"This is the play of the day. Check this out. The pit swung on, hit the right field and the bellies are gonna lead it. Yeah, they are Bryce Harper. Has put the Phillies on top with a two run home run over the out of town scoreboard. Simply amazing Harper here at home. Has homered on back to back swings. Listen at this. Crazy. That's courtesy of the Phillies radio network. That's your play in the day. Yeah, they are. You know, if you're, if your Bryce Harper and your ass, if Lance mccullers was tipping his pitches. Why not say, yeah,

"And yeah, there should be some passion. This doesn't have to be boring boring. It's just more people like you. You have been running around tight pants. It's Mookie betts, but Daniel Bardot. Steve aoki. There's salt to the mafia. This is brothel. Hey, this is John Lester. Baseball is baseball baseball isn't boring. Welcome to baseball isn't boring. Here's your host. Rob ratford. Baseball is not boring. This has been proven time and time again. It's been proven the last few days. Thanks to the World Series, we've been proven because the postseason has been proven because the great baseball season we've seen has been proven because of social media and today we're approving it with an interview with Jonathan papa and all time Phillies save leaders also happens to be all time Red Sox save leaders, but we're talking about the Phillies for talking about Philadelphia. What's it like to play in Philadelphia? He had a very complicated time in Philadelphia, papal Bond did. And of course, of course, of course, there is Bryce Harper. There is Bryce Harper, the Bryce Harper conversation. This is going to be the thing that you're going to want to listen to when it comes to papal Bond talking about this confrontation with Bryce Harper of course a few years ago when they got in a fight at both members of the Washington Nationals in the dugout. You're going to be surprised what papal Bond said. I'm just going to say that. You're going to be surprised. All right, it's a good interview. I want to get right to it. Also, real quick, contest. You're listening to this on Halloween. You still have time, give us at BB isn't boring, you're on Twitter, on Instagram, give us a photo of your best baseball theme costume. Kids, parents, pets. I don't care. We don't care. Whatever it is, at BB isn't boring. Please pass them along. And the grand prize for the best for the best photo. It's a good one. It's two tickets to opening day of any park you want. And any park you want. There you go. And the top 5 will send baseballs and boring t-shirts, shout out swing juice once again, you go to swing fuse to get those t-shirts or you can go to the app BB is boring social accounts and find them there. But it's a good time to have a contest. It's a good time to dress up. It's a good time to do an interview. And real quick. Real quick. Can I vent this little second before we get to the paddleboard interview? Bed for a second. Okay, congratulations to pat hober, right? Congratulations to him. The home plate ump for game two. Perfect game. Perfect game. Didn't miss a call. It's unbelievable. I think that you can't be highlighting this enough. Great job. We rail on the umpire so much, especially at big moments in the postseason. He should be highlighted. Now, he graded out the best of any umpire behind the play all year long. I am baffled by this. I have been baffled even before this. I understand there's a rotation. And I just tweeted, I said, if holberg is best, why isn't he behind home plate for every game of the World Series? It's like having Mike trial hit 9th a day after launching four home runs. All right. For those who don't understand or don't realize, I understand there's a rotation. Right now the rotation does not have him behind home plate again, the rest of the World Series. So the best guy in your game is going to be umpiring one game behind the plate at home for the World Series. One game. And the game that he did, by the way, it was a perfect game. And you're not going to run him out there again because you have this rotation. And a lot of people would say, well, you can't throw them out there every game will get worn down. All right, this just assumed that that's correct. But how do you have this guy only slotted for one game behind home plate? It's not only just this one game that he did really, really well. It's all year long. He was the best. He was the best. So anyway, listen, I mean, this is what makes baseball so great. They sort of conversations, something like this comes up all the time. I enjoy the debate. I enjoy the conversation. And I really enjoyed sitting down with Philadelphia Phillies all time save leader, Jonathan on. If there is one former Philly, I would love to talk. There's a lot of them. I would say this. This is the guy that I want to talk to. In this post, I'm not just saying that because we just talked to him because of his perception of the Philadelphia market and also because the Bryce Harper stuff and we also get into framed frame or Valdez, swiping his wrist, his hand, whatever, and how that dynamic is palpable and talks a little bit about how he views that and of course celebrations. Celebrations because you know what? When you have a guy jumping around and a kilt with a beer box on his head, that guy knows how to celebrate. All right, well, subscribe, follow. Listen, leave a nice review so far. Everyone has been great, leaving nice reviews. Joe Kelly, Alex corb, the whole works, we're gonna keep cracking them out. We're gonna have them after every game here on in for the World Series after game three, Nick punto is gonna join hopefully Courtney, cooping myself, I'll be on the boots on the ground, down Philadelphia. So a lot to look forward to, but today you get to look forward to a Jonathan papelbon get together. Here you go. Who's pat? All right, there's nobody I would rather be talking to right now than the person whose brand has never been hotter. The owner of the papel brand, Jonathan papelbon, what's going on, man? What's happening, brother? All right. Let's go. All right, welcome to this plausible boring. We had asked you why baseballs and boring before, and you said because you have grown men wearing tight pants, which is actually in our open, congratulations. So having watched baseball all year, you can, it feels like baseball though is still entertaining, correct? Oh, look at the World Series.

"All right, John, thanks so much. We appreciate that. Boy, what a week for technology earnings. And if you think about it since the great financial crisis, it just seems to me that technology has been the leader in this market. I wonder after this week's action, if that's still the case, let's talk to a couple of experts about that. Dan, I've seen your equity analyst at Wedbush securities, a Penn State alum is probably more to the point as a facial Ohio State this weekend. Plus mandeep Singh. Bloomberg intelligence. Join us here. We're going to round table at Katie to talk some big technology. Hey, Dan, I want to start with you. Again, I kind of feel like this market, the leadership has been technology, technology, technology. Is there any reason to think that after this week's earnings that may not be the case going forward? Well, it's a great question. Clearly, this was a horror week for big tech. Outside of the Apple. And obviously, you're seeing the stocks reflect that I think as we get through this rough patch, they continue to lead actually as we go on the other side is downturn. Look, no doubt. I mean, blooms come off to release your big tech and now it's a bifurcation. I mean, you have the Microsoft the apple versus disaster situations like meta and others. And not all are going to go up. And I think that's really what we're seeing here. But Dan, how much of a bright spot was Apple truly? Because I know that revenue profit, they both beat expectations. That was the headline, but they also warned of a holiday slowdown. You'd sales of iPhone services a little bit lighter than expected. The stock, I mean, definitely compared to its peers upright spot, but is it worth a 5% rally today? I think relative to seeing big tech, I'd call it a Bryce Harper type of quarter. And guidance because if you strip away currency, they beat and actually guide higher. And I think that's what the street when investors are greening, the underlying demand story still relatively tough on. Of course, we're on the edges demand issues, services as well. But I think that's really the headline here. And by the way, how is a higher state of 15 and a half point favorite over Penn State? I'm just looking at that right now. I'm going to take a look. I'm going to do some work on that later this year. Talk to us about the digital advertising space. I think I look at the numbers of Google, Facebook, again, I'm old school, so I'm going with those names. And even Amazon's advertising space, it is, it's been such a great secular growth story as all the advertising dollars come from some traditional media into digital. Any reason to think that that's not such a strong case anymore or was this just the weakness we saw in some of this digital ad spend numbers just to focus of hey it's a cyclical business? It is and I think to give you a data point, the vendors that actually outperformed in the digital ad space this quarter was Pinterest. It exceeded expectations, the arpu growth was positive. They didn't have as much of ad pricing headwinds as some of the other vendors that talked about. And look, this is a classic case of expectations coming down and then the company beating estimates. And so now that it's happened with alphabet and SnapChat, and look, this space is cyclical. It's going to come back. Maybe I think 2023 is priced in at this point of time. And as we go along, if it's not of a deep recession or anything like that, these companies will outperform their numbers going forward. Mandeep, it is so wild to hear you say that about Pinterest because speaking is the center of my own universe. I think about my average life. I never use Pinterest. I used it to help plan my wedding maybe 6 years ago at the fringes. It would have been a core use. No. No, I don't even know what it's used for. I mean, who's the average Pinterest user? How are they possibly crushing it? Yeah, so look, in terms of DAUs, Pinterest, like USD AU is around 23 million. Contrast that with SnapChat, 100 million U.S. DEA us and Facebook, Instagram is around 200 million. So clearly, they cater to a niche audience, but the thing is, one they have launched this new app called shuffles that seems that has seen some traction and also they operate across the funnel. Top of the funnel, lower funnel. So they have a lot of first party data to cater to the different types of ads. And with the management change, they had recently, they just seem to have gotten their act together now. Is it sustainable in terms of user growth? Probably not. I still think it's a niche social media app, but the fact that they're executing well in their core audience is a good sign for the rest of the social media space. Hey, Dan, you've been one of the leading technology bulls on Wall Street and you've been very right, how are you positioning in a sector now and maybe what are the names that you're going to be talking about over the next three to 6 months with your clients? Yes. I mean, we're hand holding through this downturn specifically navigating towards software, diverse security. I still think Microsoft here in large cap Salesforce.com. Cybersecurity resilient and then we're really seeing that memes like pow out or checkpoint tenable crowd strike Z scale or another. And I think apple and large caps are going to get more and more of those large cap dollars because cook's pilot in the plane. Zuckerberg, that was more of a Ted striker airplane moment in terms of that conference call. And I think that's what investors really gleaned from this week. You want to bet on the Dell in cook and not Zuckerberg betting on metaverse for 2030. All right, and then Dan, I just put in TW TR into my terminal and I got nothing back. It's gone. Elon owns it. So we're going to have to see how that we're going to see how that plays out, won't we? Official today must go into Twitter. And as I said, the easy part was buying Twitter from us. The hard part is going to be fixing it and that's really going to be front and center. A lot of questions need to be answered, but just another part of the Elon ecosystem in The Twilight Zone finally is over. Exactly right. Well, good luck. Hopefully your head not the happy value this morning. Good for you. Enjoy. All right, have a good time, higher stay at Penn State, go PSU. Dan, there with Wedbush securities, and mandeep Singh from Bloomberg intelligence. Right now let's sit down and Washington, D.C. world of national news with Nathan hinkley. Can we continue to follow developments this morning, Paul after an early morning break in at House speaker Nancy Pelosi's home that put her husband Paul in the hospital just getting this headline crossing the Bloomberg terminal that U.S. capitol police are assisting the FBI in the investigation into this break in, got word of it this morning from a spokesman for speaker Pelosi saying an assailant broke into the couple San Francisco home and violently assaulted Paul Pelosi, the statement goes on to say he is expected to make a full recovery, the suspect is under arrest, police are still investigating the motive, the statement says speaker Pelosi was not home at the time, but again, U.S. capitol police are assisting the FBI with the investigation. "And the team. Bryce, if it so many big home runs, had so many big moments, but the one tonight, the home run that puts this team in the World Series. Tell me what that means to you. Yeah. I mean, my teammates tell you the truth. They keep me going every day. They keep me fired up. They keep me moving. They're the reason why we're here. Not just myself, but everybody in here. Reese Hoskins, unbelievable homers today yesterday. JT room Muto is fingers unbelievable. Zack whaler through the crap out of it today as well. And this fan base, are you kidding me? Let's go. So the very last question, Tom, is what are you expecting, man? What are you about to cover this World Series? You've seen it all. You've chronicled it all. What the hell are we about to get here? Yeah, I think we're getting moments here in this World Series. I mean, it's going to pivot around Bryce Harper because he's just so hot and so good right now. And I say pivot because there are times when I think if Houston is smart, they will not let Bryce Harper beat them. So I always use this analogy. Like back in the day when Lawrence Taylor was doing his thing for the Giants on defense, right? If you were a quarterback or an offensive coordinator, you would have to account for Lawrence Taylor on every play. Like, where is he this time? What's he doing? Is he dropping back? Is he rushing? All these things that he would just influence a play before the ball was snapped. That to me is Bryce Harper in this series. You know, you look at the Astros, they'll be counting the spots to when he comes up in the lineup. Is there somebody on base? They don't really have matchup lefties in their bullpen. They're ready to get out lefties just as well as righties, but right now dusty baker is thinking about when the game is on the line. What am I doing with Bryce Harper? Who are the guys that I want to pitch to Bryce Harper? Is it Abreu? Is it Javier? Is it Presley early? I mean, whatever that answer is, it will dictate where this series goes. So there's a moment where they have to avoid him or maybe there's a moment where they have to pitch him and he comes through. But I do think he's the folk room on which this series turns. And we just break out the popcorn watch. Tom verducci, the man who is warned us about everything that has happened over this last postseason over 13 years ago. Thank you so much for joining us. My pleasure really enjoyed it. For more Tom verducci, you can check out his latest book, the book of Joe, trying not to suck at baseball and life with Joe Maddon. I'm Pablo Torre. On over 2 million eligible items, holidays start with The Home Depot. How doers get more done? So Tom last year, Bryce Harper wins MVP again. And the Phillies, despite that, they barely finish over 500. They missed the playoffs, and then this season, the Phillies get off to a truly abysmal start, they fire Joe Girardi, their manager, midseason, and then in the summer, Bryce Harper injures his thumb, he has surgery on that thumb, and he misses 52 games in all. And it's not until late August that he returns right as the Phillies are making this push into the postseason. So what did Harper's return mean for this team? Well, I'll tell you what happened was when he came back from that thumb injury. And I've talked to Kevin long the hidden coach about this. He was protecting his hand. Kevin will tell you he needed every bit of that last. I think it was 5 weeks to just get confident with his thumb and his hand, he was not hitting for power at the end of the season when he came back. He was not turning on the ball. He was not there was no pull power in Bryce Harper's game. That flipped in the postseason. Now, it was partly a result of getting those at bats and getting back in there and realizing that the thumb is okay. And he can really control the barrel. But it's also as Kevin long said, a matter of flipping the switch. Now that's how good Bryce Harper is because we've all been told you can't do that. This feels like something that I am immediately skeptical of top. Yeah, you can't do it. We've all heard that, right? You can't just flip the switch. But Kevin long swears, this is one guy who can do it. That in this environment now where it's short season, it's tournament time, back in travel ball, and when San Diego or in Vegas, wherever he's playing, where it's winter go home, it's bringing out the best in Bryce Harper. And it's not so much the spotlight as it is the opportunity to win. I think that's what's driving him. He loves this group of guys. They're playing loose. I mean, if you're around the Phillies the way I've been, man, it feels like a college team. It really does, and I don't veer link the center Fielder said this as well. He said, I feel like I'm back in college. They look like they're having so much fun. Exactly. They're having fun, they're goofy, they have these stupid songs that have become anthems for them. After the game, they have the smoke machines that just go ball and the mirrors and lights and all this stuff. Everything is loose. And Bryce is really enjoying that. You know, really the most interesting thing is dad told me was that all he wanted for Bryce Harper was for his son to be happy. And he thought now watching him play in this postseason. It's really the first time he is seeing that on his face and his eyes and his body language since back in 2009 when he was playing on the USA 18 and under national team. Because on that team where guys like Manny Machado, nikkei, Jameson tyone, people know who he was, but he was surrounded by stars and it was about putting on the Jersey with USA on it and going out there and trying to be Cuba, right? It wasn't about free agency. It wasn't about where you're playing next. It wasn't about, can you win an MVP or a home run title? It was about can we win? And it was interesting for his dad to say, all I ever wanted was to see that again, that looseness of just playing for the joy of winning and being surrounded by teammates and he's back there. You know, he's basically back to when he was 17 years old with the way he plays the game so free. The idea the implication, then, that Bryce Harper, despite the rise, the MVPs, the hundreds of millions of dollars, the fame, the accolades, all of that. Until now, not since you had seen him when he was a teenager, how do you actually been happy? It's kind of staggering Tom. I mean, the idea that this is an athlete who just didn't find as much joy in the doing of the job, even as he was doing it so successfully. Well, I think that's right. It does sound staggering, but I wouldn't say he wasn't happy. I just think he's God to a whole different level. And there's so much freedom now attached to the way that he carries himself. I can tell you me personally, I saw that right away in this postseason. And it was just, it's hard to describe, but it is a look in his eyes the way he carries himself and that's I went to rob Thompson who's been with him now for a few years. Yeah, the current manager of the Phillies. And I said, am I wrong or am I seeing a more relaxed, comfortable Bryce Harper? He said, no, you're absolutely right. I see the same thing. It's hard to describe you around them. You see it. So yeah, it's there. And I want to say that he wasn't happy before, but I think now he's happy for the right reasons. Yeah, I mean, I'm watching him postgame, talking to you, talking into this microphone in front of this packed delirious and absolutely hammered ballpark. And he sounds, he sounds like he's running for office. Grace, you signed here 13 years. You said no opt outs. I want a long-term home, Philly will be my long-term home. When did you believe that a night like this could happen for you and this franchise? I think we always believed, right? There was no emotion or anything that it wasn't going to happen that we weren't going to be back and have this opportunity to be here and with this team with this organization with these fans with this city. We got four more. Let's go get it. It sounds like Bryce Harper knows exactly what the fan base wants to hear and he just looks like he's in a comfort zone as a public figure as a charismatic leader that was jumping off the screen to me. That's interesting. You said that because we'll go back to the quote in the SI story back when he was 16 saying he wanted to be the greatest player ever. What happened to that quote machine, right? Right. But I will tell you this. I spoke with him, I forget which game it was. It was after one of his good games and LCS and I said, man, I said, is this like the best you felt at the plate? What does it feel like? What's going on in the batter's box? I said, honestly, he said, I don't even analyze it right now. He said, I'm getting in the box. I'm going to work. I'm trying to do my best. And he said, I'm just in this zone and I'm leaving it at that. I'm not trying to step away from anything and look big picture or analyze anything. It really is that simple. I tell you that story because that politician speak that you think you saw there, that's just where he is right now. I really believe that. I don't think he's trying to hide something. I think he's just in this very different place that's very simple. He's had simplified things. And that includes the way his quotes and the way he addresses questions. I mean, you've heard him throughout this postseason, right? If you ask Bryce a question right now, he will turn it into an answer about his teammates

"But I did get the sense that if this can happen in other sports, why can't it happen to baseball where somebody is this good this young and kind of just shrinks that development clock. So it wasn't forecasting necessarily what a ceiling was going to be. It was how good how young Bryce Harper was. Yeah, and I want to read a little bit of what you wrote in that story to make that point. You said that golf has Tiger Woods, basketball has LeBron James. Hockey had Wayne Gretzky, military history, had Alexander the Great. But baseball like jazz is a discipline that does not easily engender prodigies. And then you asked Bryce Harper about his goals as a ballplayer, and you said that he replied with certainty this way. Quote, be in the Hall of Fame, definitely be considered the greatest baseball player who ever lived. I can't wait. End quote. And when you're listening to a 16 year old, you've never met before tell you that he wants to be just the greatest who's ever done it. What are you thinking at that point? Oh, youthful confidence. It's a wonderful thing. Really, I mean, the way he said it, I mean, if you just saw the quote, you'd think, man, this guy's just full of it. He's just a braggart, right? Yes. It was just total confidence. You know, it's funny. During the playoffs, I talked to Blake's now the Padres. And he played against Bryce and travel ball. And of course, he remembers Bryce back then. He started playing against each other when they were ten. And he said, Bryce was head and shoulders above everybody else. But he said kids on the team were saying, there's that Bryce Harper kid, he's always in the cage with his dad. They were like trying to run them down. That's all he wants to do is play baseball. But that's like a compliment. Yes, super talented, I get it, but based on those quotes from what you just read from that story. And what he was like and even ten and 11 years old, dedicated to being not just a baseball player, but a great baseball player. I mean, the other thing I hear when I listen to that quote, trying to not know anything about what would happen thereafter is I think of just, oh, this kid's arrogant. This kid's kind of maybe an hole. Tell me though about his upbringing his parents, the guy that he wanted to just be in the cage with all the time. Yeah, his dad, Ron was an iron worker on the Vegas strip building a lot of the buildings you see there and as blue collar as it gets. His mom's sherry, he's got his sister. He's got another brother who has played minor league baseball a pitcher. It was sort of like a role model for him, older brother. His dad would have Bryce swinging these heavy metal rebars that he used at work to develop his muscles and his swing. Bryce was the kind of guy he was always playing against older competition, right? I mean, he was getting on a plane of playing any travel tournaments when he was ten and 11 years old. Quite a ball player right there. That's a large 12 year old right there. So far, what I think I've gathered, he's about 6 one and somewhere around a 170 pounds at 12 years old. Playing for teams in California and teams and not just in Vegas, but all across the west. Right, I mean, his mom sherry talked about this in those early travel baseball days. He loves to travel. Because he loves the tournaments. I mean, there's been many times that he'll come home on a Sunday after having ten games for the weekend and he'll only be home for an hour and he'll say, hey dad, let's go hit. And I'm like, are you kidding me? Generally, he's playing at least an age or a two ages up. And this happened obviously when he graduated early from high school, he took the GED test to make himself draft eligible earlier, played one year in JC. In junior college he's playing with a wood bat at what? 16 years old, 16 and a half years old against geyser 18, 1920, and more than a holding his eyes a star. So he was kind of, I don't want to say groomed. I just think this is what he wanted to be. And his dad was really a big part of it. After the story comes out, right? And he's 16 and the quotes in the cover RS such. How would you describe the reaction? Well, I think people saw him then as a target of criticism. We tend not to embrace people. I mean, we put people on pedestals and then it seemed to enjoy when they fall, right? And I know that happened in his minor league career. I remember going to see him, I think it was in Hagerstown in class a ball. And fans, especially if he's playing on the road and sometimes even at home, knew who he was. And that just doesn't happen in baseball. You don't have celebrity minor league players in baseball, right? Unless it's Michael Jordan years ago. So yeah, when I saw was the world really knew who he was, sometimes closing it on him. Definitely hypercritical of a guy who is still a teenager. I mean, my goodness, can you imagine the rest of us growing up as teenagers with the wall, the world pointing out our faults and mistakes? I know. I'm trying to remember being 16 and I thought he bore it well. But yeah, I think the reaction was this kid can't possibly be that good. Let's see if we can tear him down.

"With it. I didn't either, but of course it did cross my mind when Harper came to the play. I'm like, remember, remember 2017 Orioles fans? Remember a baldo? Now, Suarez is a lot better than a bulldog, but man. It's like having Britain out there. You don't want to leave Britain out there. But here's the thing you got to remember that the game wasn't even over. Pods came back in the 9th two put two guys on by the way, why am I forgetting center Fielder's name? Killing me here for the Padres. Grisham. Grisham, thank you, my God. Grisham laying down a dime sac bunt with runners on first and second with their closer on the mound. I mean, Grisham does not sack bunt every day. In fact, none of us do. I was more impressed with that sack bunt than just about anything else he did in the playoffs. And he had a great playoff. He had a great play outs. At the Edo, the crazy part is I think he's going for a drag bunt for a hit. And you know how it is when it's wet like that. I mean, anything could happen. It just so happened, he ended up butting it a little bit too close to the pitcher where he's able to kind of set his feet, make the throw that he needed to. And I didn't have a problem with that too. There were a lot of people, listen, as you know, when you're struggling, when you're all for a series and you come up in a spot with a left hand as a left handed hitter facing a left handed pitcher at that point. You're trying to do anything you can to help your ball club. And if that means dragging a blunt or putting a bunt down in a situation where it's late and a lot of people would swing away, you do it. You're trying to do anything you can to help the ball club and he chose to do it, boat meld and have an issue with it. I didn't have an issue with it. I thought it was a winning play. I thought so too. I thought it was a great, I didn't even see, I didn't even know it was an attempt of drag. I thought it was just a Late Show because there was runners on first and second. And I thought he got the job done. And if that was the call, I love the call because for multiple reasons. One, putting some serious pressure on the defense and have we mentioned what to make a play. And let's not forget the previous pitcher through three wild pitches in a row because the weather was cold, damp, everything about it, I loved it. I thought like, yeah, make them make a play. Force them to get you out. I think most baseball people had no issue with that play. Yeah. I loved it. If you're feeling down and having trouble getting up in the morning, here's a tip.

It's 17 minutes past the hour, we update markets every quarter hour here on Bloomberg radio. So China has ended its streak of yuan fixings near 7.11 per U.S. dollar, but that doesn't mean it's not a much stronger than expected fix from what the market was expecting. The market estimate was 7 1962, the PBOC came in at 7 1230 per U.S. dollar, and we're trading back to the weak side of the range we've been in this morning to see an H is now right around 7 27 against the greenback and we'll be getting the onshore in about 12 minutes or so the last trade there was at 7 23 O 6. The boomer dollar spot is stronger this morning, normally that's bad for risk assets. But we are seeing some pretty sharp rallies across the region. The nikkei up 1.2% the ASX 200 in Sydney up about 1.8% strong rallies in Seoul as well. It costs me up about one and a third percent. We saw shares open higher in most of the markets and the U.S. futures as well are up about a third of the percent, trading in currencies is pretty choppy this morning again has swung between gains and losses. It appears that there was a second intervention from Japanese authorities in the second session and that's what we heard from the Nike this morning. Not long ago, the dollar yen figure was right up around one 49 and change, and we went all the way down to one 46 and changed, but it has weakened again at the moment all again, one 48 95. "Sports show where we explore the big money issues in the world of sports I'm Michael Barnes And I'm Mike lynch And let's continue our conversation on the MLB lockout and look at the legal side of the situation but joined by Martin edel he is the chair of gules and stores sports law practice and an adjunct instructor at Columbia law school Martin thank you so much for joining us Thank you for the opportunity of speaking with both of you Martin why would baseball order the teams to take down images of players during this lockup For instance Bryce Harper was the MVP of the national league as a big banner at Citizens Bank ballpark and they were ordered to take it down Basically eliminating all name image and likeness with ownership gain an advantage by keeping his image up on the ballpark To me that can cut both ways Mike By taking down the image they're preventing Bryce Harper from realizing any licensing fees or other types of revenues he may gain from promoting his name image or likeness But it also affects the team which is trying to do that and ostensibly has a deal with Bryce harbor to license his name image and likeness What I don't understand is the whole hang up about sponsorships What I don't understand how that can be infected and how that is shut down So that's another great question Professional athletes have a limited life in the sand that they play that you can excel for a period of time but eventually age creeps up And they're no longer as viable as stars or viable as professional athletes So they seek to monetize their right as early as they can for as much as they can And by telling sponsors hey we're not going to permit the licensing to go forward You're taking a deep cut into a player's ability to monetize his name image and likeness With the result that they're trying it's an economic tool to try to force the players to come back to the bargaining table on terms favorable to the owners Martin the free agency I think is probably the number one sticking point here The 6 years or 5 should there be a work stoppage is there always a concession that time loss can be credited to a player for instance if he's hit 5 and a half years in and they don't start playing until August of next year That's going to be a subject of intense bargaining whether or not they should credit the player back You will remember back to 2015 with Chris Bryant And of course the cubs did not let Bryant go to the major lease I think it was until the second month of the season and therefore they didn't under the existing rules The cubs did not have to credit Bryant with that particular year That's being accredited towards the free agency time period by an arbitrated that issue was lost So instead of being a 6 year term it became a 7 year term for Brian And here too if the work stoppage well the lockout continues into the year and then there's no time made up and that's not the subject of bargaining that comes out favorable to the players The players may lose some players who would otherwise be eligible for the full year credit towards free agency may find that they're not getting that credit Baseball commissioner rob Manfred said that he believes that an off season lockouts the best mechanism to protect the 2022 season and they hope that the lockout will jump start the negotiations Do you agree with that Martin No A lockout is a very serious economic tactic It's perfectly permissible under the national labor relations act just like a strike is perfectly permissible under the national labor relations act But you look at what happened they had a 7 minute session That didn't bode well for future discussions And the question really becomes how interested is each party in coming back to the table and on what terms Yeah I was supposed to be 9 hours and it wound up being just 7 minutes Right Right So as you probably know pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report around February 15 and exhibition games are scheduled to commence February 26 Given the holiday schedule that's really just around the corner Will the party's comeback to bargain in earnest Will they be able to complete what are going to be complex negotiations before that time is really up in the air Yes there's an advantage to starting during the off season That's probably one of the reasons that the collective bargaining agreement expired during the off season But there's no guarantee that they'll be able to complete these complex negotiations in two and a half months with all the holidays in play Martin at the commissioner said on Thursday that in 1994 baseball made a mistake by starting the season without a collective bargaining agreement and he said we will not make that mistake again Does that sound like something that is very inflexible to you Yes There are other leagues which start the season when they think they've made sufficient progress on a new collective bargaining agreement that they think they're going to bring it across the finish line Taking a hard line position saying we're not going to reopen our doors And get rid of the lockout until we have.

The dodgers have and i've been proven wrong. So the last forty four games or wants soda august fifth through last night. Forty four games. He has fifty four hits fifty-five walks twenty strikeouts fifty five over twenty strikeouts in the last four games. He's hitting four hundred in that time. Karl with a five. Seventy two on base percentage two homers yesterday. Three for three draws a walk. Five days ago. I was ready to call up the national p. Coversation just give it to bryce harper. Good lord juan. Soto's unbelievable. yeah. I mean you know. Sort of flavors of monks and tattoos was that guy obviously early in the season in the nfl. Mvp was over I again. I know he get it but because of the tv plays on. Like i. i've i've fallen into the max. Scherzer cy young max scherzer. Mvp where we're seeing something. We've never seen from pitcher before and now we're seeing want so tap on the shoulder and say hold on a second. Let's not forget about me. and how how. I've been so good and here. I am again so yeah it's been it's been crazy I don't know buster. How i would if i had a vote vote. Mvp with regards to harper with regards to sherzer with regards to soto with regards to techy. It's a really fascinating race in. It's partly because none of them. And i don't mean them but nobody has grabbed the mvp race and similarly the american league otani had grabbed it known that kinda changed here down the stretch So yeah i mean look so does that homerun derby and seemingly has just exploded mistaken wrath which i hope gives nationals fans. You know reason for optimism. Moving forward like we have that guy. He's so young. We're gonna be okay. This this year was terrible. We traded everybody. But we're going to be okay. Yeah he reminds me just having spent some time with them and watch them. Go through pre-game workouts. He reminds me so much of tony. Gwynn and how precisely is about his regimen. But here's one difference between the two. He hits for power at a younger age. And which is why. We always make the comparisons to tony. Gwynn's good friends with juan soto. And that is ted williams. I four hundred fifty. Five games of once sodas career. He's numbers are almost identical to those. At ted williams soto ninety eight homers. Three hundred fifty nine walks. Ted williams ninety six homers. Three hundred. Sixty seven walks in carl. I think ted williams. If he were alive he'd be the first one to tell you. You know what the pitching the want. Soto faces isn't even close in the idea that you have a in a quarter of a baseball season almost have a three to one walk to strikeout ratio not strikeout-to-walk walk to strikeout ratio is insane in two thousand twenty one buster look at all. The numbers are great. Ted williams comparisons great. What what what has always struck me about settled in speaking with him or just watching him but more so speaking with him the maturation a lot of people looked the postseason to couple of years ago. When he was doing his he's gyrations but still was able to perform as almost like an act. That's kind of arrived. we'll get to watch it now. We're going to dismiss It's it's it's not an act and there is there is a maturity about him which is remarkable his patients his dedication to the craft. At tony gwynn. You mentioned the ted williams and wade boggs. There's another one You know and they were. They all it predominantly from the left side He he has this this this craft that he wants to master and he's not going to be satisfied as a young twenty year old. I don't think. I think he recognizes what he's capable of and rather than just rest on it. He's shown in the first few years this desire to keep getting better. If you're swinging at good pitches if you're disciplined if you have the power if you have his legs which has and he gets down into them. He's going to be good for a long time. Each has shown through his words and his actions. He wants to be historically great. And and that's where those guys that you mentioned to me I continue the comparison. He eats it is. It's wonderful because he's also embracing look the dude loves baseball and that that you can see and that's what i mean. I love that about him. Loves it we got ninety sags left. I want to ask you about this major league. Baseball's experimenting with pre-tax baseball's at some aaa game during the last stretch the minor league. This according to confirmation from mlb after her story was reported by baseball america. Carl i cannot believe how long this conversation's been going on about the service of the baseball. We actually don't have something that everyone's agreed to like. That's amazing to me. So they're trying this thing. We're obviously going to have a conversation. The off season about sticky substance. I'm not gonna use the pitcher's name. But i don't think it's fair. I don't want to single him out. But i've seen a superstar pitcher in recent weeks basically when he works during the game. It's like he's unloading his saliva glands on every ball he gets a name by the way is i've had coaches and managers point to me is illegal but because everyone is trying to find the right feel on the baseball. They're all looking the other way. I've seen pictures in recent weeks. I think it's pretty clear that using some kind of sunscreen because they're doing that forearm thing that we saw for a few years everyone trying to find some kind of feel on the baseball. How did we get to this point at this point because of the inability of tucson's to figure out what's do it's seems quite clear. Major league baseball is committed to introducing a new baseball next year. And one that they're going to know they're gonna design. Gordo peres talks about coming back to the olympics. And saying they have it already exists. We could use that one And and that's not. That's not going to happen. There may be one exactly like it but they're not using that one But it's it's. I think it's fairly obvious to see some of the guys who were using substances. That aren't using it anymore whether they're not throwing fastballs up in the zone of whether they can't land to curb all that they were consistently landing all of those things are fairly evidence and the notion that we have put ourselves in a position to go into the most important part of any season postseason and not have equipment that the side stove. pitcher and hitter are comfortable with Is a is a black eye for baseball. That that doesn't make any sense would be like it would be like taking away. I'm watching the ryder cup to taking away drivers and say we can't figure out which driver to us..

"Reporter producer friend be dot com and sarah. We had the strangest bench-clearing incident that we've had in baseball this year because it felt like after kevin care. Meyer got hits that maybe not everybody on the side was fully invested in retaliation. Because wasn't like anybody came spreading out of their dugout looking for a brawl. Yeah it was. I mean i think the entire incident was just interesting and funny. I mean i guess this is twenty two thousand one baseball. We've heard about these cards. I i think some more traditional older baseball fans have opinions on them. I think they're fine. I think it's a cool thing that you know teams now do but i thought the entire thing was so funny. It's there he dropped it. And you know i mean. We knew that there was going to be some sort of retaliation like that. But i agree. It didn't seem like there was a whole lot of energy minus blue jays pitching coach. He was pretty incense but that was about that. Well he was the one who probably people augurs work was probably shaken up by it. But i also feel like that a lot of the scouting report stuff done by this time of the year. like everybody knows how they're getting pits especially in division games. You know look up on baseball savant. I mean we could do it. I could pull up how to pitch a guy right now. I mean it's not a it's not a secret and i totally agree especially in in division game. I i doubt they add something that was super unknown that nobody else had at this point in the season all right. Let's say the numbers game number. three number. Three is forty so last night in a loss. I know fernando tateishi. Junior hit his fortieth home. Run the season so we now have two guys who are twenty two or younger in fernando touchiest junior and vladimir guerrero junior who each have hit forty home runs this season so this is only the tenth individual forty homers and by a player at least that young twenty two or younger. This is the first season. Mlb history for two players at that age of both hit. Forty home runs and it seems like we're glad is obviously contending with salvador perez. But we could have two guys leaving their league in home runs at that young age ohling eight players under the age of twenty three have ever led their league in home runs. We've never had two of them in the same year so lot of history for those guys in potentially immortal come number. Two number two is ninety six. So we're talking about the great young crop of players in this game right now. I wanna talk about one soda too. I think he's going to get. mvp boats. I think he's probably gonna finish three. They're the top three finishers by the way could all be on teams. That missed the playoffs. So i know. His team is a little bit worse than bryce harper team or fernando tattoos junior team but worth noting there and of course team record shouldn't matter anyway. He hit his ninety six career home run last night. That's been the most by any player before turning twenty three behind. Only mel ought at matthews. Tony glare and bryce harper and harper is very much in reach for him to pass in these last few games of the season harper. Hit ninety seven so he's right there and remember. This includes the season where soto played in forty nine games last year. Magin where he would be on this list. If last year had been a full season and of course gladdened. T's have may be the most powerball these young guys but it's worth noting that is up there too the other thing he did last night. In addition to that home run is that he reached base safely four times so he is now done that space safely at least four times four nine times in his career forty nine games which is second most by anybody before turning twenty-three behind only ted williams with fifty four so is this incredible that pretty much every list you look with him. He's trailing inner circle hall of famer in mvp winners number one number one is ninety four point seven percent so those are the cardinals playoff odds right now again. They were at two point. Eight percent on september seven. They have not lost the game in really longtime they're up to in eleven game win streak which is their longest since two thousand one. They're going for twelve today with adam wainwright on the mound that would be their longest win streaks in april nineteen eighty two and of course in nineteen to. They went on to win the world series. Not sure if that will be in the cards this year but this has been insane. Ron and it's not even a question that they're going to make the playoffs at this point and imagine if i told you this about a month ago crazy we talked on the podcast yesterday about how it felt like i i mean i i know. I dismissed the cardinals and i didn't even really pay attention to him as they went along Before you go in a moment. We're going to hear from salvador perez in a conversation with johnny bench salvador perez now is four home runs away from fifty a season so charity think he'll get there and before you answer. I want to give you is scheduled coming up. Three games at detroit against the tigers the next week they afford games against the indians and they finish up with a three-game series with the minnesota twins when the bell rings when the seasons over salvador perez fifty homers. I think so i mean. He's shown no reason that he won it. You know Games against the tigers. If they're in america obviously america can be a litt a little bit Sm- a larger ballpark doesn't really There are some parts that park where it's very hard to hit home runs but generally facing those teams teams in its division that he's been beating up on all year. I i don't see why not. I mean i'm expecting both him and fled to end up in the fifty zeno. We only have a couple of games lot tear but just four home runs. I don't see why not. It's funny. Because i kind of look at it. I don't think glad is gonna do it. I think that salvi is gonna wind up getting it in part because of the meaning the meaning of the games like i think that vladimir guerrero juniors gonna situation reads not going to get pitched to and on the other hand having covered. Worst i ever covered is a beat writer via the padres nineteen ninety-three went sixty one in one. Oh one and there would be times in that game when the pitcher's like go get a challenge you with fastballs and i think that's going to be treated on the stretch. He's going to have opportunities. Yeah it's a really good point. I mean i was just thinking about the about the opponents. But that's very appoint that vlad is going to be in situations where he ever going to need to pitch around him..

"We've said that the vote is are in love with shohei ohtani unfor- good reason now run arenas. Starting all season is being great. I wonder frank was being absolutely red host but only since he got called up part season. I think this thing here for me. There's only two potential. I would probably i'm happy with so rainer in is polly which takes it plus two twenty and then you can just have a little save. Run wander franco. The only person who can beat them is franco. I eight. you might be able to find loved better as well So if you're taking your polly how they have a ten dollar saved from frank. Were eight to one. And i think that's the way it over those markets scott. Do you have any thoughts on any of those markets overall agree with your strategy. Now if you wanna talk about who. I think's going to win the mvp award. I think it's going to be a rose arena. Even though he played in about ninety playoff games last year and he's still technically a rookie which doesn't really make any sense for purposes. But still i gotta go with the rose arena because wonder franko as great as he's been you would be the favorite won the award if he played from day one. But he didn't. And i think that factors in now you can talk about guys who have had great Stretches and the rookie years when they get called up but to go through the actual numbers year arose arena has played insignificant more games obviously but actually go through the number of games. It's a bit jarring. Because he has played in one hundred twenty six games arose. Arenas at if you look at wander franco. He has played in sixty two. So i think the guy who's played half the game's gonna win the award over the guy. No i think rose is going to win the award so i agree with you now. Harper i think is a pure narrative award. I think that if tateishi ends up missing the playoffs or even the wildcard game and harper can will his team or quote unquote will his teams the phillies get into. He plays mediocre. I think he'll get the points for that anyway then. I think harper. When the award. So i agree. With your assessment i think arose arena minus one fifty in itself as a gift. I agree with you on them. They're gonna give it to a garcia either one. Nobody watches texas poi- fence but they're about what eighty games under five hundred but he's not winning the award and luis garcia's good but houston once again has struggled. Lately you still vow dez garcia's what the number three in that rotation the number four in that rotation so he's not really getting much publicity arose arenas the guy they know him from the plots last year than how good he is the media knows just how good he actually is. I didn't win the award. I think mine is one. Fifty is a gift moon off. Bryce harper is. He blew in your skirt over. You're going to like scott says if affiliate philly get over the line then than bryce apu's value as well. Yeah i mean. I think that a i agree with what you're saying that if that harper and the phillies get into the playoffs or win the division. I think that's going to be hard to con- overlook from the betters. He's having a pretty good season. Statistically and then you know. Tease has been really good to you got another homerun tonight. So he's i think he's getting closer to forty home runs on the season and you know early on in the season we talked about how to come to that. That player that that flashy player almost guy that turned out to be the face of mlb As one of the young and upcoming players in we've hiro tanya have been getting a lot of light in the media.

"Has. He's gotta have what like fourteen fifteen sixty. Bryce harper has fourteen home runs. And we'll see bryce harper when he hits home run. Yeah they're all solo all of them. Bryce harper hits a home run. He has fourteen. Rbi fourteen home runs. Fourteen that's crazy Also i mean. I saw i mean like cut. The guy some fucking slag. That's how people like coming at bryce harper for that. It'd be like oh dude. Yeah you fucking. You can't hit when there's runners on base price is responsible for the fox on bass get on base for the guy. He's not a leadoff hitter. No but i mean. I you have to look at how many. Abc's taken with guys on. Let's see what you don't have to do that right now. I'm just saying that's something to think about it. I'm going to look at what he's hitting with runners on base this year. What do you think. He has an opioid over nine hundred with runners on No bryce harper this year with runners on base. Okay men on base. He sitting to eighty two with a seven thirty nine. Opium runners in scoring position is not as good to twenty seven with a six. Oh two oh pius. Yeah so like on base your those numbers tell you right off the top that he's sacrificing power for bat to ball and he's not getting big with guys on and when he does especially in scoring position it goes way down when he is on he's okay like is on he's cutting the swing down with nobody on. Here's a nine forty nine oprah's getting real big jeered. Getting real big damage probably getting pitches to guys on not getting much to hit. And he's got to be a little more selective meaning and that's the thing being selective doesn't always necessarily mean eliminating balls it could very well mean expanding your strike zone to take advantage of a whole or to get a pitch. That's up it's up and out but you can handle it. You shoot at the other way instead of trying to snap this thing into the fucking second deck. Don't let him get a man on first though man i he's hitting three fifty three five hundred. Ob p. nine twelve opie s but still no.

"Everything that happens here. Go run put they go ask katie gala. Hey here higgin gallos. What do you think about that lineup. Over at the fan holy smokes. Okay well today. We'll see if he could gala is in the lineup or not jordan. Montgomery makes the start taking on four. Hey lopez will have the game on the fan coverage at twelve twenty five Later on today as for the mets they wound up losing to the red sox one nothing they had a grand total of count them one to two hits to lousy hits in nine innings of baseball and fifteen strikeouts James mccann was asked if the pause they had an. They're weird schedule with. The weather has had something to do with their atrocious offense. Really there's no excuse the layoff that we had after spring training is kind of just been a running thing of where we've gotten we've missed games. We've had rain outs Guys are trying to get a feel I mean you can name a bunch of things but the end of the day. There's no excuse. Well it's a good standup answer. And jacob degrom as you said he would both the guys when asked about no run support and not winning and only given up a few hits he says boy can give up that run there in the second to make Make pitches when. I needed to You know left of all over the middle bogart's hit the double in just wasn't able to execute on those next few batters to get us out of that has been forbidden. Gives one lousy running. Gets the loss and he did. He had nine strikeouts in six innings. And nothing we'd takes the l. mets philadelphia tomorrow night last night. The phillies beat the cardinals. Five to three. The sixth inning was definitely the story. Play this for you earlier. It's the sound off. Nbc sports phillies. Bryce harper the first batter in the six facing genesis. Cabrera i offering by cabrera renta face. It deflected into his face. Yeah and what was crazy was. After harper came out pinch runner he was actually okay. Believe it or not. The very next batter was one. Gis steve gregorious was up. Next is now didi. Goes down yeah. That's john crux. And all man. joe girardi came out. He got himself jackson and rightly so his reaction after the game right. If you're really protecting the players obviously he doesn't have he's got to go the third pitchy through and i'm not making this up so you got first and second nobody out. Andrew mccutchen is up. He throws the ball into the dirt like five feet before plate. The fourth page a ball in the dirt that mccutchen actually swung and missed on and then the fifth pitch was a rbi single the left. And at that point he was allowed because The rebound rule right mccarthy makes the point after he d doesn't he got to come get them and get them out of the game. Can't crux like no. He's got a face a third batter so as soon as the ball hit the bat he was out. So here you go. Here's a collateral of that new. You're absolutely nobody thought of this. Nobody nobody nobody their wildest dreams could have thought of this and this doesn't happen very often. Maybe once out of a thousand times this happens. I don't know of anything will if you think about it. What was was it stanton. Is the last player that got hit square in the face. By a fastball. So independent the next pitch would hit a guy. I don't think that's ever happened. Well uh teams thrown at each other and then is happening but it's different the case here. This kid was just wild yes he was all and you could tell by his reaction that he had no control right and maybe the empire has to step in and say okay. Come on get outta here. Let's go. it's let's joe geordies point. Yeah maybe joe made a very good point there. I if i if i were my guys be ticked off to no question especially that you know harper gets hit right in the face and it wasn't as tom mccarthy said it wasn't deflected his face he caught the ball face yes it basically smashed his nose into a skull and somehow he was already an instagram thing. If you were hockey player he would have come back in the game in baseball. Allow the guy out of the game on the doors hockey. You put right back in the game after he goes back and get the stitches. No shift change in regularly baseball first round of the nfl draft tonight as we mentioned also of note here the giants to exercise their fifth year option on saquon barkley. Teddy bridgewater is traded to the broncos. You mentioned the nhl. Your beloved rangers take on your second love and the islanders down. An comedown son-in-law plays and the devils we listen.
