"And Jack Buggit is my guest this hour, who sat in the air chair for 15 years on the other side of myself and John Signal in Jackson or Disk Institute of Pittsburgh. New Zain. Okay, Jack. You had some amazing celebrity encounters. One of mine was One that I never first saw where it would take me and that was meeting Bruno Sammartino. And had you ever met Bruno? Yes, Larry. You know of all of the people. I've been fortunate enough to meet over the years. Bruno Sammartino, I think is my all time favorite. He was He was The most soft spoken Well mannered gentleman I have ever met in my life. And that just be belied his appearance because brutal of Bruno looked like he could throw a bus into the river. I want a warm, friendly guy and we had a chance to spend. You know, attorney three banquets and I think Wedding reception with Bruno and his wife, Carol, and he was just a terrific guy and the most honest, honest, assuming world champion That you would ever meet. But wait a minute. You said, Uh Bruno and Donald Trump and Arnold Schwarzenegger? Yes. So I have three brothers. We grew up watching Bruno Mom would come out in the backyard on a Saturday night before studio wrestling on Channel 11 with chilly Billy. As thie, emcee and host and she would yell out. It's almost on and we'd run inside and we had our Chips and BNL French onion dip in a seven ounce bottle of coke and we were in heaven. Unfortunately, some of our furniture didn't fare as well after and we do blame Bruno and jump in Johnny to phase EOE and animals steal for that. So years ago when I first got on TV a Katy K. The producer Roger Shepard says. I've booked Bruno Sammartino. He's coming in. And he had a little just has actually a short autobiography. And all we ever knew of him. Was this hawking, you know, wrestling hero? While he sits down, he couldn't been more gracious, but I had told my father in law Dan Marino senior. I said, I have Bruno Sammartino coming and he goes. I went to school with Bruno when he had emigrated from Italy and came to South Oakland. They went to Shen Li together. And I said, Really, he said. Yeah, I'll give you some pictures. So we use some class pictures and he said, lived around the corner and said As a matter of fact, Bruno's family came from the same town. The Marinos came from A town called Pizza Fan on In the Apinan Mountains in a brutal about 3.5 hours east north east of Rome. So Bruno used to talk to Mr Marino's grandfather. And they were old time friends. So when I told Bruno this he was He was like, Oh, because I went to school with your father. And I said Yes, I know Bruno. Who knew he sat there, live on television Jack and told this story about the Nazis. Taking over their village, killing a third of the men, women and Children in the small mountain town. His mother grabbed him his sister, Mary and brother, Paul, and they went deeper into the mountains. And hid along with other Villagers for 14 months. And his mother. 48 at the time. Risked her life once a week to sneak back in their own village, which was occupied by SS troops to steal their own food to survive, was captured once Was shot in the shoulder escaped. And made it back to Bruno. And this is where Bruno would say people would ask me where you know Bruno, he said. Everything I ever did was to make my mother proud. And he sat there on TV and said they were caught. By a small patrol of German soldiers, the SS and they had lined them up to be executed. With a machine gun while they were setting up the machine gun. Bruno's mother Said. Don't worry. We'll never be hungry again will never be cold will be in paradise with Jesus. Don't worry and somebody In the resistance had found out and follow these German soldiers and killed them right there in front of him and save their lives. And I sat there, Jack and I said, Why doesn't anybody know this story? So it's just stuck with me for all these years, So I ended up becoming friends with Bruno and his family and I travel to New York City, Madison Square Garden. April 2013, where he was inducted into the W W Hall of Fame alongwith. Donald Trump. Who was a billionaire friend off Vince McMahon, who owned it and The man who did his induction speech. Was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who flew from a movie set in California just to do this. And it was absolutely magic that night and I thought, Why hope people remember Bruno remember them. So Donald Trump kept coming back and forth in the dressing room and again. This is Way before politics for the presidential Stuff was on the radar. And he'd say, Bruno, I want you to meet my kids in there. They all were the ones we see now and then came in another time. And I said Bruno, I didn't know you knew Donald Trump is that I don't He likes you in the fourth time against Bruno. This is the man that most most of the money in Manhattan. He's the president of Deutsche Bank and Bruno's A good story to bank and I said in this This guy Jack became like a 12 year old boy in front of him, said Mr San Martino. I Loved watching you. It's such great memories with my father and grandfather. So We ended up with Donald Trump. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the guy who's married to Stephanie McMahon, Vince McMahon and runs the W W E Triple H and Bruno. You talk about Four iconic people in their own industries. It was my big celebrity encounter, and it was like an out of body experience, but I I took up that old segment telling you about Bruno. But I want to talk to you about some other names that have been on Katy K over the years, and I think a lot of people will enjoy it. So I appreciate your patients, Jack. Oh, listen, That's a great story. And before you go now, how many how many people were there in Madison Square Garden that night? I will tell you next. Hi. It's Jamie Progresses. Employee of the month, two months in a row. Leave a message at.

"Yeah yeah so from from a historical standpoint was bruno sammartino the most successful professional wrestling top draw of all time in this country well i think they're wade we'd have to sit down and really look at attendance figures and to to come up with that who else who else would i think this is an open question who else would you have in that conversation that you would start researching along with brunei coup who is in that top tier while then i think you've just answered your own question i think for that first title run i don't think there was anybody that would you could say outdrew bruno san martino or was as popular as bruno sammartino and as well received as he was because again the other champions the other and you you have to remember we had the w we had the w then we have the smaller wwalf indianapolis we have the sheiks territory detroit we had florida with eddie graham we had west coast for a while they had the wwf promotion out there he had the shire group in san francisco you know portland or north pacific northwest course texas all of these never had a guy that was on top and given the push and also answered to that push i mean let's face it if brunel would have been champion given the title in one thousand nine hundred sixty three as he was and a year or two in to that title rain the attendance figures were dropping off especially in the as we call it the mecca the madison square garden he probably more than likely would have dropped the title but he answered the call with being able to relate to the fans and.

"Nineties the wwe kind of disowned him a little bit didn't really talk about bruno sammartino but big wrestling fans were aware even if they were as young as me at this guy he was one of the legends there was bruno there was rick flair and there was dusty rhodes and later on you can start talking about the free birds you can start talking about the von eric's but in terms of regional stars that became household names those are the wrestlers you know if you talked to an older fan about who you grew up with and it's before the hogen era those are the names that are gonna get mentioned and probably well i don't wanna say rick i was gonna say probably ric flair and bruno before dusty but i don't think i wanna rank those are the top three of the pre hogan era for sure and obviously rick industy continued on through the hogan era but bruno was just a special case in the sense that he just he just locked on there was something about him that the people locked onto and they didn't like go and but he wouldn't go he wouldn't do anything he wasn't comfortable with he wanted it to be on his terms or no terms at all and you know it really is a blessing that the wwe has taken the attitude it's taken with former talent that they're not so up in arms about the past triple h reaching out to bruno sammartino was one of the best things that could have happened several years ago because now we put a bow on that legacy but i say all this to say that i'm not the one to give you an expert breakdown of bruno sammartino i've watched the matches i've read the articles i've traded the tapes i've done everything that you can do but i didn't live through it i didn't i didn't live through brunomania so i found somebody that did.
