Fresh update on "brooklyn nets" discussed on WFAN Sports Radio_FM Show
"Here in Beautiful New York City. Sitting on top of the 10th floor, 3 45 hunts in ST Welcome to what is another day. Another Tuesday edition of the Zach Killed Show coast to coast across all of a great local CBS Sports radio affiliate, Sirius, XM Channel 206 and The Odyssey at 855 to 1 to four CBS the number to jump on in 855 to 1 to 42 27. You could always get at me on the good old cess pool of Twitter at Zach Gelb. Instagram, too. You know the account at Z A C H g L B or you can follow us on our network's account at CBS Sports Radio, The Kwamie Brown of Food Ryan Traci Key That could be his new title. His new name. He has produced this extravaganza and riding shotgun with me all the way up until 10 p.m. Eastern seven, Pacific. Mike, You're Del Lakers sideline reporter Gonna join us in about an hour 20 from now you do have to playing games tonight. We'll know who's going to be the seven seed in the Eastern Conference by the end of this evening, as you do have the Wizards and the Celtics at nine p.m. Eastern before that. Coming up in about a half hour. Who do we have a doozy? This playing game? Oh, it's great. I gotta have it. Oh, it's sensational. Just cause it's sports. I got to tell you, it's great. Unless of your Hornets, fan or Pacers fan or you have money on the game. Does anyone give a rat's ass about Hornets and Pacers tonight? If you're in Indiana, right now, you want to go to the game 20 bucks. Get a nosebleed seat right now. 20 Bucks. For a 9 10 game winner gets to live another day and then go up against the loser of the Wizards in the Celtics, at least the Wizards and the Celtics gives you a little intrigue. If I'm being fair and honest here, the only game I really care about is tomorrow and that's one out of these four playing games in the first four that you'll see 78 on both sides. And 9 10 on both sides, And that's the Lakers and the Golden State Warriors because of LeBron James and Steph Curry. Wizards and Celtics. Here's a actually want to see happen tonight. I want to see the Celtics loose. And I do think the Celtics are gonna lose. I think the Celtics have been a disaster this year. They have been the most disappointing team in the NBA this season. And I don't even think it's debatable. That was the team that was legitimately supposed to be a top three at worst. Top four team and the Eastern Conference. And now they're the seven seed, and if they win tonight, they'll remain as a 17. If they lose, then their season really could be on the line. And even if they do in then there would be the eighth seed going up against the Philadelphia 76 years. I'll tell you why I want to see Boston lose. It has nothing to do against Boston or nothing with Boston, and I don't know where their level of effort will be. You'll find out not that anything's that drastically changed your opinion about the Celtics. It would be very fitting, though. Tonight with Jalen Brown now done for the season. We all know Tatum is such a special player. That team I would imagine, has already checked out. So will they have any pride? Will they have any guts tonight and beat the Wizards team of Bradley Beal and also Russell Westbrook or will they continue to just disappoint you over and over and over again, and we'll find out at nine. P.m. Eastern Here's why I want to see the Wizards win, though. Because usually to seven 18 It's not an intriguing matchup. Yeah, you've had a few times the eight seed take down the one seed. I totally get that when you have matchups like that, though you usually expect right. The one seed to be t eight. And the two to beat the seven. So you look at what Star player can I get that will have a connection or that will have a story line going up against The other team that they're they're playing with. And if you look last year, for example, I've really wanted to see Not that I ever thought. Okay. See had a shot to beat Houston and, ironically, that ended up going to a seven game and Okay, See, you should have never been the Syriza almost won the series. If it wasn't for that James Harden block. I wanted to see though Rockets go up against okay. See last year because of the fact That you had Russell Westbrook on the Rockets at the time. And then Chris Paul had the ugly departure where he's supposed to playing cards on the plane with James Harden. They're not even speaking. So I wanted to see that because of just some of the rivalry and because of the fact that both those players were on the other team at the time the season prior So if you go and you look at the wizard's not that there is a rich tradition between the Nets and the weight of wizards, But if you look individually, I think it would be cool to see Russell Westbrook. In a playoff series going up against Kevin Durant. And James Harden, and that's what you would get if the Wizards win tonight, take down the Celtics, and they become the seven seed and go up against the Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics win. What's the real story line? All right. Brad Stevens got the seven seed. We know Brad Stevens isn't going to get fired. Nor should he. Danny Ainge. I don't think is going to get fired if they lose these next two games, though. Don't believe that Brad Stevens is going anywhere. I wonder if that will be enough to push the ball across the pylon. Let's just say to get Danny Ainge out in Boston. That's something to pay attention to if Boston wins, though, Is there a big, juicy storyline with Jason Tatum and knows and embarrassment this year? Is there anything that makes us say, Wow, you got nets and Celtics other than all its Boston, New York, Let's be cheesy. Now. Now. But the Celtics to lose You. Have you put them up against the bucks? All righty. You know that. That's a little bit fun, but once again I don't see any way or you put him up against the six years I should say, And there's some history there because a few years ago six years in the Celtics didn't meet in the postseason. And Al Horford, who was used to be on the Celtics and the six years at the time he was at the Celtics. He did a nice job on Joel Embiid being and beats kryptonite down the stretch in that game five That was actually the Syriza if you recall trace Where they fired off the confetti in Philadelphia, thinking they won the game, and then they had to pick up all the confetti and the six years ended up losing. That was the confetti game at the Wells Fargo Center. I'll never forget that That's what I would like to say. I have no interest other than will mellow ball. I have no interest and the Hornets making the playoffs. I have no interest in the Pacers making the playoffs. Would be fine. If you get the Wizards win. Tonight. They go up against the Nets, and then I guess you could sell me a little bit on Celtics and six years for the most part, though. I think I'm on an island here, and I get it because it's quote unquote playoff basketball. So we always have to When you're on the radio all we're so excited. Oh, it's playoff basketball. Do you feel the energy? Let me be the hype, man. Are you serious? It's Showtime, baby. Here we go as they start to sound like Dickie V for second. What is moving the needle for you tonight with Hornets and Pacers? Nothing. Wizards and Celtics. Yeah, Okay. You got Jason Tatum? You've got Russell Westbrook. You've got Bradley Bill. If I'm not a fan of the wizard's I'm not fan of the Celtics or if it's not my job to watch that game..
Curry hits 10 3s, scores 49 in Warriors' win in Philly
"Steph curry nailed ten three pointers and scored forty nine points to extend his sibling stretch leading the warriors to a one oh seven ninety six victory at Philadelphia his three to tie the game at eighty six all give him eleven straight games with at least thirty points topping Kobe Bryant for the most by any player thirty three or older Jo Ellan beat score twenty eight for the seventy Sixers who now with the Eastern Conference by one game over the idol Brooklyn nets the Sixers were without Ben Simmons to the onus and Tobias Harris because of a sore knee I'm Dave very
NBA Ready for Impact of Chauvin Verdict
"And the nba now has instructed teams to be vigilant about the impact of potential verdict on the possibility of game postponements. The minnesota timberwolves in brooklyn nets postponed a game last week after the police shooting of an unarmed black man dante right during a traffic stop in brooklyn center minnesota the nba wnba postponed full slate of playoff games. You may remember after another black man. Jacob blake bush. Shot by police in kenosha wisconsin
Nets' Aldridge Retires at 35 Due to Irregular Heartbeat
"Said breaking news in the nba so oddly out of nowhere after trade after he's released and signed as a free agent or trade average aldridge played five games. The brooklyn nets is announced retiring from the nba effective today and he's wrote a letter out on twitter. He says my last game. I played while dealing with an irregular heartbeat later on that night. My rhythm got even worse. Which really worried me. Even more the next morning. I told the team what was going on and they were great. Getting me to the hospital in getting me checked out though. I'm better now. What i felt that night with my heart. That night was still one of the scariest things i've ever experienced that being said i've made the decision to retire from the nba. Fifteen years put basketball. I and now it's ten health and family. I amen good for him. That old make you retire real. Let me take somebody comes to the heart and the rest of it near regular and feeling uncomfortable Good not good for him that he went through that but that he was able to get that reminder before something more severe happens that makes sense fifteen years. He's had a hell of a career you know. When the when spurs let him go and requests it nowadays person there. Yup yeah obviously that it was and of course. Thank portland ray talked about. How what kinda impact he'd make but the this is very good smart decision. Five games then playing the center position for them and averaging thirteen points a game like it was good pig. What made them and now. They've got they're making a difference. But you know what you're after fifteen years and he made thirty five years old makes great statement. I've given myself basketball for fifteen years priority. It's time to make health priorities. Had a hell of a run That's nothing to toy with and there should be not one soul the says. My gosh that can health condition is far more important than the ring that he may or possibly could want. It does not matter.
Nets Guard Kyrie Irving Misses Monday's Game Due to Personal Reasons
"All the sports in Minnesota that was supposed to take place on on Monday did not But the Brooklyn Nets took on its Timberwolves Tuesday afternoon, and they beat them. Carry. Irving was originally supposed to Mr Games still didn't play. He was out due to personal reasons. And carry. Irving has missed several games several weeks throughout this season due to personal reasons. He has only played in 38 now of their 54 games. He's just gotten criticized for it. He was actually find You know for violating covert protocols during one of those personal leaves. But I'm not gonna beat up curry Irving about it. I'm gonna beat up the Brooklyn Nets. They're the ones who allow it. Why do they allowed because he's one of the best players in the league. He's one of the best players on the team.
Brooklyn Nets make waves for bringing Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge to New York
"It up. The Brooklyn Nets are now a quote super team. I mean, they kind of already were after they traded for James Harden earlier in the season, the pair with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, but now that they've acquired Blake Griffin and LaMarcus Aldridge via buyouts, the cynical MBA social media sphere is crying. Foul. This nonsense has to stop all your lies. Most have been hating hard on both Alders and Blakes is gained for claiming them washed up has been, But now that they can ride the coattails of the Nets Big three and potentially win a championship. It's unfair. Come on, then. That's your doing what any organization would do if given the opportunity, acquire as much talent as possible, and if they do win a championship?
The Utah Jazz extend their Home Game win streak
"Took advantage of a depleted Brooklyn Nets team to run the home win streak to 17 games with the 1 18 88 victory. Nets without all stars Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving and the Jazz wasted no time jumping to a 21 point first quarter lead. Donovan Mitchell led Utah with 27 points. We've had instances um in my time here where we've played, you know differently because guys have been out, you know, and I think tonight really showed the mental fortitude we had throughout the entire game to contain it, Toe. Keep your foot on the pedal. Boy, Um Bogdanovich and Mike Conley and at 18 points apiece for the Jazz, while Alyssa Johnson, making the most of a 10 Day contract led the Nets with 23 points and 15 rebounds. I'm Jim Bernard.
Brooklyn Nets hold off New York Knicks to claim victory
"To brooklyn nets are so good. It's a little unfair. They play the next monday and they weren't getting enough stops in the first half. This is what makes them so dangerous. They could keep an offensive crater. Like hardin in the game steve. Nash did and he said you know. Let's get all d. around him. The bringing bruce brown. Nick claxton to get the d. Gone and it worked throwing kevin durant when he comes back. They've got too many weapons heart and finished the game with twenty one. Fifteen and fifteen curry had thirty four. The game did end on a bit of a strange call against julius randle who up for three point shot. Kara got a piece of it randall. Land and tried to put on the floor any chopped up and miss a three point shot but scott foster calling for travel because he put it on the floor. I've never heard of that rule. That scott foster said if it came a little bit loose. He could put it on the floor but that was a travel either way. The nets are a half game back of philly for first in the east and they could get
Irving's 34, Harden's triple-double help Nets edge Knicks
"The Brooklyn nets won for the thirteenth time in their last fourteen games hanging on to beat their cross river rivals the New York Knicks one seventeen to one twelve the mistrust their latest winning streak to five games by jumping out to an eighteen point lead than hanging on at the next have a chance to tie in their last possession hi we are being led Brooklyn with thirty four points James harden and thirty three along with fifteen assists and fifteen rebounds Julius Randle was call for controversial travel at the end top the next with thirty three points I'm Tom Mariam
Irving Drops 40, Brooklyn Nets Make It 12 Wins In Last 13, Top Boston Celtics
"It rolling and broke. The Celtics won 21 the one on nine to make a 12 wins in the last 13 Games. The XL. Kyrie Irving went for 40 is the game this season of 40 or more. James Harden at 22 near Triple Double. The Rangers
Former All-Star Griffin agrees to deal with Nets
"Former All star Blake Griffin has agreed to sign with the Brooklyn Nets joining all stars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden. Griffin became a free agent when he completed a buyout agreement with the Detroit Pistons.
Brooklyn Nets Closing in on Los Angeles Lakers in Updated 2021 NBA Championship Odds
"So let's get started says we're at all star weekend in the nba Not that anybody gives a crap when it comes to the all star weekend but it is a time to go ahead and look back at what we've seen so far in the nba. And how the title odds may have shifted because fez all of a sudden. We've got a brand new co-favourite expected or at least projected to win the nba championship yet. Brooklyn nets plus two eighty the same odds now as the lakers. The nets just about a week ago where four to one. Rj bell recommended a bet on the nets. At that time. I got to give credit. Heck i gotta give her own. Mackenzie rivers credit. He bet the nets at two to one to win the east. And i think i was buying the narrative of oh kyrie irving harden these guys. I just don't trust these guys to integrate to play well together and really the opposite has been true. The nets despite bring harden in missing lots of games. Obviously when he wasn't on the team and having durant missing so many games they're right there with the best record in the east. And i think they only get better and if i make one bet and the futures market i would bet the nets right now. Plus the two eighty jonas. You said you like the nets into win the east even more at plus twenty five right. That's that's the one that that. I would look at because when you get to the nba finals. I mean you know this. I mean i it just depends the matchups. We've seen a couple of weird situations happen in the nba finals. The past couple of years. You saw a bunch of injuries early on for the heat last year in the finals you saw the golden state warriors the year before that with the toronto raptors injuries took place in those final. So we've seen this happen before where it's such a long race when you get to the finish line. It's all about a war of attrition. who's going to be the healthiest when you get to that point. But as far as coming out of the eastern conference. I know that the philadelphia seventy sixers are a great story. But i'm with you fez. These brooklyn nets have played and exceeded expectations thus far just based on personalities. Now they do have kyrie irving. That's the problem because kyrie irving is like the guy who decides to read a book in the middle of party like people are doing cake stands and they're having a good time. There's a bathtub filled with booze. You've got stripper poles. You've got everything. And he decides. That's the time he's going to break out. Warren peace and sit in the middle of the party because he just wants the attention and wants to show that he's different and he's i mean if the earth is not flat then we shouldn't go to the bubble then they should change the nba logo. That's the only reservation. I have about the brooklyn nets. i'm not worried about james harden at all james harden shown he's willing to sacrifice and do something different and decrease his workload from an offense standpoint in order to try and make the team better. I'm not worried about kevin durant. He's already been paired up with stars before it had a couple of stars at he's played with kyri to me is the one piece of that that i would. I would be a little bit concerned with. And but here's the other part of the nets. And why. I like this and especially like to win the eastern conference. What's the one knock on james harden throughout the course of his career. Great regular season runs out of gas in the postseason. Well now he's not having to carry the entire offense himself. So if that's the case and you're going to get a better rested better in condition. James harden when the postseason comes around fez to me that just screams brooklyn coming out of the eastern conference
James Harden in Houston return, MVP case is growing stronger
"James harden incredible and his return back to houston he got mixed reviews from the fans understandably and then also joel embiid incredible forty points nineteen rebounds so stephen eight. Let me ask you this do they. James harden is actually the mvp right now to me is at this particular moment in time he is. I mean the only a half game behind. Joel embiid philadelphia. Seventy sixers and most of the stuff that james harden has done in a brooklyn nets uniform without the services of kevin durant and to some degree without kyrie irving. And so. when i look at it. I say to myself. Damn this guy comes in brooklyn. He's the three time leads leading scorer dirty points per game over the last three games. He's been absolutely sensational. And then he comes to brooklyn and says i'll be the point guard. I'll be the facilitator. I'll get everybody involved and kyrie's like thank you very very much. That's exactly what i wanted to hear. That's news to my ear and he's as run this team. Joe harris was on awards. Podcast and he was talking about. What a godsend james harden has been. What a leader. He has been how he's distributing the basketball etc etc. James harden is flat out ball. He's he's putting up triple doubles like they're going out of style. He's leading the league and assist. He's still averaging twenty five a game and by the way despite their troubles. They've won ten their last eleven games and this man has led the way. And they're only have game out of the philadelphia. Seventy sixers the number one seed in the eastern conference without again the services of kevin durant for the last eighteen games. That's why james harden in this fashion. That is why. I believe he is the league. Mvp at this moment in time
James Harden Has Triple-Double In Houston Return, Brooklyn Nets Roll
"James Harden had a triple double for the Nets and has returned to Houston toe play against his former team. Brooklyn ended up crushing the Rockets. 1 32 1 14 Jimmy Hart, who was traded to the Nets, January 14th and 29 points. And boards 14 assists. The
Mavs end Nets' 8-game run as Porzingis returns, Irving sits
"The Brooklyn nets eight game winning streak came to convincing end as the Dallas Mavericks trounced them one fifteen ninety eight the mass within a twenty five point first half by James harden to lead sixty eight sixty four at the intermission they've been held harden to just four points and that's the only thirty four in the second half with look at dodges leading the way Dodgers top tells his offense with twenty seven points adding seven rebounds and six assists Kristoff's we think is returning from an injury contributed eighteen points Brooklyn played without the hurting Kevin Durant and Kyra Irving I'm Tom Mariam
FDA says Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine meets requirements for emergency use authorization
"And Johnson, it looks like the FDA staff has endorsed their covert 19 vaccine for emergency use. So that would be the third vaccine that can be used in this country. On last night, the King's played and lost in Brooklyn but just interesting to note that that was the first night in New York, where the We're the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks were allowed to have up to 10% capacity in their arenas for games. In case you're wondering out of the 30 NBA teams, 14 now allow fans to attend games in Arena. Anywhere between 10 and 25% of capacity, Of course, California teams not on that list and not looking like they're even close to being on that list. At least not yet. Let's check
Los Angeles Lakers go in short-handed and fall to the Brooklyn Nets
"Lakers dropped the game to the Nets got blown out was not pretty wind up losing this one. It was 109 2098. Ouch out not good. We're going to break down exactly what happened and put a little bit of context into it. What does this mean for the Lakers moving forward now that you've lost this was a game that a lot of people look forward to a lot of people had this game marked on their calendars did the Lakers maybe not and there's a lot of different things for us to to get into here the team didn't play. Well, there's no question and we'll talk a little bit about that. But I think where we need to start is that the Lakers were down two starters and yes, it's fair to mention that the Nets were also Down Kevin Durant. That's a giant loss. The Lakers were down Anthony Davis age. A giant loss. They were also down Dennis Schroder and I thought that was a bigger loss than he would be on most nights because the Nets defense is so poor. I think schruder would have had a very good game tonight. Just living in the paint getting to the rim creating Havoc. He would have made a difference out there for the Lakers certainly, but unfortunately was not able to go do to contact tracing with all the cobit stuff going on. So, you know, that was that was definitely unfortunate. We certainly didn't get the kind of finals preview matchup that people have been thinking we would get from this game because you're missing those star players. I don't think we got a very good representation of who the Lakers are as a team. I also don't think we got a great representation of who the Nets are because they're so different with Kevin Durant, but we did find out that the Nets love to shoot lots and lots of threes and make a lot of them tonight. Let's finish the game shooting just 46% from 3, but that doesn't tell the whole story. They were 50% or better for almost the entire game. It was until the end that they dropped off doing a great job generating open Thurs. And the Lakers Defenders were struggling to get out there and get a hand up and they were knocking them down. Joe Harris ridiculous 647 from 3 for 21 points. I said, this is a pregame video game. But one thing that they couldn't do was allow another guy to get going if Kyrie gets his points if James Harden gets his points you're going to live with that you're going to try to make life as difficult as you can on them, but you can't allow another guide to get going in and this game Joe Harris certainly did again dropping 21 points and then you gave up 15 to Timothy Loma Carrboro 2015 points to TLC not great. They're from the Lakers side of things LeBron. James had to pretty much do everything 32.8 board 7 assists 33 minutes glad that he only played 33 minutes. No reason for you to burn him out in this game when it was clearly won. The Nets were going to win especially once they got into the second half LeBron 146 from three three of six from the line, okay? One of the only other guys in double-figures was sixteen and ten. So we got a double-double Montrezl Harrell with ten points. Nobody else really did a whole lot out there. Nobody else did did much on the offensive end. You had nine points from k c p but just 145 from 3 West Matthews who started and played some shooter 144 shooting o of two from deep in 24 minutes Mark assault eight points did shoot for 3:00. So I'd like to see them in four to five threes a night did shoot for hit two of them. So you'll take that but the Lakers on the night shooting just 27% from 3 that slide from behind the three-point line at one point. They were third in the NBA in 3-point percentage and they have dropped dramatically since then and in fact last game they were up just about forty percent from three against the wolves and that was the first game in a while they'd been even better than league-average from deep and that's usually about thirty-five thirty-six percent tonight shooting just 27% That's with me rounding up. That's not good enough that will not get it done 6 a.m. Turnovers on the night as well. That's not a good sign either pretty much everywhere things could have gone wrong for the Lakers. They they really did ten offensive rebounds compared to 8 to the Brooklyn Nets. The brake pads are terrible rebounding team. That was a place where the Lakers needed to dominate 24 free throw attempts for the Nets compared to just 14 for the Lakers each and every spot along the way where the lake she really needed to win that particular area free throw attempts 3-point percentage turnovers, the Nets came out on top and because of that they won the game and wanted thousand Ali so I wouldn't be taking your questions and comments, but I guess before we get into everything. How much do we really take away from this knowing? There's no Anthony Davis knowing there's no Dennis Schroder knowing that the Lakers how many times tonight did we see the Lakers throw out lineups that we've never seen before with five men groups that literally have not played a single minute together yet. Not played a minute. That matters and I know we get some people who say it always but you can't make excuses. You can't you know, you have to go out there and win every single game. I'm just telling you what happened in the game. We saw the Lakers defense breakdown thought that was the Nets offense was really good part of that was the Lakers energy wasn't there part of that was also that they were playing an unfamiliar groupings and defense being something where everybody has to be on the same page. You get defensive breakdowns like this when you throw a line up together add necessity, I don't blame Frank Vogel here. You have no shooter. No Anthony Davis your entire rotation changes and you're winding up throwing out these kind of bizarre lineups out on the court and that's going to create defense of break that breakdowns. It's going to lead to open looks because you guys aren't used to knowing exactly where they're going to switch off their defense of responsibilities are it's a tough situation to be in and so I don't want to make excuses for the Lakers energy. I think they should have played with more energy with more Pace should
Are Donovan Mitchell and the Jazz True Contenders?
"So tony. Let's start this story during last year's playoffs done mitchell and jamal murray have this epic battle in the nba. Bubble shot clock down to four. Mitchell has millsaps. Automobile three took three and returns the staredown ton of matchel clutch. Three pointer for the jazz. Eventually mitchell jazz fall in dramatic fashion a game. Seven two seconds ago for the winter. Tell us about donovan. Mitchell after that loss of known donovan. Pretty well in the four years. He's been with the johnson. I don't think i've seen him data emotional in the post game. There's so many things. I just feel like we could did and we didn't and i think that's just where the hurt really comes because quite frankly i don't i give them credit but i feel like we kind of eased off the gas. You have to remember the jazz at a be in the second half of game five which was supposed to be oppose out game for them to do more and this won't happen again is extremely down and he just basically said. We're not losing in the first round of the playoffs anymore. This ain't the end. This ain't this is just the beginning man. This is just the just the beginning. And i'm ready to go. Who begin right now and so once. The cameras were gone and donovan. Mitchell was back home in utah. How how did he spend. This off. season is funny. Because i talked to somebody close to donovan mitchell about this a couple of weeks ago and one thing he said was donovan was on the phone with people like literally. You know two or three days after the season Sam less workout. You know the thing about donovan. He's a guy that goes out and he works on his craft resolutely. And you know. I think that not only. Did he work on his craft during the offseason but after that the rest of the jazz from person one person fifteen worked on their craft under all season as well. Well let's bring it forward to this year. How did mitchell in the jazz start off. The current season they started off on four and with two really bad losses unforced turnover passing out an equal. Don't runaway league beasley. They lost the minnesota timberwolves at home. In the second game of the season they will blown out and outclassed in brooklyn nets team did james harden because they hadn't traded for them and they didn't have durant is everywhere. Count it at one but rudy rudy. Did show back up on the screen and brooklyn's play it with alan at the energy so basically re irving at a bunch of role players that blasted the jazz in new york. You know jazz nation on the fan base was kind of going crazy. The jazz a couple of games where they look like world-beater. They had a couple of games where they look really back. And tony. I wanted to ask you about this moment. That happened on live television a few weeks ago. That was really widely discussed. It started at halftime of jazz. Pelicans game when the tnt broadcast crew was discussing the game. My question to the panel. Donovan mitchell is that the point of superstardom where he can take you there. Or he's still all star status. He needs to be so go. Third option really. Yes yeah i feel like it. No talent to do it. He's a great score. Grew there but if he's not score. What else can you do. And when the game ended shack starts interviewing donovan mitchell. Who's still on the court right after the jazz victory. Yeah and he says. I said tonight. That you are one of my favorite players. But you don't have what it takes to get to the next level as central purpose on wednesday to hear what you have to say about that. I that's it i mean. What were your thoughts when you first saw that exchange so the irony of the whole thing is that the actual conversation was fair. That part of the conversation that happened at halftime that part was fair. We know the donovan. Vigil is a dynamic offensive player. We know that he is a star. We know that he is an all star. Caliber guy for him to be a superstar. He has to round out his game and do everything he's got to defend. He's got a rebound. These got make plays for others. What wasn't fair is shaquille. O'neal saying hey. I don't think that you have what it takes to get to the next level as a player. And i just wanted you to hear that. What's your reaction. And i felt bad for about donovan. Because he was really dominant in that went over to pelicans he didn't deserve to be blindsided like up on live television and frankly he handled it as about as well as you handle something like that. My rookie year norms gonna get better mood. I do wonder cuba. The look on his face. Kind of indicated that he wasn't happy you know about the question but at the same time he's always been a person that knows how to express himself. I think he's a guy that's kinda. Learn how to lockout the proverbial outside noise and kind of focus on what he has to do and i think a desk one of the reasons why he's improved so much as a player.
Harden visibly frustrated as Pistons Beat Durant-Less Brooklyn Nets
"So the nets without kevin durant you contact tracing loss to the pistons last night. One twenty to one eleven giving brooklyn its third straight loss and dropping its record to seven and eleven against sub five hundred teams. I won't point. James harden was seen getting visibly frustrated with his own teammates during a time out and when asked about their struggles after the game. Curry irving replied. I don't think that we go out every single day of our lives and sacrifice time in order to be average at anything and we look very average and we have the talent that the eye test presents that we should be dominating

"They have great players championship. Level players specifically kawai leonard but kawai has not been the facto leader of any of the team. He's been on. He's been the best player but he hasn't necessarily been the heart and soul the vocal leader of those teams wasn't san antonio which was still dunkin's team until the very end and then you go to toronto where you have kyle lowry. Plus you have a whole bunch of guys that have been there forever anyway so the team was kind of just close. Knit in and of itself. And paul george who has been part of successful playoff teams but he was on a pacers team with david west. And danny granger. Then he goes to oklahoma city and russell. Westbrook is the alpha team when the going gets tough. who in. that locker room is going to bring it together that i wonder about as the season progresses. I wondered about that myself. Chris said many times. I thought you know i still believe like if they could somehow get kyle lowry. Not just because he played with kawhi before but just because lowry is exactly the kind of personality. You need the kind of leader you need and because it could use an upgrade at the position. i don't know if he'll ever be available. And i don't know if they have the means to get it done but yeah like kyle lowry facsimile. Whoever that is. I think the clippers could use on the other hand. Eboka has an a respected voice and as a guy who can get fired up in a guy who i think. We'll talk to guys. And we'll hold guys accountable. I think marcus morris while not as accomplished has that kind of outgoing and forceful personality. I think that you know. I don't think i look at batumi. Some you know. Rally the troops guy. But he's a respected veteran. Who's been around and an his respected. I just. I think there's a different makeup that maybe we'll maybe won't be as big of an issue. Maybe it's not as big of a concern. They like they badly badly needed that kind of leadership in the bubble and they didn't get it. Maybe this season they don't need it as badly. And maybe with the that responsibility spread across some of the guys. I just mentioned. Maybe there's just less urgency for it. I don't know. I do know that the two stars are playing their butts off. They're both putting up great numbers as you point out. Don't know if it's sustainable. They're both career highs in assists. The ball's moving a lot more on this team period. It's a lot less taking turns or hero ball one on one stuff. Paul george is everything. Five statistics quick aside. Howard like that understand like in philly. The ball's moving more now like what is happening in philly. You're seeing the playmaking move up. That's doc rivers there and now you're seeing the playmaking happened. There's a lot of things i don't understand..

"I figured out. I say you figured out. And if you don't think you can't figure it out then while you're acquiring ben simmons. you're immediately trying to figure out who really wants them and what. They're willing to give up. Because ben simmons is worth a ton and would be worth a ton too a lot of teams around the league. And so if you don't think you can use him because you're married to john wall or because you don't think you can reform at the The lineup around him to maximize him quickly enough to make it worthwhile fine. He's still worth a shit ton. Get something else for ben. Simmons get the package if the sixers had woken up yesterday or tomorrow and said we're going to trade. Ben simmons think about what they could get for him. So you know it's chris. It's hard not to think about what the pelicans got for. Anthony davis and with the thunder. God for paul george and to look at you know the. Pelicans didn't just a ton of picks they also got brandon. Ingram lonzo ball and josh hart and the thunder didn't just get all those picks they also got shut gives alexander and a year of gallinari like the the rockets traded a recent. Mvp and got nowhere near those packages. And yeah i mean look. The nets picks this the first one. Is this your twenty twenty or excuse me next year. Two thousand twenty two by next year. They're still going to be really good that that's going to be a low pick. That's a it's a bottom ten pick. They're getting a swap the first swap possibility as this year which won't happen there is no swap this year. The the the nets will be better than the rockets so one swaps already off the board the next walkers in two thousand twenty three. I'd say it's probably unlikely that the nets are going to be worse than the rockets and twenty twenty three. So now you're down to the two swaps and twenty twenty five and twenty twenty seven and the best picks are the ones in twenty twenty four and twenty twenty six and we should note rockets defense in two thousand twenty four which is the second first. Rounder that definitely goes to them from the nets durant is turning thirty. Six that year hardened thirty five that year and kyrie thirty two. So there's a chance by twenty twenty four that they start to get the payoff but that's three years from now. All the depot could be long gone having left as a free agent this summer. Potentially so where are you. But i think the other thing that rafael stone said was that was the most revealing. Was the us chris. He didn't say we're really excited about using those picks he said people in this league like fix so i think what he was signaling was. We're going to package all this that we got hope that somebody else finds it more valuable than chris. Mannix than howard beck do today. We're gonna use those picks to to get the next james harden because that's how they got heart and they had a bunch of okay. Maybe you get a guy. Like ben simmons with those. I don't know like discipline. I get it. It's it's flexibility. We're seeing oklahoma city with four hundred seven. Picks of the next ten years new orleans humidity picks it. Just it just feels like it. Maybe it's just. I'm judging fan basis. Who are always crazy but it just feels like fan base. Unlike we got all these picks were gonna wind up like boston. Everything's gonna wind up like boston. But i'm just saying boston is such the exception to the rule. Just is there's a far greater likelihood that these picture in the teens and twenties..

"Should i have been looking for more excitement there from kyrie irving like should. I have been expecting that. I'm part of a super team again. One of my takeaways was look this. Is you know. Kyrie's in. Cleveland and boston was that he was one physician. He was in situations that were not of his choosing like he was drafted by cleveland. And then he was part of something for a couple of years and then lebron comes in and he's a part of something different now that resulted in a championship and what straight trips for him to the nba finals. But i always felt that was something that bothered him that it was a situation on of his choosing he gets straight to boston. He liked it early on. Didn't like it so much the end and then he goes to brooklyn and chooses to go back home. To the new york city area chooses to play with kevin durant and then two weeks into the season three weeks of the season. Whatever it is all of a sudden that team looks a lot different than what it was gonna look like when kyrie got there. I mean maybe i'm reading too much into it hard but that was one of my first thoughts that all right. Here's kyri now in a situation that he did not choose to be in and how he going to react to that. Is he going to embrace it or is he going to sulk his way through it. So i i totally get all that. Chris and i watched his his presser. It was twelve minutes long which you know. That's a pretty good longtime for a guy who probably by his body language certainly seemed like he did not want to be there. And i'll be there with the nets i mean. Be there in the in the in that press conference on zoom he was you know very emotionally kind of flat. His most expansive most interesting answers. I think had more to do with where he is emotionally and mentally how he's feeling about kind of just justice place in the world and i mean that earnestly not facetiously at all like he had some really interesting thoughts just as he was trying to semi explain himself in a very ambiguous way of course and he did not offer any specifics about his absence and about his return and i don't think he owes any of. That's how ios does it to his teammates and he says he has delivered that. They know they know where he's at. They know what's going on. I'll take that as a.

"Known or expected. The question is still going to be what happens. When you throw a kyri into the mix and how to. Steve nash calibrate. How often are three on the court together. How often is it just two of them because the luxury for the nets now is going to be even when their second units on the court their second unit might have. We'll have at least one of those two guys or one of those three guys and might have two of them think about. What would that does to another team. Second unit other second years. Just get blown off the court and granite again to my earlier. Point than its dept. Isn't that great. But when a second unit is anchored by kyrie or kyri n. katie for part of it and kyrie and hardened for another part of it. However you stagger those three you're always gonna have one and possibly two of them on the court doesn't incredible luxury and that does lift up everybody else because all three of those guys are great passers especially obviously harden and then kyrie so they will get better shots than they would otherwise so. It'll make some of those role players. Look better than they would but we should note before we leave the topic of of The minutes which i was talking about earlier hardin averaged forty minutes in those first two games and durant thirty eight. That is not sustainable. You do not. Maybe you want hard. And playing his way into shape at forty minutes a game. Fine and hardens been really durable in his career durant lest we forget his in his first season since akili surgery. I don't think that thirty eight minutes per game even over a two game stretch is ideal but that's where they are right now and that's what they needed to win those games and so again early success with hardened there and i think some early i don't want the make too big of a deal of it but there warning signs some early warning signs to go with it. Yeah and if you're.

And there's a <Speech_Male> reason why remember <Speech_Male> this name. We've talked about <Speech_Male> it a few different times. <Speech_Male> That brandon staley the <Speech_Male> defensive coordinator for <Speech_Male> the la. When we had redis <Speech_Male> island he <Speech_Male> would just take the other <Speech_Male> teams number one receiver. <Speech_Male> Basically out <Speech_Male> of the game can <Speech_Male> jalen ramsey do <Speech_Male> that <SpeakerChange> to davante <Speech_Male> adams <Music> <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> green. That's <Speech_Male> going to be a rule about. <Speech_Male> I don't know if he can pull a <Speech_Male> derail rivas <Speech_Male> because that was special but <Speech_Male> jalen ramsey <Speech_Male> is a superstar <Speech_Male> the quarterback position <Speech_Male> but this rams defense <Speech_Male> they got <Speech_Male> balls on all <Speech_Male> three levels. We <Speech_Music_Male> talked about aaron. Donald <Speech_Music_Male> jalen ramsey. <Speech_Music_Male> Nobody talks about <Speech_Male> linda floor. He had <Speech_Music_Male> double digit. "So if you were wondering why does shawn watson might be frustrated enough to force his way out of houston. Pull up a chair. We have a lot to unpack. Let's start with just how good he was this year. And the whole history of the sport. There are four quarterbacks who completed seventy percent of their passes at eight and a half yards per attempt over full season. They are joe montana. Steve young and drew brees. Who each did it once and it. All three of those seasons their teams won the super bowl watson just became the fourth. His team went four and twelve. How did that happen well. First of all they couldn't run the ball at all. They're running back. Said the fewest rushing yards in the entire league and then their defense was unimaginably terrible over the fifteen seasons that espn has been tracking defensive efficiency. This year's texans were the four hundred and seventy eighth. Best defense out of four hundred eighty. That is why franchise legend. Jj watt apologized to his quarterback after the last game of the season. Remember to that. This is a franchise that traded away deondraye hopkins. Who was first team. All pro. three straight seasons with watson he promptly went to arizona and caught one hundred fifteen balls this year. Now the texans have very little opportunity to add talent. They don't draft until the third round this spring. Because they traded to one's attitude to miami for laremy tunsil and the franchise's other legend. Andre johnson is tweeting warnings at sean by the way that was the first tweet andre his head in two years. That wasn't an ad for something. So what happens now. Frankly whatever sean wants because his team may not have listened when he suggested coaching candidates but if he really does demand a trade that will be something they cannot ignore. Those are my thoughts on this. Let me turn to the croup in here and see what we think. Shefty start with you. What do you make of the whole situation right now. Shawn watson where are we. You didn't even touch on the other option greeny. And that's shawn watson withholding services and refusing to report which he also could do and so there are a number waste here that the shawn watson can and potentially will exercises leverage on the houston texas. Now let's also say this. They just hide her new general manager. Nick caserio last week. I think nick caserio had no idea that he was going to be stepping into the.

"Of a dispiriting loss to the cleveland browns and the wild card round on a cold sunday night in pittsburgh and so at that point in time. Yeah it seems like maybe we will not get back to the spot. Maybe i won't come back. But again ben roethlisberger is gonna take some time and up until then. His intention had been to comeback and fulfill that last year the contract. Clearly him pittsburgh. We'll have to figure out any more palatable financial structure to make that happen so there's two pieces to this. It seems to me louis riddick. There's the financial piece. Let's say they can work out a way financially that it works for both sides. How about the football piece and you had of the second. The last week of the season when they lost to cincinnati. They looked terrible. They faded obviously down the stretch from a football standpoint. Do you believe that bringing back then for another year is their best chance to win next season. Yeah i do. I absolutely do not just because of the fact that i think he. He's good enough to help them win. But i think ben's presence on that football team one. Where if you take it off of that football team and you bring whoever whoever's going to be the quarterback on that team the let's just assume that he wouldn't be there this is this is. The football team has very very very high expectations. And i just don't know given where they are in the draft order and what they could possibly do and given this situation they could bring somebody in there. That could really give them the kind of leadership and kind of performance in kind of locker room presence at this. Football team demands a knee team that expects to win every single year. So i think that what whereas they're looking down the road to have a succession plan and i don't believe that there succession plan is on the roster right now. I think they also don't want to have that void at the quarterback position that they would be presented with if ben wasn't on the roster next year so i think they're going to try and do everything they can from their went standpoint to make sure that he's there and i think ben i mean i don't ever want to speak for him but i think he also knows that his contract as it stands is going to be something that has to that will have to look much much different and may require him to make some concessions as far as what he is wanting to take from a sorry perspective for him to be there and twenty twenty one so i think those conversations are going to need to be had. They're going to need to be had here before march rolls around and some of the guarantees kick in for his contract so they can go ahead and get bored with the rest of their planning. Because there's a lot of things that they need to do offensively to make sure that they're ready to roll. What do you would again to take the money out of it. If they can figure that part out how about the football piece listen. I agree with louis. Think big ben does give them the best chance to win in two thousand and twenty one. But i think the element that it was in plain sight for everyone to see is that they need to have some balance more physicality particularly from a dolphin salon departure might munch who was offers a lot longtime office line coach with the pittsburgh steelers who moved onto. The denver. broncos just had a huge effect on on this pittsburgh steelers office. They had no balance. They had no running game.

"Weekend. It is really good to hear your voice back on espn daily. It's good to be back. And i'm back not in orlando and not eating sushi. What what is this. It's strange times. The last time we spoke was almost two months ago. Exactly actually you had just left the bubble. You just return to where you are. Now you're in manhattan apartment. The corner bodega had welcomed. You back like beauty and the beast like little town came alive to welcome you in the i did bring the data guys. I brought them the nba masks from the bubble. They very much enjoyed those. That was that scored big free. Coffee points with them so melita. I am super excited to talk to you today. You are covering the brooklyn nets this season for. Espn yeah and you went to your. I unbuckled nba game in a really really long time <hes>. It was the first preseason game the debut of the brooklyn debts. And they face the wizards on sunday night in brooklyn. So what was it like actually going inside the building so i arrived at barclays center too early. The doors open at three. And i was standing outside at two thirty with alex schiffer who is the nets beat writer for the athletic. We stand outside six feet apart of the media entrance to barclays center for a half an hour chatting. Eventually we walk inside. We go through security as normal and the testing folks come through and they set up at their tables and they say okay. Who's i and i say i'm i i'll do it. This test is one of the longer. Cue tips goes a little bit farther up your nose and the results come back in six minutes. So i my one blue line as i was negative and i got to walk through to where we're normally sitting in. The seats are distance feet apart. Only seven of us that got clear to be in barclays center. And that's where. I sat and watched the game. You can interact with players. You can't interact with coaches you can't interact with the front office members you are up on the concourse level and they are down on the court and that boundary cannot cross so that sounds extraordinarily rigorous also kind of strange which sets you up to actually watch an nba game in a realized full time nba arena. And i want to get into. I want to get into kevin durant and his return to play in a little bit. But i want to start here. Melita with kyrie irving because it's impossible. Not to at this point he was making headlines all last week for refusing to speak to people like us in the media and all of that changed yesterday when he ends up finally having a session with journalists so first off. Please take us through. What made all of this so highly anticipated like this is a preseason media availability but it was certainly not a normal event well it was just preseason availability but preseason availability is also the first time we hear from these guys and because it was his. First preseason availability. It's also the first time that we've had a chance to talk to him since he had season ending shoulder surgery in february. So that's been a long time. A lot has happened.

"It's going to be really tough to stop him coming up. Screens in receiving passes from. Katie in the poster from moving isolating it's just it's going to be a really nice. Addition to their to their offense and I just think they have to almost bring him back because again, he has a lot of value for every team. Seemingly Nets included. If they lose them, they're really scraping for off while shooting because obviously. Arguing point it feels like you need somebody who can shoot and yeah. Yeah. That'd be tough tough seeing I like the C. though like actually article about how me to He's like he's he tries to do way too much. But man, he's like actually developed like do a pretty solid rotation player. His driving go game there's nothing gives me more anxiety like it's just like he it's either like the sickest layup that the nets had in two weeks or it's like he just it's just the. There's nothing there's nothing better than deals thing. I loved the Yeah Y'all need him to lake part of the rotation. Yeah I hope will retain him. Yeah. I. Really Hope they would retain him on the payroll for you know other guys and considering he makes barely anything. In Oh claxton too I wonder if we see that like it might be really rely on these rookie scale or minimum guys just to give them something all year because you're not going to get a better like I mean you maybe you could in free agency, they're just not working with much. So it's like you might as well retain TLC roll. The dice doesn't work well, like whatever you can go you can try to find a bio guy if it does work sweet, you have this great through guided. You really thought you had with David. Naba. Before he got hurt so Yeah it's. It's a really nice luxury for them I just there's no point in letting him go. Yeah..

"So I hope he'd be open to. Things. But I think the thing that's promising about 'em isn't it seems like he's open to putting a really good staff around it because it's GonNa be a learning curve it it really is. Of having any idea what he's GonNa? Look like I. Don't know but I like Steve Nash He's always enjoyable on guests thoughts. It just seems like overall a chill dude and sometimes actually a lot of the time that really matters. I was I mean the Kyrie quotes have been been to the ground. Of being like a collaborative approach understatement. reminded. Me Of like my college ultimate Frisbee team for a while we didn't have a coach. was like the best players would like make most of the decisions in kind of have this inner circle where they control the ideology and. That's what it kind of reminded me of. It's like an ultimate Frisbee team and Kyri in k. d say what goes on and whatnot whereas I was like Jared Allen, a younger player, just my footholds in like. Hey. What about me? You know? Gold still. tastic. So that's the VIBE I'm getting. You know seems like a power vacuum and Ultimately you know a found my place on the Frisbee team but I worry about those young. By it's. The players might be pseudo coaches. This brings me to a really great point. Scott I mean I think. I, was not expecting to get get to this talking point through alternate frisbee but. Man, I got into some some heated debates with Brooklyn fans early near for stuff I tweeted about I am notorious, not a big fan of Yonder, Jordan and. I think I equated immediately when when Katie in Kyri sign and DJ was attached to them on his deal I was like, Oh, I fucking hate this the analogy. Jordan is like the best friend of like the. Two captains of the ultimate team. Exactly. That's that's because I, don't know what your thoughts were I. Know Andrea does something scrimmages. You know he gets invited to all the. EASTSIDE scrimmages. Yeah. He starts even though shouldn't like I mean. Like. I could do what he does. Yeah. Like I. Don't know I mean he does some things a little bit better than than than Jerry's definitely better defensive rebounder. Better Post founder 'cause we stronger But I mean if I don't know where you at on the idea of the seem starting the Andre Jordan trends with Kyri in Kevin N. trading jared Allen it because there's not a starting spot. Warm. Your not trying to take things out of context but now. It's it's I. Don't know that that's definitely gotten to me this year I don't know how to feel about it along answer to this. So excited. The first two months of the De'andre experience was painful. It hurt it hurt every time. It was like abusive. I put a lot of films twitter do a lot of film breakdown stuff and it was just like it was like every article I was showing a box out that he didn't do oh here he should've rotated over the it was it was it was almost me like I was doing every single three days. I don't know what happened in in December January. He was decent for a month or two it was it was something clicked it was the intensity. It was right when they brought Wilson, Chandler back from that suspension. Him in Dj had just better chemistry in that in really when they actually had VAUGHN takeover for those few games they just kind of played together better I feel like they put up a lot better collection players around him..

They Nike it a little bit like sometimes. Nike. Takes these throwback jerseys and I feel like they're they do certain things like a little. It's just a little much select. The white on those jerseys is just like a little to pronounce for me I also don't know if they work on the texture like you look at those jerseys. Now you might not like the old school jerseys which I get it because I think people are split on that but the old school jerseys worked on that like Mesh kind of feel these dislike I don't know they. They look a little weird in that modern type of I guess material it just I don't know. But it's weird looking in a way. Yeah I think Al. Horford. Sister put out a picture today putting it side by side with a cherry icy and it looks like the exact thing is fantastic. We'll go say looks. Enjoy her twitter concept with that how that got a good laugh. Do No but they bring back the bring back the Byron Scott Era. Jerseys were sick like the. Gowdy gray once the red wines from a couple years ago I guess. Brook Lopez's rookie. Love. Your. Those I saw mockup of those around on twitter It was Indiana the Ngelo Russell wearing them. So clearly, it was from a couple years ago but those those are pretty sweet at which I would have been. Okay. With those I mean, these are cool. I think it would have been better if they just done like the plain white or the plane blues these are a little bit much that great court and I don't know how that looks but ultimately I don't really..

"Of the Ringer NBA show. My name is Logan Murdoch staff writer with the Ringer. And I'm joined as always by fake wait staff writer. I don't know if he's written a thing he wants to be one an honorary title I thought I thought that was my understanding of it. He hasn't written a a an article, a rundown anything, but he's here former NBA player former lockdown defender. Roger Bell. was. Chilling man I did however writing essays for a sixth grade class earlier today. So I got that going for me which I don't know didn't get published on a on a side so. We Are we are we are here. On the heels of a big announcement. Yeah. Steve Nash Future Hall of Famer. Future Hall. Of famer is the coach new coach of the Brooklyn Nets. What's going on listen I? Think it's it's it's a good. It's a good pairing with him and Katie. You know as well as anybody that there was a pre existing relationship Steve was a player development consultant for Golden State. He spent a Lotta time with Kevin Durant is I would talk to him over the years about his experiences. In golden state like not just learning from Steve Kerr and those guys who specifically he was working within. Golden State and it always Katie was always you know like one of the names that he said a lot what I thought he'd be working with the guard so that relationship and then you sean marks played with him in Phoenix. So there's a real. There's a real respect there as well. So I think it made a lot of sense. Just quick disclaimer we are part of the ringer podcast network in spotify. We're GONNA be. Talking about Nash. GonNa get into some game seven talk rockets, Thunder. That was a that was a game in the pre game in A. Prepaid meeting in a row came to virtual blows about this game. We'll get to that subject in an in a second, but I do want to get instant reaction on this this she got this nasty to Brooklyn Nets he got a four year deal. I gotta say I, it's it's a little troubling to me a little bit Roger I wanna get to this real real real real quick before we get to You know kind of breaking down but Nash Who has no coaching experience? Absolutely no coaching experience. He wasn't consultant with the Golden State Warriors during my time on the B. But This kind of a surprise to a lot of people in the league. When you have especially under the current climate, we're talking about equality and talking about all these things, a Marija list of coaches that black coaches that are very qualified that didn't get a affair in my opinion a fair shake at this job. You talk about a guy like Thai Lou who was who won a championship in his first year as coach of the Cavaliers has cosigns from Doc rivers was to to a was tutored under Phil Jackson. You've got ms who has the pop cosign you have Jack Von who who coached really well. In the bubble and had those Brooklyn, nets playing really hard down the stretch also a disciple of pop. David Vanterpool, one of my good friends and see at mates out there in Minnesota a lot. Yeah. I. Hear you nate nate McMillan played. COACHED HIS ASS OFF IN INDIANA. Alvin Gentry, you have all these coaches who? We as you know, it's very hard for a black coach to get and keep a job and during this climate and I know Nash has been you know for all intensive purposes been an allied to the to to to blackhaws and things like that. But. It's not. It's not a great visual when you're for league that speaking on black lives matter we're gonNA have a equality within the coaching ranks, and then this is one of the first big time hires that happens I just I think you have to. Vet Allow. A lot more. This is not twenty fourteen when you can get guy just off and and no one's really going to bat an eye like that. I think that there should have been more vetting and I think that. Zag Jag vons should have gotten more than just saying, Oh, good job. You should. You can be the lead assistant right now and I don't know of Nash is going to do a good job. I don't know what he's going to do but I think Jack van deserved a more than just being like, okay. Good job. Go be the lead assistant I think that's fair I mean there there are a lot of qualified black candidates, white candidates for that matter grinding in the NBA trying to hopefully one day become a MBA head coach so. You know I can't argue. With what you said there I, what I what I do know is the relationships that pre existed the ones that I just talked about they had to factor into that and restore Steve. All, and you touched on like clearly not black like Stevens is down as as any ally you're gonna find like and not just because he's my man. But because he puts like words to action like you could go see what he does like he he walks in and he talks to. I was just a really really. Smart Basketball Mine and a smart dude. So. At. When you when you put those two things together for me and then you add real relationships that make sense like I trust Steve's going to do a really good job with that I can't argue I. Don't have a defense for the side like I'm not the one sitting behind the doors in Brooklyn and I, and I want to validate those feelings because they're they're real like I think it's a it's a real thing. That way to. Steal. Just had this conversation. He'd probably be like right on I mean but he's he is the type of guy like you spent a lot of time with Steve of his interest are broad like he's he's into like very eclectic do very eclectic do but very. Very into what he's doing and very bright..

"Today cares. The Vert now in crab both back at practice. Yes. That's good to see. You guys are getting hole. But de ngelo Russell's are really interesting case here because he's the one guy who came with the pedigree based on on draft of of that expectation, and I think. Were outs around the league about what is this guy going to become maybe he's got a little bit of selfish tendencies a little bit. You know, you know, caught up in in, you know, whatever there was a certain rep attached there. He looks like a much better version of himself this year you've been with them for you know, more what season and a half. Now, what have you seen from Dangelo in terms of his growth is that about his game is a little bit about personality and just maturity what have you seen from him in the last year and a half? Yeah. Obviously, he's improved a lot. But he came in extremely talented. No, no one ever questioned his ability to play basketball, just plugging into the right scenario and playing winning basketball, honestly, and he's really done an unbelievable job of just being you know, sort of the head of the snake of the Brooklyn nets. You know, we really the success that we've had this year has been you know, we've been rely on him for majority of it. You know, he's had some huge games for us. And even the games where he's not like putting up a bunch of points. He's still with the one. That's facilitating. He's the one that's sort of the quarterback out there the coach on the floor. You know, he is an extremely cerebral player. He thinks the game. And he's very very smart. His basketball Q is extremely high and he's constantly thinking he's constantly thinking about how to get guys shots. How to get guys in rhythm. How to get guys touches and get everybody in playing their best basketball. And I think that is. You know that that is true indicator of really special player when somebody on the team is good enough to make everybody else that much better. And you know, lo is really at that spot right now, you know, the way that he's been playing lately, obviously you've seen him do it individually, but he makes everybody else on the floor much better players as well. I think people around the league kind of wondered too for a little while there that you know, Kenny was closing games. A lot with Spencer and not the Angelo. And yeah, there's a lot of Dangelo fans out there. I'd see on Twitter. We're actually you'll very upset about the idea that you hate he's the guy he's the star. He should be and it's slowly changed. And he's taken on a lot of that that Laking. How did how did you see him handle that? I think the NBA is psychologically difficult league a lot times and people don't really realize that and for him. He never wavered. He obviously competitor. And everyone you wanna play you wanna play it end of games. You know, you can't blame anyone for not wanting to be in the end of the game. That's just you know, human nature, we wouldn't be where we're at. If we didn't have that competitive streak in us, and he handled it extremely well. Just stayed even keel always stayed ready. He didn't let that you know, the decisions early on affect him when he was called upon to play and finish out games. And I think you're seeing now you just never know in this league. When you guys might go down guys my good into a slump it just ebbs and flows. There's a lot of things that happen over the course of a two games. And the most important thing is to just constantly consistently in your mind. Stay ready and to be in that moment, and he's an exceptional job of that. And just, you know, being ready when called upon I think what's striking about it too. Is that you know, in the wake of the trade from the Lakers, and and.

"Overall, pick in two thousand sixteen they got him in a trade for Thaddeus. Young Spencer Dinwiddie picked up off the scrap heap in free agency after he'd been traded by Detroit cut by the Chicago Bulls and Dinwiddie was putting up near all star numbers before he went down a few weeks ago. Jared Allen the twenty second overall pick in two thousand seventeen another pick that they manufactured traded boy on bogdonovich to the Washington. Wizards got the twenty second pick which became Jared Allen. So two picks their Jared, Allen and care slivered in the twenty s manufactured by trading veterans and getting picks and then acing those picks. And then of course, Joe Harris second round pick in two thousand fourteen by the Cavs traded to Orlando wave by Orlando picked up off the scrap heap by the nets. And then got a mentioned Demari Carol who. You know, big contract with Toronto didn't work out didn't perform, well, they're the nets used their cap room to absorb him and take two two picks from Toronto as payments for absorbing that contract. Those two picks a first and a second have become Jenan Moussa and rodeo Kuru who are both looking like very promising young players. They got those three guys tomorrow Carol who's been a very good rotation player for them, plus the two young guys Mussa and kooks for Justin Hamilton, and if you're saying, ooh, yeah. Exactly. Justin Hamilton phenomenal job. I Sean marks to assemble all these guys fantastic job by Kenny Atkinson and his staff for developing them, all and that's the real key to to the Brooklyn nets. That is the story of this franchise as it sits right now they've done a fantastic job in developing guys. Whether they're young guys coming in straight out of the draft. Whether they are rehab projects from somewhere else guys who didn't work out somewhere else. Everybody who's playing for Brooklyn in the last year or two has improved by being there. Incredible testament to what they are building. And by the way, they could have to max slots this summer to spend on free agents. And I can't imagine why. Kevin durant? Kawhi Leonard Jimmy Butler, anybody else wouldn't consider the nets because they've already got a great supporting cast sitting there waiting great arena there in New York. No, it's not the Nixon. I understand the Knicks have the mystique, but the nets have all the same advantages in the market. So it'll be interesting. I'd be interesting to see whether the superstars do consider them. But I wanted to have on Joe Harris because Joe as much as any of these guys, I mean, they're all similar story. He hit him is is what they're building what they've become. And he gives us that insight into what what would that mean when we talk about culture or player development? Joe Harris is a product of that. So I thought it'd be great to have him on this team as I say is exceeded all expectations. Joe Harris who now, you know, the fourth ranked three point shooter in the NBA by percentage has exceeded. Al- explications and got a nice contract. As reward last summer. There are really fun story. Joe Harris has a really fun guy to talk to. He's got that hipster beard that makes him look so perfect in Brooklyn. So we talk about the hipster beard pad to talk about the player development talk about what you do to prepare for the three point contest at all star weekend, not normal to just grab a bunch of balls off the rack, and and shoot. And we talk about his brief cameo in the twenty fifteen NBA finals while he was still with the Cavaliers fun conversation. Really enlightening. I think you're gonna enjoy it. And so here, we go my interview with Joe Harris, I'm now joined by the most Brooklyn of all the Brooklyn nets guys just as skilled at hitting a three point shot as putting three shots of Espresso endure Ganic, then brewed lots. How's that for an intro? Joe hairs that that's an intro right there. I definitely haven't heard that one before. I didn't work in the artisanal and need to work in artisanal and beard is artistic beard is definitely artisanal or this. This has become your persona especially this year, not really until the beard, suddenly the beard arrives. And now, you are you're like more than just the Brooklyn. Nets greatest three point shooter. You're like the nets mascot. Me of Brooklyn..

"Bleacher report. My guest today is heading Charlotte soon to compete in the three point shootout. Yes, that is Joe Harris of the Brooklyn nets. He'll be taken on the curry brothers, and some others and representing the Brooklyn nets. Yeah. The nets one of the feelgood stories of the NBA season felt like it was overdue to bring on somebody from the franchise. I know a bunch of you have been requesting that of heard from you and apple podcasts in the comments section there and on Twitter folks, clamoring for somebody from the nets because this has been one of the better stories in the NBA this season, clearly the Sacramento Kings out west similar, and I feel overdue to get somebody from the kings on here. But the nets are just a fascinating. And I kind of want to go into this real quick before. I bring on Joe Harris because I think it's been lost. Just how incredible their turnaround has been it was only a couple years ago. They were deemed the most hope. Franchise in the NBA. I think by ESPN, and it was totally justified. Right. They they not only had no talent in the wake of the tear down of that. Joe Harris, Joe Harris. The Joe Johnson Darren Williams brook Lopez era, de unfortunate, jevon Garnett Paul Pierce trade that cost them all those picks. And so when Sean marks and Kenya Kitson took over few years ago. It was considered hopeless. Not only because they were you know, they had no talent. But they had no picks to get that talent. That was a unique situation. I don't think there had been anything like it in modern NBA history or or possibly ever to be a franchise that was that far down and with no clear path to getting better. And it's interesting to look at this. The nets were lasting in the playoffs in two thousand fifteen so it's only been three years that they've been out. And right now, they are as I record the sixth in the east twenty eight and twenty seven record and they're pretty certain to make the playoffs. And so it will only have been a three year. Really? There are five teams in the NBA folks that have been out longer most of which are not going to make it this year either. I'm gonna go through this real quick just for perspective here the Knicks and the nuggets have not been in the playoffs since twenty thirteen. So that's two years longer than the nets drought. And of course, the nuggets will make this year, the Knicks someday, but the nuggets are going to breakthrough in spectacular fashion. But those teams have been out longer. The magic have not made the playoffs since twenty twelve been in the lottery every year still no closer to the playoffs. The Phoenix Suns have not made the playoffs since two thousand ten the tail end of the Nash Stoudamire era and they've been in lottery every year and are absolutely nowhere near finally making the playoffs. And then finally, of course, the Sacramento Kings, no playoffs since two thousand six as a loan drought, folks. And again handle their picks still couldn't breakthrough and the nets with no picks under their own control traded away or given in pick swops. Are somehow here on the doorstep of the playoffs with what we got twenty seven. Or so games to go is incredible. And they've done it with mostly cast-offs and rehab projects. Their highest picked player, of course, Dangelo Russell who they got from the Lakers who were tossing them aside. The Lakers were ready to move on the nets trade brook Lopez and the pick that became Kyle. Kuzma, let's be fair. But still de ngelo Russell now all star has very much earned it. And he's. I don't even he's not even the face the franchise. They've multiple faces of this franchise because they have they have gotten so many guys who have just come here and overachieved care slivered who was their best player when he went down a couple of months ago twentieth..

"Forty eight power back senior nba writer for bleacher report and my guest today is brooklyn nets head coach kenny atkinson caught up with kenny here in chicago at the nba's draft combine he was kind of take a few minutes out from all of the scouting and player interviews evaluations and meetings to chat a little bit about just the stage of development for the nets obviously been a tough couple of years he's been there for two seasons now and kenny i came in with john marks of course to what was considered the most hopeless situation in the nba not just because the nets were bad in need of a rebuild but obviously out a lot of draft picks many of whom are now playing in the conference finals for the celtics unfortunately but the nets do have picks right now they've got the twenty ninth pick in the draft courtesy of toronto from taking on the damore carol contract they've got the fortieth and forty fifth picks and they've done a really nice nice job working around the edges the last couple of years it's not easy when you don't have your lottery picks when you're not a free agent destination yet at least but they've found some diamonds in the rough and credit sean marks and kenny four what they've done spencer dinwiddie just we just learned with the last couple of days is a finalist for most improved player that's a credit to this franchise for identifying and developing spencer dinwiddie who had been not not able to stick with a couple of other teams and they've got some promising young players vert had some really nice moments this past season rhonda hellas jefferson is shown progress and as i've joked this whole season of it's a cruel joke for the cavs fans i'm sorry cavs fans but i said back in october i thought that the wait is team played the nets they played hard that they were going to potentially be there they were going to ruin the career of trade basically and it's just really what happened we thought this week with the lottery the cavaliers have the nets.
