Michael, for me, Michael Keaton was never my Batman if you know what I mean. I've never liked an on screen Batman, really. I think they've all been make sense. I think they've all been shit. Yeah, Kevin Conroy is my Batman. Gotcha. That's cool. I know he's not. I know he's not obviously. When he played Batman once he's in the flash. What technically he's done more Batman than many actors who he is The Batman for me, but he played him physically and flash it in an episode I think in a crossover. And even in that he was better than any other actor as Batman. So for me, yeah, none of the other guys were before my time and they weren't really for me. Right. To either campy or to cartoony or not serious enough. I'm in Michael Keaton as Batman was just little wimpy little man in the suit. It wasn't great for me. Ben Affleck might be the only version of Batman that I could kind of get on board with, but even he wasn't amazing. For me, physically, he was though for you, is what you're saying. Physically. It's just jacked, right? Yeah, he's the only one who's in body Batman physically for me, maybe. And Robert Pattinson, I liked as the detective side of Batman, but anything else outside of that physically he was just so funny. I liked Michael Keaton as Bruce. Yeah. When he was good as Bruce. But I didn't like his Batman. And then I found myself for reasons I can't describe actually really liking Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne because they explained, I don't know if you remember, but in whatever movie that was, they actually explained like his, they did a better job with his nightmares and stuff. Like he wasn't perfect. And by the way, it was Val Kilmer, so it was sort of egotistical. He's good at looking snooty just by standing there. You know, he looks that he's like, he's got he looks that way. And then you got what's Christian Bale who really, to me only had the voice and Nolan who was good at making things look more realistic, like the tumbler, the rumbler and stuff. I thought, I thought Ben Affleck, I sort of dug it when he ran towards a skyscraper when the skyscraper was falling. And I remember at the starting of the movie, his friend is in the Wayne corp building Superman's fighting. And it's falling down and you see him run towards it. Everybody's running away. And I was like, oh, whoever filmed that knew what they were doing. That was great. There was no talking. But man, and I like the first battle in the warehouse, but I gotta tell you, fucking, dude, they burned a lot of goodwill in Batman. Like you see some of the stuff happened and you're all, I mean, Aquaman, I thought was very good.

And I got to repeat that because I don't want to put that energy out there, but let's just say it's enough for him to call the police on me. And dragging me right up on charges. For yelling at him. "Setups for sequels and a universe within this movie. Almost definitely. I know the funny part is we talk about Robin and nightwing and all the different Robins. If you think about it, Bruce Wayne seeks out people that are scarred. Like all his people like Dick Grayson could consider his family murdered. And he seeks a month to be not just protect him as a person, but to manipulate him into being a partner in fighting crime. So he's Batman's kind of sick of the hat. I mean, if you think about it. He absolutely is. He dresses up and beats people up for a living instead of going to therapy and actually using his billions of dollars for philanthropic work. Like I think one of the best points of this movie is that the mayor's like, okay, but you have all this money, like your dad was going to do all this reform program. Your dad was going to do all this. And what are you just like, masking up in fighting crime? Like, I don't know. Yeah, but his dad also had a dark side because he was with fraca and he had he accidentally had the reporter killed. And that's where this all starts because that's why riddler's doing what he does. He actually wants to kill Bruce Wayne. Yes, and I thought that scene was so good that Arkham face off scene when he's like Bruce Wayne and he's like taunting him. And you can see like Batman starts to crumble. He's like, oh my God, he knows it's me. And then he's like, I can't believe we didn't get him, buddy. We're best Friends. We're the same, and he's like, you don't I just thought that was so cool because we can see how, if we put our idols on a pedestal, we don't see who they are. We see what we want to see. Oh, a 100%. And I think in a way, Bruce Wayne wanted to be found out. Because when he's doing a thing and he goes, I think it's about me. And they're like, what are you talking about? And he's like, nothing. I think in a way he wants to be found out. I think he's like, it's a podcast. I want people to know what I'm doing. I want people to know that accept me. I think the whole thing with him is acceptance. I think he's not accepted. And he didn't like the people of the crowds and everything. They don't accept them. They are actually afraid to have it first. They skid to death The Batman. In the subway, when he beats up the people and the guys like don't hurt me, you know, he's like, you know, in his mind, he's like, I just saved you, you know? But not until when he falls into the water and leads them out of the darkness, which was very corny. Like that. Okay, so I thought that was first of all, that film, okay, corny, whatever. We can call it what it was, but that shot was beautiful. It was actually mostly all filled with that flare as the only light. And I think it was good for his character development because we see him going from like I am just as I'm vengeance to I am the light and that okay, so this might be like, it's not like a stretch and it's not corny, but I just saw sonic two, so I'm gonna plug sonic two real quick because if you haven't seen it, it's amazing you need to watch it. It's so so good. But in sonic two, a quote that really resonate me and I thought about while I was rewatching the movie, it says, being a hero isn't about taking care of yourself. It's about taking responsibility for other people. And I think it's so funny that that quote applied so much to this movie and how Batman transformed himself and how he changed in that part because we see him only caring about himself beating up people like you use all these people as criminals of his father. That killed his parents. And then we see him taking responsibility and actually leading these people a safety and trying to help them air and like, I don't know, I thought it was really interesting. I thought it was corny, but it was more symbolic than that. Okay, so the list of Batman was from when I grew up, Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale. Good. Ben Affleck, no, and then Robin pats. And I think Robert Pattinson is a great one. I think he is a great actor. I think he showed us this in good time and antenna and in the lighthouse. And I think he really embodied this Bruce Wayne Batman. I was convinced of both when I watched it. Yeah, I liked it. I mean, as far as a lot of The Batman, I thought he did a good job. I mean, you know, a lot of times, people think about Michael Keaton. They're like, oh, Michael Keaton was a great Batman. But when this first came out, when Batman first I was there, people weren't thrilled about Michael Keaton being filmed as like Batman. People were like, oh my God, because he was a comedian. And they were like, how is he going to bring anything to Batman? And now he's one of the most iconic Batman that we have. I mean, compared to anybody else. I mean, Robin patson is probably the second best. I mean, Christian Bale, Christian Bale, I love you, but I think this guy did a good job. Exactly. And one thing I hate about having this movie come out and I don't know why it is, is that it's going to compared so heavily to the Nolan batmans. Whereas the Nolan batmans when they came out were able to stand on their own and not really get compared to other batmen. So I think it's an unfair metric because I think this one is better. I don't like gadget suave Playboy Batman. I don't think it's realistic and I think it's kind of corny. Yeah, this is very darker. I mean, it's more like if someone really were to snap and be a Batman, this kind of fit the scenario, not like the guys like a billionaire he buys. He brings in all these gadgets and multi-million dollar things that first of all, shipping and packing, they'd have to find a way to get that in there and the people would fall back to what's going on. But it was more like realistic where this guy was just a guy that has millions of dollars. He's messed up in the head and he has stuff, but he doesn't like overdo it. It's more of his knowledge than his ability to buy stuff. Exactly. And I think that's so different from the newer batmans like Christian Christian Bale and Ben Affleck, where there are these high-tech gadget cool Batman like training with Raza ghoul and being like these mega fighter almost like godlike creatures and it's like or like people and it's like, okay, but that's not Batman as a detective. He's a recluse. He is like Howard Hughes of Howard Hughes wanted to actually leave the house at some point. You know what I mean? And I thought that Robert Pattinson walked the line of being able to interact in public as Batman and then interacting in public as Bruce Wayne. And I don't know, I think that he hesitated in the scene with riddler in Arkham because he sees riddler in himself and he can see why the riddler relates to him. And then but then also for the first time he was also related to Selena for probably the first time in his life someone who's his age, you know? Yeah, and like the whole relationship with Selena kind of was like really quick. It was like, you know, I met you. Things are going bad. Kiss me. I mean, I was kind of like, because in the books, it takes a while for Batman and Selena to get together. They don't just fall in love. Like a lot of stuff goes on between those two. And it's more like foreplay. You know, and then they stop falling in love. And then this was this right away, you know, I love you. I love you too. And I was like, no, no. You gotta give them time. Build it up. And I think they will. And I think their romance was kind of like a throwaway just to show that this was probably Batman's first experience with a romantic relationship. So yeah, he doesn't know what to do. I'm convinced when I watch this movie that he's never talked to a lady outside of Selena or the mayor. Convinced, because you just only talk to Alfred and like his housekeeping, oh grind his housekeeper as a lady, but like those people I don't think he counts as people that he sees and can connect with, you know? So I thought it was really interesting. Andy Serkis plays Alfred, and that's claw from the Black Panther movies. So I thought that was really interesting. And he also, he does the golem. And this is not the first time Andy Serkis and Matt Reeves had collabed because he was also in war for Planet of the Apes and the other planet they rise of Planet of the Apes, rise for war of planets. I don't know. They've worked together before though. I loved Andy Serkis and I thought this scene in the hospital between him and Robert Pattinson was great. I thought it really showed that Batman can care for people outside of himself and that is Alfred. He has a weak spot in its Alfred. And I loved to see it. Yeah, I like the stuff that they're doing with the new Batman. Like, they're coming up with all kinds of stuff about Batman. And it's good because I'm a marvel person. It's the shirt says novel if you didn't see it. It's marvel. I love Marvel Comics. That's what I grew up on. But on D.C. side, I love Batman. I thought Batman was great in the Teen Titans. So to be Batman, it's an iconic role. People always knock D.C., but to be Batman is iconic. Like Adam West, the Michael Keaton. I mean, people look to that for like, you know, you've got to be a real good Batman. I thought this guy did a good job. Absolutely. And going back to how iconic, the character of Batman is, I think when you're growing up and you hear of superheroes, the first ones you think of are D.C. ones. They're Superman and Batman. Granted, I think now marvel is having this bigger resurgence. I think it's just because they have a better marketing and writing team behind them that can actually plan out all these movies. They don't have failings within their actors or if they do they cover it up and get them out quick. That's a Disney money. But so I think that I think that Robert Pattinson coming from getting famous from a movie like Twilight and then becoming Batman in this. Era is amazing because I think he does such a great job. "Different launch table. And I don't know, from my perspective, it was almost a little too dark. It was almost a little too exhausting. And I think that's what kind of takes away that last point or two. And it's like, in my review, it's like to me this was almost like a study of how miserable it is to be Batman. How awful that burden must be. Yeah, I think your review said it really well. It just made you feel like being Batman just fucking sucks. And I remember Jerry Seinfeld had a bit about you've got to, I think it was about James Bond where it's like, you know, he's talking about James Bond. You got the supermodels, you got the fucking badass sports car. You got a license to do whatever the fuck you want. I just said that. Why not smile every now and then? You know, it's like I think that about Batman. It's like, you got this. You're a superhero. You've got the bulletproof sports car. You got the utility belt and the cape. It's like, why not be in a better mood every now and then? Jerry Seinfeld is also a Superman. So he doesn't really have much perspective on being anything other than all powerful God. He definitely team can't. Scenario. Superman has nothing to do with this. Yes. Yeah. Well, and that's a point that this director has made is that this Batman is not going to appear in any larger DC Universe films. Which probably frees him up to truly make him as dark as possible. Yeah. But yeah, it's like, I don't know. I was waiting for a little more fun in it. And I know that the movies don't have an obligation to be fun. They don't have an obligation to be good to see the Bruce Wayne Playboy. Yes. Which I thought Christian bail even did well. I thought he was a great Bruce Wayne. Of I own this hotel now. That kind of thing. It's like, he brought that kind of swagger to those three movies. I thought he kind of the idiot Playboy. He played that part really well. He did the alter ego well. The movies had a lot of fun with that. I even think Michael Keaton did a great job. I think Michael Kean was great on both sides. As Bruce Wayne and Batman. But even those movies had that kind of fun kind of humor that is very, very in short supply. And I think if we do get a sequel of this Batman, I do want to see him grow into the Bruce Wayne role. And see a little bit more of how that kind of fleshes out because the way that this movie portrays Bruce Wayne is very much as a reclusive billionaire. Yeah. And you don't see a lot of Bruce Wayne. And I appreciate that for this movie and the way they told the story. But I think you can't tell another story without addressing that Bruce Wayne eventually has to come out. He has to maintain that facade. If he wants to be Batman. Otherwise, you start to realize that someone's going to start asking questions. Yeah. No, I agree. Where would you put Pattinson in the hierarchy of batmans? In the hierarchy of Batman, you know, so there's always the conversation of Batman actors are either a good Bruce Wayne or a good Batman. And I think he was a great Batman..

"I am vengeance. Basically. Yeah, we didn't get a lot of, I mean, we got a lot of emo Batman. And I think my go to is he put the goth back in Gotham. We got a lot of dark and brooding Bruce Wayne. And I think this movie got the perfect balance of Bruce Wayne to Batman for what this movie was. It was like 85% Batman 15% Bruce Wayne. Yes. And I think that's the perfect amount. I think for where his character was and where the story was telling, I wanted to see Batman. I didn't want to see Bruce Wayne. And we got to see detective Batman basically. It was great. Yeah. I think that's something that's been missing from a lot of The Batman movies that have existed over the last couple of decades. Even though Nolan version. Yeah. I mean, even the Nolan version was like, it was an action movie. It was an action movie that had Batman in it. Yeah. This was Batman the character was comic book Batman. He was a detective. He was seeing things that other people weren't seeing. But then he was also being a bulletproof badass walking through hallways. Yeah. I thought it was really good. It was a good balance of that for sure of the iconic thing that made you see it in the trailer so I'm telling you to give anything away, but when he catches up to the penguin and it's like you see him in slow motion getting out like what the framed by the burning wreckage, yeah, and it's slow motion. It's like, that's a great shot. Yeah. And that's a good action shot of Batman, and that's an iconic. I think they'll be one of the iconic images of the movie. But I did love the detective side of that where he is like Law & Order Batman. Sherlock Holmes Batman. Reading the scene and figuring out the mystery behind it all. I did enjoy that. How quickly he could solve the riddler's riddles faster than a layperson could, because he's just so sharp still on top of it. Which is classic Batman. The riddler is a Batman villain for a reason, is because Batman is really good at solving. Not puzzles, but mysteries. Yeah. So I think they did a good job of doing the riddler as well. I'm not going to get into too many spoilers. But I think the villains in this were really good. Zoë Kravitz. It was awesome as catwoman. I think she was tremendous on screen. Well cast, yeah. I love that one like you cannot watch any kind of fantasy movie but that was us but then the lord of the rings is like dragons. Gotham Knights doesn't have Batman in it and Suicide Squad
"Gotham Knights is the next game from the developer behind Batman Arkham. And Batman isn't in it? DC held its massive DC fan dome event this weekend where they shared all kinds of panels and trailers for DC related stuff. They talked about wonder woman nineteen eighty-four, which looks cool and the Snyder cut of Justice League which look you know I am ecstatic for you. If you're excited about that I don't think making that movie longer it's going to make it any better, but you know that has nothing. To do with video games. They also showed a trailer for the Robert Patents and Matt Reeves Batman Movie, which I thought looked pretty great. I'm excited for that. But the most exciting news for me was learning about what WB Montreal was working on and learning a lot more about rock steadies suicide squad game. So finally, officially, WB Montreal revealed it is working on a game called Gotham knights the trailer for the. Game Open with a newscast revealing that Bruce Wayne is dead and then a cut to a video. Batman had recorded in case of his death and what needed to be done in his absence, and then we got to see back girl night wing Red Hood and Robin basically stepping it up to be the new protectors of Gotham from there it looked a lot like a Batman Arkham game which I am. Saying as a complement, each of the four heroes appears to have a distinct set of abilities and are able to drive bat cycles around Gotham. Bad girl seems perhaps the closest to playing as Batman. As we know him in the Arkham Games, a brawler uses a zip line to move around night wing was playable on a few occasions in the Batman Arkham Games and he looks similar here uses batons as weapons. "Welcome to film spotting so Josh. We've arrived at the stage of our Nolan who've review where we've actually reviewed the films on the show previously the first three films in the series following Memento and insomnia all predate film spotting this week. We're revisiting Nolan's dark knight trilogy. Two thousand five's Batman begins which started. It was one of the first films reviewed on the show. Way Back in two thousand five. That movie came out in June. The show began in March of. Oh five unfortunately. Our Review on episode eighteen of the show has been archived in the basement of Wayne Industry headquarters along with all the other films. Spotting PROTOTYPES COW. Can't hear me out among the disappointed listeners. Who went to search for that review? Just today thinking I'd be able to hear Sam. I thought it would be good preparation you know like to do. My homework. Couldn't find it so we'll have to unearth that at some point. Yeah I'll have to give you a tutorial on searching the archive film spotting website. Because it's there but you can bet. I did not seek it out interest in listening to the archive that I found only went back to. I forget what show but it wasn't this one so yeah I'll have to get to to`real but with that review lost a time. I guess the best thing we can do for now is move on to version two point. This Bruce Wayne and even Batman could exist just like us he had to do Amazon returns. That first impression of Batman begins makes me think that I watched it through the Lens of a Superhero Movie. Perhaps with tempered expectations this time. Though in the midst of our review I was decidedly watching it through the Lens of a Christopher Nolan movie and from that perspective keeping in mind masterful later efforts like the prestige which was Nolan's next film the Dark Knight which doubles down on much of what made Batman begins so throwing inception and dunkirk. That begins played as far more conventional. It has Nolan touches to be clear deception traumatized characters narrative twist but they each seemed a bit better towards the genre this time around something of a compromise. If in understandable one given where Nolan was in his career ultimately I think my original impression is probably the correct one and we can maybe get into a tangent here atom on whether or not a films original context matters. Most I think that's especially applicable. Maybe to dark knight rises but either. Way Adam. I'm curious what frame of mind you're in while revisiting Batman begins for our Nolan overview. Did you approach it as a superhero movie which in twenty twenty means contending with the reality of the MC you or did you assess it more? On a Nolan scale you know from interstellar on the bottom to the top where you'll find dunkirk. How dare you? It's been talked about a little bit over the years here on the show and among its many thrills it shows us who Clark is how we got Earth those early discoveries of his gifts running alongside the train kicking that football. This first demonstrations of his abilities and helping people as Superman. That's the stuff I ate up. Then that's the stuff. I still eat up now. The Fun stuff. I guess that equate with Superhero movies. That is lost the darker. You alluded to this the darker. The more realistic the more serious. These movies get honestly the more these films feel less like Superman and more like James Bond. And that's definitely the case in this trilogy. I think this is where we really see. It happen right. Where Superhero Movies did turn into? Something else became something else in pop culture. We watched it unfold over the course of these. Three movies didn't we? I think that's fair. I think you could roll in watchmen there but that was two thousand nine so this was ahead of that.

The second part of it. I guess we do live in the land of sequels if you can find the audience, and you can pull it off, I suppose, this is a good deal. If you've got a child who's fourteen that's really a teenager, but a fourteen or younger, you can get a free seat on a domestic flight on frontier airlines. They've got this thing called discount den. And that's boy, that's pretty big. Because usually it's infants are kids that are way younger. Now, you got to pay for the membership is just under sixty dollars. But if you fly enough that would pay itself off from one flight.
