Grom, rich hill signed with a pirates, Michael conforto, gets two years with the San Francisco Giants and today the Dodgers are expected to announce their decision about whether or not to retain Trevor Bauer, who suspension has been truncated by an arbitrator's decision. "League roster are at least seem like fun guys, like colt Tucker seems like a good hang, so you at least have people you can like, but yeah. You really got to get invested in like you said, Hayes being as good in the field and probably better at the plate because hopefully his wrist is fully healed. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. He had a wrist injury and that can definitely SAP your ability to put the ball in here as a person. Yeah, so I think that and I know that he's a little dinged up with an ankle thing right now, but if you're a pirate strand and you're looking at his and you're like, what happened? You know, he probably isn't a 200 WRC plus hitter, but he's also probably not what he was last year when he still compromised. And if he's a 100 WRC plus hitter, I would a defense forget it. He's just really fun to watch but he's really great and very valuable because of it. So is Mitch Keller just the honorary pirates breakout pick until he breaks out finally or we all give up. Somehow forgot to pick a breakout pick for the pirates. I know I think your story about Mitch Keller is your interview with him, I guess. Was great. I've listened to that many times, believe it or not. And because I don't know, I found it really interesting and I found him really interesting and yeah, I don't know. I really hard these days. He's still having really hearty through 99, right? Yeah. Yeah. I never know what to make of his peripherals because either he's like way out pitching his fit, or he's way under pitching his vapor. One of these years, it's just going to equalize and maybe that'll be a good thing. Yeah, if I had to pick someone who I think is likely to have a better season than project it, I would both Bryce Wilson just because I think the stuff's there. You could do worse. If price Wilson is an average pitcher, like, let's say he pitches a hundred innings and puts up one war. That will 6 X the amount of work he's accumulated in the major leagues over, you know, more than zero seasons, over four different seasons. So I think that would count as a breakout. And if he's just okay, I think that's doable. He's got, I don't know, does he have two usable pitches? He has at least one usable pitch. And I think that I think that and a good approach and appropriate shielding from like getting put into bad situations, like going out there to face in order the third time when you're scuffling. Like just generally facing wrong handed hitters that high leverage points, that kind of stuff. If you combine good approach, one good pitch and good usage. I think that he could be an average player, and I think that would be a big deal because again, they didn't get him for much. Like that seems to be a theme of a lot of guys that I like for breakouts is that, hey, this is found money and if it works, it's going to be really good for the team. All right, well, to wrap this up, any rookies you want to highlight or is there such a thing as an interesting story surrounding the pirates disease? I think there are several. I'm going to just ignore the whole cruise thing. We get a manipulating his service time so they can pay him less money because I don't know that's in pursuit of bob nutting having more money in the long run. Can I take a second though to note that it feels particularly galling to me to do that when they will there's a nonzero chance they just end up trading him anyway, right? Like not immediately, but like this isn't a team that anyway, it doesn't matter. If you told me that he isn't going to be on this team like 7 years from now, I'd be like, yeah, sure. Right. I think it's more transparent than usual since they promoted him at the end of last year. And then or like he crapped, he looked like he belonged. So he needs to work on the defense. Right. They work a lot better when he hasn't already done that. It's really bad, and we're never going to get a straight answer out of them, right? Because it would be easy to grievance immediately. But it's very clear what they're doing. And I hope that he does file grievance because he should because it's ridiculous. So I don't know if he's going to be the most important rookie. He is actually the betting favorite for rookie of the year, but those people may underestimate the pirate's ability to hold him down. Yeah. I do think that Diego Castillo and to a lesser extent hoyt park, who is not a rookie anymore, I believe he used up his eligibility last year. They could both be pretty interesting. Yeah, he graduated. They could both be pretty interesting rookies. They're both kind of low power looking guys who the pirates got from the Yankees last year. And they both had big power breakouts.

"Swing and a line drive, that's a base hit right center field. Turner around third. Turn around his way to the plate. He's in to score Bellinger and RBI single here in the night and the Dodgers have taken a two one lead in game 5. Yep. And so that enabled the Dodgers to advance beyond the Giants in the division series and get to the national league championship series. And yesterday, they're down two to none, they're down three runs and in the 8th inning and then Bellinger gets to a high fastball, which is a pitch that has completely confounded this year. And he hits it three run Homer. And what a great moment, completely unexpected, if you've been watching him hit all year, it's really cool. What do you think? Yeah, look, it's the most well-known pitching approach in baseball this season. Cody Bellinger can't hit velocity, especially can't hit high velocity. He hit one 19. Against fastballs in the upper third of the strike zone. And that pitch wasn't even in the strike zone. It was above the strike zone. I don't know if you mentioned this earlier, but according to our ESPN stats crew, that pitch was 4.12 feet off the ground. We have data in the postseason going back to 2008. That was the highest pitch at 95 plus hit for a home run in the postseason since 2008. Unhittable pitch and he hit it out. And it was a reminder because it wasn't like, you know, he was like reaching up or it seemed unusual. He's just such a phenomenal athlete, and that's what Dodgers people have reminded me of time and time and time again when they talked about his struggles and where at some point he sit him down at some point, you drop in the lineup, you know, questions about what he's going to be going forward. They always come back to that the amazing athlete that he is. Yeah, no doubt. It makes you wonder if max muncy hadn't been hurt in that final day of the regular season is Cody Bellinger in the lineup. I guess he could have been playing center field. Maybe it's Chris Taylor. I don't know, but with Muncie out, they had no choice, but to play a ballinger as bad as he was during this season. And who knows that hit yesterday may have saved their season? Yeah. There's no question about it. They're alive. They would have been three O. He gets the big home run. They go on and win. And after the game, when Luke Jackson was asked about that pitch, I loved his response to basically like diet diet. I don't second guess myself on that pitch. Yeah, no, it was the right pitch. I mean, I know I looked at the numbers. Yeah, with two strikes, Jackson, he's a fastball slider guy. He does usually throw a slider about two thirds of the time. But again, with ballinger's hole on those high fastballs, I think it was the right pitch. It was almost a waste pitch. I think it was a one two count. You know, you throw that pitch a hundred times. I don't know if Bellinger hits it, you know, 99 other times, but he hit it the one time, and that's all that matters. Yeah, now the braves have recent history of blowing a lead against the Dodgers. They had three to one in the NLCS last year. Of course, I just don't feel like there's necessarily carryover from this win. In other words, the Dodgers could win today and they could go on and win the world go on and win this series and it wouldn't be a shocker. But I don't see these brave team kind of folding up. What about you? No, I don't think so. I mentioned this. Remember last year, yeah, they had a two O lead and then a three one series lead, but their rotation was a mess. You know, last year, they had to start Kyle Wright and game three, and then it was Bryce Wilson and game four, you know, they didn't have Charlie Morton on the team. So yeah, they have a bullpen game today, that certainly a question mark. But then you come back with max freed and game 5. He's been absolutely dominant really the last three plus months. You know, and if you get back to a game 7, you know, you got Charlie Morton again. So there's still a much, much better shape than they were a year ago. Yeah, max freed is going to be pitching on full rest in game 5. And then if there's a game 6 or there will be at least the game 6, no, we don't know that for sure. If there is a game 6, Ian Anderson would be pitching at home. And then if there's a game 7, you get Charlie Morton pitching at home. So if you like the braves you like the fact that if the Dodgers are going to beat you, they're going to have to do it in Atlanta. Yeah, no doubt. And despite the win, the Dodger offense, you know, clearly not clicking, you know, obviously they miss max muncy, the Turner's really have to come up and do something, you know? I don't know if Cody Bellinger's gonna keep hitting three run homers for you. So Justin Turner, trade Turner, they gotta start hitting. That to me is the key for the Dodgers rest of the series. The Astros and the Red Sox now tied at two all after that game last night. And I think we should start with this. About what happened in that game. What an incredible job by the Houston bullpen. Dave, I thought when Zack ranke is walking off the mound in the second inning, I'm like, they're done. There's no way they can again survive a start from a guy who opens the game for them. They've in four games they've gotten 6 and two thirds inning from their starting pitchers. It's crazy. Yeah, how is this series tied, right? If you were just given that number, how many innings Houston starters have gone, you're like, oh, it's a sweep. This series is over. You know, and it's funny. I got an email from a friend of mine in the die hard Red Sox fan before the game and he said, Red Sox fans are way too happy right now. It's only two to one. This series is not over. And as we saw in baseball, anything can happen, you know, Christian Javier was the real key coming in long relief. Kendall graveman through two and a, you know? And give some props here to obviously the players first and foremost, but dusty baker, you know, kind of for a 72 year old old school manager adjusting to the modern way of managing a playoff game..

And he was like is that okay. I'm like yeah. Just walk with me and act like you belong here and we went and we walked out and i think we probably interviewed Jack bryson and sam nicholson at the end of the game..

"You would think the decent setup. I just think you have to be very very careful if e. r. a. n. e. r. Meltdown would really think you. Because that is the risk here with your mayo. So i would let that dictate whether or not go for him. I would lean no in avoiding this But if you can if you can avoid if you can withstand potential ra blow up and you wanna take the shot at the win here you can go for. But that's that unique situation. Only that i would start yarbrough. What about you. Yeah i mean. I love ryan yarborough but considering the blow up potential and the lack of strikeouts. I don't see what i would. The point is trying to start in here hoping to thread that needle for the win. Yeah yeah exactly. it's just there's so much can go wrong in the so little upside here. That it's just not worth it. So i i yeah. He's one of those guys. Were i think i'd rather start nicoletta. Rather savall air edward vera. I might rather go alexi in the middle role there then then then you are right now with the way he's pitching so i'm with you. There gotta be careful. I might even rather go with this guy. Bryce wilson a favorite of ours in previous years. He's now with pittsburgh He's been okay with them as last outing was unfortunately pretty bad against washington. Five earned in four hundred thirty four thirty five. Era in six starts with pittsburgh before that but that three homer affair boosted his era up to five. Oh nine he gets miami at miami so great venue great setup. Is it enough to lorient on bryce wilson. Yeah i think it is. You know the the last start was disappointing on enemy and even two previous to that were great Than other three earth one. I mean it's based on quality star. Busy like quotas are not gonna tunnel strikeouts recently. Either so i think it's It's definitely a risky start. But i i do put him above your right now. Because i think you can't you can't get some strikeouts He's not really been string out. Many their volatile right with wilson's zero seven. One seven one four zero so it's an all or nothing situation he could strike out six or seven or you can go zero to like. It's wild. how inconsistent bryce wilson.
