"Has been such a crazy year. There's going to be lots of conversations around what it means to be coaching in this new world what it meant for some coaches to kind of get through covid-19 away from their teams for a long time off and and kind of innovative in their coaching Styles and techniques during that time and that's kind of a whole theme about this season. I want to go down is is really talking about Innovation and like foul like where the new rules that you basically set up for your for your coaching world and how has that impacted everything that's gone on in the past few months, but hopefully how do we move move forward through it dead? And along that lines were going to be all over the map. We're going to be talking inclusion and diversity. We're going to be talking Innovative program design. We're going to be talking with some program leaders and some really for thinkers and Pioneers and their programs. So I'm very excited to use that segue to introduce Simon. Who's our guest today Simon works with parasport New Brunswick and wage has a long resume in the Paris world's. I'm going to let you introduce yourself. Maybe if you just want to kind of take us down a little bit on your on your sports journey, and then I'll start firing off my questions. Okay? Well, thank you very much Ashley. It's an honor to be on your podcast and it's going to be a great one to you know, like you said just sucks, especially making a transition from the noon the old normal to The New Normal if you would I guess it's going to be a very interesting time and yeah for me. Um, you know, I started being really involved in Paris for New Brunswick it since last year, you know, I've been employed since last year with them as a program coordinator long before that. I I really been an athlete all around started started playing Global at the age of nine. And from there. I you know kannada language the ranks a little bit went on a junior national team for global international team. I made it all the way to the paralympic games in 2016 and along the way started coaching and I really wanted to be involved in Govalle to a new Province. And since I've been employed with Paris for a New Brunswick, we restarted their Global program that involved with the wheelchair basketball program too. And you know, it's a really fun road so far and hopefully we'll keep it going. That's great. So how did you first get involved with gold ball when you're a kid, so when I was a kid It was really involved with a whole lot of sports are playing hockey. I was playing soccer AAA soccer. Even if I was visually impaired since birth and you know, I I had a assistant teacher at school and you know, she really knew me and knew that it was super into sports and you know, she just mentioned over and we're thinking of starting a global program here in the fall coming in the coming year. So you want to try it out, you know, it says it is for that you'd be interested in and never heard of a sport before at that point. I was only nine years old and never really been into tears formed. It's up until then. So I never really knew anything about it decided to go to one practice and I was hope to right away and I just loved it. I just loved you know off the ball rolling black try to store goals and it was really an inclusive environment too. That's what's kind of need about the sport. It's a it's a sword that even if you're fully sighted dead. You can still play so, you know, I had a couple of friends that came out with me and we played together and that was it. Basically it was just a good start and I was hooked to Thursday and just kept playing and went all the way basically. That's incredible. And so when Goebbels first introduced at your school, was it a relatively new sport or how long had been around for cuz honestly it and I've only heard of the sport in the last few years or so. So I I imagine it has been 4 to do long. Yeah, so it's it's really interesting. It's a sport but it's actually been around since right after a second world war. Oh, it's yeah, it was it was a rehab sport for all the Second World War veterans all the soldiers that either lost or site or whatnot during the war. So it really started way back in the in the 50s or even forty forty-five or forty six years. I think they they started and it was starting in in Austria and in Germany and from there it got into the paralympic games and 1960 and the prologue. Get started at that point and the global was really introduced into the Paralympics into the paralympic games really and only nineteen Seventy-Six the first time in Toronto so long and it's been in paralympic games ever since it's probably been close to close to fifty years. It's coming up and also well, yeah, so it's been around for a while. But I like, you know, like I said, I've never heard of a sport before I was nine. It was a it was an 04 but I heard of it for the first time and just I was hooked and that was it nothing credible and correct me if I'm wrong, but in 2016 when you went to the Paralympics you were New Brunswick only paralympian that attended I was your bio somewhere online. Well, so I was I was at the only way limpian that was from New Brunswick Shane Dobson was zero so from from. Latex, but sorry Shana didn't mean to Thursday. But yeah, but you know, it's uh, there's wasn't a whole lot of global players from New Brunswick at that point. We were really a small group especially from New Brunswick and I don't really have a team here. So I had to train with new with Nova Scotia for a well and play with them and that's kind of how I went my bill my way to to get on a national team I guess on a senior-level. I started playing with Nova Scotia and 2011 and played with them until two years ago. Really. So yeah. Wow and what was that like going to The Parallax it was you know, such an honor such such a great great experience to you know, have your the maple leaf on your chest really and represent your country. It's it's an honor and I'm just quite a remarkable experience. It's you know, I have a lot of friends that ask me at the time. Like how was it and it's it's so hard to describe cuz log It's a great feeling that you almost have to be there to to feel through all those emotions. But for me, it was it was quite remarkable because I had you know, my younger brother was there both my parents were there too and my sister didn't make it obviously because she wasn't she was starting school. I was in September. So I was a little tough for her butt off, you know, it was just a great experience and you.

It will be a long time before it replaces some of the CO product when you think about when electric vehicles became popular, it was when they were able to demonstrate utility that was equivalent to a conventional vehicle and we're a little way away. "What's the difference between Texas state where Kobe one thousand nine is running rampant and Rhode Island, state where they quickly got the pandemic under control, even as its neighbors were having huge outbreaks simple. Rhode Island had a plan. Texas had grit and when it comes to public health turns out. A plan beat grid every time. Last time we had the governor Gina Raimondo on the show and cheese created a Kobe haven even as she runs the most second, most densely populated state in America does matter small. What matters density how? She came up with a plan. That was toughest nails, mandatory mass social, distancing robust contact tracing system. The covers, ninety five percent of the state remodel got there because she used public private partnerships. She's a former venture capitalist with lots of business, and she rapidly put them to work including with salesforce dot com as for Texas. Governor Greg Abbott just reopened the state betting that the virus was already beaten, or the Texas would somehow be tough enough to shrug it off. Hey, man! Him But there was a lot of wishful thinking, Lone Star state and surged Cova cases to a record high yesterday shows. We haven't beaten anything. Honestly, Texas is lucky. When the pandemic hit the northeastern of this year, we next to nothing about it. We thought it was a lung. Disease turnouts more of a circulatory disease. We were told that would make a difference. We didn't know which preexisting conditions make you most at risk. We did know which drugs can help. Reduce the mortality rate. We didn't have a clear idea of how it spread or even contagious was covid. Nineteen is a novel. And novel means we have no immunity, and we know nothing so when the outbreak in the northeast start it'd be made mistakes. The worst was when the authorities told us not to bother with Nass that colossal blunder kill thousands of people I don't know if they were trying to prevent a run. One Mess said that we have some left for doctors. Nurses Remember and ninety five s were in very short supply, or was pure stupidity either claiming was the former. IS THE WAY IT turns out. Miss are the best way that we know at this point thought spread in lieu of vaccine. The Chinese New South Korea's new timeline, especially new and the governor island new it though it took weeks for the rest of the country to follow suit. Some other Texas didn't get the memo. Master suggested not required some this mask issues become. Become a weird culture war battle I mean it's crazy. It's nuts if people don't wear mass and you don't have a robust system of contact tracing then you're going to get a horrific outbreak like one. We're seeing in Texas and you can't even find out who is there to be infected. What the heck were they expect? Every public health expert told us was inevitable. So. Now is holding atropine. which was the last thing governor? Abbot wanted to do, but he doesn't really have a choice. Now that many of the states hostels are getting overcrowded I. Think the West is clear. When you reopen your Konami, you need to make mass mandatory. Otherwise, the virus comes right back now. Obviously, there are parts of the country where you don't need a mask i. hear people if you live. Live in a rural area and state with no outbreak, probably not a risk, but for for everyone else, especially in high density states. We know miss about pretty much all we got the cheapest easiest best way to stop the spread when the CDC told US forget about mass march that was a terrible decision, but now everyone knows better and the fact that many of our leaders still refuse to push mass. As the solution, the president won't even wear one I'm finding. It's inexcusable. We just went through this. The northeast spent months kidney initial apple under control so I'm begging, please. "Talk pets on pet. Life radio dot com. Welcome back to save approach. We are talking with pen farthing from the now's that charity and Saudi. Pets for vets New Brunswick. So thank you guys for taking the time today. This is a very meaningful topic. So I don't know who can explain this. I, but what's your story and working with each other? How do your operations come together to fail the bigger mission or picture? Well, I suppose I can start. I heard about now Zad over social media. And we heard about buddy who was dog that was rescued by an Australian soldier and brought to now Zad for safekeeping. And he was there for about a year and was not being adopted. So in all call went out over now is that over the internet about whether or not somebody could adopt this dog, and we decided that we could because we were also adopted other dogs in Canada, and we have a big one hundred acre farm in New Brunswick. So we ended up buddy and a lovely dog. He's very independent. We already had a buddy. So we renamed Murphy, and he's very long legged white hound dog. They get a glorious winter for which is what he's got right now. Hurt over anything. So if you can't stand a barking dog, you should not get one of these dogs, and in New Brunswick were affiliated with that base gauge town Canadian army base, and I see a lot of soldiers with PTSD. I'm a physician, and it just seemed to come together about getting these dogs dogs are fantastic for people with PTSD and some of the now's had dogs. We're going to the US to help soldiers with PTSD. And I thought perhaps we could bring them over here for our soldiers with PTSD. So we had met Penn in Pennsylvania, actually. And I asked him if we could get together and Dopp these dogs and bring them over. That's how you guys met in the US. And they were they in Afghanistan, and Ana how did you how did you fit in the picture here? Supporting Sandra doing the album with reading and getting information and general support and also one of the things that was important to us as well. L is is getting the dogs to take place in just helping out in general and training and things like that with the dog. So sandy Serb a big driver in the training field now and providing support right now, that's amazing amazing too. I haven't really talked to a lot of Canadian organizations. I'm glad that you guys are out there the east. I'm I'm from Toronto. So I'm not too far away. So I'm glad that you guys are doing that. Are you there? I did. Thanks very much. Yeah. So I've read a little bit about your story. And I find it really fascinating. So maybe you can talk to us about when was that moment when you decided that you wanted to pair rescue dogs at the veterans had I know you did some work abroad, maybe get into that a bit started. So went out of that, she's serving marine commando down in Helmand province, Afghanistan back in two thousand six and on the ground all around way, the Taliban were deeper this busy most days and to me I was concerned on that job of being a soldier in Afghanistan. And I never even thought for Murphy about animal welfare to appropriate payment. Nova sip, sadly, some of the Afghan police compound with us for actually organizing talks fights. Dogs off the streets. Yeah. Just just two dogs off the streets and because territorial the dogs are once each other dot com. Policemen. But actually, you know, news is a spoils, and they were making these folks fight. And there was no way you always just gonna allow them to do. So I signed comes a bigger than that. So I jumped in broke up it's outside, and I didn't realize one of those folks that have been used in the fight, but actually running talk compound and hide himself away. And that's what I found even dog. He was. Chopped off his title is missing yet the scars on his face from the fight be made say fostered, and he just didn't like people I still when I still had to get him out. So that none of my soldiers don't fit predecessor twenty get him out. Bonded. He became trustworthy. He would trust me. I think maybe because I've lots ability brisket sake. And then I realized actually for the ten minutes each day with they're chili now. And that was just something that wasn't nobody happy my daily routine. There wasn't any time to chill, but I can actually sit with this dog. And just forget about Afghanistan pretend always somewhere else. And I think that's. And I realize the connection and the power that these folks have actually helped people like me at the time get through. I was dating the future folks helping soldiers they come back to the country up. There's still a massive problem with soldiers going back to the US. It's kinda who is struggling to do with every scene and being true to. Nicole? Yeah. And dogs have this amazing ability to be upset connect with those soldiers. And and help them get through that predecessor not how this whole journey that we're now on we'd only had signed began and it's just an app. See amazing now, how do you even keep tabs of witch soldiers that have finished their term and have come back to the US and Canada, and which dogs they actually hung out with over there. How do you keep tabs of that? Yeah. Oh, that's. Fina rule. Rain saw in Afghanistan big shot at the administration that goes behind this organization. I'll tell you. It's a fabulous time. See amazing, and I can't take credit for what do you make them happen? Do you want to say anything because now has the issue say you're inside the first shelter in Afghanistan? But we also have the first ever animal and this animal clinic is actually minds by the first female, Afghan national should we trained to be? Vegetarians and east coast every single day that helping with the soldiers again just us they'll go to three hours clinic, the talks will come to us. Dan vaccinated, and then once respond to the soldiers whose who made you vote you talk to them. Well, it being on the front of mind that and that's kinda stand or. Yeah. They come Justice that actually now we'd like to adopt one of your dogs. We didn't have the treaty. Well, route ten to look up to dope, it we'd like to make that connection. Now. You know, people like sandy. In China do helping us to help pay these up with soldiers. And because you know, I said we can just do we need this amazing team. And thanks. He knows that has an amazing team supporters out that worldwide to making the difference. That's amazing. I love hearing storms and good for you pen and said he so we're going to have a quick break. And we'll continue with our topic of rescue dogs transforming into service dogs..

Obviously, the the weight of the evidence is incredibly overwhelming. But from a legal perspective there are so many appealable issues that I think the to stick out the one you mentioned about the prosecutors promise and all that. And I think that was a little bit weaker especially about whether it's been written down. But the other thing is the doctrine of chances which is Jimmy. I think legally suspects and contributed considerably to conviction in the second trial. I think that is an issue that's ripe for peel. Ultimately, I think Cosby obviously, chilly died, which could be very soon. Some people who serve accept their fate and try to arm and go through the sex offender treatment, whatever else man and. Side of that three to ten years. I think realistically the sentence is pretty much where would have ended up. People have been confinement, etc. Etc.
