Tatum scores 31, Celtics sizzle in 139-96 rout of Nets

Jayson Tatum scored 18 of his game high 31 points in the first, a quarter that Boston outscored Brooklyn 46 to 16. I like the way we came out. Obviously we shot the ball well, but I think just our attention to the game plan to play the right way and we were just you could tell we were ready to go from the jump. Tatum's teammate Jalen Brown at 7 threes as well and added 26 points for the Celtics who made 26 three pointers in the game. Break it out, Boston

"Don't fit together. Bob, we've talked the whole episode. We haven't mentioned the name Ben Simmons once. Ben Simmons, since the last time I talked to my God. It's been terrible. It just has not been good. The worst things that can happen in the NBA is when you have a max contract player who's not living up to that max contract. The nets are in that position right now. Maybe their hope is that he can get a little bit better, but the reality is for all the self inflicted drama that the nets have had that they potentially will have more of if they hire you may you don't, you can put anybody in that role. It is not going to fix the issues that the nets have because number one, the players don't fit well together and they're not going to win enough. Number two, the culture that every great team needs isn't there. And you can't create a culture with the same group of players that have not been able to create the right culture and think that it can change overnight or in a couple months. So the people running this team on the episode we recorded last time, we also established that it was being run via partnership, right? Literally on the same page, a boardroom logo, Kevin Durant's logo on the same page as net's letterhead. So this is Shawn marks, the GM of the team, and Kevin Durant. The star of the team hand in hand running things is the message that we got, Nick. And right now it does seem like this is the sort of desperation going for email you trying anything that you might do if you didn't think this partnership was going to last much longer. It feels like the sort of thing you do when you know that you may not be around next year, to be honest. It feels like this is the last chip, the nets feel like they have to play. This is what you don't get news comes off as and Pablo, I'll be honest when that words report came out the first time I thought there is no way in hell. Even the nets couldn't pull off this move given all the other issues that they're dealing with. But reeks of desperation because the feeling is all well. If we get a coach in here who Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are going to respect, then all will be well. Pablo, who wanted Steve Nash there to begin with. Come on. Right. I mean, Nick, those guys ousted Kenny Atkinson, the incumbent nets coach when they arrived, the man who was highly respected throughout the league to get Steve Nash and now KD and Kyrie are getting a new guy that they like even more to try and solve a set of problems that I would argue can be traced right back to KD and Kyrie themselves. Pablo, I do not fault Shawn marks, Joe si, the nets for making the deal to get Kevin Durant. He's one of the all time greatest in making that deal. Part of it was, we'll take Kyrie Irving too, who's unbelievably talented, but his track record of screwing up teams is very well documented. In order to win a championship in the NBA, you have to have talented star players to get you to one level and you have to have a culture that is strong enough to withstand those talented star players and the ego that they bring. The nets made the decision to go for the stars over the culture, believing that over time the culture would work with these particular stars. It was a bet that they've lost. And if you don't get is the guy and they believe that that can make a difference in the short term. Okay, maybe they'll play a little bit better. In the next couple months and the defense will come around a little bit more. But one more time, this team was built to win at all. And they were real close if they didn't get injured a couple of years ago, and then the vaccination mandate, a bunch of crazy stuff happened. But to think now with the same personalities and Ben Simmons that everything is going to come together is a fool's errand because that is not the way great championship teams are built. You can't microwave what this team needs the most. Yeah, Nick fredell, our team needed you today, so thanks for doing this again. Always buddy, and I look forward to the next chapter because you and I both know it's coming. Oh, we do. We really do. And until then, I am Pablo Torre. This has been ESPN daily. And I'll talk to you tomorrow.

"I mean, let's talk trade packages now because I find all of this very interesting. So the name that Adrian wojnarowski, ESPN, reported were Phoenix and Miami. Those were the two teams that were specifically referenced in regard to Kevin Durant. Phoenix, I would imagine it's some construction of Deandre ayton and Mikhail bridges. I think that you can make a case that that is to all star level talents if things go right for Kevin Durant. I've seen a subsequent report saying something like they won't trade him to Phoenix except for Devin Booker, that seems ridiculous to me. To be honest, maybe he doesn't go to Phoenix, but like you're not moving Devin Booker after he just signed this four year extension. I don't even think he's eligible to be moved to be honest. No. He's not. So that extension, yeah, he's off the table. Yeah, so that seems ridiculous to me. Having said that, the Phoenix thing gets complicated, which I'm sure you have now delved deeply into in regard to the collective bargaining agreement machinations. Without getting on a 5 minute explainer on base year compensation, can you explain why this is more difficult than meets the eye in order for a Deandre ayton Mikel bridges package to go to the Brooklyn Nets? Yeah, I'm pretty sure the money in terms of what Phoenix would be sending in what the nets would be saying in terms of salary gets tricky on that front. I think the luxury tax apron comes into play too. I want to say with some of this. Yeah, which I think is the quickest way. And while we're on the CBA, you know, bam adebayo has been talked about a lot with all this with Miami, but he's an eligible also because of the CBA clause where you can not trade for two guys on rookie extensions and then that's already having Ben Simmons. He counts as those rural rookie extensions, that is. Yes, yes. So yeah, no, I feel like Larry Kuhn today with the amount of CBA exceptions I've had to brush up on. It's complicated, man. This is gonna be a wild one. And so if you're Miami, you don't have all of your picks moving forward. I think you have quite a few of them, like not a crazy amount though, so it's like Tyler hero, and all of your drafts moving forward. I don't think that's going to be the best offer on the table. If your Phoenix, it's Deandre ayton and Mikhail bridges. Essentially, the way this works is that the roys O'Neill thing actually hamstrings Brooklyn a little bit here in regard to being close to the apron because their money is higher. If you bring in a player via sign and trade like Brooklyn would be doing with Deandre ayton, that player, you can not, as a team, go over the apron, which is like what 35 million above the south..

Mayor Excuses NYC Athletes, Performers From Vaccine Mandate

Healthcare workers, cops, people worked in the fire department. Police department, city of New York, they're out of work. You know who doesn't have to abide by the vaccine mandate now? Millionaire athletes and performers. I'm not kidding you, the mayor of New York has waved his magic COVID wand and because Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving wasn't being allowed to play home games at the Barclays center, the mayor has now exempted performers and athletes from the New York City vaccine mandate requirement. The Confusion Behind the NYC COVID Policy
"Kevin Durant, talking about the strange COVID policies of the mayor of New York. One of their players, his name is Kyrie Irving, he's not been vaccinated, but because of the law in New York, he can not play. In New York. On the road, however, he can play. Now get this, a visiting opponent in Brooklyn in the same stadium where Kyrie Irving can not play can play even if that player has not been vaccinated. Let me see if I can get this straight. Kyrie Irving has not been vaccinated, he's a member of the Brooklyn Nets. Because of the law in New York, he can not play with his team, but on the road he can play. Even though one would think on the road, he's jeopardizing health of his teammate and his opponents just as he would be jeopardizing the health of his teammates and opponents in Brooklyn, if he were to play, not being vaccinated. However, an opposing player who's not been vaccinated can come to the Brooklyn Nets stadium, where Kyrie Irving can not play because he's not been vaccinated, even though that player has not been unvaccinated, and that player can play.

"Say that's the one thing i will say about this again and i just lost a couple. More nets follows They every season asks for different things and they like you know the bubble was you need a group that's going to be Mentally tough for gonna throw them For that cliche out but that was led last year for the two years ago asked for the bucks last year they had that so but i also i agree with you on the bucks thing it. He just play style. That's really really hard to come back the next year. Yes and grinded out again. It was such a grind every single game watching them which i enjoyed. But i also understand that our thing to have as your basal exactly and like i should be fair to like they lost onto david. Chen zobel like looking at the majority of teams in the playoffs. Like okay dante. Great he was like their fourth or fifth best player last year one of their more important offenders but also like okay well. The hawks were missing andrea hunter. That really hurt them and they were still very good but like they got lucky with health in some ways to like a philadelphia. Joel was hurt for most of the series against the hawks like obviously brooklyn loses two guys or you could say one and a half. But i really thought it was losing to because james was like immobile by the end of that series It's just very difficult to have things work where you do. Have everyone healthy. So not to be unfair to milwaukee like i do think they got a little more versatile they got younger. Like i like the idea of shamir like a obviously people. I like him as like a rotation guy who liked thus stuff defensively. And i don't mind the hood either. Yeah i like you bank on rodney hood coming back from his achilles injury and and being healthier this season and i think that's a viable thought like i liked the grace analogy quite a bit. Actually he's actually given what they did to to give that up like again like okay. Well you're still relying on pat continent potentially to close games. I don't. I don't love that. So i am not a big fan of the landlord so maybe jordan or tastes that but like again..

"I welcome to jenny. Hoops said we're going to break down days number one two and three in las vegas nevada sunday. Monday and tuesday night so sunday was the first of nba summer league. Take it back from the start of my trip. There leaning into vegas saturday night pre lit around eleven o'clock at night getting the mgm right away. When realizing that i was really hungry. Didn't know exactly what to do. I looked up everywhere nearby things. We're feeling if you're a pretty close this late at night. But i found a pizza place in the mgm. Mgm was huge. I was walking around it. There are people everywhere. There's a lot of stuff going on but there wasn't really a lot of food options on this one pizza place and it looked pretty good. There's a long line. And i saw people walking away from it with pizza. Boxes ended up being about eight dollars a slice for pizza. I ended up spending. I wanted three slices with tax and everything was around forty dollars which is pretty absurd. But that's just my first experience in vegas while i was waiting on line or before. I think i saw the price. Even i saw one woman being carried out on a stretcher. Hopefully she's okay. I'm not sure what happened there. I'm lou must have been something with with with just drinking too much but yeah just overall a lot of stuff happening on that first night on and then checking out in the morning walking a mile to the link. Which wasn't my best idea. I really i. I wasn't really. I don't want to keep accruing uber charges. So as you know what. It's a mile away. I'll just walk it when my suitcase and ended up. It was a mild felt like ten miles with the scorching. Las vegas nevada heat and of course all the cars whizzing by. It wasn't the best idea. I've had but still just a fun experience just walking around seeing an feeling the city. I was a lot of fun once. I got filling out the bags with the bell service and once the fantastic forty event. I was really excited for this one. Because i had heard about it from kevin takas podcast. Sports business secrets. And i knew a couple of my guests are going to be like nelson to roba. Who unfortunately left before. I got there my dig. It's me with kevin target. Though because a lot of fun and shall treat was hyun-sil emmanuel's playing for those of you know he's the he's kind of big on talk instagram's he's the basketball players kinda gone viral and overtime for having playing with only one arm missing one of his arms from tragedy and saying when he was a child and he honestly balled out during the game from from scouting perspective or coach's perspective was kind of an impressive as layup lines. I felt like he was really. It looked very sloppy. It's something that i think for most players a college coach. They'd walk out of the gym right away because he started just doing. Some sloppy dribble moves on a ball of missing. Layups on your player of that caliber. You would think you know you'd be keeping teammates engage and taking things a little more seriously than during the game. Obviously really well though made some really nice shots obviously with using his one hand. He's one handed three point shots and he also got a donkey caught your baseline with the right hand jumped up and flushed it which is pretty which is pretty impressive. I'm ba- really. His attitude and his overall approach to the game was kind of startling to me. One thing that really stuck out that is kind of what made me see the other things. As being such red flags was. He picked up a technical foul..

"He would play and they would always get lit up and so he he may not be the guy who can you know really be like a great defensive anchor but i think he can be a reasonable. I mean he could even be your twenty minute game starting center on some team. That had some better defensive pieces around the than utah does where you're not relying on him to be rudy gobert when really go bears out of the game in this defensive system. Let's talk about the other. I mean so. I would join those who we both picked six minutes here. I would say that. He has positive value at thirteen million for next season. Ingles is getting a little bit long in the tooth angles at this point. He's thirty three. He'll turn thirty four before the start of next year. But i mean he shot ridiculously this year. Replace capable defense and forward. I mean in the regular season. The playoffs the playoffs. He might just be too bad Shirt and so and ingles he. Can you know. I love him like necessarily creating for himself. He also fits beautifully jazz offense. You wonder how some of those things would work a little bit differently but being forward sized means that you could fit in a lot of other places that that a like six foot four dude cannot and so i think if they if ingles was england's in some ways is the he's the lightest lift because he both has the shortest contract and they're like there's so many teams that could just use somebody in their forward rotation and so could do that but those places important role the jazz and then also ingles is a part of the reason why he's so important here is that he is a more logical starter replacement. For almost anybody then clarkson in is because if you know if race of neal's out or mcdonagh's out or if mitchell mcconnell you're out i think that he is the more logical fit than carson for those for those situations and odds are you know. The jazz stayed remarkably healthy this year. Odds are you're going to have a lot of points during the season when somebody can't play. So here's conception that i'm thinking joe ingles and i. This is after already getting off a favors. Hopefully you don't do the waste versus made. It's the number thirty Or or a future i. They've got they've got that option to write. The and a trading partner would probably be more interested in in a first available draft which almost certainly will be twenty twenty four. they're The pick deo to memphis is top six protected next year. So that almost certainly will go So you're probably looking at twenty twenty. Four i if you trade a future one. It was about a year ago. Now that there is that massive shortage of toilet paper. Remember that even still. It seems like you can't get as much as you might want to at the store and that shed some light for me on the idea that toilet paper is not very environmentally friendly. The over twenty seven thousand trees are cut down each day to make toilet paper. And that's why now i use real. It's one hundred percent. Bamboo toilet paper. Bamboo grows faster than trees. It doesn't need to be replanted. And it's just a more sustainable material overawed three ply making it both soft and strong. Even the tape is plastic. Free as of course is the rest of their packaging and every role purchase helps fund access to clean toilets for the two point. Four billion people who currently have to defecate outside. So it's good for you. It's good for the environment. It gets sent right to your house which is awesome with free shipping. So you don't have to take up ninety five percent of the room in your shopping cart just with toilet paper. No reason not to give it a try listeners of dunked on get ten percent off their first order with the promo code cap space.

"Maybe there'd be a non guarantee the i maybe i'll be surprised. It'll be less than that but i mean he's still really good like he made the all star team the street. He's got this hamstring issue. I mean maybe some teams would be scared off by that aspect that it does seem to be kind of a chronic thing for him now but I i think you know. Maybe that's a little bit less than the first years but that seems like i want to count being much less so i'd how do they create more room than other because mike conley is a bigger priority than the other guys. How do they create the room other than by. Just not reciting mike. It's difficult because we'll assume bear and mitchell are absolutely unequivocally locked in and they should be so then. It's the only other players that make more than five million dollars for the jazz are bouillon bogdonovich. After this you know so starting next year two years thirty eight million left. Joe ingles one year thirteen member. He's extended a couple of times. Clarkson is the second year of his deal. He'll make twelve point for favors seven royce. O.'neil a and clarkson by the way has twelve thirteen and then a player option for fourteen over the next three years favors also as a player option for twenty two twenty three at just over ten billion and and this is exactly why i went so crazy when the jazz gave favors in clarkston much money also for such a long time. Last offseason is that there was this we already knew about connolly's pending regency then giving those players a combined twenty million in separate decisions but you can think of it together because they're same time that twenty million matters a whole hell of a lot right now if v let's say fifteen million is because derrick favors is a negative value contract. I don't know that there'd be many people who disagree with that about ten million a year for two years and carson sixth man of the year easier do something but also plays a really important role on the jazz. So yes it. I would guess that if you could wave a magic one. The easiest way to do this. The best way to do in terms of the jazz quality would be find a home for derrick favors because maybe first round pick from two thousand twenty two okay as buki could step into some of that role. Maybe you could get. You could get a senator tony bradley. A free agent. Danny badly a free agent like you could get somebody for the minimum. You could could do all those sorts of things. But i you know. I don't think that's going to be going to be easy. And what further complicates that is so if people agree with me and i think they like the general andrews will and jazz would need to give up something in order to get off of favors twenty million roughly two years. They don't have a lot of great sweeteners. so in terms of second round picks the jazz. Only they don't have a second until twenty five and then they have their twenty five and twenty six twenty seven so that's a lot out. They also the jazz also have their own. I this year. But oh in a likelihood there twenty twenty two. I i think giving up a first for to get to offload der favors is way too much but maybe if you get somebody in that deal that can also help you know. There are other ways to present up so it's difficult and it's also like with favors not being an expiring contract. You can't necessarily do the maury. I always think vigil maury the murray trick of stay over the tax by more than you want to pay and then find a taker because favors money. It's harder to find that in the end during season than it is in the offseason. Actually i'm not so sure that favors i mean i think it's it's gotta be it's gotta be one of three guys we're going to go. Clarkston ingles or favorites. Those are the three one of those guys that they're going to need to find a way to move and move without taking back cements annual salary now of course that throws in the fact that they also need some stuff on this team to which will get to. But you'll favors. it's not you know. I know he didn't play all that well at times this year and you wonder about how many minutes he can play. But you know robin lopez in last year's free agent market. When i think they're honestly were probably more centers available. Got what was it. One year seven million. I agree it's negative value. I think you know with you. Mentioned the problem with their second rounders But just in a vacuum like a second good second to get off of him. I don't think would be like. I don't think it would be more than that. Necessarily an independent. It could also be something like jazz trade number thirty but don't get something else back like maybe they get the the fortieth pick in this in the in the draft as opposed to like giving the something like that could end working to right and on that traffic. By the way they can trade that at the draft Obviously if you take a guy then that changes but they cannot trade it before the draft. Run there that you can. You can have pick have trade range. Pick make big selection that the other team wants and that won't break the won't break. Zambian doesn't care after the pick is made so if somebody else has we're going to do this that's fine And i agree with you that favors in a basketball sense is probably the most expendable of that group. Because you can. There are options. There's you know there's tony bradley. They could try to go more. The power forward. Get a small guy. Hope as a bouquet can be like your big guy on the second unit but then if you wanna go with the group that's more versatile yo you can bring in kind of that Someone who's a little bit. Maybe markeith morris or even like someone like mohawk class or maybe pneumonia bielema or something. Some of these guys. Who are just going to be more four point five for you some with better defensive than i think favors also in a different setting could look a lot better defensively than he did this year because they just had absolutely zero defense around him on that second unit group when.

"We'll let's begin our offseason outlooks here with the utah jazz and the jazz wonderful regular season sort of regular season. That is really as good as any team could have a essentially when you look at some of the advanced numbers. They fell off late with some of the injuries. But obviously a team that is poised to be very solid during the regular season if they have their whole group and if they can keep it together also had a ton of flaws that emerged in the playoffs. Both on defense where. They don't really have many good perimeter defenders and rudy gobert can get spaced out and maybe to a lesser extent. Offense going against the switches. The they did largely score. Pretty well against the clippers overall. So i think probably the place to start here is just with the financial situation for this team. Yeah i think that is a very good place to start. And there are a few non guarantees that that are kind of on the margins but a good rough assumption for the jazz is that they are right around the luxury tax line. If you don't count anything for mike conley so that That includes the thirtieth pick. They have the last pick of the first round. Theoretically could a little bit. They have some non guarantees which we'll talk about later but roughly. That's the line. So so that means any money that they give to my conley to george yang that pushes them over the tax and it appears that owner ryan smith new owner ryan. Smith is willing to pay the tax. But as we've discussed so many times in the show there are a lot of different thresholds here and where that line is because for conley the years and the dollars better and so what. How far are they willing to go and also theoretically what else could they cut in case. What conley warrants. Whether that's through you know through their negotiations or talk at other teams or whatever if that's more than you're willing to spend. How do you get from that point to where you wanna be. And we'll see whether there's a reduced luxury tax for you for next year. I don't think that there will be it. Seems like we're on track to just have fans back in arenas have relatively normal income streams again so if mike conley were to get a contract that were twenty million for next year and everyone else stays on the rosser throw in their thirtieth draft pick which they will retain from that conley trade It's going to get pushed over to twenty twenty two. They would be twenty million over the tax and that would lead to a tax payment of forty seven million dollars and a team salary plus tax of two hundred four million dollars so it especially in a market like utah that means that the team will almost certainly lose money at least for that fiscal year next year. I'm going to go ahead and say that. I don't think it's realistic. That the utah jazz will pay that much tax to you. And i hope i'm prove wrong. And perhaps if they had gotten further in the playoffs that might have changed that a little bit but obviously they had a bunch of injuries and stuff to do. You agree with me that we will not see the utah jazz paying a forty five million dollars tax bill. Next i'm open to being proven wrong and smith just took over the team so we have to kind of see what his rules are going to be. But twenty million seems like a lot. Now maybe fifteen you could get into that range where it's a lot more palatable. You don't get all the the ramp ups you know because it's it's a progressive tax structure meaning that the further you are over the line you more you pay dollar you over the line and so that's gonna be a lot for for utah to swallow and what gets sticky here there to kind of different things so one would be okay How many other teams are interested in calmly and what what what kind of numbers doing. But then the other one is in certain circumstances. You could see teams. Say well okay. We're not gonna go. We'll pay you less per year and lower that burden in the immediate especially with the cap eventually going up but we'll do more years but the problem for utah is that they already have go bear in mitchell on these contracts. Dennis lindsay did most of his work for the summer of twenty twenty one last year because they got mitchell and go bear on. These extensions the so. The good thing about that is you. Don't have to worry about them leaving or anything else. But the bad part is that's a lot of money locked up on donovan has two more years at roughly nineteen million year. So calmly gets three to four years at that. Fifteen twenty million. It won't let up until maybe twenty three twenty four. Yeah and honestly twenty million a year. I mean unless. I think it must go for years but i would say three years sixty million. That's like mike conley taking a little bit of a discount on right you know. And i mean whichever of miami or new york or dallas or toronto. If they're still trying to compete and a strikes out on kyle lowry and you know. Maybe some teams prefer spencer dinwiddie and chris. Paul will assume he'll be back in phoenix. But my company you would think would have suitors and it seems clear that he would like to stay in utah if he can but if he's just going to get way more you know shit like he could get two years sixty million instead of three hundred sixty billion pro from the jazz right so and even if you bump now if you could bump mike conley down to fifteen million to start or make some other moves which will discuss then then your tax bills like connie manageable for it seemed like for the vast majority teams that are not the warriors and then the nats and maybe a couple of others who just haven't been in the position to pay it yet but might be a will find out what the lakers pursued that fifteen million over the tax seems like a kind of a default hard cap so that would just give them a team salary plus tax one hundred eighty two million so by five million dollars less. You're gonna save over twenty million dollars in actual cash. it's again it's just. It's really hard to justify that type of marginal cost of so pencil. In mike conley though for i mean i think twenty million over three years you know..

This was a few years ago. Now did you think i was gonna sign recited with the celtics. The celtics not at all hours of the ngelo russell. train Jeddah allan train. You could call into spencer civility train. Those are the plays that we had at that time. But when i said that he was coming to the nestle miles wjr lake. I thought he was happy with boston. off a year that you regretted because a believe you guys got bounced by the bucks. Yes sorry to bring back. The memories. Thousand sets is knowing khairat though would want to bounce back with the same squad or if you really want to play with katie that much summer maybe try to recruit him to bless them but then again. How would that work out tatum. There you know so. Alex let me ask you this. What are you remember thinking from that moment. The buck series was certainly something but maybe the maybe this revisionist history in the mood was a little different Well my mood was very different up until the buck series. I really thought that kyrie was gonna resign for most effect year But when that buck series happened. Watching his kind of disengagement on the court the fact that he was kind of deliberately hunting bad matchups explicitly trying to guard jaanus that that showed to me that he was not particularly enthused with staying on the celtics for the foreseeable future. And you know danny aines so addressing danny ainges comments. He mentioned that he was surprised. Like myself that kyri ultimately left for brooklyn. And i have to say you know given that trying to square that with kyrie's comments from earlier couple of weeks ago when he mentioned that he and durant had had this thing in the works for a while..

"They have great players championship. Level players specifically kawai leonard but kawai has not been the facto leader of any of the team. He's been on. He's been the best player but he hasn't necessarily been the heart and soul the vocal leader of those teams wasn't san antonio which was still dunkin's team until the very end and then you go to toronto where you have kyle lowry. Plus you have a whole bunch of guys that have been there forever anyway so the team was kind of just close. Knit in and of itself. And paul george who has been part of successful playoff teams but he was on a pacers team with david west. And danny granger. Then he goes to oklahoma city and russell. Westbrook is the alpha team when the going gets tough. who in. that locker room is going to bring it together that i wonder about as the season progresses. I wondered about that myself. Chris said many times. I thought you know i still believe like if they could somehow get kyle lowry. Not just because he played with kawhi before but just because lowry is exactly the kind of personality. You need the kind of leader you need and because it could use an upgrade at the position. i don't know if he'll ever be available. And i don't know if they have the means to get it done but yeah like kyle lowry facsimile. Whoever that is. I think the clippers could use on the other hand. Eboka has an a respected voice and as a guy who can get fired up in a guy who i think. We'll talk to guys. And we'll hold guys accountable. I think marcus morris while not as accomplished has that kind of outgoing and forceful personality. I think that you know. I don't think i look at batumi. Some you know. Rally the troops guy. But he's a respected veteran. Who's been around and an his respected. I just. I think there's a different makeup that maybe we'll maybe won't be as big of an issue. Maybe it's not as big of a concern. They like they badly badly needed that kind of leadership in the bubble and they didn't get it. Maybe this season they don't need it as badly. And maybe with the that responsibility spread across some of the guys. I just mentioned. Maybe there's just less urgency for it. I don't know. I do know that the two stars are playing their butts off. They're both putting up great numbers as you point out. Don't know if it's sustainable. They're both career highs in assists. The ball's moving a lot more on this team period. It's a lot less taking turns or hero ball one on one stuff. Paul george is everything. Five statistics quick aside. Howard like that understand like in philly. The ball's moving more now like what is happening in philly. You're seeing the playmaking move up. I don't i can't wrap my head around this like a couple of reporters in houston walk fell stone towards that to say you know i'd what about a better player in that mix and understandably. He wouldn't go there. But i need to hear something. I need to hear why. Why a ben. Simmons straight up wasn't wasn't as good as those picks i just. I just got to figure it out. I said many times in the weeks leading up to the trade and you probably did too. If ben simmons is on the table it's game over. I truly believe that. I thought if the sixers were willing to part with ben simmons. There's no the discussion to have. There's no better player you're going to get. I don't even care what else is in the deal from philly side of it if you can get a top fifteen player in his early prime. That's what you do. They do that reporting suggests. I don't have this verified myself. And i always say like i think it's hard to nail down what teams really would or wouldn't have done. When push comes to shove was really about including tyree smacks year not wasn't really about including Thiab or i don't know where it broke down and i don't want to. I don't want to assume with with one percents certainty that ben simmons was truly on the table but if he was then i think absolutely. That's the deal you make an even if you think. Well we have john wall and john wall's really hard to move. What can we. How can we quickly stipulate that. Ben simmons was on the table like you're not having a conversation with philadelphia that goes as far as it went over like table. Maxi and ten first round picks. You're not doing that like there's you'd like it's an. It's not a question to me. If ben simmons was on the table. Let's just watch it was around. Benson just stipulates that stipulate. Ben simmons is on the table a very big table because he's a tall guy. He's on the table. And if you're if you're struggle is trying to figure out what does he fit with our current guys or does he fit with john wall. Or what do we do next then. I think you've already aired. You've already made a mistake because the goal. And when you're having they woke up and decided to trade. James started but the goal of trading a superstar. Horton is to get the best possible return and i think that means talent and to your point. Not the bag of magic beans. The picks that may or may not become something down the road. And if you don't think benefits if you don't think you can build quickly enough around him and there's a case to be made hey doesn't fit with the guys we have now. How long would it take to actually build. something around. Him is going sour in the meantime and then he's gonna demand to trade somewhere else or whatever fair. There are some logistical concerns. The day that you will get him..

"But he's he's got some things that are weighing on him but it put him in the this line of questioning put them in a reflective mode and he said at one point now that my life has changed. I don't know if that means about his. Nba career or in general says with that change comes accepting that there are older versions of me that i didn't necessarily like or things i would like to do. Different or conversations. I would like to have with different people to address. Just have on his talk. And so like that's reflective as. I think we've heard from him. He saying like yeah. They're versions of me. I didn't i looking back and things i'd like to do over. He says it won't point and this is important to. There's nothing normal about the life that i live. It's just something. I've come to accept an embrace as let me use this as a tool to be able to change things that i want to see in the world. And chris i flagged that one and transcribed that one in particular because like none of these guys when they're basketball prodigies or athletes in general. They don't sign up to be celebrities right. They do this because they're great at the sport and they want to pursue that to the fullest. And yes with that comes wealth and fame and all kinds of things and all kinds of opportunities but not everybody is equally comfortable with it embraces it and not. Everybody handles it The same way or is as good at handling it and some guys can struggle with it and we've seen that over the course of history so to me again that was kyri sang by saying there's nothing new about this life. I lead like he's saying like i didn't choose fame and fortune. I chose to be a great basketball player in this all came with it. Now i gotta deal with it and with and with on my own missteps which he acknowledged a couple of times making this.

"Should i have been looking for more excitement there from kyrie irving like should. I have been expecting that. I'm part of a super team again. One of my takeaways was look this. Is you know. Kyrie's in. Cleveland and boston was that he was one physician. He was in situations that were not of his choosing like he was drafted by cleveland. And then he was part of something for a couple of years and then lebron comes in and he's a part of something different now that resulted in a championship and what straight trips for him to the nba finals. But i always felt that was something that bothered him that it was a situation on of his choosing he gets straight to boston. He liked it early on. Didn't like it so much the end and then he goes to brooklyn and chooses to go back home. To the new york city area chooses to play with kevin durant and then two weeks into the season three weeks of the season. Whatever it is all of a sudden that team looks a lot different than what it was gonna look like when kyrie got there. I mean maybe i'm reading too much into it hard but that was one of my first thoughts that all right. Here's kyri now in a situation that he did not choose to be in and how he going to react to that. Is he going to embrace it or is he going to sulk his way through it. So i i totally get all that. Chris and i watched his his presser. It was twelve minutes long which you know. That's a pretty good longtime for a guy who probably by his body language certainly seemed like he did not want to be there. And i'll be there with the nets i mean. Be there in the in the in that press conference on zoom he was you know very emotionally kind of flat. His most expansive most interesting answers. I think had more to do with where he is emotionally and mentally how he's feeling about kind of just justice place in the world and i mean that earnestly not facetiously at all like he had some really interesting thoughts just as he was trying to semi explain himself in a very ambiguous way of course and he did not offer any specifics about his absence and about his return and i don't think he owes any of. That's how ios does it to his teammates and he says he has delivered that. They know they know where he's at. They know what's going on. I'll take that as a.

"Since the two thousand fourteen. Fifteen season bruce brown think they acquired for a cup of gourmet coffee went for fifteen minutes a game to twenty two minutes a game. They're all their depth has gone. We know this some of this will change. Kyrie's back in the rotation chris. I think the concern should be that. They don't have any depth at all right now. And they're relying a ton on deondraye jordan and jeff green and they're going to have to find some hidden gems along the way whether it's the buyout market whether it's g. league whether it's another trade i don't know but i i do think if we're going to throw some early warning flags to go along with the early signs of of yelling. They look spectacular and they look like a team that can make a run. Then it's it is it. is that aspect of it. it's the rotation. it's the depth. It's the minutes that certain guys are playing. Yeah i don't know what the bio market's gonna look like this year honestly we with it being such a quirky season. And i mean there are a lot of teams that probably think they have a chance of getting into that play in tournaments so that might reduce the buyout market organically. Because of that fact i do agree with the front court the depth. It's a problem. I don't think that jeff green deondraye jordan rotation in the frontcourt is enough. I don't know what they do about it unless there is somebody in the g. league that you can poach and add to that mix but i don't know how that's the state of late. I'm watching the game on monday. Against milwaukee and i'm watching the andre jordan chase around jaanus on the perimeter like that's that's not gonna work that's not going to be effective now. There's an argument to be made in a couple of gm's texted me this system. Gm's really texted me this during the week where it's like. They don't got to be a top ten defense like they're gonna outscore. You buy a lot like so you got to be able to keep up with their offense if you play the nets. They've just got to be mediocre middle of the pack fifteen to eighteen type. Arrange to be successful so maybe they can get there. But that frontcourt depth it. It absolutely worries me. I don't know what you do with jordan. Jeff green frontcourt. How you flesh that out. I will say watching hardened durant man. It's just fun. I mean you knew you knew that james harden was not the kinda guy that was talking his way to the first couple of weeks in houston that you know that it was more about. He didn't wanna be there than what he was as a player even what kind of condition. He was in playing for not in shape. He's being rolled out there for forty minutes a game and first two games so he's clearly in enough condition to play at that type of level..
