"Com. Copes? I thought you're gonna come back with a little dairy Rucker lagging wheel because I tease them South Carolina, Gamecocks color, the and it's not my imagination. I asked 'em. I be medium impact Brian to look up. It seems like the Niners have been drafted a lotta South Carolina Gamecocks. They might be give me a little rundown less ten years Bohm. Here you go ready. Twenty eleven Chris Culliver member have trouble the Super Bowl with Artie Lang little bit. Never that. Never that twenty thirteen Marcus Lattimore the running back who had the blown-up knee who they hope to could be a rehab project. It didn't work out twenty fourteen. Bruce Ellington, remember Larry Krueger spending a lot of verbiage on Bruce. Ellington a lot of verbiage appro- selling to twenty fifteen running back. Mike Davis, by the way, all Benjamin titan, Rory Anderson, every guy you're mentioning like, I don't know. Well, are they are you ready for? I mean, we left on Friday morning, and it was Nick boasts world and we all on the quarterback. Do you care about politics, blah, blah, blah, all that stuff. And they go ahead and with a thirty six pick of the draft. Now, we had Cole cubelic come on SEA analyst tell us you gotta take AJ Brown at ole miss. He's. Time and he was on the board. And they didn't Embiid you think about that too. And I was disappointed. So is I even though there's a lot to like about deebo Samuel guys. He is out of South Carolina. And he is projecting him as a if you need a comp golden Tate and Percy Harvard have been mentioned, so he's a little guy. Five foot eleven and five eleven two hundred fourteen. That's a lot of speed. So obviously these guys now here's the problem hamstring injuries early in his career fibula fracture came back. A redshirt senior sixty two catches eight hundred eighty two yards. That's fourteen yard catch first team. All SEC, if that counts remember the old days when you cared who made I team all conference and he against clemson's secondary, which was filled with traffic's he went for two hundred ten receiving. So that's a comp right there against NFL type talent. He's also guys returner. He's a return of sorts. It sounds like Dante Pettis now he's thicker than pets Pettus way in these days. Not I mean, fetish ways probably is light east too late. He used some muscle. Actually, this guy's this guy's much thicker better be with the name like deebo and his coat. This brings up the very obvious question. Someone's got to ask like he's got to be named after the guy in Friday, legendary confirmed. During the break that the draft date of DeVos. Samuel was the anniversary date of the release of the original Friday. Honest-to-goodness walks up to Chris Tucker, and he goes, yeah. That's my. So I'm not a HD. I've only seen it on cable on TV. So I didn't experience it like fully. The guy who give me the deebo breakdown. He the neighborhood bully who comes like as soon as they see deebo coming down the street like ice cube starts hiding jewelry. And is is herb and like, and then he walks up. He goes, what are you guys doing help me break into the house next door or there's another scene where he goes, what are you guys doing? Hey, gimme your bike. That's the best part the little bike even people plays a huge role because at the climax of the movie ice cube and deebo have to bare knuckle it out in the street and any knock Stevo out. So the movie climaxes with ice cube knocking out deebo, Murph. You know, what diva looks like right from the flu throw scary. Looking ahead. Yes. Well, he was asked paulie at the combine in February IBM sorry. The combine in February not Friday. He said, I got the nickname from the movie Friday. I call. Name me that he said when I was a kid I used to be a bully, entail, toys and stuff. Hey, let's be honest bunny. Just pheasants Senate. If you're gonna name your kid after a character in Friday, you better name deebo don't name them smokey. I. 'cause more smokey you've heard smokey on the show. Smokey. Well, they suck. You have the best line used got knocked that. They asked him. Are you still a bully? And he said on the field on the floods we need boat, so he joins and then they went ahead and with the third round pick took another receiver Jalen Hurd at you. Gotta do your voice again. Jalen. I was quite surprised, but the Niners are are making no bones about it that this is what they want that. This receiving core. That's been don't forget who led the team in receiving less year Kendrick born. Okay, Kendrick born leads him receiving so Jalen Hurd is he's a former running back at Tennessee who transferred to Baylor set out of your learn the position then went sixty nine catches for nine hundred forty six yards. You got big twelve offensive newcomer of the year. So now, he's you're receiving core. Guys, Dante Pettis the F or mentioned Kendrick porn marquees Goodwin. Trent Taylor, Richie, James. And then here's the new guys DeVos Sanyal, Jalen Hurd, and don't forget they signed Jordan Mathews from the eagles too. So. Out of that group. There's no de'andre Hopkins in that group. You know, there's no Antonio Brown in that group right now, they still to me. And again, you know, unless depots ready to go become Percy Arvin, golden Tate, whatever to me, it's still lacking. And I fell in love with AJ Brown after Cole cubelic told me, but I'll defer to a guy like Krueger who studies a tape more than I do. I stay with my lane. You know, I can't tell you. But I can tell you if you go for two hundred and ten yards against Clemson. That says something. Yeah. It does that's against NFL type talent. So welcome to the to the forty nine or fold deebo Samuel. So Nick Bosa deebo Sanyal too big name guys. And you have the sound. Actually, you got it. Oh my goodness. Look at this Cardi cut, it Murphy tear kids, so getting start respecting his takes where he rejected carbon policies both of you fan peanuts. Don't forget his anti peanut stance. I thought the Carmen sound on both great. He's no wanna stop talking about it. He flipped it. Double guns to Sally from peanuts. Earlier. Is this from the combine copes? Listen, can you explain where your nicknaming your name sort of came from came from Louis Friday, people is also like a billion a movie, and I got their name from my father. When I was a kid. I used to believe here's when I was little. Happy about it too. Take a lunch or to you know, how it is is a proud Villier. Well, anyway. Pride, you know, five eleven to fourteen and doing their thing. All right here, we go into three d depot music from Friday. Like ominous. Dan, any time. It's kind of like Joel deebo coming down the street. Murtha music kicks in five says deebo walks up and ask what you got on my forty is that right? Oh, I see what you got my forty yard. Dash. I see what he said. So anyway, that was big news. And then of course, the punter with the fourth pick, which we put bum baby. And then did you guys hear the one last dre greenlaw the linebacker at Arkansas they drafted? No, this was quite the store. What is it? Did you see this might be? Yeah. This is a he was drafted. He's a relying baccarat to Arkansas. Come on down Dray greenlaw, and he was drafted. And there was an incredible story that was put out by just some dude people like wait what's going on Jerry DALE'S? He wrote dre Greenland was drafted in the fifth round by the forty Niners. I wanna tell you a little story about him. And he goes on to tweet I saw this because you put it out. And I read it amazing. My daughter went to college party when she was a freshman. Oh, she knew very few people at the party. And also did not have a ton of experience drinking someone slipped something into her drink when she wasn't paying attention. I know it's terrible. I hate these stories Ray was also a freshman. Any new my daughter from high school? And he did not know the guy who was all over her in when that guy tried to steer my daughter out the front door, he stopped the guy and said, she's not going anywhere. He was a starter on the Razorbacks. His place was not secure. He was underage at a keg or he wasn't drinking. But if there was a fight he was risking getting thrown off the team in some ways, he was risking everything. And he wristed for my daughter the guy back down and no one saw again. No, one at the party seemed to know who he was and my daughter and her friends never saw him. Again. I didn't ever tell the story because maybe someone would say, oh, he shouldn't have been at that party. Maybe not but he had my daughters back in for that. I will always oh him. So do me a favor root for Dray greenlaw grades. Good. Okay. Graham. Glad you told me that I had not heard that. And that's great. Yeah. Wow, jackasses slip. I hate hearing those kind of stories, dude. That's like the lowest thing you could do to somebody. They're not prepared hearing that though. You got all kinds of people. So that's your basic rundown on the first five rows, Nick boasts of the Trump guy deebo Samuel the Friday with a big leg. Jalen Hurd, the Baylor. The former running back Wischnewsky who's got a huge leg, huge leg. Yes. Greenlaw the chivalrous gentleman. I'm just going to say if I was going to do this about Nick Bosa as long as you can hit the quarterback. I saw this guy gonna catch me some touchdowns. Dre Greenland tackle you keep guys from Gary. Is he gonna tackle the tight end? The flip side that Corey Ballantyne who got shot. Into Pika, Kansas. He's gonna be okay. But that was not. All right. We're going to go down into the darkness. Hello, darkness, mild friend, the kids know that song now because of the movie trolls trolls, there's a feature a sad character. Sing sound of silence. All the kids now age ten and under. No, Hello, darkness, my old friend, and they say the blue hair Garfunkel stuff, man, I love those guys. But still you got laugh a little bit chose you. Timberlake's on it. All that stuff. Now. A little buddies Ethan they were going somewhere, and they tried. They were hoping to get some sort of candy or something imam denied him. And Hello darkness mild friend when he didn't get the candy. Yeah. Yeah. Kids ariffin. So there you go Andy bag and this all by way, saying we're going into the giants that's out there. Murph on the less, your New York Yankees fan in which case it was a Sunday's beautiful weekend that the art did you hear just crankier down to China basin. Go Yankee hurt a saw hot. There are heard it. And I saw Momo's I heard they overtook Molly thirty gimme for that scene at China Basit and candlestick.

"Who's going to do more with the ball in his hands? Probably. Devante adam. So you know, again, we're talking about the cream of the crop here. Either. Either guy the first round of a fantasy draft you're happy. But you know, that's something to keep in mind as well. There's going to be more competition for targets than Houston than there is in Green Bay believe it or not very fair very fair. A big question. Mark right now for me. I wanna know what you think. And again, it might just be a simple saying, hey, we don't know yet because it's still going to make some moves but patriots post gronk. Are you are you picturing dramatically different share for anybody in that lineup in terms of their target. Share you still making there's going to be more additions, and you have to wait and see or anyone who you think is under value right now in the public's is relative to what you think they might end up with in terms of their projections. Yeah. It's kind of pick your poison to some extent, right? Because you have Julian idle when you know that and then you have James white Sony Michelle they're going to be valued about market. I think they'll be drafted relatively early drafts. Find no big change. Maybe a few more targets for Michelle. But I don't think you'll see much of a change there in the backfield. But after that, I mean after in terms of pass catchers, you have that then it's a huge question. Mark. Right. So you could take a late stab and Philip door set who right now is a flex option as the roster sands because it's element it store setting in. It's Bruce Ellington MAURICE Harris, Braxton Berrios, I mean, all of these guys are late round. Art throws at this point. But yeah, I don't think they're done. Is it Michael Crabtree? The free agent is it as Bryant that shocks is all is it a is it a second round first round wide receiver. We don't know who they're gonna add I would suspect that they're not gonna go into the season with with east guys as their top receiver..

"So he could be gone out to this year. But you re. We do need to shift your focus a little bit more towards this year too. Because after Jillian edleman I mean built or set couldn't pass Chris HOGAN on the depth chart last year when they had built door says number three last season they had to trade for Josh Gordon. So I think that tells you pretty much all you need to know about your said, I think he could be number three or four receiver in the patriot system. But you don't want him to be number two. And then beyond him. You're talking about guys like Braxton various didn't play last year. Maurice Harris who wasn't even tendered is restricted free agent by the Washington Redskins and Bruce Ellington who was cut by the Detroit Lions in February. So you're really reaching the bottom of the barrel. As far as the patriots wide receiver depth are goes when you get to their number three receiver. So a lot of work your needs to be done. I still think there could be a trade down the road either at tight end wide receiver. It's hard to kind of, you know, see who those players would be at this point. Maybe Tampa Bay would be willing to give up their tight end. Maybe the giants will be willing to ship out another wide receiver. Everyone brings age. Green. But I don't know where that ever stemmed from any report that said that AJ green with bailable for for trade that people were kinda putting pieces together they're great to have AJ green. But who knows if the Bengals even watch right him? Yeah. That's like the I'm running the patriots in Madden. And I want to some just going to trade free Jake green without the Bengals thinking, oh, what is trade make sense for us. Are you actually mentioned muggy Mitchell who you'd figure you know, as recently as January was talking about possibly coming back and one to play for the patriots. And then ended up retiring at believe last week, obviously kind of lost in the shuffle. The Pronk news. Are you surprised? They haven't tried to bring Chris HOGAN back a little surprised about that. I think that some of that has to do with a family situation with Chris HOGAN, his wife is. She works in the medical field. I don't know if she's a nurse or doctor, whatever she is. She works in Long Island. So last season Chris HOGAN would play on Sunday and then drive down to Long Island and then come back for Wednesday after home games. And that's that kind of worked for a season. Even though Chris HOGAN had a fairly disappointing season for what the expectations were. But I really do feel like for Chris HOGAN, it would be much easier. If he did play for one of those New York teams or there was the giants or jets, obviously, if one of those teams wanna sign him or you can't reach agreement. You're better off being with the patriots than you are with say the Seattle Seahawks. But I do think that there might be some other elements in play there as far as Chris Hogan's free agency goes just as far as him being a comfortable situation with his family. And I I mean, it did seem like I don't wanna get into Chris HOGAN, Ted. But it did seem like some of issues last season will maybe mental issues him and Tom Brady were on the same page or maybe Chris HOGAN was getting. Frustrated that he wasn't getting targeted enough. So it wasn't a perfect situation there last year at the same time you'd much rather have Chris HOGAN is your number three receiver number two receiver. Then you would to have Bruce Ellington or MAURICE Harris. Can I say something I'm going to regret? Oh, okay. So if the patriots can use a private plane to fly down to Florida for out, I'll just say sketchy stuff in Florida. They couldn't get like a helicopter to take Chris HOGAN from patriots games on Sunday to Long Island in like a much shorter period of time the car. Honest..

"I'll believe it like tucked him when he's fifty. He's still playing and let me say this to you. I think these are the types of things that chip away at how long you will play because you can't continue to lose these targets every he'd love playing with gronk this. This naughty guards is targeting the red zone. He's got Julian Edelman, but gronk with somebody. They really relied on. So now, you lose gronk euless Brandin cooks use Danny playoffs. Danny amendola lose a lot of people. These are not guys that are easy to replace. They are not easy to replace it. If you look at the patriots top pass sketchers right now, it's Jillian element going in the next year amongst wide receivers and tight ends running backs are obviously huge part of the patriots passing. But right now the patriots top pass catcher is at least on paper include Julian Edelman. Philip door set Matt Lacoste guys like Bruce Ellington and MAURICE Harris are now in the mix it wide receiver. Don't get it twisted. The patriots have a lot of draft picks. And you know, this may become a team to watch right now over the next month and gronk retires and Dwayne Allen was released. That's right. So there's another tight in that they let go now we have seen this team. This New England team draft titans in the first round of the draft before they did it with Benjamin Watson, Daniel gram grams. They've done it twice. Whereas many teams have not read tight ends in the first round New England actually has an twice in recent history. And it would not be surprised if once again armed with twelve draft picks if the patriots made an aggressive play up in the draft if they drafted a tight and high up in the drek they drafted multiple tidings in this draft. Nothing would surprise me. So get to know some of these names now, maybe they're not available pick thirty two. But I got to separate tight ends. That are terrific players. Jay. Kinton who wore the as our friend. Jim Nagy called the ugliest number for a top prospect tight and thirty nine thirty eight in college excuse me and his team. No offense. Who I remember at one time telling someone was the closest I had seen athletically to rob gronkowski to college tight end herbs. Smith from Alabama Bill bell check as a strong relationship in a pipeline there with Nick Sabin. There are tight ends that are available in this year's class that could fit the Bill for the page. And it gives me surprise at the patriots. Even though they have other needs went tight end tight end when they drafted rob gronkowski and second round. They went our Hernandez in the fourth round. A double tight end tight end was a theme for them. Then it would not be a surprise for me if nine years later, it's a theme for them again. And the I just they now have and I know that gronk is the story today. Gronk was an an unbelievable player for them. They now have about eighteen million dollars a little bit less than eighteen million dollars in salary cap. Space added not that you wanna see gronk walkway through the patriots. But his retirement means about mixture eleven point eight. Dollars in Catholic problem is gonna go spend it on the who is the the patriots are as crafty, and we're socials anybody. So I think they're just become a team to watch over the next month. How do they wheel and deal? And if I could indulge me for a moment with gronk and thinking back to when I when he came when he came out in two thousand and ten I wanted to ask you about that I was in Kansas City working in the chiefs, scattered department. Then reminded me many people are maybe familiar with each team gets to bring in thirty prospects for visits prior to the draft bring him into facility..

"Sports radio from the league meetings in Arizona and the big news in the National Football League. In Paul's new in the patriots, the decision of rob gronkowski to walk away from the game after nine seasons. Who better to help us understand how we got here? And where the team goes from here than somebody other than Tom Curren, but Tommaso Tom ABC sports. Boston dot com here with his Tom. Great Sena's, always great to be here. My corporate cousin NBC sage. The way it works, man. It's synergy baby. We'd pro quo backscratching you name it just don't ask me for anything. So what happened to cause rob gronkowski to retire? That's fascinating to me. Because of the timing gronk was of a mind that he was going to take his time and figure out what was going on. My understanding was you wasn't gonna rush things. Patriots. Didn't rush to make things easy for him over the past few years? He was going to take his time with the patriots wanted to know what the beginning of free agency. What's interesting about the timing is earlier on Sunday. Mike Reese, put out a report the Jared, cook tight end from the raiders leaning towards signing with the saints because he just didn't know what was up with the patriots and rob gronkowski. So starting to impact the free agent shopping to a degree this uncertainty with rob. So I wonder if the patriots said to him, look, you gotta pooper get off the pot here. We're not going to sit here and have our team held hostage by you. Which in my mind, he had a great opportunity if he did hold them hostage to increase his leverage in change his contract from nine million to twelve thirteen fourteen. More line with impact players. He chose not to do that. They choose not to do that. Because he wanted to leave it on good terms. Did he choose not to do that? Because is Willie mcginest broached a few weeks ago. He might come back later in the season. I don't think that that's the most ludicrous idea I've ever heard to take off this time, and then come back allow Jason Witten Allah, any number of players who don't retire retire or it's funny. Tom the way you were laying that out it reminded me of when the Packers gave that same request to Brett farve in two thousand eight and February, and I think it was calculated to provoke from him a retirement decision. But if Brock decides at some point to come back, he just shows up he's reinstated. And they have to decide what they're gonna do with them. And it's one thing to say he'll come back later in the year at a time. When maybe the patriots won what if they do move on? What if they do have a plan that they implement and he decides to show up when they don't want him that may be a way to engineer your exit to another team not that he's ever shown. And that's a great question. I think what we have to do is pivot to the football conversation. They're screwed during a horrible horrible. Position right now. And I'm sure if there's people in New England said, oh, yeah. Time you said the same thing last year and the they hoisted a Super Bowl trophy. And you had another fine right now is the only guy you could say somebody you want to put stock in Phillip does sets a nice third or fourth receiver. Maybe they signed Bruce. Ellington MAURICE Harris offensively they have Sony, Michelle. That's nice. Okay. You got a running game into block and still have Tom Brady. But you're also missing the left tackle from last year. Rob gronkowski was everything upon which that offense pivoted along with Julian nine thirty three-year-old slot. A forty two year old quarterback. What's the point? I don't know. But they had to know this could becoming. So there has to be some semblance of a plan. Well, thinking is that may be they'll they'll replace him in the draft. I think maybe you could try to find a veteran somewhere, and and also draft somebody I know, but I've looked through it because this has been a shoe that's been waiting to drop. There's nothing really there. And I think this is where the patriots take advantage of the success and ability of Josh mcdaniels and Tom Brady to an extent that is mind boggling that you're going to go into a season in two thousand seventeen with Cordeiro Patterson. Philip doors set and Chris HOGAN is your wide receivers. And rob gronkowski's you're running back with Jeremy hill got hurt. And so any Michelle is you're running back and say you'll figure it out. They did figure it out. It's astonishing. Do you see the patriots looking at the roster's out there, and maybe trying to find somebody that they could trade for one hundred percent? But I've thought that would be a receiver situation you Nelson aga- wars, maybe even an AG green. But less likely sterling Shepard those kinds of the players at the wiz wide receiver to tight end. Not that I've started kicking rocks over yet because I was a big. Wow. Well, it's a lot of money going out. But if you lose tyreek hill what about coward off pass catching tight ends guys that are out there that maybe the team would like to clear their salary cap number off the books. Jared cook is still not. And you know, this could come to pass some point on Monday. They does become official, but Jared cook still not official so of gronk and could could happen before Monday morning making this entire segment irrelevant. So thank you for going down that path. But I really weighed my I really weighed I hang up. I put it through my head. What's the worst that could your filter? Let me peel back the curtain here we've already done. This interview wants today before rob gronkowski retired. But regardless we regard. It's it's fair for us to say that as of the time we're having this conversation on Sunday afternoon. West coast time there is a chance to Jared cook could sign his contract finally with New Orleans Saints if he does not the patriots could swoop in and try to take him. And maybe that's why cook hasn't signed it precisely and that's why I hedge my bets figuring it was about a seventeen percent chance that between now. And then he would sign. Okay. So you think it'll be okay. No. But but they always find a way to be. Okay. They always have a plan. Tom. What's that thing that they say about financial? Investments? Previous whatever is no indication of future. Returns past performance notification right asked his prologue Bill this past year was a difficult year for now. Maybe Josh Gordon comes back, and he's absolute straight arrow boy scout looks like you didn't twenty thirteen and they find a great of Smith from Alabama and Isaiah wind goes to left tackle and plays. Great. I didn't think Trent Brown was going to be left tackle last year. Voila. So all those things can happen. I just know when you take what I think could be argued. It's the best tight end of all time. And if you put up, Mackey and Ditka and Kellen Winslow and Antonio gates and Tony Gonzalez. None of them. I think is better than gronk. And certainly none of them has been a bitter better big game player than you take that player off your offense both as a blocker and a pass catcher that frigging hurt. So what did he didn't do much last year in the regular season? He really didn't. It was his worst year. Why because they didn't have anybody to start the season. We'll get triple team for four games. The beginning of the year. He's seven for one twenty three in the first game. You've got his body beat up. Everybody blamed him all season long for them sucking. And then by the time his body did feel better. And he finally said, you know, what I'm really getting hosed here. That was the big problem mentally he felt as if he was getting host. You didn't have time to heal during the week Dwayne Allen and Jacob policy with the only guys a tight end behind him. So there's nobody else taking the rep. So it's like rocky practice today. Greg. We need you to practice today. It's like a kid do it anymore. Finally, he got his brain around it and stop being miserable. But he had a very miserable season. He's been miserable. Since two thousand sixteen when the patriots picked up the back end of his contract. And he tweeted at that time was Duane Allen's contract was signed with the colts in gronk said. Wow, looks like I'm actually taking a pay cut. So since March of two thousand sixteen to now he's felt underpaid. This kind of was hitting critical mass Tom Brady grossly underpaid. And he likes it that way. But he's in the final year of his contract. When does he get an extension and does gronk leaving caused him to maybe say, hey, you know, what a lot more crap is gonna fall on me. Now is the quarterback. Maybe I should try to get more than I've gotten in the past. I think that the days of him doing sweetheart deals are over with why? Because what have they done with the artillery, financial artillery's? They've given him over these on two out of three. Make his life easier. What did they dum? Okay. They they've signed Stefan Gilmore, they've signed all kinds of baubles, trinkets and toys. Well, here's what they haven't done. Anything to make Tom Brady's life fees. They had with Tom Brady sucks at Pittsburgh. What looks crappy in Miami. And everyone wants to sit around and say Tom Brady and the cliff of now conjoined that ain't the case the cases he's got crap around him now. No disrespect fellas understand what you the one has to deal with them defensively. Here's the way more. But what they've done. They've had the money and the cap space to have second-stringers who when there is an injury when Isaiah wind goes down. I've got a guy and Trent Brown that you acquired via trade who, you know, you're not you're not relying on an undrafted rookie to step in. Because you're paying your starters close to market value across the board. That's where we have a nice fiddle quest they'd be much more well-paid middle class. And I think that's one of the reasons why they're still I think I think there was a stat theory. They have thirty eight players. Don't hold me to this who make over a million dollars. That's the highest in the league. Now, do they pay at the pop. No. But you have more guys making good cash. So your point is a good one. But Trent Brown doesn't play as well. Trent Brown played. If Tom Brady isn't getting it out in a heartbeat and joining is an uncovering in that particular offense, and that particular offense when Cordeiro Patterson is taking handoffs because Jeremy hill got hurt and Rex Burkhead certain Sony Michelle's hurt and they're still making chicken salad out of chicken poop that has more to do the offense coordinator than they had a great plan financially. What do you think he wants Brady twenty twenty-five thirty whatever Jimmy's getting plus a penny. More twenty eight right.

"And Christian were going without joined by patriots beat writer for the Boston Herald. Kevin Duffy you can follow him on Twitter at Kevin. Are duffy. Kevin. How are you today? Get a moment to catch a breadth and see what's going on with the patriots. And the NFL has where in free agency right now. I mean pregnancy week when you cover the patriots is like fake ation pretty much because they don't they don't really do anything. They're like the only time of the year where the patriots aren't at the center of of center stage in the NFL because this is kind of typical for them. Other teams are making splash moves and a lot of high profile players are on the move. And then the patriots are signing, Bruce Ellington and MAURICE hers. Well, that makes it more difficult though. Because now you've got to go find out who the hell, Bruce Ellington and MAURICE Harris are and know where they played what kind of numbers they put up. It's not like they wouldn't trade it for Odell Beckham junior, and you go. Wow. This is amazing. These guys that no one knows who they're going to try to have come in. And meanwhile, belt bell checks in Barbados diving into the water and Brady's going on a ski trip. So obviously when you win six Super Bowls in eighteen years, you can do whatever you want. But yeah, obviously it all started when they lost. A lot of talent agency strike started Trent Brown bills to Oakland trae flowers goes to Detroit a quarter of Patterson goes to Chicago Eric Rowe goes to Miami. And Malcolm Brown now with the wall. And so they they lost some good some good players. They're how they're trying to fill in the gaps there, obviously bringing Michael Bennett started things and that was a good move trading for him. Yeah. That was a good move that was pretty necessary to I mean, I don't know if he replaces take lowers 'cause flowers this great players, but I'm still should have a few years left a good production. So that that was removed. And I think everything else that we saw was fairly expected. I didn't think anyone believe they were going to resign turns around. As it got closer to free agency. And you saw a lot of those defense events. Get franchise. You've got the feeling that Trey flowers, we're just gonna way out price them. And that's exactly what happened. I didn't think Cordell Patterson will be back. He's gone up and Brown. From what I understood as of early March the patriots hadn't even talked to Malcolm Brown about resigning. So I think they were good moving on for him. This is really what they do. I mean, they've. Grabbing even with NATO older knocking baller Danny amendola. Dion Lewis all left, they collected a bunch of complex. They're studying that right now with six picks in the top one hundred and then next year. Based on what happened is free agency. They're probably going to have a bunch more complex next year. So I think they're. This next two years the twenty thousand nine hundred class, and then assuming they receive those picks in twenty twenty they're gonna have kind of a youth movement coming I think, and and they're going to be able to reload and replenish some of the young talent on their roster. So Kevin, do you think that they they have I think was twelve picks and this upcoming draft? How many of them how many of them? Do you see them using? Or could you see them packaging them to trade for a player name that which is being kicked around? Maybe pipedream is AJ green. Yeah. I don't know green is on the market Cincinnati the team that really doesn't carry much. I know there were some rumors about John Ross. Former number nine overall pick also being a potential care can't Cincinnati. So I think the. That they moved one of those picks. Now, they do have twelve text. But I think three or four number in the seventh round. So those are kind of throwaway selections, you just take a chance on somebody in Jillian Alvin or something like that. Those guys are low percentage to ever make much of an impact me NFL. I really focus on what they have in the top three rounds. They have number thirty two in the first round they have to second rounders, including Chicago's than they have Detroit's third rounder. And then they have to context at the end of the third route. So they have flexibility to move around. Wouldn't surprise me. If they trade one of those picks or a veteran, probably a veteran receiver, I think would be the position that they need most. But I think they'd be wanna to use some of those because this is the year to me that you want to target a quarterback of the future. If there's someone you like, I think you've gotta draft along the defensive line is a lot of turnover there. I think you want some use. I'm the D line. And then you're looking at other positions like end, you probably wanna young tight end to bring in. Maybe even a a safety to kind of fill in your Patrick Chung is going to retire move on within the next couple of years. So there are spots on the team that they need some young talent. So I wouldn't anticipate them going crazy with trading for veterans like they did that year when they they only have four picks. I think like Derek arisen feature wise all their picture veterans at your. I don't think that's going to happen. But yeah, I think if you can find it if you offer one of your third your third for sterling shepherd to the giants something like that. I came back a worthwhile deal for the patriots. Yeah. We we are before you were on Kevin we were playing a cut from great regard. Who's from Boston sports journal was talking about the patriots draft the past few years, and how they haven't really hit on a lot of players in the party, and that sort of leads to financial issues they may be in right now, they can't really bring in the high price guys. What's been your assessment of the patriots dropped the past few years? I have they have they been unlucky. Had he been scouting poorly. Have they've been drafting in the wrong spots. What sort of your taught forbid, they did something wrong jet? No. They don't do anything wrong. I mean, they may have screwed up draft. Maybe they're not good at drafting. Now, they're great. They're great everything. Coach is that good that even he can cover his own sins. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. I mean, they've made some picks that were I think at the time. Jordan Richards, pick in twenty fifteen people were questioning why they did that in the second round. And it turned out to be that that wasn't really a good tech. And then I think they've had some bad luck with some other selections with some injuries like their for details. Rookie year has really got my field. Knocking Mitchell was like a very good player, but his knee issues kind of derailed who's career? Because of his knee. He dropped me dropped because of reasoning. Yeah. Took a chill shaking around where you do. Players. So yeah, they took a chance and he helped me through one year helped him win the Super Bowl, right? Yeah. Exactly. So I'm not saying that's a wasted pick. But if you're looking in the long term like they just they really haven't what the draft. He's probably since two thousand sixteen how many starters that? They really got. So the thousand fifteen they got very far Nathan, which was great. But since two lanes to like star players like that very good twenty sixteen. Joe tuning has been a consistent starter for them. But other than that you're looking at Cyrus Jones did nothing. You're Kobe traded for Dorset after a year from play a few games but didn't develop into the quarterback of the future that they bike. Vincent Valentine, nothing really there. And then the twenty seven km drafters when they traded all of their picture veterans. They traded for Wayne Allyn, they traded for Brandin cooks and my job they use the fifth round pick the time him. So they were left with rivers who's been hurt wise who's been okay. They just kind of went a couple of years without getting that that draft faster reinfusing, the the youth and the young talent on the roster. So I think what Bernard's point is is one hundred percent, correct. And I think people saw is coming for the past year or so that eventually if you don't have a lot of starters on the rookie contract, you're going to run into some financial trouble because you've got veterans just make more money. That's how it works. So you've got to pay more veterans and the patriots pay a lot of players middle class salary. So between two and four million. And if you do that with most of your SARS that's gonna add up because that's on the rookie contract, you're making like seven hundred thousand so it eventually adds up. And you're seeing that now I mean, there's there's some guy and this is it's an older team. So you have high power with a high capit- McCorvey gronkowski, you have shack masonry, just redid his deal. He's got a fairly high hit Marcus cannon. So when all your. Starters are our veterans. This is what happens, and it's kind of. I think two degree limited their ability in free agency. So that's why this upcoming drafts. And and even even last year to they can get Isaiah went to be a starter. John Bentley Michelle. These next few draft. Classes are going to go a long way determining the future of the franchise. You mentioned last year's draft class. And again, it's not their fault. That is as a win tears. Achilles sunny. Michelle had a really nice year. The one player to me is Duke Dawson was he battling injuries all last year. Oh, they just kind of giving him a redshirt year because he was trying to adapt to their system. Or you heard his hamstring pretty early in training camp and that seven back because he really wasn't able to be on the field much at all in August. And he just kind of fell behind from there. I would say it was also position that they were pretty set. They had a lot of depth. They had Gilmore. This is before Jesse Jackson, I merged. But I think they knew he was going to be a pretty good player. Jason mccourty. John Jones Cam crossing was playing a lot of specialty. They're just really weren't. There wasn't really the opportunity wants to Dawson fell behind for him to get much playing fine. So he's going to be an interesting Claire to watch this year. He's again, kind of honor stack depth chart. So I don't know if it's going to be easy for him to carve out time. But the guy was the second checking you really like to see some return on on that. In fact, I think what what we talked about over the years. They've patch three or four or five years. They just missed on too many second round picks that they've seen basically no return on which patriots beat writer for the Boston Herald. Kevin Duffy here on Boston Herald radio. Jordy Nelson was waived yesterday by the Oakland Raiders, do you think there's any chance he ends up in a patriots uniform in two thousand nineteen. Yes. I do think there's a chance because they need wide sneakers. This is they won the SuperBowl last year with Ataman HOGAN in Patterson, which is really impressive. And they they were kind of a run first team and they were pretty efficient in the playoffs. When throwing the ball. But I don't know if you wanna really repeat that going forward. I mean, right now, it's even more bare bones than that, you got element. Gosh, Gordon, depending on what happens with this suspension or he's just not mourn. Unfortunately, I think you can one hundred percent count on to be available. So they've got to do something to upgrade a wide receiver. I'd just you don't want to go into next season. What's that exact same crew? And even remember last year..

"Acquire someone like Odell Beckham junior because they just don't have the money to spend the salary cap. This year will be one hundred eighty eight million dollars as of right now. Twelve million dollars is available to the patriots. Because earlier today they waived defensive lineman Adrian clayborn so there at twelve million dollars, but that doesn't even bring into count Bruce Ellington and MAURICE Harris who signed yesterday because terms of those deals haven't been released. In fact, it into what the salary cap is. And I think makes a good point there that sometimes if you're not able to draft. Well, then you've gotta go out and pay for talent. I think that's a good point back in two thousand fourteen yet Chandler Jones you had Dont'a Hightower on their rookie deals. Devin mccourty was only in his fifty. So you didn't have to pay all of these players what Hightower mcchord is making now. So it's a little bit different somewhat similar to the Red Sox. They can't draft and develop pitcher. So they have to go out and sign David price train a lot of capital to bring in Chris sale or make a trade to get porcelain. Maybe overpaid Nathan evolved, e so that's a similar situation to what the patriots are in right now and everybody just clamoring for them to add a receiver will yesterday added to. But these are exactly superstar receivers Bruce Ellington from who played with Houston Detroit last year and MAURICE Harrison play with Washington last year. Let me just run the numbers here. Jet in seven games Houston, Detroit Allenton at thirty one receptions, two hundred twenty four yards seven point two yards per catch. Two touchdowns Maris Harris with Washington a bigger guy. Six three two hundred pounds and thirteen games. He had twenty eight receptions three hundred and four yards eleven yards per catch zero touchdowns. I just think what the patriots approached the wide receivers. And we saw it last year when the. Twenty eight different wide receivers. Come and go. They just take like a big pot of spaghetti throw it up against the wall and hope something sticks. Yeah. I think with these two guys they just signed. One of them won't make team maybe very possibly both won't make the team. I'd be surprised if they both did last year. We were all excited they signed. Jordan, Mathews Mathews. Man. He had he was guy who had a couple really good seasons. When he was with the eagles. So you'll be a reclamation project. He'll make the team. He got you know, cutting in preseason. So I think you're right. That's their approach. Bring in a bunch of guys. See who work? See who doesn't. Sometimes none of them do sometimes multiple. Well, and yeah, I guess they're price out of it. But and that cut said that the guys they wanted to have out last year. Mentioned Duke Dawson, you mentioned you want in late, but those guys were hurt. So that's not really the patriots fall. You don't know if they can play or not, right? Yeah. In Bentley was a late round pick. He's a sixth round pick, Duke Dawson. They spent a second round pick on never contributed. Bentley blade. Didn't relate. He didn't play. Right. Because he was hurt which I don't know if they can't really blame them for drafting guys who didn't get hurt. No they've missed draft. Isaiah win got hurt. Right. But also when you look at Duke Dawson was he just stashed for the season because he wasn't up to speed the play. I mean is it kind of like a redshirt year for Duke Dawson, and we'll see more of this year. Or is he just going to be a misfire mean that was a second round pick you can't necessarily possible? I mean, I think it takes more time to then on richer year to say if a guy could play if he struggles this year, I wouldn't say he's done either. I think it takes a couple of years, especially for whatever reason the Cornerbacks in the patriot system seem to come along. Slowly, it takes them a while to get up to speed. I mean, even a supreme talent like, Stefan Gilmore who. We were talking about yesterday. We both agree that he was a top three quarterback in the Lena. He was he was first team all pro which would say he's one of the best quarterback in interleague. He took half a season to get going, and he was a seasoned veteran. Remember, he struggled the first eight games of his patriots career. He was not looking particularly good defense early part of thousand seventeen looked really banning obviously got up to speed. So I think that's a difficult Turkey position. But overall, I mean, yeah, they haven't drafted great recently. There's some of their higher picks. Really haven't worked out last year. You said as a win you missed all year hard, again can't really blame them for an injury. So Michelle worked out very well for them. We're saying the postseason, but then you got virtually no production from anybody else in your whole draft. You got one guy that contributed and again you won the Super Bowl. That's that's the end of the story there. But now going forward you have to overpay for people because you're not developing right? You're on your prior. You had Derek rivers Antonio Garcia, Dietrich wise in Conor McDermott. Only one of those players has contributed to the team. Right. And in two thousand sixteen you had signed a huge bus. Joe -tuni- who has been very successful. Vincent Valentine, nothing, Malcolm, and is no longer. That's the one that really hurts because they keep trying to find wide receivers right in this guy in his rookie year contributed to the patriots winning the Super Bowl Atlanta yet some big catches, but he has just this knee. That's never going to allow him to play in the NFL anymore. And that's one that really hurts because if he was still here you'd be looking at a wide receiver going into his fourth year and being a target that fate that Brady was very very comfortable with as a rookie, let alone he was going into his fourth year. So you would have Eshelman you would have Mitchell you've got obviously the tight end situation. They're trying to see what they can do with Philip door set to see if he can contribute something, you know, you lost amendola last year thought he'd come back this year. But that's not the case he goes to Detroit. So where do they go from here? They signed these two guys yesterday. Harrison Ellington are going to be. Just okay. If even make the team now, there's other Oregon. It's not the patriots. They may just not fit in and he'll cut them, and it won't cost them all that much money. They only have two million dollars in dead cap money on their payroll right now, which means the giants have sixteen million just because of Odell Beckham junior. So I mean, they do know how to manage the cap without question, but you have to draft better. So that it allows you to have players play on their rookie contract and that helps the salary cap situation. There's a couple receivers I'm going to throw out their veteran receivers the big names they've played in a lot of big playoff games. Jordy nelson. And Randall Cobb to wide receivers that are still out there. Jordy Nelson was of yesterday by the Oakland Raiders Randall Cobb is a free agent right now. Poll question of the day. John sap twenty-five. Would you like to see the patriots sign Jordy Nelson binary choice? Yes, or no. How would you vote? Yes. I think they should use that spaghetti method that you mentioned at the top of the show. Why not if you can get in for cheap bring him in guy anything left? I'm not sure that he does. He wasn't particularly great in Oakland last year, though, hard to judge somebody off of that. Because it was just absolutes us Christian dumpster fire, although wide receivers have a tendency is still putting up numbers in bad situations. That's true. Especially a team. That's always trail. I'm not sure what his position is really anymore. What what they use him as he's always been outside the numbers guy. He's six three. Look at them and say white slot guy. Not not the case. Yes tall. He's six three to twenty ran about a four four five at the combine very fast easy. This guy is a guy who was a top ten wide receiver for five or six years. Let's look at some of the numbers Jordy Nelson last year in fifteen games at the raiders sixty three catches seven hundred thirty nine yards nearly twelve yards per catch. Three touchdowns not bad. Actually. I didn't realize the artist is that good. I mean he came solid yardage. That would be okay right now. The first games of two thousand and seven the first five games of two thousand seventeen before. Aaron Rodgers got hurt in those five games. He had nineteen receptions two hundred and thirty yards twelve point one yards per reception. It's six touchdowns in the first five games of two thousand seventeen in game. Six Rogers got hurt his production went down. So he also had a five year stretch from two thousand eleven through two thousand six. Sixteen. He caught fifty seven touchdown passes. He missed the entire two thousand fifteen season with a torn ACL in his right knee. He's a big red zone target. Now. My question is let's take Derek Carr the equation. He played ninety percent of his career with Aaron Rodgers. Is it difficult going from Rogers to Brady? Rodgers is a little bit more off script. Right. He freelances more where Brady is buttoned up. Right. You'd better be in the right place at the right time. And that's where the ball's gonna go is it tough to go from a quarterback who freelances not all the time because Rogers is button up to but he can go off script more than Brady. Then going to a guy like Tom Brady who is the quarterback. And I say that because you remember west Walker when he went from New England to Denver perfect. He went from Tom Brady to Peyton Manning. The other Uber quarterback who is buttoned up and makes all those great decisions. Pre snap going from Rogers to Brady may not be as. Easy as it sounds while he's from Rogers to car Brady, I said at the beginning take car out of the equation for one year. I mean, he again. Here's been with Aaron Rodgers now really an improviser though. I don't know what the hell can okay. I'm just taking him. I I think that greatness probably translates a little bit more than the than the improvising versus buttoned up sort of thing. So as a veteran player, you probably can figure out a play with both in recognize both are great in their own way and be able to adjust to that came up Brady's difficult to play with for wide receiver. I think he's because that's what it comes down to manning. But in terms of where how you play that position. Does it make it easier or harder to play with somebody like Todd dirty very difficult because you'd better be in the right place at the right time the ball's going there, he's not a freelancer? I'm Rogers look, at Rogers is on script a lot to you. Don't have the numbers. He's had in his last season. To intercept. She didn't respect the script. How off script was the only through to intercept and both with deflected good bad place. According to let's let's you did not like that. No, that's one of the most throwaways while that's a bad Blake. I guess it would have been better. If you just throw it in a sack that would have been better than throwing same. Don't hyperbole is the same you go to a go from a quarterback. And again, they they had great chemistry because they essentially came up together..

"Exploding. Do you find time to sleep in a week like this? This is a tough week to sleep. Because like you said, I do watch all sports. This is college basketball marches college basketball, but I took a little break to catch up on all the NFL news to catch up on all the NFL free agency stuff. So I'm ready to roll. I feel great. Well, I'm glad you're here. And what we're going to do is roll through the things that you need to know on this Friday morning too. Big news from Thursday came from New York the team that dumped. Odell Beckham junior on Tuesday has now added a receiver from within the division kind of. He wasn't with the eagles for very long. But if you're a giants fan, it's good enough. He's a former eagle now he's a giant golden Tate four year thirty seven and a half million dollar deal with twenty three million fully guaranteed. That's according to ESPN did not have a spectacular season in twenty eighteen but the giants clearly see something and big cat. One of the things we're gonna be talking about later in the program. What are the giants doing here? Are they rebuilding are? They simply trying to win. Now. A golden Tate signing is more of a win now moved and build for the future. And I think a lot of giants fans look at this. And we'll say you're trying to replace Odell Beckham with golden Tate. Are you kidding me? Well, you're trying to replace gold or Odell Beckham with a guy in golden Tate, who is kind of a redundant talent. Because you have sterling Shepard and the answer when we get into it. Even more later in the show is the giants have no idea what they're doing. And if. They make a completely different decision based on what they did yesterday. And if I were a fan of the New York Giants, I'd be very very upset right now because what you want from your front office. Even if you're gonna stink is to have a plan. And it doesn't feel like the plan is in place. Even if Dave Gettleman says there's a plan. It doesn't feel like there's a plan other than keep ally. Manning as a starting quarterback and keep Eli manning happy and give them this classy, you know, retirements that he deserves do you think a guy like Bill Belichick would give would care about about sending someone off that way? Absolutely. Not absolutely not absolutely not. So if you look at how franchises that win are run. This is ridiculous for the giants are doing at this point. And it makes no sense in going from Odell Beckham trading him on Tuesday night to signing golden Tate. And it does matter that it's in vision because you get the compensatory picks that the eagles eagles get in the. Giants gave up. So it all matters. I thought's on it. We'll get to it later. But it giants make no sense. And I look forward to talking to him about it more. But yet they do have a plan because they say they have a plan which which is better than saying. We have no plan. The problem is what the hell is the plan. And I feel like the plan has changed dramatically. Otherwise, you wouldn't have paid out Obam junior. Twenty one point four five million dollars last August and traded him. Now, you just would've traded him last year. If that was your plan, surely the plan wasn't give them all that money for only twelve games. All right. What else is going on is in New Orleans earlier this week? Teddy Bridgewater reportedly was staying put with the saints as the backup drew Brees. Then he had second thoughts didn't sign the contract visited the dolphins on Wednesday night. And then on Thursday at a time when he was trying to decide between the saints and the number two spot and the money that goes along with it and the dolphins and the number one spot at least until they draft a quarterback and the money that goes along with that he chooses to stay put with the New Orleans Saints. With this vague possibility. Big cat it. Maybe at some point. If drew Brees ever retires, which he will if Sean Payton is still there, which is more up in the air than any saints fan would admit maybe Bridgewater can be the starter in New Orleans. I like this move by Bridgewater because look when you're a guy like Bridgewater and you had the kind of catastrophic knee injury in Minnesota. And you basically are saying to yourself you get one more shot, you get one more shot to prove that you are a start in the NFL because this we know how this league works guys get moved on from very quickly. There's always a bunch of quarterbacks in the draft that people want to sell themselves on you'll see it in this draft where they will be guys that will sneak up in the first round and teams will take a risk on it. Teddy Bridgewater is saying to himself. I go to the dolphins. I will be a lame duck quarterback. They will not want to build around me. There's not a great infrastructure there. It's a new head coach they've had a kind of a revolving door of talent. And the coaching staffs in the last few years, go to New Orleans, stay New Orleans hope that. You can get the starting job on a team that is basically a Super Bowl contending team. Right. This second and a little extra. Drew Brees was not drew Brees the end of last season. Maybe this is the year that a quarterback comes in midseason. If your breeze isn't the guy that you think he is? I mean the last six games of the season. You can just look at it. His numbers fell off a cliff. So I like this by teddy Bridgewater. He's basically saying I'm going to stay with this ability. Stay with the system that I know say with a coaching staff that I know, and hopefully I can get my one next shot which he has to nail because that's really the important part. Here is that his next shot is his last shot. And so he's gotta make sure that next shot is a great one, and we're going to delve more deeply into this one later in the program as well. But you touched on something that for whatever reason is not resonating among NFL fans and observers the way it should drew Brees. By the end of the year was no longer drew Brees. And either he's hurt, and we don't know it or he's in the process. Yes of having father time catch him and overtake him and send him out of football. What happens in two thousand nineteen will be very telling how will he looked from week one? And will he have that same deterioration that we saw last year statistically, it showed up? I think right about the time. They lost to the Cowboys. But there were even some traces of it earlier in the year. But we'll be talking about that later in the program. All right. It's time to talk about your Chicago Bears. They lost Adrian ammos to the Green Bay Packers. Earlier this week backfill with the former Packer by way of Washington. Ha ha Clinton Dix. A new addition to a bears defense that will be led by Vic Fangio, but Chuck Pagano this year in Chicago. And that's an important part because I think actually ha ha Clinton Dix fits well with Chuck forgotten system. I love this deal for the bears because of how how much they paid for three and a half million dollars on a one year deal. Amost is a is a nice safety. He is this is going to sound crazy. He's a safe safety. He's not a big play guy. But he knew you can rely on him. But I think if you watch the tape, and if you watch the bears he had the benefit of playing next to a guy in Eddie Jackson, who is very very good. And now you have ha Clinton Dix going back to with his Alabama teammate. They played together. I'm pretty sure Eddie ha Clinton Dix recruited Eddie Jackson to Alabama. So these guys have a history together you have to safeties now that can make huge plays maybe a little riskier because they're both going to be able to make those places like you said Amos was the safe safety. But I think the bears got better at this position in for a cheaper amount. They didn't have to commit long-term to ammos. They get one year deal cover proven deal for ha Clinton Dix. And I like this you look at the money that's been thrown at safeties this year. Even though there was a glut of them on the market fourteen million a year for Landon Collins fourteen million a year for Taryn, Matthew thirteen seven five and thirty two million fully guaranteed for old Thomas. Adrian almost got a big deal for the Packers to get him for three and a half million is good. And you're going to see a lot of these one year deals now because guys who didn't get the kind of offer they wanted they're going to want to get back to the market next year. So that's where the bargains come from. And it may just be a one year arrangement in Chicago. But the bears benefit from it and Clinton Dix will benefit from the opportunity to showcase himself hit the market next year when there will be fewer safeties. Maybe he gets more money the chiefs I made the point earlier this week after they dumped Justin, Houston and a trade Defoe. Lord, who in the hell is going to rush the passer for Kansas City this year? Well, they have added former Saint Alex Okafor who made it to free agency because of a contract void a trigger that he met in his deal allowed him to get to the open. Market three years eighteen million from the chiefs. He's had eight and a half sacks over the last two years in New Orleans. And this is the kind of move that the chiefs are going to have to make because you have to replace the production of Ford and Houston. Yeah. Chiefs will probably have to spend a lot of their draft capital on the defensive side of the ball because let's be were like breaking news here. But that is the reason why they were not the Super Bowl champions this past year and came down to just a simple d Ford offsides. But it was obviously a problem all season long. Everyone who watched the NFL new the chiefs defense was suspect. They were giving a big plays big drives. So if you have a guy on a, you know, this is the model now in the NFL Patrick Mahomes, cheap deal, cheap rookie deal. Still you've got to build up on the defensive side of the ball and give your team a real chance to win the Super Bowl and you find bargains in free agency. And also you rely on the draft and bread beach the GM of the chiefs met with the media yesterday, and he mentioned on multiple occasions. Hey, folks, we've got a first round pick and two second round picks this year and next year. That's where our future will come from. Because you get those guys cheap. And that's what you're going to need to have cheap guys. Young guys. If you're going to be giving huge. Money to Patrick Mahomes. Tyreek hill Chris Jones their defensive lineman is in the hopper for a new deal. They paid tire and Matthew. They've dumped some veteran guys. And I think that process is going to continue. This is one of the realities of having a good team. You gotta say goodbye to some recognizable names, and you've got to hope that you can draft. Well and replace those guys with great players, and look it's better than the alternative of not having a Patrick Mahomes. But, but it is one of the challenges in one and one of the big unknowns here, I know, we gotta move onto the next topic. But this is the real question, I touched on this yesterday on the website at pro football, talk dot com. Where's Patrick Mahomes gonna fall between Peyton Manning who got up every last dollar? He could and his attitude was it's not my job to manage the salary cap and Tom Brady who consistently takes far less than he should where does Mahomes land on that big cat when it's time for him to do is deal. That's going to go a long way toward determining how difficult it will be for the chiefs to keep a team around him. Well, does Patrick Mahomes is Patrick Mahomes, married to or? A relationship with. Because I feel like that never gets talked about Zell is ridiculously rich. And it never gets brought up. The fact that Jack Prescott brought it up. Dak Prescott said, hey, I don't have a supermodel wife. So I get paid. It's like that part of the equation seems to get lost a lot of times when it's the Tom Brady takes less to make the patriots. Great. Well, guess what is wife makes a ton of money? So let's see if Patrick Mahomes can somehow fall fall into some money here. And then maybe he'll take a team discount. I do think that he will he will fall somewhere in the middle there because I think guys are starting to see that you know, you can get money other places in your career, especially if you're a starting quarterback, and especially if you're a Super Bowl winning quarterback because that's the type of legacy dollars that kind of lasts forever. So I think he will be smart when it comes to that. And that puts you in the demographic also to get yourself, a supermodel wife, if you start winning Super Bowls MVP's and everything that goes along with it. Couple quick points. So first of all Tom Brady was taken less money before he married Giselle. So already wired to be that way. We'll find out what Mahomes does you mentioned the patriots? Let me just say this on her way out the door. The patriots reportedly tried to get both Adam Humphreys and Cole Beasley they weren't willing to spend. Instead, they've added a couple of other receivers MAURICE Harris and Bruce Ellington, so some new targets for Tom Brady guys who who aren't going to sound like superstars. But once they start catching passes from Tom Brady. We'll all know who they are. Yeah. And did you see Bill Belichick check on the boat, and and on the beach earlier this week? I don't think the patriots are worried whatsoever. Because we've been through this many many times whatever they are going into the season. They're going to be different coming out of the season. And they've never been the big free agent team. Anyway. So I think you know, if you're sitting there in a patriots fan right now, does it really matter. The lose out on Colby's Li I don't think I don't think anyone's losing sleep up in New England about that. I guess Bill. Bell checks. New motto is no shirt, no shoes. No days off. I don't know that that fit. Hits. But that's Bill Belichick this past week. And the patriots still getting done. We're done for this segment. We'll be back with plenty more PF t live, including a more in depth discussion on what exactly the New York football. Giants are doing what we back with more right after this..

"Four two zero four rich number to dial. But I turned to my left, and I see a guy that I'm thrilled to have right here on the rich Eisen show set not only because he is one of the best people and high quality quarterbacks in the National Football League for the Houston, Texas. But most importantly was my fantasy football quarterback this year desert. He is Shawn Watson good to see you, sir. I see you. That's also an applause line. Very good. How's everything in your life size? Great, man. It's a blessing to the Pro Bowl, which was awesome. So that was a good experience. And they came came straight here in good. It'd be back on gets actually right, man. And you you have just electrified the league. And obviously your first play-off experience in the NFL this year. What was that? Like, it was different. I can. Different season, a new energy new vob, and it was good to be able to play in any kind of experience. You know, I guess the loss early. Sean it's happened to so many people. I mean of of the twelve quarterbacks that made the playoffs this year only Mahomes joined Russell Wilson. And Tom Brady is the only quarterbacks who won their first playoff. It happens to virtually everybody some wondering he is it different is very different especially going against the closer. We played three times. They know everything we're doing we know everything they're doing. So it makes the game a little harder. But yeah, it was it was a different energy in different type of game for sure. So in terms of preparation, that's one thing. But when you get out there, you just felt it. Reading then Cincinnati was very different. Isn't that amazing? Because most of the people on the colts to it never played a game before is that just happens sometimes. So when you're walking around a Super Bowl week. How often do you dream a plane in in this game? The biggest biggest goal because dream that, you know, especially everyone in the Houston organization have and I would have been cool to be able to come home and planet, but for sure. You know, especially welcome out of this week. I wanna be planning this year Miami. Okay. And being teammates with a fellow. Clemson tiger in John Ray Hopkins. What does that mean that you guys can represent Clemson at the next level? Another is awesome. Just to be able to have that connection. You know, they have that that Clemson prior that tiger pride in the Houston. Everywhere we go. We always see some orange and a stance in a did you fly to to Santa Clara together? We did. We did. What is what is that? Like, it was cool. Like best friends big, brother. You know? He he two million his wings. Whenever I got there in show rose how to be a professional and how to go about my business. So is good. Well, he's a wonderful. I'm not mistaken said, Tom savage should be a starter. At the time being. I I mean, I'm just recalling the the worse. But you guys were cool. We're cool knew how things went at the time. I remember I was there. Okay. On that Thursday night. The NFL network kickoff Thursday night, you had just gotten your feet wet because you got the second half starting in that first week after you know, it was savage gig. And then you got a short week you got a short week. And if I'm not mistaken, you had no tight ends. Concussion protocol you had like left tackles plan. What? What in the world was that like for you start? It was different. I mean, everything was happening. In quick we didn't really prize wall through Thursday night, traveling on Wednesday olam plan tied in de'andre is really the receiver. Because Bruce Ellington went down will fuller wasn't back yet. So it was really just me hop in the mar trying to make something happen. And we did. Well, I mean, you just had to run it in from midfield. When that happened. I was standing next to Michael Irvin urban like that's why that guy is worthy of a first round selector were being traded up for did. You think when the chiefs traded up for the homes that they were coming for you? Mimic was sitting there, and they traded up, and we saw it actually thought buffalo is gonna take me because we just got off the phone with them. As north. It's okay. Okay. Cool chiefs traded up and we had a good meeting. You know, him very real close in in cool, but out of fill in my gut for was telling me that they were taking someone else. And so a new for some reason, I just knew that it wasn't me. Right. And then, you know, you're hearing with Davos was on your behalf for sure that if people did not give you first grade, they should be fired. Michael Jordan cleats, which one was your favorite one of the table on your behalf. The Michael Jordan. I mean, again, the the the expectation level for you in the fact that you've matched it nor'easter surpassed it, but it really, you know, I know for you. We've had conversations about this. When you called into my show previously that it really is more than just about football for you. How is your mom? How is she feeling gracie's? Awesome. Live her best life enjoying the Ryan joined the the games and just experiencing everything she's cancer free. She is cancer free. So does this blessedness also and and. Is it true as well? You have remodeled. The habitat for humanity house for her home. You know, we had was a habitat for humanity home, and it was like twelve years old. So. The house and was able to remodel the whole living room, the whole kitchen hallways, everything, and it was a pretty cool to have that. And then I recall as well that you gave if was it your first professional paycheck is my I gave to some folks pitcher because of what was happening with hurricane Harvey watt. Why did you do that? At the time. It was just something that we were kind of just getting back to Houston hurricane. We kind of went away. But everything was signed a messed up in is three ladies that. Never complain always has smell in the face. But I found out through burqas that work of says in a front office. There were you know, dealing with hard times. And no one knew about us, and they never asked anyone for anything. So I just on a smart was just telling me to split. The Jack can give it to them to help them up. It really is amazing. Really now is it when you said the Michael Jordan cleats? Did you say that because he's also a Gatorade guy? I know you you're you're you're good many, many different ways. So you've got right here. It's the Gatorade peach blitz. It is available only during the Super Bowl week here in Atlantic back. Correct. Okay. And and your with Gatorade this year would have. Yes. Just, you know, working with get a raise the peach bullets, which is really a limited edition and doing it for the homestate Georgia, peach state, so. Definitely getting that out there. And, you know, passing it out are we so okay? Really, really good. Good. Okay. And what do you think wins the Super Bowl? Steph. I'm it's hard to go against Brady. Well, you have you almost? In your your first, your first crack at it. You came really really close. Yeah. In the Rams all week. But for some reason, the patriots are in these type of games for some reason L, let's put her. Okay. So you're taking the patriots is that because you're not gonna play the Rams anytime soon, or is it sort of. I guess you say. I'm looking out for you. Right there. And so being here in Georgia. Being a guy who succeeded in South Carolina. Are you welcomed here in a way, this is home? Okay. Okay. This is where you're from Gainesville Georgia, which is thirty minutes north of Atlanta. Okay. And so have people reached out for tickets for this game? Even though you're not in it. Or what do you think? What do you think girls going through ticket requests the whole set of Georgia North Carolina, Sacramento? Tennessee, Idaho, south is probably asking different ticket. That's really amazing. Hey, listen to Sean, I appreciate you stopping by here on your Super Bowl week. In our commercial break for our television. Only segment if you see over to your left over there. There's a rich Eisen show logo with a circle right in the middle. Yup. We're gonna give you ten footballs, and we'll see if you how many you can make through it. If you're fine with that. Kurt Warner pro football hall of Famer he made three of ten yesterday. Well, do we have are they all foot, and they're all she's going to be solved set. We had him throw non NFL Duke footballs, and he was very upset, and he'll really sticky and we've got ten dukes for you. Okay. We'll see if you could beat him. We got breezed coming tomorrow. I mean, so this is going to be accomplished. Okay. So. Shawn Watson is set the tone here in our number two. Don't go anywhere. When we come back. Not only that the television only segments saquon Barkley right behind the Shawn Watson. But before he gets a throwing contest than stay calm. Barkley coming out here. I wanna talk to you about ZipRecruiter. And how you.

"In the beginning of the final message TJ strongly relies as that can stay with us. A message similar. Yeah. I think he does a great message by TJ to stick with us. Because you know, there's a lot of things behind the scenes and in certain games that we have a lot to build on here. You know, we have a we have a good young core players that are going to get better have played well this year, and we'll get better. So it's, you know, it's our job to kind of go out in and fill in the pieces, and you know, after the coaching staff and be better next year. I'm determined to make this team better next year. And we'll do that Jennifer. Yeah, I'm not. I'm not big on timetables. I think, you know, without a first year head coach finishing up his first year just things that are gonna you know, we're gonna have to improve upon from everything. So you know, we just want to be we won't be playing this weekend. Like that's the bottom line. That's my key. Like, this is a hard weekend for me. To go home spend, some time with my kids and my family who I have not spend a lot of time with for the last six months and have to watch football. That's hard. That's hard for GM. That's hard for a head coach that's not playing and it kinda re ignites that fire a little bit because this has been disappointing week, obviously. So we'll get back at it. You know, we're working we'll take a little bit time and we'll get back at trying to improve this team. So I appreciate everything you guys everything you need any more questions. Do you have anything else? Got a couple of minutes trying to get me out of here. But I got a couple more. Yeah. Understand. Sometimes they'd be the frustration of the public. He's been here. Ten years. And it always seems like another offensive coordinator will take care more weapons. We'll take care of different. Philosophy hasn't won the one of the players. I do through something to. I don't know if there's something to it. I understand the outside perception what what I know on the inside is working with this quarterback every day. Seeing his car in the parking lot early in the morning late at night. I know what he does when he goes home puts the girls to bed and he works. I see that every day. I see what he does to get his body ready to play football. I see what he does on the practice field. Great example, like you guys are there for the first part of practice. But so we went through the change. Midseason when we had a bunch of those new receivers come in. So Bruce, right Ellington. So Matt doesn't make big deal out of it. Because you guys know Matthews. Very low key, not stuffy doesn't the communities under the radar right? A lot of stuff he doesn't this building is under the radar. It doesn't make a big deal out of it. He doesn't tell coach or his quarterback coach of the coordinator. Hey, I'm going to do this. I'm going to do that. He just kind of goes about his business in a quiet way. Does it? And when we had that, you know, the that stretch there we nine ten we were trying to get Bruce ready to play think BRUCE'S inactive for the first game. He was here. I believe and then our goal was hate week to you get ready. I'm just telling you like from the second day, Bruce Ellington was here too. When he started playing and when he was on the roster and playing Matthew Stafford spent time before practice after practice extra time. Meeting room trying to get guys comfortable with the new receivers. Same thing with Danny Jones. You know, like, listen we had a count on any Jones who came into the year started the year on PEP, right? We had to release them put them on a practical. I believe for a week and then call them up. Matthew, Stafford he doesn't care if you're Kennedy golladay your carry kerryon Johnson. Calvin was here. I'm sure he did it with him. I was not here. Then. To Andy Jones to Bruce. Ellington to Brandon Reilly on the practice squad. John Stockton practice. What I remember seeing him pull aside, John? Justin stocked in practice squad last week of the season in teach them one little thing. Like, it was a thirty second conversation. But to a practical running back that's been here for three weeks. That's important. So I understand that. I understand what you're saying. I really do. But when you live you live in this building, and you live with this guy. It's there's things that go very unnoticed with him. That are very very valuable relieve you. Caesar. I don't think. So I think that's gonna hire this guy. I think, you know, not to Stavridis very opinionated on a lot of things in terms of players coaches. Maybe Matt will reach out to him and ask them about. Hey, call your friend at this team and ask about him. Not sure we haven't gone that far yet. So. Team win a Super Bowl with matins jeopardize your. I do I do. Yes. Divisible? Stephen beard. Now, they've moved up get four Minnesota. Rebate might be below. You know? That would you go with your by your with visual? You're not as this rigid. It's part of it. It's not the whole thing. I think when you're when you're in your own team. You got to see what your deficiencies are in terms of personnel and try to improve those two to improve the teed collectively. Because listen, you know, we play our division. What six six games a year? Right. So those six games are crucially important. So we'll take a look at that. We'll take a look at their their players what they're going to have come back next season. And how our players match up that's part of it. But I'd say it's not the whole thing..
