"You gotta throw your curb all more, or you have to peach to the inside more, you got to pitch the outside more, whatever it is. You know that whatever team acquires him is going to have a plan. Two more quick ones for you, Bryce Harper yesterday. The Phillies are slumping Bryce Harper's been in a real struggle for for twenty four over the previous eight games. And after he was moved to the leadoff spot. If for yesterday's game gave Kappler insisted the move had nothing to do with his struggles. And he said, this was designed to spark the Philadelphia Phillies in when I saw. Aw, this one. I put that through the BS meter. I just don't think that the case obviously the trying to shake him free. What gave said. But the other thing, too is man book, we've seen this before, like put Bryce Harper in the leadoff spot to try to shake him up. That's what the nationals did last year. I gotta tell you, I've never. Bryce Harper confuses me in a way that I he, he is confounding to me, in terms of inconsistency in performance, like and when I mean, but look. You know, the one problem with the way, most people think baseball is that the guy has to eighty they think he's gonna hit two eighty every single month. And that's not the way it works. A guy who is two eighty more often than not is gonna hit two nine in April. He's going to ten in may. And then he's gonna hit three forty in June and on and on, and you end up getting sick to eight so there is some inconsistency for sure like guys are going to go up and down. It doesn't but Bryce Harper man, like I still think of him as the guy that could put up the best so PS in the game, and he has. But I just I don't understand who this guy is right now who slugging four fifty. I just don't. And he, and he, he's doing it and like you know in today's game you know normally four ninety six for slugging like the league average is like four twenty but a four ninety six slug is good. But we're ninety six slug when slugging is available like in today's game, the avail. Lable commodities power. Okay. We know that. And. So, so that level of like if he's going to slug six hundred then it's like, wow, let's get our hands on them. And yet, I still perceive him as a guy who's a Munster, and he goes through these stretches where he just gets lost. And I, I still don't you know, I said this before I mean like so BUSTER, like Mike trout next year. And that's not fair to compare these. But there's so many guys you could do this with if we sat down and did what would Bryce Harper slash line v necks year, and then we did it with Nolan Oren auto. And I mean, whatever level of player you wanted to, but I have no idea what rice Harper mean right now, I'm looking at it Bryce Harper slash to forty three three fifty seven four fifty two and he told me next year he was going to go to seventy four twenty five eighty I wouldn't even bat an eye. But that's worlds of difference from what he's doing. Doing this year. It's just I'm just, it's he's really interesting. It's very different replace of his caliber to be all over that the place and not find at least the consistent few years of these just doing this, this, this. I mean when you look at career Opie S's I mean here, moving by a hundred points if not more like every year, it goes from eleven hundred a ten to one thousand two eight ninety this year. It's eight I mean it's all over the place. Don't get the same player. It's weird man. A really is. And you, you and I being stats nerds. Love numbers like this. We don't necessarily love the results. But the, the, the shifts in this you mentioned about the change in him. He used to be like ten eleven percent. Swing and miss rate this year. It spike to fifteen and a half percent. Think about this book of all the hitters in major league baseball qualify for the batting title. This year. He has his seventh lowest rate of contact..

"My point is Bryce Harper outside of the weather and more of a salary Bryce opposite a better situation. Philadelphia's four no Philadelphia is expected to be a contender. They're expected anticipated to make the postseason ain't nobody accused Anaheim angels of doing that the Los Angeles angels of Anaheim, anybody accusing them of doing that. You got auspice. It ain't gonna correct. The problem you need more you need more than trout, Bryce Harper. By the way, I'd make the argument better fan base. Philadelphia that rabid fan base that let you off the hook. Let's go hold you accountable. They drove up from they drove Dan from Philly to DC just Abedian support Bryce Harper in his first game back. On home turf of the Washington nationals way played in start for the last few years. Let me tell you something right now. Those bulls they're misguided. Now. Somebody was steaming. I mean, hey, what's your problem them? I mean, they had the right to boo villa. Pig customer. Yeah. We know. That's not the point. Here is the point that the Washington nationals do everything they could to keep Bryce Harper. Your first offer was for three hundred million not three hundred and thirty million a hundred million of it was deferred over thirty three years. So essentially what you were doing was you came to Bryce Harper with the kind kinda low ball offer, you knew neither him nor Boris would accept and as Scott Boris that is as a result, you knew that he was leaving your practically push them out the damn dog. And by the way, if I remember correctly new, no the report stated that second offered a Bryce Harper was worse than the first offer. When you knew Manny Machado was going to get three hundred billion. When you could interpret their travels, go get over four hundred million. You come to Bryce Harper with one hundred million dollars deferred over thirty three years. You didn't wanna keep that? Boy. You want to keep that, man. You pushed about the door. Of your fans of the Washington nationals. How come you born in the organization? How come you? Now, bowling them. That's what I want to know. Because as far as that's exactly what the hell you should be doing. That is exactly what the hell. You should be doing. I mean, you absolutely, positively have got to be kidding me. Twenty six years old with his upside. And you're going to come to him. With an offer where a third of the money is deferred. And we aint talking about a deferment over a couple of years. We're talking about deferred over thirty three years. So in other words, his two hundred million instead of three hundred million and other one hundred million dollars. Ladies and gentlemen, we will defer. Up until Bryce Harper. It's fifty nine years old. Think about how much damn sense that makes that's what they did. And nobody's talking about that. But it needs to be talking about because I would say this. It was very disrespectful. It was very disrespectful to make a star of his caliber. Such an offer. It was insult. Think about that. What started the, you know would have accepted that Secondly, by the way, you gotta managing day Martinez, who I respect, but I got news for you know, here in better than dusty Baker so far not good. "Eight five five two one two four CBS. Bryce Harper signed a great money. If I'm major league baseball. I still expand the postseason make sure Manny Machado could get the postseason. Make sure Bryce Harper could get in the postseason it gives you a chance to not be forced to make moves because your team if they're a bubble team. It makes it harder for them to give up on the season. You're still in it. "Four two two seven Bryce Harper signed to a thirteen year three hundred and thirty million dollar deal. They've they've got it half. Right. Philadelphia's right. Philadelphia is going to have. No problem, the Phillies do pretty good job from all everything that I know from buddy Jo over there Gelb tells me a bunch of people tell me, they do it. Well, they get the pop the circumstance they get the Philly fanatic. Everybody gets excited. They try to get you excited about Philadelphia Phillies baseball, they the flyers the eagles. They do a pretty damn good job of it. The seventy Sixers held they got everybody still chanting trust the process. So obviously all four teams in Philadelphia. They do a pretty good job of getting everybody excited. What was the number that I heard what was sold Billy Jack one hundred thousand tickets after they did that. Yeah. We one hundred thousand one hundred thousand tickets they sold after right after they announced that Bryce Harper was going to be a Philadelphia Philly. That's a hell of a lot of tickets. So you don't have to worry in Philadelphia. They'll know who Bryce Harper is. I. Of Bryce Harper. And I don't like him because he's a good baseball player. I'm not a big Bryce Harper fan. Nets fan. Whatever the reason I love Bryce Harper is because there's people who hate Bryce Harper. And there will be people who love Bryce Harper in both of those sides can get together, and they can get a fight going. And we could talk about that type of guy. I love interesting characters Bryce, Harper's and interesting person. People think he could be cantankerous egotistical childish churlish doesn't matter. They don't like them. They love them. And we can have a conversation about them. I love players like that. Mike trout, I respect. But I love Bryce Harper might trust the greatest player in the game might trots historically great player. He's already a hall of Famer. But I love Bryce Harper. Baseball major league baseball needs to love Bryce Harper. Because every time we started talking about how baseball can get better. We talk about the wrong thing. Well, you got to slow down or you got to speed up the game. It's been getting too slow. Got to put a pitch clock on. It. Gotta keep guys in the box. You dance all natural stuff. Is there really something you want to promote? Is that really going to get people to go to the ballpark? I brought this up two weeks ago before the Bryce Harper signing. And I want to bring it up again because it is important to me. Telling people that they're gonna spend less time at the ballpark isn't a selling point. Stars get people to the ballpark, Bryce Harper. We'll get people to the ballpark. Mike trout. I wish got people to the ballpark. But he's boring. It's just the truth. Stars. Interesting people get fans to the ballpark hardcore baseball fan hates hearing hardcore baseball fan wants to treat baseball like a hobby. It's a big time professional money making entity. You gotta get regular folks there you have to get folks there who you don't respect their baseball accurate. They don't read fan graphs. They weren't excited about pagoda coming out. They don't read they are not baseball perspectives people. They don't really care you need those people. They have money in their all spends too and all route with you. And while you might not like them because they're not in your hobby there. They don't have that same obsession that you do their money still spends it. It makes your favorite baseball team. You able to spend more money and able to make your baseball team better in in a bunch of different places. Not just a bunch of Bryce Harper deals, but they disable to make your baseball team a lot better in different places. You need personality Bryce Harper has a personality. There are other players who have a personality baseball needs to bring it out. Stop telling me that you're going to put pictures on a pitch clock stopped telling me that you're gonna keep batteries in the in the in the box. I don't care. I don't care that the game is three hours and thirteen minutes long. And that it needs that you're doing your best to shorten it underneath three hours. I don't care. I should know the time. I should know football team football games. Take forever. NFL games take forever. And we talk about it every now, and then, but it's not the main thing baseball every single bleeping time. We talk baseball gets brought up. And it's because baseball pushes it. Well, now if we bring a pitcher out there he's gotta face three batters because we're a waste of your time. You know, who uses that as a promotion. When you're telling me that I'm going to spend less time at your event, and you use that as something to quote, unquote, promote your sport, you're doing it wrong. The other things that use that as a promotion that that it you're not gonna spend a lot of time there B M vs an emergency rooms, not professional sports. Not one of the big three big four, sorry hockey fans. Big four professional sports. Promote stars let us figure it out. I don't need Bryce Harper hidden from me we'll because Bryce Harper Bida. He might have picked out a home run here or there. We don't like that. No, no. We don't care. We don't care for those type of things he did a backflip. Oh my God. Who cares? Let us figure it out. Let us argue whether or not backflips are good or bad or whether or not Bryce Harper should shut up. If he's not having a great season. Let us bicker about that. And also stop living in the past. And I don't know how they do this. This is something that I wish I could give you an argument. Because part of my argument is that I got to be able to give you a solution. I'm not necessarily sure about the solution right off here. So I might end up spitballing it. But I look I look at the NFL. I'm in Cleveland. The Browns signed Kareem hunt two weeks ago cream hunt. There's a video of him committing assault on a woman in a hotel hallway. They signed him people were up in arms for like a day. Forty eight hours at most he'll be a story if he ends up in camp he'll be a story when he eventually plays. And then people will move on. Domestic violence as as and this isn't an excuse, obviously. And I'm not condoning, it always have to say that domestic violence is a real problem in America. And it should be people should go against domestic violence. We should be putting these people on blast for this. And I wish the NFL would make a stronger case for, but they're not gonna they haven't had to you. We don't make them if they did we'd support them. But they don't and we all move on. They have arrest problems in the NFL. There's guys who have drug problems in the NFL. We all move on concussions were a big deal ratings wick right back up to twenty percent to where they were the year before. We all moved on Colin Kaepernick was a big deal. We'll watch again coming up this year. Major league baseball every time. We talk about major league baseball idea unless you're in New York unless you're in Boston at certain times of the year. Saint Louis is a great baseball town. Try talking about baseball without getting steroids. Brought up it's impossible. We start we start talking about how do you promote baseball? The steroid age always gets brought up. Why why are we living in the past? I know we Roger Clemens isn't a lot of the hall of fame and Mark McGuire. And a lot of the hall of fame. Barry Bonds is along the hall of fame at all. Why God we who cares? Who who? Really cares. We are. We should be arguing about halls of fame. Once maybe twice a year. The rest should be about the sports, and what goes on on the sports. So what it's a bust. It's a plaque. It's a museum whereabout you dead. Guys are honored. That's what they are. Give me sanctimonious stuff. This garbage. To museum. And for us sports fans. Yeah. We can argue about whether or not a guy deserves to be in there. But now, we're taking it to a different level where guys who really have frankly, no business ever having a chance to be in the hall of fame in the terms of that museum and being honored is one of the greats in that again museum. But because we're so obsessed with guy sticking syringes in their ass that were so angry about it that we have to make it a big deal every single year in baseball pays the piper for Bryce Harper is how twenty six years old. It's twenty six right? So when was Bryce Harper born gimme a year, then about Billy gimme a year. What year was Bryce Harper. Born nineteen ninety to nineteen ninety two Bryce Harper was born in nineteen ninety two. So by the time Bryce Harper was playing baseball and cognizant of major stars in baseball. That would have probably been nine hundred ninety six thousand nine hundred ninety seven so he might have started to know about Mark Maguire, but why on earth is Bryce Harper or Mike trout or Francisco lend or Nolan era? Nado or Giancarlo Stanton. Aaron judge and some of the best hitters that we could possibly find why on earth are they still paying the fiddler for berry bonds and Mark McGuire? And even Alex Rodriguez. We're trying to move on. And even myself. I understand the hypocrisy that I'm shouting from the rooftop, Danny buddy. Who'll listen right now in America on a Saturday midday about steroids. Guys on tape hitting women in the NFL. And we'll find ways to move on. Some guys will try to find ways to condone it. It's sick. But I've taken those calls. NBA they've had drug problems in the past. You you honestly, have a classism going on in the NBA where players do not want to be in fly over states. Where no matter what you do to the contracts. No matter what you do to the CBA. If that player does not want to play in that city. If he doesn't want to live in that area. He's going to leave. Mea still able to market their stars. We made movies about concussions Will Smith was in it for crying out loud. NFL moves on. Major league baseball. Will you see Barry Bonds? He went to Balch. Oh, and he might have had cream or clear something like that. And I gave himself a rub down with some sort of flubber one time back in the nineties. And boy, we still just let you hear about it. Good. God. Have you ever seen anything like that? Where you drag around the corpse of a dead subject for twenty years. Eight five.

"If you want to vote on the polls, we will get to stand van Gundy's seemed nuggets here in about one minute. But I am reading STAN because we were talking about how much Scott Boris makes off of that three hundred and thirty million dollar contract that he just got for Bryce Harper. And STAN Van Gundy pointed out that unlike in the media where it's ten percent agent fee that in the NBA, and and the NFL it is a three percent feet. But evidently what where you don't have a limit STAN is baseball and the National Hockey League. And so I'm reading here in agents commission, varies based on the sport. He represents generally sports agent earns between four and ten percent of an athlete playing contract though, some leagues place limits on what percentage an agent can charge commission. Baseball is not one of those leagues though. So I I really don't know how much of that Boris is getting maybe we should ask Kirk shin. Maybe we should ask somebody who knows more than we do about whether or not Scott bores because that becomes a tricky thing. Stan when an agent is negotiating for himself as much as he's negotiating for a client because everything that happened here feels really ego. So than really look at me, Scott Boris type stuff. Yeah. Which is not too surprising. We've seen that before. But but look the more he gets for himself. Obviously the more he ends up getting for Bryce Harper. So at the end of the day at least as far as the dollars go there one in the same. I'm not sure though that if he had signed a short term deal betting on himself that he couldn't because he's coming off of an off year. This is not the prime time to buy on Bryce Harper. The last couple of years there have been better times to buy on Bryce Harper. I I what I just saw was an agent hell bent on getting a contract bigger than Giancarlo Giancarlo Stanton's. And to me, that's not actually representing your client best. That's just getting the most money. Those two things aren't always sending him the thing with that though, Dan is that if he takes a one year bet on himself, it's not even totally in his control because then you need Stanton davits and union Machado have a good year. Aaron NADA to have a good year to prove that these long-term deals are worth signing because of the three of them bust for. A couple of years, then it's like, well, why should we sign anyone for ten years? So it's kind of out of his control at that point. What do you know? What do we know about exactly what the short term offers were? We know nothing right there. Just these allegations of forty five million dollars a year from the dodgers. But nobody was ever. Nobody was able to verify that those numbers were real, right? No. And these kind of claims come up all the time. Like, if you listen to these guys, it's like, no one ever signed for the most money, they all took less because they wanted to be here. And even if they don't say, they took less, I love all these comments of you know, Manny Machado was just drawn to the Padres vision. No. He was drawn to three hundred million. I mean, can we just stop with all that, you know? Nobody's buying it. Anyway, Bryce Harper didn't give a damn about. What the Phillies vision is or what their plan is or anything else. He was drawn to thirteen million thirteen years three hundred thirty million period. And there's nothing wrong with that. That's why you work is to make money. So I've got no. Problem with it. I just wish we'd drop. All this dishonest crap last night a Bob Nightingale reported of the dodgers find offers for three years one thirty five four years one sixty eight the giants offer twelve years three ten and the Phillies offer thirteen years three thirty with no opt-out full no-trade clause, and no deferred money. I'm not sure I believe any of that stuff has to come from agents like that. That's right. That's not the teams are not giving out that information. Bob's lie. Tanner your question on on the commission. I reached out to our friend. Jeff passan text me back that the standard in baseball is five percent. And that's what Scott Boris charges.

"Okay. So fact checked this whole when you count firm flation, it's not the the best contract ever. And there's something to it. Because Giancarlo Stanton sign that contract in two thousand fourteen cents then on average, the US dollar has seen inflation rate rise of about one point two three percent per year. So prices in this country or about six point three percent higher than they were back in two thousand and fourteen and he only made five million extra dollars on a contract that surpass three hundred million dollars. So Dan, you are correct with your take does anyone care about that though? I don't think that I think people here the three hundred thirty million and Scott Boras is egos soaked and savvy enough to know that you throw that number out there people don't care much of the about the math after that. We just thinking of Boers reputation. Do we know that Harper wasn't like? His ear saying I just want the biggest baseball contract ever know what a great point. But STAN was saying he wanted the longest contract he could possibly get the rare. Great point by Chris, Cody, even he seems surprised by it. Yeah. But about Scott Boras. Okay. Bryce Harper was in his ear. He really had to fight. Scott Scott Boris on that I want the biggest contract ever. But if it's report he said is saying that he was offered four years one hundred and sixty five million. So that he would have got his one percent of that. And then in four years been able to negotiate a new contract stay, why do we care so much about this rebel create an entire cottage industry around the idea of sports business and explaining sports business to people who clearly care about these numbers. Why do we care this way? We are talking more baseball because of these damn contracts than we ever talk when they're playing game. We haven't even got into signing. Bonuses, dan. Did you see Bryce he's only making ten million this year because of that twenty million dollar signing bonus. He's getting that's awesome. Oh my God. I would signed a one million dollar contract year thirteen years one million dollars, and then got an a three hundred and seventeen million dollar signing bonus. I love that ESPN tweeted out that Bobby Baena is gonna be paid by the Mets for three years after the Phillies. Stop. Paying Bryce Harper that Bobby in the nineties signed that contract that paid him a million dollars a year every year, and I've seen business people break down and say that's not the way to do it. You shouldn't do it that way. But Baena was like, look, I'm not blowing my money. I'm going to make a million dollars a year for three or four years after Bryce Harper makes basically winning the lottery every year every year. How would you do if you win the lottery, would you take the lump sum or would you do the yearly payouts 'cause if you do the lump sum, they cut it in half, basically? And then you gotta pay taxes like another house. You're basically getting a quarter of whatever the winnings are. But if you take it all over like thirty year pay you get all of it. And then you lose half of it in taxes or whatever. But you know, you look I'm gonna get like thirty million dollars this year, and I'll never blow look I can probably blow four hundred million dollars. I mean, I don't think I actually could. But everybody does it. So I guess I could to everybody does a lot. Yeah. Dan winters. Not very many people do not. No, wait a minute. Do the testing. Yes. Lottery winners. Go broke it like an eighty percent rate. Yes. They're not the ones that are winning field million..

"Put Reese Hoskins right behind Bryce Harper. I liked that a little bit more than the projected lineup right there. Then you have RBI potential. You have very good top five in that lineup. And yesterday, I spoke to j t Rahmutallah, and they told them you might. And sixth in the lineup. That's how deep the slide appears balanced audible, also, and you also have these. From the left side is a switch. Now, you have dollars, right? A couple right handed hitters left handed header this is just a perfect balance right here for the Philadelphia Phillies a team the all they need right now is pitching and bullpen. Because there's a lot of rough about reaction new clubhouse. Philadelphia's skipper gave Kappler said fans seated behind him in the dugout during the team's spring game. In Clearwater were waving their phones in reading their Twitter. Feeds informing him for the first time of the reported agreement. This was his immediate reaction. Obviously. If the reports are true there, we acquired Bryce Harper certainly franchise altering certainly season altering for the Philadelphia Phillies. We were we were a great ball club coming into spring training without Bryce Harper. If the reports are true, we're going to be we're going to be an even better ball club. "Know, what this is the biggest name out there, and we're going to go get him. We're going to get him right now. Sure, we can talk about contract lake doll day thirteen years. That's a long time too. Big commitment. And sure we can also look at some of the stats Phillies weren't particularly good defensively last year. Bryce harper. Not particularly good. We can look at the east in general and say, suddenly this this make them the main ship in the east are they the team to beat. I don't know. At this point. None of us know. But what we know without hesitation is. That the Phillies have been aggressive. The Phillies have been aggressive to a point that we've never seen before. The Phillies have gone out. And this is going to the Elias sports bureau, the Phillies are the first team in major league baseball history to add three position players in an off season. All of whom were all stars in the previous season serum real Muto. And now Bryce Harper. What does that tell you? You can sit there all day long, and you can hate on thirteen years three hundred and thirty million dollars. But let's remember baseball teams print money. Like, it's nothing. Baseball teams are like your buddy that can eat whatever candy they want and they stay skinny. Is there? We're going to spend three hundred and three thirty million dollars. We were talking about it as we were prepping the show tonight saying does it make them bonafide World Series contenders? Maybe but they might have to add my Trump. No problem. No problem. You're like, you know, what? Yes, I'm at the movie theater. I would like to butter popcorn. And I would like the sour patch kids. I'm going to combine them. I don't care about calories. That's how major league baseball teams are with money. They don't care they'll make more you. Suddenly think the Phillies aren't going to be active if they need to make change if they need to sign more players. This is the Phillies team as I just told you active at a level. We've never seen before. Thirteen years three hundred and thirty million dollars for Bryce Harper. It's alarming. It's alarming because we conditioned ourselves to the logic. The bright Bryce Harper wasn't going to get it. We he conditioned ourselves because of the length of this whole process to the logic that you know, what prices going to regret turn down that three hundred million dollars from the nets. "Talking about Bryce Harper. Right. No. So why don't they do that with Bryce Harper? Accorded yesterday, the two teams he wants to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Chicago Cubs the way, you just map that out. If all this money's coming off the books that you don't have right now. But we will have why don't you backload something and get the Bryce Harper deal done. Look, that's another whole topic. We can unpack. You don't know what to believe when the Machado? Sweepstakes was going on every day. There was a different tweet about this that and none of it was actually accurate. None of it. It's a great article in Sports Illustrated this morning, and I re tweeted you gotta read it how the Padres beat out the White Sox to get the deal done. So which part is not correct. The fact that Bryce Harper doesn't want to be here. No, I'm saying if you listen to you, go on social media John Hayman says he's getting a ten year deal. Don't believe he's going to do a short term deal. And then others say not so fast sparky, he might be willing for the right team to do a shorter term high ever Daniel value deal. So if indeed he would consider it from one of two teams cubs. Your dodgers. Could Tom Ricketts ride into and say, hey, look, I told you guys were out of money. I'm going to personally fund this deal. "We'll get you up to six eastern time one hour from now you get Golic and wingo, of course, taking you for a few hours. We're going to get into the streak stopping. Game for James harden last night, thirty two straight thirty point games. We'll stay at thirty two. And it does not see number thirty three. He'll have to start a new Karl Anthony towns. Incredible rebound to bigger than any of the twenty one. He gathered last night for the wolves. And also the latest drama surrounding the Lakers abroad James because what happened last night. Causes more concern consternation negativity around that. Once proud franchise, we'll get all those spots for you. Coming up in a matter of minutes. Meanwhile, Manny Machado was the first shoe to drop ten years three hundred million dollars San Diego Padres. Right. Why he went there? How he went there? We debated we discussed many have. But it's in the books. It's done. It's in the past. He's a Padre we thought and have for a long time that whenever one shoe drop the other one would will one did Machado. We thought Harper Bryce Harper would be. Next logical signing somewhere shortly after Machado why because Machado set the market so Harper says more than ten to three hundred dollar deal. We think the Phillies are close we've heard that for a week or so we've heard it from other outlets. We've heard it from Rhode Island. Still not done. And then the news comes that. Wait a minute. Now the dodgers out of this thing yet. Right. We already know the giants met with him in Vegas has people. They've been a franchise that he apparently has been somewhat intrigued by the White Sox are still hopeful. Although it's probably hope against hope here. The nationals are still hopeful, but they're probably in the same boat as the White Sox, the Phillies seemed to be the most legit possibility because they appear to be willing to go for the long term tenure deal that he's looking for in excess of the three hundred million dollars that Machado is getting from San Diego. But then the dodgers are the mix and ten years for the dodgers does not sound like that is going to happen. So why did the dodger brass meet with Harper and his people in Vegas as the story goes, here's ESPN major league baseball insider Jeff passer, it was just a stop in check. That's all you know, they stopped over in Las Vegas. They thought hey, let's discuss a five six year deal somewhere in that vicinity. And that's what the dodgers want. They're looking at a short term deal. They don't wanna. Commit to the decade, plus long deal that Bryce Harper wants. And that's why at this point even though they have as much money as they do even though they have the incentive to get Bryce Harper. This doesn't seem like a match that's going to happen in less the dodgers stretch beyond that short-term deal that they'd like yet. Remember, there's room here with the dodgers. Because they made the deal with the Cincinnati Reds a couple of months back. Yes. Matt camp. Alex would all go to Cincinnati. They clear some cap space for what everybody presumed. We would be the signing of Bryce Harper. ESPN radio is presented by progressive insurance. Drivers switched to progressive could save an average of six hundred sixty eight dollars. But the dodgers really haven't done anything. Yes. They went out. They got from Arizona center fielder. AJ pollock. So they've spent a little bit of that money. But it's nothing like what people assumed would happen as soon as the dodgers made the move of sending camp, we can do Cincinnati. So now, they want a short term deal. Nobody is really throwing out ideas from any reliable sources on what kind of money we're talking about. I assume for a short term deal you'd go more than the thirty to thirty two million dollar per year, guaranteed that the Phillies apparently are going, wouldn't you? I mean, if you don't you sell it. We'll go short term bet on yourself a little bit Bryce, but we're gonna pay you more annually than Philly over ten years. I don't understand why anybody. I do. Here's a problem. There's a lot of people that assume the only thing that matters to Bryce Harper's money. Right. And he's going to take whoever offers more. Why do we think that because we see that almost on a daily basis for professional athletes, and it's hard to blame? Right. Because there's a sense of pride in this to wait a minute. Now, you might think to yourself if you're Bryce Harper. I'm better than Manny Machado numbers would say you're about to save as many Machado, but I play harder Manny Machado. But I don't have any baggage like Manny Machado. So I'm going to make more than thirty million dollars a year. Then Manny Machado. It's a pride thing. I mean, as we sit here, sir. What's the difference? If you're making thirty two million a year or thirty million a year is that life changing that two million dollars. No. I get that. I understand that more than him more valuable to a team that him. So why would he go to the dodgers? Why would he go? Then that's a valid question. Like, if you can get what you want a long term ten year deal somewhere else make more than Manny Machado and the law. You know, the the highest money long-term deal in the history of the game. Why would you go to LA in the short term and that is a concern in Los Angeles. According to ABC seven curt Sandoval everybody here is wondering you Scott Boras playing the dodgers. Why would Bryce Harper do a five year deal with the dodgers? I could see him doing maybe a two year deal baby. But if the Phillies are already offering him over three hundred million for ten years the dodgers aren't gonna play that game. There's no way. And they've made that clear that was up and Fitz. Infants last night. Because if he does turn that down. I'm not a math major. But as BUSTER only explains ESPN insider, he would be turning down eight ton of cash. So you're Bryce Harper. And you decide you know, what I'd rather play for the dodgers. I'd rather play for the giant. It would be basically be like one hundred and seventy five to two hundred million dollar gamble. You would say, you know, what I'd rather shorter term deal. I'd rather not playing Philadelphia whatever his reasons are, but Manny be walking away from a lot of money. This is my favorite thing. I heard yesterday BUSTER again now. Think about how long this has dragged on since the Machado signing K one shoe dropped the other one has not yet. Now, we're into spring training. Okay. Now, we're into valuable time. We know Bryce can hit. We know Bryce has been out hitting. We'd OBE Bryce probably taken plenty of fly balls. We know prices shape. We don't have to worry about that. But when you join a new team, there's a chemistry aspect of this that has to take hold now, you've got one hundred sixty two games. Look if there's a ten game judgment here in the regular season. It's probably the biggest thing in the world. But at some point Philadelphia has got to begin to assemble Elida, right? Put pen to paper. What can we look at? Let's start employing this particular lineup which we think will be are likely go to everyday lineup. We could slot Bryce into right field. We'll have him hit ahead of him have him hit behind him. Let's see how this works out there. Not having the benefit of they don't even know if one of the best players in the entire game of baseball will be on their team or not and BUSTER only saying. And look here's what I would do Phillies. I was told over the weekend. They're competent. They're gonna sign Harper. They feel like they have the biggest offer on the table. And the dodgers have jumped there had been conversations with the giants and other teams at some point if I'm John nettleton. I'm calling Scott Boris as I said to Bob, and I'm saying you got twenty four hours if you don't want to take her offer, that's fine. But we're not gonna have this thing drag out we're going to pivot and perhaps focus on other players. Because at some point I feel like you gotta push Bryce Harper to make a decision the longer. This goes on the later he gets into camp the less chance that he's accessible be at the outset of his deal. Could you imagine? After all of this the Phillies pulling their offer to Bryce Harper. You know yesterday on this show alley a producer jumped in and asked. You know, essentially like would Philly fans boo Bryce Harper. And I said the way he plays the game. I don't necessarily think. So unless he changes the way he plays the game. Now if he goes in an over forty eight slump right or he boots three balls in a ball game. And right, I guess things change, but they would appreciate a player like him. But here's the problem now. Now, there's a feeling. That Bryce Harper Scott Boris. We're kind of holding this team. They're backed into a corner, right? I don't wanna use the word hostage. It's a bad word years. But they're certainly hamstringing the Phillies. The Phillies are clearly willing to spend money. They're holding money for harp. Could they go out help solidify the rotation or the bullpen with some of the names that are still out there? I don't know. Maybe they would maybe they would. They need an answer. They didn't know if they've got him or not. But do you throw in all tomato Bryce Harper. This you're willing to spend upwards of thirty two thirty three million dollars a year. Potentially for ten years. Do you endanger that by throwing out the offer? I liked the idea. But at some point. He's gotta make a decision because you as a franchise need to know who you're right fielder is who your cleanup hitter is were you slide them into the lineup. How guys will respond to happen Bryce Harper around? I don't mind this idea. But it doesn't come without risk saying you've got twenty four hours. And the longer this goes that fan base in Philly might start to look at Bryce Harper a little differently because they love their teams as much as any fan base in any city. They love their teams. And if he turns it into Bryce Harper against the Phillies, even if it becomes Bryce Harper. As part of the Phillies might be a little bit of an adjustment period or cooling off period that needs to happen before that fan base. Fully embraces him. Make a decision rice, please make a decision Doreen noca- with you coming up the streak ended said it could take for the rockets James harden will tell us CSPAN radio the ESPN app. Hardheaded.

"I mean, this is like like what you've been dating somebody really longtime and everybody just gives up the ever going to get married. That's where we we're like eight years into this story of Bryce Harper the free agent. He almost married or too soon. He almost signed the deal right away. And now all of a sudden, we don't know what's going to happen. And this is unfortunate. I can't stress this enough for baseball fans. Right. That want to be able to talk about the season. And what's coming up? We can't. Because this Bryce Harper thing is still. Not just Bryce Harper. Don't forget Dallas. Kyko was still sitting out. There GIO Gonzalez was still sitting out there. And they realize last year, you know, the big free agent pitcher was Jake Arrieta. And he didn't sign until March the eleventh so and it was one year ago tomorrow that JD Martinez signed his deal with the Boston Red Sox. So we're sort of in that same zone with what's happening this year. I just find it so irritating. I think there was a presumption to the once one of the two megastars Machado and Harper web. We would see the other one immediately. And we saw Machado go to the Padres last week. And I think we all felt like okay now, we know sort of market values been set we understand where these things are gonna lie and it's quickly going to turn into a situation where Bryce gets its own megadeal. It hasn't been that simple though. And now we're down to two suitors, it appears would two very different strategies. I feel like I'm learning a little bit about Bryce Harper, and what he wants from the decision making here like with no. With no disrespect but utter disrespect to the Padres. Many Machado recap. No, no, disrespect just the other. What am I who? Am I kidding? I feel like Manny Machado took the money grab. Right. I in the news out of the last couple of days is that we know that the Phillies there confident they want to have Bryce Harper. But now the dodgers have gotten back into the conversation and ask Jeff passan this morning on sportscenter. Like, why are they getting back into this conversation now like so late in the game? And he's like well because Bryce Harper still isn't signed. It's really a simple as that. So you've got we don't know the exact details of the contract offers. But you've got in theory the dodgers offering a significant amount of money, but a shorter term deal or you've got the deal that the ten years three hundred plus million dollars from the Phillies. And I think I love the fact that Bryce Harper is considering the shorter deal. I do. Okay. Because I think one it's it's the ultimate bet on yourself. It's also the legacy play. You can go to the Phillies, you can take the money grab, and you can get your guaranteed money or you go to the dodgers where you.

"However, Kawhi Leonard will not depart this game. He's got to sit out due to some rest. Cherney till the Turney canteens Virginia Tech Duke Tuesday at six thirty eastern on ESPN radio and on ESPN. ESPN radio and the ESPN app filling in today, ROY Cheung, Tim Montemayor with you and a pleasure to be with you. The biggest story in sports today. I think Royce continues to be the pursuits of Bryce Harper, by the way, by the way. Please tell me that you're excited that spring training. Baseball is underway. I'm very excited because that means that summertime is almost here. Big fan of summer. No, I'm excited. You don't know what that means? You live in Arizona. You don't understand it? We have summer twelve months a year. What are you talk? Is. There are there places where it's not summer getting hey, we had we had snow in Scottsdale this week. So people forgot how to drive let's settle down. But the point is I'm Ashley I'm passionate baseball fan. I do I do love spring training. But this Bryce Harper thing is mind scratching just numbing to me because I think price Harper who by the way, if the latest on Bryce Harper is is that he is met in person again with the owner of the Philadelphia Phillies in Las Vegas and one hour from now BUSTER only is going to join us to give us the very latest on it. But what we know is that there is some belief that there could be offer. There could be a deal done by Tuesday. I'd be really surprised if Bryce Harper science with Philly because it just doesn't feel like he wanted to go there. He coulda had this deal done a long time ago. They've been chasing him hard. Would you be surprised if it ends up price? Harper goes to Philly mean all signs point to there. So I guess at this point. No. But if you would've told me, Tim before this whole process started, I would said, yes. They didn't seem to check the boxes outside of having the money to spend on them. And look when players making these types of decisions that they way they have their own personal checklists in what they want to get. And the expectation is is that Harper will probably get a similar deal. What Manny Machado got the bar has been set. But didn't it feel like there were better options out there for him? It did it did. But it apparently all those offers dried up for Bryce Harper because the other thing that is a painfully obvious to me as we saw the, you know, the Manny Machado to San Diego, and how exciting that was. And how energized the San Diego Padre fan base became? He got three hundred billion over ten years. Are you telling me that Bryce Harper doesn't have a better offer than three hundred million? It would surprise me if he did. Because if he did I why would he not sign that deal? It would be it would be surprised if he had a three if Bryce Harper had multiple three hundred and twenty million dollar offers. Are you telling me he's not under contract already, right? That's right. Yeah. It'd be surprising because Bryce Harper from the word go the minute the World Series ended and free agency began in the hot stove turned on Bryce Harper was the commodity. So we know this that the Padres have had interest even though now they say they're out. We know the dodgers showed lukewarm interest. We know the San Francisco Giants would love to add Bryce Harper White Sox were in there. The White Sox for sure. So I'm just curious why why are teams not making him a three hundred and twenty five million dollar offer. Are you are you a guy rice young who believes that Bryce Harper makes teams better? See that's he had a down year last year right here. What to forty nine down here? That was still a spectacular your hundred RBI is in. I mean, he he did have there's no question Bryce Harper had a down year. Yes. Yes. But he also, you know, when you talk about like is he a winner can he can change your your franchise. He was part of a pretty significant turnaround with Washington nationals like Bryce Harper injected a new life into that organization, and look they surrounded him. And there's a lot of good players on the team. That lineup was great pitching. Unbelievable. Yeah. Sure. Zor and Rondonia they protected Bryce Harper. But he's an exciting player that you pay money to see. So yeah, there has to be some kind of level of. I don't know worry of buyer's remorse. Anytime you thrown around a ten year contract. I feel like that to me again. I don't know the inner workings of baseball front office, but tenure contracts I know that there's somewhat common with with these superstar level players. But. You. Thirty six, but you gave ten years in three hundred million dollars to a guy who admitted he doesn't like to hustle. Manny Machado said yeah, hustling, that's just not my thing. Less room for injury. You paid them three hundred million dollars. And I understand that. That's what you have to do. And we're talking about Bryce Harper. And where he may end up in the latest rumors about that here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app, and I just have a problem if you're going to pay Manny Machado, three hundred million dollars, and you're only worth what somebody's willing to pay you. You're not worth what you think you're worth Manny Machado, set the bar three hundred million dollars. I would pay Bryce Harper. I if we're paying three hundred million for Manny, I'm paying Bryce three twenty five and I don't have to think twice about it. I am. Because if it's not about the fit right in. It's just about the money. Then that's what it would take. Right. That's exactly what it would take in as a die hard. I m e passionate diehard Chicago Cubs fan. I would be happy to pay him thirty five million dollars a year and put him in right field. And I know that defensively his numbers are not stellar Bryce Harper can play the outfield on any major league team with any major league outfielder because he's gonna hit he's going to run hard. He plays hard. And if he's on the Chicago Cubs. Let's say if he's on if he's on the LA dodgers, if he's on the San Francisco Giants, I know that those three teams are better if he's on the Philadelphia Phillies. It'll be interesting to see what happens to that team. Because they've had Dave Robertson was a really nice pick up for the Phillies. So I think the Phillies will be a better team for him. I just I'm not convinced that Bryce Harper wants to spend the next decade in Philadelphia. Because if he if he had I think he would have done it. You know, I think he would've signed that deal already. But hey here nor there. I look at the the money thing, and this collusion argument, by the way that everybody talks about and rice, you may know, what I'm talking about the people feel like the owners of major league baseball are trying to keep free agents down and whatnot. I don't think that's the case with Bryce Harper. I think what's really happening agree or disagree. I think what's happening is he he believes he's worth three twenty five or three fifty and he's not getting those off. Yeah. I think that I think the players like him, they they they survey the marketplace, and they look at it and say there should be like a a level of inflation here. And that you know, I want to be the highest paid player in baseball history. And you know, I think the executives and owners are probably trying to show a different level of discipline these days, but to me, and and maybe the reason that you mentioned it earlier Tim that does Bryce Harper. Make you a title contender. Obviously in baseball. It's not like basketball. It's not like signing a quarterback where it's like the world can revolve around one player one player in the middle. Your lineup doesn't necessarily elevating the level. There's a lot of other factors a lot of other roles that have to be filled. But if let's say a good team signs, Bryce Harper. Can they do they become a great team from that point on? And I think that's what teams are asking themselves. I can only tell you that. I think the San Diego Padres are now in a much better place to contend for the NFL west. And really, it's not. Not only because of Manny Machado, certainly he helps and he fills in nicely on an infield with Kinzler he fills in nicely with with, you know. The things that they are trying to do the Cosmas, but they also have this unbelievable farm system with guys like Joey Lucchessi a guy like an Eric lower Luis Perdomo who's coming back or you know, what Denilson lament the head. Tommy John surgery for the Padres who's on his way back. Oh, by the way, they've got you realize twenty great prospects in AA and AAA for the Padres right now. So it made sense for the Padres to go spend three hundred million dollars. I'm Manny Machado my opinion. Is it doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense for them to go and spend that kind of money on Bryce Harper because they've already got Franci Cordeiro whose name nobody knows. But that guy is a legit power guy. They've got guys to hit balls out of the ballpark. They don't need that. I'm telling you, the San Francisco Giants need that. I'm not convinced the Philadelphia Phillies. Do don't go anywhere BUSTER only in about forty minutes. I'll ask him straight up about is this an issue where Bryce Harper feels. He's worth more than the. Offers. He's getting because frankly, folks, I can't find another reason why he wouldn't be under contract. Speaking of worth the money. He's getting LeBron and the Lakers lost again last night. Lebron had some very curious comments after the game. So we'll talk about it next will the Lakers make the playoffs on the Mike ESPN radio and the ESPN app..

"Teams fans will pay to see winners and stuff like that. But that's another thing. That's sort of gets weird like presentation is that fans sort of assume a lot of fans do not everything, but you know, ticket prices went up because we're paying the price Harper thirty million a year or something. But in reality, those tickets are there because of supply and demand, and that's what fuels the salaries ten billion dollar industry last year. So. What three billion a decade ago? So the money's there. It's not that the tickets are being raised because of the players more the money's already there. So they need to figure out a way to sort of split it up. Now, Eric you mentioned Bryce Harper Bryce Harper. Of course, still doesn't have a deal. We're getting close to February. You know, it's it's it's unbelievable. Yeah. I could see if Bryce Harper was thirty four. And they wanted a mega contract, and you know, he'd shown some signs of injury or slowing down or whatnot teams. Of course, remember the contracts giving the Iran pool halls. Well, you know, I don't know if I want to sign that kind of deal Bryce, Harper's twenty six. Bryce Harper puts fannies in seats Bryce Harper moves merchandise. Why is it so hard for Bryce Harper to get a deal? That that's one of the main sort of sticking points is Mike. You're right. Twenty six Machado's twenty six or two of the best free agents of the last decade in terms of production. Their actual age like we talked about free agency. You're you're overpaying for older years. But you're you're you're getting like no matter the length the contract the first five years of that contract is basically like prime season guys. And that's rare in free agency that to get that. So that they're not getting the I mean, the fact, you know, there's really only three or four teams that are seem to be legitimately interested in either of these guys, and that's weird. That's where players red flag. Probably go up as a whole like what's going on here? Like, you know, we saw this lady's with collusion. Maybe the teams are smarter about it this time. I don't know if it will come to that. But I think that's where the sort of worry something, you're right. Their impact players. I know you know, you.
