"brooks robinson" Discussed on Effectively Wild: A FanGraphs Baseball Podcast

"So he's the triple-A all structural basement four years on growing. He's not getting the shot in the big leagues. Well, he's back up to Brooks Robinson. And rather than sit on the bench in the majors, where he'll get rusty, he's going to be sharp playing in triple-A, and if Brooks gives her, he's ready to go, right? So for the time he gets a shot in the big leagues, he's 32 years old. And you know, that's sort of thing happens all the time and crash could have been one of those. You get 21 games and you get 5 at bats and you go zero for 5 and you hit the ball hard three times. Nobody notices. So you don't think it was that he couldn't hit a slider or something. It was that the big club had Carlton fisk behind the plate the whole time. Well, I want to keep it a mystery and an unknown so that you and I can have this conversation. Right. Speaking of how convincing Costner was, right? He's often cited as one of the better ballplayer actors and sometimes Tim Robbins gets some grief you do defend him in the book and his mechanics. But I wonder what you think matters more to a sports movie or show, actors who are athletes or who can convincingly fake it or writers who are athletes, right? Because I think I would be more likely to enjoy bull Durham with a bunch of guys who couldn't convince me that they were ball players if it was still written by you who was a ballplayer and knows that life and it's clear the authenticity that comes through there because we talk often on the show about movies or TV shows or commercials or whatever it is where if you're someone who is very clued to baseball, you watch it and you think that's not right you know something sets off an alarm in your head and you're thinking whoever wrote that doesn't know baseball, they're trying to fake their way through this thing. So I think your background is maybe more important than whether the actors could convincingly bring that to life, but what do you think? Well, you have to start with the writer and but then the other shooter fall the actors better be convinced. I mean, you can't watch a dance movie if they can't dance. So, but you can't, you know, I couldn't write a war movie. I've never been in war. The oldest adage is write what you know, of course. So it starts with that. And I think most sports films are written from the fans point of view. I think I talk about that in the book and I try to write them from the participant's point of view. Because the fan and the player see are watching a different game. Having got over that hurdle, you really have to have television covers baseball and sports so thoroughly. And so well. That we now see instant replay in slo-mo and 14 angles and 20 camera, you know, you can't fool an audience the way you could before televised sports, you know? Nobody know what it looked like in the 40s or even the 50s. So I think you've got to have athletes and there's very few actors who are good enough athletes. Very few. Yeah. Kevin's a rarest of creatures. I was going to ask you about that cliche, write what you know, which is probably what if crash Davis were an old writer, and we're schooling some young writer on the way up. He would probably tell them to say that. But it's also true. So you knew minor league baseball and you knew crash and nuke equivalents, but what made you think you knew and could write a character like Annie? Well, good question. I talk about this in the book. She based on a lot of women and she's based on no particular women. And she's a work of the imagination. She takes a little of that woman a little of that one. You know, I was in my 20s in the mid to late 60s. And 70s. And it's hard to describe the 60s and 70s to people today assassinations. The war in Vietnam, the draft, acid rock, sex, drugs, rock and roll, the civil rights movement was on fire cities were on fire. Quite literally on fire. The river in Cleveland was on fire and they couldn't put it out. I mean, the whole country was on fire. Chicago was on fire and I got political convention. So and during all that time, I'm making my living as a baseball player. And the women of that time, you know, everybody was looking for Terra firma. And women seemed to find it in some men in eastern philosophy and others found it in drugs and others found it in whatever sex political commitment. The whole range, the whole range. And now it's 20 years later. What are those people doing? And in many women had opted to not have conventional sort of marriages and families, or they'd tried and they hadn't worked. That's the more common one. And Andy's one of those women, 20 years later. And she's living alone and she's teaching in junior college and she's obviously very bright and she's people say she's a little wacky, not to me. I think she just, you know, she's got her own evolving worldview and she's on its journey in a search and that's who she is. She's fun and she's funny and she's sexy and she's open minded and non judgmental for all her eccentricities. So that's who she is where she comes from. I'm not sure, but all of that. Yeah, it's funny you mentioned that that late 60s atmosphere, the lead of the story in the Stockton evening in Sunday record about the ports beating the Orioles goes the younger generation is causing upheavals everywhere even in baseball and the Stockton ports had a quote unquote riot last night in surprising the parent Baltimore Orioles, so I don't know. Questionable lead and comparison there to other rights. I'm smiling at that because wow, young people are rioting. Yes. Odd way to put the state of the world in 1969. I mean, was it a young person who was assassinated king that happened during spring training? Is it a young people who initiated the draft and got us into Vietnam? Was it young people were interestingly though? I can't wait for the link for you to sing. How rare is it for the stars of a movie to be as invested in playing their parts and getting a movie made as Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon were for bol Durham because as you tell it in the book, the movie doesn't get made without Costner being its biggest booster and Susan Sarandon doesn't play any without going to great lengths to overcome the studio's reluctance to cast her. So they were real partners for you. They were in Kevin was I mean, she was the late partner, but Kevin was in early and very with great strength and commitment in passion. And as I say in the book, I mean, we wouldn't have got to the finish line or it's the starting line without him. And Kevin and I are still good friends and talk about another movie. So yeah, the question about movies made some time ago is always could this get made today, but boulder I'm barely got made at the time as you talk about in the book. And when I talked to authors, I try to ask them about things that they don't describe in great detail in the book, but to wet the appetites of people who haven't had the chance to read it yet. Could you just give a brief recap of the many ways that the movie almost didn't get made or almost didn't get made with you behind the camera for the duration at least? Yeah, I'll try to be brief because there's a few pages it's sort of like a thriller in the book.

"From the rich eisen show studio in Los Angeles. We don't get, we don't get to fly in and check it out. Earlier on the show. NFL on Fox analyst Mark Sanchez. Senior writer for Sports Illustrated, Chris mannix. Coming up from the showtime drama, your honor. Actor Brian Cranston and now it's rich eisen. What a fun show we've had so far and Brian Cranston's making his way to the rich eyes and show studio right now here on the Roku channel. It'll be a lot of fun to talk with him. We've got a great celebrity true or false all lined up all good in this hood, great chats with Mark Sanchez and our number one and then Chris mannix an hour number two and then with you at 8 four four two O four rich, the number to dial here on this program here live on the Roku channel, which is free, by the way. From every single Roku device, all Amazon, fire TV, select Samsung, smart TVs. Does that mean some sense on TV's R and a smart? The audacity. Correct. Okay. Older models understood? And rich, you said Roku up to 70 million? 70 million unique users? I need to make sure I got these words right. It could be 71. I'm just a cave, man. We're live here on the Roku app. The Roku channel is on the Roku app. The Roku channel dot com is the website. If you want to if you want to check us out on the Internet, 8 four four two O four rich note on. Story I think of every single time I say the word website, you don't. That's a rhetorical question. Man, I could go see. Here's a great story. It's a great story. I'm just telling stories. I got time to tell stories. You know what I mean? And so this is way back in the day when I was a young boy in Staten Island. No, no, no, no. I was like year three year four of being on SportsCenter. Okay. And 2000. It was actually the Super Bowl in Tampa between the ravens and the Giants. Ravens. Okay. Got it. That one. The one with the ravens kind of had their day. Not a good one. Not a good one for the Gmail. But anyway. I'm at a charity golf tournament, okay? And we go on, we go on a bus to go to the golf course, and I'm on the bus with all the other celebrities. Name job, who we got. It's the one where Brooks Robinson was there. You know that story, right? I like that story. Okay. Should I tell both right now? It's a part of it. Brooks brothers. Brooks Robinson. I don't know about you. How about you guys? When I'm fortunate enough to be on vacation, what's that? I like hotels that go up. Yes. I like facilities and places resorts that go up as opposed to you don't like the problem. I don't like going out. Oh, I see what you're doing. When I check in. I like to say, where's my room? There's the elevator. It goes up. High four. I don't like out. I don't like, well, you got to take this thing and then suddenly, I feel like on a saddle, I feel, I need to be close to the lobby. That's all. I don't know what it is. If you're taking a cart somewhere, that seems like you on a resort. I know that. That seems good. I know it sounds weird. I don't like going out. I'm like, going up. You want to be self contained and here's the reason why. I go out. It's one of those Florida is in Orlando, it's going out. You're going out. And it was like a half mile from the lobby, and it's time to be picked up to go to the golf course for the charity tournament. And they tell us the night before at this charity, hey, pick up time is 6 30 in the morning. And I'm like, what time is the shotgun start to say 10 a.m.? And I'm like, what? Are you talking about? Because I'm already overserved. I would have had a different approach to the evening. Sure. Now you tell me, a little late, horse is way out of the barn. Yeah. Okay? A couple glasses of red in it. I mean, not back then. And not back then. I wasn't so refined. He's a caveman. I might have not learned the phrase of what beer and liquor makes you. Pretty Susie. PS. I'm not happy. Okay. I gotta wake up. Wake up. I wake up and I am hungover and the boss to take us to take me to the lobby for the charity tournament that told me it was coming wasn't there yet. Now I'm up, I'm late and I am far away from the lobby. You know, if I was in an elevator, just go downstairs and go, it's time. I have to now, because I went out, I don't like going out. Are we going up? Up and down. So I'm going out. So I call the lobby. From my flip phone, I called, you know, I put the antenna up on my flip phone. And I called a lobby. Don't try to text on that. And I'm like, is there anybody there from the charity golf tournament? And the person at the front desk goes, is there anybody here from the section and such tournament someone goes, I am, get to the phone line, and I'm like, okay, be calm. Calm, relax. I'm like, hey, I'm waiting outside of cabin, whatever. Room, whatever, the bus is supposed to be here. Do you know where the bus is? And they go, it goes, what bus? I'm like, oh gosh. What bust? The bus that I was told that would be here at 6 30, even though the shotgun start is ten,

"The left side of their infield is great for baseball is great for the mets. I'm with you. Like Billy Beane has obviously lived in that one lane wildly successfully for years and years and years. But if we're talking about baseball globally baseball, big picture, the ethos of baseball, what is happening right now in New York is the best thing that possibly could. Make no mistake about it. How much better does gray make the mets in your estimation? Way better. Cool as Correa might be the best shortstop in baseball. He's now playing third base for the mets. The mets have a real chance, a real chance to be an all time great regular season team. Buster, I truly mean that. We saw the Dodgers do it last year, and obviously means nothing in the postseason, but an awful lot went wrong for the mets last year to get to 101 wins, right? They're pitching staff, especially their starting rotation, is going to be considerably better. They have two potential Hall of Fame shortstops on the left side of their infield, which is historically unprecedented. I've come across and I picked up a few names in terms of comparison, but there's not much there. I'm thinking back to Ernie Benson, Ron Santo, Louis aparicio, and Brooks Robinson, Robin yacht and Paul molitor, of course, Jeter and a rod, this is a really, really short list. And let's not forget to mention, buck showalter is a manager who has a decades long, a durable track record of eking out the most value out of his teams. They regularly exceed their run differential in terms of expectation. And not to mention, yes, the national yeast is going to be loaded. But they've changed the schedule. They've balanced the schedule this upcoming season. So you're not playing the brave 19 times. You're playing them 14 times. You're not playing the Phillies 19 times. You're playing them 14 times. I think we're living in a world in which if the mets hit, like if the mets really hit in the way in which people stay healthy. And they can avoid any sort of unforeseen stuff, which has happened to the mets over the years. I don't think winning a 110, a 115 or even a 120 games is off the table. They are absolutely loaded at every position. Their utility guides could make the all star team in Milwaukee or Pittsburgh. They have guys at the back end of the rotation that would be the ace for a third of the teams in the league. They got the best closer in the sport. There's nothing that this team does not have. Nothing at all. And Carlos Correa right now, who knows what his back will look like in 12 years from now. But Carlos Correa right now is going to slide over to third base and effectively be Manny Machado, playing alongside Francisco Lindor. With an outfield that includes Brandon nimmo and starling Marte. This is an all star team. They have two first ballot Hall of Fame pitchers atop the rotation who are still in the back end of their prime. I don't think you can say enough about how good this theme is likely to be. Anything short of the World Series. I think would be an epic collapse. Now, obviously, baseball's postseason is fickle. For this team is good enough to be favored in any series they play for sure. We just spoke with David Ross, who acknowledged that, you know, from the cubs perspective, his perspective, the quickest way to competitive relevance is through improved defense and pitching, how much better does dansby Swanson make the cubs? Considerably. The cubs are going to win more games than they lose. Next season. The cubs are going to jump over the brewers next season. I really like the addition of Dan's response and for them specifically with Jameson tying the new edition with Kyle Hendricks with Marcus stroman. This is a pitching staff that's going to live on the ground. And with dansby Swanson playing shortstop with Niko Horner playing second base, especially now that you've eliminated the ship, up the middle defense is at a premium. And the cubs are going to play it better than any team in baseball. You can make up a lot of ground by being good in that area. It's not just that they have good defenders in the middle of the diamond. It's that they're marrying it with their pitching staff. There's a clear organizational philosophy again there in Chicago. It did not have the previous few seasons, even when the Baez is and the Rizzo's and the Brian's and the Contreras is we're still there. It's sort of became disheveled by the end. It really did. What they have now is a very clear philosophy. We're going to win this way. And the buy in is going to make a huge difference. I think the cubs are going to allow 50 fewer runs than they allowed last year. I think they're probably going to score 50 more runs than they allowed last year because Swanson could hit a little bit. And they got a really nice young collection of hitters in that lineup too. And if you can find a way to get a hundred runs better, you're going to be way better. It just goes without saying. That's going to be that's going to equal something like ten wins. I think they passed the brewers and finished second in the national league central. I think it's going to happen as soon as next season. All right, in light of all the money that's been spent this winter, I want to be in the agent for Rafael Devers because I can't remember the last time a player had this kind of leverage in the way that Deborah's has with the Red Sox ownership, which is under siege, fan base is furious about this. Bets left Bogart's left and here comes Rafael Devers, who's going to be 26 years old at the end of next season, 20 going to turn 27 the Anna next season. And he's going to hit the open market in what is generally speaking besides Shohei Ohtani underneath Shohei Ohtani, a thin market. Oh my God, like the Red Sox either better come in with a white flag and say what is it going to take and that offer needs to start with the number four or I think ambo, like he's gone. What do you think? I think there's a 0% chance that Rafael Devers is a member of the Red Sox in 2024 if they don't sign him before opening day of 2023.

"Thing that stood out to me as far as those awards are concerned. But they go gloves. Again, generally speaking, I think they get most of these right because we have we're so good now and being rooted in the data. But I'm hopelessly biased. JT Realmuto is the best catcher in the national league buster. Jacob stallings had a really nice year. I know his blocking numbers. I think specifically were extraordinary with his past all allowance. And that kind of stuff. But generally speaking for wars like these, I use a player's body of work to be able to sort of break ties because defense can be a little bit noisy year to year and obviously you're not watching them play defense the same way that you're watching them hit and evaluating them as such. And DT real much was the best arm in baseball. He prevents base runners from stealing better than anybody. His framing numbers are always fantastic. Baseball perspective had him third in blocking run. So across the board for my money, he's the best catcher in the national league and I'm sure I was happy for Jacob stallings. The pirates didn't have the chance to win too much this year. So that would say amongst all the words that I went through this morning. Those are the two that stood out. Surprised that Bryant snicker wasn't a finalist for that award. And surprised at JT real Muto did not win the gold glove on the national league. All right, hambo. Always great to talk with you. Later, boys. Get out. Bleacher tweets already buster, bleacher tweets, for a Tuesday, we got Andrew Campbell at real camp drew writing in, hey buster, is it possible that Nolan Arenado has a chance to either tie or surpass Brooks Robinson's gold glove total of 16, Nolan is 30 years old and only needs 7 more gold gloves to tie if he reached 16, would he retire as baseball's greatest defense of third baseman? Andrew, the, you know, I love you. But the word only needs 7 more. Only 7, 9. He is a long way away, and I would say this as we move forward. Brian Hayes is going to be a major factor because his defense is special. Also you wonder Matt Chapman with the Oakland seemingly ready to dumps salaries if they're going to move match Chapman. And if he goes the national league, that's going to change the context for sure. He would be a really nice fit for the mets, for example. Adam Smith is up next at Schmidt FIA writes in with posey's retirement. There's been a lot of chatter in TC markets about mauer's case for the hall. He had an incredible few years, but I don't know if he has longevity or numbers. What are your thoughts? Yep, Hall of Famer, lifetime three or 6 batting average, three batting titles, MVP in 2009, four top ten finishes MVP 6 time all star 2123 career hits, which is 623 more than buster. In his career, 921 games at catchers, 6 O three at first base, posey had more games at catcher in his career, 1093, 229 games at first, but Joe mauer and his time as they catch her was a difference maker. You know, the other day I was texting back and forth with Bruce bochy, and he talked about what an advantage it always was for the Giants that they had an elite offensive player at catcher and the same is true for the twins. Let's go to Brian at a player to be named later, Brian writes in love the show. Can we talk about unicorn Joey Gallo back to back gold glove winner elite feet per second rate and bottom 1% in strikeouts ever seen this combo before? No, not with somebody that big. Well, actually, you know, when Aaron judge is a little bit like that, you know, in terms of his athleticism, but I remember when Joey first came to the big leagues and you see this hulking guys huge. And I was talking with John Daniels, the general manager of the rangers, and he was talking about how like Joey's a much better athlete than anybody realized his boy was he right. Let's go to Don Irvine. What's up, Don? Don writes in, now that Kyle schwarber is a free agent, do you see him signing with an AL team to serve as a DH rather than the NL considering his defensive deficiencies and will he get a multiyear deal considering his 2021 season? Yep, he'll get a multiyear deal, I think there's going to be universal BH for 2022. So he'll consider offers from teams in both leagues. Mister jakey RS at mister JK RS writes in, now that the season is over, what's the feeling on the crackdown over foreign substances after all the grumbling? Do you think it had an impact on the game? Was there a big enough sample size? Yeah, I think there was. It was clear that there were pictures affected by it. You know, spin rates, you could tell that some pictures were affected by it. You know, we had Alex Avila on the podcast and he acknowledged and agreed with what I saw down the stretch that there were a lot of pictures who actually using foreign substances, good old fashioned bullfrog, that sort of thing. I think they found a middle ground. I really hope that they settle this issue because it really is unfair to all of them. As I said during the year when people would talk about someone like a Scherzer or Garrett Cole as a cheater, I'd be like, I mean, 90% of the pictures were using something. And I really would love to get past the conversation. Last one for today, Matt, but covered in confetti at kayaking Smith rates and there's been talk on the pod that Seattle, Texas and Miami may make some splashes this off season. But what teams would be should be worried about setting up to tank next year. I feel like the cubs, guardians nationals and reds are candidates. Congrats on the braves, World Series there mat hope you enjoyed your celebrations. Yeah, absolutely. Look, the guardians don't tank. When we talk about tanking and Taylor sorry to pick a scab for you, I mean, we look at what the Orioles have done a recent years. We looked at what the Astros did in the early 2010s. The last time the Indians lost a hundred games was 1991. The Indians excuse me, the guardians retooled. The athletics retooled. They don't tank. The Orioles, there's absolutely no sign that they're going to veer from their strategy, which means, I'd say right now, whatever the over under is in Vegas, if you want to retire, I think you bet the under on whatever Vegas comes up with your team, what do you think? Oh, yeah, empty account. Bet it all buster bet it all on that under. I'm gonna check that out after we're done. I'm sure it's not up yet, but the second it is, you know where you define me. So thanks for writing everyone. Hashtag bleacher tweets on Twitter. Again, we're gonna do another show. Next Friday, we had a great batch of tweets this week, so keep them coming throughout the week and please follow rate and review this podcast wherever you listen to your podcasts. And just to touch on a couple of other teams real quick, Luis Castillo and Sonny gray, two guys to watch for the reds, I'm curious to see if they trade them. If they do, then you wonder if they're going to be retooling. They have too many good position players to actually go into full on tank. And I think the what to watch for for the cubs, do they make a major expenditure? You know, it was a good sign that they're not tanking that they picked up wade Miley. Before we go, I just want to mention we got sad news yesterday, Pedro Feliciano, longtime left handed pitcher passed away at age 45 and his sleep at word of Perez colleague tweeted out that news, I didn't really know him that well, but everybody that did know him better than I just they were heartbroken yesterday. So our thoughts go out to the family of Pedro Feliciano. My thanks to date to Carl to hambo to Taylor have a great day to everybody. Thanks for listening. Stay safe and remember, Hayden inequality based on skin color is something we need to fight against every single day. Thanks for listening to the baseball tonight podcast. If you're.

If a fielder deliberately touches thrown all with cap mask or any other part of the uniform detached from its proper place on the person of said fielder. that's an equipment violation not catcher's interference or a catcher's balk but that happened recently to and then joe damasio is part of a tie for most walk-off triples all time with three shared with his contemporary second baseman. Connie ryan the record for most walk offs without a walk off. Homer is louis. Ceo who had fourteen walk-off events twelve singles one error and one wild pitch with no walk off homers the record for most walk-ups consisting entirely of homers is eight by ralph kiner so eight walk-ups all homers for recliner and most walk-off straight up is frank robinson with twenty nine but relatively close to the top of the list is recently mentioned. Manny mota who had twenty walks with only one being a homer and jim thome who hit six hundred twelve career homers. He has the record for the most walk off homers with thirteen. So thanks as always to ryan. That's all going back to nineteen sixteen when play by play becomes available. Wow so now. It is time for you to go on vacation vacation..

"But when when guys like nola and bellinger are just not getting done yelich not getting it done for whatever reason i just i can't i can't tell you that. I think it's going to change for the final six weeks. I can't do that anymore. and it. it's absolutely fair. I i might be taken on some real bad stat baggage with sonny gray but you gotta take some chances here and there are a lot of people in that situation and need to make a big push on the standings. I'm gonna take the chance to this. Does narrow let's move on now. We can talk about frank schwinn window. All of the top ten. I the which the contact rate is the driving force there. I told you about how. I tried to make a million for him and got shutdowns going to have a final six weeks than anthony rizzo guy. He replaced no look voight. That's not happening. Why is it not happening. She went sales not exceeding rizzo. Why tell me what you see those rizzo in new. York's is look great. These look great in games yet. Well he's got a shot. Have you seen any ones for the yanks. I've seen it. I'm just. I'm just saying like it's the fifth month of the season and the guy's been doing you know very little all happily put in a line of anthony rizzo versus franks wendell from this point till the end of the year. I happily one. that's not you should. Nine percent of people should know what has no guarantees. I i love. I love the challenge here. Though i mean it's it's it's not an unfair comparison to make but gimme result. Voight voids a different story. Rick void very happy and he has a right to be not happy. What do you like traded is traded for my trotter otani okay. They traded for a guy having a terrible season. And he's going to play over him voice a very good fit with where he landed though. And where this how. This plays out matters. How do you see this playing out. I know my feeling on it. I don't know what you're feeling is on it. Well they're not gonna play standing the why would they they. Should they absolutely should. I don't think they should because they're winning now. And they're winning in part. Because i think they have good outfield defense. And why would you stand out there and risk him getting hurt so to me. It just seems like You know always something bad can happen. You know i. I don't know. I think you gotta maximize your lineup. I think the eggs f- to go for the kill. That's my take. I don't think they have to right now because of beating everybody the way they're doing it you know so i don't know that's gonna play out against tampa but we'll see. Let's get you singing now. Combo meals for it. It's a combo meal. Do combo come boat you do. It's a combo meal. Homebrew plus steel tune for that. One of the tune. Don't i. I think you're doing a great. That's the way it is putting in not for me or kyle. They're tuning in for your singing for the tunes. They don't care about logan web or ya'll they care about you singing. I have to read this then. These players are making moves earlier this week and making moves brought to you by lengthen jobs. Build your winning team today. Go to lincoln dot com slash sports since our last show. There were three combo meals. A homerun steele lewis. Robert of the white sox looks fine to me bradley. Zimmer cleveland actually looks pretty good right now and jonathan. Vr never looks good but he did have a combo meal and they keep playing and they're gonna end up with us. Five hundred records are very interesting. Team their their autoclave. It on the hunting stat guy. Class is not a good baseball player. New bite he can accumulate numbers as a lot of places and he handles the job when you need them. And that's a good thing. It's it's a skill in. Its own right but yeah give him credit. I mean you know. He does what he does and it's not like they have anything better. You know like. I wrote about the other day who radio suarez like. Cincinnati is nothing else. I mean they can play miss stockists there. But they're not gonna sit suarez. They don't they. Don't want us would sit up even though he's making a million outs you know but with vr. I mean you know jd. Davis isn't exactly brooks robinson at the hot corner. So yeah the r. s. fourteen homers and ten steals Three twenty one on base which is about as career mark. he is what he is at this point journeyman. Let's move on now. Talk closers time for you to sing again to deliver to. It's closer carousel on. Since i did this window and got my crazy do you. If i told you that david robertson were to lead the tampa bay rays and saves the final six weeks. Would that be crazy. And it's crazy that i'm saying no. It's absolutely crazy but welcomed. I just had a debate with friends of mine. Last night about the tampa bay bullpen. And how near them heard of any of the pitchers who were pitching for the race. Bullpen right now. All of their name players are either on the injured list or traded other organizations. And yet they're still getting it done. I don't want to be part of them for fantasy to you. I'm not adding robertson. They don't have on their active roster anyone with tampa save this month as my favorite stats. They've and they're going to challenge. Last year's number of different pitchers getting a save. And you know what the dodgers are doing. The same thing for setup man. There's picking people up that everyone else's dumping and saying well let's give it a shot you know and see what happens and yet trying and still has a good number of holes. That's what's amazing to me. So not pure setup man but like six fifty six seventeen guy. They've brought to march. Yeah it's amazing. It's like they're just like playing a different game tampa bay and los angeles. I can do whatever we want. And it's not gonna hurt us and give them a lot of credit for that. I admire what tampa has done with. This pitching seven and i still say it's a travesty. Every year kevin cash doesn't win manager earlier but that's me well it's going to be the old guy in chicago but you know. I don't think he deserves it. I agree with you. I think it should be kevin cash. The fact he's got those narrative it's amazing and they still haven't called up shane. Baz i guess. Wait till september to do it What else are we gonna talk about all right. So yankees chad green I thought that on monday. When i said johnny lasagna gotta say but they got their left closer back so he will get most of the saves although i bet they take it easy on him some degrade left. Yeah the he didn't he didn't look all that great so they yanked him from that and it turned into a save opportunity for lucas lucci. That guy's wrong with them. Something's wrong with chapman. Obviously right i would not trade for right now. We didn't talk any closes in in the buy or sell portion of today's show i would not be trading for him. Listeners have noticed that the yankee bullpen has come up in the closer carousel now on four every second every value different name and not once have i said oh. Yeah chapman's the guy wanted for the rest of the air. There's a reason for that. You're still rising brad. Hand making a mistake. I don't know why trust traded for him because they they needed help okay but they still need help. They shouldn't be using him. He looks terrible. Chebbi ashamed that. I have a league where i've held him because if you lose him he's gone for good. It's an nl. Only and i should let him go. I guess you're assuming he gets saved next season buddies pitching so poorly right now. Who would give him a closing job. Oh i know. And i don't know that i i still question whether he was fit for it at the past off season. There's really no doubt to me now doesn't look good. He's he's had a couple of really ugly games that i've seen here i don't know it's it's some sort of mental thing. Where're when a player. Switches leagues. i have a very hard time letting them go knowing that they are forever vacated from the pool. I it's probably failing of mine..

"Group does a great job covering the Colorado Rockies for the athletic. And Nick. We know that earlier today you were on the zoom call with Nolan. Erin Otto and, uh, I mean, what was your What was your take about how he feels about being back in in Colorado for the first time since this trade You know he didn't. He didn't exactly use the words. But my impression was that he was a little emotional. Um, I thought maybe his voice cracking a little bit here and there. I think there's a lot of feeling Coming back. Um, I you know, he his words were that he gave a lot He gave a lot to this team. And by the time I mean the Rockies and lots of the city, and, uh, you know, it's hard to disagree with that, like he really did. He was their best player for a long time. He's on a Hall of Fame path. Um and then and then on top of it, You know, his exit out wasn't normal. It wasn't just a normal kind of routine trade. You know it left it left like a lot of questions. I think for You know, not not just Not just for fans but also like for his old teammates for him. I think a lot of people are just kind of wondering what it's going to be like, Um You know that now that he's back and I think he's wondering. I think he doesn't exactly know how to feel about it. Well, one thing that we do know is that he's a very talented player. But when you look at the production of McMann Uh, it doesn't feel like we've had a drop off in at least the offensive portion of it. But next let me ask you have we seen a drop off defensively? No, actually defensively, they've done really well between Ryan McMahon and No. One cousin Joshua Fuentes. Uh, They're they're among the better defenders in in the National League at any position. Really, Um, the Rockies have a good defense. It's kind of difficult. German. Sometimes that they This is one of the better defensive internal while In part because in part because they have a good center field during often Gaza, But, um, But, you know, the defensive drop off hasn't been that bad. I mean, you just but again, like you know when you watch the game. Kind of on the regular I mean, we're still talking about. We're talking about a Brooks Robinson level generational defender. You know it or not? Oh, so you're were mean, What we're not seen are the crazy place. We're not seeing, like the crazy tarp catch and the and the blood throws And just like the nuts, the nuttiness that he that he is able to do. We're not seeing that necessarily. And that's okay. Um, you know those those things are sort of extra credit. But the Iraqis are doing really well at their base. Kind of a third base by committee and just, you know, just in routine. Uh, defense. Um The offense, though. If I may say the office has been it a huge drop off. Um, no. If you if you transferred Nolan Arnada statistics this Rockies team he would be I mean, his production is and he's not even at his normal production. It's like three times. Like three times the amount basically. Um as in as in Iraqis hit or even Trevor story, So I mean, it's really the offensive draft has been Not not helpful. Basically this year, Nick, you know we had a chance to catch up with but black on Monday. When the Rockies were kicking off that series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he talked a little bit about how the fact that they they didn't They didn't think it would be as bad as it is. But they did think that the offensive production was going to be, um, not as good as it has been in years past. Do you point to that as his reason? Number one. Why this? This Rockies team is sitting where it is sitting in the N L West. And why can't this team Play on the road when they play as well as they do at home. Yeah. I mean, it's a really good question. It's not. I mean the home road swing for this team. It's just something that they have. I mean. It's never going to change. It's something they have to live with. Um, every Rockies team every year has dealt with it. Um, this team is just Especially ill suited to to figuring it out there just because I mean like bottom line, and then we can talk about How could they are against fastball? How they chased making balls outside his own too much we can we can break it down. But I mean, the bottom line is they're just not very good offensively. I mean, they're just not. There's not enough talent on this roster offensively. And you know, it's not just the Nolan drop off. It really took it. Really, You know, really like started after 2019, but You know, they you know they went from You know, they went from DJ Mayhew's Daniel Murphy, and he did not perform well and then how they went from Daniel Murphy, too. DJ Chrome. They were hoping for a big bomb in free agency. He's not okay. But it's just sort of really all around all around their lineup. It's just not. It's not a great lineup. Um, I mean, there are just There are holes all the way through their roster. Offensively, they don't have enough left handers. They don't they have Nobody You can Who can play, catch your position and hit the ball. Um It's just like kind of up and down, and when you piece it all together like that's when we see That's when we see them crazy swings When you go from home to road, you know, the key to hitting for Iraqis team is you just You just have to be more disciplined than any other team. When you're hitting on the road, you have to be able to hit the fastball. And you have to make the adjustment to recognizing what a breaking ball looks like. When you leave high elevation, and they're just because they're just sort of like Not capable of those things on a basic level very well then, and it just compounds itself when they go on the road, So I mean, there's just I mean, we're really talking about a rebuilding team..

Ryan McMahon Joshua Fuentes Erin Otto Pittsburgh Pirates Nolan Colorado Nick Nolan Arnada McMann Daniel Murphy Monday Brooks Robinson this year Trevor DJ Chrome first time Rockies National League three times Colorado Rockies

"It's just and and it's also your your game plan. Against specific heaters hitters, right? I mean, I feel like maybe that maybe I'm wrong about this. Um, but I can't tell how many times I've seen pictures this season take off their hat. And look at a game plan. You know what I saw the other day in the college were in the Super Regional. Maybe maybe was this morning. Um, a picture was wearing like a by the way if I wouldn't even let the picture where even though it was on his, Yeah. One of those football armbands. Yes, and he's looking at. He's got a game plan. He's looking at what each hitter's susceptible. That's right. It's right. You see any in major league baseball all the time. You see the picture, pull up his cap, and he just takes a look. You know, And so it's not even. I mean, it's so specific these days. It used to be. You gotta study. You gotta study the game plan. You got to know exactly how to attack attack each hitter. That's why you have conversations with the catcher Come out like you got this little bit wrong. Remember, we, Ted about this guy? You got to do this. This and this and this this? Oh, yeah. Yeah. OK, got pregnant Now they've limited catchers visit. So now they have it in their hat. I mean, it's just that's right. It matters. Your visits, right. It's a lot of different things. It's not necessarily the tack ified substances which we know have been around for a long time. Pitch counts, which means you're facing, you know, in any given night 345 pitchers. Yeah, so meaning if you're a star player, there's an overwhelming chance. You're not facing that guy more than twice exactly right. And the next guy who comes out very well might be like if you're a lefty, probably a lefty who's throwing 97 or writing with just filthy stuff, I guess. There are a million I could construct a never ending list of reasons why The averages are down and you just hit on a bunch of something else that I don't think it's brought up enough. These fielders today are unbeliever their elite. They're super athletes. Yeah, I mean and listen. When we were growing up, you had guys like Ozzie Smith and Johnny bench behind the dish. And Mattingly, who is my idol? Keep Hernandez at first. Great. Jo Morgan was great. May he rest in peace, and Brooks Robinson was before time of Brooks and Nettles and Mike Schmidt at third base and all these amazing outfielders, right? But I mean, I feel like every guy on the day I see plays every night. And this is a guy who played me a lot of baseball. I'm like Couldn't make that play. If my life depended on it, I would have no chance. Yeah, like It is really it's a testament to the athleticism to your point. Everybody has an arm, everybody in the infield. Everybody gets the balls that they never used to get to. So there's a million reasons why, and I'll leave you with this to remember when I don't know the year I feel like it was probably a while ago now. Guess it's not really that important. I would guess it's probably 10 years about to give you guess. Remember when the P G A They changed their rules. Like with the grooves of the club. I do. Yeah. Yes, I do. Okay. And it was all about. You know, I can't. I mean, sometimes I'll hit a ball and it will check, but I don't know how to do it. I don't know. You know how to do it? No idea. Like I can't say I'm going to get this thing to hop twice. Never. If it happens. I'm like, Well, you see that? I don't know. But they changed the groove rule right? Because if you give a pro an instrument that is far more advantageous than it ever was, they're going to do superhuman things because they're already pros. Yes, all right. So now forget about the group's take it to the composition of the modern, the baseball we we use. Now the seams are raised. Yeah, so it's it's like a correlation the grooves for the chipper on the tour. The short game. Alright, Proficiency versus raised grooves. All the baseball scene to a picture. Yeah, I mean that baseball is it feels like it's a part of their hand. That's right. You don't think they're gonna make it dance? More? Yeah, of course they course they will. And by the way, I was having this conversation with a friend of mine today. Why what other sport manipulates? The ball more than baseball. No. Your NFL doesn't change the football, right? The you know the PS size, but no, no, no. Yeah. Oh, you mean the actual the way it's construct? Yes, yes, Hockey doesn't change the puck. NBA doesn't change the basketball right Football certainly doesn't what other sport does this as much as baseball does. They've messed around the golf ball over years. The tennis ball. I'm sure he's got four bounce here. But no, I I get you but golf. I understand because you almost have to do with golf. Because there's no more There's not land. You can't like change. You know the structure of the golf course. Like you just got to try to limit to how far these guys are hitting it, So I get it in golf. Right guys are you know some of these guys are hitting 3 80 some of these holes off the team. We watch him every week on CBS and invariably, and I just sit there with my mouth open and very jealous. Flying with that red arrow, You know, 101, 5200 and 30 like I'm like, all right, 3 37, and then it stops that it starts rolling. That's right. That's right. That's gracious, like I don't know how they do it, but I think it is so unfair to Jacob, the ground who's given up I think it's four earned runs this year. Four. Now he's missed a couple starts. You got hurt. He is You know, you know, I love me some Garrett cold and, you know, Met fans always get off her tweet. I put out I guess a year and a half or so ago. Jacob. The dramas is by far the best pitcher in baseball and to reiterate what I've said many times on the show. I've never seen a picture better in my life. I have never seen the picture. That Effortlessly seemingly so in control and so dominant every single time they take the mound. Yeah. Little snippets of Dwight Gooden. You know, I didn't see Steve Carl until he's a little bit old. They're saying What Nolan Ryan? I mean, there's been some Pedro. Is the one that comes closest for me and I guess to an extent, Clemens, but Pedro's because of the change up the change ups the great equalizer, but These guys have no chance to hit Jacob deGrom. "Steve sparks joins us here on. The sean sows ratio on sports. Talk seven hundred steve. Now i won't get you for dollar we. What is wrong. A dollar is that sheep at buck is all it is to bar at this woke up. Oh we'll do it means. She probably looked at you and said no. I won't kiss you for dollar that come on. You're fired up this morning. Let me let me start here and steve. I'll do it for a dollar if that's what it takes. Hell we even. If you wanna pay me more. I'll do that too. We get fraudulent boxing matches. Hell if you wanna pay me fifty bucks. I'll do it you don't have to. I'll be there. I love the. I love the way you call a game dude. Of course i got for a buck the good morning by the way. How good can garcia be. Wow he's about as good as anybody in the league right now. Last five starts in the ira about one point eight. He's getting deepening. The ballgames beaten good teams. It's not like he's he's pitching against these base flukes And over and over and over again he's a show in a lot of people who are making decisions I don't want to come out of the the rotation might be better in the long run with tim in the bullpen. But man wha- what a great job with this roster obviously ver- landers you know not there so about with the current and what you're looking at. Gimme your dream starting five. Let's say health is going to go great all year long. Give me. Who's who's who's your starting pitching this year the rest of the year in in order ranking mccullers Or katie yes. We go after that. It's tough from you. Know what fromberg number two mccullers three dinner key and then like. If you're talking about going into the playoffs you're bumping a couple of guys out anyway and just because of the way it's gone i think garcia probably going to have to go to the bullpen and the coin. Flip is whether or not ota ready of turns into what he was when he was an all star a couple of years ago. Would you take that steve. I mean right now. If you have the choice garcia would have to be the pickle road rizzi right have to be correct. Yeah yeah okay. So so are we more concerned that busy wouldn't be good out of the bullpen. That garcia would. I mean if we came right down to nut cut in time. Who would who would you choose knowing what she known today. That came better. Sean where Putting rizzi in the bullpen and never using partly right or putting garcia out there using quite a bit one is e and hope hope that odor is he gets you to five or six innings every every second start right for what is the did he goes back to his all star days rowdy right right no question. It's a hell of a point steve. Sparks joins us here. Let me just overall steve. The toronto series in buffalo and plan that well. What was your overall. I mean i know you always get glaring stuff that sticks out at you because you see stuff we don't would you take away from the series defense matters a lot you know. The astros play phenomenal. Defense in toronto played brutal defense. And that's why the astros won. The series in the astros are sneaky. Really good defensive team. I not only their positioning but doing the right thing over and over and over again. Pays off steve. Why don't we talk about defenses as much in baseball. I don't know we should know why. Why don't we as you know guy boots that we talked about you know on the offensive side of base writing air but the runs that this defense can save in great defenses of the past. That win. I know we've always used that. Oh football defense wins championships. I don't know if that's the case anymore and in the nba. But you better be good a couple of stops the right time in the nba. But you know when it comes to what we just brush by it right. Oh it's home runs. It's all these statistics and analytics. But you bring up a great. I would never thought going into this even as stellar say. Played your first answer. Just because the way we talk about baseball now would've said defense coming out of this series and it will matter when all forget the pitching part the defense behind him when we crowd a champion. That team's going to be pretty good defense. No matter who it is right steve. Yeah it's amazing you know go back to the world series and the postseason runs and just about every year for the last five years. At least i know. I feel like the team that played the best defense won the world series and they just kept going over and over is making big plays and making all the regular play. But it's amazing. How much momentum. A great defensive play gives your offense in a in a really close game so I think it matters a lot. The ashes take pride in it. I know just just from many conversations and by the way they play the game then last year notwithstanding because last year thought the astros defense was brutal during the regular season and they were two games under hundred but guys standing around and between innings they look lifeless But you know as we all know that they turned it on in the playoffs and they play defense and korea korea tops the list when you look at defensive players the captain in the middle of the field and pointing guys in a direction where everybody's alert all the time because carlos correa so intense on defense right before i get to create. I'm so glad. Because i had some stuff i wanted to discuss about him. steve back to this defense thing and we talk about moment them in what it does. You know a great stop in basketball defense. A great hit in football. You're so right about the home. Run changed it but there's something that it's almost like when you walk a guy. Steve inevitably ends up being a big inning. Right you've lost off batter you walk. It's so weird and ask james. Click about this about two or three weeks when a guy gets a single. We're we're not as bummed. A guy gets basit when the leadoff hitter walks. It seems like the inning just goes to hell in a handbasket right. And it's the same defensively. Make that one play all of a sudden the dude to struggling at the plate if he made the play homers a double. And all the thing. It's rolling so It is fast. I guess if we looked into the analytics over the course of time the defense would continue to play a big part in who's crowned champion and at least giving you a chance in the end to win. Not just with pitching. But with the way that carlos correa or a brooks robinson makes a play in the infield. You look at the way. The tension builds a in an inning. A run around first and second or first and third in a high ball game and the way it just builds and builds and builds and builds. And here's the other person i wanna. I wanna talk about the one that everybody in the entire field is looking at is the catcher. Everybody up airing right at him. And if you've got a dog back there who can't block a ball and let's get to the backstop looks like he's frustrated with the pitcher because you can't throw strikes and everybody else kind of follow suit but if you got a guide back there busting his rear end and you have first and third and guy makes a big strike out. And he's got this going back to the dugout that's momentum to miss in maldonado's fantastic at that. He knew mitchell the game too. Yeah and you mentioned a dog steve. The dog in a bad way but maldonado's that dog and a good way you need about five or six dogs football field that just you know. They don't just bark but they bite. You're right you so good at it. And it's an awesome pointed starts there because everybody's staring as you said i want to get i want you to and i want you to dig deep for me on this. Why would you pay and tell me. If you're the general manager. Why would you pay him. Three hundred million dollars.

"You build up to it here. Dave Nolan Aaron Otto traded to the Cardinals getting applause or something. Dave. What's the What's the What's the payoff here? We're gonna build up. We're still we're still rampant their radio thing, But you can tell that was not playing. David started hitting a drum rolls and Chris is going. What are you doing with this? Yeah, it started with no winner Renato of the Colorado Rockies getting moved to the ST Louis Cardinals, which for Giants fans, you're like, Damn, That's not a bad man. The Cardinals when they plucked Paul Goldschmidt a couple of years ago from the Arizona Diamondbacks, another pulling the best third baseman in baseball. Yeah, I'm saying it. Matt Chapman is right there, probably and if it comes to gloves That's happened is personally I probably given the edge over Nolan Aaron. I know and no one. They're not home. I tell you that match. Chapman of the A's is the better third baseman. However, as an all around player, the guy was gonna drive in 130 runs over here and Have 35 home runs. Does it shock you to know that no one ever not already has more gold gloves and Scott Rolen got rolling six for his career. We looked at him like he was the the next coming of Brooks Robinson. You don't mean that third base and here's Aaron. Ah built dude taking balls from his knees like 15 ft into foul territory. Anyway, I thought that was kind of good news. I was like, Damn, this is this is big for the Giants. One of the big bats. One of the all time giant killers now out of the division would have to worry about him anymore. Timlin sickened by the way, somewhere, looking around going like man, Goldschmidt and error. In auto out of this division. Like what? Away that now, If the Giants could only get Wil Myers out of the NL West will be in, we'll be in pretty good shape, but he's hanging around, at least for now, with the slam, Diego Padres. Then we get to Saturday and this was the one that kind of rocked the weekend, I think and mostly because 40 Niner fans, we were all dialed into this thing, And this is what sort of crack me up over the last week is we get a lot of I'm not trying to hammer anybody. Everybody's trying to find their outlet, everybody trying to find their platform. But there were a lot of reports from from We'll call them. Blog's will call them like we can call it 49 or Twitter. If you want to call it that it's just kind of that zone where there were quote reports that the 40 Niners were finalizing a deal. None of the major 40 Niner beat writers have this Cam Newton where Cam Inman wasn't reporting this Matt Miyoko was not reporting this. Jennifer Lee Chan was not reporting this basically, none of the 40 Niners beat writers were reporting that it was a done deal. And as you can imagine, or I think, as we know now, there were gonna be a ton of teams in on matched effort. That Stafford was going to be the quarterback that more teams were in on them to Shawn Watson because he was probably more attainable. And if you look at what the Detroit Lions were able to get for Matt Stafford, I think a lot of people would say, Boy, the Lions may have won that trade. It was Ah Hall based on the number of first rounders they got. They got a third rounder. This year. They got a first rounder next year and the first rounder in 2023 from the lion from the Rams in exchange as well as Jared Goff in exchange. For Matt Stafford. So if you're if you've been under a rock for the last couple of days matched effort now in L. A ram, which sends kind of ripples and reverberations around the league. We knew how many teams were in on quarterbacks this year. If you're a 40 Niner fan, and you're looking at the quarterback situation, you've now got to beg the question. Value versus what you have in house, right? Would you have rather given up the amount of equity and draft capital That the Rams did to get a guy like matched effort. Now, the counter to that is that the Rams the other questions are the Rams closer to competing yet again, then the 40 Niners Rams. We're just in the playoffs. The Rams have the number one defense in the NFL this year in four seasons of Sean McVeigh. It's a three playoff berths. One time they were the number one seed in the NFC West they made were it were the two. We have to go back and check that season shot McVeigh's first year remember, they had the bye week. That was Jimmy's first year. That was all part of the five game win streak at the end of that season, where The Rams come to town. They end up sitting all their players week. 17 Jimmy beats the Rams. They end up getting their bye week, and then they get rolled out of the first round. It was the two weeks off the rest versus rust. So the question now is, And maybe it's a philosophical thing between the 40, Niners and the Rams. And it's true. The Rams have been one of the more volatile or liberal with their their draft picks and their money spending since John McVeigh showed up, then maybe any team in football. Check this out. The Rams now after moving their draft picks this year and next year, and the year after the as of right now have not used a first round draft pick that belonged to them since 2016. It was the year they drafted Jared Goff number 1 2016 before Sean Shopping Day as a head coach. The Rams has never made a selection in the first round of the NFL draft, and that crazy and he's coached a Super Bowl. And he's been to the playoffs three times, and he's got the number one defense in the league. It's crazy stuff. So the other part of this is there a team that every year because of the amount of money they spend because of their philosophy on bringing in these sort of high priced veteran proven players. They went. They got Jalen Ramsey they went in. They got in Dominican Sue a couple years ago. Remember, they went, they actively sought out. Brandon cooks through him on their roster and you keep thinking. How do they keep adding these players? They've got so much money allocated to Aaron, Donald and Jalen Ramsey and actually after they signed Jared Goff. To that extension a couple years ago. You're going, boy. They're gonna be committed to this guy for $140 million. Which begs the question this offseason. Why would you move Jared Goff. If you just pay him or why would you pager and golf and then look to turn around and move him. And I think the answer to that is it's just sort of the nature of doing business with the quarterback in today's game in 2020 and 2021 after they go to a Super Bowl a couple years ago, you can't allow Jared Goff to just walk away. You can't say that's it. He's gone because we didn't win the bull. You've got to make sure you've got somebody under contract because one of the worst situations in football to be in is to roll into a season or an off season with a quarterback who would have done you better than anybody who's out there on the free agent market. Have a trade market this offseason is obviously different, and you start to wonder about like I was shocked to hear that the Carolina Panthers We're in.

"All rights are reacting to the massive breaking news. Perkin Rosenthal, of course, covers MLB for The athletic cardinals have agreed to acquire Nolan are Renato from the Rockies. And the deal, of course, is pending approval. He also tweeted out recently that it will be unlikely to be official tonight. And maybe even not this weekend are about a will need to formally waive his no trade clause and this opt out after 2021. That also has to be addressed. So he says, approved from L B and the union is also necessary so that a massive deal on according to Ken Rosenthal, the Rockies look like they'll be sending 50 million in the process, so they're losing their cornerstone. Arguably one of the best third baseman of all time. They're also sending 50 million and they're getting back in what is being sort of an expected trade. We don't know the official names just yet because it can roll the Rosenthal throughout a few names, and they have a combined, I guess. 100 wife 25 innings worth of actual playtime. Austin Garber's the guy that's actually played the most of this group. He's a lefty Lucan Baker for Spacemen outfielder John Tourists. Hey, said he could include righty Jake Woodford and writing Angel Run, Don't But right now that Z kind of what this is sort of shaping up, and none of these prospects, by the way, are in the cardinal's top 10. Of their farm system. Yes, this is absurd. You basically traded If this holds you basically traded again the best third basement to play the game all around third baseman to play the game. Since Brooks Robinson and you pay them $50 million to stay in the National League and get back to guys who have 120 combined innings of major league experience and no top 10 prospects from an organization that's pretty rough. That's about as bad as it gets. But again he had the 2021. He had a chance to walk away from everything the Rockies get nothing, so I think in their mind It's a desperation move. They were thinking to themselves and look at me were found a month out from this thing starting up, so they're probably the mindset. I'm not. I'm not defending him. Probably the mindset that if they don't do something, now they get nothing in return. So you leak some of the talks on this and get other teams to the table. The massive contract and tell me you think the only team that's interested is the Cardinal's nowhere. Renato in his prime, of course not. I just man and they kept him in the National League. People say I don't criticize anybody. So listen up. They got embarrassed on this one. This is worse than this is worse than the Texans and Nuke Hopkins. Significantly worse. Yeah, We're getting a lot of Bill O'Brien, Texas. Our Texas like this is a joke. It's embarrassingly bad. A lot of people are like that. What did Bill O'Brien as he managing the Rockies from Jared? It's good. Yeah, they're, uh, This is a tough one for Rockies fans around. No, no questions is a tough one. All right, we'll take a step side of that coverage. But of course you could hit us up on the Texas side with reaction will get back to it in a little bit 56690, But we head out to the hotline and bring on Broncos offensive tackle Calvin Anderson joining us here on Broncos country tonight, Calvin, You're always right. Edwards and Benjamin. All right. Thanks for holding on, man. How are you? Ryan. Ben, I'm doing good man. A lot of Broncos country have to be on here talking to you guys. Yeah, we're thrilled to talk to you. You know, one of things that I hadn't had a chance to ask you. And of course we If we had locker room access this year would have been one of the first questions I would have is what happened The morning of that Carolina Panthers game. What went through your head when they hit you up and said, Okay, by the way. You're starting left tackle because there is a difference. There's a difference of prepping all week for the possibility and then legitimately finding out that morning. You're playing what happened there. Yeah, It's crazy. The amount of times I've been asked this question. And you guys imagine that the person who actually told me that was gonna be playing was Mike Munchak. So one of the most calm and still the guys I know. And he calls me the morning of probably With his mind racing obviously about it, not anticipating he was gonna wake up toe learn this left tackle is gonna be out. So he calls me about 30 minutes before we head to the stadium on the bus is that Hey, Calvin, Um Did you hear the news? Because me and Gary are pretty close. So he was kind of out of, um, take care was gonna be out because he was sick. So I hadn't heard anything yet. So he I was like, no coach. I would have no idea what you're talking about. Like Well, you're gonna be starting today. I mean, the mean. Luckily, Coach prepares assaults where, Um, In any moment, you guys you know, slide and all these guys like at any moment. If we do have to play, he's he's fully confident in us. But there is still like a probably an hour and a half period of shock. Where I really was not, um not understanding how real the moment Woz and I think once I got to the stadium, I kind of took it in and understood that. Hey, This just went from, you know What my normal role is every week, Tonto giving this a chance to win my starting at left tackle. Now they're bulls was a little upset because he wanted to play. You know, he went to play in this but at the same time like he was your biggest cheerleader, didn't you? Didn't you reside with parables and his family for a little while? Yeah, me and get it actually live together this season. It was a decision we made early in camp because of because of the uncertainty of the season would covet. And then it just kind of stuck. And, you know, I had a good relationship with Natalie and the kids, and it worked out perfectly. So Yeah, I get Even though he was so upset that he didn't play..

"Look forward to getting you back on the show here very soon. Thank you. AB rejection Does, Doctor all right? Jerry Bailey? Okay? Yes. So the massive breaking news that came down and during that segment, the Cardinals, according to Ken Rosenthal, Have agreed to acquire Nolan or not, oh from the Rockies, pending approval from both MLB in the players Union Rocky sending Cardinals significant cash believed in the 50 million range, and Nolan are not a will be deferring money, and Rosenthal's also turned out some names. These are all prospects. They're not starters at least right now left the Austin Garber. Spaceman Lucan Baker, outfielder Yon Taurus one, probably John tourists, and then my guess, he says, also might include righty Jake Woodford or Angel Run, Doan. So, Yeah. There you go. The end of the era of Nolan are not Oh, here in Denver with the Colorado Rockies. Embarrassing you send in $50 million to another team to take the best third baseman in baseball since Brooks Robinson. Just because you couldn't get that situation, right? You couldn't get that situation embarrassing. It is an embarrassment. This stuff was a tough decision. We suffer fans, but I mean from a from a from an organizational standpoint, that is an embarrassment. Hey, you're paying a contender 50 million To take a future Hall of Fame and I'm not kidding. It is the best third baseman says Brooks. Robinson played the game. You're paying for that for that, and prospects get out of here. Embarrassing. Let's talk then. I mean, I I can understand from The fan's perspective on where this is going toe land with him because he's an all timer. He's a Hall of Famer. At least right now, like you probably just say that that's it's already done. There's been arguments about whether he's the best third baseman ever play the game. And he's a cornerstone kind of player. Certainly I understand from the business side of things, they they lose control after this year, so that is was a real possibility that he walks and you get nothing. And so maybe for the Rockies at this point, they were felt like they were backed into a corner. But the problem is and and this was, you know, kind of Elevated last year during the walk up to the season, the back and forth in the media between Jeff Bride Itch and Nolan are not. Oh, And it got ugly there for a bit. So I think for Rockies fans, they're gonna kind of look at this and say. Jeff Pride is more less ran the cornerstone player out of town and I could see why they'd be a little frustrated. But what you said they're gonna lose cut. They were gonna lose control. After this year. He was likely gonna be gone. And they were going to get any kind of compensation. This was a we have to do something, or else we get nothing for this player kind of move, and I'm not going to defend or whatever. I'm just gonna say from an organizational standpoint, it's a bad spot to be in. You put yourself in a bad spot. You had to get the best you could get in. This sounded like it was Still to pay $50 million to get rid of him, though that's that's gonna be one that that Rockies fans are gonna have a hard time with this is this is like this is like, Okay, let's let's let's put this in NFL terms, all right. This is like the Shawn Watson right now and this situation. Accepted. The Texans don't get draft picks back for him. All right. They traded to the Jets for Sam Donald and like a couple of other, you know, guys that their backup lineman Backup linebackers, backup corners and they pay the Jets $50.

What responsibilities to Jack have with the radio station? He had Uh, Contract obligations. He would handle contracts. He was Involved in in a big town. We did. The big 10 is we're doing now We always had a piece of the big town. And Jack really had his finger in many pies around the station. Because Everyone knew him. And respected him. And there's a lot of deals that were made. Uh, you know, maybe they weren't to formalize deals that we know today. With the battery of lawyers and all that involved. A lot of things were done just on On a handshake. And this file it for years, years and years here. Didn't he actually reached an agreement for the I believe it was the Bulls broadcast rights. And actually signed a deal on a cocktail napkin. The cocktail napkin had its correct That's a long time ago. Your memories very good. They don't do deals that way anymore. They don't do deals that way anymore, and the Uh, you know that everything is is changed and there was a time you know is I inherited a lot of these contract deals and all that. I would call up a school like kind of on a big 10 game of the week. Come on money and say we like to come in there and fairly He always got a sinner. Because we kept our word and we paid our rights and we we did it. But then it's time one of our own. You had to have contracts. How is Jack Abel? Yeah. Do they do a Cubs game in the afternoon? And he would Go over. Do it. Tell a radio sports cast in the evening and WGN radio. Show up on the W G M TV news and then turn around and do that that 10 55 sports special on WGN radio, all in the span of what less than 12 hours and thought nothing of We used to tell people all of us that we work, days nights, holidays and weekends. Never looked at the clock. As far as what time you're going home type of deal. Ah, never worried about Ah Ah, how much vacation time we got? We were so enamored. To be part of this company. And and to do what we were doing, and we ice we We used to talk among ourselves and and and and we would speculate that most other men in particular Wished they were where we were at that point, so we didn't Yeah, Jack that around, and I mean, a lot of times that calls were close, and I remember All the years we were doing, especially when you got into August and September. And we had Uh, the Bears were starting and we had two preseason games and you had the Cubs going or you had two socks going on an out of town game. And then you had the big 10 season was starting and it was. Ah, It was a wild time, but ah, somehow we survived All that, and Uh, I can say with pardonable pride to speaking of Jack that I remember well, the day that he came to me and said he had just gotten a call from New York that he'd been Already ended up Hall of Fame. Cooper's term. And he said. You've done Everything from me over the years. He said. Christ you one more big favor. And I said it clerks, he said. Did you write my speech? And I said I'd be an honor. Right. True speech Tech. So I took two or three days. And came back to him in his office one day and I said Why don't you sit down? Let me read you your speech. His eye invasion. I said, for starters. You only take three minutes. He said three minutes. Are you kidding it? Cooperstown? I said Jack. Better people there today. You know Brooks Robinson, one marry shell while the Rosens family may rest in peace was gone already. I said those people. Will stand up in that hot sun. For an hour. Thanking everyone in creation who've gotten to this point. If you do that. You'll be here for three days in Cooperstown. I said, I have one line that covers that. I said the line is Countless people. It brought me to this pinnacle. You know who you are? And you have my undying gratitude. He said. Boy, That's great. So in any case, he sits down. I read him to speak. And I had You know, I started out with I feel the day I command 60 ft six inches tall, which is the distance from the band of home plate, and he really liked that. And I had the line and era but Uh, in my dreams In the fantasy of my dreams, I have imagined that I would one day broadcast and all Chicago world Syriza's Cubs against the Sox. Syriza would go seven games with the seventh game going in the extra innings. And then being suspended because of darkness at Wrigley Field, and I had the line the planes, the trains, the calves of Busses. Carried me millions of miles through the years to get me where I most wanted to bay. The ball game. Said there were those who said that even if I never got to Cooperstown My suitcase probably would. And fortunately, we've arrived together now. The thing Alex. Remember Dave Is it when that speech was over? And we were all sitting there. And what King can't give a speech. He comes off that platform. And some of those old time writers came up and slapped him on the back and said. Number Dick Young and some of those people from New York had that may be the best single speech ever delivered A Cooper, Stan and Jack said, Go tell Jack Rosenberg because he's the one who wrote it. Now how many people will you get that would do that? And you see all these years have gone by Jack has gone me rest in peace. But I still remember And I told that story countless times. And so he was really unique, unique person and let me in so many ways. We're speaking with Jack Rosenberg, longtime sports editor of WGN. I'm David. It Talk about some of the others. Vince Lloyd, another protege of Jack Brickhouse, and and another guy who for years was known as the voice of the Cubs, but also held A number of jobs around here, then ploy was Uh, like check had Tremendous set of pipes.
