"I don't know. I mean, I think it'd be kind of silly if you're Hall of Fame quarterback has a comfort level with somebody and you don't answer that bell just I think it's counterproductive to what you're trying to get done and if we work there's an old saying if you want to go fast go alone if you want to go far go together and that's in communication if we're truly going to preach communication and being on the same page and we're going to listen to everything. Well, I just want you to know and I'm sure you guys I don't care. You get whoever you want that makes them comfortable. Honestly. I do not care what because you've got to do what you want to do and what you need to do and if it makes Rogers happy and it actually fits your system and your offensive coordinator that then go for it, but again, was it ever written down on a piece of paper or did you ever have a conversation like, hey, who are you interested in Joe Douglas? Ever tell you they had that conversation at all coach? No, I think in all honesty, nothing's ever been written down. It's just come in, we're watching tape and suggestions are made. Some of the things that he suggested were had already been brought up from Hackett. He'd already before all the trade talks we've been talked about when we were doing free agency when Hackett first got hired to be brought up guys that he would love to bring in to help accelerate the installation of the system and so there was a lot of overlap. It was just very easy to make these decisions and some guys we haven't been able to bring in and some guys we have and it's been really good transparent communication between coaching staff, but also players and I think we've because of it, we've been able to have a very productive off season. And in terms of communication while the Rogers conversation was being had between the general managers of both the packers and the jets, my friend and colleague from Sports Illustrated Albert breer wrote in his column that you and Matt Lafleur, who go way back, best men at weddings and whatnot. You guys agreed to just not talk about this situation while it was happening. Is that a true story? Yeah. Absolutely. You know, I have such high regard for Matt and his family and it was pointless. We just made the decision to let Joe and goody do their thing. And we just coach a football teams. And I lean on him and he leans on me once. We have such good transparent dialog with regards to head coaching and thoughts and things. It just wasn't worth allowing this transaction to kind of get in the way of that, if you will. So it was just an agreement that we made and that was it. So was that like at the coaches meeting in a text on a phone just like, hey, let's just close way before. We're FaceTime. We FaceTime each other all the time. Okay. We're talking. I was like, and both of us are really like a just in a very organic way, just let's agree not to talk about this and not the GMs to their thing. Okay. So it's like Fight Club. You said like that's Rogers became like Fight Club, you don't talk about it. Well, and again, you've been around Rogers trying to stop him for many years and big, huge games. What have you learned coach Saleh about Rogers? Now that you've been around him as much as you have. And now that he is your guy. What have you learned so far about Aaron Rodgers that you might not know? You know, one of the, one of the biggest things that we learned was actually two years ago and we went down to Green Bay scrimmages against them in practice and just to watch how he practices and how vocal he is. And his demand for perfection. And so we can already knew that, but to have him here and just that veteran presence because in my career, Matt Shaw was a fantastic quarterback at Houston. We go to Seattle Russell, still young. So I was there for the first couple of years of his career. We go to Jacksonville and portals as early in his career. We go to San Francisco and Jimmy technically he was early in his career, even though he was a little bit more vocal because of what he learned from Tom, but he was so as a starter just there for two years and he had an injury in there. And then this year, and then we come here and Zach as early in his career. So to have a veteran quarterback kind of grab the range and the communication and the level at which he does it and it is a pretty cool thing because it's a new experience for me too, just being transparent with regards to the experience of a quarter, but the experience that of that type of a quarterback to be in the same building. And so he's been he's been he's been fantastic. Now again, it's the off season, so everyone's happy. There's no adversity. And so there's a lot of padding on the back, but right now everything's been great. Yeah. And I'm sure you saw him. He's taken in ranger games, Nick games. And sauces there, lazard's there, Bruce halls there. I mean, Jessica Alba's there. I mean, this is totally different now, coach. This has changed. No doubt about it. The whole business. He's a big city guy at heart. I mean, and he's been good, I think he's one of those guys that can kind of take it all in and it's not obviously it's not too big for him. So he's been good. Okay. And dev, you've gone up to salsa and said, how do you not know who Jessica Alba is? Have you done that yet, coach? No. I let them have their personal life as their personal life. "Jaguars 15 to one and like the easiest division of all time, pats are 25 to one. I don't totally get it with the jets. It feels like they're a year away, especially with Bruce hall. I don't know if it's realistic that he comes back during this season. It's more than the jet sides. It's because of Brady two years ago, three years ago. It was very similar situation. Great young team just missing one position. And if we get that one position and he can lead us, then we're good. Now remember, it took a while for Brady to learn Aryans as offense. They came and stumbled out of the blocks a little bit. And then they got hot and they won a new and I did a killing on $1 million picks because of it. The jets, he comes with Hackett, Hackett and him. I can tell you, when they went out to Malibu and all the jets coaches or all the jets brass and two owners and Salah and Joe Douglas, it was like hack it and Rogers having a giggle fest like hugging, loving each other up and that was the bridge. That's the comfort. Rogers has never spoken about a coach like he does Nathaniel Hackett. So the hope is that he comes an immediately as the Aaron Rodgers of MVP lore with all these new young weapons and that he can lift all these guys with him. That's asking. So where was that guy last year? I know. I know, they missed the playoffs last year. People forget. They missed the party. He was a good last year. He was up and down and he had some bad games and some bad moments. I just didn't think he was that impactful. So you could say all the off field stuff dragged him down. Now he's a major injury. He wasn't really advertising that he had a thumb injury and apparently he's healed and I think fourth in the AFC is very rich for a franchise that hasn't been to the playoffs in more than a decade. "This Tuesday before NFL free agency, the Tuesday where we've got not one, but two NCAA tournament first four games that go down tonight. Pair of 16 seeds in a pair of 11 seeds. Southwest Missouri state against Texas a and M Corpus Christi. Why not? He's off at 6 40 eastern followed up by two 11 seats pit and Mississippi state. Are they playing golf? He said, tease up. He's up. Okay. Let me just say this. I've never what's the words for heard of those first two schools. But I'll be rooting for one of them at some point tonight when it's tight. My mom was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. So does it make you want to root for them? I think I'm going to stick on my way to the house on them tonight. I'm going to have first four games with 11 seeds. I don't understand. Because they were the last in at large teams. So then why aren't they wearing 12 to 12, 13, 14? The human wants to get out of the way. The human one first is how does Zach Wilson feel about it? It has got to be really tough for him because he had a major opportunity placed in front of him. As the quarterback of the New York Jets starting from scratch and with a head coach who was starting from scratch and a general manager getting his first opportunity to be a general manager and the GM built a team that performed so well faster than expected that it surpassed his. Abilities to mature on the field. And he was placed in a very difficult spot, New York City's very tough. He also got hurt, a couple times, so Sam darnold could be like crying a river because he had coaches switched on him, he had offensive switched on him. He didn't really have the support of say someone like Garrett Wilson or Bruce hall. I mean, and a coach who unlocked somebody like quinnen Williams. And he's got to be sitting here saying, I had this opportunity and now I'm not about to. But I'm going to be in the same quarterback room as Aaron Rodgers, and I can learn from a guy who is clearly one of the all time greats, and he won't be here forever, and maybe I'll have my shot at some point. That's the human reaction. The New York fan reaction is how does he feel? I don't care. I get that. I totally understand all of that. Everything I just said with a human reaction to it. It's like, you had your shot. Right. Sorry. Right. Because you made a decision on your own? Okay. I'm creating our bracket challenge group. Do you do that after the show? "This week, and then John just get hosts our New York New York podcast and is monitoring the Rogers thing as well because it's just good content for his pod. Shield, what's a bigger story to you right now, Rogers or Lamar? Oh, it's got to be, I think it's a little more easily because there are like wide ranging implications on how NFL contracts are handed out. There are all these, any team could jump in like we could just, you know, wake up to a text that T max is meeting with Lamar Jackson on Wednesday. So the Rogers think to me at least feels like it's gonna happen. We just don't know the exact terms, but at this point, I don't know how you guys feel. I just think it'd be a surprise if he's not starting for the jets in week one of next season. JJ panic move or smart move for the jets. I think it's somewhere in between because there are a lot of warning signs Aaron Rodgers, age, Aaron Rodgers, performance last year, that would have you cautious, but I kind of think guys the jets are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They have to go and get Aaron Rodgers. They whipped on Zach Wilson, this coach has to get to the playoffs, so he's gonna get fired. If the jets don't get to the playoffs, even Joe Douglas with the job he's done in the draft with guys like gorner and Garrett Wilson and Bruce hall, he's gonna be feeling the heat if there's 7 in ten or they're 8 9 next season. So I didn't look at Derek Carr as this move the needle move. I have Jeff fans in my life for like all you gotta, you gotta sign car, you can't let Carl leave the building based upon what? Course stunk last year, like what was I missing with that? I watched them on Christmas Eve, basically with and throwing completion if they incompletion against the Steelers, Rogers, you gotta roll the dice. I understand it could blow up in their face. I know it could look awful in two or three years and it would be typical jets. You gotta do it. Whatever it takes because if you put Rogers on a jets and he poised the way he did two years ago, you could sell me that they're a legit contender in the AFC. I couldn't agree more on car and I've been saying that in the podcast. To me, he looked washed last year. He looked like a guy who didn't want to get hit anymore. I was shocked by the saints. I really thought that was just ludicrous, especially for a team that's in so much cap hell anyway. My take on the Rogers thing. I have two to throw you guys. And they're tied together. One is that I think the Jets have had so much damage with all the quarterback situations they've had. Really, their whole history dating back to Joe Willie wins in the Super Bowl over 50 years ago. And then from that moment on, it's just, they're trying to patch that position together through every Jets fan I have through the 80s through the 90s. They're getting the bubby brister and the Neil O'Donnell's and the boomer esiason and Brett Favre, they go and get. And then they're spending these high draft picks on people like Sanchez and Zach Wilson. And they could just never get it right. And I see the philosophy of, all right, we have this loaded team that from a win loss record completely underachieved last year because of the quarterback position. How do we not get Aaron Rodgers? We'll finally have stability. But Sheila, I think JJ hit the key point. What Rogers are you getting? You're getting this guy who is acted really erratically on and off the field the last couple of years. And I didn't think he played well last year. He was above average, but I don't think he was elite. I don't think he was awesome. And to me, he seems like an arrow pointing down guy. Do you think it was just the circumstances or do you think age or do you think there's a comeback in them? Yeah, I think Tom Brady ruined sort of what we think about these aging curves. I mean, Rogers turns 40 during next season, 40 years old, and now you're asking him to compete with the Joe burrows Josh Allen's Patrick Mahomes of the AFC. I mean, it's tough. Like JJ said, it's almost like, what's the ceiling there? I don't see the ceiling of them as a contender, but at the same time, it goes back to the history Bill you just mentioned, like if they get if they make the playoffs, jets fans are gonna be thrilled next year. If they make the divisional round, jets fans are gonna be thrilled. So if you're asking me, what's the best long-term move for the franchise and like the smart, reasonable football nerd thing to do? It's not to give up draft picks for the right to pay a 39 year old quarterback $59 million next year with Nathaniel Hackett. That wouldn't be it. But at the same time, if you're a Jets fan and you're like, God, it sucks. Our team was good last year, our quarterback held us back. We just want to have like a game on December 29th, where we're like, hey, we have a chance to make the playoffs, or maybe we're gonna make the wild card, then you can sell me on that. But yeah, it could be a situation. Remember when Antonio Brown went to the Raiders and were like, wow, Mike Tomlin must have been just like the greatest coach of all time because we didn't know anything that was happening with Antonio Brown like there could be a little bit of that situation where you're like, all right, putting Rogers in a different place in New York with that media market. "Work. So now we're back in the position of trying on the packers goat for size. How the hell did we get back here again? And I guess once we try the packers go down for size, then we'll go back to the kid we drafted. Is that the way it's gonna work? And the draft choices that you cough up for him, you're willing to, you're willing to give up? I guess so. How the hell did this happen? We were supposed to be strolling up Zack's Fifth Avenue, not hoping that Rogers would be strong down the canyon of heroes. I don't know why that's always keeps happening to the jets. I don't know why. And I know we're solace that he keeps receipts of people who doesn't believe in them and I know he had fun rescinding that comment here on this even on this program here. And how Garrett Wilson and soft Gardner and Bruce hall and Elijah Tucker are changing the culture in that locker room, but I can not believe the jets are back here again throwing a Hail Mary. In the direction of Green Bay and in many remarkably and we've heard this before, Hail Mary involving Aaron Rodgers appears to be connecting. He completes those. He does. And had you listen to me a month ago, you would have been settled in on this decision and you thought about it right now. But you didn't want to listen. You'd be feeling great today. If I listen to you. A month ago, yeah. Okay. I told you it was going to happen. I just don't trust anything for me since you were trolling me about Mike white, a two calendar years ago. Well, this is part of the conversation is back. Aaron Rodgers is making a decision. And apparently the jets were waiting for him to make his decision, but then and car now it's being said, it didn't like being plan B, that'd be a plan a. And yet we're also hearing at the same time he's going to the place where he always wanted to go, I don't know what to believe anymore. It's really amazing that I just came from this event where nobody tells the truth and it was presented by something called noble on NFL network. No bull. Irony not lost. There was a lot of bull there. Again, my top 5 rumors that I heard at the combine coming up don't miss it. So now what? Now now what? Rich you know what's gonna happen? No, stop it. Now what? I will tell you what I would like to happen. I will tell you what I would like to happen. What's that? I want the jets to get somebody that does not cost them a single draft choice. That's it. All of a sudden, the jets roster is being built. All of a sudden, the Jeff rosters got defensive rookie of the year, and offensive rookie of the year, and another guy who's coming back from an injury that could have been offensive rookie the year and made damn well be your favorite for comeback player of the year in 2023 and Bruce hall. And Elijah very Tucker's coming back and scarsi from northwestern who was the top offensive lineman on Daniel Jeremiah's draft board, his comp for him, height weight speed and all that is Elijah verac Tucker, the kid who's coming back for the jets. You got, you got stuff going on. I don't think they're ready just flip. A two or three, whatever it's going to cost to get Aaron Rodgers, and then the cap on top of it. It's not my money it's woody Johnson's money that apparently Rogers thinks is being put out there to cancel him because of woody Johnson's family is the Johnson of Johnson & Johnson fame of vaccine were world. "More obvious choices. The New York Jets would be I am not going to buy into this whole sense that car can't handle the New York spotlight. I think the New York fan seeing car and just seeing that guy that shows up at a press conference with his eyes filled with tears saying some guys not locker room aren't believing and I put my ass on the line and he doesn't use that language. Remember when he came out and he started talking about how some of the guys in the locker room aren't trying as hard and he was giving that implication and his tears I think New York fans would kind of buy into that and it kind of is vibing and it seems stuff is Garrett Wilson like the accountability that Derek Carr takes. I think would meet the moment in New York City of course, some of the Derek Carr moments that we saw on blowing leads. It's not all on him, but, you know, he would have to have a thick skin. And I'm not going to ascribe that he's, you know, this wall flower in Oakland and Vegas that can't handle the heat. He's also not out there to create the heat on him. The weapons there too, man. I mean, Bruce hall with Garrett Wilson and the rest of that team and the offensive line getting better in the defense right there. Car wouldn't be a bad fit in New York at all. Number two on this list, if you want to talk about pressure, this would be in my mind the most pressure packed situation. And I know I just mentioned New York and New England. You never want to be the guy after the guy, you just don't, ever want to be the guy after the guy, and somebody's going to have to be the guy after the guy in Tampa. I mean, Derek Carr throwing him. Evans and Godwin? Right? Don't you think he would fit there with these guys throw deep baby? I don't know. Love to see what their offensive styles are going to be and shard white is a merging as a big time back. This is a team that we all know made the Super Bowl a couple years ago and I don't know what the team's going to look like as they're their credit card bills that they might have created by creating the room for Brady to win now and that window. Let me ask you a couple of questions sort of playoff related here. I want to get your perspective as someone who was in the league for 13 years and just got off the field. Give me and my listeners a little, some thoughts on what you think mahomes will go through, will he be a 100% with the high ankle sprain as a quarterback, how much it will affect them. I mean, to me, that's the number one story as we head into Sunday is mahomes ankle and how much he's affected by that. Tell me as a player what we should expect and what do you think about that? Yeah, I can't imagine him being 100% a high ankle sprain. You typically see as a mock entry at least four weeks guys are out with that injury and we saw how hard it was for him. Mahomes is a tough dude. He gets hurt and right away. He's like, I'm good. I'm good. And then we're watching him jump on one leg to hand the ball on. So I do think it's going to have a huge impact. I mean, even when he came back in the second half against Jacksonville, he didn't make a throw outside the pocket in a second half. I do think the thing with my whole team is just that good. That he can sit in the pocket and still be able to beat you. I'm fascinated by this game. I went back and watched a film of the Bengals game against the Buffalo Bills. I went back and the Bengals gave versus patent homes earlier this year because with the bangles and Lou Adam room older defensive coordinate what they've been able to do and stop somebody's high powered off into some of the best quarterbacks in the league as fascinating to me. And then you couple it with what you just said, mahomes is injury is how do they attack that, watching that first game, they blitzed stump, but a lot of it was playing coverage and when they did blitz mahomes was getting the ball out quick or fading back and being able to throw the deep shot. Now with the ankle, do they get a feel for them early on in the game? And they say, you know what? He's not mobile. Less than a house Adam and get up and see if he can hold the ball long enough or fade back on that angle and be able to make some of the throws that he can make. So this one is going to be a lot of fun to me there's no way he's 100% out on a vision and being able to have a full week of practice this week, which I don't think he needs. If he can get out there a little bit on Friday, I think that would even be enough that if I'm a Kansas City chief band, I'm totally comfortable. He's Patrick Mahomes he's proven year after year since he's been in there what he can do. Yeah. And sticking with chiefs Bengals. If you were if you were on the Bengals right now, would you tell Eli Apple to cut back on the trash talking or you got to let him be who he is? I love Eli Apple. You associated Peter and Shrek or he said that this morning. I mean, you have pat Beverly and the NBA who's kind of that antagonist that gets under the skin of people who's going to do all the trash talking. But the one thing we can say about Eli Apple is he's been able to somewhat back up his trash talk that he's given. He was in the Super Bowl last year. He went against mahomes and Tyree hill. Torched by Cooper Cup, by the way. But the guys he was talking about trash to get enough do you watch them this past week? And against buffalo, Eli had a good game in that game. As a secondary and as a unit, they played really well against Josh Allen Buffalo Bills. And I think Eli, he adds something to it. Those guys on the team, you can talk to them. I know they're DB culture. I was wondering Miami. He was just like, yeah, Eli is a crazy dude. We love having them. And I think that's the perception. It's even last year as he was talking trash, whether it was Jesse Faye's mother was bomb bell, it's just like, no, Eli talks that he knows we have his back. So those guys may not be saying it, but they kind of expect that from Eli puffing a cigar and the locker room after winning the division around knowing that they're heading was calling their burrows head stadium after the game. The problem he has is that, I mean, from what I've seen on Twitter the last two days, you don't see players going after other current players going after current players that much. And car and players are going after him. And what they're going after him about is like, you know, you're doing all the strange talking, you're not that good. Travis, Kelsey, or mahomes he's trash talking. It's one thing. Eli Apple, people are like, you mentioned the pat Beverly. I mean, that was such a great tweet by sus Garner.
